SHRIMP SCAMPI ON STEROIDS

I love shrimp scampi, and had the need to satisfy my cravings the other day. But what started as a simple scampi recipe, turned into something a bit more. I may never make scampi the same way again!

Ingredients: 1 lb. wild-caught American shrimp, peeled and de-veined 4 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons parsley 1 teaspoon garlic salt 1 teaspoon oregano 1/2 teaspoon granulated onion 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 3 tablespoons Spirgučiai (see below) 1/2 lb. fresh mozzarella, sliced oregano, for sprinkling Thaw the shrimp under cold water. Place in a colander to drain. Spirgučiai is a Lithuanian favorite: chopped bacon and onions, fried until crisp and usually sprinkled over anything and everything in Lithuanian cooking. I always have some in my fridge, already prepared and just waiting to be used. In a saucepan on medium heat, combine the butter, olive oil, parsley, garlic salt, oregano, onion, pepper and Spirgučiai. Heat only until everything melts and combines. Don’t let it burn. (If you don’t have Spirgučiai, all you need to do is take a couple of slices of bacon, chop them up, and fry them in a pan until crisp. Keep the bacon and the fat in the pan and then add the butter, olive oil, parsley, garlic salt, oregano, onion and pepper.) In a small sheet pan lined with foil, lay the shrimp in a single layer and cook them halfway in a pre-heated 400-degree oven to remove the moisture from the shrimp. Take the pan out of the oven, and drain off the moisture, if any. Pour the butter mix from the saucepan all over the shrimp and toss to coat. Return the shrimp to the oven for a few minutes, until they’ve heated through and are almost completely cooked. (Careful: never over-cook shrimp!) Take the pan out of the oven, and place pieces of mozzarella on top, garnishing with a little oregano. Set the oven on broil and cook until the cheese has melted. Slice with a spatula and serve on top of pasta, making sure you get some of that buttery scampi sauce. Shop In RI 9

Working Our Way Back to Normalcy: How Reopening has Affected the Industry By Dale J. Venturini, President/CEO, Rhode Island Hospitality Association

Just a few short months ago, industry workers, operators, and stakeholders were jumping for joy when Rhode Island’s governor, Daniel McKee, announced the full reopening of the state’s economy with little-to-no COVID-19 restrictions. Masks were taken off and restaurants, bars, hotels, and other businesses were permitted to return to full capacity. Since then, things have been as close to “normal” as they have been in the last year and a half, yet many of our industry’s businesses are still suffering. From the ongoing worker shortage to supply chain issues and rising prices, the rapid spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant, especially among unvaccinated individuals, and the unpopular allocation of the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) “Restaurant Revitalization Fund” to businesses across Rhode Island, what was meant to be the end of the darkest chapter in our industry’s history has quickly become a stressful continuation of what we have been facing for the last 19 months. With regard to the “Restaurant Revitalization Fund,” there has been nothing but confusion since

the program was first introduced. In my 33 years at the Rhode Island Hospitality Association (RIHA), I have never seen such divisiveness within the industry. While competition is natural, it has quickly evolved into combativeness and that has had a truly negative impact on something our industry prides itself on - a strong culture of community. Truthfully, we have not gotten a sense as to why some businesses received money and why others did not, nor do we know how or why the SBA determined how much money to give the businesses that did receive funding. What we do know is that our restaurants need support from the government to recover this year and to stay in business going forward. While we do not have any answers at the moment, we are working with a variety of partners on legislation that would make more funding available, but we need time to formulate that plan and execute it. As COVID-19 cases start to increase again, this time as a result of the Delta variant’s spread, many of our industry’s workers and its customers are concerned about the lack of clear direction and mitigation. Restaurants, hotels, and other industry businesses are in a position of making judgment calls on reinstating mask mandates and reintroducing physical distancing to protect themselves, their employees, and their consumers. Obviously, businesses are stuck between a rock and a hard place – scaling back their operations by reintroducing capacity limits hurts their bottom lines, and once again making masks mandatory might alienate customers and employees, which few businesses can afford to lose right now, who prefer the comfort of an uncovered face. Throughout the pandemic, Rhode Island’s hospitality industry has been the target of strict oversight and a revolving door of restrictions, yet our operators and employees have responded with grace and understanding each step of the way. As we approach year two of the pandemic, we are exhausted and disappointed, and rather than using our energy to focus on the real threat, which is the virus and its new variants, we are beginning to turn on one another. As one of the leading voices in our industry, I will continue to advocate for change, relief, and guidance, but I, and the team at RIHA alone, cannot make everything better. It is up to each of us, top-to-bottom, to be civil and compassionate, and to do our part to help end this nightmare…our industry depends on it.

A Grand Opening for Premier Nutrition in North Providence! By Mark Berger Photos By: Guillermo Garcia Dave Piatek and Johnna Pitochelli wanted to expand their nutritionbased business. They were already successful in their initial efforts at The Nutrition Station, located on 935 Park Ave. in Cranston, and believed that in a fast-paced world, more people are becoming interested in healthier meal options. There was one problem, however: opening a new Nutrition Club during a worldwide pandemic. Both Piatek and Pitochelli weighed the pros and cons of making that type of move. Would these small mom-and-pop facilities continue to survive? Ultimately, the duo decided to embark on a second location, this time in North Providence. Premier Nutrition, located on 1375 Mineral Spring Ave., offers popular favorites, as well as new concoctions. Both locations serve energizing calorie-burning teas, delicious meal replacement smoothies that are low-cal, low-carb and high in protein. Additionally, both locations serve snacks such as protein balls, bars, and muffins. They are always working on developing new products to keep good nutrition exciting. So, why North Providence?

“Johnna grew up in town and graduated from North Providence High School and was looking forward to bringing the dream to her hometown,” Piatek explained. “The location is conveniently located next to Route 146 and can provide a healthy alternative for the many businesses and residents in the area. Local residents know our building as Monticello’s. It’s a great location with a lot of traffic on Mineral Spring Avenue.” Pitochelli said the difference between the two locations is its vibe. She said the idea for Premier Nutrition is to offer customers a place to escape the hustle and bustle of life. People are intrigued by the warm atmosphere when they enter the store. Added Pitochelli, “We are all about bringing people together in a friendly environment. We also offer tips and drink suggestions for those

coming in for the first time. We want our customers to feel comfortable here and tell others about us.” They opened their new location on May 5 to rave reviews. Their two most popular smoothie selections include the Peanut M&M Sundae that they said people have been “going bonkers” over and their newest, Cinnamon Toast Crunch Smoothie. Also, their power teas are not only delicious, but metabolism-boosting to provide a healthy boost of energy for the drinkers. The couple said they enjoy experimenting with other flavors and seeing their customers’ responses. The look of awe on customers’ faces after their initial sip is what is most rewarding to everyone working at these locations. The last year-plus brought forth several challenges that the pair needed to overcome to continue being successful. They needed to maintain the Cranston location by ensuring staff didn’t lose their jobs, set up sanitation outlets, put up dividers and implement other protocols to keep everyone safe. They did everything they possibly could to remain open during COVID-19 restrictions. Even so, it wasn’t easy, at times. “This was something we struggled with for 18 months, Pitochelli said. “In the end, we remained open and our employees were not impacted as much as they could have been.” The couple is proud to have passed all State and Department of Health inspections with perfect scores. Their commitment to safety was definitely noticed by their customers. The couple said that their expansion plans are not over. They are hoping to have several additional locations when they are done. “These places are very special to us. We have created a positive environment where people can come and develop relationships with others,” Pitochelli said. Zahan Akbar graduated from URI’s College of Pharmacy in 2015. He is from a long line of family members who own independent pharmacies in Maryland and New York and who laid the foundation for what would become his own important work. In addition to this family legacy, Akbar is also married to a Yaleeducated clinical pharmacist, his wife, Hania. This is a family commitment at every level, both personal and professional. Following his graduation from URI, Akbar left Rhode Island and worked for five years as a manager of two CVS pharmacies in Connecticut. While in these capacities, he filled thousands of prescriptions but when he left this well-known retail chain, he may have felt more learned, but he definitely felt less connected to his profession ~ and to his customers. Exercise can do all of the following: Prevent depression and stress Lower blood pressure and lower the odds of having heart problems Make you feel good physically and mentally Reduce the brain fog that comes with age And much more…. I have always preached, exercise is not about losing weight. It is a fringe benefit. There’s so much more. Exercise can be defined and done in so many different ways. We all know that exercise comes from walking, jogging, running, swimming, hiking, taking a cardio class, lifting weights, etc., but what really happens to our body when we exercise? The most recent research shows that the exercise we do to improve our body also helps our brain! When we do high intensity exercise, our heart rate increases, supplying more blood flow to the brain. The increased heart rate also increases our 34 Shop In RI

breathing, making us breathe harder and faster. As a result, more oxygen is supplied to our blood stream and more oxygen reaches our brain. This leads to neurogenesis, which is the production of neurons. This is very personal to me because I suffered a TBI, Traumatic Brain Injury, and being a fitness instructor, I learned a lot about the connection between physical exercise and the brain. Research has indicated that physical exercise increases neurogenesis in the hippocampus, the area of the brain that is important for learning and memory. Additionally, exercise also influences the neurotrophins; it’s the protein that aids in neuron survival, development, and function. This all results in improved learning and memory. Regular physical activity lowers the risk of developing cognitive impairment, such as dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. This benefit from exercise is for people with normal and also impaired cognitive health, including people with ADHD, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke. Furthermore, exercise also releases the secretion of dopamine and serotonin, which are linked with

treating depression. Indirectly, exercise can improve mood and sleep and can also reduce stress and anxiety. Even with all of this knowledge, most people are not doing the required amount of exercise. How to start. Choose a workout that you enjoy. You don’t have to go to the gym and sweat it out, it could be any place or form that you find enjoyable, such as those listed above. Doing something you enjoy will change your attitude towards exercise. It shouldn’t be a chore. It should be a priority you do everyday. No matter how much you enjoy your workout, if you keep doing the same thing over and over again, you will likely lose interest. Keep trying different activities. Change the scenery; instead of always going to the gym, go outdoors. Exercise with a friend. It can and will be fun. Usually when people start exercising, they go overboard on their first few days. It puts lots of stress on the body and mentally you will burn out. Start slow. It’s much better to start with 15-20 minutes, taking it nice and slow, and gradually increasing. Making the body adjust to it so that it feels good and grows organically as your lifestyle. Set out a plan for your workout. Don’t just go and do what everybody is doing. Focus on your own body and listen to it. You can focus on one muscle group at a time and if possible, you could take the help of a trainer who will guide you on your fitness journey. Having a workout buddy also makes you accountable to each other and will help you stick to the routine. Set a goal. Setting a goal will keep you motivated and will encourage you to keep going. Saying that you want to tone your body is not a very clear goal. However, if you say you want to be strong enough to lift a particular weight or fit enough to run a marathon, the goal is much more clear. You can also set a timeframe in which you want to achieve that goal. When I started running, I went to a ¼ mile track and would add a lap every night until I reached three miles. Then I ran daily, building on the mileage until I was able to run my first marathon. Now, your goal does not have to be a marathon, but just reaching three miles was a great accomplishment, as I was never a runner. This following advice might sound strange, but it’s true. Buy workout clothes you feel comfortable and confident in. When you feel good physically, you feel great mentally, and trust me, your workout will be better. Focus on the frequency of workouts and not about the workout being perfect. On those dull days when you think that you cannot really do much, are the days that you should definitely go and workout. Studies have shown that exercise acts as a mood enhancer. Even if it’s a short walk, do something. You WILL feel better. When you think you

can’t, you can! Enjoy your workouts. Move more, sit less. Move as much as you can. Exercise will not only improve your brain and body, but your life will be much happier! Shop In RI 35

Jenn Dower is the co-host of Doug and Jenn in the Mornings on Coast 93.3, which is currently NOW 93.3, and midday host of 95 HJY. Read about a day in the life of this powerhouse radio host and how she juggles everything from work, kids, and her early morning schedule.

4:00 AM - The ALARM. Yes, really…4:00 AM. This is a better option now that I’m working from home. Prior to the pandemic, my alarm went off at 3:45. So I have a true “snooze” feature on my life right now. I’ll take every extra minute I can get! I’m an “up and running” type of gal so this is truly the start to my day. I’ll clean up, chug a water and a kombucha, and head outside into the creepy early hours of the morning with my dog, Hooper. He chases scary noises in the woods, and I wish I knew how to shoot a gun or have better aim with a rock.

4:30 AM - I start research for the show…Doug & Jenn on Coast 93.3. This generally consists of gorging myself on every bit of news and information I can get from multiple news sources, our “morning prep” services (yes…there are companies that exist for that), Apple News, and social media. 5:10 AM - Start the show. Me and Doug are usually trying to lay out our game plan for the day at this point. The news cycles are so fast these days that something we planned to talk about the previous night has already had its turn. With our show, there are a LOT of last-minute changes. And that’s OK! It keeps us on our toes. One of my favorite aspects we have been working on with the show is interaction on social media. We’ll pose a question such as “What’s an absolute Deal-Breaker on a date?” for instance, and get a ton of responses! It’s great to see how differently people can feel about a subject. Reading the responses are great on so many levels. Many times, it helps me be a little less judgmental in my own life! And that’s a “win” for sure!

7:30 AM - The KIDS! Yeah…they’re here. It can be tough. It can interrupt the show. But many times, it’s a way to connect 38 Shop In RI

with other people who are doing the exact same thing at home…trying to get some work done and wrangle the kids (and the dog). So, I’m doing what you’re doing, running around in between songs and making breakfast, and then running back into my little makeshift studio.

10:00 AM - the show ends for the day. I host another show on 94HJY until 3:00 PM. This is a rock format with a totally different listenership than Coast. It allows me to play around with stories and conversations that I may not want to discuss with our Coast listeners. 11:00 AM - Lunch? Maybe. Or 2nd breakfast. I’ve eaten twice by the time you’re wrapping up a mid-morning snack. 3:00 PM - My midday show on 94HJY is done. I try to do some form of exercise for 30 minutes. A Peloton ride, throwing some weights around, going for a walk, a swim…whatever gets the blood flowing because this is when my body starts to shut down. 4:00 PM - this is generally play time/homework/HooperPalooza. We all try to get stuff done before dinner (which we eat early because I’m a Hangry Beast!). It’s also time that we get to spend with the dog, and boy are my kids attached! 5:00 PM - Dinner! I’m freaking starving! Eleven hours into my day and if I don’t get food in my belly, someone’s going to pay. Just kidding. I snack on nuts and fruit all day. Dinner choices have gotten really stale around here. During the summer, if it can’t be cooked outside on the grill or assembled in a quick fashion (watermelon & tomato salad is a current favorite) we aren’t eating. I do avoid ordering out, mostly because my kids are so picky it’s like lighting my wallet on fire. But once a week, I let them get pizza and they don’t let me forget about it…ever! 7:00 PM - This is when I’m spent. Dishes are getting done, lunches are being packed for the next day & I’m scrolling through stories (Reddit & Buzzfeed have a lot of great conversation starters) for tomorrow. Doug’s good at sending me stuff throughout the day, but this is usually when I can hunker down and look through stuff. 8:30 PM - Bedtime? Ha! Have you ever tried to wrestle 2 kids into bed? “I forgot my water,” “I have to pee,” “I want to play with my toys” …. You know the drill. 9:00 PM - For REAL-Bedtime. Five Tips for Transitioning Into Retirement By Edward Pontarelli Jr.

The benefits of open communication are three-fold: it reassures your kids that you’re financially prepared; allows you to introduce or remind your family of your estate and legacy plans; and it establishes a safe space for both sides to discuss potentially challenging financial topics.

3. Maintain healthy habits. Staying diligent with the activities that help you feel your best is important as you shift into retirement. Prioritize eating healthy, sleeping well, staying fit, and maintaining friendships in your new routine.

4. Evaluate your finances.

Retirement marks the end of a chapter in your career and the start of a new lifestyle. This unique transition can bring a myriad of emotions, most commonly ones of excitement and apprehension. If you’re pondering retiring in the next year or so, here are five tips to help you transition smoothly.

1. Know that the transition could take weeks – or months. You likely spent decades forming a routine around your work schedule. Establishing your new normal of volunteer work, an encore career or helping family will take time. If you are married, remember that your retired status may affect your spouse’s routine, too. Talk openly about how you’re feeling during the transition to keep your spouse in the loop.

2.Communicate your retirement plans with family members. Your parents, kids, or other family members will likely be interested in how you intend to spend your retirement days. Will you be visiting the grandkids more often? Continuing to host family get-togethers? Planning to move or purchase a retirement home? As you share your plans, don’t forget to discuss your financial picture.

Prior to retirement, you likely outlined how you will manage your cash flow. (If not, today is the day to put a plan in place.) As you enter retirement, review your expenses to ensure they’re aligned with your plan. It’s common to revise your spending and activities after experiencing the first few weeks away from your primary job so it’s okay if you need to adjust how much you withdraw from your accounts each month. If you want to increase your spending, calculate what that means for your later retirement years, as you don’t want your savings to come up short. Consult a financial advisor for guidance on how to make your money last while living the lifestyle you desire.

5. Reset your attitude. Retirement is not the ultimate finish line. Experiencing a lot of emotions is common but try to focus on what you’re excited about in this next chapter. The Financial Side of Being a Caregiver By: Carrie McPherson One in five Americans is currently an unpaid caregiver, and as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, that number is on the rise. Caring for a family member can be complex. While deeply meaningful and rewarding, it can also present challenges, both emotionally and financially. If you may need to step into a caregiving role for an aging loved one or a family member with disabilities, it’s a good idea to plan a financial strategy today, before it becomes an added stressor. Here are some questions to help you get started: What do you know about your loved one’s financial situation? Knowing the particulars of your loved one’s disability, life and health insurance policies, savings, and financial obligations, can make it easier to step in on a moment’s notice. Obtain contact information for the financial professionals your loved one works with so you know who to go to if you have questions. 1 What is your strategy to pay caregiving expenses? First, think about what bills and expenses your loved one is currently paying that you may need to make on his or her behalf. Encourage your loved one to set up automatic bill pay or to add you as a second signer on a bank account to make handling expenses easier. Next, consider what expenses you may incur as a result of your caregiving role, such as outof-pocket medical care or home improvements needed to accommodate your loved one.

What is the financial impact if you need to take time off from work? If you are employed, you may be covered by the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). With this federally mandated program, eligible employees can take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for an immediate family member while health benefits continue. Some companies allow employees to stockpile sick days and vacation days; if you can use this kind of accrued time off, you’ll still get paid. Liquid savings of your own can help to cover your expenses if you need to take unpaid leave from work. Are your loved one’s assets legally protected? Being proactive from a legal standpoint can help ensure your loved one’s wishes are known and assets are protected during a prolonged illness. Interior Peeling Paint My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting(www. LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@ LopcoContracting.com or call 401270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column! While it is certainly not unusual to see peeling paint on the exterior of someone’s home, it is a bit less common to see peeling on the interior of the home. It would even be safe to say that seeing peeling paint on the exterior of a home is eventually an expected sight at some point during an exterior paint job’s life cycle, not so much on the interior. Now there are those rare phenomena that can make sense for peeling interior paint to be present. Examples would be when old, calcimine-influenced ceiling coatings will not allow paint to properly adhere or when there is a leak somewhere within a home’s structure that subsequently causes paint coatings to peel. But what about in newer homes, where paint is seen to be peeling on the interior for seemingly no reason whatsoever; why does this happen?? Peeling interior paint can occur for a variety of reasons. One such reason, and perhaps the most obvious, is if the correct bonding primer was not used when the walls were originally painted. Another reason could be if the surface that was being painted may have had an elevated moisture or humidity level at the time it was painted. This is a tricky one because even if a moisture meter (a tool used to measure the moisture content of a surface its prongs are “plugged” into) is utilized prior to preparing a surface for painting, its measuring needles may not be able to penetrate deep enough to where moisture may be lurking within the surface that is being painted. As this moisture gradually works its way out, it can cause the paint coating to come off with it. This type of situation can occur in basements or areas that are prone to being particularly damp. It can also happen when surfaces are painted during times of the year when there is naturally more humidity in the air (i.e., summer). Still another reason for interior paint peeling is if there happened to be some type of foreign residue – often invisible to the naked eye – sitting on or within the surface when painting takes place. 50 Shop In RI

As one can see, there are quite a number of reasons why peeling interior paint can happen. Although these are the most common, on rare occasions interior paint can peel as a result of a “bad” patch of paint. These types of incidents are EXTREMELY isolated, but it certainly is feasible that a micro percentage of the time that this could be the culprit. If you do find yourself in a situation where you are dealing with interior peeling paint, all is not lost (as disheartening as it may be to stumble upon this scenario). Once it is evident that there is an interior peeling problem, the issue should be able to be rectified by traditional surface preparation approaches (removing the peeling paint areas, filling/sanding as necessary, and properly priming). If you work to rectify the issue and at some point this nuisance returns, the recommendation would be to find the most reputable, knowledgeable paint expert possible to review the situation (even if you may have to pay to do so!). Interior peeling paint can be quite the annoyance once it is discovered. What will be even more annoying though is if it is left to simmer and is not properly addressed to rid its menacing existence.

Alexander Morris, Artist By Jennifer Coates

There is something deeply meaningful and representational about symbiotic relationships, those often unexplainable and sometimes paradoxical relationships between two different organisms which are advantageous to both species. Such interconnected relationships exist everywhere, from the depths of the ocean to the wilds of nature, to the sacred space between man and God, to the musty studio where an artist and a blank canvas become one.

For Alexander Morris, a Utah born and bred artist who now resides in Rumford, symbiotic relationships have inspired him his whole life, and have illuminated his paths as a man, a father, and an artist. As a boy, growing up under the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, he was a student of how these relationships thrived between the most unlikely of creatures - the high-flying raven and the stealthy wolf who work in unison to find their food sources; the secretive sea anemone and the colorful clownfish who work in tandem to provide shelter and nutrients.

Beyond nature are the deeper, more spiritual connective relationships that have guided Alex his whole life. Those symbiotic relationships that exist between chaos and order, passion and logic, man and woman ~ these all find expression in his art. The most important such relationship explored by Alex in his work is the relationship between his mortal being and the heavenly being he places his faith in. This relationship informs literally every piece of his art and has manifested itself on every canvas he has touched ~ whether it is a canvas stretched taut on a wooden frame or a sketch pad where he has doodled an animated drawing of his three-year old daughter Rhiannon. Inter-connection is personified in Alexander Morris’s art, and you can feel it when you see it and feel it when you are immersed in it. Alexander always knew that art would be his life’s passion, second only to the love he has for his wife Angie and two daughters, Rhiannon and 10-month old Iona. From the time he was a young boy, he knew he could “draw what he saw.” He loved imitating his favorite cartoon characters from Calvin & Hobbes (perhaps fooling Bill Watterson himself!) and later thrived as a student at the University of Utah, where he received his BFA with a focus in painting and drawing.

In high school, an advanced placement class opened his mind to painting, a love which has determined his main medium to this day: acrylic paint. Alex makes his own paint, using compounds and ink or powder pigments to

create unique colors that he then documents and uses throughout his work. When he paints his series, these colors often become a common element that unites them into a cohesive storyline. His colors are bold, vibrant, and noisy one moment, and the next, they are muted, quiet, contemplative. When applied on a canvas, they come alive, moving, and undulating one moment, pacifying and soothing the next. As an artist, Alexander is not content with just experimenting with colors, hues, textures, and techniques. He becomes consumed by his subject matters, spending hours researching topics of interest which he later captures on canvas. His thirst for knowledge might be called insatiable, for it is here where he discovers his great sources of creative energy. He is a pupil of all forms of ancient languages such as hieroglyphics and the often-indecipherable letters of old documents. He finds endless inspiration in them and they appear on many of his finished pieces, becoming one of his signature design features. Alexander Morris’s work is categorized as “nonrepresentational art” ~ for the layperson, that is a fancy word for an “abstract” painter/artist. While Alex might be labeled a “Contemporary Abstraction” artist, labels don’t concern him. He is a classically trained artist who can take what is in his mind and in his dreams, and bring it to life in swathes of color, movement, dimension, intensity, small details, and large statements.

Each creation tells a story. Alex encourages those who see his work to truly “experience” it, to listen to what the painting is saying. Beyond this, he encourages them to feel what they see, to literally hearken to how these paintings move them. Followers of Morris’s art will recognize his unique style in some of his long-curated series such as his “Listen” series, his “Father” series, his “Key” series, and his “Voyage” series. These series are personal to him, as are each of his creations. They are worth a trip to any gallery, any exhibit, any place where they are hung to behold. Alexander’s work was recently featured in the “8 Visions” show at the Attleboro Arts Museum in Attleboro, Mass. He joined seven other talented artists from around the region; Morris is counted among the best of them.

Just as COVID-19 cases appeared to have been significantly decreasing across the country and the world, along comes a new variant to take the pandemic off of the back burner. According to the RI Department of Health (RIDOH), the following provides the meaning and potential problems of COVID-19 variant viruses, highlighting the Delta variant, which is now affecting Rhode Islanders and many others across the nation, as well as globally. Viruses change all the time—this is normal and expected. These changes can happen when a virus moves from person to person. When a virus changes, the new version is called a variant. There are multiple variants of the virus that causes COVID-19. Scientists and health and medical experts are studying these variants to understand how changes to the virus affect how it spreads and how it infects people. Variants are found all over the world. The CDC is keeping track of these variants and posts updates to a web page about COVID-19 variants. Some variants spread more easily and quickly than other variants. This means they can cause more cases of COVID-19, which can lead to more hospitalizations and more deaths. Some variants may also impact our treatments, vaccines, and tests. We call these “variants of concern.” COVID-19 variants of concern are now dominant in Rhode Island. RIDOH is monitoring these variants and posting data on the COVID-19 Data Tracker. Data suggest that COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use in the United States offer protection against current COVID-19 variants. Types of Variants Scientists monitor all variants, but may classify certain ones as variants of interest, concern, or high consequence, based on how easily they spread, how severe their symptoms are, and how they are treated. An increase in the number of cases will put more strain on healthcare resources, lead to more hospitalizations, and potentially more deaths.

All vaccines are particularly effective against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Treatments: Certain monoclonal antibody treatments are less effective against this variant.

Back to School Students and teachers in all Rhode Island schools will be required to wear facemasks during the upcoming school year, regardless of vaccination status, Gov. Daniel McKee announced. The Governor signed an executive order formalizing the mask mandate in K-12 schools. “Until we can vaccinate more students, we need masks in schools,” he said with state Education Commissioner Angélica InfanteGreen. “As governor, I will not put student safety at risks.” McKee also called on Democratic leaders of the state General Assembly to reconvene lawmakers to restore some of the emergency powers granted to the governor during the peak of the pandemic. In his two-and-a-half years as the sales representative and trainer for the Northern Rhode Island dealership, Nick Cabrera has overseen a positive attitude in its nineperson sales force. That has translated into satisfied and more importantly, returning customers. Like other co-workers, Cabrera previously worked with General Manager John Durrani in Vermont, before reuniting with him in Smithfield. Cabrera said that his goals are to one day become sales manager and the top dealership in sales in the state. He believes both of those goals are attainable. “We don’t work in a high- pressure environment. There is competition, but it isn’t cutthroat. We don’t work on commission, which is a huge difference, as well. Everyone is pulling for each other to be successful,” Cabrera said. The dealership will hold its monthly private sale.
