By Jenn Lombari Tea is a family tradition for Janine McMahon, owner of Rhode Island’s favorite tea room, Trinity Confections. “Growing up, tea was always a way of life in my family,” McMahon explains as she gestures over to the photos on the bureau in the tea room.

The Victorian style frames hold black and white photos of her grandparents and great grandparents.

After she had twins, her career in the fashion industry came to a halt because she couldn’t travel. She started baking at home.

Everything was from scratch. It always had been. Growing up, her family always grew their own food, and they canned it,

and froze it too. Summers were spent helping in the garden. Her entrepreneurial spirit had her baking and bringing samples to different cafes around Rhode Island. Business owners would order from her and she would bake and deliver it all herself, with her children in tow, and sometimes with the help of her father when her parents would come to visit. She would invest in pans and different tools of the trade, and gradually had enough that she could open a small business.

Her father asked, “Why don’t you open your own place?”- and that’s what she did.

In 2010, McMahon moved into the spot at 1625 Warwick Ave.

(Gateway Plaza). She started out with candies and cookies, two small tables, and a retail tea section. Gradually, she moved onto a more exquisite menu, and started to host large groups of people.

With the business finally where she wants it, the 42 seat room serves a full menu, and not just desserts. There are no walk ins, only reservations. Popular group settings are book clubs, garden clubs, bridal and baby showers, sorority groups, birthday parties, Mother’s Day, and even business meetings. Earlier parties can enjoy breakfast or brunch.

Everything here is made from scratch. McMahon mentioned that it’s important to her to in-

volve her three daughters in the business. She enjoys spending time with her daughters, Annabelle, Lily, and Alice. They help with some baking and other aspects of the business, while learning ethics, general life skills, and what to expect in a work environment.

The menu that McMahon and the girls have provided for guests is hearty and filling to say the least. Served in the elegant setting of the tea room are large portions of thick, hot, and hearty soups, just the way her father liked them; a very unique chicken salad recipe with a citrus undertone that has become a customer favorite; and the savory sweet French Toast options on the brunch menu are a few highlights. Trinity offers a lunch menu of handcrafted soups, salads, quiche, hearty sandwiches, and desserts.

High Tea includes soup, salads, quiche, traditional tea sandwiches, scones, tea breads, cake, cookies, chocolates, tea, and coffee.

Brunch is served for groups of 8 or more. The brunch menu will fill you up with baked triple berry French toast or baked cinnamon apple French toast, fresh fruit, quiche, hors d’oeuvres, scones, tea breads, cakes, cookies, chocolates, orange juice, teas, and coffee.

The selection of tea will please anyone’s taste buds. There are even gluten free and vegetarian options available.

Just Another Rib Recipe

There’s a million ways to make great pork ribs....and only a few ways to really ruin them. So, yeah, here’s another rib recipe.

But it’s really good.

I like using St. Louis style ribs.

They’re fattier than beef ribs, so I don’t have to worry as much about them drying out. I always remove the skin on the back of the ribs before rubbing them down with my spice rub.

8 to 10 lbs. pork ribs spice rub barbecue sauce

2 tablespoons brown sugar

SPICE 1 tablespoon granulated garlic RUB 1 tablespoon salt (I like using fine sea salt)

1 tablespoon black pepper 1 tablespoon celery seed (not celery salt) 1 tablespoon granulated onion

Combine all the spice rub ingredients. I like to grind the celery seed in a spice grinder before mixing with the others, so that I don’t get crunchy bits.

If the pork rib slabs are long, cut them in half so they’re easier to work with (and so they fit in the smoker!)

Rub the ribs with the spice rub, and place them in a 250-degree oven or smoker. Place a pan of water underneath to keep them moist and to catch any grease that drips down. I use an electric smoker, so during those 3 hours of cooking, I add hickory chips once an hour.

While the ribs are cooking, it’s time to make the barbecue sauce. I like a citrus-based, sweeter sauce, and this time, I had some mandarin oranges in the kitchen. But you can easily substitute regular oranges, lemons, limes or even grapefruit for this recipe.

Barbecue Sauce 1 cup ketchup 1/2 cup mandarin orange juice (or other citrus juice) zest of 2 mandarin oranges (or other citrus) 1/4 cup brown sugar 3 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon hot sauce (I like Frank’s Red Hot) 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon granulated garlic 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Remove the ribs from the smoker, place them individually on a piece of aluminum foil, and brush them with the barbecue sauce on all sides. Wrap them completely with the foil and place them on a baking sheet in a pre-heated 250-degree oven. Cook for 2 hours more.

Rhode Island’s Summer Hot Spot.

Opened 12 years ago, this quaint, charming, yet upscale restaurant has become one of Rhode Island’s favorite summer spots. What makes Tavern By The Sea so special? The warm atmosphere, amazing views and extensive, yet unique menu are a few things that come to my mind.

Before I give you my review of the menu, I want to start by sharing a little bit about the owner Kostas Karampetsos and his background because it’s not your typical Rhode Island restaurant story. Born and raised in Greece, Kostas always loved the hotel and restaurant industry. He studied, worked, and managed both hotels and restaurants in Europe, and here in the states. His studies here led him to earn a graduate degree from Johnson & Wales University. While working and managing different restaurants and experiencing as much as he could, Kostas continued to learn, but his ultimate goal was to own and operate his own successful restaurant one day, a goal he was driven to reach.

For his menu, Kostas wanted to have a variety of options, yet differentiate them from “typical” menu items, which he has done beautifully. Let’s start with the Lobster Bisque. It is one of my favorites, so when I learned that they won 3rd place at the Great Newport Chowder Cook-off, I had to try it. It was creamy and delicious and I was more than impressed! On to another favorite of mine-the homemade hummus. I love all types of hummus, but Kosta’s hummus platter was better than any I’ve ever had. I could make a meal of it; it’s that good. Another fabulous choice is the two different, yet both masterful creations of calamari options- Calamari Giovanni-tossed with banana peppers, roasted peppers, and scallions in a white garlic sauce, or one of his specialties- Oriental Calamari- tossed with Chinese pea pods, mushrooms, scallions, and diced tomato, in a hoisin plum sauce and finished with sesame seeds. This was absolutely mouth watering.

When Kostas first came to Wickford, he fell in love with its European feel and knew immediately that this is where he wanted his restaurant to be. He also knew he wanted an indoor/outdoor atmosphere and there wasn’t a better location than this. Along with its beautiful views, the outdoor seating offers a full bar and large televisions for entertainment. If you just want to relax, you can dine indoors while listening

cotta Cheese Ravioli, which is simmered in a brandy tomato cream sauce. I cannot say enough about this dish, as it is one of my favorite ravioli dishes.

If you are a sweet lover, indulge in one of their delicious desserts. I recommend the Lemon Berry Mascarpone Cake.

To die for! They also offer liquid desserts. Try the Tiramisu Tini or the Truffle Martini. If you aren’t quite in the mood for a sweet dessert, you can order one of the many cordials or whiskeys.

Whether you are on your way to or from one of Rhode Island’s beautiful beaches, or just looking for somewhere special to go for lunch or dinner, Tavern By The Sea has something special for everyone. By Julia Romano After playing professional football for nine years (seven of those years as a New England Patriot defensive end) isn’t it natural that one’s next venture would be as a national shrimp distributor? Well, maybe not for most, but for Jarvis Green it was! Now 39 years old, the 6’3’’ 285 lb. former LSU college graduate was drafted by the Patriots in 2002, and won two Super Bowls during his time in New England. From there he had short stints with the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans before retiring from pro football in 2010, and moving on to his next grand achievement.

ed him in the fourth round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Because of his Louisiana roots, he had friends in the shrimping business and after a chance meeting with one of those friends, a man named Diep Tran who approached him in 2011, his second successful career was off to a start. Tran’s first pitch to Green for his help with selling Louisiana shrimp in Boston was one that most wouldn’t refuse-he didn’t want to make money from Greenhe wanted to make money with him. The second reason for which Green agreed to help Tran was to

repay him for his help with a past personal issue.

At this point in the shrimp game, Green was a rookie and in need of training-not exactly like training on a football field-but how difficult could it be? For someone like Green who has alway put forth his best effort, this was not going to be any different. If he was going to do it, he was going to start from the bottom up. And that he did! Named Ocean’s 97 (a reference to the number on his Patriot’s jersey), this new business vi-

Through the new relationship with Dole & Bailey, Oceans 97 shrimp has since distributed to major financial institutions throughout New England, and other products are now available in multiple grocery retail locations around the country.

In only three short years, Oceans 97 has experienced rapid growth. Green launched Oceans 97 on Feb. 15, 2015, with a base of operations in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester and an office in Baton Rouge, and distributes shrimp through his curator, Dole & Bailey.

Next, he utilized Google’s search engine to educate himself about all of the different types of shrimp- brown shrimp, white shrimp, blue shrimp, pink shrimp, hoppers, shrimp from the mid-Atlantic, shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico, and why import shrimp is different than domestic shrimp. In Green’s own words, "It was Shrimp 101."

Through it all, Green also ate a lot of shrimp and learned about different ways to cook it, which led to the creation of his signature sauces. For Green, one thing was clear-the only type of products he would put his stamp on and sell were those of the highest quality. As proof of this, the sauces are all natural and made with only the freshest ingredients, with no powders, dyes, fillers, artificial flavors, or any other unhealthy additives.

Apparently, not everyone had faith in Green and his ability to reach success with Ocean’s 97. When Green first brought his idea up to his now ex-wife, she was not very supportive and actually laughed as she thought he was joking. Green certainly proved her wrong. As he was fresh off of a bad business decision in North Dakota, had dabbled in some real estate, and then left a not so satisfying construction job, the shrimp opportunity presented itself. For someone like Green, who with sheer determination has always worked his way to the top, there should be no question that he could, (or would) do it again.

This new, gourmet line consists of easy-to-cook meals of shrimp packaged in bags, with four flavors of sauce from which to choose- New Orleans Style BBQ , Cajun Curry, Chimichurri, and Garlic Butter. The shrimp is domestic and wild caught from the Gulf of Mexico by US Gulf Coast fishermen, and processed in Louisiana.

The product is then shipped in dry ice directly to the customer and arrives fresh and ready for cooking in a delicious and satisfying family meal, or to serve when entertaining.

As a result of being approached by Walmart in 2017, the Ocean’s 97 shrimp products will soon be available at all of their retail locations, nationwide. The products at the retail locations are packaged to serve two people. The shrimp is cleaned, seasoned, and ready to be added to pasta, rice, salad, or any other dish that is desired. Locally owned Munroe Dairy also offers the Ocean’s 97 shrimp for customers to purchase (under the Blue Bayou name) through its grocery delivery program.

Since its beginning, Oceans 97 has been a highlighted product in various cooking demonstrations at numerous locations, as well as at Boston Children's Hospital and North Shore Medical Center Union Hospital in Lynn, MA. By Jenn Lombari Tea is a family tradition for Janine McMahon, owner of Rhode Island’s favorite tea room, Trinity Confections. “Growing up, tea was always a way of life in my family,” McMahon explains as she gestures over to the photos on the bureau in the tea room.

After she had twins, her career in the fashion industry came to a halt because she couldn’t travel. She started baking at home.

Everything was from scratch. It always had been. Growing up, her family always grew their own food, and they canned it,

and froze it too. Summers were spent helping in the garden. Her entrepreneurial spirit had her baking and bringing samples to different cafes around Rhode Island. Business owners would order from her and she would bake and deliver it all herself, with her children in tow, and sometimes with the help of her father when her parents would come to visit. She would invest in pans and different tools of the trade, and gradually had enough that she could open a small business.

Her father asked, “Why don’t you open your own place?”- and that’s what she did.

In 2010, McMahon moved into the spot at 1625 Warwick Ave.

(Gateway Plaza). She started out with candies and cookies, two small tables, and a retail tea section. Gradually, she moved onto a more exquisite menu, and started to host large groups of people.

With the business finally where she wants it, the 42 seat room serves a full menu, and not just desserts. There are no walk ins, only reservations. Popular group settings are book clubs, garden clubs, bridal and baby showers, sorority groups, birthday parties, Mother’s Day, and even business meetings. Earlier parties can enjoy breakfast or brunch.

The menu that McMahon and the girls have provided for guests is hearty and filling to say the least. Served in the elegant setting of the tea room are large portions of thick, hot, and hearty soups, just the way her father liked them; a very unique chicken salad recipe with a citrus undertone that has become a customer favorite; and the savory sweet French Toast options on the brunch menu are a few highlights. Trinity offers a lunch menu of handcrafted soups, salads, quiche, hearty sandwiches, and desserts.

The bridal industry is a huge segment of the fashion world and is consistently growing, especially in the northeast.

STYLEWEEK Northeast Bridal is aiming to create an atmosphere where the community can be connected with wedding gown designers, wedding boutiques, vendors, and other bridal industry professionals. Brides will be able to find accessories and gifts for their bridesmaids, themselves, or the wedding; gain inspiration and gather ideas; and see all of the latest wedding gown trends.

Don’t worry gentleman; this event is not just for women! Grooms can also gather inspiration and shop vendors of male interest.

Anna: “It took a long time, but I worked full time and ran the business on the side until I was successful enough to quit my job and give everything to BlushTan. I always wanted to own my own business; growing up my father had his own business and I saw how rewarding it could be.”

- What ultimately led you to open a BlushTan in Providence? Anna: “I decided to open up in Providence because I seized an amazing opportunity with the location I am in. Additionally, Providence is a great little city that has a lot to offer, and because BlushTan has such an amazing product, I knew Providence would be a great fit.”

- What do you like most about being your own manager? Anna: “Being my own manager is the greatest because it allows me to help others. I can also bring my dog to work, that’s pretty great.”

- What have you learned about leadership and entrepreneurship? Anna: “It takes a lot of patience, time, sweat, and tears. Entrepreneurship requires you make sacrifices that you don’t really consider at first. But in the end, being able to work with people and make them feel great about themselves is super rewarding. Being a leader puts your character on

display and every day I learn something new as I grow as a person.”

- What do you think is the most significant barrier to female leadership? Anna: “Confidence. You never think you’re good enough or ready enough. You have to plan ahead, make smart choices, and then take a leap of faith. Women always second guess that they’re good enough to go for the job or whatever it is they want. That’s simply not true. We might not always have the answers to everything, but we can always ask. Asking for help is learning and learning means one day we can help someone who is in our position today. That is the only way more women are going to become leaders, helping each other.”

- What makes BlushTan different from other tanning salons? Anna: “At BlushTan we make our own organic product and we make sure it is the very best quality and fit for our clients. Growing internally will help us grow externally.”

- What advice can you give to future businesswomen?

Anna: “Believe in yourself, you have the ability to be successful. If you have doubts, reach out to your network. Networking is the most important part of being a business person, but especially for a business woman. Having contacts puts you in a position to be introduced to more people, and therefore, get your message out there. Also, don’t forget to pay it forward; if you can be a help to someone, do it. Not just because maybe you’ll need to call it in someday, but do it because it’s right. Doing what’s right is better than doing what’s convenient.”

Tips To Helping Moms Stay Happy & Healthy With Limited Time.

2017 World Miss Fitness America Pro Whether you’re a new mom or a mom who wants to get in shape, there’s no better time to start than now. I understand it can be a challenge juggling children, home, social activities, and work if you’re a working mom. As they say, where there’s a will there’s a way! Fitness doesn’t have to be time consuming; no need to spend several hours in the gym. A healthy diet and an effective workout plan will get you right where you want to be. Plus, it will may provide a boost for chasing the kiddos around.

I can’t say it enough- plan, plan, plan! Starving yourself is not only ineffective for losing weight and gaining muscle, it will also sap your energy. Eating 5-6 small meals a day will help you stay satisfied and to maintain your energy levels. Always be sure to include lots of veggies in all of your meals to fill you up and to give you fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Lean protein sources like chicken breast, turkey meat, and fish, will help keep you full and feed your muscles what they need. If you’re vegan or vegetarian, there are plenty of other protein sources for you to eat. Be careful when choosing fake meats because they can be high in sodium, so check the nutrition facts and ingredients before consuming. Fruits and nuts are good snacks that are high in nutritional value. Your best options for fruit are berries; they include lots of antioxidants and are lower in sugar.

Almonds, pistachios, cashews, and walnuts are comprised of healthy fats and also have protein. If you like trail mix, pay attention to portion sizes and ingredients- they may include chocolate, dried fruit, and added salt. When preparing your snacks for the day, portion them out and do not eat them straight out of the bag. Eating healthy and enjoying meals with your family can go hand in hand. You do not need to eat separate meals. There are plenty of family friendly healthy meals out there. Show your children that eating healthy is a lifestyle and not a temporary thing.

Designate one night a week for a dessert night, or maybe a meal that might not be so healthy, and enjoy it together.

Keep your portions small and don’t go overboard. Depriving yourself can lead to frustration and binging. As always, drink lots of water and keep caffeine to a minimum. If you are breastfeeding, drinking plenty of water is crucial. You also need to eat extra calories than you normally would while nursing, so you may want to use a calorie tracking app, like My Fitness Pal, to ensure you’re eating enough, but not too much.

Going to the gym may be a good way for you to get out of the house to make time for yourself. Following your own workout plan or taking classes are both great choices- whatever you prefer. Taking a class can be intimidating at first, but everyone started somewhere, so don’t compare yourself to others; go in there and go at your own pace, and ask the instructor for modifications as needed. A total body workout 3-4 times a week for 30-45 minutes is a great way to start. If 30 minutes is too much, shoot for at least 20 minutes and work your way up from there. Be sure to include strength training as well as cardio; a good warm up and stretching is just as important as the workout itself.

I’ll include a workout at the end of this article that you can do at home- no equipment needed. If you have a baby at home, try to get your workout in during nap time or set them up next to you. If your child is a little older. include them in the workout!

Set your goals, make sure they’re realistic, and specific. An example of a specific goal is. “I am going to work out for 30 minutes, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.” You can achieve your goals no matter where you’re at right now.

Mommy Time Workout Warm up: 25 jumping jacks 20 squats 10 arms circles forward 10 backwards 30 knee lifts (15 each side) 30 seconds jump rope Workout: 50 mountain climbers (25 each side) 15 push-ups 50 side leg lifts (25 each side) 20 tricep dips (these can be done on the floor or on a chair/ table) 30 forward lunges (15 each side) 30 seconds plank hold 30 bicycle crunches 30 squats Repeat as many rounds as possible! Be sure to stretch afterwards.

PACIFIC RIM UPRISING

In 2013, Pacific Rim entertained many as a movie about a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures, and a former pilot and trainee who paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon ( Jaeger) in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse. Now we are greeted with the sequel to this amazing movie, Pacific Rim Uprising.

The movie starts with a voice-over from Jake Pentecost ( John Boyega), Stacker Pentecost’s son. He explains how the world is struggling to survive and rebuild after the Battle of the Breach resulted in the closing of the breach. The Pan Pacific Defense Corps is still in operation as the Jaegers prowl the land stopping people who destroyed Jaeger landfills to collect the remains to allow them to build their own Jaegers.

The story goes on with Jake sneaking into the Jaeger deconstruction facility along with three other people. However, when they get to the Jaeger, they turn their guns on Jake, telling him that if he doesn’t find what they’re looking for, they’ll kill them.

Jake realizes that what they were looking for had been stolen just moments before and a fight ensues as Jake traps the men in the Jaeger and pursues the person with the machinery. He follows them to their warehouse where he realizes that they are building their own Jaeger that they named Scrapper. When he confronts the person, she turns out to be a girl named Amara (Cailee Spaeny) who needed the piece to finish her Jaeger. They turn the Jaeger on and escape, but are eventually caught by the PPCD. He and Amara are sent to jail and Jake speaks to his adopted sister Mako (Rinko Kikuchi) who is the general secretary of the PPCD and who tells him that the only way he will get out of prison is if he re-joins the PPCD program.

Regrettingly, he does and Amara is brought along as well.

When they arrive, Jake is sent to go see his old ranger friend Nate (Scott Eastwood), and Amaura is sent to meet the other cadets.

At first, she has trouble fitting in, but eventually become friends with them. Meanwhile, Jake and his copilot Nate are visited by the head of the Shao Corporations Company, accompanied by Newt (Charlie Day). It is revealed that Newton and Hermann have since separated and are now working for different companies. Newt’s company wants to build automated drones for Jaegers so that no more people will have to die, and Herman wants to put rocket boosters on the backs of Jaegers so they can effectively get to battle quicker. Both sides disagree and as the drone policy is eventually implemented into the Jaeger system, a meeting for it is held in Australia. Gipsy Avenger is sent to oversee the meeting and to make sure that nothing happens. However, a rogue Jaeger emerges from the water and Gipsy Avenger is forced to fight, while Mako Mori dies at the hands of the rogue Jaeger. Jake is heartbroken over the loss of his adopted sister, and he and his partner Gipsy Avenger head out to fight the Jaeger in Siberia. Once they destroy it, they realize that there was never a human piloting it in the first place. When they return back to base, everything starts to fall apart as Amara and her friends look

through the destroyed Jaeger and realize that the tech isn’t human.

Next, everything breaks loose and the real battle begins.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. I thought it was a great addition to the Pacific Rim series. I like the characters they added, especially Jake and Amaura, and the return of old characters like Mako, Newt, and Hermann. Many of the characters were well-rounded, except the only problem I had with the character development was the fact that they changed Charlie Day’s character Newt so much, and he was led in a direction I never anticipated.

(He goes in that direction as a result of the events that occurred in the first movie.) Other characters I had a slight issue with was Jake’s copilot Nate and his long time crush Jules (Adria Arjona).

We never received much on their back story together, and all that we know is that they had been pilots and then Jake left the academy. It is very clear that they do not like each other, and that’s how it is portrayed in the movie.

I also liked the direction that the second movie took from the original as most of the plot was based off of what had happened with the breach being closed and the world recovering from the Kaiju attacks. They included many important plot points from the original movie, as well, and there were many similar important factors leading to the climax. The length of the movie was also well-suited, as it wasn’t too short, which enabled it to capture everything, and it wasn’t too long so that everything was not jam-packed into it. There were definitely a lot of important plot pieces that in the end had me saying, “Oh my gosh,” and it makes me wonder if that’s what they were planning the entire time. The first movie was all about introducing the Kaiju War and what they were going to do to close the breach. But now that the breach is closed, we are left to figure out what new types of threats there are as the character Amara says that “they will be back.” There is also a major plot twist that I didn’t see coming, as I suspected that it was one group in the beginning that was causing all of the trouble, and it turned out to be someone completely unexpected..

The ending was extremely emotional for me as it strongly reminded me of a scene from the first movie and I was in my seat crying, not knowing what would happen and anticipating the worst. However, I was wrong, and in classic hero movie form, good prevailed in the end. And of course, no one can go wrong with a mid credits end scene hinting at yet another Pacific Rim Uprising (Uprising). I give Pacific Rim Uprising a 5.8 out of 6 diamonds.

By Julia Romano Delight in the Sight of the Cherry Blossom Trees As You Explore Washington, D.C. There are endless things to experience in Washington D.C. to create a lifetime of memories for you and your entire family.

The city has 11 Smithsonian Museums, including the National Air and Space Museum, Museum of National History, National Museum of American History, and so many more. And the best part is that for all of them, admission is FREE! Not only that, the exhibitions inside are world class. Even for those who really aren’t big on history, there’s plenty going on for all to appreciate.

For the foodies on your D.C. trip, there are burger joints to food trucks to pizza to fine dining, and everything in between, to suit any palate (and pocket!)

The city of D.C. itself isn’t huge and the Metro system is its excellent, which means no neighborhood is out of reach and you won’t be frustrated by sitting on a train for an eternity to get to where you want to be. Getting to and from the airport to the city is also a “breeze”, whether you’re flying into Dulles, Reagan, or Baltimore.

Georgetown alone is reason enough to visit D.C.! The quaint university town is like a breath of fresh air outside of the hustle and bustle of the city, with views of the Potomac River and more shops to stroll in and out of than you can count. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can also rent kayaks/boats from the Key Bridge Boathouse and paddle along the river.

If there was ever a city for a sightseeing tour, D.C. is definitely it. A two day trolley tour pass allows you to hop on and off at all of the attractions you want to visit, including Capitol Hill, The White House, The Lincoln Memorial, the National Archives, as well as all of the museums. And if you’re one of those who is not much into history, there’s the ‘D.C. and Movie Sites Tour’ where you’ll visit sites from Forrest Gump, Bones, The West Wing, Wedding Crashers with even a bit of House of Cards thrown in for good measure!

Cherry Blossom Trees

For those who plan a D.C. trip during the spring time, they may be lucky enough to witness one of the city’s annual highlights-the extraordinary blooming of the cherry blossom trees.

History of Washington, D.C.’s Cherry Blossoms Back in the year 1912, the mayor of Tokyo, Japan, Yukio Ozaki, gave the city of Washington, D.C. 3,020 Yoshino cherry blossom trees as a token of peace and friendship. Who would have imagined that over one hundred years later, the tradition of celebrating Japan’s gift would continue to be in full bloom, and an annual festival surrounding the cherry blossom trees would brink folks from all over the country to marvel at their beauty? Although many of the original trees that were shipped to the US from Japan were diseased, bug-filled, and had to be burned, a few, including the first two trees that were saved, planted and are still standing. These two were originally planted by First Lady Helen Taft and Viscountess Iwa Chinda, wife of the Japanese Ambassador, and can still be seen along the water where 17th St. SW ends. Most of the original trees were planted around the Tidal Basin, a small man-made reservoir adjacent to the National Mall.

Since that time, the number of trees has increased to 3,750, with 16 varieties, but the two that dominate are the Yoshino and Kwazan. The pink blossoms of the Kwanzan trees are often found in the East Potomac Park area, while the white blossoms of the Yoshino are found closer to the northern part of the Tidal Basin near the Washington Monument.

According to the National Park Service, over 1.5 million people visit the cherry blossom trees annually.

The cherry blossoms are typically in bloom for about two weeks, but that can change if the weather is such that is not favorable for the blossoms. The weather is also the primary factor for determining the the time period for which full bloom occurs. The peak bloom date is defined by the park service as the day when 70% of the blossoms are open on the cherry trees surrounding the Tidal Basin.

The earliest bloom ever recorded was on March 15, 1990, and the latest bloom ever recorded occurred on April 18, 1958.

Pink Tie Party stylishly marks the end of winter and the official beginning of blossom season. Attendees are delighted by delicious food highlighting D.C.’s culinary scene, an open bar, unique entertainment, over-the-topdecor, and friendly competition of the silent auction.

Opening Ceremony The opening ceremony is the kick-off of the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival, and attendees have the opportunity to watch world-renowned performers as springtime is welcomed to Washington, D.C. Visitors from near and far enjoy spirited traditional and contemporary performances in the historic Warner Theatre.

The Festival publicizes a natural treasure that unites the city, region, nation, and the world. The trees – both in Japan and the US – have always symbolized birth and renewal.

Blossom Kite Festival This year marked the seventh annual Blossom Kite Festival and showcased the creativity of kite makers and skill of fliers from across the US and other countries through a variety of competitions and demonstrations, Rokkaku Battles, and the Hot Tricks Showdown. For this annual event, visitors bring their own kites or children can make a kite at an activity station (while supplies last) to fly on the Public Field. Kites are also available for purchase onsite.

Petalpalooza The inaugural Petalpalooza is presented by FreshDirect and makes its highly anticipated debut at The Wharf, D.C.’s newest half-mile-long waterfront destination. Formerly known as the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival, Petalpalooza includes interactive art installations, larger-than-life games and activities, live music on three outdoor stages, a roller rink, a beer garden, a spectacular fireworks show by Pyrotecnico, and much more, along the piers of the Southwest Waterfront, the “home of the cherry blossoms.”

Powerwashing is essentially utilizing a machine to wash whatever you are attempting to wash (the outside of a building, walkways, etc.) that allows one to use varying degrees of pressure to help in accomplishing the task.

Washing surfaces on the outside of one’s property is obviously a necessary maintenance requirement needed to keep things looking nice and, possibly, even safe!

Powerwashing can be a methodology that saves a tremendous amount of time while doing an extremely thorough job. As one example, concrete walkways filled with green mold are DANGEROUSLY slippery when wet. Powerwashing can be a great tool to help adeptly clean the mold away.

If you are painting the exterior of your home or business, the surfaces should ALWAYS be washed prior to applying any type of coating – one is seemingly asking for a disaster if they are not cleaned beforehand. Why not use a powerwasher to efficiently clean the surfaces?

Powerwashers really are AWESOME tools. They can also be VERY DANGEROUS tools if not used correctly.

If you are attentive enough to truly use a powerwasher the way it was meant to be used, absolutely go for it!! If not, or if you would rather not take the chance, definitely reach out to an experienced professional for advice, or perhaps for helping with the mission of washing (whatever it is you are aiming to wash) in its entirety.

There are all types of powerwashing machines available on the market.

There are hot water & cold water machines; machines that could literally fit in the trunk of a car; and other machines that need to be towed on a trailer. There are super high pressure machines, super low pressure machines, and everywhere in between. There are models available to rent at almost any rental or big box store and there are other models available only through commercial suppliers.

By Jenn Lombari Just off the highway and minutes from Providence and Massachusetts, is a treasure of a city just waiting for you to arrive. Pawtucket, RI is not just the home of The Pawtucket Red Sox and McCoy Stadium. From Winter Farmers Markets, several breweries, live music venues and several festivals throughout the year, this city has a lot to offer. There are also new and exciting businesses popping up all around Pawtucket and I’d like to mention a few that you should check out right away!

Let’s start on the Providence city line. In a renovated mill building at 545 Pawtucket Avenue, you will find amongst art studios, yoga studios, and office suites, a specialty gift store called Jordan’s Jungle. Open seven days a week, Jordan’s Jungle specializes in over 150 varieties of air plants, as well as tropical house plants, succulents, cactus, and Bromeliads. When people think of “United Parcel Service,” or its abbreviation, UPS, they may envision large brown trucks delivering packages worldwide. They might also believe their primary focus centers on shipping.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The brand has numerous services and programs to help individuals and business customers reach their goals, while continuing its mission of providing excellent customer services and exceeding expectations.

Located at Smithfield Commons on 400 Putnam Pike, Ste. J, store manager Anthony Cascio is a man-of-manytrades. One day, he and his four-person staff could be mailing items halfway around the world. On another day, he is designing brochures, pamphlets and other promotional materials. Later that same week, he could be printing legal documents and business cards for new and emerging businesses. No matter the scope of any project, Cascio said the goal is providing quality over quantity on every project.

“I am a self-taught graphic designer who has learned the value of letting pictures tell the story,” said Cascio, who has been with the company for more than one decade.

“We are truly a one-stop facility for small businesses because they are often too busy to worry about those particular jobs,” said Cascio. “Executives don’t have time to leave their offices to send out an important correspondence or get something to another destination that day.

On this day, events held throughout the United States help promote awareness of the wide variety of benefits that trails provide, encourage people to discover their local trails, raise awareness of trail issues, and instill excitement for the outdoors.

National Trails Day is also an opportunity to thank the many volunteers, land agencies, trail developers, park employees, and rangers for their help in developing and maintaining the trails.

This day is sponsored by the American Hiking Society, an organization that promotes and protects foot trails, their surrounding natural areas, and the hiking experience.

Times have certainly changed the reasons for which people find adventure in hiking. In earlier times, walking generally indicated poverty and was also associated with vagrancy. The idea of walking in the countryside for pleasure first came about in the 18th-century, and arose because of changing attitudes to the landscape and nature, associated with the Romantic movement.

Hiking is a great way to experience nature, while exploring and learning about what exists within vast wooded areas. Some hike for the sport of it.

These types of hikers are adventurous and seek out places that can be a great workout and where the experience is a challenge. Others feel that hiking provides inner peace and for

many, it is a way to get away from their hectic lives and all the stress endured on a daily basis. For those that choose to go solo, hiking is a great way to spend some time alone to clear one’s mind, while appreciating the joy of nature.

The official event for National Trails Day in Rhode Island, hosted by the JAYCEES of RI, will be held at Riverpoint Community Park, 110 Hay Street, West Warwick, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm with a 1.3 mile hiking experience through a picturesque trail system that is nestled along the longest waterway of the state and its all-important confluence of the north and south branches, the Pawtuxet River and its watershed.

Francis C. Carter Memorial Preserve

Narragansett Trail, Charlestown With more than 6 miles of hiking trails, there are opportunities to explore nature on terrain, from rocky uplands to wide, flat farm paths, while observing unique plants and animals. Comprised of 841 acres, This South County gem is one of the Nature Conservancy’s best loved preserves in Rhode Island.

Lincoln Woods Lincoln

Lincoln Woods Trail is a 3.4 mile lightly trafficked loop trail that features a lake and is good for all hiking skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. The beautiful scenery surrounds all types of wildlife and birds. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge

Greenville (Audubon Society Refuge) Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge is one of many of the Audubon Society Refuges that exist throughout RI and in Seekonk, MA. The following are available at all of the refuge locations.

The Audubon Society maintains nearly 9,500 acres of natural habitat and most of the refuges are open to the public and have groomed trails for hiking and nature study.

Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge Exeter (Audubon Society Refuge)

Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge is another of the Audubon Society’s Refuges. Located in Exeter, it contains 1013 acres of fields, diverse forest habitats, a pond, streams (including a beautiful waterfall), and a historic cemetery, within a serene setting for hiking its five trails, ranging from .3 miles to 1.25 miles.

George B. Parker Woodland Trail Coventry (Audubon Society Refuge)

George B. Parker Woodland Trail is a 6.1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Greene, RI that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.

Rhode Island that features a river and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and walking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Wolf Hill Forest Preserve Smithfield

Wolf Hill Forest Preserve Trail is a 4.4 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located in Smithfield, RI that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Pachaug Trail Exeter

Pachaug Trail is a trail of 8.5 miles and is an intermediate hike with some areas of rocks/climbing located near Exeter, RI that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and trail running, and is best used from April until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Walkabout Trail Loop

George Washington State Park Trail, Chepachet Walkabout Trail Loop is a 4.3 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Chepachet, Rhode Island that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from August until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Sakonnet Greenway Trail Portsmouth, Middletown

Ten Mile River Greenway

The Aquidneck Land Trust has been working with landowners over many years to create trail easements through the Sakonnet Greenway in Portsmouth and Middletown. The final section of the Sakonnet Greenway Trail was completed in October, 2012, making it the longest nature trail on Aquidneck Island. The Sakonnet Greenway Trail passes through recreational areas, active farmland, wetlands, and forest for a total of 10 miles, with an intermediate rating.

The Ten Mile River Greenway is a 6.1 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Rumford,
