The process of bringing food from “farm to table” looks something like this. First, in partnership with the agency, farmers donate food. It all starts right here, in the fields. Volunteers, who are fully insured and supervised by experienced staff, come to the farms where they gather food that would otherwise go to waste. The process of “recovering” these surplus crops is known as “gleaning,” and those who harvest them are known as “gleaners.” The act of “gleaning” is an ancient practice that has roots in the days of the Old Testament, documented in the Books of Ruth, Deuteronomy, and Leviticus. It was required of farmers at that time to leave the “corners of their fields unharvested,” that they should not “pick up that which was dropped,” and that those unused crops should be left “for the poor and for strangers.” The imagery of the widow Naomi and her daughter-in-law Ruth, bent over and working the earth to provide sustenance for their families and neighbors, is a beautiful parallel to what happens in the abundant fields of Rhode Island. Hope’s Harvest RI is based on the promise that gleaning “strengthens our local food system and makes our communities less dependent on commodity food shipped from thousands of miles
away instead of what’s in our own backyard.” After volunteer gleaners have gathered all that is left of the harvest, the next phase of “to the table” continues. This is where the mission of Hope’s Harvest RI reaps its greatest rewards and fulfills its mission ~ when this food makes its way to hunger relief organizations across the region. Vegetables and fruits, freshly picked and locally sourced, are delivered to food pantries and other sites where they are distributed to those who need the most basic of human rights: food. Hope’s Harvest RI has a devoted, committed corps of staff, including Eva and her Volunteer Coordinator, Merl Shuster, but the agency relies heavily on the generous time of volunteer gleaners. If you are interested in offering your time and energy to this great cause, many unseen faces and hungry bodies will benefit greatly. To learn how you can help, visit their informative website at www.hopesharvestri.org to register, sign the necessary waivers and be notified of upcoming gleaning trips.

If you have ever driven down Route 138 in Portsmouth, past the verdant, rolling hills and misty farmlands of the island, you have surely passed one of the city’s hidden gems, the Old Almy Village plaza. This plaza of boutiques, a restaurant, salons, a specialty gourmet food store and even a “medical spa,” offers something to satisfy something off of everyone’s “wish list.” In many ways, it could be called a “one-stop shop” for those looking for everything from a good, old-fashioned hot meal to a new outfit to wear out on the town, a gift for that special grandchild in your life, a bit of milk, honey or cheese, a new hairdo or manicure and a soothing, much-needed massage ~ all in one convenient place!

FALL FITNESS By Susan Gazerro
Fall is a new beginning. We all get into the mindset of “routine. So how do we fit our routine of exercise in? Well, without the heat and humidity, outdoor workouts become much more comfortable, especially here in New England. Fall comes with potential challenges. Taking some time from your day are the kids, who may require more attention to get them off to school in the morning, and evenings are spent helping them with homework, cooking dinner and performing all of your other motherly duties. Furthermore, holidays are on the way, and planning for them will cut more time from your day. Lastly, daylight is shorter due to daylight saving time, leaving us with even less time for ourselves. Even with all these obstacles, you can always find a way to fit exercise, or what I call movement, into your day. Following are some workouts and tips to keep up the momentum through the winter. Walking is just about the easiest way to exercise outside and a great way to get that extra movement in throughout the day. You have to keep moving. With cooler weather, it will be more comfortable to walk, compared to the summer when the sun is beating down on you. All you really need is a good pair of walking shoes, and perhaps, some fall weather gear to keep you warm, dry and protected.
32 Shop In RI
Make it a habit to walk every day. Start your day with a walk, or head out when you get home from work, as walking can help to destress. Maybe a walk after dinner is a good way to help you digest. Find a friend to keep one another motivated and walk everyday. Another great fall activity is hiking. Hiking burns mega-calories as you increase your elevation and it really works the legs. During your hike, take in as much scenery as possible to make it even more enjoyable. Just a few reasons to add hiking to your routine: Hiking is a great fall exercise! Hiking covers multiple areas of fitness: Not only do you strengthen your muscles by climbing, but your cardio endurance increases, as well. Walking or hiking up an incline gets your heart rate up, helping you burn calories and get fit. Hiking also works multiple muscle groups: glutes, quads, hamstrings, calves, core, and the feet.
If you’re a beginner, start with about 3 days of exercise per week. Do more if you can, but always start where you are, rather than where you want to be. Ease your body and mind into your new exercise schedule to minimize the risk of injury, and add on as you become more comfortable and more confident.
Rounding out the top outdoor fall activities is running. Fall is probably the best time of year for running outdoors. It’s not too hot, not too cold, and watching the leaves change colors each time you head outside can make each workout a new adventure. Dress accordingly and go for a run. If you are not a runner, but would like to try, here’s a way to get started. Run from one telephone pole to the next, then walk pole to pole, then run from pole to pole. As you get more comfortable, run to two poles, walk to one, etc. This builds your cardio endurance and eventually you will be running three plus miles a day.
There are three times every year when people are most likely to commit to work out and get healthy. January, because it’s the new year and often people choose this as a New Year’s resolution. April, because people want to get “beach ready,” and September, because it’s back to a routine time of year. The question is, how many people actually stick to these attempts at becoming healthier? Make it a priority, just like getting up every morning, washing your face, brushing your teeth, having coffee, getting dressed, etc…make exercise just as important, if not more. Working out is how I kickoff my day. Now if your schedule truly doesn’t allow for it, make time either at lunch or at the end of the work day. Some people actually like working out after work. There is always time to fit it in. The question is, do you really want to make the time? I’m here to say that you HAVE to. I sound like a broken record, but we take care of everything else in our lives, our bodies should be number one!
“I don’t find time to exercise, I make time to exercise.” “Only exercise and eat healthy on the days you want to be happy.”
When the weather turns iffy, getting to the gym can help you stay on track with your workouts, especially if you get involved in a variety of activities. To make the most out of your time at the gym, don’t just do the same machines each time you go, but take advantage of all the activities your gym offers. Take a class. There’s an energy you gather from other people when you workout in a group setting that you don’t get working out by yourself. Make the commitment with a friend and go faithfully together. Hire a personal trainer. Get your workouts on the right track from day one. If you feel intimidated or don’t like working out by yourself, make a deal with a friend to support each other by working out together. Whether it’s classes or just working out together, it’s much easier to do when being accountable to someone else. Knowing you have to show up will keep you motivated.

The Tomorrow Fund Needs Your Help Today By Mark Berger
As the Covid-19 crisis drags on, there are growing concerns about those who are struggling to survive. Unemployment rates continue to rise in many industries. The federal government is arguing over whether to send out a second round of stimulus checks, and if so, how much should people receive? There are too many questions and not enough answers. When you operate a nonprofit organization that relies on outside funds to support the mission, the uncertainty can be extremely challenging as well as the driving force for change. The Tomorrow Fund, located on Eddy Street in Providence, are doing just that, changing to meet the needs to continue helping others— particularly children and families who are dealing with cancer—but only with the continued support of the community. Executive Director Lisa Abbenante said like many other nonprofits, they have had to cancel their signature event, the 33rd Annual Fantasy Ball held in November, due to the pandemic. Unlike the event, the work and attention these families need goes on without a break.

“Cancer doesn’t pause, not even in the face of a worldwide pandemic,” Abbenante said. “The Tomorrow Fund is in need of your help during this truly unprecedented time. The world has drastically changed, our normal routines have come to a standstill … yet cancer continues to affect the lives of our loved ones daily.” The Tomorrow Fund is a self-funded nonprofit organization that aids in the health and wellbeing of children and families who are dealing with cancer. The Tomorrow Fund provides daily financial and emotional support to children with cancer and their families. Kids treated in the Pediatric Oncology Program and The Tomorrow Fund Clinic at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island receive our support. These vital programs are made available to our patients and families from the time of diagnosis, throughout treatment. Abbenante said families affected by this disease face financial hardship as well as emotional. Because cancer can be all consuming, bills can climb quickly. It isn’t just for food and utilities, either. “Children are still diagnosed with cancer every single day, which is why our Tomorrow Fund kids and families need your help now more than ever,” she said.
The Tommorow Fund Fantasy Ball
In an effort to continue to raise awareness as well as funding for their programs, The Tomorrow Fund will be hosting a Virtual Event “Count On Me” featuring messages from our Tomorrow Fund leadership, families, physicians and celebrities. In addition, they will host LIVE drawings for some fabulous prizes, along with spectacular entertainment. “All proceeds from this virtual event will ensure that our vital Tomorrow Fund programs continue,” she said.
COUNT ON ME!
“Did you know that the cost of hospital parking alone exceeds $10,000 over the course of a child’s illness and treatment? The Tomorrow Fund helps with necessities such as rent/mortgage, utilities, medical bills, hospital parking and much, much more. To date, more than 2,000 children and their families have received support from our organization.” Due to Covid-19, The Tomorrow Fund had to postpone the traditional, in-person Fantasy Ball and Auction until next year. However, they continue providing critical daily financial and emotional support to these courageous children with cancer and their families, for as long as there are funds to do so. Since most of their fundraisers have either been cancelled or severely impacted due to the pandemic, The Tomorrow Fund is experiencing an enormous financial loss. The need has never been greater for the families who rely on us for assistance and support while their child is being treated for cancer, she said.
Virtual Celebration and Live Sweepstakes Drawing Saturday, November 7, 2020 6:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. “Together we can make a better Tomorrow for children and their families. Our patients and families are counting on YOU, to help us, help them,” Abbenante said. “Cancer doesn’t go away in times of crisis, and neither do we!” The Tomorrow Fund is a local, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, providing daily financial and emotional support to children with cancer and their families. While our charity is specifically focused on children treated in the pediatric oncology program at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and The Tomorrow Fund Clinic, our organization receives no funding from Hasbro Children’s Hospital. They rely entirely on the generous support of donors and supporters to help ease the enormous burden parents face with pediatric cancer. For more information about The Tomorrow Fund, please call Lisa Abbenante at 401-448-8811 or email at lisa@ tomorrowfund.org.

Lang’s Bowlarama
Celebrating 60 years this October. Open for bowlers, young and old By Jennifer Coates The first time Chris Girard walked onto the shiny polished floors of Lang’s Bowlarama, at the ripe old age of three years, he knew there was no place on earth he would rather be. For Chris, this bowlarama was where his passion for bowling began, where years later he met and actually married his wife, and where he comes faithfully to this day. With the rare exception of the months when he became a new dad, Lang’s has been his “destination of choice” for over three decades! No pandemic is going to stop this avid bowler and nothing is going to keep him from this soon-to-be sixtyyear old iconic landmark in Cranston. If Ed Lang, the founder of this popular bowling alley on Niantic Avenue, was alive today, he would have loved Chris and his story. Ed had one overarching goal when he first opened his bowlarama in 1960; he wanted it to be a place where people could go to “have fun,” “to escape the worries of the world” and to “enjoy good old-fashioned, wholesome family fun.” Chris and others like him fulfill Ed’s dream every time they walk through the hallowed doors of this classic building. Lang’s Bowlarama provides all these things and so much more ~ just ask the third generation of Langs to own and operate the bowlarama,

Ed’s grandson’s Dave and Rich Lang. Dave and Rich, the sons of Bruce Lang (Ed’s son) have been the full-time owners of the bowlarama since June of 2012. They restored the venue to what it is today, a vibrant, joyful family-run business. The brothers have remained true to their grandfather and father’s visions, recreating nearly every inch of the bowlarama and restoring it to its original glory. No detail was spared in updating Lang’s, with special attention paid to their mid-century era, “Mad Men” theme, where periodpiece light fixtures, furniture, and even the menu, pay
homage to the trends of the 60’s. One of the “grooviest” things the Lang brothers did was to preserve the office where their grandfather once directed the activities of the alley. The office is a time capsule, complete with all the trappings of an office of a man of his day – right down to the clock on his vintage desk, the funky furniture, and other timeless mementos of the era. As soon as one walks in the office, time stands still and one is immediately transported to a time and a place which now seem dream-like and innocent when seen through the lens of our day. Ed and Bruce, father and son, would be proud of all the efforts that were made to save that sacred space! Today, Lang’s Bowlarama and entertainment center is as popular as it was in the “Golden Age” of bowling. The bowlarama has been reopened since July and is now rolling with activity, all while complying to the state’s strict COVID guidelines. In fact, the management and staff here have gone above and beyond what those guidelines have mandated. Here are just a few of the safety measures that have been put in place by the team at Langs. To begin, masks are required for entry and at all times except when playing at the lanes. Hand sanitizer is found on every table and every surface is sanitized and wiped down every night by a professional cleaning company (as well as by the vigilant staff here!) Bowlers are separated
by two lanes, even during leagues (though groups are allowed to remain together). As a voluntary precautionary measure, the alley dropped from 40 lanes down to 20. Temperatures are taken of all staff before their shifts and plexiglass screens keep both workers and guests safely apart. The safety of the bowlers and staff are the first priority of the Lang family. General Manager Carl DeRosa wants to assure all bowlers and their friends and family that Lang’s Bowlarama has done everything possible to keep them safe while enjoying all of the things they love most about the sport ~ the competition between friends and opponents. The sound of those balls rumbling down the lanes until they end in the CRACKING sound as “balls meets pins.” The laughter and the friendly bantering when one ball lands unceremoniously in the gutter. The smell of the burgers, hotdogs, tacos, wings, hot weiners, fries, onion “petals” and SO much more, wafting through the building. The clinking of glasses of beer or your favorite cocktail as victories are celebrated. Lang’s Bowlarama is a sensory experience that cannot be missed. Escape the gloom of the news. Come to this magical getaway ~ right here in the city of Cranston ~ and bowl your heart out. Lang’s Bowlarama is located off Route 10 at 225 Niantic Avenue. Ask An Expert What Makes a Home “Historic”?
My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www. LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@ LopcoContracting.com or call 401-2702664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column! Somehow over the years we have developed a reputation of being a type of “expert” in working on Historic Homes. I have no idea how this happened. The same way I suppose that if you search the term ‘Lead Paint’ on YouTube, a video of me pops up describing a bunch of lead paint-oriented items. These types of reputational development scenarios are quite perplexing to me. Since 1995 we have always had a knack for restoring these potentially intimidating structures which many steer clear from. Restoring older homes, or anything related to them, is definitely NOT for the faint of heart. As one example, speaking of “Hearts”, recently while scrolling through an awesome Facebook Group that showcases items from Rhode Island’s past, I came across an old photo of 88 Benefit Street in Providence, RI from 1952. Unbeknownst to me, Edgar Allen Poe’s love, Helen, lived here when he was seeing her (a fact which was shared amongst the group). We ironically had just refinished the exterior of this home this past Spring. A finished picture from our records of a similar angle, I think, is extremely interesting when viewing it next to the older one. In both pictures you can see the RI State House as well as the Cathedral of St. John (Episcopal Diocese of Providence) in the background. I believe this to be very neat stuff and an unsolicited, gentle reminder for me as to some of the awesome feelings associated with being fortunate enough to work day in and day out on historical homes such as this one. This all being said, many folks often wonder what makes a home considered “historic” in the first place? The answer is quite simple… There are generally thought to be 2 qualifying factors. One, is the home has to be at least 50 years old. Folks from other parts of the world where their history, literally, goes back centuries, obviously may laugh at this, but in this country, this is the starting point.
Secondly, it must meet one of 4 qualifying factors: • Be associated with an important, historical event • Be associated with the life of a noteworthy individual • Be thought of as the embodiment of a particular architectural, historical style • Has provided or is likely to provide significant historical information One of the reasons I have always enjoyed working on older homes is the pure idea of any of these factors in conjunction with something that is quite aged has consistently created this fantastic inner feeling inside of me, challenging to explain, but eerily magnetic nonetheless. For me, one factor does not necessarily supersede the others. For other folks though, they may have a passion for historical figures or historical types of architecture, etc. I am hugely honored whenever someone puts their faith in us to work on homes of a historical nature in whatever the capacity may be. Not only because there is often such a dramatic difference from ‘before’ we started working on the project in comparison to what it looks like when things are completed, but also because of the actual underlying historical significance of the home we are humbly working on to fix.

Folks of all ages searching for a new hobby will enjoy joining the Tropical Fish Society of Rhode Island, a group of individuals who come from all walks of life and are interested in colorful tropical fish. “We have about 45 members,” begins Dr. Richard (Rich) Pierce, club president. “Some are beginners, others are lifelong hobbyists but we all enjoy our fish.” According to Pierce, members meet on the third Weds. of the month at the Rhode Island SPCA office in East Providence. The program includes a short meeting, a presentation offered by a guest speaker, refreshments and fellowship. “It’s a good time to get together with fellow hobbyists with similar interests,” he shares, adding that the club also occasionally hosts auctions where members can purchase tropical fish and supplies. “We host an aquarium auction twice a year in Cumberland,” Pierce continues.
Sometimes the club also hosts opportunities for members to visit local salt marshes, streams and ponds to collect native fish suitable for placement in home aquariums. “Fish keeping is a very family-oriented hobby,” he shares. “Many kids, including myself, became interested in the aquarium hobby by collecting local fish and their passion developed and grew.” Pierce recalls that as typical children of the 1970s, his parents encouraged him to explore his local surroundings and to collect salamanders and insects. This interest lead him to create small aquariums, and to learn about many varieties of fish.
“Fish keeping is a growing hobby,” Pierce observes, adding that there are about 30 fish clubs whose members live from Maine to Maryland. “There are also a growing number of specialty fish clubs throughout the region,” he tells, citing the examples of New England Cichlid Association and American Killifish Association. For more information about the Tropical Fish Society of Rhode Island or to obtain a copy of the current newsletter, contact Richard Pierce: TFSRI.net.
The North Attleboro native eventually earned a degree of the University of New England in Maine, and after a stint working at an aquarium in Maine, he moved back to the area and earned a graduate degree in Marine Biology the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Pierce later earned a doctorate in Biological Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island and continues his work as a writer and scientist.
“Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings and all events are free of charge,” the aquatic specialist emphasizes, adding that many experienced hobbyists mentor new members and develop lasting friendships.
“I keep about 100 aquariums in my house,” the aquatic expert tells, adding that he enjoys visiting public aquariums and photography. When his schedule permits, he speaks on various topics related to tropical fish at meetings held throughout the United States and Canada and writes for publications and professional journals.
“Our fish auctions attract people from all over New England and beyond and allow people to buy and sell tropical fish, plants and aquarium supplies,” Pierce notes, adding that members do not sell reptiles, turtles or any other type of pet at the event.
“Before you purchase some fish, I suggest that people visit a small independent aquarium store and spend some time learning about tropical fish,” Pierce recommends. “See what fish catches your eye and learn all about that species before you make a purchase.

There are more than 100 different varieties so choose wisely.” According to the hobbyist, another aspect of fish keeping that many individuals also enjoy is breeding aquarium fish and trading or purchasing different varieties from fellow breeders.

Will the Election Impact Markets & Investments?
As we approach Election Day, investors are understandably wondering – and maybe even anxious – about how the U.S. presidential election will affect the stock market. Election years often come with increased market uncertainty. And this year, COVID-19 and a fragile economy have added new dimensions to what may be a landmark U.S. election cycle. Regardless of who ends up winning in November, the election will likely play a factor in the markets. Here are a few things investors should consider: Dealing with uncertainty This year’s election season has been marked by unusual circumstances. Republican incumbent President Trump is running for a second term – after a surprise victory in 2016. Whereas former Vice President Joe Biden began the campaign season competing against 25 candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination before emerging as the party’s nominee after a rocky start. There are many important issues at stake, including trade, healthcare, tax policies, social justice and our relationship with China. How well the economy is doing is also a significant influence on the election outcome, especially for an incumbent or incumbent party. But that calculus has suddenly become clouded by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. How long the virus will persist and how significant the impact on economic growth will be remains unclear at the moment. Even without these usual circumstances created by the pandemic, it isn’t uncommon for the stock market to exhibit a degree of volatility in the run-up to an election. This can be particularly true in the final weeks leading up to the election and if the race is close. Investors should be prepared for circumstances where the “noise” generated by the campaign contributes to market fluctuations. It’s not just about the president It’s true that our president has tremendous influence in the direction our country takes. However, it is important to keep in mind that regardless of who is successful in winning the White House, there is a significant difference between proposals and policy. How much any administration can accomplish is influenced quite heavily by the makeup of the House of Representatives, Senate, local and state legislatures, Federal regulators, as well as circumstances in the economy and the country at large. In addition to electing a president this fall, voters will also be electing 35 senators, now occupied by 23 Republicans and 12 Democrats. Currently, the Republican party has a three-seat majority in the Senate. And as happens every two years, the entire House, where the Democratic party currently controls a 35seat majority, is up for reelection. Is history a guide? While no two election years offer the same set of economic or political circumstances, it may be instructive to take a look back to see how markets have performed in the past as a means of providing some context for the present. Historically, market volatility begins to rise about 45 days ahead, or roughly three weeks into September, before peaking one week before the election. In instances where control of the White House changes parties, stock market volatility tends to increase
During an election year, U.S. stocks and bonds tend to perform better compared to the year after. Interestingly, there has been very little difference in the performance of the economy under Democratic and Republican presidents since 1977. According to recent analysis by Deutsche Bank, “The average growth rate for a Democrat President is 2.9% compared to 2.7% for a Republican President.”4 However, it is acknowledged that the economic performance during a president’s term isn’t necessarily a direct result of the actions of their administration, as president’s ultimately inherit an economy shaped by their predecessor’s actions, as well as other structural factors. What may be a more important consideration for investors than who is elected president are the longer-term drivers of economic growth and corporate profits, which are shaped by policy, but also other factors outside Washington. The impact on specific market sectors Although it’s speculative to try and predict the outcome of the election and all of the policy implications each party would impose, the result of the election is likely to influence key industries. Among the sectors of the market that could be affected in different ways are healthcare, energy and technology depending on the results of the election. What this means for your finances While it’s natural to think about the impact of the election on your investments, it’s only one factor. Stay attuned to the bigger picture of your long-term goals. Rhode Island Moving & Mobile Storage: Quality + Convenience + Reliability = Peace of Mind By Mark Berger
MI-BOX of Rhode Island is a locally owned and independently operated Mobile Storage and Moving solutions company exclusively servicing all of Rhode Island. From their Headquarters located at 125 Industrial Road in North Smithfield, RI, and an additional site in Warwick, RI, they proudly provide personalized service to their customers in a cost effective, reliable, and timely fashion. To us at Shop in RI, this means peace of mind in knowing you have experienced Rhode Island storage experts who know the state and who are focused on helping Rhode Islanders with their storage needs. We recently met with Managing Partner, Jason Jarvis, and General Manager, Danielle Lasko, to discuss their business. Jason 58 Shop In RI
represents a seven-member ownership team, which consists of hard-working and familyoriented Rhode Islanders who found a need to meet in Rhode Island: a service oriented approach to mobile storage. To Jason and Danielle, this means the right product available to their customers, when they want it, and where they want it quickly. Danielle brings a customer centric approach to working with customers to ensure their needs are met. MI-BOX of Rhode Island offers three sizes of secure, weatherproof, and durable containers: 8’ x 8’, 16’ x 8’, and 20’ x 8’. Danielle explained the 8-foot container can store the contents of a dorm room and is useful for seasonal item
storage; the 16-foot container can house the contents of 3 – 4 rooms of furniture or a medium sized apartment; and the 20-foot container can accommodate 4 – 5 rooms of furniture or a larger apartment. Jason noted the 20foot container is one which the competition does not offer. As part of their flexible approach to customers, Jason explained, “We can offer customers a daily rate plus delivery where our competitors charge customers a monthly rate plus delivery, regardless of how long they need the container,” he said. “We allow our customers to keep their container for as long as they need, whether that be for several days or several months, and we offer them access to their contents when they want access,

as well. It ’s all about what is most convenient for them.”
As a solutions company, Jason said the eight-foot container has been very helpful for students, and offers peace of mind for their parents, during these trying times, especially when students are away from home. With colleges and universities mandating students to unexpectedly vacate campuses due to COVID and for sanitizing dorms, the eight-foot container was useful to quickly and safely store student dorm room contents and valuables. Jason explained some families were working together and choosing the 16-foot or 20-foot containers to store belongings for multiple students together. Because they are able to have their containers available to customers within 24 – 48 hours, they are truly servicing the needs of Rhode Island. Additionally, as a socially conscious partnership, MI-BOX of Rhode Island offers discounts for Veterans and Frontline Workers.
Another convenient way they do business is through contactless delivery. Jason explained that customers and Danielle designate a point of contact and discuss delivery preferences and, once satisfied, the customer does not have to be present for the delivery or pick up of their container. To this point, Danielle explained an advantage MI-BOX of Rhode Island has over others is that their trucks can drop off their containers in relatively small spaces and with the access door facing the direction preferred by the customer. “Our MI-BOX patented LeveLift System allows us to safely transport and gently place our containers to best fit the customer ’s situation,” continued Danielle.

State Urges Residents to
TAKE IT OUTSIDE! By Mark Berger The last several months have been met with upheaval, uncertainty and unprecedented economic turmoil. Nobody can say they came out of this pandemic unscathed. This outbreak has affected everyone in some way. Depending on who one listens to, they have been told to stay indoors for fear of spreading Covid-19. That way of thinking has changed recently. As one example of this, the State of Rhode Island has launched a new initiative, “Take it Outside!” to encourage Rhode Islanders to host meetings, dine and partake in other activities outdoors. Lt. Gov. Daniel McKee, Chair of Rhode Island’s Small Business Advocacy Council, has put his own spin on the initiative with a “Take it Outside Small Business Tour.” The Lt. Governor and members of his staff are visiting each of the 39 cities and towns to hear firsthand about the issues impacting small businesses and their employees. McKee said the state’s program also encourages business owners such as restaurants and cafes to provide services outdoors. The state will also be distributing a total of $1 million to Chambers of Commerce and business associations to help local businesses take their operations outside. The purpose of this is to spark more business for those who have seen a significant downturn in their sales. The initial reaction to the Lt. Governor’s visits to small businesses have generally been positive, he said.
62 Shop In RI
“We have already visited several communities since we started this,” the lieutenant governor said. “We have gone to North Kingstown, Smithfield and Warren, among other places, and met with community, business and municipal leaders to find out what is happening there. We’ve visited several businesses at each stop and spoke with owners and townspeople who have concerns about what the future holds.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that, “indoor spaces are more risky than outdoor spaces where it might be harder to keep people apart and there is less ventilation.” Also, the World Health Organization believes that the coronavirus may linger in the air in crowded indoor spaces, spreading from one person to the next. A recent Japanese study of 100 cases found that the odds of catching the coronavirus is nearly 20 times higher indoors than outdoors.” With two major health-related organizations touting such results, it helped give the “green light” to spearhead this program. While at each visit, Lt. Gov. McKee and his staff hand out hundreds of facemasks to the businesses. That was made possible through a donation of 40,000 masks that the Lt. Governor coordinated through a contact he made during his time at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. The masks are one item that business owners need but may not have the money or resources to procure. He believes that lessening the burden of costs on small companies can
help them stay viable. Because of recent events, not everyone has a happy anecdote to tell the lieutenant governor. McKee was told by one owner that they don’t think their store will remain open through the end on this year because of the restrictions imposed by the state and lost revenue. Another owner said they are dealing with staffing issues and schoolage students doing virtual learning. That means parents are left to stay home if their kids are younger and may have to either work from home or possibly quit their job. Another problem people noted was the state’s “Restore RI” Grant Program. While there is still millions of dollars available to small businesses, it can be tough navigating through the application process. The lieutenant governor said that puts owners in a bind of applying for funds while running their own business. McKee has been one of the lead voices on expanding eligibility and simplifying the application process to benefit small businesses, something the state has agreed to do in late September. “I spoke with one store owner who said she was with her accountant for 45 minutes trying to fill out the grant application,” said McKee. “Business owners are trying to keep their heads above water. They don’t have that kind of time to devote to signing up for assistance. If there is a way the state can streamline the process, then we can get the money to people who need it the most.” That also means dealing with unemployment. Because many people took the extra $600 per week federal unemployment benefits over the summer, there was little incentive for employees to return to work. Now that the weekly stipend has been reduced, employees may still have qualms about their jobs. McKee said there is a state “WorkShare” program, where employees could work a certain amount of hours and receive

That helps employers continue operating and employees can ease back into their jobs while getting financial help in the process. McKee said that the problem has been informing people these programs exist. “One of the other things I am hearing from people on this tour is they didn’t know about these services,” he said. “We need to do a better job of letting people know that we are here to support them. There are thousands of small businesses here in the state. We need them to remain open so they in turn can fuel the state’s economy. The ‘Take it Outside’ Tour is a good way to tell people that we are here to help.” McKee said if any of the other communities are interested in having him stop in their town to tour the local stores and speak with leaders, owners and residents can contact his office to schedule a date.
