DEA Takes Millions From US Travelers

USA Today has discovered that DEA agents routinely seize cash from American travelers without ever arresting, charging, or sometimes even questioning them. Further, this practice has become integral to the DEA’s budget. “Basically, you’ve got to feed the monster,” a former DEA supervisor says. Over the past decade, DEA agents have seized more than $209 million in cash from at least 5,200 people at 15 airports.

They do this—largely without the knowledge or consent of airlines or Amtrak—by using a network of informants in the travel industry to profile travelers.

Just paying cash for a ticket is enough to get on the DEA’s radar, but it’s not enough evidence of wrongdoing to detain or search a traveler. So agents typically start by asking if they can ask the traveler a few questions then asking if they can search their bags. If they seize cash, they usually give the traveler a receipt for it then let them go.

Christelle Tillerson had $25,000 seized by the DEA after she bought a one-way ticket to California in 2014. She told agents her boyfriend withdrew the money from his USPS retirement account so she could buy a truck. But Tillerson is an ex-con and a police dog smelled drugs on the cash, so it was seized. Tillerson proved she was telling the truth, and the government gave her money back 18 months later, minus $4,000 as a forfeiture. Her lawyer calls it “outrageous.”

Wickford is a small village in the town of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, United States, which is named after Wickford in Essex, England. Wickford is located on the west side of Narragansett Bay, just about a 20-minute drive across two bridges from Newport, Rhode Island. The birthplace site is a lovely little museum back in the woods... with young docent guides who are very devoted to their history lessons. The entire tour only takes about 45 minutes, so it is easy for families with children.

Smith’s Castle is not the sort of castle we sometimes envision.

It is a structure which would have been considered quite large in its day. Parts of the house date to the 1600s, however much of it had to be rebuilt after fires in the 1700s. The house is on the National Historic Register and there are costumed guides to take you through and tell you the story of the house and its many inhabitants. It’s worth the trip.

Amid the bustle of Atwells Avenue, Roma is a low-key, rewarding and vibrant corner spot with multiple ways to experience their delicious takes on old country fare.

“Roma is known for the quality of our food,” Ierfino continued. “It’s homemade, it’s fresh, it’s affordable. We try to buy as local as we can, everything is made on-premise, fresh and made to order.

Roma is located at 310 Atwells Ave, just off of DePasquale Square, and has a 30-year tradition under the same ownership. Roma started as an Italian market in 1982. It has since moved across the street and expanded into Roma Banquets and Catering with a 110-person banquet hall upstairs, open any day of the week. Ieferno’s latest venture is Ristorante Roma, which began five years ago and features various live entertainment and fine dining on Friday and Saturday nights.

“Classic Italian food,” Ierfino said. “We do everything from sit-down dinners, lunches, brunches, breakfasts, semi-formals, birthdays, weddings. Any event you can think of.”

“We do a lot of off-premise catering,” Ierfino continued. “We’ll come to your home, your office, wherever it may be. We can provide you

with everything from staff to tents to tables and chairs. We do a lot of prepared food orders. You can call us the day of for a pan of lasagna or a pan of eggplant. We do a lot of party platters and cold cut trays, crudités, fruit platters, hors d’oeuvres – you name it.”

The market/deli is welcoming and abundant, open seven days a week and popular with the lunch crowd. It’s a real soup-to-nuts experience, or a savory olive medley to panini, cannoli and gelato experience. There’s a large deli with hot trays of lasagna and stuffed peppers, low shelves of exotic pastas and racks of olive oil. They’ve got imported meats – prosciuttos, salamis, capicola – and locally sourced products like Daniele prosciutto, a family-run operation from Pascoag.

“We’re all about service,” Ierfino said.

“Everyone’s treated like family. We know people by their names, what they like to order. We have a reputation, and families have been with us for years and years.”

There are so many enticing options for lunch, the biggest trouble may be deciding in short order. Calzone or panini? Frittata of the day, or pizza? There’s hot and cold deli options, including Boars Head meats and homemade

chicken salad. Sandwiches like Da Hill with hot soppressata, sharp provolone and roasted peppers, or Roma’s Signature: Italian ham, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, e.v.o.o and cracked black pepper. Hot options like veal, chicken and eggplant parmesan, or Toscano chicken, sausage and peppers and herb crusted pork loin with sautéed onions.

Or there’s a selection of salads, from antipasto and Caprese to arugula with caramelized onions and crumbled goat cheese.

“My families been in this business since I was in diapers,” Ierfino said.

“Whether it’s restaurants, catering. I’m not classically trained. I just learned through the trenches, which is the best way to learn, I think. I moved my way up.”

Twice-Baked Potatoes with Broccoli and Cheese

Autumn is making its rounds soon, and that means it’s time for some hearty and wholesome dishes that fill you up and satisfy you. Potatoes are always a big hit when loaded with cheese and sour cream, but to throw a little healthy punch in there, I decided to incorporate broccoli which pairs up nicely with the other ingredients. Plus, broccoli is loaded with anti-oxidants, high in Vitamin C and Vitamin A and is low in calories; seriously, the list could go on but you get the picture. These twice baked potatoes are a great side to any meal and are super filling.

Ingredients: (Yields 8 Potatoes)

4 medium sized russet potatoes 1 teaspoon olive oil 3 tablespoons of butter, softened ½ cup of sour cream 3 tablespoons ranch dressing ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper ¾ teaspoon chives 1 teaspoon garlic powder

By Kelly Paterson 1 ½ cups of cooked broccoli, chopped 1 ½ cups of shredded cheddar cheese, divided Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Place potatoes in the oven on a dish and bake for 45-60 minutes, until they are soft. Once the potatoes are cool enough, slice them in half and scoop out the potato pulp and place in a large bowl.

Then rub the outsides of the potato skins with the olive oil. Place potato skins on prepared baking sheet and set aside.

Add the butter to the potato pulp and mash with a beater until smooth, and then add sour cream, ranch dressing, salt, pepper, chives, garlic powder, broccoli and ¾ cups of shredded cheddar cheese. Mix well and divide the filling evenly for all of the potatoes. Last, top the potatoes with the remaining cheese you have.

Bake for 20-25 minutes. Serve hot.

Cavatelli with Stewed Summer Vegetables By: Chef Adam Baffoni

As the summer draws to an end, chefs are met with very bittersweet feelings. No more hot days means no more 110 degree kitchens; but it also means no more fresh, local summer vegetables. This dish pays homage to all of the succulent vegetables that are only in their prime for the two or three hottest months of the year. Fresh tomatoes, summer squash and bell peppers are something that we chefs wait for all year, and it’s worth the wait for a few months of amazing produce. This dish can be made with either fresh or dried cavatelli. I always prefer to make my own, but not everyone has the time to learn to make cavatelli from scratch. The vegetables are incredibly simple and easy to make, and can be prepared days ahead of time.

Directions Ingredients Heat a small amount of oil in a wide pan, on medium heat. Add the 1 lb. cavatelli garlic and onions and cook, stirring occasionally until the onions 1 large zucchini, diced begin to sweat, about 3 minutes. Add the rest of the vegetables and 1 large summer squash, diced the white wine. Season with salt and pepper. Continue to cook, 2 large heirloom tomatoes, diced stirring occasionally until the vegetables release all of their moisture and create a sauce. If necessary, add some chicken stock. Cook for 1 2 green bell peppers, sliced hour, stirring occasionally and adding chicken stock when necessary, 1 medium white onion, sliced until the vegetables are completely tender and the tomatoes have 3 cloves garlic, minced broken down into the sauce.

1/3 cup white wine Chicken stock, as needed Salt and pepper, to taste Oil, for cooking 14 ShopInRI

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the cavatelli in the boiling water until al dente, then drain and add to the vegetables.

Cook the cavatelli 2 more minutes in the sauce and serve.

Theres not much I do without garlic. I love extra virgin oil, there’s so many different kinds it’s like wine to me.

PASTA WITH LOBSTER SAUCE

Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails I first had this dish at a small familyrun Taverna in Santorini, Greece.

Sure, the scenery might have played a part in just how enjoyable it was!

But; it was also pretty darn good at home when I recreated it…

For the stock...

2 1 ½ lb. lobsters, slightly undercooked 12 cups water 1/2 onion, chopped into quarters 3 celery stalks, chopped into quarters 1 carrot, chopped into quarters Undercook (steam or boil, whatever your favorite method) the lobsters, less than the usual 8 minutes. Remove the lobster meat from the shells and set aside.

Place the cleaned lobster shells, claws, tails, legs and bodies in a large pot. (You don't want any of the internal organs or tommaley.) Crush the shells so they fit in the pot. Add the water, onion, celery and carrot. Set the heat on high. Cook until it’s reduced by half.

Strain the stock, discarding the lobster shells and veggies. Bring the stock back to the heat and reduce it until all you have left is 1 cup of intense stock.

For the lobster sauce...

1/2 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped pinch of Italian red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon parsley extra virgin olive oil 1/2 cup lobster stock 1/4 cup San Marzano tomato sauce (see below) splash of un-oaked white wine (I use Alice White Chardonnay.) salt and pepper to taste Final ingredients...

Reserved lobster meat 1/2 lb. cooked pasta 20 ShopInRI

Add some olive oil to a large pan and sauté the onions until translucent.

Season with salt and pepper. Add the garlic and cook for 10 seconds.

Add the red pepper flakes and parsley.

Add ¼ cup of the lobster stock and let it cook, reducing by half. Add the other ¼ cup of lobster stock and the tomato sauce. Let it cook for a couple of minutes and add the white wine. Cook for a few minutes more.

Cook the pasta and drain it, even before it reaches the al dente stage. Place the pasta in the pan with the sauce, heating and coating thoroughly. Add the reserved lobster pieces and warm them through, tossing in the sauce. Serve immediately.

For the San Marzano tomato sauce: I take a can of San Marzano tomatoes and place it in a food processor or Vita-Mix, and blend.

Pour into a pan and reduce over medium heat by half, until sauce has thickened. ENJOY!

Baby Citrus Cheesecakes Recipe

Baby Citrus cheesecakes will be a refreshing hit when brought to a party, cookout, or for an after dinner dessert. These cupcakesize treats are a fantastically simple alternative to a full-size cheesecake. You could also garnish them with fresh raspberries, strawberries or blueberries.

Makes: 12 servings Hands on Time: 25 minutes Total time: 2 hours Ingredients:

• 12 vanilla wafers • 11 ounces cream cheese, softened* • 1/28 -ounce carton mascarpone cheese* • ½ cup granulated sugar • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • ½ teaspoon lemon zest • ½ teaspoon orange zest • Whipped cream • Glazed Kumquats (see below) or thinly sliced fresh orange (optional garnish)

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line twelve 21/2-inch muffin cups with paper bake cups.

Place a vanilla wafer in each. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, mascarpone, sugar, flour and vanilla with an electric mixer until combined. Stir in eggs and lemon and orange zest. Pour into bake cups, filling two-thirds full.

3. Bake about 20 minutes or until edges are set. Cool in pan on wire rack (centers will sink slightly). Remove from pan and chill for at least 2 hours. Before serving, top each cheesecake with a dollop of whipped cream and, if you like, a kumquat, orange slice, fresh raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries.

Tips • Substitution *If you don’t have mascarpone cheese, substitute two 8-ounce packages cream cheese, softened, for the mascarpone cheese and 3-ounce package of cream cheese.

• Glazed Kumquats: Halve kumquats, removing any seeds with a knife point. In a small saucepan stir together 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water. Heat to simmering, stirring to dissolve sugar. Add kumquats. Cook about 10 minutes or until syrup thickens and kumquats soften. Remove from syrup, allowing excess to drip off, and cool on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

I love interviewing people, doing research, and writing articles. Having the opportunity to meet with, interview, and write about Frank Martinelli and PV Farms was a highlight of my career. Being a huge animal lover, I knew I would enjoy going to the farm but I never expected to get the education that I got. I also knew, being a fitness instructor and having been in the health and wellness industry for quite a few years now, that today’s animals are given hormones and antibiotics to bulk them up at a young age, all for economic reasons. It’s all about how fast and how big the animal can grow, only to be slaughtered as quickly as possible so someone can make a profit. I just wasn’t prepared for all the information I was about to receive.

This interview made me want to find a way to educate every consumer as to where your meats come from and what the differences are. You do get what you pay for! This also confirmed, we are harming our bodies by not being educated about where the food, specifically meats, come from that we buy and consume. Everyday they see the sunlight and only go into their barns at dusk to protect them from preditors.

Unlike factory feed lots where they are all crammed together, no nature, no barns, no where to roam. The are basically in government money factories.

As much as it hurts me to know the farm animals are also going to be on someone’s dinner table, I can accept that’s what the animals ultimate purpose is here on earth, but at least the farm raised animals live as animals should! More importantly when humans do eat these meats they are not harmful.

The trends this season touch upon so different genres, from dabbling in the 90’s with patent leather trench coats, to traveling back in time to the 1400s with renaissance inspired pieces. This selection of trends will definitely leave you feeling nostalgic and appreciative.

Trends do, come and go and it’s important to only wear those that you feel you would wear again. I am a firm believer of the “uniform”.

I wear pretty much the same style most of the time. However, I do integrate a few trend pieces each season to give my closet a fresh, progressive feel. Below are a few pivotal trends I think would be perfect addition to any women’s closet.

Capelets I am a sucker for a sleek capelet. Nothing elongates your body more than a capelet. I am glad to see this trend transcend 3 seasons now and hope to see it last through more! This should be a classic staple in everyone’s’ closet.

Chokers Now I remember the 90’s when all I wanted to do was be an actress in the Craft. The chokers and the Reality Bites style of that decade will always be part of my heart. I am so thrilled to see the choker, even thicker, making a strong comeback.

A choker looks great on anyone. No matter what your style is every type of woman can wear it and add an unexpected fierceness to any outfit.

Velvet Everything

Suiting I love suits. Everyone, no matter what style you prefer should have a tailored fitting suit that fits your personal style. Max Mara displayed the most delicious collection of pinstripe suiting that had me breathless. Every woman should have a proper fitting blazer or two in their wardrobe. Nothing brings together a look like a blazer; it also shows a sense of power. That doesn’t hurt!

Velvet has arrived this fall in a big way. From coats to shoes this majestic material is probably one of the most impactful trends of this season, and one of the easiest to incorporate to your wardrobe. You can add in a minor way with an accessory piece or bootie or you can go big with a blazer or a coat. Velvets in gem rich colors are not just the option any more, velvets in pastels and grays has graced the runways of many high-end lox fashion houses.

When is comes to incorporating new trends to your wardrobe I always urge to purchase only what you will wear.

Always keep in mind what works perfectly for your figure and you don’t need to break the bank trying to buy every single trend. Remember that a few key pieces go a long way to the goodies you already have in your closet now. And as my grandmother always said, “never throw anything away, as you never know what will be coming back in to style.” Boy, was she right. Happy Fall shopping my friends!

One Arm Tops I am in love with this trend. One arm fully exposed and one arm entirely covered. Think Mad Max meets Helmet Lang. It’s perfectly badass and asymmetrical and is a small detail with a large impact.

Pair a long one over leather leggings or a shorter version with high waisted trousers or skirt. This trend is definitely a statement piece for the season.

I hate when the summer comes to an end, but I do love the fall. The activities, the crisp weather, my TV shows coming back, and of course, the clothes! Who doesn’t love new boots and sweaters? Even though I’ve been out of school for quite some time, I always get the ‘back to school shopping’ feeling of starting fresh with my clothes at the end of the summer. Now, I’m not talking a whole new wardrobe, but incorporating a few of-the-moment, yet classic pieces to your wardrobe can make it feel fresh for the cooler months. I’ve rounded up some of my favorite, on-trend fall staples that I plan on wearing until next May!

Booties - Booties have been around for a while now, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. So, treat yourself to a good pair!

I know I wear mine daily. I have a few pair of traditional booties, so this year I opted for wedges. So comfy and the wedge gives them a slightly different feel from what I already have. The great thing about booties is they go with everything! Jeans, dresses, skirts – really, wear them with anything and everything!

Oversized cardigans - An oversized cardigan is a cozy third piece that’s perfect for fall. It can be worn over most tops from camis to button downs, and helps tie your look together for a pulled-together, yet comfy vibe. My fall uniform is a pair of ripped skinnies, booties, and an oversized cardigan.

Shirt dresses - If you’re like me, you have a hard time with dresses once it dips below 80. Most of mine are sleeveless, strapless, and way too summery. I’m always looking for the perfect in-between dress and typically don’t have much luck. With so many shirt dress options in stores lately, I’ve been in heaven! Shirt dresses are the perfect transitional dress, and also great for layering when it gets even colder. The sleeves keep it weather appropriate and they look great with booties!

Blanket scarves / ponchos - I am such a sucker for anything oversized and cozy, so what’s better than wrapping yourself in a blanket or a big poncho and having it be your outfit? There are so many great options out there for stylish ponchos and big scarves. I prefer to wear them over a basic long sleeve tee with skinny jeans and boots. Warm, stylish, and so comfortable!

Destroyed denim - I will never understand how a great pair of jeans that look like they’ve been through the ringer are usually more expensive than in-tact jeans, but it is what it is. Destroyed denim can be very classic and fashionable if done properly, and since the trend is growing, there are lots of great choices out there at reasonable price points.

Try incorporating one or two of these staples into your fall/winter wardrobe to keep your look current. Each piece is pretty versatile, so you’ll get a lot of wear of whichever you like most; and with so many options available, you’re sure to find something that suits your own personal style. Dixie’’s Hair Design

By Jenn Lombari “Owning my own salon is really my dream come true!,” states Dixie West, owner of one of Pawtucket’s newest independent businesses, Dixie’s Hair Design.

With a window full of plants and flowers from clients, beautiful hardwood floors, and all new hand-picked sinks, chairs and fixtures, and fresh, bright paint, Dixie has brought new life to the small salon that sits on the corner of Armistice Boulevard and Greenslit Avenue.

Transforming this space into her own was a labor of love for Dixie. Friends and family got together and built the space up to what would be completely Dixie’s style-bright colors, Marilyn Monroe and art work from friends and clients.

Dixie is known best in her field as a color Dixie states that she knew since junior specialist and color corrections specialist. high that she had a knack for doing friends’ hair; even dying it with Kool-Aid in the kitchen! From there, her love for the trade grew daily. After cosmetology school, she built a rather large clientele over the next decade working in a local salon. From there, she went on to rent her own room at another salon, where she continued to specialize in color and special event hair (proms, weddings, etc.), along with styles for men, women and children.

This is when she started focusing on opening her own salon.

Same Old Exercise Routines?

Making something old, something new!

Are you bored with treadmills, stationary bikes, weight machines, etc.? If you answered yes, maybe it’s time to look back to your childhood. Yes, something old can be something new- fun and healthy. Before I bring you back in time, think about this; if you are over the age of 35, you will understand when people say, “When we were kids, we were always outside playing, and most children were not obese or overweight”. Now, don’t be misled; as a fitness instructor, I am all for joining a gym, using machines, taking classes, etc., but everyone’s routine needs to be broken once in a while.

It’s mentally and physically beneficial to break routines.

Remember the days when the bell rang at the end of the school day and you couldn’t wait to go outside. You were riding bikes, playing basketball, hop scotch, roller skating, jumping rope, using a hula hoop, and the best part was, you were focusing on the fun, not the actual exercise. Wow, you were being active, staying fit and healthy and there was no effort involved. There are actual hula hoop classes which involve cardio, strength training, core, and even yoga. The point is, exercise should not, and does not have to be strenuous. It should be fun and part of your daily routine, just like when you were a kid. Most people will say, “I don’t have time like I used to as a kid.” My response is, “You don’t have time to take care of yourself ?” You take care of everything and everyone else around you, but not yourself ? Especially women- you make sure everyone else is taken care of, but not you? When you find 30 minutes a day for yourself, you feel better, have more energy, and are an overall happier, healthier human being who makes everyone around you happier. So why not make the time for you, and have some fun while you’re doing it?

Let’s start with a daily walk. Grab a friend and decide to make this part of your daily routine. Walking with a friend is one of those exercises that doesn’t feel like exercise. It turns into a social time, a therapy session, a venting session, a laughing experience, etc. Before you know it, you’ve walked miles and you weren’t thinking about the actual exercise. Get creative. Think of ways to move your body without thinking of it as exercise. Every opportunity you have to take the stairs, take them. Every opportunity you have to carry something, carry it. If you have a dog, walk your dog. Don’t deprive your dog of exercise because you don’t like it. Do it for your pet and you will be doing something for yourself at the same time. Find a few friends who may be feeling like they are in the same boat, and make it a challenge every week. Plan to meet somewhere outdoors and challenge yourselves to walk a certain distance. Bring a

5 lb, 10 lb, even 20 lb weight and carry it so many feet, then pass it off to the next person. Continue this until everyone has carried the weight and see who went the furthest.

Make it a fun competition and reward the winner each week. Push each other to run/jog just a few feet. If there are four or more of you, have a short relay. I love having my classes do a relay. I have them do this periodically. I say “Ok, everyone outside. Form two lines. When I say start, run as fast as you can to point B, turn and come back. Hit the hand of the next person in line, now they go. Repeat until everyone has gone and the winning team gets a prize.”

What does this do? It takes people out of their comfort zone and pushes them to do something they would have never done. I don’t care how fast they go. It doesn’t matter. All that matters is that they are moving, and moving at a pace they never would have had we not gone outside to run. It’s not the Olympics or any competition for that matter. It’s actually fun. They cheer each other on, laugh, and make so much noise, they wake up the neighborhood. Now think about this; if running isn’t the most child-like game, what is? Here, we are at an exercise class doing something so old, it’s new. Again, not a competition, however; when I watch these women every week, I see them trying to go faster than the week before. So maybe it is a competition; but the competition is within themselves!

Again, exercise doesn’t have to be emotionally exhausting.

For a lot of people it is because they are dreading it so much that they actually get tired before they even start. Go back to your childhood. Make it fun. No one is ever too old to move. No one is ever too old to be creative. No one is ever too old too be healthy. No one is ever too old to have fun; and that’s how you should mentally approach any exercise!

The presidential election is little more than a month away. Like all elections, this one has generated considerable interest, and, as a citizen, you may well be following it closely. But as an investor, how much should you be concerned about the outcome?

Probably not as much as you might think. Historically, the financial markets have done well – and done poorly – under both Democratic and Republican administrations.

Also, many factors affecting investment performance have little or nothing to do with the occupant of the White House. Consequently, no one can claim, with any certainty, that one candidate is going to be “better for the markets” than another one.

Still, this isn’t to say that any given presidential administration will have no effect at all on investors. For example, a president could propose changes to the laws governing investments, and if Congress passes those laws, investors could be affected.

But in looking at the broader picture, there’s not much evidence that a particular president is going to affect the overall return of your investment portfolio. As mentioned above, many factors – corporate earnings, interest rates, foreign affairs, even natural disasters – can and will influence the financial markets. But in evaluating a president’s potential effect on your investments, you also

Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel The Great Gatsby is considered one of the greatest pieces of modern American literature. Numerous times, it has been adapted for the screen; though one of the more memorable versions cast Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, and was filmed in a supremely fitting location - Newport, Rhode Island.

For those seeking a truly romantic wedding location, as well as the perfect venue for a Gatsby-esque reception, Newport makes that dream attainable. The 1974 cinematic rendition showcased Rosecliff and Marble House as Jay Gatsby’s Long Island mansions. Designed for extravagance, these Gilded Age summer homes have become sought after wedding destinations for fairy tale affairs.

Rosecliff was commissioned by Nevada silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs in 1899. Designed by famed architect Stanford White and modeled after France’s royal garden retreat, the Grand Trianon at Versailles, Rosecliff was an immediate sensation. Mrs. Oelrich knew how to host a party and Newport society flocked to many an event. One evening even featured the sensational entertainment of Harry Houdini.

Once upon a time, the Great New England Hurricane of 1938 wove a path of death and destruction through the city of Providence, with a tidal-wave like storm surge and wind gusts of more than 100 miles per hour. The storm’s effect on Rhode Island was so severe that earthquake instruments 3,000 miles away recorded it on seismographs. In 1954, Hurricane Carol caught Rhode Island by surprise and Providence suffered a great amount of concentrated damage - upwards of $41 million. Gusts of wind, at a rate of 72 to 100 miles per hour, blew into Providence, while portions of the downtown area sat under eight feet of water.

Is Your Dog Demanding and Barking at You? By: Heidi Palmer McNeil Pooch Pawsitive www.poochpawsitive.com Barking is a normal way for dogs to communicate.

Unfortunately, in the human world, it’s hard for us to understand because we don’t communicate that way!

Dogs bark for a lot of reasons: • Alert (a stranger is coming up your driveway) • Frustration (when your dog can’t get what he wants) • Boredom (when a dog is left alone outside all day) • Stress (when a dog is afraid or anxious) • Play (dogs bark when they are playing) • Greeting (dogs can be excited when you come home) • Demanding (when you have food in your hand and they want it) While it’s normal for dogs to bark, the type of barking that I can’t stand is demand barking! There’s nothing worse than a dog that demands anything and just won’t quit until you give in!

Training behavior is about consequences: If you do this, then you’ll get that. If you don’t do this, then you won’t get that. The clearer you are about consequences for your dog, the faster your dog will learn!

The basic training method to use here is ‘If you are quiet, you get stuff.’

Here are some tips for dealing with demand barking: Demanding Attention Some dogs will bark at you to keep petting them. A good rule is to ask the dog to do something else to get what they want. For example, ask the dog to sit before you pet him. Or wait until the dog is quiet (for 5 seconds) and then pet him.

ior should be that you stop making his dinner and walk away! That will get his attention! If your dog is quiet, then you will continue to make his dinner!

Demanding Play

Does your dog drop the ball in front of you and bark at you? He just wants to play! Ask your dog to do something else first (sit, a trick, lay down, etc.) before you throw the ball for him.

Be patient! If your dog has been doing this for a while, then it will take some time for your dog to learn that the rules have changed! The worst thing you can do is to lose patience and give in to your dog’s demand barking! If you subconsciously reach down to pet your dog to comfort him when he’s barking, then your dog has learned to bark for petting!

What We Can Do To Help Endangered Species

In doing research about what can be done to help save these animals, I was most pleasantly surprised to learn how today’s technology is protecting some of the world’s oldest animals. It’s called Connectivity Technology, and was developed by Cisco.

With Connected Conservation, the movement of people can actually be monitored before they attack an animal. As part of the African heritage, they use this technology to specifically protect the Rhino. They’ve brought leading-edge technology to the reserve to deliver a positive solution—and it’s not going to stop there. The solution is ongoing and will continue to improve.

Teach your friends and family about the wonderful wildlife, birds, fish and plants that live near you.

The first step to protecting endangered species is learning about how interesting and important they are.

Secure garbage cans or bins with locking lids. Feed pets indoors and lock pet doors at night to avoid attracting wild animals into your home. Reduce the use of water in your home and garden so that animals that live in or near water can have a better chance of survival. Disinfect bird baths often to avoid disease transmission. Millions of birds die every year because of collisions with windows. You can help reduce the number of collisions, simply by placing decals on the windows in your home and office. For more information on what you can do, check out these tips from the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

These protected lands provide habitat to many native wildlife, birds, fish and plants. Scientists tell us the best way to protect endangered species is to protect the places where they live. Attracting native insects like bees and butterflies can help pollinate your plants. The spread of non-native species has greatly impacted native populations around the world. Invasive species compete with native species for resources and habitat. They can even prey on native species directly, forcing native species towards extinction. Below are ten things we can do today, not someday, today, to help protect these endangered animals: 1. Learn about endangered species in your area.

5. Herbicides and pesticides may keep yards looking nice but they are in fact hazardous pollutants that affect wildlife at many levels.

Many herbicides and pesticides take a long time to degrade and build up in the soils or throughout the food chain. Predators such as hawks, owls and coyotes can be harmed if they eat poisoned animals.

Some groups of animals, such as amphibians, are particularly vulnerable to these chemical pollutants and suffer greatly as a result of the high levels of herbicides and pesticides in their habitat.

6. Slow down when driving.

Many animals live in developed areas and this means they must navigate a landscape full of human hazards. One of the biggest obstacles to wildlife living in developed areas is roads. This has been a particularly sore subject with me. I do not like seeing road kill of any kind. I always say, slow down. This is not they cycle of life. An animal killing an animal is the cycle of life. A car or human killing and animal is not the cycle of life. We are building on their land and they don’t know where to go. So, when you’re out and about, slow down and keep an eye out for wildlife.

7. Recycle and buy sustainable products.

Buy recycled paper and sustainable products like bamboo and Forest Stewardship Council wood products to protect forest species. Never buy furniture made of wood from rainforests. Recycle your cell phones because minerals used in cell phones and other electronics are mined in gorilla habitat. Minimize your use of palm oil because forests where tigers live are being cut down to plant palm plantations.

8. Never purchase products made from threatened or endangered species.

Overseas trips can be exciting and fun, and everyone wants a souvenir. But

sometimes the souvenirs are made from species nearing extinction. Avoid supporting the market in illegal wildlife including: tortoise-shell, ivory, and coral. Also, be careful of products including fur from tigers, polar bears, sea otters, and other endangered wildlife. Others are crocodile skin, live monkeys or apes, most live birds, including parrots, macaws, cockatoos and finches, some live snakes, turtles and lizards, some orchids, cacti and cycads, medicinal products made from rhinos, tiger or Asiatic black bear.

9. Harassing wildlife is cruel and illegal.

Shooting, trapping, or forcing a threatened or endangered animal into captivity is also illegal and can lead to their extinction. Don’t participate in this activity, and report it as soon as you see it to your local state or federal wildlife enforcement office. 10. Protect wildlife habitat.

Perhaps the greatest threat that faces many species is the widespread destruction of habitat. Scientists tell us the best way to protect endangered species is to protect the special places where they live. Wildlife must have places to find food, shelter, and raise their young. Logging, oil and gas drilling, over-grazing and development all result in habitat destruction. Endangered species’ habitat should be protected and these impacts minimized.

By protecting habitat, entire communities of animals and plants can be protected together. Parks, wildlife refuges, and other open space should be protected near your community. Support wildlife habitat and open space protection in your community. When you are buying a house, consider your impact on wildlife habitat.

GHOSTBUSTERS Nowadays, most old-school movies like Independence Day and Predatorare being remade. Now, Ghostbustersis getting it’s next shot at the big screen.

The new Ghostbusters remake has had a lot of differing opinions, Some people who were alive for the original think that it’s like Jaws, because Jaws is just a movie that can’t be remade. But kids from the newer generation think it’s a great remake and that the fact it’s a female cast makes it less sexualized considering the whole sexism debacle.

The movie started with a tour of Aldridge Mansion where the tour guide is almost killed by the ghost of Gertrude Aldridge. Then we follow scientist Erin Gilbert(Kristen Wiig) who finds out that her old friend Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) publishes the book they wrote on the paranormal and the science behind ghosts. She goes to find her old colleague and ends up getting caught in a ghostly adventure that ends up getting her fired from her job. She has nowhere to go except to go study the paranormal with Abby and Jillian Holtzman (Kate McKinnon).

They eventually run into a New York Metro worker named Patty (Leslie Jones) who joins their team. They also hire Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) as their (dumb as a rock) receptionist. All throughout the city the Ghostbusters are being called frauds because they aren’t believed to be real ghost catchers. But after they capture a dragon-like ghost people start to believe them.’

up and demands to see the ghost. They show it to him and then they are taken in by the FBI where they meet the New York Mayor who tells them to stop because they don’t want “mass hysteria”. But, being as stubborn and as tough as they are the Ghostbusters continue their search.

While searching for ghosts, the team comes upon a man named Rowan North (Neil Casey), who has a secret plot to free ghosts into the human world. They stop him, but in a turn of events his plot unfolds and the apocalypse comes!

The movie itself was well made and the special effects were about the same as the original. They kept a lot of the same effects like the proton blasts. It had a great scientific aspect and it showed that even though the women kept getting dissed and dissed they still stayed strong.There was a lot of jokes and comedy and scientific words but Chris Hemsworth playing Kevin was a great comedic relief. There were some great cameos like Slimer and his girlfriend, the StayPuft Marshmallow Man and the original Ghostbusters logo as well as ghosts possessing humans. Kate McKinnon did a great job playing Jillian Holtzman and she was my favorite character. Her crazy (and a bit insane) attitude was hilarious.

But some things were the same and some thing were disappointing. There wasn’t any warning about crossing the streams and I was a bit confused because there weren’t any hints as to if the original Ghostbusters were there. Bill Murray had a short cameo but he was only in the movie for 5 minutes and the other original Ghostbusters’ cameos were barely noticeable.

Overall I give Ghostbusters a 4 out of 6 diamonds. Rated PG-13 for mature content.
