Andrews of Stratford
WHAT OUR RESIDENTS SAY: “The atmosphere is serene, quiet and friendly. Residents are respected and all staff try very hard to accommodate wishes expressed. When I toured the place, I was impressed with the overall ambience of the home, the decor, the wide halls and doorways, the comfortable rooms, the overall quiet and peacefulness, the cleanliness, and the ongoing care and the outside of the property. It means a lot to us that the flower beds are cared for and lawns are mowed.”

Active & Engaged

Active & Engaged Social engagement is a key part of life at Andrews Senior Care, both for residents and staff. Our activity directors provide daily activities for our residents including regular fitness programs, religious services, entertainment, parties and outings. Special meals are organized in coordination with our culinary teams.
Residents Monthly planning: Activity directors should provide a minimum of 3 activities per day. The majority of activities should be high value/moderate effort activities that residents look forward to and require some planning and preparation. Examples would be interactive group games, live music, sing-alongs or creative opportunities like crafting. Activities like Bingo, exercise and church are the bread and butter of activities and should be a regular part of every activities schedule. At least 1 high value/high effort activity (see attached example calendars for reference) should be included every month. Depending on the home, this could be an excursion like an apple picking trip, a holiday party or a dining experience. The goal is to create unique and special experiences based on the interests and needs of the residents. Mandatory minimum requirements Exercise: 3 times per week. Church or spiritual service: 1 time per week. Artistic or creative opportunities: 2 per month, High Value Unique Experience: 1 per month. Dining Experiences: once per month is ideal. Mandatory are: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
15
Active & Engaged Special Events Examples of recent special events including, but not limited to: Senior prom in partnership with Three Oaks Senior High Annual haunted house Pumpkin carving competitions Apple orchard visits Pumpkin patch visits Christmas lights bus tours Cookie decorating events Miniature horse visits Classic car shows Family BBQs Christmas Light Event Performances by the PEI Symphony Performances by local theatre groups Bus tours to scenic locations Pet therapy visits in partnership with the St. John Ambulance & Therapeutic Paws of Canada Holiday parties Involvement in community projects Resident art show (featuring art by our residents)
16
Active & Engaged In addition to regular activities organized by Andrews activity directors, residents also enjoy a host of other benefits designed to enhance the overall experience of life at Andrews, including: A monthly newsletter featuring photos, articles and features on residents and daily life at our homes. Annual Christmas card photos arranged by our Experience Coordinator. These photos are complimentary and have become a Christmas tradition for many of our residents. Valentine’s portraits for resident couples or residents and their spouses. This is again a complimentary service provided by our Experience Coordinator. Obituary and memorial service photos are provided, when possible, by our Experience Coordinator. This is a complimentary service in coordination with our Experience Coordinator and the activity director at each home. Men’s group events are hosted regularly at our homes. Some homes do a weekly men’s breakfast, while others meet monthly. Some activities enjoyed at our men’s groups include pool noodle hockey, pub nights, pizza parties, happy hour, coffee chats and special outings like a Father’s Day meal at a restaurant.
17
Active & Engaged Staff Staff benefit from regular activities, recognition and a monthly internal newsletter all with the goal of enhancing engagement and well-being. Our social committee, led by our Experience Coordinator, organizes regular outings and activities for staff. In addition, we also host milestone dinners for longterm staff, weekly and monthly staff recognition events in the homes, an annual Exceptional Care Award for outstanding staff members, a complimentary family day outing, participate in community events like parade, host holiday parties, give holiday gift cards, create opportunities for staff to share their cultures and host an annual Team Appreciation week.
18
Active & Engaged Community Connections In addition to all of our internal activities, events and experiences for residents and staff, we’ve also worked at building relationships with community groups and organizations. Projects like the Light Up Our Lives event, or our annual Alzheimer’s fundraisers help foster a connection to our broader communities. Light Up Our Lives: Initiated by Andrews of Summerside activity director Annelize Malan, the event had community businesses and organizations donate decorated Christmas trees to be displayed along the driveway of the home throughout the Christmas season. The public was encouraged to visit, with Andrews of Summerside accepting non-perishable food donations to the food bank. The first year it was held we had roughly 20 businesses and community groups involved, including the City of Summerside, Wyatt Heritage and Museum, Sobeys, the Summerside Fire Department, The Alzheimer’s Society of PEI, as well as many more. In 2025, we added more community groups to our roster and plan to continue this event every December. Alzheimer’s Fundraiser: We have been a major sponsor of the Alzheimer Society since 2021 and hold annual inhouse fundraisers at our homes as well as take part in the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in the spring. This is a cause near and dear to many of our residents and their families. All money raised by our staff is matched by Andrews Senior Care. In 2025, we donated $6,376 and in 2024 we donated $13,391. Three Oaks Senior High: While all our homes have developed good relationships with local schools and daycares, our relationship with Three Oaks Senior High in Summerside is exceptional. In partnership with TOSH, we have now organized two senior proms for our residents where students come dressed in their prom attire, help decorate our home and spend the evening dancing with our residents. We have also done cultural exchanges, where our international staff have been invited to perform traditional cultural dances at pep rallies. Likewise, we have hosted afternoons where students have visited to play games, chat with our residents. It’s an excellent way of bridging the generational divide and our residents really enjoy their time with the students. E-Bike: Stratford activity director Sharon Woods-Bryenton initiated our relationship with Bike Friendly Communities. Through that partnership, we started taking residents on bike rides using our e-bike (trishaw) which Sharon secured through a grant with Cycling Without Age. Now, we have a roster of volunteers who help take residents out during the spring, summer and early fall. It’s a beloved activity that has given our residents, especially those with severe mobility issues, the ability to spend time outdoors, explore their community and, in the words of our volunteer, Bethan, “get people out and wind in their hair.” Town of Stratford: Over the past five years, our Stratford home has developed an excellent relationship with the Town of Stratford, primarily through Melanie Weatherbie, Program and Event Coordinator with the Town. Through this relationship, we have organized: the annual March of the Elves Christmas concert, the Poppy Project, which saw our residents help knit poppies for a Remembrance Day display, as well as a series of Artist in Residence performances at our Stratford home. 19
Active & Engaged Community Connections Resident Art Show: We hosted our first-ever resident art show in the fall of 2025. The evening was organized by our Experience Coordinator, in partnership with the host-home Andrews of Stratford. The event featured art submitted by residents at all our homes, which was displayed in a gallery-like setting with wine, beer and cheese available for guests. Residents, families and the public were invited to attend. Residents enjoyed the opportunity to share their work, while families and members of the public were astonished at the level of talent present in our resident population. It was a very special evening, and something we intend to do again on an annual basis. Kent Building Supplies: We have maintained an ongoing relationship with Kent in Charlottetown and Summerside. We have an arrangement where Kent donates Valentine’s flowers to our residents every February. Our residents look forward to the special delivery, which usually takes place on Valentine’s Day or a few days before. Seasonal Music Ceilidhs: Andrews of Stratford has partnered with the Town of Stratford to host a number of ceilidhs on Sunday afternoons. Admission is by donation either to the food bank or the Andrews Activity Fund.
