Robinswood Hill rises to 650 ft. It was originally one of the main sources of water to the city. The springs rising on Robin’s Wood Hill were used by Gloucester Abbey in the 13th century. The Hill is now a Country Park and Nature Reserve, occupying 250 acres of open countryside with viewpoints, pleasant walks and way-marked nature trails that cover the hill. A traditional orchard has recently been revived and replanted. The summit hosts fabulous views of the Severn Bridge to the South, the Malvern Hills to the North and the Black Mountains to the West.

A terrific walking landscape and a habitat for many creatures, the areas of scrub and woodland are particularly rich in bird life such as red Kites, with summer visitors including warblers such as whitethroat, and sometimes cuckoo, buzzard and song thrush can be seen all year. Green woodpeckers may be found feeding on ant nests in the fields and you may have glimpses of rare winter visitors such as the secretive long-eared owl. Many mammals are found on Robinswood Hill. Rabbits and grey squirrels are the most obvious, red foxes are sometimes seen during the day. Voles and shrews are common in the grasslands, where they are hunted by buzzards, kestrels and weasels.

Robinswood Hill is a special place for wild flowers, with a diverse range of habitats; traditional flower rich meadows, scrub, old orchards and woodland. Bluebells, primroses, cowslip, dyer’s greenweed, devil’s-bit scabious, and a variety of orchids and wild garlic are among the flowers found in the woodlands, which provide food for a range of butterflies including orange tip, peacock, and marbled white, with speckled wood butterflies occupying almost every woodland glade throughout the summer.
