ian festivals,” said Palmisano, who is a third-generation feast festival promoter and a well-known local philanthropist. Our family loves the area and has been a part of this community for years. When this space (for the restaurant) was available, it was like coming home again,” he continued.
The restaurant employs a dozen people and prides itself on serving dishes with a nod to the “Old Country.” Diners can feast on several signature dishes, including their bone-in veal chops that are so big that they take up the entire plate, their linguini and clams and their Italian stuffed artichokes. Patrons can also dive into their fresh fish dishes, chicken or veal parmigiana with pasta, or perhaps for dessert, their amazingly delicious homemade cannolis.
Perhaps their calling card is their "World Famous Expresso Martinis,” among other specialty cocktails that are infused with rosemary, ginger and other herbs to give them an authentic flair and taste.
Palmisano said that his goal for operating a successful restaurant is simple: “I want people to feel like they are eating at my house.”
He noted about how meals are cultivated back in Italy. “It starts with visiting the local butcher shop for the freshest meat, then walking to the garden to select the vegetables, and maybe to the local store to pick up a bottle of wine. Palmisano said that the restaurant strives to maintain this tradition because “farm to table” offers the best quality and flavors for their customers.
Cannolis!
“I hope that when customers visit Anthony’s Italian Cuisine, they enjoy a little piece of Italy with every made-to-order dish,” he said.
The restaurant is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The bar remains open one hour after closing.

This Is the Most Popular Seat on an Airplane
Do you always gravitate toward that first row when booking your flights? You and everyone else, apparently, per a new survey from travel website Upgraded Points that shows seat 1A is the most popular seat choice for airline passengers, based on a typical Boeing 737800 plane layout. That’s a window seat, as are seats 7F and 7A, the second and third choices located in the economy section, near the bulkhead. Seats 1F (another window seat) and 7C (an aisle seat) round out the top five picks. More highlights from the survey on fliers’ preferences:
Already dreading long security lines for your next flight? There’ve long been services that allow you to cut those lines, but you’ve got to open your wallet and do a good amount of prep work for them. Now, an option for those short on funds and time: the Reserve service by Clear, a free program that allows customers to book a spot ahead of time that sends them to the front of the line at TSA checkpoints.
TravelTips
The for the
Window, aisle, or center? About 67% of the more than 3,100 US survey respondents in June said a window seat was preferable (with benefits including the view and having a place to lean against to get some shut-eye), while 32% opt for an aisle seat (more legroom, easier to move around). Meanwhile, “1.7%, for some reason, opt for the middle seat,” as Axios puts it.
The Clear site explains how the process works: In advance of your flight (how long in advance depends on the airport), you’d simply log on to make a reservation for the time you’d like to pass through security. You’ll receive a QR code that, on the day of your flight, you’ll show to a staffer in the Reserve lane near the TSA checkpoint. The service isn’t available at every airport (there are about 20 in the US, Canada, and Europe currently listed) and even at those airports, the service may be limited to certain areas. A company rep said they’re working on adding more airports into the mix.
Airlines: Those surveyed gave Delta’s seats the highest marks in terms of comfort (34%), with American and United trailing behind with about 16% each. Spirit Airlines and Sun Country Airlines, meanwhile, were rated the worst, together earning just 0.3% from respondents.
Bathroom breaks: Just 16% of those surveyed say they purposely pick seats near the restroom, with more than one-fifth claiming they just hold it until they arrive at their destination.
Reserve customers must still remove their shoes and jackets and take their electronics out for screening. Clear also offers a paid service called Clear Plus, which for the price of $189 per year allows users to not only skip to the front of the line, but also to not have to show ID; instead, your eyes or fingerprints are scanned. TSA PreCheck also offers a paid service ($78 for five years) that, because you’ve gone through advance vetting, means you don’t have to remove your shoes, jacket, laptop, or other items. Reserve remains an option for those who don’t want to pay. “Travelers can now save even more time by seamlessly reserving their spot in the security line,” a Clear rep said in a statement.
In-the-air etiquette: About 44% of fliers say passengers who recline their seats back are impolite, while 54% say it’s OK to take one’s shoes off while in the air. More than half complain about seatmates spilling over into their personal space.

Shop In RI Selects Sugarbush Resort, Vermont as their #1 Skiing Getaway on the East Coast!
Sugarbush is an overlooked gem among its peers, with many skiers heading to nearby Killington, Stowe, or Mad River Glen over this double mountain resort. So why shouldn’t you do the same? To put it simply, Sugarbush offers practically everything that those more popular ski areas boast, minus the crowds. So if you fancy schussing down a freshly groomed slope without queuing for a lift or dodging snowploughers this could be just the place for you!

There are a few food items that are synonymous with Maine, one of them being the ever-so-delicious lobster roll. Tourists have been flocking to every corner of the Pine Tree state for decades to devour the delicacy. However, not all lobster rolls are built the same. Often, the biggest complaint people have about a lobster is...not enough lobster. So, the Taste of Maine restaurant in Woolwich decided to solve that problem once and for all. Shared on Facebook by Taste of Maine restaurant, they claim to be serving the world’s largest lobster roll, a monster sub at least three times the size of a typical lobster roll. The number one question in comments seems to be about the price. Given current market conditions for lobster, the daily market price for the ’world’s largest lobster roll’ has been between $150 and $170. Some will scoff at the price, but if you’re traveling from afar just to get your hands on a Maine lobster roll, why not try the largest one?
A weekend getaway to Hampton Beach, NH, promises a refreshing escape with its classic New England charm and stunning coastal beauty. This vibrant seaside town offers a blend of sun, sand, and local flavor, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and adventure alike. Stroll along the picturesque boardwalk, where you can savor fresh seafood from charming eateries and explore quaint shops and arcades. The wide, sandy beach invites leisurely sunbathing and invigorating swims in the Atlantic, while the scenic surroundings are perfect for scenic walks and capturing beautiful sunsets. Whether you’re looking to unwind, enjoy family fun, or indulge in local cuisine, Hampton Beach provides a delightful and memorable retreat.
Fourth of July Airfare Down
We’ll Be Stuck With That TSA Liquids Rule for a While
By 27% From Last Year
Travelers who plan to fly over the Fourth of July holiday weekend can expect to pay less for their domestic tickets this year, as round trip tickets will be 27% lower this year than they were at the same time in 2022.
A round-trip ticket this year will cost a traveler a little more than $300, which is over $100 cheaper than last year. The prices of round-trip tickets are in line with how much round-trip tickets cost in 2019, according to an analysis by Hopper.
Terrain: The resort is made up of two interconnected mountains, Lincoln Peak, where the majority of trails are, and Mount Ellen. Other lower peaks include Castle Rock, Gadd Peak and North Lynx. For the type of gnarly terrain you would expect from Mad River Glen, just hop aboard the Castle Rock Double chair to Castle Rock. From the top at 3,812 ft, you’ll have the steep double black chutes of Lift Line and Rumble to get stuck into. If clocking up maximum vertical drop is more your thing then you’ll find the slopes here laid out much better for top-to-bottom shredding than at Killington. Even if you ski all 111 trails here, there’s also 2,000 ac of backcountry to explore in the Slide Brook Basin area!
That annoying airport rule about not having liquids in amounts greater than 3.4 ounces in your carry-on luggage could be eliminated, but that won’t happen any time soon. The new CT scanners can identify which liquids could be dangerous, making the 3-11 policy that has been in place since 2006 unnecessary. But a TSA rep said the paper getting to “full operational capability” across all airports in the US requires 2,200 CT machines. The TSA is about 40% of the way there, but under current funding estimates, it doesn’t expect to have them all deployed for another 18 years - until 2042.
This year, the most booked destination in the United States over the Fourth of July weekend, which is from June 30 through July 4, is Las Vegas. The domestic cities that follow include

Cruise Passengers Have Been Stuck in Port for 3 Months
a Fresh Geyser Mystery
in Yellowstone
She Became a Bride and a Widow Within Minutes
It was billed as the “cruise that will really never stop,” with nearly 150 countries on its itinerary, but apparently it’s having trouble getting started in the first place. The Villa Vie Odyssey, which was supposed to set out on May 30 for the first leg of a three-year trip around the globe, has been stuck in the same place—its launch port in the Northern Ireland capital of Belfast—for three months due to equipment issues, with its passengers stranded there as they await an eventual sail dat.
It’s the tallest active geyser on the planet— with an emphasis on “active.” From 2015 to 2017, it didn’t erupt at all. There was another largely quiet period from 1911 to 1961, but in 2018 it logged a record-setting 32 eruptions, a feat it has crushed this year with 47 eruptions, per the US Geological Survey. Why? Good question, and one that hasn’t been answered. It’s one on a long list of geyser mysteries, in fact. The geyser-research field is a thin one, and as Yellowstone National Park’s hydrologist explained the area beneath Steamboat hasn’t been mapped. However, seismic sensors there have revealed that the geyser’s water source may sit as deep as 130 feet.
Johnnie Mae had suffered two recent losses, including that of her father, when she stood in front of friends and family and committed to the love of her life on Monday. But within the hour, her groom was dead, too. As Mae and new husband Toraze Davis of Omaha, Nebraska, left the church where they said “I do,” Davis suffered a blood clot that made his heart stop. “It happened within seconds ... just after the ceremony had begun,” friend Jewel Roberson said. Family and friends are now rallying behind Mae, director of ECO Supportive Living, which assists the elderly and those with disabilities. “Johnnie Mae has suffered through so much,” says Roberson. Now “she’s been widowed and married in a 10-minute span.”

The 30-year-old vessel, originally called the MS Braemar, arrived in Belfast ahead of its May sailing to undergo some updates, but Villa Vie Residences says problems with its rudders and gearbox, and with getting the ship recertified, have pushed its maiden voyage back, per Business Insider. Passengers who’ve paid for the journey are allowed to be on board the Odyssey during the day to enjoy all of its amenities, including meals, but they must disembark at night. Villa Vie CEO Mikael Petterson has said that passengers are provided with shuttles to and from the ship, and their lodgings on land, food and drink, and excursions are covered.
“It’s seriously the saddest thing ever,” Tricia Pugsley said. She was supposed to DJ the couple’s wedding reception, but “they went to the hospital instead.” That’s where Mae “had to say goodbye to her new husband.”
Passengers have the option to buy one of the 500-plus cabins instead of paying a daily rate, with costs for such a purchase running from around $100,000 to $900,000. One couple did just that (though they’re not saying how much they forked over), and as Angela and Stephen Theriac wait for the ship to set sail, they tell the BBC they’ve traveled to other countries, including Spain, Italy, and Greenland. “We keep teasing we will apply for residency here in Belfast,” Angela Theriac says. Petterson says he expects the ship to leave port in September.
A GoFundMe page has raised more than $20,000 for Mae and the children the couple shared. Mae “always helps others; this is our time to help her,” the page reads. Some are finding solace in knowing that 48-year-old Davis died on what was evidently “the happiest day of his life,” a friend said. Another friend says she hopes the tragedy will teach others to care for themselves, including through annual
Most other geysers seem to be fueled by shallower reserves; deeper equals warmer, so that could be a factor in Steamboat’s ability to propel water to heights of more than 300 feet. Michael Poland with the USGS earlier this year said it’s possible that increased snowfall in Yellowstone of late has led to more groundwater to fuel the geyser. What scientists are saying is that there’s no link between the increased activity and any potential looming eruption of Yellowstone’s supervolcano. “Yellowstone has an incredible geyser system that is unrelated to magmatic activity—other than the magmatic system basically providing heat,” tweeted one volcanologist. USA Today noted that the Waimangu Geyser in New Zealand has managed to shoot water taller than Steamboat has, but it’s been

Gilmore Hears From Adam Sandler
The Taylor Swift economy continues to hum: Brothers Travis and Jason Kelce have signed a $100 million podcast deal with the Wondery unit of Amazon.
Their “New Heights” show - a mix of sports talk, interviews, and pop culture - had been popular in its own right, but it became a bona fide hit when Travis began dating Taylor Swift last year, per the Wall Street Journal. Travis plays for the Super Bowl champ Kansas City Chiefs, while Jason has retired as a player from the Philadelphia Eagles.
The weekly show, which will remain available on all the usual podcasting platforms, begins its third season September 4th. The Journal sees the deal as part of the latest podcasting trend in which “a few blockbuster shows are attracting the biggest audiences and the biggest advertisers.” Last month, Wondery signed Dax Shepard to an $80 million deal for his “Armchair Expert” show.

Preparing for the Future of Rhode Island’s Hospitality Industry
by Farouk Rajab President/CEO, Rhode Island Hospitality Association
government and includes collaborating closely with community leaders and other industry partners.
As the newly appointed President and CEO of the Rhode Island Hospitality Association (RIHA), I am honored to take on this role during a pivotal time for our industry. The legacy of my predecessor, Dale Venturini, who dedicated more than 35 years to RIHA, has set a high standard of leadership and commitment. Building on this foundation, my focus is navigating the challenges and harnessing the opportunities that lie ahead to ensure the strength of our industry.
We have faced unprecedented challenges in recent years, from the impact of the pandemic to ongoing labor shortages and rising operational costs. These issues have evaluated our resilience and adaptability, but they have also underscored the vital role hospitality plays in the community and economy.
One of the most pressing issues we face is the need to cultivate the next generation of hospitality leaders. Investing in education and training is key to ensuring that our workforce is equipped with the skills needed to thrive in an ever-evolving industry. By building strong partnerships with educational institutions and other stakeholders, we can create a pipeline of talent that will support the industry’s future success. This commitment to education is not just about meeting immediate needs but about laying the groundwork for a sustainable and innovative hospitality sector in Rhode Island.
Advocacy remains a cornerstone of our mission at RIHA. It is essential that we continue to safeguard the interests of small businesses and their employees, particularly when it comes to policy and legislation. We urge policymakers to engage in thoughtful discussions about the unique challenges our industry faces. Collaboration is key to ensuring that our local businesses can thrive, and that Rhode Island can become a national leader in fostering a vibrant small business environment and a robust workforce. This collaboration extends beyond
Rhode Island’s hospitality industry has incredible potential. We already boast world-class hotels and restaurants, driven by talented individuals who are enthusiastic about their craft. My vision for the future includes elevating Rhode Island’s profile as a top destination for tourists and business travelers alike. This means not only highlighting our unique cultural, lodging, and culinary offerings but also ensuring that our hospitality professionals have the framework, resources and support they need to excel.
In that vein, we should also consider innovative approaches to community engagement and cultural promotion. Supporting local festivals, food tours, and cultural events not only highlights the rich diversity and unique offerings of Rhode Island but also creates a vibrant atmosphere that attracts both residents and visitors. Encouraging collaboration between hospitality businesses and local artisans, musicians, and cultural organizations can lead to a more dynamic and inclusive industry, where everyone feels welcomed and celebrated.
As we look to the future, it is important to remember that a successful hospitality industry directly supports the broader community. Every job created, every business supported, and every visitor attracted contributes to the economic health and vibrancy of our state. I encourage you all to support local businesses and be part of our mutual journey towards a brighter future.
Together, we can overcome any challenge and build a stronger, more resilient industry that benefits everyone in Rhode Island. I am optimistic about what lies ahead and look forward to meeting it head on by working with all of you to achieve these goals. Let us embrace the future with confidence, creativity, and a commitment to excellence.

A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical
is coming to Providence this month, and the production will be the 23rd national tour to open at the Providence Performing Arts Center since 2008. The dates for A Beautiful Noise at PPAC will be September 21-28, and if you’re any kind of fan of Neil Diamond and his music, this is a must-see event. Most everyone, no matter what generation, knows at least one of his songs. He has performed in Providence many times through the years, and now that he has retired, this may be the last chance for audiences to experience his music in a live venue.
‘Beautiful Noise’ was the title of Diamond’s tenth studio album, released in 1976, as well as the title of a charting single on the album that is reflective and autobiographical in nature, lending itself as the perfect title for a musical about his life.
Like Jersey Boys and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, that came before, A Beautiful Noise is an inspiring, exhilarating, energy-filled musical memoir. It is the story of a Brooklyn kid, Neil Diamond (yes, that is his real name), who makes it big, becoming a chart-busting, show-stopping superstar. From those exhilarating early days in New York to the sold-out spectacles that defined Diamond’s career, the musical explores the life of a rock icon through the music that made him a national treasure and features all his hit songs. including “Sweet Caroline,” “America,” and “Cracklin’ Rosie.
The show had its world premiere at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston in June 2022, with Diamond and his wife, Katie, attending. In late 2022, A Beautiful Noise opened on Broadway. The show began previews on November 2, 2022 at the Broadhurst Theatre and formally opened a month later on December 4, with Diamond leading an unannounced sing-along of “Sweet Caroline” on opening night. The show’s producers announced in February 2024 that A Beautiful Noise would end its
Broadway run on June 30, 2024. Now, the multi-year North American tour of A Beautiful Noise kicks off the this fall with a week of show dates at PPAC.
J.L “Lynn” Singleton, President and CEO of the Providence Performing Arts Center, said, “PPAC is thrilled to launch this spectacular new tour. Our subscribers and audience members love being the first in the country to see some of Broadway’s hottest tours before they head out across America—and we know that the response for A Beautiful Noise will be so good (so good, so good) in Providence.”
A Beautiful Noise has been described as a jukebox musical based on the life and music of Neil Diamond. The musical is structured around a series of therapy sessions during which Diamond reacts to his lyrics as they are read by his psychiatrist from a secondhand copy of The Complete Lyrics of Neil Diamond. When the psychiatrist opens the book, sixty years of Diamond’s life and music comes pouring out into a musical collage, and once unloosed from the book, the songs take on lives of their own.
Producer Ken Davenport said, “Neil is one of the best live entertainers the world has ever seen. In his fifty-year career, he’s performed for millions of fans around the globe. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect way to honor his legacy than having A Beautiful Noise touring North America, visiting the same cities where he gave so many people so much joy. I look forward to launching the tour in Providence, Rhode Island, a city that has been in love with Neil’s music for decades and where Neil himself performed almost a dozen times.”
Fans are encouraged to visit abeautifulnoisethemusical.com to sign up for the email newsletter and be among the first to receive tour news and updates.

September: A Fresh Start for Health & Fitness

meals. Incorporating seasonal produce into your diet, not only enhances nutrition, but also adds variety, making healthy eating more exciting and sustainable.
Setting Realistic Goals
As the days shorten and the air cools, the end of summer often brings a mix of nostalgia and anticipation. While the season of beach trips, outdoor barbecues, and long, sunny days is coming to a close, this doesn’t mean your fitness journey has to slow down. In fact, the transition from summer to fall presents a unique opportunity to reinvigorate your commitment to staying active and healthy. Here’s how to keep your fitness momentum going as the seasons change.
Embrace Outdoor Activities
As summer winds down and the kids head back to school, September presents a unique opportunity to reset and refocus on health and fitness goals. The transition from the leisurely days of summer to the structured routine of fall, provides an ideal backdrop for adopting new habits and setting fresh objectives. Here’s why September is the perfect time for a health and fitness reboot, and how to make the most of it.
The Back-to-School Effect
The beginning of the school year brings a sense of renewal and organization. With the kids settling into their routines, parents can also establish their own schedules, incorporating regular exercise and healthier eating habits. The predictable rhythm of school days can be leveraged to create a consistent workout routine, making it easier to stick to fitness goals.
Cooler Weather, Better Workouts
September’s cooler temperatures are a welcome change from the sweltering heat of summer, making outdoor activities more enjoyable. Whether it’s jogging in the park, hiking, or cycling, the milder weather encourages more physical activity. It’s also a great time to explore new outdoor fitness activities that might have been too uncomfortable during the peak of summer.
Seasonal Produce for Better Nutrition
Fall is a bountiful season for fresh produce, offering a variety of fruits and vegetables that are both nutritious and delicious. Apples, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, andx squash are in abundance, providing the perfect ingredients for healthy
September is a great time to set realistic and achievable health and fitness goals. With the holiday season still a few months away, there’s ample time to make significant progress. Start with small, manageable changes, such as increasing daily physical activity, cutting back on processed foods, or drinking more water. As these habits become ingrained, gradually introduce more challenging goals.
Family Involvement
The back-to-school season can also be a time for family fitness. Encourage your children to participate in physical activities and healthy eating. Plan family hikes, bike rides, or even backyard games. Involving the whole family in health and fitness, not only fosters a supportive environment, but also sets a positive example for children, teaching them the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

As someone who has been there and done that, I know what it’s like to be on the road for days, and even weeks, on end. Trying to eat healthy, work out, and get enough sleep can be another full-time job. My certifications keep me bouncing all over the place. I can be in Japan for a week, then back in the states, and then in Mexico the next week. The climates are different, the time zones are different, and the food is definitely different.

There are some real simple ways to stay in shape on the road, with little or no equipment. Let’s explore a few of my favorites.

Bodyweight - Since the dawn of mankind, humans’ best piece of equipment has been their own bodyweight. Calisthenic exercises are tried and true and have been tested for centuries. Your own body is always available to you, at all hours of the day, every day. You don’t have to bring anything with you. You wake up and get it done. That’s the tough part, however - getting it done. Once you start moving, it can turn into a ‘slam dunk.’ The key is to have a set plan. Now, with all of the available apps (burnwithkearns.com being one of them), you have limitless resources for exercising. Make time, not excuses.

Resistance bands - These have been my go-to for at least 15 years. My all purpose bands have been traveling the globe with me, from Japan to the UK and back. For 25 bucks, they are a great investment. Whether it’s in your hotel room, a quad, or on a beach, find a place where you can get a great workout in a short period of time. The versatility of the bands are truly impressive. Just about every exercise in the gym can be mimicked with a band.

Slide disks -Who knew that someone would take something that moves furniture and turn it into a workout tool that is seriously flexible, portable, userfriendly, and priced affordably? They may not look like they can be helpful, until you start using them. For the core, upper body, and legs, they are truly helpful and can put you into very functional positions that are easily performed in an apartment or hotel room. I have personally carried mine around the globe and back. Additionally, when it’s nasty outside, they are a great back up and they don’t make any noise like similar products do.

Stability ball- With the ball deflated and a hand pump, this takes up as much room as a pair of pants. It might be a little bit of a hassle for some, but it’s a great tool to have with you when traveling. From working your entire body and core, to flexibility, it can be a go-to piece in your arsenal kit.

but I’m not putting my hands on the floor of any hotel room. Yoga is one one of the oldest forms of exercise known to man, estimated to have been around for between 25,000 and 50,000 years. In addition to the strength and flexibility benefits, it is the total mind/body immersion that includes breathing, balance, and focus. The best part about meditation is that you can do it at any location. I have been known to meditate in my hotel room or at poolside, while on the road. In California, it’s commonplace to perform yoga or workout anywhere you want.

Agility ladders - These do not take up as much room as you may think. For cardio, lower body, balance, endurance, and overall fitness, it’s one of the best investments you’ll ever make. Besides working the lower body, you can also perform some real intense core and upper body drills with this kit. It’s great to take it out to a quad and just make up your own drills.

When traveling to Ireland, I found that there was definitely an abundance of eggs, fish, and chicken. So poached eggs were always an option for me. In Japan, fish was always present and in abundance. It’s not uncommon for some cultures to eat fish for breakfast. So when in Japan, I actually came to enjoy eating fish as my first meal of the day.

Drink plenty of water - Yes, I know you have heard it said many times, but it’s so critical that I’m going to make my first tip. You need to stay hydrated. Flying will dehydrate you and the stress of traveling will, as well. In addition, if you become dehydrated, 1 percent your productivity goes down by 10 percent.

Suspension trainers - One of my two favorites are the Purmotion Airfit and the Ko 8. The amount of drills and skills you can do with these is truly limitless. They also take up little to no room in your suitcase and can be used in your hotel room or at any park near your hotel.

Sleep - Sleep is essential, but I will admit that it’s difficult to get sound sleep while on the road, but you need to try and keep a regular cycle as much as possible to be at your very best.

Meditate - I’m a huge fan of meditating daily, and on the road, it’s on the top of my list, whether I’m flying or in my room. It enables the body and mind to wind down and to stay relaxed while working crazy hours, and it’s helpful with time changes, as well.

Being on the road can be a real hassle, there’s no doubt about that. Now that you have some fitness tips and kits, let’s discuss food options that will help to keep you healthy, when on the road. What I do is to try to maintain what I normally do at home. I basically stick to protein and veggies, with some carbs when I workout. In the states, it’s pretty easy to find food that’s healthy, just about anywhere. Overseas, however, you might have some challenges with different cultures and food types.

Take some private time - I always find an hour or two each day to explore my surroundings and the culture of where I am visiting. I also always make it a habit to spend time with my host and the people who are the reason for my visit. It extends my sphere of influence and you can never have enough friends, especially ones from other cultures.

Stay connected with home - Make sure you reach out to your family or significant other, regularly. Feelings of being homesick or lonely can cloud your thinking. Stay connected and communicate what’s happening to keep that bond strong, between yourself and your loved ones.

Dynamic Thoughts

Summer is coming to an end as we head into the fall months. With the hectic scheduling and running around coming to a close, it’s the perfect time to get back into a routine to maintain our bodies or get them back into gear before we head into the winter.
This is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. It takes roughly 21 days to form one new habit. Slowly establishing a routine now will give you enough time to be ready for the winter holidays. If you wait until November, it’s too late.
Here is an example of what you can do to get yourself into a healthy routine.
Start by changing one habit every two weeks and building on it every time you hit the twoweek mark. For example, if your goals for this new routine are to exercise three times a week, eat healthier, and get better sleep, then it would be easier to break it down instead of doing it all at once.
Week 1-2 Set a regular bedtime and wake time during the week. (Mine is 10pm to bed, wake up 530am).
Week 3-4 Get to the gym for 6:15am 3 days a week, maybe MWF schedule. On days you don’t go, you still wake the same time, knock out some chores or things that take up a lot of mental bandwidth as you are at your freshest in the morning.
Week 5-6 While maintaining the sleeping and exercise habits, switch to having only 3-4 cheat meals a week (it’s easier to make healthy choices when you try to eat the same thing every day for breakfast and lunch; that way, you don’t have to think about it. Utilize easy meal preps on the weekend).
Week 6-7 Keep maintaining the above habits and move to having only 1-3 cheat meals a week.
Week 8-9 Move to 1 cheat meal a week while maintaining all your other newly acquired habits.
Now you can see how you utilized an entire 2-3 months to establish your goal but broken down in bite-sized pieces to stay on track.

Fall Workouts
By: Susan Gazerro
When the weather starts changing and the days become shorter, some people find it harder to stay motivated to workout. Following are a few activities and ideas you can try that can help you stay fit and focused with the change of seasons.
A few fun activities you can do outdoors to help you stay active are apple picking, navigating a corn maze, hiking, or cycling. Activities like these offer short bursts of intensity and keep you moving. Apple picking requires overhead stretching, as well as twists and extra walking. A corn maze might inspire you to sprint through or walk at a fast pace. Hiking will definitely get some extra steps in, and you will probably meet a hill, which will require some quad and glute work. Cycling is just an overall great cardio workout, and you can cycle for hours, enjoying the scenery.
Changing up your routine by getting different types of motion than you normally do at the gym, can improve fitness, overall, since you’re using different muscle groups. Plus, being outdoors gives you an additional mental health boost.
Fall is also a great time to run. Many cities have “fun runs” you can try. There are turkey trot runs around Thanksgiving. There are color runs, leaf runs, many 5k races, etc. Most races offer a walk option, and most have post music celebrations and award ceremonies. Fall is a great time to start running, if you have always wanted to try it. It’s the perfect weather for running, as it is not too hot or too cold.
Working out should be fun. It should not be thought of as being a chore. Dancing is a form of exercise. Some benefits of dancing can be lowering your cholesterol, improving your balance and strength, and dancing can even boost your selfesteem. There was a study done, where women noticed these benefits, after just four weeks of dancing. Dancing is also social, and being social is just as important as being physical, for your overall health.
As I mentioned, it might be more of an effort to exercise, as the evenings get longer and winter approaches. Maybe, instead of those high intensity
workouts, think about practicing yin yoga or pilates. You might be surprised at the workout you get doing yoga and pilates. Yin Yoga, specifically requires you hold poses a bit longer than a regular yoga class. These poses are held anywhere between three and five minutes. This actually gives you time to clear your mind. This is a win/win because you can relax, but at the same time, you are strengthening your muscles. Pilates is also a way to relax and get a great core workout.
Home gardening tasks like raking leaves or planting flowers for spring, also forces you to move in different ways. Every move requires muscle movement, and if you are doing something you’ve never done, you are working different muscle groups. I have also always said that change is needed to see results. You can’t keep doing the same thing over and over and expect change. These home activities are actually sporadic bursts of exercise, and are pretty intense. Raking, cleaning the house, carrying the groceries, and walking up and down the stairs, are all great forms of exercise. All the above forms of exercise are beneficial because adding even just a few minutes a day can improve cardiovascular function, regulating blood sugar, and lowering the risk for type 2 diabetes. This is especially true for people who are sedentary most of the day.
Strength training is another form of exercise, and this doesn’t require a lot of time. Strength training can be very efficient, and just a few sessions a week can make a difference for helping you feel stronger. Most people
associate strength training with building muscle or being a bodybuilder. You do not have to use heavy weights when strength training. When you do this form of exercise, you are activating your muscles, and your muscles stay active for an average of up to two days, depending on your size, height, and weight. When your muscles are activated, you are burning fat. Cardio is great, but cardio only burns fat for the period in which you are doing it. Strength training, again, continues to burn fat. I will say, as I have in many articles, cardio is a must, because it is the only way to work the heart muscle.
Regardless of the season, you need to keep moving. If you do not exercise regularly, maybe use this fall as your starting point. Think of it as doing something good for you!
“Autumn is a gentle reminder that changes can be beautiful.”
Make this autumn, the season and time to change yourself. Do it for you!

Alzheimer’s Association Rhode Island Chapter: Taking Steps to ENDALZ
By Mark Berger
The Alzheimer’s Association/ Rhode Island Chapter is proactive in helping the community through education, events and advocacy.
More than seven million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States. There are more than 11 million family members and friends providing care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In Rhode Island, there are more than 24,000 people living with the disease and 39,000 caregivers.
that there are more advances happening with each passing day.
“What has been developed in the last 10-15 years has enabled people to live longer lives when signs are detected early,” said McGowan, who took over as executive director 15 years ago. “The Alzheimer’s Association has chapters nationwide; Rhode Island has one chapter, with seven employees. When someone calls from our (401) area code, they will speak to a Rhode Island representative.”
Here are a few examples of the outreach the Alzheimer’s Association pursues:
• A free, 24/7 helpline to call with any question about dementia, and to schedule a one-on-one care consultation. They can be reached at 800272-3900.
• Offering no-cost education classes. Courses range from the “10 Warning Signs,” to help you understand when to take your memory concerns to a doctor, or to a class called “Effective Communications,” that assists caregivers with tips and tricks to communicate with someone living with dementia.
• The Association also provides professional training, and teaching classes for employees of companies, incorporating facts about how Alzheimer’s affects the workforce. To learn more about programs and support groups, you can go to www.alz.org/crf.
• They have robust advcacy efforts, both statewide and locally, with advocates and ambassadors sharing stories with lawmakers, to effect change.
• The Alzheimer’s Association is the largest nonprofit funder of research in the world. They are presently funding four Rhode Island researchers to the tune of $1.5 million.
• Money raised through events like the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” helps fund their helpline, their education programs, and critical research, to get closer to new treatments and a cure.
• Volunteers are the heart of their organization. Anyone may get involved with fundraising through the Walk to End Alzheimer’s or The Longest Day. You could become a support group leader or community educator, an advocate, help with their diversity initiatives, and more.
• The Longest Day is a one-time, do-it-yourself fundraiser. It is held to honor caregivers who have the longest day every day. It is based around the longest day of the year, June 21, but can take place any day of the year. Do what you love: hold a bake sale, go for a hike, have a cookout, do yoga, hold a music livestream; the possibilities are endless. Visit www.Alz.org/thelongestday for more details.
The Alzheimer’s Association, Rhode Island Chapter, is inviting families from all over the state to join the fight to end this disease by taking part in one of five Walk to End Alzheimer’s events, in 2024.
Executive Director Donna McGowan said
September 8th: Block Island, Fred Benson Beach
September 21st: Westerly, Misquamicut State Beach
September 22nd: Newport, Fort Adams State Park
September 28th: Northern Rhode Island, North Scituate Village
September 29th: Providence, Roger Williams State Park
McGowan said that the events bring together people, to help fight a common cause.
“The Providence Walk has between 3,000 and 4,000 participants. Newport has over 1,000 people attending, and the others each have hundreds attending. They form teams, or come by themselves, to raise money for additional research, programs, education, and advocacy. Our events are free (except for educational credits and certifications), and any community support is always accepted,” McGowan said.
Held nationally in more than 600 communities across the country, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness, and provides funding for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. On Walk day, people honor those affected by Alzheimer’s and all other dementias, with the poignant “Promise Garden” ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies solidarity, while fighting this disease.
“This is an exciting time in that we now have two FDA-approved treatments for those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a great place to share experiences, resources, and see that you are not alone in navigating this disease,” McGowan said.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place in five locations across Rhode Island this September. The walks in Rhode Island hope to raise $800,000 this year.
Be a part of “Generation Hope!” Either start a team, join a team, or walk as an individual. Dayof registration for four of the walks is at 8:30 am. The Promise Garden ceremony begins at 10am, followed by the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Registration for the Block Island Walk is set for 11am, with the ceremony starting at 12 noon.

Peter Brown of eXp Realty in Cranston has some advice for those wanting to pursue the real estate market. He says that it can seem daunting, especially if you don’t have a lot of money saved. However, he outlines several strategies that can help you get started, with little to no money down.
By: Carrie McPherson
“Whether you’re looking to buy your first home or invest in rental properties, here are some creative ways to make your real estate dreams a reality,” Brown offered.
Some options include:
1. Owner Financing: A Direct Path to Ownership
One of the most straightforward ways to buy a property, with little money down, is through owner financing. In this scenario, the seller acts as the lender, allowing them to make payments directly to them, instead of going through a bank. He said that this option works if you have trouble qualifying for traditional financing, as the terms are often more flexible.
“By negotiating with the seller, you might be able to secure a property with a minimal down payment—or even none at all,” Brown said. “Why would a seller want to seller finance? The main reason a seller would want to do this is if they do not want to pay full capital gains when they sell the property. They end up paying less in taxes, but ultimately, they make more money from the sale, due to interest collected over time.”
2. Lease Option (Rent-to-Own): Live Now, Buy Later.
Another viable strategy is the lease option, commonly known as “rent-to-own.” This
arrangement allows you to lease a property, with the option of purchasing it later. A portion of your rent payments typically goes toward the purchase price, helping you build equity, over time. This approach is particularly beneficial if you need time to improve your credit score, or save for a down payment, while already living in the home you intend to buy.
“This is also a good option, but sometimes hard to find a seller willing to do this. You won’t know if they are open to this option unless you ask,” Brown said.
3. Partnerships: Team Up to Break In!
This is probably the best option if you lack the capital to buy property yourself. Consider partnering with someone who has the necessary funds and knowledge about the market you wish to invest. In this arrangement, you contribute your time, effort, and management skills, while your partner provides the financial backing. Profits from the property are then shared between both parties. This strategy not only minimizes your financial risk, but also allows you to leverage the resources of others, to get started in real estate.
“If you don’t know any investors, or people with money to help get you started, then I would advise finding a real estate meet-up in your area. If you would like help finding some good meet-ups, please feel free to call me, and we can connect to help you get started,” Brown said.
4. House Hacking: Live for Free.
This is one of the most common and very effective methods, when starting to invest. House hacking is a popular method for those looking to minimize their living expenses, while investing in real estate. The idea is simple: purchase a property with multiple units, live in one unit, and rent out the others. The rental income from tenants can cover your mortgage, effectively allowing you to live for very little, for free, or even generate additional income. This strategy helps you build equity, while reducing or eliminating your housing costs.
“It will also keep your down payment low, as it is typically not considered an ‘investment’ property since you live there,” Brown explained.
5. FHA Loans: Accessible Financing for First-Time Buyers
This is probably the most common way for investment beginners. For first-time homebuyers, FHA loans
offer a practical solution, with low down payment requirements. These government-backed loans allow you to put down as little as 3.5% of the purchase price. If even this is a stretch, you can use gifts from family, or apply for down payment assistance programs, to cover the cost. FHA loans also come with more lenient credit score requirements, making them accessible to a wider range of buyers.
6.
Private Money Lenders: Alternative Financing Options
Private money lenders, or “Hard Money” lenders, offer another route to purchasing property without traditional financing. These lenders can be individuals such as friends, family, or investors, who provide funds for your real estate purchase. The terms are often more flexible than those of banks, but tend to require a little more money down. This is typically a temporary loan, while the property is being renovated. After renovations, the owner (you) would do what’s called a “cash out refinance”—and in theory—get your money back (or most of it), and refinance the property with a traditional bank at a lower rate, now that the property has been rehabbed and is worth more. Brown notes that this can be excellent if you have a strong network and a solid investment plan.
7. Using a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC): Leverage What You Already Own.
If you already own a home, a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) can provide the funds you need to buy additional properties. This method is disregarded by many people, and they may not realize that the equity in their current property may help them acquire more properties.
“By borrowing against the equity in your existing home, you can access cash for a down payment, or even cover the entire purchase. This approach allows you to expand your real estate portfolio, without selling your current property,” Brown said.
8. Down Payment Assistance Programs: Help Is Out There.
Many local, state, and federal programs offer down payment assistance to first-time homebuyers. There have been several down payment assistance programs over the last year in Rhode Island. Right now, Rhode Island offers up to 5% of the purchase price (depending on credit, property, and terms), which can essentially mean $0 out of pocket to buy a home. Some municipalities, like Cranston, Warwick, Providence, and Woonsocket, have additional grants
that can be used to further reduce your out-of- pocket expenses to purchase a home. These programs provide grants or low-interest loans to help cover your down payment and closing costs, making it easier to purchase a home, with little to no money upfront. It’s worth researching the options available in your area, as these programs can significantly reduce the financial barriers to homeownership.
Again, if you would like more information on how to utilize these programs please reach out to learn more.
9. The BRRRR Strategy: Recycle Your Investment.
The BRRRR strategy—Buy, Rehab, Rent, Refinance, Repeat—is a popular method for building a real estate portfolio, with minimal upfront investment. The process involves buying a property below market value, rehabbing it to increase its worth, renting it out, and then refinancing it, based on its new, higher value. The goal is to pull out most or all of your initial investment, allowing you to reinvest in another property, and then, repeat the process. This method is commonly used in conjunction with hard money loans.
Conclusion
While buying real estate with little to no money down requires creativity and careful planning, these strategies demonstrate that it’s possible to enter the market even with limited funds. By leveraging the right approach and being resourceful, you can begin building your real estate portfolio and move closer to financial independence.
“With these strategies in mind, you’re well on your way to starting your real estate journey. Remember, each approach requires careful consideration of the risks and rewards, so be sure to do your homework and seek professional when buying real estate.
“If you would like more information on any of these strategies, or would like any other information on the housing market in Rhode Island or Massachusetts, please reach out to me. Helping people build wealth through real estate is my passion and mission,” Brown said.

Got a Kid in Sports? Here’s How to Handle the Mounting Costs
By: Edward Pontarelli Jr.
Anyone with kids enrolled in sports knows the cost of participation can be quite high. Whether money is needed for new equipment, fees, or transportation getting to and from games and practices, the expenses quickly add up. Here are some things you can do to manage the financial impact.
Evaluate the goal of sports in your family. Every family has a unique relationship with sports. Understanding the place that sports has in your family and the goal it serves is a good place to start when determining how athletics will impact your finances. Is the goal of childhood athletics for your child to have fun or try something new? Is your child showing enough interest and talent to potentially pursue a scholarship or play in college? Understanding the goal can right size the cost you are willing to incur. For example, you may be more willing to pay for specialized equipment for your high schooler who is deeply passionate about basketball versus your 4th grader who may be trying it for the first time. Try balancing spending with your child’s interest and skills to ensure you are allocating an appropriate amount of money to athletics.
Set priorities. As a family, determine the importance of prioritizing athletic expenditures in the context of your other goals. Think about the amount of money you are comfortable putting toward athletics while also reflecting on the savings you would like to put toward other goals like family vacations and saving for college and retirement. Families with multiple kids may have each child pick one sport to focus on each season or select a singular camp to attend instead of saying yes to all opportunities. Prioritizing can mean having a conversation with your children about how you will support athletic opportunities. If your child has the talent or interest in attaining a college scholarship, have an age-appropriate conversation about the probability of achieving that goal and what it will take financially to make that happen. There is no denying that the cost of athletics can be steep, but putting thought behind what expenses are worth incurring is financially wise.
Budget for the most common expenses. Expenses can generally increase as your child gains age and expertise. Consider the common costs associated with participation in a sport and factor these into your budget: initial equipment, uniforms, training camps and travel. As your child ages, keep in mind the cost of middle school and high school sports can increase to accommodate further transportation to games and team bonding events. Be proactive in understanding and planning for the current and futures costs of athletics.
Prepare for the unexpected. No one wants to think about their child being injured, but it is necessary to plan for the possibility. Consider the potential impact financially if your child is injured and needs health care – which could include everything from physical therapy to more comprehensive care. Review your health care coverage to see how it applies to walkin treatment, emergency care and preventive costs. Broken bones, sprained ankles and repetitive stress injuries happen, and you’ll want to be prepared for any out-of-pocket expenses. This is even more important if your child plays a contact sport.
Many children learn valuable life lessons from participating in sports throughout their childhood. If participation in athletics is important to you or your child, take some time to consider the associated costs. A financial advisor can help budget for the expected and unexpected expenses of childhood sports, while making sure that you stay on track to meet your other goals.
Tips for Talking with Your Partner About Money
By Carrie McPherson
Money can often be a hard topic to bridge if you’re in a relationship. Depending on your financial situation, values and experiences with money, you and your spouse or significant other may not always be on the same page when it comes to spending, saving and investing. In some cases, this disconnect may even be a source of tension between partners.
As a financial advisor who has worked with hundreds of couples, I want you to know that communication is key – and it usually gets easier with practice. If you’ve found yourself avoiding the subject of money with your spouse or partner, keep these tips in mind to open up a productive and ongoing conversation that will help you work toward your shared goals for the future.
Prioritize putting a plan in place. Make it a priority to discuss the important financial aspects of your lives and put a financial and estate plan in place. If you’ve put planning on the back burner, you’re not alone. The Ameriprise Couples, Money & Retirement study found that over half (52%) of couples surveyed did not have an estate plan, and 41% did not have a financial plan in place. Delaying the conversation can impede future goals and your ability to navigate potential unexpected situations.
To get started, pick a mutually agreed upon time to sit down when you can be free of distractions. Set an agenda to cover topics such as budgeting, goals, roadblocks and opportunities. Discuss what next steps for cementing a plan might be.
Respect your histories. Each person’s relationship to money is very personal. For example, some individuals who grew up with limited financial resources may adopt a scarcity mindset to protect themselves. For these individuals and others, spending may cause anxiety. On the other side of the coin, if you never had to worry about money, you may not have learned how to set limits on yourself. Self-awareness paves the way to change, just as sharing these insights with one another can enable accountability and understanding.
Be honest about financial mistakes. Share your financial challenges, or where you may have fallen short of your goals and any lessons learned. Maybe you missed a payment deadline. Or you are procrastinating meeting with a tax attorney. In any case, it’s not unusual to make financial missteps now and again. Just as honesty is critical to your relationship, it’s also key to avoiding future costly errors.
Review your financial goals and priorities. What do you want to accomplish financially? Has anything changed over time? Buying a house, starting a family, sending kids to private school or college, opting for early retirement—these are the kinds of life goals that require active financial resolve and alignment with your partner. As a starting point, communicate openly about your dreams for the future and desired timeframes. If the conversation seems daunting, take heart in the fact that Ameriprise’s recent research revealed that 91% of couples surveyed say they share the same financial values. When you’re both invested in the outcome, you can support and motivate one another to reach your goals.
Work with a financial advisor. Whether you’ve already found financial harmony or want help blending your different perspectives, a financial advisor can help you increase communication and develop a plan to reach your goals. In fact, the Ameriprise research study found that 97% of couples that work with an advisor have identified ways their advisors have improved their financial wellbeing. Make it a priority to meet with or find your financial advisor together, so both of you have equal opportunity to ask questions and be involved in any decisions about your future. Find an advisor to be on your team as you work toward achieving a lifetime of financial happiness.

Customers also seem to be enjoying the Momand-Pop feel provided by Shane and Alissa, who prioritize customer service.
“We don’t look at customers as just another number or purchase, we want to help guide them through the process, as this is a big purchase for most people,” Shane said.
Ocean State Appliance offers a wide array of household appliances, including kitchen ranges, dishwashers, refrigerators, microwaves, washers, dryers, air conditioners, and grills, in all varieties and brands. They meet every Wednesday morning from 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM at the Home2Suites Hilton on Douglas Pike (Rte. 7) in Smithfield, across from Laura’s Bar and Grill. Can Vinyl Siding Be Painted?
My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www. LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting.com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column!
With a question that seems almost counterintuitive on the surface, we receive numerous calls every year, asking if vinyl siding can be painted.
If vinyl siding one’s home is meant to eliminate (or at least dramatically reduce) maintenance, then why would someone want to entertain painting it?
There are actually many reasons.
One reason is that perhaps the person whose home it is had inherited the vinyl siding to some degree and never liked the color, but did not think that it could be painted.
Another reason is that someone falls in love with the home during the buying process, loves everything except the color, and is bummed because the siding is vinyl, and they are not sure if it can be painted.
Yet still, another reason is that someone has lived in their home for decades, and the vinyl siding is a bit faded (which is wholly conceivable if the home was vinyl sided well before the much more color retentive vinyl siding products of today!).
Regardless of the reasoning, the answer is a simple ‘Yes,” as to whether vinyl siding can be painted…the challenge, however, is painting it correctly, so that there are no subsequent problems down the line.
When deciding to paint vinyl siding, the most critical component of any paint system applied is the prep process. Certainly, the vinyl siding should be properly cleaned. After cleaning, the surface should be dry and free from as much “chalking” as possible.
Once these conditions are satisfied, the next step is to make sure the correct ‘bonding primer’ is applied. If this step is not done properly, this could spell disaster later on, as subsequent coatings could start to peel in “sheets” if the correct bond does not exist between the finish coat system that is applied, and the vinyl surface that is being painted.
Upon successful application of the bonding primer, the finish coat can now be applied.
A ‘vinyl-safe’ finish coat should be utilized. If there are any questions as to whether a product or specific color is okay to use on vinyl siding, the best bet would be to consult with your local
paint supplier, from where the product is being purchased.
Both the bonding primer & finish coat should be applied using a ‘sprayed application,’ preferably with an airless paint sprayer (utilizing a brush to ‘cut-in,’ where necessary, and obviously, making sure that all surrounding surfaces are properly protected).
Because of the variety of nuances involved, painting vinyl siding is super tricky and is accomplished with best results, when being done by an experienced professional.
An important note is to make sure that after all products have been applied and given the chance to thoroughly dry, someone goes around the home and ensures that each & every seam where the vinyl comes together is “freed up,” and that there are no paint-oriented products, which are going to prevent the natural expansion & contraction of the vinyl siding, itself.
Painted vinyl siding, if done properly, should have an almost infinite time-period associated with it, in terms of when it will need to be done again, as paint products on vinyl are not nearly as susceptible to peeling as they are on wood products, and the color retention of paint products on vinyl today, vastly supersedes that of those previously available on the marketplace.
If you are contemplating having your vinyl sided home painted, I would not let the naysayers influence you.
For if done properly, the results may be more beautiful and long-lasting than many folks would ever imagine possible!

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THIS ON YOUR OWN.
A hot pan left unattended on the stove started a fire that not only destroyed the kitchen pictured above, but also spread toxic smoke, sticky soot, and other residues throughout every room in the house. A furnace puffback at another property belched smoke and soot throughout the home via its air duct system, coating walls, ceilings, floors — just about everything inside — with oily, black grime.
Almost as bad as the flames from a fire, smoke, soot, and other toxic residue left behind by these types of property disasters need to be cleaned away quickly before even more damaging effects can develop.
Eliminating smoke and soot residue is one of the most difficult aspects of disaster restoration and to safely minimize further damage, these substances must be strictly handled by specially trained restoration professionals, like Rhode Island Restoration.
Expertly trained in soot and smoke removal as well as water damage and full building reconstruction and repair, both homes were quickly and thoroughly cleaned and then fully restored to their pre-disaster conditions within weeks — much to the relief of the grateful homeowners. Rhode Island Restoration — Ready. Rapid. Reliable.

Summertime is often seen as “vacation time” because children are out of school for several months, parents take time off for work to enjoy the weather and work usually (but not always) slows down until the fall. Once fall hits, it becomes an optimal time to start thinking about where to travel to next. It could range from a family destination trip to a romantic weekend getaway. The choices are only limited by one’s imagination.
Erica Davies of the North Kingstown-based A Well Traveled Soul provides clients with memorable experiences and a smooth process in which to plan their trip.
Davies established her business in June 2022. She enjoyed traveling growing up and has made it her purpose in her professional endeavors.
“In my early twenties, I learned a valuable life lesson: life is short, and we should fill every day with experiences that nourish the soul,” she said. “That’s how The Well Traveled Soul got its name—born from the idea that everyone deserves those soul-filling moments, especially through travel. The world is vast, and life is fleeting, so let’s make the most of it!”
The Well Traveled Soul offers full-service, concierge-level travel planning for busy professionals and families. Clients turn to Erica because they’re short on time and need help creating the perfect family adventure, romantic getaway, girls’ trip, or multi-generation vacation.
She believes that planning a trip should be as enjoyable as the trip itself. She ensures to infuse a healthy dose of fun into every step of the process. Whether it’s brainstorming unique destinations, curating personalized itineraries, or perfecting the tiniest details, Erica aims to make the journey of planning just as exciting as the adventure that awaits.
“I’m fortunate to collaborate with some of the best travel partners across the globe through my affiliation with Gifted
Travel Network – A Virtuoso Member + Endorsed by Forbes Travel Guide. Through these affiliates, I have access to the best and most trusted experts whom I collaborate with to help craft extraordinary travel experiences, ensuring that every trip designed is nothing short of exceptional.
“My goal is to take the stress out of planning while delivering a level of personalized service and attention to detail that exceeds expectations,” she said.
The Well Traveled Soul, also has preferred partner relationships with some of the best hoteliers in the world. Through these partnerships, she can provide clients with extra VIP perks such as resort credits, room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, early check-in/late check-out and other surprises.
A custom-designed itinerary from The Well Traveled Soul begins with a personalized “Discovery Consultation.” This 30-minute call is all about you—your travel preferences, your style, and the meaningful experiences you’re dreaming of in your ideal destination. She takes the time to truly understand how you like to travel, what excites you, and what you hope to gain from your journey. “It’s our opportunity to get to know the client so we can craft a trip that’s perfectly tailored to them.” She said.
After the Discovery Consultation, Erica sifts through the vast sea of information available online and through her

partners to create a vacation that’s not just good, but exceptional. She focuses on the experiences that matter most to you, curating every detail to ensure your trip is everything you imagined and more. From hidden gems to must-see highlights, she is dedicated to turning your travel dreams into reality, leaving you free to relax and enjoy the anticipation of your upcoming adventure.
Davies said Italy is “hands-down” our most requested destination. Additionally, people are inquiring about trips to Portugal, Spain, Paris, Antigua, Grenada, and cruises through the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Even lesser thought of countries are getting noticed, such as Slovenia, Croatia, Japan, South Africa, and Colombia. River cruises and small ship sailings are becoming major trends, too. These options offer a more intimate way to explore unique destinations around the globe, taking you where those massive cruise ships simply can’t reach.
“Approximately 90% of our business is dedicated to international destinations. Emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, people are more eager than ever to explore beyond their ‘backyard’. This renewed sense of adventure is driving travelers to tick off bucket-list destinations. As global travel resumes, we’re seeing a surge in demand for unique and immersive experiences and a desire to embrace new cultures and destinations,” Erica said.
Her advice for those looking to book a trip is that it’s never too early to start planning. The more advance notice she has, especially for highly sought-after destinations, the more she can secure your preferred suite at the best properties and best location in destination! Early planning allows her to navigate the complexities of booking and ensure you have access to exclusive options and availability that might otherwise be missed.
Davies noted her unwavering commitment to personalized service and attention to detail. We understand that every traveler has unique preferences and needs, and pride ourselves on crafting bespoke travel experiences that exceed expectations. She is also committed and passionate about staying ahead of travel trends and continuously improving services to ensure each journey is not just a trip, but a memorable adventure tailored just for you.

Organizational Excellence Through Brain-Based Leadership and Conflict Resolution
Alicia J. Alexander, MSL Founder of Make A Difference Consulting
Conflicts during training sessions can significantly hinder productivity and team cohesion. “Make A Difference Consulting” addresses these disruptions through the lens of “Organizational Excellence, Through Brain-Based Leadership”: consisting of neuroleadership, neuromanagement, and authentic appreciation, which can help restore and even enhance productivity.
What Is Neuroleadership In Conflict Resolution?
Neuroleadership leverages insights from neuroscience to improve leadership and management practices. Understanding the brain’s response to conflict is crucial. During conflicts, the amygdala—the brain’s emotional center—can trigger a fight-or-flight response, reducing rational decision-making and increasing stress. To counter this, leaders should create a psychologically safe environment, where team members feel heard and valued. This can be achieved through active listening and empathetic communication, which help to deactivate the amygdala, and engage the prefrontal cortex responsible for rational thinking and problem-solving. Encouraging a growth mindset, where conflicts are seen as opportunities for learning and development, can also shift the brain’s focus from threat to challenge, promoting a more constructive response.
How Does Neuromanagement Apply to Conflict Resolution?
Neuromanagement applies principles of neuroscience to optimize management practices. Understanding the importance of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with motivation and reward, is essential. Managers can enhance productivity by setting clear, achievable goals, and providing regular, positive feedback. This not only boosts dopamine levels, but also fosters a sense of accomplishment and motivation. Additionally, incorporating regular breaks and mindfulness practices, can help regulate stress and improve focus. Realizing the impact of social pain, which activates similar brain regions as physical pain, is also critical. Addressing interpersonal conflicts swiftly and fairly can minimize this social pain and prevent it from undermining team dynamics and productivity.
How Does Authentic Appreciation Apply to Conflict Resolution?
Authentic appreciation in the workplace goes beyond simple recognition; it involves genuinely valuing and acknowledging each team member’s contributions and strengths. This approach can significantly mitigate conflict and restore productivity. Authentic appreciation fosters a positive work environment, where employees feel respected and motivated. To implement this, leaders should focus on specific, individualized appreciation, rather than generic praise. This can be done through regular one-on-one meetings, where leaders express sincere gratitude for employees’ efforts and achievements. Creating a culture of authentic appreciation also involves encouraging peer recognition, where team members acknowledge each other’s contributions. This not only strengthens interpersonal relationships, but also enhances overall team cohesion and morale.
The Organizational Excellence Through Brain-Based Leadership Approach
To restore productivity amidst conflicts, an integrated approach combining neuroleadership, neuromanagement, and authentic appreciation is most effective. Start by addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of the conflict, through empathetic communication and creating a safe environment. Implement neuromanagement techniques to maintain motivation and focus, and foster a culture of authentic appreciation to ensure every team member feels valued. This holistic approach, not only resolves conflicts, but also builds a resilient, motivated, and cohesive team, capable of achieving high productivity levels, even in challenging situations.
By understanding and applying these principles, leaders can turn a work culture into opportunities for growth and development, ultimately enhancing both individual and team performance. 401SECURED Is There When You Need Them
by Paul Lonardo
You’ve probably heard of restoration companies before, even if you do not know exactly what they do. For this, you can count yourself lucky. And for those who need the kind of service they provide, you’ll be glad to know they exist. Rhode Islanders are fortunate they have 401Secured and their team of certified technicians who are all highly trained and experienced in all aspects of fire damages from mitigation straight through reconstruction. They use the latest technology and techniques to ensure the best possible outcome for their clients while assisting insurance companies and their claims personnel as well.
This is a family-owned business that started in November 2023. Although this is a fairly new business, the family members and founders came from diverse backgrounds in the construction field and more than 40 combined years of experience handling fire claims and reconstruction.
“We handle the restoration from start to finish,” says David. “We’re a full-service company. Everything is kept in house as much as possible, and we limit how many claims we have at any given time so we can focus on the entire process for a client.”
No case is too big for 401Secured, whether partial or complete reconstruction, residential or commercial, this company has proven it can handle it all. They have a full-time staff, employees working in the field with hem as well as in the office. The company also provides emergency board-up services. When windows, doors and
roofs have been compromised, the team with 401Secured can be on site immediately to board up the breaches to keep the premises safe and secure in the immediate aftermath of a fire.
They cover the entire state of Rhode Island and local Massachusetts, working directly with Insurance Companies, other restoration companies, public adjusters, independent adjusters, etc. to ensure that each case receives the individual care it deserves.
“At 401secured.com, we understand that every restoration project is unique, that’s why we take a personalized approach to
each job, tailoring our services to meet the specific needs of our clients. And we stay in constant communication with our customers until the job is done.”
