UPDATE FROM ANDREWS

Dear family members and friends of Andrews Senior Care,

We had a busy May at our homes

Our teams and residents fundraised for the Alzheimer’s Society - an annual event for us. We held inhouse walks, played games and showed our support for the Alzheimer’s Society of P.E.I.

We also celebrated Mother’s Day and honoured our resident moms with special teas, meals and parties.

Andrews of Summerside and Andrews of Charlottetown said goodbye to their activity directors Annelize Malan, activity director at Summerside, is moving to Ontario with her husband while Jackie Vanderzwaag, activity director at Charlottetown, is on maternity leave following the birth of her daughter.

Komal, who our Summerside residents and families would know, has replaced Annelize as activity director while Charlottetown welcomes Pam McQuaid to the role.

This month we will celebrate Team Appreciation Week, a five-day period where we recognize the hard work of our team members in all departments

We also celebrate Father’s Day this month with special meals and events. Andrews of Stratford will mark its 21 anniversary with a lobster dinner, former Guardian editor Gary MacDougall will speak with our residents and we will aim to enjoy some outdoor time now that the weather is improving.

Wishing you all a wonderful June, and a happy early Father’s Day

Sincerely,

Andrews Senior Care earns Accreditation with Commendation designation

Andrews Senior Care is proud to announce that our homes in both Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick have achieved Accreditation with Commendation through Accreditation Canada

This designation makes Andrews the only privately-owned long-term care facilities on P.E.I. that are part of both the Provincial Government LTC Inspection Program and Accreditation Canada’s Qmentum Program. Accreditation Canada standards are considered the benchmark for health services in Canada. Accreditation with Commendation means Andrews not only met, but exceeded, the national standards outlined by Accreditation Canada.

“This is a significant achievement for our homes,” said Mizan Uddin, Andrews Group General Manager.“Our teams have worked hard over the past four years and achieving Accreditation is a testament to our dedication to continuous improvement in resident care and experience.”

Director of Nursing for Andrews Senior Care, Alana DesRoches, alongwithCathy Fischer, Manager of Special Projects, led the process over the past four years. The two worked in close coordination with the Directors of Care and teams at all five homes in P.E.I. and the five ProTem Memory Care homes in Moncton, N B, which specialize in dementia care using a unique small home format developed in Europe

“It was a team effort,” said Alana “You don’t achieve something like this in a silo Our Directors of Care, nurses, home operations and housekeeping teams, dietary, caregivers and activity directors, and admin support work hard every day to ensure our residents have exceptional person-centered care andexperiences Accreditation gave us the opportunity to take what we were doing well and make it that much better I’m extremely proud of our teams”

The timing of Accreditation is especially relevant to Andrews Senior Care, which marks 40 years of caring for Islanders this year Andrews is marking this milestone with a significant expansion in its provision of LTC services

The organization is currently finalizing construction of a new state of the art 90 room LTC wing at Andrews of Charlottetown, the first home opened by the founders Doreen and Errol Andrews, in 1986 The redesigned home will include two interior courtyards for resident outdoor activities as well as a playground area for grandchildren of residents The new rooms are expected to open late this year

Andrews commenced its journey toward Accreditation four years ago, in 2022 The organization achieved the Accreditation Primer Designation in 2024 Since then, Andrews has worked toward the final step of the Accreditation process, the AccreditationQmentumSurvey. During this period, Andrews homes worked toward 300 individual standards, achieving a 96.5% overall score during the onsite survey in April which was overseen by surveyors from out of Province. Inaddition, Andrews scored 100% complianceon the Required Operational Practices(ROP)outlined by Accreditation Canada.

Accreditation Canada is an independent organization dedicated to improving outcomes through assessments against global standard, alongside the Health Standards Organization (HSO). For more information about Accreditation Canada go towww.accreditation.ca.

We

asked. . .

In celebration of Father’s Day, we asked our resident dads what they enjoyed/found most rewarding about raising children.

I enjoyed our boys growing up and getting into a number of sports They did well in school and both grew up to be great men. They’ve been a blessing to my wife and I. Truly great guys.

- Jack Turner

To watch the kids growing up To watch them learn and see them become adults. That’s what I enjoyed - Lenny Williams

It was a good challenge, a good experience to try to teach them some values that you have yourself.

- Huntley Stewart

They’d come along with us when we were campers. We brought them with us on our big trips out west and they liked that They enjoyed the hiking. We did a lot of that with the kids.

- Ken Barrie

Just to see what they accomplish on their own in school work and that Now that they’re all grown up , they’re on their own so I guess I must have done something right.

- Roy Arsenault

I enjoyed kids to begin with. I’m a big kid myself. What did I enjoy most? Christmas-time. Around the tree, stuff like that.

- Bill Williams

It is rewarding It’s actually rewarding sometimes when you don’t even know it. But I recognize it I see the grandchildren. They’re doing well. So, momsie and popsie did ok. I’m very pleased about that.

- Raymond Toews

I enjoyed it but I think I enjoy them more now than I ever did Now, they’re so attentive to me and so helpful and supportive and appreciative It makes me sort of feel I guess I didn’t do so bad after all.

- David Hamilton

You got to teach them. I taught them a lot. How to drive a car You name it What was most rewarding? Whenever I helped them do stuff.

- Marvin MacEwen

Being able to teach them stuff that are life skills. Both my boys are very, very competent individuals - Wayne Schleyer
