These are old one room flats that were built for up to 6 soldiers in each room during World War Two. The flat contained 4 floors, 58 rooms and 4 Toilets. It became home to Bachelors(Amasoka). The man were not allowed to bring women in the flats, but as time went by they brought in their families.

Some of the men families were huge. It was difficult for them to manage the space on one room flat. This drove the situation to an extent that the room became chaotic and crowded.

A 41-year old man, Mr S.Mngqibisa said, “I’m a Married man with my four children. We sleep in the same bed.

We don’t have enough privacy and that drags down my Power as the Head of the House.” These are kind of situations that are faced by the Langa Old Flats Residence.

Each room is 10 feet (squared), with one window and one socket plug. Some of the Residence of Langa Flats had some complaints. “I live with my wife, daughter and 3 nephews. It is difficult for us to sit together as a family because there is no enough space for others to join. And again, 1 toilet is used by many residents.”

We are trying to bring change inside their rooms using the furniture they have. We help them through the path of how they should arrange so that they benefit some space. The reason is because there are such dangerous issues that takes place. Such as fire caused by the electric wires because they break them and connect more wires for other things.

16 The painting was made by Simphiwe Gala of Maboneng Arts whose from Joburg. This project was formed in 2013 until 2015. Ikhaya le Langa was also the part of the project so that the Art Galleries could attract more tourist by selling the t-shirts and more other artistic equickment so that langa could elevate to another level.

Simphiwe painted the first 5 houses so that the tourist could be attracted into those houses at the same the owners of the house could benefit by getting something from the tourist .

Tourists pay R100 per person to visit one of the houses.

The money will be shared later by the owners of the houses. If the owner of the house has vintage objects they were also allowed to sell it to the tourists.

People of these colourful houses are very proud about the paintings. Two out of the five houses are the B&B for tourists. Some inhabitants would love to continue with the project but due to the lack of understanding of the others in the 5 houses the project did not go any futher.

PROBLEM > Overcrowded trains, people have to hold onto the train from the outside, passengers get injured and even killed > Robberies occurring in the train and on the way to the station

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS > Remove seats inside the train to create more space > Extend the carriages or enhance the numbers of carriages > Warning signs that tell people about thieves > Always walk together to the station

Tsotsitaal is a combination of languages thrown in to form a new language. It is origionated in Gauteng Province, South Africa in the 1940s. Tsotsi means Thug/Street-Smart. Taal means Language.

It is spoken in many different townships of South Africa.

It differs in every province and city depending on the languages spoken in that particular place. In Langa, Cape Town, the Tsotsitaal spoken is a mixture of Xhosa, Afrikaans and English terms. It is the most spoken language on the streets of Langa. It is spoken in the streets, within households by the youth among each other as a common language of communication, it is also used when speaking to adults. Some people consider it as their main language/mother tongue.

Our group is doing a survey in the train for school children who travel by train and one who don’t.

We are trying to create an awareness for school childrens who travel by train should have a special carriage because children are suffering when trains are full.

A CHILD WHO TRAVEL BY TRAIN TO SCHOOL 1. How does it feel to use a train going to school?

Using a train is hectic because trains during peak hours are normally full and most accidents happen, it becomes so difficults to get into the trains and must of the time got delay so we end up being too late to school.

A CHILD USING A TAXI 1. How does it feel using taxi?

Taxi are safe and I am always on time at school but its so expensive.

3. What woul you prefer to use when you are going to school?

A taxi becouse its safe and has no delay.

2. Why don’t you use a train instead of taxi?

Its becouse trains most of the time are delayed and student at my school then come too late.

No because a lot of people die on trains and some push each other while the train is moving and even people got mugged when the trains are empty.

HISTORY OF LANGA TOWNSHIP Langa is a oldest township in Cape Town and its was established in 1927 in term of the 1923 Urban Act. It is the one of many township area that were designed and located for Black African peoplein the Apartheid Era. The name Langa literally means “sun� in Xhosa the name of the townshipis derived from the name of Langalibelele- a Hlubi rebel or chief and renowned who in 1873 was imprisoned on Robben Island for rebelling against the Natal government.

Langa was originally designed in a way to allow the authorities maximum visibility and control of residents.

In the early years local laws prohibiting the brewing of sorghum beer (utywala) was strongly resented and in the 1930s prohibition was abolished in the area with the construction of municipal beer halls taking place in 1945.

Black resident of Langa like all others did not have a single Identity, some tribal were strong and radically reshaped by their urban experience, the Mfengu community held celebrations to mark their liberation from the Xhosa and hence stirred resentiment in the township.

The proximetely of housing in Langa was one factor in promoting a high degree of neighbourliness and the creation of African institutions.

Black resident of Langa like all others did not have a single Identity, some tribal were strong and radically reshaped by their urban experience, the Mfengu community held celebrations to mark their liberation from the Xhosa and hence stirred resentiment in the township.

In Langa churches were very important part of the township life, particularly for women , the women’s christian Association (Umanyano lwabafazi) of the Bantu Presbiterian Church which it had 90 members and provided much of the self help service to neighbours in the very poor community Education was highly valued in Langa but there were only primary schools , the authorities initially refused to provide a secondary school education as requested by Langa residents. It was until 1937 that permission was given for the secondary schools after the pressure from a group of clergy and parent who encouraged pupil to aspire to become nurses, teachers and also ministers.
