CRAFT BURGERS & BEERS By - Jenn Lombari Photography - Marc Figueiredo If you like to go out to eat, you’ve probably noticed that craft burgers are all the rage in food trends this year. Fresh burgers, sourced locally, using only the freshest ingredients to create unique toppings and flavors.

With so many “craft burger” restaurants opening up, it’s important to stay ahead of the game and stand out.

Matt McCreavy has spent decades working in kitchens. Starting out cooking in corporate settings put him on the right track of one day owning his own restaurant; a place where he could be creative; a place that served the best, fresh food and could change with the wants and needs of the customers. He served as the general manager of Doherty’s East Ave Café for about two years until he came into work one day to find they were closing…the next day!

Tying up loose ends over the next week, McCreavy was presented with 12 ShopInRI

the opportunity he had been waiting for. This is what it was all building up to be. He could take over the space he had been working in for two years and he could basically make it into whatever he wanted.

The space needed a makeover and a fresh start. And it was beautifully done. Tables, booths, high tops and a bar area combined can sit about 135 people. Craft Burgers & Beer opened on January 12, 2018 with the necessary renovations, new menu and a rotating list of 57 beers on tap. Old clientele as well as new food and beer lovers have welcomed the new restaurant to the area and the feedback has been nothing but positive.

Upon entering, you’re greeted with a smile by staff members; not because it’s their job, but because they genuinely enjoy working in this environment. You feel like you just walked into a friend’s home and they’ve been

expecting you. Take a look at the menu! At first glance, you know you can’t eat everything but you’re already planning what you’ll try the next time you stop in. More than 80% of the items on the menu are made in house; from the hand crafted burgers, the toppings, perfectly battered chicken fingers, Bavarian pretzels, fries, potato chips…when you eat here, you are eating FRESH. With eleven specialty burgers, it’s hard to choose. McCreavy’s favorite burger on the menu is the French Onion Burger. It’s two ¼ lb beef patties with American cheese, caramelized onions, and onion aioli. The beef that is served comes from a local farm in Massachusetts and is a butchers’ blend of short rib, chuck, fillet, and tenderloin. Proteins are interchangeable if you don’t want beef. You have your choice of hand crafted salmon burgers, chicken burgers, and there is

even a handmade black bean burger for the vegetarians. You can choose a side as well or a premium side for an additional charge. The staff at Craft Burgers & Beer wants you to be happy, so ask questions and they’ll be sure to pair up your meal with the perfect cold beer. Employees are required to taste three drafts per shift that they haven’t tried before so that they can adequately compare, explain and suggest choices to customers. McCreavy insists that “Nothing goes better with a burger than a cold beer.”

Do It Yourself TACO SEASONING It’s so easy to make taco seasoning at home. So why would you buy the spice factory floor sweepings they use for packaged taco seasoning sold in supermarkets? I’m not a huge fan of Mexican cuisine, but every once in a while, I crave a good taco. My tacos don’t resemble most, but that’s OK. It’s all about making it your own.

GOAT CHEESE Just Another Rib ReciSTUFFED MUSHROOMS

This is a great side dish for any special occasion.

And you can substitute to suit your needs. Goat cheese not your speed? Try Gruyère or smoked gouda.

Need it to be gluten-free?

Use GF breadcrumbs. Don’t likemushrooms? Okay…I can’t help you there…

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon granulated garlic 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon crushed pepper flakes 1 teaspoon dried Mexican oregano 1 teaspoon paprika 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 Spanish onion, finely chopped olive oil 2 lbs. grass-fed ground beef Combine all the spice ingredients in a bowl.

Saute the onions in a bit of olive oil until translucent.

Add the beef and saute until cooked, mixing in the spice mixture a little at a time until you’ve used it all.

1 package large white mushrooms SPICE olive oil RUB 1/2 shallot, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, through a press 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, finely chopped pinch of red pepper flakes salt and pepper fresh goat cheese bread crumbs 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped

Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees.

Rinse the mushrooms in cold water to clean them.

Remove the stems of the mushrooms and set them aside. Rub the mushroom caps with olive oil and place them on a baking sheet, open side-down, in a 400-degree oven for a few minutes.

In a pan, sauté the shallot and garlic in a little olive oil. Chop the mushroom stems finely and add them to the pan. Add the thyme and pepper flakes.

Reduce the oven temp to 350 degrees after removing the mushroom caps. Flip the mushroom caps over so that they look like little bowls. Break off a small piece of goat cheese and place it in each mushroom.

Top each with the sautéed shallot mixture. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top and sprinkle parsley over that.

Return the baking sheet to the oven, cooking the mushrooms until they are lightly golden in color, and the cheese has melted.

You can also mix the spices with 1 cup of flour and use it to season chicken before frying…or mix the seasoning with strips of chicken breast or beef for fajitas.

My tacos are a bit unusual. Although I use a soft flour tortilla and my seasoned and cooked ground beef, I spread a little Thousand Island dressing and chop some roasted golden beets.

But this taco meat goes great with the standard beans, shredded lettuce, guac, and salsa as well.

Summertime is in full force in the Ocean State, and what many locals and visitors look forward to each year as they escape from the city heat to the beach towns near RI’s coast are the state’s fresh, from trap to shore-LOBSTERS. After a relaxing day at any one of Rhode Island’s sandy white beaches, or while on a scenic drive with the family to enjoy the numerous coastal activities in and around southern RI, many visitors end the day with a hop over to Galilee, home of the state’s largest fishing fleet, to grab some freshly caught lobsters to take home.

In Galilee Harbor, people from all over bustle in and out, while babbling gulls and summer visitors wander the docks.

Cooking lobsters at home can be a fun experience. Lobster can be delicious when steamed, with just a side of drawn butter.

Getting into the shell is not always easy, but lobster lovers will agree that the work it takes using those awkward shell crackers and picks is well worth the ultimate reward.

Another option for cooking your catch at home is a lobster boil, which is a seafood lover’s ultimate meal. This feast consists of lobster, steamers, mussels, little necks, white fish, shrimp, crabs, corn ears, white potatoes, pieces of hot dogs or kielbasa for flavor, and beer, all boiled together in one big pot. Chipotle BBQ Sauce

Prep Time - 50 Minutes / Cook Time - 10 Minutes

Ingredients:

8 ounces bacon 20 shrimp (21/25 count), shelled, deveined 1/2 cup BBQ sauce 1/4 cup canola oil 3 tablespoons chipotle pepper in adobo 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon red chile flakes 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions:

Special equipment: 5 to 8 bamboo skewers Soak the bamboo skewers in water, to keep from burning during grilling.

Partially cook the bacon; cut in half, and let cool on paper towels. Wrap the bacon around the shrimp, and skewer with bamboo through the point where the bacon ends meet (to keep from unraveling).

Skewer 3 to 5 shrimp per bamboo.

Combine the BBQ sauce, oil, chipotle, lemon juice, mustard, chile flakes, black pepper and cayenne in a blender and puree. Separate the sauce in half, one for basting and one for dipping.

Cook the bacon-wrapped shrimp on a grill over medium heat. When the shrimp begin to turn pink, begin basting with the chipotle sauce.

Serve with the remaining sauce on the side for dipping.

Brick Oven Pizza is All the Rage in Rhode Island

By Julia Romano Debates over the best slice in town can be heated, as any pizza fan knows. Some people are most tempted by pizza with “the works,” or in other words, lots of toppings-tomato sauce or fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, black olives, chicken and barbecue sauce, eggplant, peppers, onions, anchovies, and pineapple. Some people favor a thick crust, while others prefer one that is thin and has a crunch to it.

The first United States’ pizzeria ever to be documented was in Manhattan, NY in 1905. Throughout the years, non Neapolitan variations of pizza have emerged and are still favorites of pizza foodies everywhere. There are also endless pizzerias in the US that cook pizza, either in a pizza oven or on a grill. And for many reasons, whatever they do to create their “masterpizzas” works very well, as the result is a satisfying, delicious “slice of heaven.”

For my taste, it’s impossible to resist an authentic Neapolitan Italian pizza cooked in a brick oven.

Naples, Italy is known as the “birthplace of pizza.”

The Neapolitans were not seeking to make a culinary statement in 1889, when they first created what we know as pizza. Baker Raffaele Esposito from Naples is said to have created the first pizza pie while looking for a way to make a meal that was full of flavor, yet inexpensive and affordable for his poor Italian neighbors. Even today, the Neapolitans use their customary fresh and minimal toppings and cooking method so that each ingredient can be savored. A thin layer of either fresh tomatoes or tomato sauce, with fresh mozzarella and some fresh basil atop homemade dough, and a light drizzling of

extra virgin olive oil over the entire pie after it is cooked does the trick just perfectly. The crust of an authentic Neapolitan pizza is prepared with freshly made dough and hand stretched, which allows the pie to cook evenly, with a light and fluffy inside and a crisp crust. From there, the pie goes into a burning hot brick oven to cook it to perfection.

When making a pizza at home, the biggest mistake we often make is to cook it improperly. It can be undercooked, with a doughy inside, which can occur when cooked in an oven on low heat for too long of a time, or burned when the pizza is cooked on a grill and the bottom of the pie cooks too fast, while the inside dough remains undercooked.

A brick oven emits just the right amount of heat (temperature can rise up to more than 900 degrees) to cook a pizza really fast (not much more than a few minutes), and to perfection. But most people do not have a brick oven in their kitchens, so they use what they do have-an oven or maybe a grill, and the result is often a pizza that is edible, yet not quite something to rave about. The good news is that many RI restaurants have finally caught on and a brick oven is now often a standard piece of equipment in their kitchens.

In Rhode Island, there are dozens of restaurants with brick ovens that know how to satisfy. Some use coal, while others use wood. The difference between coal and wood although noticeable, is subtle, and for me, not what ultimately determines the quality and taste of a pizza.

The menu is long and filled with variety, so that visitors have plenty of choices to sink their teeth into, including the unique Portuguese-baked

First and foremost, having coffee and cocktails is a must at any optimal brunch. The word “brunch” was originated in the late 19th century in England. It did notbecome popular in the United States until the 1930’s .

The inventor of the brunch is said to be Guy Beringer, an English author, who proposed the concept of this combination meal in an essay he created-Brunch: A Plea-which he wrote in 1895. The essay was formed to assist those who nursed hangovers every Sunday morning from the night before. The original purpose of a brunch meal was to rid oneself of headaches and give rest to unsettled stomachs before consuming something solid. Ever since, we’ve been enjoying a spread of breakfast and lunch foods, accompanied by bloody marys and champagne mimosas.

Race to the Stage Summer’s End Concert One of the town’s most anticipated summer events is the popular “Race to the Stage.” This high energy competition was initially formed to identify new talent to compete and which three of the chosen winners have the honor of performing at Summer’s End, a Labor Day weekend concert held at Eldredge Field. In addition, Race to the Stage contestants will be the opening acts for the headlining Navy Band Northeast Pops Ensemble.

Those whom entered the 2018 competition submitted a video of themselves or their bands to be considered. The selected finalists were asked to compete on stage at the Greenwich Odeum on May 7, in front of an expert panel of judges who chose three acts that will get to perform at the Summer’s End Concert in September. Each phase of this competition provides participants a great opportunity to get their names out there and to expose their talent to gain more recognition.

This year, 12 acts were chosen from 32 aspiring performers from as far away as Pennsylvania and Maine. Aspirants submitted videos to a review team and on April 29, four judges – all local music professionals who had not seen the video submissions – rated the live performances and provided feedback.

Goddard Memorial State Park Is an expansive green space shared by Warwick and East Greenwich. Not only is its small beach the northernmost way to enjoy Narragansett Bay, the park has picnic, grilling, and field areas perfect for gatherings, and also offers horseback riding.

Scalloptown Park is at the end of Rocky Hollow Road and overlooks Greenwich Bay. The park, though small, offers just under a mile of walking trails with plenty of benches to sit and view the bay. The park is also popular with locals to bring their dogs. Greenwich Bay once was one of the best shell fishing locations in Rhode Island. Scallops were the main catch here; thus, the area became known as Scalloptown. Take a walk to the hidden Scalloptown Park to enjoy the area along the shore of the bay.

STYLEWEEK NORTHEAST INAUGURAL BRIDAL EVENT

Last month, STYLEWEEK Northeast launched their inaugural bridal event that brought together the community, bridal designers, vendors, and press.

STYLEWEEK Bridal took place on Sunday, June 3rd at The Dorrance, which provided the perfect ambience with its beautiful ornate interior. The event was not like the ordinary expos that take place in and around New England- it was much more! It was an experience.

It made for a beautiful Sunday outing for all of those who attended.

Vendors were able to display their products and services, while networking with one another and attendees; press captured beautiful designs gliding down the runway and special moments that occurred throughout the day; brides-to-be were able to gain inspiration, ideas, and purchase gifts for their bridesmaids, as well as for themselves; and attendees had the chance to shop, sip on cocktails, and enjoy the

fashion show.

Leading up to the runway shows, attendees were invited to participate in cocktail hour. Following the fashion shows, designers displayed their favorite garments from their collections in the form of live model installations for press and attendees to see up close.

The live presentations were showcased on the second level of The Dorrance, where there was a champagne bar, RI Monthly Engaged Lounge, and the Uniquely Chic Vintage lounge. The rest of the afternoon was full of vendor interactions and there was also a special appearance of a living art statue from TEN31.

The runway show portion was comprised of four designers that showcased their own twists on bridal wear. Each designer showcased unique bridal looks that intrigued and captivated the audience. Here is a recap of each collection!

Carissa Lynne Designs Carissa Frazier of Carissa Lynne Designs opened the show with a collection full of timeless romance. The garments stayed true to the classic white and cream hues of bridal wear, however, these familiar colors were paired with unconventional styles. Rompers, long and short dresses, and two pieces were created with dainty, lace fabrics. Carissa also put her signature lingerie touch to each look.

Franklin Rogers Franklin Rogers showcased their top collections from their menswear specialty store on the runway. The looks were comprised of mixed and matched colors and patterns that were eye catching and sophisticated.

Each of the male models brought the suits to life and charmed the attendees with their suave demeanors.

Arianna Nicola Designs Arianna Buonanno of Arianna Nicola Designs closed the show by presenting looks not only for the bride on her wedding day, but for the bridal shower and even for the bridesmaids as well. The eccentric collection was fun loving, flirty, and possessed fairytale vibes. Lavender, blush, dusty blues, and florals appeared in an array of creative styles. For the finale look, a stunning, floor length veil took the runway, leaving the audience in awe.

Candice Wu’s collection was a dream for the bride who aspires to be their own Cinderella on their wedding day. Her line was comprised of breath taking floor length gowns that cascaded down the runway. Traditional silhouettes such as balls gowns and mermaids were embellished with dazzling jewels and adorned with lace appliques.

How do you feel about working out at the gym?

Many of my clients tell me that they aren’t comfortable at the gym for usually a few main reasons.The most common thing I’m told is that they don’t know how to use the equipment correctly and/or are unsure about what exercises to do.

Even if you are working with a personal trainer or taking classes with an instructor, utilizing a gym’s resources is a good way for you to do something else on your days when you are working out alone. Another reason people are uncomfortable going to a gym is that they feel self conscious working out in front of so many other people, which I believe goes right along with the first reason.

If you are confident in your workout and ability to use the equipment, you will likely feel more confident about working out amongst other people.

How many times have you gone to the gym, jumped on the treadmill or another cardio machine, stayed on it for awhile, and then exited the gym? While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, cardio alone on a regular basis isn’t going to help you achieve your best results.

Let’s first go over some tips and simple exercises to maximize your workouts.

Strength training is the best way to build muscle, tone, burn fat, and it even improves bone density! Have your workout planned and ready before you hit the gym.

Create a weekly schedule for yourself, so you know exactly what you’re doing. If you are working with a trainer, ask them to help to create a weekly plan so you know what to work on when working out without a trainer. Working out with a trainer will ensure you’re not overworking anything. If you’re not working with a trainer, be sure to work different muscle groups each time.

Core and cardio can be done with each workout, but doesn’t necessarily need to be the primary focus. If you’re working shoulders and back and using dumbbells, you are at most times inadvertently strengthening your core. If one of your shoulder exercises includes something like mountain climbers, this is giving you some cardio by raising your heart rate and working your core! Try to include a few exercises like this into each of your workouts to get the most out of it.

While the strength training machines at the gym can be good for people who are unsure of their form, or 42 ShopInRI

possibly have an injury, try your best to stick with cable machines, dumbbells, floor exercises, kettlebells, and bodyweight. Always research an exercise to make sure you are doing it correctly; incorrect form can lead to injury. Start with a weight that feels challenging after a few reps, but you can still lift it. Don’t start with the highest possible weigh because this can also lead to injury. Start light and work your way up and pay no mind to what anyone else is doing. Everyone starts somewhere.

Trying new workouts at the gym may cause you to feel uncomfortable, but once you become familiar with the equipment and start working out regularly, you will feel much better about your workouts, and before you know it, going to the gym will feel just as normal as shopping at the supermarket! Stepping outside of your comfort zone is the only way to grow. Don’t let the fear of discomfort stop you from reaching your goals. Remember, we ALL started somewhere, every single one of us. No one has to use a gym to get fit. You can workout literally anywhere! The gym is great because no matter the weather it’s the same inside. Sometimes it’s the best way for people to get focused; too many interruptions at home can hold us back. Exercise because you love your body not because you hate it. Keep this mindset and you can achieve anything.

1. Drink Lots of Water Drink clean, fresh, pure water regularly throughout the day. Start the day off with two big glasses of warm water as soon as you wake up in the morning.

This will reset your thirst mechanism for the entire day and works very well.

Adding some lemon to warm water also has many benefits including helping with the digestive system.

Everyone has heard that drinking at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day is necessary to keep hydrated and for other health benefits. I believe that everyone should try to drink much more. For those who are not water drinkers, it may be that some days are easier than others to drink that much water, but try to force yourself to drink water on the days you just don’t want it. Water is so natural and has many health benefits. For example, water is one of the top substances that the colon needs to survive, and dehydration can shut down the colon.

2. Listen to your bowels.

Ok, not the most pleasant topic, but it is what it is and we are all human.

Although a subject that is not the most easy to address, it is certainly one of the most important functions of the

body. When you have the urge to have a bowel movement, go. If you’re too busy during the day to go to the bathroom, there’s something seriously out of alignment in your life.

If you absolutely cannot break away from what you are doing, start making preparations to go to the restroom in no longer than 10 minutes. This is the timeframe when you will get the next urge. If you miss this second urge, it will not occur again for this particular bowel movement.

3. Exercise!

My favorite! Exercise stimulates the circulation and the lymphatics. With more blood flowing into the digestive tract, you can have a more expedient removal of waste products. One study at the Washington University School of Medicine reported that one has a 24% less chance of developing colon cancer if they exercise. Walking brisk-

ly for up to six hours a week could be enough to reduce the risk by 24%. Being a fitness instructor, this one is so important to me. Exercise is not only about being thin, but rather about being healthy. The #1 medication for high blood pressure and many other chronic conditions is exercise.

4. Eat plenty of fiber.

Another “not so pleasant” topic, but it’s important to know that fiber pulls the mucus off from the walls of the intestine as it’s passing through. Some of the most important foods in your diet are fruits. Fruits contain substances that can dissolve some of this mucus, yet many people feel that they should limit fruit in their diet. The fruits that are the best for this purpose are the acidic ones, such as grapefruit and oranges.

Many of the “no carb, low carb” diets eliminate fruit from the diet. I could not disagree with this more. I believe

5. Chew your food.

Enjoy what you are eating. Most of us eat as if it’s our last meal. Well, if that was the case, wouldn’t you want to enjoy it and make it last? Chewing plays a huge role in the digestion of your food, so take time to chew.

Vegetables also contain a lot of fiber that helps brush away the toxins, while providing many medicinal substances that can impact health in a positive way. For example, onions and garlic contain antibacterial and antifungal substances that can kill harmful bacteria and fungi living in the intestinal tract.

How much fiber are we talking? “Plenty of fiber” means a minimum of 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day.

The 25 grams of fiber is for those who are shorter in stature; the higher number is for those who are taller.

By: Mark Berger Dustin Falke prides himself as a problem solver. He corrected many issues through dedication and effort.

That knowledge carried him through a stint with the United States Air Force, where he served for nine years as Staff Sergeant. Upon his discharge, he incorporated his business this past February with his wife, Allison, which is dedicated to helping people live better lives.

That idea became the genesis of Precision Concrete Raising, a business devoted to fixing sunken floors, steps and other high-volume traffic areas. The company uses high-density polyurethane foam to fill in the voids left under the concrete slabs in order to raise the foundation.

This option can be a better choice because it saves time, money and hassle compared with slab replacement, Allison Falke said.

“This becomes a quality of life issue, particularly for elderly people and other people who need help moving around,” said Falke, who also works as an occupational therapy assistant.

“Some people are afraid to go outside because they are fearful that they will either fall or have some type of accident. Sunken concrete can lead to them tripping, falling down and suffering significant injuries.”

She noted there are few businesses that employ the polyurethane process to raise slabs to their original position. Because many other companies use a “mudjacking” process, there would be far more materials needed and a longer wait for the surface to be used, according to Falke.

“We are one of very few companies

in this area that use high-density polyurethane foam to raise the slab, called polyjacking,” she said. “This is different from ‘mudjacking’ because we use smaller holes to pump in the foam. Using foam is less impactful on the environment because it’s two pounds of material versus 100 lbs of mudjacking material. When we finish, the slab is ready for immediate use, whereas mudjacking requires one to three days before it can be used.

“This process is a nearly invisible repair solution to sinking concrete, which is really beneficial for residential properties,” she added.

Additionally, Falke said the differences between polyjacking and mudjacking goes beyond time and costs.

She said the materials used for polyjacking lasts longer than the other way. She said polyjacking keeps its shape and density for over a decade.

Conversely, mudjacking erodes over time and from animals digging into the area.

The holes drilled into the slab are also smaller in polyjacking (a fiveeighths-inch hole—about the size of a penny--compared with a half-inch incision, or the size of a golf ball, for mudjacking), which can mean less chance for the concrete to break apart over time, she said.

BEFORE “There is a value in not having the concrete slab compromised and having the problem fixed correctly but efficiently as well,” she said. “Residents are often commenting on how polyjacking is more convenient in not negatively impacting their daily lives.That is one of the main reasons why they choose to use polyjacking over mudjacking Falke said the company uses a three-step process to fix the affected areas. First, holes are drilled in the areas that need filling. Next, polyurethane foam gets pumped through a tube that works its way into the concrete and fills in the injured area until it returns to its original level. Finally, the area gets patched up with new cement that dries immediately. She said the process usually takes about two hours for most jobs and up to four hours for tougher projects.

She said several factors might lead to a residence having sunken concrete. Falke said they can usually determine possible problems if they either see soil not draining properly, tree roots taking in too much water, there is poor drainage and/or if there was compaction during the building process.

Falke said not only does the process take less time than other traditional avenues; they are an environmentally-friendly company that uses EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) approved products and looks to serve the community moving forward.

The Newport Jazz Festival® was founded in 1954 by socialite Elaine Lorillard, who, together with husband Louis Lorillard, financed the festival for many years. The couple hired jazz impresario George Wein to organize the event to help them bring jazz to the resort town of Newport. The event was the first jazz festival held in the country.

Thousands of visitors return annually to the quaint resort town of Newport to a venue that hosts world class musicians, including legendary iconic figures and contemporary geniuses. For three full days, entertainment is the featured draw for the audiences as they are led by jamming entertainment on four unique stages. Situated on the grounds of Fort Adams State Park at the Mouth of Newport Harbor, with panoramic views of the Newport Bridge and the East Passage, the festival also offers different options for food, crafts, and a number of exhibits.

The event is a production of Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. at two of Newport's historic landmarks: the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino and Fort Adams State Park.

Two of the most famous performances in the festival's history are Miles Davis' 1955 solo of "'Round Midnight" and the Duke Ellington Orchestra's lengthy 1956 performance of "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue", featuring a 27-chorus saxophone solo by Paul Gonsalves.

The 1957 performances of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Carmen McRae were released on the album Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday at Newport (1958).

Performances at the 1961 festival included Judy Garland, coming off the success of her two concerts at Carnegie Hall, the opening night of which was documented on the Grammy winning album Judy at Carnegie Hall. Garland was on tour to promote the album, mostly to sold out audiences.

wHY ARE DOGS MORE RECEPTIVE TO BABY TALK?

Science proves that “baby talk” does work when speaking to your four paw friend. Few dog owners can resist using baby talk with their dog. Next time someone makes fun of you for it, tell them that sci-

ence is on your side. Why do we use this exaggerated high pitched voice when speaking to babies and pets? It’s because it is thought to help babies learn their language. When using this high pitch tone and by making vowels more clear, babies not only learn the language quicker, it also strengthens social bonds with parents.

I recently read an article in a journal called Speaking Dog. I was curious to know if it really made a difference when we use baby talk to a dog since the dog is never going to speak. The article explained how a study was done as scientists asked two people to sit with speakers in their laps that played recordings of their own voices. First, to see if a dog prefers your voice over another, and second, to test if the tone in which you speak affects a dog’s reaction.

Many believe that dogs are highly sensitive to things like the gender of a person, the size of a person, etc., so that’s why during this test, the recording of the speech always matched the person that was holding the speaker. During the study, 37 dogs (pet dogs) were recruited. The dogs were leashed and brought 60 ShopInRI

into a room with two people. The animals then heard two types of recorded speech, a normal, conversational tone and a dog, baby talk tone while exaggerating words relevant to the dog, like “treat.”

The team of scientists then measured how much time the dog spent looking at each person as the recordings played, as well as how much time the canines spent with each person after being taken off their leashes. It was observed that the dogs spent more time looking toward the person using dog-directed speech, or baby talk, and they chose, on average, to spend more time with the person who spoke in this tone.

Another test was conducted where 13 dogs were trained to remain on a (FMRI) machine, which measures blood flow. More blood mean that more oxygen is being delivered to a given area and implies that region is being used more than usual. The dogs’ brains were observed as they listened to human speech. Dogs heard praise in a friendly tone, praise in a neutral tone, and words they hadn’t previously been exposed to with both kinds of tones.

When the dogs recognized words they were familiar with, a part of their brain became more active (the left hemisphere). Both the left and right hemispheres of the dogs’ brains, where the reward centers are located, were only activated when they heard praise in a positive tone.

There is more research to be done, but I think it’s becoming clear that dogs and other animals are smarter than we think!

Melina Trudeau, Krista Schmitz and Michael Forte Jr., of The Law Firm of Olenn & Penza LLP, were recently named Partners after each achieved outstanding results in pushing the firm forward and successes inside the courtroom.

Trudeau, an attorney licensed to practice in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, joined the firm in 2004. Her work focuses on aiding small business clients and individual business owners in making practical decisions regarding their legal needs. Her clients also include mental health providers, individuals affected by malpractice and attorneys. She litigated in both jury and non-jury trials in Rhode Island and represented her clients at countless mediations and arbitrations.

Additionally, Trudeau focuses on creating practices and procedures for her clients to implement to reduce legal costs, drafting and negotiating contracts, addressing collection issues, and resolving employment related disputes.

Krista Schmitz began her career in insurance defense, where various insurance companies retain her services to represent their clients in lawsuits filed against them for car accidents, slip and falls, legal malpractice and other losses. She also uses this knowledge to represent individuals who suffer personal injuries in car accidents, slip and falls, and other types of accidents to recover against the responsible party.

Additionally, she represents people who feel wronged by employment discrimination—be it race, age, gender, disability or sexual harassment.

“People contact me during very difficult and confusing times in their lives,” she said. “They have either been involved in an accident or have been wrongfully terminated, and they want another voice. I believe that it is important for me to assist them as an attorney and, sometimes more importantly, as a person who can understand their situation and is there to listen to their side of the story.”

Schmitz represented various police officers and municipalities for lawsuits filed against them alleging civil rights violations and negligence. She currently serves as Board Counsel for the West Warwick Pension Board.

Since joining the firm in 2007, Schmitz received the honor of being named a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers from 2013-2017. She practices law in all state and federal courts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Schmitz is a member of the Women’s Bar Association and serves on the Kent County Bar Association Executive Board. She is currently an assistant chair of the committee for the Rhode Island Bar Association Annual Meeting in June 2018, where she will be moderating a program on the topic of sexual harassment. Krista received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Northeastern University and her law degree from Suffolk University Law School in 2007.

Krista is a lifelong resident of Cranston. She and her husband have two kids enrolled in Cranston Public Schools and she serves as the current Parents and Teachers of Park View (PTPV) co-president at Park View Middle School and is the former PTO President of Dutemple Elementary.

Michael Forte, Jr., who has been with the firm for a decade, can litigate in all of the state and federal courts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He regularly works cases covered by the press including the Providence and Pawtucket pension cases, the Central Coventry Fire District Bankruptcy and the Rhode Island State Troopers Association lawsuit against the Attorney General. STUDENTS CAN SHAPE THE FUTURE OF FLYING

Legislation introduced to increase funding for state’s smaller airports.

An idea during a recent Northern Rhode Island Chamber networking event resulted in two-dozen Cumberland High School students learning about the aviation industry, its opportunities, and the possibilities it may have on their futures.

Nearly two-dozen students from Michael Stead’s Robotics and Engineering Class visited North Central State Airport in Smithfield to learn about the details of these trades and to speak with several pilots, mechanics, and other industry professionals. The day included chances to learn about the inner workings of plane engines, touching various switches and gadgets, and discovering the numerous jobs that will become available.

The final point regarding an applicant shortage was not lost on anyone either scheduling this event or local officials, including Lt. Gov. Dan McKee, State Sen. Stephen Archambault, Democrat of Smithfield, and Northern Rhode Island Chamber Senior Vice President Paul Ouellette, who all lent their support and experiences with the local airport.

Sen. Archambault, citing the current state of local airports throughout Rhode Island, said that he recently introduced a bill to help support more viable options.

The bill was also introduced in the House by State Reps.

Thomas Winfield, Democrat of Smithfield, and Gregory Constantino, Democrat of Lincoln, asking to revamp the other six airports around the state.

If enacted, this legislation would increase the number of years the Department of Transportation may lease airport property where a substantial improvement/ building is constructed from 30 years to 50 years. It would also increase the number of directors on the Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) from seven to nine, with one appointment from a list of three candidates from the Rhode Island Pilots Association (RIPA) and one appointment from a list of three candidates from the Rhode Island General Aviation Business Owners Association (RIGABOA).

The Smithfield democratic senator said that with all the chances to train new pilots, the quality of the local airports to educate them raises concerns.

“North Central and other municipal airports in RI are in serious disrepair and need immediate

economic revitalization, upkeep, and downright TLC,” Sen. Archambault said. “Sadly, business owners who provide an important source of commerce and revenue to Rhode Island (over $160 million annually) are not a priority to Rhode Island Airport Corporation. It is clear to me that RIAC could do a better job. We can’t forget the other smaller and critically important airports that make up RI’s aviation industry.”

Local businessman and Northern Rhode Island Chamber member David Bellenoit said that there will be many pilots, engineers, mechanics, and other related fields retiring, thus, increasing the need for qualified replacements. Bellenoit said that the issue is not so much with the industry itself, but how reachable those goals are for students to reach.

“Kids often think about becoming police officers, firefighters, or doctors,” said Bellenoit, who has significant flying experience. “They don’t look into becoming pilots or mechanics because they think that goal is unattainable. The truth is there are numerous indemand jobs, and the chances they could have seeing the world and doing things they initially didn’t think were possible will be in their hands.”

Among the students who took a seat in one of the planes was CHS freshman Liam Nichols. He found sitting in a pilot’s seat “pretty exciting” compared with sitting in class. However, the lessons Nichols said he learned in class were easily understood once he stepped on the tarmac.

Nichols’ classmate, sophomore Vincent Tarara, explained his fascination with aircraft from a much younger age. His reason for wanting to be on the field trip was simple. “I want to become a pilot,” said Tarara.

“I want to join the United States Air Force, but I’ve been interested in becoming a pilot for six years. I also love being in the pilot’s seat and having the responsibility of other people’s lives in my hands.”

That was Stead’s hope when he first arranged this trip with the Chamber and AirVentures Flying School’s NAFI Master Flight Instructor Doug Auclair and others several months ago. Stead said that having students see what the industry involves and the difference they could make should resonate with them. “It’s not just flying aircraft that students should consider in choosing an industry,” Stead stated.

Lt. Gov. McKee urged the students to follow their dreams. The former Cumberland Mayor and CHS

graduate pointed out the advantages of learning about many trades and testing out what interests them most.

Sen. Archambault shared that when he was the students’ age, he traded in his Trans-Am for a chance to become a pilot. While taking pilot lessons, he was ingrained with his flight teacher’s lessons about making sure he gives himself enough time to prepare for landings and never taking anything for granted—particularly in the air.

To encourage more students to consider aviation careers, two $1,000 flight scholarships generated by NE Aviation, AirVentures, AOPA, and the Northern RI Chamber of Commerce were granted to CHS students Stephen Poirier and Dominic Passanante.

The remaining students were all given a free flight instruction class from AirVentures.

ompanies that rely on using commercial trucks often need several aspects to run smoothly in order to be successful. First, they must purchase the right vehicles for their particular needs. Then, business owners need to ensure their respective fleets work well under extreme conditions. They also need access to new equipment, as needed. Finally, fleet vehicles need to be serviced when issues arise, meaning getting them fixed and returned.

New England Truck Solutions (NETS), located on 140 Industrial Drive in North Smithfield and at 125 Industrial Drive, does all of that and more for their clients.

In addition to having those services inside their 50,000 sq. ft. facilities, the company provides graphic design, collision repairs, scheduled maintenance options, fleet graphics, free pick-up/ delivery, and other services.

NETS President Jason Jarvis said that he has the ideal location given his numerous clients throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

“We service all of New England; we have daily pick-ups as far south as

Bethel, Connecticut to as far north as Portsmouth, New Hampshire,” said Jarvis. “Our clients understand that if their trucks and vehicles are not operating properly, then they are not making any money. We service companies that may have just one tow truck, to businesses that have thousands of units. NETS employees pride themselves as a full-service organization—from the purchasing of trucks to maintaining them throughout their use.”

NETS has several well-known clients, including Cardi’s Furniture, Peapod (Stop & Shop Supermarket’s mobile delivery service), Ocean State Job Lot, Ryder, Penske, and NEHDS

Logistics, among others. They currently have 60 technicians onsite working either morning shifts or afternoon shift running from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Jarvis said that type of production helps his clients get their vehicles out faster—and keeps customers happy.

The company began in 1995, however, Jarvis’ passion for this line of work dates back even further.

His father, Mark Jarvis, worked at International Harvester as a truck salesman. Jarvis said that he would clean up the trucks, which included stripping off the decals on the side.

services, and his ability to do the work, convinced him to not return to college. This decision led to Jarvis building the facility at 125 Industrial Drive in 2004. He later opened another facility across the street in 2015.

He pointed out that the the support of HINO Corporate makes this a one-of-a-kind, one-stop shop. This allows NETS to collaborate with its customers in becoming their full-scale partner.

Other industry leaders have taken note of NETS’ accomplishments in the field.

NETS is the largest HINO dealership in New England, and boasts the feat of receiving the Yokozuna Award consecutively five times. NETS has a wall at their older building dedicated to the awards and recognitions they have received since they opened. Jarvis said that those honors are not lost on either himself or his employees.

The HINO executives in Japan made a huge commitment in making us the first company like this in the country—and it is right here in Rhode Island.”

They would also be on the road for more than 200 days a year, which Jarvis admitted could be tough for families who deal with that type of lifestyle.

Jarvis is contemplating expanding the facility even more.

He envisions building a third facility to accommodate the increasing workload. Although he is unsure where the building will be located, where they are now makes sense given its central location for the numerous businesses they serve.

They are also looking for qualified professionals to help in their facility. Jarvis said that NETS would like to hire “Class A” Mechanics, Body/Trailer Mechanics and Graphic Installers to keep up with the increasing demands.

“In 20 years, we’ve had a lot of the same customers,” Jarvis said. “We work within their needs instead of the other way around. Working with the customers gives them the peace of mind knowing that their vehicles are in good hands.”
