THE JOHN NELSON COLLECTION, PART IV | I

Kirk and Anne Douglas Kirk Douglas was an icon of the Golden Age of Hollywood, an illustrious actor, director, producer, author, and philanthropist. After his humble beginnings as the only son of Russian immigrants in upstate New York, Mr. Douglas attended Saint Lawrence University, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and served in the U.S. Navy starting in 1942, shortly after the United States entered WWII. His acting career began in earnest upon his return to New York City in 1944, and he got his first big break in the 1946 film The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. His on-screen physicality, magnetism, and dramatic talent made him a star, and he received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in 1947 for the film Champion. Mr. Douglas would go on to receive two additional Academy Award nominations for his performances in The Bad and the Beautiful and Lust for Life, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy in 1996. Mr. Douglas launched his own production company, Bryna Productions, in 1955, which backed some of his most celebrated films including Spartacus, Paths of Glory and Lonely Are the Brave. Over the course of his seven decade acting career, he appeared in more than 90 films. Mr. Douglas met his wife Anne in Paris in 1953 while she was working as a publicist there. The German-born Anne Douglas, then Anne Buydens, was fluent in four languages, a skill that would prove advantageous in her work for the international film industry and later as an ambassador. Anne and Kirk Douglas’ whirlwind courtship spanned a year and several countries, but they eventually settled down together in Los Angeles and wed in May of 1954. They were married 66 years and had two children together, Peter and Eric, who joined Mr. Douglas’ sons Michael and Joel from his previous marriage. Together, Anne and Kirk Douglas were dedicated to service and philanthropic causes beyond their lives in Hollywood. President John F. Kennedy appointed them goodwill ambassadors for the State Department, in support of American values. Over the course of their tenure, the Douglas’ would travel on missions to over 40 countries. Mr. Douglas went on to receive the Medal of Freedom for his service, and Mrs. Douglas received the Director’s Award from the U.S. Information Agency. The couple created the Douglas Foundation in 1964, which has contributed over $120 million to philanthropic causes over its six decades. The Foundation’s many beneficiaries include the Kirk Douglas Theater, The Anne Douglas Center for Women at the Los Angeles Mission, The Motion Picture and Television Home’s Alzheimers and dementia unit, Sinai Temple’s Kirk and Anne Douglas Childhood Center, and scholarships at St. Lawrence University for minority students. All of the proceeds from this auction will go to the Douglas Foundation.
