ian festivals,” said Palmisano, who is a third-generation feast festival promoter and a well-known local philanthropist. Our family loves the area and has been a part of this community for years. When this space (for the restaurant) was available, it was like coming home again,” he continued.
The restaurant employs a dozen people and prides itself on serving dishes with a nod to the “Old Country.” Diners can feast on several signature dishes, including their bone-in veal chops that are so big that they take up the entire plate, their linguini and clams and their Italian stuffed artichokes. Patrons can also dive into their fresh fish dishes, chicken or veal parmigiana with pasta, or perhaps for dessert, their amazingly delicious homemade cannolis.
Perhaps their calling card is their "World Famous Expresso Martinis,” among other specialty cocktails that are infused with rosemary, ginger and other herbs to give them an authentic flair and taste.
Palmisano said that his goal for operating a successful restaurant is simple: “I want people to feel like they are eating at my house.”
He noted about how meals are cultivated back in Italy. “It starts with visiting the local butcher shop for the freshest meat, then walking to the garden to select the vegetables, and maybe to the local store to pick up a bottle of wine. Palmisano said that the restaurant strives to maintain this tradition because “farm to table” offers the best quality and flavors for their customers.
“I hope that when customers visit Anthony’s Italian Cuisine, they enjoy a little piece of Italy with every made-to-order dish,” he said.
The restaurant is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The bar remains open one hour after closing.

Flying This Summer?
Cut TSA Lines for Free
service by Clear, a free program that allows customers to book a spot ahead of time that sends them to the front of the line at TSA checkpoints.
Federal regulators gave a strong push to electric-powered air taxis by issuing a final rule for operating the aircraft and how pilots will be trained to fly them. The head of the Federal Aviation Administration, Mike Whitaker, said the rule recognizes air taxis as an entirely new type of aircraft that will soon join airplanes and helicopters in the sky. These aircraft take off and land vertically, like helicopters, but fly like fixed-wing planes. Many companies are working to get them on the market, but they have been held back by the lack of clarity over regulations to govern their use.
The Clear site explains how the process works: In advance of your flight (how long in advance depends on the airport), you’d simply log on to make a reservation for the time you’d like to pass through security. You’ll receive a QR code that, on the day of your flight, you’ll show to a staffer in the Reserve lane near the TSA checkpoint. The service isn’t available at every airport (there are about 20 in the US, Canada, and Europe currently listed) and even at those airports, the service may be limited to certain areas. A company rep said they’re working on adding more airports into the mix.
Whitaker said the FAA is stressing safety as it works to fold the new aircraft into the nation’s airspace. He said “poweredlift aircraft” are the first new category of aircraft in nearly 80 years, since the dawn of helicopters, and the rule will allow for their widespread operation. Air taxi supporters call them a cleaner alternative to passenger planes that burn jet fuel. So far, however, current technology limits their size and likely means that they will be used most often in urban areas. Companies envision carrying people and cargo.

Spending an autumn weekend in the White Mountains is an enchanting experience that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and seasonal charm. As the leaves transform into a stunning tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows, you’ll find yourself surrounded by breathtaking vistas that are ideal for hiking, photography, or simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. The crisp air invites cozy evenings by the fire, with local lodges and cabins providing the perfect backdrop for relaxation. Plus, the region boasts charming small towns with vibrant fall festivals, delicious harvest foods, and opportunities for outdoor activities like apple picking and scenic drives. Embracing the season in such a picturesque setting creates lasting memories and a deep appreciation for nature’s beauty.
There are a few food items that are synonymous with Maine, one of them being the ever-so-delicious lobster roll. Tourists have been flocking to every corner of the Pine Tree state for decades to devour the delicacy. However, not all lobster rolls are built the same. Often, the biggest complaint people have about a lobster is...not enough lobster. So, the Taste of Maine restaurant in Woolwich decided to solve that problem once and for all. Shared on Facebook by Taste of Maine restaurant, they claim to be serving the world’s largest lobster roll, a monster sub at least three times the size of a typical lobster roll. The number one question in comments seems to be about the price. Given current market conditions for lobster, the daily market price for the ’world’s largest lobster roll’ has been between $150 and $170. Some will scoff at the price, but if you’re traveling from afar just to get your hands on a Maine lobster roll, why not try the largest one?
Sugarbush is an overlooked gem among its peers, with many skiers heading to nearby Killington, Stowe, or Mad River Glen over this double mountain resort. So why shouldn’t you do the same? To put it simply, Sugarbush offers practically everything that those more popular ski areas boast, minus the crowds. So if you fancy schussing down a freshly groomed slope without queuing for a lift or dodging snowploughers this could be just the place for you!
Fourth of July Airfare Down
One of the companies in the new field, California-based Joby Aviation, praised the FAA regulation. CEO JoeBen Bevirt said the rules “will ensure the US continues to play a global leadership role in the development and adoption of clean flight.” Airlines see air taxis as a way to deliver passengers to airports. Delta Air Lines said in 2022 it would invest $60 million in Joby, and this month Toyota announced a $500 million investment. United Airlines is backing another California-based company, Archer Aviation, with an order for 200 aircraft that Archer said could be worth $1 billion with an option for $500 million more.
Reserve customers must still remove their shoes and jackets and take their electronics out for screening. Clear also offers a paid service called Clear Plus, which for the price of $189 per year allows users to not only skip to the front of the line, but also to not have to show ID; instead, your eyes or fingerprints are scanned. TSA PreCheck also offers a paid service ($78 for five years) that, because you’ve gone through advance vetting, means you don’t have to remove your shoes, jacket, laptop, or other items. Reserve remains an option for those who don’t want to pay. “Travelers can now save even more time by seamlessly reserving their spot in the security line,” a Clear rep said in a statement.
American Airlines To Start Enforcing Boarding Groups
By 27% From Last Year
Travelers who plan to fly over the Fourth of July holiday weekend can expect to pay less for their domestic tickets this year, as round trip tickets will be 27% lower this year than they were at the same time in 2022.
A round-trip ticket this year will cost a traveler a little more than $300, which is over $100 cheaper than last year. The prices of round-trip tickets are in line with how much round-trip tickets cost in 2019, according to an analysis by Hopper.
Terrain: The resort is made up of two interconnected mountains, Lincoln Peak, where the majority of trails are, and Mount Ellen. Other lower peaks include Castle Rock, Gadd Peak and North Lynx. For the type of gnarly terrain you would expect from Mad River Glen, just hop aboard the Castle Rock Double chair to Castle Rock. From the top at 3,812 ft, you’ll have the steep double black chutes of Lift Line and Rumble to get stuck into. If clocking up maximum vertical drop is more your thing then you’ll find the slopes here laid out much better for top-to-bottom shredding than at Killington. Even if you ski all 111 trails here, there’s also 2,000 ac of backcountry to explore in the Slide Brook Basin area!
This year, the most booked destination in the United States over the Fourth of July weekend, which is from June 30 through July 4, is Las Vegas. The domestic cities that follow include

In a new test, American Airlines is actually enforcing the boarding groups that are printed on its boarding passes. News broke after a passenger posted on Reddit about boarding with the first group in Albuquerque; in that passenger’s telling, a number of people ahead of them in line scanned their ticket only to get an “error beep.” The gate agent then asked them to step aside and wait for their boarding group, the poster said. “Was awesome to see this enforced and looked like it was system driven vs gate agent having to make that call.” American Airlines later confirmed to USA Today it is testing the new system in Albuquerque and Tucson and that it is happy with the results so far. More airports, including Washington Reagan National Airport, are expected to start using the new system soon.
”We are in the early phase of testing new technology used during the boarding process. The new technology is designed to ensure customers receive the benefits of priority boarding with ease and helps improve the boarding experience by providing greater visibility into boarding progress for our team,” a spokesperson for the airline says in a statement. Priority boarding is one of the perks of reaching elite status with the airline. But, as the Points Guy explains, “The agent can manually override the alert in certain cases, such as if you’re traveling with a companion in a better boarding group.”
There’s a Fresh Geyser Mystery in Yellowstone
She Became a Bride and a Widow Within Minutes
It’s unclear why the Steamboat Geyser had a record year
The Federal Railroad Administration announced the distribution of $2.4 billion in grants to fund 122 railway projects across 41 states and Washington, DC. Most of the funds will enhance track and bridge infrastructure, but a portion is allocated to training programs and ecofriendly alternatives to diesel fuel. More than half of the grant money focuses on aiding smaller railroads with upgrades to modern, efficient locomotives.
The initiative is largely financed by the 2021 infrastructure law backed by President Biden. In his statement, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the grants’ importance, stating, “Each project advances a future where our supply chains are stronger, passenger rail more accessible, and freight movement safer and more efficient.” Some projects will address safety issues that gained attention following the Norfolk Southern train derailment in Ohio, which created a significant chemical spill.
It’s the tallest active geyser on the planet— with an emphasis on “active.” From 2015 to 2017, it didn’t erupt at all. There was another largely quiet period from 1911 to 1961, but in 2018 it logged a record-setting 32 eruptions, a feat it has crushed this year with 47 eruptions, per the US Geological Survey. Why? Good question, and one that hasn’t been answered. It’s one on a long list of geyser mysteries, in fact. The geyser-research field is a thin one, and as Yellowstone National Park’s hydrologist explained the area beneath Steamboat hasn’t been mapped. However, seismic sensors there have revealed that the geyser’s water source may sit as deep as 130 feet.
Johnnie Mae had suffered two recent losses, including that of her father, when she stood in front of friends and family and committed to the love of her life on Monday. But within the hour, her groom was dead, too. As Mae and new husband Toraze Davis of Omaha, Nebraska, left the church where they said “I do,” Davis suffered a blood clot that made his heart stop. “It happened within seconds ... just after the ceremony had begun,” friend Jewel Roberson said. Family and friends are now rallying behind Mae, director of ECO Supportive Living, which assists the elderly and those with disabilities. “Johnnie Mae has suffered through so much,” says Roberson. Now “she’s been widowed and married in a 10-minute span.”
Highlights of the grant allocations include a $215 million investment for a new Hudson River bridge in New York and nearly $160 million to enhance track systems in Illinois, facilitating high-speed rail between Chicago and St. Louis. Another grant aims to improve track resilience against climate change impacts in Southern California. Approximately $1.3 billion will be directed to smaller railroads, supporting 81 projects nationwide.
“It’s seriously the saddest thing ever,” Tricia Pugsley said. She was supposed to DJ the couple’s wedding reception, but “they went to the hospital instead.” That’s where Mae “had to say goodbye to her new husband.”
Gisele Bundchen Is Pregnant
Two years after her divorce from Tom Brady, Gisele Bundchen is pregnant with her third child, according to a source who spoke to People. The supermodel, who shares a 14-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter with Brady, is now expecting her first child with Joaquim Valente. She was spotted with her jiujitsu instructor on a Costa Rica trip the month after her divorce was finalized, and while she denied a romance at that point, it was later revealed they’d been a couple since June 2023. According to TMZ, Bundchen told Brady and their kids the baby news before it was reported in the media. The gossip site’s sources also claim she’s about five to six months along. E! News reports she debuted her baby bump on a recent outing in Miami.
A GoFundMe page has raised more than $20,000 for Mae and the children the couple shared. Mae “always helps others; this is our time to help her,” the page reads. Some are finding solace in knowing that 48-year-old Davis died on what was evidently “the happiest day of his life,” a friend said. Another friend says she hopes the tragedy will teach others to care for themselves, including through annual
Most other geysers seem to be fueled by shallower reserves; deeper equals warmer, so that could be a factor in Steamboat’s ability to propel water to heights of more than 300 feet. Michael Poland with the USGS earlier this year said it’s possible that increased snowfall in Yellowstone of late has led to more groundwater to fuel the geyser. What scientists are saying is that there’s no link between the increased activity and any potential looming eruption of Yellowstone’s supervolcano. “Yellowstone has an incredible geyser system that is unrelated to magmatic activity—other than the magmatic system basically providing heat,” tweeted one volcanologist. USA Today noted that the Waimangu Geyser in New Zealand has managed to shoot water taller than Steamboat has, but it’s been

Real Life Happy Gilmore Hears From Adam Sandler
Elon Musk has been working to put together an “unusual family compound” in Austin, Texas to house at least some of his 11 known children and their mothers, according to the New York Times, which cites “four people familiar with his plans.” The sources say the world’s richest man has bought a 14,400-square foot Tuscan-style mansion and helped to buy a six-bedroom mansion directly behind it. When Musk is in town, he usually stays in a third mansion around 10 minutes walk away, the Times’ sources say. Fast Not Feast?
Thanksgiving was almost a fast not a feast! The early settlers gave thanks by praying and abstaining from food, which is what they planned on doing to celebrate their first harvest, that is, until the Wampanoag Indians joined them and (lucky for us!) turned their fast into a three-day feast!

Supporting Rhode Island’s Hospitality Industry
This Holiday Season
by Farouk Rajab President/CEO, Rhode Island Hospitality Association
Many Rhode Island hotels and event spaces offer tailored packages to create festive, memorable experiences for your holiday event. When you choose to keep your holiday gatherings local, you are not just investing in a one-time celebration—you are contributing to the long-term sustainability of these businesses.
As the holiday season approaches, Rhode Island’s hospitality industry is preparing for one of the busiest times of the year. From family dinners at local restaurants, to corporate holiday parties at event venues, to stays at our beautiful hotels, these businesses play a pivotal role in creating memorable experiences and traditions. As we celebrate the season, it is essential to remember that the holiday rush brings both opportunities and challenges for our hospitality sector.
I encourage Rhode Island residents and visitors alike to consider how their holiday spending can positively impact our local economy. Gift cards have long been a popular choice during the holiday season, but their importance extends beyond convenience for the buyer and recipient. Purchasing gift cards for local restaurants, bars, or hotels can provide immediate cash flow to these businesses, helping them cover costs during slower periods and allowing them to reinvest in staffing, inventory, and operations. Gift cards are an especially thoughtful way to introduce friends and family to a favorite establishment, encouraging repeat visits and continued patronage well into the new year.
When considering holiday gifts this year, I encourage you to explore the gift card offerings of Rhode Island’s incredible array of restaurants, bars, and hotels. Many establishments have bonus deals where buyers receive additional value with their purchase—an added incentive to show your support. Booking a reservation for a special holiday dinner, whether it is an intimate family gathering or a corporate event, is another way to support local hospitality businesses. Reservations help restaurants and venues better anticipate demand, manage their inventory, and prepare for staffing needs. This planning is especially crucial during the holiday season when the industry is often stretched thin due to high customer volumes.
For those looking to escape the holiday hustle and bustle without venturing far, Rhode Island’s hotels and inns provide the perfect staycation experience. Book a weekend getaway to enjoy a change of scenery, explore new neighborhoods, and support the local hospitality industry. Many properties offer special holiday packages that include dining experiences, spa treatments, and other seasonal rewards that create a sense of escape and relaxation. Encouraging out-of-town friends and family to stay at a local hotel during their visit is another fantastic way to boost the industry.
Finally, one of the most impactful ways you can support the hospitality industry this holiday season is by sharing your positive experiences on social media or with friends and family. A glowing review or a tagged post can go a long way in attracting new customers and generating buzz for our local businesses.
Whether you are savoring a meal at a cherished restaurant, enjoying a holiday-themed cocktail at a cozy bar, or taking in the festive decorations at a boutique hotel, sharing these moments helps reinforce Rhode Island’s reputation as a vibrant, welcoming destination.
This holiday season let us come together to show our appreciation and support for the businesses that bring joy, comfort, and cheer to our lives. By choosing to spend locally, we are not just giving gifts and creating memories—we are ensuring a brighter, more prosperous future for Rhode Island’s hospitality industry!

Dining Out On Thanksgiving
By Julia Romano
I find that as I get older and my children are now adults, it’s not such a bad idea, and actually a sense of relief, to be able to skip all of the hours in the kitchen (actually, days, for many) that it takes to prepare, cook, and bake, for just a single holiday meal.
It’s not that I haven’t enjoyed hosting the holidays, including Thanksgiving at our home for the past 20 plus years, because I did. But, keep in mind that my family’s Italian heritage meant that there were foods that were an automatic addition to the turkey and all of the trimmings menu. It’s like cooking two separate meals to satisfy different family members, who look forward to the addition of antipasto, escarole soup, and with no doubt, either lasagna, manicotti, with meatballs, and sausage. And this doesn’t even touch on the many desserts, all homemade of course.
So, I think you can empathize with my stance on taking a break, at least a temporary one.
At many of Rhode Island’s most popular restaurants, they offer the options of dining in, or, choosing a Thanksgiving meal that is prepared and ready to go.
I, myself, am not a turkey lover, but without the Italian food added on, I actually fully enjoy the traditional Thanksgiving meal. The only variance is with the stuffing. My family and I find the Italian meat stuffing made from hamburg, pepperoni, sliced olives & mushrooms, along with croutons, to bell have to do. more satisfying, but I have yet to find a restaurant
offering the Italian type, so the American style will do.
Often, dining in at restaurants on any holiday, however, can be a bit frustrating. After many tries at the dine-in idea, I won’t say that it’s an awful experience, however, it’s crystal clear that the service and the meal options seem to be scaled back. On a positive note, my family has never had complaints about whatever we choose because we all agree that the most important part of any holiday is being together, and following years of them witnessing the massive amount of work it takes for Mom, they graciously bear the minor inconveniences.
As the children were growing up, we never even considered going out for holiday dinners. Being in our home just felt more appropriate and comfortable. I’d say it’s mostly because my husband and I have always been intent on making memories for the kids that result from more traditional Thanksgivings & other holidays, surrounded by their countless cousins, who truly had the greatest time, spending fun time in our home.
Now, as I shared, our kiddies are now adults, and when the day comes when God blesses us with grandchildren, I will be more than happy to revert back to my kitchen and and glady cook up a homemade, traditional Thanksgiving feast, and yes, with the Italian dishes, if that’s what they want - all in the name of creating family traditions and memories for the new generation, but until that time is here, I will enjoy and appreciate the much needed break.
More than ever, due to the current “events” happening in our country, I feel there’s never been a more important time to educate our younger generation about the importance of family togetherness and family values.
Wishing everyone a blessed holiday season, filled with feasts, love, laughter, and the joy of being healthy and together!

The Importance of Shopping Local for the Holidays
As the holiday season approaches, the excitement of gift-giving, festive gatherings, and creating lasting memories fills the air. While many consumers gravitate toward large online retailers and chain stores, there is a growing movement advocating for shopping local during this special time of year. Supporting local businesses not only enriches your community but also brings a multitude of benefits that extend beyond the individual consumer. Here’s a deeper look at why shopping local for the holidays is essential and how it makes a meaningful impact.
Boosting the Local Economy
One of the most significant reasons to shop local is its positive effect on the local economy. When you spend money at a local business, a greater percentage of that money remains in the community. Studies indicate that local businesses recirculate about 3.5 times more money in the local economy than large corporations. This is because local businesses often source their products from nearby suppliers, hire local
employees, and reinvest in their communities. As a result, shopping local helps create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and foster a thriving community.
Unique and Personalized Gifts
In a world dominated by mass production, local businesses offer unique and personalized gift options that can’t be found in big-box stores. From handmade jewelry and locally crafted home goods to artisanal food products and custom artwork, local shops provide distinctive items that carry stories and significance. Gifting something unique not only demonstrates thoughtfulness but also supports local artisans and craftspeople, helping to preserve traditional crafts and promote creativity within the community.
Creating a Sense of Community
Shopping local cultivates a strong sense of community and connection. When you support neighborhood businesses, you foster relationships with the owners and staff, who are often your neighbors. This sense of familiarity enhances the shopping experience and contributes to a supportive and engaged community. Local businesses frequently participate in community events, sponsor local sports teams, and contribute to charities, reinforcing their role as vital community members.
Environmental Benefits
Shopping locally is not only beneficial for the economy and community but also for the environment. Local businesses typically have a smaller carbon footprint compared to larger retailers, which rely on extensive transportation and supply chains. By purchasing from local vendors, you reduce the need for long-distance shipping and packaging, ultimately lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, many local businesses prioritize sustainable practices, such as sourcing ingredients from local farms or
using eco-friendly materials, making your holiday shopping more environmentally responsible.
Better Customer Service
Another compelling reason to shop local is the personalized customer service that small businesses offer. Local store owners and employees are often more knowledgeable about their products and are eager to assist customers in finding exactly what they need. This level of service creates a welcoming shopping atmosphere and builds trust and loyalty between consumers and businesses. In contrast, larger retailers often rely on automated systems and high employee turnover, which can result in a less personal shopping experience.
Supporting Local Jobs
Shopping local directly contributes to job creation and retention in your community. Local businesses tend to employ residents, providing jobs that often come with more personalized working environments. During the holiday season, many small businesses rely on seasonal employees, offering valuable work opportunities that can help individuals gain experience and support their families. By choosing to shop local, you’re not only supporting the businesses themselves but also the livelihoods of those who work there.
Encouraging Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Local businesses are often at the forefront of innovation and creativity. When you shop local, you encourage entrepreneurship, which is vital for a dynamic economy. Many local entrepreneurs take risks and introduce new products or services that reflect the unique culture and needs of the community. This spirit of innovation fosters diversity in the marketplace, ensuring that there’s something for everyone and keeping the local economy vibrant and exciting.
Fostering a Distinct Local Identity
Every community has its own unique character, shaped in part by its local businesses. By choosing to shop local, you help maintain and enhance the identity of your town or city. Local shops reflect the culture, heritage, and creativity of the area, contributing to a sense of pride among residents. This distinctiveness not only attracts visitors but also encourages locals to explore and appreciate their surroundings, fostering a deeper connection to their community.
Making a Conscious Choice
In an age dominated by convenience and fast shipping, making the conscious decision to shop local during the holidays becomes an act of mindfulness. It’s about prioritizing community over convenience and recognizing the far-reaching impact of your purchasing decisions. Each dollar spent at a local business contributes to the community’s well-being, helping to build a more resilient and interconnected society.
As you prepare for the holiday season, consider the profound impact of your shopping choices. By supporting local businesses, you not only find unique and meaningful gifts but also contribute to a thriving local economy and community. The benefits of shopping local extend far beyond the individual; they resonate through job creation, environmental sustainability, and the preservation of local culture. This holiday season, let’s make a collective effort to shop local, celebrate our communities, and create lasting memories together. Your support matters now more than ever, and it’s a choice that makes a difference.

Working Out for One Hour Is Only 4% of Your Day: How the Other 94% Depends on What You Eat
By: Stacie Venagro | World Miss Fitness America Pro
Many of us think that a daily workout is the key to achieving our fitness goals. It’s true that staying active is important, but there’s a key fact often overlooked: an hour of exercise is just 4% of your day. The other 94%—what you eat, how you rest, and your general habits—plays an even larger role in determining your success.
The 4%: Why Exercise Is Still Important
Working out for one hour a day provides countless benefits for both your physical and mental health. It boosts cardiovascular strength, builds muscle, improves flexibility, and releases endorphins that enhance your mood. But despite its importance, exercise alone isn’t enough to achieve your fitness or weight goals.
That’s because the time you spend working out is only a small fraction of your day. What happens in the other 23 hours? That’s where your food choices come into play.
The 94%: How Nutrition Dominates Your Results
The truth is, fitness doesn’t begin and end in the gym. Food fuels your body, repairs muscles, and regulates your energy levels. When it comes to losing fat, building muscle, or just improving overall health, what you eat is crucial. Poor food choices can easily cancel out even the most rigorous workout routine.
That’s why the saying, “You can’t out-exercise a bad diet” holds so much truth. While you might burn a few hundred calories during your workout, it only takes a few poor food choices during the day to undo that progress.
The 80/20 Rule: A Sustainable Approach to Nutrition
Aiming for perfection with food is unrealistic, but consistency is key. Enter the 80/20 rule. This approach to eating suggests that you should aim to make healthy, nutritious choices 80% of the time, while allowing some flexibility for indulgences in the remaining 20%.
Following this rule helps you stay consistent, without feeling deprived. It’s about balance—focusing on nutrient-rich, whole foods, most of the time, and enjoying treats in moderation.
Why Consistency Is the Secret to Success
Progress doesn’t happen overnight. It’s about the small, sustainable changes we make every day. Aiming for 80% consistency in your nutrition might seem simple, but over time, this will make a significant difference. Whether your goal is weight loss, muscle gain, or just feeling healthier, being consistent with your food choices has a compounding effect.
So, if you’re committed to working out for one hour a day, remember that the other 94% of your time is what truly determines your results. By staying 80% consistent with your nutrition, you’ll give your body the support it needs to thrive. The key to success is a balance between effort and consistency, and when both are in check, results will follow.
In the end, it’s the small, daily choices that lead to longterm transformation.
White Cross Is The Pharmacy To Choose For Medication Management
By Paul Lonardo
Some may be surprised to know that White Cross Pharmacy is a family business which was founded in Providence in 1933 by Orestes and Primo Iacobucci. Currently, Bob Iacobucci and Beth (Iacobucci) Brown now operate the pharmacy, representing the third generation at White Cross Pharmacy. The storefront was a familiar landmark in the neighborhood, located on the corner of Charles Street and Branch Avenue for close to seventy years.
To accommodate an expanding customer base, Bob Iacobucci, Orestes son and the second generation opened a second location in North Providence in 1987. White Cross also added a long-term care division in the early 1980s, servicing skilled nursing and assisted living facilities and residential group homes. Bob worked daily in the pharmacy for close to 60 years.
But in 1999, the owners realized that they needed to transform their business model in order to keep pace with the changes that were taking place in the industry and not get pushed out by the influx of retail pharmacy giants like CVS and Walgreens. They had already started diversifying into long-term care, servicing nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and group homes. White Cross Pharmacy was faced with a decision to continue with their current business model or to divest completely from the retail business and focus on long-term care.
“It was tough selling the retail space after so many years,” Beth says.
It turned out to be a sound business decision that has paid off not only for the Iacobucci family, but their many patients.
“We needed to do something different in order to sustain the business,” Bob says, “so we reinvented
ourselves a few different times to survive and flourish and decided to concentrate on the long-term care pharmacy space with a concentration on specialty adherence packaging for patient’s medications.” This decision would eventually open new doors in the health care space.
“We saw the opportunity with long-term care not only to survive in the short-term, but for growth and opportunity in the future,” Bob says.
“With that growth came automation,” Beth adds. “A lot of medpacking was being done by hand by our staff. We could only grow so much manually, so we need to invest in the technology to continue to gain business”
“There came a strong need in the market for multidosed medication packaging, particularly at a time when many facilities were searching for solutions to provide advanced care for their patients. Now we are seeing the same thing for patients trying to age at home,” Bob says.
Automation allowed White Cross to reimagine the way they provide their services to their customers. They utilize state-of-the-art equipment to safely and accurately package the MedPack, which is their signature product that takes the hassle out of getting bottles of medication. The MedPack has the medications organized by the Day and time you take your medications, and they are individually packed for you. The MedPack is truly for everyone and they deliver to any private residence or facility throughout Rhode Island as well as Massachusetts free of charge.
For young people today, White Cross Pharmacy is much different from the one their parents and grandparents knew.
have cognitive issues later in life. Also, for wine drinkers there’s good news; red wine is loaded with resveratrol, an antioxidant linked to increasing levels of good HDL cholesterol, which helps with the aging process.
“We’re a long-term care pharmacy, but we service the community as well,” Beth says. “We service both facilitybased patients, but also really trying to gain the attention of the community by letting them know we can serve everyone’s prescription needs even if you live at home and looking for reliable pharmacy without the hassle of the big-name pharmacies.”
Love for chocolate is something most of us have, but are convinced that it is unhealthy to consume. Today, we now know that dark chocolate, specifically, has a wealth of health benefits. One benefit is those who eat dark chocolate actually have lower body-mass indexes than those who don’t.
“You don’t have to be older to come here, or be very sick, or need specialty medication,” Beth says. “We service anyone, and we take all insurances, state Medicaid, Medicare Part D, all commercial plans.”
Another product we were told was bad because of its high saturated fat content is coconut oil. Today, we can’t read enough about coconut oil and all its health benefits. Yes, too much saturated fat is unhealthy, but when it comes to coconut oil, research has found that it has the ability to boost HDL cholesterol, and that it also contains antioxidants. Coconut oil has another benefit, as it can act as a substitute for body lotion. It is so good for your skin!
White Cross Pharmacy also works with nursing discharge planners and nursing agencies who identify patients that are taking multiple medications and need to have their prescriptions managed. The patients get referred to White Cross Pharmacy who then handle their adherence packaging.
In the last fifteen years, they went from one automated machine to having five up and running. And White Cross Pharmacy now employs over forty highly trained workers.
Most of us need our coffee. There was a time when coffee was deemed bad, as it was seen as an addictive stimulant, responsible for various health issues. Well, today research has found that drinking coffee doesn’t increase the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. It may actually lower rates of type-2 diabetes, could possibly reduce the risk for certain cancers, and even improve memory, mood, and energy levels. In 2016, the federal government updated dietary guidelines. They changed it to read that drinking between three to five cups of coffee per day is now seen as being harmless.
In April of 2024, White Cross relocated to a larger building in Lincoln, expanding their footprint from the 5,000 square foot facility to more than14,000 square feet, giving them plenty of room for continued growth.
We were also told that whole milk is too fatty. Drink skim milk or two percent. Now, we know that those who consume full-fat dairy are no more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes, than those who only consume low-fat dairy. It has actually been proven that those who drink whole
Peanut butter and nuts. We’ve always been told that peanut butter is too fatty and too high in calories. The truth is that nuts are like avocados. They contain the healthy fat our body needs. As far as peanut butter, studies show that regularly consuming peanut butter can lower the risk of developing type-2 diabetes.
Red meat has been considered to be unhealthy, as we were told it was responsible for all types of health problems. However, it has now been proven that there is no correlation between red meat consumption and a shorter lifespan, but the key is how much meat one eats. In moderation, red meat can actually be very good for one’s health. Besides being rich in iron, red meat has many vitamins, minerals, and protein
“Your diet is a bank account. Good food choices are good investments.”
For people who want to avoid the hassle of a chain pharmacy White Cross Pharmacy is a perfect alternative. They synchronize the medications, packaging everything together for convenience and delivering it free of charge. The MedPack is a great solution for anyone who is taking more than one medication and wants to simplify their busy life. Bob and Beth are proud of the heritage they represent as third-generation owners of a family business that was started by their grandfather more than 90 years ago. Their father Bob, although retired, can often be found at the pharmacy.
This is an investment in your health!
It’s hard to know what the future is going to bring, but you can count on White Cross Pharmacy to simplify your prescription regimen. They are located at 11 Blackstone Valley Place, Lincoln. To find out more

Before Technology, Fun & Fitness Was Found Outdoors, for Kids
By Susan Gazerro
I was thinking back to when I was a child, and how we played outside all the time. Whatever the season, we were outdoors and moving. I was having a conversation with a friend, and we started talking about the fun we had playing simple games like hide and seek, red rover, hopscotch, ice skating, roller blading, etc. All of those kept us running and active for hours. We certainly weren’t on technology, sitting idle, playing video games. No, we were always moving.
We also talked about how we attended outings for the companies our dads worked for. We talked and laughed about the games we played, and we both said how much fun it was. If the kids tried these fun games and activities today, after understanding what they are, they would have just as much fun as we did. The contests usually consisted of water balloons, potato sack races, egg tosses, wheel barrel races, three legged races, etc. The kids, today, would not know what these games are, but again, if demonstrated, they
would have a blast playing them.
Here are reminders about games that bring about some great memories.
The water balloon contest. The balloons are filled with water. You and your partner stand about five to ten feet apart and you toss the balloon back and forth. Each team tosses at the same time. The last team standing, without the broken balloon wins.
The potato sack race. You stand in this big, cloth bag, (all the bags are the same in size and height) and you all start at a starting line. You hop on both feet, holding the bag until you reach the finish line. First one to reach wins! You can also vary the rules, i.e., if you fall, you are automatically out, etc.
The egg toss. Each team has an egg, you stand three to five feet apart. You toss the egg, underhand, back and forth. Each team tosses the egg at the same time. The last team without a broken egg wins.
The wheelbarrow race. One person starts in a plank position on their hands. The partner stands behind them, holding their feet in the air. You all start on a starting line, and walk across on your hands, until someone reaches the finish line. Three-legged race. This was always one of my favorite races. The left leg of one runner is strapped to the right leg of the partner. You start at the starting line, and you keep the strapped legs in sync, while you run to the finish line.
These are such simple, low- cost activities, but they are so much fun, and they keep you moving.
If we weren’t playing a game outside, we were walking somewhere. We walked or biked everywhere. To a friend’s house, to the candy store, to the ice-cream or lemonade stand, every and anywhere, just to be outside. It was a much simpler time, but it didn’t seem simple then. We had fun, all while getting our exercise, without knowing we were exercising. It just didn’t seem like exercise because we were playing and enjoying it.
The world today is so attached to technology. Unless you go to a gym, or are involved in a sport or activity, you are not moving. The obesity rate is so high in young children, and I believe it is because everything is at our fingertips. No one has to move for anything. Social Media has taken over, especially for the youth. They not only sit, using their technology all day, it has become part of the mental crisis the world is in.
These children are all trying to be the next big thing. How famous can they be? What do they have to do or expose to become famous? Then, if they are insulted or ridiculed, some may turn to drugs and even suicide.
Technology has done much good in the world, but it has also made some things worse. If we could only go back to hopscotch, riding bikes, hide and seek, kickball, etc., I believe, not only would the children be getting exercise, they would be happier.
Healthy is not just a word for your body composition, healthy is as mentally important as the physical. I’m not sure what it is going to take to slow the world down. I’m not sure what it is going to take for people to realize what’s truly important. I’m not sure what it is going to take for people to get off their technology and communicate as humans, but I really hope something changes. We are sliding down a slippery slope.
“Purity and simplicity are the two wings with which man soars above the earth and all temporary nature.”
“Our life is frittered away by detail… Simplify, simplify”
Longevity for Lions How to Maintain Your Edge as You Age
by Kevin Kearns
Let’s face some facts here. Just like death and taxes, it’s a given that we will all get older. I like to say, however, we are becoming more seasoned, like a good stew or a fine wine. But the facts are that we are getting older every day. A fact of life is that you will inevitably “kick the bucket” to make way for the next generation. Facts are facts, and you can’t dispute them. However, as an exercise scientist, I can say that we can manipulate many variables so we can slow down the aging process. Now, before you go off half cock and say that this is about steroids and HGH, it’s actually not. There are other ways to “play” with the aging card, while we train hard and stay healthy. Or, should I say train smarter, not harder? How do I know? Because I live it every day. As of the summer this year, I, personally, turned 48 years of age! To put that into perspective, my father passed at age 48. Times have changed because people, in general, are more health conscious. To add more to the perspective, I have been working out faithfully for 35 years and have been personally training people since 1987! So, you could say I have some knowledge and flight time under my belt.
Let’s discuss the variables you can manipulate within your workouts. Seven years ago, one of my top clients passed away due to cancer. He made it to 80 years old and could have reached 100, in my opinion. David A. was a great client, mentor, and friend. I started training him when he was 70 years old and stopped when he was 77, due to his disease. The one concept he used to say to me was “it’s all about moderation, Kevin.” What is moderation at age 30 is different from age 40, and so on. At 70 years old, he would train 3 times a week with me, play single’s tennis 2 times a week, and walk 2 times each week, for one hour. He could hit pads for 5 - 3s, after doing a “Burn With Kearns” workout.
VARIABLE 1- EVERYTHING IN MODERATION.
The principle is simple. You are not 20 years old anymore. You need to treat your body like a temple and what you put in is what you get out.
VARIABLE 2- LESS IS MORE.
High intensity training has been around for a long time. Training more intensely for a shorter time is a good way to keep up your physical fitness, while you are on the daily “gerbil mill “ of life. The days of putting hours in the gym are over; you need to train smarter.
VARIABLE 3- CHANGE IS GOOD.
Mix it up. The two words I absolutely loathe in fitness are “I usually” and “I always“ follow this workout. How can you expect results? Try something new. I started doing yoga in 2008, due to plantar fasciitis in both my feet. How did that happen? From running 340 concrete stairs, 3 to 4 times a week for one hour. Yoga fixed it and I was able to run on trails within one year. It was the best decision I have ever made for my longevity.
VARIABLE 4 - IT'
IS NOT NECESSARY TO KILL IT EVERYDAY.
This is a tough one for us trainers and athletes. We think we all need to crush ourselves during our workouts. The fact that you are working out should be enough. Every time you train, it’s a deposit into your ‘Fitness IRA.’ If you don’t have an hour to
train, train for 30 minutes; it’s better than zero.
VARIABLE 5- TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND NEW.
Joseph Pilates was ahead of his time and could have competed in multiple athletic endeavors. In the ‘70s, American Footballers were taking ballet to help with their balance, agility, and flexibility. What will you try differently today?
VARIABLE 6- YIN YANG; YOU MUST HAVE HARD WITH SOFT.
I like using steel and iron, as well, but I also get a great workout from resistance bands. Try using a band workout for “unloading the muscles,“ after a heavy weight’s day, the next day. We call it our “rubber and steel workout“ (see Feb issue 2015). The reason why those in China are all doing Tai Chi (Big hint here).
VARIABLE 7 - LISTEN TO YOUR JOINTS.
When in doubt, listen to what your body tells you. If running on a hard surface hurts, try trail running
or hiking. Like box jumps? Swap out the box for a high quality fitness trampoline like JumpSport, or try them on sand at the beach.
VARIABLE 8 - YOUR DIET
My exercise physiology professor once said, “As you age, you either have to decrease calories and maintain activity or increase activity and maintain calories.” What he was referring to was losing muscle mass as we age. Mix up your foods and eat differently each day. You need to keep your metabolism on its toes, too.
The good news is that you can still build muscle mass at any age and stave off Mother Nature’s attempt to slow you down.
Workout alternates:
Box jumps hard box vs switch to fitness trampoline
Stair running vs switch to trail running
Heavy dumbbell work vs resistance bands

it’s what he considers the most important lesson he’s taught his accomplished daughters’, Nicole, Amy & Talia.
You see, Anthony is someone who does not take his success for granted. It is never lost on him that he is truly blessed, and during the holiday season, Anthony & his family want everyone in the community to know that they are honored to make giving back a central part of their life’s mission.
What motivates Anthony and brings him the most joy (other than his precious namesake grandson, Baby Anthony, & his beautiful princess granddaughters’, Camille & Olivia), is providing for people’s needs, and during the holiday season, the communities’ needs are never more pronounced.
Throughout the past 41 years, Anthony has ensured that he & his family do their part to support & help people who may otherwise have no holiday joy. One of Anthony’s favorite family annual adventures begins every November. Taking time away from your retail business during peak holiday season can be a big deal for profits. Anthony, however, sets that fact aside & can be found at area supermarkets, scouring the shelves with his daughters and their friends, to overflow as many shopping carts as possible. The best part for them is putting massive food baskets together, (turkeys included, of course), for delivery to disadvantaged families to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day.
Throughout the years, countless turkeys have also been donated to many other individuals & organizations for low income families.
For Anthony, seeing people smile with a spark of relief in their eyes that comes from knowing they will be able to feed their families is what makes it all worth it!
What Does the Future of Social Security Mean for Your Retirement?
By: Edward Pontarelli Jr.
Social Security remains a critical component of most Americans’ retirement plans, and questions persist around its long-term solvency. While the number of Social Security beneficiaries is expected to continuously grow over the next decade, payments into the program via payroll taxes are likely to slow. This dynamic is creating anxiety for many about whether they can rely on Social Security to help fund their retirement. It can be beneficial to explore the role that Social Security may have in your retirement, and how to best prepare if there are meaningful changes to the program.
The future of Social Security. If you have been following financial news, you may have heard industry pundits commenting on the solvency of Social Security, and its ability to pay full benefits over time. Indeed, Social Security is currently paying out more than it is taking in, which many view as problematic. In May of this year, the Social Security and Medicare Trustees released their annual report, which predicts that by 2033, assets of the program will be depleted. It is expected that in 2033, the Social Security’s Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) fund will only take in 79% of tax revenue needed for benefit payments. As a result, payments under the program could be reduced by 21%. It’s widely expected that Congress may act to shore up the program before this happens, however, there are no guarantees. Planning ahead can help shield your retirement income, should Social Security be unable to fully meet its obligations.
Determine the role Social Security has in your retirement plan. It is important to understand where Social Security fits into your retirement plan. For many retirees, Social Security benefits provide key supplemental income because the program alone will not provide enough income to cover all essential and desired lifestyle expenses. Additionally, each individual’s benefits will vary depending on their lifetime earnings, and the age at which they begin taking distributions. If future payments are adjusted lower to make up for the deficit of flows coming into the fund when you retire, it may be wise to plan on utilizing other means for retirement income.
Take some time to determine your desired lifestyle during retirement and the associated costs, so you can craft a Social Security plan that aligns with your retirement goals.
Work with a financial advisor to adapt your retirement plan. A financial advisor can help determine the optimal payment plan for Social Security in your retirement. The age at which you begin taking distributions and where these distributions fit into the whole of your retirement plan is unique to you. An advisor can assist you in evaluating the variables that may impact the time at which you begin collecting benefits, such as your health and life expectancy. With careful financial planning, you can consider a variety of income producing investments that may contribute to your retirement security.
How Social Security programs morph and change in the future is largely outside of your control, so plan for what you can. It is never too soon to work with a financial advisor to plot various scenarios for retirement, based on factors that are unique to you. Ultimately, knowing you’re prepared can help you feel more confident about retirement.

How a Donor Advised Fund Can Help You Maximize Charitable Gifts
By Carrie McPherson
Charitable giving is often a key pillar of estate and legacy planning for many investors. If philanthropy is important to you, consider the following details of donor advised funds and evaluate if they make sense for your plans to support causes that matter most to you.
What is a donor advised fund? A donor advised fund (DAF) is a monetary fund or charitable account managed and operated by a sponsoring organization, commonly a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, religious or financial entity. Contributors to a DAF make an irrevocable donation to the fund that is managed by an investment professional in accordance with the fund’s long-term goals and objectives. The donor is then able to advise the fund manager on which organizations and grants to allocate the money to.
What can be donated to a DAF? One of the attractive features of a donor advised fund is that multiple appreciating asset types, such as publicly traded securities, mutual funds, restricted stock, and cash, can be donated to the account.
Why utilize a donor advised fund? In addition to the possible upside on invested assets, potential tax advantages for donors and charities, alike, are another DAF benefit. Because this type of fund is typically professionally managed and operated by a section 501(c) (3) organization, the donated assets can appreciate tax-free over time, therefore, increasing the value of funds that can be distributed to grants and organizations.
Beyond having access to investment professionals, donors can generally take advantage of an immediate tax deduction on the amount of assets contributed, even if the funds are not going to be allocated directly to the intended charitable organizations until future years. Cash contributions are eligible for a 60% deduction of your adjusted gross income. Other assets may be eligible for up to 30% of your adjusted gross income. Be sure to work with a CPA or tax adviser to determine the most effective way to give to a DAF.
What are the downsides of donor advised funds? There are three main limitations of donor advised funds that are important to keep in mind.
To start, there are administrative costs for donor advised funds. The cost for management of different funds can vary, but it is important to understand cost structures to determine if the benefit of having professional management outweighs any administrative costs.
Depending on the donor advised fund that you chose to utilize, there may be restrictions on the organizations or grants you can support. While donor advised funds allow investors to maintain a relationship with the fund management as an advisor and make recommendations on where to direct the donation, the investment professional will ultimately decide what causes to support.
Lastly, contributions to a donor advised fund are irrevocable. Once you allocate assets to a DAF and a sponsoring organization, they no longer belong to you. It is important to work with a financial professional to determine the appropriate amount and asset types to donate to a fund, so that you can do so with confidence.
A donor advised fund may be an advantageous way to support charitable causes that align with your passions, and can ultimately make a difference for those in need. Consult with a financial professional and your tax adviser to determine if a donor advised fund is right for your financial plan.

“Zany Golf” Event Brought Joy, Awareness to Seniors in Need
by Mark Berger
There are plenty of events happening this fall. Many non-profit organizations use the time to encourage their followers to support various causes. So many charities are out working for any funds, grants, and other means of generating awareness (and money, of course) to further their mission.
While there are numerous galas, walks, 5K races, and other events designed to recognize these causes, one recent fundraiser went “outside the box” to draw attention to some impacted groups around Rhode Island.
The ABLTC Foundation in Warwick, recently held its second annual “Zany Golf,” event to highlight the plight of seniors throughout Rhode Island, who are either abused, neglected, or financially exploited. This event held at Mulligan’s Island, featured some outlandish feats of strength, hitting unusual targets on the driving range, and other such shenanigans.
While the fun and the laughs didn’t stop, ABLTC Foundation Board Treasurer Joann Leonard said that the reason for doing such an event is no laughing matter.
“We want to ensure that the voices of everyone are heard. There are some people who for whatever reason, are not being heard, and that should never happen,” Leonard said. “Certain groups around the state and beyond don’t know where to go, or are familiar with what resources are available to them. We are here to offer some advice and direction to anyone who is in need of help.”
Credit for creating this unique event goes to Leonard. She said that many organizations host golf tournaments to raise money. While that is a popular way of generating income, Leonard is not one for conventional norms. She figured why not try something completely different?
Mulligan’s Island provided the perfect place to hold the Foundation’s second-annual event. Leonard
brings her grandkids there and sees how much fun they have. The venue stuck with her until the idea got hatched for Zany Golf.
Those who know Leonard understand that she likes to have fun and be a little sassy.
“I like to have fun and also to make people a little bit uncomfortable,” she said, while laughing. “It was something out of the ordinary that would resonate with people who were tired of the same types of events. Nobody expects me to be normal!”
“Our event isn’t supposed to be serious,” Leonard continues. “This is not The Masters or The U.S. Open. We want people to have fun and enjoy themselves. We are raising awareness, as well as funds for our mission. It’s a good way to stand out from the crowd.”
Leonard was not kidding about the last point. Some of the miniature golf holes included players shooting over a toilet seat, using a hula-hoop and wearing a large diaper during their shot. They also had an accuracy challenge where people went to the driving range to hit a cardboard cut out of Leonard, another cardboard cutout and/or a toilet seat to win prizes.
After the golfing, there were raffle items, ranging from games and gift baskets, to “gag” gifts. Awards were given for the best mini golf scores, the worst scores, and other feats (good and bad).
The inaugural event in 2023, raised $5,000, according to Leonard. This year’s event did even better; it raised $8,000 for their cause!
Proceeds from the event will go to further the amazing work of the Alliance for Better Long Term Care, Inc., and the Rhode Island State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (RISLTCOP), whose mission is to improve the quality of life for residents receiving long term care services. The RISLCTOP is a residentdriven program. They advocate for the residents of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and those receiving hospice or licensed home care. who have been victims of abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation. The Ombudsman works to resolve problems these individuals face and effect changes at the local, state, and national levels, to improve quality of care.
They advocate on behalf of residents and identify, investigate, and resolve through mediation, negotiation, and administrative action, complaints filed by residents or individuals, acting on their behalf. Among them include:
Identify, investigate, and resolve, through mediation, negotiation, and administrative action, complaints filed by any individual organization or government agency that has reason to believe that a long term care facility, organization, or government agency (responsible for the regulation, inspection, visitation or supervision of facilities or which provides services to residents of facilities) has engaged in activities, practices, or omissions, that constitute a violation of applicable statutes or regulations, or that may have an adverse effect upon the health, safety, welfare, rights, or the quality of life of residents of long term care facilities.
Established in 2013, the ABLTC Foundation supports advocacy for long term care residents through programs, such as the Alliance for Better Long Term Care, Inc., a Rhode Island nonprofit corporation that originated in 1979, to protect the rights of the elderly population.
The ABLTC Foundation’s purpose is to benefit and support the purposes of the Alliance, directly or indirectly, through joint ventures, partnerships, or other entities, and to engage in any activities, directly or indirectly related.

What to Caulk & What NOT to Caulk on the Exterior of Your Home
My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www. LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting.com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column!
Caulking is one of those tools of the trades that when used properly, can be a huge help on the outside of your home.
On the same token, it can cause disastrous results, if used improperly…
Assuming you are using a good quality caulk (do NOT skimp out here!), and it is used in the right places (with the correct caulk product), the caulking should help guard against moisture sneaking into inopportune areas.
A great place to use caulk is on the trim joints of your home; this includes areas where siding meets the trim joints, as well as areas where trim joints come together.
Caulking should be applied after the rest of your surface preparation is done (including primer), and should be applied in a smooth, even fashion.
I am a bit ‘old-school,’ and when I caulk, I like to use my bare finger with the assistance of a clean rag to help smooth out the caulk in joints, after it is applied.
I suppose the more proper method is to use a wet rag - vs, your finger - when smoothing out your caulk-lines (though this just does not seem to be as fun!).
It is important to note that you should keep in mind the width of a joint you are working to caulk, when cutting the tube of caulk.
You do not want too thin of an opening for a joint that is a bit wider, nor do you want too wide of an opening if your joints were fairly tight to begin with, and simply needed some re-enforcing of the seams.
As valuable as caulk can be in helping to close up joints and prevent moisture from sneaking in, it can actually lead to some pretty horrible things when used in incorrect areas.
How do I know? Easy.
Because my super-genius guidance, when it comes to where to
use caulk, has led to some doozies, which have cost thousands of dollars to correct (I look at situations like this as “tuition”!).
There was a time, (going back a good 30 years), when I had our guys caulk every single nail hole on a home where solid stain was going on the front of it.
After doing this and applying the finish coat, every nail hole on the home bled through a darker version of the siding color, and we had to painfully dig out every bit of caulk from all those nail holes and properly putty them, which should have been done in the first place.
Then there was the time that I had our guys caulk the buttends of the clapboard all around our client’s home because cosmetically it made things look so nice…that is of course until the entire coating structure on the outside of the home peeled everywhere because we sealed up the house so tight, that it could not breath, and the built up pressure caused the paint to pop on the siding all around the house.
Again, painstakingly, we had to have our guys take every bit of caulk out from the butts of those clapboards and aggressively treat the exterior of the home, in order to undo our (unintended) wrongdoings.
There are numerous other examples.
Really paying attention to areas that should absolutely have caulk, however, versus those that should NOT have it (…and learning from the mistakes of others…) can help ensure that this simple product known as ‘caulk’ is able to have its benefits maximized, while avoiding what could be a costly mistake if not put in its proper place (even if it may look ‘nicer’ at the time!).

A Wish Come True Raises $628K & Honors the Napolillo Family at Gala
by Mark Berger
The Crowne Plaza Pavilion in Warwick, provided the perfect backdrop for the oldest wish-granting organization in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and now, Connecticut, on September 28th. It was there, that A Wish Come True’s “Wishes Take Flight,” not only generated much-needed funds to help kids ages 3-18, who are battling life-threatening illnesses, but to also honor the dedication of Providence College Athletic Director Steve Napolillo and his wife, Beth, who received the 2024 A Wish Come True Lifetime Impact Award for their contributions.
More than 500 people attended the event, which included a live auction, dinner, dancing, and presentations of courage, in the face of their diagnosis. The event raised more than $628,000 to continue their mission of reaching more families in the region. This is the best event they have ever had!
Executive Director Mary-Kate O’Leary said that the outpouring of support from those who attended, businesses that supported the cause, and community involvement, all contributed to this event being successful.
“I can’t put into words the outpouring of support we received to help these brave children and their families,” said O’Leary, who has steered the charitable organization for five years. “Honoring Steve and Beth was easy. They have invested more than two decades helping to raise money, and devoted their time and support to aiding these wonderful families and their wishes.”
The Napolillos have strong ties with A Wish Come True. Last fall, the organization dedicated a playroom and relaxation center in their Coventry office to Steve’s late father, Bob. “Nap’s Nook” is an incredible way to honor such commitment by this family.
During his remarks, Steve recalled the number of functions his family hosted over the years at their home, and throughout the state. There was one “Wish Kid” that was especially moving for him personally. One of the Wish kids, James, wanted to visit Yankees Stadium in New York to see a Yankees game. Arrangements were made to accommodate the family. The family had a wonderful day at the Stadium. When they returned from the trip, Steve invited the family to their home. He took James to his room full of Yankees and Providence College memorabilia, and told him to pick out whatever item he wanted.
Napolillo joked that he sweated out that decision.
“I own a signed Derek Jeter jersey. I don’t know what I would have done had he picked that,” Steve told the crowd. “He ended up selecting a signed photo of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, and was so happy. It was such a moment to see his reaction.”
Sadly, the boy succumbed to his battle at the age of 16. Not only did it hit the family hard, but it also hurt Steve and Beth, just as much. Remembering their prior meeting, Steve and Beth made a special presentation:
He gifted that signed Derek Jeter jersey to the family, as a tribute to his life and spirit.
Among the items up for bids were oneof-a-kind experiences, such as spending a night in Boston to watch the World Champion Boston Celtics, traveling to watch a Providence College Friars Men’s Basketball game in the city of the winner’s choice (which included dinner with Coach Kim English), a golf foursome at Newport Country Club, and trips to Bryce Canyon, Key West, and Tuscany. Bidding turned into a spirited race in a few cases. All in all, it was a victory for everyone, according to the executive director.
“The real winners were those who will benefit from their generosity,” O’Leary said.
Also in attendance were members of the Providence College Friars Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams, as well as other members of the community.
O’Leary thanked the numerous local businesses that came out to support the event. Chief among them was the event’s presenting sponsor, Massey and Associates, Inc., and its owner, Jeff Massey. He said that his involvement with A Wish Come True spans a few years, and he is pleased to see the strides O’Leary, her staff, and the Board have made in the past half-decade.
“Mary-Kate helped turn a non-profit that was struggling when she started (there), into one that has a $1.4 million budget,” Massey told those gathered. “She continues to reach those who need help. We are proud to partner with Mary-Kate and her organization to make these wishes happen.”
A Wish Come True grants wishes and provides resources to families that have a child struggling with a life-threatening illness, living in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Last year, they granted 43 wishes to children and their families. This was a significant jump from granting 19 wishes in 2022. They have already granted 24 wish children, and have 10 more scheduled through December.

“Spherehead”ing Into a New Endeavor
By Mark Berger
In her early twenties, Alizah Josette experienced a shooting pain in the center of her chest. By the next day, her left hand was numb. She was diagnosed with a thoracic outlet syndrome in her left shoulder, due to her neck muscles being in spasm. As a result, Alizah was advised to switch from a stomach sleeper to a back sleeping position. This was the beginning of an arduous journey through pain, migraines, and sleepless nights.
“As a back sleeper, my head would inevitably twist over my shoulder during the night, continuing to strain my neck muscles,” she said.
Over the next several years, Alizah tried various pillows to help her muscles relax and attain a good night’s rest.
“Sleep is vital to our overall well being, and my mental and physical states were exhausted,” Alizah recalled.
Determined to stop her headaches and pain, Alizah decided to invent her own pillow. The Spherehead memory foam pillow is designed with chiropractic principles to promote spine alignment and keep the neck muscles relaxed. Alizah describes the pillow as, “a completely revolutionary patented design; the Spherehead does not resemble a standard pillow.”
“Imagine a sphere, with the center being concave. That is what cradles and supports the head. Then, there is a neck indent that mirrors the curve of the cervical spine. This is what supports the neck—allowing the muscles to relax and unwind,” Alizah explained.
“The Spherehead pillow is for back and side sleepers,” Alizah continued. “The contoured shape in back, the spherical side, with the weight of the head in the center
concave is what allows the pillow to roll with the user during the night so they can seamlessly transition between back and side sleeping positions.”
Spherehead became available for purchase in May, 2024. Alizah contributes her success over these last few months to healthcare professionals.
“If you ask your chiropractor or physical therapist for a pillow recommendation, they typically respond, ‘there is no such thing as a good pillow!’” Alizah said. “I think that is why so many doctors are willing to try the Spherehead. Because of the unique shape, those in the health care fields trust this pillow may be different. The Spherehead pillow may help their patients.”
Helping people who struggle from neck, shoulder, and/ or lower back pain is why Alizah brought the Spherehead pillow to market. As she said, “I had a 17-year paralegal career; I loved my job and had no intentions of starting my own business. Once I invented the Spherehead pillow for myself, however, I soon realized it would help other people too. It felt selfish not to manufacture it.”
Manufacturing was another hurdle Alizah encountered along her entrepreneurial path. For her start-up small business, Alizah tried to manufacture a small quantity
of pillows in the U.S., but determined the cost to the consumer would be too high.
She explained, “Most specialty pillows are simply too expensive for a lot of people. I want Spherehead to be affordable for the average person. I believe the only way to accomplish this and have the pillows produced in North America is to open my own manufacturing plant.”
Alizah’s immediate goal was to produce the Spherehead pillow and help those suffering from various pain realize a good night’s sleep, but she doesn’t stop there. As she describes, “I own my molds in the plant overseas. In three to five years, my next goal is to save enough revenue to open my own plant. I want to give good jobs, and be able to keep the pillow affordable.”
The Spherehead pillow is receiving tremendous feedback. Alizah said, “I know it is helping people. I hear reports every day from people who no longer have headaches, or back pain. It makes the stress of owning a business worth it!”
There can be a couple challenges when using the pillow. Alizah mentioned, “There is a possible adjustment period. Some love the pillow on night one, others need a few nights, as it is so different, a mental adjustment may be necessary. I am trying to change the perception of what a pillow looks like, and the physical benefits it provides.”
The other challenge Alizah acknowledged is the charmeuse fabric pillowcase, included with the Spherehead pillow. She said that some people do not like the charmeuse fabric. Alizah said that she began with it because it is beneficial for all hair types. She hopes to offer pillowcases in a variety of colors and fabrics, as the company grows. For now, she wants people to know that the Spherehead fits in any standard pillowcase, so they can use their own pillowcase and still receive the benefits of the memory foam core.

Authentically Appreciating Your Employees During the Holidays: A Practice of Organizational Excellence
Alicia J. Alexander, MSL Founder of Make A Difference Consulting
Alicia J. Alexander, MSL, is the Founder of Make A Difference Consulting in Pawtucket, RI. As an Organizational Appreciation Expert and a Certified Facilitator of The 5 Languages of Appreciation In The Workplace, she specializes in promoting Authentic Appreciation and harmonious work cultures. Ms. Alexander is a published author on the topic of Organizational Development and Change. She holds a Master of Science in Leadership from Grand Canyon University, and she is pursuing a Doctor of Education degree in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis on Organizational Development (qualitative research).
The holiday season is a special time of year, filled with traditions, celebrations, and a general spirit of giving. For organizations, it presents an excellent opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and dedication of employees. Yet, with busy schedules, tight deadlines, and year-end reviews, authentic appreciation can sometimes be overshadowed by generic gestures or token gifts. While holiday bonuses or company parties are appreciated, employees today seek something deeper—genuine recognition and authentic appreciation.
What is Authentic Appreciation at Year-end?
Authentic appreciation goes beyond the occasional “thank you” or end-of-year performance review. It involves truly acknowledging employees as individuals, celebrating their unique contributions, and ensuring they feel valued. In the context of Neuroleadership, a field that emphasizes the importance of the brain’s functioning in leadership and management, authentic appreciation is a cornerstone for fostering engagement, loyalty, and a positive work environment.
When employees feel genuinely appreciated, it activates areas in the brain associated with social bonding, trust, and positive emotions. This is more than just a momentary boost; it strengthens long-term relationships, builds loyalty, and increases overall job satisfaction. Employees who feel appreciated are more likely to stay with the organization, be productive, and even go above and beyond in their roles.
What Are the Risks of Inauthentic Appreciation?
On the flip side, inauthentic gestures of appreciation can do more harm than good. A generic gift card or a one-size-fits-all message may leave employees feeling unseen and undervalued. Empty gestures can erode trust and damage morale. Employees are quick to sense when appreciation is simply a task on the to-do list, versus when it comes from a place of genuine care and consideration.
During the holidays, when stress and expectations are high, inauthentic appreciation can exacerbate feelings of burnout and disengagement. This is especially true for employees who may already feel overlooked or undervalued throughout the year. Leaders need to ensure that holiday appreciation reflects a genuine understanding of employees’ needs, preferences, and contributions.
Why Build Authentic Appreciation Into Your Holiday Strategy?
How can organizations ensure they are authentically appreciating their employees during the holiday season? Here are 5 few key strategies that align with the principles of Neuroleadership and Authentic Appreciation:
1. Personalize Your Approach
One of the most impactful ways to show appreciation is by tailoring it to each individual. Recognize employees for their unique strengths, contributions, and efforts. Additionally, knowing your employees’ appreciation language is a great advantage during holiday planning. A personal note that highlights specific achievements or qualities shows that you’re paying attention and truly value their work. Go beyond the generic “Thanks for your hard work” message, and include examples that demonstrate their value to the team and organization.
For example, instead of a mass email, write a personal message to each employee, or hold small group meetings to express gratitude. This allows for a more intimate and meaningful connection. In line with Neuroleadership, this fosters a sense of belonging and significance, which are critical for employee engagement and well-being.
2. Incorporate Appreciation Into Everyday Culture
While the holidays are a natural time to express gratitude, authentic appreciation shouldn’t be reserved for just one season. Employees want to feel valued year-round. Leaders should seize the holiday season as an opportunity to reinforce a culture of appreciation that extends beyond December. By practicing Organizational Excellence through Brain-Based Leadership, the synergy of Neuroscience and Authentic Appreciation, regularly recognizing employees’ efforts, both big and small, you create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and respected.
Consider how you can integrate appreciation into everyday interactions, whether through regular check-ins, team meetings, or performance feedback sessions. When employees feel consistently appreciated, holiday gestures of gratitude will feel like an extension of an ongoing culture, rather than a one-time event.
3. Consider Non-Material Forms of Appreciation
While bonuses and gifts are appreciated, sometimes the most meaningful forms of appreciation are non-material. Offer employees time off to recharge and spend with their families. Provide flexible scheduling to accommodate the demands of the season. Simple gestures like acknowledging the need for balance and rest can resonate deeply with employees, showing them that you care about their well-being, beyond their productivity.
This aligns with the idea of “social capital” in Neuromanagement, where leaders invest in the relationships and trust of their team. When employees feel that their personal lives and wellbeing are valued, it strengthens their emotional connection to the organization.
4. Create Opportunities for Peer Recognition
Leaders aren’t the only ones who should be giving appreciation. Encourage employees to recognize and appreciate each other during the holidays. Peer recognition is incredibly powerful because it comes from colleagues who understand the daily challenges and contributions of their peers. Consider creating a space, whether virtual or in person, for employees to share messages of gratitude. This can be as simple as a “gratitude wall,” where people can post notes or a virtual kudos board. Not only does this foster a positive team atmosphere, but it also reinforces the idea that appreciation is a shared responsibility within the organization.
5. Be Mindful of Inclusivity
The holidays are a diverse time, with employees celebrating different traditions, or none at all. Ensure that your appreciation efforts are inclusive and respectful of everyone’s beliefs and preferences. Recognize that not all employees celebrate the same holidays, and be mindful of how you frame your appreciation.
Instead of focusing solely on specific holidays, consider recognizing the end of the year as a time for reflection and gratitude, making space for all employees to feel included. Inclusivity reinforces a sense of belonging, and ensures that no one feels excluded during a time meant for connection and celebration.
Conclusion
Authentically appreciating employees during the holidays is about more than just gifts or year-end bonuses. It’s about recognizing their contributions, valuing their well-being, and fostering a culture of gratitude that extends beyond a single season. By incorporating personalized gestures, regular appreciation, and a focus on inclusivity, leaders can create an environment where employees feel truly valued—not just during the holidays, but all year long.
Authentic appreciation is not just a feel-good gesture; it’s a powerful tool for building stronger, more engaged, and loyal teams. As organizations plan their holiday celebrations, they should take the time to reflect on how they can show genuine appreciation for the people who make their success possible.

Come visit Rhode Island’s
largest window treatment showroom ... or let us bring the showroom to you, with our FREE shop-at-home service.
Each month, Shop in RI Magazine profiles one member of “The Dream Team,” a weekly networking group that meets in Smithfield. This month, we feature Frank Anzivino of AnziTech, located in Lincoln.
Frank works on computers—from fixing them, to installing and wiring them for personal and business uses. He began AnziTech in 2016 after being in the industry for 30 years. He said it was time for a change and saw the perfect niche for him to work.
“There are other companies that can help someone individually, and other companies that can handle bigger jobs. There wasn’t such a company that helped small businesses,” Frank said. “My business can handle jobs from one computer to 20 computers. I can also be a resource for finding refurbished computers, which can be a better option than some newer models.”
Anzivino warns anybody and everybody about computer scams. There are so many out there that it could become head spinning.
“The well-known companies that have email systems are not going to call customers,” he said. “If someone contacts you asking for a credit card, then you should be suspicious. Also, look at the incoming email address and logo to see if they are legit. If you have any questions, then either delete the email or call me.”
Frank said he joined The Dream Team after a previous networking group that he was involved
with split. Many of those members formed this group over a year ago. He said it made sense to continue working with them.
“I was in a very successful group that eventually fractured. Since I already knew many of the current members, it made sense to me to stay with that group,” Anzivino said.
Frank covers Northern Rhode Island, Central RI, and southern Massachusetts. For more details about Frank and his services, please contact him at 401-400-2694 or frank@anzitech.net.
“The Dream Team” currently has 26 members and is growing. They meet every Wednesday morning, from 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM, at the Home2Suites Hilton on Douglas Pike (Rte. 7), in Smithfield, across from Laura’s Bar and Grill. The group is looking to grow its team and is interested in meeting professionals from various businesses, looking to connect and help each other grow through referral business.
