During the fall months, apple picking has been a favorite pastime of my family and is an event that we have enjoyed since our teenagers were toddlers. Along with picking apples and using them to make pies, we never left the farms without letting the tots choose the best pumpkins in the patches. My kids hold these memories dear, as they are now older, and still love to make a day out of visiting RI’s farms every year in October. There is no doubt that they will continue this tradition when they have children of their own.

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cake (Baked in coffee cans)

Ingredients • 3 cups white sugar • 1 (15 ounce) can or fresh (see below) pumpkin puree • 1 cup vegetable oil • 2/3 cup water • 4 eggs • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon • 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg • 2 teaspoons baking soda • 1 ½ teaspoons salt • 1 ½ cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips • ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. • Grease and flour three 1 pound size coffee cans. ((3)9x5 inch loaf pans if you do not have coffee cans). • In a large bowl, combine sugar, pumpkin, oil, water, and eggs. • Beat until smooth. • Blend in flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt. Fold in chocolate chips and nuts. • Fill cans to almost ¾ full. • Bake for 1 hour, or until an inserted knife comes out clean. • Cool on wire racks before removing from cans or pans. • Add vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or spread with cream cheese to make this dessert even more yummy.

Easy directions for fresh pumpkin puree Once it’s home, rinse the pumpkin, then cut it in half. Smaller pumpkins will be easier to work with. Push a heavy knife into the top near the stem and push down to the bottom. Keep your fingers out of the way. I suggest using a dish towel (or a mopeen, as it’s referred to in my family) to keep the pumpkin in place while you are cutting into it. Turn the pumpkin and make a cut from the stem to the bottom again. Wiggle the knife through the bottom so that all but the stem is cut. Don’t try to cut through the stem; it’s much too tough and may cause you to cut yourself. Last, pull the two halves apart. As you do this, the top of the pumpkin should break just under the stem, and the stem can be pulled away. Scoop out the pumpkin seeds and any stringy flesh, then lightly season with salt. Place the halves cut-side-down onto a baking sheet and roast until the flesh is soft and coming away from the skin. Once the pumpkin is roasted, scoop the softened flesh into a food processor and blend until smooth. It’s now ready to be used for your pumpkin recipe.

For Rhode Island’s restaurants, hotels, and other hospitality businesses, the summer of 2021 was one that tested the resolve of our workers, managers, and operators in many ways, some of which were expected, and others that were not. Prior to the start of the summer, Rhode Islanders were excited for a return to normalcy as most COVID-19 restrictions were lifted in light of the dropping positivity rate and significant number of vaccinations being administered. Little did we know, vaccination rates would slow, and the highly contagious COVID-19 Delta variant would soon overtake its predecessor and begin to drive cases and hospitalizations right back up within a matter of weeks. According to a recent National Restaurant Association (NRA) survey, nearly six in ten adults have changed their restaurant use habits due to the rise of the Delta variant; 19% of adults have stopped going to restaurants and 37% of adults are opting to order takeout or delivery instead of going to restaurants in-person. These findings come on the heels of a Salve Regina University study commissioned by the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA) on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to the state’s hospitality and tourism industry in 2020, which revealed a small restaurant business loss of $2.2 billion last year, representing a 30% overall drop from the previous year.

RIHA, the National Restaurant Association, and 50 other state restaurant association partners, recently sent a letter to congressional leadership sharing these new national consumer confidence survey findings, asking them to provide adequate funds to replenish the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF) and offer relief for the applications still pending. Rhode Island has more than 1,523 pending applications that total more than $208,933,000 in stabilization funding that would be addressed by the $60 billion proposed replenishment bills. According to the aforementioned Salve Regina-RIHA study, lodging, meetings and events, and tourism and attractions, were most significantly impacted in 2020, with decreases typically ranging between 40% and 60%. While those numbers are sure to have decreased in 2021, we have already seen planned in-person events begin to reinstate capacity limits, shift to virtual models, reschedule for the future, or cancel plans altogether. This type of disruption is likely to have a ripple effect throughout the entire hospitality industry with our hotels expected occupancy rates set to decrease, tourist destinations attracting less visitors than expected, restaurants serving fewer guests, and locals staying home more. Without more funding, many industry businesses will succumb to their losses and are likely to permanently close as a result. Countless operators have already taken on a massive amount of personal debt in an effort to retain and incentivize staff, adapt to changing public health guidance, and to maintain inventory and offerings. Unfortunately, not all of our businesses have survived the pandemic, and the longer we go without additional relief, the more that will be forced to shut down. For over a year and a half, our industry has displayed resilience and resolve despite the barrage of unfortunate and oftentimes unforeseen circumstances that have made our lives increasingly difficult. As we approach the final stretch of 2021, awaiting additional federal relief for our industry, the name of the game is the same as it has been since March of 2020: survival at any cost.

CANTONESE DUCK

Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails This is basically my Cantonese chicken recipe, which I based on my love of Peking duck. But, for whatever reason, I never tried this recipe on duck before. Recently, I went home to Long Island to visit my Mom, and I stopped by one of the great food stores of my life: Miloski’s Poultry Farm in Calverton, NY. I’ve been coming to Miloski’s since I was a kid. My Dad would buy his ducks there and Grandpa Miloski, the guy that started it all, would serve us. Over the years, grandpa made way for his son, and now the son is retired and the grandson has taken over the business. All along the way, one thing hasn’t changed: the excellent quality of their product. My uncle Antanas passed away years ago, but when it came to being a true foodie, this guy put all others to shame. Besides being the only hunter in our family (my first taste of venison was at his table) he had several huge freezers in the basement of his Richmond Hill, Queens, home back in the day. He would drive to Miloski’s and buy 50 ducks at a time, and bring them home to freeze. Very often, after I finished Lithuanian school on a Saturday, my uncle would invite our family over for dinner, and we’d all sit around a massive table

where no less than 5 ducks would be cooked and served, along with all the fixings. That’s just a taste of my Miloski memories. I try to stop at Miloski’s every time I pass through. I bring cash, because Miloski’s doesn’t take credit cards! I have a long ride home, first on the Cross Sound ferry from Orient Point to New London, CT…and then an hour-and-a-half on the highway from there. I bring a cooler and I buy a bag of ice along the way. Miloski’s sells all kinds of exotic meats, like wild boar and ostrich. But I go for their delicious kielbasa, pierogis, and now: duck! Can you get salmonella from duck? In a word: depends! It used to be that salmonella was only found in the intestinal tracts of chickens. But because ducks are often raised in areas where chicken live, cross-contamination is very possible. Even if the birds live totally separate lives, cross-contamination can also happen in slaughterhouses. So…despite the fact that many say you can eat duck meat that’s pink, I prefer not to. I’ll tell you this: there’s quite a bit of fat in an average duck, so even if you cook the bird to medium-well, it will be delicious and juicy….and the skin will be fantastically crispy.

Remove all the giblets from the bird and cook them up for your dog, like I do for my buddy, Fellow. (Leave out anything with bones, of course.)

Rub the soy sauce first all over the duck. (It will absorb the flavors better if you do it before you rub the bird with the oil.) Then rub the peanut oil all over the duck.

Combine the Chinese five spice, garlic, salt and pepper in a bowl. Season the entire bird, including inside the cavity, with this mixture.

Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Place the duck in a pan lined with aluminum foil (cleanup will be easier.)

Reduce the oven temperature to 250 once you put the duck in the oven, and then cook it low and slow for up to 4 hours…or more.

Combine the hoisin sauce and sesame oil in a small bowl. When the duck is about 15 minutes away from being done, brush it with the hoisin/sesame oil mixture. Cook it another 15 minutes until the bird has a nice dark glaze.

Let the duck rest about 15 minutes before carving. Shop In RI 17

The Biggest Smallest Brewery in the State! The General's Crossing Brewhouse in Jamestown has big plans for the upcoming season. By Mark Berger

The explosion of home brewing resulted in new concoctions, flavors, and mixed drinks. Some are bold and dark, while others are lighter and smooth. There are many choices to make when finding the perfect beer or ale made from scratch. Then, the pandemic hit and made the hobby (for most) difficult, if not impossible. It was not easy for people to get the supplies necessary to complete the brewing process. Only essential businesses could remain open,with restrictions mandated by state and federal regulations. Fortunately, breweries were deemed “essential” by the state and could continue serving the public. One such place is The General’s Crossing Brewhouse, located on 34 Narragansett Ave., in Jamestown. shop,Conanicut Brewing. The Brewery is the collective brainchild of head brewer,Will Tuttle, and his business partner, Tom McNiff. They wanted to start a business several years ago that highlighted home brewing and share their knowledge with others. Their brews run the taste and smell ranges from stout to light and have the ability to serve quickly. Tuttle said that there are opportunities to decide what people like when they visit. “We often have a variety of brews available on tap,” said Tuttle, who along with McNiff, have two other part-time employees who serve up the good times. “People can purchase a flight of four beers to sample in a pub-like atmosphere and can decide on their favorite one,” he added. How they were able fit all of the tanks and equipment into their space was an achievement in

itself. That said, they create their stock one barrel at a time. Their process takes up to two weeks to complete before it can be served publicly. They can brew up to 31 gallons at a time. Tuttle likes to say that their product is the freshest possible beer into glass because they don’t need to transfer their products into a keg. One particular drink the Brewery is known for is their Honey Hibiscus Wit. Tuttle describes this drink as a pink colored, floral-smelling beverage that is by far the most popular selection in the brewery. They need to keep producing it because it sells out quickly. While it was a nice surprise and having created something that resonates with patrons,Tuttle explained that choice wasn’t what he believed would be tops. “We created an American Pale

Ale that we thought would be our flagship drink,” he said. “Instead, we found that many of the customers who ordered the Hibiscus Beer were men. It ’s unlike anything else that ’s available around here. It has 5.2 percent alcohol so you can have a couple of them before going out to dinner.” While they have indoor seating, Tuttle is excited about the recently-opened outdoor seating in their back patio that seats up to 15 people. They hope to keep that section open long into the fall months. There is another group they hope to attract. “ Tom is also the head coach for the University of Rhode Island Rugby team,” Tuttle said. “We have a few area teams who stop by after the games. We’re hoping that word of mouth spreads for other groups or teams passing by

George Washington crossed over to the west side of the island in 1781, by Ferry Road (now Narragansett Ave.). Washington was on his way to Virginia to plan the final battles of The Revolutionary War. “Had there been a tavern here in 1781, he may have stopped in for a pint!” Tuttle mused. Like many companies, 2020 proved to be challenging for The General’s Crossing. They were fine until St. Patrick’s Day, when businesses had to close until June. They were concerned about their status until the state deemed them “essential,” meaning they could stay open and serve the public. With a to-go option and curbside service, they were able to maintain continuity. They were

then able to build steadily until most restrictions were lifted. Tuttle has some sage advice for those considering trying their hand in creating their own beer. “Give someone a beer and they’ll waste an hour. Teach them to brew and they’ll waste a lifetime. Here, you can either make your own or I can do the work for you,” he said. The Brewery is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 pm to 8:00, and closed on Tuesday. Why People Don’t Like To Exercise By Susan Gazerro

Those who are committed to exercise and have made it a priority in their life often wonder, with all the benefits exercise offers, why do people not like it? After all, the benefits of exercise have been proven time and again. I will say as I’ve said many times before, it’s about being healthy. Weight loss is a fringe benefit. However, the reality is that 80% of Americans are not getting the recommended daily exercise they should. More alarming is that 25% aren’t getting any exercise at all. Moving your body is essential. My opinion is that people think of exercise as a chore and not something fun. It’s an effort for a lot of people. I wish people would believe that the benefits of exercise on a regular basis are numerous and far outweigh the negatives. By performing some form of exercise regularly for just a short time each day, you will increase your energy, improve your mood, reduce stress, and yes, lose weight! You will also improve your immune system function, which will lead to less common illnesses, as well as lowering your risk for more serious illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. as it helps you to focus, and not being stressed helps you deal with all other aspects in your life. Many people lack the motivation to start an exercise routine. Does any of this sound familiar: you may view exercise as something that is too much work, too boring, or something that is just not for you? Perhaps you have tried exercising in the past and were met with failure, or you quit because you did not enjoy it? If your goal is weight loss, which most of the time is the reason people exercise, and if you do not see the weight coming off fast enough, you give up. This is why I say that it is not about weight loss. It is about being healthy. Do this for your health. If you do it for weight loss, it becomes a chore. Many people think that in order to exercise regularly, they have to join an expensive gym or invest in expensive fitness equipment for their home. This couldn’t be further from the truth. All you need is your body and your brain to tell your body to move! Walking, hiking, running, or riding a bicycle outside, are free ways to exercise and can also be a lot of fun. If you have a workout buddy or friend, it becomes even more fun, as it becomes a social event and not a workout task.

Smaller, less expensive pieces of equipment such as an exercise ball and small dumbbells can be used for a variety of exercises to strengthen and tone many parts of the body. There are many videos online that are free, from which you can get a great workout. The most common reason people give for not exercising is that they simply do not have the time for it. I love this excuse. My answer to this is you have time for everything and everyone else, but not for you and your health. Especially for women, when you make this time for yourself and start feeling better, you become a better wife, a better mom, a better friend, etc. - because you are happier! You may see exercise as something that takes away from time with your spouse and children, or as something that cannot be done given the hours you work. Wrong! Add just 30 minutes in the morning and kick start your day with something that benefits your health. Once you do this, you will not understand how you weren’t doing it all along. The world becomes a better place. While finding the time is a legitimate challenge for many people, doing so may actually help you with your other time-consuming activities by increasing your energy and lowering your stress levels. Changing your mindset and gradually finding a way to work exercise into your daily routine, will make you feel better in the long run. If you do not have a solid 30 minutes to exercise in the morning, find three 10 minute segments in which you can exercise. Find ways to add a little extra time into your day and build exercise into that period. Here are some tips to help you get started, but I can preach on and on. YOU have to WANT this. A lot of overweight or unhealthy people will say they are happy. Are they really? All you have to do is wake up and say, “today is the day I am going to start doing this for me.” I promise you will feel better both mentally and physically. • Set short-term, attainable goals for yourself so you will quickly see results and success. • Find workouts that suit your interests and lifestyle. Perhaps a daily trip to the gym is not

for you. You may enjoy walking or trying out a group fitness class or exercise video. • If you are easily bored, change your workout frequently and vary the exercises you do to help avoid redundancy which can lead to boredom. • Work with a personal trainer who can help design a program that best meets your needs and will give you results. A trainer can also help develop a routine that fits into your schedule. • If you have kids and no sitter, include them. Take a bike ride, walk with them, play tag, have them sit and count the number of jumping jacks, squats, and pushups you do. It will amaze you how you want to do more because they are holding you accountable. •Schedule a time each day for exercise. Write it in your planner and stick to it. Still, people will find reasons to not exercise. Being healthy may cost money and time, but being sick and in a hospital costs even more money and maybe even your health. Stay healthy!

Harmony Railway at Harmony Products By Jenn Lombari

Take a ride into the pines on the one and only Harmony Railway. Located in scenic Chepachet, RI, the Harmony Railway is a ‘labor of love’ created by Chepachet native, Russ Gross. Located on the same beautiful land since the 19th century, the Gross Family Farm has produced many specialized products over the years - small dairy, woodlot, vegetable farm, and orchard, but one thing that has always stayed the same is the natural beauty of the land. Scheduled to open last year around Memorial Day, COVID-19 hit and Gross experienced many delays including labor and materials. With great anticipation, he was able to open the doors in November 2020. Despite the pandemic, Harmony Railway opened to a very enthusiastic public. Because it was an outdoor activity, people were able to social distance and the train has been rolling ever since. The train runs on diesel and holds a maximum capacity of 18 people, one per seat. However, children and smaller adults can easily sit two per seat. The builder made it so that each seat can hold a maximum of 350 lbs, making it easy 32 Shop In RI

to accommodate adults and children. The train was built in Texas by a private railroad company. The train engine and cars were shipped up from Texas on a 48 foot tractor trailer. The track was engineered and laid entirely by Russ, himself, a train enthusiast since he was a young boy. To be able to pull this off has been a dream come true. He estimates that for each 100 feet of track laid, he walked back and forth the equivalent of ten miles. So his labor of laying the half mile track was equal to about 260 miles on his feet; approximately the distance from Chepachet to Augusta, ME. The present track configuration was planned to make use of the naturally existing beauty of the property, while disturbing as little as possible. Harmony Railway will be able to make changes to the present route in the future, as the entire property consists of many more acres to be enjoyed. In the future, the plan is to extend the route and incorporate a water feature that is on the property. A steam engine is also something Russ hopes to acquire. In keeping with tradition, when you want to ride on a train, you need to purchase a ticket!

The gift shop/retail store, Harmony Products, doubles as a ticket counter and souvenir shop. Inside, you will find many train themed items to complement the other items in the shop. Harmony Railway Teddy Bears are available for purchase and they make great gifts. These cuddly and adorable bears come dressed in a train conductor outfit and are super soft. They also come as raccoons, dogs, and other animals. There are 12 local artisans who share their items on consignment. Here, you will find a collection of everything from handmade jewelry, designer tapestry bags, artsy t-shirts, handcrafted wood items, and a variety of original artwork. Additionally, there are several retail vendors, notably, USDA certified maple syrup from New Hampshire, organic gourmet cranberry items from Cape Cod, and a local favorite, Nettie’s Kettle Corn! Owner and Engineer, Russ, wears many hats and is the apiary expert, tending to multiple beehives on the property. These beehives are home to about 350,000 bees and provide them with fresh honey that is also sold in the gift shop. The bees supply the shop with hundreds of pounds of honey for customers to enjoy. Honey is extracted and bottled several times per year. It is a passion that is very time consuming and a lot of work, but delicious and especially rewarding. There is no shortage of handmade soaps and lotions, either. You could shop for yourself, coworkers, family, friends, and then for yourself, again! How thoughtful and unique to curate an entire gift basket for someone made up entirely of locally constructed items. Toys and teddy bears, candy of all kinds, food, clothing, wellness products… gift certificates are also available. And why not grab a train ticket for that gift basket while you are there? Jump-Starting Retirement Plans for Small Businesses By Edward Pontarelli Jr. If you are among the nation’s more than 31 million small businesses owners, you likely spend much of your time juggling day-to-day activities of your business. While handling the here-and-now, it can be easy to put off planning for the future. If retirement planning has fallen on your back burner, it’s time to bring it to your forefront. As a small business owner, you deal with a different world of retirement plans than somebody who is employed in a more conventional manner – making it all the more important to closely explore your options when deciding what’s right for you.

Plan options to consider

Self-employed individuals or business owners should be sure to fund IRAs as much as possible. In 2021, the annual limit for 2021 is $6,000 ($7,000 for those age 50 and up). Funding IRAs is only a starting point. Here are a few other options for business owners to consider:

Solo 401(k)s

This offshoot of the traditional 401(k) plan can be established if you – or you and your spouse – are the only employees of your business. It offers the ability to direct the largest potential contribution annually. As much as $58,000 can be set-aside in 2021 ($62,500 for those age 50 and older). This comes from a combination of employer and employee contributions. There are initial costs and efforts needed to start and maintain the plan as it requires a plan administrator. Earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis and contributions made by an incorporated business can be deducted from business expenses. For non-incorporated businesses, the owner can deduct contributions from their personal income. For those with employees, a full 401(k) plan can be established, though different rules will apply.

SEP IRAs

This is very similar in structure to Solo 401(k)s with two main exceptions. Costs are minimal as it does not require the support of a plan administrator and it can cover employees. In this plan, all contributions are made by the employer equal to no more than 25 percent of compensation or a maximum of $58,000 in 2021. The employer can determine what percentage of compensation to set aside each year, but it must be consistent for all employees, including the owner.

SIMPLE Plans

These plans allow businesses with fewer than 100 employees to establish either a SIMPLE IRA or SIMPLE 401k for each employee. Employees can make salary deferral contributions of up to $13,500 ($16,500 for those 50 and older) in 2021. Employers are obligated to provide a matching contribution in SIMPLE 401ks of three percent of compensation for employees who elected to defer or two percent for employees who did not elect to make contributions.

Of course, monetizing the value of your business may be another way you fund your retirement. If your business can continue to operate successfully without you, then it should have value when it comes time to retire. Ideally, planning for any kind of business transition should start years before a sale occurs. Selling your business to a current employee may be one option to consider, or you may want to look for potential outside buyers. As a business owner, you have unique challenges – and opportunities – when it comes to planning for a successful retirement. Six Questions to Help You Make Your Open Enrollment Selections By: Carrie McPherson

In the fall, many employers offer an open enrollment period – a window of time to select your benefits package for the coming year. It’s easy to overlook this opportunity and maintain the status quo, but this could be a costly mistake given the significant role benefits play in your financial life. This year resolve to review your options with a fresh perspective. Consider the following six questions to get started:

1. Have you experienced a major life change recently? If you’re on the verge of having a child, recently had a child graduate from college and enter the workforce, or the job status of you or your spouse has changed, reconsider your health insurance options to accommodate your current situation. If you are experiencing or anticipating major health expenses, you might decide to choose a health plan with a lower deductible. Or perhaps you may decide you are better off paying a lower monthly premium with a higher deductible.

2. How do your employer’s benefits selections compare to those offered through your spouse’s employer? Employers change their offerings from time to time, so make it a priority to compare your options every year. If = or opting you’re considering changing healthcare providers in for legal assistance, check to see if the professionals you currently work with are covered under the new plans. If not, consider the cost and whether you want to work with someone new as you make your decisions.

3. Is a Health Savings Account (HSA) worth considering? If you choose a high deductible health plan, you may be able to set up a Health Savings Account (HSA). With an HSA, you contribute pre-tax dollars into the account. The money can be used to pay out-of-pocket costs (such as deductibles and co-pays for medical services) that are not covered by your health insurance.

4. Is there value in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA)? Out-of-pocket costs not covered by insurance, ranging from deductibles and copays to prescription drugs, eyeglasses and dental work, can be reimbursed through an FSA. By directing pre-tax dollars into this account, you can reduce your net out-of-pocket costs. However, unlike 46 Shop In RI

HSAs, these dollars do not carry over from year to year. Any leftover money is lost, so you’ll want to plan in advance to determine an appropriate amount to save in the account.

5. Are there other benefits I should contemplate? Benefit options vary by employer. Depending on where you work, you might have the ability to enroll in benefits such as dental coverage, eye exams, legal assistance, term life insurance or other specific services that may be useful. Carefully weigh these options to see if they are cost effective.

6. What are your financial goals? Kick off open enrollment season by reviewing your financial goals. If you’re married, talk to your spouse and realign on key priorities for the next year. Having a clear vision can help you evaluate benefit options with your lifestyle and financial situation for the coming year at the forefront. The New Realtors on the Block

June Realty in East Greenwich began during the pandemic and looks to serve their community. by Mark Berger

Events during the last 18 months have given some people the incentive to go in another direction professionally. Their job may have been eliminated and they adjusted to starting their own business. Others just needed a chance to explore other interests and went that way. Some may have benefited from the chance to become superstars in their company from the start. For one group of realtors who have been together for years, the uncertainty led them to bond professionally on a deeper level and they decided to form a new company based on their vast real estate expertise. June Realty, located on 7 Franklin Road in East Greenwich, began as a five-agent endeavor who spent years working at other area firms before embarking on this new business venture. Led by Principal Broker Michael Pereira, the firm works with clients on finding residential properties statewide. The other realtors/ partners in the group include: Josh West, Samantha Durand, Paula Gallant, and Christina Israel. They created a referral-based premise that has resulted in 48 Shop In RI

successful efforts. “The opportunity presented itself to set up in East Greenwich; there’s plenty to see and do here,” said West, on choosing their location. “We work together so the rest of us can pitch in when the lead realtor is unavailable. We are a full-service boutique agency that wants its clients to feel valued and heard during their home buying or selling process. Customer service is at the forefront for us. It’s more than just a transaction, it’s a life-long relationship.” The first step to homeownership is ensuring their clients are pre-approved for a mortgage. It is important to know what they qualify for and what their monthly mortgage payments would look like. Knowing that beforehand enables the parties to focus on where to look and the range they are comfortable handling. It also demonstrates a buyer’s commitment. The next step would be looking for a home. That becomes tricky because inventory has been significantly low over the last year-plus. West noted

that they have about 1,000 properties on MLS, which is the Multiple Listing Service, where all homes are listed, statewide. In a normal environment, realtors have several thousand homes to offer. This causes a seller’s market with multiple bids and offers— making it difficult for people to move. Although sellers are in the driver’s seat, they aren’t so much if they also need to find a home. One suggestion he made was buying the new home first, then selling the existing home. That would help solve both issues—assuming everything goes according to plan. “While there are plenty of available resources out there to figure out a home’s value, hiring a realtor makes the most sense,” West explained. “People can use the Internet to find out how much their house may be worth,” West said. “However, the Internet will not know how much other homes in their neighborhood sold for; it won’t know the town’s environment such as schools, facilities, and amenities. A good realtor will know all of these things and advocate for the purchaser or seller in ways the Internet won’t.” Another reason to use a realtor would be for advice on displaying the home. They could mention the outside area having “curb appeal” with trimmed shrubbery, and grass mowed and that inside, the home should be decluttered and look like a house and not a home. Other tips for buying a home include: saving money for the down payment and the first several mortgage payments. Doing the research beforehand will help with understanding the market to determine price ranges that can be expected.

West encourages simplicity over complexity. “A fresh coat of paint can work wonders for the newness of a home. Fixing the floors and cracks would be a costsaving option as opposed to installing new floors. People forget that just because they rebuild their homes, does not often translate into more money in the sale. A refresh is usually the better option,” he explained. Since they opened their doors earlier this year, they hired another agent, Courtney Perry. Their hope during the next several months would be to meet more people seeking to find a new home or sell their current one. The market will eventually become level so they want their clients to take advantage of state and federal incentives and grant programs. Can I Paint Without Sanding? My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting(www.LopcoContracting. com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Perhaps the most painstaking part of painting, whether exterior or interior, is the prep work. “Finish” painting is the easy part. Many folks say that painting is extraordinarily therapeutic, peaceful, almost Zen-like. Chances are, those with these opinions are not referring to the prep portion of their projects. It is not unusual to contemplate whether sanding should be involved with the prep process for your particular project. With few exceptions, sanding is almost ALWAYS necessary. The reason being is that by sanding, you not only eliminate roughness and set the stage for the magnificent paint or stain system you are about to apply, but by doing so, you also allow the surface to be in a position to “hold” your coating system in place for a long time to come. On the exterior, sanding is often necessary to eliminate the edges of peeling paint, and to make sure that unsightly imperfections are as limited as possible. On the interior, sanding is necessary to smooth out plaster, joint compound, or spackling that has been applied, to allow for “bite” in between coatings of paint or polyurethane, or scuffing up older finishes to cut down glossiness. If there is lead paint present (most notably on homes built prior to 1978), it is generally advised that sanding should never be done, unless by a certified professional who has the proper equipment to appropriately work with lead paint removal. Another instance where sanding should not be done is with certain types of wood decking, and the deck finishes that are associated with them. This is because by sanding certain types of wood that already have tightly dense wood grains to begin with (Ipe as an example), sanding these surfaces would cause the wood grain to tighten up even further, and as crazy as it may seem, prevent any stain applied to its surface (seemingly no matter how thin the stain may be) to correctly penetrate. As far as what we are all traditionally taught in terms of preparing surfaces, this may appear to be quite the ‘Catch 22!’ There are other nuanced situations where sanding would not make sense, however; these are the exceptions, rather than

the rule. To properly prepare any surface that you will be painting or staining, sanding should be in your plan, in some capacity, nearly 100% of the time. When sanding, it is important to not only use the proper equipment, but to also wear the proper personal protection (the correct dust mask, eye protection, etc.) that is necessary to help protect you from harm. When sanding, there are different “grits” associated with the variety of sandpaper you may use. The higher the grit, the smoother the sandpaper (typically used for final sanding or tasks that do not need as rough a paper). The lower the grit, the rougher the paper (typically for tasks that require a “heavier hand” – i.e., exterior surface prep). It is easy(with good reason) to envision the idea of sanding as being an excruciating task that is neither fun nor relaxing. While some types of sanding are certainly more of a workout than others, the fact that the act of sanding is an overall vital part of the surface preparation process when it comes to painting, may be the unfortunate realization for any lazy bone that may be approaching a painting project and desires it to come out as best as possible. The Term Paper A thrilling novel by local author Steven Gareau. By Jennifer Coates

He had just come off one of those adrenaline-pumping sailboat races that leave you breathless, and headed straight to the pub to celebrate. The sailboat’s captain, Sam Garrison, was riding high ~ he was newly in love, had just sold a lucrative business, and was on the threshold of a world of wide-open possibilities. What Garrison didn’t know then was that the life he had planned was not the life that now lay before him ~ and it all began with the resurrection of an old, seemingly innocent term paper that he had written twenty years earlier while in college. Sam Garrison sounds like someone you might know. He is steady, smart, ambitious, as well as relatable. He loves politics, yet views them with a heavy dose of cynicism and criticism. One might say he is a scholar of “all things politics” ~ and not just partisan politics. He is an observer of history, more specifically, our nation’s complex governmental history. As a young college student, Garrison had written a term paper that he thought was a relatively innocuous expose` on the flaws of a two-party government system. What made that paper so memorable was how prophetic it turned out to be. It hypothesized that the two-party system that had long stood as the bastion of democracy, was susceptible to fraud, abuse, and rampant corruption. He proposed that a third party, such as the one represented by the late Ross Perot, was needed to watch over the better parts of the two-party system. This was essentially needed to “keep each party honest.” When we first meet Sam, we learn that twenty years after the composition of that term paper, four students at American University have presented a separate paper which outlines a few theories of their own on the government’s structure. The difference between Garrison’s analysis and the radical ideas of these students is that they have conceived of an idea that will destroy America and its foundational standard bearer, the Constitution, from within. For those who haven’t figured it out yet, Sam Garrison is a fictional character ~ the conceptualization of Johnston resident and political aficionado, Steven Gareau. In a style that might resemble author Tom Clancy, Gareau has written a fast-paced 68 Shop In RI

novel of intrigue, suspense, and pulsating twists and turns that take you from the classrooms of a prestigious college to the halls of the very center of our republic, our nation’s Capitol. There are numerous characters who help Garrison with this tale of mystery and suspense, all of whom are based on real-life characters and real-life friends of Gareau. There is Garrison’s flame, Bethany Johnson (aka “BJ”), and his old high school friend and cohort, Stan Grisson. There are leery and cautious professors, and secretive men driving government-issued vehicles and lurking in the shadows, tracing Sam’s footsteps across the country. There are the four young students, one of whom meets a tragic and suspicious death. And of course, the main character is the “term paper” itself, the focus of government officials and the inspiration for the four student authors and instigators. The plot of this captivating story begins on those rocky waters off the Massachusetts coastline and winds back and forth across the country, from Savannah (home of Garrison’s and Gareau’s old naval base) to Palm Springs (where long unprotected roads stretch far into the horizon) to Alexandria and Washington DC. The reader is drawn into scenarios between Garrison and those who wish to protect him, between those who wish him harm, and those who love him. One follows along as the connection between Garrison and

these four young students is explored, as they all face great danger from those threatened by their written words, both twenty years ago and today in the 21st century. Though not autobiographical, Gareau’s own voice is heard throughout the novel. He, like Garrison, is a successful businessman, USAF veteran, athlete, sailor, political guru, and loving partner. He, like Garrison, is a student of politics, who also loves dissecting the structure of our government, examining all its flaws, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities. Unlike Garrison, however, is the fact that Gareau suffered a stroke during triple bypass surgery in 2017, while he was in the middle of writing his novel. What began in 2015, was later completed with grit, determination, and an urgent desire to “beat the clock” and get his novel published, as history was beginning to imitate art all too realistically in real life. The idea of Gareau’s book had been mulling around in his head for several decades. Readers may find it uncanny how he was able to predict some of today’s more controversial national events with such accuracy, long before many of them happened. Gareau’s novel is fittingly entitled The Term Paper. East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce: The Backbone of the EG Business Community! By Mark Berger Most people will agree that 2021 has been better in many ways more than in the previous year. Much has written and said about the pandemic pertaining to the social and economic consequences it caused. What happened next were stories of people helping people, communities banding together and government agencies and organizations explored ways of keeping their respective cities and towns from being swept away from bankruptcy and closures. One such organization, the East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, located on 580 Main St., remains proactive in providing comfort, necessary services and assistance to the business community. Their process enabled area establishments to thrive during a time where the only real certainty was uncertainty. “Chambers around the state and across the country really stepped up and demonstrated how much of an impact they can have in their area,” said EG Chamber Executive Director Stephen Lombardi. “I remember Friday, March 13, 2020 like it was yesterday. I was having dinner at an EG Chamber restaurant and we saw on the television the NBA (National Basketball Association), the NHL (National Hockey League) and other national organizations were shutting down. It wasn't long before places closed down locally. We pivoted as a community as restaurants offered takeout, curbside pickup and delivery options to stay open. Gift cards became another successful endeavor. We did try to connect merchants with customers. “People took this challenge head on and embraced what the town's merchants were doing to remain open.”

“I truly believe that 2020 was one of the most important years in the 92-year history of East Greenwich Chamber. By and large, that might have been true of all chambers.” As the pandemic raged on last year, the EG Chamber became the face of the area. In association with the Town of East Greenwich and RI Commerce, the EG Chamber provided local business owners with PPE resources such as masks, gloves, sanitizers and other materials for employers, employees and customers to remain safe. SBA (Small Business Association) loans were also another aspect the Chamber staff helped out navigating. It did not matter what the issue or concern was; the EG Chamber worked to ensure that questions were answered as quickly as possible. Lombardi, who has been in his current position since July 2010, said the town has plenty to offer residents and visitors alike. He noted New England Tech opened around the time he began his tenure at the EG Chamber. Lombardi, who was past President of the University of Rhode Island Alumni Association, also noted that URI has also being very involved in providing valuable information to the community. Lombardi said East Greenwich is a small town with plenty to do. This includes: strolling down Main Street and visiting its waterfront, recreational areas, as well as historic buildings and sites. He stressed that there are many businesses all around East Greenwich, not just around Main Street.

“We are a relatively small community with a population of about 13,000. We put on numerous events on Main Street to highlight our small businesses and highlight them and encourage people to visit.”

Lombardi added that the EG Chamber considered consolidating with the North Kingstown Chamber at one point in 2010. Despite the idea, the Board of Directors ultimately chose to remain on their own. The reasoning behind staying a separate entity was keeping its focus on East Greenwich. Since then, they have built a solid relationship with the business community and the residents in showing why they have become a trusted resource. In the final analysis, Lombardi said the Board wanted to “buck the trend” of being absorbed into another Chamber and lose its identity in the process. “Our community understands the importance of having a local chamber because of how it can improve the quality of life and promote East Greenwich as a business destination,” he said. They are busy doing in-person events and already have several happening throughout the fall. The EG Chamber just completed its Restaurant Week. Now, the EG Chamber is planning its Small Business Saturday in November and the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at Town Hall in December. They are already planning for a monstrous 2022.

Lombardi noted there are benefits to becoming a Chamber member that extend beyond personal and professional levels. Membership benefits the business community as a whole. “For a small investment, your company will be promoted on our Chamber’s website and Chamber’s directory. It will be seen as supporting the small business community. Besides that, there is a certainly amount of publicity, credibility and goodwill that comes with becoming a Chamber member. Many factors contribute plaguing auto dealers, who struggle to meet customer demand for used vehicles. Toyota of Smithfield asks vehicle owners to consider trading them in for more efficient models to offset the shortfall. General Manager John Durrani hopes those looking for inventory to bring in their used car and take advantage of new dealer incentives. “We give anyone coming in with their used or certified pre-owned cars an additional $1,000 over book value,” he said. “There isn’t a better time for anybody to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more than its ever going to be worth.” The dealership has back orders for weeks and sometimes months on some models. Durrani said the market has been “pretty crazy”. With few cars on their lots, the call for trade-ins has become crucial. Durrani said people have the means to either purchase a new vehicle or one of the very few remaining used cars. That stems from several rounds of stimulus checks federal and state governments mailed to families. The ask continues to because of increased demands.

“There is a strong need for used vehicles, but we simply don’t have the inventory to accommodate them,” Durrani said. April 27 was a day of beginnings and endings for these three men as the final signatures were penned on the “purchase of sale” that officially transferred ownership of Precision Collision from Pelosi to Gibb and Smith. The show featured classic cars for car enthusiasts along with food trucks, raffles, face painting and kid’s activities (for future car enthusiasts!) What set “Cruisin’ for a Cause” apart from other similar car shows was the purpose that rested at the very heart of its planning and expectations. All the proceeds from this special event, which exceeded $9,500, went to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in honor of Tim Gibb’s brother Keith. Keith, whose passion for automobiles began as a child, succumbed to juvenile diabetes at the young age of 47 after a lifelong battle with the disease. Keith left behind a devoted extended family, including three children. Tim and Keith, who shared a mutual love of cars and knack for mechanics, were extremely close. The car show, which happened on a sunny Sunday in September, marked the one-year anniversary of his passing. This family fun car show was dedicated to Keith and to all those who suffer from Juvenile Diabetes.

All contributions to the event will help further research into this debilitating illness that affects children of all ages and, as of date, has no cure.
