Caesars Changes Policy on 'Do Not Disturb' Rooms

One of the world's largest casino companies will check its guests' hotel rooms every 24 hours, even if they have a "Do Not Disturb" sign hanging on the doorknob. Caesars said it also is considering giving panic buttons to its employees to enable them to quickly summon help if they are in danger or feel threatened.

The company will implement the new policy soon at all its properties worldwide, spokeswoman Noel Stevenson said. The company, which owns 47 casinos in five countries, becomes the latest hospitality firm to adopt new room-check policies after a gunman in his Las Vegas hotel room rained bullets down on an outdoor concert in October, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds before killing himself.

"In light of recent tragic events and to further strengthen security, we intend to check rooms with 'Do Not Disturb' signs on the door every 24 hours," Stevenson said. The room checks will be conducted by security guards. The company had proposed having housekeepers do the checks, but changed its mind after opposition from a casino workers' union. Caesars joins other gambling and hospitality companies who have adopted similar policies requiring guest rooms to be checked periodically, even if a "Do Not Disturb" sign is in use, including Disney, Hilton, Wynn Resorts, and Boyd Gaming. The frequency of checks ranges from 12 hours to two days.

With their newest location at 721 Quaker Lane in East Greenwich, Condesa expanded their inspired take on traditional fare to RI residents farther south. Both Condesa locations – the name refers to a hip section of the Cuauhtémoc Borough in Mexico City – feature culinary delights that draw from various areas below the US southern border, from the Yucatan Peninsula to northern Mexico, landlocked central regions, and coastal states.

“We offer only quality ingredients, quality products,” coowner Ernesto Leon said. “We pride ourselves on our menu. We offer authentic Mexican food; it’s not Americanized. We also offer many traditional Mexican drinks as well as margaritas.”

With familial connections to the restaurant world, Ernesto and his brother/partner Roberto, have been involved in the food business in various capacities since they were around 12 years old. Bouncing around from California to the southern US, and then to the Midwest, they took a roundabout path to RI, and found the Ocean State to be most welcoming.

They opened their first restaurant in Smithfield in February of 2016, and their newest EG location opened this January.

“We’ve built up a base of clientele,” Ernesto said. “We see our regulars, customers who are here for the first time, and customers who didn’t know we were here. We get good, positive feedback.”

“We try to break that mentality of the idea that Mexican food is unhealthy,” Ernesto explained. “People are pleasantly surprised when they try our food and realize that all of our entrees are flavorful, fresh, and healthy.”

Their scratch kitchens offer vegetarian choices and many gluten-free options. The multi-part menu has authentic twists on familiar items, such as tamales, sopes, tacos, burritos, and enchiladas. Rice, beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, jalapeño, habaneros, and sweet potato, pair with unique and flavor infused ingredients, including cactus, tamarind-infused tequila, or Chihuahua cheese. Appetizer options include, ceviche (a citrusy seafood dish) or pepinos (sliced cucumber and littleknown tuber jicama in lime and mild chili seasoning). The lunch menu has 11 choices all under eight dollars: with options, such as huevos rancheros (eggs in a chipotle sauce, guacamole, and queso) or flautas (shredded chicken in a crispy rolled tortilla).

The comprehensive list of house specials packs dishes, such as cochinita pibil (Yucatan-inspired slow-roasted pork seasoned with annatto seeds from the achiote tree); carne asada (a steak dish originating in northern Mexico); mole pipian, (chicken in a pumpkin seed mole); chiles en nogada (poblano peppers stuffed with ground beef, raisins, apple, pear, plantain, covered in a walnut sauce, topped with pomegranate and cilantro); and birria, a spicy stew originating in Jalisco.

While many associate salt-rimmed margaritas as a standard Mexican drink, the origin of the tequila-based cocktail is cloudy.

Condesa also features some less familiar, but time-honored and culturally beloved beverages, including palomas (grapefruit soda, tequila, and lime wedge garnish) and cantaritos, which are similar but have orange juice as well as grapefruit and fresh citrus fruits, served in traditional clay pots called cantaritos.

“Most of the customers that we see at the East Greenwich location are locals from that area,” Ernesto said, noting that the new location is close to West Warwick and Warwick as well. “We have faith in that market. There isn’t much Mexican food offered in that area, and we felt that our concepts fit. We’ve been very well received.”

Along with treating taste buds to new sensations, visitors may also get a taste of unfamiliar culture and history.

“A lot of people think Cinco De Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day,” Ernesto explained. “It’s not; it represents a battle between the Mexican Army and the French Army in the city of Puebla.”

“It’s one of those prideful underdog stories,” Ernesto continued.

“A very outnumbered Mexican Army with limited resources defeated the French. Mexico won the battle, even though they lost the war. In Mexico, the only region that recognizes Cinco De Mayo is the state of Puebla. Here in the United States, it has become huge, synonymous with the Mexican heritage, kind of like how the US celebrates St. Patrick’s Day to honor the Irish heritage. People, in general, like to celebrate cultures, and the US is very multicultural.”

Every Cinco de Mayo, Condesa celebrates with a Puebla party, offering giveaways, and raffles for prize packages, featuring tequila and other gifts.

LASAGNA FLAT BREAD RECIPE Ingredients: 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese 1 (8 ounce) package shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 1 (3 ounce) package Parmesan cheese 1 egg 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning 1 pound sausage 1/2 (26 ounce) jar marinara sauce 6 flatbreads Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Combine ricotta cheese, 1/2 of the mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, and Italian seasoning in a bowl.

Cook sausage in a skillet over medium heat until no longer pink, 5 to 10 minutes; drain. Stir in marinara sauce.

Spread 1/6 of the cheese mixture evenly on each flatbread; cover with sausage mixture.

Top with remaining mozzarella cheese.

Bake in the preheated oven until cheese is melted

1 medium fennel bulb, finely chopped 1 smashed garlic clove 3 cans (15 1/2 oz.) cannellini beans, drained and rinsed, 1 1/2 cups reserved 40 oz. veal bone broth (or chicken broth, if you prefer)

Drain and rinse the cannellini beans, reserving 1 1/2 cups for later. Pour the beans in the saucepan.

Add the veal (or chicken) broth, the bouquet garni, and the salt and pepper.

Simmer for 15 minutes, then turn the heat off and let it cool for 15 minutes.

1/4 teaspoon bouquet garni

Puree the soup in batches in a blender, until smooth.

1 teaspoon salt

Return the soup to the pot and add the reserved beans. Heat for 10 minutes, and then taste it, adding more salt and pepper, if needed.

To serve, place a mound of the pork, cubed or pulled, in the center of a bowl. Pour the soup on top, and drizzle with a touch of extra virgin olive oil.

Chopped scallions, or fresh chives, or parsley on top never hurt!

Celebrating four years in February of 2018, The Taco Shop has been thriving in the unlikely small town of Harrisville, RI; unlikely because up until Angela Vietro opened her restaurant, the common eateries in the area had always served pizza and grinders. It was indeed a brave move.

“We’re pretty limited out here for food choices. Out of my desperation for fresh food, I decided I’d supply it.” said Vietro. “I love this town! I grew up here.” She went on to explain, “Tacos were different and a nice fresh option.”

The idea was well-received and she started to build her customer base.

One of her goals for the 49 seat space at 459 Chapel Street was to keep herself and a few other people employed. Since opening, she has 18 ShopInRI

exceeded that goal and doubled the amount of employees.

and of course, keep the customers happy.

The restaurant business was no new territory for Vietro. She grew up working with her father, Al Mottola, owner of the Western Hotel for the past 30 years. She started bussing tables at a very young age and eventually worked the front of the house. Over time, she would work in the kitchen, she bar tended, and just learned to do whatever needed to be done to keep up with the daily routine.

So what’s on the menu?

“I learned a lot from my dad,” she says with a smile.

Vietro knew that this was what she wanted to do with her life.

Now owning her own business, she has learned to roll with the punches, keep her staff happy,

Where to start? There is a build your own taco(s), burrito and salad section. You can choose from ground beef, marinated steak, shredded chicken, mahi mahi, pork belly, and vegetarian. All fresh ingredients are used to make guacamole and different salsas from scratch, and the coconut rice adds a light and complimentary flavor to any item on the menu.

There are always special tacos, burritos and quesadillas, and crunch-wraps on the menu too. A local favorite is the pork belly tacos. Vietro brags about how good they are, with crispy pork belly, diced tomato, lettuce, pickled red

onions, and avocado and chipotle mayo cream. Or maybe you’re in the mood for a Garden Quesadilla?

Cheddar cheese, black beans, grilled onions, grilled peppers and scallions, served with guac and your choice of salsa. When ordering salsa, keep in mind that not all salsas are hot. The taco shop does its best to supply something for every taste and dietary need.

And anytime is a good time for breakfast! You can add egg to any taco, burrito or salad for just $1!

Be sure to follow The Taco Shop on Facebook. Six days a week, just before lunch time, they update their Facebook page with the daily specials. One of the specials that has become a staff favorite is the Black and Goat vegetarian burrito. This burrito is loaded with guacamole, coconut rice, black beans, cabbage, house made (very spicy) salsa verde, goat cheese, pickled red onion, and sour cream. Who Is The Best of the Best In RI?

By Julia Romano It’s an amazing fact that Little Rhody boasts more fabulous eateries per capita than most all of the states in the country. Ranking number 4 nationally definitely puts our small state at the beginning of the food chain. Ranging from casual places to fine dining and everything in between, RI residents have an extraordinary appetite for good food. And RI restaurants that take advantage of the many locally sourced ingredients enables them to serve superior quality food.

Since March 2011, Jim Nellis, founder of Rhode Island Food Fights, has hosted festivities that cater to all different types of food lovers-and to date, the number of food participants has grown beyond what anyone could imagine. The first event ever was for the best cupcakes and was held at The Spot Underground. After publicizing the the cupcake competition on social media, over 375 people showed up and the event was a huge success. As a result, Nellis decided to expand the event to include ice cream and cookies. From there, Nellis’ idea and the popularity of RI Food Fights has grown to include many other food types and hundreds of participating restaurants.

The addition of hot food led to Nellis creating another type of competition-passports, available for $20 each and typically include 15 to 20 coupons that can be exchanged at participating restaurants for one free item in the featured category (an additional purchase is not required). SPRING INTO MOVEMENT By: Stacie Venagro

2017 World Miss Fitness America Pro April is my favorite month of the year! Spring is officially here and that means longer days and warmer days! So that means it’s time to get out and do something. April is your call to “spring” into movement. I know the winter months are tough, and working out indoors isn’t as fun as getting outside for some fresh air. There are so many things you can do outside. Maybe you like to just take a walk, jog, maybe a run. If keeping it simple is your thing then go for it. If you like to try something different, look for some hills either in your area or maybe your local park. Hill sprints will get your heart racing and your muscles burning! You can also sprint on flat surfaces as well, however I do suggest a track for this to make sure you don’t trip over anything. Plus you can usually measure your distance. Start out by sprinting for 100 meters or sprint up one hill, but do not stop moving after that. To ensure your heart rate comes down safely continue to walk until you catch your breath. As always bring and drink lots of water.

Create a total body circuit workout and take it outdoors. If you want to venture out of your own backyard light weight equipment like resistance bands and a jump rope are easy to transport and great to use. Pick a nice level spot on the ground and get to working out.

The perfect exercise is the exercise that you enjoy and makes you happy. Something as simple as playing kickball with the kids, maybe a game of tag can get you moving and the calories burned!

Take advantage of the beautiful weather. Maybe it’s still difficult for you to get motivated, just get yourself outside and start off slow. Maybe you begin with a simple walk around the block and then increase your distance and/or pace a little each day or each week.

There’s no wrong way to do it, just start. I promise you’ll feel better when you do.

Owner, Ameth Alzate, wanted to bring industry back to Central Falls. Growing up there, he wants Central Falls to be the “Comeback City”. By building his business there, he is providing work and education for people and has put something fresh and modern into the city’s landscape. Here, he hopes to create opportunity and innovation.

This is also the first non-academic entity to team up with a major university, in this case, Roger Williams College. Students will be offered competency based certification on hydroponics as well as credit based certification college credits. Choosing Hydroponics as an elective is almost a vocational approach to education. Within Hydroponics, students can learn everything from S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, math), manufacturing, water management, sustainability, nutrition, biology, plumbing, electrical… The program will be made available at universities as well as in an online platform.

By Jenn Lombari How does your garden grow? At Hydro P.U.N.C. Cafe, the garden that provides the greens you are eating is growing right in front of you… HYDROPONICALY. P.U.N.C. stands for People Using No Chemicals. But there is more to their mission than that.

Hydro P.U.N.C. café is a consequence of the work of the sustainable energy company, IBA Global. The company is made up of a group of scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, developers, and investors, dedicated to the preservation and continuance of our planet. Main areas of focus within IBA Global are WATER, FOOD, and ENERGY…in that order; Waste conversion to energy, coal conversion to clean energy, and hydroponics.

Although Hydro P.U.N.C. Café was built several years ago, attached to the hydroponics area, it only opened recently. The café highlights what can be done with hydroponics and the efficiency of hydroponics to provide food for the masses. It’s an alternative to conventional farming. Conventional farming creates a huge burden on the environment; from the soil, to water consumption, and the amount of carbon emissions let out into the air. With this model that was built by the IBA Global team, all of the harm done to the environment through conventional farming can be reduced by 95%.

The company is educating people on how to grow food that is safe, healthy, and environmentally conscious. The location at 712 Broad Street in Central Falls, RI is the 28 ShopInRI

Project Sprout is also a big part of the education program. Using their trademarked, Green Machine, they are teaching students all of what is mentioned above. The Green Machine is tool that supports the program and can be seen in action at Hydro P.U.N.C. Café. Project Sprout is in 69 schools across 7 states as of right now.

So let’s get to the food!

Alzate is in no way new to the restaurant business. Having run and owned several establishments over the last several years, he took his knowledge from the field, combined with wanting to provide the area with fresh, healthy food, and he built a menu that cannot be compared to anything else in Central Falls.

Offering up affordable, hot breakfast meals, the menu is full of

delicious options like omelets, breakfast sandwiches, and wraps. There is even an extensive part of the menu featuring pancakes and French toast, both plain or with fruit toppings. A selection of bagels is also available with an array of toppings like fresh fruit, cream cheese, almond butter, peanut butter, and more. Maybe you’re in a hurry and want to grab a smoothie or a coffee and some baked goods? They’ve got you covered!

Alzate claimed. They come with freshly harvested lettuce, rice, red beans, cheese, house made guacamole and salsa and you can choose vegetarian, chicken, or beef.

The upstairs café is for walk in and sit down customers. There is a whole other kitchen downstairs equip to handle online specialty orders. In mid-April, the website will be launched. The website is built to be very interactive. It’s not just a “build-your-own” type site.

Depending on your health goals, if you’re trying to lose weight, gain muscle, stay fit, the sight links you to a trainer and a nutritionist to help you make the right meal choices. There are a few questions you answer and the website will break down what to eat on what day and what exercise to do to reach your personal goals.

They have also developed an app called Food Resource.

A brief explanation of what this app does, is as follows: Let’s say there is enough food left over at the end of the day to make twelve fresh burritos. Instead of those burritos costing full price, they could end up costing only $3 each. How? The food goes to the highest bidder. You might be having a small get together and this is the perfect opportunity to put that app to use.

There is also an option for non-profit organizations to fill out an application to be eligible for fresh food at the end of the day.

So as you can see, Hydro P.U.N.C. Café is a modern and innovative business that is a ray of light in the Central Falls community. Fresh food, jobs, and education all under one roof. Go check it out for yourself !

Who Needs Sunscreen? Everybody!

Spring is in full swing, which means the sun's rays will continue to get stronger as we head into summer. Here's a surprising skin fact: Even though putting on sunscreen daily is pretty easy, most people don't bother. A whopping 69.1 percent of women and 85.7 percent of men don't wear sunscreen when they'll be outdoors for more than an hour, according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatologists.

Those numbers are troubling. Cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, have been rising for the past 30 years. It's estimated that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. And it can happen to anyone.

With summer around the comer, it's a good time to remember that making sunscreen a daily habit is one of the best ways to protect your skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Three myths about sun protection and skin cancer: 1. Darker-skinned people don't have to worry about skin cancer.

Although darker-skinned people have more melanin, they are not immune to UV rays. Hispanic and Asian women need to take note too: a 2015 study found women in those ethnic groups were at greater risk for skin cancer than men.

Know Where Your Money Goes

Once you’ve gone through a few personal finance books, you’ll realize how important it is to make sure your expenses aren’t exceeding your income. The best way to do this is by budgeting. Once you see how your morning java adds up over the course of a month, you’ll realize that making small, manageable changes in your everyday expenses can have just as big of an impact on your financial situation as getting a raise.

Unfortunately, personal finance has not yet become a required subject in high school or college, so you might be fairly clueless about how to manage your money when you’re out in the real world for the first time.

To help you get started, we’ll take a look at eight of the most important things to understand about money if you want to live a comfortable and prosperous life.

Learn Self-Control

If you’re lucky, your parents taught you this skill when you were a kid. Take Control of Your Own Financial Future

It’s important to understand how income taxes work even before you get your first paycheck. When a company offers you a starting salary, you need to know how to calculate whether that salary will give you enough money after taxes to meet your financial goals and obligations. Fortunately, there are plenty of online calculators that have taken the dirty work out of determining your own payroll taxes, such as Paycheck City.

These calculators will show you your gross pay, how much goes to taxes and how much you’ll be left with, which is also known as net, or take-home pay.

The Bottom Line

Remember, you don’t need any fancy degrees or special background to become an expert at managing your finances. If you use these financial rules for your life, you can be as personally prosperous as the guy with the hard-won MBA.

Here is a time when making sensible choices will result in staying on track with your quest to be healthy and avoiding falling off of the healthy eating wagon. Eating in a restaurant does not necessarily mean that all of your healthy eating efforts will be wiped out.

With a little bit of planning, you can have a delicious meal that proves to be just as healthy as if

Here are some tips for making the right choices when eating out: Check out the menu in advance.

Most restaurants have their menu online. Checking it out before going can help provide an idea of the type of food offered, and time to consider what you should order.

Planning what you will order in advance can help you to escape the temptation of less healthier options. You can also ask your server to have the kitchen put all sauces on the side, instead of on your meal to control the amount of extra calories. You CAN make good choices because YOU are in control.

Avoid the bread It’s common for restaurants to bring a basket of bread or maybe

some chips and dip, "on-the-house" to your table, while you wait for your order. The best thing you can do is to avoid these extras completely, or at least eat only a limited amount. This will help you to avoid getting full on the wrong type of food. The bread is what fills you up with empty, non healthy calories. If you find it to be too tempting, ask your server to skip the bread basket, or just eat a small amount. Eating a whole roll or even more, will likely overfill you with unnecessary carbs.

Trust me, you will be satisfied and happy once the meal is over if you avoid the bread. Overeating carbs is a sure way to keep weight on.

Don’t be shy; ask your server for healthier options. Restaurants usually offer a few options that are healthier or lower in calories than other meals on their menus. But if you don’t find a specific section on the menu for this type of meal, you can always ask your server for a recommendation, or even to change one or two things with the preparation of your meal (i.e., putting the dressing on the side or grilling your meat or fish, instead of frying).

There is always a way to change a meal to make it more healthy. It’s a poor excuse when people say, “But we went to a restaurant; I didn't have any choice in what I ate." You can always help it and you can make good choices. Whether home or out, you are in control of what you put in your body.

Sides matter.

When choosing a side dish, be informed about some of the healthier options, such as vegetables, salad or soup. Most of the time, the side choices are pasta or potato, and a vegetable. Season 14 of STYLEWEEK Northeast is now over and we have been reminiscing on all of the exciting moments and details that caught our eye. STYLWEEK is special in the aspect that each season varies and comes into its own; new and interesting elements are always brought to the runway.

Frosted Faces The models of Born Again Vintage strutted down the runway, showing off their frosted faces. Long eyelashes, stark brows, and extreme highlight were all painted with white and silver pigments. The icey makeup paired beautifully with the cool-colored garments and brought out the grays, blues, and whites within the collection. The makeup alone stood as an accessory to each look and added a subtle shock factor.

Surprise Presentation Whiting & Davis, a luxury accessories brand, surprised closing night attendees with a special runway presentation and installation. Dolled up in Whiting & Davis’ Zara Collection, the models glistened down the runway and on to their live installation platform. Most of the jewelry showcased were their infamous mesh pieces, along with two models wearing vintage Whiting & Davis mesh tops.

Bold Braids Project Runway Alumnae, Nathalia J-Mag, showcased a collection where comfort and color meets grunge.

The unique hair choices accentuated her electrifying collection. Each model had their own personalized hair-do, but collectively they were all cohesive. High buns, braids, and a mix of both were all eye catching and intriguing.

SEEDlings Student Design With Recycled Materials Alexandra Nam

For the first time, STYLEWEEK partnered with Lincoln School and incorporated High School students to partake in the SEED Student Design Challenge. Willa Summers, a 12th grader from Lincoln School, constructed her warrior themed look primarily out of soda can tabs. They were fused together to resemble chain mail. Ninth grader, Brigitte Lynch Johnson, incorporated her love of physics and coding into her garment. Her look was comprised of umbrellas, bubble wrap, and recycled computer parts. Last but not least, Maeve McEnroe, an 11th grader, was inspired by the culture she was immersed in and experienced while living abroad with her family. McEnroe created a two piece look by weaving newspaper together.

Veils, Veils, Veils First time STYLEWEEK designer, Jamall Osterholm, showcased his collection on Thursday, February 22. Osterholm brought a monochromatic collection to the runway that featured various silhouettes. From oversized puffer garments to translucent fabrics, his collection was full of elemental surprises. One of the favorite factors of his collection were the sheer headdress veils a few of his models wore. They were striking and created a mysterious component to his overall collection.

Mix and Match APD broke all of the typical fashion rules and boundaries. DeBlasio stepped out of the box with her street chic collection by combining an array of textures, patterns, and colors. We saw cheetah print mixed with army print, plaid patterns paired with religious adorned fabric, along with sequins mixed with ruffles. Is Vinyl REALLY Final?

So is vinyl REALLY final? That all depends on what one means when they say “final”. Vinyl will definitely not rot or peel or anything close to these worrisome phenomena. It will “technically” last forever without having to touch it. There are some things to take into consideration if one is on the fence about installing vinyl on their home or commercial property, here are a few key focus points: Vinyl is still prone to mold & mildew growth, particularly as time goes on after it is installed, to remove this growth, it would have to be washed as necessary. Capping off an incredible first year of connecting business people throughout the state, Twisted Networking will host their one-year anniversary event on Thursday, April 26, at the Regency Plaza, beginning at 6:00 P.M. This event features interactive networking and forging relationships between guests. Several people will receive awards for their efforts in getting Twisted Networking off the ground. They will also unveil their new website, www.twistednetworking.com.

Jevonya Allen, the brainchild of the Twisted Networking/Rhode Island event, said that the concept fed off her personal experiences with various networking formats.

Allen also said that some of the events she attended were structured, which she loved, but at times, were too stringent for her lifestyle. There were others that were fun, but were too relaxed for her liking.

“Twisted Networking is a fusion of the positive aspects of several networking event formats. This event is designed to be fun, informative, unique, and a great use of time,” said Allen, who added that there are similar events happening in Virginia, Florida, and one coming soon to Massachusetts. “We have been getting a steady response from attendees from these events. We host monthly

networking meetings. Here in Rhode Island, we have one in Providence at Brass Monkey and one at Jacky’s Galaxy in North Providence.”

Allen said that there is some structure in how the night goes, but the response from guests has been positive. She noted that the events draw nearly 200 people from various industries and parts of the state. Since 2006, with the support of The Daffodil Project, a passionate beautification association, 866,500 daffodils have been planted throughout Newport. The goal of The Daffodil Project and the community is to plant 1 million daffodils in total.

Donations to Daffodillion, part of the organization, Alliance for a Livable Newport, has made it possible to purchase thousands of daffodil bulbs annually.

The bulbs are given to the Newport residents and businesses at no cost, who then plant them along with the City of Newport, the RI Bridge and Turnpike Authority, schools, gardening clubs, non-profit orga50 50ShopInRI ShopInRI

Donations are also welcomed and appreciated to support the need of distributing the free bulbs to schools, clubs and non-profit organizations. New Networking Groups Put Focus On Women Polka Dot Powerhouse networking is the first of its kind in R.I.

The role of a successful company comes from growing in order to make a profit. Accomplishing this goal means networking at various events. Some seminars are small and cater to specific industries. Other venues are larger and can handle hundreds of businesspeople fulfilling potential projects and new endeavors.

There are also times when someone has an epiphany and sets about to blaze their own path. That was the route Christine Gallo of Burrillville, who attended a Polka Dot Powerhouse networking event in Framingham, Massachusetts. She soon learned that while Massachusetts conducts several such chapters, Rhode Island does not have one in operation. She said that meeting encouraged her to begin a chanter closer to home.

“I enjoyed going to the event in Framingham because it was a comfortable, welcoming environment that focused on relationship building,” said Gallo who works as an entrepreneur who was a public school educator for over 15 years. “It was unlike any group I have attended in the past and felt like a mix of a mom’s group and networking. It was a middle ground between those two extremes.

However, making the Framingham meetings takes about an hour each way, and I wanted one that was closer to my home. I wanted to bring the energy of this group to the women of Blackstone Valley and RI.” Gallo went on to launch a local chapter of Polka Dot Powerhouse—Blackstone Valley RI Chapter. This networking event features issues and concerns that cater primarily to women. The group meets on the last Tuesday of every month at Harmony Lodge, 102 Putnam Pike, (Rte. 44) in Harmony. The event features a guest speaker that talks about a particular issue or service while focusing on helping women grow personally and professionally. There is time to network and have dinner also.

“The goal is having several of these event taking place throughout Rhode Island,” Gallo said. “Their policy is not to have meetings within a 20-mile radius of each other. So, the hope would be to hold one in the Providence/Cranston/ Warwick area and start another chapter in the southern part of the state.”

The Polka Dot Powerhouse networking event is scheduled to convene over the next several months. Those interested can attend the upcoming meetings on either March 27, April 24 and/or May 29. The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the final Tuesday of every month. The event costs $20, which includes dinner, tax and gratuity.

Visit the New & Improved Lincoln Woods Park and Beach

Lincoln Woods has always been known as a popular, public RI hidden treasure. Named after Abe Lincoln, the 16th president of the US, a portion of the park was first purchased in 1908, for $3,000. Between 1908 and 1910, 457 acres and several small ponds were added to the land that was purchased by the Lincoln Woods State Reservation. After several years, more land was added for today’s total of 627 acres.

As one of RI’s most popular state parks, Lincoln Woods attracts more than one million visitors per year. The park and all of its amenities have historically provided Rhode Island residents and visitors from all over the country the opportunity to explore nature in a safe, clean environment.

The park’s surrounding woods with its lush trees, plants and giant dramatic rocks, set the scene for a serene experience.

For many generations, people from all over have visited Lincoln Woods, with its history being its primary draw. The park has been enjoyed by those from all walks of life looking to spend time relaxing or re-charging in a tranquil setting while taking advantage of its freshwater beach, extensive picnicking facilities, sport fields, trails for mountain bikers, snowmobilers, and hikers, and designated trails for equestrians. Many other adventurers have also taken part in activities such as winter ice skating, trout fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking (with rental available for both and lessons available for kayaking) and bouldering, a type of rock climbing that does not utilize ropes or harnesses.

As a vital part of RI’s culture and economy, it was high time to make much needed changes and enhancements to the park and its surroundings which had not been updated since the 1980s. With the support of the governor and all of the state’s political leaders, a plan was put into motion for modernization, with well thought out ideas for “green” inspired improvements.

In December of 2015, following the design of Providencebased Brewster Thornton Group Architects, Ahlborg Construction Corporation of Warwick began construction on a project to improve the tired, run-down park with high hopes for the addition of re-energized, enhanced surroundings, and the construction of a new pavilion. After a total cost of $5.6 million of which about $4.1 million was paid by the state and approximately $1.4 million from a federal grant of the National Park Service, the results were beyond anyone’s expectations. The newly updated Lincoln Woods, with the new pavilion and its spectacular surroundings first opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony in May of 2017.

The main attraction of the new design includes a pavilion, comprised of three buildings, and is surrounded by an array of flowers, plants and bushes. The three visitor buildings are now connected to public and water sewer systems, and after removal of the former septic system, the beach swimming area was moved away from the area’s wetlands.

Within the pavilion which stands on a plaza across from the sandy white beach at Olney Pond, are an educational center, offices, concessions, bathroom facilities, showers, and a first aid station, all enveloped by a new parking lot.

Visitors to the refreshed park have described it as “gorgeous” and “a treasure” after marveling at its clean and fresh modern appearance. The amenities and aesthetics of the new park are as a result of the emphasis placed on preserving its history, as the design of the new facilities accentuates the park’s natural environment through the use of recycled materials, dynamic technology, and a contemporary design approach.

Some of the “green” aspects of the park include: a combination of docile ventilation and daylighting to minimize the need for cooling and heating in the buildings; highly efficient mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems to conserve natural resources; solar energy used for heating water in key

areas, including the main building and in public showers to reduce energy consumption of park operations; a landscape that includes native, non-invasive species that require minimal irrigation; a new, expanded parking area made of porous asphalt; and bike racks added to promote more active forms of transportation.

During the upcoming summer months, visitors to the park will be more than pleasantly surprised as they flock to the new beach to escape the heat with their families. Lifeguards will be on duty starting on the beach’s opening day.

The official 2018 opening day for the new Lincoln Woods’ state beach is Memorial Day. Lincoln Woods Park is also the perfect spot for family and friends to hold picnics and get together events. Permits are required for use of picnic areas and fields. Grill areas are available at $2.00 for the day.

Robert Yeremian: Entrepreneur & Comic Book Guy

By Jenn Lombari Robert Yeremian has certainly kept himself busy over the last 30 years! Having always been into comic books and collecting, he set out to open Time Capsule Comics in 1993, the year before he graduated from The University Of Rhode Island. He started earning his reputation in the business until 1998 when he closed the Warwick store and moved out to California for a change of scenery. In less than a year, he missed the Ocean State and was on his way home. Upon returning to Rhode Island, he had opened a small store in the area of Connimicut called Recycled Memories. But having caught word of a new website called Ebay, Yeremian’s online sales far surpassed that of the retail location and he quickly closed shop.

Teaming up with his old partner from his Time Capsule Comics days, together they occupied a warehouse in Cranston that was stocked well enough that they were able to consistently sell on Ebay for the next five years, making him at one point, one of Ebay’s Top 50 Sellers. They moved into different warehouses several times to accommodate inventory. After 9/11, business had slowed and the inventory was liquidated, he paid off any debt and took six months off to plan his next move.

That location, simply named The Time Capsule, now spreads across three storefronts at roughly 3500 square feet, and is a favorite place for collectors to search out comics, records, toys, video games and more over the past 15 years. A second Time Capsule location was opened about 9 years ago, just over the Rhode Island border in Seekonk, MA . Both stores buy and sell and even offer a subscription service for newer comic titles and they will also do special orders. Yeremian is always buying collections and favors comics published pre 1970’s and the better titles of the last 30-40 years.

He knew the owners of the building from going to church together when he was growing up and they were persuaded to rent him the small space. Inventory was scarce; It was nothing compared to what he had in the past. He made do with what he had and ended up stocking the store with a small selection of comics from his Ebay sales, and

called The Jazz Bastards. Jaehnig was running a night at the now defunct yet legendary nightclub, The Livingroom, and offered them a show. They remained friends and their bands often played shows together. Rourke, another local musician and employee at The Livingroom, was standing alongside his two friends on the last night The Livingroom would be open.

It was there that they made a pact that they would open a bar so that local musicians would have a place to play. It took many years and many learning experiences but in the winter of 2012, The Parlour opened its doors. The Parlour hosts local and national touring bands, has been voted best open mic several times, and their menu of farm to fork sliders, pizzas, and daily specials are consistently delicious. He notes that he “never would have opened The Parlour if it wasn’t for Aaron and Gregory and their expertise.”

So why stop there when there are movies to be made?!

Yeremian and friend, Jason Mayoh, spent time together in the past creating a comic book called Fib. It was based on the city of Providence and one issue even had a robot Buddy Cianci fighting the Big Blue Bug. After a short run with Fib, they decided to make a comic based on Rocky Point Park. There was so much to include in the stories, that it became a three part series. Benny’s was their biggest supporter and sold 5000 copies of the first issue alone. Yeremian and Mayoh had so much fun working on the comic together, and gathering photos and memorabilia to include in the trade paperback, that they decided to make a movie out of it. Mayoh was already involved in the movie industry, drawing storyboards, and doing set director jobs on Hollywood movies. They bought a good camera and got started on their project. It took about seven years of research, writing, interviewing people, collecting memorabilia and lost footage, but eventually it all came together. A sold out screening was held at The Park Theatre in Cranston on August 20, 2017. It was called Tales Of Rocky Point Park and it is available on DVD with two hours of bonus material.

friend and collector Ryan Gomersall, was pitched the idea of sharing the huge space and using half for storage and half for retail. Gomersall also had items in storage that would be a good fit, so Midway Antiques and Collectables was born. Opened in December of 2017, Midway is about 9000 square feet of comics, vintage clothing, furniture, old advertisements and other signage, rock n roll memorabilia, musical instruments and more.

So make a day of it and stop by The Time Capsule locations, Midway Antiques and Collectables, head over to the Parlour for a drink and a bite to eat, maybe catch some live music and then end your night at home watching Tales Of Rocky Point Park. That sounds like a lot to do but as you’ve read, it’s fun to stay busy!

Yeremian always wanted to have a business where he could sell the items that he would come across, and wouldn’t necessarily fit in with the inventory at the Time Capsule locations.

Do Dogs Dream?

Whether or not dogs dream isn’t known with scientific certainty, but it sure is difficult to imagine that they don’t. We’ve all watched our dogs demonstrate behaviors in their sleep that resemble what they do in a fully awake state. Paddling legs, whining, growling, wagging tails, chewing jowls, and twitching noses inspire us to wonder what our dogs are dreaming about.

What we know about dogs and dreams.

While our knowledge on this topic is very limited, the following known information helps us believe that dogs do indeed experience dreams. According to MIT News, Matthew Wilson, a professor of neuroscience at MIT, and Kenway Louie, a graduate student in 2001, have studied the relationships between memory, sleep and dreams. They found that when rats were trained to run along a circular track for food rewards, their brains created a distinctive firing pattern of neurons (brain cells). The researchers repeated the brain monitoring while the rats were sleeping. Low and behold, they observed the same signature brain activity pattern associated with running whether the rats were awake or asleep. In fact, the memories played at approximately the same speed during sleep as when the rats were awake.

Can we apply this to dogs?

Can we take what is known about dreaming in rats and humans and apply the information to dogs?

Wilson believes that we can."My guess is — unless there is something special about rats and humans — that cats and dogs are doing exactly the same thing," he said, according to USA Today’s website.

It is known that the hippocampus, the portion of the brain that collects and stores memories, is wired much the same way in all mammals. According to healthday.com, Professor Wilson says, “If you compared a hippocampus in a rat to a dog; in a cat to a human, they contain all of the same pieces.” He believes that as dogs sleep, images of past events replay in their minds, much the same way people recall experiences while dreaming.

In people it is known that most dreams occur during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, according to the National Institutes of Health. Dogs also experience periods of REM sleep. Psychology Today’s website ShopInRI 6868 ShopInRI

says that during REM their breathing becomes more irregular and shallow. There may be muscle twitching during REM and, when one looks closely, rapid eye movements behind closed eyelids can often be observed. It is during REM sleep that behaviors thought to be associated with dreaming (legs paddling, twitching, vocalizing, etc.) are most commonly observed.

What we want to believe about dog dreams.

When we observe our dogs as they sleep, it’s just about impossible to imagine that they are not dreaming. Just like the rats studied by Wilson and Louie, it is tempting to believe that our four-legged best buddies are reenacting their recent experiences; playing at the dog park, sniffing in the woods, chewing on a treasured bone, and chasing squirrels.

The National Institutes of Health says that Sigmund Freud theorized that dreaming was a “safety valve” for our unconscious desires. Perhaps he is correct, and, when our dogs sleep, they dream about catching the neighbor’s pesky cat, continuous belly rubs in conjunction with unlimited dog treats, and stealing the Thanksgiving turkey from the dining room table.

Eyelash Extensions-A Growing Trend in Cosmetology

What woman doesn’t want long, thick, full eyelashes without having to curl them and then apply several coats of mascara? There are so many brands of mascara out there, but it’s often difficult to find one that does all that it claims. Some can make your lashes stick together and clumpy, those that are not waterproof can make a mess of your face if they should get wet, and for those with very short eyelashes, mascara may not even do the trick.

When shopping for mascara, I find that no matter the price, they all have something about them that proves to be disappointing. They all claim to be the best choice to lengthen lashes, make lashes voluptuous, full, thick, and to not cause lashes to stick together. I have yet to find one that provides all of these benefits.

And if you choose one that is not waterproof, your face will be covered in the mascara if your eyes should get wet. What this all means to me is that there is no such thing as a perfect mascara that will provide results that are dramat72 ShopInRI

Many moons ago, women would apply their own fake eyelashes, and maybe some still do.

It may be the cheapest way out, but the task is time consuming, tedious, and must be done daily. In today’s day and age, time for most is limited and using it to apply eyelashes just isn’t practical.

Most women want long eyelashes because they make the eyes look bigger, brighter and more appealing-adjectives that can all be used to describe what eyelash extensions will do.

The results achieved come from three types of lash extensions: synthetic, silk and mink. The mink are more costly because they are natural and feathery looking, much lighter and put less stress on your own lashes-remember the old saying-you get what you pay for? This may be one of those examples. Size availability ranges from 6mm, all the way up to 17mm for those who think the longer the better. Once the size is selected, the lashes are applied one at a time using a specially formulated, semipermanent glue that should not irritate the eye nor damage the natural lash. Depending on your own lash health and length will deter-

mine the length and thickness that can be applied.

Getting eyelash extensions should be a pain free procedure if done properly.

Always check with the technician to ensure that the glue being used is safe and does not contain any harmful chemicals-one being formaldehyde. If you experience any burning or pain during the procedure, this should be a signal that something is amiss-here’s where you speak up and express your pain to the technician, who at this time should stop and figure out the problem.

If the extensions are applied correctly, they should not fall out. Do not rub your eyes, for this will likely damage the extensions and even your own lashes.To continue with the best results, do not submerge your face in water for the first 12 to 24 hours after a full set or a fill.

Being beautiful comes at a cost. A full set of eyelash extensions can range between $100 to $300 which lasts for about four weeks. That, however, is not the end of it. In order to maintain the new set of lashes, it is necessary to have fills because the extensions will shed along with your normal lash shedding.

The cost for a fill will generally run you about $55.

The key to ensuring the best eyelash extension experience is to seek out a qualified professional who has extensive experience with the procedure.

And remember, if you are looking for the cheapest way out, there could be negative consequences.

Horror movies nowadays are much different from what they were in the past.

However, as in prior years, many are also based on true events, such as Strangers, and many others. Winchester is one of these; telling the story of a widow who lives in an immense mansion with many unexplainable secrets that lie within.

The movie starts by telling the story of Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren), the wife of renowned gun manufacturer William Winchester. Sarah’s husband and daughter Annie's sudden deaths led her into a state of guilt and depression which caused her to consult a medium, as she was convinced that ghosts who were killed by Winchester firearms were haunting her. Sarah eventually moved to an estate in San Jose where she built the famed Winchester Mansion, a 7-story never-ending palace of rooms and mazes. The house was under continuous construction which caused many people to think that Sarah Winchester had gone insane. One night, Sarah's niece, Marion Marriott’s (Sarah Snook), and son Henry (Finn Scicluna-O’Prey), are possessed by a mysterious entity.

In 1906, the Winchester company hires Dr. Eric Price (Jason Clarke) to stay at the house and assess Sarah to prove whether or not she is competent and able to continue to run the Winchester firearm company.

Eric has his own problems as he is grieving over the loss of his wife and is extremely reliant on drugs and alcohol. Once he arrives at the house, he notices that things are extremely odd and starts to wonder if the things that people were saying about Sarah Winchester are actually true. One night he sees a ghost and convinces himself that it is just because of the drugs that he is taking.

Soon after when he is walking around the estate, Eric saves a possessed Henry’s life and that is when he realizes that there's something much more sinister going on.

When Eric meets with Mrs. Winchester the next day, Sarah starts speaking oddly, explaining to Eric that she can see ghosts and that she helps them move on and into another life. She then asks him if he has a drug problem and he refuses to say yes, 76 ShopInRI

although it turns out that she knew that he had a drug problem the entire time. Sarah tells him to stop using drugs, but later that night, he ignores her and goes to use them, but realizes that she has confiscated them and he is confined him to his room. When he escapes through a window, Eric notices Mrs. Winchester walking around in a black veil and decides to follow her. He watches her, seemingly possessed, design plans for a room and a creature scares him in the dark causing him to retreat to his room.

At their next session, Sarah discloses that she keeps files of every single person that has died at the hands of a Winchester rifle, and then it is revealed that Eric was actually shot with a Winchester rifle, and he survived keeping the bullet to memorialize the time he was dead. Sarah then explains how she creates the rooms and how the bad spirits that don't want to move on are sealed into the rooms with 13 nails. Later that night, a possessed Henry attempts to kill Sarah and she then realizes how dangerous the spirit is, deciding to personally remove the ghost from her home.

Overall, I liked the movie. I thought it was extremely well put together, and although I’m not sure it was based on true events (that I have not researched), I think the movie had great structure.

The actors that they chose for the characters were outstanding, especially the one who played Mrs. Winchester.

The one thing that I did not like was the fact that Mrs. Winchester's grandson was simply placed into the story, and I felt like although his story was what put everything in the main story into motion, soon as he had his moment in the spotlight everything else that happened to him was irrelevant to the story. I did appreciate the dynamic between Doctor Eric and Mrs. Winchester which I thought was strong.. Many of the jump-scares caught me off-guard, such as the mirror scene and the scene with the staircase that led to nowhere. Although I have not seen many horror movies, I can still understand basic horror movie concepts; and in the theater, I could predict what was going to happen, and I wanted to yell at the boy, “Don't look under the bed!!” or “Stop turning the mirror!!”, although there was a scene that definitely made me shake in my pants a bit. After seeing the movie, I am extremely compelled to go to the Winchester Mansion myself to check it out because ghosts and haunted entities definitely peak my interest. Being a horror movie virgin (as some would say), everything is scary for me because I've only seen a few movies like IT and Jaws. However, this movie was not one that would be on the top of my list. I give Winchester a 2.5 out of 6 Diamonds. Rated PG-13 for blood, violence, and jump-scares
