orn in Los Angeles and spending her early years in the San Fernando Valley, Victoria White’s life has been anything but suburban. She began her career as a model at the age of 15. Just before turning 17, she was discovered by Eileen Ford who brought Victoria to New York City where she quickly found success as one of the most in-demand models of the Ford Agency. While living in New York City she met Lord Gordon White, one of the most successful corporate raiders of the 1970s and 1980s and the cofounder of Hanson PLC, the British conglomerate.

After a 5-year courtship they married, and Gordon introduced Victoria to the upper echelons of society. Saturdays and Sundays they would lunch at McMullen on the Upper East Side or at Scott’s in London to enjoy dressed crab. Victoria and Gordon were inseparable throughout their marriage. Gordon sparked Victoria’s interest in collecting and for them, collecting encompassed everything from houses to jewelry to furniture to fine art.

Victoria and Gordon would frequently walk through the sale rooms of art galleries, jewelers and furniture designer studios in search of the next treasure. They often visited the studio of John Singer Sargent and browsed galleries that featured Renaissance and Impressionist paintings.

Gordon’s and Victoria’s love of horses led to their collection of sporting art highlighted by top tier equestrian paintings by artists like Sir Alfred Munnings as well as dog portraits.

Victoria inherited Gordon’s eye for the finer things in life and soon he brought her to her first auction where, at 22, she raised her first paddle and from that day her love of auctions was established. Gordon entrusted her to manage the acquisitions of their growing collection of fine objects and she quickly learned to value these assets and she achieved the discipline to know when to forge ahead on a purchase and when to step back. She learned the ins and outs of the auction scene, assessing the room and getting into the minds of the other bidders.

Christie’s and Sotheby’s became her homes away from home.

Throughout their time together Victoria and Gordon decorated in several residences including a French-inspired design in Bel Air, an English Tudor in Beverly Park as well as homes in London and New York City. Managing the houses became not only a primary responsibility for Victoria, but a passion. The running of the of the homes included furnishing them and setting the tone for the interior décor. That meant more time at the auctions where Victoria further expanded her interest in art and furniture and refined her bidding skills.

Gordon passed away in 1995. Although Victoria lost Gordon, he left her with his collector’s spirit and the wisdom to navigate the world of fine objects and Victoria further cultivated her interest in art and design in the years to come. But it was also time for the next chapter in her

life. She remarried and raised a family in Beverly Hills. A couple of houses later, she landed at 1061 Woodland Drive, her treasured Paul Williams designed home where she lived for 16 years. Woodland Drive brought Victoria not only the peace and tranquility of the gardens and pools and majestic Eucalyptus trees, but an introduction to her neighbor, Robert Evans, the iconic Hollywood producer and former head of Paramount Pictures. Victoria literally strolled over to Evans’ home with her homemade apple pie and it was love at first sight. Soon after they married and, with Evans, Victoria was introduced to the world of Hollywood filmmaking and deals and celebrities. Although they ended up splitting, they remained close friends for the subsequent years leading up to his passing in 2019.

The world of Robert Evans offered her new adventures and a new outlook, and she pivoted from the traditional world of Old Masters and sporting art to the electricity of pop and modern art, becoming an enthusiastic collector of Andy Warhol and his contemporaries including Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Tom Wesselmann and Robert Longo. Victoria didn’t give up the European art that she accumulated, she skillfully integrated it with her newly acquired contemporary pieces and created an eclectic mix of the old and new. She also discovered the work of the British-born artist Damian Elwes and purchased several of his works, including paintings from his Amazon Jungle period as well as recent pieces such as his iconic work, Basquiat’s Studio.

After Evans’ passing, it was, alas, time for another change, another adventure. Victoria acquired a house in the Summerlin community of Las Vegas in 2011. Her mother, brother, sister and nephews lived in Vegas, and Victoria sought out a home nearby. The logistics of managing two large houses became too demanding and Victoria decided to trim her holdings and made the difficult decision to sell her beloved Paul Williams home. As difficult as that decision was, the positive side is that it gave her much needed free time to embark on a major renovation of her Summerlin home. The downsizing did mean trimming her extensive collection of furniture, art and collectibles, and that brings us to where we are now. As hard it is to give up many of her cherished belongings, Victoria looks to others to take stewardship of them, to appreciate their spirit and to extend their enjoyment to others who appreciate the finer things in life.

Victoria misses the gardens, lush plantings and the extensive grounds of Woodland Drive, but she is also thoroughly enjoying her new life that is currently focused on the renovation of her Summerlin residence and beginning another compelling chapter with her new husband, a prominent Las Vegas lawyer and former district attorney. She is looking forward expanding her interest in the arts to include supporting the next generation of artists. Victoria is comforted in entrusting her collection from the Woodland Drive years with Andrew Jones Auctions and in knowing that her treasures will soon be in loving new homes.

13 A pair of George IV sterling silver oval meat dishes Richard Sibley I, London 1828 The rims engraved with a coat of arms to one side and two heraldic crests surmounted by a banner with motto AVAUNCEZ ET ARCHEZ BIEN. length 17 1/2in (44cm); width 13in (33cm); total weight approximately 108oz troy $1,500-2,000 Footnote: The armorial bearings as engraved upon these meat dishes are those of the family of Swinnerton (quartering Abnet) with Milborne (quartering Gunter) in pretence. These armorial bearings denote the marshalling of a marital coat showing the arms of the husband over the entire surface of the shield, whilst the arms of the wife (as an heraldic heiress) are placed on a small shield (known as an escutcheon of pretence) centrally on the husband’s arms.These armorial bearings undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Thomas Swinnerton (died May 1836), of Butterton Hall in the County of Staffordshire and his wife, Mary Milborne (died 20th May 1795). Thomas and Mary were married at the Parish Church of St Mary le Bone, St Marylebone in the County of Middlesex on the 27th April 1793. Sadly, their marriage only lasted a little under two years during which time they had three children, three daughters. Thomas was the second and only surviving son of Thomas Swinnerton, of Butterton Hall aforesaid and his wife, Margaret Colclough, the daughter, and heiress of Blest Colchough, of Eccleshall in the County of Staffordshire, whilst Mary was daughter and heiress of Charles Milborne, of Wonaston and of the Priory, Abergavenny in the County of Monmouthshire and his wife, Lady Martha Harley, the daughter of Edward Harley, the 3rd Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer and his wife, Martha Morgan.Thomas was a Barrister at Law and served as the Recorder of Stafford as well as High Sheriff of Staffordshire for the year 1795.

This date would allow the hypothesis that the tray’s owner was Alfred John Denison (born 8th April 1857 died 3rd June 1943). Alfred was the fourth son of Sir William Thomas Denison, KCB and his wife, Caroline Lucy Hornby. He married Kathleen Louise Kelly (died 30th July 1930) on the 30th July 1903. She was the daughter of Walter John Kelly, of Killarney, Bogowantalawa on the Island of Ceylon. Alfred succeeded eventually to the Ossington Hall estate under the terms of the will of his nephew, William Frank Evelyn Denison upon the death of his nephew mother, Lady Elinor Amhurst on the 30th July 1939.The Denisons of Ossington descend from William Denison (died 1782), an eminent merchant of Leeds in the County of Yorkshire who purchased the Manor of Ossingtonin 1753. He also served as the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire in the year 1779.

Benjamin was the son of Benjamin Lany, of Cratfield in the County of Suffolk, whilst Mary was eldest daughter of John Revett, of Brandeston in the County of Suffolk and his wife Elizabeth Fauconberge.Benjamin was educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge and was ordained a deacon in the Church of England in 1734 and a priest in 1736. Footnote: The arms as engraved are those of a branch of the family of Drummond.These arms undoubtedly pertain to a gentleman who was a scion of the Scottish family of originally Drummond of Concraig and of Lennoch and later of Megginch all in the County of Perthshire.

Given the date of manufacture of this pair of wine coolers, upon the balance of probability and without any evidence to the contrary there is one credible candidate for the ownership of sameand that individual is Vice Admiral Sir Adam Drummond (born 14th August 1770 died 3rd May 1849). He was a member of the Baronial House of Drummond of Lennoch and of Megginch and was the third son of Colin Drummond and his wife, Katherine Oliphant of Rossie. Sir Adam succeeded his brother, Robert Drummond of Megginch, the 6th of Megginch (born 1759 died 1815) in the family estates which included the family seat of Megginch Castle, near Errol in the County of Perthshire, the castle being the caput of the feudal barony of Megginch.Upon Robert’s death Sir Adam took the style ‘Drummond of Megginch’, being the seventh of that baronial house. Sir Adam married Lady Charlotte Menzies (born 1775 died 31 May 1832), the eldest daughter of John Murray, the 4th Duke of Atholl and his wife The Honourable Jane Cathcart and widow of Sir John Menzies, the 4th Baronet of Castle Menzies in the County of Perthshire on the 28th May 1801.Sir Adam was nominated as Knight Commander of the Royal Guelphic Order (KCH) on the 1st January 1837 and later that year received the accolade as a Knight Bachelor on the 1st March. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for the County of Perthshire.

These designs for costumes for Ladies in the Suite of Potiphar’s Wife were commissioned by Serge Diagilev, founder of the Ballets Russe. They were intended as promotional drawings for the forthcoming London season of the Ballets Russes in the Illustrated London News. It is likely that they were executed by Ernst Stern in collaboration with Leon Bakst. The inscription of Bakst’s name was done with Stern’s approval and that of Diagilev according to Bakst’s nieces, Mesdames Basacq and Tsipkevitch, who worked in Bakst’s studio.

Footnote: Sir Alfred James Munnings was born in East Anglia, the son of one of the largest millers in the Waveney Valley and grew up surrounded by the activity of a busy working mill with horses and horse-drawn carts arriving daily. His affinity for horses developed as he visited rural horse fairs and was captivated by their energy and the local characters in attendance.

The present view with St. Mary’s Cathedral in the distance, is a dramatic scene with the central brown stallion rearing as his handlers struggling to settle him, flanked by two grey horses, within the vast crowd of attendees. Around the central activity Munnings skillfully captures engaging vignettes as an onlooker to the fray stands atop a stone wall next to a bare legged boy, while a little white terrier sniffs the ground beneath. To the left a smiling young woman with long red hair and a blue cape embraces her beau, seemingly unaffected by the excitement behind them.

The enduring inspiration Munnings derived from these events is evident by the number of works he executed on this theme including A Suffolk Horse Fair, Lavenham, 1901 (Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum), The Horse Fair, 1904 (Castle Museum, Norwich) and The Fair, Lamorna, Penzance, circa 1912, closely resembles the composition of the work offered here with many of the same compensational elements. Another version of the Kilkenny Horse Fair was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1923 (no. 387) and again in 1926 (no. 431) after Munnings had presented it as his diploma work at the Royal Academy in 1925.

Kennedy Sr. Prince owned homes on both sides of the Atlantic. In the 1890s, he purchased a 994 acre estate at Wenham, Massachusetts, that he called Princemere. A dedicated horseman, he established numerous riding trails and carriage roads on the estate. In 1932 Prince also bought the Marble House at Newport, Rhode Island from Mrs. Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont (formerly Alva Vanderbilt). Besides his home in Biarritz, Mr. Prince owned “Villa Sainte-Helene” at Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France (today the residence of the Préfet des Pyrénées-Atlantiques), where he had been Master of Foxhounds in the annual hunt for more than 25 years.

Munnings first met Prince at a Hunt dinner in Pau in 1920. He had a chance encounter with Prince and his wife Abigail while sailing to New York from Southampton on the Berengaria in 1924, on his one and only trip to North America. During the voyage Prince convinced Munnings to spend part of his trip at Princemere where he provided him with a fully equipped studio where Munnings not only painted portraits of his hosts but several of their neighbors as well.

The work offered here depicts the construction of a polo field at Princemere. The modern steam powered plow in the middle ground is juxtaposed against the teams of horses standing in the foreground perfectly illustrates the dichotomy Munnings witnessed between the modernization he distained and his nostalgia for traditional means that were disappearing before his eyes.

Footnote: Munnings loved dogs almost as much as he loved horses. Many depictions of dogs are included in his larger scenes and patron’s portraits but canine portraits by Munnings are rare in his oeuvre. He and his wife Violet had dogs which they adored, and he frequently mentioned in his memoirs, but he does not mention any of his canine commissions. Several of his dog portrait compositions feature a dog sitting on a chair and all the works truly capture the spirit and personality of the sitter. Footnote: Munnings loved rural life and landscapes, particularly the valley between Dedham and Flatford where he lived, and his paintings depict the diverse beauty of the British countryside. He was a staunch proponent of en plein air painting and like the French Impressionists, he captures the principal characteristics of form while evoking the ambiance of the environment.

The River Stour was one of Munnings’ favorite places to paint and there are several works by him relating to this area. Flatford Mill used to belong to Golding Constable the father of the artist John Constable. John Constable painted many of his iconic works in this area. On the right side of the painting offered here the river lock and gate shown are the very ones seen in the Constable’s Flatford Mill (‘Scene on a Navigable River’) 1816-1817 (Tate Gallery, No. T03900), in between the mill and boy on the horse in that painting. As in the Constable painting Flatford Mill can be seen in the background as it can behind the trees in Munnings’ work.

There is a canvas version of Winter at Flatford Mill recorded by the Munnings Art Museum which was inscribed and dated 1928 on the stretcher bar. There are therefore two paintings which are basically identical, one on board, and one on canvas of the same size.

The only notable variation in the oil on canvas version is the right side view is cropped so the lock gate is nearer the edge of the composition. It is likely the case that the work offered here is a study for the canvas version, which would be typical Munnings’ style of working.

Munnings painted another view of Flatford in the snow and ice in 1939, now in the collection of the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Bournemouth (see A.J. Munnings, The Finish, Bungay, 1952, p. 232, illustrated opposite p. 281).

The arms as depicted upon this tankard are those of the family of Field.This tankard was in the possession of a gentleman who was a member of the family of Field, of the County of Yorkshire. This family stems from a William Field, of Bradford in the same county whose wife, Katherine was granted Letters of Administration as the administrator of William’s estate on the 21st April 1480. The family’s arms were confirmed, and their crest was granted to William’s grandson, John Field, of East Ardsley in the County of Yorkshire on the 4th September 1558. The Heralds’ Visitation of the County of Yorkshire that took place in the year 1584-5 records John, his wife, and children.

His will was dated 28th December 1586 and was proved on the 3rd May 1587.There were several branches of this family living at Horton, Shipley and at Ulceby Grange, near Hull all in the family’s home County of Yorkshire. A distant cousin of John, of East Ardsley, Robert Field (baptised 9th March 1605 – 06 died 6th February 1672), of Bayside, Flushing, Long Island in the state of New York. Robert was one of the original Patentees of Flushing.

Their 1819 invoice amounted to £50 9s 10d and included ‘a table desk with double elevation’. The table offered here relates to two ‘Sofa’ table sketches in Gillows’ Estimate Sketch Books, each table on carved pillars and ‘claws’ and with foliate carved scrolled feet on recessed casters.

He was the eldest son of John Sowerby, of Dalston Hall aforesaid and his wife, Mary Pattinson (born 1754 died 1812).As William died unmarried in 1838, his younger brother (and ninth son of his parents), George Sowerby (born 11th July 1794 died 1868) inherited the Putteridge and Lilley estates and the Dalston Hall estate in Cumberland. Although, the Sowerby family were in possession of the Lilley estate well into the 20th Century, George’s grandson, Thomas George Sowerby (born 8th April 1866 died 24th August 1938) sold the family’s original estate of Dalston Hall in 1897 and sold Putteridge Park in 1907.

While Andrew Jones Auctions offers a short description of the piece, the catalog notes and condition reports are not intended to be a complete analysis of the condition of any watch or timepiece. All watches and timepieces offered at auction are often of age and have received much wear during their lifetime. All watches and timepieces are to be sold in ‘as is’ condition and we encourage bidders to evaluate the piece in person prior to bidding.

CITES: Some materials such as coral, shell, horn and bone (to name a few) are subject to import/export regulations in compliance with CITES. Items containing a material listed under CITES protection may require additional licenses or be banned completely from import or export to and from the US and other countries.

BURMA: In accordance with the current US restrictions, import into the US of materials which originated from Burma during the tenure of this restriction (most notably jade and ruby) is not permitted.

In either of these above mentioned cases concerning CITES, Burmese or any restricted material, it is the responsibility of the buyer to obtain any necessary licenses or documentation that is required to ship any materials that fall under these legal restrictions. Failure to obtain permission or licenses to import or export items purchased at auction does not justify cancellation of sale or delay in payment settlement.

Conditions of Sale By bidding at auction, whether present in person or by agent, by absentee bid, telephone, internet or other means, the buyer agrees to be bound by these Conditions of Sale.

1. Unless otherwise indicated, Andrew Jones Auctions, is acting as an agent for the seller (consignor).

2. The ‘bid price’ refers to the highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. The auctioneer has the right to reject any bid, to advance the bidding at his or her absolute discretion and in the event of any dispute between bidders to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer and resell the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, Andrew Jones Auctions sale record shall be conclusive in all respects.

3. The ‘purchase price’ is the sum of the final bid (hammer price) plus the buyer’s premium and applicable sales tax, unless the buyer is exempt by law from such taxes. The buyer’s premium per lot is 25% on the first $500,000; 18% on the amount between $500,001 and $2,000,000; 12% on any amount above $2,000,000. Bidders using Liveauctioneers online bidding platform will be subject to an additional 5% premium.

4. Payment must be received by Andrew Jones Auctions within three business days following the auction. We accept bank wire transfers, checks and credit cards (to a maximum of $50,000). ALL INTERNATIONAL BUYERS WITH ANDREW JONES AUCTIONS MUST PAY BY WIRE TRANSFER. All payments made by personal check will be subject to clearance before purchases can be collected. Buyers who have not purchased from Andrew Jones Auctions previously will be asked to provide photo identification, method of payment and/or financial references prior to the auction. Buyers outside of the United States must submit payment via wire transfer.

5. Buyers shall not take possession of any lot until all amounts due to Andrew Jones Auctions have been paid in full.

Packing material and loading assistance are NOT provided.

6. All lots must be removed within fifteen days of the date of the auction or storage charges of $10/day will be charged for each lot, or property will be sent to offsite storage at the buyer’s expense. If property is not collected within ninety days, it will be considered abandoned and Andrew Jones Auctions reserves the right to retain any payments made and to sell the property in order to recover storage fees.

7. Andrew Jones Auctions does not have in-house shipping services; however, we can provide you with information on third-party shippers for you to contact directly. Andrew Jones Auctions is not responsible for the services provided by third-party shippers.

8. Upon fall of the hammer, title to any offered lot will immediately pass to the highest bidder, subject to compliance by the buyer with these Conditions of Sale. The buyer assumes full risk and responsibility of the property sold, agrees to sign any requested confirmation of purchase and agrees to pay the full purchase price.

9. We reserve the right to withdraw, postpone or cancel any lot or sale before or during the auction for any reason.

10. No lot may be transferred.

11. All property is sold AS-IS. Andrew Jones Auctions, its agents, employees and the consignor, make no warranty or guarantee of title, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, or other warranty or representation regarding the description, authenticity, attribution, period, culture, source, origin, provenance, age, size or condition. 12. Andrew Jones Auctions offers absentee, telephone and internet bidding as a convenience to clients and does not accept responsibility for errors or failure to execute bids for any reason. Internet bidding is offered through third-party online bidding platforms.

13. Unless otherwise stated, lots offered may be subject to a reserve. The reserve is a price that we cannot sell an item below. This price is confidential between Andrew Jones Auctions and the seller. By law, the reserve cannot exceed the low estimate of any given lot. The auctioneer will protect the reserve on behalf of the seller by opening bidding or advancing bidding until reaching the reserve.

14. The copyright on all images, illustrations, digital images and text of any catalog produced by Andrew Jones Auctions are the property of Andrew Jones Auctions. You will not reproduce such text, photographs, illustrations or digital images without our prior written consent.

15. In the event that delivery cannot be made to the buyer because of loss due to fire, theft or any other reason, or a sale cannot be completed, our liability will be limited to the purchase price.

16. Condition reports are offered as a courtesy to our clients and are a statement of opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Andrew Jones Auctions is not responsible for any error or omission. The absence of a condition report on an item does not imply the lot is in perfect condition or free from typical wear or effects commensurate with age. Buyers or their agents are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the condition of any lot prior to bidding.

17. The respective rights and obligations of the parties with respect to these Conditions of Sale and the conduct of the auction shall be governed by and construed, interpreted, applied and enforced in accordance with the laws of the State of California. By bidding at auction, be it in person or by agent, absentee bid, telephone, internet or other means, the buyer shall be deemed to have consented to the jurisdiction of the courts of California.
