$18K Permit Stands Between Man and $130M Treasure

It’s known as the Holy Grail of pirate treasure - a haul of gold, silver, and jewels worth an estimated $130 millionand John Cruise-Wilkins says he knows where it is. So why is the man not yet swimming in diamonds and rubies? Well, getting to the treasure is not so easy, Cruise-Wilkins tells the BBC’s Helen Soteriou, who visited the “Treasure Man” on Mahe’s northern coast in the Seychelles. Here, according to Cruise-Wilkins, the French pirate Olivier Levasseur stowed the treasure he’d stolen from a Portuguese ship in the port of Bourbon Island, now La Reunion, in 1721. Afterwards, according to legend, he executed the crew members who’d helped him hide it.

But after Levasseur was captured in 1730, he is said to have given up a sort of treasure map: 17 lines of symbols written on a piece of parchment that he thrust into the air moments before he was hanged. Cruise-Wilkins, who inherited the quest for the treasure from his father, says his years studying the parchment (reportedly verified by the British Museum as from the 1700s) have led him to a cavern, only accessible by an underwater tunnel, on government land. To dig there, Cruise-Wilkins needs to pay $18,000 for a permit. Even then, any treasure he finds must be split with the government. Financing is an issue but the price is worth it, “not just to prove my father right but … to beat the pirate at his own game,” he told the Seychelles News Agency last year. “I have found the mental treasure,” he adds. “It is only the physical that now remains.”

Guy Dragged From Plane Settles With United

A Kentucky doctor who was dragged off a United flight after he refused to give up his seat to crew members has reached a settlement with the airline for an undisclosed amount, the AP reports. David Dao’s legal team announced the settlemen in a briefstatement.

The agreement includes a provision that the amount will remain confidential. Cellphone video of the April 9 confrontation aboard a jetliner at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport sparked widespread public outrage over the treatment of Dao. The footage showed airport police officers pulling the 69-year-old father of five from his seat and dragging him down the aisle. His lawyer says he lost teeth and suffered a broken nose and a concussion. (United announced big changes in the wake of the controversy.)

A happy day for historians and conspiracy theorists could be right around the corner. A 1992 law mandated that all materials related to President John F. Kennedy’s assassination be maintained in a single collection—and that those documents that had been kept secret be released 25 years later. That would put the files squarely in public hands

by Oct. 26, reports Politico - assuming President Trump doesn’t intervene. Researchers at the National Archives are already preparing an estimated 3,600 files for public viewing, along with 35,000 other assassination-related documents previously released in part, and say they could actually begin unsealing some this summer. Only the president has the right to “justifiably close” any of the records due to be opened.

A large number of the “missing” documents were filed by CIA officials who tracked Lee Harvey Oswald’s 1963 visit to Mexico City. Politico gives context: “Historians agree that the trip, which Oswald apparently undertook in hopes of obtaining a visa to defect to Castro’s Cuba ... has never been fully investigated.” Those files had been kept secret for fear they would damage US-Mexico relations, and while the chair of the agency that handled the documents says he knew of no “bombshells,” he “wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something important” in them. A White House official simply says the Trump administration is working with the National Archives “to enable a smooth process in anticipation of the October deadline.”

Alaska: the Land Where Blockbuster Survived

The manager of a successful Blockbuster Video outlet has given an interview to CBS News and they didn’t have to take a time machine back to 1997 to speak to him. Kevin Daymude runs a Blockbuster outlet in Anchorage, which is one of several locations in Alaska that survived after the parent company closed its last few hundred outlets in 2013.

“I can’t tell you how many business cards I’ve given out to people ‘cause

they literally do not believe that I’m from Blockbuster,” says Daymude, who has been with Blockbuster since the days of VHS. “I feel like a lot of the customers just want to come in and feel like they’re someone special,” he says. “They love the customer service, they love the interaction.”

Alan Payne, who owns nine of the last 12 Blockbusters in the country with majority in Alaska is proud to keep the name going.. There used to be more than 9,000 across the country.

End of Summer Lobster Roll Guide

According to the “Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink”, the lobster roll originated as a hot dish at a restaurant named Perry’s in Milford, Connecticut, as early as 1929. Its popularity then spread up and down the Connecticut coast, but not far beyond. In Connecticut, the sandwich served warm is a “lobster roll”, cold is a “lobster salad roll”.

As far back as 1970, chopped lobster meat heated in drawn butter was served on a hot dog bun at road side stands such as Red’s Eats in Maine. Lobster rolls in the U.S. are associated with the state of Maine, due to its cold waters and extensive fishing industry, but are also commonly available at seafood restaurants in the other New England states, including Eastern Long Island, and Rhode Island where lobster fishing is common.

The summer months in Rhode Island are the most popular time of the year to enjoy and experience the state’s best lobster rolls. However, there are some restaurants across the state that offer this sandwich throughout the year.

MY TANDOORI CHICKEN ADVENTURE Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails

I love different food from all over the world, but I'm pretty clueless about Indian cuisine.

Recently, I spotted a recipe that looked like something I could handle for my first time around. It uses the traditional 2-step tandoori process of marinating; first, with the spices, and then with yogurt for tenderizing.

This recipe requires marinating for a full 24 hours; so plan ahead!

5 garlic cloves, chopped One 2-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and chopped Juice and zest of 1 lemon 1 tablespoon ground coriander

In a food processor or blender, combine the garlic, ginger, lemon, coriander, turmeric, cayenne, vegetable oil, 2 teaspoons of salt, and 1 teaspoon of pepper. Blend until smooth.

Place the chicken pieces in a large Ziploc bag and add the marinade, mixing well so that every bit of the chicken gets coated with the spices. Place the Ziploc in the fridge and marinate the chicken for 12 hours.

1 tablespoon ground turmeric

After 12 hours, add the yogurt to the bag, mixing well, and return it to the fridge for another 12 hours.

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Pre-heat the oven to 325 degrees. Set a rack over a rimmed baking sheet and set aside.

2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus more for frying (I like to use avocado oil mixed with a little pork lard)

In a bowl, combine the chickpea o r and teaspoon o salt.

Meanwhile, in a large heavy saucepan, heat about 2" of the oil until it reaches 325 degrees on a thermometer.

2 teaspoons Kosher salt, plus 1 teaspoon for later 1 teaspoon pepper

When the oil reaches the right temperature, take the pieces of chicken out of the bag one b one, letting the e cess drip o back into the bag be ore dredging the chicken in the o r. hake o the e cess, and care ll place the chicken pieces in the hot oil, working in batches.

Don't overcrowd the pan.

Once all of the chicken has been fried, place the baking sheet in the oven and cook the chicken until each piece registers at about 160 degrees.

Place the chicken on a plate, then garnish with cilantro leaves and lime wedges.

Harvest Kitchen The up-and-coming landscape of Downtown Pawtucket welcomes a fresh face to its community. The Harvest Kitchen Corner Store & Cafe is offering fresh, locally sourced alternative fare in their beautiful, sunny location at 2 Bayley Street. You can stop in and start your day with a coffee and some baked goods to-go, or stay awhile and enjoy the warm, inviting atmosphere. While there, you can also choose from a variety of fresh, locally sourced produce for home cooking, or healthy prepared meals for lunch or dinner. Throughout the year, the store will also offer cooking demonstrations related to healthy shopping, cooking and eating.

The Harvest Kitchen project is a collaborative effort between Farm Fresh Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Department of Children Youth and Families (DCYF). And, for the past seven years, Harvest Kitchen has operated as a culinary job training program for youth ages 16-19 of whom are referred by the DCYF Office of Juvenile Probation and the staff from the Rhode Island Training School. In addition to learning fundamental culinary skills, the adolescents learn how to preserve local produce in production of a signature line of jarred products.

The goal of the program is to support youth in transition from juvenile detention into the workforce and to teach them work readiness and transferable life skills. This program also educates these young persons about important communication skills, ways to build self-confidence and become self-reliant young adults. (ServSafe), and spend the last five weeks participating in a supported offsite internship. Many go on to land permanent positions in the job market.

Since 2010, they’ve worked with 13 groups and graduated over 90 youth trainees. Over 77% made educational progress while at Harvest Kitchen, measured by high school or GED degrees; 65% were placed in internships; and more than half successfully gained employment after completion.

Graduation from Harvest Kitchen has also reduced the rate of reoffense by half, with just over 30% of program participants re-offending within three years of program completion.

Over the past seven years, the Harvest Kitchen project has assisted youth in transition to young adulthood, while assisting local Rhode Island farmers with reducing food waste. Harvest Kitchen’s signature product line of preserved produce utilizes what farmers call “B-Grade produce”; fresh and delicious produce with

small imperfections that make it hard to sell at Farmer’s Markets and grocery stores. This produce is sold to Harvest Kitchen through Farm Fresh Rhode Island’s Market Mobile Program, a food hub that helps farmers distribute large quantities of goods directly to restaurants, grocers and individuals.

Currently, Harvest Kitchen works with over 15 farms in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, including Schartner Farms, Appleland, Steere Orchard, Leach Farm and Orchard, PV Farmstand, and Four Town Farm. Youth in training with Harvest Kitchen assist in producing a line of products that include, but are not limited to: Applesauce (Original, Strawberry & Cranberry), Stewed Tomatoes, Dill Pickles, Spicy Pickled Carrots, Dilly Beans, Bread & Butter Zucchini Pickles, Sweet Onion Relish, Zucchini & Apple Chips, and Zucchini Bread. These items are available seasonally at the Corner Store and FFRI Market Mobile.

This year, the Harvest Kitchen Corner Store & Cafe introduces more opportunity to work with local farmers and community groups as they settle into their new location at 2 Bayley Street. Their new

home is supported in part by the Department of Health, recognizing the potential of Harvest Kitchen to offer fresh, healthy food options in downtown Pawtucket. All cold, prepared food items are SNAP/ EBT eligible. While they await their certification to accept these benefits, their space is offering a diversity of seasonal food options, and welcoming feedback from the neighborhood. Harvest Kitchen Corner Store offers fresh baked goods, prepared meals, fresh local produce, and other staple grocery items. The store is currently open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 6:30pm, and Saturday from 9am to 3pm.

PUB On the lower level of Tumblesalts is the Pub. This open room is casual yet elegant and is complete with a full bar, three flat screen televisions, high top and low table seating, soft lighting, and an overall welcoming feel. ADIRONDACK OUTDOOR LOUNGE Just outside the Pub is the casual Adirondack Lounge. Here is where you will enjoy some Marco’s Nachos, Tumble’s Veggie Rolls, Fiery Chicken Cluckers complete with hot sauce, or maybe the Tower of Pisa which is made up of Italian meats, mixed olives, artichokes, red peppers, asparagus, nuts, fig jam, and more, while sitting back in a comfortable Adirondack chair and listening to soft music. Yes, you can order an appetizer, a drink, have a cigar, or enjoy all three.

Complete with Adirondack chairs and grey slate flooring, this is another area to just let the stress of the day melt away.

CAFE One level up from the pub is the Cafe. The beautiful cafe focuses on breakfast and lunch. This is one of my favorite rooms due to the exquisite lighting, white table cloths, beautiful walls, and large cushion booths that make it all so inviting. As for its menu in the Café, Tumblesalts “rise and shine” breakfast includes an assortment of egg dishes and egg omelets, waffles, french toast, and much more. There is also a children’s menu, “Little Tumblets”, for children under 12.

The lunch menu has everything from the Pub appetizers to salads, soups, flatbreads, wraps, sandwiches, subs, and burgers. They also offer daily lunch specials.

PATIO LOUNGE DINING The same menu that is offered in the elegant Tavern is offered here. You can choose a meal from the cafe menu or the Tavern menu, including mouthwatering dishes, including a flat iron steak, filet mignon, steak tips, and even seafood. The ambiance draws you in. Relax as you enjoy the colorful scenery, to the wicker seating and oak tables, to a beautiful fountain that will relax your state of mind. You will also enjoy listening to soothing music while you sip on your cocktail. The Patio Lounge is just another one of the eight escapes found within Tumblesalts.

TAVERN This elegant, intimate room takes one to another place. Starting with the comfortable seating and white table cloths, this fine dining experience will leave you breathless. The chandeliers, the beautiful fireplace, and the arch windows create a state of awe. Then you have the Tavern menu. Everything from a 14oz. Delmonico steak, accompanied with a gorganzola cream demi sauce, to Frutti di Mare, which consists of shrimp, sea scallops, little neck clams and calamari rings, tossed in a satisfying linguine.

ROOF TOP BOAT HOUSE I call this the “fun” room because it is so unique. You get the feeling that you are on a cruise ship. Character is the best way to describe the Roof Top Boat House. Mahogany bar stools, flat screen televisions, full bar, and the garage door give it character. Yes, garage door. This large door, when the weather allows, opens up to Roof Top Dining, Al Fresco. This is probably the most laid back, casual room at Tumble-

salts, giving the feeling of being at sea. In this room, enjoy any item from any of the Tumblesalts menus.

ROOF TOP DINING . . . AL FRESCO Roof Top Dining, Al Fresco becomes one with the Roof Top Boat House when the garage door is open. Although you feel as though you’re at sea when you are on one side of the garage door, this side is quite different.

The grey tile flooring, the wicker chairs, the square wood tables, and the black fencing make you feel as though you’re in a doll house. This is definitely one of the cozier areas at Tumblesalts. I love the Roof Top Dining because of the access to the full menu; while dressing as casual as you desire.

ROOF TOP LOUNGE The Roof Top Lounge offers appetizers and specialty drinks. This is probably as casual and as comfortable as it gets. The Roof Top Lounge is one of those areas you might come to just sit, have a beverage, and take it all in while you are waiting for a table. Although you can order food just about anywhere at Tumblesalts, this is probably the area where you would come to chat with friends, have an appetizer, and make plans for the night, while in a relaxing atmosphere.

Sweet Berry Farm…Middletown, RI Rhode Island peaches are at their peak and there is no better place to find them than at Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown.

Sweet Berry Farm, located at 915 Mitchell’s Lane in Middletown, is owned by Jan Paul and Michelle Eckhart and is comprised of approximately 100 acres. In 1980, they started as a hobby farm growing just a few acres of strawberries and Christmas trees. At the time, they maintained full time jobs in their fields of expertise (which was not farming); Jan with his Master’s in Business was working as a real estate developer and running several restaurants in Newport. Prior to the birth of Sweet Berry Farm, the Eckharts joined a few local farmers markets, began adding other crops to their repertoire and in 1996, as they became more and more passionate about growing, and with the help of Aquidneck Land Trust, purchased more land, and their dream of Sweet Berry Farm became a reality. They wanted to grow everything they possibly could; had so many successes but infinitely more failures. They learned many valuable lessons which have resulted in what they are today-a full fledged farm with more than a hundred types

of seasonal produce.

The peach is one of summertime’s classic fruits. At Sweet Berry Farm, its peak season runs from July through October. This is the time when you can take your entire family to the farm, navigating the peach orchards and picking those perfect peaches to take home and create a delicious sweet treat.

Throughout the summer months, the peach can be found in a variety of recipes, from peach pie to peach salad, and of course, the ever popular peach cobbler; its sweet flavor and versatility is no doubt responsible for why it is such a special and favorite treat. Use fresh picked peaches for the following recipe:

Ingredients • 6 tablespoons tapioca • 6 -7 cups fresh peaches, sliced (or equivalent canned peaches) • 1 cup sugar (omit if using sweetened canned peaches)

Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. 1. In a mixing bowl, combine tapioca, peaches, sugar (if used), cinnamon and nutmeg.

9. (Do Not Stir.) Bake for 1 hour and 20 minutes or until knife inserted comes out clean and top has a golden crust.

7. Peaches are nutritious as they contain 3 grams of fiber and a healthy amount of vitamins A and C.

Cobbler Topping • 1 ½ cups sugar • 2 tablespoons cornstarch • cinnamon, to taste • nutmeg, to taste • ½ cup boiling water

9. The world’s biggest peach cobbler is made in Georgia, it measures 11 feet by 5 feet.

10. When ripe, the peach should be slightly soft to the touch and have an even coloring.

2017 St. George Maronite Catholic Church Lebanese Food Festival Joseph P. Checrallah, Jr. St. George Maronite Catholic Church will be hosting its 4th Annual Lebanese Food Festival from Friday, Sept. 15th, thru Sunday, Sept.

17th, 2017, at its home in Cranston, RI. The Parish will host a fun-filled weekend with traditional Lebanese dance performances, children’s games, raffles, and a large selection of delectable Middle Eastern foods, pastries, and assorted beers, wines, and liquors.

St. George, a tightly-knit Maronite Catholic community under the authority of the Pope, dates back to the turn of the century in a period when there was an influx of Lebanese emigrants, who settled mainly in the Federal Hill area of Providence, RI. Their original church, a threestory converted house at 85 America Street in Providence, was home until November 1977, when the growing community moved to a larger church in Pawtucket, their home for 28 years, led by Reverend Paul F. Mouawad.

In October 2005, the Pawtucket

church was stricken with devastation as a fire raced quickly through the building. The entire facility was ruined beyond repair, requiring a crane to completely demolish the remains the very next day. The parishioners were left devastated and without a spiritual home to worship and serve as the center of their treasured Lebanese community activities.

Within a few weeks of the tragedy, the parish of St. Raymond’s Church in Providence graciously opened their doors to embrace the St. George community. And for over eight years the parishes shared a place of worship.

In July 2006, Father Edward T. Nedder was assigned to serve as Pastor. His primary mission was to restore the faith of his congregation and to establish a new permanent home for the parishioners. A building committee was formed, with a mission to find the perfect site. In May 2007, a house residing on 8+ acres of land in Lincoln, RI was purchased to be the site of the future church, hall, and rectory of Saint George.

While Father Ed quickly earned the respect and admiration of his new

Parish with his enthusiasm, inspiration, and unlimited energy, it became evident that building a new Church would be too costly and beyond the reach of the Parish. The effort transitioned into purchase mode, and he then led the effort to investigate every lead where a local Church was thought to be going up for sale.

On June 30, 2013, the Maronite Catholic Dioceses of Brooklyn, NY purchased the Church and Rectory of St. Ann’s Parish in Cranston, RI from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence to become the new home of St. George Maronite Catholic Church. The first Maronite Liturgy was celebrated on July 6, 2013. Father Ed continues to celebrate additional weekly Roman Catholic Masses for the Parishioners of St. Ann, and extends a warm welcome to all.

In September of 2014, St. George welcomed the neighborhood to its first Lebanese Food Festival, offering authentic Middle Eastern Food, Pastries, Music, Entertainment, Wine, and Beer.

Char-Broiled aromas filled the air as the festival organizers presented a taste of Lebanon with traditional Lebanese foods: Shish Kabob (Marinated Beef and Vegetables); Shish Tawook (Marinated Chicken and Vegetables); Kibbee (a mixture of meat, bulgur (cracked wheat), onions and traditional Lebanese spices) Kafta (grilled ground meat, with onions, parsley, and a variety of traditional spices); Warak Enab (stuffed grape leaves); Hummus (a creamy blend of chickpeas, garlic and olive oil); Baba Ghanouj (Roasted blended Eggplant mixed with spices); Tabouli (a blend of chopped parsley, tomato, scallions, lemon juice, olive oil, and spices); Chicken and Beef Shawarma wraps; Thoum (Garlic Spread); and Falafel (a mixture of mashed chick peas and Middle Eastern spices deep fried to golden perfection). Also featured are authentic pastries: Maamoul (fruit and date filled cookies); and the Lebanese version of Baklava, called B’learwa, along with other homemade Lebanese treats and authentic Lebanese Coffee.

In addition to the delicious food, the weekend festivities feature live Arabic music with a welcoming dance floor, and a partitioned Adult Bar Area, offering authentic Middle Eastern Beers, Wine, and Liquors. There is a separate supervised Children’s Area, with a Bounce House, Face Painting, and an Ice Cream Bar serving popsicles and many

assorted novelties, all staffed by proud volunteer parishioners.

This year, there will be three cash raffles - $250, $500, and $1000, and one for a 256GB Apple iPad Pro. All tickets are $10.00, and winners do not have to be present.

STYLEWEEK RETURNS With season 13 to the RI Convention Center By: Sarah Wessel STYLEWEEK Northeast, New England’s premier fashion week, will be returning on September 20th-23rd, 2017 with a new venue and new designers.

The Rhode Island Convention Center, located in the heart of downtown Providence, will be the new home for the 2017/2018 fashion shows. The West Lobby, specifically, will be transformed for the event to reflect the refined brand image of STYLEWEEK Northeast, as it will be a mecca for all things fashion. The venue will also be providing fun food, cocktails, and other beverages for purchase each night during the shows.

STYLEWEEK Northeast has also added to its impressive repertoire of sponsors. Alterna Haircare has signed on to be the official hair system for the event, and will be providing all products for styling. The Drip Bar is the presenting sponsor for the Lounge and Cocktail area and will be providing onsite mini vitamin Infusions to attendees during the event. The exotic leather goods brand, PIPER & SKYE, will be the primary Runway Room sponsor. Along with the new premiere sponsors; SWNE will also be welcoming back their valued veteran sponsors.

A panel of industry professionals will judge the five student designers that were chosen to showcase and partake in the runway show. The winner will receive $1,000, in which the young professionals can put towards their education or career.

Attendees will be able to shop various vendor booths that will be set up in the Drip Bar Lounge-Accessory Showcase, which will be located inside of the venue and will be open every night. Among the vendors include Flaunt Boutique, Kent Stetson, Jacqueline Lapuck and Wild World of AK. In honor of STYLEWEEK Northeast, the talented Kent Stetson has designed clutches that encompass the SWNE brand and features the logo in both white and black styles.

Change Your Bad Habits!

How about all of those cookouts and barbecues?! I’m sure July was filled with a ton of them. I bet you’re asking yourself a lot of questions. What can I eat so as not to overindulge? What should I bring that is healthy next time? Well, we must change our habits and make it a lifestyle change! Personally, I would bring turkey burgers to a cookout. When you arrive, choose the salad over the chips and salsa; and continue to do so out of habit.

See, there is a difference between habit and need.

You do not NEED the chips and salsa. You may want to have the salad over the chips because you’ve made this a lifestyle change, which then turns into habit.

I have been eating clean for twelve years now and everything I do is out of habit. When I say eating clean, I mean healthy, real, whole foods. I always eat fresh and never frozen so that I can get the best possible nutrients.

The common misconception is that people must eat bland, boring foods in order to live a healthy lifestyle.

This is completely untrue! I enjoy the same food as the next person; but, I prepare it in a cleaner fashion.

For example, chicken parmesan can be baked instead of fried. Pasta can be brown rice pasta; and veggies do not have to be smothered in butter. Again, this is a habit. This will gradually turn into a healthy lifestyle change and it’s something for which your future body will thank you.

So, I challenge you to change your lifestyle, change your habits, and in turn, you will change your body!

Who wouldn’t want to feel more energized, well rested, and happier throughout the day? It all starts with the types of foodyou put into your body!

Returning to Work After a Hair Transplant The decision to go back to work following a hair transplant surgery depends on how self-conscious a patient may feel about co-workers knowing that he or she had this procedure. One of the first questions patients ask about during their hair loss consultation is when they can go back to work.

Returning to work after a hair transplant can vary with each patient and the harvesting technique used.

With the traditional strip harvesting technique, if you are able to wear a hat to your job, then good news, you COULD return to work the next day.

However, if you are not able to wear a hat to work and prefer not to have co-workers know that you had a hair transplant, we recommend being off work 4-10 days, depending on your skin type and how fast your skin heals.

If you are considering the FUE

As we all know, lots of people make that New Year’s resolution to lose weight, join a gym, and to get in shape. Well, come February, more than half of those people have given up.

It sounds good, but when it comes to seriously making the commitment, people just can’t seem to stick with it. This is where I preach, it is not only about losing weight, it’s about being healthy.

If you’ve already derailed, it’s okay; there’s still a track and another train coming. What I’m saying is that it’s a new day.

Everyday you wake up is a new day to start again. You can do it! I cannot express how much better you will feel when you make exercise a part of your daily routine, a part of your lifestyle, 40 ShopInRI

and a part of who you are. You don’t just feel better physically, you also feel better mentally.

It’s just like when you feel good in an outfit, or your hair looks good, or on a day when everything is going well and in your favor; your attitude is so positive. February can be one of the most depressing months of the year.

Do not let it depress you.

You are in control. You choose whether you get up and workout or whether you stay in bed. You choose whether to exercise after work or whether to go home and overeat. These are your choices.

Make the right choice and do something good for you! Your attitude towards life comes from within. It’s how you feel about

you! When you don’t feel good physically, it’s very difficult to be positive, and it’s also hard for people to want be around you. Not many people want to be around a negative person. I realize that we all have “bad” days. I’m not saying everyday is going to be perfect. I’m not saying you are going to be happy everyday, however; when you feel good physically, you will have more days, a lot more days, when you are happy and positive. The world is a different place when you are happy. This life is so short and so precious, why be unhappy or negative everyday? I recently sent the following two quotes to my exercise class and I want to share them with you:

“Gratitude is an attitude that hooks us up to our source of supply. And the more grateful you are, the closer you become to your maker, to the architect of the universe, to the spiritual core of your being.”

I’m all about the saying that what you give out is what you receive. If you have a grateful, positive attitude, you will attract the same. It is that simple. Being happy and sharing that happiness does not require a lot of work. The truth is, when you have this attitude, you realize you don’t have to work so hard to achieve anything, such as earning more money, developing relationships, being happy with your life,

etc. It just comes naturally; this is how the universe works. Let it work for you!

“At Any Given Moment You Have the Power to Say, “This is not how the Story is going to End.” This quote is so powerful. You have the Power to change anything that is NOT working for you. You are in control of everything in your life and you need to believe that, and once you believe it, and once you give out good vibrations, the universe will repay you in ways you never expected. Stop allowing things and people to control you!

Just because it’s February, it’s not too late. As you read this, remember, tomorrow is a new day. It’s a day to take control; a day to wake up and do something that makes you feel good; a day to make positive changes, and a day to let the universe work in your favor. A friend once gave me the following advice, “Do not ask for something; if you expect it, the universe will provide it”. You must believe and you must give out positive vibes. And, as a result, the changes that will occur in your life will be amazing.

It is important to know that our emotions and physicality are strongly connected. When having a good day, your chosen outfit feels great, you’re have a good hair day, everything seems to be perfect, and somehow, your mental sharpness is spot on! That’s because when you feel good physically, feeling good mentally is automatic. When one feels good physically, even the days that aren’t perfect- maybe your hair didn’t come out exactly the way you hoped, or your outfit isn’t quite right, your mental state will still be positive. The two are more related than you think. To summarize and make this even clearer, it is a fact that practicing gratitude everyday will make you and those around you feel increased positive energy. This, of course, improves emotions and is connected to the physical because it enables the good energy to make you want to be in motion. So, if you’re not ready to exercise your body, start with exercising your brain. Practice daily rituals of being appreciative and watch how it changes your outlook on life and improves your overall attitude.

When you count your blessings in life, when you’re thankful for the things you have, your life takes on a new meaning; and it becomes a life of better quality. You begin to see yourself as worthy of a good life. You’re less likely to get bogged down by insecurities and again, your energy will increase. More energy means movement and movement means being physical. As a result, your mental and physical statuses will improve. Amazing, just by being grateful, your confidence grows, improving your self-esteem.

2. Improves relationships Expressing gratitude, even for the smallest things that your partner, friend, or family member does will make them want to do more. And, staying in the positive will contribute towards a more healthy relationship.

Even when in a discussion that may be uncomfortable, or expressive of a negative subject, for a better outcome, it is important to start the conversation on a positive

note and avoid the tendency to be on the attack. By always trying to keep in mind the good within any person, your gratitude will become automatic, hence improving all of life’s relationships.

3. Helps with better sleep I think that the way you sleep at night speaks a lot about you. It’s a definite indicator as to what is going on in your head and in your life.

If you find yourself battling your way to a good night’s sleep, you’re probably worried about something, and unless you find a way to put it in a more positive light, in the long run, you’ll likelylose more than just sleep.

Positive thoughts will help soothe your mind and provide relaxation.

This will translate into how you feel the next day. You’ll inevitably end up moreproductive and more confident. I’ve read that getting less than six hours of sleep per night, not only takes years from your life, but may actually be worse than driving while intoxicated. Getting sufficient rest enables improved emotional and physical energy.

4. Allows you to be more enjoyable to be around

Who wants to hang out with a negative person, someone who always has something bad to say about everything and everyone, and tends to make the small annoyances of life seem like the end of the world? Not me! On the other hand, if you’re with someone who’s positive, who reminds you to laugh at that stain on your white shirt, it puts a lot of things into perspective. I cannot express enough that the little things that cause you to worry, or minute problems that will be soon forgotten, are unimportant and not worth your time.

Unfortunately for me, it took the death of a young, vibrant person to come to this realization. Being grateful makes you a happier, more positive person and both of these emotions make you not only fun to be around, but mentally and physically capable of doing anything.

5. Helps you to be a better spouse, boss, employee, mom, dad, sister, brother, friend, etc.

At work, just as in your relationships, acknowledging someone’s efforts will give them confidence and boost their morale. Give a compliment when one is due and always show appreciation when someone is deserving of it. When you do something physical, you will undoubtedly feel healthier, and in turn become a better person.

Example: A woman makes the time to exercise everyday; she will feel good about herself and in

turn could end up being a better mom, wife, friend, daughter, etc. While participating on a work project as part of a team, everyone should commend each other’s efforts, for as a result; it will strengthen the feeling of camaraderie and help to build a stronger and more successful organization. And, don’t forget to be grateful for all of the team members, as they should be appreciative of you.

The bottom line is that it’s all about attitude. You can workout 24 hours a day, but if you’re attitude is negative you won’t look or be attractive. However; when you have a positive attitude or emit a bright light, you’ll always look good and will have the energy to move your body. I’ve said this a million times, but I’ll say it again; our bodies are meant to move. They move a lot easier when you have a grateful attitude.

Do your repairs ahead of time…

Once in a while, we getworks a request to help someone paint (orbefor As winter gradually its way out and temperatures advice of painting) ceramic tile or glass. The most common initial question is often some version of - Can these types of surfaces be painted with readily available paint (paint that can be bought at the local hardware store, paint store, big box store, etc.)?

The short answer is – Yes. However, the surfaces MUST be prepped properly and primed (with primer being the initial coat) prior to painting. If one were to use regular finish paint on top of tile or glass without proper prep and priming, the finish paint would not adhere effectively. It could even likely be scratched off with a fingernail without much effort at all!

Knowing this, what would be the most appropriate process for prepping and painting surfaces such as these? The first step would be to clean the surface that is to be painted – the use of diluted bleach/chlorine with a REALLY thorough rinsing is what I would recommend. Be sure there is no film (soap or other material) whatsoever on the surface after it is dry.

Once you have a clean, dry surface, my recommendation is to prime it with one coat of Stix Primer (made by a company called INSL-X). A quick search online (or obviously calling local paint suppliers) would be able to tell you where it can be found locally. We swear by this primer for this type of application. Other primers may claim they can do the trick, but when it comes to priming ceramic tile or glass, we have found that no other primer really comes close in terms of promoting adhesion on these types of surfaces.

The final step would be applying the finish coat. Any high quality finish will do the trick, depending on where the surface is located.

In other words, when painting exterior-facing glass, use a premium exterior finish; when painting ceramic tile in a bathroom, use a premium bathroom paint, etc.

The reasons for painting ceramic tile or glass will vary dramatically.

Though it not something that may be done extensively, there is absolutely a good amount of these types of projects being done regularly.

If the prep and priming process is done correctly, the finish on these surfaces should last for a VERY long time. However, if the prep and priming process is NOT done correctly, you can potentially have a very challenging peeling dilemma on your hands very soon after the project is completed.

A pre-sale home inspection is cost effective in the long run. There may be many small projects and repairs that you’ve been putting off. With everything involved in getting your home ready for sale, you may decide to only complete the cosmetic list thinking the buyer may overlook the rest… think again!

A buyer will most likely schedule a home inspection, however; many times, they will accept your pre-sale home inspection rather than absorb the cost themselves. Remember, your costs to repair anything prior to sale will always be less than what is requested of you, therefore, start to attack the punch list.

The buyer will normally seek the highest bid for repair in order to “pad” the actual cost. Also, any repair not done prior to sale leaves the buyer questioning possible neglect and leave them curious if there could be other issues not taken care of. They may even question routine maintenance as well.

Movie Review

MOVIE REVIEW

Yet again, the summer blockbusters are flowing into the theatres, and this time we have a unique movie, Baby Driver.

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a getaway driver for one of the most famed crime bosses, Doc (Kevin Spacey). Many of his criminals like Buddy ( Jon Hamm) and Bats ( Jamie Foxx) are skeptical of the boy. However, what they don’t know is that a great tragedy occurred in his childhood, leaving Baby permanently and emotionally scarred.

The movie starts with his first heist, which goes smoothly as well as being pretty damn awesome. Baby is accompanied by two crazed lovers, Griff ( Jon Bernthal) and Darling (Eiza González) who love excessive amounts of PDA, and the snarky and skeptical Buddy.

Baby lives in an old apartment with his blind and disabled roommate, Joseph (CJ Jones). When he goes home, baby takes his recordings from the day and creates his own songs. However, when he is out he meets a lovely waitress named Deborah (Lily James). The two immediately hit it off, as both have an immense love for music, and well, each other. Joseph becomes increasingly worried about Baby’s job, but he reassures him that he only has one more to do. Although Joseph knows, Deborah does not, and Baby intends to keep it that way.

However, fate had other plans.

Baby’s second heist goes a little off the plan. A civilian with surprisingly, several guns pursues them and they are forced to steal a car. After that, it seems as if Baby is done heisting. However, fate is not on his side and he is forced to rejoin a life of crime, and the life of crime wants to ruin his own. His last and final heist becomes a fight for his life.

Overall, I thought Baby Driver was a great movie. It was a great action movie with amazing car chases as well as very heated moments, violence, emotion, and good old humor.

However, there were some parts I did not like as much as others. For example, I felt as if the car chases could have been better. However, the last 30 minutes definitely made up for the lack of action. I liked how realistic the movie was emotion-wise, but I had hoped to see more of Baby’s backstory because there was only a few flashbacks.

The one thing I liked the most was the interaction between Baby and Joseph, his blind roommate. Although, my least favorite part was the ending where Baby gives himself up to the cops. To me, it felt like too much of a sappy ending for such an action packed movie. Overall, I give Baby Driver a 5.5 out of 6 diamonds. Rated R for swearing and violence.

Crate Games – Tips for helping your dog love his crate!

By: Heidi Palmer McNeil Pooch Pawsitive www.poochpawsitive.com In the wild, dogs live in a den and it is natural for them to eat and sleep there. The den is usually a safe place for dogs to go. Most of the time, dogs like to go into their cozy den. But then there’s the occasion when dogs just don’t like it and want no part of it!

Why do we need to use a crate? For puppies, we use a crate for housetraining. At the veterinarian, a crate is used for rest, confinement, or medical treatment. At the groomer, they use a crate for keeping a dog still while blow-drying. In a car or on an airplane, we use a crate to keep the dog safe and confined. At home, we use a crate to keep our dog out of mischief. If your dog needs to do any of these things, then you will need your dog to like, or at least tolerate a crate.

Here are some tips for helping your dog adjust to a crate: • In a safe room or small area (like an exercise pen or kitchen), leave the crate door open and randomly toss treats into the crate. When your dog goes to investigate, he will be pleasantly rewarded with something good!

• If your dog won’t even go close to the crate, you can leave a trail of treats from the middle of the room toward the front, and just inside the crate.

• You can also put your dog’s food bowl just inside the crate and leave the door open. As your dog gets braver,

gradually move the food bowl toward the back of the crate so that its whole body has to go inside. Continue to leave the crate door open.

• I like to teach the dog by stating, “Go in your crate” and tossing a treat inside and letting the dog go in to get it. Then, I’ll immediately say, “Come on out” and toss a treat outside of the crate so that the dog has to come out. Play this game with your dog’s dry food (kibble) at mealtime.

• Once the dog is readily going into the crate, repeat the above exercise and close the crate door for 1 second.

Then state, “Come on out”. Repeat this until the dog doesn’t mind the door being closed for 1 second. Then, gradually increase the amount of time that the crate door is closed. Close the door for 2 seconds, 3 seconds, 4 seconds, etc., until the dog gets comfortable with being in the crate for longer periods of time.

Sometimes, a dog just has a really bad association with a crate. If you can identify the cause, then work with a certified trainer to help with the problem. Otherwise, try an alternative confinement area like an exercise pen, or room of its own, to keep your dog safe while you are not home.

CSC PAYMASTER HELPS FREEWAY LAUNDRY AND FREEWAY CARWASH CLEAN UP THEIR PAYROLL Warwick-based company saves company $27K in payroll and processing costs annually.

PROVIDENCE—Few people care much about the world of payroll in business—until something goes wrong—and employees do not get paid. That creates real problems for those now racing to ensure their financial obligations are met and their checks are not returned for insufficient funds.

Haunted Labyrinth Celebrates 33 Years of Scares

By Jenn Lombari Rhode Island’s longest running Halloween attraction is returning this year to celebrate 33 years in its Cranston location. Be prepared to get scared!

Being a “family friendly haunt”, they rely on special effects and the element of surprise instead of blood, guts and gore; and they are very good at what they do.

Haunted Labyrinth has always been 100% volunteer run.

Proceeds go toward the Diocese of Providence Youth Program, Rejoice In Hope. Every year is a different layout and theme. The rooms change, the path through the haunted house changes, and while many of the same volunteers participate every year, there is always new talent hiding in the dark. From actors, to security, concession stands, layout designers, carpenters, graphics and marketing, an average of one hundred volunteers are involved in the production process each year.

Planning and mapping out the Haunted Labyrinth starts in February and lasts until June, and production starts in July and ends just before opening night at the end of September. The theme is chosen in March, but the staff is very good at keeping secrets. They pick a theme and go room by room to decide what will be needed for their building budget. Proceeds from the previous year are used for lumber and whatever else is needed for the building project.

About 20 adults are involved in this stage and towards the end, students from grades 8-12 can volunteer to piece it all together. And a bonus is that they receive service hours for their time and effort. Information on how to volunteer is on the Haunted Labyrinth website.

The staff and thought process has also evolved over the years.

They are proud to say that if an idea comes along that seems too difficult to accomplish, they make an extra effort to ensure that it gets done. They never sway from anything that may appear to be impossible to get done. These are the types of decisions that result in the best possible outcome.

And, being the largest indoor attraction has its benefits. If it rains, the staff is able to move the line into t he cafeteria area below the haunted house, so its success is not dependent on the weather. Saturday nights, DJ Mikey B provides entertainment for people waiting in line inside or outside for a Haunted House Party. Tickets are kept affordable at only $12 for any night.

Building coordinator, Joe Fazio, has been on board since 2002. He explained, “We are very economical when we plan and build. We want as much money as possible to go to the Diocese.” After planning, a WISHLIST is made for items they will need for props, and is posted in select places online and out in the local areas. This doesn’t mean that they will come and clean out your basement or attic; but, if you have furniture that they need, a volunteer will gladly come pick it up.

Members of the Haunted Labyrinth staff will be at the 30th Annual Apple Festival held at Johnston Memorial Park on September 16th. This is a free event that is hosted by the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce. Amongst its many attractions and activities, Haunted Labyrinth will be releasing its theme and new logo. A professional photographer will be there to take free pictures with the new logo and a few monsters, and permission slips for high school students will be available if they would like to volunteer.

Sections of the Haunted Labyrinth are stored away and repainted each year for the new theme. The walls are folded up and props are taken apart and reused in new settings. The outside of the building is also stored and reused.

Each year, the outside of the building is transformed into an old Victorian mansion based on the vision of Leonard Pickles. Are you familiar with the Tower Of Terror in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studio’s Theme Park?

He designed that too. In the past, he even helped with mapping of the Labyrinth.

Opening night is September 29th and will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until Halloween.

Since Halloween falls on a Tuesday this year, they will be operating the whole weekend before, including Monday and Tuesday.
