Vegas Casinos Cracking Down on Comped Drinks
Sammy Davis Jr. would never have let this happen. The Los Angeles Times reports the days of comped drinks for Las Vegas gamblers may be coming to an end. “It’s kind of what Vegas is known for,” Scott Roeben, founder of Vital Vegas, tells KTNV. But in recent months, two of the biggest casino owners in Vegas launched systems to regulate the free alcohol being handed out to video poker players in their bars. And according to Vital Vegas, that means it’s only a matter of time until similar systems are put in place at bars all over Vegas before being rolled out to slot machines and beyond. Currently, the changes mean gamblers can no longer milk video poker games for cheap in order to drink for free, WGBA reports. MGM Resorts started things off by deploying video poker machines in bars at the MGM Grand and the Mirage that print out drink vouchers when gamblers have been playing for long enough. It says the new machines take the pressure off bartenders to figure out who deserves to have their drinks comped. But the major sea change appears to be happening at Caesars Entertainment, which installed colored lights on the backs of video poker machines in the bars at all nine of its Vegas-area casinos. If you bet the max—usually $1.25 or so—for four or five hands, the green light goes on and a free drink is headed your way. Accidents happen. Like, sometimes you steal a car without even meaning to. Surveillance video taken in Portland, Oregon, showed a woman unlocking Erin Hatzi’s red Subaru in Hatzi’s driveway and driving off, the Guardian reports. Hatzi said it didn’t seem like a normal car theft as the thief sat in the car in the driveway for a few minutes before driving away. Regardless, Hatzi notified police and her insurance. On Wednesday, Hatzi’s Subaru was back in front of her house with a note and $30 cash inside. “I more than apologize for the shock and upset this must have caused you,” reads the note, which Hatzi posted on Facebook. “So, so sorry for this mistake.” The note-writer says she told her friend to pick up her car, also a red Subaru at night. The next morning, the note-writer discovered her friend had chosen the wrong Subaru; hers was parked a block away from Hatzi’s home. The note-writer even left her name and phone number for Hatzi. The $30 was for gas. “It’s insane,” Hatzi tells KGW. “It’s like a bad sitcom that nobody would ever buy the story because it’s stupid and it makes no sense.” Apparently, keys for older Subarus can be interchangeable, and that’s what allowed Hatzi’s car to have what she calls “a little adventure,” the Oregonian reports.

As with most insurance systems, for the Affordable Care Act to work it needs some people—specifically young, healthy people—to pay in more than they get out to make up for the people who take out more than they put in, Vox reports. The problem? Those young, healthy people are finding that “remaining uninsured is a reasonably good financial option.” According to the New York Times, many people are deciding it’s cheaper to pay the fine to the IRS for not having insurance than to pay premiums to an insurance company. And that’s one of the reasons ACA premiums are going up next year. Not to mention that because the ACA allows people with pre-existing conditions to get insurance, nothing is stopping people from

paying the penalty and then later getting insurance if something happens. Tax and health policy experts say the penalty for remaining uninsured needs to be steeper—perhaps by hundreds of dollars—to be effective. For example, one man tells the Times he may “roll the dice next year” and hope his family doesn’t have any medical emergencies because the penalty is one-sixth the cost of his insurance.

Local Author Ray Wolf Publishes Book “Rhode Island Diners Today”

For others, a burger and fries at Haven Brothers Diner in Downtown Providence was the perfect way to end a night of fun, music, and dancing at the clubs. Since the early 1870s, diners have played an important role in America’s and Rhode Island’s cultural and culinary histories; and while these institutions are dwindling in number, they continue to attract legions of foodies who relish such tempting treats such as savory beef stew, warm buttermilk biscuits, blueberry pancakes, plates full of flavorful macaroni and cheese, and thick slices of delicious homemade pies. Innovative entrepreneur Walter Scott, who sold food from a horse-drawn wagon to employees of the Providence Journal, opened the first diner in the United States in 1872. Historians report that the eatery can be considered the first diner with “walk-up” service, as it had windows on each side of the wagon. Whether you pop in before dawn for a cup of java 10 ShopInRI
and a muffin, or enjoy a quick lunch at the counter, diners throughout Rhode Island still attract a loyal following for fans of all ages. Local author and historian Ray Wolf offers an entertaining glimpse at some of the Ocean State’s most beloved diners in his latest book titled Rhode Island Diners Today. For almost nine months, Wolf, a lifelong resident of the village of Hope in Scituate, visited and photographed 50 diners from “Woonsocket to Wakefield, and Burrillville to Block Island”. The popular writer, who admits his favorite diner dish is a hearty slice of meatloaf, shares that he has always been a fan of diners.
“The waitresses are so friendly, the food is usually good, they have fast service, and the prices are reasonable,” says Wolf. In preparation for the book, which was published in June, Wolf conducted exhaustive research about the manufacturing of early diners, and learned that in 1887, Worcester, Mass. entrepreneur Thomas Buckley began the first commercial production of lunch wagons. In 1893, Anne P. Haven, an enterprising widow, opened her own horse-drawn lunch wagon on the corner of Dorrance and Washington streets in Providence. It was a “White House Cafe” manufactured by Thomas Buckley. She named it Haven Brothers Diner because all of her brothers helped her run the business; and although there have been several changes in ownership throughout the years, the nostalgic diner remains a popular spot for students and others searching for an affordable late night snack. “The purpose of this book is simply to determine the location of all the diners in the Rhode Island,” Wolf adds. “There was no intention to rate the food or service.” In addition to offering practical information, such as addresses and telephone numbers, the book also offers a wealth of historical information obtained by Wolf through interviews with diner owners. While some people might think that an author conducting research for a book on diners might have packed on a few pounds during his culinary odyssey, Wolf, an energetic 74-year-old in good physical condition, reveals that he usually enjoyed nothing more than a cup of coffee and a toasted English muffin at each one of the establishments he visited. The one exception was at Eddie’s Diner in Cranston, where the author returned after his initial visit to enjoy a generous fish n’ chips dinner, served on a platter. “There was so much food that I took it home and enjoyed several other meals,” Wolf recalls.
According to Wolf, the captivating book offers a glimpse of the exterior of each diner and a few views of the interior. While the author took all of the present day photographs, many diner owners also loaned archival photographs, which are included in the volume. One thing he learned is not all modern diners are constructed of stainless steel; some brick and mortar establishments can be found in strip malls and shopping plazas. “I had a lot of fun writing this book, Wolf says. “I met a lot of great owners.” Rhode Island Diners Today is available at many of the diners featured in the book. Roasted Signorina Mushrooms with Pumpkin Puree and Baked Eggs
Fall is mushroom season, and Rhode Island is home to some amazing species of mushrooms, both cultivated and wild. One of my favorite mushrooms is the signorina, also known as “hen of the wood” or maitake. These mushrooms grow wild through the fall and are cultivated by some specialty growers, including RI Mushroom Co. If you prefer, substitute any other type of mushroom in this recipe. To make the puree, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut the pumpkin in half and scoop out the seeds. Lay the two halves of the pumpkin, cut side up, on a sheet tray, and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle with oil and cook for 30 minutes, or until the 1 small sugar pumpkin flesh is very soft. Allow the pumpkin to cool, and scoop the flesh into a blender and 1lb. signorina mushrooms, puree. Season the pumpkin puree to taste with salt, pepper and lemon juice. Ingredients

To finish, preheat oven to 400 degrees. Heat a small amount of oil in a saute pan over medium high heat, and cook the mushrooms until they are lightly browned on all sides. Turn off the heat and add 2 cups of pumpkin puree. Once the puree is hot, transfer the mixture into four oven-safe ramiken dishes and set on a sheet pan. Top each with a tablespoon of cream and sprinkle with cheese. Bake until the egg whites have set. Serve immediately.

BALSAMIC GLAZED CHICKEN Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails
I have chicken at least twice a week... can't get enough of it. So I'm always looking for new recipes. I especially love marinades, because the flavor penetrates the meat, making every bite count. The balsamic used in this recipe is not the fancy, super-expensive vinegar. I use the basic, $9-buck-a-bottle stuff. Ingredients 4 lbs. chicken parts or 1 whole chicken cut up 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons honey 1 1/2 tablespoon mustard (I use Gulden's) 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 2 teaspoons garlic salt 1 teaspoon pepper Extra virgin olive oil

If the breast of the chicken is really large, cut it in half so that it cooks as quickly as the other parts. Put all the chicken pieces in a large Ziploc bag. In a bowl, combine the balsamic vinegar, honey, mustard, rosemary, salt and pepper. Whisk to mix thoroughly. Pour the contents of the bowl into the Ziploc bag, seal tightly, and squish it around to make sure the marinade reaches all surfaces of the chicken. Marinate the chicken for about an hour at room temperature. Preheat the oven to 350. Using an oven-proof pan, heat some olive oil and then place the chicken pieces in the pan. Sear for 2 minutes on one side, then sear for 2 more minutes on the other. Place the pan in the oven and cook for 30 minutes, making sure the chicken has cooked all the way through.

Cornbread Stuffed Acorn Squash

Nothing says autumn like homemade stuffing, and then using it to stuff a baked acorn squash truly becomes a fall delight. Besides this dish being super tasty and filling, it is actually nutritious too. It is known to protect the skin, strengthen the bones, reduce blood pressure, and regulate cholesterol. Acorn squash is appropriately named because it looks like a large acorn, only green in color. The orange flesh inside is very sweet and dense. It’s a great squash for both roasting and stuffing because of its size and shape. This recipe makes enough stuffing for 3-4 acorn squash, depending on the size; or you could take the leftover stuffing and bake it as a side dish for another meal.
Ingredients: 2 acorn squash (cut into halves, with seeds scooped out) 1 box of your favorite corn bread (cubed) 1 pound of Italian sweet sausage ½ cup of unsalted butter, plus more for greasing the pan 1 ½ cups of diced celery 2 cups of sweet onions (chopped) 2 cloves of garlic (minced) ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 2 tsp. of poultry seasoning 1 tsp. cinnamon ¾ tsp. salt ½ tsp. black pepper 3 cups of chicken broth 1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees 1. Cut the cornbread into cubes. Place in a large bowl and set aside. 2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and break up sausage in hot pan. Cook until browned, and place in a medium bowl. 3. Add ½ cup of butter to skillet. When it’s melted, add onions, celery and garlic. Cook for about 5 minutes or until they have softened. 4. Add the apple cider vinegar to the pan. Cook for a minute, stirring up any bits of sausage or vegetables from the bottom of the pan. 5. Remove the pan from the heat and add the poultry seasoning, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. 6. Add this mixture to the cornbread; stir until incorporated. 7. Add the cooked sausage and chicken broth and stir. 8. Cut the acorn squash in half and scoop out seeds. 9. Place a generous amount of stuffing in each squash half. Bake for an hour or until the squash is tender.

From the Pilgrims’ Thanksgiving to Ours By Kelly Paterson Now that Thanksgiving is upon us, it’s often common for most people to plan for the big feast ahead of time. However, the typical menu we have come to feature throughout most traditional Thanksgiving meals across the United States is not entirely the same as what the Pilgrims and Native Americans have experienced for their Thanksgiving. As a matter of fact, turkey was not the centerpiece of the meal, as it is nowadays but rather, it is suspected that the wildfowl of choice was perhaps goose or duck. Also, venison was a primary source of meat for their feast. That is not to say that the Pilgrims or Indians did not cook wild turkey, but goose and duck were in abundance and more prevalent. Another bird that was plentiful was known as the passenger pigeon, a bird that no loner exists; they were extremely thick birds and very easy to capture. As far as the preparation went, the Pilgrims would roast the smaller birds and boil the larger ones. It’s most likely that the birds were stuffed, not with bread as it would be stuffed today, but rather chunks of onions and herbs were used for flavor. The original Thanksgiving was a three-day celebration and through research, it is believed that the birds were roasted on day one of the celebration, while the remainders of the birds were thrown in a pot the next day to make broth. Culinary historians have thought that much of a Thanksgiving meal consisted of seafood, something most of us often dismiss from our own Thanksgiving meals. Mussels were incredibly abundant in New England at that time and were easy to harvest because they would wash up on the shoreline. Such fish as eels, lobster, bass, and clams were also served. The Wampanoag dried and smoked their shellfish.

The Wampanoag were also known to have an extremely healthy diet. The forest provided them with chestnuts, beechnuts and walnuts. They grew flint corn (Indian corn), along with beans, pumpkins, and squash. Back in the early spring of 1621, the Wampanoag taught the English colonists how to plant gardens. Although we do not know for sure what was in these gardens, it was divulged in later sources that they grew turnips, carrots, onions, garlic, beans, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, and pumpkins. Corn was also very plentiful and likely made an appearance at Thanksgiving but not the same way we would enjoy it today. It would have been removed from the cob and then perhaps turned into cornmeal, which was boiled and pounded down to a soft consistency to make porridge, and then sweetened with molasses. One thing you would not have fount at the Pilgrims’ Thanksgiving feast was pumpkin pie or any pie to be precise. The colonists did not have butter or wheat flour to make crusts for pies or tarts. It’s crazy to think there was no pumpkin pie, but pumpkin did show its bright orange head on that day. The English settlers would take the pumpkin and hollow it out, filling the shell with milk, honey and spices to make custard, then they would roast the gourds whole in hot ashes. This was most likely a form of a dessert for them. Another crop so many people think was served at the Pilgrims’ Thanksgiving was potatoes, but white potatoes originated from South America and sweet potatoes from the Caribbean and had yet to filter through to North America. Not to mention there were no cranberries either! The Pilgrims and Native Americans were familiar with them, but they were used more as a natural dye for the Wampanoag than a food source. It would take another
fifty years before it was written that the English were boiling cranberries and sugar together to make a sauce. When it came to drinks, beer was very limited so it is safe to say that water was the beverage of choice to accompany the Thanksgiving meal. Now, 395 years later, we are still celebrating Thanksgiving with a table full of food that is both reminiscent and yet very different from what the Pilgrims and Native Americans experienced. Even though we live in a world where vegans exist, turkey is still sitting promptly in the center of most homes’ dinner tables on Thanksgiving. Other foods that grace today’s menus are cornbread or rolls, carrots, potatoes, sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, homemade gravy to pour over the mashed potatoes and turkey; but no Thanksgiving meal is truly complete without stuffing which is generally made with sage, onion, celery and croutons. However, occasionally sausage, apples or raisins will be added to the stuffing. The celebration would also not be complete without dessert. Typically, pumpkin pie is served but other pies such as apple and pecan are commonly found to be just as popular. As with most feasts, alcohol goes hand in hand and various spirits or cocktails may be consumed before the main meal. During the meal, there are usually drinks such as apple cider, soda, and wine for the adults, and then coffee is commonly served with dessert. Whether your Thanksgiving celebration is big or small, surrounded by family, friends or even strangers, just remember to be thankful for the things you have, and to keep in mind how important it is to help those who are struggling and are less fortunate than you.

The Perfect Homemade Apple Pie Ingredients:
Yield: One 9-inch pie Preparation time: 45 minutes Total time: 3 1/2 hours, plus cooling time
• 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided, plus more for rolling • 1 1/4 teaspoon salt, divided • 1/3 cup plus 1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided • 2 sticks (16 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces and frozen for 15 minutes • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, chilled • 1 large egg • 1 tablespoon whole milk • 3 1/2 pounds Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Golden Delicious apples, or a mix • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • Coarse sugar, for sprinkling • Optional: Vanilla Ice Cream
Directions: In the bowl of a food processor, pulse 2 1/2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar. Add butter and pulse until coarse, peasized crumbs appear, about 10 seconds. With the machine running, add vinegar and 1/4 cup ice water and process until the dough just holds together, about 30 seconds. Squeeze a small amount of dough between your fingers and if it is very crumbly, add more ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time (2 tablespoons maximum). Do not over process. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and push together into a rough ball. Knead a few times to combine, then divide into two equal balls. Flatten each ball into a disc with smooth edges (no cracks), cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate at least 1 hour (or up to overnight). Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F with one rack on the bottom rung and one rack in the center of oven. Place a rimmed baking sheet on the bottom rack to preheat. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough into a 13-inch round shape. Roll the dough loosely around the rolling pin, and then unfold it into a 9-inch pie pan. Gently lift and settle the dough into the pan. Trim the excess dough using scissors, leaving a 1/2-inch overhang, and transfer to the refrigerator. On a floured piece of parchment, roll out the second disc of dough to the same size as the first and refrigerate both crusts for 30 minutes. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk and set aside. Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick wedges. Place apples in a large bowl and mix with 1/4 cup flour, 1/3 cup sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and lemon. Fill the dough-lined pan with the apple mixture, packing apple slices as tightly as possible. Brush the rim with egg and milk mixture, reserving the excess. Top with the second dough round and press over apples to minimize excess space between apples and crust. Press the top and bottom crusts together and trim the top crust to a 1-inch edge around pan. Tuck top edge under bottom edge and crimp or decorate as desired. Cut five vents in the top crust for steam. Refrigerate pie for 30 minutes to set the crimp. Brush top crust with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Place pie on the preheated rimmed baking sheet and bake until the crust begins to turn golden, 20 to 25 minutes. Rotate sheet, move to center rack, and reduce oven to 350 degrees F. Continue baking until the crust is golden brown and you can see the thickened juices bubbling, 40 to 50 minutes more. What do you see as the most popular jewelry trends right now? “Rose gold and Morganite have been a hot pair for 2016 and I expect that it will continue along with Rose gold and “chocolate diamonds” during the holidays. For those of you who don’t know, Morganite comes from the Beryl variety of gemstone, a mineral that includes emerald and aquamarine. It comes in a range of hues from a very pale pink to a soft violet, and can be found in many places, from Brazil to Madagascar.”
2. Are there any gemstones that one should consider investing in right now?
“Always consider investing in diamonds. If you look at any graphs of diamond prices since 1928, they have almost always had a steep incline in value. Also, buyers should
consider investing in Tanzanite and Alexandrite, as they are becoming rare. The availability of these precious stones is becoming scarce. Tanzanite is found in only one place, near Mount Kilimanjaro, and is known for its exotic, velvet blue coloring. Fine pieces of Alexandrite are incredibly hard to come by, and are much sought after due to their color-changing abilities. They are sometimes described as “emerald by day, ruby by night”.”
3. What jewelry or gemstones might be a more economical purchase for those on a holiday budget?
“The most economical gems are the most plentiful. Amethyst, Peridot, Aquamarine, Garnet, Tourmaline, and Spinel are all good values and beautiful stones. For those who are not gem connoisseurs or geologists, Peridot is a bright, yellow-green stone found in lava, meteorites, and deep in the earth’s mantle.”
4. What are some more cost-effective alternatives than a diamond engagement ring? “Moissanite is an alternative to diamonds, with a comparable hardness and double the refractive quality. Its bling-worthy results come at half the price than diamonds. The original forms of this mineral were discovered in a meteor crater, however; the sources you will find in a store are of the synthetic variety, since natural Moissanite is incredibly rare.”
5. When shopping for gemstones, what should one be looking for in terms of authenticity/quality?
“When shopping for diamonds ALWAYS consult with a jeweler or gemologist that you trust. There is no way to know the quality of stone by simply looking at it over the counter, therefore, I always recommend a second opinion from an expert.”
6. In terms of pearls, there are so many options. Can you break down the different types? “A string of pearls can range anywhere from $35- $30,000, which makes them widely accessible for most budgets. South Sea pearls are the most valuable pearls, harvested from “wild” oysters. They are renowned for their silver, champagne, and deep golden hues. Akoya are considered the “classic” pearls, for their perfectly round shape and silvery shades.
They are available in varying qualities at reasonable prices. Fresh water pearls are plentiful and generally the least expensive; and they also come in a spectrum of colors, from white and pink shades, to lavender and other dyed options. When buying pearls, first consider the size, color, and shape that you want. These characteristics will inevitably dictate the type that you decide to purchase.”
7. When are the best times of year for jewelry discounts?
“The best time to purchase jewelry at a discount is in January and June. Most jewelers are looking to move inventory that is left over after the Christmas holiday season; and some end their fiscal year on June 30 and want to move inventory rather than pay inventory taxes.”
8. Once purchased, what should people know about keeping their jewelry safe and in good condition?
“Consult with your local, trusted jewelry professional for the care and keeping of your treasured jewelry; and ALWAYS have your jewelry appraised by a certified appraiser or graduate gemologist. What are the benefits of having extensions? Life as you know it will change! First, you will receive so many compliments on your eyelashes and not one person will realize that they are extensions. Clients are always
amazed at how eyelash extensions beautifully frame the eyes without any mascara, as well as how they boost their confidence. Whether you are a student with a busy social life, a mother with a million things to do, or a businesswoman with no personal time, extensions will enhance your overall being because eyelash extensions are more than a just beauty treatment. They add instant curl, depth and color, and allow you to have a “rolled out of bed glamour girl look” without having to cake on all of the makeup. Key benefits to eyelash extensions are they are incredibly versatile, a big time saver as you get ready for the day, and incredibly easy to maintain.
What are signs that you don’t have a good set of extensions? If brushing your extensions is causing you pain or soreness, it is a sure sign that too much glue has been used and perhaps stuck together at the base. This can lead to damage and breakage of the eyelashes. You know if your lashes have not been properly applied if they are poking or irritating your eyes. Eyelash extensions should not be felt and should be unnoticeable to you. Your lash extensions only last a week! This happens when not enough lash extensions are applied. If you think you’ve found the cheapest technician around, then chances are, they have not spent enough time on the process of providing a long lasting, full lash effect. Keep in mind; if your natural lashes are very sparse, delicate, and/or fragile, your extensions may not last as long as they do on others. Unfortunately, lashes can only accentuate what you have naturally. Lash extensions will last 3-6 weeks with proper care and a great application. In-fills are recommended every 2-4 weeks to keep your lashes looking full. The length of time between fills will depend on home care, your natural lash cycle, and how many lashes you have to work with.
Are eyelash extensions high maintenance? Eyelash extensions are not high maintenance at all! I always tell clients to leave them alone and they will be your new best friend. Well, as long you take care of them, they will remain your best friend. Clean them often with a proper lash wash recommended by your lash artist. Neglecting to clean them allows dirt and oil to get trapped in the lashes and loosens the bond. Most importantly, do not wait until the last minute to schedule your fill appointments.
Do you feel that eyelash extensions are an extension of fashion? Absolutely! I feel that we are seeing so many different versions of eyelash extensions from the salons to the runways. Last year at StyleWeek NE fashion show and New York fashion week, I noticed how there was much attention paid to the makeup drawn to the eyes, and the eyelash extensions worn by the models were worth a double take. Some thick and bold, some natural, and others, 3D vibrant colored feathered lashes that had that complete wow factor. Whether you see them on
the runway or in a business office, they complete a look and always accentuate the shape of the eyes.
What advice would you give someone who is on the fence about getting extensions? A common misconception of eyelash extensions is that your natural lashes will be damaged. Your natural lashes will never be damaged as long as the extensions are applied properly. Therefore, the most important advice I would give anyone is…
DO YOUR RESEARCH! Choose a reputable salon, spa, or eyelash extension-only establishment. The lash artist should be licensed, and be sure to ask for a consultation, as well as pictures of their previous work. At your consultation, your lash artist will answer all of your questions, explain the procedure, and can even perform a patch test. This is the application of 2-3 lashes so you can be a little more at ease and get a taste of what the process is like and how the extensions feel. During the consultation, the lash artist will determine if eyelash extensions are beneficial to you before you financially commit to them. Also, it is very important to ask what type of adhesive is used (it should be non-formaldehyde), and if they have a variety of lashes for customizing. Always ensure they are not applying cluster lashes, (cluster lashes and volume lashes are not the same and can be explained by the lash artist.) as classic lash extensions are one single lash extension on your natural lash. In this month’s article, I would like to talk about how to know which hair color is perfect for you. For instance, are you a spring, summer, fall or a winter type? The answer does not just depend on your ethnicity or your complexion. Knowing your color type is definitely useful. After all, nobody wants to look washed out, pale or older because of an awkward choice in hair color. The following color type descriptions will help you discover the colors and hues, which will not only enhance your hairstyle, but also your face. Colors for the Spring Type Complexion: The skin is light and clear and has a golden-yellow or peach tone. * Many spring types blush easily, and they tend to have freckles. Eye Color: The eyes are light-colored from light blue to green and quite often, golden spots enliven the iris. Hair Color: The hair is usually blonde. However, some spring types may be dark-haired or have red hair. Hair Colors for the Spring Type: Nature puts a golden sheen into the hair of spring types. You should therefore avoid ashen tones and choose warm colors instead. Ideal options are golden blonde, flaxen, honey blonde, golden brown, copper, or strawberry blonde. * Warm light to medium brown tones also work well. * Make sure that the hair color is not too dark. * The dramatic look only suits cool skin types. Colors for the Summer Type
Complexion: The summer type has tender rosy skin with a bluish to violet hue (undertone). Eye Color: The eyes are blue, bluish green, gray-blue or green. *Some summer types also have brown eyes with glints of blue, gray or green. Hair Color: The natural hair color of summer types is blonde or brunette. The ashen base color can sometimes look a little dull. Hair Colors for the Summer Type: Silvery or platinum blonde streaks add dazzling highlights to hair, which needs a little more radiance. * One or two shades darker streaks also create a livelier look. * In case you decide to tint or color your hair, ash blonde, ash brown or platinum blonde are your colors. * Red hair color for summer types should have a bluish hue like Bordeaux or mauve. * You should avoid red hair color with a mahogany, copper or golden blonde tinge because these colors can add years to your face.
Colors for the Winter Type Complexion: The skin may be very light. Sometimes, you may notice the faint greenish hues of blood vessels. In any case, winter skin shows cool bluish undertones. World-wide, wintertype skin is particularly common. Many people of African, Asian and Southern European descent are part of this group. Eye Color: The dark brown, gray, ice-blue or intensely green eye color clearly contrasts with the whites of the eyes. Hair Color: The natural hair color is black to bluish black or dark to medium brown. Hair Colors for the Winter Type: The rich tones of winter-type hair naturally radiate warmth. However, if you want to emphasize your natural hair color, you could enhance it by giving it a bluish-black gloss, or some fantastic highlights! * Aubergine (a dark purple color, like egg plant) and mahogany hair color accentuate dark hair. * Color treatments in your own natural hair color highlight the natural beauty of your hair and add more shine. * If you still want to color your hair

STAYING HOLIDAY FIT by: Susan Gazerro
Here we are at holiday time, once again. The nice, warm weather is behind us and bathing suits are put away. It becomes that time of year when our minds tell us that “holidays equal food.” I can’t believe it was a year ago when I wrote my November article about overeating at holiday time; and here we are again. My message hasn’t changed much. Allow me to repeat and continue to say, you are in control. Holidays do not have to mean overeating. Taste, do not indulge, or more importantly, do not overindulge. Here’s what we face: tons of food, drinks, desserts, 48 ShopInRI
being stuck indoors due to the inclement weather, and holidays so close together. First comes Halloween and all of the leftover candy from either the kids or what wasn’t passed out to the trick-or-treaters. The next holiday is Thanksgiving, a long day and night of endless food. Then, Christmas and Hanukkah, consisting of days of eating and drinking, and then of course celebrating the new year. For some people, this time of year becomes an excuse to not exercise and to gain weight. For a few, it becomes more of a challenge to maintain their
current weight. For very few, it becomes a challenge but they do find ways to exercise, and they make a conscious effort to not overeat. The truth is, it doesn’t have to be that difficult. Don’t make it an excuse or reason to eat and not move. Last year, my article was about what the Thanksgiving table looks like at my house. Being Italian, there is enough food to feed the entire state. That doesn’t mean eating everything on the table. If you stick to your favorites, overindulging is less likely. Remember, you always feel better walking away and not feeling full and bloated. It is obvious that if the food is in
front of us, our reaction is to just keep eating. We never stop to allow the brain to tell the stomach it’s full. This only happens when it’s too late and we are beyond full. You need to train your brain to ask your stomach, “Am I full?” Tell yourself, “I already know what this tastes like. I don’t need to keep eating it”. Contrary to this, I don’t want to take away from enjoying the holidays. This is and should be a joyous time, but that does not mean eating ourselves to the point we don’t feel joyous. My suggestion is to refocus on what the holidays are about. Whether it’s spiritual, being with family or loved ones, having time away from work, receiving a gift you need, or giving a special gift to someone; refocus! Don’t focus so much on the food. For most of us, it’s our natural instinct to be thinking of everything yummy we will be eating, but there are so many other things to focus on. It’s a matter of training your brain. You are in control. Small portions can be just as satisfying as mounds of food on your plate. Taste the food, but just a small portion. No need to overindulge. Everyone thinks they will start the first of the year
and be good, join a gym, or go on that diet, and that gives justification to overeat. Again, ask yourself, “Do I know what this taste like, am I really still hungry, will I feel good or not so good after I have this?” Control what you eat and do not have the food control you. This holds true for beverages as well. The first beverage, I suggest all my clients cut out is soda. Yes, even diet soda. You can and should enjoy eggnog or wine, but it’s all about moderation. Enjoy, not indulge. Eat and drink slowly. Allow the message of “fullness” to get from the brain to the stomach. Again, refocus your thoughts. Train your brain to think of something else. It’s hard for a lot of people because food is an easy escape, food taste good, food satisfies, food fills that void, but food also, in the end, can make you feel lousy. Sounding childlike, food should be your friend not your enemy. However; too often, we don’t realize it can be our enemy until we are so angry with ourselves for overeating; by then, it’s too late. Enjoy what you eat by not overeating!

Written By: Susan Gazerro About two years ago, Lisa Tamburini, a certified personal trainer (American Council on Exercise) since 2001, found a unique niche between personal training and golf performance training. As a golfer, Lisa met many golf enthusiasts that were trying to improve their golf game for many different reasons. This got Lisa thinking, and that thinking put her on a whole new path. When you sit and listen to her speak about how this all came to fruition, and where it’s going, you hear and see the passion and excitement in her voice, and in her demeanor. I don’t think even Lisa knew how significant Tamburini Golf Performance Training was about to become. specialist through Titleist. This certification is designed for golfteaching professionals, medical practitioners and fitness trainers. The program is evidence based and an educational pathway designed to teach industry
professionals how to increase player performance through a deep understanding of how the body functions during the golf swing. Titleist refers to this concept as The Body-Swing Connection.
Active TPI certified experts set the standard in the golffitness industry. They have reached a level of golf expertise that surpasses and continues to surpass the competition. By maintaining active certification, industry professionals are telling the world that they are serious about improving players’ performance. But along with first-class education, there are many other benefits to be gained. The program uses a “team approach”. The team approach means that Titleist mandates a team consisting of a fitness specialist, a massage specialist, a physical therapist, a golf pro, etc. When a participant needs any of the above services, any one or more of the team members are in place for referrals, as the team services can be common
necessities when one is going through any type of rehab or therapy. Lisa’s next move was to join forces with a golf pro. In the fall of 2014, golf professional, Mike Harbour, reached out to her and asked if she would be interested in moving the golf performance training to his indoor golf center, Mike Harbour Indoor Golf Center, located in Johnston. This opportunity would give Lisa her own space for the golf performance training, as well as her personal training. After deciding on a name and a logo, Lisa was on her way. Mike works on the mechanics of the golf swing which provides the “skill” base for golf, while Lisa works on the “fitness” aspect in order to improve the efficiency of the golf swing. They often work hand in hand when training someone, but they can also work separately. Mike has clients he trains for the skill required for the game of golf, while Lisa works on performance training. Lisa Tamburini is an amazing individual. She has been and continues to be a physical educational teacher at Pilgrim High School. She and Mike also organize a women’s monthly golf day event, in addition to all of her other endeavors. As if this isn’t enough, she is also a board member of the RI Brain Injury Association. As a board member, Lisa reached out to Debra Sharp, Executive Director of the Brain Injury Association for a project named Vets Golf Strong. The program is a golf performance training and instruction program for military vets who have sustained any type of brain injury. This program was designed for vets who have suffered PTSD. However, the program is not limited to PTSD; it is for any vet who has sustained a brain injury, as a result of serving our country.
Lisa then reached out to Mike Kenney, Manager of Golfer’s Warehouse in Cranston, who loved the idea of the Veterans’ program and has donated four new sets of golf clubs. She then went on to CVS. When she explained Vets Golf Strong to CVS Health, they also loved the idea as they felt the program aligned with the mission of the CVS Health Charity Classic. Lisa is an amazing woman who is not only responsible for making all of this happen, she actually donates her earnings from Vets Golf Strong back to the Brain Injury Association. It is important to mention that the Vets Golf Strong program is supported by a grant from the CVS Health Charity Classic, and a big thanks also goes to CVS Health, Golfer’s Warehouse, the RI Brain Injury Association, and of course Lisa Tamburini, as the program would not exist if without her. MOVIE REVIEW Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

Review By: Hannah Burke Tim Burton is one of the most renowned makers of dark films like The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, and Beetlejuice. Now, he brings his book, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children to life. The movie starts off with a boy named Jake (Asa Butterfield). Jake’s life is a bad one. He is shunned by other teenagers and he doesn’t have many friends. One day however, everything changes. He goes home to find his grandfather dead without his eyes, and his house ransacked. His grandfather suddenly comes back to life and utters mysterious words, “September 3rd, 1941.” His co worker, Shelley (O-Lan Jones) comes to help him. But Jake sees a tall and mysterious figure behind her and she shoots it, and it retreats into the darkness. Time passes and Jake goes to counseling to get over his loss. He learns about a children’s home his grandfather used to go to in Wales. He decides to go there with his father who likes to birdwatch. They get there and two boys help Jake get to the children’s home. But sadly, it’s destroyed. He decides to investigate and meets the children his grandfather told him about when he was a child. They take him through the tunnels and suddenly the house that was destroyed was brand new. He then meets Miss Peregrine (Eva Green), who tells him about the peculiar children living there. The peculiars are a group in society that have special powers. Miss Peregrine is a Ymbryne, someone who can transform into a bird and control time. She created a special time loop to keep her peculiar children safe. Jake spends time with the children and learns about their powers. Emma (Ella Purnell) is lighter than air, and Olive
(Lauren McCrostie) can set fire to anything she touches. Jake learns that Miss Peregrine can turn back time and make the day start again, which creates the time loop. Jake soon learns about Victor (Louis Davidson) who was killed by a Hollowgast. The Hollowgast appears every day but Miss Peregrine kills it each time. He stays with Emma and she tells him that he is a peculiar because only peculiars can enter a time loop. He doesn’t believe her until he sees the Hollowgast and learns of his peculiarity; he can see the monsters. Miss Peregrine tells him about the history of the Hollowgasts. They were a group of people that were transformed when an experiment went wrong. He learns that they follow a man named Barron (Samuel L. Jackson) who tried to use a Ymbryne to achieve mortality. This is because if a peculiar leaves a time loop, it will die. Barron reversed the effects by eating the eyeballs of peculiar children. He and his cronies hunt peculiar children and Ymbrynes for a living in order to fully achieve immortality because they only were able to leave the time loop, not live forever .Jake also learns that his grandfather could see the Hollows and he hunted them down for a living, but he never caught Barron. Barron soon appear in Wales and hunt down Jake, taking him hostage. He takes Miss Peregrine hostage and the other children fight to get her back. Overall, I loved the movie. It was a great story and the characters were really well played. Eva Green was my favorite, as her interpretation of Miss Peregrine really brought her to life. The only thing that I had a problem with was the storyline because at a few points it became very confusing. I give Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children a 4 out of 6 diamonds.

Put Thanksgiving Lessons to Work in Your Financial Plans Thanksgiving is almost here. Over the years, this holiday has taken on a variety of meanings, most of them centered on family, caring and sharing. You can carry these same values past Thanksgiving into your daily life – and you can certainly incorporate them into your financial strategies for taking care of your loved ones. So, here are a few suggestions: Protect your family. If something were to happen to you, could your family pay the mortgage? Could your children still afford to go to college someday? To protect your family’s current lifestyle and long-term goals, you may well need to maintain adequate life and disability insurance. Your employer may offer these types of protection as employee benefits, but the coverage might be insufficient for your needs. Consequently, you might need to supplement your employer-paid insurance with additional policies. Invest in your children. If you have young children, and you’d like to see them go to college someday, you may want to start putting money away toward that goal. You can save and invest for college in a variety of ways, but one popular method is through a 529 plan, which offers high contribution limits and potential tax advantages. Plus, a 529 plan gives you significant control and flexibility: – if you establish a plan for one child, but he or she decides not to go to college, you can name another child as the recipient. Be generous. You don’t have to be a millionaire to make meaningful financial gifts to your family. For example, if you have grown children, consider helping them fund their IRAs. You can’t contribute directly to a child’s IRA, but you can write checks to your children for that purpose – though, of course, they are then free to do whatever they want with the money. It’s not always easy for a young person to “max out” on an IRA, which has an annual contribution limit of $5,500 for workers under 50, so any help you can give your children in this area should be greatly appreciated. Safeguard your own financial independence. Almost certainly, one of the most undesirable outcomes you can imagine is to become financially dependent on your grown children. Festival of Lights in Historic Wickford Village Celebrates 31st year december 1st-4th

Celebrate the holiday as Wickford Village kicks off the season with its 31st annual Festival of Lights celebration Thursday, December 1- Sunday, December 4, 2016. The festival begins on Thursday, December 1st with the official lighting of the Tree at Updike Park and a performance by the North Kingstown Community Youth Chorus and the Lafayette Band. Thousands of white lights sparkle and set the streets aglow as the village is transformed into a winter wonderland. Window shop as store-owners show off their
Christmas spirit with stunning holiday displays and compete for awards. On Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday afternoon welcome Santa at the Town Dock on Brown St. as he arrives by boat and is led by kayaking “reindeer.” Join him for carols and a horse drawn hayride through the Village. DEPASQUALE SQUARE Cobblestones underfoot, music drifting through the air, planted flowers hanging from the street lamps and fill oversized planters on the plaza. You run into someone you know near the water fountain, and you chat about your families. Something changes as soon as you step foot on DePasquale Square in Providence. You can’t help but feel like you’ve been transported to an old world with old school values. Dining al fresco at any of the spectacular Italian restaurants will give you a true taste of being on a European holiday, when in reality you’re in your own backyard. DePasquale Square is the center of Little Rhody’s Little Italy on Federal Hill.
HAVEN BROTHERS DINER Haven Brothers Diner in Providence is one of the oldest restaurants on wheels in America, and was founded in 1893 as a horse drawn lunch wagon. In 1893, Anne Philomena Haven, a widowed immigrant, founded the diner with the proceeds from her husband’s life insurance policy. It was sold to another family in 1986. Every evening at 5 pm the diner is driven from its home on Spruce Street and is open for business next to Providence City Hall until 3 am every night and 4 am on Friday and Saturday nights. The highlights of Haven Bros’ inexpensive but vast menu include the “Dirty Blonde,” a 9-inch sub filled with two chicken tenders, two mozzarella sticks, fries and cheese sauce; the “Mad Dog,” a hot dog with mustard, relish, onion, ketchup, chili, cheese and celery salt and the “Murder Burger,” a burger with lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, bacon, grilled onions and grilled mushrooms.

MOHEGAN BLUFFS If you haven’t seen Mohegan Bluffs, you really haven’t seen Block Island. Standing about 150 feet above the beach below, the clay cliffs offer one of the most dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean in all of Rhode Island. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Montauk at the tip of Long Island. More than 140 steps lead from the top of the Bluffs to the beach below. Be especially careful as you reach the bottom of the stairs as you’ll have to navigate through the rocks to get to the water’s edge. For many visitors, the stunning view, the trek up and down the stairs and a dip in the Atlantic Ocean are the highlights of their visit to the island.
OCEAN HOUSE Ocean House is a large, Victorian-style waterfront hotel originally constructed in 1868 on Bluff Avenue in the Watch Hill historic district of a Westerly. The original 1868 hotel closed in 2003, was demolished in 2005, and a new facility in heavily revised form opened in 2010 on the same site, retaining much of the original structure’s form as well as the original name. Both the original and its reconstruction are noted for their rambling Victorian architecture and distinctive yellow siding. No walk around historic Watch Hill is complete without stopping to marvel at Ocean House, especially during a glowing sunset.
Rhode Island’s State House was built between 1895 and 1904. It has 327,000 cubic feet of white Georgia marble, 15,000,000 bricks, and 1,309 tons of iron floor beams. At night, the building glows beautifully from 109 floodlights, which help to make it visible to neighboring cities and towns. The State House dome is the fourth largest, selfsupported marble dome in the world. On the inside of the dome, there is a wonderful painting, “The Four Freedoms” by Rhode Island artist James Allen King. The State House is a neoclassical building that houses the Rhode Island General Assembly and the offices of the governor, as well as the lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and general treasurer. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
ROGER WILLIAMS STAT UE A statue of theologian Roger Williams was built in the late 1930s after Williams’ descendant Stephen Randall made a deed of gift for the monument. The approximate 15-foot tall granite statue commemorates Williams’ founding of the state of Rhode Island and his promotion for religious freedom. The statue depicts Williams gazing over the city of Providence.
LOOFF CAROUSEL Crescent Park Looff Carousel, also known as Crescent Park Carousel is a National Historic Landmark in East Provideence. The hand-carved carousel was built in 1895 by Charles I. D. Looff at Looff ’s Brooklyn factory and installed at Crescent Park Amusement Park. The ride’s fifty-foot platform contains sixty-one horses, one camel, two single coaches, and two double chariots. Fifty-six of the horses are jumpers. It is among the finest and least-altered of Looff ’s surviving carousels, serving as a showcase for his workmanship. ShopInRI 81

Most Rhode Island residents or business owners won’t know what “electricity and natural gas deregulation” is. I didn’t. I’m pretty certain I am not alone. However; not understanding the basics of energy deregulation could be costing you money, which is why I wanted to write this article. I sat down with Russ Monroe, a Managing Partner at Yolon Energy, a company born out of energy deregulation. When Rhode Island deregulated electricity in 1996, the first state in the country to do so, it helped create a new industry, energy brokerage. Yolon Energy is an energy broker. Residential customers should be aware that there are electricity suppliers in the Rhode Island market vying for your business. Your options are to simply stay with National Grid, which purchases energy and provides it to you at a set price (until it has to go back into the market to buy more), or you may go into the competitive market yourself to try to get a better price per kilowatt hour (kWh), the common measurement of electricity usage. If you opt to do this, you can lock your rate in at a fixed or variable pricing for different term lengths. Some additional advice for residential energy consumers, Yolon Energy stresses that some of the basics that apply to buying energy for businesses apply to the home. Keep Your Dog Healthy Keep Your Dog Away From Dangerous Foods!
As humans who love their dogs, it’s hard to not want to give them human food. Dog food, made with quality ingredients, and there are many choices today, are not only nutritious for your dog, but also delicious. Not every food we eat or find tasty is good for our four pawed friends. In fact, some food is extremely dangerous. Why do we think what we are eating is what they want to eat? They don’t know we are eating human food and they are eating dog food. If you insist on giving them food while you are eating, have some dog food or treats nearby while you’re eating, and occasionally give them one of those. Again, they don’t know the difference. They just want to eat something because dogs want to feel safe, they want love, and they always want food! Following are some foods that you 88 ShopInRI
might know are dangerous and some that you may not know that may cause severe sickness and even be fatal. You should absolutely avoid giving your dog any of these foods to avoid potential problems:
Chocolate: Most of us have heard chocolate is dangerous for dogs. The ingredients or chemicals that give chocolate its taste, especially dark chocolate, can be fatal to dogs. Many dogs have accidentally eaten chocolate and have been fine or mildly sick, but again, the right amount of chocolate can be fatal. Just keep it far away from dogs.
Candy: The artificial sweeteners in candy can cause a sudden release of insulin in dogs’ bodies. Again, candy may taste good to humans,
but dogs would rather have a dog treat.
Bread dough:
Yeast is very dangerous for dogs. The yeast in dough can increase and swell in your dog’s stomach, causing severe pain and destroying its tissue.

Avocado: Although one of my favorite foods to eat, avocado contains pepsin. This chemical is highly toxic, not only to dogs, but many other animals as well.
Leftover Bones: The danger to this old saying, “give the dog a bone” is that most leftover bones, even with some meat on them, can be a choking hazard to dogs.
Plums: It’s actually not the fruit itself that’s dangerous, and it’s not only plums. It’s any fruit that has a large pit or large seeds, as they can cause inflammation and intestinal obstructions. Ice Cream: Ice cream can cause intestinal problems. Although not fatal, dogs should not ingest this human favorite treat.
Chicken Jerky Products:
No solid explanation why this product from China is fatal to dogs, but it is; and that’s a good enough reason not to feed it to a dog!
Moldy Food: The best case scenario would be severe stomach problems. The worse case would be fatal. To me, the best case scenario is bad enough, so moldy food should just be thrown away.
Alcohol:
Dogs cannot process alcohol as well as humans, and most times when consumed by a dog, the result is fatal. Keeping our four legged friends healthy is our responsibility. I know you feel you are doing a good thing by treating your dog to some table scraps, but the truth is, it’s not what’s best for the dog. Just like giving them too many treats and having them overweight is not best for them. Dogs should maintain their healthy weight. A weight in which he/she is comfortable and able to walk, run, play, and do dog things, without carrying extra weight around. Their tiny waist line should always be visible. I always say your dog should be able to wear a bathing suit all year round. That will make for a healthy dog, and a healthy dog is a happy dog.
