Los Angeles Will Now Scan Subway Commuters

Devices in LA Metro will ‘quickly and unobtrusively screen individuals for concealed threats’ All humans emit body waves, but if they’re concealing an object under their clothes, that object blocks the waves exactly what the Transportation Security Administration is banking on with the installation of the country’s first body scanners in a transit agency. The subway system getting the first crack at these portable passenger screening devices is the LA Metro, which can place the high-tech scanners at the bottom of escalators or at station entrances to “quickly and unobtrusively screen individuals for concealed threats,” per the Source blog. The Thruvision scanners, which the New York Times describes as wheeled devices looking like “the sort of black laminate cases that musicians lug around on tour,” can pick up both metallic and nonmetallic objects from up to 30 feet away. The $100,000 devices are able to scan more than 2,000 people an hour.

“We’re looking specifically for weapons that have the ability to cause a masscasualty event,” Alex Wiggins, head of the LA County MTA’s law enforcement unit, tells the AP. “We’re not necessarily looking for smaller weapons that don’t have the ability to inflict mass casualties.” He adds, per the Los Angeles Times, that signs will warn about the scanners, and commuters can “opt out” (though they then won’t be able to ride the subway). The scanners don’t emit radiation or display “anatomical details,” and they won’t slow down traffic— they’ll simply scan people streaming by.

“Most people won’t even know they’re being scanned,” an LA Metro said, though one rider wonders if the system will lead to an uptick in police harassment or “false positives.” “But if we don’t even notice it, and they use it in a responsible way, then I think it’s a good thing,” the commuter adds.

Airport Facial Recognition Device Scores a Big First US Customs and Border Protection says a new facial recognition system caught its first impostor, three days after it was put into use at Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC. The system, which compares travelers’ faces to passport photos to catch impostors humans might miss - flagged a 26-year-old man who arrived on a flight from Brazil and presented a French passport that apparently didn’t belong to him. He was taken aside for questioning and a search turned up his ID card from the Republic of Congo, which he had hidden in his shoe. “So he was trying to enter the country illegally, we apprehended him, processed him, and returned him back to Brazil,” CBP official Daniel Mattina tells NBC News.

Federal authorities say the technology will speed up airport processing times and could eventually replace boarding passes, though privacy advocates worry it will be used to track “lawabiding citizens.”

Such a ball just sold for $623,369, SCP auctions said Monday. That crushes the record of $345,000 for a signed baseball, set in 2013 for a Ruth-Gehrig ball, reports the AP. The only living original inductee who didn’t sign the ball was Lou Gehrig, who on that day was headed to the Mayo Clinic where he’d be diagnosed with ALS, the disease that would end his career, take his life, and unofficially bear his name.

It was on June 12, 1939, that the Baseball Hall of Fame first opened its doors, though it had been choosing members for three years by then. Most were already dead.

Marv Owen, the star third baseman then playing for the Chicago White Sox, was in Cooperstown, NY, to play in an exhibition. His former teammate Hank Greenberg was also there, and had brought along two balls for the inductees to sign, but was too bashful to ask them.

Owen wasn’t, and got all 11 to sign.

He kept one for himself and gave the other to Greenberg. “With autographed balls, very few can you trace to the point of origin, the point of signing,” said Dan Imler, vice president of SCP Auctions.

“It’s incredible.” Owen put his ball in a safe-deposit box, and his family kept it until 1997, when it sold for $55,000. Greenberg’s ball has been lost to history.

My raspberry plants are produce a ton of fruit, and my mint plants took over the yard! It’s time to make mojitos!

Very often, I’ll use raspberries alone, but mojitos are even better when you combine the raspberries with blueberries.

Though I have a few blueberry bushes in my yard, it seems that the birds get to them before I even get a chance.

Fortunately, I have several neighbors that put little farm stands up in front of their homes, selling blueberries, so I stock up on them, rinsing them and placing them in plastic bags that go in the freezer until I’m ready to make my mojitos.

Make ahead of time…

1 1/2 cups fresh squeezed lime juice 1 1/3 cups turbinado sugar (Sugar in the Raw) Mix both ingredients together, letting it stand at room temperature for a few minutes. I like to combine them in a Mason jar, then shake really hard until the sugar has dissolved. I keep it in the fridge, and it’s good for up to 3 weeks…ready to use any time. Shake it well again before using.

Store-bought frozen fruit works well, too, so if you don’t have a farm stand down the road, don’t feel like you can’t make this fabulous cocktail. Make mojitos by the pitcher and you’ll never have them any other way!

For the Mojitos…

1 cup sugar/lime mixture 1 cup mint leaves, packed 1/2 pint blueberries (fresh or frozen) 1/2 pint raspberries (fresh or frozen) 3 or 4 cups white rum (I use Don Q Cristal rum) 3 or 4 cups club soda

Combine the mint leaves and 1/2 cup of the sugar/lime mixture in bottom of a pitcher. Muddle the mint up very well to release mint oils. Add the blueberries and continue to muddle.

Add the remaining sugar/lime mixture, rum and raspberries. Mix well. Just before serving, add the club soda and ice. Stir. Pour into tall glasses.

Or…for drinks one at a time, don’t add the club soda to the pitcher. Instead, fill a tall glass with ice. Fill it one-third to halfway with club soda, then top with the mojito mix.

Garnish it with a mint leaf.

Gina and George say that they owe everything they have accomplished to the boot camp classes and continued help from RI’s first culinary incubator, Hope & Main, also located in Warren. “If it wasn’t for Hope & Main, we wouldn’t be here. They’ve been with us from start to finish,” Lefebvre stressed. “It’s an unbelievable program.

They took us from bare bones, to licensing, to production, on to where we are now.”

Hope & Main is a non-profit whose mission is to help local entrepreneurs jumpstart early-stage food companies and food related businesses by providing low cost, low risk access to shared-use commercial kitchens and other industry-specific technical resources. With a membership to Hope & Main, the pretzel duo is able make use of Hope & Main’s state-of-the-art kitchen to concoct their one of a kind drizzle in a variety of flavors and colors.

Alongside the use of their facilities, Hope & Main also provides help and insight on branding, cost accounting, internet sales, and other facets that face new entrepreneurs.

Hoping to cash in on the big boost e-commerce sales can provide, GG’s is eagerly awaiting a new website to help with online sales, and to provide customers an easy way to find out which local events the pretzels can be found.

Ferrara and Lefebvre have been bringing their specialty pretzels to Attleboro Farmers’ Market, Somerset Open Air Market, and events like Eat Drink RI, Crave RI, Taste of the Bay, and Taste of RI. The pretzel rods can also be found inside local coffee shops like Black Pear in Barrington and Coastal Roasters in Tiverton, as well as in certain gift shops and B&Bs. Focusing on sourcing locally and working with other entrepreneurs, GG’s Pretzels is planning on pairing with Burgundian Waffles, in hopes of supplying a crunchy topping to their delicious waffles.

Right now, Ferrara and Lefebvre are handling the insand-outs of GG’s Pretzels part time, but say that the plan is to move to full time in the near future. “Little by little we’re expanding, this is just the start,” said Ferrara and Lefebvre, who are hoping to open a storefront to add delectable baked goods like cookies, cupcake, and muffins. “It was like an episode from Seinfeld,” said Le-

There’s a nationwide movement supporting a more seasonal style of eating where consuming what is locally available in season is becoming more and more popular. Some nutritionists and scientists report eating seasonally available foods is better for your body and overall health.

In RI, the peak of the native tomato season is upon us and people flock to the numerous statewide local farms to take advantage of the many available varieties picked at their pinnacle of ripeness. Most think of a tomato as being a vegetable, however, botanically, it is a fruit with a much lower sugar content that can be used in many main dishes, sauces, and salads. By Jenn Lombari While being relocated to California for business in the 80s, Bob and Mary Ann Hartman were introduced to a new way of nutritious eating. While terms like “organic” and “vegan” weren’t even a part of anyone’s vocabulary yet, natural and sensible eating just seemed like the right thing to do. Mary Ann calls it “common sense nutrition.”

They were years ahead of their time when they came back to Rhode Island and wanted to open a store that sold the best basic ingredients to create meals. In 1980, in California, you could walk into a natural foods corner store or restaurant. They visited ranches where they learned to grind wheat into flour and make their own bread. Everything you ate was grown right there, and it was fresh and chemical free. This experience won them over and inspired them. In 1982, they finally found the perfect location at 250 Main Street in East Greenwich. It used to be a cheese shop and was already set up for food preparation. Mary Ann ran the store while Bob worked his job as an accountant. They sold grains, beans, and dried fruits and nuts. Being a teacher, it came naturally to

Mary Ann to start cooking classes at the shop. There was even a small café. The people in the area really caught on to this and recognized the health benefits.

It was simple, BASIC, and made sense. As the store gained popularity and the Hartmans became more popular in this community, they moved to a bigger space at 500 Main Street in East Greenwich and have now been in business for 36 years. Bob and Mary Ann raised their kids with their common sense approach to nutrition, so they find it easy to relate to customers who want to take better care of themselves and their families by introducing this healthy lifestyle to them.

They can answer questions based on experience and customer feedback.

“We were patient enough to make it popular,” explained Mary Ann. “Over the years, we’ve seen every diet and fad possible.

We were exploring plant based cooking before the word “vegan” was popular. There are certainly health benefits associated with being vegan and plant based nutrition.”

In their 36 years of business, the biggest change the Hartmans have noticed is people with allergies. Not just seasonal allergies, but people are allergic to nuts, soy, gluten, dairy… “We try to stay ahead of all of that by offering numerous alternatives.” explained Bob. “We believe it’s a result of the QUALITY of ingredients.

It’s important to eat whole foods and ingredients as much as possible and trust in organics.”

A very popular product that has come into the market is called Cannabinoid (CBD). CBD comes from hemp, which is extracted from the plant. It is non-psychoactive and contains no THC. With CBD products gaining popularity, people are using it as an alternative to different pharmaceuticals and pain aides that contain ingredients not derived from nature. While it’s not a CURE, it is most definitely beneficial to people who use it, while paired with a healthy lifestyle. It’s been known to help with anxiety, arthritis pain, and as a sleep aid; it can calm seizures,

You won’t find olive oil in the grocery store with its crush date and nutritional chemistry on the bottle, so you never really know how fresh it is. At Back To Basics, everything is clearly marked. There are about 8 oils and a dozen balsamic vinegars.

By Julia Romano When I began my interview with the personable and energetic Derek Vecoli, I immediately sensed that his quest to become a successful hairstylist began long before he actually worked in a salon. I soon learned that his interest in all things beauty developed as a passion when he was a young man, and right after he graduated from high school, he was off on his pursuit.

Derek studied cosmetology at Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy RI in 2009. After graduating, he worked in several different salons around RI in order to gain experience and to discover his own personal styling niche.

During this time, Derek was also a product ambassador and was trained as an educator for Wella, which is still one of his favorite styling product lines, in addition to Amika and Davines products, all of which are available at Kenneth Cote. He also worked at G Spa in the Foxwoods Resort Casino, which enabled him to sharpen his scissors and skills, while pampering some entertainers, one being the fabulous late comedienne, Joan Rivers.

Fast forward to 2018. For the past four years, Derek has enjoyed working with the especially fun, upbeat, and other talented stylists at Kenneth Cote Renewal Center in East Greenwich. When asked why he chose to land at Kenneth Cote to express his creative side after leaving G Spa, Derek shared, “The team at the salon in Connecticut, while great people, was small with a quieter atmosphere. I was ready to experience a true salon environment. Kenneth Cote is the type of place I was seeking-an award winning salon with more than 41 years of successfully servicing clientele with a team of superb stylists.”

Derek went on to explain, “Having a fun, positive, outgoing personality is always best when you’re doing such creative work.” And this type of sunny attitude is why Derek has such a large following of clientele, in addition to new clients whom are always welcome. When asked about what he does that sets him apart from other stylists, Derek replied, “My clients’ images, personalities, and lifestyles are all taken into consideration when I am working with them. As a stylist, I want them to be able to replicate or be able to maintain their style when they leave the salon.”

At Kenneth Cote, new clients are afforded complimentary consultations. Derek stated, “We always encourage new and current clients to first come in and meet with their stylist to discuss concerns, a vision they may have for their look, the process, and pricing. A consultation is the starting point where I begin to get to know my clients.”

Derek’s work style, which has been an obvious success, ensures that his clients leave his chair feeling like a more polished, yet natural version of themselves-with a little bit more glam! Both men and women are welcome at the salon and there is staff that cater to men’s services, however, Derek’s clients are primarily female. His clients come from all around the state to receive his services and even some clients from out of state who come back to RI will return to see Derek when they are in back in town.

When asked his opinion about what makes a salon popular and successful, Derek stated, “A salon runs at its best when the entire staff is working as a team. A stylist can often run late or need an extra set of hands. It makes the clients feel more comfortable when there is a positive vibe of teamwork in the salon and they see how well we work

with one another.” And that’s what clients get when they experience Derek’s servicesseamless, smooth, and stress free. He added, “The beauty of working in such a big salon like Kenneth Cote is that there is typically another set of hands in case a stylist is running a little late or needs assistance with prepping a client.”

Derek strongly feels it is imperative to further one’s education in order to provide complete client satisfaction. He is currently certified in Balayage Highlighting, Keratin Treatments and Platinum Seamless Tape Hair Extensions, which are becoming more and more popular in the salon. These extensions offer a great way to add density and length with no damage to the hair.

Derek offers many different beautifying services, and on a daily basis, he most commonly provides cut & styling, professional coloring, blowouts, and hair extensions. On occasion, he provides other services for which he does extremely well, such as up-dos, keratin smoothing treatments, and even makeup application.

Rhode Island’s Premier Fashion Week, STYLEWEEK Northeast Returns September 19-22 By: Avery Marie The premier fashion week of New England returns for it’s 15th season, September 19-22nd at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI. The production of STYLEWEEK emulates those of other metropolitan city fashion weeks by its production and caliber of designers.

Clothes Horse Clothing and 9 year old, Victory Barnard who will be paired with her mother and designer, Ting Barnard. All SEEDlings student designers are from Rhode Island.

This season STYLEWEEK Northeast will showcase 12 designers from all over the region in addition to their SEEDlings: Student Design Challenge with four student designers who are 8-10 years of age on opening night.

Brendan Kirby from the Rhode Show will be the master of ceremony for this runway show and competition.

The week will continue Thursday, September 20 with newcomer, Jonee Anderson from Nantucket, MA; newcomer menswear designer Christopher Rogers and RISD student Zoe Grinfeld. Zoe is the first ever student to be participating in STYLEWEEK Northeast apart from the SEED Student Design Challenge. Zoe participated in the SEED Student Design Challenge last September 2017 where she created a 3-piece collection.

The four young students will be paired with STYLEWEEK designers where they will team up to create a 3-piece collection inspired by their imagination. The collections will be showcased on opening night, September 19th to attendees and a panel of nine judges who will provide a live critique in front of the audience. The students will be judged for a cash prize.

Friday STYLEWEEK will welcome newcomer Bostonbased Amy Lane; returning New York City designer, Born Again Vintage; Boston and Paris based, Simone Simon and closing the evening with established designer, Lavanya Coodly.

I hope everyone enjoyed summertime! Maybe you’ve been feeling a little sluggish after all of the humid weather, so we’re going to talk about how to keep your workouts simple and effective. I always tell my clients that unless you’re looking to bulk up on some major muscle, there’s no need to be working out more than 30 minutes to an hour. You can get a great workout in without spending hours at the gym.

As always, proper form and pushing yourself are the most important parts! I’m going to go over some examples and provide a couple of workouts at the end of this article.

HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training, also called Tabata, is one way to get your heart rate up and build strength. All you really need is a timer, water, and a mat if you have one. Start out by performing each exercise for 20-30 seconds and taking 10-12 seconds in between each movement. You can make it a total body workout hitting all muscle groups, or you can split it up and focus more on upper or lower body. No matter what, you’ll be getting some great cardio in while building your strength. This is one of the best routines if steady state cardio isn’t your thing or you’re in a time crunch.

If you want to take your workout outdoors, or you have access to a treadmill, incorporate sprints into your workout. Run as fast as possible for a short duration of time making sure to really lift your knees.

You should barely be able to talk after a sprint. For an even bigger challenge, do some uphill sprints or raise the incline on the treadmill as high as you can where you can get a good sprinting pace that’s safe for you. Start by getting up to sprint speed and slowly increase the incline, then for your next sprint interval, you can go right up to that number. This will not only burn calories and increase your cardio, it will also tone and sculpt your legs. What most people don’t realize is that sprinting is also a great core workout!

After your sprint, walk at a decent pace until your heart rate starts to come down and then move on to your next exercise. Do not sit after you sprint ,as it will take your heart rate down too fast; you need time to recover before moving to the next exercise.

I recommend starting out with 10-12 reps with a challenging weight that you can use with proper form. If you find that your form is off, lower the weight. You should be able to complete this in 30-45 minutes. If you want to get some steady state cardio in, do it after completing your strength routine. Running, jogging, elliptical, or rower are all great.

As always, please consult with a physician before starting a new exercise routine. Start off at a pace that’s challenging enough and work your way up. Enjoy the conclusion of your summer and stay motivated!

Sometimes you don’t have a choice, for whatever the reason may be, the existing roof is not at the point where it needs to be changed out and the skylights that you have may be experiencing significant problems. In these situations, finding someone that truly knows how to properly change out skylights within an existing roof system can be

particularly difficult - this is where you have to be REALLY careful. If not, the results could be disastrous.

Another challenge with skylights is ongoing maintenance.

Cleaning the glass (both inside & out) is a bit different than a normal window because you have to often do it from a precarious ladder situation on the interior, and the exterior glass usually can only be cleaned from the roof. If the skylight is vinyl on the outside & vinyl on the inside, maintaining its finish is normally not something that you have to be concerned about.

Although skylights may have a finish on their exterior that is weather resistant, their interior finish can often be wood and will need to have its paint or stain kept up with. These areas are super easy to forget about maintaining because they are so high up and people don’t really think about paying attention to them.The sun’s powerful rays, however, are brutal to skylight interior wood finishes and grossly influence an accelerated wearing process that if you are not careful, can creep up on you and cause more work to keep up with. It will be much less problematic if one is able to remember to check their finishes every so often and address issues, as necessary.

Skylights can unquestionably be a tremendous feature to one’s home.

If you are able to accept and work with the challenges skylights present, then you absolutely will have an aspect to your home that greatly livens whatever room where they may be located!

Thirty Missions To Marie A RI War Romance

Marie, Oh Marie, Girl of my dreams.

- “Marie” by Irving Berlin, 1929 Fourteen years ago, respected Rhode Island lawyer and Municipal Court Judge Arthur G. Capaldi found out his quiet, gracious friend Edouard J. Jacques (pictured) was a decorated war hero. The West Warwick native flew thirty highly dangerous missions over Nazi Germany to help save the world from fascism. In the course of his heroics, Jacques was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor; only the Congressional Medal of Honor stands higher in America’s military awards for courage under fire. Through it all, Ed dreamed only of returning to the girl he loved, Marie DeFosse, waiting for him back in the village of Arctic, RI. Against heavy odds, he did return, and they were together for the rest of their lives, raising a family.

Judge Capaldi sought to record the amazing story of love and war. He convinced his gentle, elderly friend and his wife to share their memories. The judge then traveled far and wide to interview nearly all of Ed’s surviving crewmen and spent years researching the war, and Ed’s role in it. The result is this stunningly detailed piece of Rhode Island history, “Thirty Missions to Marie,” A brief excerpt of the book here shows the depth of young Ed’s devotion to Marie and a fateful decision made for love.

Exclusive Excerpt from Thirty Missions to Marie: I met Edouard J. Jacques in 1968 when he was a councilman in Coventry and I was their legal advisor. He was twenty-two years older than me, but the age difference did not interfere with our forming a lifelong friendship…

During Ed’s free time as a boy, he would follow a biplane flown by the brother of the owner of a local garage. He would often land in a local farm that had open fields. Ed would race there on his bike as fast as he could to make sure he would witness the plane land. He would hang around hoping with all his might that he would catch a ride, but it never happened. That pilot would perform rolls and loops to Ed’s amazement. At that time, a desire to fly and love of flying was seated deep in Ed’s young heart. He never dreamed of the heights that this desire would take him.

Strangely, I never once inquired about his wartime service to our country and he never brought it up until during one of his friendly visits to my office in 2004.

I asked him if he served in WWII. I was flooded with awesome stories about his life during the tumultuous happenings of WWII and his experiences as a bombardier with the Eighth Air Force.

Ed came to my office the next day, armed with a scrapbook loaded with mission maps, orders, mission descriptions, and pictures of B-24 nose art, plus aerial photographs of Germany, and other memorabilia. In my hands, I held original documents; one assigned 2nd Lt. Jacques and his crew to combat, one awarded him the Air Medal and another the Oak Leaf Cluster for courage and skill displayed in the face of determined opposition. I never saw such a complete firsthand record of one man’s contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany.

On one occasion, returning to the barracks became a harrowing experience. It was snowing very hard and although the wipers were working, the heater and defrosters were not. Ice and snow built up on the windshield. They stopped frequently along the way so each solider had a turn going outside to clear the windows. Visibility was not even one hundred feet. Luckily, they could see the headlights from on-coming traffic.

Someone said that tobacco keeps ice off the windows, so they took tobacco from their cigarettes—except for Ed, who never smoked—and wiped it on the windshield. Needless to say, that didn’t work. They even stopped to ask for salt.

They crawled along with everyone’s head sticking out the windows to make sure they did not hit anything or anyone.

They endured this all for love of girls and drink. They all made it back in time for reveille.

Many of Ed’s friends were getting married and Ed wanted to marry Marie very, very badly. Marie, however, had other thoughts. Though she was also very much in love with him, she was a realist. She told Ed that if they were to get married, they’d be starting a family. She posed a very sobering question. How was he going to support a child and a family on thirty-three dollars a month? (about $594.00 in 2018 dollars.)

Ed had a solution. He would become an officer in order to make enough money to get married. Marie shyly recalled his proposal and her response.

“I kept saying no, no, you don’t make enough money and suppose I get pregnant? I was thinking of all these things.

Finally, he said, ‘If I go to school and become an officer would you marry me?’ I said, ‘Oh Yes’, but I didn’t think he was going to do it, but then he fooled me and did it. When he graduated as an officer he looked at me and he said, ‘you promised’.”

In 1943, Ed first tried to enroll in the officer candidate school for the infantry. He was rejected after all the tests because he had flat feet. Ed went before a panel of Army officers who remarked about his IQ of 135. They recommended that Ed should try for the Army Air Force, saying, “They don’t walk, they fly”.

Ed was making $33.00 a month in the National Guard, but if he made it in the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant, he would earn $416.00 a month including flight pay. In 1943, this was a handsome salary (about $6,050.00 in 2018 dollars) and more than what was needed to support a wife and a family.

“The doctor decided to send me to base hospital for a final word from the Air Force,” recalled Ed. “My sister Diana and Marie came with me to Windsor Locks Air Field in Connecticut for another physical. I passed. I was on my way to be a flying cadet with a beautiful uniform somewhat like officers wear. That was the beginning of a completely new life for me.”

The harrowing missions that followed read more like a John Wayne movie than the experiences of a guy from Artic, RI, but Judge Capaldi documents it all in a moment by moment “you are there” style thanks to his exhaustive research interviewing fellow fliers, crewmen, witnesses, and consulting endless records, maps, and photographs.

CRAFT BEER

By Julia Romano is clear is it is made without the traditional equipment used to create a beer product, produced in a small brewery, and then there’s the difference in flavor. From here the definition becomes a little muddied.

According to the Brewers Association (BA), a notfor-profit trade group that protects and promotes small and independent U.S. brewers and represents more than 4,000 independent and craft brewers, craft beer breweries are defined with three words: small, independent, and traditional.

For beer lovers, their taste buds not only find it palatable, their desire for it surpasses any other kind of alcohol. Let’s face it-beer tastes like, well-just beer. Then there is what is called “craft beer.” Until about a decade ago, “craft beer” was a virtual unknown. Nowadays, people are more experimental.

They are seeking something more, something different from the norm. Craft beer provides just that. Its numerous flavors have changed the taste to more than just-beer. Craft beer can be made with various flavors, and at times, tastes like chocolate, coffee, oak, caramel, molasses, grass, floral hops, dark fruit, smoke, grapefruit, oranges, lemon, coriander, pumpkin, hazelnut, and any number of other ingredients.

In the last few years, craft beer has busted through the beer market and its market and growth in popularity have exploded.

What is “craft beer?” Craft beer can be tricky to define. What

Small, independent, and traditional are defined by the Brewers Association as follows: 1. In the past, “small” had a meaning of a production output limited to 2 million barrels per year produced by a brewery. In 2014, it increased to 6 million barrels per year. The BA then added another measure of percentagewhat they define as a “craft brewery” could only produce 3% of the market, meaning if the brewery market output increases, a craft brewery can grow right along with it.

2. “Independent” means just about the same thing—a limit of 25% of a brewery can be owned by anyone not identified as a craft brewer.

A micro-brewery is a brewery that makes less than 15,000 barrels per year and usually concentrates on exotic tasting or high quality beer.

A brew pub is a commercial establishment that brews its own beer for sales on and off the premises and is typically found within a restaurant setting.

A contract brewing company is a business that outsources its production of beer. It can also be a brewery that contracts with another brewery to produce more beer. The contract brewing company manages marketing, sales, and distribution of its beer, while typically leaving the brewing and packaging to its producer-brewery (which, confusingly, is also sometimes referred to as a contract brewery).

A regional craft brewery is an independent regional brewery with most of its product volume in “traditional” or “innovative” beer.

A regional brewer is a brewery with an annual beer production of between 15,000 and 6,000,000 barrels of beer.

According to the Brewers Association statistics, its members’ share of the market has been increasing slowly, with a production of 12.3 percent of craft beer sold in the U.S. in 2016. Retail dollar sales of craft beer increased 10 percent in 2016 to $23.5 billion according to the BA, which is about 22 percent of the $107.6 billion U.S. beer market.

The conglomerate of mammoth beer breweries have continued to purchase many of the craft breweries in the past several years, making it difficult to define craft versus non-craft brewing companies. Microbreweries are small, independently owned, and are primarily known for their “specialty beers.” They are typically small-batch “boutique” beers, which might be made only for a certain season or theme, or designed to highlight special ingredients.

Microbrewers frequently experiment with different types of beer and ingredients, or different fermentation processes.

A craft brewery produces no more than 2 million gallons of beer per year and is independently owned. Unlike a microbrewery, a craft brewery has set limitations on the brewing techniques of their beer production. Beer that is not

considered a “craft beer” is typically served ice cold from a can or bottle and is often be consumed in large quantities.

Craft beer has powerful, distinct flavors and is gently poured into a special glass at just the right temperature, and is allowed time to warm and dispense its flavors before the beer itself is savored on the palate and the various flavors are allowed to arise and commingle. While beer tastes like what it is-beer, craft beer is appreciated for its diversity of flavors.

A micro-brewery is classified by the number of beer barrels it produces in a year, which is set at a limit of 15,000 beer barrels a year or 460,000 gallons, and at least 75 percent of that beer must be sold off site from the brewery. There are no regulations set on the process or ingredients a microbrewery uses to produce their beer. In order to gain popularity, microbreweries must be creative with advertising and getting the word out about their product. Most microbreweries have a tasting room where beer aficionados can revel in the establishment’s unique creations. Some are combined with a brew pub so that patrons can get to know and appreciate their craft.

The other way to establish a reputation is at beer festivals.

Beer festivals allow microbreweries to gain recognition and to set themselves apart from other microbrewers. Beer enthusiasts love to go to beer festivals for the mega extent and variety of their favorite beverage, all in one location.

The U.S. currently has about 150 beer styles and more than 20,000 brands to choose from, which is more than any other product market in the world. As of early 2018, more than 6,000 breweries are representative of the beer brands available in the U.S. Rhode Island has no shortage of microbreweries, brewpubs, as well as liquor stores that shelve craft beer, and in recent years, the places that offer craft beer have significantly increased in numbers. There is a huge variety of brewpubs across the state that offer an ideal place to taste uniquely made craft beer, along with a delicious meal in a relaxing setting.

I have had the privilege to call the owner of Rossi Electric, Vinny Rossi, a friend of mine since childhood. Vinny’s story is inspirational and is the epitome of dreaming big, never giving up, and always believing in yourself.

Although I’ve known Vinny since we were seven years old, I didn’t realize he he wanted to be an electrician until several years later.

Here I was, playing neighborhood games with this group of kids, with not a thought about where our futures would take us, but all along, Vinny knew what profession he would pursue. After we graduated from high school, like many do, Vinny and I had lost touch. I had no idea what professional direction he had taken until I returned to Rhode Island and heard that he the was owner of Rossi Electric. Well here’s where I hope to inspire people. Vinny did not grow up with a “silver spoon in his mouth.”

We lived in an ordinary middle class, nice neighborhood with hard working parents.

Vinny was your typical young boy having mischievous fun with his friends, which resulted in some minor issues. I say minor, but at one point, someone actually said to him, “Vin, you will not amount to anything.

You will probably end up in jail.” Vinny has proven those who doubted him wrong.

With his hardwork and dedication, Rossi Electric has grown into one of the most successful electric companies in RI. Where did Vinny begin? After high school, he attended New England Tech.

Here he learned how to be an electrician, but didn’t have the opportunity for hands-on experience. He became familiar with the background of being an electrician, but the hands-on experience would come once he began working in the field.

After graduating from NE Tech, Vinny went to work for the Union. While he was working full time, he also decided to go back to school. He worked during the day and went to school two nights a week and did this for four years. Eventually, he worked for A contractor for seven years learning and gaining the experience he would need to venture off on his own.

In 1993 Vinny decided to go into business for himself. This was the beginning of Rossi Electric. At the same time, Vinny had bought his first house, bought his wife a brand new car, and within six months, they were blessed with their first little girl.

Success may not have come immediately, but because of his hard work, he managed to do all of this at one time. When asked how he attained his goals he replied “For five years I worked from 6am to 10pm every single day.”

Vinny started the business out of his house, with just one other employee then moved on to his first rented garage for three years. At this point, his business was starting to grow so he bought his first building nearby our childhood neighborhood.

At this time he had grown and had a total of six employees.

Since Rossi Electric focused on commercial properties and received contracts by bids only, Vinny decided to open a service

and homeowners’ division, calling it Mr. Electric. He operated Mr. Electric for 10 years, but Rossi Electric’s success was growing and that’s where he wanted to focus. Vinny was beginning to really see his long days of hard work pay off. He now owns a beautiful office in Western Cranston, employs 180 people, and still goes to work every day.

If you live in Rhode Island, it’s almost impossible not to see Rossi Electric trucks on the road. They do lots of work on stop lights, commercial plazas, as well as many other projects. Some clients of Rossi Electric include: statewide colleges and hospitals, CVS, FM Global, and the new Tiverton Casino, to name just a few.

For me, taking a tour of my childhood friend’s business was amazing. I was extremely impressed because I know first hand that he built his business from scratch with tremendous work ethic and dedication. For anyone who questions if they can achieve something, let Vinny be your inspiration. He worked at this on his own. He has a tremendous relationship with his empoyees and vice versa. . During my tour of Rossi Electric, It felt like I was walking through a huge 8000 sq. ft building comprised of one big giant family!

There is no doubt that hard work pays off, but I also believe the way you treat people aids in your success.

People want to help good people and Vinny is definitely “good people.” He is a great man to work for and he is the man you want doing your work!

PIXELES DIGITAL PRODUCTIONS CHIEF HAS A WELL-TRAVELED STORY There are few people who can see the world through a different perspective. Everyone has a different set of eyes, which gives a unique perspective that defines us. However, what happens when those images are seen by someone from the outside? The answer lies within the viewer’s own opinions and thoughts on that topic—one that may signal a turning point for a project.

Based in Cranston, RI by way of Mexico, Guillermo Garcia, owner of Pixeles Digital Productions, specializes in videography, website production and photography for multiple clients. While there is not a “secret formula” for success, Garcia said that the one aspect of his professional career that sustains him is the ability to tell a story through pictures.

“Clients who hire me want their story to be told; to freeze that moment in time that they can return to it over and over again,” said Garcia, who moved into the area from Boston via Mexico. “It’s their opportunity to preserve something that is special to them. That becomes my goal; making my customers happy and walk away from the experience satisfied.”

Pixeles Digital Productions formed in 2013 after Garcia worked at Teplow & Co., in Brookline, Massachusetts, as Computer Systems Analyst and Web Developer and forming his own video editing studio called Calli Productions in Boston. Before that, Garcia worked as a Computer Systems Analyst for Bird’s Eye Foods in Mexico.

It was there that his life’s path changed—and brought him here to the United States. While employed by Bird’s Eye Foods, Garcia said he got the chance to study in an intensive program in business communications at Harvard Business School. He cited this program as “my first step in my extended professional development.”

Garcia eventually enrolled in Harvard University and concentrated on the University’s Business program. After graduating with a degree in Business Management, Garcia stayed on campus cooperating with two organizations at Harvard Medical School. He collaborates with the School’s Reflections in Action, a program that reaches out to middle school-aged children of different ethnic and social backgrounds, and teaches them the value of building a community.

For the Harvard Business School’s Diversity, Inclusion and Community Partners Group, Garcia facilitates the film creation for documentaries, video conferences and video seminars.

In 2016, Garcia was recognized by the Harvard Medical School for his efforts in video production. He received accolades from the non-profit organization, Reflections in Action, for his nearly 10 years of service. A year earlier, he attended the New York Film Academy at Harvard University filmmaking Intensive program, where it led to Garcia directing his first documentary.

Titled “Little Angel,” the work shows the path of a family as they overcome adversity with a handicapped child.

Garcia said his agency has associates fluent in English, Italian, Spanish, German and French. They offer assistance in sketch artists and sound engineering. No matter what language someone used, it’s a good bet that his company will get the customer’s point across, Garcia said.

“It’s true that the world around us keeps changing, and that we must continue to educate ourselves and determine what will keep us relevant in the workplace and within our own communities,” Garcia said. “Not only do we offer a wide variety of marketing and production services, but we also cater to a diversified clientele. That is one of the attributes that I feel separates us from other similar businesses. We can relate to different people and their wants and needs because our staff also comes from different backgrounds.”

His objective now is finding small companies that are looking to expand their visibility. He said reaching out to the Hispanic, Latino and other minority communities would be of particular importance because he feels those groups are underserved. He noted that companies that either do not have a web presence or have not updated their business profiles in some time are great conversation starters for Garcia.

“These groups have a lot to offer customers, but they are either unsure of where to turn, feel uncomfortable asking someone they do not know, or perhaps a combination of both,” said Garcia. “These business owners and professionals may want to work with someone that they know, like and trust, so to speak. Although I am based here, I travel throughout New England and can work virtually, as I currently have several clients based in Mexico.”

Garcia is a member of the Business Networking International (BNI) Founders Chapter, Harvard University Alumni Association, Harvard University Faculty Club, the Harvard Club of Rhode Island and a frequent face on the networking circuit.

movie review: the meg

Most people can’t go wrong with a shark movie. It is both scary and thrilling watching people swim for their lives, while a shark chases behind them. However, The Meg has taken this a step further-by having people swim for their lives, while a prehistoric, thought to be extinct 90 foot shark chases behind them.

The movie starts deep under the sea in a sunken nuclear sub, and follows Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham), a rescue diver, as he rescues men from the boat. However, when he returns to the rescue vessel, he learns that two of his friends are still trapped in the sub as a mysterious force.

Jonas realizes that he cannot save them and seals the door right before the sub explodes. One of the survivors, Dr. Heller (Robert Taylor), dismisses his claims of a giant sea creature attacking the boat, and says that Taylor was affected by pressure-induced psychosis.

Five years after the incident, Jack Morris (Rainn Wilson) meets with Dr. Minway Zhang (Winston Chao) at his research facility called Mana One. Zhang and his team want to attempt to explore even more of the Marianas Trench, based on a theory that the seafloor was actually a layer of hydrogen sulfide, creating a wall hiding a whole new sea environment. The mission includes Taylor’s exwife Lori, Toshi (Masi Oka), and The Wall (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson). They manage to make it down and confirm their suspicions, revealing a whole new world. They begin to explore the area until a large creature hits the sub, causing it to lose contact with the station. One of the men on the station, Mac (Cliff Curtis), suggests that they get Jonas to dive and help save the scientists in the sub. Despite Dr. Heller’s protests, Zhang and Mac manage to get Jonas to dive, but not before Suyin (Li BingBing), Zhang’s daughter, goes down herself. While under the sea, her sub is attacked by a squid, but the squid is killed and dragged away by a much larger creature, which Jonas identifies as the Megalodon (The Meg). He manages to save Lori and The Wall, but before The Meg can attack them, Toshi turns on the sub lights and sacrifices himself.

Back on Mana One, the scientists discover that it truly was the Megalodon putting Jonas’ insane ideas to rest. While they talk, Suyin’s daughter (Shuya Sophia Cai) comes face to face with the beast, who bites into the glass. Luckily her daughter is saved, and that is when the scientists realize they breached the hydrogen sulfide, allowing the beast to enter their waters. Realizing how much danger everyone is put in with the shark on the loose, they decide to go out and kill it.

Overall, I thought the movie was horrible. As an avid reader of the series since I was young, I expected a lot from the

movie, perhaps too much. Throughout the movie, I found myself becoming less interested with the movie and questioning the plot points. Shark movies are especially hard to make, and you certainly cannot fit a six book series into less than two hours. Can you imagine the Harry Potter series in 2 hours? Exactly! It’s impossible.

Besides that, the plot was very jumbled and the characters were not well developed. For example, you have the classic rich guy that does not care about safety, but only money, the old and wise father that ALWAYS dies, the innocent child, the sassy and intelligent girl, the female lead that cares too much about everyone and throws herself into life-or-death situations, the guy that is just there for comedic effect, and the super buff ex-military official that says he does NOT want to go back, but yet he does anyways. They all followed the same path in the movie, doing the same things in different situations.

The movie did not please me at all. I was extremely let down and disappointed by the way the movie was put together. There were moments where I was bouncing in anticipation and moments where I was laughing at the classic shark eating people, but then there were moments where I wanted to scoff, when I even said out loud, “What is this? Was that really it?”

Overall, I give The Meg a 0.5 out of 6 diamonds.

Q. 28 is young to be running for office. What kind of experience do you have?

Nick: First, we need new blood in Rhode Island politics, and we need young people who understand the increasingly complicated world we live in. People like to beat up on ‘millennials’, but there are certain skills my generation was forced to learn simply by growing up when we did. Chief among those is the ability to adapt to change quickly, something our politics has been unable to do for a long time. But I’ve also seen how badly older generations of politicians have screwed up, leaving us with pension crises across the state, crumbling schools, dilapidated roads and bridges, and an economy that’s performing way below its potential.

I actually think I have the ideal experience for a young elected official. First, my life story – growing up in Rhode Island and learning the lessons of what happens when the economy doesn’t work first hand. When I was in college, I was the first openly-gay Student Body Vice President at America’s fourth largest university – and one of its most diverse. I learned how to get along with and work with people from every possibly background, nationality, and race. I’ve worked low-wage jobs in hospitality, so I can actually understand what it’s like to have to choose between paying rent or paying other bills. I’ve worked at a start-up, so I understand the challenges of starting a small business and the 21st century economy.

For the last few years, I’ve worked in the state economic development office, where I’ve shown I can actually get things done. For example, I worked on getting Norwegian Airlines to TF Green Airport – that was huge. The first year-round service to Europe from our airport ever, and extremely competitive prices.

That’s good for our families, our businesses, and our economy. I can’t tell you how often I run into families from the UK and Ireland in restaurants and stores around my district. They’re here because of that, and they’re spending money here. That’s good. I’ve also worked on a project called the Innovation Campus, which voters approved in 2016, to build university-industry partnerships to accelerate R&D coming out of our universities and turning it into companies and jobs in Rhode Island. We need more of that.

Q.

Why are you a Democrat?

Nick: I’m a Democrat because I believe government and the economy should work for all of the people all of the time, civil rights should be protected and expanded, climate change is a real thing and we have to deal with it. Fundamentally, that’s it. People make a lot about one-party rule in Rhode Island, and part of that problem is that the Rhode Island Democratic Party has been bloated for a long time. This is probably very impolitic to say, but it would be better for our state and our politics if people who are Republicans but run as Democrats in order to win just ran as Republicans. Honest competition is healthy. That said, I plan on standing up very strongly for Democratic values like equality, opportunity, protecting the most vulnerable in our society, and creating a state where everyone has a chance to make it.

Q. You haven’t mentioned Donald Trump once in this interview. Why? Nick: I am not a fan of the president, the racism he is inciting, the division he is sowing, the corruption of his administration, or what he’s doing to our image abroad. But I’m running to show there is a better way in our politics by showing people that modern, Democratic ideas work can for everyday Rhode Islanders. We can’t just be against things, we have to be for them. People are sick of negative politics, and politicians just bashing each other and never talking about how they’re going to make life better for their constituents.

But if your primary motivation in running for office is to fight the president, then you should be running for Congress, not the General Assembly. Presidents come and go, I want to be focused on Rhode Island and what we can do to build our state up right now.

A: When you own term insurance, you pay a level premium for a defined period of time, such as 5, 10 or 20 years. During this period of time, the premiums are usually low compared to other types of insurance.

Additionally, the death benefit is payable if the insured passes away during that period of time as long as the policy is in force upon the death of the insured.

In many cases, the term policy can be extended beyond the initial term years as described above.

However, premiums can increase dramatically and can rise every year. Because of this, most people will cancel the policy, as there is no cash value to be paid out or they may purchase a new term period but at a higher rate because of their age.

Q: Does Medicare pay for nursing home costs?

A: It depends. When a person needs short-term rehabilitation care that is not expected to last longer than 100 days, then Medicare does pay some or all of the costs associated with that care. Specifically, Medicare pays 100% of the costs for the first 20 days of stay at a nursing home. For the remaining 80 days (days 21-100), Medicare pays for all but $164.50 per day of the costs. K9 Connection was first founded in 1989 by Sharon Casey, and was originally located at the Pontiac Mills in Warwick, before it moved to Greystone Street. Karen Mancini became the owner in 1994 and moved it to 60 Minnesota Avenue where it still sits today. In 2009, Cassandra Birocco and her partner Teri Desrosiers bought and took over the business from Karen Mancini.

“Teri has been involved in training and showing dogs since 1991, and taught classes at the K9 Connection. When Karen was talking of selling, Teri expressed an interest and bought it and I came aboard shortly after,” Cassandra explained. With a large variety of classes including Puppy Manners, Basic Obedience, Foundation to Advanced Agility, Rally Obedience, Trick Dog Class, Canine Good Citizen classes, Competition Obedience, and even Conformation classes, K9 Connection has a lot of offerings for all levels and ages of pets. You can also get your dog certified by the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Program and Trick Test certifications. The Obedience classes can start with a pet as young as 12 weeks, but even old dogs can learn new tricks.

“We have pet owners who took classes 30 years ago and are coming back with new puppies,” Cassandra stated. “It’s important to get them in when they’re still really young.

It’s very affordable for a 6-week class and we offer coupons too!” As a special service, K9 Connection even offers private one-on-one sessions for any of their classes.

The classes are offered on evenings from Monday through Friday, as well as Saturday mornings. While the classes are run and performed very professionally, there is definitely a personable sense of fun that provides not only the dogs, but their owners, a great source of socialization. Cassandra and Teri both hope that by adding more space to their facility, they will be able to host an even larger array of classes.

“For us and our trainers, the safety of our clients comes first and foremost with the reputation of K9 Connection,” Cassandra stressed. “We are super focused on safety here and are particular about screening the dogs as best as we can, and have trainers who read their personalities and their behaviors...not one mark against us in the past 30 years! Inaugural Glocester Galleria

Wanting to promote a further sense of area pride and discover what to do for hobbies and entertainment, organizers are preparing for the first annual Glocester Galleria that will take place at The Pavilion at Kent Field, located on Main Street, Rte. 44 in Chepachet. The event opens at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 2:00 p.m.

Barrett said that they are happy with the number of vendors that have signed up to date. They are hoping to have some 50 vendors from the region. Participating vendors will be listed on the Glocester Galleria’s Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/ GlocesterGaleria), which will be updated regularly. Vendors will also be promoted on that page through a feature vignette.

This free event will feature some two-dozen vendors ranging from clothing, handmade soaps, essential oils and other holistic products, jewelry, fine art, home décor, and farm fresh favorites.

Popular local band, The MillRats, which blends Country, Blues, and Rock and Roll genres, will provide the entertainment from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Local merchants, Chepachet Village Wine and Spirits, Cady’s Tavern, Fred Wilkes, and Tavern on Main are lending their support to this event.

Laurie Gaddis Barrett, one of the co-organizers of the event with Katie Guilbault said that the inspiration for this event came from Guilbault. “Katie likes the idea of the ‘putting your money where your heart is’ philosophy and wanted to find an outlet for local businesses to show off their skills. From there, the enthusiasm and support from the community led to the realization of the gathering actually happening,” said Barrett.

“Over the last few years, I noticed the town blossoming with community spirit and I wanted to be part of its continued growth,” Guilbault said. “I always loved the happy and positive atmosphere of farmers’ markets and music festivals, and wanted to create an event that had something for everyone to enjoy.”

Barrett echoed those sentiments in putting an event of this type into motion.

“It was Katie’s idea to start some type of festival in town that shows its support for the local artisans, crafters, and other businesses in the area,” said Barrett, who is the owner/founder of a clothing design firm, while Guilbault is a local artist. “The Pavilion at Kent Field is such a beautiful spot. We hope to fill it with vendors, food trucks, fun things for kids to do, and music.”

“Come shopping at the Glocester Galleria, then have a picnic on the lawn while listening to great music,” she continued. “We envisioned an event that the town would be excited to participate in and have a good time.” It seems as though their vision is about to become a reality.

Another goal the organizers want to achieve is buying and shopping local. “Most people know and like the national brands of items, products, and services,” said Barrett. “However, they also have a shorter shelf life and might have additional uses,” she added. “Attending events such as this one may open more than a few eyes to the options that are out there.”

“There’s a fashion revolution going on right now,” Barrett said.

“People want to know who made their clothes. The average person just wants a good-looking, high-quality shirt that isn’t see-through and lasts more than three months. " “Add that on top of all of the food recalls from national food distributors. I want to know the farmer that grows my vegetables.

“Wouldn’t it be fun to learn how to shop local and meet local vendors and be more affiliated with people in town?” Barrett added. “Many of the vendors and sponsors grew up here and want to become more active in this community. What could be a better cause than that?”
