Known in the past as the premiere Honeymoon destination, this geological wonder is not only one of most popular tourist attractions in the state of New York, but also functions as one of the major power providers to the state itself.

Comprised of three waterfalls — American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls — Niagara Falls water stems from the upper Great Lakes and the river is estimated to be 12,000 years old. The wonder of the falls has intrigued many and has prompted daredevils to “conquer” the falls in various contraptions from wooden barrels to rubber balls.

Niagara Falls consists of two waterfalls on the Niagara River, which marks the border between New York and Ontario, Canada: the American Falls, located on the American side of the border, and the Canadian or Horseshoe Falls located on the Canadian side. To the right of the American Falls is a smaller waterfall that has been separated from the American Falls by natural forces, which is usually called Bridal Veil Falls.

It is estimated that 12,000 years ago when the falls were formed, the edge of the falls was as much as seven miles further down river than it is today. Until the 1950s, when the flow of water began to be controlled, the brink of the falls moved backward an estimated three feet every year because of erosion.

The river below Niagara Falls averages 170 feet deep. Daredevils who go over the falls usually hit the bottom of the river before popping back to the surface.

Mixed Bean Minestrone By: Chef Adam Baffoni

Ingredients: - 1 white onion, diced - 2lb. mixed dried beans, soaked and drained - 3 cloves garlic, roughly chopped - 1 large sprig rosemary - 1lb. kale, roughly chopped - 2 medium yellow squash, sliced - Olive oil, as needed - Salt and pepper, as needed

Minestrone, quite simply is a soup of beans and vegetables, but good minestrone soup is so much more. Good minestrone is warmth on the first cold day of the year. It is the essence of simple, hearty cold weather food. This is one of those essential recipes that everyone should have, especially considering how easy and cheap it is to make. A good minestrone can be made with one type of bean, or as many as you can get your hands on. Similarly, it can be made with any amount and variety of vegetables; and I rarely ever make two batches of minestrone the same. It is important to use dried beans instead of canned, because dried beans will yield a much more flavorful and rich broth. If you’re not sure what type of beans you’d like to use, check your local grocery store and chances are you’ll be able to find a pre mixed blend of dried beans that will be perfect for making soup. The day before making this recipe, put the beans in a large container and cover them by about two inches of cold water. Next, let them sit out overnight to soak.

Directions In a large pot, heat a few tablespoons of olive oil over medium low heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened. Remove the pot from the heat and add the beans, garlic and rosemary. Add enough water to cover the beans by about two inches.

Return to the stove over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Allow the beans to simmer for 1-2 hours, until almost completely tender. Once the beans begin to become tender, add the squash, season with salt and pepper and continue to simmer until the beans are tender and the broth has thickened. Add the kale and cook for five minutes more, until the kale has wilted. Serve with a loaf of fresh Italian bread for dipping.

CHEPACHET – Patrons who enjoy fine dining mixed with a dose of the paranormal have been asking for years if the popular local eatery the Tavern on Main is truly haunted.

According to Owner/Chef David Lumnah, restaurant guests have reported seeing ghosts, orbs and other mysterious phenomena in the former stagecoach tavern that was built in 1800, and once served as a stop on the busy Worcester to Providence stagecoach route.

“It’s got a lot of history,” says Lumnah, noting that the historic building has served as a tavern, dance hall, inn, and restaurant, at various times during the past two centuries.

GARDEN TOMATO CONSOMME Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails The definition of a consommé is: "a clear soup made with concentrated stock”. I might add "mindblowing" to that sentence, especially with this recipe.

The key to success-and this is crucial-is to use absolutely garden-fresh, inseason ingredients.

Ingredients:

4 1/2 lbs. fresh garden tomatoes (my favorite is the heirloom: Brandywine) 1 large bunch of fresh basil, leaves and stems 1 two-inch piece of fresh horseradish, peeled 1 clove of garlic, peeled 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar (I use Alessi) 2 oz. vodka (I use Tito's) Sea salt and pepperk.

Remove the core of the tomatoes, but leave everything else, including seeds and skin.

Put all the tomatoes, basil, horseradish, garlic, vinegar and vodka in a blender or food processor. You might need to do this in batches if your equipment can't handle it all.

Process until you get a texture of slush.

Line a mixing bowl with a double layer of cheesecloth and pour the tomato slush mixture into it. Gather up the corners of the cheesecloth carefully, and tie them securely so you can lift the bundle up by the knot. Hang the bundle from a hook over a clean bowl in the fridge so that it catches the liquid that drips out; and leave the whole thing in the fridge overnight. The liquid that drips out will be clear. (You can place an optional slice of beet in the bowl to add color, but I choose not to because I think it changes the flavor.)

To serve, chill bowls (or in this case: the sipping glasses) in the fridge. When ready to serve, ladle out the consommé and garnish with a tiny basil leaf. A drop of excellent quality olive oil is optional.

Sweet Potato Marble Cake

Autumn is now in our path and what better way to enjoy the season than baking something fall inspired? There are plenty of pumpkin recipes out there, so a great alternative is using sweet potatoes instead of pumpkin. Not only are sweet potatoes being grown locally now, but they are also high in beta carotene, vitamins E and C, and potassium. They are also known as one of the super foods, and if eaten with the skin still attached, they are an excellent source of fiber. And once you pair this delicious vegetable with chocolate, like anything else, it becomes even more irresistible. Plus, because the texture of a sw eet potatoes is thick and creamy, they makes just about anything super moist.

Ingredients: (Yields 8 Potatoes)

4 oz. semisweet chocolate 1 tsp. chocolate extract (If preferred, vanilla can work instead of chocolate.)

3 cups flour 1 ½ cups sugar 2 tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp. ground cloves ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. salt

Place chocolate and chocolate extract in a small saucepan; stir until smooth and set aside.

Sift together all dry ingredients and set aside. In a large bowl, beat the sweet potatoes, oil and maple syrup together, then add dry ingredients and mix well.

Put one third of the mixture in another bowl and stir in the melted chocolate. Alternate the batters as you would with a marble cake.

Cut through the two batters with a knife to make a slight swirl.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 65-75 minutes, or until the tester comes out dry.

Let the cake cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Pizzeria Romana

With Osteria Toscana and Pizzeria Romana moving into Johnston’s Centre at Cherry Hill, lifelong chef and visionary restaurateur, Chef Luciano Canova, has expanded his family of eateries into an area that can appreciate fine Italian cuisine.

“Everyone makes Italian food a little differently,” Luciano explained. “If you eat escargot in France, that is how it is all over France. You eat chicken Cacciatore in Rome it tastes one way; in Naples, it tastes another way, and in Bologna, it tastes another way. That’s the beauty of Italian cuisine; we all have our home creation. This menu is my home creation.”

“The menu is not done by a computer,” Luciano said.

“It’s done from experience that I’ve gained from traveling all over the world and picking the best food I can find and bringing it to my restaurants.”

“Carbonara is Carbonara,” Luciano said rhetorically.

“But a chef who wants to make Carbonara the right way, he doesn’t go to the computer, he goes to Amatrice – that’s where the Carbonara comes from. That’s not too far from where I come from.”

quality ingredients. Born in 1949, outside Rome, on a true self-sustained family farm, Luciano learned to cook from relatives.

“My father was a shepherd,” Luciano explained. “When I was 9, 10 years old, I used to help my dad with the cheeses. We lived on a farm; we had everything. My mother only bought the sugar and the salt. Everything else we used to produce on this farm – we had chicken, duck, pig, a nice garden; we had everything.”

This from-the-farm menu and his mother’s bountiful cooking inspired a passion for food that has sustained and evolved. At 16 years old, Luciano decided to go to the Culinary Institute of Italy to hone his techniques. After graduating in 1968, he went on to Switzerland and Germany. His first restaurant in the U.S. was Luciano’s in Wrentham, Mass., which opened in 1991.

According to U.S. Census Bureau 2015 numbers, Johnston – with 49.5 percent – is the second most Italian-American community in the U.S., but whatever your ancestry, Luciano’s fare can stand the test of hungry palates and those who routinely clear plates. The 100-seat Osteria Toscana has been open since last October, a sit-down dining experience with low music, full bar, signature cocktails and an extensive menu of Italian entrees. The adjoined Pizzeria Romana gives

a variety of unique pizza options. Luciano buys from local farms where he can, and uses the finest imports, like olive oil and cold cuts for sandwiches.

“The oven is made under our specifications,” Luciano said.

“It’s like a racecar; you have to make it the way you want it.

It’s not a showpiece; it just makes a good pizza.”

Among a long list, are Pizzeria Romana (white pizza with mozzarella, prosciutto and arugula, topped with a drizzle of balsamic nectar), or Pizza Bianca (sliced chicken, fresh broccoli florets & mozzarella cheese with a homemade cream sauce). Pizzeria Romana offers calzones, subs, hot plates liked baked stuffed shells and broccoli rabe and sausage, personalized pizzas, and croccantini, or crunchy pizza, which Luciano describes as a very thin pizza, soft on the top that crackles on the bottom. Get a soup, salad, Bulky roll sandwich combination for 6.95. There’s also a distinct section for thick crust, square Sicilian style pizza, crafted with focaccia bread.

At the Osteria Toscana, one can dine on everything from antipasto, salads and soups to a robust list of entrees with fish, pasta, chicken, veal, pork and more. Pastas – from spaghetti, fettuccine, rigatoni to pinci and gnocchi – are all made in the kitchen. In addition to the dining menu, Osteria Toscana offers a Sunday breakfast/brunch/lunch, and a Tuscan Feast.

They give proportions intended for customers to take some home for the next day.

The Johnston location is just one of Luciano’s many ventures in RI. Trattoria Romana opened at 3 Wake Robin Rd. in Lincoln in 2007; Pizzeria Romana and Trattoria Express have since joined. Trattoria Romana South, at 71 South County Commons Way in South Kingstown, was the second to open.

Owner, John Picerne, opened this classic restaurant in the summer of 2007. Eleven Forty Nine was set to have a metropolitan feel situated in the suburbs. For the past three years, Nick Dadona has been the executive chef and I sat down with him recently to find out what makes this upscale, yet casual restaurant one of the top restaurants in Rhode Island. Nick had many answers but he began with praising the staff. “Along with the quality of food, the employees treat each guest as if they’ve come to their home for dinner. It’s a craft. Each employee cares about the guests, and each plays a different role in ensuring that the guests feel special”. Nick didn’t brag about the preparation, presentation, or even the taste of the food, which he could have justifiably done; rather, he immediately spoke of the service and professionalism provided by the staff. As far as the delicious food, Nick went on to say that consistency and quality is key to creating an ultimate dining experience; and that is what Eleven Forty Nine strives to deliver to each guest. The menu is best described as contemporary American cuisine.

As executive chef, the most important thing to Nick is that he uses all local vendors, from local bakeries for freshly baked bread, to local farms for the produce, and seafood from the northeast coast. By using local vendors, Eleven Forty Nine is not only supporting the local economy, they are ensuring you are putting only the freshest of ingredients into your body. Every dish from entree to dessert is homemade.

The menu changes bi-annually to provide seasonal twists for both food and beverages. I asked Nick if he had a favorite dish he prepared, and if he had a favorite dish he liked to eat. For preparation, Nick said he loves to create Beef Wellington. The words he used when describing this dish were accomplishment, challenging and classic. The Beef Wellington appears as a special from time to time throughout the year. For taste, Nick loves the Spanish dish, Paella, classic calamari, and any of their local seafood.

Eleven Forty Nine in Seekonk is open for private events, and will be opening for a Sunday breakfast buffet in the fall of 2016.

Following are some facts you should know about Eleven Forty Nine: They offer a ladies only wine divas program once a month (excludes December), which is $ 59.95 per person, and includes four food courses and five glasses of wine, along with gratuity and tax.

They also offer a prime rib dinner special on Tuesday evenings for $ 24.95 per person, and also have ½ off on bottles of wine on Tuesdays.

You may have seen Ashley at numerous events around the state looking glamorous and fresh, and always in a stand out ensemble. Yet, many don’t really know what she does. The humble Erling has been in an influential position for years, but always remained behind the scenes, and modest about the power position she holds.

She is the executive producer of the morning lifestyle show, The Rhode Show on WPRI, Channel 12. She has been the producer, executive producer since its inception in 2009. I am honored to have her be showcased as my first Style Profile interview.

How would you describe your personal style?

I would say that I am inspired by a classic influence with an edge.

Skewing on the side of trendy, I always like to keep current with the seasonal looks that come off the runway. The fall months are when I thrive, and I love to express my edgy take on everyday style.

What are 3 things in your closet that you could not live without?

My black leather motorcycle jacket from Zara; it’s my armor!

My ripped Paige denim jeans; they make me feel slim! My black leather pleated mini skirt from Nordstrom; it adds the perfect femininity, while also being fierce. And my gold hoops! It’s the Jennifer Lopez in me!

What part of your body do you like to show off?

My legs. I think I have good legs, and I like to wear skirts to show them off. I also like to show them off in skinny jeans! I am a very

modest person, but I am thankful to have nice legs; and I think if women love a part of their body they should show it off proudly!

Where are your favorite places to shop?

Zara is perfect for progressive on trend items. Nordstrom has great basics that I can wear over and over again; T.J. Maxx, for everything else. I love digging through the racks while drinking my Dunkin Donuts iced coffee on the weekends; it’s my guilty pleasure!

What are your splurge vs. steal items?

Splurge on jeans! There is no price you can put on the perfect, fitting pair of jeans that make you feel good. Jeans are a tough fit sometimes; so when you find the pair that hugs all those right curves, buy them! Jeans also last forever. Let’s just say most of my favorite jeans outlast my relationships! Ha! Save money on trendy items.

I am such a bargain shopper by nature, so for anything that is very trendy and for which I will tire of after a season, I will normally not break the bank.

Do you feel as though accessories can make an outfit?

Absolutely! I grew up wearing a uniform, so accessories became important to me. Accessorizing was a way to express my individual style in a sea of plaid!

Now, I always find myself seeking out the best accessories to make a basic outfit pop and stand out.

Just like changing your lip color from day to night, accessories are very much the same to your ensembles!

How has your job as the executive producer of the Rhode Show influenced your style? Or has your style influenced the Rhode Show?

I’m lucky that I have a job where I can really express my style.

We don’t have a traditional “corporate” work environment so I can wear things like jeans and trendy tops. I like it because it gives me a chance to get feedback, especially on the occasions when I am on camera; those can be very humbling! Something that you think looks great in person can be not so flattering on camera.

What was your most embarrassing fashion moment?

Oh gosh, I don’t think I could ever pick just one! I do like to take risks, so sometimes I will look back at pictures from events and be like, “what was I thinking”??

There are definitely times where I was trying too hard, but at least I was trying!

What fashion advice would you have given your younger self?

Don’t be afraid to have your own style. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve really grown into my own personal style, and I love that!

Some of the things I had worn as a teen and in my early 20s are things I could never imagine wearing now. But that’s the beauty of fashion; it’s always changing, or something “old” is “new” again. BTW- I am so excited that chokers are back!

I recently watched a special on CBS about elderly men and women breaking world records for running (against those within their age group). I was so inspired because these men and women were well into their 80s and 90s.

One women ran a marathon, 26.2 miles; she’s 91.

Another gentleman highlighted in the CBS special didn’t start running until he was 55. He’s now in his 90s and he’s still running.

I have always believed that our bodies are meant to move. I understand that as we age we may be slower, or we may have a physical limitation; but I also believe that there are people who use age as an excuse to be idle. I always said, “As long as God gives me the ability to move my arms and legs, I will be 50 ShopInRI

moving them.” Like anything else in life, it’s never too late to start.

Physical activity and exercise are important to both the physical and mental health of everyone, including older adults. Staying physically active and exercising on a regular basis can produce long-term health benefits, and even improve health for some older people who may have

chronic diseases and disabilities.

That’s why health experts say that older adults should aim to be as active as possible! Even moderate exercise and physical activity can improve the health of people who are frail, or who have conditions that accompany aging.

If you start exercising or being physically active at a younger age, it helps you stay strong and fit enough

to keep doing the things you like to do as you get older; but again, it’s never too late to start. When you exercise or make physical activity a regular part of your life, it not only improves your health, it also helps you maintain your independence as you age. Independence is one of the things a lot of elderly people lose, which can lead to depression and illness. Having independence can make all the difference in one’s life.

A lot of older people are of the mindset that they can’t exercise because it will be too difficult.

They don’t feel strong enough. Others are reluctant to exercise because they fear they will get hurt and it will harm them in some way. Lack of movement, not age, is more harmful than being active. It’s the stagnant, inactive people that end up at the doctors, on medications, or in hospitals.

Being active can only improve one’s health and mind. To me, the bigger risk is being inactive. You have more to lose by being inactive than you do by engaging in physical activity or exercise.

Scientists have found that diseases can be delayed, or even prevented for those that are physically active and exercising regularly. In some cases, exercise is a big part of treatment for

many chronic conditions. For example, studies show that people with arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes benefit from regular exercise. It’s been proven time and time again that exercise helps more than medication for those with high blood pressure, balance problems, or difficulty walking.

Moderate physical activity and exercise can help manage stress and improve one’s mood. Being active on a regular basis has also proven to help fight depression.

Studies also suggest that exercise can improve or maintain some aspects of cognitive function, such as your ability to shift quickly between tasks, plan an activity, and ignore irrelevant information. We all need that!

Summary for everyone of all ages: Regular exercise improves the following:

Immune Function A healthy, strong body fights off infection and sickness more easily and more quickly. Illness will take less of a toll on the body if the person exercises regularly.

Cardio-Respiratory and Cardiovascular Function Frequent physical activity lowers the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure. Cardio exercise is the only way to work the heart muscle.

We lift weights to build muscle and protect our bones.

As we age, our bones become more fragile; therefore, we need to protect them.

Gastrointestinal Function Regular exercise helps boost the metabolism, promotes the efficient elimination of waste, and greatly helps with the digestive system.

Chronic Conditions and Cancer Physical activity lowers the risk of serious conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, and colon cancer, to name just a few. It also helps in the management of high cholesterol and arthritis pain.

Did you know that those fun size candies are loaded with calories? Plus, we all know we can’t eat just one. So then the calories continue to add up!

Read on for some tips to burn off that Halloween candy from your child’s trick or treat bag.

•Double your daily steps. This will help you burn a little extra that day so that fun size candy you eat won’t cause too much damage; and the outcome of eating it, will be well worth the extra effort.

•Get to a spin class. Burning those calories while riding a stationary bike is almost worth it! You ride, ride, ride and although you are stationary, the burn of calories can be quite high, depending on the person.

•Do some outdoor chores, such as rake leaves. This gets the body moving and core temperature up. Hey, let’s face it; it’s better than sitting on the couch!

•Push a little harder in your workout. Giving 110% will allow you to sweat a little bit more than normal!

•Drink lots of water. Water will help flush out your body and some of the damage caused by all of that candy.

How To Choose The Perfect Name For Your Pet SusanGazerro

Most, not all, but most adults like their occasional cocktail. Lots of people love dogs. Well, I was having fun one day while teaching a spin class saying, “Alcohol beverages are cute names for dogs.� We were having so much fun with it, one of the students suggested I make it part of my next pet article. I loved the idea! I sat down and wrote down a bunch of dog breeds, then tried to come up with a matching beverage that would best suit the breed. If it was a strong breed, I needed a strong beverage. If it was a regal breed, I needed a royal name.

Of course, if it was a toy dog, I needed a light or fruity beverage. With the help of my 8am Saturday spinners, and a couple of dear friends, here are the suggestions I came up with:

How does one go about choosing a name? Naming a dog, or any pet for that matter, can be as thought intensive as naming a child. Just writing this article was intense as I kept over thinking and changing the names.

Consider these suggestions when naming your pet:

Names often reflect the breed and personality of your pet. Do not name your pet right away. Observe their actions for a couple of days. Are they an attention seeker, are they full of mischief, do they cuddle, are they always excited, etc.? If your pet is always seeking to be the center of attention, you might want a name like King or Star. Regardless of their personality, short and easy, recognizable names work best in getting your pet to be responsive.

Dogs respond and understand one word commands; so their name should also be just one word. Don’t choose a name that is too long or difficult to pronounce. Too long of a name will only confuse the dog. Avoid names that sound like commands. Names like “Joe” sound like “no”, which can cause confusion for the dog. After you choose a name for your dog, make sure you use it often so he can learn it more quickly. Choose a name that not only fits your dog, but a name you like because remember; this is going to be a 10 to 15 year commitment.

Don’t raise your voice every time you call him, and try to use his name in positive, playful settings, such as when you feed him, play with him, or pet him. Although I say do not raise your voice, it is best to have a stern, confident voice, as this is how you will establish yourself as the leader. Remember, even the alpha dog wants and needs a leader.

Arthur and Patricia Ryan Center for Business Studies at Providence College Set to Open in January 2017

Ryan earned a mathematics degree from PC in 1963 and was awarded an honorary doctor of business administration degree in 1990. “I look forward to the day — very soon — when our students and faculty have access to a business facility that matches their collective intellect, passion, and commitment to the ideals of Providence College,” said Ryan.

Providence College will start off 2017 with a major, historic gift for the Business School.

And who are the generous contributors?

Arthur and Patricia Ryan are known as Platinum Torchbearers in the 1917 Society, a designation reserved for those who have donated more than $1 million to Providence College. In 2005, the Ryans pledged $1 million for construction of the Smith Center for the Arts, where the Ryan Concert Hall is named for them. Earlier, they established the Arthur F. Ryan Family Scholarship Fund, which allows needy students from Suffolk County, N.Y., where Arthur Ryan grew up, to study business at Providence College.

As a prominent alumnus, Arthur Ryan and his wife, Patricia have now made a new project possible by generously donating another $5 million to create a stateof-the-art home for the Providence College School of Business. With their gift, Dorr Hall, a former residence hall, will be the center of a new structure to be named the Arthur and Patricia Ryan Center for Business Studies.

DiMeo Construction broke ground for the new home of the Providence College School of Business in October 2015. The former Dorr Hall will house faculty offices and serve as the business school’s operational end. The new addition will also include a large atrium and eight teaching areas, including a finance lab and two computer labs.

The lead gift from the Ryans is part of the $140 million fundraising campaign, Our Moment: The Next Century Campaign for Providence College, which launched in October and has already raised more than $112 million.

College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ‘80 said the pledge is indicative of the Ryans’ lifelong commitment to philanthropy. “Arthur Ryan is one of the most successful businessmen who ever came out of PC,” said Father Shanley.

“He learned that business is not just about making money, but also about giving back to the community. Shanley said that the new building’s distinctive look and prominent location at the college’s main entrance will make a statement about the liberal arts college’s emphasis on business education.

Additionally, Art and Pat have been benefactors to countless projects, and it really was important to have this named in their honor so that people will remember them.

Set to open in January of 2017, the Arthur and Patricia Ryan Center for Business Studies is set to be a 64,000-squarefoot, four-story structure, designed by Symmes Maini & McKee Associates of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and will also include a glass atrium entrance, classrooms, conference rooms, computer labs, collaboration rooms, interview suites, a student café, an outdoor terrace, lounge space, and a food service area with a take –out window, among other features.

October is Financial Planning Month. And now that you know it’s Financial Planning Month (just in case you didn’t know before), why not take the opportunity to determine if you’re on the right path toward meeting your financial goals?

Consider taking these steps: Identify your goals. To know if you’re making progress toward your goals, you first have to identify them.

Of course, you’ll have a variety of goals in life, such as helping pay for your children’s college educations.

More than likely, though, your most important longterm financial goal is to build enough resources to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. But we all have different ideas for how we want to spend our retirement years. Some of us may want to stay close to home, volunteering and pursuing our hobbies, while others want to visit the vineyards of Bordeaux or explore the pyramids of Egypt. So, name your goals and, as much as possible, put a price tag on them. Once you know about how much your retirement is going to cost, you can create an investment strategy that may ultimately provide you with the income you will need.

Don’t underestimate your cost of living. Even after you’ve identified some of your retirement goals, and estimated their costs, you still haven’t developed a complete picture of your future cost of living. You also need to take into account other potential major expenses, such as health care. Once you’re 65, you’ll get Medicare, but that won’t cover all your medical costs – and it might cover only a tiny portion of those expenses connected with long-term care, such as a nursing home stay or services provided by a home health aide.

A financial professional can help you explore specific methods of dealing with these types of long-term care costs.

Locate “gaps” – and work to fill them. After you’ve had your investment strategy in place for a while, you may see that some “gaps” exist. Is your portfolio not growing as fast as it should to help you reach your goals?

Pharmacy & Soda Fountain in 2016??

Just a short time ago, May 2, 2016 to be exact, Green Line Apothecary came to fruition and opened its doors. The concept and dream began a while ago. It began when owner Christina Procaccianti and her husband Ken began their courtship.

Everything about this story is unique, fun, romantic, and heart warming.

Christina, a pharmaceutical graduate of Northeastern University used to the take the Green Line subway to and from school. This is where she would meet her future partner and husband.

They began dating and realized they shared similar passions. One of those passions was a bit old fashioned.

They both loved soda fountains and began discussing their history. They knew many courtships began at soda fountains starting back in the 1800s.

You can imagine a medication made by hand would not be so inviting to the taste buds. Pharmacists had to come up with something

creative to make the medications more appealing to the taste. That’s when soda and toxins were added to enhance the taste of the meds. Back then, the pharmacists would mix the medications with cola, made from real cola nuts, and orange soda,

made from real oranges. Hence, the marriage between pharmacy’s and soda fountains began. This combination became so popular that by the late 1800s there were over 700 pharmaceutical/soda fountain shops in Manhattan alone.

As time and culture modernized, the bigger box chain stores and pharmacies starting opening, forcing the smaller, more personal pharmacies to close. The end of the soda fountain/ pharmacy combination was inevitable.

Soda fountains were replaced with ice cream stores and pharmacies were replaced with the larger box chain drug stores.

When Christina met Ken, they would bring us back in time. This modern day couple had a passion and dream to go back to a more simple time bringing back the soda fountain, pharmacy combination.

Is It Time to Get Out of the Market? -By Robert N. Auclair Some may say now is the time to get out of the market. This summer, the market hit an all-time high and continues to rise.

It seems as though the Brexit never even happened; however, it was as recent as June 2016 that it cost the market a 5% oneday loss. Many would say that the market is over inflated, Wall Street has been on a vacation and a turbulent election will influence a correction in the market.

So what should investors do? To answer this question, put yourself in one of the following categories:

1. Long-Term Investor: This is someone who is investing their money for five or more years and has a tolerance for market fluctuation.

2. Cash Investor: This investor has cash sitting in the bank and doesn’t know whether to put their money into the market or wait.

3. Retirement on the Horizon: This investor has fewer than five years until they need to use their funds for income.

The Market Is Too High Those who are worried about a market correction should keep in mind that over the last 30 years Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index has only been negative in five out of 30 years. That means the market has been positive 83% of the time. This is a glaring fact that investors find surprising. Most of us are emotional investors and dramatize the loss because it hurts more than the gains. The S&P 500 has gained more than 17% annually over the last 6.5 years, so it comes as no surprise that investors might want to think about getting out now.

As a long-term investor, you owe it to yourself to take the emotion out of the process. Don’t guess your way in and out of the market. For example, I had a client in 2012 tell me that they felt the market was flying too high and wanted to take the gains and go to cash. At that point, they had recovered all their loss from the 2008 financial crisis. They were long-term investors, and I recommended they stay the course. Since that point, they gained an additional 54%. I could have easily agreed with them that going to cash made sense because they were above the pre-financial crisis balance. But I knew, because they were long-term investors, they would benefit over time by staying invested.

As a cash investor, it is best to put your money to work for you over a period of time. This is called dollar-cost averaging, which spaces out the same investment purchase over several months. This results in buying your investments at the average price over the period decided upon. The next column shows an example of how dollar-cost averaging can benefit an investor.

In this example, if the client invested the full $4,000 on January 1st, they would have bought all the shares at the highest price. By using dollar-cost averaging, you have reduced the risk of purchasing all funds at the possible highest price.

If retirement is on the horizon, and you are within five years of using your funds, consider this a good time to possibly move to a more conservative allocation. Due to this short time horizon, you have very little time left to make changes to your allocation. Because the market has done so well recently, you may want to consider this an opportunity to move a portion of your assets from equity to fixed income.

Does the Election Make a Difference to Investors?

This election is different than any other. But the fact is all elections are different than any other. Many people believe each election will affect the economy and even change the course of history. In a day and age in which media is abundant and influential, certain stories are bound to effect the stock market for some periods of time. Still, the approach that is outlined above stays sound whether the market is too high, the election changes everything or some other headline shakes the economy. To give you some extra confidence, here are some statistics on market performance from 1945 through 2015, according to Russell Investments: In the 36 years that we had a Republican president, the S&P 500 returned 10.0%; during the 35 years in which a Democrat served as president, the S&P 500 gained 15.2%; and in 17 presidential election years, the index returned 9.9%.

Final Thoughts for Year-End Investing Long-term investors and cash investors need to stay the course, focus on longer-term averages and realize it is difficult or impossible to time shorter-term impacts. Make a plan and stick to it. Also, consider rebalancing your accounts. Investors that are close to retirement may want to consider a move to a more balanced portfolio. All investors need to keep their risk tolerance and timeframes in check and understand that markets will correct, but the odds are in your favor when you stay invested.

Pawtuxet Village In the native language, Pawtuxet means “Little Falls” and was originally occupied by the members of the Sononoce Pawtuxet tribe, part of the larger Narragansett Indian nation, who used the area we know as Pawtuxet Neck as a feasting ground. In 1638, Rhode Island founder, Roger Williams, purchased the property extending south from Providence to the Pawtuxet River. Shortly thereafter, his followers; William Arnold, William Harris, William Carpenter, and Zachariah Rhodes, settled along the fertile meadows of the Pawtuxet. Meanwhile, Samuel Gorton, the founder of Warwick, purchased the land south of the Pawtuxet River. Pawtuxet Village remains unique in that its northern section is in the town of Cranston, while its southern section is in Warwick. It is locat-

ed at the point where the Pawtuxet River flows into the Providence River and Narragansett Bay.

Some of my favorite childhood memories include the beginning of fall when all of the neighborhood children would gather to create awesome scarecrows to display in our yards. The best part was gathering clothes from our parents’ closets to use for the scarecrow and choosing unique pieces to fit our idea of what we were trying to create.

By Hannah Burke It was a cold winter morning. On January 15th, 2009, US Flight 1549 crashed into the Hudson River. The captain, Chesley Sullenberger, saved all of the 155 souls on board.

As the first ever successful water landing, the movie Sully retells the story for it’s viewers and shows us what really happened that day.

The movie starts a day after the heroic event. Captain Sully (Tom Hanks) and First Officer Skiles (Aaron Eckhart) are basking in their newfound glory of saving the people of Flight 1549. The public immediately dubs him as a hero. However, the National Transportation Safety Board suggests that he could have made it back to the airport, and that the left engine was in idle the whole time.

The NTSB also informs him that all the simulations they tested revealed that they could have made it back, feeding the fire even more to prove that it was a pilot error.

Sully denies these facts and retorts by telling them that he didn’t have the crucial elements such as time, altitude, and speed to make it back to either LaGuardia or Teterboro.

As time passes, Sully begins to have horrific flashbacks and nightmares of failed landings, on of which happens during an interview. It all seems so real and horrifying, then he realized it was a hallucination. Being in the air for almost 40 years, and that being his first crash is very scary. All throughout the movie, we see through Sully’s eyes as he has flashbacks back to the landing and the aftermath. He talks to his wife as time goes by and shows us how much he has on his plate. With the NTSB breathing down his back, and the thought of losing his house, gutwrenching flashbackss, and the media’s presence invading his privacy, it’s a lot to swallow all at once.

The date for the trial that will decide rapidly approaches and soon it’s the day of. Both Sully and Skiles are inter-

rogated and proven wrong. But Sully speaks up and tells the head of the NTSB that their simulations were wrong.

Airplane pilots aren’t trained for incidents like a water landing, or dual engine failure. The simulation pilots eliminated human factor from the situation. Soon, Sully turned the tides. The pilots were given 17 tries to get the landing right. When they were given the same delay as Sully and Skiles, both attempts failed. They crashed onto the landing strip and into a building. They also reviewed the audio from the cockpit, triggering a flashback in the pilot’s minds. Then, they learn that the left engine was actually completely destroyed, putting the NTSB’s data to rest.

Overall, I loved the movie. Although it was on the shorter side with a running time of 1 hour and 36 minutes, it was such a good film. It was packed with information that would make it a great field trip for Middle School and even High School students. The movie really showed how a crash like that can affect someone physically and mentally. The hallucinations were so vivid that in the beginning I actually flinched because I thought it was real. The movie was very focused on Sullenberger himself (Hence the name Sully) and I thought Aaron Eckhart was a really funny comedic relief for the movie, given its tense and dramatic atmosphere.

Being an action movie geek myself, I wasn’t as excited to see this movie. But I changed my opinion after seeing it.

I was alive when the crash happened, I was only 2 years old so I don’t remember it. Seeing how the people of New York banded together and helped the survivors really gives you hope that some people are still good, giving what’s going on in the world right now.

I give the drama/biography Sully a 5 out of 6 stars. Rated PG-13 for minor violence.

Through the Lens: Photography RI Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Photography RI By: Neko Catanzaro James Jones and his wife Amie Jagielow Jones shared a love of photography long before they established their own multimedia company. During college, Amie spent her extracurricular hours volunteering at her school’s dark room so she could have free access. James, despite pursuing a degree in music, would find himself poring over National Geographic magazines, mesmerized by the images and an art that seemed unattainable at that time.

“I never felt fully dedicated to music. I couldn’t practice five hours a day. t wasn’t until I picked up a camera that I felt like I had found my medium,” explained James.

After graduating, both James and Amie knew they wanted to start a multimedia design company, and Rhode Island was the perfect fit. “We originally wanted to work with family businesses as our main market and Rhode Island had the right mix and affordability to get started. It didn’t hurt that Providence had an arts-friendly vibe either.”

In the beginning, they never thought that photography could be the focus of their business. However, many of Photography RI’s clients needed content for their sites, so James and Amie started shooting photos for them. Behind the lens, it was apparent that they had found their art. “I could spend countless hours working on the craft, and I did. It has never stopped,” said James.

Photography RI ple are passionate about something, we become very interested; and our work allows us to explore their passion and in some way, feel like a part of it.”

Despite their success beyond Little Rhody, the Ocean State is still one of their favorite locations. “It sounds like a travel ad but there really is a lot of variety here. The more we photograph, the more we see of the state - from the greatest hits to the more unknown, quirky locations. Being an outsider has been hard at times, but now after ten years, we’re starting to feel like we’re a part of the fabric too.”

James and Amie have made the most of New England’s small, but dynamic geography, and over their shared career, have realized what truly inspires their craft. Their passion is capturing other people’s passions, those captured moments in time when people are at work or at play.

They have spent cold, winter days photographing rock climbers in Lincoln Woods, showcasing the physical prowess of the sport, and the gritty determination involved. They have been commissioned by world-renowned universities, including Harvard and Brown, to capture scientists and professors in their element.

“When you photograph people doing what they love, the joy is infectious. It’s the private spaces, homes and workshops, the little slices of life.”

From that point on, James and Amie consciously began pursuing more commercial projects. “Our design business was going along fine, but photography became an obsession. Once we started doing magazine work, our photo careers truly began.”

At the end of the day, James and Amie hope their images have a lasting impact, even if it’s only in a small way. “We may never be known to history but maybe we are leaving behind breadcrumbs for other people to discover. For us, photography is about documenting a time and place, more than it is a form of self-expression.”

Over the past ten years, Photography RI has built an impressive portfolio that spans from local New England magazines to international publications. Specializing in unique, high-quality photographs, James and Amie have had their fair share of noteworthy shoots. From photographing the official portrait of the mayor, to NBA hall-of-famer Magic Johnson, they have crossed all genres and subjects.

Just as Photography RI has grown organically over the past ten years, so too have James and Amie. Their art has not followed a particular path or focus; instead it has chosen new muses and new lenses of discovery. They still have a few local spots on their bucket list, like the Naval War College, Arcadia, and a behindthe-scenes look at Electric Boat; but they’re not putting a timeline on anything.

Blackstone Valley River By: Julia Romano In 1985, the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor (known after 1999 as the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor) was designated by the United States Congress, following the path of the Blackstone River from Providence to Worcester.

In 1997, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and Department of Transportation began work on the first Rhode Island segment, from Lincoln to Ashton. This segment was completed in 1998. A second Rhode Island segment was completed in 2002, from Ashton to Manville. In August 2007, a bridge reconstruction project at Martin Street in Lincoln was completed, ending a three-year bike path closure.

The new bridge incorporated a major safety improvement with the path passing underneath Martin Street instead of meeting it at grade. In

November 2007, a 2-mile extension from Manville to the Woonsocket Water Treatment Plant was opened.

A 1-mile segment from Lonsdale to Valley Falls, which includes more than 500 feet of boardwalk over part of the Lonsdale Marsh, opened in 2008. A segment through the River’s Edge Recreational Complex in Woonsocket was completed in 2008, and that segment was linked to the previously-completed portions to the south later that year. The path was about 10 miles long as of mid2009. Additional segments were under design to extend the path further through Woonsocket toward the Massachusetts border and south into Central Falls and Pawtucket. In 2011, an 8.5 mile segment of on-road bicycle lanes opened connecting the Blackstone River Greenway with the East Bay Bike Path, starting in Providence. In 2013, sharrows were painted through Woonsocket from the Massachusetts border to the River’s Edge Recreational Complex.

One of the most exciting projects currently underway in the Heritage Corridor is the extension of the construction of the Blackstone Valley River Bikeway. When completed, this bikeway will extend forty-eight miles from downtown Worcester, MA to India Point Park in Providence, RI. From there it will connect with the existing East Bay Bikepath and continue on to Bristol, RI. The Blackstone River Greenway (previously known as the Blackstone River Bikeway) represents a big undertaking in this tiny state: The 11.8-mile trail is the largest open segment on a nearly 50-mile corridor that will eventually connect Providence to Worcester, Massachusetts.

Ashton marks the approximate trail midpoint. You could begin or end your journey here by parking on Route 116 or at the visitor center along Interstate 295, which provides restrooms and information. Each parking lot offers a connecting spur on a slight incline to the trail.

History buffs may choose to visit the historical Kelly House Museum, former home of Wilbur Kelly, a ship captain and mill owner. Nestled between the river and canal, the museum relates the transportation and industrial history of each waterway and the railroads.

Currently almost 20 miles of the Bikeway have been completed, including about 14 miles of paved, off-road bike path.

There’s only one more street crossing after that. The tarmac is perfect; wellmaintained. On a ride there with my son we saw a young beaver, snowy egret, a pair of swans, and interesting-looking ducks. I look forward to the day the trail actually runs from Providence to Worcester.”
