Disney Parks are Raising Prices Again
When Disney launched its new tool that lets visitors avoid long lines for rides last year, fans griped that they were being forced to pay for a perk they once got free. Now, most visitors will have to pay even more for the privilege. Cue a new round of complaints about “money grubbing” and “nickel and diming.” Disney’s parks in Florida and California rolled out new prices for the Genie Plus service, which allows guests to avoid lengthy waits. How much will the cost go up? That depends where you’re going and which day you’re visiting. At Walt Disney World in Florida, the world’s busiest theme park complex, the price used to be $15 regardless of the day. For now, the cost will vary between $15 and $22, depending on how busy the four parks are on a particular day. After this month? No one is saying. At Disneyland Resort in California, the cost of Genie Plus now starts at $25, according to its website. That’s up from $20. The Los Angeles Times reported that the price will be $25 when purchased with a ticket or package in advance but variable when visitors buy it after entering the park. Disneyland also increased the price of admission on its busiest days to $179. The L.A. Back in September, the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA), in partnership with the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce’s Women Business Council, hosted the latest installment of its Women in Hospitality series, at the Providence Marriott Downtown. With national and regional headlines frequently touting horror stories detailing physical altercations between our industry’s staff members (many of whom are women) and customers, which began to occur more often during the height of the pandemic, as public health and safety guidelines were shifting, RIHA developed a plan to educate, inform, and empower local women in hospitality to recognize the signs of danger and to defend themselves appropriately and effectively. To that end, RIHA brought in Lt. Michael Fallon and Detective Tracie Miller-Dygon from the Providence Police Department’s Training Division to the Providence Marriott Downtown’s ballroom to offer a Self-Defense Awareness Training covering defensive tactics, situational awareness and more, for a crowd of more than 100 women working in the hospitality industry. Detective Miller-Dygon demonstrated a number of valuable and effective self-defense techniques, which unfortunately Lt. Fallon was on the receiving end of. In addition, RIHA sent each seminar attendee home with a custom pepper spray keychain.
As part of the seminar and networking event, attendees contributed donations of men’s and women’s business attire for the East Providence, RI-based nonprofit Foster Forward, which aims to support children and youth, families, and the child welfare system, as a whole, to grow, connect, improve, and move forward, while also managing its Storefront, a resource for all foster families, who can pick up free, gently-used clothing, toys, and other essentials. With a number of successful Women in Hospitality events under their belt, RIHA will continue to encourage women in the industry to celebrate, support, and collaborate with one another more frequently. As they look toward planning more events, they would appreciate any feedback or input you might have. This grant will support Burton’s work being done by RI Elder Info to fulfill their mission to empower people throughout the aging journey by providing easy one-stop access to comprehensive information and resources. Some of the programs it will include, but are not limited to: Presentations on how to “Age Independently” given to community groups, religious organizations, libraries and housing authorities. The funds will be used to support RI Elder Info’s work in providing community events and educational outreach over the next year. Community-based programming, as well as RI Elder Info’s weekly live stream show, “Friday Friends,” provide information and resources that help older adults who need to know what resources are available so they can make informed choices on how best to remain independent. At the IDEA World session, about 150 of us sampled what it takes to get in shape for MMA--a world of kicks, punches, and takedowns, best illustrated in the popular Ultimate Fighting Championships events. Though few clients of personal trainers aspire to battle it out in the chain-link “Octagon” of a UFC competition, many may see the appeal of a high-intensity MMA workout. Training techniques for other sports can be used, as long as they fit with the sport-specific MMA approach. Next, I’ll explain the steps we go through to prepare fighters for a MMA match or to prepare you for the 887! Even if your clients have no interest in engaging in physical combat, they may still enjoy the idea that they’re getting themselves strong enough for a real fight. Fight camp is the specific amount of time between matches; ideally, it will get the combat athlete to peak conditioning just in time for the fight. It’s a serious commitment of time, generally between 3 and 6 months. After the fight, I recommend fighters take a week off to recover and then begin to prepare for the next bout. 28 Shop In RI
The prime goal of training is maintaining lean body mass because there is a direct correlation between strength and anaerobic capacity. This is a concept we all want. Conditioning coaches for MMA fighters also face challenges with recovery issues, injury prevention, overtraining, proper peaking, and off-season weight management. The conditioning coach’s job is to create an effective macro-cycle conditioning program, with three micro-cycles that help the combat athlete peak at fight time. The micro-cycle phases are: 1. Strength and hypertrophy 2. Explosive power 3. “Gas in the tank,” or sport-specific conditioning Let’s go through each of these phases: PHASE 1: STRENGTH AND HYPERTROPHY MMA fighters need to build a foundation and rebuild any injuries or muscle imbalances before they can move to the demanding later phases. We worked with 15 UFC fighters and found they need to spend a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks in the strength phase. Heavy strength training that increases muscle mass must happen in this phase; otherwise, the weight-cutting fighters have to do it in Phase 3, which will be much more difficult. This phase also establishes a baseline for core strength and overall strength of major muscle groups. Our program model for this phase: 1. Rotating muscle groups 2. Full-body 3. Multijoint 4. Multiplanar 5. 10 to 12 repetition goal 6. PRM formula (progressive resistance method) 7. 3 complete sets of all movements 8. Emphasis on functional movements STRENGTH AND HYPERTROPHY WORKOUT This full-body workout covers multiple joints in multiple angles. It’s to be done 3 days a week for a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks:
* Single-leg deadlift * Grind with Air Fit * Single-arm chest press on stability ball * Medicine ball twists * Medicine ball diagonal chops * Dumbbell uppercuts * BOSU plank to press-ups * Leg curls on stability ball * Reverse hyperextensions on a stability ball PHASE 2: EXPLOSIVE POWER Explosive exercises, such as plyometrics, have been around for years. Though studies have documented that plyometric training can improve muscular power, you need to be extra careful about the frequency and duration. The challenge with many of these exercises is the nature of the movement. Because they are ballistic, they can cause injuries if not properly coached. Also, consider the surface the athlete is training on--combat sports, in particular, have a high degree of impact and potential for injury. We found it extremely useful to implement equipment such as BOSUs, rubberized medicine balls, and fitness trampolines like the Jump Sport to gain all the benefits without the impact. We have found that plyometric training helps our UFC athletes if they do it after the strength phase. We also have found it improves the athlete’s proprioceptive awareness and decreases the risk of injury.

Because every athlete is different, some may need a few days of rest and others may need up to 10 days. The coaching team needs to work together and listen to the athlete during the tapering-off phase. Getting Specific The principle of specificity holds that the sports training must reflect the activity to generate the proper training effect. We based our MMA training on a work-to-rest ratio of about 2.2 to 1, though we have seen increased endurance in our athletes with a slightly higher work-torest ratio. We base this formula on the amount of “real time” in the cage or a fight, and many of the exercises in this workout resemble fight moves in the ring. The formula of 9 stations for 35 seconds of work, with 15 seconds rest and 1-minute break between each circuit of 9 worked effectively, giving fighters more endurance in the later rounds of a match. As I noted in the introduction, high caloric burn is another benefit of this stage. We have clocked the caloric burn at 475 calories in 17 minutes, with a UFC athlete wearing a heart rate monitor. It’s a very tricky business because you want the athlete to peak at the right moment, while being absolutely vigilant to avoid overtraining. Holiday Fitness Tips By: Susan Gazerro
Let’s face it, it’s assumed we are going to gain weight around the holidays. It’s assumed because it’s just part of the season. Yes, the holidays are a festive time with endless parties and dinners, but you do not have to be unhealthy and you do not have to gain weight. Find your focus and stay on track with my fitness tips: Plan your workouts. Make time for your workouts, just as you make time for each of your festive events. Make time, just like you do for holiday shopping. Make time, just like you do for wrapping gifts. Planning ahead by adding your workouts to your schedule ensures that they will fit into your day. Make it a priority when you wake up to go for a walk or run. Make it a priority to hit the gym. Your first action every morning should be something physical. Kick start your day by working out. You will find you have more energy for the rest of the day. Your schedule is probably fuller than normal because of all the festivities so you may need to break up your workout.

After awakening, you can do a 20 minute walk or run, or fit it in at lunch if the morning is busy. Stop at the gym at night for a 20 minute weight session or do resistance training at home before bed. Whatever you need to do to fit it in, do it. Shorter workouts a couple or few times a day are just as good as an hour or two all at once. If you’re planning on shopping all day, then dinner with family, and feel there just isn’t time, think about moving your body. Try not to stroll when shopping all day. Take a minute or two and do a power walk up and back at the shopping plaza. Park the car far enough away so you have to walk to the stores, then carry the bags back to your vehicle. You can even make several trips to your car to unload packages during the shopping day. The bottom line is keep moving your body. Every little bit counts! Take the stairs, not the elevator. No elevators from Halloween until after New Year’s. If you are at a mall, start in a store on the lower level, then take the stairs to the top level, then go back to a store on the lower level, and keep switching off until the shopping day is over.
Taking the stairs and walking all day will give you all the steps and exercise you need. I personally don’t like the cold weather, but I don’t let it stop me from going outdoors. As long as you dress accordingly, there are many ways to stay active in the winter. You can ski, snowboard, ice skate etc. You can also just bundle up and take a fast walk in the brisk, cold air. Every workout session or walk is better with a buddy. Even if it’s just for the holiday season, having a workout partner can help you stay motivated and accountable. You’re more likely to get to the gym if you have someone to workout with. Always reward yourself. Buy yourself some new workout clothes or something you’ve been wanting to buy, whether it’s a new pair of jeans or a jacket you’ve had your eye on. Winter can be depressing and less motivating for some, to workout. Find a reason and a purpose to get out of bed and workout or walk/run. Start a collection jar. For every workout you do, place a $1.00 in a jar, and at the end of the season, or better yet, before the summer starts, buy yourself something nice. Track your nutrition and activity throughout the day. Making a log of what you eat and drink holds you accountable. Trust me, this works. I’ve done this with a number of clients and its works. You realize how much and what you are putting in your mouth. You can also review it with a nutrition expert and find out what substitutions you can make to better benefit your specific needs. It also makes you stop and think, “Am I really hungry for this, or am I just eating because it’s here and I’m bored?” Make sure you drink plenty of water before any holiday gathering. This not only helps with staying hydrated, but it also helps you feel full so you’re more likely to resist the extra food. Maybe make yourself or buy a new decorated water bottle to inspire you to drink plenty of water during the holidays.
Staying healthy is not all that hard, even during the holidays. Just stay focused and follow some, if not all of my fitness tips. This also does not mean the holiday season won’t be fun and festive. I never deprive myself. I just moderate what I eat and drink. When you are aware and you control yourself, you actually feel so much better. You can absolutely have that Christmas cookie or festive drink, just don’t overdo it. When you walk away, not bloated, you feel so good. Working out during the season will leave you feeling more energized and ready to tackle all that the holidays bring. Enjoy the special day, but control yourself and stay disciplined all the other days!

Katie’s Fund for Kids
A mother’s campaign to help students and keep her daughter’s memory alive. By Mark Berger
It has been said that the greatest tragedy for a parent is outliving their child. There are no words to describe how to cope with such a loss or even make sense of what happened. For many, it changes their perspective on life. For others, it grows into an opportunity to do something to keep their loved one’s memory and purpose going. That is the case with Diane Vitalo, whose daughter, Kate Harrigan, succumbed to breast cancer in 2019, at the age of 41. After a previous bout and being clear for three years, the cancer returned as stage 4. When she passed away, Kate left behind her husband and two children, who were 13 and 10 at the time. As a first grade teacher in Warwick, Kate’s priority was providing a positive educational experience for her students. This included supplying them with classroom necessities, and on occasion, personal items for their home use. “After Kate passed away, some of her colleagues told me about how she helped many students with clothing, bedding and other necessities out of her own pocket,” Diane said. “This was in addition to money she spent at the beginning of the school year to set up her classroom. That is something all teachers do every year, because budgets have been cut and they don’t have everything they need to properly stock their classrooms. This is where we come in.” Those strong words and testimonials sparked Diane to begin a non-profit endeavor to continue her daughter’s work. Katie’s Fund for Kids is a 501(c) 3 and raises money through events and donations to help pay for essentials for kids in need, and for those important classroom necessities that provide teachers with the tools they need to work with the children. has purchased coats, clothing, pencils, pens, notebooks, periodicals, etc., in addition to general classroom items such as storage bins and lanyards, wipes and tissues. Katie’s Fund also helps with stocking the nurse’s offices. Their most requested item from nurses and teachers is underwear. Many children don’t have any at all, and the schools need to have it on hand for children who may have accidents. It also provides sweatpants and socks to enable a complete change of clothing in those situations. To date, most of the donations have gone to Warwick, West Warwick, and Coventry schools, and to St. Mary’s Home for Children in North Providence. Their hope is to expand the Fund’s reach beyond that area. How can you help? Check out “Katie’s Kitchen!” “Katie’s Kitchen” is a labor of love created by Diane with help from friends, family, and colleagues. It contains 280 favorite recipes for all occasions. There are also tried-and-true snacks for the family dog! The cookbook came about one day when Diane and Katie’s daughter Caroline were having lunch at Macy’s in New York City. Diane explained that she wanted to create this cookbook and needed Caroline’s artistic skills to help with the design. It took Caroline 10 minutes to design the cheerful cover and select the bee as the mascot. Bodhi Bee! Because bees and teachers ensure the survival of all of us. DON’T PAY FOR YOUR OWN MONEY. Stop paying convenience fees charged by many ATMs. Check with your bank to locate cash machines with no fees. Many grocery stores offer cash back options if you need a few bills in your wallet. AVOID LATE FEES. Pay your bills on time to avoid late fees. Enroll in automated payments whenever possible so you don’t have to worry about forgetting payment deadlines.

It’s no secret that many Americans are experiencing shrinking savings as high inflation persists. While many people have come to terms with rising costs, there are minor adjustments that can make a big difference to help reduce the sting on your finances. Here are some tactics to consider.
PARE BACK ON CONVENIENCE SERVICES. During the pandemic, many of us turned to convenience services that come at an extra cost. Did you get in the habit of takeout delivery from your favorite restaurants? Are you paying to have your groceries delivered? Are you shopping online and spending extra for shipping? You might be surprised by how you can save by running your own errands. CANCEL UNUSED SUBSCRIPTIONS & MEMBERSHIPS. Do you subscribe to multiple streaming services? Are you getting packages in the mail from box subscriptions that became popular during lockdown? Are you paying for one or more club memberships that you’re not using? Decide what you can live without, then cancel any that aren’t necessary and keep more dollars in your bank account each month.
LOOK FOR DEALS. Talk to your cell phone provider to review your plan. Shop around for better rates on home and auto insurance and bundle if it makes sense. Consider eliminating cable or satellite if you can get by with a cheaper entertainment alternative. Coupons, rebates, and thrifting are back in fashion.
POSTPONE BIG-TICKET PURCHASES. If your vehicle is still a good runner, and your appliances are working, put off plans to trade in for newer models. With prices surging, you’ll pay top dollar for inventory that is still scarce due to supply chain challenges. For financed purchases, higher interest rates will drive up your overall cost. STICK TO THE ESSENTIALS. If you can curtail indulgences for now, you’ll do your budget a favor. If you’re going to the store, make a shopping list to resist impulse buys. REVIEW YOUR HOUSING EXPENSE. You may not have much control over your monthly rent or mortgage payment, but you can address the extras. It may be time to let go of your covered parking space or the extra storage unit. Consider getting a roommate to share costs. Downsize if you can no longer afford your current living arrangement. There’s no way to know just how long this period of high inflation will last. Nevertheless, taking these steps can help you save money.

Natural disasters – from floods and wildfires to hurricanes, tornadoes and snowstorms – seem to be in the news all too frequently. As you watch or read stories about the challenges facing victims of the latest disaster, you might try to convince yourself that it will never happen to you.
PROTECT KEY DOCUMENTS
Nearly anyone, however, may be exposed to a natural disaster at some point. Keeping you and your family safe is the ultimate priority but so is mitigating the impact of financial loss. Taking steps to be financially prepared for such an occurrence can determine your readiness to handle a life-changing event. Here are some things to keep in mind to help you prepare.
Important documents should be stored in a safety deposit box at a bank. This includes birth and marriage certificates, Social Security cards, passports, and titles to your home and cars. In addition, if you have important household information stored on your computer, make certain it is backed up on a hard drive that is in a safe place. Keeping information on a safely stowed thumb drive that you can grab and keep with you in case of emergency may also be helpful.

MAINTAIN AN EMERGENCY FUND
There may be no more important step than to make sure you have appropriate insurance coverage that is current and up-to-date. This includes property and casualty insurance to protect your home, vehicles and other possessions. You’ll want to make sure your coverage is sufficient for the replacement value at today’s prices. If you believe you could be subject to a flood, you’ll need to look into a separate flood insurance policy provided through the National Flood Insurance Program. It’s important to note, most traditional homeowner policies do not cover flood damage.
Your sources of income may be interrupted, either by an inability to work due to injury, or because the business where you are employed may not be able to operate for a period of time. Be sure you have at least six months of living expenses set aside in a liquid, emergency fund (bank savings account or money market fund) to meet your expenses if you should be unable to work for an extended period of time.
Also make sure you have sufficient health insurance in place too should you require medical care following a disaster.
Natural disasters can be devastating in so many ways. While the above tips are some of the ways to financially prepare for a natural disaster, there may be additional actions you can take depending on the severity of the event and your individual circumstances. But remember: the more you can do in advance, the better prepared you will be.
CASH ON HAND It isn’t unusual for many of the services we take for granted to be out of commission if a natural disaster should strike the area where we live. For example, power may be out, which means ATMs will be unable to dispense cash. Internet and cell phone service could be limited as well, making it difficult to conduct any transactions online. One solution is to make sure you keep a reasonable amount of cash safely tucked away in your home so you have money that’s available to use when you need it. During times like these, most purchases may require cash. Be sure you’ve got sufficient cash on hand that would meet your needs for a few days if you have to contend with such a drastic circumstance.

Reba Golden of HomeSmart Thinks the Industry Isn’t Going to the Dogs. by Mark Berger
new perspective on what direction to take, but provide buyers with more reasons to want the home, Golden said. “Sellers should be thinking about the home from the outside in because the front yard will be the first thing they see,” said Golden. “The house could be beautiful inside. However, if they see tall grass, shoddy landscape and/or a cracked driveway, then they may be turned off. Approaching this from that perspective may do wonders for the property.” Meanwhile, buyers need to develop “a thick skin” because inventory is still extremely low. Because of that fact, many people are putting in offers, some well over asking price while others are closer to what the seller is requesting. Not every offer will come out as the winner. Understanding the market as Reba does helps, but she says that every rejection means the buyers are one step closer to finding their new home. Ask any realtor what the state of the market will be in a few months, and you may receive several vastlydifferent responses. That is because the market fluctuates so much that it can be hard keeping track. Just when houses were selling for far over the seller’s asking price, interest rates soared—driving down prices. The upcoming winter may see prices fall even further with interest rates slowly coming down.
What can possible buyers and sellers do to keep up with the changing trends and ensure that their investment will put its’ best face forward? Realtor Reba Golden of HomeSmart Professionals Real Estate in Warwick offers buyers and sellers based in Rhode Island with some thoughts to make this process a smooth one. For the seller, she suggests thinking about the staging from the mind of the buyer. Presentation can either make or break the purchase. So, looking fresh, modern, decluttered and depersonalized may bring in more people and attract more offers. Perhaps seeing things differently can not only offer a

She also strongly suggested buyers get pre-approved for a mortgage before looking. This gives them an idea of what they can afford. She said it makes little sense to looking at a house if you can’t put in an offer. Furthermore, most listing agents won’t show a house unless the buyers are pre-approved. “People shouldn’t take it personally if they don’t get the offer on the home. If they keep plugging, they will find their home,” she said. For both parties, it also means pricing the property correctly in the first place. Nobody wants to overpay for a property that they later discover has issues. Also, the seller does not receive points for having its property available for more than 30 days. Even 50 days can be a tell-tale sign it was priced too high, which mean reducing prices and answering additional questions. “I’ve already noticed some price reductions,” she said. Another thing keeping Reba grounded is volunteering. She spends a few hours weekly helping at the Hotel for Homeless Dogs in Cumberland. She donates her time to caring for dogs who do not have anywhere else
to go. It actually led to her getting one of the dogs getting adopted by a neighbor! She enjoys doing this because it helps with her overall health and well-being. It’s not just confined to her health, however. “I do it because dogs can’t speak for themselves. I can give them a voice and possibly play the role of matchmaker. It’s my way of giving back.”

Unfortunately, I also see properties going into short sales or even foreclosure.” “The holidays are honestly a good time to view homes,” she continues. “They are often decorated and people are often driving around. Never know who might be interested.”
Golden got into real estate in 2013 after being laidoff from her corporate job. She began watching housing shows on television and seeing what they had to offer. It took time and convincing by her now-hubby, but Reba took classes and earned her real estate license later that year. She worked for Keller Williams for several years before switching to HomeSmart because HomeSmart’s Smithfield office was closer to home.

Ask An Expert How to get rid of Nicotine Stains

Have you ever taken a picture off someone’s wall (perhaps even your own) and there was an outline of where the picture stood, which almost made it look like the picture was still on the wall? Although this scenario could be stemming from a variety of different reasons, one very challenging situation to correct is if the staining around the picture was caused by nicotine. Other ways that this type of thing could have happened would be caused by prolonged burning of certain types of candles, a “puff back” from the heating system, or even soot related to a fireplace somehow making its way through the living space. Nicotine, however, may just be the most stubborn of them all. Regardless of how one feels about someone smoking in the house, this type of nicotine staining is quite the problem. What often happens is comparable to the morbid myth, which is heard on occasion of boiling a frog by placing it on a stove in a cooler pot of water, turning up the heat, bringing the water to a boil, and having the frog’s “goose” cooked before they had a chance to realize it. As grotesque an analogy that this may be, the principle holds VERY true for those who allow smoking in their home, where, over time, the nicotine staining builds up on the walls undetected, until one day when someone takes that picture off the wall and it hits them as to what the condition of their walls have transpired to. Once the nicotine staining is recognized, the question of how to fix the situation may soon follow. If the nicotine staining is not properly addressed, it will bleed through the coats of paint that are put on top of it and one will be chasing their tail infinitely attempting to stop the staining from bleeding through. The funny thing about this situation is someone may live for decades without discovering this that is occurring all around them, but then once they are aware of it, getting rid of the nicotine staining could all of a sudden become an obsession. Nicotine will seep into the walls and its omnipresence (once identified) may seem like an immovable object, unless it is properly addressed. Once the nicotine staining has been revealed, and assuming the person finding it wants to actually get rid of it, what is the correct approach? Over the years, we have worked through quite a number of these types of circumstances, and we do have a methodology we utilize, which I believe works best.
It is important when aiming at neutralizing the nicotine that ALL painted surfaces are properly hit, otherwise, it is going to be obvious as to the existence of nicotine staining on the painted surfaces that were not treated, abutting any surfaces that were treated. Coating everything being painted with at least one coat (possibly two in the most severe situations) of an alcohol-based shellac (our “go-to” is a product called ‘BIN”) is the critical component. If things are simply gone over with what promises to be a stain-blocking oil or latex-based primer, you may be setting yourself up for some grave disappointment. Once the proper coating(s) of alcohol-based shellac is applied, then you can hit the areas with a coat of latex primer and then your desired finished coat product(s). This will assure that nasty nicotine stains do not push their way through fresh paint coatings and add to an already frustrating situation. Again, the key is the alcohol-based shellac. Once this treatment is properly executed, you will be rid of the nicotine staining forever…unless, of course, you believe allowing smoking in the house moving forward is something you are ok with, then the fresh paint job will be simply a “reset” until the nicotine staining builds up again

Following the feast, with bellies beyond full, the men retire to the couches, with their heads bobbing back and forth as they try with diligence to keep their eyes open. In between their catnaps, we inevitably hear playful outbursts as they enjoy the pastime of watching the historic playing of college football games. The ladies sit around the kitchen and chat about another year of their favorite subject, Christmas shopping, as they set a plan to tackle the best sales, either on the night of Thanksgiving or the next day on ‘Black Friday.’ Once the dishes are cleared, the last touchdown is thrown and the clock runs out, and the leftovers are divied up, it’s a sign of another Thanksgiving of unforgettable memories for the entire family. So this describes a somewhat typical American Thanksgiving experience, but how exactly do other countries celebrate Thanksgiving? Here are some notable countries that celebrate Thanksgiving, with traditions of their own…
Australia - Norfolk Island
Celebrating Thanksgiving in America and Around the World
Norfolk Island is an Australian territory in the Pacific between Australia and New Zealand. The Island’s celebration supposedly originates from American whalers, who commonly visited the island. They celebrate their Thanksgiving on the last Wednesday of November and feature dishes made from bananas.

Brazil
Thanksgiving is thought of as an American holiday,
but are there any other countries that follow the same American traditions? Primarily, Americans celebrate with a huge feast, with “Tom” as the centerpiece, along family traditions, including vocalizing appreciation and showing gratitude for all of their blessings of the previous year. As you will learn, other nations also celebrate with food, but an emphasis on religion is more prevalent, along with honoring specific events. Many Americans, including my own family, look forward to the morning of Thanksgiving, when we gather around the big screen to watch New York City’s Macy’s Thanksgiving parade, as we “ooh” and “aah” at the sight of the giant balloons and epic sized floats. The parade is something that is enjoyed, particularly by the kiddies, who anxiously await the arrival of Santa, who for them, is the parade’s main event. Seeing the chubby man in the red suit is for sure the official start of the holiday season, and our hearts are warmed with the approach of the most joyous time of year. For many Americans, Thanksgiving dinner includes turkey, bread stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. Those in my family also prepare family favorites of endless Italian inspired dishes, such as antipasto, escarole soup with tiny meatballs, lasagna, and countless desserts.

Brazil also celebrates their Thanksgiving holiday on the same day that Americans do. The holiday is called Dia de Ação de Graças, and apparently, many of its festivities were inspired by American traditions. Brazil’s Thanksgiving also has a religious element to it, whereas Thanksgiving in the States is specifically a nondenominational holiday.
Dia de Ação de Graças begins with a church service in the morning,
where churchgoers give thanks for the upcoming autumn harvest season. After that, a carnival ensues for the rest of the day. Brazilians eat pretty much the same Thanksgiving Day foods that Americans eat, except they elect to replace cranberry sauce with jabuticaba, a grapetree fruit sauce.
Canada
Canada pre-dates America in its acknowledgment of Thanksgiving, as it dates back to 1578. It is celebrated on the second Monday of October. Their Thanksgiving feast resembles what we eat in the U.S.: turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, etc., but all in all, the Canadians’ Thanksgiving is not much of a big deal as it is in our country.
China
China’s Thanksgiving is a fall harvest celebration known as the “Chung Chiu” Moon Festival. Over this three day celebration, they eat mooncakes, watch the full moon (the holiday occurs based on the lunar cycle), and recite poetry. China’s moon festival is a 2.500 year tradition.
Germany
Thanksgiving in Germany is known as Erntedankfest and is a fall harvest celebration of gratitude. It is more of a religious holiday in Germany and usually involves attending church. Because it has religious elements, Erntedank is often sponsored by both Christian and Protestant churches.
The celebrations often begin with a church service for both the larger and smaller cities. In cities, the service is followed by a parade and the presentation of the “harvest crown,” or Erntekrone, to a designated Harvest Queen. Churchgoers distribute leftover or surplus food to the poor. There are multiple church services throughout the day, and in the evening laternenumzüge or “lantern parades” are organized.
Japan
Japan’s Thanksgiving is known as Kinrō Kansha no Hi and is celebrated on November 23rd. It is a tradition over 2,000 years old and has its roots in the celebration of the fall rice harvest. Not all Japanese citizens are guaranteed to have a day off work for the holiday, unlike Americans. But all government entities in Japan are closed on this day in celebration of the country’s industrial workers and progress. Coinciding with the Nagano Labour Festival is the Nagano Ebisuko Fireworks Festival, which is regarded as one of the most stunning fireworks displays in the Japanese calendar year. Over 400,000 people gather to watch the fireworks each year and combine the festivities of the two holidays into one big celebration.
Liberia
As in America, Thanksgiving in Liberia is celebrated on the first Thursday of November each year. It is also almost identical to the United States’ version of Thanksgiving — aside from the day it’s celebrated. Of course, Liberians put their own spin on the American traditions. Families get together and eat dinner consisting of chicken, green bean casserole, and mashed cassa-
vas, which are a vegetable similar to potatoes. But Liberians like their food to be spicy, so different seasonings are added to give their dishes a kick.
Netherlands - in one specific city…
Thanksgiving is celebrated in the city of Leiden in the Netherlands. The connection to Leiden is that in order to escape the religious persecutions in England, some of the Pilgrims called Leiden home from 1609 to 1620. The Pilgrims sheltering in Leiden traveled on a ship called Speedway to England, where they met up with other Pilgrims and traveled to America. Due to this connection, Thanksgiving is celebrated in Leiden.
South Korea
Korea’s Thanksgiving is known as Chuseok and is celebrated on the same day as the Chinese Thanksgiving. Similar to China, the holiday celebrates the first full harvest moon. Koreans give each other gifts on Chuseok, which often consist of meats, fruits, and vegetables. What’s interesting and quite comical is that SPAM (yes, SPAM) is popular in South Korea and is a common gift. Families also come together on the night before Chuseok to make songpyeon as a bonding activity. Making the rice cakes together illustrates the importance of family in Korean culture.
Vietnam
Like Korea and China, Vietnam’s Thanksgiving is held on the first day of the full harvest moon. Vietnam’s Thanksgiving is known as Têt-Trung-Thu Festival, which roughly translates into “the Children’s Festival.” It is called that because it is “held as a way for parents, once busy with the harvest, to make amends with their children who may have felt neglected.” Shop In RI 77
