U.S. Diets Are Still Lacking Americans’ diets are a little less sweet and a little crunchier but there’s still too much sugar, white bread, and artery-clogging fat, a new study suggests. Overall, the authors estimated there was a modest improvement over 16 years on the government’s healthy eating index, from an estimated score of 56 to 58. That’s hardly cause for celebration—100 is the top score. Diets are still too heavy on foods that can contribute to heart disease, diabetes, obesity and other prevalent US health problems, said co-author Fang Fang Zhang, a nutrition researcher at Tufts University near Boston. The results are from an analysis of US government health surveys from 1999 to 2016 involving nearly 44,000 adults. Despite observed improvements,” the authors wrote, “important dietary challenges” remain. Among them: Getting Americans to cut down on snack foods, hot dogs, fatty beef, butter and other foods containing saturated fats. The study found these unhealthy fats increased from 11.5% to almost 12% of daily calories, above the recommended 10% limit. While the biggest change was a small drop in added sugars, from about 16% to roughly 14%, that’s still too high. The government says less than 10% of daily calories should come from added sugars. Researchers think fewer sweetened sodas contributed to the decline, but Zhang noted added sugars are often found in foods that don’t even seem sweet, including some yogurts and tomato sauce. During the study years, US diabetes rates almost doubled, to more than 7%; obesity rates increased during many of those years, with about 70% of US adults now overweight or obese. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death.

AAA Puzzled by Sharp Rise in Red-Light Deaths
On average, more than two Americans are killed every day by drivers who plow through red lights, and the figure is growing, according to a new study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The organization says that in 2017, the last year for which figures are available, the number of red-light deaths - including drivers, passengers, and pedestrians - hit 939. The study looked at the counts from the 2008 to 2017 period, and 2017 far outpaced the other years, seven of which were in the 700-range. The figure hit a low of 715 in 2009. In 2012, it was at 731, and the count has climbed in each of the five following years. AAA analysts say they’re not sure why the figure rose 28% between 2012 and 2017, a rate far higher than the 10% overall rise in road deaths. ”I wish we had a better answer than we do,” senior researcher Brian Tefft tells the AP. He suspects distracted driving is a big part of the problem, along with traffic light cycles that may not spend enough time on yellow.

DEVILED EGGS WITH BBQ CHICKEN AND COLE SLAW This was a huge hit when I brought them to a recent neighborhood party. Imagine the best of a deviled egg and a BBQ chicken sandwich, and you’ve got this appetizer that rocks in more ways than one. This is a great appetizer you can make ahead of time. I boil the eggs and make the cole slaw the day before, then keep them in the fridge. Even the chicken can be cooked the day before and then warmed through before assembling right before your guests arrive. Be sure to make a lot of them…they’ll go faster than the hard-boiled eggs in “Cool Hand Luke!” This recipe is gluten-free, as long as you use GF soy sauce.
INGREDIENTS:
DIRECTIONS:
For the chicken and BBQ sauce: • 3 cups ketchup (I use Heinz organic) • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (I use La Choy: it’s gluten-free) • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (I use Frank’s Red Hot) • 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts
Pre-heat the oven to 250 degrees.
For the cole slaw: • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (always Hellman’s) • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (I use organic cane sugar) • 2 cups finely shredded cabbage
For perfectly hard-boiled eggs, place the eggs in a pot of cold water, and turn the heat on high. Just before the water starts to boil, put a lid on the pot and turn the heat off. Let the eggs sit in the hot water for 15 minutes. Once cooked, keep the eggs in the fridge.
For the deviled eggs: • 6 hard-boiled eggs • 1/4 cup mayonnaise • 1 tablespoon mustard (I use Gulden’s)
Combine the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, hot sauce, and brown sugar in a oven-proof pot with a lid. Mix well, then add the chicken breasts, making sure they’re immersed in the sauce. Cook low and slow in the oven for about 3–4 hours. When the chicken is cooked through, shred the meat with 2 forks. Set it aside, but keep it warm. Combine all the cole slaw ingredients in a bowl, mixing well, and place them in the fridge.
Slice the eggs in half and place the yolks in a bowl with the mayonnaise and mustard. Mix well and keep in the fridge. To assemble, take a teaspoon of the mayo/mustard/yolk mixture and place it in the cavity of one of the egg halves. Place another teaspoon of the shredded chicken on top (I like it warm, to counter the cold of the mayo and cole slaw), drizzling a little of the BBQ sauce that you cooked the chicken with on the meat. Then place a teaspoon of the cole slaw on top of the chicken. Serve immediately! ShopInRI 9

From an inexpensive basket of tacos to the fanciest of restaurants, tacos can be found in any city, and on any corner of Mexico, but…where did the taco originate? Throughout the years the taco has been deemed the symbol of Mexican cuisine. The taco, in its entirety, is part of the Mexican culture. One theory is that the word “taco” comes from the Nahuatl word ‘tlahco’ which means “half or in the middle,” referring to its formation. Another presumption is that the word taco dates from the 18th century and the silver mines in Mexico, because in those mines, the word “taco” referred to the little charges they would use to excavate the ore. These were pieces of paper that they would wrap around gunpowder and insert into the holes they carved in the rock face, and act as an explosive like a stick of dynamite. For the past 20 years, Jeffrey M. Pilcher, professor at the University of Minnesota, has done significant research on the history of the taco and other Mexican food. Pilcher has even published a book called “Global Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food” (edited by the University of Oxford). Some of the results of his research highlights the following findings. 10 ShopInRI
Almost every dish in Mexico starts with corn. Although its origin is unknown, it is believed that the taco was born as the basis of the civilization of Olmec (the first great culture to arise in Mexico and Central America) diet thanks to the first traces of nixtamalized corn. The oldest form of nixtamal (a process for the preparation of maize (corn), or other grain, in which the corn is soaked and cooked in an alkaline solution, usually limewater (but sometimes wood ash lye), washed, and then hulled) dates back to 1,500 BC and was found in Soconusco, Chiapas. It is said that the ninth ruler of Tenochtitlán, Montezuma, used the tortilla as a “spoon” to hold the food, and they were prepared on hot stones, adorned with cochineal (red dyestuff consisting of the dried, pulverized bodies of certain female scale insects), and served with beans and chili. The Mexican women would send food to their male family members who worked long hours in the fields, and the tortillas could be heated and eaten a day later. In the 1950s, due to a shortage of jobs and area economic crisis, the residents of San Vicente Xiloxochitla, in Tlaxcala, began selling the famous basket tacos. This became the first
place where dozens of taqueros (taco makers) rode their bicycles every morning to sell their tacos to different communities. They would leave their homes with a basket loaded with tacos, covered with a small tarp and with some bottles of red and green salsas to sell to workers, students and employees, who were on their way to school or work. There are even those who would use vans to carry their bicycles, enabling them to reach more remote areas such as Mexico City, Puebla, Hidalgo, and other areas, to carry the baskets, jars and coolers, so as to keep the tacos warm. The taco originally came to the US through migrants who traveled to the Los Angeles area in the early 1900s. It was originally referred to as a low-class street food sold by “Chili Queens.” These tacos that were sold in the US were not traditional tacos that you would find in Mexico. The Chili Queens of San Antonio were street vendors who earned a little extra money by selling food during festivals. When tourists started arriving in the 1880s with the railroad, these occasional sales started to become a nightly event. Tourists came looking for two things in San Antonio—the Alamo and the Chili Queens. During
this time, Mexico was considered a dangerous place. The Chili Queens were a way of sampling that danger, but not at the risk of being taken advantage of by thieves. The risk was only in that the food was hot—people described it as “biting like a serpent.” The Chili Queens were women who were also labeled as being sexual and seen as “available.” So the idea was that you would flirt with the Chili Queens. The image of something slightly dangerous, but still appealing, has persisted to this day with Mexican food. During the 1920s, taco trucks starting to pop up in the western and southwestern portions of the US. All over the country, family run Mexican restaurants began appearing and each one brought their own version of tacos to the tables of America. Dating back to the 18th century, the taco has jumped from the Mexican silver mines to a fast food staple. Glen Bell, founder of the well known franchise fast food restaurant, Taco Bell, did not invent the taco, but what he did do was borrow everything about the taco from his Mexican neighbors. Next, he brought a US business model called franchising and opened Taco Bell restaurants in lots of US cities, but there very few in East L.A., the biggest Mexican neighborhood in all of California. Why was that? Mexicans, when they were selling to other Mexicans, were not calling their restaurants taco shops. The word “taco” as a part of a restaurant name was actually a way of selling Mexican food to nonMexicans. What Glen Bell was doing was allowing Americans of other racial and ethnic groups to sample Mexican food without venturing into Mexican neighborhoods. So as it went, Mexican silver miners likely invented the taco, Mexican immigrants brought it to the US, Mexican Americans in the Southwest reinvented it, and Glen Bell massmarketed it via the crunchy Taco Bell shell.

THE ADVENTURE
STARTS HERE! By Jenn Lombari
Byron Delmonico, Kara Zanni, and Mike Casey are taking escape rooms in Rhode Island to a whole other level. With the East Greenwich location being booked steadily for large and small groups of kids and adults, they decided to open a second location with even more space for adventures. With the new location, the focus is not only on challenging guests to solve new puzzles, but to encourage guests to book corporate events and birthday parties in their function room. When asked what inspired him to open such a business, owner, Byron Delmonico, explained that he had visited an escape room a few years ago with some friends and he absolutely fell in love with the concept. Delmonico always had a creative side to him and a will to entertain and he knew he could improvise on the idea and make it better. This was an opportunity to encompass both his skills and strengths. He loves what he does and you can tell upon meeting him that he wants you to have fun and love it too. So on November 1, 2016, The Riddle Room in East Greenwich became a reality and was open to the public. In Rhode Island, you cannot lock anyone in a room, so he branded his business as 28 ShopInRI
The Riddle Room.
This is also part of what sets his business apart from other escape rooms. Here, you focus on other tasks besides escaping a room. Here, you have to solve riddles, solve a murder, infiltrate the mob, find treasures… You have ONE HOUR… At the East Greenwich location, there are two games to choose from. They are designed for 10 people. If there are a few more people in the group, up to 14 can participate. If there are under 10 people, you may be teamed up with other people. Riddles have been solved with less but its better and easier with more. Puzzles can be solved simultaneously in a room which helps the team beat the clock. It’s common for groups of friends to be teamed up with new people. They often find themselves making plans to solve a new puzzle together or they end up going out for dinner or drinks in the area after solving a puzzle at Riddle Room. Each game is basically a board game and you are the game piece. Instead of flipping over a card to get a clue, you open a door or a box, or something interactive so you are living the game. At the East Greenwich location, you can choose between a Federal Hill Mafia game, or a cold case theme based at The LADD Center (a sort of serial killer type theme). All of the games have a Rhode Island Theme. At the new Warwick location, Riddle Room features their game Forest Of Fortune. Because this location is bigger than the first, they are building other games right now with a haunted hotel game that will be ready by Fall, and a very special Rocky Point themed game in the works. Be prepared to walk down memory lane if you ever went to the iconic Rhode Island amusement park before in closed. Before long, the Warwick location will have 6 games total while the East Greenwich location will have two. The party room and Riddle Room can accommodate 20-25 people. This is a fun way to host corporate team building events and birthday parties for kids and adults. There are two packages. The DIY package and the Deluxe package. The DIY package offers the 90 minute event where you have 15 minutes pregame to prepare and get all pumped up for your adventure, an hour game time, and 15 minutes after to take pictures. You are required to bring the food, drinks, plates, napkins, etc. and you clean up the room after your party. The Deluxe package offers the same 90 minute pre and post game time with the hour adventure only Riddle Room supplies the plates and napkins and takes care of clean up, you just bring the food and drinks. A little over 25 years ago, I was working for a company named Simons Clothing. They were a Boston firm that had come to Providence in 1986 because they had read an article in a national magazine which touted Providence as being a truly great up and coming city. They came with very high expectations but didn’t really take into account that the population of Providence was, one tenth the size of Boston. I went to work for them in the fall of 1990. Around the 4th of July week in 1994, on the weekend that I started my summer vacation, Simons’ personnel showed up in the middle of the night, cleaned all the clothes out of the store, and left the employees jobless. I got a call the next morning from my co-worker, Frank Burrows, to get right down the store. He didn’t tell me why. An hour later, I walked into the store to find our tailor, Maria Carvalho, distraught. Frank was beside himself. They looked at me and asked me whether there was anything we could do? I said “we can say goodbye to each other, go file for unemployment insurance, or open our own store”. They looked at me like I was crazy. I said, “Just watch me”. That was twenty-five years ago. I remember that a few nights before the store opened, I was inside the store putting shirts away. We had just dressed our first windows that afternoon. I remember overhearing some of the comments made by some the guys who worked downtown. “I give them six months”, They said, “They
don’t stand a chance”. That was all I needed to hear. In 1999 the Providence Place mall opened. The mall put most of the local men’s stores right out of business. I knew just about every guy in Providence would go over to the mall and buy a suit. Yet, eventually the customers figured out that we had better merchandise, and better prices, and they came back. Several years ago, a major men’s chain moved in next door to us. One of my customers told me that will really hurt us. They lasted two years and ten months. And walked out in the middle of the night. I have had two aortic aneurysms in the last 13 years, nearly died, recovered, yet still enjoy coming to work almost every day. Customers implore us never to close, and tell us that they wouldn’t have anywhere else to shop if we ever did. Well, let the truth be known, I hope this is just my first 25 years. I know retail has changed, yet our business is still growing, and we see new customers every day. We have had a big assist from the internet, which has changed the retail game forever. None of us saw it coming, but it has gutted out malls all over the country, and caused thousands of stores to close or downsize dramatically. When it comes to buying a suit, the internet it hasn’t worked for most guys. You need to feel, touch, and try on a new suit, not buy from a picture. We have opened our Groom Store, and produce hundreds of weddings every year. I have been working with a great bunch of men and women who will carry on if I ever decide to take my boots off. We thank each and every one of you who have been loyal to us over the years. Your business is truly appreciated. Thank you!

The days of playing outside have been replaced with technology, making natural exercise for children almost obsolete. Over the years, we have learned that exercise helps with sleep, mood, confidence, and overall health. Exercise helps children meet their developmental milestones. Although technology occupies the child and gives the parents “me time,” it’s important to know that children who are inactive by spending too much time in front of a screen watching television, playing computer video games, or talking and typing on their phones have an increased risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. Too much screen time may also affect your child’s muscle and bone development, posture, neck alignment, eye function, overall 44ShopInRI ShopInRI 44
self-esteem, and confidence. The American Heart Association recommends that children ages 2 years and older participate in at least 60 minutes of enjoyable, physical activity every day to improve cardiovascular fitness, physical wellness and emotional development. This can be broken down into two 30 min sessions or four 15 min sessions, but at least a total of 60 minutes. Encouraging an inactive child to exercise more can be a difficult challenge, however, it’s never been more important. Childhood obesity rates have more than doubled in pre-teens and tripled in teens over the last 30 years. Taking in too many calories, especially when paired with a sedentary lifestyle,
can seriously affect a child’s health. Overweight children are more likely to grow up to be obese adults, which increases their risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, osteoarthritis, and more. It is of my opinion that technology is also responsible for out of control childhood obesity, diabetes, ADHD and other chronic disease. The solution seems obvious but how do we do it? We need to get creative. Here’s some “fun” ways to get the kids out and moving. TUG OF WAR Kids love good playful competition. Tug of war builds excellent core strength and is great for biceps, core and calves. You’re not only
building muscle and shredding fat, you’re building team work too.

ROCK CLIMBING Rock climbers are among some of the fittest athletes and this is becoming more and more popular. You’re not only building arm and leg muscles, you are building incredible core strength! This is not just physical. You actually use your brain, as you have to develop strategy skills in deciding on when and where to move next. Even more importantly, rock climbing has been shown to have a positive impact on anxiety, self-esteem and depression.
SOCCER Soccer builds cardiovascular health while building flexibility and coordination. Most importantly, it fosters excellent teamwork skills and kids have a blast doing it. Because soccer is mainly an outdoor sport, the kids are getting more vitamin D and developing stronger bones. Soccer has definitely become more popular in the United States as of recent, so the kids are finding it’s the “in” thing to do.
SWIMMING We all hear about how swimming is a great exercise for children. Here’s why. It’s great for flexibility, reducing inflammation and building bone mass. Most kids love to swim and play in the pool with their friends, which makes swimming a fun way for the kids to get some exercise. TENNIS Tennis builds great teamwork and self-confidence. However; the real benefits of tennis are some of the physical benefits like hand-eye coordination, flexibility, fine motor control and balance. GYMNASTICS Many kids who do gymnastics have dreams of being in the olympics, but the reality is they probably won’t make it that far. But that’s ok! Gymnasts are among the fittest of all athletes. Kids gain flexibility, coordination, improved cognitive function, self-discipline and amazing core strength. A great thing about gymnastics is that

Welcome fall! I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to cooler weather, sweaters, apple picking, and pumpkin everything! It’s also the best time to savor the time spent outdoors before colder weather comes. If you haven’t already it’s a great time to focus your fitness routine a couple of times a week getting out of the house. New England is well known for beautiful fall scenery, so why not get out and discover something new. Exercise doesn’t have to monotonous, there are plenty of great places to hike locally. There’s a wonderful book called Weekend Hikes in Rhode Island by Ken Weber that I was introduced to awhile back. He does an excellent job of breaking down each destination with detailed directions, approximate walking time, and the distance. A couple that are great for fall are Napatree Point and Browning Mill Pond- Roaring Brook. These are just a couple of the many that are close by. Always be safe when hiking new areas and do your research prior to heading out. As always never hike close to dark. If hiking new areas isn’t your thing take a walk or run in your neighborhood or local park. Get your family involved in fitness! If you don’t have children take the dogs along with you. Children love to get outside and explore nature. There’s plenty to explore to stimulate the mind and get some physical activity in. When you’re having fun exercise doesn’t feel like a task. Most dogs are always up for a walk, you can train them to run while you’re training g yourself. Alternate between jogging and walking in 30 second intervals to start off and work your way up from there. Bring water for you and your pet to keep everyone hydrated. Enjoy the beginning of this beautiful season and stay motivated. Just because it’s getting cooler out doesn’t mean that it’s not a good time to start working out. Anytime is a great time to start! It doesn’t have to be that way. Dynamic Performance & Rehab helps runners, such as yourself, by analyzing your mechanics and understanding what the underlying causes are to your aches and pains that seem to pop-up mid run.
The second exercise is a hamstring bridge. This will engage the hamstrings and help reduce soreness and muscle pulls, as they tend to get weak with the above described “over-extending.” Dig the heels down and scoop your butt towards the back of your knees, as you continue to lift your hips in the air. You should feel the back of the mid thighs engage and the butt. Do 2 sets of 6-8 reps with slow lowers. (For more advanced individuals, you can raise up/down on one leg).
Fall is the 5k season and many runners have come to us for help to improve their warm-up routines, running mechanics, conditioning, strength, or any combination of these. Many times runners tend to run with an over-extended posture, reducing their rotational abilities through their upper torso and hips. These are crucial components to efficient running. When your options are limited, such as in the classic extended running fashion, you tend to wear out the same movement patterns. We have added some quick “running tune-up” exercises that we have recommended to many runners at similar events. First, we have the modified pigeon stretch. As you can see in the picture, the goal is to keep the front knee elevated (on a folded towel or yoga block) and in line with the center of the chest. The back leg kicks behind in line with the front foot. You should feel a big stretch in the back of the hip. Hold for 30-60 seconds. This is great for sinking into each hip for improved efficiency.

LOCAL RI WOMAN COMPETES FOR MAXIM MAGAZINE COVERGIRL CONTEST Providence, Rhode Island’s very own Bri Duffy, believes that every body is beautiful and that social media creates an unrealistic beauty standard for women to live up to. This misleading image can cause body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, and disordered eating. When girls compare their bodies to what is seen in the media, it increases their chance of having a poor body image. Female celebrities are constantly photoshopped to perfect their bodies by clearing any flaws in their skin and editing their body parts, such as making their waist thinner and their breasts larger. Bri is bringing awareness to this issue as a contestant in the 2019 Maxim Covergirl Competition which benefits the Home for Wounded Warriors Foundation. Will You Retire or Keep Working? Your Answer May Impact Your Social Security Check One of the most important decisions you will make in retirement is when to begin receiving your Social Security benefits. Yet this decision often depends on another: whether you plan to retire or keep working. The following are some pointers to help you make both decisions with confidence. When you can claim Social Security benefits. Understanding your Social Security award starts with the concept of full retirement age, or the age at which you are eligible to receive full retirement benefits, which are determined by your year of birth, earnings history and other factors. For those born between 1943 and 1954, full retirement age is 66. And for those born after 1959, it gradually increases until it reaches 67. You can check with the Social Security website (SSA.gov) to look up your full retirement age. The Social Security rules offer some flexibility to apply for a lower or higher monthly benefit. You can file for a lower benefit (compared to waiting until your full retirement age) as early as age 62 or delay the start of your Social Security checks to receive a higher benefit until as late as age 70. Note: there is no financial benefit to waiting beyond age 70 to claim your benefits. Beyond the age at which you choose to file for benefits, one of the biggest factors in the amount you will receive monthly is whether you decide to work or not. The following are pros and cons of four common scenarios: Retire and claim Social Security early: If you decide to apply for benefits early, you will receive a reduced amount. Pro: One benefit of this approach is you can use Social ● Security to pay for immediate expenses, while your other retirement savings (i.e., retirement plan or other savings) have time to continue to grow. Con: Your monthly check can be reduced by up to 25 ● percent or more compared to the amount you would be awarded at full retirement age. This difference may be significant if you spend decades in retirement. Keep working and claim Social Security: You are allowed to apply for benefits and continue to work. Pro: This is a common approach for retirees who ● choose to pursue part-time work. Claiming allows for a steady stream of income in case your other paycheck fluctuates and gives your investments time to continue to grow. ● Con: If you are under full retirement age, your check will be further reduced if you exceed the annual earnings limit. If your Social Security benefits are reduced because you work, they will be increased when you reach full retirement age. Social Security benefits can be subject to tax, so you may run up a higher tax bill. Consult your tax planner to review the implications of this scenario. Retire and wait to claim Social Security: If you defer your retirement benefits beyond your full retirement age, you will get a bigger monthly check when you finally start taking benefits. Pro: Delaying benefits may be advantageous if your ● expenses, including health care costs, are manageable in the foreseeable future and you expect to live long enough to make up for the months or years of postponed benefits. 58 ShopInRI
Con: You may need to start drawing down other ● sources of income in the interim. Doing so may generate less investment growth in the future, so you will need to watch your withdrawal rate to ensure it remains sustainable. Keep working and wait to claim Social Security: If you expect to rely on income from your current job or another one in retirement, you may consider waiting to claim benefits. ● Pro: Relying on a steady paycheck can allow you to continue building your nest egg with additional savings, while your Social Security benefits grow too. This approach may be ideal if you want to save more to achieve your dream lifestyle later in retirement. Con: You may not be able to choose your retirement ● date. A layoff or heath event could affect even the best-laid plans, so have a contingency option in place if you choose this approach. These are only the most common scenarios, so keep in mind that other factors (such as your marital status and potential spousal benefits, amount of savings, financial concerns, retirement goals) will also impact your decision on when to claim benefits. For guidance on when the best timing may be for you, visit the Social Security website (SSA.gov) and consult a financial advisor in your area.

Founded by John Reckner, Passion for Pumpkins is a professional multi-media company run by the Reckner family and close friends. Passion for Pumpkins produces shows around the country. • The pumpkins are kept up because they keep carving and enhancing the displays throughout the life of the show. The carvers expect to go through about 20,000 pumpkins during the course of the 32-night run.

Saturday, October 19th 5pm–9pm The Steel Yard, 27 Sims Avenue, Providence The Steel Yard will be transforming the entire Yard into a theatrical display of fire and art this October. The trained Pour crew will harness the power of their custom-built iron tilt-furnace to pour over 2,500 pounds of luminous, molten iron. Larger than life sculptures will be activated by fire and the molten metal. People return annually not only for the sparky performance and the numerous steel and iron props that they build in their own studio, but also for the phenomenal local music and food.

She had a shop down the road called Heart Of A Gypsy but when the building was being sold, it was perfect timing. The space she’s in now became available in September 0f 2019 and she opened Bewitched in 2017.
Roxanne Cabot Jasparro is the owner of Bewitched, a tiny healing center/shop in Scituate Village. She knew at a young age that she wasn’t like the other kids. What herself, and others found strange, her grandmother seemed to understand. She herself had this gift and was able to comfort Roxanne and help her to use her special abilities to help others. She taught Roxane the meaning of being a witch and that she was special. She taught her to believe in herself and the magic she had inside her and in the universe. Culture and society has made the word “witch” into something dark and ugly, but it’s actually a very positive thing. Witchcraft, the craft of being a witch, has been used throughout time to help and heal, and is more popular now than it ever has been. People are becoming more educated on the subject and are turning to natural, homeopathic ways of dealing with life’s stresses and their own overall wellbeing. Sometimes, witchcraft is confused with Wicca, and is actually a religion. She is not a Wiccan. Everything we need to heal ourselves is naturally right here on this Earth. Learning how to use it is what’s important. Jasparro wants to encourage people to find the magic within themselves and make them aware that although she’d never turn anyone away, they don’t need her for everything. It’s important to her to make them feel comfortable and not like an outcast. Some don’t want their ability so they are taught to put it into art or some other creative medium. The Earth science of
witchcraft is all about helping and healing. Even if she is providing a service for someone, and it runs over in time, she keeps going until they are done with no extra charge. This goes for Reiki sessions and psychic readings. Reiki is a very popular practice. It’s an energy healing that has been known to help remove ailments and negative emotions. Because each person is different, some sessions may last longer than others. Why Fall is the Absolute Best Time of Year to Paint the Exterior of your New England Home…

Seemingly throughout the course of every year, a question that I am often asked is something along the lines of: When is the best time of year to paint my home? Obviously, the answer could be different in varying parts of the country. Many times I will hedge my answer by stating what I technically believe to be true: as long as daytime surface temps are at least in the 40s, the moisture content of whatever it is that we are painting does not exceed 15%, and it is not anticipated that there will be temps lower than the mid-20s overnight, we are good to go. Certainly anything that hovers around any of the above threshold points may definitely be a little dicey (as it is with most thresholds), but while navigating things through the years, we have found these weather condition parameters to be very viable. With that being said, fall in New England (on average) would definitely qualify in terms of being able to meet these minimum standards. I have found fall to be a nerve-wracking time in New England for those looking to do painting on the exterior of their property. It is interesting to me as many either stay away from fall altogether, or proceed with extreme caution, walking on eggshells throughout the painting process as if “Old Man Winter” was staring at their back, watching their every move, waiting to strike at any moment as they are working on their project. Without a doubt, fall tends to be very enjoyable working weather in comparison to other time periods of the year, but it is also great for the products we are working with as well. In New England, fall is not as hot/humid as the summer tends to be, is not as wet as the weather in a typical New England spring (with “spring” in New England starting anywhere from April through June) and winter, well…let me not share how I truly feel about winter… Often, I believe Ne Englanders fall (no pun intended) victim to outside influences with regard to painting during this period of year. Whether it is from manufacturer edicts, thoughts they may come across on the Internet, or outside opinions of friends & family, there is much “noise” that may seem to suggest other times of year as being the best. I appreciate all of that and am undoubtedly aware that there are other times of year that are great times to perform exterior painting (after all, I have run a company that specializes in painting exteriors in New England for almost 25 years, with our exterior schedules normally running from the beginning of April through the end of November). If I had to pick a “season” that tends to be “most” ideal, however, it would be the fall. The biggest reason being that assuming the work is done within my recommended guideline structure mentioned earlier, the product being applied will have its greatest chance (on average) to dry & cure at a nice, even clip – think of soup on the stove, best cooked at a pleasant, simmering rate vs. a quick boil or with the burner not quite hot enough. 76 ShopInRI
With the 5-year warranty we offer, I would not allow our exterior painting to occur at a time period when the product was not going to be able to perform as best as it possibly could (for reasons that should be quite evident…i.e., having to incur costs to honor our warranty with a paint failure of some type somewhere down the line…). If you are doing the exterior work on your own, I am encouraging you to take this all into consideration when planning your exterior painting, as you have control as to when in the year you would be planning to paint the outside of your home. The challenge with trying to hire professionals with the intent to paint your exterior when fall comes around, is that most reputable outfits may be backlogged from schedules that have experienced weather-related delays from earlier in the year. The best time to book a professional to paint in the Fall would be at the beginning of the year where the schedule can be set up that way with (what should be) little difficulty. Fall is a beautiful time of year in New England. For many, a New England fall, its beautiful colors and relatively comfortable days are the stuff that postcards are made of and one of the things that make living in New England so appealing. Exterior painting-wise, I feel the same way. Our staff can work in weather conditions that allow them to feel relaxed and knowing that the product we are applying is in a good place with regard to dry times is very comforting to me, personally. The sweet smell of fallen leaves, football constantly on TV, and the changing of colors in the environment are yearly reminders to me of simply a great time of year to get exterior painting work done!

“I wanted to do something more than work in the corporate world ~ I wanted to do something for myself and my family,” said Towne, who left a Johnston-based company before striking out on her own. “My mom opened her alterations shop when she was my age about 20 years ago. I have always looked up to her because she came to the United States with my dad and my two sisters and me without too much money. She didn’t know a lot of English when she decided to open up her business, but she had the motivation and the drive to do it on her own.” For 15 years, Towne has helped individuals and employees understand their financial health while working in the corporate world. She felt getting people to understand their finances led to her opening a bookkeeping business. Her experience and expertise in the field, which includes being Certified Professional Bookkeeper, Certified Payroll Professional and a QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor, can benefit clients. Towne began her finance career in 2000, while employed by Fleet Bank. She initially answered calls from customers about their checking and savings accounts. In 2002, she got promoted to the Loan Department –

the same concept, except she answered questions on customers’ loans and lines of credits. She discovered that they partnered with the New England College of Finance in Boston, where she completed her Associate’s Degree in Business Management in 2003. After a merger between Fleet Bank and Bank of America led to layoffs a year later, other accounting opportunities opened up for Towne. She spent three years working for New England Gas Company as an Accounts Receivable Analyst. Another merger led to more layoffs in 2007 that included her. She found a job as an Accounts Payable Analyst at CVS Pharmacy later that year. She was later promoted to Payroll Tax Analyst in 2009 at CVS Pharmacy and worked there until she was laid off in 2015. Along the way, Towne picked a lot of the aspects of her industry that would serve her well. “I really enjoyed learning all about the payroll taxes and how it all worked,” she said. “I was so intrigued with taxes that I decided to work for Liberty Tax on a parttime basis so I could learn while helping people with their individual taxes.” After CVS, she continued focusing on payroll taxes and found another Payroll Tax Analyst position at FM Global in 2016. “After having my son in
February of 2017, it became tough maintaining a work-life balance,” she explained. After returning from maternity leave, I didn’t feel the same,” she continued. The challenges of getting back into a routine along with caring for a newborn son led to her decision to quit her job and be a stay-at-home mom. “At first, it was really awesome... I really loved spending time with him, but then it got a little boring ~ I felt like I needed to do something more. So, on a cold night in January, (it was actually the week of my birthday), I decided to look at home-based businesses just to see what’s out there,” she said. Towne found a bookkeeping program called Bookkeeping Business Launch. She figured it was a scam, so she did her research, spoke with people on Facebook who used it, and charged forward—without any regrets. “I have never looked back…..it was the best thing that I have ever done! It not only taught me about bookkeeping, but I also learned how to create my own website, how to network, where to go, and what to do to open up my own business. I can’t say that it was easy, but I kept going to networking events the first three months and handed out my business cards to everyone that I met.” “In the very first networking event that I went to, I met my sponsor, who introduced me to BNI,” Towne explained. “It was such a great connection with him and now, the BNI Founders Chapter group.
