The Feast of the Seven Fishes is part of the Italian American Christmas Eve celebration, although it’s not called by this name in Italy and is not a “feast” in the stricter sense of “holiday,” but a grand meal shared with family and friends. Traditional Italians may celebrate Christmas Eve as a vigil or fasting day, and the abundance of seafood reflects the tradition of abstinence from red meat until the actual feast of Christmas Day itself.

Is your hair brittle and dry, with split ends and without any shine?

Well, I have some good news for you!

Cutting your hair is not the only solution.

With the proper care and gentle styling, you can bring vibrancy and shine back to your hair. Most damaged hair tells a story of minor abusive practices heaping small injury upon mounting damage. There may have been some rough experiences with styling tools, such as brushes, blow-dryers, curling irons, the use of flat irons on too high of a heat setting, etc. Even stress or an unbalanced diet can contribute to hair problems. In some cases, improper care is the sole culprit.

Over time, rough treatment dries the hair out, the naturally smooth cuticle layer becomes rough, the hair starts to appear brittle, and then split ends appear Put on Velvet Gloves to Care for Your Damaged Hair Treat your hair with loving care like a sick child, by keeping all potential harm away from it. If you’re searching for a unique holiday gift, or just want to surprise someone with a special treat to brighten their day, visit MIW – Made in Warren – an artist cooperative filled with beautiful handmade treasures seldom found in other stores.

The beautiful East Bay emporium boasts a fascinating collection of interesting gifts - a delightful shoppers’ paradise – filled with unique items created by more than 40 of the area’s finest artisans and crafters, some of whom have been established for decades, and others whom have been in the artisan business for a short time. Visitors will agree that a trip to MIW requires ample time to browse and enjoy all of the diverse and fascinating items the store has to offer.

According to Cait Marchetti, Public Relations Coordinator, the purpose of Made in Warren Artist Cooperative is to allow artists from Warren and nearby communities to effectively market their art and merchandise to the public through a coop-

erative effort. The storefront provides these artists greater exposure and sales for a small financial and time commitment. “It’s a really great community,” Marchetti begins. “Some of the artists are accomplished and some are newly emerging. We are a very diverse group and we’re always looking out for each other.”

Cheryl Perry, a potter, shares that the store has been open since January 2016, and has won several awards, including Rhode Island Monthly’s Best of Rhode Island Award for “Best New Coop” in 2016.

Marchetti notes that artists are selected by a juried committee, which meets monthly. “We’re always jurying new artists,” Perry tells. She emphasizes that all purchases made at MIW are tax-free. “Rhode Island has made artwork tax free throughout the state,” she tells.

“I think that Warren is trying to make this town a destination,” Perry adds, noting that the expansion

of local cafes, coffee shops and restaurants has been a boost to the community, as well as to the entire East Bay. The artistic collections at Made in Warren include unique wooden cutting boards, greeting cards, enamel jewelry, puzzles, photography, delightful watercolors, model ships, exquisite stained glass, adorned ceramic vessels, glasswork, textile arts, handwoven shawls, wood boxes and clocks, wood-fired ceramics, ball point pen art, paintings in several mediums, pottery, illustrations and books, lamps and wooden wall art, and other interesting items.

Marchetti, a talented artist and graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth who creates handpainted enamel jewelry and greeting cards is known for her beautiful designs that feature flora and fauna.

The original illustrations are thoughtfully designed to reflect relationships or convey narratives, typically of growth. For example, an early stage of life, like a seed, is featured on the side of each, and the fully grown version, like a bloom, on the front side, Each of these heirloom-quality enamels have unique differences and are wrapped with a matching greeting card to create a thoughtful and unique gift.

Noted watercolorist Elizabeth O’Connell says that while she enjoys beauty in all of its forms, “Mother Nature” is her favorite artist. “Her colors, creations, shapes, shifting perfections and imperfections fascinate me,” O’Connell tells, adding that she likes to paint outdoors in good weather. The watercolorist also shares that she enjoys capturing the beauty of natural life such as tiny salamanders and tree frogs, lady slippers, wild fish, chickadees, delicate ferns, baby birds and tiny mice. “All of my materials fit in a small bag,” O’Connell shares. “I make a sketch, then a palette, and then an under painting. If I work small, I often can finish in one sitting. A larger painting will need several sittings.”

Author and illustrator, Seth McCombs, creates illustrations, stories and comics that hint at unusual possibilities just out of sight of our daily lives. He grew up in the Ocean State and draws inspiration from mythology, marine life, local folklore and his own childhood imaginings. His first children’s book, “Old Salty Dog,” sold out of its original Crowd-Funded pressing of 1,000 copies and was recently released in paperback.

McComb’s new book, a field guide for children that shares the author’s love of monsters and spooky stories, was also recently published.

According to Marchetti, each month the coop features the work of a group of artists, who offer demonstrations, refreshments and live music.

Just in time for the holidays, Made in Warren Artist Cooperative will present “Winter Solstice,” December 21, 6-8 p.m., at the gallery. For every $10 purchase, shoppers will receive a raffle ticket to enter a store gift certificate or a gift basket.

The Unstoppable Todd Latimore and the Road To FOUND By: Jenn Lombari

Todd Latimore is a performer and a business man and his passion for life shines through in both. Latimore, 41, has lived and thrived in New York, Boston and Cape Cod, and has chosen the melting pot that is Providence, Rhode Island for his current business endeavor.

He had never worked a day of retail in his life nor did he ever go to business school. He attended the Boston Conservatory for dance. He left his job performing on Broadway in NYC to move to Cape Cod where he opened his first store. His love of unique items and specialty gifts, along with timing and opportunity, allowed him to open his first store in 2004; The Lili Pad. People had asked him , “How did you do it?” and he explained that he just “jumped right in. You get pushed in the pool, you have to learn how to swim real fast or you’ll drown.”

And swim he did! What did he sell there? “Anything I love!”

At a young age, Todd had a fondness for MackenzieChilds gifts. The Mackenzie-Childs company was based

15 minutes from where he had grown up in central New York. He would babysit, deliver newspapers, mow lawns, anything he could to earn money to buy pieces for his collection. In the 3 ½ years that he owned and operated The Lili Pad, he became one of the country’s biggest Mackenzie-Childs accounts.

At this time, he was getting homesick for the stage and decided to move back to New York briefly, where he had the opportunity to work at the Mackenzie-Childs flagship store in the city. Then it was onto Easton, MA. There was a real estate opportunity there for him and his husband, and it was central to Providence and Boston, where he would perform in drag as “Lili Whiteass”. He never really knew much about Providence.

He was always just passing through to perform or to enjoy the many culinary delights the city has to offer.

The house in Easton was renovated into what he calls a castle, lived in and eventually sold when he started looking for real estate in Providence.

Little did he know, another project awaited them.

Some things are just too good to pass up. This wasn’t the first or second time they had taken on a project like this. They had also bought, and flipped houses in Dorchester,MA prior to coming to Rhode Island to live. He and his husband, Brian, were looking for a live in work space. Somewhere they could have a home, as well as a place to repurpose objects to sell and to use themselves, and a place where Todd could open another retail location. Soon he would discover that loft spaces that were in remodeled factories were all occupied. They were all rented for $1550/mo and they weren’t in “nice” neighborhoods and they were two small bed rooms and not even updated with modern appliances. With the help of a local real estate superstar, Jane Driver, of Armory Properties, they bought the old AT Cross Pen and Pencil Factory. The factory was built in 1880. An old wooden beam structure that had had the life choked out of it after years of neglect. But it had so much potential.

Unlivable at the moment, they still needed a place to live so Jane found them a beautiful Victorian home on the West End that they could occupy while renting the other two floors. That became their home.

“We fell in love with the neighborhood!” Surrounded by gay people, straight people, all religions and nationalities… This was what they were looking for.

Soon after, Latimore decided to take on the space at 379 Broadway on Providence’s West End. This is where FOUND would be born. After one year in the 350 square foot shop, FOUND was moved to a much bigger space at 253 South Main Street in Providence.

It’s true what they say: “Location! Location!”

VENISON STEW WITH PUFF PASTRY

Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails

Ingredients: Olive oil 3 red onions, peeled and chopped 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped 3 tablespoons butter, plus extra 3 carrots, peeled and chopped 3 celery stalks, trimmed and chopped 10 oz. baby chopped

3 lbs. venison, cut into 3/4" cubes A few sprigs of fresh rosemary, leaves picked and chopped Sea salt and black pepper 2 bottles (24 oz.) Revival Brewing Company Double Black IPA, with a swig for the cook 3 tablespoons flour 12 oz. freshly grated cheddar cheese 1 1/2 pounds store-bought puff pastry (all butter is best) 1 large egg, beaten

The cold weather is here. It's time for some serious comfort food.

My father-in-law is an avid hunter, so I use venison to make this dish.

But you can easily substitute beef. My favorite beer for this recipe is the Double Black IPA from RI’s own Revival Brewing Company.

DIRECTIONS: Pre-heat the oven to 375.

In a large oven-proof pan, heat a few tablespoons of the olive oil. Add the onions and fry gently for about 10 minutes. Turn the heat up and add the garlic, butter, carrots, celery and mushrooms. Stir well, then add venison, rosemary, a pinch of salt and about a teaspoon of pepper.

Saute on high for about 4 minutes, then add the beer, making sure you take a swig for luck! Stir in the flour and add just enough water to cover. Bring to a simmer, cover the pan with a lid or foil, and place in the preheated oven for about 1 1/2 hours.

Remove after 1 1/2 hours and stir. Put it back in the oven and cook another hour, until the meat is cooked and the stew is rich, dark and thick. If it's still liquidy, place the pan on the stove top and reduce until the sauce thickens. (You don't want a soupy stew or you'll get soggy puff pastry later.) Remove the pan from the heat and stir in half the cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste and set aside to cool.

Depending on whether your puff pastry comes in sheets or a block, you'll need to use a rolling-pin to get it into sheets about 1/8" thick. Butter a good-sized pie dish or an oven-proof terrine. Line the dish with the sheets of pastry, letting the pastry hang over the sides. Pour in the stew, even it out with a spatula, and add the rest of the grated cheese on top.

Use another 1/8" thick sheet of pastry (or a couple if they're not wide enough) to cover the top of the pie dish. Lightly crisscross the top with a knife, then fold over the overhanging pieces of pastry over the lid, making it look nice and rustic. Don't cut or throw any of the pastry away! Use as much as you can, since everyone will want some.

Brush the top with the beaten egg and then bake the pie on the bottom of the oven for about 45 minutes, until the pastry has cooked, and it's beautifully puffed and golden. Serve with a side of peas (and beer!)

The Feast of the Seven Fishes

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is part of the Italian American Christmas Eve celebration, although it’s not called by this name in Italy and is not a “feast” in the stricter sense of “holiday,” but a grand meal shared with family and friends. Traditional Italians may celebrate Christmas Eve as a vigil or fasting day, and the abundance of seafood reflects the tradition of abstinence from red meat until the actual feast of Christmas Day itself.

Today, it is a meal that typically consists of seven different seafood dishes. It originates, however, from Southern Italy, where it is known simply as The Vigil (La Vigilia). This celebration commemorates the wait, the Vigilia di Natale, for the midnight birth of the baby Jesus.

The long tradition of eating seafood on Christmas Eve dates from the Roman Catholic tradition of abstinence. The

term “Feast of the Seven Fishes” was popularized because the number seven represents the seven sacraments and nine for the Trinity multiplied by three. Over the years, the number of courses served by most Italian families has decreased, but fish still remains the main feature of the meal. Some Italian Americans serving several courses, with a wellbalanced selection of dishes using a variety of different fish and shellfish an appetizer, a soup, a salad, a fried fish, a baked, grilled, or stewed fish, and a pasta dish.

In other households, the meal may actually include seven, eight, or even nine specific fishes that are considered traditional. However, some Italian-American families have been known to celebrate with nine, eleven or thirteen different seafood dishes. “Seven” fishes as a fixed concept or name is unknown in Italy itself. In some of the oldest Italian

American families there was no count of the number of fish dishes. Dinner began with whiting in lemon, followed by some version of clams or mussels in spaghetti, baccalà and onward to any number of other fish dishes without number. Some have suggested that the idea of “seven” fishes originated in restaurants.

The most famous dish for Southern Italians is baccalà (salted cod fish). The custom of celebrating with a simple fish such as baccalà reflects customs in what were historically greatly impoverished regions of Southern Italy, as well as seasonal factors. Fried smelts, calamari and other types of seafood have been incorporated into the Christmas Eve dinner over the years.

A great way to prepare a Christmas Eve meal is to combine the fish with the Italian favorite food of pasta. Below you will find a recipe that is sure to satisfy the tradition of an Italian American Christmas Eve, as well as your family and friends.

Spaghetti with White Clam Sauce Ingredients: 1 pound linguine 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon olive oil 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1/4 cup dry white wine 18 littleneck or chowder clams Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon chopped fresh Italian, flat leafed parsley

Preparation:

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta, following the package instructions, until al dente.

Light white and full white VARIATIONS: The same dish may be prepared without removing the clams from their shells, making for a less formal, hands-on meal. Warm the olive oil in a pot large enough to hold the clams in a single layer. Add the garlic and cook until softened but not browned, about 2 minutes. Add the wine and allow to simmer and sweeten, about 2 minutes.

Add the clams and parsley, and cover the pot. Cook until the clams open, about 5 minutes.

Season with salt and pepper. Remove from the heat and spoon over cooked pasta. Be sure to discard any unopened clams.

2. Meanwhile, warm 1/2 cup of the olive oil in a high-sided saucepan set over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook until softened- about 2 minutes.

Add the wine and allow it to cook away slightly-about 1 minute. Add the clams and their juice, and season with salt and pepper. Cook until the broth froths to a level of 1 to 2 inches. Remove from the heat. Stir in the parsley. Drain the pasta and toss in a serving bowl with the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil.

Distribute evenly among six dinner plates. Top with equal portions of the sauce, and serve immediately.

Ricotta Maple Pumpkin Pie

15 oz cooked or canned pumpkin 5 large eggs 2 cups Supreme Ricotta Cheese ¼ cup milk ¼ cup maple syrup 1½ tbsp melted butter 1 cup sugar Dash of lemon juice 1 tbsp cornstarch ½ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp ginger ½ tsp nutmeg Pie crust (single 10” shell) Sift sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg together in a medium bowl.

Set aside. Beat eggs slightly in large bowl with high speed mixer. Add milk, maple syrup, pumpkin, Supreme Ricotta, melted butter, lemon juice and sifted ingredients to beaten eggs.

Beat this mixture at medium speed until well blended and smooth (about 5 mins).

Pour mixture into uncooked 10” pie crust.

Bake in 450 oven for 15 mins.

Reduce temperature to 350 and continue to bake for 50 minutes. Serves 10.

Supreme Ricotta Cheesecake Filling 4 eggs 1 cup sugar 1⁄4 cup flour 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup light cream

2 cups Supreme Ricotta Cheese (Whole Milk) 3 tsps lemon juice 3 tbsps grated lemon rind

Crust 1 cup graham cracker crumbs 1⁄4 cup powdered sugar 3 tbsps melted butter

Prepare Crust Blend crumbs, sugar and butter.

Press firmly and evenly on bottom and sides of buttered 9” spring form pan.

Prepare Filling Beat eggs until light and fluffy. Add sugar, flour, Supreme ricotta and cream – beating well after each ingredient is added. Add vailla, lemon juice and rind. Pour into lined pan. Bake in 300º oven for 45 mins.

Red Wine Braised Brisket with Sweet Potatoes By: Chef Adam Baffoni

To me, winter is all about hearty dishes. Braising is a very simple cooking technique that can be used on almost type of meat. Typically, tougher cuts of meat are braised because it makes them tender enough to fall apart. This isn’t the quickest dish to put together, because braising something as tough as a beef brisket takes a few hours, but the time and effort are well worth the amazing outcome. This can be served on its own or over any starch you’d like, including pasta, polenta or rice.

Directions Ingredients: 2 lbs. beef brisket, cut into large chunks 1 large sweet potato, diced 2 cups red wine 2 carrots, diced 1 white onion, diced Salt and pepper, to taste Oil, for cooking 2 tbsp. butter

Heat a small amount of oil in a large, heavy bottomed pan over medium high heat. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Once the pan is hot, add the pieces of brisket and cook, flipping occasionally until they are browned on all sides. Transfer the brisket to a large oven safe pan or deep casserole dish. Add the carrots and onion to the hot pan and saute for five minutes. Season the vegetables with a good amount of salt and pepper and add the red wine to the pan. Scrape the pan with a spoon while the wine boils to dissolve all of the brown bits from the pan into the wine. Remove the wine and vegetables from the heat and transfer them into the pan with the brisket. Add just enough water to completely cover the brisket and cover with a tight fitting lid, or with plastic wrap and foil. Put the brisket in the oven and bake for 2-3 hours, until it is very tender. (If you use plastic wrap, remember to remove it before the dish goes into the oven.) Once each hour or so, check the brisket by uncovering the pan and piercing it with a fork. Once it feels very soft, it is done. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool slightly.

To make the sweet potatoes, turn the oven up to 375 degrees. Toss the potatoes in a large bowl with oil, salt, and pepper, and lay them out on a baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the potatoes begin to brown.

Once the brisket has cooled slightly, remove it from the braising liquid. Strain the braising liquid and reserve. Discard the leftover vegetables. Once the brisket is cool enough to handle, use your hands to completely shred it. All of this can be done ahead of time.

To serve, heat a small amount of oil in a large pan over medium high heat. When it is hot, add the shredded brisket and cook until it is brown on the bottom. Add the sweet potatoes, about 2 cups of braising liquid cook, stirring occasionally until the liquid reduces slightly and is absorbed into the brisket. Stir in the butter to slightly thicken the sauce and serve.

Candy Kiss Chocolate Chip Christmas Cookies

This recipe of Candy Kiss Chocolate Chip cookies has always been a favorite of my family and a Christmastime tradition. They are easy to make and can be made as a single cookie, or added to a cookie tray. There are variations to this recipe, some using peanut butter as an ingredient, however; for families with allergies, this recipe is without worry.

Ingredients: 2 ½ cups flour 1 tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt 1 cup butter ½ cup granulated sugar ¾ cup brown sugar 1 small package instant vanilla pudding mix 2 tsp vanilla 1 egg ½ package chocolate chips (red and green) ½ cup dark chocolate chips (optional) 1 bag of Hershey Chocolate Candy Kisses or Hershey’s Candy Cane Kisses for a different taste and more of a holiday appearance. (Mixing it up with both flavors is another option.) Holly Sprinkles (optional) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Stir baking soda, flour and salt; set aside.

3. Combine butter, sugars and pudding mix, beating until fluffy.

4. Add vanilla and egg; beat until smooth.

5. Add dry ingredients; mix well.

6. Stir in chocolate chips.

7. Roll dough into balls and bake for 8-10 minutes.

8. Remove cookies from oven, place on a wire rack to cool.

9. Before cookies cool, press candy Kiss in the middle of the cookie.

10. While the Candy Kiss is still warm, gently add holly sprinkles to the top of it.

Rose Mary’s Pecan Pralines

Who can resist a praline – the traditional handmade Southern confection and indulgence whose prized family recipe is usually passed from generation to generation just like a well-kept secret? Often pronounced “prah-leen,” these rich, buttery treats have a worthy spot in Southern culinary history, just like gumbo, Beignets, Andouille sausage and ham hocks.

While pralines have been a staple in the Deep South for many years, one local confectioner is making a big splash on the local food scene with Rose Mary’s Pecan Pralines.

Introduced to the Ocean State late last year by talented entrepreneur Greg Mundy of Providence whose delicious candies are creating a taste sensation for folks with a sweet tooth and who appreciate good, down-home Southern cooking.

“My mom and my grandmother were amazing cooks,” begins Mundy, as he whips up a batch of pralines lovingly made last week in the shared commercial kitchen at Hope and Main in Warren. “Aunt Rose’s house was the place to go if you wanted to eat well,” Mundy continues, adding that his family has produced several generations of talented cooks and bakers. “There weren’t too many things that my mother didn’t know how to cook,” he adds, noting that it wasn’t uncommon for his mother, Rose Mary, to prepare a fabulous spread of food for large holiday dinners for as many as 50 people. “For her it was a joy and made with a lot of love,” Mundy shares, adding that homemade pralines and fudge were always enjoyed as part of any festive family celebration.

Rose Mary (Dieudonne) Mundy, a native of New Orleans, who passed away in 2001.

Mundy, who works in clinical trials management, started the praline company in Philadelphia in 2007, after friends encouraged the confectioner to sell the pralines after sampling the candies at a church-related fundraiser. He took that success one step further last year after he moved to Providence, and decided to produce Rose Mary’s Pecan Pralines at the Warren-based commercial kitchen.

According to Mundy, the family recipe, which was developed in New Orleans by the entrepreneur’s greatgrandmother almost 100 years ago, uses creamery butter, sugar, pecans and evaporated milk. All of the ingredients are organic, after Mundy discovered the availability of organic evaporated milk in a local supermarket a few years ago. “I wanted to distinguish myself as an organic praline maker,” the confectioner emphasizes. He adds that in addition to making the candies with pecans, he also creates pralines using cashews, after a friend who enjoys pralines was unable to eat pecans. Mundy purchases organic nuts from wholesalers in Texas, and produces the confections in small batches and, like his mother, the pralines are always made with love. According to Mundy, the candy is made using “artisanal techniques” prepared on the stovetop in large copper-bottom pots. The pralines are then individually wrapped and heat-sealed to ensure maximum freshness.

“No preservatives are used in our recipe and our pralines are gluten-free,” Mundy adds.

Pralines have a unique flavor. For some, it is like a brown

sugar fudge with pecans in it. “These pralines remind me of Canadian maple candy,” he continues. “Pralines are also reminiscent of Penuche fudge - but more buttery and creamy with caramel and maple overtones. With every bite of our pralines there is an explosion of rich, buttery, nutty morsels of pecans.”

While the confections have an extended shelf life of six

months, Mundy recommends that the candies be eaten quickly.

“My preference is that the pralines be enjoyed at the height of their freshness - when they are super buttery and creamy,” he says. The pralines are sold individually (they make great party/ wedding favors), as well as in five count or ten count boxes.

Rose Mary’s Pecan Pralines can also be shipped by the USPS. Locally, the confections are available at Imagine Gift Shop and at Dave’s Market, both in Warren. The candies are also occasionally incorporated into the ice cream at Three Sisters Ice Cream located on the East Side in Providence.

“They are a great Christmas gift,” Mundy shares, adding that

the pralines can also be served at Super Bowl or Mardi Gras parties, or even as a Valentine’s gift.

The entrepreneur plans to take his candy-making business national, and hopes to start making healthier-type foods and snacks with a Southern flair. He’s been enlivened by the local culinary scene and would like to establish a New Orleans-style restaurant, modeled by the delicious cooking inspired by his family’s rich culinary heritage.

“The greatest thing for me is that people who have never tried our products will bubble over with enthusiasm and remark how delicious our pralines are,” Mundy says, smiling. “I feel like I am an ambassador for Southern cooking.”

The confectioner’s wife, Dr. Phyllis Dennery, is the Chair of Pediatrics at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. The couple has two adult children, Ariana and Miles.

Get to know the Surgeons at Leonard Hair Transplant Associates From Dr. Robert Leonard: Hi, I’m Dr. Robert Leonard, Founder and Chief Surgeon of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates. For over 30 years, treating men and women suffering from hair loss has been my passion. Prior to becoming the “Hair Doctor”, my plan was to become an OB/Gyn. But after my wife, a fellow physician, became pregnant with our first child, I left my OB/Gyn residency for a more family-friendly specialty, training under Dr. C.P. Chambers. Dr. Chambers was a leading hair transplant surgeon back in the days when early Joe Biden-style hair plugs were the industry standard. Male and female pattern baldness, a condition affecting some 80 million Americans, was also beginning to draw more serious attention from medical professionals.

It was a huge risk to leave an established residency program, and I really didn’t know much about hair transplantation, but when I decide to do something, I jump in all the way.

New surgical procedures and an aging boomer generation seeking its fountain of youth have changed the game dramatically over the past 31 years. Our business has grown to include six offices in three states, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. My partner, Dr. Matthew Lopresti and I perform surgeries in two locations, Cranston and Newton. The other offices are for consultations, where we provided free-of-charge consultations and with a large dose of hand holding and psychological counseling.

For many people, losing their hair is heart wrenching; they’ll talk about not going anywhere without a baseball cap on, or never going swimming. One big concern of mine is bringing this issue out of the closet.

Hair transplant surgery has been around since the late 1950s, but the results in those days often appeared less-than-natural.

Since I began in this field, thankfully, the cosmetic results have dramatically improved for the better.

Surgical transplants that once took multiple sessions to complete are now done in one office visit of 4 to 6 hours, under local anesthesia. Hair grafts are harvested by two different surgical methods. One technique involves removing a strip of hair-bearing skin from the donor area, which is then

dissected into tiny grafts of one to four follicles apiece.

The other method of harvesting grafts is called the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), where grafts are removed individually after being removed with a tiny punch.

These grafts are then surgically implanted in balding or thin areas on top. Each technique is offered at Leonard Hair Transplant Associates.

Nothing is different between the two methods as far as the recipient area (where the grafts are being planted) goes. The area to be transplanted is marked, numbed, and then the surgeon will make many hundreds of tiny incisions into which the grafts are placed. The newly transplanted hairs begin to grow in about four months and they will grow and grow and grow! At 18 months, transplanted hair is fully grown. These new hairs can be washed, combed, cut, curled, dyed, and otherwise treated as your own naturally growing hair—because it actually is!

The other therapies that are very important for my patients to use are medically proven, scientifically sound treatments that stop the progression of their hair loss. Many patients are thrilled if they just could stop losing more hair and stay where they are. These excellent treatments are: Rogaine Foam, Propecia, and the CapillusRx 312 Laser Device. I tell my patients all the time that it is easier to keep the hair that they have rather than to replace it. And, it is so very true!

Dr. Lopresti and I are very honest with people during their free hair loss consultation; not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. If a woman, for example, has thinning hair all over her head, then I usually won’t have enough hair to transplant. Or, if someone has totally unrealistic expectations as far as results, then I will not transplant that individual.

It has been a sincere honor and a great pleasure to have taken care of thousands of patients with their particular hair loss problem during these three decades of my long career. CrossFit Type Workouts

By Susan Gazerro What is CrossFit or a CrossFit type workout? It’s a workout that uses your own body weight for resistance in order to improve your strength.

I have a two minute speech I give to all my new clients which starts with when doing a cardio workout, whether it be walking, running, swimming, bicycling, etc., you are burning fat for your exercising time period. When doing resistance training, your body continues to burn fat for an average of two days, depending on your size, height and weight. Weight and resistance training are not just about building muscle, they are also about burning

fat and calories. I do love cardio workouts because that is the only way to work the heart muscle.

However; weight and resistance training are building and toning muscle all while burning fat.

Back to the workout. CrossFit type workouts are a combination of high-intensity interval training and weightlifting. Most people who try this usually get hooked right away because it pushes their limits.

This takes your workout to another level and will leave you a feeling of empowerment over your body. It is definitely an amazing workout

for those who have a solid aerobic and strength base. Here are 5 awesome results you will see from this type of workout: 1. Improvement of your health: With this type of training, you will be working on your strength, coordination, flexibility, power, speed, agility, and balance. This is what is referred to as a complete workout. It will also help you be more aware and in control of your own body.

2. Super intense workout: You don’t actually need to spend long hours at the gym. I had a CrossFit coach work

on one with me three times a week and was in the best shape of my life. Those workouts were only 20 to 25 minutes per session, but they were so effective, I was in the best shape. What’s a Super Intense Workout? You do 3 or 4 intense and fast-paced routines and repeat them continuously until the end of the session. My coach, Will, told me to be repetitive. Basically, you need to burn the muscle group(s) to be effective. Training this way with Will made me a better fitness instructor.

3. Keeps you motivated: This type of training does not provide a chance to take long breaks or wander around the gym while waiting for a machine to be available. You are in a zone-a very face paced zone. It’s all or nothing!

You have to keep pushing yourself through it until finished. This can be very motivating, because again, there’s no room for down time and the results are seen almost immediately.

4. Interesting workouts: You will never get bored. I have been teaching for years and trust and believe any of my clients would say, “it’s always different”. I never repeat a class or workout session. The main reason is to keep people interested. I change it up everyday because trying something slightly different everyday keeps it interesting.

I also want to make sure all the muscle groups are being worked.

5. Meeting new people: If you do go to CrossFit or a gym that offers this type of workout, it is a great way of building new relationships. People who start doing it usually create a nice bond with the rest of the class because

they all have a common goal. So you start working and helping each other to push boundaries and get in the best shape possible. It creates a sense of community and belonging.

When I first became an instructor, I went to my local parish and asked the priest if I could use their newly built basketball gym to hold fitness classes. The people that came were those that didn’t feel comfortable going to a gym, or maybe the times were convenient for those that worked. I also had a full time traveling job which is why I didn’t want to go to a big gym and have to frequently ask for subs. I also wanted people who didn’t make exercise a priority, to start exercising. The class grew weekly and it was apparent that friendships were forming and bonds were being made. Here we are approximately twenty years later and those bonds are still in place. It’s true that when participating in a class, everyone has something in common. For the people at the church class, it was their time to take care of themselves. It wasn’t about the kids, or the spouse, or the job; it was about concentrating on being healthy and fitting in. Exercise is definitely good for your health. It keeps your insides moving and working. It is obviously good for weight management, but it is also very beneficial for your mind. It’s the best mental therapy! So bottom line; there are only pros, and no cons when it comes to exercise!

Ride the Polar Express into Christmas Many of us remember sitting on our parents’ laps and reading The Polar Express, written in 1985 by Chris Van Allsburg. Now those young fans who grew up with the book may have children of their own. Rhode Island has very special ties to this story, now celebrating its thirtieth anniversary with more than 12 million copies sold; the author is a former professor at Rhode Island School of Design and lives right here in Providence. To celebrate the holiday season, you can pick up the book at a local bookstore, or you can watch the movie that was made in 2004, starring Tom Hanks. Or, better yet, pull on your Christmas jammies and take a ride on one of the Polar Express train ride attractions in Woonsocket or Newport, Rhode Island, and nearby in South Carver and Hopedale, Massachusetts. Get ready to ride the choo-choo to the North Pole, starting not far from your home!

No one ever expects to have to file an insurance claim for damage caused to their property. I believe that the vast majority of home and business owners alike simply consider insurance a ‘necessary evil’, paying the premium bill as it comes in, but never really giving it much thought beyond that.

Until a tree falls on your home, a hot water tank gives out, an ice dam backs up, or a wide variety of other potential culprits of property damage occur, many individuals simply do not have a clue as to the quality of their coverage, or what it actually covers. In fact, many go through the motions, seduced by the promise of the “lowest priced insurance one will find…”, etc. as they know they “have to” have it, but don’t really know much about it.

When an incident of damage does occur, that is when consumers REALLY find out (if they did not know already) what their coverage provides. Over the years, we have been very fortunate (or unfortunate, depending upon how you look at things) to have had a good amount of experience working with insurance companies. In my opinion, there are certainly some companies that are very good, some that are “ok”, some that are not really that great, and others everywhere in between. To me, what really makes a “good” insurance company is the way in which they take care of their insured when a claim is filed.

When we are called to help a client put things back together after something has happened, we know that the process is going to go one of two ways. The first and most ideal path the claim could take is that the adjuster that is assigned the claim is of reasonable mindset and is very fair throughout the entire ordeal. The other path is the exact opposite. The adjuster that is assigned the claim makes it their mission to try to ensure that the insurance company is able to settle the claim for the least amount of money out of their pockets as possible. There is no middle ground or gray area from what I have experienced, and each path has a 50/50 shot of happening. If you are lucky enough to be connected with a “good” adjuster, count your blessings. If you get dealt the hand of the adjuster trying to “nickel and dime,” and help as little as possible, all is not lost.

There are people out there known as independent adjusters who can be hired to help out with what can seem like a VERY daunting situation. They serve as advocates for the insured, will ensure that your claim is maximized to its correct coverage, and typically take a modest fee of 10% of a claim’s settlement amount.

Even if in what you feel to be a “fair” situation, it still may not be a bad idea to get a reputable independent adjuster involved to make sure everything goes as well as possible. Going through a situation where a claim has to be filed can be intimidating enough; having the feeling of your insurance company working against you can leave one feeling frustratingly hopeless.

Real Estate Statistics from the 3rd Quarter Frank Anzivino

It’s no secret the Real Estate market is making a major comeback. The Rhode Island Association of Realtors released it’s third quarter statistics on November 9th reiterating this fact; the market is getting better. The median sales price of single family homes increased 8.2% and now is at the highest price it has been in over 10 years, $265,000. If that isn’t impressive enough, condominium sales rose a whopping 15.1%!

The median sale price for condominiums in 2016 was $195,000 however; in 2017, we are at a median sale price of $224,400.

Although we’ve made some serious improvement, there is no guarantee the upward trend will continue.

There is currently a pending tax reform that could impact homeownership. According to the Rhode Island Association of Realtors, 95% of American families are in jeopardy of losing their home ownership tax benefits. On average, tax payers are saving roughly $2,500 through home ownership tax deductions, however; the Government is threatening to take those benefits away. The elimination of these tax benefits could result in a loss of home value of $37,000 for the average homeowner.

Time to Review Your Investment Strategy for the Year For example, if you owned some stocks that underperformed due to unusual circumstances – and even events such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma can affect the stock prices of some companies – you may not need to be overly concerned, especially if the fundamentals of the stocks are still sound.

On the other hand, if you own some investments that have underperformed for several years, you may need to consider selling them and using the proceeds to explore new investment opportunities.

As the year draws to a close, it’s a good time to review your progress toward your financial goals. But on what areas should you focus your attention?

Of course, you may immediately think about whether your investments have done well. When evaluating the performance of their investments for a given year, many people mistakenly think their portfolios should have done just as well as a common market index, such as the Standard & Poor’s 500. But the S&P 500 is essentially a measure of large-company, domestic stocks, and your portfolio probably doesn’t look like that – nor should it, because it’s important to own an investment mix that aligns with your goals, risk tolerance and return objectives.

It’s this return objective that you should evaluate over time – not the return of an arbitrary benchmark that isn’t personalized to your goals and risk tolerance.

Your return objective will likely evolve. If you are starting out in your career, you may need your portfolio to be oriented primarily toward growth, which means it may need to be more heavily weighted toward stocks. But if you are retiring in a few years, you may need a more balanced allocation between stocks and bonds, which can address your needs for growth and income.

So, assuming you have created a long-term investment strategy that has a target rate of return for each year, you can review your progress accordingly. If you matched or exceeded that rate this past year, you’re staying on track, but if your return fell short of your desired target, you may need to make some changes. Before doing so, though, you need to understand just why your return was lower than anticipated.

Investment performance isn’t the only thing you should consider when looking at your financial picture over this past year. What changed in your life? Did you welcome a new child to your family?

If so, you may need to respond by increasing your life insurance coverage or opening a college savings account. Did you or your spouse change jobs? You may now have access to a new employer-sponsored retirement account, such as a 401(k), so you’ll need to decide how much money to put into the various investments within this plan. And one change certainly happened this past year: You moved one year closer to retirement. By itself, this may cause you to re-evaluate how much risk you’re willing to tolerate in your investment portfolio, especially if you are within a few years of your planned retirement.

MOVIE REVIEW

Thor - Ragnarok

With Avengers: Infinity War fast approaching, we are about to find out where Thor and Hulk have been since Civil War. Now, with Thor: Ragnarok, we finally learn where they have gone, and boy have they been on an adventure.

After spending almost two years searching for the Infinity Stones, the movie opens with Thor, trapped by the fire demor Surtur (Voiced by Clancy Brown). Surtur explains that Odin (Anthony Hopkins) is not on Asgard anymore, and that because of this Ragnarok has begun. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) escapes back to Asgard; however, much has changed. Heimdall (Idris Elba) is thrown from his post, and Thor learns that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is posing as his father, Odin. Thor convinces Loki to take him to see Odin, however; when they arrive they learn that he is not there. A portal appears, and the brothers are transported to Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) home. Strange explains that Odin is in Norway, and the brothers transport there.

Thor and Loki make it to a cliff in Norway where their father Odin speaks to them. He reveals that his time is up and that Loki and Thor have an older sibling, and disappears with a shimmer of golden light. Then, a black and green portal appears behind the boys, and Hela (Cate Blanchett) appears. She demands that they kneel, and they refuse. Thor throws Mjolnir at her, and she stops the hammer, shattering it. Loki immediately calls on Skurge (Karl Urban) to transport them back to Asgard. Hela Perseus throws the two from the Bifrost and into space.

Thor awakes on a trash planet called Sakarr where he is trapped by scavengers. When they are stopped by a girl named Scrapper 142 (Tessa Thompson), she electrocutes Thor and takes him to the Grandmaster ( Jeff Goldblum).

He tells Thor that he has to compete in the Contest of Champions; and that the only way to gain his freedom is to beat the Champion. While there, Thor finds Loki who insists that they are not related. Thor eventually realizes that Scrapper 142 is actually a Valkyrie from Asgard. She gets angry at him, and Thor is dragged away to the match.

When Thor gets to the match, he learns that Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) is the Champion, which makes him ecstatic. The battle ensues and Thor manages to produce lightning out of thin air; but he loses the match, nonetheless. When he wakes up, he is in Hulk’s room and he can speak coherent sentences due to being stuck as the Hulk for almost two years. He and the big green giant team up with Valkyrie and succeed in escaping the planet. The trio heads to As84 ShopInRI 84 ShopInRI

gard to fight Hela, who has been molding the realm into her own, killing all the guards, reviving her dead army as well as her wolf Fenrir, and appointing Skurge as her Executioner to take control of Asgard. The trio eventually makes it to Asgard, ready to destroy Hela once and for all.

Overall, my thoughts on the movie are varied. First, it’s one of the best Marvel movies so far, with hilarious jokes, and the sibling relationship between Thor and Loki is amazing. The bonding and emotional sense of the movie is extremely captivating, Hela has been one of the greatest villains so far, and I can’t wait to see if she returns for Infinity War. However, the movie felt a bit rushed to me, although it was two hours long. Nonetheless, it is a great set up for Infinity War, and I cannot wait to see what will happen next. I give Thor: Ragnarok a 6 out of 6 diamonds.

Dare to Dream Ranch Inc. is a 501c3 non profit that offers alternative therapy programs for service members, and veterans and their families (SMVF) with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, military sexual trauma (MST), and mild traumatic brain injury.

Dare to Dream Ranch is located in rural Foster, RI on an 11 acre farm set deep in the middle of the woods to allow for a peaceful experience. They offer equine therapy, fly tying / fishing, gardening, nutritional cooking, woodworking, resume writing, career coaching, and more for FREE to their clients.

Karen Dalton dared to dream. She is the daughter of a US Marine who struggled with anger management issues, which affected her life and the lives of her children, and as a result caused her to make a goal to break that cycle.

Karen dreamed up this non profit back in 2014, while attending the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a certified health coach. She had already been working as the executive director of the Rhode Island Academy of Family Physicians and a health and life coach with Transitions Lifestyle by Market America.

She wanted to take her passions and talents to help our service members, veterans, and their families. In April 2015, she held her first fundraiser, in April 2016, 92 ShopInRI

2017 Dare to Dream Ranch provided 100 equine facilitated coaching sessions for service members, veterans and their families for FREE. (Valued at $125 each.) a fly tying/fishing workshop, a few woodworking workshops, a nutritional cooking class (which will be monthly starting in 2018), helped with resume writing, career coaching, communication training, pro-bono attorney coordination, supervised visitation and gardening.

Ms. Dalton was on Congressman Cicilline’s Veteran Suicide Task Force, Providence VA Community Partners Task Force, RI Suicide Prevention Coalition, Exhibitor for pre and post deployment Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program events for both the Air and Army National Guard.

Tasks Completed With the help of Rolling Thunder, we cleared ¼ acre of woods to put in an organic garden; with the help of Embrace Home Loans, we put in our botanical garden; with the help of Blue Cross Blue Shield, we stained the outside of our barn, painted a flag on it and cleared another ¼ acre for pasture for the horses; with the help of Swarovski, we stained the inside of our barn and reset the footing of our stalls; and with the help of US Family Health, we purchased event tents to host up to 200 people for events on the Ranch.

Future Tasks Our future tasks are to build a woodworking workshop, expand the house to include clinic area, library, and function room for yellow ribbons, build an indoor riding arena with attached barn and living quarters for a veteran to live for FREE as our caregiver.

We cannot do this alone. It takes a village. Will you be a part of our village? Volunteer, donate, support our events, get involved.

After two years of tirelessly fundraising, Dare to Dream Ranch is starting a Gift Shoppe and clothing line to fund this non profit.

The goal is to make this a state of art wellness facility for our service members, and veterans and their families that are struggling with PTSD, anxiety, depression, military sexual trauma, anger management issues, communication issues, relationship issues and loss of purpose.

Chris was at his cousin’s house and she had suggested a house of interest for him to investigate, a house that was potentially haunted.

He then proceeded to describe the whole layout of the house to her and had never been there in his life. Naturally, this shocked everyone.

Eventually, he could enter a building, and tell you what spirits were still there lingering amongst the living. He knew names and if they were a mother, father, a child, etc.

When you have these abilities, you try to use them to help people.

There are always going to be skeptics, and that’s fine. Chris’s attitude towards it is, “take it or

leave it”. He explained, “I’m either going to give you a message that you like, or you’re going to sit there and try to test me; if that’s the case, you weren’t open to it in the first place.” People come to Chris for answers, to make their life better, and to maybe get some direction. He believes that a psychic cannot be a medium but a medium can be a psychic. “I’m more, ‘Let me talk to the spirit you want to communicate with and get you a message or be able to tell you you’re heading down a wrong road’.” Many people will ask, “When they were passing away, did they hear what I said to them?” Chris is always happy to get them an answer with validation. It eases their mind and gives them closure. Another question that people come to him with is, “was it intentional” or “was it suicide?” Although it doesn’t change the unfortunate circumstance that is their passing, it puts the family at ease knowing in some cases that it was indeed an accident and not intentional.

How he decided to utilize his gift the most, was to focus on mediumship and house cleansings. Evil has to be invited in and it can enter a home through the use of Ouija boards, Satanism, and other dark magic. Things can escalate and it can become very dangerous for people.

There is no documented evidence that an evil spirit has ever killed someone. There is, however, evidence that evil can act against someone’s personality and can break up families, marriages, and can even cause a person to turn violent against themselves or others.

It’s important to know what you’re dealing with.

Over time, a Catholic priest removing evil from a home has become a stereotype. Every person and every culture has their own belief system. One thing that is consistent through it all, is that Good always wins over Evil. Although Chris was raised Catholic, he chooses to believe in a higher power, and that can be interpreted in many ways.

Maybe the spirit will validate their presence with the smell of their perfume, or by showing Chris something very specific. When a person crosses over, their spirit remains the same as it was when they were alive. So, if they were talkative, you’ll get a lot out of them. The longest he has ever communicated with the same spirit was a little over two hours; some burn out their energy within 15 minutes. They will validate their unquestionable presence with something.

One of Chris’s favorite readings was for a woman whose grandmother had passed away. Her grandmother had given her a tiny train trinket that she had somehow misplaced. She searched and searched and still couldn’t find it anywhere. She was about to give up when Chris told her that in three days, “you’ll be cleaning and you’ll find it.” She did! She had bumped a small box; it opened and there it was! Another validation was someone who had also lost their grandmother and her spirit validated her presence with showing him the purple nightgown with ducks on it that she used to wear. When he revealed that information, the woman he was reading broke down in tears. “You can see how the people feel when they receive proof that their loved one is still around watching, listening and paying attention.” Pets have even come through in readings to communicate and comfort their owners; letting them know they are happy, playing and still around.

“Once you leave this earth, you are never truly gone.”

He is surrounded by this 24/7 and had to learn how to quiet it when it’s an inopportune time. Sometimes, he’s at a store and he can hear a spirit trying to get his attention. He had to learn how to meditate and be able to clear and control his mind. During a reading,

“If you can give one person just one message that makes them smile, you did your job,” Chris shares.

Bobby Kennedy: A Raging Spirit

and admired by both groups. With these two photos, you see it; poor, urban dark hands reaching towards him in life and poor, rural pale hands saluting him in death.

As a young Irish Catholic coming of age in early 1960s Pennsylvania, Matthews was perhaps fated to idolize the young, Irish Catholic President John F. Kennedy.

Christopher Matthews/Tony Powell Barrington Books Two’s genteel Garden City shop is far too cozy for large crowds, so an empty storefront down the mall was pressed into service for a lecture by MSNBC Hardball show political commentator Christopher Matthews. Attendees numbering in the hundreds began applauding as Matthews entered and nonchalantly strolled down the main aisle. Many gave him a preemptive standing ovation. It felt like a beloved Congressman’s Town Hall meeting from the days before in-yourface protest theatre marred such events.

Well known for impatient, staccato interrogation on his liberal-leaning show, Matthews is far more cheerful and softspoken in person - but no less opinionated. He discussed his new book about Robert Kennedy, which he views as a window into a time when Americans of all races at the bottom of the economic ladder could unite behind one candidate and party.

A labor of love, Matthews told us how he wanted the book itself to be really “nice”, so he had the publisher print photos in the front and back end pages, use “manila” colored paper (“I just think it looks better”) with deckle-cut edges, and had the cover printed matte, not glossy, so it “feels nice when you run your hand over it.”

He also arranged for the cover to show Bobby campaigning for President amongst black voters in Watts, and the back cover showing an obviously poor, rural white family, all saluting Kennedy’s funeral train as it passes. Mathews wanted the two covers to show that contrast, how the politician known as RFK reached across the divide and was trusted

found himself enchanted with the young politician affectionately called “JFK”.

Kennedy filled the oval office with movie-star glamour and Mathews’ heart with his elegant calls to idealism. When an emotionally disturbed loner assassinated him in 1963, the nation and world was crushed in grief.

Five years later the intense, hawk-faced Bobby Kennedy caught Matthews’ imagination when he began to pick up where his brother had left off.

Shattered by Jack’s murder, Robert had won a U.S. senate seat from New York in 1964 and began crusading for the dispossessed. Now in 1968 he was running for President to create economic opportunity for the working poor of all races as well as seeking a palatable end to the bloody jungle war in Vietnam – a war he and his brother had started five years earlier. The violent conflict on the other side of the planet and its draft both angered and scared Matthews’ generation. In lieu of service in Vietnam, Matthews spent a two year term in the Peace Corps, President Kennedy’s signature aide program for the third world. Matthews went to Swaziland, a newly created country in Africa. Right before he departed, another disturbed loner assassinated Robert Kennedy on the campaign trail, on the night of the California primary victory which assured Kennedy a real chance at his party’s nomination. Only weeks before, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. had himself been shot to death.

“It wasn’t a bad time to be away,” Matthews said ruefully.

Returning in 1970, he headed to Capitol Hill in search of new heroes, hoping to become a presidential speechwriter and policy aide like John Kennedy’s eloquent Theodore Sorenson.

Under the Capitol dome, Matthews started as a Capitol Hill policeman (“So

you wouldn’t hurt anyone they only gave you five bullets,” he laughed). He soon began to steadily work his way up the Democratic legislative staff ladder.

Less than a decade later he achieved his dream of being a Presidential speechwriter. But liberal heroes proved harder to find in the 70s; grim, stodgy Baptist Jimmy Carter was a far cry from the glittering, freewheeling Kennedys.

After Carter’s defeat by Ronald Reagan, Matthews was unexpectedly recruited by House Speaker Tip O’Neill to become one of his top aides in battling Reagan’s conservative agenda.

Despite the hard, gritty political jockeying between the polar opposite leaders, Matthews developed a deep affection and admiration for both O’Neill and Reagan.

After O’Neill retired in 1987, Matthews transitioned into journalism as the Washington, D.C. bureau chief for the San Francisco Examiner. He also wrote his first book, Hardball: How Politics Is Played, Told by One Who Knows the Game a breezy, wry primer on techniques politicians used (and still use) to recruit allies, deal with enemies, and get ahead.

Ten years later, in 1997, Mathews entered television and has been a nightly presence ever since.

In recent years Mathews has written thoughtful, personality-driven examinations of about the political giants he’s seen up close, and heroes from his early adulthood. One book studied the intriguing relationship between Richard Nixon and John Kennedy and another studied the tension, antipathy, respect and, yes, affection between Reagan and O’Neill.

His has character studies of both Kennedy brothers have been heralded: 2011’s “Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero” spent twelve weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and “Bobby Kennedy: A Raging Spirit” reached the number two slot a week after his R.I. appearance Matthews gave a very brief talk, then took questions. Almost all queries concerned the current era’s political turmoil. Predictably, Matthews is no Trump fan but, despite his liberal reputation, he’s not much a fan of the current Democratic Party leadership either.

The author posits that Bobby Kennedy was the last politician trusted by both blue-collar whites and African Americans and Latinos. He said these blue-collar white Democrats evolved into Trump voters, people who are disillusioned with their economic plight and know today’s political leaders on both sides look down on them.

On that last note, he cited Barack Obama’s famous 2012 quote about working class, rural conservatives who “cling to their guns and religion,” (“Cling to their guns?” he snorted derisively) and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney being surreptitiously recorded opining, infamously, that the lower “47%” want to live off government handouts rather than take responsibility for their lives. Both comments about these people were made, Matthews pointed out, “behind their backs” – said while addressing rich donors in off-the-record fundraisers.

If Democrats want to win electorally, they must to learn to respect this group once again, he says. That requires leaders who, like Robert Kennedy, can reach out to the liberal base and Trump voters, drawing people under hardship together, towards real goals and getting things done. Mathews believes today’s Democratic Party leaders aren’t even close to understanding this.

“They think it’s like a see-saw – if Trump goes down, they go up.

It doesn’t work like that.”

Matthews sees our current polarization springing from elected leaders not acting as leaders; they instead follow, catering to people’s prejudices and demagoging voters’ biases.

Quoting historian Arthur M. Schlesinger that politics is “a learning profession,” Matthews relates that Bobby and Jack Kennedy grew through their careers; you saw evolution in their opinions, skills, and approach to problems. In contrast, he says there is no growth in today’s political leaders.

“You look at the staff-written statements from Nancy Pelosi ten years ago, and today and there’s no difference, no growth – it’s all just the same slop.” (The former presidential speechwriter and author knows “slop” staff-writing when he sees it.)

He also said President Trump’s statements about North Korea do not show any growth from those made before he ascended to the presidency, after he’s had access to much more information from which to draw a deeper, nuanced view.

One audience question referred to New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman’s theory that both parties are failing to adapt to a new polarity that cuts across the old grain of “Liberal-Conservative” and the idea they could be usurped in 2020’s presidential race by someone who will.

Matthews agreed. He expects much more tumult if leaders of both parties don’t start growing and meeting the challenges today’s changes bring. Right now, both parties are failing to revise

their tiresome strategies at all, and if they continue “we’re going to see Mitch go, and Ryan go, and Chuck go,” ticking off the nation’s current national legislative leaders. He strongly hinted he believes the next president may not be from either of the two major parties at all. He also revealed that former Vice President Joe Biden is running for president in 2020.

Someone asked him what was the most interesting thing you found out about Robert Kennedy that did not make it to the book? He thought a moment, then said that towards the end of his life, Bobby concluded that the Warren Commission was correct, that Lee Harvey Oswald was his brother’s true assassin and there was no evidence of a conspiracy, just evidence of a sick loner looking to make himself famous through murder.

Afterwards Matthews went back to the store and signed hundreds of books in a little area off to the side of the entrance. A long thick line snaked from far down the mall sidewalk in and around the store’s book shelves.

“Bobby Kennedy: A Raging Spirit” is well written, a breezy and thoughtful interpretive summary of Robert Kennedy’s life, and his development as a leader. It’s a good introduction for young Americans to RFK and his times from preWWII through the tumultuous 1960s, and, filled with a lot of nuggets from new, original research, it will delight practiced Kennedy fans.

And while any material from many who have related personal experiences of bullying and cruelty from the younger Bob Kennedy is ignored, Mathews has his own insights about how family birth order and Irish Catholic tribalism from the mid-19th through the mid-20th America informed the growth of an abrasive, aggressive moralizer becoming a thoughtful, complex man coming into his own by fitful and surprising ways.

Mathews also examines the relationship of brothers Bobby and Jack that helps explain what has made them intriguing and inspiring figures for so many people even half a century after their tragic deaths.

The other method of harvesting grafts is called the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), where grafts are removed individually after being removed with a tiny punch.

Nothing is different between the two methods as far as the recipient area (where the grafts are being planted) goes. The area to be transplanted is marked, numbed, and then the surgeon will make many hundreds of tiny incisions into which the grafts are placed.
