A Once In A Lifetime Opportunity Awaits Field of Dreams Fans in 2020.

Field of Dreams is becoming a reality in 2020, when the New York Yankees will take on the Chicago White Sox in a regular season game at Dyersville Farm in Iowa, site of the original movie, on August 13. The 1989 fantasy baseball movie has become a true American classic. 30 years after Kevin Costner heard the immortal words “If you build it, he will come”, a regular season game will be played where the film was shot.

Field of Dreams would be nothing without its fields. The baseball diamond stretched across two farms, on land owned by the Lansing and Ameskamp families respectively. The Field of Dreams Movie Site explains how Don Lansing was approached by a representative who knocked on the door.

MLB (Major League Baseball) has announced some building work of their own. While a ballpark was created for the original shoot, a temporary stadium holding 8,000 will be put up nearby for the special event.

The production may have wrapped decades ago, but tourism boomed over the years. It wasn’t all plain sailing for the Lansings and Ameskamps, who reportedly had disputes over the direction of the site. In 2012 the land was sold to Go The Distance, who welcome over 100,000 visitors per year.

A pathway through a cornfield will take fans to the ballpark, which will overlook the famous movie location.

The right field wall will include windows to show the cornfields beyond the ballpark.

FOX will televise the forthcoming game, which should recapture the magic of Field of Dreams whilst introducing new generations to this enduring movie experience. No word on how expensive tickets will be just yet.

Tourists Face Jail Over Odd Crime:

Sand Theft

A French couple who visited the Italian island of Sardinia swear they just wanted to bring home a reminder of their visit. Now they’re facing possible jail time as a result, reports the Local. Their offense? Alleged sand theft. And not just a thimbleful: Authorities confiscated 90 pounds of sand in their vehicle, stuffed into 14 plastic bottles, as the couple tried to get on a ferry back to France. If they catch a judge in a bad mood, the couple could get one to six years in jail because, as it turns out, sand theft is a thing in Sardinia. In fact, so many tou4 ShopInRI

rists have been walking away with the stuff that the island passed a law in 2017 outlawing the trade in sand, shells, and the like, . ”Sandy beaches are one of the main attractions of Sardinia,” a local environmentalist explains. These beaches face the natural threat of erosion and the not-so-natural threat of thieving tourists, he says. If even 5% of the annual 1 million visitors indulged at even half the rate of the French couple, ”that would contribute significantly to the reduction of beaches—the main reason why tourists are attracted by the island of Sardinia.” The Local cites a growing international trade in Sardinian sand and shells, with sellers often popping up on sites such as eBay.

Patent Office to Tom Brady: You Are Not ‘Tom Terrific’ Tom Brady can still be terrific. He just can’t be Terrific, the US Patent and Trademark Office has decided.

The star Patriots quarterback had applied for trademark protection for the “Tom Terrific” nickname, which has long been applied to baseball Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, 74. The applications by Brady’s company involved commercial uses of the nickname on trading cards, posters and shirts, reports Boston.com. Such uses would “falsely suggest a connection” with the retired Mets pitcher, the ruling said. Because the nickname refers “uniquely and unmistakably” to Seaver, he’d have to agree to Brady’s trademarking of it.

Brady’s application outraged many fans, especially Mets fans, and he said he didn’t intend to actually cash in on the nickname. He doesn’t like it, he said, and just wanted to keep others from selling products calling him “Tom Terrific.” The quarterback said: “It wasn’t something I was trying to do out of any disrespect or ill manner or anything like that.” He called the episode a “good lesson learned.”

The trademark applications will be dropped automatically unless Brady responds within six months to the ruling.

Beverly Hills Mountain once listed for $1 Billion Sells For Only $100K

A sprawling LA property once listed at $1 billion sold last month for just $100,000. That’s not the worst of it, the Guardian reports. The so-called Mountain of Beverly Hills was repurchased by its former owner along with an estimated $200 million in debt. ”This is the largest non-judicial foreclosure sale and the largest loss from a lender I’ve seen in 27 years,” a lawyer battling for the property tells the LA Times. With 157 acres and glittering views, the plot was expected to do better.

Reports had Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise among possible buyers. But problems date back to 2004, when the estate of late Herbalife founder Mark Hughes sold the land to investor Chip Dickens and lent him about $45 million to do it.

Dickens then transferred ownership to an LLC that couldn’t pay the debts, which swelled to around $200 million. And who wants to buy that? “No one,” said a woman in sunglasses when asked her identity at the property’s auction in Pomona. “Just stopped by for a walk.” Indeed, no one offered a bid and the Hughes estate repurchased it with the debt. HOMEMADE BEEF JERKY IS THE BEST!

iNGREDIENTS:

Like hot dogs and Slim Jims, jerky is one of those “mystery meats” we love but don’t really know how it’s made or what part of the animal it comes from. It’s also the only thing my nieces and my co-workers want from me, so I always make huge batches!

Really excellent beef jerky is a rare treat, and once you have it, you will never go back to what you find in a bag at the supermarket.

And the best part is: it’s easy to make.

Shop around for a really nice slab of London broil or similar cut. You don’t need to buy an expensive piece of grassfed beef, but the better the meat, the better the jerky. Remove all the gristle and fat that may be on the meat and then slice it against the grain and on a diagonal, into 1/4 thick slices. Toss all the meat in a Ziploc bag. Once you’ve done that, all you need to do is make the marinade, marinate the beef overnight, and then dry it the next day. Your final product will be a flavorful beef jerky that is so good, you’ll find it very hard to stop eating it…or to share it.

If you use gluten-free soy sauce and teriyaki sauce (La Choy is the brand I use, found in any supermarket), this recipe can be considered gluten-free. Be careful: regular soy sauce, and even some tamari sauces, have wheat in them. Read the label!

1 tablespoon salt 1 1/2 tablespoons granulated garlic 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon fresh minced peeled ginger 2/3 cup brown sugar 1 cup teriyaki sauce (I use La Choy) 1 cup soy sauce (I use La Choy) 8 lbs. raw, lean beef, like London broil, cut into 1/4 thick • diagonal slices, against the grain of the meat

DIRECTIONS: Combine all the ingredients except the meat in a large bowl. Whisk it well. Place the meat in a large Ziploc bag, pour the marinade inside, seal it, and refrigerate it overnight. Squish the bag around once in a while, to make sure all the meat surfaces make contact with the marinade. Keep the bag in a bowl to prevent any accidental spillage in your fridge!

The next day, pour off the marinade and discard it. Using a food dehydrator, dry the meat by laying strips in a single layer. You can also dry them in a 140 degree oven on racks slightly elevated off a baking sheet. Drying could take several hours to half a day, depending on how dry and chewy you like your jerky, and how thickly you sliced it.

Spiced Pumpkin Cider

Pumpkin Smoothie

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix) 2-1/2 cups apple cider 1/3 cup spiced rum 1-1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice Cinnamon stick

INGREDIENTS: 1 can pumpkin puree (16 oz.)

2 cups milk 1/4 cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon DIRECTIONS: 1. Place the pumpkin puree in a freezer bag.

Store in freezer for at least 24 hours.

2. Thaw frozen pumpkin until soft.

3. Pour the milk into a blender.

Add the brown sugar, cinnamon and thawed pumpkin.

Blend until smooth.

DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large pot, mix together the pumpkin puree, apple cider, pumpkin pie spice and the cinnamon stick.

2. Bring mixture to a boil then reduce heat to low and simmer for at least 20 minutes. If mixture is too thick, add additional cider or water to thin it out.

3. Strain the mixture through a mesh strainer to remove clumps and cinnamon stick. Add rum and mix. Serve warm.

Our job is to sift through the sameness and find new looks, items, colors, fabrics, and styles to make sure that Franklin Rogers remains in the forefront of fashion in our marketing area.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far! Maybe you’ve been feeling a little sluggish with all of this humid weather, so we’re going to talk about how to keep your workouts simple and effective. I always tell my clients that unless you’re looking to bulk up on some major muscle, there’s no need to be working out more than 30 minutes to an hour.

You can get a great workout in without spending hours at the gym. As always, proper form and pushing yourself are the most important parts! I’m going to go over some examples and provide a couple of workouts at the end of this article.

HIIT or high intensity interval training, also called Tabata, is one way to get your heart rate up and build strength. All you really need is a timer, water and a mat, if you have one.

Start out by performing each exercise for 20-30 seconds and taking 10-12 seconds in between each movement. You can make it a total body workout hitting all muscle groups, or you can split it up and focus more on upper or lower body. No matter what, you’ll be getting some great cardio in, while building your strength. This is one of the best routines if steady state cardio isn’t your thing or you’re in a time crunch.

If you want to take your workout outdoors or you have access to a treadmill, incorporate sprints into your workout. Run as fast as possible for a short duration of time, making sure to really lift your knees. You should barely be able to talk after a sprint. For an even bigger challenge, do some uphill sprints or raise the incline on the treadmill as high as you can, where you can get a good sprinting pace that’s safe for you. Start by getting up to sprint speed and slowly increase the incline, then for your next sprint interval, you can go right up to that number. This will not only burn calories and increase your cardio, it will also tone and sculpt your legs. What most people don’t realize is that sprinting is also a great core workout! After your sprint, walk at a decent pace until your heart rate starts to come down and then move on to your next exercise. Do not sit after you sprint, as it will take your heart rate down too fast; you need time to recover before moving to the next exercise.

Strength training doesn’t have to take a long time. Pick 3 sets of 3 exercises each. You can do each move for 3040 seconds to start, or you can do a specific number like 10-12 reps of each exercise. I recommend starting out with 10-12 reps with a challenging weight that you can 40 ShopInRI

use with proper form. If you find that your form is off, lower the weight. You should be able to complete this in 30-45 minutes. If you want to get some steady state cardio in, do it after completing your strength routine.

Running, jogging, elliptical, or rower are all great.

As always, please consult with a physician before starting a new exercise routine. Start off at a pace that’s challenging enough for you and work your way up. Enjoy the rest of your summer and stay motivated!

Is Being Healthy All In Your Head?

By Susan Gazerro The mind plays a huge part in our physical health. Actually, the mind can have control over one’s mental and physical state.

I have to start by saying that so far, I have lived a very fortunate life. I have traveled extensively due to my previous careers. I have owned and driven very nice vehicles. I’ve been blessed to not have any major tragedies occur within my family, with the exception of my own accident, which left me on life support, however, I not only survived, but I turned my accident into something positive, and then turned my life around, so I don’t think of the accident as a tragedy at all.

I may not live as comfortably or as privileged as many others. On the other hand, I have not lived “without,” as many others do. I often question why some people are so fortunate and others so unfortunate? In my own experience, I have come to learn that life is not about what you have or don’t have. Life is about giving and having compassion for those in need. It’s about taking care of one another. It’s about making a difference in someone else’s life.

This may only lead them to feel stress. To be healthy, you need to be content with what you have and what makes up your inner thoughts. To be content is to not worry about the future and striving for only what’s necessary.

She truly knew what life was about. She spent her entire life caring for the less fortunate. Now, I understand that no matter how generous we are, or how much we help others, we will never compare to St.Teresa, but I also feel that so many people need to step back, take a look at their life, and ask themselves, am I living a life to be proud of? Am I sending my children the right message with how I live my life?

When we pass on, is what we are worried about really going to matter? We all want better for the next generation, but is it really better? Aren’t we making ourselves unhealthy, and even ill, by focusing on what’s not important? I believe that life was easier, and as a result, more enjoyable when it was simpler. Our grandparents likely had just a quarter of what we have in material items, and I believe that as a result, experienced much less stress than the current generation.

Then there’s technology. There’s no question that technology has allowed our nation to grow and to succeed on many levels, but I believe that it has also been somewhat of a detriment to the world. Social media drives many teens to become obsessive-and obsessive about all of the wrong things! People are hooked on receiving “likes” on different social media platforms. What about this makes it important to us? I get it, we all want to be liked. Needing approval is natural to human nature. But, it certainly should not be at the forefront of how we function or what drives us.

For some, success is all about achievements.

Have you ever known a company CEO who is calm, cool and collected? At the end, is what they achieved as important as the time they lost with their families? The baseball or basketball games they missed for their child? The school play where their son was counting on their attendance, only to be disappointed again and again? The disappointment on a child’s face when mom or dad missed their school spelling bee? These things are what matters so much more than the late business meeting we can’t miss so that we schmooze the company partners or the big shot clients!

We all want the nicest clothes. We want the best and fastest cars. But at what expense? If our health is the expense, or our families are being neglected, does it really matter what title we have or the amount of money we earn? I wish I could make everyone understand that what we own has nothing to do with our true happiness or purpose.

We are killing ourselves trying to attain what we have been trained to believe is most important.

What we really need is to be re-trained. We need to find a middle ground-one that will strengthen not only our physical and mental health, but even our soul.

We need to believe in something bigger than us.

Have you ever asked yourself, where has all of the years gone? It seems as though time passes even faster as we get older. For some, life may end in 70 years, but for others, it could end tomorrow. We need to stop and ask ourselves, “If I left this earth tomorrow, did I live a life that I am proud of? Did I help others to the best of my ability? Did I put others before material belongings?

Have I been grateful for life’s simple, yet joyous moments?” If you answered yes to even a few of these questions, it is likely that you are at least on the right path, you feel for others, and also feel good about yourself-and feeling good about who you are, will undoubtedly result in you living and feeling healthy.

Q: What is term insurance?

A: When you own term insurance, you pay a level premium for a defined period of time, such as 5, 10 or 20 years. During this period of time, the premiums are usually low compared to other types of insurance.

Additionally, the death benefit is payable if the insured passes away during that period of time as long as the policy is in force upon the death of the insured. In many cases, the term policy can be extended beyond the initial term years as described above. However, premiums can increase dramatically and can rise every year. Because of this, most people will cancel the policy, as there is no cash value to be paid out or they may purchase a new term period but at a higher rate because of their age.

Q: Does Medicare pay for nursing home costs?

A: It depends. When a person needs short-term rehabilitation care that is not expected to last longer than 100 days, then Medicare does pay some or all of the costs associated with that care. Specifically, Medicare pays 100% of the costs for the first 20 days of stay at a nursing home. For the remaining 80 days (days 21-100), Medicare pays for all but $164.50 per day of the costs. Keep in mind that there are restrictions that need to be met for Medicare to pay for this care. The bigger problem, however, that may seniors face today is when care is needed over a long period of time. In those cases, Medicare does not pay anything towards the cost of the care, which means these expenses often need to be covered by the individual or family.

Helping patients and CORNHOLE caregivers with the help TOURNAMENT and services they need.

Born out the need to help others as they transition into elder care and have their needs met more often, several local businesses are joining together to sponsor a Cornhole Tournament to raise awareness and funds for their organization.

Their elimination tournament event takes place on Thursday, September 12, at The Anchor Bay at Pocasset, 12 Old Pocasset Lane, Johnston. The festivities begin with food and drinks at 4:30 p.m. followed by the tournament at 5:30 p.m. Raffles, gift baskets and other activities will take place as they hope to raise further awareness of this group. This event is being sponsored by The Bridge at Cherry Hill in Johnston, Gentry Moving and Storage in Cranston and Anchor Bay at Pocasset.

Proceeds from this endeavor will benefit TLC4LTC, a not for profit organization whose intention is to provide joy and compassion to residents and staff of our skilled nursing facilities by fulfilling a special wish/need that they may have.

Jen Burns, Sales Manager at The Bridge at Cherry Hill, said the opportunity to not only get the word out about TLC4LTC while mentioning the efforts of those who help senior citizens is a continuous demand. She said while she and her group do its part to bring awareness to this topic, more work needs to be done.

“Senior citizens are often a forgotten group,” she said. The Bridge is an all-encompassing facility aiding senior citizen at various stages of their physical and mental well-being. “For those seniors who are living in assisted living facilities, they may not have family close to them, have anyone come to visit or take them out for lunch or for some other activity. This group gives them some comfort and feeling wanted.”

Lisa Ferreira, Director of Purchasing for the Providence-based Health Concepts, Ltd., said TLC4LTC works to grant wishes to patients who

are nearing the end stages of their lives. Their reach is statewide and the hope for the group is giving the people who request something to fulfill their dream, she said.

“Our group has already granted four wishes to caregivers and patients,” said Ferreira, who credits Pam Marchetti with spearheading the group.

“We had one resident who wanted to attend a Boston Red Sox Baseball game. We had one person get their life back together after a fire destroyed their home.

A third person received day care for their child after their mother passed away unexpectedly.

The child’s grandmother was caring for the child at the time. We are working on a fourth member who wants a motorcycle with a side car and play golf.”

As Ferreira mentioned, Marchetti started the group after battling breast cancer. She was impressed by the attention to care she received from her caregivers and other people. Because of those efforts, Marchetti started the TLC4LTC as a way to give back to those people helping others. The group began several years ago and has since received a 503 (c) non-profit organization designation.

TLC4LTC holds two other fundraisers in addition to the upcoming tournament. They host a wine tasting during the spring and coming up in November, they will put on a Lip Sync Battle that takes place at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln. That event will happen on Thursday, November 7, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Ferreira said she met Burns about the opportunity to promote their cause. Along with Gentry President Christine Crum and Anchor

Bay Marketing Manager Tracy Cale, they decided that the popularity of hosting an elimination tournament would be both fun and educational.

She added that the initial idea of helping others— particularly seniors—appealed to the trio.

“Many of these people are at the end stages of their lives,” Ferreira said. “They are looking to have that one last trip or one last memory of something or some place that is special to them. We are in the service of making that happen for them.”

Cornhole Tournament Tickets are $40 for a team of two, $25 for a single entrant and a suggested donation of $5 to watch the action. Event organizers are looking for individuals and local businesses to become sponsors, which start at $100. Sponsors receive event recognition.

FINDS NEW CHAIR, DIRECTION

Anderton Photography The Assembly Theatre, located on 26 East Ave., in Harrisville section of Burrillville, has been transformed into a community playhouse that have residents involved with children’s shows, well-known favorites and some new stories to be told by the actors.

All of these changes is the work of a newly founded, Patrons of the Assembly Theatre is now a 501 (c) 3, thanks to work by members of a volunteer group focused on improving the venue.

Holly Dumaine-Picard recently joined on as the group as Executive Chair after learning about the opportunity through her child who happens to attends school in town. The idea of overseeing this organization interested her because of the chance to tell stories and getting people of all ages to get involved in the arts.

“I strongly feel that kids should become immersed in the arts from an early age,” said Dumaine-Picard, who also holds a job in the corporate sector in Northern Rhode Island. “Children 58 ShopInRI

have growing minds and feeding them with opportunities such as these may spark their own imagination, and possibly put them on a career path they might not know exists for them.

That said, anyone who has the desire to learn and perform these programs is welcome to join us. They may get more out their experience then they think.”

Austin T. Levy, the 354-seat venue has historically been used as a community space, a movie theater and of course, a space for live performances. Levy established a Board of Administration to manage the theater, along with several other buildings he donated to the town of Burrillville including the current Town Hall, the town Annex and the American Legion Hall.

Built in 1933 as a gift to the town There are plenty of changes coming to by mill owner and philanthropist the Assembly Theatre. There are other

activities and acts from local artists and musicians that have added some flair to this quite country town. The theatre also received approval to serve beer and wine at certain performances.

A dedicated group of volunteers known as AssemblyACT have begun producing their own shows, with their first shows happening over the summer. There will be other local productions and artists to be gracing the stage over the next several months, according to Dumaine-Picard.

They have also brought on a new artistic director to oversee the theatrical and educational programs. Brittany Dyer has been active in the music community in R.I. and MA for many years as a teacher, singer and pianist. She serves as music director for her church in Grafton MA, where she sings, and plays organ and piano on a weekly basis.

Dyer has been a consistent Music Director at the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket, serving both for adult and children’s productions. She has also been involved with their winter, spring and summer camps for many years.

She was previously served as a choral and drama teacher at a private school in RI for several years, where she really nurtured her teaching skills and became even more in love with her trade while teaching 6-12th grade. Dyer has plans for new adventures and taking on a new music studio schedule with AssemblyACT at The Assembly Theatre in Harrisville, RI. The Assembly Theatre is actively seeking sponsors for their lineup of programs for this coming season. Sponsors receive various perks and sneak-peaks as well as other amenities.

Theatre Patrons want to partner with local, state and regional businesses and individuals who are interested in promoting the arts.

How to Save for Education Without Taking your Eye Off of Retirement It’s no secret that many American parents want to support their kids by paying for their college education. According to recent Ameriprise research, 87 percent of parents today already have paid for or plan to assist with these costs. Furthermore, 33 percent of respondents have delayed their own retirement, or plan to, in order to help their kids pay for college.1 While the choice to delay retirement to pay tuition is understandable and even admirable, the reality is doing so may not be the wisest financial decision. If you are considering how to balance saving for college and retirement, read on for some perspective.

Although it may be hard to hear, saving for retirement should take priority over college tuition. To understand why, consider the following: •

You may not get to choose your retirement date. Injury, caring for an aging parent, or a layoff are among the factors that could ultimately make the decision for you.

You don’t want to run out of money in retirement. If your savings come up short, you don’t have the ability to apply for scholarships, grants or financial aid to help bridge the gap. (Your child has access to these options to help pay for college.) Instead, your options are likely to be working longer, finding other sources of income or spending less on travel and other retirement dreams.

While it’s imperative to focus on your own financial security in retirement, funding higher education is still an important goal for many parents. The key is striking the right balance between saving for both goals. Consider the following tips as a starting point: Paying for college doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. Many parents choose to pay a percentage of the total bill, cover certain expenses (e.g. tuition, technology fees or room and board), pay for a set number of years, or contribute as much as they are able to save by the first day of school instead of funding the full cost.

Revising your college savings goal in one of these ways could allow you to direct more money to retirement.

If your child has sights on graduate school, decide whether you will contribute to those bills too. This decision is particularly important if your child needs a graduate degree before entering his or her field of choice. If you intend to provide financial support, calculate how much the total cost will be so you have a clear savings target in mind.

Discuss your intentions with your child. No matter how much you contribute, talk to your child (if and when your child is old enough) about your financial commitment so he or she knows what to expect. Discuss how your contribution will look like at

their preferred colleges. For example, if you agree to pay a set amount, perhaps this money will fully cover community college, a substantial amount at a state school, and leave a larger portion of the bill outstanding at a private college.

Breaking down the costs for your child can help him or her make an informed decision about how much student debt (or scholarships, grants, etc.) are needed to cover the bill.

No matter your financial situation, know that it is possible to make meaningful progress toward both goals, particularly if you are intentional about how to allocate your savings.

Friends Of Homeless Animals Rescuing Small Dogs With Big Hearts

Every year, thousands of animals end up in shelters for one reason or another. Some have to be surrendered because their owner loses their home and cannot find housing that allows pets.

Some are surrendered because their familiar situations have changed; some dogs are found as strays and are never reclaimed. Whatever the sad and unfortunate situation is, Friends Of Homeless

International Revenue Code. They are licensed as a class A rescue in Rhode Island.

Animals, one of the largest all volunteer rescues in New England, has made it their mission for over 35 years, to find loving homes for thousands of dogs, specifically smaller breeds. Founder, Roie Griego is still active in the organization, along with a handful of steady fosters, and 200 other volunteers. FOHA is an approved tax-exempt public charity under section 501 ( c ) (3) of the

cats, children‌ This process also increases the chance of the dog being placed with the right family the first time. While in foster care, each dog is nurtured and given proper medical attention.

Each dog is spayed or neutered before being adopted. And if for any reason once in a new home, the dog is not a good fit, they will gladly take the dog back and pursue another living

Friends Of Homeless Animals is not a shelter.

Every dog that they help is placed in a foster home. This helps the dog adjust to a new living situation, as well as to assess whether or not the dog can happily and safely live with other dogs,

situation that is better for everyone involved. In 2017, they were able to find forever homes for 1112 dogs and they hope to increase that number each year. Rescues are not only from the local people and shelters, but FOHA works closely with shelters in other states with high kill rates due to over population. Volunteers will also help with larger dogs by reaching out to other rescue groups and connecting them with who needs them.

Volunteer, Sandra Sotis, started when her family really wanted a dog, but with two small children, she just couldn’t afford it at the moment. Her decision to foster a dog was life changing. Not only was she able to get her children used to being around a dog and teach them the responsibilities of being a dog owner, but she was helping by providing a safe and loving home for an animal before they got placed in a forever home. It’s hard for animals to get adopted when they are in a shelter because of the environment they are in. People don’t get to see the animal’s true personality. Often times they are scared, and nervous, or depressed. In a home, they are laying in their own bed, mingling with other pets, playing in the yard with toys… It allows a more natural living situation and the result is a happier pet.

Sandra worked with two rescues before dedicating a big part of her life to FOHA. She even has two small rescue dogs of her own now. Rosie came from a puppy mill situation where she lived her life in a cage and was kept pregnant until she was rescued and had her last litter. Roxy is a senior and is a registered therapy dog that visits nursing homes and sits with the patients. Two dogs

rescued and living their best lives!

Friends of Homeless Animals is also part of a large rescue event that takes place twice a year once at Clark’s farm in Charlestown and another at Balise.

Over fifteen rescues from around the country bring in over 500 adoptable dogs to find their loving forever homes. The event is called Always Adopt and is run by Louise Anderson. They can be found on Facebook and at www.AlwaysAdopt.com Every weekend, you can find FOHA at a local pets store or other business doing their good deeds for those without a voice. There is a loving companion for everyone out there and FOHA can pair you up with yours. Bodhi, Stephanie, Adam & Simon (RIP)

Australian-based Adam Haar had watched a Netflix documentary called The Champions. This is the documentary about Michael Vick’s rescued fighting dogs.

Adam was so moved by this, he made the decision to apply to be a volunteer at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary here in Rhode Island. You may recognize that name in connection to Handsome Dan, one of the 22 rescued fighting dogs that won over many hearts worldwide through social media. Handsome Dan came to live in Rhode Island in 2008 through Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and was loved by everyone, especially his “Mama,” Heather Gutshall. After waiting two years, Adam was finally accepted and came to the US. At the end of his four-month volunteer position, he bought a car and planned to travel the country, even more inspired, and thinking of his next move. It was during his post volunteer adventure that he met Stephanie Georgia. Stephanie has been involved in the well-being of animals her whole life and has been doing great work through local events and her self-published Animal Print Magazine for the last 16 years.

Back in Australia, Adam was working a job that wasn’t really satisfying his need to make a difference. After

seeing that documentary, the volunteering job and the shelter, fate had brought him and Stephanie together. She had always enjoyed film and photography and Adam was a natural in front of the camera. But what were they going to do with this friendship? Together, they co-created The Kiwi K9 Project.

Kiwi is a slang term used to describe the indigenous tribes in New Zealand and it became a nickname for Adam back home. The logo symbolizes the tribal tattoos that the Kiwis would have. K9 is self-explanatory, and it sure is a project!

The two kept in touch while Adam traveled and even split the fare on tickets to regroup and work on the idea of mini-documentaries. They either collectively had the necessary equipment or they bought what they needed, and they knew how to use it. Now to put it to good use.

So far they have completed an intro video that describes the Kiwi K9 Project, a short documentary on the canine blood bank at the Ocean State Veterinary Specialists clinic, and a short documentary on Sue Parker of Dynamic Dog Training, who leads a therapy program

for inmates at the ACI using dogs to aid in recovery and work with the inmates. And then there are the adoption videos…

“Every dog has its day” is a popular saying, but every dog has a story as well. Some dogs, for one reason or another, are harder to find homes for. Maybe it’s their age, or an injury, or their breed. Adam and Stephanie set out to help these special dogs become more appealing by working with them, sometimes fostering them, and filming their playful demeanor and quirky attitudes. Hours of footage stripped down to three minutes is no easy task, but it has been proven successful in getting a few dogs into forever homes so far. Keeping the videos at three minutes long makes them easier to upload and be watched in their entirety.

Missy was a dog in Australia that the pair found a home for through their films. Gracie, who Stephanie fell in love with while fostering her, was in a shelter for 8 months and was adopted almost immediately after her video went on social media.

While Stephanie and Adam continue their quest to save as many dogs as possible, what they are asking for is a little help from the public. Following the Kiwi K9 Project on social media and sharing their videos is the least people can do, but it is a huge help in achieving what they have set out to do.

They are also in search of an established non-profit organization directly connected to the welfare of animals or film making. This will help with production and travel expenses. They have a list of places and dogs they’d like to help. One organization that Stephanie is a fan of is the Soy Dog Rescue in Thailand. She hopes to travel there to film and follow their story. Soy Dog Rescue is always in need of sponsors to fly with the dogs that get adopted, and they hope to use Kiwi K9 Project as a way to spread the word and assist them in their endeavors.

MOVIE REVIEW

Hobbs and Shaw

The Fast & Furious series has, since 2011’s Fast Five, successfully retooled itself it as a multi-billion-dollar liveaction cartoon, abandoning the street-racing formula of the 2001 hit The Fast And The Furious and its early, Vin Dieselless sequels in favor of caper and spy plots and extravagant chase scenes that pit cars against missiles, submarines, and tanks. Who could have imagined that the original film, a Point Break­-wannabe that starred Diesel as the leader of a gang of outlaw racers and the late Paul Walker as the cop who infiltrated his crew, would not only produce two decades worth of continuity-flaunting sequels (Fast & Furious 9 is due next year), but a spin-off in which the sort-of-bad guy from the fifth movie and the bad guy from the seventh team up to fight a cyborg super-soldier and save the world from a virus that liquefies internal organs?

Yes, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is extremely silly. For its first 30 or so minutes, it also manages to be fun.

Pushing the series’ escalating cheesiness even further into James Bond and sci-fi territory, it opens with Brixton Lore (Idris Elba), an evil ex-spy who’s more machine than man, attempting to hijack a sample of the aforementioned virus (codenamed “Snowflake”) in London on behalf of a shadowy organization called Eteon. Instead, it ends up in the hands— or rather, the bloodstream—of Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby), an MI6 agent who also happens to be the estranged younger sister of the ex-assassin Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham).

Framed by Brixton, Hattie goes on the run. Before long, the CIA is on the case, recruiting Shaw and his frenemy, the colossal Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), to track her down.

Butting bald heads from the moment they first come face to face in what appears to be the CIA’s most conspicuous and luxurious black site, Johnson and Statham lean hard into their established alpha-male personas as director David Leitch riffs on the big-and-little contrast, putting them side-

by-side in split screens and parallel corridors, and playing them off of Elba’s relished villainy. But while Leitch, who co-directed John Wick before striking out on his own withAtomic Blonde, has proven before that he’s capable of helming a stylish action sequence, his contributions to Hobbs & Shaw mostly amount to designer lighting, visual symmetry, and a more irreverent approach to the script.

(This includes a couple of gratuitously extended, improv-y uncredited movie-star cameos.) As in his last film, Deadpool 2, the staging of loud, destructive, effects-laden set pieces seems to elude the director’s grasp—and, unfortunately, that’s what Fast & Furious movies are all about.

The unwieldy ensemble casts of the later Fast & Furious movies were in many ways their secret weapon, allowing the films to keep switching points of view amid the increasingly ludicrous proceedings. But in Hobbs & Shaw, Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and the rest of his crew are nowhere in sight, leaving the movie with fewer options. The souped-up, eye-searing Mitsubishis, Nissans, and Hondas that were once the series’ stock in trade having finally given way to heavyduty military-industrial tech, and there are only so many times a scene can cut to Johnson pretending to drive a truck before everything starts to descend into weightless (and, by series standards, largely uninspired) mayhem. Leitch at least knows how to borrow from the best: Shamelessly cribbing from Mad Max: Fury Road in an attack-helicopter-versushot-rod chase, he even goes so far as to copy George Miller’s frenzied dolly-ins and close-ups. But the results are less than stimulating.

Which leaves that other staple of the series: scenes of characters looking into the sunset while they talk about the importance of “family.” At this point, this theme is basically a franchise obligation, and Hobbs & Shaw serves up variations for both of its heroes, with single-dad Hobbs going back to Samoa to reconnect with his family, and Shaw trying to reconnect with his sister at the behest of their incarcerated mom (Helen Mirren), a career criminal who treats prison like a retirement community. (The third Shaw sibling, Luke Evans’ Owen Shaw, goes unmentioned, but then these movies aren’t really known for their consistency.) The sincere dopiness—which climaxes with Hobbs declaring, “Brother, you may believe in machines, but we believe in people”— never sits well with the wiseass, self-mocking tone that Leitch adopts in the early, more energetic stretches of the film. The difference between being too smart for one’s own good and not being smart enough can be perilously thin.

Aruba is a small Caribbean island known for its unique and breathtaking desert-like interior landscapes and warm tropical climate.
