American Airlines Reverses Unpopular Carry-On Bag Policy

American Airlines last year introduced basic economy tickets that did not allow fliers to bring carry-on luggage, but the airline has now announced a reversal of that decision. Starting in September, customers who purchase basic economy fares will be allowed to bring a free carry-on bag, Dallas News reports; as USA Today explains, they were previously limited to a “personal item” that could be stowed under the seat in front of them. Though it is explained during the booking process, the policy often led to unhappy customers at the gate. “We got to a point where we weren’t competitive,” says CEO Doug Parker. “For price sensitive customers who are the buyers of this, there’s a big airline out there who doesn’t charge for the carry-on.” Though he didn’t name it, Delta Airlines already allows fliers with basic economy tickets to bring carry-on bags. American recently saw what the CEO calls its “most challenging” quarter since 2013, reporting a second quarter profit of $566 million Thursday. That’s down 34.5% from the same period last year. It’s hoping changes like this can improve its outlook. “There are now filters on things like Google search that ask you if you want to bring a carry-on, and if you say yes, the American flights don’t show up nearly as high as they did before because it adds $20 to our fare,” says Parker. “We have to take that into consideration.” Basic economy fares, a step down from regular economy fares, still will not allow flight changes or upgrades; will require passengers to board last; and will not allow passengers to choose their seats in advance.

Ryan Lochte posted a photo for the world to see, and the US Anti-Doping Agency noticed. It got him suspended—again. The longtime US swimming star has been banned from competition until July 2019, which means the 12-time Olympic medalist cannot compete as planned in the national championships that start this week in California. Lochte will also be ineligible for other top meets, including the Pan Pacific Championships later this year and next year's world championships, the AP reports. "This is devastating," Lochte said. He did not take a banned substance. But he got an intravenous injection of vitamins in May— and since it exceeded 100 milliliters, no matter what was involved, he broke anti-doping rules. The 14-month ban, retroactive to May 24 and announced Monday by USADA, is his second in less than two years following his 10-month suspension for his behavior during a drunken incident that created widespread scorn at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Lochte said he took the IV because both his wife and his son were ill and had recently visited hospitals, and that he didn't want to get sick as well. He said the IV contained B-12 and other vitamins that could be purchased at any pharmacy. He and his wife both got IV infusions in Gainesville, Florida, he said, to bolster their immune systems. Lochte's violation came to light when he posted the photo of him getting the IV on his social media accounts. That triggered the USADA investigation, one that Lochte "fully cooperated" with according to US officials. "Lochte received an intravenous infusion of permitted substances at an infusion clinic," the USADA announcement of the suspension said. Under most circumstances, athletes cannot receive IVs unless related to a hospitalization or when allowed under the terms of a USADA-approved exemption—and Lochte fell into neither of those categories. "I've been swimming my whole life and I've been monitored by USADA for my entire competitive career," Lochte said. "I have never taken a prohibited substance. I have never attempted to gain any advantage over my competition by putting anything illegal in my body. I would never do that." Suspensions for use of an IV are extremely rare.

Grace’s Stuffies are a locally-inspired labor of love, a handed-down take on an RI culinary seafood standard found exclusively at independent hometown grocer, Dave’s Marketplace. Namesake, Grace, lived her whole life in Rhode Island. After she passed away in 2007, her daughter discovered numerous recipes among her belongings. “She was my best friend,” CEO and founder Cheryl Ursillo said. “Going through her things fell to me, and the stuffie recipe was one of many I found. She made them from scratch every Christmas Eve; everyone raved about them. Then I began to make them. Because I was a career woman, I didn’t do a lot of cooking. I developed that after. When you’re retired you have a lot of time on your hands and get very creative.” “It goes back close to 40 years,” Ursillo said about the recipe’s origins. “They are exceptionally good – I don’t say that just because I own the company – if people try them and they’re not delicious, it’s a one and done. I know they’re that good; there is nothing else like them out there.” The idea to make, package and sell her mom’s homemade stuffies went through an indirect path. Ursillo put much

It was something she believed in, and she invites any seafood fan to taste the results. “It’s a unique brand of a traditional New England favorite,” Ursillo says. “It’s not a staple that you need every week in your house, but it seems to me that when you want a stuffie you want one that is exceptionally good. The taste is going to linger. I had a friend call me the other day and say ‘I’m getting a craving.’” “Think about your favorite foods,” Ursillo continued. “Don’t you remember the taste long after you ate it? The seafood is by far the most expensive ingredient.” Stuffed clams are made in many seaside communities, but the colloquial term ‘stuffies’ seems Rhody originated. Stuffies can have many fillings, but the main components are chopped quahog packed together with breadcrumbs and served in those glossy purple-tinged hard-shells. Grace’s are four-ouncers, an Ocean of flavors heaping over the shell with pepperoni, onion, parsley, scallops, and clams. “As Mark Patinkin said regarding the quahog,” Ursillo wrote. “Other states have them, but Narragansett Bay stands out as their most notable home ground, to the point where quahoggers are as much a state symbol as lobstermen in Maine.” “This is the Ocean State,” Ursillo said. “The quahog is the official shellfish. The mission statement says we strive to do one thing and do it exceptionally well: to ensure that we add something very special to your table.” A teacher and administrator before retiring in 2008, Ursillo’s business sense was sparked by a Today Show segment on entrepreneurship. The sentiments resonated, giving her staging to go from idea to reality. “[Author Donny] Deutsch kept talking about finding your niche in a crowded market,” Ursillo explained. “You didn’t have to have the only product of its kind – there’re lots of chocolate chip cookies – you just need to find your competitive edge.

They are manufactured by a company called Yankee Trader Seafood, up in Pembroke, Mass, which is south of Boston. The proximity was important for shipping purposes. It’s a homemade recipe, rather than a recipe made for bulk.” “The recipe…right at home,” Ursillo continued. “The inspiration close by at the Learning Connection and at the Biltmore where the Sam Adam’s Beer seminar was held. The opportunity through Dave’s marketplace.” While studying entrepreneurship and the food industry, Ursillo discovered the acronym MPOD: meaningful point of differentiation, as well as the adage ‘doing well by doing good,’ and the RI Foundation Slogan: it’s all in our own backyard. Points coalesced; Ursillo learned about co-packers, NDAs, and nutritional labels, visited trade shows and seminars, did tastings and demos. At ‘Sam Adams’ Brewing the American Dream’ conference, she found a connection with the story of Sam Adams’ founder, James Koch. “He was going through his great grandfather’s belongings after he passed away,” Ursillo said. “And came across his recipe for beer.” “There are various ways to go about launching a food product,” Ursillo continued. “Especially a family recipe: you

could lease it to someone, you could make it yourself, or you could hire a co-packer, which is essentially a manufacturer. That is the route I decided to take.” After much trial and error, Ursillo chose award-winning Yankee Trader Seafood. Founded by Gerry McAdams in 1994, Yankee Trader is a woman-owned company, run by the founder’s children, CEO Stephanie Hernan and CFO Lisa Heller. “The thing with co-packers,” Ursillo said. “You can’t just hand them a recipe and say make it; they need to extrapolate well. My mother made maybe 48 at a time, and I’m making 1,000 pieces plus. You’ve got to make those 1,000 taste just like the 48 that came out of my mother’s kitchen.” With some sidetracks and surreptitious meetings in between, Ursillo eventually connected with Dave’s owner and then with Director of Perishables, Lou Aragao, who became somewhat of a mentor. In June 2018, Ursillo filled her first order. They’ve since had three in less than a month. Find them in eight of the ten Dave’s locations, excluding the little Dave’s in Smithfield and the Warwick location on West Shore Road. “We kind of want to walk before we run,” Ursillo said about expansion. “We’re extremely fortunate to have found a home [at Dave’s]. They’re a Rhode Island gem.” Grace’s Stuffies are found in the fresh seafood case. Cooked and frozen, they can be re-frozen but should thaw before being cooked at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. I absolutely love fried chicken. So when I saw the story where the nephew of Colonel Sanders revealed the 11 secret herbs and spices that made KFC’s original recipe chicken a worldwide success, I had to try it! I have to say, it may not be exactly like KFC, but it’s darn close! Making the chicken at home means I do have some control over product quality. I can use pastured or organic chicken. I can use clean oil. And I can oven-fry my chicken, meaning I fry it in oil until golden brown, then finish the cooking process in the oven.

Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon white pepper

3 tablespoons paprika

1 1/2 teaspoons thyme

1 tablespoon celery salt

1 1/2 teaspoons basil

1 tablespoon dried mustard 1 tablespoon garlic salt 1 tablespoon ground ginger 2 teaspoons black pepper

1 1/2 teaspoons oregano 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk 1 egg 5 lbs. chicken (your choice) oil, for frying

Directions:

Combine the flour and the “11 herbs and spices” in a bowl. Mix well. In another bowl, whisk together the milk and the egg. Add the chicken pieces to this bowl and let the chicken soak in it for 10 minutes. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Pour a couple of inches of the oil into a pan with high sides and heat it to 340 degrees, using a thermometer. Don’t fill it with too much oil, because oil expands when hot and it could spill over.

Take the chicken pieces and coat them with the seasoning mix one at a time, making sure you coat them well. Carefully place the chicken in the hot oil. Don’t overcrowd the pan...work in small batches. Too much chicken could cause the oil to spill over the top. Fry the chicken pieces just until golden...no need to cook them all the way through. Place the pieces on a baking sheet lined with non-stick aluminum foil. When all the chicken has been fried, place the baking sheet in the oven and cook until the chicken pieces reach an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees.

A NEW CHEF BRINGS NEW CREATIVITY

Newport, Rhode Island is a great old town to explore… and we’re lucky that we live just a half-hour away. But Newport gets ridiculously crowded in the summertime, so we visit before the season starts or wait until the season is over before we even dare to set foot anywhere near its historic waterfront. But when we heard that one of our favorite restaurants, Fluke, hired a new chef, we broke our own rules and made a special trip to check things out. The first change is the name: formerly Fluke Wine Bar & Kitchen…now Fluke Newport. Straight to the point, emphasizing its location: one of the oldest cities in the country, founded in 1639. Their philosophy is simple: the freshest locally caught fish and seafood when possible. Jeff and Geremie Callaghan, owners of Fluke, have been in the biz for a long time, and we’ve been fortunate to know them for over a decade. We met one cold winter night, when my radio station Christmas party, being held at one of the mansions on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, went horribly wrong when they insisted on playing that lame “murder mystery theater” thing in the middle of dinner. My wife and I, being new parents at the time, and cherishing our very rare date night alone, ditched the Christmas party the moment we saw what was going on and made our way quite randomly to the bar on the third floor of Fluke, where Jeff introduced us to many wonderful sipping rums. I consider Jeff my mentor in this area, showing me there was far more to rum than a Captain and Coke. 16 ShopInRI

The bar has changed a little bit at Fluke Newport…where rums used to dominate, now there are bourbons…a sign of the times. But the creative bartenders use top quality spirits and hand-pressed juices in their cocktails. The new chef at Fluke is Eddie Montalvo, a graduate of Johnson & Wales University in Provi- dence. He worked at the highly respected Al Forno in Providence before moving to New York City, where he worked for many years for restaurant legends like David Bouley, Daniel Boulud, Danny Meyer and others. Once Eddie became a family man, and he realized he didn’t want to raise a child in the city, it was obvious that a change of venue was needed, and he left New York for Newport. It’s clear that the move was not only great for him, but for Fluke as well (it was due for an injection of fresh ideas) and even the Fluke owners and staff, who seem re-energized by a talented new chef at the helm.

Eddie came to our table and we talked at length about food and life, and how the two play a crucial role in our existence. We instantly realized this was not only a talented chef, but a nice guy, not something you always find in one person!

He started us off with an appetizer of foie gras Paris-brest. Paris-rest is a popular sweet pastry. They add local strawberry jam and foie gras to make little sandwiches that are sweet and so rich and satisfying. So good as an appetizer, I was already planning to have it again as dessert!

We don’t usually order chicken at a restaurant, but my wife’s local Baffoni farm chicken, cooked in a cast iron pan and served with morels and an artichoke puree, was perfect. Chef Eddie told me he prides himself in his pasta making, so I went with the poached lobster on pillowy-soft spinach angel hair pasta with mushrooms. Both of our selections were delicious, and the plates were beautiful. And I was too stuffed to have another order of the foie gras Paris-brest! Maybe next time…

Next came an experimental plate. Chef Montalvo had some fresh-caught striped bass, and made a beautiful plate that was not yet on the menu. I’m not usually a fan of striped bass, but cutting it super-thin, and serving it crudo-style was brilliant. We told him he shouldn’t change a thing. Perhaps it’s on the menu by now.

Every bit of seafood at Fluke Newport is right off the boat. Produce and meats are from farms just up the road. And now, a chef that excels in putting them together for a fabulous meal.

East Bay residents don’t have to travel very far to find their own version of the famed, iconic landmark, “Cheers” – the friendly pub where everyone knows your name and the food is a home run! When owner Kevin Moran of Bristol took ownership of Lauren’s Restaurant in Warren over two years ago and later became the sole proprietor last year, he knew that sparks were going to fly and that magic was about to happen! It’s no wonder why the eatery has quickly become one of the hottest dining spots in the area. “It’s nothing like I thought it would be and everything I’d hoped it would be,” Moran begins, adding that the busy restaurant is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and features morning specials, classic sandwiches and signature wraps, and an extensive selection of dinner and daily specials. Moran says the name “Lauren’s” was adopted by a previous owner, and realizing that the moniker had been well established, he decided to keep it. “I know most of the people who come in here regularly,” he continues. “It’s a nice environment.” Moran says that his “friendly” staff is what makes the restaurant so welcoming and successful. “You can’t teach someone that,” he continues, describing his employees as “friendly and dependable.” According to the restaurateur, leisurely Saturday and Sunday breakfasts remain popular. He says that there is frequently a “rush” after church on Sundays, and

morning specials are available until 4 p.m. Whether you’re sitting alone at the counter or sharing a hearty breakfast with family or friends, the omelets, egg specials, Belgian waffles, and pancakes are certainly not to be missed. One of the favorites is the Portuguese omelet, a

satisfying meal that features ground chourico, green peppers, onions, and American cheese, with home fries and toast or an English muffin. A bagel or sweet bread can be added at an additional charge. Just add some hot coffee to be set for the day! Other breakfast specialties include eggs benedict, B.Y.O.O. (Build Your Own Omelet), and The Spin-Wich, a delicious treat featuring scrambled eggs with sautéed garlic spinach and provolone cheese. Another dish for those with a “sweet tooth” is the mouth watering Sweet Bread French Toast, a specialty that includes two eggs and toast, with bacon, sausage or ham. For lunch, Lauren’s offers a soup of the day and New England clam chowder, signature wraps, classic sandwiches,

and dinner specials. The Chicken Mediterranean Wrap, served with house made chips or french fries, features grilled chicken, mixed greens, sautéed garlic spinach, Kalmata olive spread, sun dried tomatoes, and feta cheese. Other classic sandwiches include BLTs, tuna melts, burgers, a popular French dip, and a zesty meatball sub that features house served marinara with melted provolone and served on a torpedo roll. Dinner specials include fish and chips, served daily with french fries, tartar sauce, and homemade coleslaw, lasagna, baked or fried scallops, baked haddock, pasta with white or red clam sauce, grilled chicken and broccoli alfredo, shrimp scampi, and a delicious lobster, shrimp, and scallop casserole that comes with a choice of potato and the vegetable of the day. Lauren’s Restaurant also features such hearty fare as chicken pot pie, shepherd’s pie, meatloaf, Chicken Francaise, fried shrimp, liver and onions, and pot roast. “My favorite meal is the House Steak – hands down,” Moran tells, adding that the filet mignon is topped with a special garlic and wine sauce and is served with french fries, rice, and a fried egg. Moran says that another favorite is Chicken Mozambique and the homemade chicken tenders. Lauren’s head chef, Jerry Rodriquez, a native of Mexico, has been working at the restaurant for 10 years. Breakfast chef Ann Bancroft is another important member of the team. “I put the time in every dish I make as if I was making it for myself,” says Rodriquez, adding that he frequently steps out of the kitchen to greet guests.

By Julia Romano Many years ago, there were two types of coffee from which to choose when visiting any given coffee shop in RI-regular or decaf-hot or iced! And, back in the day, it seemed as though only older people drank coffee. It was unusual for the younger generation to have any desire for it. There was also a limited number of coffee shops where adults could choose from for a cup of joe to boost the start of their day. But throughout the past few years, those young and old, seem to have fallen into a coffee obsession-and for some-a little more than just regular or decaf. With all of the emerging coffee chains and the already established local coffee businesses, signature coffees have become all the rage. Next time you are out and about, look around and you will no doubt observe people of all

ages carrying a beverage from any one of the many coffee shops-a beverage that doesn’t resemble what we all know as a hot cup of joe. To keep up with all of the desires of these newly bred coffee fanatics, the original popular coffee chains caught onto the changing coffee hype and have kicked it up several notches. They now offer not only flavored coffees, but other many other options with a twist- to create their own speciality coffee beverages. Starbucks, a nationwide chain, seems to offer the largest variety of flavors and mixtures of espresso drinks, such as lattes, frappuccinos, mochaccinos, cappuccinos, and macchiatos, all in hot and iced selections. Dunkin Donuts, however, is not far behind with their extensive choices of hot and iced flavored coffees, lattes, macchiatos, and flavored frozen coffees, available with flavor shots or flavor swirls. Coffee Connection located in North Providence, Cumberland and Woonsocket, although a smaller business, has a huge variety of concoctions, keeping it in the running as one of the more popular coffee counters. From their standard coffee and espresso cappuccinos, to hot and cold lattes, and hot and iced coffees, with names such as Turtle coffee with caramel and chocolate, Nutella, with chocolate fudge and hazelnut, several types of candy bar flavored coffees, Mint Chocolate Chip & Banana

Split, this local hot spot offers flavors that are as pleasing, if not better then the larger chains. Brewed Awakenings, with locations in Johnston, Cranston, Warwick, and Wakefield, is another smaller chain, but also has a selection that qualifies it as a great coffee contender. With its 14 varieties of hot and iced coffee blends and espresso, any coffee enthusiast will find satisfaction. Marylou’s Coffee is another staple coffee spot with locations throughout RI and Mass. Their coffee is also available in a many different flavors. Some of their specialty choices include Creamy Chocolate, Butterfinger, Twix, Peanut Butter Wonderful, Strawberry Shortcake, Funnybone, and many, many more. Other RI venues that cater to coffee fanatics are Coffee Exchange, White Electric Coffee, Small Point Cafe, Dave’s Coffee, Bolt Coffee, all in Providence, Fuel Coffee Bar in Narragansett, MainStreet Coffee in E. Greenwich, Coffee Depot in Riverside, Coffee Depot in Warren, Coffee Bean Express in Cranston, Java Madness in Wakefield, and so many more across the state. In RI, there is a coffee venue on every corner of every main street, some with lines out the door, especially during the morning rush. But for some, they cannot leave their houses in the morning without drinking their first of many cups of coffee of the day. Knowing this, the coffee industry immediately caught on to the K cup pod trend which has made available quick and easy ways to enjoy either that first cup of Joe. And long ago passed are the days of measuring out just the right amount of coffee grinds to fill a 4 to 12 cup pot. Nowadays, a Keurig coffee maker is the way to go to avoid the coffee pot hassle and to simplify the process. Instead of having to wait at least 20 minutes to savor that first cup (or that fifth cup), the Keurig makes it happen in about 3 minutes flat.

The answer is simple. I have no idea. Some seem to enjoy testing out all of the different options and flavors, or those that follow their the mood for either an iced or hot drink, depending on the time of year. But then there are those who stay loyal to just their one and only, the mixture that they may have created with flavors that satisfy their taste buds, and will not order another kind no matter what else is available. For me, I am in the latter group-sort of. And if you’re wondering what I am loyal to, or what may even be considered my addiction, it’s hot, regular caffeinated coffee with skim milk and Splenda-even in the heat of the hottest summer day. But it’s obvious that I am not a part of the growing coffee rage norm. What I am is one of the remaining few who feels that a real coffee lover is one who always orders just a regular old fashioned cup of hot java, any brew, any blend-no flavor, thank you.

After jumping on the K cup bandwagon, many of the larger coffee shop chains made the smart decision to offer their own K cup pods to satisfy the at-home coffee consumer. You can also go to any area supermarket and find their branded K cup pods alongside Newman’s Own, Green Mountain, The Original Donut Shop, Entenmann’s (thought they only made sweet pastries), as well as some names that sound fancy and exotic, and generic brands that are not familiar at all. Then there are different types of blends, from breakfast blend, mild blend, signature blend (whatever that means), to colombian roast, french roast, italian roast, blonde roast, medium roast, to dark roast, and every other blend and roast in between. BALSAMIC GLAZED CHICKEN Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails

I have chicken at least twice a week... can't get enough of it. So I'm always looking for new recipes. I especially love marinades, because the flavor penetrates the meat, making every bite count. The balsamic used in this recipe is not the fancy, super-expensive vinegar. I use the basic, $9-buck-a-bottle stuff. Ingredients 4 lbs. chicken parts or 1 whole chicken cut up 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons honey 1 1/2 tablespoon mustard (I use Gulden's) 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 2 teaspoons garlic salt 1 teaspoon pepper Extra virgin olive oil

If the breast of the chicken is really large, cut it in half so that it cooks as quickly as the other parts. Put all the chicken pieces in a large Ziploc bag. In a bowl, combine the balsamic vinegar, honey, mustard, rosemary, salt and pepper. Whisk to mix thoroughly. Pour the contents of the bowl into the Ziploc bag, seal tightly, and squish it around to make sure the marinade reaches all surfaces of the chicken. Marinate the chicken for about an hour at room temperature. Preheat the oven to 350. Using an oven-proof pan, heat some olive oil and then place the chicken pieces in the pan. Sear for 2 minutes on one side, then sear for 2 more minutes on the other. Place the pan in the oven and cook for 30 minutes, making sure the chicken has cooked all the way through.

Chicken Marsala Over White Rice Recipe

The quahog is a staple of Rhode Island seafood harvesting, with an annual value of $5.4 million a year, according to the state Department of Environmental Management (DEM). Of the 99.9 million pounds of seafood harvested in Rhode Island, 28.9 million pounds are classified as clams/Northern Quahogs.

Directions: Bring the rice and water to a boil in a saucepan over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the rice is tender, and the liquid has been absorbed, 20 to 25 minutes. Set rice aside. In a large bowl, whisk the flour with salt, black pepper, and oregano. Gently press the chicken breasts into the flour mixture to coat, and shake off the excess flour.

1 cup uncooked white rice 2 cups water 1 cup all-purpose flour salt to taste ground black pepper to taste 1 pinch dried oregano to taste 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken cutlets, pounded to 1/4-inch thickness 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons butter, divided 1 clove garlic, minced 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms salt and ground black pepper to taste 1/2 cup Marsala wine 1/2 cup chicken stock

Heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Arrange the chicken in the skillet and cook until the chicken is no longer pink inside and golden brown outside, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Drain the cooked chicken on a paper towel-lined plate. Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon butter in the same skillet over medium heat while scraping up any brown bits with a spoon. Stir in the garlic; cook and stir until fragrant. Add the mushrooms, and cook and stir until they are tender and have released their liquid, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper, then stir in the Marsala wine and chicken stock. Transfer the chicken back to the skillet, and spoon sauce over chicken pieces. Increase heat to medium-high, and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until the the sauce is thickened, about 5 minutes more. Serve the chicken and sauce over the cooked rice.

A teacher, an artist, a survivor. That is Arous Parker summed up quickly, but there is so much more to her story. Finding herself on this journey every day, touching lives and conquering anything that stands in her way; always moving forward. Let’s start at the beginning. Out of economic necessity, Arous had to learn a trade before immigrating from the ex-Soviet Union. She went to hair school in Armenia and got her license before moving to America. She lived with relatives and furthered her education over the next few years while learning the language and bettering techniques. In 1981, she was working at a small salon in Providence and eight years later she opened her very own salon. For the first 20 years, Arous cut hair wet. A friend had introduced her to the John Sahag Dry Cut technique and in 1998 she went to NYC and spent $400 on a life changing haircut experience. The John Sahag Workshop is located at 425 Madison Avenue in NYC. It started there in the 1980’s and has been a hot spot for celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst and more; and also the 1% of Dry Cut stylists in the country. She became friends with John Sahag and continues to 34 ShopInRI

be one of his lead educators. He passed away 13 years ago, but his spirit lives on through what he has taught the hair styling community and what Arous continues to do through education and love for the people in her life. He would be proud. She also manages the Sahag product line as well and travels to teach at hair shows and conventions. Having a space to educate and transform has been a labor of love and it certainly didn’t come easy. For 14 years, Arous Studio was operating at 850 Main Street in east Greenwich until August 14, 2017, a fire swept through the building leaving it uninhabitable. To most people, this would be a time to panic and feel devastated, but not Arous. She saw this as an opportunity to metamorphosize. The day after the fire, she knew she had to get her salon family working again and she had clients to take care of. Well liked in the community, people wanted to help. Within ten days, she was renting space at Shimmer Salon to continue cutting hair while her new salon was being built. The new salon would

emulate the John Sahag Workshop in NYC and accommodate a 20 person John Sahag Education Academy. Arous worked 15+ hour days, seven days a week for nine months. On May 10, 2018, she welcomed clients to her new space at 575 Main Street East Greenwich. So what exactly is “dry cutting”? The Sahag Dry Cut is more visual; not so much a technique; it’s more artistry. Arous explains that “It’s like graduate level. You have to get your PhD in hair.” She tells her students that it guarantees then 100% client retention. Nobody wears their hair wet, so why cut it wet? The Sahag Dry Cut allows the stylist to create shapes with the natural flow of the hair with the shape of the person’s face and neck line. It’s artistic freedom. Ideas and shapes are endless and it complements the way hair is colored as well. “We follow the way your hair

grows. So I can give you a style where you wash your hair and it dries and THAT is your style. You cannot put a cookie cutter technique to everyone’s hair.” Explains Arous. “It’s a studio, not a salon. A salon is where you find haircutters. A studio is where artists work.” Now with a 3000 square foot studio, she can accommodate more clients, as well as once a month, hold her “Hands On Sahag Dry Cut Academy”. Anyone she teaches that gets hired, starts with the bonus of education. If students went to NYC to learn this technique, it would cost them close to $10,000 for a year. Her employees are always learning and appreciate the environment that they work in. She wants to educate and inspire. Arous studio has eight cutting stations and six coloring stations and room to hire five more artists, so if you are interested, call the studio and send your resume. “Through the chaos and the beauty, we’re creating an environment where people are happy to work in with the bonus of continuous education. We already give great service; my goal is to elevate the environment. You don’t have to go to New York City to be in a certain atmosphere. I want people to come here and feel at home.” With a reputation like hers, people drive hundreds of miles to be styled at Arous Studio. Survival skills have gotten her this far. One of her strongest tools is love. Love for herself, and love for the people in her life. She inspires people to be strong and love themselves. She has survived immigration, building a life and business for herself, a fire, and several surgeries due to cancer. She says “Fire doesn’t scare me. Cancer didn’t scare me. Losing my mother, that scares me. You survive things by surrounding yourself with the right people. Everything can be fixed, but love is love.” “My gift is to give back.” Arous offers private appointments to cancer patients. She will go with them to pick out the right wig, and she will cut and color it for them at no cost.

Hi folks; I hope this article finds you prosperous and in good health, but mostly in good health! Now, before we get down to the business of making you even more beautiful than you already are, I would like to announce that... Okay; are you ready for this month’s column? “Hair” we go!!!!!!!!! Flawless skin, shiny hair, stronger nails – who doesn’t want these things, right? Well, would you believe me if I told you that the key to a blemish and wrinkle-free complexion, a full head of longer, thicker, healthier hair, in addition to nails of steel, are no further than your kitchen; and it all starts with a good breakfast! So, mom was actually right on this one. Breakfast really is the most crucial meal of the day. Studies show that eating within an hour of awakening fuels both the body and the brain, boosting overall energy, keeping us alert and awake, and helping to maintain a healthy metabolism. So, whether you’re the girl or guy struggling to not fall asleep at their desk at 10 am, or the one camping out by the coffee and cookies in the late afternoon for an energy boost, the solution to all of your diet woes and lack of energy may be as simple as eating a good breakfast. Not sure what to eat in the morning? The best breakfast to maximize energy, while keeping you full and satisfied should include a combination of protein and carbohydrates. Try a whole grain cereal with more than five grams of fiber per serving, mixed with low fat Greek yogurt. The whole grain carbohydrates provide energy for immediate use, while the protein in the yogurt will keep you feeling full all morning long. Or, if dairy isn’t your thing, or breakfast at home just doesn’t seem feasible, two pieces of whole wheat toast with almond butter is a great option – and easy to eat, even at your desk. Still looking for something simpler? Almost any work cafeteria or coffee shop will have a selection of fresh fruit, which is a great addition to your morning routine for added vitamins, antioxidants, and a hint of sweetness! Try an apple with almond butter or an on-the-go cereal bar made with whole grain, or even a granola bar. No matter what you choose, starting the day with a good breakfast is essential for both mental and physical health; so find what works for you and stick with it! Keep Hydrated- Aim to drink 48 ounces of water everyday. Water is fantastic for your hair, complexion, etc. Some people complain that drinking a lot of water disrupts their day by constantly sending them to the restroom. But, it’s a small price to pay considering how vital water is to our health, beauty and metabolism.

A Conversation with Designer, Meghan Doyle of Tallulah & Poppy By: Avery Marie.

It took a lot research to find the most appropriate name to represent the brand. I decided on Tallulah because it means to live a fulfilled and abundant life, and Poppy because it means spunky and fun. I felt that both of those meanings truly represent who the Tallulah & Poppy woman is - someone who enjoys life and everything it has to offer, is up for new experiences and adventures, and has fun doing it - someone who really lives life to the fullest! It was very important for the name to reflect who the Tallulah and Poppy woman is because that’s what it’s all about - the T&P woman.

What people or things have influenced the collections you have created? Textiles and fashion history have really influenced the collections I’ve created, as well as style icons such as Bianca Jagger and Audrey Hepburn.

How long have you been designing womenswear and what made you want to be a designer? I have been designing womenswear for as long as I can remember, but as a profession, I would say about eight years, or so. I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was in high school. As a teenager, I was always sketching designs, deconstructing and reconstructing garments, and also took sewing lessons. I absolutely loved deconstructing clothes that I already owned, but didn’t like or wear anymore, and creating them into something new. I did that all through high school and knew I wanted to have my own clothing line someday. Once I started applying to colleges, I made a plan to earn both a business and a fashion design degree because I really felt both were necessary for the foundation of owning and operating a successful clothing brand. Is there a meaning behind the name Tallulah & Poppy? 38 ShopInRI

Do you believe in trends? Or, do you believe that a classic style is better fit for women these days? Personally, I’m not a huge fan of trends - I feel like trends encourage wasteful spending on clothing that is of poor quality and/or is so trend driven the style is irrelevant after a season or two. Even though you could wear the style longer if it hasn’t fallen apart, since it’s a “trend,” consumers are typically “over” that trend and ready for the next. I really believe in investing in timeless styles, made of quality construction and materials, and clothes that are designed to stand the test of time is the way to go. It really is two different ways of shopping: buy a lot of trendy, disposable styles, or buy a few timeless, quality styles. I truly

believe less is more, and in the long run, you’ll end up spending less money buying investment pieces because you won’t have to be restocking a new wardrobe every year or so.

What trend do you hope never comes back into style? Really poofy sleeves!

Where can Tallulah & Poppy be purchased? Once we’ve launched, people can purchase Tallulah & Poppy online, as well as at trunk shows and pop up events. We’re also researching boutiques to potentially partner with as well.

Will you do custom orders? Tallulah & Poppy is a small batch production and preorder clothing line. As of now, we will not be doing custom orders, but maybe down the road!

If you were not a fashion designer, what profession would you have chosen? I think either an interior designer or a therapist - yes, very different! Ha. I have always been into designing spaces and enjoy the challenge of creating a space with both functionality and aesthetics working together. When I was in college, I took a few psychology courses as electives and found them super fascinating - I ended up minoring in psych because I found it so interesting and also thought it would be beneficial in the business world.

Where do you see Tallulah & Poppy in 10 years? It’s so hard to say because I have so many ideas for growth, the future, and things are constantly changing! I would love to eventually have a flagship boutique and maybe open up more shops as well. I’ve also thought about a T&P children’s line. We’ll see - stay tuned!

In December of 2016, Darlene Brien moved her jewelry design company from an industrial park in Smithfield, to a 6,275 square foot mansion in the Quality Hill neighborhood of Pawtucket. The mansion, last known as Grand Manor, sits overlooking the highway at 58 Walcott Street. The mansion was built in 1840 and was known as the Goff-Pitcher House, built by local textile manufacturer, Elias B. Pitcher. Later, in 1922, it was used as the local chapter of the American Red Cross, and later would serve as the Rhode Island Children’s Museum. Pawtucket, after all, is the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and has always had a strong arts community. Brien hopes to bring more creative jobs into the area. Much needed renovations were made to preserve the beauty and authenticity of the Victorian mansion. Inside, you will find much of the original furnishings, complimented by the unique wood floors, stained glass windows, ornate ceilings, and crown moldings. It’s as if the house and the jewelry were existing and thriving on their own until one day, they were united and a perfect match was made. A union of elegance, history, and purpose. Brien, a Woonsocket native, had her degree in psychology from the University Of Rhode Island, but didn’t feel like she was really in touch with the creative side of herself at all. She decided to follow her heart. Nearly 24 years ago, Brien discovered that she enjoyed jewelry design and could make a difference by putting her work out there for women to feel good about themselves. She had spent so much time in the retail fashion industry that she knew she could do so much more on a personal level. The first piece she made 42 ShopInRI

was a sort of mixed media piece using a colorful amulet joined with gold and silver and several layers. She stated,” I’ve always loved that look. A lot of people have a hard time figuring out how to layer correctly and how to wear it and what goes with what lengths.” That piece was presented to the public and was received very well. It was one of the first pieces she made for and sold at Nordstrom.

It’s safe to say, a great deal of Brien’s inspiration comes from older women. Societal norms have changed and fashion models in their 70’s like Maye Musk and Lyn Slater are breaking barriers in the industry. “People are always trying to express their individuality.” Explains Brien. “There is so much out there and I’m trying to do something different where women at any age feel beautiful wearing it. Her 22 year old assis-

tant was wearing a piece that Sara, her fiancé’s 96 year old grandmother was excited to wear!” Sara, a fabulous, eccentric woman is the queen bee. The matriarch. A sassy spitfire if you will. Her favorite sister is Bella. Now, aged 97, and not caring about grey hair and wrinkles, Sara lives by “Be your own beautiful”. Brien takes inspiration from this and has made those words the mantra of Sara Bella Jewelry Design. No one has to be “perfect” to be beautiful. From pouring the molds to create the pieces, to design and assembly, every inch of the mansion is used for creativity. Since moving her business,

Brien feels “When given an opportunity like this, you have to use it for the good of everyone.” She wants to make donations towards Save The Bees, to help and bring awareness to how important bees are and how we will suffer without them. Another type of charity she wants to work with is a charity that helps women with a history of addiction, find jobs after recovery. STAYING FIT THROUGH THE FINAL STRETCH OF SUMMER By: Stacie Venagro 2017 World Miss Fitness America Pro

During the summer there always seems to be some kind of event happening. It’s the perfect time for gathering with family and friends. Cookouts, festivals, beach days, or just hanging by the pool. During this time we tend to eat lots of “party food” burgers, hot dogs, sweets, and other quick foods. Sometimes it’s just too hot to cook! It can be difficult to resist temptation during this time, things just don’t seem to be as regimented in the summer time. I hear the phrase “summer bodies are made in the winter” all of the time, this is a great way for you to think about the summer and plan ahead but does not mean that you should throw your progress away. Anytime is the perfect time to start incorporating healthy foods and exercise. There are plenty of delicious meals that can be made to avoid using a stove and that are cookout friendly. Eating red meat every once in awhile is fine, but eating it regularly can cause issues like heart disease, high cholesterol, and increased cancer risk. Swap out red meat for leaner sources of protein like fish, turkey, chicken, beans, and lean cuts of pork. Turkey burgers and veggie burgers are readily available at almost every supermarket if you don’t want to make your own, just pay attention to the salt content. Cut chicken into small pieces and marinate in a low sodium marinade for as long as possible, grab some delicious veggies and make kabobs on the grill. Pre-make foil packets with a portion of lean protein and veggies to have ready to throw on the grill anytime for a healthy meal. Drain and rinse canned chickpeas and season with your favorite flavors and throw them in the toaster oven for a few minutes for a high protein snack or an addition to your salad. Have a big healthy breakfast so you don’t go out starving. Staying on top of your game doesn’t mean denying yourself the

occasional burger or piece of cake. Moderation and small portions are key, it’s just as important to enjoy yourself. There are so many possibilities, you don’t need to limit yourself. Get a good workout in at least 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes, in addition to staying on track with your nutrition plan. If you’re an outdoors type of person get out early in the morning or later in the day to ensure you don’t get dehydrated or suffer from heat exhaustion. (It happens faster than you think). If the better time for you to get your workout in is peak sun time do it indoors or hit the pool. Exercises in the water are excellent for staying cool and keeping pressure off of bones and joints. Trust me you’ll feel much more confident putting that bathing on after a good workout Water, water, water! Hydrate yourself from the minute you wake up. Add lemons and other fruits to Jazz it up a bit. Herbal teas can be made into delicious iced teas as well. Summer fruits also give lots of hydration, especially melons. Keep alcoholic beverages to a minimum, and when you do have them drink extra water. Enjoy this time with family and friends, don’t get too hung up on weight and appearances. Stick to your plan and it will happen for you!

Losing weight is not always easy, but what’s more difficult, is keeping it off and maintaining a healthy diet without feeling like you are missing out. How does one enjoy eating and drinking, maintain a healthy weight, look fabulous in clothes, and feel great, all at the same time? The key is to learn how to eat healthy and properly. Healthy food can and does taste great. You need to find what you like and learn how to balance and combine foods. Diets are not going to work for the long term. You probably know people who have gained some or all of their weight back after intense dieting, or maybe it has even happened to you at some point, as it is more common than you think. Here are the 3 reasons why most diets fail:

• Diets have a beginning and an end. Diets are not meant to last forever; they normally have a range of time to be followed. Diets are structured for the short term and are not meant to be followed forever. The truth is, they won’t become your eating habits because most diets are meant for the short term and are not healthy. You lose weight because you are shocking your body and probably feeding it a lot less calories, but you will never eat this way long term. Always keep in mind that is better to make healthy changes for long-term results. 48 ShopInRI

Eating plans tend to be restrictive of consuming some food groups (some diets even take them out completely). For a long-term healthy way of eating, diets that eliminate entire food groups, such as carbs or fats, are really not sustainable because your body actually needs these types of nutrients, just in fewer quantities than what you are probably taking in. What would happen if you cut food groups completely out of your diet is that when you have even the sightless slip, your body is not used to them anymore, so it assimilates them slowly and that could end slowing your metabolism.

• Weight is the main focus of diets. Weight is an easy way to measure your progress during a diet, however, it may not be the healthiest. Just because you are losing pounds, doesn’t mean that you are doing it in a healthy way. Well-balanced eating plans will guide you towards a healthier lifestyle and approach to food, and not all diets do this. So, if you are following a diet and start noticing that you have less energy, more fatigue, or even

drowsiness, it is NOT a good sign. It usually means that you are not giving your body the nutrients and vitamins it needs. The best thing you could do is to meet with a nutrition specialist and talk about your goals, so you can both come up with a healthy plan that works long term. The truth and bottom line-everything in moderation is what works best! I know this is such a cliche, but it is so true. The problem in our country is that most food is processed for longer shelf life, but the chemicals used to process the foods are so unhealthy for us, and some even make us more hungry. I recently read about a study conducted using rats. One group of rats ate real food, while the second group ate all low fat and fat free food. What they found was quite shocking. The rats that ate the lower fat and fat free foods gained more weight because the chemicals used as substitution made them more hungry, so they kept eating. With humans, we have a double negative because not only are the chemicals going to make us more hungry, the fact that we feel we are consuming something low fat or fat free makes us think we can eat more. When it comes to meats, the animals are also being fed chemicals to bulk them up, so they have more meat to sell. We

then put those chemicals into our bodies, which not only affects our weight, but I truly believe it can be blamed for so many of the diseases and illnesses we are faced with today. It’s definitely best to buy meats from farms that are organic, with animals that are grass fed. Everything we consume could be healthy if derived from a natural source, such as plants. Even medications are made from plants. Plants are natural and this earth provides everything we need. We just need to stop being so greedy and go back to a natural way of life.

Ever since she was in high school, Sherri Allard had a love of the arts but especially the art of tattooing. For the longest time, she felt like she was her own worst enemy, thinking that the world of tattooing was a “boys club”. It just wasn’t common back then to see women tattoo artists. In 2011, she left The Ocean State and moved to Florida where she attended cosmetology school. Soon after graduation, she found herself working full time as an arch specialist at The Benefit Brow Bar at ULTA. “Makeup and brow waxing; every day all day. After three and a half years, you don’t see your money change because it’s retail.” Sherri explained. “Someone in my town had been a technician with Soft Tap, a company known for their permanent makeup services, for over twenty years. She came

back to Florida from California with her teaching certificate and I was one of the first women she’s trained.” Sherri went through the five weeks of required training and worked on ten different models, learning her trade, and perfecting the art of permanent brows, eyeliner and lip liner on actual people. 9 Interesting Facts About Walt Disney There may be no entertainment industry figure more influential than Disney’s eponymous founder. In his 65 years, Walt Disney succeeded in moving animation from a black-and-white novelty to a highly respected genre that would produce Oscar-worrthy feature films. More than a few of his creations — including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy — are instantly recognizable global icons. And the small animation house he founded on October 16, 1923 is now valued at more than $42 billion. Yet, despite his fame, Disney remains a relatively unknown figure. His story is overshadowed by his achievements, and, sometimes, by outright myth. In honor of The Walt Disney Company’s 90th anniversary, here are ten things you probably didn’t know about the man behind Mickey Mouse. 1. He dropped out of high school to join the army During the first World War, a 16-year-old Walt Disney left school and attempted to enlist in the army. He was rejected for being underage, but managed to find employment with the Red Cross as an ambulance driver. The organization sent Disney to France for a year, but by the time he arrived, the armistice agreement had already been signed. 2. Mickey Mouse’s original name was “Mortimer” Mickey Mouse is virtually synonymous with Disney’s company, but if the animator’s wife hadn’t intervened, he might have been represented by Mortimer Mouse instead. In the mouse’s first few shorts, he was referred to as Mortimer Mouse, but Lillian Disney managed to convince her husband that Mickey would be a more marketable name. Mortimer later became Mickey’s Brooklyn-accented rival, vying for Minnie Mouse’s affection. 3. He was the original voice behind Mickey Mouse While mostly known for his skills as an animator, director and producer (not to mention his business acumen), Disney also tried his hand at voice acting. From Mickey’s inception in 1928, all the way to 1947, the mouse’s voice was provided by Disney before being turned over to English voice actor Jimmy MacDonald. Disney loved the character so much that he returned to the studio in 1955 to voice Mickey Mouse shorts for his company’s television show The Mickey Mouse Club. 4. He was determined to produce a feature-length animated movie, even when everyone thought the idea was crazy When word got out that Disney planned to turn Snow White into a feature film, industry insiders were convinced his efforts would fail, calling the project “Disney’s Folly.”

His detractors were almost correct. Disney did in fact run out of funding during Snow White‘s production, and was forced to show loan officers a rough cut of the movie before he could secure additional financing. Luckily for both Disney and his creditors, Snow White turned out to be a smashing success. The film earned over $8 million during it’s initial release — about $130 million today. 7. He came close to building a major ski resort After opening Disney Land in 1955, Walt set his sights on a ski resort in Mineral King Valley, near California’s Sequoia National Park. The plan was to build a vacation spot featuring six ski areas, all centered around a Swiss-style base village, with a total daily capacity of 20,000 skiers. The project came relatively close to development, with Disney winning approval from the Forest Service and forging a roads deal with the Governor of California. However, after Disney’s death in 1966, the company felt it could only handle one major project at a time. Wisely, they chose to complete Disney World instead. 8. He received more Academy Awards and nominations than any other person in history Between 1932 and 1969, Disney won 22 Academy Awards and was nominated 59 times. Included amongst this trove of Oscars are three awards created specifically for him — one for creating Mickey Mouse, another recognizing his contribution of music in the field of animation, and a specially made prize honoring Snow White and the Seven Dwarves that featured a traditional statuette, and seven miniature versions alongside of it. 9. After his death, he was NOT cryogenically frozen One fact that everyone thinks they know about Walt Disney is that his body has been preserved through cryogenics. However, as Snopes long ago revealed, there is no truth to this urban legend. NEW ANCHOR ADVANTAGE PROGRAM HELPS FIRST-TIME AND PUBLIC SERVICE HOME BUYERS By Mark Berger Springtime means homeowners are either seeking a new home or selling one. One difficult aspect regarding the process can often be simply qualifying for a mortgage. Although there are several federally funded options, not all of them cater to certain members of the population— until now. The Anchor Advantage Program enables first-time, military, educators, public safety workers and other eligible professions receive a 2% completely forgivable grant toward their down payment. Perhaps the best part of the program for applicants would not be saddled with reselling or borrower repayment restrictions, as the grant is completely forgiven right after the closing, according to Anchor Financial Mortgage, Inc. seen a program like this one,” said Baptista, whose office is located in Pawtucket and serves all of New England, New York, and Florida. “Most purchase programs require at least a 3.5% down payment and credit score of 620. With this program, applicants receive a 2% forgivable grant, and we can lend on credit scores as low as 580. The program offers the flexibility that today’s homebuyers need with qualifying scores as low as 580 and forgivable grant for a down payment, not just another loan.” The Advantage Program also applies to properties that need improvements with a 203K Rehabilitation Loan. This program will finance the purchase price as well as the cost of the improvements, Baptista said. “With so many properties on the market today, having deferred maintenance issues or just in need of some minor or major updating, this program will get it all done in one loan. We have a ton of experience with 203K rehab financing, many banks shy away from these loans but we consider them to be one of our specialties.” Baptista added that there are many strategies for potential buyers to use in order to help them purchase their first (or next) home. He said the biggest piece of advice he gives to clients is to get approval for a mortgage. Doing that will show prospective buyers that there is a legitimate interest for that property and not just lip service, he noted. “Potential buyers want to get pre-approved,” he said. “You want to show any seller that you’ve done your homework, you’re doing your due diligence so you can get pre-approved. We can take customers through the pre-approval process to the approval process. Rather, Ball and her staff create a plan to address those problems. Since the spring, several pro bono projects have been completed. These jobs ranged from fixing doors, removing trash, and prepping and painting walls, to repairing leaky roofs and building wheelchair ramps. Ball believes that giving back to the community is the perfect way to establish goodwill. “We live in this community, and I feel that if we lend a hand to help—whether it’s because someone lacks the time or the financial resources— we can take the pressure off of those in need of our help,” said Ball, who also serves as broker/owner of Finest Real Estate and Property Management in Woonsocket.

Common Misconceptions About Lyme Disease In Dogs There is no need to panic and you do not need to run to your vet if you find a tick on your dog. Lyme disease primarily comes from deer tick, but not all deer tick are infected with the Lyme disease bacteria.

Lyme disease is a very common infectious disease in the northeastern United States. It is also a very controversial topic amongst veterinarians because most dogs that test positive are not clinically ill. This makes it difficult to determine which dogs should be treated. I hope to clear up some common misconceptions about dogs and this disease. After much research, I learned that Lyme disease is caused by the Spirochete bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi. The disease is transmitted to dogs by the nymph and adult stages of the black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis, commonly referred to as the deer tick. Does every dog that tests positive need to be treated? The answer to this will vary from dog to dog and remains somewhat of a debate. Only about 10% of dogs that test positive will ever develop clinical illness from infection with the Lyme organism, so many veterinarians argue that treatment is not necessary for seemingly healthy dogs. If your dog tests positive on a screening test, you should discuss further treatment with your veterinarian. The most common symptoms of Lyme disease in your pet are lameness, fever, lethargy, and enlarged lymph nodes. The majority of dogs respond very well to antibiotic treatment with Doxycycline or Amoxicillin. 78 ShopInRI

The best way to effectively remove a tick is to use tweezers to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible. The tick should then be removed by it pulling straight out. Do not twist or crush the tick as you are removing it. For Lyme disease to be contracted, the tick must be one that is infected with Lyme disease and must be attached to your dog for at least 48 hours. Therefore, the best means of avoiding Lyme disease is to remove ticks as soon as they are found. I recommend daily inspections of your dog. In addition to “tick checks,” I also recommend preventative topical parasiticides such as Frontline, Advantage, or Advantix. In our area of the country, ticks are most active from March to mid-May and from midAugust to November, and both nymphs and adults can transmit Lyme disease. However, ticks can be active any time the temperature is above freezing, so do not let your guard down in the winter months. If there is snow cover, there won’t be much, if any tick activity, but if we have several warm winter days in a row, ticks may become active. There are several canine vaccines available to prevent Lyme disease. The need for this vaccine should be determined on a case by case basis following a discussion with your veterinarian. I recommend that all dogs be tested for Lyme disease before considering a vaccine.

Jurassic world fallen kingdom Movie Review By: Hannah Burke 3 years ago we were given the new and improved Jurassic Park movie, Jurassic World. It brought back our favorite memories from the original that first met theatres in the summer of 1993. Now we have the sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The movie starts on the abandoned Isla Nublar where a group of scientists is collecting DNA samples from the now very dead and decayed Indominus Rex. They manage to successfully get a sample, however they barely escape attacks from the T-Rex and the Mosasaurus, who manages to escape into the ocean. We are then taken to the mainland where we see Claire, (Bryce Dallas Howard) leading the Dinosaur Protection Group. They are trying to save the remaining dinosaurs on the island that is soon to explode. A hearing is held at the US Senate where Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) tells the world that the dinosaurs should be left to die. This upsets Claire, but coincidentally she receives a call from John Hammond’s (Richard Attenborough) partner, Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell). She goes to meet him and Eli Mills (Rafe Spall) who tells her that he can send people to the island to rescue the dinosaurs, but only a select few including Blue the Velociraptor, who is the last of her kind. Claire is overjoyed, and decides to recruit Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) to help get Blue back. At first he ignores her request but when she arrives on the plane the next morning with her two work partners Zia (Daniella Pineda) and Franklin (Justice Smith), he is on the plane with them. They soon arrive on the island where they meet mercenary Ken Wheatley (Ted Levine). Zia is overwhelmed by the true beauty of the dinosaurs, but she does not know that it will all change. Franklin and Claire split from the group to enable the tracking system because without it, the team cannot find Blue. Meanwhile Owen, Zia, Ken, and his crew set out to find Blue. Franklin manages to get the tracking system online and Owen finds Blue, but the mercenaries shoot Blue and Owen is tranquilized. Meanwhile, Franklin and Claire are trapped in a bunker with flowing lava and an angry Baryonyx. The volcano explodes and in some way Franklin, Owen, and Claire make it to the ship with the dinos. The dinosaurs are taken away from the island, and Zia is forced to transfuse Blue’s blood with the T-Rex’s to save her life. That is when the small group starts to realize that the men on the island had different purposes for the dinosaurs, bringing them to not only a fight for their lives, but for the dinosaurs too. 80 ShopInRI

Overall I liked the movie. Most people assume that when a sequel comes out it is going to be worse than the first, but I think this was a good continuation of the series. Of course there is always classic dinosaurs chasing people and evil people using good people to get what they want, but it is presented in a different way in this movie. In the first movie they had created the Indominus Rex, and its intelligence in the movie was something that set the plot off its hinges, as it was not just slash and bite, but slash and bite with a purpose. However, the Indoraptor blew the Indominus out of the water. Some moments had me wanting to get up and scream because an animal with that much intelligence should not be allowed to exist. The intelligence that it is given in the movie is truly terrifying, and the mere thought of it being something that could be on my front lawn or trying to open my window makes me shudder. Not to mention when it faked being tranquilized to free itself from the cage. And did I mention that it can open windows? I also liked the characters quite a bit. Zia and Franklin were very ying and yang in the story, with Zia being snappy and sassy and Franklin being an all-around worry wart. Maisie is also a great personality in the movie. The actor that plays her is amazing at bringing her to life, and Maisie’s character plays an important role in the movie. Owen and Claire’s relationship grows much more in this movie, as they start to finally accept each other for who they are. I give Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom a 4.5 out of 6 diamonds. Rated PG-13 for blood and violence.

One of the most popular excursions of the Azores is whale and dolphin watching; this part of Portugal is both a stopover and a home to about a third of the world’s sperm whales, common dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins. Tours are also available for those seeking sight of other species, including blue whales, the largest known animal in the history of the planet, as they pass through this area on migration routes. There are also yellowmouth barracuda to devil rays, and loggerhead turtles to slipper lobsters that arise from the extraordinary range of habitats. Wrasse, damsel fish, and moray eels make their home in the coast’s jade-green bay. Marlin, tuna, and sharks swim around the peaks of barely submerged volcanoes; jacks, bonitos and grouper swirl around the walls of underwater cliffs; more delicate life forms find shelter in caves formed from lava tubes; and countless other species take up residence in the shipwrecks crowding the seafloor. Another favorite sea activity of the Azores is diving, as this part of the Atlantic is known as the area’s best of the best in diving locations. The Azores’ mild weather, warm water, and many coastlines make it a year-round destination for watersports. The attractions for sailors are incredibly satisfying and the Azorean harbors host a calendar of regattas and marina events.

The desirable weather conditions also make for fabulous windsurfing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, and other water driven activities, while those seeking something more peaceful and restful can always take a dip in one of the swimming holes that are formed by cooled lava flowing into the sea-an awesome adventure. Away from the water there are just as many fun and exciting adventures-in Sao Miguel, Terceira, and Faial there is horseback riding, eco-friendly mountain biking, and a paragliding festival that has been a tradition for the past 20 years, with takeoffs from rims of Sao Miguel’s craters-a starting point of lifts that will enable you to fully appreciate the unbelievable landscape from above. Another extraordinary outdoor expedition is hiking Mt Pico, Portugal’s highest mountain at 7,713 feet. This three-hour climb will allow you to watch the amazing sunrises or sunsets for a premier hiking experience. São Jorge is another hiker’s dream that will remain in your

visual mind for years to come. For long lasting memories, take advantage of Terceira and Faial’s emerald beaches, dazzling blue lakes, lush green pastures, volcanic caverns, bubbling mud pots, and sprawling waterfalls cascading deep into ravines. There are also many craters and cones; cave systems, rock formations, hot springs, and further mysteries to explore. In recent years, it has become much easier travelling from island to island as the Azores’ region of Portugal has lifted its restrictions on air routes, enabling additional carriers with better fares and making it more affordable for those wanting to take advantage of the full Azores’ experience. In 2017, Quality Coast, a European Commission-supported certification program awarded the Azores “the world’s top destination for sustainable tourism,” and is the only place in the world ever awarded the Platinum Award-the organization’s highest honor.
