Passenger Awoke on Plane to Find Herself Alone

Shop In RI Selects: Nissi Bay - Ayia Napa, Cyprus as their #1 Secret Party Getaway Nissi Bay is an area at the western edge of Ayia Napa. Many holiday companies are selling it as a separate resort these days but it is actually part of Ayia Napa although a couple of miles away from the town centre.

Nissi Bay is where you’ll find most of Ayia Napa’s best beaches. You’ll find Macronissos Beach, Landa Beach, Nissi Beach and Sandy Bay. All have gently shelving soft sand and safe swimming waters. They all also have a selection of beach bars, restaurants and waterports facilities. You may have heard of the famous Nissi Bay Beach Bar which is located at one end of Nissi Beach. This is where all the daytime beach parties and foam parties happen but it’s only on one part of the beach so if you’re not a party animal you can still enjoy Nissi Beach although all the beaches do get very busy in high season.

Threading it’s way through the area is Nissi Avenue which heads right into the centre of Ayia Napa. Along this road you will find a good selection of restaurants and bars which are family friendly. Many have children’s play areas and some have nightly entertainment in the form of tribute acts and other shows. You’ll also find supermarkets and souvenir shops.

As you pass Nissi Beach, the places to go start to thin out until you reach Landa/Macronissos beaches where you will find one or two bars and a couple of supermarkets.

This area is great for quiet, relaxing holidays or if you are holidaying with children. The majority of the accommodation in this area is hotel based rather than self catering with several very high standard and boutique hotels to choose from. Nissi Bay is also one of Cyprus’s most popular wedding destinations with ceremonies held at several of the hotels, churches and restaurants in this area.

As you reach Macronissos Beach you will find Makronissos Beach Club where huge events are held with huge international acts performing throughout the summer. You will also come to Waterworld Waterpark and then Ayia Thekla where there is a small beach and weekly market. The waterpark is also the start of the bus route which runs along Nissi Avenue into the town centre and then on to Cape Greco, Protaras and Paralimni Village.

On an uncrowded flight from Quebec City to Toronto, Tiffani Adams decided to take advantage of an empty row of seats and take a nap. The airline offered her a ride home and has apologized. Air Canada also said it is investigating. Adams says she’s still bothered by the incident: ”I haven’t got much sleep since the reoccurring night terrors and waking up anxious and afraid I’m alone locked up someplace dark,” she wrote. The baggage handler told her he couldn’t understand how it happened, and Adams said she couldn’t, either. ”When my seat (is) an inch back or my tray down flight crew take notice,” she wrote, per CTV, ”but yet you missed a person still strapped into her seat and just all go on home?”

E-cigarette maker Juul Labs, which is based in San Francisco, says it is opposed to youth vaping. The company is working on a ballot initiative that would regulate but not ban e-cigarette sales.

San Francisco is a city that celebrates its marijuana culture, but it appears deeply opposed to other vices. Last year, voters approved a ban on the sale of flavored tobacco and in 2016, a tax on sugar-sweetened drinks.

Truck Driver in Biker Crash Could Get Deported Mass. license for Volodymyr Zhukovskyy ought to have been suspended after drunk driving arrest

Something that has been taking off lately is their Newport Creamery Ice Cream Truck. They will spend two hours at a an event filled with materials for ice cream cones, ice cream cups, two scoop sundaes and “Awful Awful.”™ Pichardo said this has been gaining popularity at parties, weddings, anniversaries, sporting events, fundraisers and other events because of its novelty. The only provision is that the event must have a minimum of 75 people and submit a $375 deposit to hold a requested date, Pichardo said.

The Newport Creamery has a rich history. The company’s roots date back to 1928, when Samuel Rector, who was already in the milk business, took over a dairy on Van Zandt Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island and became a wholesale milk distributor. Four years later, in 1932, Mason Rector (Samuel’s son) joined the business. In this

year, the Company also entered the retail business, when it began to deliver milk house-to-house on Acquidneck Island. The business grew and prospered as the Company focused on providing quality service to its customers.

In 1940, the Rectors opened what was described as a “Milk Bar”, serving ice cream. The location of this “Milk Bar” is the exact location of the Company’s flagship restaurant and plant - 208 West Main Road in Middletown, Rhode Island. With the opening of this first store, the Newport Creamery’s ice cream business was now beginning.

Eventually, the Rectors sold the Newport Creamery’s restaurant and operations. After a few tough years for the Company, the entire company was sold at auction after the previous owners filed bankruptcy.

The Jan Companies purchased the Company in December 2001, and have owned and operated it since. There are currently 12 locations (10 in Rhode Island: Providence, Middletown, Cranston, Barrington, Newport Mall, Warwick, Warwick Mall, Coventry Greenville and North Kingstown; and two in Massachusetts, Seekonk and Fall River).

CLAM CAKES AND CHOWDER

In 1987, quahogs, which can be found beneath the sand at any of RI’s beaches, were named the official shellfish of the Ocean State. The Native American Wampanoag tribe was known for using the purple interiors of the quahog shell as currency or wampum, but European settlers didn’t have much use for the tough quahog outside of making chowder.

The two most popular types of clam chowder (oftentimes pronounced “Chowda” in our “little neck” of the woods) are the cream-based New England version made with quahogs, as well as tender bites of potatoes and Manhattan clam chowder, which is also made with quahogs, but is red-based due to the addition of tomatoes and tomato paste. Without milk or cream, the chowder has a much thinner broth and often includes other vegetables like carrots. It is believed that the New England style of chowder was 14 ShopInRI

first introduced to the region by French, Nova Scotian, or British settlers and became a common dish in the area by the 1700s. Chowder continued to gain popularity throughout the years and, according to What’s Cooking America, was being served in Boston’s Ye Olde Union Oyster House (the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the country) in 1836.

New England clam chowder is defined as “a thick chowder made from clams, potatoes, onions, sometimes salt pork, and milk or cream.” The Manhattan version has a broth that is much thinner than the thick New England version and while it also includes potatoes, most Manhattan-style chowders boast a variety of vegetables like carrots, celery, onion, and garlic for added flavor. The first recipe for “Manhattan Clam Chowder” appeared in a 1919 cookbook, with Italian immigrants in New York and Portuguese im-

migrants in Rhode Island likely being the first to decide to use tomatoes for the soup in the mid-1800s. While the name “Manhattan” stuck, the soup has little to do with New York City’s most popular borough.

In Little Rhody, clam cakes and chowder are a perfect combination and a must option on menus of any clam shack throughout the state for beach goers and many others, who visit the Ocean State. Legend has it that the first place in the Ocean State to serve the delicious combination of clam cakes and chowder was in 1920, at Aunt Carrie’s, a popular Narragansett eaterie, where people from all over still flock to during the summer months. The clam shacks first owner, Carrie Cooper, grew up on a Connecticut farm and when at the Rhode Island shore with her children, she used the quahogs that they collected, first in a chowder recipe, and then as a substitute for the corn in her fritter recipe; hence, the creation of clam cakes.

Rocky Point, Little Rhody’s long running amusement park first opened in 1847. The park’s dining establishment, Rocky Point Shore Dinner Hall also served clam cakes as one of its many menu options, although much smaller than the version of Aunt Carrie’s and other clam shacks such as Champlin’s and George’s of Galilee.

The donut hole sized fritters were offered along with as much clam chowder as one could eat. It remains unclear as to when Rocky Point Shore Dinner Hall first served its clam cakes, but their popularity at this longingly remembered state landmark, brings back special memories to anyone who visited the park until it closed in 1995.

The ingredients for clam cakes are flour, water, baking powder, clam juice, and chopped or minced clams. The dough is then shaped into balls and deep fried until they reach a golden brown color. The unusual shapes that often occur in clam cakes result from the clams producing lumps as they rise to the edges as they are cooking, causing small, irregular bumps to appear.

The best clam cakes are the ones that are crisp and crunchy, while the inside is moist and chewy, with a taste of quahogs in every bite. Clam cakes are often served in a greasy paper bag, most delicious when served hot, and even tastier when dunked into clam chowder. Listed are a few of the best RI has to offer.

CHINESE PORK RIB RECIPE WORKS FOR BEEF, TOO

Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails When I was a kid, no visit to a Chinese restaurant was complete without an order of those sweet, greasy and radioactive red spare ribs. They came in that foil-lined bag that barely kept them warm until my dad got us home to devour them along with the other classics: fried dumplings, and wonton soup with fried wontons on the side. I still see those ribs on menus even today, and despite my cravings, I just don’t eat fire-engine-red-dyed food anymore.

Imagine my excitement when I saw a recipe for those classic spare ribs in a food magazine. I figured I’d just make them without the food coloring.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup hoisin sauce 1/4 cup soy sauce 3 tablespoons dry marsala wine 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped or through a press

2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon Chinese powder

2 lbs. beef flap (skirt steak or hanger steak works, too)

I don’t think I’ve ever had all the ingredients to make a recipe exactly as written, and this was no exception. For one thing, the original recipe called for dry sherry. I didn’t have it so I used dry marsala wine. I didn’t even have the pork ribs, so I substituted a beautiful slab of grass-fed beef flap. The results were still delicious. But feel free to use pork ribs, as originally intended. And if you can’t find beef flap, a cut like skirt steak is a good substitute.

To make the marinade, combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, marsala wine, garlic, sugar and Chinese five spice in a bowl. Mix well.

Trim the excess fat and silver skin off the beef flap, and if it’s thick, slice it lengthwise to make a thinner piece of meat about 1/4" to 1/2" thick.

Place the meat in the marinade, making sure it gets well coated on all sides. Marinate the meat at room temperature for about 60 minutes. If you have a thicker cut of meat, you can marinate it longer.

Drain and discard the marinade.

Heat a cast iron pan and add a little lard or oil. Place the beef flap pieces in the pan, searing well on one side before flipping over to the other. If the meat is thin, you can cook it to a medium-rare right there on the stove top. You might need to finish the beef in a 350-degree oven if you’re using a thicker cut.

The meat also cooks beautifully under the broiler or on the grill. If using the broiler, just watch out for flare-ups from the fat. It can get smokey. I literally picked up my toaster oven and moved it under the hood of my stove so that the smoke was sucked up and vented out. (The first time I broiled, my kitchen filled with smoke!)

To make the Chinese ribs with this marinade: simply place the ribs and the marinade in a Ziploc bag at room temperature for at least 60 minutes. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees, and place the ribs on a baking sheet with a wire rack on top. Save the marinade…and baste the ribs with it every 30 minutes, turning the ribs over as you do so. Cook until the ribs are done, about 2 hours.

Local Farms Are Where It’s At This Season

By Jenn Lombari I don’t need to tell you how important it is to shop local and support local businesses but I’m going to because it’s kinda my thing. This time of year, local produce is where it’s at! There are so many farms throughout the state selling fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products…Most of these places only have a few months to make their money and then that is it until the ground thaws and they can prepare again for another season. And let’s hope the weather and climate is on their side so they get a good crop! When you buy produce, meat, or dairy at your big corporate grocery store, you think you’re picking out the freshest items that they have. You smell it, squeeze it, check the use or freeze by date, but how fresh is it? If it’s even grown in the US, it’s coming from somewhere warm. Anywhere warm is a pretty good distance away from Rhode Island. So let’s use produce as an example. It’s grown and then harvested. It then has to be processed and shipped. That’s a long ride in a truck by the time it makes it to where ever it will be sold. So how many days has it been since that living product was picked, processed, shipped, shelved, and then makes it to your plate? Too long.

There’s a lot to say about something that seems to be so mundane, but iced coffee seems to be all the hype these days. Is it because more people are drinking it, or that there are so many flavors and varieties offered? There are plenty of places in Rhode Island to fuel anyone’s iced coffee addiction. Just about every corner of every main drag has at least one, if not more iced coffee shops.

For some, a regular Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks iced java is not only sufficient, but the only kind they will chug, but there are so many more options that seem to have caught on, big time, with the current generation of iced coffee lovers. Another change from years past is that today’s favorite cold brews are not just created with coffee.

mine what they like? The answer is simple. I have no idea. Some seem to enjoy testing out all of the different choices and flavors, but then there are those who stay loyal to just their one and only, the one they may have created with flavors that satisfy their taste buds, and will not order another kind, no matter what else is offered.

Ashley Erling is the Executive Producer of The Rhode Show and Director of Local Content for WPRI 12 and its sister stations. She is heavily involved in the community, and enjoys spending her time volunteering for various local organizations and of course, shopping. She is currently on the Board of Directors for STYLEWEEK Northeast and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Below is a day in the life of this local superstar who rises with the sun.

4:00amGet up. Yes, that’s right! 4AM. Some people are good at organizing their lives the night before, but I’ve always been more of a last minute person, so I do it all in the morning. When the alarm goes off, the first thing I do is make coffee and watch the news so I’m informed and prepared for the day. Then I put on my makeup (most days involve a full face), and decide what to wear.

6:00am- Arrive at work. The beginning of the day is generally returning emails, and looking through headlines and social media to see what’s trending that day. Much of what I see will end up on the show that day in one form or another.

7:00am- the rest of The Rhode Show crew arrives and we go over the rundown for the show that day, as well as what other shoots and obligations we have so everyone is on the same page. After the rundown meeting it’s a whirlwind of getting ready for the show, sending out various assignments, organizing information for other meetings and appointments during the day, and writing content for our website.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

9:00am- Show time! The best time of the day! From 9-10am The Rhode Show is live, with various guests, interviews, cooking and an occasional celebrity all happening in our little studio Mon-Fri. 11:00am- Each day after the show is a little different. Some days I might have a taping for my ”Eye on RI” segment.

Others I will hold meetings with my co-workers in different departments to go over upcoming content for The Rhode Show or our other local programming, as well as schedule and confirm upcoming segments.

1:00pm- Coffee part 2! I tend to get a second cup in the afternoon to give myself that extra push. In the afternoon I usually like to give myself a little creative brainstorming time if the day allows to come up with show content in more of a big picture type of way. I also try to schedule some offsite meetings in the afternoons to switch things up so I’m not just sitting at my desk all day. I have more energy when I’m busy and move around a lot.

3:00pm- I head to the gym. A couple of times a week I work with a trainer, while others I might go to a group exercise class or just go for a run on my own. As much as I don’t enjoy working out, I’ve learned it’s very important for me mentally to take that time for myself.

5:00pm- Dinner. I cook for myself every night; typically some form of fish and veggies. I do my best to eat ”clean” during the week. I usually have one or two nights a week that I might have work or charity related events to attend, but I try to keep them to a minimum. Those nights I will indulge in a cocktail.

7:30pm- Mindless TV to fully get my mind in a neutral spot followed by bed around 8. Yes, I have the bedtime of kindergartener. What can I say? I’ve always been the type of person who needs 8 hours to perform at my best the following day, so that’s what I do!

Returns This September With More Out-of-State Design Talent When STYLEWEEK Northeast returns to the Rhode Island Convention Center September 18-21, 2019, the fashion event will showcase 20 designers, mixed of veterans and newcomers. The SEED Student Design Challenge will be returning on September 19th. STYLEWEEK designers will feature a mix of avant-garde, minimalist and wearable fashions while incorporating a new look for the Accessory Showcase and Cocktail Hour adding designer selling showcases. This season’s STYLEWEEK will open with an emerging designer night on Wednesday, September 18th.

On Thursday, September 19, the SEED Student Design Challenge will be returning with university students from MassArt and RISD, followed by Michigan-based designer Mikayla Frick and her minimalist creations.

Friday, September 20, will welcome Project Runway alum and Boston-based Cornelius Ortiz who will unveil his women’s made-to-measure fashions. Returning Rhode Island designer, Brianna Moon and her domestically made sustainable pieces will be featured on the runway on closing night, Saturday, September 21. The last time Brianna Moon featured women’s wear at STYLEWEEK was in 2011.

Closing the week on Saturday, September 21, RISD student, Zoe Grinfeld presented by RMO Public Relations will return with her Spring/Summer 2020 collection, in addition to five other designers, including STYLEWEEK newcomer, Pittsburgh-based Anna Lemley, ending the night with the finale show, veteran and Project Runway alum, Chicagobased Peach Carr, presented by Rhode Island Medical Imaging.

Each night will feature the Accessory Showcase and Cocktail Hour, highlighting designers, accessories, and boutiques. Tickets go on sale August 15th.

The Fort Adams Bay Walk is a 2.5-mile loop around the perimeter of Fort Adams State Park, providing unparalleled scenic views of Newport's Harbor, the Newport Bridge and Narragansett Bay. Rhode Islanders flock to Lincoln Woods State Park in Lincoln for its freshwater beach, fishing, athletic fields and stables. Lincoln Woods Trail is a 3.4 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Lincoln, Rhode Island that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. In addition, the park has one of the most enjoyable riding areas in all of Rhode Island.

At 627 acres it may seem a little on the small size, especially considering that a lot of that area is taken up by Olney Pond,

a deep water lake. But don't let its size fool you. Lincoln Woods hosts some of the best riding in the state.

32 miles via the Blackstone River Bikeway and the East Bay Bike Path, a ribbon of smooth riding, scenic views and relaxing recreational opportunities.

Located in Charlestown, 227-acre Ninigret Park features a stateof-the-art playground, ball fields, ten-speed bike course, tennis and basketball courts, picnic areas and a freshwater swimming pond with a public beach. The Ninigret Park Wildlife Refuge is home to a variety of hiking trails. A 9/10 mile bicycle course is available for bicycles, walkers, rollerblading, jogging, etc. The bike course is open to the public (when not reserved for racing or special events).

Blackstone River Bikeway-According to the Rhode Is-

The National Trust for Historic Preservation called Providence’s Roger Williams Park one of the finest urban parks in the United States. Featuring more than 400 acres of picturesque grounds, the park is perfect for road races, biking and other outdoor events. The park is home to the Providence Cyclocross Festival and is considered a world-class cyclocross venue. Roger Williams Pond Trail is a 3.8 mile moderately trafficked loop trail that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until November. The Roger Williams Park Pump Track is a dirt course consisting of rollers and berms for riders to propel themselves through the course using their body weight or “pumping” rather than pedaling. It can be fun for all age levels and many many types of off-road bicycles such as Mountain, cyclocross, and BMX bikes. The Pump Track is open daily from 7am-9pm and is closed from first freeze until thaw. Surrounding the Pump Track is an Off-Road Bike Trail. The trail runs through the woods on either side of the track and gives riders a chance to practice their off-road riding skills. The trail has a number of challenging elements, including tight turns, technical downhill sections, off-camber sections, mixed-trail terrain and natural obstacles.

Riders on mountain bikes, cyclocross bikes, and other off-road bikes will get to put their skills to the test on this trail.

While the path ends in Cumberland, experienced riders can find their way to Pawtucket Landing in Pawtucket and the start of the on-road segment to Providence through a series of on-road markers called "sharrows."

Accessing Rhode Island through its many scenic bike paths gives visitors a spectacular view of the Ocean State. Cyclists may bike

East Bay Bike Path-According to the RI Department of Transportation, the East Bay Bike Path is the first multi-town bike path we built in Rhode Island. It travels 14.5 miles from India Point Park in Providence to Independence Park in Bristol, passing many state and local parks and recreation areas. Connecting neighborhoods, schools and business districts, the path is popular with commuting cyclists heading into Providence.

The path follows the former Providence and Bristol Railroad and is mostly flat, with the exception of a large hill as the path switches from an alignment alongside Veterans Memorial Parkway in East Providence to the former rail right-of-way.

Erica Guatieri, CPAGUATIERI, CPA ERICA Mark Berger ProvesPROVES ThereTHERE Is LifeISAfter Day LIFE Tax AFTER TAXByDAY April 15th came and went with most people immersing themselves with different projects. It’s just another one of 365 days in a calendar year for much of the public.

Some professions—involving public service, medical and military—are not afforded that luxury because they are on-call all day, every day.

The same can be said for certified public accountants, or CPAs. There is no rest for these professionals after the federal tax day passes. In fact, they are just getting started for the deluge of work that comes after April 15th.

That is when Erica Hope Guatieri, CPA MST of EHG LLC, located on 67 Cedar Street in Providence, aids stragglers, who file their personal and/or corporate tax returns late, compile corporate tax figures for small and large businesses, and/or direct her clients into better tax alternatives that will help them save time and money.

“I get all types of clients, from the ones who have planned out everything throughout the year, to those who wait until the last minute and are panicking that they will not make the federal and/or state deadlines,” said Guatieri, who began her practice last November after more than a decade in a Providence-based regional CPA firm. “My goal with clients is getting them what they are entitled to without taking shortcuts. Accounting is something that has been a passion of mine and something that I

picked up rather quickly growing up.”

That passion of hers began as a senior at Saint Raphael Academy in Pawtucket, where she picked up accounting as an elective course. Guatieri said that she had a knack for it early on, and when she won the state’s High School Business Award in April 1999, that fueled her desire to learn more about the industry. Her award included a trip to the State House for a reception that included the then-General Treasurer Paul Tavares and a host of other dignitaries. Guatieri added that her late aunt, Loren Guatieri, also inspired her to pursue this profession when she received her CPA license posthumously.

After graduating from high school, Guatieri attended Rhode Island College to pursue her degree, and then transferred to Bryant College (now University), where she graduated with a degree in accounting and minored in communications. Before graduating, she interned at Kahn, Litwin, Renza & Co., Ltd., where she accepted a position with them after college in the accounting and auditing department, eventually working her way up to a senior management position in the small and emerging business group.

As the years passed, Guatieri said that she saw the CPA profession evolving in a different direction. With the guidance of several mentors, Guatieri considered striking out on her own. She was filled with excitement and fear as finding clients, being on her own, and of course, executing her vision, became her short-term goals. She said that those concerns were put to rest after deciding this was her next step.

“I wanted to do something that would inspire others, while excelling within my career, and giving back to my community,” she stated. “I wanted to own my own firm that specializes in tax preparation, accounting and consulting services.”

Guatieri said that her decision was not one that was spur-ofthe-moment. It actually took her two years before concluding that being her own boss made the most sense.

“I strive to help small businesses and start-up companies thrive and grow, which is what drove me to strike out on my own,” Guatieri said. “I pride myself on providing my clients with big firm services in a small firm setting. My commitment is to personally serve each client to help them grow

When Guatieri is not in the office, she can be found serving on the Board of Rhode Island Society of CPAs. TIME TO TALK DIETS

Do diets work? What is the best one to follow? How often should I go on a diet? All of these questions and only one answer. No diet can compare to a lifestyle change. I have heard over and over, “I just need to kick-start myself and then I’ll make changes.”

Yes, diets may work in the beginning because you are making a major change to what you normally feed your body; of course things changes are going to happen. You will lose weight. I don’t want to name all of the diets specifically, but I can tell you this, as soon as you go off most diets, the weight will come back and probably more. Why does this happen?

Here’s what people don’t understand. When we diet, our bodies will respond to the occurring changes by dropping weight. The problem is, once we end or “go off” the diet, our bodies think they are in “starvation mode,” and anything they are now fed, will be stored as fat. No one can live on any diet forever. Once you go back to your normal eating habits, it’s over! I am so passionate about this because I’ve seen diets fail time after time. I have personal training clients who ask me all the time about certain diets.

There is one specific diet, without mentioning its name, that actually has you take an appetite suppressant and also includes many restrictions. Of course, this will enable weight loss, temporarily.

You’re shocking your body. As soon as you are done with the “diet,” anything and everything your body is fed will be stored as fat. It’s a lifestyle change that needs to happen and will work for a long duration! It’s everything in moderation. Yes, it is true that carbs and sugar are the enemies.

By cutting the amount of carbs and sugar from your diet, you will lose weight. I am not saying

to remove carbs and sugar completely. We do need some carbs, and even sugar, in our diets. The problem is that we are oftentimes on a carb sugar overload. Carbs are not necessary at every meal.

We also need to educate ourselves about good carbs versus bad carbs. Carbs and sugar do not know how to burn, so they immediately store themselves as fat. Protein and fiber burn, so they are not stored as fat. How-

ever; I do believe we need a balance of everything. My suggestion is this: do not eat carbs at every meal. Learn what carbs are good for you and which are not. A basic rule is that any white carb, such as bread, rice, etc., will cause weight gain. Fruit carbs are okay. Do not believe that all carbs are bad, as some diets proclaim to be true. Fruits are natural. The sugar and carbs in fruits are natural and absolutely okay to eat.

Anything natural is healthy for our bodies, while processed foods are not healthy.

What this means is that animals are fed unnatural, hormonal foods that we, in turn, put into our bodies. I am convinced that this is why there is an epidemic of cancer, child diseases and death. It’s not natural. Farm raised meats and fish are natural and that’s the food we should be eating. I cannot stress enough that diets don’t work for the long term. They are a marketing tool and target for people who need and want to lose weight. Food is an enjoyment and a need, but it should not be abused and/or used as an escape. I believe that food addiction can be just as dangerous as alcohol, smoking or drugs. We need to know when we are full and when we should stop eating. The problem is, if there is

food in front of us, we just keep eating. We don’t take a second for our brains to tell our stomachs that they are full.

Since diets don’t work, we truly need to learn how to eat and when to realize when we are full. We need to learn the meaning of moderation and what carbs are good for us, and which are not. Real sugar is healthier than all of the substitutes, however; your sugar intake needs to be monitored and controlled. This is not rocket science. It is caring about your health, which in turn, is a fringe benefit for your weight.

I get it. People don’t love to exercise. If you don’t exercise your body you will NOT be in the best shape and health of your life. Why wouldn’t you want that?

RHODE ISLAND’S ONLY HIMALAYAN SALT CAVE

PJ and Steve Johnson, and Casey McGuire, are celebrating their recent one year anniversary of opening Saltitude in Lincoln, RI. None of them had worked in the holistic wellness field prior to this. They were all working in offices, and other buildings, breathing in stale air every day. It was when they took a trip to a salt cave on the NY border that they realized they could re-create their own version of this, and that’s exactly what they did. They had always meditated as a family and decided to bring it into the experience as well. This is something that sets them apart from other Himalayan salt caves. Most are typically used just for physical health purposes, but Saltitude sets out to create a full body health experience focusing on holistic health and wellness.

Do you think about your body in a negative way and tell yourself you need to make better choices because you don’t feel good enough? What if you chose to eat healthy and exercise because you love your body the way it is here and now? Exercise is a proven stress reducer. Take some time in your day to dedicate to movement. Walking is a great way to clear your mind and take care of your body. With the warmer weather here, take a walk around the neighborhood or explore some of the beautiful places here in New England. There are many trails with beautiful scenery to enjoy.

Take the family with you if you like, or do it by yourself, whatever makes you happy! As I always tell my clients, fitness doesn’t have to be hours in the gym. At least 20-30 minutes each day is an excellent start.

Choose healthier foods because you love yourself and want to feel like your best possible self. Remember, food is fuel, not punishment.

Try not to think of all the foods you can’t eat and think of all the delicious foods you can eat that are good for your body. Feeling guilty about indulging is counter productive. Enjoy a treat here and there and eat lots of nutritious meals.

Take things day by day and try not to be too hard on yourself. Loving and caring for yourself is a process that begins with patience and practice.

Steven Palumbo

A World Class Entertainer Thriving in Rhode Island.

If you live in the Ocean State and are familiar with RI’s music scene, then you have most likely heard of professional vocalist/entertainer, Steven Palumbo. He was just 9 years old when he first began singing, and by age 11, he was performing arias in the Operas Tosca and Carmen with a NYC-based opera company at the former Ocean State Theater in Providence.

Now at age 47, Steven has been performing professionally throughout New England and other parts of the country for the past 26 years.

FISHING FOR SOME FUN IN

RHODE ISLAND

For some anglers, fishing provides not only entertainment, adventure, camaraderie, and a challenge, but also offers many physical and mental health benefits. Going fishing outdoors increases your vitamin D, which helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in your body, keeping your bones and teeth healthy. The peacefulness of being out in nature and near water can lower anxiety and instill a sense of calm. For some, fishing can become a healthy addiction that cannot be explained. Even when a catch is not achieved on any given day of fishing, those that have a love for the sport can be found at their favorite fishing spot again and again.

To fish in any of the bodies of water in Little Rhody, it is mandatory for most that they obtain a permit or license. The licenses typically expire on December 31 of each year and must be renewed annually.

There are many types of fishing licenses available in Rhode Island, and the type that is required is dependent on if the fisherman is fishing as a recreation or for profit. The types of necessary permits also depend on which bodies of water the fishing activity takes place. Recreational fishing licenses allow fishermen to participate in activities related to fishing throughout all marine water throughout Rhode Island.

Sport Fishing licensing requirements are set by the RI Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) and depending on which body of water the fishing will take place, will determine the type of necessary license.

Anyone of age 15 and older must possess and maintain either a commercial or recreational fishing license to be allowed to fish in the Ocean State. Furthermore, both residents and 58 ShopInRI

nonresidents must possess either a freshwater or saltwater fishing license, with the necessary type being dependent upon which RI waters they are fishing. However, residents and nonresidents do not need a game fishing license if they are fishing without utilizing a hook and line or spear (i.e. powerhead). Commercial fishing licenses are only required for commercial anglers in saltwater.

In order to obtain a saltwater or freshwater fishing license in RI, anglers must be at least 16 years of age and meet certain residency requirements. A non-resident freshwater fishing license is also available. Fishermen must purchase a separate saltwater and freshwater fishing permit depending on the purpose of their fishing. A National Saltwater Angler Registration or recreational saltwater fishing license from a corresponding state will suffice as appropriate licensure. Rhode Island honors recreational saltwater fishing licenses from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maine.Commercial licenses are available to residents and nonresidents, as well, and must include necessary approvals.

RI freshwater fishing licenses are available in different types to both residents and nonresidents. Below is a list of the variety of available freshwater fishing permits.

A saltwater fishing license is available to resident and nonresident anglers in both annual and temporary forms.

Commercial fishing permits for marine fishing are available in numerous types.

Recreational and commercial RI fishing license holders may be able to catch freshwater and saltwater species such as trout, northern pike, chain pickerel, striped bass, American shad, and Atlantic sturgeon.

Fishermen must obtain a freshwater fishing permit to catch minnow, and a trout stamp must be purchased in addition to the basic freshwater fishing permit to authorize the possession of trout, salmon or charr in RI bodies of water and even for catching and releasing those varieties of fish. For commercial fishing license holders, shellfish, crustacean and finfish approvals must be purchased before they are allowed to catch those types of fish from RI waters.

A recreational freshwater fishing license is valid from March 1 until the end of February each year, unlike a saltwater license, which expires annually on December 31. However, multi-day licenses expire following the completion of consecutive fishing days and permanent licenses last indefinitely. Conversely, commercial saltwater fishing licenses are valid for a full year.

Anglers must renew their commercial fishing permits between January 1 and February 28 of each year.

For freshwater fishing in RI, a license for residents costs $18 and for non-residents, the cost is $35. A recreational saltwater license costs $7 for RI residents and $10 for nonresidents.

Seven-day saltwater fishing licenses are only $5 for both residents and nonresidents. However, the commercial license price is dependent on the amount of endorsements and type of license anglers wish to purchase.

A fishing license can be obtained on-line at dem.ri.gov/huntfish, from authorized agents such as bait and tackle shops, retail department stores, as well as some city and town clerk offices.

According to Kate Talerico of Step Outside, below are some of the favorites in freshwater fishing places in Rhode Island.

• WATCHAUG POND, CHARLESTOWN, RI Come on a dewy morning or a foggy sunset to Watchaug Pond, nestled at the edge of Burlingame State Park. Use the boat ramp to launch your boat into the water from your car, or stay on shore and fish from the rocky crags on the side.

You’ll quickly fall in love with this spot. Need some gear or a boat before for your adventure? Stop in at Breachway Bait & Tackle in Charlestown, Rhode Island. Here, they have salt and freshwater fishing gear as well as apparel and kayak and canoe rentals.

• OLNEY POND AT LINCOLN WOODS STATE PARK Head out to Lincoln Woods State Park for a beautiful, wooded forest retreat that also boasts a popular fishing destination.

Olney Pond consists of 126 acres of fishable space, which will give you and your fellow fishermen plenty of room to spread out. If you’re in need of some bait, Ocean State Tackle in Providence is your best bet!

• CARBUNCLE POND, COVENTRY, RI The 39-acre Carbuncle Pond is located in the Nicholas Farm Management Area. This idyllic location is well-loved among anglers and has a boat launch for those looking to get out onto the water. You will find a healthy population of trout in this pond.

• THE WOOD RIVER AT THE OLD STONE DAM, RICHMOND/HOPKINTON, RI

• STAFFORD POND, TIVERTON, RI

Right at the boundary of Richmond and Hopkinton, the Wood River offers great fishing spots whether you are standing on shore, kayaking, or working out of a canoe. Fishermen here typically find great trout, among other types of fish.

This 480-acre reservoir is one of the largest in Rhode Island.

At the north end of the pond, fishermen will find a few sizable coves but the majority of the pond is wide open. The pond is almost two miles long and is stocked with trout several times a year.

Financial Dos and Dont’s If You Plan to Have Kids Later in Life Many couples are choosing to start families later in life compared to their parents and grandparents.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the mean age of first-time mothers is rising, from 25 years old in 2009 to 26.3 years old just five years later.1 And, increasingly mothers are waiting to have their first child at age 35 or older. This trend has financial implications. On one hand, parents may be more financially secure and have clear priorities for the future. On the other hand, these parents are closer to retirement, so balancing kids’ expenses with saving can be a juggle.

If you choose to have your first child later in life, here are four key dos and don’ts to help you manage your finances with confidence:

Do establish a solid financial foundation.

Your household expenses will likely increase once you’re paying for childcare, additional checkups at the doctor or dentist and other items for your child. With this in mind, consider using the discretionary income you have today to shore up your financial position.

Prioritize paying off student loans, build an emergency fund (three-to-six months-worth of expenses is a good benchmark), and consider paying more toward your mortgage if you’re a homeowner.

Do boost your savings.

Creating a habit early of saving for major goals can help you maintain your savings momentum while you are focused on adapting to your new addition. Harness the power of compound interest by contributing to your retirement accounts with each paycheck and setting aside funds for major goals, such as an annual vacation or home remodel.

Don’t prioritize your child’s education over retirement.

Will you be making tuition payments in your final years of work or in retirement? If this is a possibility, it’s imperative that you create a plan to balance saving for both goals right away. The reality is many couples need to push back their retirement date, figure out how to earn additional income with a different job or cut back their travel plans to pay for their child’s education.

While it’s understandable that you want to provide for your child, keep in mind that health, layoffs or other circumstances outside of your control could change your retirement date. Your child has other options to pay for college – including scholarships, loans and work-study programs – that are not available to you if your retirement savings come up short.

Don’t forget to update your estate plan.

Ensuring you have adequate insurance coverage becomes a bigger priority when you have a child in the picture. If you or your partner were to sustain an injury or pass away prematurely, you want to have confidence that your disability and life insurance coverage will cover the financial commitments and goals you have for your family. Reassess your policies and meet with a financial advisor if you want a second opinion on what the right amount of coverage is for you. Additionally, consider purchasing longterm care insurance to cover potential health care expenses in retirement. Policies are typically more affordable when you apply at a younger age so it’s worth taking the time to see if securing coverage makes sense for you.

MOVIE REVIEW: VAULT

Theo Rossi and Clive Standen star alongside Don Johnson and Chazz Palminteri in this Rhode Island gangland drama.

Like a long-lost companion piece to Nicholas Pileggi’s Wiseguy, writer-director Tom DeNucci’s Vault provides a notably less glamorous take on a northeastern crime syndicate from the perspective of assorted Mafia sidekicks caught on the outside but desperate to get in. Like Pileggi’s true-crime book and Martin Scorsese’s adaptation Goodfellas, this account of the 1975 Providence, R.I., $30 million Bonded Vault Heist is based in part on actual events. Although this Lionsgate theatrical and VOD release appears positioned to capture the imagination of many still enthralled by the excesses of organized crime’s late-century heyday, it looks unlikely to become another classic of the genre.

Knocking over pawnshops and jewelry stores has become routine for the Providence-area holdup team consisting of longtime buddies Deuce (Theo Rossi) and Chucky (Clive Standen). Now however, they’re ready for a bigger score, so why not rob a bank, or better yet, two banks in the same day? Well it turns out that small-time jobs are not the best preparation for the big time and now they’re cooling their heels in the pen. Like any ambitious young men though, they know that getting ahead is all about who you know, so Chucky jumps at the opportunity to provide muscle behind bars for Gerry “The Frenchman” Ouimette (Don Johnson). Deuce however isn’t so enthused about getting involved with the right-hand man for Providence Mafia boss Raymond Patriarca (Chazz Palminteri), a notorious gangster and executioner who comfortably continues running his racketeering, narcotics and extortion operations from inside his well-appointed jail cell.

Gerry says he has bigger plans for them though and once they’re released they discover what he means: taking down a private vault secreted inside a Providence fur storage facility that the Patriarca Mafia family and their criminal associates use to stash their cash and stolen loot. Relishing the chance for a big score, Deuce and Chucky realize they’ll need a bigger crew to deal with nearly 150 large safe-deposit boxes locked inside the cage. Fortunately Gerry’s recruited a half-dozen other pros, which helps the robbery go down smoothly after they neutralize the facility’s staff and force the owner to open the vault so they can thoroughly ransack it.

Even the gang doesn’t know how much they get away with, although it turns out to be one of the largest heists in U.S. history, but they turn most of it over to Gerry while they lie low and hope for the heat to dissipate.

DeNucci emphasizes a low-key tone for the picture, which is as much a buddy movie tracking the evolution of Deuce and Chucky’s relationship and eventual falling out as it is a classic caper. By devoting the first half to the pair’s ill-fated early exploits and Deuce’s developing relationship with Karyn (Samira Wiley), his constant if sometimes reluctant supporter, DeNucci seeks to demonstrate the inviolability of their bonds. This devotion is contrasted with the mobsters, often contending among themselves and their Irish gangster rivals for criminal supremacy.

Preparation for the robbery and the actual heist get deliberately played down, sacrificing a sense of urgency that slackens the pacing, which bogs down in the third act as Deuce and Karyn go on the run. The absence of any significant law-enforcement activity or a readily identifiable FBI antagonist also diminish the magnitude of the threat they’re facing, even if a Mafia assassination campaign to eliminate members of the heist team does succeed in slightly upping the paranoia quotient.

Rossi and Standen strive to impress as a dynamic crime duo, but they’re not that persuasive even when they’re hauling off millions of dollars in loot, lacking any real expertise or menace. In a role that’s more functional than flashy, Johnson comes across as a born operator looking for a big payday who hasn’t got much to show for his ambitions. If Palminteri ever gets another vehicle as suited to his talents as The Usual Suspects it’ll be equally memorable, but this isn’t it, evidenced by his laid-back coasting through most of his scenes.

DeNucci has a good sense for period detail, costuming and accessorizing the cast with a color palette ranging from earthy yellow through fashionable beige to muddy brown. Stylistically though, the film doesn’t have much in common with its most distinctive progenitors, missing an opportunity to re-create an authentic ‘70s aesthetic.

Mold?

Mold. Probably one of the things that any home or property owner cringes at the thought of as it relates to existing within their living or operating space.

Mold can create a plethora of health challenges.

I, myself am very fortunate (knock on wood…) when it comes to health overall but am apparently allergic to some rare type of mold that shows itself with exterior climate changes and triggers an annoying cough that sounds absolutely horrible. It also seems to surface when I am in certain types of buildings for extended periods of time (think at an all-day seminar in a hotel).

Over the past almost 25 years since I have known of the cough’s existence, I still have not found a solution for it and believe me, I have tried seemingly EVERYTHING! Weird. But if all I get is a nuisance cough out of it, I consider myself lucky. Some have much more severe reactions to mold.

Now, imagine if a harmful mold were lurking in your home and you were sleeping with it around you every night.

This scenario is not good for healthy people, never even mind if your body is prone to have highly adverse reactions to exposure to certain types of mold to begin with.

We certainly run into mold in homes and businesses often enough. Usually the mold we come across stems its growth from either moisture or humidity.

Mold can begin from a leak that has/had allowed exterior water to come into a home or building for a length of time and congre-

gated in an area that did not allow it to dry properly.

I have seen other instances (one recently) where mold grows with a sudden drastic change in the environment of a building (think old, uninsulated home that all of a sudden gets vinyl siding installed on its exterior and a new roof put on without any type of proper venting or internal humidity control installed at the same time).

There are a quite a number of things that can stimulate mold growth.

If you spot mold and are curious as to whether the mold is potentially harmful, there are companies that can come out and run tests to tell you if the mold should be a cause for concern.

I have found that most folks spotting any type of mold, however, seem to want to mitigate it as soon as possible though and typically could care less about the extent of its “technical” harm.

The thought of mold anywhere around the home is stomach turning for the typical home or property owner.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to combat this uncomfortable phenomena should it be found, no matter how small or large the issue may be!

ELVES FOR ELDERS HOLDS “CHRISTMAS IN JULY”

By Mark Berger People often think of giving during the holidays. There are appeals made on behalf of various charities and organizations asking for financial, in-kind or personal support. It can be demanding and hard to determine what causes to support and how much should be given to help at that point.

While helping out between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day can be fulfilling, what happens during the rest of the year?

People who are in need are still in that situation after the holidays. Where can they turn when everyone stops thinking about charities and helping others?

The answer is with Maxine Mae Hutchins of Right at Home in 78 ShopInRI

Warwick, where she has been the catalyst for Elves for Elders. Similar to the Toys for Tots initiative sponsored by the United States Marine Corps, Hutchins’ program helps seniors who might not receive gifts for the holidays.

This year, Hutchins wanted to change things up by hosting an event during the summer to help get people motivated.

“Anytime should be a time for giving, not just the holidays,” said Hutchins, who is now in her 16th year of operating this program. “There are people who may not have families or loved ones around, or they are unable to get out and get something for themselves. This is one of the main reasons why I started this.

They are so grateful and appre-

ciative for what they get from the generosity of others.”

Hutchins said that the roots of Elves for Elders began when she worked as a social worker in senior housing. She made Christmas cards for 200 residents that drew concerns from friends and colleagues saying it would be wasting her time. Hutchins said that when one of her residents thanked her for the card, stating it was the only one she received for Christmas, that gave her all the motivation necessary to keep going.

“That resident had never married and had no children. Then, I thought, if I’m the only one that gave her a card, and I certainly did not give her a gift, then how

sad is that; not receiving any gifts at Christmas?” she said.

The first year was out of Hutchins’ home with 300 gift requests. “In 2007, I started a non-profit association of women, who provide services to seniors called Seniors RULE (Resources Unlimited - Liaisons for Elders). They meet monthly to participate in community events and act as a one-stop resource for seniors and/or their caregivers. Part of being a member is supporting Elves for Elders,” she noted.

As the Elves for Elders program grew, Hutchins needed to move the holding site for the gifts. Three years ago, she found her current site at Lakewood Baptist Church in Warwick. She collected gifts from the malls after Thanksgiving weekend and held them at the church until the ‘wrapping’ event on December 13th, where the group sorted and assembled the gifts.

She added that the group did all of the wrapping until five years ago, when they asked that gift bags be included with the gift requests.

All of this begins on Wednesday, July 17, when the RULE sponsors its Christmas in July event. It takes place at Cucina Rustica, 555 Atwood Avenue, Cranston, from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. The $25 fee includes dinner, desert and coffee, along with a cash bar, raffles, door prizes, and a 50/50 raffle. Entertainment will be provided by Ishmael Muzik.

She said that there is a reason for the extra workload.

“The reason for the fundraiser is that when the trees come down on December 10th, we have about 250300 stars left with requests that don’t get filled,” she

said. “I have businesses that host a tree at work or at their business for a specific facility. Engaging businesses is a goal I have been trying to work on for the past couple of years, as the number of gift requests continue to grow. The past two years, we have averaged 1,200 gift requests from 22 various nursing homes, day cares, senior centers, and subsidized assisted living facilities.

Starting on November 1, there are trees that will display stars at various facilities throughout the region.

These stars include a gift for an elder that customers can pick up and purchase. All trees will be up at Emerald Square Mall in Attleboro, Wrentham Village Outlets, Catherine Specialty Clothing in Cranston, Mission Nutrition in Cranston, and Warwick Mall.

They will be removed on December 10.

“People are very generous if they are made aware of the program,” Hutchins continues. “I often get monetary donations as well. Last year I started using the Square. I can send someone an invoice and they can donate that way.”

Hutchins said that this year, there will be an opportunity to win a trip for two to South Africa. She said that this will be a separate event starting in October, with the winner to be drawn at the wrapping event.

Tickets are $100 and only 25 tickets are sold for this special drawing, so the odds are pretty good.

TOP 5 PET SAFETY TIPS FOR SUMMER 1. Keep Them Cool

Heat stroke is a major danger for pets when the weather turns hot and humid. Never leave your pet in a car since temperatures can rise quickly, even if the vehicle is parked in the shade with the windows slightly open. The chart on the AVMA website shows that in just 10 minutes the temperature can increase by 19 degrees, and in one hour, increase by 43 degrees. Even if the outside temperature is relatively mild—for example, 70 degrees—in 30 minutes, the inside vehicle temp can reach 104 degrees.

2. Protect from Poisons

The outdoors are full of natural and man-made hazards that can hurt your pet, starting with allergies. The ASPCA notes that pets can have allergic reactions not only to food but also to dust, plants pollens and insect bites, with reactions that can range from itching to life-threatening anaphylactic shock. If you think your pet has allergies, discuss it with your vet.

3. Secure the Screens

Pets love to look out the window to watch what’s happening outdoors. And if the window is open, they can also enjoy the breeze. But if the screen isn’t secure, the experience can be deadly if your pet falls out the window—what the ASPCA calls “High-Rise Syndrome.” If you aren’t sure if the screen can withstand a good push from your pet, make the room off-limits.

4. Beat the Burn

Work from the bottom up—specifically, your pet’s paws. Both asphalt and hot sand can burn your pet’s paw pads. As for the coat, long-haired pets can get a trim (for cats, just brush them more often than usual), but the ASPCA says to skip the shave for dogs, since the layers protect it from overheating and sunburn.

5. Watch the Water

Whether it’s the backyard kiddy pool or a boating excursion on the ocean, pets are at risk for drowning. The ASPCA says to gradually introduce your pets to water and if they will be on a boat, equip them with flotation devices. VetStreet has a list of pet water safety products. (Consider using these even if your pet is just on the beach or pool-side—better safe than sorry!)

Nobody wants to think about it. Nobody wants to talk about it. Pet aftercare allows pet owners to say goodbye in a loving and respectful way that commemorates their time together and honors the memories they’ve shared.

Five years ago, Doreen and Frank Vanacore unexpectedly lost their Cairn Terrier, Wally, in a hit a run accident right on their own street. Doreen was inconsolable. Through this, she knows first-hand what a person feels when they lose a pet. She admits, “I’m in charge of selling something I don’t want to talk about…I don’t handle loss well.”

But together, with her husband, she found a way to provide a way for people to remember and honor their pets.

Frank, a plasterer by trade, was working a job at a funeral parlor and he had noticed the headstones that they were showcasing there, and him and his partner thought “Ya know, we can make these.” He had been searching for a way to help console Doreen after her loss, and this was something he could do. So he and his partner went into the garage and created the first Animorial.

“We wanted to create a product that is affordable, because having lost pets before, you’re making emotional decisions.” explained Doreen. “We also wanted to make it personal. So the plaques are personalized with a photo of your pet etched in a hybrid acrylic, and placed on the Animorial.”

After a few prototypes and some trial and error, Doreen and Frank are happy with the product they can now provide for pet lovers.

Animorials are made from a molded poly-carbonate resin that resembles granite. They are weatherproof and tough, and in the event that you relocate, you can take it with you. They are perfect inside your home or outside in your yard or garden. Doreen admits, “I’m not good with loss. We were at The Washington Fair with our product and I spent most of the day crying. People want to tell you about their pets that they’ve lost. Everyone has a story…and I will listen. It leaves a hole in your heart.” She understands that not many people buy a product like this ahead of time. They don’t want to plan that. But she says “We are here when you need us.”

Hope & Healing Is All The Buzz

In the March 2019 issue of Shop In RI Magazine (available to read online at www.shopinri.com in our archive), we featured local business, K’s Kustoms, on pages 82-83. There was mention of a secret project they were working on. They finally completed it and revealed it to the family in which it was donated to. The family didn’t wish to have any more attention brought to them after the tragic events they have lived through recently, but you can be assured that the kids were grateful and were left with a smile on their faces after all the hard work that was put into this.

Joshua Mello, owner of K’s Kustoms, and his partner, Rachel Ware, have been busy bees over the past four months. Josh and Rachel set out to find a 20 year old Peg-Perego Volkswagon Bug, with the intention of modifying it and turning it into a one of a kind work of art to be presented to a child in need of some cheering up. Essentially, they were recreating Bumblebee, from the 2018 movie of the same name. The first in what they say will be many in their Hope & Healing Build line, this car is truly out of this world.

A ride on vehicle unlike any other, started out as Project Code Name: Gold Wheels, an obscure nickname for Bumblebee in the Transformers movies. A theme in the movie is of loss, where the character has lost their father. The project followed suit when it was decided that it would be given to a brother and sister, 5 and 9 years old, in Weymouth, MA whose father, a police officer, had lost his life in the line of duty last year.

If you’ve seen the movie, you know the character, Charlie, finds a yellow VW Bug in a junkyard and wants it for her 18th birthday. She soon discovers that this isn’t any regular vehicle. This is where her relationship with Bumblebee starts. Josh and Rachel follow the scenes from the movie throughout their project starting with the honeycomb found above the front driver’s side wheel. In a scene from the movie, the camera pans and you can see the reflection of the Golden Gate Bridge in the window. This was recreated with an illuminated laser engraved acrylic window. The passenger window displays the Weymouth Police badge with the officer’s badge number. The glove box opens and a thin blue

line is illuminated.

Every life moment deserves a soundtrack!

The Bumblebee build includes a radio with a custom cassette that Josh created using the 80’s themed songs from the movie and in between songs, radio static, mimicking Bumblebee trying to find his voice. The car starts with a key and this prompts actual VW bug sounds including engine and horn. All the lights are LED and an authentic 80s plate light illuminates a replica of the license plate that Bumblebee has. The car even has the one side mirror with black post, just like the original.

Rachel created all the sticker graphics, supplying honeycomb imagery throughout the vehicle and the necessary Transformers logos on the steering wheel center and under the hood. Upon exploring the engine area, there is an active fan belt with pulleys and a charging port for accessories. The trunk is quite the scene!

Josh bought a limited edition Bumblebee mask from Target and modified it to replicate the scene in the movie where

Charlie looks under the car and his eyes light up. That is under an acrylic plate that illuminates the engraved names of the project’s sponsors in the same way Bumblebee sees the world through his eyes in “Bee Vision. Blue and amber lights simulate these details amongst more honeycomb graphics.

As if this isn’t cool enough, Josh has switches and buttons throughout the vehicle that prompt sound effects and actual scenes from the movie from sound effects to spoken dialog. There are switches in the door handles, under the dash, in the trunk, all making each ride fun and unique. And they have good volume.

K’s Kustoms decided to finalize this project by working a long with Joe Fiduccia. Fiduccia is the owner and operator of Optimus Is Here, an exact replica tractor trailer truck. Bumblebee is one of the soldiers under Optimus Prime’s command.

For this delivery of the vehicle, Bumblebee will be delivered personally by Optimus Is Here.
