Stranger With Metal Detector Rescues Heirloom Ring A Massachusetts woman’s diamond wedding ring, a family heirloom, is back on her finger after a man with a metal detector responded to her social media plea for help and found it at the bottom of the ocean. Francesca Teal told the Boston Globe that she was tossing a football with her husband this month at North Beach in Hampton, New Hampshire, when the ring that once belonged to her great-grandmother slipped off her finger. They couldn’t find the ring in the water after hours of searching, the 29-year-old said. Teal posted about the ordeal on Facebook and asked anyone who might frequent the beach with a metal detector to be on the lookout. Her post was shared thousands of times and got the attention of a man named Lou Asci. Asci, 60 put on a wetsuit and headlamp and went into the water searching for the ring with his metal detector. The first two days he went looking, he had no luck. “I wanted to go back and give it one last shot,” he told the newspaper. That’s when he found the ring buried beneath the sandy ocean floor. He sent Teal a picture, writing in a message: “Please tell me this is the ring so I can finally get off this beach.” Asci returned the ring to Teal’s home, and her husband got on one knee to place it back on her finger. “I have been so overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers this past week,” Teal wrote on Facebook. “It has been so amazing to witness humanity in this positive way & has brought so much faith to myself & others.”

It’s the tallest active geyser on the planet— with an emphasis on “active.” From 2015 to 2017, it didn’t erupt at all. There was another largely quiet period from 1911 to 1961, but in 2018 it logged a record-setting 32 eruptions, a feat it has crushed this year with 47 eruptions, per the US Geological Survey. Why? Good question, and one that hasn’t been answered. It’s one on a long list of geyser mysteries, in fact. The gey ser-research field is a thin one, and as Yel lowstone National Park’s hydrologist ex plained the area beneath Steamboat hasn’t been mapped. However, seismic sensors there have revealed that the geyser’s water source may sit as deep as 130 feet. Most other geysers seem to be fueled by shallower reserves; deeper equals warm er, so that could be a factor in Steamboat’s ability to propel water to heights of more than 300 feet. Michael Poland with the USGS earlier this year said it’s possible that increased snowfall in Yellowstone of late has led to more groundwater to fuel the geyser. What scientists are saying is that there’s no link between the increased activ ity and any potential looming eruption of Yellowstone’s supervolcano. “Yellowstone has an incredible geyser system that is un related to magmatic activity—other than the magmatic system basically providing heat,” tweeted one volcanologist. USA To day noted that the Waimangu Geyser in New Zealand has managed to shoot wa ter taller than Steamboat has, but it’s been Taylor Swift ($825 million)

Egypt opened two of its oldest pyramids, located about 25 miles south of the capital Cairo, to visitors for the first time since 1965. Antiquities Minister Khaled el-Anany told reporters that tourists are now allowed to visit the Bent Pyramid and its satellite pyramid in the Dahshur royal necropolis, which is part of the Memphis Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bent Pyramid, which the AP reports was built during the Old Kingdom of the Pharaoh of Sneferu, in about 2600 BC, is unique in that it has two internal structures. El-Anany said the Bent Pyramid represents a transitional form of pyramid construction between the Djoser Step Pyramid (2667-2648 BC) and the Meidum Pyramid (also about 2600 BC).

A 12-year-old Australian boy has pulled off a bold feat that drew inter national headlines: He stole his mom’s credit card and managed to fly to Bali, Indonesia, for a posh, four-day vacation before getting caught. As recounted in the Australian program A Current Affair, the boy did some research online and figured out he could fly alone without needing a letter from a parent on Jetstar Airways. He nabbed his mom’s credit card, tricked his grandmother into giving him his passport, took a train to the airport, and flew to Bali. “They just asked for my student ID and passport to prove that I’m over 12 and that I’m in secondary school,” says the boy, identified only as Drew. He then checked into a four-star hotel, having made reservations in advance, telling the clerk that his older sister would be joining him soon.

Mom says she was informed her son’s passport would be flagged by fed eral authorities as a result, but that apparently never happened. In the aftermath, Jetstar promises to tighten up its policies. “He just doesn’t like the word no and that’s what I got, a kid in Indonesia.”

The Maravillas was heading home to Spain with treasures from the Americas (and some contraband), plus some salvaged from another wrecked Spanish ship, when it collided with the flagship of its fleet following a navigational error. Just 45 of the 650 people aboard survived. Carl Allen, the founder of Allen Exploration, which carried out the latest expedition, says the wreck was “heavily salvaged by Spanish, English, French, Dutch, Bahamian, and American expeditions in the 17th and 18th centuries, and blitzed by salvors from the 1970s to early 1990s.” They weren’t interested in the science, just in the treasure, he says; his team is the first to survey it scientifically, investigating how the ship was wrecked and how hurricanes scattered the debris over the ensuing years.

The team used magnetometers to identify spots with possible metal over a search area that spanned 11 miles by 5 miles, and intricately mapped all their findings over a period of three years. Says the director of marine archaeology for the project, “This isn’t just forensic marine archaeology. We’re also digging into former excavations, working out what previous salvage teams got up to, where and why. So much data has been lost from this ravaged wreck. It’s time to reverse those trends.”

The world’s newest and biggest space telescope is showing Jupiter as never before, auroras and all. Scientists released the shots of the solar system’s biggest planet at the end of August. The James Webb Space Telescope took the photos in July, capturing unprecedented views of Jupiter’s northern and southern lights, and swirling polar haze. Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, a storm big enough to swallow Earth, stands out brightly alongside countless smaller storms. One wide-field picture is particularly dramatic, showing the faint rings around the planet, as well as two tiny moons against a glittering background of galaxies, the AP reports. “We’ve never seen Jupiter like this. It’s all quite incredible,” said planetary astronomer Imke de Pater, of the University of California, Berkeley, who helped lead the observations. “We hadn’t really expected it to be this good, to be honest,” she added in a statement.

• 1/4 cup unsalted butter • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 1/4 cup low-fat milk • salt and pepper • 3 cups (tightly packed) fresh arugula, finely chopped, about a 5 oz. container • 6 oz. mild cheddar cheese (the white one), •grated6oz.mozzarella, grated • Fine bread crumbs (Using GF breadcrumbs will keep this dish gluten-free)

Melt the butter in a pan and add the onion and garlic. Sauté until translucent, then add the milk, salt and pepper, and the arugula. Sauté for a few minutes, stirring, so that all of the arugula wilts down.

Slowly add the cheddar until it all melts, then add the moz zarella, stirring slowly, until you have one big gooey mass of goodness in the pan. Pour the gooey cheese mix into a shallow pan and place it in the fridge for a few hours. It will firm up and you will be able to cut it easily into cubes that you will then place on top of the clams.

Once the cheese mixture has firmed up, and it’s time to cook, start a hardwood charcoal fire in your grill. Open the clams and put them on a tray, topping each clam with a cube of the firm cheese and arugula stuffing

With the primary election being held on September 13th, and the general election taking place on November 8th, the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA) is using this opportunity to remind Rhode Islanders, Get Up and Get Out the Vote, Rhode Islanders!

If any of these categories apply to you, please take the time now to make sure you are able to vote.

As you may know, RIHA relentlessly dedicates itself to various advocacy efforts on behalf of the entire industry, not just its members, each year. In order to vote in a party’s primary election, you must either be a member of that party or unaffiliated (independent), and be registered to vote in the district where you live.Only those who are registered as “unaffiliated” voters can choose which primary to vote in, depending on who is running in the primary.

The most effective way to protect your business is to get involved; your voice and perspective are the most effective advocacy tools our industry has.

This year, every general assembly candidate will be up for re-election. After the uphill climb our industry operators have experienced over the last couple of years, we know you care more than ever about what happens to your business - but if you do not vote, you are silencing your voice.

Dottie, who worked for the state of Rhode Island for over 28 years before retiring, said being able to demonstrate why restaurant owners need to fix a problem works far better than simply telling them they must do it to comply. It’s the compassion she brings to her work that endears her to restaurant owners instead of running for cover.

One surprising and remarkable fact is that not one of Rhode Island’s breweries, unlike many small businesses, was forced to close. Many of the breweries took the extra time that was forced upon them in the pandemic and used it to their benefit, testing and creating new craft brews that they may not have had time to develop otherwise, and those new craft brews became hits for the breweries.

Some breweries had a takeout in place throughout the pandemic, while other breweries were provided grants post-pandemic to entice consumers with food and other incentives such as live entertainment and activities like “trivia night,” to draw in more business. Let’s face it, those loyal to their love of craft brews were never going to curb their desire for the ale, no matter how long they lost access to it. Actually, not having access to it, may have caused craft brew fans to want to jump right back into their favorite brewery, adding more profit to the industry once the economy was allowed to reopen. Below are some statistics regarding the state of breweries in Rhode Island. At 2019’s end, Rhode Island was home to 27 breweries, according to the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those breweries employed a total of 251 people, who were paid an average of $598 a week.

At the end of September 2021, from where the most current figures are known, the number of breweries rose to 34, and that number continues to increase; the number of employees added brought the total to 330; and the average weekly wage stood at $676. Since then, the brewery figures have risen even more, according to Jeremy Duffy, a founder of The Guild, a brewery that started in Pawtucket, and now also has locations in Providence and Warren.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a negative effect on more than the physical, emotional, and mental health of people. So many businesses, particularly smaller ones, deeply suffered, with many still not back to pre-pandemic profits, and others who sadly had to close their doors permanently. This was heartbreaking, especially for the businesses whose staff and owners put forth maximum effort to keep their businesses alive after losing much of their revenue, and for some, damaging their spirit. Others, however, refused to lose confidence, and consequently, have persevered and are now thriving once again.

How about all those recent cookouts and barbecues?! I’m sure July & August were filled with a ton of them! I bet you’re asking yourself a lot of questions. What can I eat at these functions? What should I bring that is healthy next time?

Well, we must change our habits and make them a lifestyle change! Personally, I would bring turkey burgers to a cookout! When you arrive, choose the salad over the chips and salsa. I would do this out of habit! Do I grab dessert?? Of course I do; I am human and enjoy myself, in moderation. See, there is a difference between habit and need. You do not NEED the chips that are being served. You will want to have the salad over the chips because you’ve made this a lifestyle change, which then turns into a habit!

Stacie Venagro Fitness is located at 161 Macklin Street in Cranston.

I have been eating clean for 17 years now, and everything I do is out of habit. When I say eating clean, I mean healthy, real, whole foods. I always eat fresh so I can get the best possible Thenutrients.common misconception is that people must eat bland, boring foods in order to live a healthy lifestyle! That’s extremely false! I enjoy the same foods as the next person, but I prepare them in a cleaner fashion. For example, chicken parm can be baked instead of fried. Pasta can be brown rice pasta, and veggies do not have to be smothered in butter. Again, these can become habits that will turn into a healthy lifestyle change and something that your future body will thank you for. So, I challenge you to change your lifestyle, change your habits, and in turn, it will change your body, as well as your state of mind! Who wouldn’t want to feel more energized, well rested, and happier throughout the day?! It all starts with the food you put into your body!

Exercise doesn’t have to monotonous, there are plenty of great places to hike locally. There’s book called Weekend Hikes in Rhode Island by Ken Weber that I was introduced to awhile an excellent job of breaking down each destination with detailed directions, approximate the distance. A couple that are great for fall are Napatree Point and Browning Mill PondThese are just a couple of the many that are close by. Always be safe when hiking new research prior to heading out. As always never hike close to dark. If hiking new areas isn’t a walk or run in your neighborhood or local park. Get your family involved in fitness! If you don’t have children take the dogs along with to get outside and explore nature. There’s plenty to explore to stimulate the mind and activity in. When you’re having fun exercise doesn’t feel like a task. Most dogs are always you can train them to run while you’re training g yourself. Alternate between jogging second intervals to start off and work your way up from there. Bring water for you and everyone hydrated. Enjoy the beginning of this beautiful season and stay motivated. Just because it’s getting mean that it’s not a good time to start working out. Anytime is a great time to start! 46

Other positive factors for eating a plant based diet are:

Plant based diets are when we focus on eating foods that come from plants and other foods that are healthier and are loaded with nutrition because plants make up the larger portion of the products. We all know that fruits and vegetables are good for us so it must be that eating a plantbased diet must be super healthy, right? Yes, of course, but let’s first define what a “plant based diet” means. A plant based diet is a style of eating. It is what you’re eating, how your food is prepared, and lastly, what are the real health benefits of a plant based diet, and do they ever fall short on nutrition?

There are numerous positive benefits derived from eating a plant-based diet so how do we ensure that we are following a plant based diet that is healthy? First, is the diet rich in

• Animal preservation and ethics

A good way to think about a plant-based diet is to think about eating foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. This may mean preparing your foods from “scratch.”

Some dietitians, chefs, and nutritionists talk about a plant-based diet as if it’s a separate or new way of eating. Many use the words “vegetarian” and “plant-based” interchangeably, but the truth is that there is so much more to it than just eliminating animal meat from your diet. Vegetarians don’t eat meat, dairy etc. That is not what a plant based diet is. To simplify the definition, plant-based foods are vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, all of which are considered healthy choices. There are other options, such as white and other refined grains, dairy, sugars, and packages of vegan foods and vegan fast foods that are also plant-based, but not necessarily healthy.

vitamins, minerals, and fiber? Is it loaded with antioxidants? Diets that include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are heart healthy and contribute to lower cholesterol and saturated fats, and are higher in dietary fiber. This diet can help prevent disease. When higher in antioxidants, this diet can also help reduce chronic inflammatory diseases. A good example is diabetes. This diet also stays away from chemical additives, which have been shown to cause cancer. Another benefit is that this diet can be helpful with weight loss. Eating less animal fat and more vegetables, fruits, and fiber keeps calories and fat down and promotes a better digestion system, while helping to keep your metabolism working.

I’d like to explain the meaning of a plantbased diet in terms of a diet with a plantbased foundation that focuses on health and balance: eating more of the good stuff and less of the bad stuff.

Start by adding some of these foods to your diet:

Fresh fruits and vegetables can be perishable so buy just as much as you need to minimize waste. In addition, the more fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet, the better results you will have. On the other hand, not eating meat, or consuming milk, eggs, etc., can cause a protein deficit, but you can find protein in plants and making these choices will ensure that your diet is on the right track. You may also lack iron, calcium, and your B vitamins, especially B12. Dark, leafy vegetables contain more calcium so eat enough of those. You can get vitamin D from mushrooms and your B12 can come from foods like soy, yeast, or by taking a supplement. Plant based diets are not vegan and you don’t have to give up eating meat, you just need to find a middle ground.

Now, what could possibly be negative about eating a plant-based diet?

• Nuts: any whole and unprocessed nuts and nut butters, such as almonds, cashews, brazil nuts, etc.

Stepping into a plant-based diet doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing decision and it doesn’t have to happen overnight. Take it a step at a time. Slowly substitute non-plant-based foods and highly processed foods with foods that are plant-based and healthier. See some examples below of plant-based foods to add to your diet, as well as foods to avoid to maintain a plant-based diet.

• Fruits: all fresh fruits and not dried (dried fruits often contain added sugar and preservatives)

• Spices and herbs all, except those with preservatives

• Unsweetened beverages: coffee, tea, sparkling water Avoid these foods to maintain a plant-based diet: • Fast food

The best part about meditation is that you can do it at any location. I have been known to meditate in my hotel room or at poolside, while on the road. In California, it’s commonplace to perform yoga or workout anywhere you want. Agility ladders - These do not take up as much room as you may think. For cardio, lower body, balance, endurance, and overall fitness, it’s one of the best investments you’ll ever make. Besides working the lower body, you can also perform some real intense core and upper body drills with this kit. It’s great to take it out to a quad and just make up your own drills.

Some other tips to remember: Drink plenty of water - Yes, I know you have heard it said many times, but it’s so critical that I’m going to make my first tip. You need to stay hydrated. Flying will dehydrate you and the stress of traveling will, as well. In addition, if you become dehydrated, 1 percent your productivity goes down by 10 percent.

Take some private time - I always find an hour or two each day to explore my surroundings and the culture of where I am visiting. I also always make it a habit to spend time with my host and the people who are the reason for my visit. It extends my sphere of influence and you can never have enough friends, especially ones from other cultures.

Suspension trainers - One of my two favorites are the Purmotion Airfit and the Ko 8. The amount of drills and skills you can do with these is truly limitless. They also take up little to no room in your suitcase and can be used in your hotel room or at any park near your hotel.

TIPS FOR WHEN YOU’RE ON THE ROAD. Being on the road can be a real hassle, there’s no doubt about that. Now that you have some fitness tips and kits, let’s discuss food options that will help to keep you healthy, when on the road. What I do is to try to maintain what I normally do at home. I basically stick to protein and veggies, with some carbs when I workout. In the states, it’s pretty easy to find food that’s healthy, just about anywhere. Overseas, however, you might have some challenges with different cultures and food types. When traveling to Ireland, I found that there was definitely an abundance of eggs, fish, and chicken. So poached eggs were always an option for me. In Japan, fish was always present and in abundance. It’s not uncommon for some cultures to eat fish for breakfast. So when in Japan, I actually came to enjoy eating fish as my first meal of the day.

Stay connected with home - Make sure you reach out to your family or significant other, regularly. Feelings of being homesick or lonely can cloud your thinking. Stay connected and communicate what’s happening to keep that bond strong, between yourself and your loved ones.

the family business began nearly five decades ago, in 1974, when their dad, Anthony, Sr. started Hartford Paving Corp. They began doing driveways and small parking areas. After a few years, their company expanded.

“We did not forget our roots, even though we started to accomplish other feats. Our still ongoing relationship with Providence Gas Company/National Grid (now RI Energy) has been growing strong since 1982,” Anthony II said. They now also do site work, utility work, roads, and many other construction services. Some of the contracts that they have held include work done for the State of Rhode Island, many municipalities and many utility companies. They are one of the preferred paving companies of many general contractors.

In the decades following, plans for new exit ramps to their location sparked Anthony Sr.’s idea for a new business venture…a material yard. They opened the doors in 2003. It turned out being a somewhat bittersweet moment for the family.

A family-owned business base located immediately off Rte. 295 in Johnston, has been at the epicenter of all outdoor projects, large and small; from contractors to homeowners, from a small walkway to a large patio or pool apron, Outdoor Escapes of New England by Hartford have their customers covered.

The brotherly duo of Chris Corsinetti and Anthony Corsinetti, II, are the company’s co-owners. They have seen exponential growth over the past couple of years, thanks in large parts to its location change from 112 Old Pocasset Road to 281 Scituate Ave. (exit 7 off interstate 295), its exceptional customer service, and selection for any Chrisproject.saidthat

Outdoor Escapes of New England: Making Outdoor Living Easy.

“Our father passed away shortly before he could see the ramps or the new business venture kick into action,” he said. “He knew it would be a high volume of traffic, but made it an easy and preferred destination for contractors to pick up the materials they needed. We have been blessed by his vision and with the number of returning customers we have.” They stock many different types of pavers and other such materials for the do-it-yourselfer and the seasoned professionals. Two of their more popular lines are Techo-Bloc and the Nicolock that are used for such services as retaining walls and paving stones. Customers can either select and drive away with what they need (after purchasing, of course!), or, they can deliver it to the home or job site. Besides Rhode Island, they also have clients throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Chris Corsinetti lauds his company’s eight-employee workforce for their dedication and hard work. He said that their sales team is mainly responsible for their expansion and having their stock “go through the roof,” leading to excellent customer satisfaction. All of our team continues to demonstrate support and leads to the positive customer experience. The explosion of work has not been lost on the brothers. “Our sales team, which includes my daughter, Kara Serapiglia, Amaury Rodriguez, Bob Rocchio, and Jason Salinger, along with our yard and delivery team of Jean Laboy, Mike Ramos, Justin Lerch, and Steve Dean have been the backbone of our significant growth. Without them, it would be difficult to be in the position we are in now. We’ve created such an incredible culture here,” Chris said.

As for the do-it-yourselfer, Chris said that they can be both a blessing and a curse. He noted many of those home improvement shows make some of the projects out to be easy. He tells people that those projects are not as easy as they appear. Those are done by people who have experience in those areas.

“We all work very well together with the understanding of the importance of customer service. We win in the workplace first, marketplace second.” Added Anthony, “We have grown so much in a short time. It’s really a credit to them to keep pushing us forward and making sure we continue our efforts.”

The “weekend warrior” will often lack the tools, knowledge, or understanding regarding what truly goes into making those projects work. Whether one needs materials to pave over a driveway, redo a patio, or build a fire pit (one of the more popular plans for homeowners), they have the materials necessary to ensure it looks nice and is also durable.

Many insurance plans include a deductible. In the case of health insurance, this is the amount of money you have to pay in total (usually in a given year) before your health insurance assumes the costs. For example, a plan with a $1,000 deductible would require that you pay all bills up to $1,000 out of your pocket before insurance coverage would kick in.

FWhen is the best time to talk to your kids about mo ney? For most parents, the answer is simple: as soon as you can. Talking to your kids about money can help them learn how to be financially responsible, self-supporting adults. To get the discussion flowing, consider using the se conversation starters depending on your child’s age. Begin with basics for your preschooler. Look for oppor tunities to teach values that will help your child develop positive financial attitudes and behaviors later in life. For example, the concept of sharing with others is some thing most young children can grasp. Talking about what you’re thankful for and involving kids in philanthropy can help instill gratitude. After all, children primarily learn about money from modeling their parents’ behavior. Explain financial building blocks to your elementary school student. As your child progresses through school, start introducing the difference between needs and wants. Present the concepts of cost and quality to teach your child how to discern value. Give your child the chan ce to make some simple financial decisions that involve delayed gratification, such as setting aside a small allo wance to buy a toy. Teaching children to strengthen their willpower and giving them age-appropriate autonomy is a foundation that can help them flourish financially in Understandadulthood. that your middle schooler may be watch ing more than listening. Kids tend to be peer-oriented in the preteen years and may be less receptive to parental advice. Keep talks short, but don’t abandon the mission. Remember that your actions speak volumes about your values. For example, if your child hears you continually talking about a new car purchase or sees you frequently shopping for nonessential items, he or she may pick up similar attitudes and behaviors. Consider involving your child in donations or charitable work you are passionate about or encourage him or her to support a cause of their Encourageown.

AARON GUCKIAN for Lieutenant Governor

Aaron Guckian believes Rhode Island can do much better in terms of helping small businesses, making the state a preferred destination, and having the means to further its growth in shaping Little Rhody into a welcoming climate. Guckian is running for lieutenant governor because he knows that Rhode Islanders have been hard hit by the pandemic, with skyrocketing gas prices, supply chain shortages, and inflation. He believes that residents deserve to have an energetic, highly-engaged lieutenant governor, who will meet with them regularly to listen to their concerns, bring stakeholders together, and respond with bold action.

“There is too much red tape when dealing with the state, which leads people to becoming disillusioned. Then, they have to try to find other ways to have their questions answered. I know I have the skills and knowledge to get things done. We can and should be a state in which people will take pride. This is why I want to be Rhode Island’s next lieutenant governor,” Guckian said.

“There are a lot of small problems that have turned into larger ones, and which are still climbing: inflation, gas prices, fees for LLCs, and taxes for small businesses. There needs to be someone who works in business and understands what is happening in order to step up and serve the people of our great state. Government should be able to help those needing it, not turning people away.” When elected in November, Guckian will work tirelessly to fulfill the statutory responsibilities of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. To that end, he will address the growing needs of small businesses, provide comprehensive, quality services to seniors, and respond to emergencies, quickly and effectively. This means having a Help Center that stays open until 9:00 pm so that small business owners can contact IT after regular office hours to have people quickly responding to their problem. This means having programs and services available for those continuing to struggle with the rising costs of food, services, and other amenities. Finding ways to keep money in people’s pockets is Thiskey.means having the lieutenant governor be a champion for those on the front lines, such as doctors, nurses, CNAs, as well as offering them incentives for training and placement. Too many are leaving those industries, especially now when we need them, thus, creating a shortage of quality healthcare workers in RI.

Guckian believes in the importance of meeting and listening to the public one-on-one to gauge what they feel are “hot button” topics and what can be done to generate solutions. In order for that to work, Guckian said that the state needs to do a better job of cutting through the obstacles that hinder business growth.

To better illustrate…

In all of the years that I have been in the painting industry, a simple rule that I have always lived by when coaching someone through issues relat ed to priming is simply, if there is ever any doubt, then prime it!

Technically, if a surface is sound, there is not a prevalent concern of something bleeding through the finish coat and it is “dull” enough to accept a paint coating, thus, there really is not a viable need to prime the surface, particularly with today’s technologies.

Obviously, example after example can be listed. Priming a surface that does not necessarily need it, will most likely lead to a circumstance of “no harm, no foul.”

My name is Tom Lopatosky. If you do not prime a bare plaster surface, peeling issues could come about down the road and massive inconsistencies of a cosmetic nature will be visible in the short term.

“To Prime, or NOT to Prime.”

Assuming the surface is ready to go, we must now determine as to whet her or not to “prime” it. Primer is an invaluable resource in the painting systems all around us. It is the first product that is often applied to wha tever surface we are painting.

Neglecting to prime a surface that necessitates it to be primed, however, can lead to an annoyingly frustrating time in cor recting something that could easily have been avoided if the proper primer approach had been taken from the beginning.

While there is always the “default” act of asking your local paint dealer or calling a paint manufacturer helpline to run the question by them, really things are quite simple…if there is any doubt, prime it! Then simply determining which primer is the more appropriate to use is what’s next with the priming issue.

As with many things, the answer depends on the specific situation. Pri or to even thinking about priming, the surface in question should be properly prepared by prepping it to the point where the surface is sound (free of any peeling paint or unwanted surface inadequacy) and clean (free from dirt, dust, etc).

bonding qualities of the surface it is being applied to, i.e., super slick metals, glass, glossy layers of previous coatings Knowing this, it is probably easy to see why when painting, there may be a question as to whether or not to use primer, and furthermore, if priming is appropriate, what type of primer to use.

Shop In RI 65

If old oil-based interior trim finish is not correctly primed prior to finishing it with a waterborne coating, then it is most likely just a matter of time before the paint coating directly applied to it is triggered by some sort of minor surface abrasion and begins to peel off “in sheets.”

If new red cedar – even new pre-primed red cedar – is not properly primed prior to finish coating, cedar bleed will most certainly be an unsightly phenomenon that will have to be dealt with down the line.

It would be exceptionally rare to prime a surface that didn’t really requi re primer and to subsequently realize some type of detrimental effect while doing so. The greater worry would be of not priming a surface which absolutely required it.

At times, when working on the act of painting our homes, whether ex terior or interior, it is not unusual to feel our inner Hamlet cause us to ask the head scratching question, “To Prime, or NOT to Prime,” before applying a finish coat.

The main purposes of primer are to: Seal the surface it is being applied to and to help the finishes applied over it to appear as even and consistent as possible Prevent bleed-through of anything that may more easily be trying to force its way through the finish coatings on top of it if primer were not in place to block it from doing so (examples: wood tannins, graffiti, to Enhancebacco).
