“It started as a silly side project,” creator Sarah Gaunt said. “It was my little thing to do. Titanic II Will Sail Same Route as Original

Replica will make maiden voyage in 2022 The makers of the Titanic II aren’t boasting about it being “unsinkable” but they do promise it will have much better iceberg-detection technology than the original, along with plenty of lifeboats. Blue Star Line Cruises says the replica ship, which was delayed for years by a financial dispute, will make its maiden voyage in 2022. The company says the ship’s maiden voyage will be from Dubai to Southampton, followed by a journey across the Atlantic, retracing the route its doomed predecessor followed in 1912. The replica, which will cost an estimated $500 million to build and is being made in China instead of Belfast, is going to have 2,400 passengers and 900 crew, almost exactly the same number as the original, and a very similar cabin layout. Blue Star Line says that after the maiden voyage, the ship will undertake world cruises for the rest of 2022. “The ship will follow the original journey, carrying passengers from Southampton to New York, but she will also circumnavigate the globe, inspiring and enchanting people while attracting unrivaled attention, intrigue, and mystery in every port she visits,” Blue Star Line chairman Clive Palmer said. 4 ShopInRI

Massachusetts’ first resort casino with expansive gambling and entertainment options opened with a Las Vegas-style flourish. Plainridge Park, a more modest slots parlor south of Boston, has been open since 2015 and Wynn Resorts promises to open a $2 billion casino development just north of Boston next year. The Native American tribes that operate Connecticut’s Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun resorts also are proposing a Hartford-area casino to directly compete with MGM Springfield. RI Native, Rocco Baldelli Becomes Youngest Manager in MLB

Although Rocco Baldelli’s time as a player was cut short by physical ailments, his career in baseball was only beginning to take off. The mind and the heart can be powerful forces. Seeking a fresh voice for their underachieving young players, the Minnesota Twins made the 37-year-old Baldelli the youngest manager in the major leagues by hiring a sought-after candidate who interviewed for vacancies with four other teams. The former Tampa Bay Rays player, assistant and coach will be a first-time manager, the first in the major leagues born in the 1980s. He replaces Paul Molitor, who was fired after four seasons with a 305-343 record. “I like to have fun. I like for the players to love showing up to that environment, to that clubhouse,” Baldelli said, adding: “I feel like when guys are relaxed and having fun out on the field, they play their best.” Baldelli’s most recent experience fit perfectly with what Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey and general manager Thad Levine sought. They were effusive with their praise of Molitor for his acumen, character and flexibility, but the closest Falvey and Levine desireD deeper connections with millennial players in hopes of more productivity on the field. “He connects exceptionally well to people. THAI GRILLED STEAK

ASIAN BACON

The original recipe called for skirt steak, but I didn’t have any in my freezer. I did have a fat ribeye, though, so once I thawed it, I sliced it lengthwise to get two large, thin steaks which would easily suck up the marinade I was going to make. And the ribeye was nicely marbled, so it stayed juicy and tender.

Sometimes the happiest of cooking accidents happen with bacon. My original plan was to make Chinese-style honey ribs for dinner. But instead of pulling a nice rack of ribs out of the freezer, I accidentally took out a slab of pork belly. I only realized my mistake when I thawed it and started cooking it, so I decided to continue the process with the pork belly instead. The results were pretty damn tasty.

1/4 cup toasted sesame oil 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 tablespoons grated ginger 2 tablespoons finely chopped garlic 2 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro 2 tablespoons chopped dry roasted unsalted peanuts 2 scallions, minced 1 tablespoon light brown sugar 1 tablespoon fresh squeezed lime juice 1 tablespoon chile oil 2 lbs. beef ribeye (or skirt steak or beef flap) 1/4 cup chicken stock (homemade is best)

Directions: •

In a bowl, whisk together the sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, cilantro, peanuts, scallions, sugar, lime juice and chile oil. Transfer half of it to a shallow dish.

•

Add the steak to the dish and turn the meat to coat it well. Cover and refrigerate the beef overnight. Refrigerate the remaining marinade.

•

•

The next day, light a grill. While it’s warming up, add the chicken stock to the reserved marinade. I like to heat it to combine it well, not letting it reach a boil, then remove it from the heat and let it come to room temperature. This will be the dipping sauce for the beef. Bring the steak to room temp, season with salt and pepper, and grill it over high heat until medium-rare, about 5 minutes. If it’s too cold to light a grill, or if you just want to use the oven, heat a cast iron pan, add a few drops of avocado oil, and sear the beef on both sides before placing it in a pre-heated 375-degree oven to finish cooking.

Mix the marinade ingredients. Set aside.

•

Cut the pork belly into pieces that are about 3 inches square. Place them in a large pot. Cover them with water and bring it to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes. Drain.

•

Place the pork belly pieces on a sheet pan lined with non-stick aluminum foil. Coat them with marinade while they’re still hot. Let them sit for 10 minutes.

•

Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake the pork belly pieces on the sheet pan for 30 minutes.

•

While the pork belly is baking, start the sauce in a large nonstick pan or pot: combine the lemon zest and juice, star anise, cinnamon sticks, honey and chicken broth. Bring it all to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.

•

When the pork belly pieces have finished baking, add them (and any fat or liquid in the pan) to the sauce pot and simmer (covered) for at least 15 minutes or until the meat is tender.

•

Turn the heat on high, uncover the pot and cook until the sauce is reduced to a glaze that coats the ribs. Reduce the heat as the sauce thickens to avoid the sugars in the honey from burning. When the pieces are sticky and gooey, they are ready!

•

Let a piece of pork belly cool…then slice the to the desired thickness and fry it like regular bacon….or just pop it in your mouth like pork candy!

Supreme Ricotta Maple Pumpkin Pie 15 oz cooked or canned pumpkin 5 large eggs 2 cups Supreme Ricotta Cheese (Whole Milk) ¼ cup milk ¼ cup maple syrup 1½ tbsp melted butter 1 cup sugar

Dash of lemon juice 1 tbsp cornstarch ½ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp ginger ½ tsp nutmeg Pie crust (single 10” shell)

Sift sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg together in a medium bowl. Set aside. Beat eggs slightly in large bowl with high speed mixer. Add milk, maple syrup, pumpkin, Supreme Ricotta, melted butter, lemon juice and sifted ingredients to beaten eggs. Beat this mixture at medium speed until well blended and smooth (about 5 mins). Pour mixture into uncooked 10 pie crust. Bake in 450 oven for 15 mins. Reduce temperature to 350 and continue to bake for 50 minutes. Serves 10.

Stuffed Acorn Squash Recipe INGREDIENTS:

- 2 Acorn Squash - 2 cups risotto - 1 cup cooked ground veal sausage - 1/2 cup craisons - 2 tbsp of blueberry goat cheese - 2 cups of chicken stock - salt - pepper

In a saute pan, combine and cook 2 cups of risotto, ground veal sausage, craisons, chicken stock with seasonings to taste. Cook in sauce pan until chicken stock has dissolved and at that point stuff the two acorn squash with the risotto mixture and cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes at 400 degrees or until acorn squash is fork tender. Serve and garnish top with the blueberry goat cheese.

2 cups Supreme Ricotta Cheese (Whole Milk) 3 tsps lemon juice 3 tbsps grated lemon rind

Crust 1 cup graham cracker crumbs 1⁄4 cup powdered sugar 3 tbsps melted butter

Prepare Crust Blend crumbs, sugar and butter. Press firmly and evenly on bottom and sides of buttered 9” spring form pan. Prepare Filling Beat eggs until light and fluffy. There’s a lot happening at

Providence Picture Frame & Dryden Gallery. By Patrick Burke There’s everything to do with framing – from customs to readymade, installations, restorations, items to frame – plus local art and history filling three repurposed-mill floors. Stepping into the foyer’s Red Gallery is just the beginning. From July through September , photographer Sarah Gaunt’s colorful Ken dolls inhabited the roughly 1,000-square-foot Gallery. The photo series features smiling plastic minuscule hunks arranged in whimsical winking scenarios. “It started as a silly side project,” creator Sarah Gaunt said. “It was my little thing to do. It just morphed into something ridiculous.” The Cumberland native works in medium format film photography by day, and she learned about cameras running around with her father’s 35-millimeter as a kid. The Ken doll shots began more recently. “My mom found my old Barbies and Kens in the attic,” Sarah said. “My niece came over and was playing with them. They ended up on the kitchen table.”

contests. Gaunt eventually showcased them after Dryden Gallery Director/Designer Donna Parsons did some convincing. After scrambling breakfast for a doll the next morning, Sarah had her first Ken photo. From there came a rollicking motif and many amusing possibilities: what would Ken be like without Barbie? People started sending more Kens, which led to more Ken scenes. Gaunt’s father even makes some of their tiny wardrobes. Sarah had no goal; it was just a goofy diversion, an on-andoff lark, an inside joke turned meme. The popularity grew, Kens multiplied, some pieces were named via online caption 32 ShopInRI

“I love them,” Parsons said. “We’d be working and just hear laughter from people looking at the Kens. That’s what they were there for, to make you have a good time.” The photos display Kens visiting numerous angles of Gaunt’s imagination. Kens in familiar pop imagery; recreating iconic film stills, impersonating celebrities and musicians. Kens in goofy juxtaposed still lifes and selfies; doing real Ken things, depicting the aftermath of parties, posed in visual puns, imaginary places, with occasional human and toy cameos.

Beyond September, 15, Sarah Gaunt’s plastic tableaux will disperse, some to higher floors, joining previously exhibited works, as the rotating Red Gallery features six to eight shows a year. “We are the oldest and largest art and frame company on the east coast,” Gallery owner and Sarah’s husband, Geoff Gaunt, said. “We love what we do…and we’re really good at it.” “As far as our suppliers say,” Geoff Gaunt continued, “We are the oldest business of our kind in the country.” Providence Picture Frame has operated since 1850. Since 1977, it has been in its current location, occupying a historic mill near the Branch Ave. and North Main St. intersection.

“Eight years ago, we got back into photography,” Gaunt said. “There was a period there – about a hundred years or so ago – that we worked with photography. We were always doing framing though.” It was called the Providence Portrait Framing Company when it occupied a small shop in the original Arcade which sold frames and had a portrait studio, utilizing the glass ceiling for antique photography equipment. Unhappy at departing the Arcade, the original owner took the original storefront with him. It’s currently on the second floor at Dryden Lane. “The first floor is also the workshop,” Parsons said, giving a tour. “The frame store and the printing department. Anything to do with framing-slash-artwork.” “Upstairs is the stable of artists we support,” Parsons continued. Parsons has directed the galleries for over five years and has been with the company over 15. “Luckily,” Parsons said, “We’ve worked it out that the people who show leave a couple of pieces. You can still buy them, and we can still get ahold of everything if it hasn’t been sold.” What better way to display frames than to frame art? From the first-floor Red gallery, to the eclectic secondfloor Piano Room, to the Grand Gallery upstairs, and everything in between – it’s a winding stroll of a collection, passing through vibrant rooms with partitions for different themes. There’s 30,000-total square footage, easy to get lost somewhere between Realism and Surrealism. There’s a local focus, but a wide vision. Browse paintings, photography, prints, mirrors, lithographs, and the largest collection of antique maps and charts in New England. There’s framed RI nostalgia like Mad Peck’s ‘70s-era mimeographed Providence noir phone-pole comics. Frames of LIFE Magazine photographer Ed Clark’s slice-of-life work from the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s. There’s an employee art section, non-local imports, familiar, obscure and soon-to-be-familiar artists alike, in all styles, all curated by Parsons. The nearly 3,500-square-foot Grand Gallery has 25foot vaulted ceilings, holds 200 people, and hosts two to three shows a year. In the first weekend in October, world-known local artist Lorena Pugh debuted a show in the Grand Gallery that sent partial proceeds to Save the Bay. Pugh’s show was the culmination of her two-year long “Paintings in the Bay” series, which featured oil and gouache paintings of scenes around Narragansett Bay.

Seven years ago, in Wisconsin, Erica Molitor started her own unique candle company called Burke & Hare Co. She would soon follow her heart to New England and eventually end up living in Rhode Island. With all of the dark, mysterious, and spooky history attached to the area, it was a no brainer that her company would thrive here. After all, Rhode Island is home of H.P. Lovecraft, Mercy Brown, and all the spirits said to haunt the historic landmarks of the state; and we aren’t that far away from Salem, MA either. Molitor is celebrating her first year in business on the West Side of Providence. Her store is simply called, October.

The home décor sold at October is unique and dark. Items with skulls, black cats, bats and other animals decorate the walls and shelves. Almost everything here is made by someone local. At October, you will also find items from the darker side of pop culture, music and horror films. Items depicting The Addams Family, The Cure, and Type O Negative to name a few. Inventory is always changing and because many items are handmade, there are small quantities available, making them all the more unique. With the popularity of metaphysics and healing crystals, people everywhere have been interested in learning about their natural abilities and incorporating them into everyday life. It gives people a sense of self awareness and positivity. There are over 20 different kinds of crystals here including quartz, amethyst, and tourmaline to name a few. Molitor is always restocking what is popular and isn’t trying to capitalize on a trend.

Crystals have been around forever and their popularity seems to come and go, but she doesn’t mark up the prices. She actually insists that she is more than competitively priced. One of the most difficult decisions someone makes in their lifetime is purchasing a home. There are so many obstacles that can easily be overwhelming. From choosing where to live, finding the right realtor or the perfect house, making sure there are no major issues with the property, and closing agreements can each have their own roadblock. No potential buyer wants to encounter such problems during this process. That becomes especially true with finding a company that performs home mortgage loans. Choosing the wrong lender can lead clients in paying too much in interest and fees. Those are several reasons why David DelBonis, Senior Branch Manager for Semper Home Loans, located on 1288 Oaklawn Ave., in Cranston, encourages potential buyers and sellers to do their due diligence first. He has more than two decades of industry experience and has seen the ups and downs when customers either purchase or sell their home. They also have other programs to help Veterans, first responders (police, fire fighters, etc.), and other groups who may otherwise have a hard time qualifying for a mortgage. The popular VA (Veterans Administration) loans can provide 100% of a home loan for retired and active military personnel. If someone wants to live either in the country or rural areas, then there is a USDA Loan that may fit their client’s needs.

Celebrates One Year Anniversary By Mark Berger

One person’s vision of changing the fitness landscape combined with a chance meeting two years ago culminating in a partnership that led to opening ONE Cycle RI, located on 9 Cedar Swamp Road in Smithfield, in 2017. With Co-Owners Beth Ucran and Ashlee Barton gaining valuable experience from their opening 12 months ago, they are thanking the community by holding an Open House on Monday, November 12. The event takes place in their studio from 8:00 AM until 11:00 AM. This event features an endurance ride beginning at 7:00 AM, followed by a

variety of classes running every hour on the hour. Classes include cycling, HIIThigh intensity interval training, and TRX. There will be prizes, including a grand prize of one free month of classes, along with other activities. Ucran and Barton are asking local businesses and organizations to donate gift certificates, gift baskets and other items as door prizes. Ucran said both she and Barton have donated to various causes ranging from area food shelters to holding endurance charity rides. Barton added that they would both want to begin hosting

monthly events featuring a variety of charities. “Every month, Ashlee and I look to help a local organization,” said Ucran. “We are looking to ‘Adopt a Family’ for the December holidays. We strive to give back to this community. Ashlee grew up here, went to school (Smithfield High School) here and now runs a business here in a continuing effort to support others in need and offer the community a positive, healthy lifestyle activity.” That meeting happened close to where ONE Cycle RI currently operates. Ucran said the initial business relationship began between Barton and her husband, Jonathan, an Accountant who owns a CPA firm in Greenville. Barton mentioned to him about her interest in opening a new spin indoor cycling (boutique indoor cycling and strength training studio) based facility in Smithfield. Beth Ucran said a light went off in her husband’s head and got the process moving. “(Jonathan) mentioned the meeting to me, and he said there is someone who I think would be a good business partner with you,” Beth Ucran said, noting that she developed a love for cycling as a way of staying in shape; not so much as a career move. “He made the connection between us. All of this really all happened by happy coincidence.” Barton, who also works as the Smithfield High School’s Psychologist, said she has been involved with the fitness industry for 16 years. As a long-time resident, Barton saw opening this company as an opportunity to stay fit and to encourage others to do likewise. ShopInRI 54 “My reason for opening this company

was based on pursuing my dreams of sharing and building a love for health and fitness with as many other people who were interested,” Barton said. “Growing up an athlete, sports and fitness has always been a huge part of who I was. I enjoyed being a part of sports teams and engaging in physical challenges. I wanted to create a Team and Community oriented studio that offered accessible and highly motivating fitness for everyone.” Barton said once the idea to start a new exercise training facility began, the process went fairly quickly. She said it took about five months for everything to fall into place. By Labor Day, last year, the pair opened their doors for business. Beth Ucran said with her family living and working in town enables them to become active in the community. She also enjoys helping other begin their journey in to foster healthier lifestyles. Their classes are designed for anyone, regardless of ability or experiences, to maximize their potential, she said. ONE Cycle RI offers spin classes (indoor cycling), strength and conditioning classes, TRX Suspension Training, yoga, High Intensity Interval Training (a combination of cycling and strength/conditioning), and the newly-formed NamaCycle class, which uniquely combines yoga and cycling into a beautiful mind-body experience that enhances not only one’s fitness but overall well-being. Barton said there is something for all ages and abilities to try and achieve. “Our clients gain more than just wellness here.

They gain lasting connections with others and a deeper love for self-care. “We cater from anyone who has never done these types of activities to those have been doing them for years,” Barton continued. “We range in age from teenagers to those in their 70s. The most unique and important aspect of their indoor cycling class design is that each class mirrors outdoor, real-road cycling.” Ucran added, “If it’s not done on a real bike, then it’s not done in the studio. Weight loss 80% nutrition 20% exercise

Have you ever heard the phrase, “weight loss is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise?” If so, you know that what you’re eating has the most impact on your health. You might be asking yourself why? In my opinion, the phrase should be, “weight loss is 100% if one follows a good nutrition plan, along with exercise at least 3 times a week.” You absolutely cannot cancel out a poor diet with exercise. Exercise is beneficial no matter what, however; if you’re looking to lose fat, what you eat will determine your results. When clients come in for a consultation, the first question I ask is, “how is your diet?” If they have poor eating habits, I suggest that they start changing their diet before beginning a workout regimen. I don’t want this to sound like I am discouraging exercise; by all means, continue to exercise. The reason for this recommendation is because too often we overestimate the amount of calories burned during a workout, and some take this as an opportunity to consume more calories than necessary. Another reason is because in order to get the best results, knowing how many macro nutrients we need is important for pre and post workout meals. For example, if a client is working out with me 3 times a week and they’re aren’t consuming enough carbohydrates or protein, they are not going to feel their best. It is so important to fuel your body with the proper nutrients for muscle repair, recovery, and energy. There is a common misconception that carbs are the enemy, but the truth is that they are very important for us. There are many online resources that can help you determine approximately how much you should be consuming daily. If you’re unsure, reach out to a health and fitness professional to provide you some direction. Where do you start? Begin by tracking your food. Yes, that’s right, every bit of food you put in your mouth. Use this as a tool to help determine where you can make improvements. Once you’ve done this for about 3-5 days, start implementing changes. Set realistic goals that include your target water consumption for the day and your calorie intake. Be sure to also pay attention to carbs, proteins, and fats. You can consume only 1500 calories a day worth of simple carbs, but that, alone, is not going to help you reach your goals. Be sure to also track what you’re drinking. Sugary drinks can really pile on the calories. Don’t let fancy labels fool you; always read the nutrition facts and the ingredients because sugar is hidden in almost everything. Prepare! I can’t say it enough. Knowing exactly what you’re going to eat for the entire day will help to curb your temptation to consume whatever is available. Preparing several small meals per day will also help to keep you from feeling hungry. Keep it simple when it comes to your food; there’s no need to complicate it. Keep the sodium to a minimum. There are so many delicious spices that can be used to flavor your food that are nutritionally beneficial. If you have a crock pot or Instant Pot, find a healthy recipe that you enjoy and make a big batch for the week. Prepare uncooked meals ahead of time and store them in individual freezer bags, and defrost

as needed. Always have water on hand because it’s a critical part of a healthy diet. No matter your goals, a healthy diet is good for everybody. It doesn’t always have to be about weight loss or building muscle. Simply focusing on what makes us feel good and gives us energy is reason enough to eat healthy food. If you’re struggling with this, reach out to someone! Find a friend and support each other in this process. You can also work with a trainer. This program offers a one-time grant of $500 to local qualified patients. Last year, LLS disbursed $17,000 to 34 patients in Rhode Island through this program. The mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s diseases, myeloma, and myelodysplastic syndromes, as well as to improve the quality of lives of patients with these diseases, and to support their families. LLS is the leading source of free information for those with blood cancers, education and support for patients, survivors, families, and healthcare professionals, and supports patients during their cancer treatments, as well as helps them to navigate and access quality, affordable, and coordinated care. LLS also helps eligible patients to afford prescription drug co-pays and other insurance-related expenses. Last fiscal year, LLS disbursed $392,838 to 171 of local blood cancer patients who sought help. Another LLS

The Patti Robinson Kaufmann First Connection Program is a free service which enables patients and their loved ones to connect via phone with a trained peer volunteer who has experienced a similar blood cancer experience. The program makes an average of 6,000 first connections annually, 27 in Rhode Island, last year alone. In order for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to raise funds to help patients and their families, they operate several annual fundraising campaigns. As a result of the fundraising efforts of LLS, in 2017, a portion of the proceeds have funded 14 of the 18 drugs developed and approved by the FDA as cancer therapies. Man & Woman of the Year

The “Leukemia Cup Regatta” is a thrilling series of events that combine the joy of on-water sports with the critical efforts of raising money to cure blood cancer. Held at the New York Yacht Club in Newport, skippers register their boats and recruit friends and colleagues to assist their crews in raising funds. Crew members seek donations from friends, family, co-workers, and employers to sponsor their boat.

Is a philanthropic competition among a group of motivated and dedicated individuals in communities across Rhode Island who fundraise to drive forward the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission to end blood cancers. Candidates form dedicated fundraising teams and compete in honor of two local children who are blood cancer survivors. The man and woman who raise the most funds during the tenweek campaign are awarded the prestigious title of “Man or Woman of the Year” in their community. The man and woman who have raised the most funds across the US will be recognized as the national Man & Woman of the Year.

Light the Night When you or someone you love hear the words, “You have cancer,” it can be one of the darkest moments in their lives. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Light the Night” campaign brings light to the darkness of a cancer diagnosis through its mission to end blood cancers. Light the Night is a series of fundraising campaigns benefiting LLS’s funding of research to find blood cancer cures. Friends, families, and co-workers gather to celebrate, honor, or remember those touched by cancer. Walk participants carry white illuminated lanterns in honor of survivors and the power of research, red lanterns in support ofpatientsandfindingcures,andgoldlanterns in remembrance of those who have been lost to these diseases.

Students of the Year

The “Students of the Year” program is a seven-week campaignduringwhichselecthighschoolstudents participate in a fundraising competition to support theLeukemia&LymphomaSociety’smissiontoend bloodcancers. Thecandidateor co-candidateswho raise the most money at the end of the competition earn the Student(s) of the Year title. The students raise money in honor of a local patient hero who is currently battling, or is in remission, from a blood cancer. Students utilize professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and project management, ensuring they stand out among their peers when competing in this campaign.

Student Series/ Pennies for Patients

Student Series/Pennies for Patients is a set of science-based philanthropy programs where students gain the unique experience of helping thousands of people in their fight against blood cancers. LLS connects schools with local blood cancer patients, provide tangible life skills to participants, and allow students to see the impact they’re making in the lives of others. Team In Training The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s TeaminTrainingcampaigncontinues to be the leading endurance and training program which raises funds through the delivery of a transformative experience to inspire and support “teammates” through camaraderie, coaching, fundraising support and personal discovery. Teammates help LLS support lifesaving research, patient support, education, and advocacy efforts which benefit blood cancer patients.

Susan Gazerro I recently ran into a friend, Ricky Badessa. Last I knew, he was coowner and founder of the juice bars inside LA Fitness in Rhode Island. Ricky explained to me that he had transitioned from his business to the Cannabidiol (CBD) world. After our conversation, I felt like I had sat through four years of medical school. Ricky detailed the reasons behind his passion for his new business, Hemp & Flower, and explained how and why CBD’s effects can be beneficial to people with many different health issues. My goal is to assist in disseminating this information with the hopes of helping as many people as possible. The reason I wanted to relay Ricky’s information about CBD is because there is a huge interest and fascination with Cannabis in the country right now, but in order to be properly educated, it’s important to understand the difference between CBD and THC 62ShopInRI ShopInRI 62

(Tetrahydrocannabinol). The most important difference between CBD and THC is that THC has psychoactive effects (changes the mind or behavior when used), and CBD does not. This is what makes CBD products 100% legal.

What is CBD? CBD is a compound found in the cannabis plant that belongs to a class of molecules called cannabinoids. Our bodies have cannabinoid receptors (CB1 & CB2), which regulate our neurohormones. And, although CBD is a cannabinoid, it does not adhere to the CB1and CB2 receptors directly, as does its betterknown relative, THC. Instead, CBD affects these receptors indirectly and prevents the psychoactive effects that THC elicits. therapeutic effect. CBD also works with non-cannabinoid receptors in the brain that play a role in pain regulation, without the dangerous results that opioids are known to cause. The timing of my meeting with Ricky was perfect. I was about to take a very long flight and wanted to be able to relax without taking any type of prescription sleeping pill. Ricky recommended I try 1 or 2 gummy bears infused with CBD to take the edge off. I can tell you first hand that they did exactly that. I was not in a fog, nor was I groggy; I was simply relaxed! Confused? Q: Why does my friend pay no premium for his Medicare plan, but I do? A: There are two major types of Medicare plans: Medicare Supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans. Supplemental plans work as a secondary payor to Medicare and usually have a premium associated with them. These plans typically offer better hospital and doctor coverage and don’t usually contain any additional coverage beyond original Medicare. Advantage plans offer lower premiums in most cases, and in some cases have zero premiums. These plans are part of Medicare Part C and become the primary payor. In addition, these plans usually contain other non-Medicare covered services such as vision, hearing and dental, as well as prescription coverage built into the plan. Q: My mom went into a nursing home for rehabilitation, but Medicare paid none of the costs. Why did that happen? A: Normally, Medicare will pay 100% of the associated costs for the first 20 days upon entering a nursing home but certain requirements MUST be met. These requirements are: 1. The stay in the hospital must be for at least 3 days, not counting the day of discharge. 2. You must enter the nursing home within 30 days of leaving the hospital. 3. Tell me about International Educational Services (IED), whom do you mainly help: IED started over 25 years ago in CA, family owned business that expanded in to Providence. I run the Providence branch. Providing custom websites, content management systems and digital marketing services. Some of my current clients are from small business start-ups to medium sized corporations expanding the range of fitness, fashion, medical, construction and real estate and non-profit. Why did you choose this career path? I got my PHD in Marketing and Entrepreneurship in Univ. of Illinois in Chicago. When I moved to Providence to spent 6 years learning digital marketing courses and started teaching the class at Bryant. I began to work with clients in the classroom and realized that there is a huge gap for strategy. Weak web presence and no way of driving traffic to what they were offering. Social media, Digital Marketing, and my father and I got to work in synergy. I put together a strategy for your digital marketing plan to help get the companies jump-started. I also train to make sure they are implement this process correctly. I visit the companies once a month. What does your every day consist of? My day is very busy, I tend to my clients from first thing in the am in to the wee hours of the evening. Do you think that social media marketing is effective and how so? All the marketing theories and concepts still apply but these are a different set of tools. They are efficient, effective and measureable. It’s a dynamic field that keeps changing but I am the person that updates the client, they don’t have to do that work. Facebook has new options, like a shop. This is something that I can help my clients with. Where are you from originally? I am from the west coast and moved to Providence via Chicago and I have been here for 8 years.

What made you stay in Providence? I love my job, and the people and I was lucky enough to meet my husband here. Providence is a wonderful city with a lot to offer. I am happy to have Providence be my second home! How would you describe your personal style? Feminine, cIassic and minimal. I have classic pieces that fit together. My closet is mostly black. I am more of a feminine dresser with a chic edge. I love unique accessories mixed with a classic look, and you can never go wrong with black! Where do you see IES in 5 years? I see where the industry is going and we will be at that forefront. Whatever that forefront is, we will be there. The industry changes every day, nothing stays the same but we will be growing with that change and stay ahead of it. We want to be the pioneer for our clients to get there with us.

I really enjoyed the movie. I thought it was a well thought out film with a good storyline. However, the final act could have been a bit shorter to allow for a more fulfilling plot in the middle. The movie seemed to progress quickly, but after all, it does take place in one day. There were many unexpected plot twists like when Chris Hemsworth opened his mouth and did not sound anything like an Australian (which completely unsettled me), and many other sad and unfortunate moments. There were some characters that I wished had more screen time and more backstory, but there were also characters that had little backstory, but at the same time, it made for a good story.

Nowadays, most people are into movies for inevitable sequels and prequels, or ones that are created with cinematic universes. However, sometimes a unique movie appears and it helps take people away from crossovers, to something that is really special; Bad Times at The El Royale is one of these types of movies. The movie starts in a dingy hotel room. A man walks in and starts demolishing the room, while ripping up carpet and floorboards to hide a mysterious red bag. However, once the deed is done, he’s in for a surprise - a bullet to his head. Almost 10 years later, and we follow Darlene Sweet (Cynthia Erivo), an innocent singer that is heading to the El Royale for a place to stay before her concert. She soon meets Father Daniel Flynn (Jeff Bridges), a quiet and old man that is staying at the hotel after visiting his brother in the area. They arrive in the hotel and are quickly met by an empty reception desk and Laramie Seymour Sullivan (Jon Hamm), a quick talking vacuum and house-cleaning salesman, who is on a business trip. Next, Emily Summerspring (Dakota Johnson) arrives, a quiet and snappy hippie whose reason for staying at the hotel is unknown. The receptionist, a shaky and quiet boy by the name of Miles Miller (Lewis Pullman), finally appears and gives them their room keys, and the show begins.

I wished that they had not revealed Miles’ backstory until the end and used it as a dramatic reveal. Miles definitely grew on me throughout the movie. I felt bad for Father Flynn, as he was just an old man trying to achieve one simple goal before his life on Earth was over. Darlene was a fun character to watch, as she was one of the few with almost no backstory, and she was one of the only characters with no bad intentions. Her spunky and dangerous attitude made her entertaining to watch. Emily and Rose were two that like Darlene, had little to no backstory, however, in their predicament, it felt like there could have been more we could have known about them. Mr. Sullivan was interesting, but he seemed to be more of a filler character than anyone of substance. I wished he, also, had more screen time. Billy Lee was both interesting and captivating to watch. I thought very highly of the cinematography, with the shifts in different character perspectives throughout, as well as some of the shots. The ways some scenes were shot were extremely clever and it made the movie seem extremely dynamic. I give Bad Times at The El Royale a 5 out of 6 stars. Rated R for blood, violence, and language.

He sneaks past the desk and finds Miles passed out in a bed, a heroin needle in his arm. Laramie makes it down the stairs to a dark hallway, where the true intentions of the hotel are revealed, as he discovers one way mirrors where he can see into each room. He strolls by and at first, sees nothing too out the ordinary. Darlene has seemingly put up soundproof foam in her room and is singing. But then things take a dark turn. Father Flynn is seen ripping up the floorboards, and when he goes by the next room, Laramie is shocked to see Emily dragging a ShopInRI 79

ON THE ROAD EFFECTS By Jenn Lombari

To call Eric Barao a music enthusiast would be an understatement. With roots deeply planted in the style of power pop, Barao has been writing and recording music since he was a teenager, pulling influence from his favorite bands, The Beatles and The Cars. After his band, The Cautions, broke up in 2009, he started working on his solo album. Simultaneously, he was also trying to kick the habit of smoking. Searching for something to keep his hands and mind busy when he would normally take a smoke break, Barao discovered model car building. After the second car, he was bored with his temporary solution. So he asked himself,

“What else would I like to do as a fun hobby?” Barao was particularly fond of a sound he heard on an Elliot Smith song and started researching what it was and how to incorporate it into his recording. The sound came from a ring modulator pedal. He searched online to buy one and soon discovered that he could purchase a kit to BUILD HIS OWN! He thought, “This is way better than model cars!” It was a beginner kit and fairly easy. The build was successful and within a month, Barao had bought and built four more kits. He already had soldering experience from small DIY projects he would do as a teenager, so that was a big help. His second pedal build was a tremolo because he always liked the sound of that effect and then he moved on to build a compressor. It took about four pedals to finally build one that didn’t work, which led him to seeking help from people who had more experience in the field. It was so much fun. It really put his record off track though. He would spend the next two years obsessed with building pedals for himself and learning through

online forums how pedal circuits work, instead of just following a diagram and piecing them together. Barao is grateful for all the kind people he met online who took the time to help him and explain the process. Barao’s hobby turned into a small business. On The Road Effects was born. Barao was building effects pedals for recording engineers to recreate perfect sounds with no noise. Good quality, handmade pedals with quality parts. Durable enough for stage and touring as well. Some well-known artists that use On The Road Effects pedals are Buddy Guy, Duke Robillard, Ducky Carlisle, and Judah Bauer, to name a few. Barao created the Ducky pedal for Grammy Award winning recording engineer, Ducky Carlisle. Carlisle was looking to recreate a specific sound that a piece of his vintage

equipment provided him for years, and was no longer able to function. After much research and trial and error, he sent the pedal to Ducky and he tested it. It was a winner! On The Road Effects pedals are as competitively priced as possible without losing money and are less expensive that typical “boutique pedals.” If a pedal is made with cheap components, it will create a lot of hiss and noise. These pedals are known for being high quality and clean sounding. Barao has built somewhere between 300 and 400 pedals so far and cannot really pick a favorite. He has favorites within categories though. He has a few favorite overdrives, a favorite compressor, etc. He can also do custom work. He can build almost anything analog as long as he can find a schematic for it. He can even combine several pedals into one. If you want a special color or graphic, he can quote you on that too. Barao’s mind is always going and he has some crazy projects lined up. Not only is he building a theremin from scratch, but he has teamed up with a friend who builds circuit boards, and they will be building a pedal that combines the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. There will also be a joystick that will allow users to blend the elements and sounds in any unique way they choose. The latest feature Barao is offering on his website is pedal building kits for intermediate users. You will

be able to build a pedal for yourself using the circuit boards that Barao, himself, has designed. You’ll be able to purchase and download the PDF instructions and do it yourself. “I’m optimistic that selling circuit boards to other builders will be a nice side avenue to bring in some more income,” Barao explained. By Jenn Lombari Since opening their doors in April of 2018, School of Rock: North Providence, the first Rhode Island location, has accomplished a multitude of feats and they’re only getting started. In the seven months they’ve been open, Owner Dave LaSalle, Manager Corinne Southern, and Music Director Chris Brunelle have grown very proud of the accomplishments of their numerous students. At School of Rock, the kids aren’t just learning how to play an instrument, they’re learning how to put on a professional rock show. Students of all skill levels receive private instruction, group band rehearsals, and breakouts to teach stage presence and vocal harmonies. In addition to experiencing the full production of a rock show, they are learning life skills, gaining confidence, and learning how to share ideas and work as a team. Over the past few months, School of Rock has put much effort into donating their time to community events. You may have seen School of Rock at “Art In The Park,” the Rhode Island Apple Festival, or at “National Night Out.” There were several performance workshops held at Camp Meehan, where they would set up summer camp classes to get kids involved in music. and the North Providence and Wanskuck libraries in support of the national “Libraries Rock” campaign. An event that they are very proud of and will continue to build upon is the “Open Mic Night” that was held on location at School of Rock

North Providence. Open to anyone under 18 years old, this experience provided kids an opportunity to showcase their talent without having to visit the typical open mic at a bar or other establishment. Many kids played covers, some wrote their own songs. There was a full professional stage set up with

drums, amplifiers, and a sound system with lights. Some performers were members of School of Rock who formed with bands outside of their program. LaSalle plans to organize more events like this to provide a venue for kids to showcase their enormous creativity and talent.

“Tune In & Tune Up” was an event held in October that School of Rock was happy to be a part of. It was both a health fair and unity concert. Affiliated with the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame, SOR students were able to perform at the event and meet some of the local musicians who have made a career

out of music. Some participants were John Cafferty, Steve Smith, and James Montgomery. Tune In & Tune Up also brought awareness about healthcare for musicians and encourages a healthy lifestyle for musicians at home or on the road, while stressing that musicians don’t have to live a reckless party lifestyle. This program teaches self-care and staying in a healthy mindset for musicians of all ages. School of Rock concerts are held at venues like Fete in Providence and The Met in Pawtucket. Every season, the students work toward one big concert at one of these venues. They’ve performed a Grunge concert and a British Invasion concert. Another large stage the students will be rocking this year is the 90th anniversary celebration of the Loew’s Theater Building at the Providence Performing Arts Center. In addition to the School of Rock Performance, The Voice alumni / country music star, Billy Gilman, will be performing. Looking toward the future, School of Rock has recently announced a collaboration with Atlantic Records Artist Partnership Group (APG). As the partnership launches, School of Rock will be advancing its songwriting, recording, and production curriculum. School of Rock students will have the opportunity to put forward original work and get constructive feedback. A select number of students will be chosen to travel to Los Angeles, work with APG and Atlantic executives, and present their work to industry professionals in a live showcase. Atlantic and APG will scout this top talent for further development as part of the Atlantic/APG family. This is a great opportunity for students to sharpen their songwriting skills and be put on the right path, while heading toward the right people. It will be a learning
