Though it may sound Japanese, the word "saganaki" refers to a small frying pan used in Greek cooking. The most famous of these dishes, also called saganaki, is a fried cheese, often flamed at the end with a little Ouzo, the Greek anise-flavored liqueur. Quick-Thinking Pilot Diverts Overseas Flight to Save Dog

An Air Canada pilot inconvenienced passengers on an overseas flight and may have cost the airline up to $10,000 in fuel costs, but people are praising him for a humane decision that also may have saved a dog’s life. When the pilot noticed a cargo heatingsystem malfunction during a flight from Tel Aviv to Toronto, just as the plane was due to cross the Atlantic, he suddenly remembered Simba, CityNews reports. The 7-year-old French bulldog was taking his first flight holed up in cargo, and the pilot recognized the dangerous situation the canine could be in. “If you look at the outside temperature, if it’s minus 50 or 60, there is some insulation, but it will probably still get down to below freezing [in the cargo area],” aviation expert Phyl Durby tells CityNews.

The pilot’s decision: touch down ASAP in Frankfurt, Germany, per CNN. There, Simba was put on another flight, and the original flight fell 75 minutes behind schedule, the broadcaster notes. Still, despite the expense and time lost, Durby says the pilot did his duty. “The captain is responsible for all lives on board, whether it’s human or K-9,” he tells CityNews. An Air Canada spokesman emailed CNN that “while we recognize this was an inconvenience for our customers, the overall reaction was positive, particularly once people understood the dog was in potential danger but safe as a result of the diversion.” And Simba’s owner, German Kontorovich, had an especially positive response, telling CityNews once he and Simba were reunited in Toronto that “it’s my dog, it’s like my child. It’s everything to me.”

It’s Been a Vacationless Year for Most Americans

The majority of Americans haven’t taken a vacation in the last year, and many of those who have felt guilty about relaxing while away from work, according to two recent surveys. The Los Angeles Times reports 56% of Americans or

135 million people haven’t gone on a vacation in 12 months. Those numbers are extrapolated from an insurance company’s phone survey of 1,000 people and show an increase from 52% last year. Apparently, employees are afraid of being replaced by someone with a better work ethic or dread the work that would pile up while they’re away. One expert weighed in from her own vacation, telling the Chicago Tribune that America has a culture that makes it difficult to take time away from work for fear of being branded “lazy.”

Perhaps even more distressing, of those Americans who do get away from work, Yahoo reports 42% feel guilty for relaxing on vacation and 54% use their vacation time to go to the doctor, handle family issues, or deal with other obligations. Those numbers come from a yearly survey by Princess Cruises. Studies show Americans simply don’t take vacations even when employers let them: According to Yahoo, US workers left $52.4 billion of vacation time on the table in 2013. Another expert told the Tribune the bad economy is only exacerbating vacation guilt. But Americans remain hopeful; 51% of people surveyed by the insurance company still hoped to squeeze a vacation in before January.

Oops: American Air Took Wrong Plane to Hawaii Good news, twitchy fliers: Your fears of flying aren’t completely irrational. The latest tale of concern comes via American Airlines, which apparently managed to fly the wrong plane to Hawaii last month in a decided FAA no-no. The incident, first reported by aviation blogger Brian Sumers after he spotted pilots chatting anonymously online, happened when American started flying Airbus A321s from Los Angeles to Hawaii.

American has two versions of the A321, notes Sumers: Those approved for long flights over water an FAA certification called ETOPS and those that are not.

American accidentally grabbed an A321 that wasn’t certified for the flight a

mistake that wasn’t noticed until halfway through the flight.

“Immediately when we realize what happened, we notified the FAA and we are working and fully cooperating with them,” says an American rep; the airline decided to continue the flight and then flew the plane back to LA empty. “We also have an ongoing, thorough review of our policies and procedures.” That apparently includes a software upgrade to ensure “ the correct aircraft is identified to fly the correct route.” But as for how likely you are to land on a non-certified plane in an ocean setting, “it’s really rare,” Sumers tells the Post. “Something like this, when you talk to airline people, they say ‘How does this happen? This can’t happen?’” The FAA is also curious as to how this happened, notes Sumers, and is investigating.

Whitney Houston will be on tour in 2016 thanks to the magic of holograms. The late singer will appear on stage and belt out her greatest hits, being joined by as-yet announced special guests, reports Rolling Stone. No word on specifics, but the show is expected to premiere in the US before heading around the world. Houston’s estate is on board and working with Hologram USA on the venture. “It’s a great opportunity for her fans to see a reinvention of one the most celebrated female artists in history,” says her sister-in-law, Pat Houston. The company also plans a Billie Holiday hologram show at the Apollo around Thanksgiving.

Stevie Wonder: Lawyer Took Advantage Of My Blindness Stevie Wonder says he trusted the wrong man when he signed a contract he couldn’t see. The singer is suing the estate of longtime lawyer Johanan Vigoda, saying that when he was 21, Vigoda had him sign a contract that gave the lawyer 6% of his royalties. He says Vigoda took advantage of his blindness by including a clause that says the royalties would go on “forever,” which he only found out about after Vigoda died in 2011 and royalties kept going to his family. He says he was taken advantage of and wants a judge to cancel the clause. He stopped the payments in 2013 when he found out about the clause, and Vigoda’s widow has filed her own lawsuit seeking $7 million she says she’s owed.

‘Netflix for Books’ Calls It Quits

A service billed as a Netflix for books is calling it quits after failing to attract enough voracious readers willing to pay $9.95 a month for access to 1 million books. Oyster, which launched in 2013, announced in a blog post that it’s going to “sunset” the service over the next few months.

The company says it believes “more than ever that the phone will be the primary reading device globally over the next decade,” but it feels “this is best seized by taking on new opportunities to fully realize our vision for e-books.” Those new opportunities will apparently be at Google, which has hired Oyster’s CEO, co-founders, and other team members for Google Play Books. ources say Google has paid off Oyster investors.

Where did it go wrong for Oyster? Consumers stayed away “because binge-reading is more difficult than binge-watching movies,” and it didn’t help that the service couldn’t be accessed on Amazon’s Kindle.

The company ended up in direct competition with Amazon after it added e-book sales to its subscription service, he notes.

People seeking an all-you-can-read service still have the option of Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited service (which was introduced the year after Oyster made its debut) or ofcourse, libraries.

wORLD NEWS Woman Thought to be ‘Murdered’ in 1984 Found Very Much Alive

A German woman assumed to have been murdered more than 30 years ago was found alive by police. But far from solving the mystery of her disappearance, her unexpected return is only deepening it. Then 24-year-old Petra Pazsitka left her dentist to take a bus to her family’s house in 1984 and was never seen again. Police searched for her to no avail, and it was assumed she had been murdered. In fact, a man suspected of killing a 14-year-old girl in the same area where Pazsitka was last seen confessed to her murder in 1987. But her body was never found.

Two weeks ago, a woman calling herself “Mrs. Schneider” called Dusseldorf police to report a burglary to her home. When officers asked for identification, she reportedly confessed to being the now-55-year-old Pazsitka.

Police say she’s been living in various cities around Germany under a fake name and without any official documents. With no bank account, she’s allegedly been making money through “illicit work” and paying all bills in cash. “Her brother and mother were in shock and tears when they heard the news,” a police spokesperson says. But Pazsitka won’t say what prompted her disappearance three decades ago, only telling police she wants nothing to do with her family though she denies that any problems with them were behind her vanishing act or the public.

2.3 Million People Reply to Job Posting in India.

You read that headline correct, 2.3 million people.This story throws India’s high unemployment levels into harsh relief: When the government of Uttar Pradesh announced 368 job openings for positions that pay about $240 per month, 2.3 million people applied. And, while the government jobs are menial and require only a fifth-grade education, at least 255 candidates have doctorates and more than 200,000 have graduate degrees.

“This is astoundingly high number of applicants,” a senior government officer says, adding that it “shows desperation of the youth who despite being highly educated is ready to do a job where he has to run errands and wash tea cups and saucers.”

Since interviewing all the applicants would take four years, a written exam will be used to narrow the field.

British Pub Fined After Liquid Nitrogen Shot Destroys Woman’s Stomach

A UK wine bar is in the hole for a $155,000 fine after a teen ingested a liquid nitrogen shot given to her on the house, became instantly ill, and had to have her stomach removed, the Guardian reports.

Gaby Scanlon, now 20, was with friends at Oscar’s Wine Bar and Bistro in Lancaster in October 2012 to celebrate her 18th birthday when one of the staff handed her a free “Nitro-Jagermeister” shot. “I turned to the man and asked if it was OK to drink,” Scanlon told a Preston Crown Court yesterday. “He said ‘yes.’ Smoke was coming from my nose and mouth. Straight away I knew something was not right.” It wasn’t: Internal tissue was destroyed and her stomach lining perforated, and she had to undergo emergency surgery to remove her stomach and have her small bowel attached to her esophagus.

The bar’s director was said to have been “intrigued by the dramatic effect” of a similar drink at a London hotel, so he decided to bring it to Oscar’s. But a local health inspector had been concerned about the offering when he checked out the bar in May 2012 and had sent the bar a letter with notes on the safe way for liquid nitrogen drinks, which aren’t legal to be consumed; he says he never heard back from the bar. Scientists say the drink has to completely settle down and the liquid must evaporate before it’s consumed, the broadcaster notes. The lawyer for the family that owns the bar says they’re “mortified” and that “at no time did they see anything warning them of the risks of ingestion,” though they blamed the incident on their own “ignorance.” Scanlon, meanwhile, now experiences “episodes of agonizing pain” and has a limited diet.

‘Exceptional’ Pompeii Find Predates City’s Destruction

The ancient city of Pompeii holds many treasures, but the most recent find hails to a time long before the city was destroyed. French archaeologists unexpectedly discovered an undisturbed pre-Roman tomb that dates to fourth century BC. The remains of an adult woman were inside, along with clay jars called amphoras, the Local reports. The tomb’s contents survived the Romans, Mount Vesuvius (which wiped out Pompeii in 79 AD), and WWII shelling. “It’s a miracle that this has survived,” says Osanna. And there’s the chance something else survived near it. The area around the newly discovered tomb will also be explored because “tombs are not normally found alone,” says Osanna.

AFP notes that thousands of archaeologists and related experts are contributing to Pompeii’s excavation and restoration. (An “underwater Pompeii” was recently discovered off of Greece.)

Whales Return to Long Island Sound After 2 Decades

It’s been more than 20 years since whales were spotted in the Long Island Sound and even longer since the last humpback was spied but that streak was broken this summer in what one maritime expert is calling “the year of the whale,” the Hour reports. Boaters off Long Island and Connecticut have been capturing images of belugas, humpbacks, and at least one minke starting in May, when three belugas were seen near Fairfield, Conn.

But while the creatures provide perfect photo ops (especially breaching humpbacks), NOAA warns people to keep their distance, the AP notes. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, only one boat can come within 300 feet of a whale, and even then only for 15 minutes, NBC Connecticut reports; it also must reduce speed and tell other boats about the sighting. (An “Ocean Etiquette” guide by NOAA Fisheries offers more tips.)

The biggest question, though, has yet to be definitively answered: Why did the whales return to the Sound after such a long break? Experts believe baitfish-harvesting restrictions and less rainfall (which reduces polluted runoff from entering the waters) may have drawn the whales back, per the AP. The whale expert cited in the Hour adds that a whale who’s hurt or sick may also sometimes enter strange waters. Whatever the reasons, local boaters are thrilled. “I was having heart palpitations I was so excited,” one tells the AP, while another says he was double-teamed off Stamford, Conn.: “I know for certain that there was more than one whale because the breaching one started to scare me and breached behind the boat while the other whale was in front. I got really scared that it could hit or crush my 27-foot boat. It was about the size of the boat.”

Feds Play Hardball With Whitey Bulger’s Girlfriend Federal prosecutors have made it clear to the girlfriend of crime boss Whitey Bulger that she has a choice: Start talking, or rot in prison.

Catherine Greig, the mobster’s companion during his 16 years on the run, is already serving eight years for assisting him and she has now been indicted for criminal contempt, which could keep the 64-year-old behind bars indefinitely, the Boston Globe reports. A judge has ordered her to provide information about others who may have helped Bulger between 1996 and his arrest in 2011, a period Bulger describes as a “16-year honeymoon.

Nearly Half Our Edible Seafood Is Going Uneaten

US consumers throw out or otherwise waste 1.3 billion pounds of edible seafood every year—that’s more than a quarter of the country’s annual supply, according to a press release from John Hopkins Center for a Livable Future.

Those numbers come from a new study published in Global Environmental Change that found up to 47% of the US edible seafood supply goes uneaten every year. Some of that is the fault of fishermen catching the wrong species or product lost during distribution and retail. But the majority of the waste—51% to 63%—is squarely the fault of consumers. The 2.3 billion pounds of edible seafood that goes uneaten is enough protein to sustain more than 10 million people for a year.

The findings are especially important now, with experts encouraging US residents to eat more seafood in lieu of chicken, beef, or other meats, according to the researchers. Unfortunately, a number of factors—including overfishing and climate change—are destroying the world’s seafood supply. “If we’re told to eat significantly more seafood but the supply is severely threatened, it is critical and urgent to reduce waste of seafood,” the study leader says in the press release. Researchers suggest packaging seafood in smaller portions or encouraging consumers to buy frozen seafood. Time reports the new study fits with the federal government’s plan—announced last week—to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030. “Let’s feed people, not landfills,” the EPA said at the time.

New Roller Coaster to Break 10 World Records It’ll be the longest dive coaster, as well as the tallest (223 feet) and fastest (at 75mph).

A park press release lists the seven other records the Swiss-built ride which features a floorless car that seats 24 in three rows of eight will break upon opening: Thrill seekers should pencil this one onto their 2016 calendar: The Valravn Birdseye is slated to open in May at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, and those who survive the 3,415-foot roller coaster will be able to brag that they’ve experienced a ride that quashed 10 world records. Discovery News explains that the Valravn Birdseye will become America’s third “dive coaster” (the others are at Busch Gardens in Tampa and Williamsburg, Va.), meaning “the kind that gives riders that terrifying feeling of free-falling with at least one 90-degree drop”—a vertical drop that riders perilously perch above, frozen for several seconds.

Crispy Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Apples By Chef Adam Baffoni As the weather cools down, we’ll start to see the first of the fall fruits and vegetables pop up at farmers markets around the state, and for anyone who eats locally, that’s a great thing. Fall is an amazing season for produce in Rhode Island, providing us with apples, pears, quince, winter squashes, hearty greens and a whole lot of root vegetables. This recipe was made to accentuate the fresh ingredients you’ll find at your local farms this time of year, and is almost unbelievably simple to make. Take a trip to any well respected farm to table restaurant this fall and you’re almost guaranteed to see crispy brussels sprouts on the menu. This method of preparing the humble sprout is easy and quick, yet so delicious that its captured the attention of countless chefs across the country. Add to it the classic sweet-and-salty combination of bacon and apples, and you’ve got a dish that’s well balanced and intensely delicious.

Ingredients

1lb brussels sprouts, halved and blanched 1 sweet apple, such as a fuji or mcoun. Peeled and diced ½ lb thick sliced bacon, cut into small chunks 2Tbsp white wine Salt and pepper, as needed

Directions

Cook the bacon in a saute pan over medium heat until the fat has completely rendered out and the bacon is crispy.

Remove the bacon from the pan and discard most of the fat, leaving just enough to coat the bottom of the pan completely.

Turn the heat to high and once it is very hot, add the brussels sprouts, making sure they are all cut side down.

Allow to cook for 4-5 minutes, until the brussels are a deep golden brown and smell toasty. Add the bacon back to the pan along with the apples.

While the pan is still very hot, add the wine and season with salt and pepper.

Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to allow the wine to cook off, and serve immediately.

Preserving Newport’s tradition of opulent detail

by alli e her zo g • p ho to s by so oz ie sundlun The Ball & Claw showcases the 18th-century period pieces made by furniture craftsman Jeffrey Greene. Ironically, or perhaps serendipitously, the shop is located just a few blocks from Bridge Street, where Newport’s legendary cabinet makers made some of the original pieces Greene now replicates. He has been in business for 30 years now, building expertly crafted replicas of 18th century furniture entirely by hand to ensure authenticity.

Greene, who studied mechanical engineering, didn’t intend to do this for a living, but took an interest in it when he returned to his home state.

“I studied the originals in great detail,” Greene said of his method for learning the trade. “There’s a lot to learn from the original pieces.”

Rhode Island – and Newport in particular – is home to many pieces created in the 1700s by the renowned Goddard and Townsend families, including desks, chests, lowboys and corner chairs. Doris Duke’s private collection now resides at the Samuel Whitehorne House and there are also pieces at the Hunter House and the Museum of Newport History, as well as the John Brown House in Providence.

Greene is often commissioned to replicate these rare and extremely pricey antiques, and as a result, he has plenty of interesting stories from his years studying the iconic pieces. For example, he recently discovered a Goddard signature inside a drawer of a Newport desk that had been previously unnoticed. A similar situation occurred when he was able to decipher and trace the origin of a chalk signature on a family heirloom tall-case clock back to Stephen Goddard, a celebrated Newport artisan.

While researching the Newport lowboy, which Greene replicated to be auctioned off at the upcoming Redwood Summer Gala, he uncovered yet another mystery when he linked the piece to Joe Townsend through a series of details and a bill of a sale.

Opulent details, such as the ball and claw feet (hence the shop name) were very popular with original American furniture-makers.

“Newport furniture makers took it to the extreme, though,” said Greene.

The distinct and defined open talon claw featured on one of the replicas in his showroom is a true rarity and only a handful like it are still in existence.

Greene’s wife, Christine, also works at the shop and helps curate the décor, accessories and other period items that are sold there.

Because of Greene’s expertise, he was recently asked to be a part of the International Yacht Restoration School’s (IYRS) new furniture making program. The six-month program will launch in January 2016 and will teach students the craft by exposing them to the pieces on display locally. It will allow them to create their own drawings and plans based on the details and measurements they’ll gather firsthand.

Today, Atwells Avenue, while more diverse in culture, continues to radiate its Italian inheritance with smells of traditional Italian cooking that will bring hungry visitors walking in from miles away.

Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails

Though it may sound Japanese, the word "saganaki" refers to a small frying pan used in Greek cooking. The most famous of these dishes, also called saganaki, is a fried cheese, often flamed at the end with a little Ouzo, the Greek anise-flavored liqueur. Combine that idea with fresh shrimp and tomato, and you’ve got this Greekinspired dish.

Ingredients 300 g grated Graviera cheese 1 can (28 oz.) whole tomatoes 1 lb. (about 24) shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 medium onion, chopped juice of 1/2 lemon 1/4 cup olive oil 2 cloves garlic, through a press pinch red pepper flakes 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh oregano, finely chopped 1 1/2 tablespoons Ouzo salt and pepper

Preparation Peel and de-vein the shrimp. Squeeze the juice of 1/2 of a lemon on to the shrimp and toss. Set aside.

In a large pan, saute the onions in the olive oil until translucent. Add the garlic and cook for a few seconds more. Crush or puree the tomatoes and add to the pan. Add the red pepper flakes, dill and oregano, and salt and pepper. Add the Ouzo away from open flame. Let this sauce cook down for a bit until all the flavors have blended together.

Pour a layer of the sauce on the bottom of a metal broiler-proof pan. Lay the shrimp in a single layer into the sauce. Cover the shrimp with the rest of the sauce and sprinkle the grated Graviera cheese on top.

Place the pan in the broiler and cook until the cheese is brown and bubbly. brownies rise while baking, so use a deeper pan and make sure you don't fill it more than two-thirds of the way up.

Cook at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Test with a toothpick to make sure the brownies are cooked all the way through. Then enjoy - they are great with ice cream!

Ingredients Base 1 box of yellow cake mix ½ cup of butter, melted 1 large egg Filling 8 oz of cream cheese room temperature 1 can of pumpkin 1 tsp vanilla 3 large eggs 1tsp of cinnamon ½ cup of butter, melted Topping 2/3 cups of all-purpose flour 1 cup of brown sugar ½ tsp of cinnamon 1 ½ tablespoons of maple syrup ¼ cup of unsalted butter, melted Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

For the base, spray or grease and flour a 9x 13 pan, and set aside. Then in a bowl combine dry cake mix, melted butter and egg. The mixture will be stiff. Press the mixture into prepared pan and set aside.

For the filling, in a large bowl beat cream cheese and pumpkin until smooth. Mix in vanilla, eggs, cinnamon and butter. Pour the mixture into the pan on top of the cake base.

For the topping, combine the flour, brown sugar cinnamon, maple syrup and melted butter. Stir until moist. Crumble topping evenly over the pumpkin filling in prepared pan.

Bake for 40-45 minutes. Let cool and then place in the refrigerator for 3-4 hours before serving.

Narraganset Brewing Company Face it, you’re a Rhode Islander. You drink coffee milk. You have salt at the ready in shed out back. You own a vanity plate that you swear is funny. There is even some brewing of private stock being done at Buzzard’s Bay Brewing in Westport, MA. But, is there any left for us? Will any barrels even reach out state borders before being tapped dry?

Of course they will. In the middle of Providence lives the current Narragansett Brewing Company, serving beer on tap or selling beer in cans to any Rhode Islander (or person over 21) that enjoys quality brews. The Company is located in The Jewelry District of Providence right off of Dyer St. While it may not have the brewing tanks and hops, it certainly has all the beers you could ask for.

The Company is open seven days a week, from early evening to midnight, and offers classic brews as well as seasonal shifts in the tap. The infamous Narragansett Lager and Narraganset Light, winners of a first place award at the Great International Beer Festival in 2010, are, of course, permanent residents on the tap. Standing beside them is Narragansett Cream Ale, a year-round craft style which serves as a perfect example of a PreProhibition cream ale — only slightly hoppier.

Currently, Fest is amongst their season brews. At 5.5% alcohol by volume & 22 IBUs, this traditional German Oktoberfest style beer is brewed with the highest quality German malt and hops. This slightly kicked up brew is sure to make the falling temperatures a bit more manageable and is available on tap or in 16oz cans.

Step Into The Vortex: Sci-fi, Fantasy and Horror Film Festival

by Patrick Burke The selected offerings from auteurs across the globe hope to offer options for everybody.

Vortex has brought together an even larger assemblage of fans and filmmakers through further broadening its program to include fantasy and science fiction. Monday and Tuesday at 4:00, G and PG-rated animation and fantasy shorts for kids will be shown at the Providence Public Library. Other film packages Quirk highlighted were the four shows at the new venue, Narragansett Pier Theater, both Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 and 9:15. Director Carleton Ranney’s feature “Jackrabbit,” which debuted at Tribeca Film Festival, will kick off Friday night by the pier.

“The good films are just really unique and exciting, a lot of times they subvert your expectations in very creative ways,” Quirk said.

“Genre films are fantastic in this way, there is a universal language of cinematic tropes that everyone knows, so there are many ripe opportunities for new filmmakers to open a dialogue with the audience and play with what they think is going to happen.”

Redubbed as Vortex: Sci-fi, Fantasy and Horror Film Festival, Flickers’ annual fall celebration of horror flicks returns October 19-25 for its 16th year with a broader cinematic spectrum and a few added venues.

“The Horror Festival had included these genres, but this year we decided to rebrand the entire festival to equate a wider selection of programming,” Programming Director Shawn Quirk said. “We were getting all these great films that we wanted to highlight. The structure of the festival is staying the same; we’ll still have our panel series, we’re doing our date night again – that’s going to be on Friday at the Narragansett Theater at 7:00.”

The diabolically brilliant Quirk returns for his fifth year as curator, and the 2015 lineup promises a similar quality as in years past, along with some added range to the collection of films. Between Vortex and Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival, Flickers received 5,700 entries from 15 countries, around 800 of which qualified for the genre realm. Him and his programming team boiled these down to 75.

“We have a strong team of judges, a combination of filmmakers that have either been in the festival or are just in the industry at large.

We also have film professors, as well as a diverse group of avid cinephiles,” Quirk said. “Once you get through those they come to our programming team, and our programming team sorts through everything. Then I make the final decisions regarding the selections.”

Some of the short films and features Quirk highlighted include: “Movies in Space,” a scifi comedy about alien/human film production, and the French film “Tarim le Brave” where the protagonist fights some unlikely enemies in his quest for the princess, or “Intersection,” about a meteor that interrupts the monotonous day of two road workers, among many others.

Most of the screenings are in Providence: the Bell Street Chapel Theatre, Paff Theatre at URI’s downtown campus and the Providence Public Library. But there are filmmaker panels and films at Roger Williams University’s Global Heritage Hall as well as film screenings at the Jamestown Arts Center.

Fans of weird fiction pioneer H.P. Lovecraft will be excited for two days worth of Lovecraftian local history and film screenings. In Lovecraft’s mythos, mysterious ancestors, esoteric cults and powerful demons consort with the East Side’s residents, and the Rhode Island Historical Society leads this walking tour past real life historic locations that played an important role in the writer’s life and inspired his fiction. The tours take place on Saturday October 24 and Sunday 25, last about 90 minutes and depart from the John Brown House at 52 Power Street at noon.

People who take the tour on Saturday get a free ticket to any of the shows Saturday night at Bell Street Chapel Theatre. Sunday tour-takers will get to see the screening of Lovecraft-inspired short films at the Providence Public Library.

Miss R. I. Outstanding Teen Catarina Girardi (America) Overcoming Anti – Social Media, Cyberbulling and Being Productive Volunteering At McAuley’s House

By Gale Carroccia McAuley House and Village in Providence. Bay View is a mercy school founded from the principle of Catherine McAuley, which accepts any person in need of a meal.

“The volunteers serve meals at dinner time and say a pray before every meal,” said Catarina, she added the village is a shelter for unfortunate women who make the transition back in to The work force. We also take the children on field trips, pumpkin picking and other special event.

Catarina not only puts smiles on less fortunate children by spending time with them, but she could also teach them a dance lesson or two, as she has been dancing since the tender age of three at Atwood Performing center in Cranston, along with her sister Dominique and younger brother.

It was only natural she chose dance as her pageant talent, but before she could dance to one of her favorite poems she had to get the green light to move forward.

“I contacted Gary Turk through social media in order to receive permission to dance to his poem ‘Coincidence’ at the pageant talent competition,’ said Catarina, she went on to say she e mailed him but got no response and then she went on Facebook and got a reply within five minutes to go Forward.

Catarina is no stranger to dance competitions as she competed in a number of contests. One of her favorite competitions was held in May 2013, at the Rhode on the Pawtuxet in Cranston. It was called ‘Can You Dance New England’ it was (Pink Heels) to benefit breast cancer research awareness. Catarina took first place in the contest.

Catarina Girardi embraced the challenge of being the only contestant in the Miss R.I. Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant that did not previously compete in the contest, out of three other girls competing. Catarina said she pushed harder, keeping her eye on the prize and as a result was crowned the 2015 Miss R.I. Outstanding Teen this past May 30, at R.I. College in Providence.

Catarina is a junior at St. Mary’s Academy Bay View in Riverside, R.I. She recently celebrated her 17th birthday and understands how social media and cyberbulling effects the teen Population as she chose overcoming ant- social media and cyberbulling as her pageant platform. “ Teens initially want to fight back when cyberbullied, but there are consequences to that’, Said Catarina, adding if cyberbullied, peacefully confront them and communicate with them, by ignoring It will not solve the problem.

Catarina explained she will be meeting with Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and plans to post something positive everyday on twitter, Instagram and facebook to encourage people to be active in the Community by volunteering.

Not only does Catarina encourage people to volunteer in the community, she actually Puts her words into action. Since her freshman year at Bay View, Catarina has been volunteering at the 38 ShopInRI.com

When asked what her ideal dream job would be Catarina said to dance on Broadway in New York City for about four years, then return to school to become a physical therapist.

On August 1, Catarina competed in the 2015 Miss America National Outstanding Teen pageant in Orlando, Florida, along with her parents support. But before the completion there was Preparation time. There is a lot of preparation for the national completion said Catarina, one of them is the selection of the gown and shoes.

In addition to selecting the perfect gown, Catarina explained how she prepared for the interview questions by doing practice runs for the mock interviews with the MRI panel. She also had her sister Dominique and her friends test her knowledge on a wide variety of subjects with flash cards.

“Jim Metcalf of the MRI support staff helped me with my presentation, making eye contact and the importance of the first impression, and I would like to thank him for all his time and knowledge’ Said Catarina.

Catarina would also like to thank everyone at the MRI organization for all her exciting experiences, memories and for the life long friendships she has made.

House of Treasures With historical artifacts from despots and the devotional items of Popes to the collectibles of Westerly, Rhode Island native Don Balla offers a vivid commentary on those who sought to destroy the world and others who devoted their lives to improving it.

With over 50 years of experience as a collector of classical antiques and Americana memorabilia, Balla is aptly described by friends and business colleagues as “a walking encyclopedia of knowledge about collectibles.”

“When I was a boy, I collected Indian head pennies. I guess you could say that’s when my career in this business started,” the collector, who began at age 14, said.

Operating out of his home, Balla’s space is well stocked with Thomas Edison phonographs, statues made of fine Italian marble, European stamps, 19th century post cards, Vatican coins, papal medallions, oriental rugs, turn-of-the-century paper money and antique coins from France, Italy, Germany and Greece.

“The one thing I don’t keep in the house is my collection of silver dollars; those I save in a bank vault,” he noted. Along with his collection of over 1,000 collectable records, all in good to perfect condition, he maintains an extensive collection of the aforementioned Edison phonographs and related items, all of which are in working order.

“I guess you could say I’m partial to my ‘talking machines,’ as they were once called,” Balla said. “I sell and trade them along with other items, but they are my favorites. One thing I do have that I’m unlikely to ever

part with is a 1910 cylinder recording disc with Edison’s voice on it.”

Like most collectors, Balla’s greatest satisfaction is his never-ending hunt for elusive hidden treasures.

It is a quest that has often paid off.

“Not too long ago, I went to a yard sale and bought a yellow-colored medal that I thought looked interesting; I paid less than $10 for it.

After doing some research, I learned that it was a royal seal that had once belonged to King Carlos III of Spain. Made of gold, its current appraisal value is now over $400,” he said. “Hey, you just never know.”

Items in Balla’s collection are in exceptional condition but often resonate with the darkest side of history. By way of example, he recalled, “several years ago, a Jewish museum in New York City purchased a rare Third Reich postage stamp from me to include in their Shoah display. History can be a terrible teacher at times,” he noted. “And the Holocaust was a horrific lesson we simply cannot afford to ever forget.”

A familiar figure at flea markets and garage sales, Balla also attends the biannual collectible show in Providence held in May and December. It is one of his favorite shows in the state.

Balla’s penchant for nostalgia and glamour also gives him access to celebrities few people have.

“Back in the '70s, I ran an antique shop in New York City on the Upper West Side. One day, a very gracious lady came in and asked if I had photographs of Humphrey Bogart. Fortunately, I had a black-and-white photo of him from his 1941 film, 'High Sierra.' She paid $50 for it and thanked me profusely. The woman was Lauren Bacall – I guess that’s what you can say is a sidebar perk of this job,” he said with a smile.

by Amanda Hemond I’m not a fan of what follows it, but I do love the fall. The activities, the crisp weather, my TV shows coming back, and of course, the fashion! Who doesn’t love new boots and sweaters?

Even though I’ve been out of school for quite some time, I always get the ‘back to school shopping’ feeling of starting fresh with my clothes at the end of the summer. Now, I’m not talking a whole new wardrobe, but incorporating a few of-the-moment, yet classic, pieces to your wardrobe can make it feel fresh for the cooler months. This year, I’m so excited for some of the trends that are all around. I’ve rounded up some of my favorite, ontrend fall staples that I plan on wearing until next May! Booties. Booties have been around for a while now, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. So, treat yourself to a good pair! I know I wear mine daily. I finally got another pair this year, and they’re already getting so much use. The great thing about booties is they go with everything! Jeans, dresses, shirts – really, wear them with anything and everything! I prefer a lower heel since they’re my everyday shoes, but you can be fancier with a heel or even a wedge for a little more comfort.

Cardi-coats. A cardi-coat is a cardigan that looks like/can be work like a coat. Now, they’re not the warmest because it’s still just a sweater, but I love the idea of layering underneath them for more warmth. The layered look of them adds a lot of style to your outfit, bringing it to the next level. I’ve always loved a big, longer cardigan, so I’m thrilled that they’re everywhere this season.

Shirt dresses. If you’re like me, you have a hard time with dresses once it dips below 80. Most of mine are sleeveless, strapless, and way too summery. I’m always looking for the perfect in-between dresses and typically don’t have much luck.

With so many shirt dress options in stores lately, I’ve been in heaven! Shirt dresses are the perfect transitional dress, and also great for layering when it gets even colder. The sleeves keep it weather appropriate, and they look great with booties!

Blanket scarves/ponchos. I am such a sucker for anything oversized and cozy, so what’s better than wrapping yourself in a blanket or a big poncho and having it be your outfit? There are so many great options out there for stylish ponchos and big scarves. I prefer to wear them over a basic long sleeve tee with skinny jeans and boots. Warm, stylish, and so comfortable!

Destroyed denim. I will never understand how a great pair of jeans that look like they’ve been through the ringer are usually more expensive than in-tact jeans, but it is what it is. Destroyed denim can be very classic and fashionable if done properly, and since the trend is growing there are lots of great choices out there at reasonable price points.

Try incorporating one or two of these pieces into your fall/ winter wardrobe for a trendy touch. Each piece is pretty versatile, so you’ll get a lot of wear of whichever you like most, and with so many options available you’re sure to find something that suits your own personal style. Just because it’s getting colder doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your style.

The kids are back at school and we are all getting back into a routine. After the awesome summer we had, I’m sure you are ready to get back on track with your health and fitness. Here are some tips for getting back into the swing of things: • Prep your meals: take a Sunday to prep meals for a few days or even the entire week. It will be easy to grab-and-go from the fridge instead of going to a fast food place. It helps you stay accountable to your goals!

• Drink your water: it’s important that you are getting enough water every day. Remember this tip – take your body weight, divide it in half, and that’s how much water you should have in ounces. Often, our stomach tells us we’re hungry, but in fact, we may just need water, so drink up!

• Limit fried foods: staying away from these tasty foods will help you and your body in the long run. Stick to things that are grilled or baked.

• Stay away from soda: it’s just not good for you. Plain and simple.

The chemicals and toxins are insane in soda, just stay away.

• Get up and move: take your breaks and go for a 15-minute walk around the building or outside. Getting up and moving helps the blood flow in our bodies. This goes for people who are sitting the majority of the day. Your body will thank you later.

• Set goals: small goals and big goals. By setting goals, you’ll have something to work toward. For example, a wedding, school dance or to get off a certain medication you’re on. These goals will push you to be better than you were the day before.

My Hollyhocks have developed orange and brown spots on the leaves and the edges are grey and curling. What’s going on?

It sounds like the plants have Hollyhock Rust (Puccinia malvacearum), which is a fungal disease.

Unfortunately, as the name would suggest, Hollyhocks (Aithaea rosea) are prone to it as are other members of the Malva family such as Hibiscus, Lavatera and Malvastrum. Hollyhock Rust affects the leaves, producing brown spots on the top and orange-and-yellow spore-filled pustules on the underside. The edges of the leaves turn grey and curl up, eventually turning to ash and releasing the spores. The fungus is airborne, which means that your Hollyhocks may have caught the disease from a neighbor’s plant and that in turn you can infect your neighbor’s foliage.

Hollyhock Rust thrives in hot, wet weather – just like our humid New England summers. You can create less of an ideal environment for Hollyhock Rust by watering at the base of the plant and giving the plants enough space to encourage air flow.

At the first sign of the Rust, remove infected leaves and place in the trash, not the compost pile. If you are comfortable with using fungicides in your garden, treat the leaves twice a week all summer long then in the fall cut the foliage down to the

ground and dispose of the whole plant along with any debris on the ground.

How do I properly get rid of my end-of-season yard waste?

I divide my waste into three piles: compost, city pick-up and trash. Into the trash pile goes any diseased plants, such as tomato or squash vines, along with any fruits or vegetables that have been attacked by pests or disease. This pile gets put into black trash bags and left in the sun for a few days to cook before going in the trash barrel.

In the city lawn bags go any healthy plants that have gone to seed, such as flowers, vegetables or grass clippings that included weed seeds, and any healthy fruits or vegetables with seeds. I also put in this pile small branches that will take too long to decompose in my compost pile.

Only the best stuff goes into the compost. This includes healthy plant material which has not gone to seed, leaves, clean grass clippings and leafy veggies such as cabbages or lettuces. I keep seeds out of my compost because if my pile fails to reach a hot enough temperature, the seeds will still be viable when I put the compost on my beds in the spring – and the last thing I need is more zucchini plants!

Johnson & Wales - Expanding One Building At a Time By: Adam Hogue

With the rerouting of I-195, Providence is enjoying the opening of new possibilities for growth in the vibrant downtown area. While prospects such PINE/CHESTNUT CORNER stadium, the as-yet as a new Pawsox July 31, 2014 unbroken ground of the joint nursUSAthe development of ing school/ and mixed retail space remains up in the air; anyone who has been through the straight intersecting streets leading up to 95 surely has seen that things are starting to happen.

Fencing wrapped in paper proclaiming Johnson & Wales encloses the scaffolding of a new academic building on the corner of Chestnut and Friendship streets in the old Jewelry District. Outside of the JWU student-run Starbucks on a hot summer afternoon, Lisa Pelosi, JWU Executive Director of Communications and Media Relations, gave me a quick orientation of the growing JWU Downcity Campus. Since starting out in rented space just over 100 years ago, Johnson & Wales University has grown to offer classes in fields where jobs are growing.

With a nationally renowned culinary JOHNSON AND WALES UNIVERSITY and hospitality program, their biology and physician assistant programs NEW ACADEMIC BUILDING add to JWU’sPROVIDENCE, growthRIas a University and their impact on Providence. The new academic building, which will be home to JWU’s School of Engineering & Design and the biology program, is a LEED certified addition to JWU’s Center for Physician Assistant Studies. The JWU PA program is the first of its kind in Rhode Island and a big draw for students in New England and beyond looking to hit the ground the running in the medical field.

The Johnson & Wales Physician Assistant Program is housed in a renovated building nearby on Claverick Street and it lines up diagonally with the Brown University Medicine School and the to-be-constructed joint University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College Nursing School in the Jewelry District. JWU looks to offer programs that lead to a “good career

path.” Together, the presence of a concentrated health and science corridor just down the street from Rhode Island hospital is sure to impact the kind of place downtown Providence is going to be. The old Jewelry District is becoming a fertile ground for medical programs and is slowly giving weight to the newly coined “Knowledge District.”

But for now, JWU is expanding one building at a time, looking to give students program offerings that can lead to a variety of fulfilling career choices and a new Engineering & Design building is the next step. With a slated opening in Fall 2016, Lisa Pelosi painted a picture with words of what the coming year will bring in changes to the I-195 land; a beautiful new building, expanded walking paths that better connecting the downtown campus buildings and more green space will turn unused space into a productive and fertile addition to an already vibrant downtown Providence. In the “knowledge District” the future looks bright.

What is the best way to maintain the gutters on my home?

Believe it or not, Fall is almost on our doorstep!!!

This time of year as football season kicks into gear and those of us who have grown things get ready to harvest, it is important to pay attention to those wonderful gutter systems that a good number of fellow Rhode Islanders have on their home.

Gutters systems are great tools for funneling away water as it is shed off the roofs of our homes and businesses.

If they are not properly maintained however, havoc can be wreaked with water backing up into soffits, etc. and potentially causing a lot of damage.

Here are a few tips to help make sure your gutters continue to maximize what they were meant to do: Above all else, make sure your gutter systems are free of debris and functioning effectively. All debris should be cleaned out of them and a water flow test should be run by running water through the system with the aid of a garden hose.

Check to make sure that all downspout joints are connected properly (with the upper part always being connected inside of the lower part). Also check to make sure that the downspouts are appropriately fastened to the building they were meant to be attached to with downspout straps in place wherever necessary.

If you decide to go down this route I encourage you to do your research and pick the system that seems best suited for your particular needs.

Gutter systems are tremendously helpful in terms of guiding water away from where it is not supposed to be.

If they are not properly maintained however, it is quite possible to realize damaging consequences.

Take a little time as Fall approaches to make sure that your gutter systems are set up and in the position to do what they were meant to do and it will go a long way!!!

Make sure all permanent joints (seams on corners or seams in the actual gutter runs) are sealed and are not allowing any water to drip. If you do have a leak, there is a product called Geocel (available through a number of local hardware & lumber retailers) that works great when painted on the inside of the gutter system at the seams with a throw-away paint brush.

If possible, install a gutter debris protection system for your particular gutter needs.

There are quite a number on the market (my personal favorite is the Gutterbrush system – see www.Gutterbrush.com for more information).
