Children Now Banned From Viking Cruises
Viking Cruises says it has listened to its customers and given them what they asked for: no children. The Switzerland-based company, which restricted its ocean voyages to people over 18 when it launched the service in 2015, says it will no longer accept bookings for children on its river cruises, which had previously allowed those 12 and over. This gives the company one of the strictest age policies in the industry, though since it already had very few children on its cruises, which are generally marketed to people over 50, it is unlikely to cost it much business.
“Viking has always offered experiences that are designed for travelers who are 50 and older, with interests in history, art, culture and exploration. It’s what we’re known for,” a
company spokesperson said in a statement.
“Previously, we had allowed a degree of flexibility in the minimum age for travel, but increasingly our guests have told us how much they appreciate an environment where they can travel without children.” 4 ShopInRI

For First Time Ever, Fake Reviews Get A Man Sent to Jail For what is believed to be the first time, a person has been sent to jail for writing fake reviews online. The Italian man ran a company called PromoSalento, which sold hotels fake reviews, and in what’s being widely hailed as a landmark ruling this week a court in the country deemed the act was “criminal conduct” and sentenced him to nine months behind bars plus a $9,300 fine, Quartz reports. TripAdvisor, which has been fighting fake reviews for years, learned of PromoSalento after hotels let the tourism site know the company had approached them offering to sell
them reviews. TripAdvisor tracked the company down and issued a warning, but it didn’t halt its practices; ultimately, the Italian Postal and Communications Police started its own probe and TripAdvisor joined the prosecution as a civil claimant, sharing the evidence it had gathered. “Writing fake reviews has always been fraud, but this is the first time we’ve seen someone sent to jail as a result,” says a member of TripAdvisor’s legal team in a statement that also highlights the success the site has had tackling fake reviews.

Michael Kors Buys Versace for $2 Billion
Michael Kors is buying the Italian fashion house Gianni Versace in a deal worth more than $2 billion, continuing its hard charge into the world of high-end fashion. The deal announced follows the New York handbag maker’s $1.35 billion acquisition last year of the shoemaker Jimmy Choo, per the AP. After the deal goes through, the company will also take on a new name: Capri Holdings, “inspired by the fabled island which has long been recognized as an iconic, glamorous, and luxury destination,” per a release. Michael Kors Holdings Ltd., like others in the fashion industry, is trying to fire up sales by adding on big name brands like the globally revered Versace: Tapestry, for example, once known as Coach, owns Stuart Weitzman, and last year it acquired Kate Spade. The new company’s plans, per CNN, is to open more retail locations, enhance e-commerce services, and stretch more into the accessories and footwear categories. As for the sister of the late Versace founder? Donatella Versace “will continue to lead the company’s creative vision,” Michael Kors CEO John Idol says in the release. Donatella Versace, for her part, notes: “We believe that being part of this group is essential to Versace’s long-term success. My passion has never been stronger.”

FRESH CORN AND TOMATO SALAD This is a salad you want to make now, while corn and tomatoes are still in season, but I’ve found that frozen organic corn and greenhouse tomatoes work pretty darn well.

There’s something about Asian noodle dishes that make them incredibly addictive. They’re great hot or cold, and easy to make at home, which is important to me because I live in the boonies, about 30 miles from my favorite Asian restaurant. I store an arsenal of basic Asian ingredients in my pantry, so slapping this together is no effort at all. And if you don’t have Asian noodles around, chances are you’ve got a box of pasta, which works just as well. To make this recipe gluten-free, I use Gluten Free pasta, and you can find gluten-free hoisin sauce in the Asian food section of most supermarkets.

One of the highlights of a trip to Warren is a visit to Blount Market and Kitchen, a popular establishment well known for its delicious chowder, clam cakes, and seafood fresh from the ocean. The Blount family started in the food business in 1880 by harvesting oysters and clams from the waters of Narragansett Bay, and still maintains the tradition of delivering fresh seafood that customers have come to enjoy for generations. The company also operates the Blount Clam Shack, a seasonal outdoor facility located directly on the shores of the Warren River, where guests can enjoy beer, wine, and live music, in addition to delicious food. “It gets extremely busy on weekends,” begins Dave Waycott, director of operations for the company. “People come for the food, music, and the nice view of the Warren River.” He adds that diners often sit out on Adirondack chairs or on picnic tables, sip a beverage, observe the boat traffic, and witness a beautiful sunset. Among the “Rhody Favorites” listed on the menu are the clam cakes, served with a zesty house made clam cake sauce that should be bottled, and can also
be a topping for burgers, steak, and more. Other treats include the chourico stuffie and seafood stuffie, the latter filled with bits of scallops, shrimp, and lobster. Another popular menu item and one that is also popular with out-of-town visitors who aren’t fortunate to live near the sea, is the Rhode Island Calamari – delicious rings and tentacles of squid with the restaurant’s Kick ‘N’ Bayou sauce and fried banana rings. Folks of all ages will enjoy Blount’s appetizing chowder, served in a cup or bowl. Served New England style

While John Brown, kitchen manager, says that guests can’t go wrong when selecting any item on the menu, he adds, “The lobster rolls are our signature item.” During a recent unusually warm summer day, Brown shared that many customers enjoyed stepping indoors “to get out of the heat, relax, and enjoy some good food.” Available in two sizes, the giant lobster roll contains a quarter-pound of fresh lobster meat served on a extra-long grilled roll and tossed with house-
made dill mayo or served with warm drawn butter, or a quarterpound of lobster served in a grilled six-inch roll. Both sized rolls are served with kale crunch cole slaw, a pickle, and a choice of one of the following sides: French fries, a clam cake or freshly-made potato chips. Prosciutto Italian “Heavenly” Ham By: Julia Romano
Prosciutto is not an easy word to pronounce, and those not of Italian descent may refer to it as Italian ham; but the process of making prosciutto is much more complex than ham- and the result is worth it! In the Italian language, prosciutto simply means “ham” and is a staple food of Italians, who take its production very seriously. Prosciutto is the past tense of the verb prosciugare, which in Italian means to dry from the inside out. Sweet and delicate, prosciutto is an Italian dry-cured ham that is thinly sliced and served uncooked. The production history of prosciutto originated thousands of years ago at the end of the late Roman Empire in Italy’s area of Norcia (a little town in the Umbria region). The people who were in charge of preparing the ham were called ‘insaccatori’ (sausage-makers), and were actually known as ‘Maestri Norcini’ (masters of Norcia). Prosciutto is made from the leg of a pig or wild boar and the process of curing it can take from nine months up to two years depending on its size and climate of where it is produced. The ham is first cleaned, then heavily salted and left for about two months. During this time the ham is pressed to grain all blood left in the meat. After the two months it is washed several time to remove the the salt and hung in a dark cold room until cured (cooked). 16 ShopInRI
When it is cured and dried, prosciutto is usually hung at room temperature for up to eight months. The process of making this mouthwatering ham may not sound too appealing, but for those who have tasted it, the way it is produced will not matter- it’s sweet, soft, buttery flavor is like no other! Prosciutto di Parma, originating in a city in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, is made from select pork legs and is considered to be the “Prince” of Italian charcuterie (the branch of cooking devoted to prepared meat products). The meat is seasoned and dry-aged to perfection. It’s color is of a deep red and it is wrapped and streaked with flavorful fat. Each paper-thin slice is delicately sweet, yet intensely flavorful. Serving Prosciutto
di Parma in ultra-thin slices is a must to experience the fullness of its flavor and irresistible texture, while the lean part offers your palate a sweet, yet salty, flavor. This magnificent meat is best served on an antipasto platter with creamy cheeses such as fresh mozzarella or burrata, fresh fruit, and floral white wine, and is also delicious when wrapped around grissini (breadsticks) or served with fresh melon in the summertime. Prosciutto crudo San Daniele, originating in a city in the Italian northern region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, is similar to Prosciutto Di Parma but uses a different breed of pigs for its production, has a different salting process, and the air of the region in which it is aged is also different. San Daniele is known to be more aromatic, sweeter, and fattier than Parma. Due to its versatility, San Daniele can be used in many recipes. It pairs very well with melon or figs, or added to a white pizza recipe, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and fresh tomatoes or vegetables. This ham can also be used to make the classical San Daniele billfold: Fold a piece of it in half and add a slice of Montasio cheese and roasted pepper on it. Another idea is to wrap asparagus with the ham and place in a heat-resistant dish greased with butter and mascarpone cheese and then baked in the oven. The Dukcevich family brings Daniel Prosciutto to RI’s little neck of the woods... The Dukcevich family business began in the 1940s, when Stefano and Carolina Dukcevich fled Communist
Yugoslavia to seek refuge in the Northeastern Italian town of Trieste. Looking to support his family, Stefano would ride his bike and sell pork sausages made in his home by his wife Carolina, to area restaurants. After earning enough money to buy a delivery truck, the Dukcevich family moved to a larger facility to expand and continue to do what they were doing best-producing a great quality and variety of delicious meats, including prosciutto. Stefano and Carolina’s youngest son, Vlado Dukcevich, expressed serious interest in following in his parent’s footsteps and began studying meat curing in Parma and Germany. In 1977, Vlado moved his family to Pascoag, RI to start his own Italian meat business, Daniel, Inc. At first it was difficult to tempt Americans with his delicious prosciutto, but Vlado eventually found a way to tempt his customers. His two sons, Stefano and Davide eventually joined their dad and the business is thriving in their Pascoag state of the art facilities. Taking pride in providing the best products possible, Daniel, Inc. recently partnered with the California based Niman Ranch who get their hogs from more than 300 midwestern farmers. These hogs are raised raised sustainably and free of antibiotics or added hormones, and the ham is cured by Daniele who uses only natural Sicilian sea salt. The grill was his first love He is a big believer in simplicity; being creative with the dishes but not taking them too far as to lose the dish by using too many ingredients.
DIRECTIONS: Here is an example of that delicious simplicity for you to make for your family: Ravioli di Polo e Zucca
INGREDIENTS: 12 squash raviolis
8oz grilled chicken - julienned 2 cup of roasted chopped candied butternut squash 2oz chopped walnuts 2 1/2 oz Frangelico (or nut liquer)
Boil raviolis until they float. Combine one tablespoon of butter and a dash of oil in a saucepan. Heat on medium / well size flame. When hot combine 2 cups of roasted chopped candied butternut squash, julienned grilled chicken, and 2 1/2 oz of Frangelico (or nut liquer) Cook and let alcohol burn off. When it begins to caramelize add three cups of heavy cream. Add two pinches of salt and pepper.

When it comes to a complete bubble add the ravioli’s and toss.

are a staple food of the RI culture that are sometimes referred to as “gaggers,” “belly busters,” or “weenies.” Hot weiners that are made at any of the NY System restaurants (the “Original NY System” opened in Providence in the 1920s) are the real deal and made with veal, pork, and beef wieners slathered with mustard, covered in special meat sauce, topped with chopped onions and celery salt, and served in a steamed bun. Ordering one Who has theis best in RI? with all the fixings called donut "all the way." Many say all the way is the only way.
sugar is a RI favorite summer refreshment. Pick up a Del’s on a hot summer day and you will feel instantly cooled by the icy, sweet concoction. The ice in Del’s is much more prominent than in other frozen lemonades; chew on frozen crystals and taste the lemony sweet tang. Some Rhode Islanders drink their Del’s with a pretzel stick, which give the lemonade a salty burst of flavor.
Coffee milk
is a drink that is all RI. It’s not coffee with milk – it’s milk flavored with sweet coffee syrup. It’s so popular that in 1993, coffee milk became the official Rhode Island state drink. Autocrat coffee syrup can be found everywhere!
Grinders are known as “grinders” only in Rhode Island. Some people claim that’s because you need a strong set of “grinders” (teeth) to eat these sandwiches. Filled with “cold cuts” or meats, cheese, vegetables, and condiments, and comparable to what other states refer to as subs, hoagies, heros, or po’boys.
Johnnycakes are the New England equivalent of tortillas. The simplest recipes call for nothing but cornmeal, boiling water, and a little salt. The batter must be fairly thin so that when fried on a hot griddle, the batter is no more than a quarter of an inch thick. No one knows for sure where the name “johnnycakes” came from, but according to one theory, the word derived from “journey cakes” – what early settlers called the cornbread that they ate when they traveled. Stuffies, or stuffed clams, as they may be referred to outside of RI, are a delicious seafood concoction mixed with minced clams and breadcrumbs, and perfectly spiced with different flavors, depending on where they are made. The mixture is then placed back into a quahog shell, baked, and served hot with either cocktail sauce or tabasco sauce to kick them up a notch. Cabinets in places other than RI are where people
store dishes. In Rhode Island, cabinet is the word for milkshake – ice cream, milk, and flavored syrup. People say it’s called a cabinet, because you make it in a blender from the kitchen cabinet. In the rest of New England, a milkshake is called a “frappe” (pronounced “frap”).
Zeppoles are best known as pastry of choice for
St. Joseph’s Day. Most commonly filled with a sweet ricotta cannoli filling, and topped with powdered sugar and a maraschino cherry, there are also a variety of other flavored filling creams offered to suit any taste-all of which can be found at most Italian RI bakeries, or for those who are more old fashioned, lovingly made at home with a traditional Italian family recipe.
Clam Cakes and Chowder
The best clam cakes are light, full of clams, not greasy, and only found in the Ocean State. Chowder is flavorful when red (Manhattan style) with a tomato base, creamy white (New England style), or clear white (RI clam chowder), and all have potatoes, onions, and sweet clams. The ultimate is when clam cakes are combined with clam chowder. Many love to dip the cakes into the chowder to create a flavor and crunch that tantalizes the taste buds and marries the flavors.
Doughboys
are globs of fresh deep fried dough transformed into delightful treats after they are covered in powdered or granulated sugar, or even a combo of sugar and cinnamon if that’s to your taste. These delicious treats are best when devoured straight from the deep fryer while still hot and dripping with oil.

“We want this to become a life cycle brand that not only represents nourishing your body by eating clean, but also nourishing the outside of your body with what you put on it.” That’s the premise behind ALOA, the new company offering a line of organic skincare products from self-described fitness and health junkie Sarah Clifford. The PC alumnus, who graduated in 2006, has undertaken this new venture based on her belief that for healthy skin the products that people use should be safe, clean, and as natural as possible. Clifford co-founded @YourGymGF, an online fitness community in 2012, and participated in events such as fitness retreats. She was known to use clean products on her skin, and when people kept asking what she was using, she decided to start ALOA. When tragedy struck and she lost her brother in a car accident in 2011 at the age of 25, she turned to health and fitness to help get through the hard times and keep her head above water. She took motivation from upbeat people around her to keep a positive mindset.
Sarah Clifford A year later, her mother was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and had to go through intense chemotherapy and radiation treatments. While her mother was also into fitness and is doing great now, Clifford believes the stress of losing her son impacted her mother’s health. Both experiences caused Clifford to re-evaluate her life and realize that life is short. She decided she should do what she really wanted to do, while also making an impact on others. “Those events made me want to share fitness, nutrition, ways of taking care of yourself, but also to do things I really enjoy doing in life that make me happy, but also in turn help other people at the same time,” Clifford said. ALOA began with Aloe Vera Mist, which is Sarah’s personal favorite. It has been part of her regimen for quite sometime and fulfills a cascade of needs when it comes to skincare. Why? You might ask. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to cooler weather, sweaters, apple picking, and pumpkin everything! It’s also the best time to savor the time spent outdoors before colder weather comes. If you haven’t already it’s a great time to focus your fitness routine a couple of times a week getting out of the house. New England is well known for beautiful fall scenery, so why not get out and discover something new. Exercise doesn’t have to monotonous, there are plenty of great places to hike locally. There’s a wonderful book called Weekend Hikes in Rhode Island by Ken Weber that I was introduced to awhile back. He does an excellent job of breaking down each destination with detailed directions, approximate walking time, and the distance. A couple that are great for fall are Napatree Point and Browning Mill Pond- Roaring Brook. These are just a couple of the many that are close by. Always be safe when hiking new areas and do your research prior to heading out. As always never hike close to dark. If hiking new areas isn’t your thing take a walk or run in your neighborhood or local park.

Most dogs are always up for a walk, you can train them to run while you’re training g yourself. Alternate between jogging and walking in 30 second intervals to start off and work your way up from there. Bring water for you and your pet to keep everyone hydrated. However, there are reasons why many people often fail at this because they are ill-informed about seeing their problems and addressing them adequately and correctly. The desire to stay healthy is easily derailed not only by those aforementioned distractions, but the not-so-obvious detours like diet and medications. “People don’t realize that the medication they are taking will either suppress or override the body’s normal function. Over time, the body will adjust to the medication causing the need to increase the dosage to prevent unwanted side effects,” said Dr. Lincoln, who has been practicing chiropractic medicine for 11 years, after also dealing with his own back pain issues for many years.
“In the short term, they feel good, but they are doing more harm in the long run because they are not addressing the cause,” he continued. Dr. Lincoln said that one of the biggest problems facing the in-

What Dr. Lincoln suggests is changing the diet regimen and taking stock of what ails people. He said that reprogramming what people think about what they eat, how much, and how the food travels through their system can have a profound effect on their overall health. “People fail to recognize signs of poor health: fatigue, insomnia, stomach discomfort, indigestion, constipation, loss of appetite, and feeling down. They mistake these symptoms as normal health issues that are easily treated with over-the-counter medications,” he said. Statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveal that 63% of today’s diseases result from lifestyle choices and are considered the leading cause of death. What is located in East Greenwich, has a second location coming in Warwick this fall, and is lots of fun? If you guessed The Riddle Room, you are correct! Now it’s time for you to get a group together and experience it for yourself. When asked what inspired him to open such a business, owner, Byron Delmonico, explained that he had visited an escape room a few years ago with some friends and he absolutely fell in love with the concept. Delmonico always had a creative side to him and a will to entertain and he knew he could improvise on the idea and make it better. This was an opportunity to encompass both his skills and strengths. He loves what he does and you can tell upon meeting him that he wants you to have fun and love it too. So on November 1, 2016, The Riddle Room became a reality and was open to the public. In Rhode Island, you cannot lock anyone in a room, so he branded his business as The Riddle Room. This is also part of what sets his business apart from other escape rooms. Here, you focus on other tasks besides escaping a room. Here, you have to solve riddle, solve a murder, infiltrate the mob, find treasures… You have ONE HOUR… At the East Greenwich location, there are two games to choose from. They are designed for 10 people. If there are a few more people in the group, up to 14 can participate. If there are under 10 people, you may be teamed up with 54 ShopInRI
other people. Riddles have been solved with less but its better and easier with more. Puzzles can be solved simultaneously in a room which helps the team beat the clock. It’s common for groups of friends to be teamed up with new people. They often find themselves making plans to solve a new puzzle together or they end up going out for dinner or drinks in the area after solving a puzzle at Riddle Room. Each game is basically a board game and you are the game piece. Instead of flipping over a card to get a clue, you open a door or a box, or something interactive so you are living the game. At the East Greenwich location, you can choose between a Federal Hill Mafia game, or a cold case theme based at The LADD Center (a sort of serial killer type theme).
All of the games have a Rhode Island Theme. The second location, which will be located at 1150 Bald Hill Road in Warwick, will have seven different games to choose from. It is expected to take up to a year and a half to develop all the games but by Halloween of 2018, Delmonico is hoping to have the Forest Of Fortune game open and ready. Themed as the back wood of Exeter, players will have to find treasure and their missing friend. Other games that are being developed are a Haunted Newport Mansion game, a submarine
themed game. Updates on new games will be listed on the Riddle Room website and on Facebook. Not only will the Warwick location have more rooms, but there will also be a large room for conferences, birthday parties, holiday parties, or any large group. Guests can bring whatever food and beverages they’d like and participate in the fun games that Delmonico and his team are putting together. Vintage to Vogue is heading back to Frenchtown Road By Jenn Lombari Imagine going to a dinner event and you are wearing the most unique piece of jewelry or handbag or pair of shoes. After all, these items aren’t being sold at the mall or the boutique down the street. No one ever wants to show up wearing the same thing as someone else. Shopping at upscale resale shops is a sure way to avoid that catastrophe. Consignors is “resale at a fraction of retail’”. Maybe you’re a “fashionista”, a collector, or someone who has a quirky style and appreciates unique pieces that aren’t available everywhere? Not only are vintage items made better, many of the styles are timeless or have come back into fashion. Lynda Peters opened the door to Consignors in 2004. Originally located at 95 Frenchtown Road for six years, she later moved to Main Street where she’s been for eight years. In October of 2018, Peters will be moving her store back to the original location on Frenchtown Road and will continue to provide her customers with an eclectic selection and quality

Real estate had been her focus for over 40 years and still practices part time, but around the time her mother passed away, she was inspired to open a high end resale consignment shop. Consignment pieces are priced together between the owner and Peters. She knows the trends and what will sell and for how much. If she believes she can sell it, she’ll take it into her inventory. Life is short and we all need to be as happy as we can while we are healthy and able. Don’t just read the following quotes, live by them!
Life isn’t always fair, but you are still living. When in doubt, always take the next small step. You won’t know unless you try. Life is too short to waste time hating someone. Holding onto anger only keeps you from being truly happy and isn’t hurting anyone but you. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and family will. Stay in touch and put more energy into the ones who love you. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. Opinions are meant to be different. A: Many people find it difficult to remember the differences between these two types of life insurance. It helps to step back and think about the three major variables to consider when it comes to life insurance: the death benefit, the premium and the length of time the policy will be in force, or term. With whole life, your policy lasts your whole life until you pass away, as long as the policy is in force at the time of your passing. In most cases, the premiums are level throughout the lifetime of the policy. Term policies, on the other hand, are only in effect until the term period ends. Haunted Labyrinth has always been 100% volunteer run. Proceeds go toward the Diocese of Providence Youth Program, Rejoice In Hope. Every year is a different layout and theme. The rooms change, the path through the haunted house changes, and while many of the same volunteers participate every year, there is always new talent hiding in the dark. From actors, to security, concession stands, layout designers, carpenters, graphics and marketing, an average of one hundred volunteers are involved in the production process each year. Planning and mapping out the Haunted Labyrinth starts in February and lasts until June, and production starts in July and ends just before opening night at the end of September. The theme is chosen in March, but the staff is very good at keeping secrets. They pick a theme and go room by room to decide what will be needed for their building budget. Proceeds from the previous year are used for lumber and whatever else is needed for the building project. About 20 adults are involved in this stage and towards the end, students from grades 8-12 can volunteer to piece it all together. And a bonus is that they receive service hours for their time and effort. Information on how to volunteer is on the Haunted Labyrinth website. Building coordinator, Joe Fazio, has been on board since 2002. He explained, “We are very economical when we plan and build. We want as much money as possible to go to the Diocese.” After planning, a WISHLIST is made for items they will need for props, and is posted in select places online and out in the local areas. This doesn’t mean that they will come and clean out your basement or attic; but, if you have furniture that they need, a volunteer will
gladly come pick it up. Sections of the Haunted Labyrinth are stored away and repainted each year for the new theme. The walls are folded up and props are taken apart and reused in new settings. The outside of the building is also stored and reused. Each year, the outside of the building is transformed into an old Victorian mansion based on the vision of Leonard Pickles. Are you familiar with the Tower Of Terror in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studio’s Theme Park? He designed that too. In the past, he even helped with mapping of the Labyrinth. The staff and thought process has also evolved over the years. They are proud to say that if an idea comes along that seems too difficult to accomplish, they make an extra effort to ensure that it gets done. They never sway from anything that may appear to be impossible to get done. These are the types of decisions that result in the best possible outcome. And, being the largest indoor attraction has its benefits. If it rains, the staff is able to move the line into t he cafeteria area below the haunted house, so its success is not dependent on the weather. Saturday nights, DJ Mikey B provides entertainment for people waiting in line inside or outside for a Haunted House Party. Tickets are kept affordable at only $12 for any night. Nate Cozzolino: Songwriter & Mad-Captain By Jenn Lombari
For his whole life, his family had encouraged him to sing and play guitar; it was a constant struggle of resistance until a trip to Japan boosted his confidence and a short stay at a hippie commune sealed the deal. At 42 years old, Nate Cozzolino never expected to be on stage almost every night of the week, but that’s exactly what he’s doing. Here is his story. Nate has made it his job to connect people through song. He considers his style “NEO POST-SYNCRETIC.” He explains that he takes a style that other bands have blended together (ie., a band who may have blended ska, reggae, and soul, blended with the style of a band that may have blended rock, blues, and hip hop). Neo Post-Syncretic could best be described as a mix of two other mixes; one that contains elements of both parent mixes and yet manifests as a distinct style in its own right. Basically, Nate’s influences range widely and he expresses them all through the songs he writes. It took him a long time to find his style. His music is laid back and soulful. From bars and breweries, to parks and festivals, Nate’s music can easily be accepted into any environment and has people grooving and singing along quickly; he even puts his own spin on some wellknown songs that he feels passionate about. “I never thought I’d be a musician,” Nate said with a laugh. He started playing flute at a young age and quit. All the cool people played guitar! So at 15 years old, his dad bought him a guitar, but the technique didn’t come easy to him, so it just sat in the corner collecting dust while he took on more of an introverted visual art lifestyle. He had visited Europe with his family as a kid and wanted to experience a new part of the world. His obsession 82 ShopInRI 82ShopInRI ShopInRI 82 82 ShopInRI
with certain parts of Japanese culture landed him in Japan at 18 years old. The friends he made there were very encouraging and pushed for their American friend to get on stage. Although he had no experience, he was given enough encouragement to sing in front of crowds and loved it. He became comfortable with it and when he came back the US with his new found confidence, his friends gave it to him straight and basically told him he was terrible-let’s call it constructive criticism. A few years later, someone put a guitar in his hands and said, “If you can play two chords then you can play a song.” Simple enough, right? So Nate took that advice, practiced, and found his style. He was now an emerging songwriter and performer. While working at The Spot Underground, all of his coworkers and friends were in bands, and they were GOOD. Nate started as a solo performer, but he loved the idea of playing in a band with other musicians and his friends. He soon found that it was hard to keep a lineup together. It either wasn’t the right chemistry amongst band members or they just didn’t have enough time to dedicate to the music. It was about seven years ago at The Spot Underground where he also started his weekly event, MadCap Monday. He describes MadCap as the place he wanted to hang out as a kid, but it didn’t exist; where artists of all sorts came together to play, sing, show their art, and support one another. It was recklessly creative and artsy, and within that community, he found his place. MadCap continues weekly at Dusk in Providence, and there are also special MadCap events that travel to other
venues throughout RI, sometimes, Massachusetts, and most recently, Nate has made a sort of musical bridge and brought his MadCap crowd to Vermont. Follow MadCap on Facebook for events information and attend one yourself. Everyone is welcome. MadCap is a family. Everything has been a learning experience up until this point and it will continue that way. Nate has learned to hold the attention of an audience on his own as a solo performer, but he’s also learned to enjoy being the front man for his band, Nate Cozzolino and the Lost Arts. Playing with so many different musicians has definitely contributed to him becoming a better songwriter. There have been versions of the band where everyone contributed to the song writing and that worked for a period of time. As he became a better songwriter, he also learned how to balance power in the band. Everyone’s opinions matter, but in the end, the songs are still his and they are coming from his own heart and soul. Nate said, “I believe that things happen the way they are supposed to happen. The universe brought us all together at the right time.” He went on to explain that his current band lineup is the one that has stayed together the longest. The band consists of Nate on guitar and vocals, Corey Silva on lead guitar and backup vocals, Luc Mailloux on bass and backup vocals, and Chris Goyer on drums. Nate Cozzolino and The Lost Arts is currently working on a studio album that is expected to be released in the fall of 2018. According to Nate, he’s been writing this album his whole life. It’s a labor of love. The album will be nine songs total. There are other songs written, but those optimistically will have a home on the next album. Butchie Oil is a company based on compassion, empathy, and old school family values. This Pawtucket based home heating oil company was started in 2016 out of the desire to help people. Going into their third winter, owners Renee George and Troy Sankey are preparing for the cold winter months ahead and making sure their customers are safe, warm, and happy. Troy was a truck driver and Renee had been in the medical billing field for over 20 years. In medical billing, Renee enjoyed helping people who were struggling, navigate through their bills and insurances. At the end of the day it felt good to have helped someone who was already sick and worried be at ease. Eventually, they both grew tired of working for other people, they wanted to start their own business and work for themselves. They were also tired of spending outrageous prices on home heating oil every winter for their own home. Both familiar with the stress and struggles, they aimed to start a business that understood the needs of people and promised to do their best to accommodate everyone in every situation.

DRIVEN TO SUCCEED Tasca’s legacy continues to grow. New location opens in Johnston By Mark Berger Photos: Allyson Barth / Crescent Moon Photography There are few people living in this region who do not know the name “Tasca.” The Tasca name is synonymous with automobiles, racing, and the multi-generational, family owned business which has spanned over 75 years. From Bob Tasca, Sr. developing the first car leasing program in the country, to their innovative approaches for enhancing customer service, the Tasca name signifies quality, longevity, and customer satisfaction.
With the recent purchase of their newest locations on 1660 and 1667 Hartford Ave. in Johnston, the campus features Kia, Chrysler, Dodge Ram, Jeep, and Fiat brands. “While the facility continues to offer many of our typical amenities such as a drive-in service write up area, a spacious showroom, and a friendly staff, Tasca also offers decades of dedicated service and a commitment to customer satisfaction,” said Carl Tasca, Jr, grandson of the company founder and member of the third generation of the Tasca family. “Many people know the Tasca family commitment, ‘You Will Be Satisfied,’ and we try every day to live up to our grandfather’s high standards,” Tasca said. “We are four generations of a family dedicated to sales, service, integrity, and the overall experience of our customers either buying
or leasing a vehicle. This is what my family knows. We didn’t go to school to become accountants, doctors, or anything else. All of us were shown the family business from a very young age.” The Johnston location is the second largest campus they own, the first being the Pontiac Avenue in Cranston location, which is the largest. Tasca stated, “The Cranston location is one of the largest car dealerships in the country. It’s funny to think of it in those terms,” noting that when his family initially bought the property, they figured they had too much space. Turned out they were not even close. When their company started growing, the need for additional space became an instant priority, so much so that when land near the facility became available, they pounced on it. Now they have the inventory and the volume to ensure the land does not stay dormant. They currently have locations in Rhode Island (Cranston, Johnston, Woonsocket, and Westerly) Massachusetts (Seekonk), and Connecticut (Berlin). Despite the growth, Carl Tasca said that he is looks forward to the next opportunity for growing the family business, while providing customers with the same quality and commitment to service they have come to expect. Tasca and his family recognize the high goals past generations

have set for them and work towards exceeding those goals every day. Tasca’s philosophy is about establishing good relationships with customers and having that key interaction with them. He noted that most people have already done their homework on-line and know within a few hundred dollars what the car they want is worth. What he strives to do is to treat all of the customers with respect and give them a reason to come back. “The industry is changing, and in about 20 years, only the really good (dealerships) are going to survive,” Tasca stated. “It comes down to having good people skills and having a knowledgeable staff who understand and deliver based on our philosophy. No matter how large a business we become, I always want to be proud of how well we treat our customers.” In regards to their staff, many of their employees have been with the Tasca Family for decades. Two of their general managers have been there for many years, as well. He mentioned Chrysler General Manager Stephen Lawrence, who has been with the family for 15 years and Alyssa DiChiara, Kia General Manager, who has been there for six years, as two examples. Many of their staffers who worked in Cranston have moved to the Johnston location. “That shows the level of commitment that has made the
company so successful,” Tasca stressed. “It comes from years of handing down the lessons learned for more than seven decades.” “We are very happy to have gained a great team of men and women at both stores,” Tasca said. “The positive attitude and enthusiasm of the new team has been great. I am blessed to work every day with my father, Carl, Sr. and my two uncles, Bob, Jr. and Dave, Sr. They have been in the business since they were kids, so who better to go to for advice and guidance? I also get to come to work with my cousins, Bob, Michael, David, and Jaime every day to grow our business and satisfy our customers.
