10 Safety Tips for All Travelers

1. Do your research before you travel. First rule of safe travel — don’t be ignorant about where you are going. Make an effort to learn about the country, the political situation, the cultural norms, the safest spots for travellers, safe accommodations to stay and the areas or regions that are best avoided. Head off on your trip with your eyes wide open to avoid surprises.

2. Blend in with your surroundings. Once you’ve done your research, you canstart your visit to a new destination as if you were one of the locals. This is not only sound exploration advice, but a good safety tip as well. You’ll make yourself more vulnerable to con artists if you stick out like a sore thumb with your massive backpack, two cameras and confused look on your face. and you will draw much less attention if you make an effort to blend in. You also don’t want to disrespect or offend with improper dress or manners.

3. Don’t flash your wealth. Whether this is with cash or expensive gear, showing wealth will only make you more appealing to scammers and pickpockets. By: Jenn Lombari Ethan Plante is an exercise physiologist. Exercise physiologists, put simply, help people become their best physical selves. He’s the guy you want to work with if you’re an athlete or just a regular person who moves, and lifts, and bends. He’s not a physical therapist; he’s the guy you see after physical therapy. Plante is an educator, and he wants to teach you why your body will or won’t do what it used to and he wants to get you back to that level of mobility. He even invented a product to assist you in your journey.

The P-Knot!

Having graduated from Bridgewater State in 2007, he was working with a degree in exercise physiology. His clients were ranging from young athletes, senior citizens, special populations, and the general public. After physical therapy and surgeries didn’t help, or they did and the pain came back, people would come to him and he would learn what their imbalances were and figuring out why they were in pain.

Sometimes wrist pain had nothing to do with the wrist, but it was something in the shoulder. So it wasn’t necessarily what the pain was, it was what was causing it. Using foam rollers, Plante would assist the clients with tissue work and soon, he had clients coming back saying it didn’t hurt anymore.

Insurance wouldn’t cover exercise physiology so it was hard for some people to keep coming back. A patient had to be referred by a doctor or physical therapist. Going back to school for a degree in physical therapy wasn’t in the cards so he continued to make “tools” that helped people. It was clear that people were benefiting from self-tissue work, but the general public really had no idea how useful it could be. Olympic athletes last so long because they are constantly getting deep tissue work.

Self-tissue work has an importance and you can do it to yourself. Plante was working to create a catalyst for an education movement. He partnered up with a mechanical engineer for a short time who created the process for him to move forward. In 2012 he got his idea prototyped at a local foam company in Providence. Through trial and error and several prototypes, The P-Knot was developed. This was meant to be an education company, not a product company.

Plante is now able to produce the product himself. He has been given opportunities to work with the Boston and Providence Bruins, Kevan Miller, US figure skaters, and Tom Brady and his company, TB12 just to name a few. His real 10 ShopInRI

People who are in great shape and consider themselves athletes get hurt often because they’re only working the parts of their body pertaining to their sport. They’re working the same parts of the body all the time and not concentrating on the muscle groups and tissue that support other parts of their physique. He explained that it’s as easy as “making the workout make sense”. Tissue work unlocks the range of motion.

For example, hockey players’ mobility is limited because they’re always in skates. The P-Knot conditions the whole body. A kid who is playing softball might go to a pitching clinic. But that’s not working the whole body. People who get to the Olympics are playing a wide range of sports by the time they are 18. That allows a wide range of motion, using the whole body. “Movements we made as little kids, like deadlifting a ball, happen less and less as we get older and now, people bend over to lift something and they hurt themselves.” Explained Plante. “I’m teaching people how to move again. When you are balanced and moving properly, you can continue to move without getting sprains and strains. Learning a skill set within a sport is okay. I worked with a tennis player and when I got him off the court and into the weight

room, he unlocked even more potential and was able to move on past the people he had been competing against.

His body was conditioned to do more.”

The P-Knot is for PAIN, POSTURE, and PERFORMANCE. But it’s not just for athletes. Performance for some could be getting in the car or tying their shoes.

At the time I interviewed Plante, he wanted me to use the P-Knot for a quick demonstration. He had me sit with my back against the wall for a shoulder flexion test. I brought each hand up the wall behind me one at a time, crawling like a spider. He marked how far I could reach. Then for less than five minutes, I did a few exercises with the P-Knot. I went back to the wall and sat again, allowing each hand to crawl up the wall to see how far I could reach. After those simple exercises, 4 inches had been added to how far I could reach. Doing this every day will be life changing!

Everyone has a story to tell, and Miles Vinciguerra is no exception. His path to where he is today took many curves and hairpin turns until one event stopped him dead in its tracks. What he did to address those issues made him understand the value of life and what people can offer.

He truly believes that what makes him stronger is his will to learn, admit to his mistakes and what he did to not only tackle the problems head-on, but to also show others—particularly younger, impressionable clients—that there are better alternatives to meeting their goals in life.

Vinciguerra has clients throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island, who work with him either by telephone, video conference, or face-to-face. He notices how his clients transition into the workforce and adulthood, and how coaching helps them discover the next phase of their lives.

He’s realized that coaching also aids clients in overcoming issues ranging from anxiety, depression and worrying, while helping them to grow and develop their mindset and selfconfidence.

“I wasn’t a very good student in high school, and getting into trouble while I was there didn’t help matters any,” he said. “There wasn’t a lot of structure to my day or subjects that I was interested in pursuing. It was a detriment being there because there was little I could see myself gaining from being in a classroom.”

After he graduated from high school, Vinciguerra went to work as a landscaper. He founded Miles of LandCare, Inc., in 2012. His foray into the business world started slow, gradually building through “word-of-mouth” advertising, his attention to detail, outstanding customer service, and taking the time to learn about each customer as if they were members of an extended family.

Because of those core values, Vinciguerra’s business grew to more than 100 clients. He lived the life he wanted—at least that was what he thought—until a decision completely changed his direction and career path.

“I was working some crazy hours back then, maybe 1618 hour days, seven days a week,” Vinciguerra recalled.

“There wasn’t a suitable outlet for me to just let loose or even wind down. I could not let my customers down;

they depended on me to make their properties look great. To ensure that I could adequately service them, I made some bad choices to keep myself going. That ‘plan’ worked well initially.

I addressed everyone’s needs and there were no complaints from my customers or the people who depended on me.”

“My decision eventually caught up with me, however,” he stated. “I was coming home after another long day of work, fell asleep at the wheel, and hit a tree. Nobody was injured, but my truck was severely damaged. I had to look in the mirror to see who I was and what I wanted to do. I learned the hard way that my direction in life took me down a destructive path. I came to the understanding that if I didn’t change my habits, my situation could become much, much worse.”

After the accident, Vinciguerra attended a coaching school and because of what he learned there, he decided to open his own coaching school in August 2018 to help young adults overcome their personal issues, and to inspire others to make good conscious decisions. That same month, Vinciguerra formed “Coach Miles V” as an outlet for young adults to talk about their own situation in a non-judgmental forum. “It was a way for people to open up about their hopes, dreams, struggles, and fears with someone who had been down that dark road,” he said.

Since his company formed, he seeks to speak at area

schools to inspire and motivate others with his story.

Will Rhode Island Legalize Recreational Marijuana?

Somewhere between 1911 and 1914, Massachusetts became the first state to criminalize marijuana on a state level, prohibiting the sale of “Indian hemp” without a prescription.

About a century later, the tables turned, as Massachusetts changed course and moved forward with its legalization of recreational use marijuana.

All the way back to 2008, Massachusetts’ voters first elected to support the possession of small amounts of marijuana after one of the first of several ballot initiatives. The Massachusetts Sensible Marijuana Policy Initiative made the possession of less than one ounce of marijuana punishable by a fine of $100 without the possessor being reported to the state’s criminal history board. Massachusetts then became the eighteenth state to legalize medical marijuana when voters passed another ballot in 2012. The federal government, however, still listed marijuana as a Schedule 1 controlled substance with no medical value, so there was still much to do before the initiative would finally take effect, including making specific rules, issuing business licenses, and finding growers. As of 2013, the medical marijuana statute finally went into effect. As of December 15, 2016, recreational marijuana was legalized (the second Northeastern state to do so, following Maine) following a November 8, 2016 voter ballot initiative. The state’s recreational use market officially began sales on November 20, 2018.

Massachusetts is home to well over 6 million people, and is geographically situated that instantly makes it a potential marijuana industry leader. There are dozens of other regulations and laws relating to details surrounding Massachusetts’ marijuana use, which can be found on the Internet, including the power of Massachusetts’ towns and cities to limit and/or ban marijuana sales.

Although medical and recreational cannabis are both legal in Massachusetts, it is still illegal to use it in public. This includes public transportation, parks, schools, sidewalks, and more -- so as a rule of thumb, discretion is key. At this point in time, legal cannabis consumption is limited to private residences only. There have been discussions on whether or not the state will allow cannabis social lounges in the future, but lawmakers have decided to hold off for the time being.

Bills to legalize recreational use marijuana have been introduced in the Rhode Island General Assembly every year since 2011, but have to date been “held for further study” with no action.

Will Rhode Island follow suit and legalize recreational marijuana use?

In 2006, RI was the eleventh state to legalize medical marijuana, and those with a physician’s support, became eligible to obtain an identification card to present at local dispensaries for the purpose of purchasing marijuana for medical reasons.

As of November 20, 2018, recreational dispensaries were open to the public. Adults 21 years of age or older with a valid, government-issued ID can now purchase up to one ounce of marijuana or 5 grams of concentrate.

When Rhode Island lawmakers return to session in January 2019, after many years of hearings and studies on legalizing marijuana for recreational use, they will be facing a vote for the first time, head on. As is typical with any issue of this magnitude, there are groups, statewide agencies, and legislators who oppose the legalization of marijuana, and others who strongly advocate for it.

Governor Gina Raimondo has vocalized some support and has said that she remains open to legalization, as long as steps are taken to keep the drug away from children.

House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello has concerns related to public safety, regardless of the money it would raise, but also has stated, “We will have to determine what the net impact would be for Rhode Island in light of the legal sales in Massachusetts and other states.”

With all of its research, studies, and legislative changes to ensure effective and safety regulations for implementing and administering laws related to the lawful use of marijuana, Massachusetts has laid the groundwork and possibly the best model for RI and many other states to follow suit. With this being said, RI’s leaders will likely be paying very close attention to our neighboring state to determine the new law’s overall impact. RI very well could be next.

Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio’s concerns are related to workforce issues, enforcement around [marijuana] edibles, and impact on children. He states, “I will look to the experience in Massachusetts as legalization is implemented there, and proceed very cautiously as we continue to have this important public discussion.”

Scott Slater, a Democratic state representative from Providence who has seen his marijuana legalization legislation stall every year stated,“With the reality of it being all around us, I think folks have to look at it a little harder now.”

As stated by Matthew Schweich, Deputy Director of the national pro-legalization group Marijuana Project, “The landscape is shifting around Rhode Island. Regardless of what the General Assembly does, Rhode Island adults will be buying legal marijuana from Massachusetts stores and, perhaps Connecticut, very soon.” He goes on to state that RI most certainly has its problems related to drug use and abuse, however, if recreational marijuana is legalized, the proceeds from the taxes for its purchase could finance the creation of programs to address the drug abuse problems.

There are going to be a lot of people making diet and fitness resolutions, but as I’ve said in the past, the key is sticking with those resolutions all throughout the year. If you fall back?

Get back up and keep going. Don’t let setbacks stop you from reaching your goals.

The key to sticking to your resolutions is to set specific and realistic goals. For weight loss, 1-2 pounds per week is healthy and realistic. Some weeks you may see more weight loss and some weeks you may see less, but that doesn’t mean that progress isn’t happening.

How you feel is the most important indicator that your plan is working. Don’t get frustrated when it doesn’t happen quickly; weight loss is a slow and steady process that is meant to be for the long haul. Fad diets and quick weight loss schemes are only temporary and it’s important to remind yourself of that. The same goes for any other fitness goals you have. If you just want to build your strength, set goals to do more pushups or maybe do some pull ups if you can. I like to give my clients a fitness test every few weeks so they can gauge how much they are improving. At the end of this article, I’ll give you an example fitness test; you can change it to suit your preferences.

Diet and fitness resolutions are great, but remember that it’s not just diet and exercise that will help your goals to be met. Things like stretching and managing stress are also very important. Managing stress sets us up with bet-

ter mental clarity to stay on track. Set a goal to meditate for 10-20 minutes a day. Make stretching a part of your workout routine to avoid injuries and get better results.

Take the time to sit down and write down your resolutions and really think about it. Giving Back to Veterans

Since 1983, The Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island (BIARI) has provided those who have suffered brain injuries, information, guidance, support, and access to care, to enable them to have a better quality of life.

The organization is comprised of healthcare professionals, physicians, providers of brain injury rehabilitation, and other advocates and supports, to both brain injury survivors and their caregivers. BIARI is the foremost RI organization that educates those who are suddenly faced with both immediate and longterm effects of a traumatic brain injury (TBI), as well as expanding and enhancing the services of providers of brain injury care.

BIARI also actively organizes programs to help veterans who have suffered a brain injury as a result of service deployment.

They have a full range of information and a resource center to help returning vets who are facing challenges as a consequence of their deployment, and BIARI wants to get the word out!

Two programs under BIARI’s umbrella are “Vets GolfStrong” and “HeadStrong Group.”

Vets GolfStrong is led by Lisa Tamburini, owner of Tamburini Golf Performance Training and HeadStrong Group is supported

by Mike Harbour, owner of Mike Harbour Golf. These two businesses welcome any veteran who has suffered a brain injury to participate in their programs.

GolfStrong is a 20 week program sponsored by CVS and CVS Charity Classic, and will be held at the Alpine Country Club in Cranston from June through September.

participants. Each session is approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours and focuses on golf mobility and golf mechanics. For vets who do not own golf clubs, Tamburini has that covered. She reached out to Mike Kenney, manager of Golfer’s Warehouse in Cranston, who loved the idea, and will donate golf clubs, as needed.

This program offers a unique change of pace and scenery for these vets! No vet is turned away and any vet who wants to learn the game of golf or improve their game is welcome!

One of the most important messages Tamburini wants people to understand is that many vets who have been deployed overseas have suffered some type of injury which can affect the brain in various ways.

While all may have not suffered a TBI, they may be experiencing anxiety, depression or PTSD, all of which can have a negative impact on their lives. The BIARI programs are meant to address all of the problems associated with the impact of any brain injuries.

One of the latest programs of the Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island, first launched in November of 2018, is HeadStrong Group, led by Veterans Program Manager Jeremy Tolleson, a former army medic with a background in occupational therapy, social work and veterans’ advocacy. It is designed to connect veterans and caregivers of veterans with brain injuries and PTSD through social engagement, recreational activities, and peer to peer mentorship. HeadStrong Group is sponsored by Veterans Assembled electronics (VAe) of Providence, who have partnered with BIARI to address the growing needs of returning veterans and their caregivers. HeadStrong Group meets monthly and will offer a wide range of activities. From football game nights, bowling, themed movie nights, and coffee socials, to ski trips and equine therapy, there are numerous entertaining events planned! Like many of Tamburini’s clients say, “Any vet who has been deployed overseas has suffered some sort of brain injury. It is not easy for them to just walk back into society and everyday life.” That’s why programs like HeadStrong Group and Vets GolfStrong are so important.

The Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island is the only nonprofit organization in Rhode Island dedicated exclusively to helping those with a brain injury. After suffering a TBI back in 2007, BIARI was instrumental in helping me through my traumatic experience.

After recovering, I realized the importance of this organization for those with TBIs and their caregivers.

I believe it is important to let veterans know about the valuable services this agency offers.

Q: Can I pay for life insurance with one premium rather than making monthly payments?

A: Yes! These policies are often referred to as single premium whole life policies and are designed to consider any fees and life mortality rates in determining the premium amount. Based on these factors, you would pay a one-time lump sum into the policy upon acceptance and receive a death benefit for life. The younger you are, the lower the initial payment needed to receive a higher death benefit.

Q: I have an old life insurance policy and the company has informed me that it is going to lapse in the next year or so. What can I do?

A: Your options depend on the type of policy you hold. However, I will assume that it is either a term policy or a universal life policy. If it is a term policy, then it is normal for the policy to expire because term policies are designed to last only for a specific period.

If it is a universal life policy, then it is a bit more complicated. The most likely reason why the policy is going to lapse is that it may have been underfunded for years, meaning not enough premiums were paid into the policy. If this is the case, you may be able to increase the premiums to help keep the policy in force longer, as well as other options. Contacting the company or a licensed agent is the best thing to do … but do it soon.

WHAT ARE YOU, A COMEDIAN?

David DiLorenzo of Goomba Comedy Company has a knack for making people laugh.

From a very young age, David DiLorenzo of Johnston has been a cut-up. It does not matter the date, place, time or especially the venue, he always has a joke or a story to tell. Because of that, DiLorenzo knew early on that comedy was not only in his blood, but it was also his calling.

DiLorenzo said he enrolled in a chorus there. He noted his mother was a great singer and admitted that he didn’t even know that he could sing.

He remembers doing routines in the fourth grade when he attended the Johnston school system.

That made him popular with fellow students, but it also made him a target of the teachers and administrators. When the school decided to keep him back another year, he joked that it actually gave him a new audience, but added “it was the dumbest thing I ever heard at the time.”

He entered a talent show where he said Italian television consisted of two stations; one run by the former Soviet Union and the other by the Vatican. DiLorenzo said he did impressions based on celebrities that appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” He received a lot of positive feedback from that event and understood where his career track would take him.

“It was like the administrators were giving me a second show, “ said DiLorenzo, who acknowledges George Carlin, Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Cosby as his major influences. “I was certainly the class clown at school. It’s what appealed to me.”

It would be another decade when one of his influences would come and shine a light on DiLorenzo and clear a path for him.

He cited traveling to Italy as an exchange student during junior high school that changed his life. During his nearly year-long stay overseas, 46 46ShopInRI ShopInRI

At the age of 14, DiLorenzo could not have known at that time how his life would ultimately change.

He attended the Rodney Dangerfield show at the Ocean State Theater (now called the Providence Performing Arts Center, or PPAC) on June 4, 1982.

What happened next could be described as someone taking advantage of a situation.

“Before (Dangerfield) closed his set, I yelled up to him that I could do an impression of him,” DiLorenzo said. “Rodney said for me to come up on stage and prove it to him. I got up on the stage, and did my impression of him standing just a few feet away. He said he was happy with my impression of him and thought of the idea of ‘dueling Rodneys’ would be a funny bit.”

The idea of opening his own comedy company intrigued him since there were few venues for people in his field to ply their trade. Since the Comedy Connection in East Providence had been closed for some time, the thought of having a stable of comedians would be the way to go. That was the foundation on the Goomba Comedy Company. DiLorenzo said there is no rhyme or reason for the name, it just came to him.

He currently tours the region appearing at banquets, parties, special events and functions. DiLorenzo said he gets a kick out of seeing people laugh and trying to come at him with their jokes.

One aspect of his work that roils him is the stealing of material by other comedians. DiLorenzo said many comedians are known to rip-off other jokesters material for their own gain. He figured out a way to combat that issue.

“I make the comedy relatable to myself,” he said. “I can tell an overweight joke such as, ‘You know you have to lose weight when this happens, I was outside the other day, a bright sunny day. I turned to my left, and My Shadow knocked over a five-year-old,’ that might not work so much with a skinny person. Things that happen in my life that are personal to me are the things I talk about in my act.”

Speaking of singing, DiLorenzo was invited to sing the Canadian and American National Anthems at Fenway Park in Boston before the Boston Red Sox versus the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball game. He didn’t know he could do it until he got up there, and it was all business when he approached home plate.

“Well”come to 2019 Tips to Manage Your Health and Wellness Another year has passed and most of us celebrated the holidays with family and friends by indulging in what is typically the center of all gatheringsfood and spirits. For some, the holiday season is a good excuse to overindulge.

The consequences are inevitable-extra pounds that cause our bellies to bulge and our pants to be snug. It’s human nature to overeat and drink merrily at functions where there is an outrageous assortment of goodies, so it’s unlikely that’s going to change. But now that our heads have stopped spinning from all of the holiday cheer, it’s time to get back on the health and wellness track.

It’s common sense that what you put into your body will result in how you feel overall. If you have a hard time with eating in moderation throughout the year, maybe it’s time to see a nutritionist who can provide guidance about your diet and tips to help you shed some weight.

Depending on your own personal circumstances, it may or may not be feasible to join a gym, but getting a friend to join you may make all of the difference. Taking some time for yourself to become fit will inevitably be a benefit to both your physical and mental health. to be accountable, and as a result, successful, in your quest to be healthy.

If you are not used to focusing on your health and well being, it may be a challenge to figure out where to begin.

For those with chronic conditions (conditions that are ongoing and require continuous care), medical guidance is a must. To determine the state of your health, you must first visit with a medical provider for a complete physical. This will be the baseline that you can use to make changes to benefit your health. For example, if you have high blood pressure, the only way to determine if medication is necessary to control it, a doctor must perform tests.

By avoiding the medical community, or

procrastinating because you are “just too busy,” it is inevitable that an undetected condition you may have will eventually worsen and become harder to control. We are all aware of how we are feeling and it’s imperative that we address any concerns we have about changes we notice when it comes to our health. Putting it off because of fear of what may be, or ignoring newly arisen symptoms that cannot be explained, will only be detrimental to us; and oftentimes, what we are feeling with our health is the result of something minor, and is an easy fix.

If you have been diagnosed with any of the numerous chronic conditions,

the following are just a few tips that can help you to make educated choices to benefit your health.

Educate yourself if you have a chronic condition Learning about your condition from your doctor or nurse will help you to know how you can be in control and what to expect-knowledge is power.

Understand your medications Learn about the medications you are prescribed in order to understand exactly what they are for and what they are supposed to do. Pay attention to any potential side effects that may be causing problems and report them to your doctor.

Partner with your medical provider Many people are timid when it’s time to see a doctor. Be prepared with a list of questions and be sure that you understand what you are being told. Most doctors are extremely busy, but remember, you deserve whatever amount of time necessary to get the best possible medical care.

Take responsibility for your care, and don’t leave everything to your doctor One way to do this is to listen to your body and track its changes. If you have hypertension, learn to check your blood pressure. If your heart has rhythm problems, check your pulse. For heart failure, weigh yourself every day and chart your symptoms. This kind of home monitoring lets you spot potentially harmful changes before they bloom into real trouble.

Ask a family member to be your advocate Healthcare can be an overwhelming, confusing topic. Ask a family member to accompany you to your doctor visits to take notes to avoid missing important information.

Taking control of your own health is the most important thing you can do for yourself, but for many, it’s easier to avoid than it is to address. The practice of preventive care can help you to keep chronic conditions at bay, and even detect something that your physician can take care of before it starts. Making positive changes that will enable you to live a longer, healthier life may not be easy for many people. You are the only one who can make the first step toward healthy living. In Rhode Island, there are workshops designed to give you the skills to manage symptoms, medications, and help you to learn to

communicate with family and doctors, relieve stress, eat well, exercise, and set attainable goals.

What needs to be addressed will depend on how one feels not only physically, but even emotionally. Learn to say “NO!” Overwhelming yourself with the responsibilities of others is not healthy.

Take good care of your spirit and don’t allow anyone to take it from you. Make decisions that benefit your own well being. Do not burden yourself with trying to “fix” others.

Take responsibility for your own happiness. No one can make you happy but yourself. If you find it difficult to follow these tips, seek counseling. A therapist can guide you to see what you may not see yourself. If you are not happy, move forward and never look back. Of course, if you are married and have young children, this may be easier said than done. But at least talking about your feelings may help guide you to make positive changes. Baby steps...Don’t expect major changes to happen overnight.

Be aware of your emotional state.

Many people suffer from the debilitating conditions of anxiety and/or depression. These conditions do not only interfere with functioning on a daily basis, they can be a roadblock to your acknowledging potential physical conditions. Let someone (anyone) know if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of these conditions to help you to navigate how/ where to find relief.

OK, WHAT DOES “LIVE THE LIVE” MEAN? By: Al Milukas I had a friend ask me that question the other day.

Seems that some people aren’t sure how to pronounce the name of this blog. I guess it’s time to explain it a little…

First, the pronunciation. It’s \Liv \ the \Liv \ as in “Live for today” or ”Live to a ripe old age.” Both “lives” rhyme with “give.” It is not /līv/ the /līv/ (rhymes with “hive”) or any combination of the two.

Where this name came from is a story that my wife and I disagree on.

Our versions are similar, but not exactly the same.

Here’s my version: I have a good friend named Lee, who is up on every trip we take, every restaurant we go to, every amazing place we see in this world. Having traveled to many countries, we’ve been fortunate to come home with some wonderful stories.

After one such trip, my Lee said to me: “Wow…you guys really know how to live!”

My wife has quirky fun way with words and her response was: “Everybody knows how to live. The secret is to live the live!” Since then, we use the phrase “live the live” to describe anything that would normally be described as “living the life” or “living it up.”

Live the live simply means to live your life to the fullest by whatever means you are able to do so. You can live the live by climbing a mountain, dining at a Michelin-star restaurant, or simply soaking up the sun on a beautiful beach in the Caribbean.

But if none of that is your speed, you could live the live by sitting in front of your TV on a Sunday afternoon, watching football while chowing down on pizza and beer. For me, live the live means traveling for food…sharing experiences with friends…meeting wonderful new people in far away places…and enjoying a few cocktails along the way.

Whatever your definition of live the live is, I hope that you can achieve it more than once in 2019.

Live the live is whatever makes your life special to you.

The benefit of the recent acquisition of Aetna by CVS Health may fall into Rhode Island’s own backyard. The deal is one of the most lucrative business transactions in the United States and will transform the company and its role in America’s healthcare, as CVS’s pharmacy and benefit manager are combined with Aetna’s insurance business. As a result of this new partnership, Rhode Island is now home to the third-largest company in the United States.

Many may not know that CVS, the largest pharmacy chain in the United States, selling more prescriptions and having more stores and health clinics than any other pharmacy, was originally referred to as Consumer Value Stores and started on its road to being the number one company for healthcare innovations all the way back to the late 19th century.

The original idea behind CVS’s ultimate success was formed in 1892 by Frank Melville, a shoe jobber. After the original owner of three pharmacy chains was overcome with debt, he gave up, but as one of his employees, Melville realized he could do something special and took over all three of his employer’s New York stores. Once under Melvilles’s ownership, the growing chain started to show its strength, and in 1909, Melville’s son, John Ward Melville, referred to as Ward, jumped on board and instituted innovative ideas, which pushed the company to thrive. In 1916, Ward was named vice president of CVS and moved the chain forward with significant growth in all areas, and as they say, the rest is history.

The History Of CVS

Frank Melville was originally known for his chain of discount footwear stores called Thom McAn. In 1963, brothers Sid and Stanley Goldstein and Ralph Hoagland founded and opened the first Consumer Value Store (CVS) in Lowell, Massachusetts, as a discount health and beauty 56 ShopInRI 56 ShopInRI

That store became the core of the company and its growth for the next 35 years. The CVS name was first used in 1964, as the founders were then operating a 17-store chain. A key development came in 1968, when pharmacy departments began to be added to the CVS stores, prompting the company’s eventual evolution as a leading drugstore chain and in 1969, Melville took over the CVS operations.

During the late 20th century, Melville made a decision to diversify and took on more than a dozen other retail operations, including familiar ones such as Chess King, Marshalls, Kay-Bee Toys, Linens ‘n Things, Wilson Leather Goods Stores, FootAction, Bob’s Stores, as well as others.

In 1985, Stanley Goldstein was named president of CVS

by Melville, becoming CEO and chairman the following year.

Melville continued amassing retail chains into the mid1990s, when the company then decided to concentrate on its best-performing chain, CVS, and after restructuring, he closed as many as 800 of his retail operation stores in 1992.

In 1994, Thomas M. Ryan, a pharmacist, was named CEO of CVS, which then had more than 1,350 locations. At this time, CVS was by far the largest of Melville’s chains, with 1994 revenues of $4.3 billion, or 38 percent of Melville’s overall revenues of $11.3 billion. During 1994, CVS entered the blossoming market for pharmacy benefit management services by forming PharmaCare Management Services to serve managed care and other organizations.

In 1996, Melville moved the CVS headquarters to Woonsocket, RI; Melville Corporation then changed its name to CVS Corporation. Goldstein continued to serve as chairman and CEO, and Ryan was named vice-chairman and chief operating officer. In early 1998, Ryan was named president and CEO of CVS, with Goldstein remaining chairman.

CVS later merged with the pharmacy benefit management company Caremark Rx in 2007, and was renamed CVS Caremark Corporation. In 2014, the company changed its

name to CVS Health, following its decision to remove tobacco products from all CVS Pharmacy store shelves. CVS resigned from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce after realizing that the chamber and its foreign affiliates were involved in a global lobbying campaign against anti-smoking laws. Their stance against smoking caused CVS to make alliances with healthcare providers and rebrand itself fully as a healthcare company. CVS wanted their future profits to be in health and wellness, as opposed to earning profits from tobacco. While its transformation from drugstore to healthcare company began more than a decade ago, CVS has taken on a new advocacy role, that of a “public enemy” of cigarettes.

The shift toward healthcare first began in 2004, when CVS acquired Eckerd Stores and Eckerd Health Services, allowing CVS to lay the groundwork in administering drug benefits to employees of large corporations and government agencies.

Two years later, CVS acquired MinuteClinic, a pioneering in-store health-clinic chain that was offering treatment for routine illnesses, basic screenings and vaccinations.

CVS also expanded its very profitable specialty pharmacy business, which focuses on expensive drugs to treat complex or rare diseases like cancer or HIV. In 2007, CVS merged with Caremark, making them the country’s leading pharmacy-benefits manager. CVS then struck a deal with the medical-products distributor Cardinal Health to form the country’s largest generic drug sourcing operation. CVS then followed up with the acquisition of Coram, a business that allows CVS to dispatch technicians to patients’ homes to administer pharmaceuticals via needles and catheters.

The acquisitions kept coming. In May of 2015, CVS secured Omnicare, which allows for distribution of prescription drugs to nursing homes and assisted-living operations. CVS then purchased Target’s pharmacy and clinic businesses and left open the possibility of pursuing further deals. Last year, the company changed its name from CVS Caremark to CVS Health.

Today, CVS has more than 9,800 stores, 1,100 medical walk-in clinics, and is a leading pharmacy benefits manager with approximately 93 million plan members, a dedicated senior pharmacy care business serving more than one million patients per year, expanding specialty pharmacy services, and a leading stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. CVS Health also serves an estimated 39 million people through traditional, voluntary and consumer directed health insurance products and related services, including a rapidly expanding Medicare Advantage plan.

In November of 2018, CVS publicized its newly formed Aetna acquisition, which has now established it as the nation’s number one company in healthcare innovations.

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Planning for Retirement

The most important goal for many of my clients is to retire on their terms – which often means planning a long, secure retirement that enables them to check off items on their ultimate bucket list. Retirement requires careful planning in addition to avoiding financial missteps along the way. Here are five common mistakes and strategies to avoid them.

Pushing retirement planning into the future.

Preparing for retirement can be overwhelming, so it’s easy to think, “I’ll tackle it next year.” Simply put, the earlier you start focusing on retirement, the earlier you can prepare a plan that accounts for your goals and concerns. And, focusing on saving today gives your investments the opportunity to snowball in value through the power of compound interest.

Underestimating the cost of health care.

Medical costs are rising, with no clear end in sight.

Your best defense is to figure out what protection and sources of income you could apply toward potential medical expenses. Common vehicles include Medicare and supplemental insurance premiums, long-term care policies, continuing health insurance through an employer and health savings accounts.

If you don’t need the money and want to avoid the resulting tax bill, consider transferring your distribution (up to $100,000) directly from your IRA to a qualified charitable organization. A tax professional can help you determine the strategy that’s right for your situation.

If you’re pondering retirement in the next year or so, here are five tips to help you transition smoothly into retirement.

Know the transition could take weeks Or months.

You likely spent decades forming a routine around your work schedule. Establishing your new normal of volunteer work, an encore career or helping family will take time. Continuing to host family get-togethers? Planning to move or purchase a retirement home? As you share your plans, don’t forget to touch on your financial picture. The benefits of open communication are three-fold: it reassures your kids that you’re financially prepared; allows you to introduce (or remind) your family about your estate and legacy plans; and it establishes a safe space for both sides to discuss potentially challenging money topics.

Maintain healthy habits.

Staying diligent with the activities that help you feel your best is important as you shift into retirement.

Prioritize eating healthy, sleeping well, staying fit and maintaining friendships in your new routine.

Evaluate your finances.

Prior to retirement, you likely outlined how you will manage your cash flow. (If not, today is the day to put a plan in place.) As you enter retirement, review

your expenses to ensure they’re aligned with your plan. It’s common to revise your spending and activities after experiencing the first few weeks away from your primary job, so it’s okay if you need to adjust how much you withdraw from your accounts each month. If you want to increase your spending, calculate what that means for your later retirement years, as you don’t want your savings to come up short. Reset your attitude.

NORTH PROVIDENCE IS

BOOMING!

During the past fifteen years, Rhode Island and its residents have experienced significant social and economic change, and North Providence is working extra hard to move forward with improving its local economy with the addition of numerous new businesses, improvements and enhancements to its schools, and the addition of a state of the art Public Safety Complex.

Public Safety Complex

In January of 2017, the Town of North Providence planning board unanimously approved a preliminary plan for an estimated $30-million two story public-safety complex at 1835 Mineral Spring Avenue and the project is on target for completion in late summer or early fall of 2019.

On April 30, 2018, the North Providence Purchasing Board awarded Ahlborg Corporation the contract for building the North Providence Public Safety Complex in the amount $22,125,000. The contract between the Town of North Providence and Ahlborg was signed on May 10, 2017, and within a week, Ahlborg was on the construction site and performing the layout for the building foundation. The project is being led by Mayor Charles Lombardi, RGB 68 ShopInRI 68 ShopInRI

Architects and J.R. Vinagro, who was hired to complete the foundation excavation process.

RGB is delivering design, as well as extended construction administration services through the Town’s own project management team.

The cost for the facility, which is being built on an 8-acre lot across from North Providence High School is being paid for with funds secured from the Google federal forfeiture case in 2011!

The 52,000 square foot building will house the traffic court and most of police and fire operations, according to the plan prepared by DiPrete Engineering. Additionally, the building will have a basement level for storage and two parking lots, according to the plan.

North Providence Schools Improvement Program Most of the Town of North Providence schools were originally built between the 1930s and 1960s, which has resulted in many current safety and compliance issues. With reports of mold problems, roof deficiencies, schools not operating efficiently, non compliance with current building codes, and ADA non compliance, i.e. mechanical, electrical, plumbing and life safety, and high risk student drop-off and pick-up arrangements, as well as several other issues, it was high time that our children and teachers received what they deserve- a healthy, safe environment to support safe and secure learning-and the school problems are now being addressed and resolved.

With support from Mayor Charles Lombardi, the North Providence School Committee, Facilities Committee, and other town leaders, the schools’ makeovers are becoming a reality.

After passage of a $75 million bond referendum in November 2016, with approval from 77% of the voters, the Town of North Providence established the North Providence Schools Improvement Program that was charged with developing a plan to address long overdue consolidating, rebuilding and upgrading of all Town schools.

Total cost- Total bond cost is $75 Million > R.I. State Contribution: $42.3 Million > Town of North Providence Contribution: $32.7 Million Build two (2) new state-of-the-art elementary schools to replace Stephen Olney and McGuire elementary schools. These will replace three (3) circa 1930 structures that were not meeting requirements.

Mandated health and safety upgrades.

Centredale, Greystone, Whelan, Birchwood, Ricci, and N.P. High School Develop a Capital Reserve Fund to ensure the upkeep and maintenance of all school buildings.

It’s that time of year again when people are making promises to themselves such as,“I’m going to join a gym,” “I’m going to start a diet,” “I’m going to change my life.” For most, this will last for a month, or two at best. It’s not about the time of year or making a goal. It’s about a lifestyle change that we should follow all year long. Once you change your lifestyle, you will realize it’s not about diets or joining the gym, but rather about enjoying everyday because you feel healthy and energized. I cannot express enough that I love what I eat. I do not diet, but, I eat healthy food. I eat what makes me feel good. However; even if you have a bad day with your food choices, that alone is not going to make you gain weight. Just go back to your lifestyle changes the next day.

JUST SAY NO You probably aren’t aware of how much extra food you consume just from people offering it to you. A sample at the market, an extra cookie at a party, a taste while you are baking; it all adds up! Just think twice before you take that food and decide if you really want it. Most of the time, we are already full, but we don’t allow our brain the time to tell our stomach, “you’re full,” if the food is in front of us.

Here are some helpful hints to help you stay on track.

SCHEDULE YOUR EXERCISE At the beginning of the week, schedule your exercise. Schedule your workouts just as you would an appointment. It needs to be a priority. You can make time to exercise. Even if you can’t make it to class or the gym, make time to get some activity in. Your goal for exercise should be at least three days per week.

SHOP SMART FOR YOURSELF It is so important to stock your kitchen with healthy foods. Have healthy snacks handy. The more convenient they are, the more likely you are to eat them. Don’t think about what you shouldn’t eat, instead promise yourself to eat three to five servings of vegetables each day, or to eat more fruit during the month.

DON’T CHECK THE SCALE

There is always a point during a change in diet when you hit what is called the “weight plateau.” This is when you stop losing weight even though you are putting all your effort in and doing everything correctly. But that number on the scale seems to get stuck. It is completely normal for this to happen, but it can be pretty frustrating when you are working so hard. Don’t panic or quit. Here are some great tips to help you overcome the weight loss plateau and to continue getting the results you deserve.

If you notice that your weight is still the same for a couple of weeks, stop getting on the scale. I tell all of my clients to avoid the scale. Judge for yourself by how you feel and how your clothes fit. Ignore the number on the scale!

CHECK THE NUTRITIONAL TABLE FOR HIDDEN SUGARS! When you are trying to maintain or lose weight, it is very important that you don’t buy what seems to be healthy by what is written on the package. What you see that describes the food comes just from marketing the food as being healthy so that you buy it. You need to closely read the nutritional information on the back of the package. Some products appear to be wholesome, organic and natural; but once you check the grams of sugar or amount of carbs, it will be obvious that it’s not the best choice.

I always tell people, it’s not the calories or fat that matter, it’s the amount of sugar and carbs.

DRINK LOTS OF WATER STAY HYDRATED!

Keep your water bottle with you at all times.

You should be drinking a minimum of eight, 8-oz glasses of water each day. I know you have heard this 100 times, but it’s important and true. Water is a detox!! One handy trick is to buy a 64 ounce water jug. Fill it up in the morning and know that you need to finish it by the end of the day.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE EATING ENOUGH. When you are trying to lose weight, sometimes you may cut too many calories from your diet, which will result in the opposite effect.

If you don’t eat enough, you don’t get all of the nutrients your body needs and the consequence will be that you will start burning muscle mass instead of fat. Your lean muscle tissue helps maintain your metabolism. If you don’t eat enough (of the right foods), your body will start taking whatever you eat and storing it as fat. Your body will feel deprived and store whatever you are feeding it as fuel.

MOVIE REVIEW

Mary Poppins Returns By Lauren Stanford I’m not sure what it would have been like to see the original “Mary Poppins” in theaters in 1964, but I hope it was similar to my experience last weekend.

Everything about this movie oozed classic Disney charm, from the musical score and songs to the fantastical whimsy nearly all the characters seemed to possess. There have been a few great musicals this year, but nothing could compare to the magic of “Mary Poppins Returns.”

Of all the live-action cash grabs Disney has been making lately, a sequel to a musical from 50 years ago with no real merchandising opportunities or commercial tie-in doesn’t seem like the obvious choice for a holiday blockbuster.

And yet, the timelessness of P.L. Travers’ stories of a magical nanny and the Banks family is appropriate for anyone in any decade. It may have taken 54 years for her return, but Mary Poppins always arrives exactly when she’s needed, and I have a feeling we could use her right about now.

In Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks are told their home will be repossessed in five days unless Michael can pay back a loan. His only hope is to find a missing certificate that shows proof of valuable shares that his father left him years earlier.

When all hope seems lost, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (played by Emily Blunt) returns to help the Bankses, including Michael’s three children, in their time of need. Through her unique magical skills — and with the aid of her lamplighter friend Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda) — Mary helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

ook no further than the opening credits sequence previewing the upcoming movie with gorgeous paintings of scenes from the story underscored with an overture previewing some of the songs, it’s all reminiscent of the original film. There’s even a scene where they jump into a hand-drawn animated world.

Blunt knocks it out of the park with her performance as the titular nanny. Between this and “A Quiet Place,” she is having one of the best years of her career. I can’t think of another actor who can play narcissistic and stern one minute and be full of joy and charisma the next like Blunt can. While she’s no Julie Andrews, it’s a tremendous portrayal of the character.

Unfortunately, those aren’t the only thing that reminded me of the first film. You would have thought the executives and writers behind the sequel procrastinated until the last minute and then decided to just make it follow the same beats of the original with each scene in the same order.

While the entire cast does a great job, the standout character of the film is the production itself. Even though the story takes place about 25 years after the original, London looks and feels like the same one audiences saw in 1964.

As each scene led into the next, I knew where they were going, what type of song we were going to hear, when the sad moments would seep in and so on, so nothing surprised me.

The Cherry Tree Lane set, where the Banks home is located and several of the significant scenes happen in and around, is one of the most beautifully crafted stages in a Disney film. In addition to some “real” locations, the streets of London have a spiritual essence about them that is both dark and mysterious as well as magical and inspiring.

And yet, at the end of an extremely long and tiring 2018, that’s exactly what I needed. Mary Poppins comes into our lives when we need her most, and I think a lot of people around the world need her right now.
