Simpson Released From Prison After 9 Years Former football legend OJ Simpson became a free man again on October 1st after serving nine years for a botched hotel-room heist in Las Vegas that brought the prison time he avoided in the killings of his exwife and her friend after his 1995 acquittal in the “trial of the century.” in northern Nevada.

Economy Grows at Fastest Clip in 2 Years

The US economy grew at an upgraded annual rate of 3.1% in the spring, the fastest pace in more than two years.

But growth is expected to slow sharply this quarter in the wake of a string of devastating hurricanes, per the AP. The April-June expansion in the gross domestic product—the economy’s total output of goods and services—is up slightly from a 3% estimate made a month ago, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. It is the strongest performance since the economy grew at a 3.2% pace in the first quarter of 2015.

The upward revision reflected larger farm stockpiles.

The year started with a lackluster 1.2% gain in the first quarter. Economists believe growth has slowed again to around 2% in the current quarter. The revised figure was the government’s third and final look at GDP for the April-June period, and left GDP rising at an average 2% pace over the first six months of the year. That matches the lackluster average annual growth rates seen since the recovery from the Great Recession began in mid-2009. Economists at Macroeconomic Advisers believe that growth in the current quarter could tumble by as much as 1.2 percentage points due to hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. But analysts think the initial losses to GDP will be made up in subsequent quarters as rebuilding gets underway.

Los Angeles Is Losing Its Palm Trees

Invasive insects, fungus, and old age are killing off Los Angeles’ iconic palm trees—and despite their fame. the city isn’t planning on replacing many of them. As the city’s estimated 75,000 palm trees die off, the city plans to replace them with species that consume less water and will help the city’s people deal with the warming climate, the Guardian reports. “Palms are decorative and iconic, but Los Angeles is facing more and more heatwaves, so it’s important that we plant trees that provide adequate shade to protect people and cool the city down,” says Elizabeth Skrzat of the city’s tree-planting department.

“Over the next 50 years, you will see a great loss in palms. It’s already begun,” Jared Farmer, author of Trees in Paradise told the LA Times. He says in the late early 20th century, the city imported palm species from all over the world, and they soon became the symbol of the expanding city. “Hollywood creates this connection between palm trees, celebrities, glamour, sex, and extravagant riches,” he says. Environmentalists say the Los Angeles die-off is part of a wider crisis that is causing millions of trees to die across southern California as the state becomes hotter and drier, conditions in which bugs that destroy vegetation thrive.

Teen Golfer Pulls Off Feat With Odds of 1-in-67M

A Pennsylvania high school golfer has defied huge odds by recording two holes-in-one in the same round, per the AP. Coroner: We May Never Know What Happened to Otto Warmbier

The death of Otto Warmbier is a mystery and it will probably stay that way unless somebody from North Korea comes forward with information, Hamilton County Coroner Lakshmi Sammarco said. At a press conference in Cincinnati, the coroner said the American student’s death was caused by complications from braindamaging oxygen deprivation around six months into his imprisonment in North Korea, but the cause of the initial “insult” could not be determined, reports Reuters. “We don’t know what happened to him, and that’s the bottom line,” she said.

Warmbier’s family declined an autopsy, but Sammarco said a CT scan served as a “virtual autopsy.”

Sammarco, whose report stated there were no signs of torture on Warmbier’s body, said he had apparently been well cared for during the year or more he was bedridden, the AP reports. Sammarco said she decided to speak to the press after Warmbier’s parents told national media he had been tortured and “destroyed,” the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. She said a forensic dentist found no damage to the 22-year-old’s teeth, which father Fred Warmbier said looked like they had been rearranged with pliers. “They’re grieving parents. I can’t really make comments on their perceptions,” she said.

Hijacked Plane Brought Home After 40 Years

A Lufthansa passenger jet that was hijacked to Somalia 40 years ago at the height of a far-left militant group’s campaign against West German authorities has returned home. The DPA news agency reported Saturday that most parts of the Boeing 737 arrived Saturday in the city of Friedrichshafen, where they will be reassembled and displayed at the Dornier Museum. The remainder is due to arrive Wednesday from Brazil. The aircraft ended up in a Brazilian carrier’s fleet and had been sitting decommissioned at the country’s Fortaleza Airport for years.

A Palestinian group demanding the release of members of West Germany’s Red Army Faction hijacked a Mallorca to Frankfurt flight in October 1977, the AP reports. The hijacking marked the peak of the “German Autumn” of leftist violence.

German commandos stormed the plane in Mogadishu, Somalia, killing three hijackers and rescuing all 86 passengers.

Surviving members of the flight crew were also rescued, though pilot Juergen Schumann had been shot dead earlier by one of the hijackers.

Man, 65, Saves Busload of Tourists From Tragedy

A French tourist is being praised for saving a busload of fellow passengers from “catastrophe” after the driver passed out. The bus was on a winding road in the Austrian Alps near Schwaz when the 76-yearold driver collapsed, the BBC reports. As the bus was careening toward a precipice, a 65-year-old man sitting near the front jumped from his seat and managed to hit the brakes at the last second, per Le Quotidien. The bus slammed into a wooden barrier, preventing it from hurtling down a slope and over a 328-foot cliff.

LQ published a photo of the bus, its front end punctured by the barrier, tilting down a grassy hill. A local police rep praised the hero passenger’s quick reflexes. “We were a hair’s breadth from catastrophe,” he tells AFP. He calls it “incredible luck” the man managed to stop the bus. In 2004, five tourists were killed when their bus plunged down a 98-foot embankment south of Salzburg, Austria, the BBC notes ShopInRI 5

SHEETPAN EGGS

Ingredients:

2 dozen eggs, scrambled 12 sausage patties, precooked 2 large handfuls of spinach, wilted in a pan with some olive oil 1 large onion, thinly sliced, and sautÊed until caramelized in a little olive oil cheddar cheese or feta, optional milk or cream, optional butter olive oil When you’ve got 20 people showing up at your house for breakfast the morning after hosting a huge party the night before, you want to make it all as easy as possible for yourself. Sheet pan eggs are the answer!

I pre-cook everything but the eggs the day before...I caramelized some onions, cooked sausage patties and cut them into small cubes, and wilted a couple of handfuls of spinach...then kept them in the fridge, ready to use. Grating or crumbling some cheese--cheddar or feta--is also a good idea.

The next morning, I get a large bowl out and scramble 2 dozen eggs. A touch of milk or cream is optional. Then I add all the pre-cooked ingredients, stirring well.

The secret to successful sheet pan eggs is to make sure the pan is greased really well.

Using a cube of butter, I cover every inch of the sheet pan thoroughly. Then, I pour a small amount of extra virgin olive oil in the pan, and spread that around with my fingers.

Once the pan is nicely greased, I carefully pour the contents of the bowl into the sheet pan and place it in a 300-degree oven.

Let the sheet pan eggs bake at this temperature, resisting to hurry the process by cranking the heat up. Higher temperatures will burn the bottom before the top is properly cooked. Eventually, you’ll see the bottom of the pan solidify while the top is still a bit runny. Be patient! When the top is cooked to your liking, remove it from the oven and let it cool for at least 5 minutes before slicing it into squares.

To serve, either go the sandwich route by toasting some fresh slider buns, or simply serve a square on a plate, garnishing as you like, a little Tabasco on the side.

By: Brian Lowney Whether it’s a great big dish of warm peach cobbler topped with rich vanilla ice cream, a tall glass of frosty sweet tea with a sprig of mint, or a bowl of zesty pimento cheese spread on crackers, fresh vegetables or bread slices, southern natives and local culinary experts Elizabeth Silva de Balboa and Rick Ecord enjoy good food and truly appreciate sharing old fashioned Southern hospitality through the many rich traditions that the South has to offer.

Last year, the two talented cooks joined forces to create “Miss Georgia’s Kitchen”, a line of food products with traditional Southern roots that has debuted with a delicious pimento cheese spread. The delectable concoction continues to win rave reviews from appreciative customers all over New England.

“We sold our first container of pimento cheese in January 2016,” begins de Balboa. “It’s something I’ve made for a long time and it’s something I’ve always kept in the fridge.”

According to de Balboa, the appetizing spread is a staple of Southern cuisine. The savory spread is often served with crackers, as an accompaniment to cocktails or beverages, or on top of juicy burgers. She adds that the crowd-pleaser is also popular when spread on a fried green tomato sandwich, hotdog, or served open faced and melted on a bagel. “It’s very versatile,” de Balboa exclaims.

The chef says that each batch of the pimento cheese spread is handcrafted and “made with love” from Vermont white sharp aged cheddar and other high quality locally sourced ingredients. “It has a distinct sharp flavor,” shares Ecord, adding that the cheese spread has several layers of unique and delicious flavors that comes from the unique spice blend he created.

De Balboa says that she likes to cook and entertain, and Ecord, a trained chef who now directs environmental and safety programs, emphasized that they are naturals as they build their new company around the savory product and will eventually expand their new business.

While Ecord works in product development, de Balboa is responsible for marketing and sales, and her husband, Alex Silva de Balboa’s focus is on production. “I get to have fun and get to create,” he tells.

“This is just the first product of a line of Southern foods that are ideal for hosting friends and families,” shares de Balboa. “Our cheese spread is unique,” the

food entrepreneur continues. “When Southerners taste it, they simply love it.

It has a much bolder taste. There is a lot going on. You get a kick of spiciness that makes you want more.” Our goal is to be throughout the New England area as we continue our expansion,” de Balboa says.

MGK Shrimp & Pimento Cheese Grits Recipe

MGK Shrimp and Pimento Cheese Grits Recipe Shrimp and grits is major comfort food, and MGK developed a recipe for a casserole version that is super easy to make and really delicious. This one is a crowd pleaser!

Directions:

Ingredients:

To make the pimento cheese grits, heat milk and water to just boiling and add the grits. Lower heat and simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. Add the egg and MGK pimento cheese to the grits. Salt and pepper to taste (we like a lot of pepper) and spoon grits into the baking dish. Bake for 10-15 minutes.

3 cups Milk ½ cup Water 1 cup Grits or Polenta (not instant) 1Egg, beaten 12 ounces MGK Pimento Cheese 3 T Butter, divided 4 cups Shrimp (completely shelled and de-veined) 1Diced Onion 1 T Diced Jalapeno Pepper (optional if using Ro-tel) 2 cloves Garlic 28 oz. Ro-tel (tomatoes and green chilies) ½ cup Cream Cheese 2 t Creole Spice (such as Zatarains) To taste Salt and Pepper 1 cup Cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 350. Butter a 13x9 baking dish and set aside.

To make the shrimp, add 2 T butter to a nonstick pan and sauté shrimp until they just turn pink. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add the remaining butter and sauté onion until softened slightly. Add garlic and Ro-tel, bring to a boil, then lower heat. Simmer for 5 minutes, then add the creole spice and cream cheese and stir well until incorporated. Add the cooked shrimp.

To make the casserole, pour the shrimp mixture over the pimento cheese grits in the casserole dish, sprinkle cheese on top and bake for approximately 30 minutes. Rest the casserole for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Pan A Day: Bringing A Taste Of The Caribbean to the West End Of Providence

Camilla Indira Baffoni is no stranger to cooking with unique spices and lots of flavor. Coming from two cultures that are known for very flavorful culinary dishes, she has family that came from India and she herself grew up in Guyana, a country on the North Atlantic coast of South America; Guyana is culturally connected to the Caribbean region, giving the food a wide range of flavors that have evolved over centuries.

Growing up as the youngest member of the family, she was always sort of pushed aside in the kitchen and was more of a spectator. Cooking was left up to the older people. Every household in Guyana has their own family recipes, and they are secret. They have their own unique way of blending spices, making cook up rice, curries… Her mother never really worked with recipes. She just knew how to make a fabulous meal out of what was available. Camilla noticed how many of the dishes were started and what went into them and as she got older, she started to cook and develop her own recipes out of traditional meats, vegetables and spices.

The time was right for Camilla to take her passion for food to the next level. In July of 2017, she opened Pan A Day; a small restaurant on the corner of Parade Street and Westminster Street on Providence’s West End. It’s the only Caribbean/ West Indian restaurant in the state and has been received very well since opening. With a small staff of four people, one being Camilla herself, and three other people coming from cultures in St Martin and the Dominican Republic, they are familiar with the cooking techniques and flavors Camilla wishes to bring into the neighborhood.

Pan A Day is a small restaurant with some window seating inside and a few small tables for sidewalk seating. Everything is made fresh and from scratch every day. There is nothing stored in the freezer. Dishes are cooked one pot at a time.

This is homestyle cooking, and it’s healthy. Meats are bought locally from RI Beef and Baffoni Poultry Farm. A lot of spices are able to be shipped to her but she makes special trips to NY to stock up on what is not easily available. Camilla explains how she likes to see some items in person so she knows exactly what she’s getting and that it is good quality. She also tries to buy as much organic produce as possible but also wants to keep prices affordable while still offering the best quality meal that she can.

Every day, Pan A Day offers vegetable rice, cook up rice with coconut milk and beans, empanadas, stuffed yucca (vegetable or meat), jerk spareribs ( these have become a neighborhood favorite), stuffed cone with vegetable or meat , plantain and traditional flatbread called Roti. The menu changes by the day. On Tuesdays they will make potato curry, curry chicken, and a chef ’s choice. Wednesdays they feature ox tail and jerk chicken amongst the regular menu items. On Thursday, you can order ox tail again, curry chicken, curry potato, vegetable of the day or the chef ’s choice special. Friday they feature fish, curry goat or goat stew. Saturdays and Sundays, jambalaya and masala chicken are added to the menu. There is something for everyone whether you are a vegetarian or a meat eater.

By: Chelsea Hutchings Most of us know that Columbus Day is currently a national holiday in the Americas (and elsewhere) which officially celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas on October 12th, 1492. Still, there are many aspects of Columbus Day that are not common knowledge to many Americans.

Although Americans have been celebrating the voyage of Christopher Columbus since the colonial period, it didn’t become an official state holiday until 1905. A few decades later in 1937, Columbus Day became a federal holiday. However, there were several U.S. cities (most notably New York City) who did celebrate the 300th anniversary of the navigator’s landing. In 1892, then President Benjamin Harrison urged citizens to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the event. This early celebration focused around using rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. Ideals such as citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to a nation, and the cele24 ShopInRI

Though for many, Columbus Day symbolizes the founding of the Americas, many Italian-Americans observe the holiday as a celebration of their heritage. The day was first preserved as a legal holiday in the United States through the lobbying of Angelo Noce in 1905. Noce was a first-generation Italian from Denver. Columbus Day became a statutory holiday in 1907. As a result of serious lobbying by the Knights of Columbus and New York City Italian leader Generoso Pope, Congress and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared October 12th a federal holiday.

Since 1970, the holiday has been on the second Monday in October (coincidentally the same day as Thanksgiving in neighboring Canada). Generally observed by banks, the bond market, the United States Postal Service, other federal agencies, most state government offices, many businesses, and most school districts, some businesses and some stock exchanges remain open, and some states and municipalities abstain from observing the holiday. Historically, the U.S. states of Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, South Dakota, and Vermont do not recognize Columbus Day at all. However, Hawaii, South Dakota, and Vermont do mark the day with an alternative holiday or observance.

However, both historically and recently, there has been much controversy regarding the holiday. Much of the debate for celebrating Columbus Day (or not), is because the settlement of the Europeans in the Americas led to the deaths of a significantly large number of the native population.

The Federal Hill Commerce Association will be hosting its Annual Columbus Day Weekend Festival on historic Federal Hill in Providence, Rhode Island from Oct. 7th through Oct. 9th, 2017. The festival has been recognized as one of the best Columbus Day Festivals to attend, with great food and entertainment.

The Annual Columbus Day Parade will take place on Sunday, October 8th at 11am on Atwells Ave in Providence, RI.

In recent months, the City of Los Angeles has become the largest city in our nation to remove Columbus Day as an official holiday. In a unanimous decision by the City Council, the choice was made to replace it with a day to commemorate indigenous people.

Most recently, Portland, the largest city in Maine voted to celebrate Columbus Day no longer. The vote followed nearly an hour-long hearing, during which a former president of the Italian American Heritage Center in Portland said the switch is a “slap in the face” to local Italians.

On the other side of the debate, many Italian Americans want to keep the tradition. Italian-Americans feel it gives a greater appreciation to their heritage which was the result of the faith, courage and fortitude of the Genoese navigator and his brave counterparts.

Still, amidst the debate, here in the Ocean State, the tradition Columbus Day Festival and Parade on Federal Hill remains highly revered by so many. This year’s parade promises not to disappoint! Car traffic is shut down for this party in the streets featuring music, rides, games, a marketplace, vendors and most importantly, food. Lots of food! Annually, nearly 100,000 people at-

Hosted by the Federal Hill Commerce Association, the Annual Columbus Day Weekend Festival will be held from October 7th though the 9th. Recognized as one the best Columbus Day Festivals to attend nationwide, some of the entertainment (there are even two stages) highlights include Ronnie Sands, Steve Anthony, Timeless, Legacy Band and Tribeca. The Annual Columbus Day Parade will take place on Sunday October 8th at 11:00 a.m.

One of the largest Columbus Day celebrations outside the borders of our state is in New York City. This year, the Big Apple has advertised the celebration with a bit of tongue in cheek humor saying, “NYC will be giving a proverbial toast to the man who discovered the Americas (more or less).” The Columbus Day Parade is actually one of the biggest events in NYC! Over 35,000 marchers and groups participate in the party held on Fifth Avenue.

Regardless of position, citizens nation-wide will likely stay tuned to this heated debate in the coming years. For Rhode Islanders, the Columbus Day Festival and Parade remain a top celebration and this year’s festivities, games, live entertainment, and food promise not to disappoint!

Get to know the Surgeons at Leonard Hair Transplant Associates From Dr. Robert Leonard: Hi, I’m Dr. Robert Leonard, Founder and Chief Surgeon of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates. For over 30 years, treating men and women suffering from hair loss has been my passion. Prior to becoming the “Hair Doctor”, my plan was to become an OB/Gyn. But after my wife, a fellow physician, became pregnant with our first child, I left my OB/Gyn residency for a more family-friendly specialty, training under Dr. C.P. Chambers. Dr. Chambers was a leading hair transplant surgeon back in the days when early Joe Biden-style hair plugs were the industry standard. Male and female pattern baldness, a condition affecting some 80 million Americans, was also beginning to draw more serious attention from medical professionals.

It was a huge risk to leave an established residency program, and I really didn’t know much about hair transplantation, but when I decide to do something, I jump in all the way.

New surgical procedures and an aging boomer generation seeking its fountain of youth have changed the game dramatically over the past 31 years. Our business has grown to include six offices in three states, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. My partner, Dr. Matthew Lopresti and I perform surgeries in two locations, Cranston and Newton. The other offices are for consultations, where we provided free-of-charge consultations and with a large dose of hand holding and psychological counseling.

For many people, losing their hair is heart wrenching; they’ll talk about not going anywhere without a baseball cap on, or never going swimming. One big concern of mine is bringing this issue out of the closet.

Hair transplant surgery has been around since the late 1950s, but the results in those days often appeared less-than-natural.

Since I began in this field, thankfully, the cosmetic results have dramatically improved for the better.

Surgical transplants that once took multiple sessions to complete are now done in one office visit of 4 to 6 hours, under local anesthesia. Hair grafts are harvested by two different surgical methods. One technique involves removing a strip of hair-bearing skin from the donor area, which is then

dissected into tiny grafts of one to four follicles apiece.

The other method of harvesting grafts is called the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), where grafts are removed individually after being removed with a tiny punch.

These grafts are then surgically implanted in balding or thin areas on top. Each technique is offered at Leonard Hair Transplant Associates.

Nothing is different between the two methods as far as the recipient area (where the grafts are being planted) goes. The area to be transplanted is marked, numbed, and then the surgeon will make many hundreds of tiny incisions into which the grafts are placed. The newly transplanted hairs begin to grow in about four months and they will grow and grow and grow! At 18 months, transplanted hair is fully grown. These new hairs can be washed, combed, cut, curled, dyed, and otherwise treated as your own naturally growing hair—because it actually is!

The other therapies that are very important for my patients to use are medically proven, scientifically sound treatments that stop the progression of their hair loss. Many patients are thrilled if they just could stop losing more hair and stay where they are. These excellent treatments are: Rogaine Foam, Propecia, and the CapillusRx 312 Laser Device. I tell my patients all the time that it is easier to keep the hair that they have rather than to replace it. And, it is so very true!

Dr. Lopresti and I are very honest with people during their free hair loss consultation; not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. If a woman, for example, has thinning hair all over her head, then I usually won’t have enough hair to transplant. Or, if someone has totally unrealistic expectations as far as results, then I will not transplant that individual.

It has been a sincere honor and a great pleasure to have taken care of thousands of patients with their particular hair loss problem during these three decades of my long career. One of the most defining characteristics that we possess is our hair. Our hair even may be a reflection of personal beliefs, attitude, age, gender and religious beliefs. Running and Squats... The Dos and Don’ts Susan Gazzero How does one build endurance to run? Following are some tips that will help you to progress, not only with endurance, but with your overall running workout.

1. Slow your pace.

You’ll save energy for those bonus miles by slowing your pace. As with any exercise, it should be challenging, but doable. The talk test is a great way to test this. You should be able to talk moderately with some effort.

If it’s too difficult to talk, you are working too hard and your heart rate is likely too high. If it’s super easy to hold a conversation, you are not working hard enough.

2. Add miles gradually.

To keep injuries and burnout at bay, tack on no more than one half of a mile to a mile per week, or every two weeks, depending on how often you run.

(For marathoners, add no more than two to three miles per week.)

3. Do one long run per week.

Pick a day to tackle a new distance (weekends tend to work better for most people). A long run for everyone is different. If you are running three to five miles per run, try running a ten mile for your long run. My advice is to add five or more miles to your normal run when doing a long run. Progress each week by adding another half mile to your run.

However, be sure to scale back your long run distance every three to four weeks to avoid overtraining.

4. Take walk breaks.

You will still reap the benefits of running nonstop. Before you know it, you’ll be able to run from start to finish.

5. Fuel the body.

Do not run on empty.

On runs longer than an hour, bring along fuel that’s rich in carbohydrates and electrolytes. Start fueling about 30 minutes into the run and refuel every 15 to 20 minutes.

6. Break it up.

Mentally segment your run into manageable parts so that you’re not intimidated by the full distance. For instance, a 15 mile run could be thought of as three 5 milers.

More than half of running successfully is mental.

7. Run a looped route.

If not indoors on a treadmill, consider running a one to five mile run in order to stay close to necessities. You don’t want to too far away if you have to quit unexpectedly.

8. Be patient.

Building endurance takes time. You are going to have good runs and not so good runs. Never, ever give up.

Squats: Having nice, firm legs is a status symbol of sexiness and willpower, especially for women. To get there, doing squats is a must. However, be on the lookout for common mistakes.

MISTAKE 1: TOO WIDE OF A STANCE Some say that this is debatable. Powerlifters will swear that everyone, other than themselves stands way too narrow while doing squats. Their goal is to put up as much weight as possible and they only care about developing muscular looking thighs.

A wide stance allows the barbell to be loaded up with multiple plates on each side, but other than the power and strength aspects, it will not result in the expected look.

The perfect position: Your stance should be just a little wider than your hips. This is the best choice for both range of motion and time under tension.

MISTAKE 2: PRESSURE

LOWER BACK POSITION AND

This is important for preventing injuries. Your lumbar spine should not be too curved. Putting too much pressure on it with a bad position can result in a herniated disc. But flattening your lower back doesn’t mean to lean your upper body forward.

The perfect position: Your lower back should be flat with a slight arch throughout the entire set.

MISTAKE 3: LEANING FORWARD Sloppy form on squats usually begins with a balance issue and trying to make up for it by leaning forward. This just may be the riskiest mistake that people can make, resulting in injuries of all severities.

The perfect position: Proper squat technique means that your chest should be out and your shoulders back.

MISTAKE 4: TOO SHALLOW OR TOO DEEP Not going low enough on squats is common, and the main reason is because of bad positioning or because going lower is too much of an effort. Don’t stop going lower because it hurts!

Going too low is also a mistake. This just adds unnecessary pressure on the knees. Powerlifters, with their super wide stance, believe that anything less than “ass to grass” is not enough. Not true.

The perfect position: Place your feet just a little wider than shoulder width apart. Squat with the hips just a littler lower than the knees. This will work your quads, hamstrings, and glutes.

MISTAKE 5: FEET AND KNEES NOT LINED UP PROPERLY Some people say that having your knees ahead of your toes as you decline is fine and will allow you to go deeper. This will throw your form off by shifting your weight from your heels to the toes.

Even if you don’t hurt a knee, your balance will be affected and you may likely end up leaning too far forward.

The perfect position: Have your knees straight over your toes as you go down.

These are just some tips to ensure perfect form to build endurance, which both should help achieve the result you are looking for. I am always amazed when people ask where I get my energy. How can you run or workout so much? I have built up the endurance. This is not something you are born with, or at least I wasn’t. This has taken discipline and dedication. I have always wanted to be the healthiest possible. I knew that training to run and exercising would also result in a fit body; but that was the fringe benefit to being healthy.

There is one item though that as well intentioned as many of these roofers are, often becomes the source of a head scratching issue for the Client and an unbeknownst negative knock that scars what otherwise would be pretty perfect roof jobs everywhere – chimney flashing.

Chimneys can often rise up in the middle of one’s roof, met by the roofing material around it and if it does not have flashing correctly staggered and cut & pointed into the actual chimney itself and woven into the roof shingles or material around it the correct way, mysterious leaks may gradually make themselves known at the bewilderment of unsuspecting property owners who cannot figure out why their new roof is leaking. The roofer is often called back in and they themselves cannot figure things out (the important note of this being that if they knew what to look for, they most likely would have made sure things were done right the first time).

Appropriately flashing a chimney is an enormously important construction item that combines two trades (masonry & roofing) to ensure that moisture does not come in through the penetration of the chimney through the roof. As common sense as this may seem, we run into situations all the time where much damage is caused below because of inappropriately flashed or tied-in chimneys.

If you have a mysterious leak that seems like it may be stemming from the general vicinity of where your chimney goes through your building and out your roof, an improperly flashed chimney may be the culprit. If you are having a challenge determining if your chimney was flashed the way it should have been or not, whether recently or from years ago, feel free to reach out to us to have a conversation about the situation and we will be happy to provide some guidance. Dealing with leaks and where they start from is the bane of the existence of many-a-property owner.

Making sure that chimneys are flashed appropriately, however, is one checklist item that should not be forgotten!

Pumpkin spice is everywhere and it’s a great time to start house hunting. Yes, that’s right; it’s the perfect time for house hunting. To your surprise, we are not in the off-season in real estate. It is the prime season for many buyers and sellers.

For buyers, there is still plenty of inventory of homes on the market. Some sellers have been sitting on their homes that didn’t move during the prime season of spring and summer. After months of inactivity, many of these sellers are eager to close a deal at a price more appealing to buyers to avoid remarketing next spring.

Sellers realize that there are less buyers in the fall and may drop their price. A motivated seller will more likely be more negotiable with a buyer.

You can look forward to less activity at open houses, as well as less competition overall. Most families are already settled in to a new school year with their children and are not interested in moving to a new school district.

Holidays are approaching and the thought of adding more stress to their lives is unappealing. Most sellers are looking to sell before the holidays. You could very possibly be in your new home for Thanksgiving.

Sellers will most likely see more serious buyers in the fall. The many reasons why one is eager to close a deal on a home is the same reason why buyers share the same eagerness. Everyone wants to be settled in before the holidays and the approaching winter months. Never be afraid to sell or buy a home when you have the urge, based on the time of year. Other than right around Christmastime, there is no bad time to buy or sell; so, don’t be fooled!

When asked to write an article, I’m always amazed at how much I learn. I’m intrigued with how interesting different businesses can be. We all have passions. Mine happen to be writing, fitness and pets; so again, it astounds me that an interview at a random company can be so inspiring. And, the fact that I get to then pass the information and knowledge on to our readers is an added bonus.

Let me tell you about Scituate Oil Company, Inc. and why it is different from other oil companies. A few of the words that came to mind when writing this article were honesty, efficiency, compassion, and loyalty. The company sits on 25 acres and once I was there, the size of the property made good sense. They actually run three companies: Scituate Oil, Scituate Portable Restrooms and Scituate Cesspool. So what can be said about Portable Restrooms? To start, they allow for customization with your own choices of color, theme, etc. So if it’s a child’s birthday, wedding, or graduation, etc., the portable restroom can be customized per your needs. They not only do their best to offer cost savings, they pride themselves on cleanliness and honesty. They are known statewide due to the large events they have satisfactorily serviced over the years. These events include: the Scituate Art

Scituate Oil does not have a rapid turn over with employees. Actually, I’m not even sure that they have a turn over at all. While at the office, the atmosphere was a feeling of one big happy family. Many times when the phone rang or someone walked through the door, they seemed to know the office manager, Mary. The longer I was there and the more I spoke with Donna, daughter of Gene and Barbara D’Allesandro, and her employees, the more evident it was that a primary reason for the uniqueness of this company is because of the wonderful staff ! Not only did Mary know a lot of the customers, but as calls were coming in, I could hear the oil drivers say, “Park on the side of that house and go around

back. Don’t use the front entrance on that house; use the side. Be careful when you enter that house; there’s a protective dog,” etc. The drivers also know there customers extremely well. The relationships between staff and customers speak volumes to me.

They aren’t just delivering oil or providing a service; they are taking the time to become familiar with their customers and the customers’ needs. And, learning that they service all of Rhode Island and Eastern Connecticut truly impressed me.

They service 12 months a year, both commercial and residential. The company’s adamant about following all state guidelines. They retrofit all equipment for accuracy, their trucks are routinely tested by the State of Rhode Island, and their equipment is of the highest quality. They use electronic meters as opposed to mechanical meters, meaning that there’s no mechanical issues, and everything is computerized.

Also impressive is although it has been in operation for decades, the company has progressed with the times when it comes to social media. They use Facebook to update oil prices and to display information notices.

You can place an order directly from their website and have next day delivery. If an order is placed online, you

will receive a phone call confirming their arrival. They will also call to arrange payment, as they do offer large quantity discounts and cash discounts. They also accept checks and credit cards. If you run out of oil and it’s an emergency situation, no problem; they will ensure same day delivery. The regular schedule is six days during the cold months, closed on Sundays, and open five days during the warmer weather. All orders for oil are next day delivery. Consider Multiple Factors When Creating Retirement Plans

When you create your financial and investment strategies for retirement, what will you need to know? In other words, what factors should you consider, and how will these factors affect your investment-related decisions, before and during your retirement?

Consider the following: Age at retirement – Not surprisingly, your retirement date likely will be heavily influenced by your financial situation – so, if you have to keep working, that’s what you’ll do. But if you have a choice in the matter, your decision could have a big impact on your investment strategy. For example, if you want to retire early, you may need to save and invest more aggressively than you would if you plan to work well past typical retirement age. Also, your retirement date may well affect when you start accepting Social Security payments; if you retire early, you might have to start taking your benefits at age 62, even though your monthly checks will be considerably smaller than if you waited until your “full” retirement age, which is likely to be 66 or 67.

Retirement lifestyle – Some people want to spend their retirement years traveling from Athens to Zanzibar, while others simply want to stay close to home and family, pursuing quiet, inexpensive hobbies. Clearly, the lifestyle you choose will affect how much you need to accumulate before you retire and how much you will need to withdraw from your various investment accounts once you do.

Second career – Some people retire from one career only to begin another. If you think you’d like to have a “second act” in your working life, you might need some additional training, or you might just put your existing expertise to work as a consultant. If you do launch a new career, it could clearly affect your financial picture. For one thing, if you add a new source of earned income, you might be able to withdraw less from your retirement accounts each year. (Keep in mind, though, that once you reach 70 ½, you will have to take at least some withdrawals from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan.) On the other hand, if you keep earning income, you can continue putting money into a traditional IRA (until you’re 70 ½) or a Roth IRA (indefinitely) and possibly contribute to a retirement plan for the self-employed, such as a SEP-IRA or an “owner-only” 401(k).

Philanthropy – During your working years, you may have consistently donated money to charitable organizations. And once you retire, you may want to do even more. For one thing, of course, you can volunteer more of your time. But you also might want to set up some more permanent method of financial support. Consequently, you might want to work with your legal advisor and financial professional to incorporate elements of your investment portfolio into your estate plans to provide more support for charitable groups.

As you can see, your retirement goals can affect your investment strategy – and vice versa. So, think carefully about what you want to accomplish, plan ahead and get the help you need. It takes time and effort to achieve a successful retirement, but it’s worth it.

By Elizabeth Greenberg It used to be easier, I suppose, way back when we only needed our Dove soap, Nivea Cream and Jolene Bleach. If you were fancy, you indulged in a homemade remedy such as a masque or mud-pack. I remember using egg whites for my masque and sometimes oatmeal. (It almost became lunch!) Oh, and the famous Queen Helen Mint Julep Mask- a dark leafy green, muddy goop that you slathered over your entire face, whites of your eyes and teeth flashing, and head wrapped in an Egyptian cotton terry turban. My mother regularly used the Queen Helen and, as a young girl, I followed suit. Once your pores started peeking through the dried caked-on mud, you “were ready”. We then seemed 64 ShopInRI

to glow the entire day- becoming instant “shiny, happy people”.

In addition to cleansing, steaming our faces with boiled kettle water over the sink, and various putty masques, the seventies and eighties definitively had its own agenda with tanning. George Landrigan. O’Connor founded LRSE in 1983. O’Connor said that the purchase was more than just business for him.

Their team is comprised of the foremost experts in marine safety and survival equipment, which is all factory-trained and certified in the latest national, international, industry and manufacturer regulations.

Their service center is located about 10 miles north of Newport, RI, and is one of the largest U.S. Coast Guard approved servicing facilities in the country.

They will continue offering their services at their Fish Road/Tiverton and Jeffries Street/East Boston locations.

After the ever-so-popular novel by Stephen King and the TV show; it’s been 27 years, and IT has returned for another time.

The movie starts in the quiet town of Derry where a young boy named Bill ( Jaeden Lieberher) and his brother Georgie ( Jackson Robert Scott) are constructing a paper boat to sail.

As Georgie very hesitantly goes downstairs into the cellar to retrieve the wax, he notices two gleaming eyes in the darkness.

However, when he shines the flashlight on them, he realizes that it’s just two globes. Georgie heads outside in the pouring rain and follows his boat down the stream when it suddenly falls into a sewer grate. Heartbroken, he attempts to look for it when a terrifying face peers back at him out of the darkness.

The stranger introduces himself as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård). He explains that he had been swept away from his Circus by the storm and offers Georgie a balloon for him and his brother. Georgie declines and heads to leave, but Pennywise asks him if he would like his boat back and tells him to “take it”. Georgie does so, and Pennywise latches onto his arm, ripping it clean off. Georgie scrambles away, screaming and crying, only to be dragged into the sewer.

Fast forward one year. Bill and his friends, Richie (Finn Wolfhard), Eddie ( Jack Dylan Grazier), and Stanley (Wyatt Oleff ) are getting out of school; the summer of 1989. The group is constantly harassed by ‘The Neighborhood Gang’, Henry (Nicholas Hamilton), Belch ( Jake Sim), Victor (Logan Thompson), and Patrick (Owen Teague). The new boy, Ben ( Jeremy Ray Taylor) flirts with Beverly (Sophia Lillis), a bullied girl from school.

The story switches to another boy named Mike (Chosen Jacobs) who is on a farm and is forced to kill sheep. He refuses to do it, as he does not want to harm the animals. As he travels into town one day to deliver the meat, he notices bloody and burnt hands clawing from the door. When the door opens, a clown seems to be hanging from the meat hooks. Before he can react, Henry and his gang attempt to run him over with their car.

The ‘Loser Club’ meets up at Bill’s house where he convinces his friends to go to the marshlands in an attempt to find his 70 ShopInRI

brother Georgie. Bill is extremely convinced that he is still not dead. As they travel in the sewers, they meet a boy named Ben who is being chased by ‘The Neighborhood Gang’. They hide in the sewer, as one of the gang members pursues them with a lighter and bug spray. He is attacked and caught by Pennywise, and taken away.

The haunting continues after insert name here is attacked by a leper on Neibolt Street, and Beverly is haunted by the voices of the missing children. Blood is sprayed in her face, coating her bathroom. Her father comes to investigate, and she realizes that he cannot see the blood.

Bill is lured into his basement by the ghost of his brother. The illusion tells him, “You’ll float too; you’ll float too,” when IT jumps out of the water and attacks him. Bill narrowly gets away, and IT gleams.

The ‘Losers Club’ gets back together, however, they all realize that they are being pursued by the same evil entity, and set out to find it. They eventually head to Neibolt Street where they encounter Pennywise, as he tricks them into facing their very own fears. ‘The Loser Club’ manages to escape, but they start to fight with each other, and are forced to return to Neibolt Street to destroy IT once and for all.

Overall, I thought the movie was awesome. For me, being a horror movie virgin (I have never seen a horror movie in my life), I am glad that it is my first. I can say that it was an amazing movie (no pun intended), and that I would love to see it again. The plot was amazing, and I thought that the actor who played Pennywise was the perfect choice, as he instilled fear into not only the hearts of the characters, but also the hearts of viewers. During the entire movie, I had my hands on the edge of my seat, anticipating what was going to happen next. I was anxious for what was going to happen to the characters, as well. The plot twists were amazing, and I love that we could not predict what was going to happen next.

The only part that upset me was the ending; but you’ll have to find out for yourself ! If the ending was different, I would have given it a solid 6. I give IT a score of 5.6 out of 6 diamonds.

Davison Bolster:

Author and Artist of Noah’s Night Lights Jenn Lombari

“You never know where art is going to lead you”, explains Davison Bolster. He grew up watching his grandfather paint scenes from around New England. Although, his grandfather had passed away when Davison was only 8 years old, he knew at that young age that he wanted to be an artist.

His parents also encouraged his artistic skills throughout his life.

Having lived in Warren, RI for the last 40 years, Bolster thanks the community there for their support, encouragement, and their inspiration.

The first children’s book that he self-published was inspired by his next door neighbor, Amber, with the nickname “Bear”, a girl that had moved there from Nebraska.

and eventually created her own.

“The Story Of Am’ber’” was born.

The whole story uses bears as the characters, which makes it a delight for kids.

Out of his own interest in the subject of nature at night, Bolster became inspired to write the book after experiencing first-hand the many wonders that light up at night.

‘’Watercolors and words by Davison Bolster” was a phrase that was only just beginning to be recognized around town and the 250 hardcover books that he self-published quickly sold out.

Having worked so hard on this, Bolster now knows what goes into publishing a book. From the paintings to the words to having it become something that you can hold in your hands and share with loved ones. “The Story Of Am’ber’ “ came out two years ago, and only six months later, he started working on a second children’s book, “Noah’s Night Lights”.

He wrote for a year and a half and painted for a solid year. Twenty seven 14’’x20’’ detailed watercolor paintings of all the things that light up the night in nature were ready to accompany the story of Noah. He is a character loosely inspired by Davison Bolster, himself, growing up in the country settings of Maine and Connecticut.

Loving nature and wanting to know more about everything; reading books and exploring and telling others all about it. Bolster received his first telescope at the age of ten and loved looking at the stars and moon.

He noticed how bright nature is at night; from the sky to the snow to

the plankton phosphorescence in the water. Loving nature and wanting to know more about everything; reading books and exploring and telling others all about it, that’s Noah!

Bolster considered how ¾ of kids grow up in urban or suburban areas and are surrounded by manmade light. They don’t get to experience nature at night the way he describes through Noah’s story. He explains, “When you get to experience these things away from manmade light, they’re more than awesome… they’re spectacular!” The story also serves as a way to get kids excited about wanting to turn off the lights and not be afraid of the dark. He jokes, “Parents are going to love this book for that.”

“Noah’s Night Lights” is very educational. Sixty pages in total, Bolster researched the science behind each natural phenomenon within the story. This research is also seen within the detailed watercolor paintings. Each painting is two pages and the images bleed right to the edge of the pages so that the reader can “fall into the paintings”. Although he self-published his first book, he’s hoping that this one will be picked up by a publisher because it has a much bigger potential audience than his first book book. Noah’s Night Lights” is geared for ages 5-10 but it’s really for anyone. Infants can enjoy the pictures and grow into the words, any parent will enjoy the science, and any nature lover reminiscing of their childhood will connect with the character of Noah and the wonders of the night.

There’s so much to learn within the book as you follow Noah on his nighttime journey.

Davison Bolster celebrated the completion of the book on August 20 at Imago Gallery in Warren, RI. Here, he read the story to a room full of parents and children and other supporters from the community. It was called a “Kids Book Blastoff Party” because he’s getting ready to “blast it off ” to publishers. The event was professionally filmed, capturing the reactions of the audience and their excitement, and a DVD will accompany the finished work as it gets shipped to publishers and other important outlets. There is a GoFundMe page in place to raise enough money to create 25 hardcover copies of “Noah’s Night Lights” for submission to publishers. He explained that 90% of people are writers so they send a typed manuscript.

10% are illustrators so they submit PDFs on a flash drive. He doesn’t want a publisher to have to piece together his vision so he’s looking to submit a finished hardcover book. He wants them to see the project exactly as intended, not to envision how it “should be”.

If a publisher receives 2000 submissions per year, they might publish 20. “If it doesn’t knock em for a loop, don’t bother!”

Russ Smith & his canine friends just want to have fun.

“When the dogs pile into the van, they look for their buddy,” Smith tells, adding that the during the past two years, some of the canines have bonded with each other and formed friendships, just like their human counterparts. He adds that when one of the canines is absent; it’s just like missing an old friend.

Six mornings a week, the Tiverton, Rhode Island entrepreneur and several dogs of various shapes, sizes and ages, pile into a large van to enjoy a three-hour-long outdoor trek in the country to enjoy some fresh air, exercise and what the critters do best – play and have a lot of fun!

“I pick them up – door to door – in my van,” begins Smith, a former lawyer who developed the doggie day care business

Smith says the idea for the hiking group was started by his own dog, a golden retriever named Sienna, a loveable canine that loves to hike along woodland trails and play with other canines. “I call her our ‘den mother’,” Smith says.

“She shares me with all the other dogs.”

Smith says the business started as a part-time venture on weekends and eventually blossomed into a full-time business. He takes a maximum of nine dogs per day that allows him to provide optimum care and comfort.

“All of the seats in the van have been removed and the dogs sleep on heavy quilts,” the doggie day care provider notes. Smith says that once a session is over, the dogs curl up and sleep during the ride home. The pooches also enjoy occasional cookie breaks during their morning adventure.

“My personal enjoyment is to see them (the dogs) happy and

to bond with the other dogs,” Smith says, adding that the outdoor canine adventures allow the dogs to socialize and to get ample exercise in the great outdoors. “I try to send them home happy and tired,” Smith shares, adding that the treks usually cover about six miles each morning, and help the dogs to socialize and to become better canine citizens.

Smith and his well-mannered dogs to enjoy. Smith shares that while many of his canine companions like to jump in the pond, a few of the older dogs or those that are not fond of swimming prefer to just trot along and observe the scenery and enjoy the sunshine, provided it’s a nice day. “We go out in all kinds of weather,” the entrepreneur shares. “Most days we are out there.”

Smith gathers the dogs early in the morning and travels from Portsmouth to Dartmouth, Massachusetts to pick up the dogs, which numbers between three to nine, depending on the size of the pack joining the group.“ I plot my route just like a school bus,” he quips.

According to Smith, all canine participants in the outdoor hiking group must be fully vaccinated. All dogs are fully insured. Dogs are charged $25 per session; two dogs from the same household are charged $40.
