I know that some people are uneasy about cooking with veal. I buy mine from Sweet & Salty Farm in Little Compton, where they raise the animals humanely. That makes for flavorful meat without the guilt. But if you still feel uncomfortable about using veal, you can use a combination of beef and pork. I also buy veal bones and make my own veal bone broth.

Make the meatballs: Combine the veal, breadcrumbs, parsley, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, garlic, onion, and egg in a bowl, mixing the ingredients thoroughly. Don't over-mix. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Heat a tablespoon of the olive oil in an oven-proof pan, and form the meatballs one by one, placing them in the pan. Brown the meatballs on all sides over medium heat. Place the pan in the oven to cook the meatballs for 10 more minutes. In a saucepan, heat the veal bone broth. Once the meatballs have cooked in the oven, transfer them to the pot of veal bone broth and cover with a lid, keeping the heat on low. If the broth doesn't cover the meatballs, turn them every once in a while to keep them moist on all sides. Cook the meatballs in the broth for about 30 minutes and transfer them to a large sauté pan. Turn the saucepan with the veal broth on high and reduce it to about 1/2 cup. Season it with salt and pepper. In a large pot, cook the pasta to a bit firmer than al dente in well-salted water. Drain and set aside. In the large sauce pan with the meatballs, add the butter and the half-and-half. Add the reduced veal broth, the pasta, and the peas. Gently mix the ingredients in the pan until the peas have warmed through and the sauce clings to the pasta. Serve immediately.

creamy potato salad with bacon peas and onions Now that the weather is turning around it’s time to branch off on to lighter dishes and sides that are perfect for a picnic or a casual dinner or lunch. Potato salad is such a diverse food to play around with, there are many variations, but this one is especially good and has that smoky flavor that adds so much to mix. It’s a great dish that compliments so many spring/summer time meals.

Directions
2 lbs. red potatoes
In a pot boil chopped potatoes until tender. After they boil for about 2 minutes, add the frozen peas and let boil for about 2 minutes. Drain and toss with butter, cumin, salt and pepper.

1 cup mayonnaise

Then in a pan on medium heat Sautee onions with a tablespoon of butter until they turn a golden brown. Fry out the bacon and reserve about 2 Tbsp. of bacon grease for the potato salad.
Add the mustard, mayonnaise, lemon juice, bacon grease and crumbled bacon to the potato and peas stir and mix, if you want to add more mustard or mayonnaise for taste or texture then do as you please.

Ingredients: 3 tablespoons Brown Sugar
I'm usually a pork rib guy. But recently, I bought a nice slab of beef ribs from my butcher. I love the flavor of the Kona coffee crusted NY Strip at the Capital Grille in Providence, and decided to try my hand at my own coffee rub for these ribs. (If you don’t have Kona coffee on hand, use your favorite.)
1 tablespoon Ground Kona Coffee
In a bowl, combine the brown sugar, coffee, salt, garlic, onion, and cocoa. Mix well.
1 tablespoon Kosher Salt 1 teaspoon Granulated Garlic 1 teaspoon Granulated Onion 1 Teaspoon Unsweetened Cocoa Powder 5 lbs. Beef Ribs
Remove the skin on the underside of the ribs. I do this by sliding a knife under a corner of the skin, exposing just enough of a tab that I can grab onto. The meat can be slippery, so pulling the skin off with a folded piece of paper towel in your hands gives a better grip. Cut the ribs into 2-rib portions. Place all the rib pieces on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Generously rub the coffee rub into all sides of the rib pieces, turning them meat-side-up, and let them sit on the baking sheet at room temperature for about a half hour, while you warm the oven up to 350 degrees. Place the sheet pan of ribs in the oven and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the ribs from the oven, and lower the heat to 250. Wrap the ribs in aluminum foil, 2 sections per packet, and place them back on the baking sheet. Place the baking sheet back in the oven and cook them for 4 more hours. Remove the ribs from the oven and take them out of the foil, placing them back on the baking sheet and back into the 250-degree oven for 30 more minutes. ShopInRI 13

History of the DONUT…
According to Tori Avery, one of the favorites of web food personalities, the history of the doughnut goes back centuries, long before the discovery of the New World. In ancient Rome and Greece, cooks would fry strips of pastry dough and coat them with honey or fish sauce (Eww!). In Medieval times, Arab cooks started frying up small portions of unsweetened yeast dough, drenching the plain fried blobs in sugary syrup to sweeten them. The fritters spread into northern Europe in the 1400’s and became popular throughout England, Germany and the Netherlands. In 15th century Germany, where sugar was hard to come by, they were often cooked savory with fillings like meat or mushroom. The Pilgrims and Dutch settlers brought doughnuts to America. Eventually holes were added to the center of the fritter to create the shape of doughnut we’re familiar with today. This invention came out of necessity. At a certain point, egg yolks were added to the dough– it was discovered that this produced a richer and firmer end-product. The problem was, the fritters would often end up raw in the center after frying– the exterior would cook before the inner part of the doughnut did. The addition of a hole in the center eliminated that problem.

And, it’s best enjoyed en route to the ocean with the windows down and sprinkles all over the car.” And again in January of 2017, the viral Food video community, Tastemade, named Allie’s one of the the 18 best doughnut shops in the United States. Tastemade described the pastries at Allie’s Donuts in Rhode Island as “soft and fluffy,” softer (“raised”) or cakier (“old-fashioned”). PS. Payne’s Donuts Payne’s Donuts is a Block Island staple that is open seasonally. During the summer months, people literally wait in line to get one of Carol Payne’s killer donuts. It is located on Ocean Avenue, just outside of the New Harbor Payne’s Dock. If you’re not docked at Payne’s or Champlin’s Marinas, it is just a short walk or cab ride from town. Your taste glands will do a dance of thanks and you’ll be in line again immediately after you get a taste of your first Payne’s Donut. They say it’s the Block Island water that makes them taste so good. You be the judge. Located on Payne’s Dock and they serve their famous donuts called “Killer Donuts” & that they are! The donuts come in 3 flavors: plain, sugar or cinnamon sugar. Take the Block Island locals for their word when they tell you that “Killer” doesn’t give the donuts any justice! By: Colleen Arruda - High Spirits Liquors Wine and Spirit Specialist, All-Around Good Time Springtime is officially upon us, and with it we usher in with open arms the need for warmer weather wines. As we dip our toes in the idea that it’s finally time to put away the snow shovels and winter gear, we gleefully anticipate the need to drink more thirst quenching refresments that are more apropos for spring! I’ve noticed over the years that there are two requirements for the beginning of spring. First, the inaugural trip to Mr. Lemon trip as you force yourself to power through the brain freeze, reminding you of how long you’ve waited to again indulge in their ice cold treats. And then the moment the temperature climbs above fifty degrees, it instantly becomes rosé season. I’ve compiled a list of pink hued beauties from different regions that anyone would love to have on their table. First up to put on your list of must try wines is the Aime Roquesante Cotes de Provence rosé. The beauty in the glass of this classic French rosé is accompanied by aromas of stone fruits like peach and cherry mixed with strawberry; and both factors immediately wipe away all memories of our snow laden spell. On the palate, look for fruit forward notes of strawberry and watermelon, with a nice mid-palate of ripe cherries. Mild acidity and the finish of herbs and fresh cut grass make this a perfect wine to pair with everything from salads to rich creamy pasta. The Aime Roquesante’s versatility and affordability will keep this one in heavy rotation throughout any season. And then, the Ameztoi Rubentis Rosado is a show stopper. Hailing from the Basque region of Spain, this salmon colored beauty is both stunning to look at and an utter joy for the taste buds. The Rubentis is made from indigenous white and red Hondarribi grapes and bottled with a bit of CO2 to give the wine a spritzy effervescence. Crisp green apple and zesty lime coupled with candied strawberry make this rosado not only super delicious but also quite versatile for food pairings. Try the Ameztoi Rubentis with spicy Thai food, delicate shellfish dishes, and everything in between. No matter the time or the temp, this is a must try; but don’t wait too long because there isn’t going to be a lot of this wine floating around. Next up on the world tour of rosés is the Cantine Elvio Tintero Vino Rosato. Comprised of mostly Barbera, this Italian stallion of a wine is the perfect mealtime companion. Ripe wild strawberry, Meyer lemon and fresh acidity create a perfect medley with the wine’s effervescent nature. This rosé, or “summer water” as Madonna calls it, is appropriate to pair with just about any style of fare imaginable. Enjoy with rich, creamy pasta dishes, light and simple salads, or even just a dip in the pool. No matter which of the rosés you choose, you’ll be in for a treat; but the best piece of advice would be to try them all! ShopInRI 19

Asparagus and Fregola Salad By: Chef Adam Baffoni
Hailing from Sardinia, Italy, fregola is pasta made from semolina dough that is rolled into tiny balls and toasted. It’s similar to couscous and has countless applications. Traditionally, fregola is served with shellfish and tomatoes, but in the spring and summer time, it makes for a fantastic salad with any fresh, native Rhode Island vegetables. For this recipe, I use asparagus because the local asparagus is incredible at this time of year; but you can use any fresh greens or vegetables that are available. For a hearty lunch, top it with grilled chicken or salmon, or serve it as a side dish with dinner. Directions To make the vinaigrette, combine the garlic, canola oil, and olive oil in a small pan and cook over low-medium heat until the garlic becomes golden on all sides and is cooked through completely. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Next, remove the garlic from the oil. Add the garlic, honey, oregano, and apple cider vinegar to a blender. Season well with salt and pepper and blend Ingredients 1lb. asparagus, trimmed and cut until smooth; then, while the blender is running, slowly pour in the oil to form an emulsion.

Heat a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Next, fill a large bowl with iced water. Add the asparagus to the boiling water and cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until it becomes a dark, vibrant green. Using a slotted spoon or small strainer, transfer the asparagus to the bowl of water to stop it from cooking. Once it has cooled completely, remove from the water and store in a refrigerator. Add the fregola to the boiling water and cook until soft, then strain and rinse with cold to cool water. Once the fregola is cooled, add it to a large bowl with the asparagus and feta cheese. Season with salt and pepper, and toss to combine. Add as much of the vinaigrette as you’d like and toss again to coat. ShopInRI 23

Mother’s Little Helper - Simone’s
and oh such the party pooper. The routine of the week has kick-started with day 1 of 5, and here we go. Recently, I signed up for a Simone’s cooking class, which happened to be on a Monday. At first, I thought it might not work, but now, I am in love with this local escape. The class was called “Clams and Mussels and Cioppino, Oh My!”
The Rolling Stones were onto something when they wrote that famous song “Mother’s Little Helper”, in 1966. Mother, wife, short-order cook, schlepper, cleaner and “quicker picker upper”- just a few words to describe the hundreds of rather mundane tasks I do, as do the other Moms. It does make one wilted and just a tiny bit cranky…maybe a lot. There is something universally sobering and somber about Monday nights. Just when you got out of the Sunday night blues, here is Ms. Monday with her stiff upper lip, negative demeanor and icy ways. She is serious 36 ShopInRI
The atmosphere at Simone’s is cool, chic and fresh, comfortable and open with pops of yellow in the décor. The space was reserved for the class participants, as the restaurant is closed on Monday, so it felt very specialized. I signed up with my friend Jackie, from Wander + Lash, and we slithered- quick like a bunny- out of our dinner time routines to be at the class by 6 p.m. It was a full and festive crowd, all perfectly positioned at the open kitchen with smiles and wines. Joe Simone led the entire class which featured succulent dishes made with a variety of these mollusk delights. He announced: “Tonight, we are celebrating the mussel and clam!”… Steamed Mussels and Shallots with Crème Fraiche, Grilled Clams with Dill
Oreganato, Linguini ala Vongole, and Roasted Cioppino with clams, mussels and scallops. We were poured generous refills of our wine and presented with gourmet meatballs while we waited for the Instructor Extraordinaire to get started. The evening culminated with a chocolaty concoction. I learned a great deal about local mussels and clams, how to pick them, how to clean them, how to cook them in four tremendous, yet simple, recipes made with fresh ingredients, and of course, local favorites as recommended by our chef. Joe has a unique ability to make guests feel so special, comfortable and relaxed. I wore no apron, no hair net and chopped nothing. Really nice for a change to just absorb the instruction and taste all. I now have a lovely recipe booklet to try at home (just not Mondays). Joe is a spirited, passionate and dynamic culinary instructor and talented chef. For me, his classes provided the ultimate escape from my mundane Mondays. Hubby David got to take over the routine with the kids, conducting grilled cheese experiments at home while I got to Go Out, socialize, learn and dine. I left happy. Grumpy Ms. Monday had nothing to say to me except “See you next week”. I said “I don’t think so”.

BARRINGTON – All it takes is just one visit to Medici Gelato and it’ll certainly become one of your favorite and delightful dessert destinations. An intoxicating kaleidoscope of flavors, such as dark chocolate, Café Barista, lemon chiffon, and raspberry, entices guests to sample and enjoy treats that rival some of Europe’s finest gelaterias.
Barrington owners, Jean and Robert Robertson, opened the ice cream shop in September 2014 to rave reviews from customers eager to enjoy delicious frozen specialty desserts without having to travel thousands of miles and across the sea to Italy. “I was looking for a new career,” begins Jean. “I wanted to work close to home and I was looking for something fun.” According to the busy entrepreneur, she always “loved” ice cream, and enjoys fond memories of visiting local shops in her native Western Massachusetts; and she even ventured into Boston for sundaes. Bob had similar ice cream memories, and both 40 ShopInRI
treasured special visits to Bailey’s, a now closed Boston landmark famous for their sundaes and other confections. The Robertsons laugh when they recall their first date, which included a visit to Bailey’s to enjoy an ice cream sundae – coffee ice cream lavishly topped with buttery smooth hot butterscotch. “When I wanted to open a business, I kept coming back to ice cream,” Jean continued.
Eventually, the couple purchased a charming home – complete with beautiful bay windows – and transformed the first floor into a delightful ice cream parlor. And here is where Medici Gelato was born, named in honor of the prosperous 13th century Italian family that gained success in banking and commerce. According to the Robertsons, gelato, or Italian-style ice cream, is made with whole milk and is lower in fat and sugar, making it a healthy dessert. Medici’s gelato is made on the premises in small batches and is gluten-free, except when cookies or toppings are added. “Gelato flavors are more intense, Bob continues, adding that some of the most popular flavors at
Medici include mascarpone with amarena cherries, hazelnut, pistachio, lemon, strawberry, dark chocolate, and Straccietella, a rich vanilla gelato with ribbons of melted chocolate. ”It just melts in your mouth,” Jean shares. “It’s like chocolate chip with better chocolate.” The Robertsons also make sorbetto, which is made from fresh fruit and water, rather than milk. “Our biggest sorbetto seller is lemon,” Bob adds, noting that his favorite flavor is Café Barista, a smooth treat that gives coffee lovers a very intense rich flavor. According to the Robertsons, one sure winner is the shop’s gelato pies, made with either a rich buttery shortbread or chocolate cookie crust and filled with gelato. The treat can be served plain or with various toppings. Café Barista with Chocolate Crunch is very popular, as is the salted caramel. “Gelato pies are popular desserts for holidays, book clubs, entertaining, or for birthdays,” Jean says, adding that when given one or two day’s notice, most any flavor can be made.
This fun-filled experience is popular at weddings, bridal showers, graduation parties, barbeques, clambakes, and other events where celebrants of all ages want to relax, have fun, and indulge in refreshing cold desserts.

Hi folks; I hope this article finds you prosperous and in good health, but mostly in good health! Now let’s see if we can make you even more gorgeous than you already are! Is your hair brittle and dry, with split ends and without any shine? Well, I have some good news for you! Cutting your hair is not the only solution. With the proper care and gentle styling, you can bring vibrancy and shine back to your hair. Most damaged hair tells a story of minor abusive practices heaping small injury upon mounting damage. There may have been some rough experiences with styling tools, such as brushes, blow-dryers, curling irons, the use of flat irons on too high of a heat setting, etc. Even stress or an unbalanced diet can contribute to hair problems. In some cases, improper care is the sole culprit. Over time, rough treatment dries the hair out, the naturally smooth cuticle layer becomes rough, the hair starts to appear brittle, and then split ends appear Put on Velvet Gloves to Care for Your Damaged Hair Treat your hair with loving care like a sick child, by keeping all potential harm away from it. Be sure to use a shampoo for damaged hair and massage it gently throughout your wet hair. Your hair stylist and colorists will know of the best products for your particular hair. By Rosanna M. Ortiz When did Carmen & Ginger concept begin? Carmen & Ginger began when I was laid off in 2008 and I wanted to open up an online store for vintage good. I launched the store online in 2009 and it took off. I went back to the corporate world two years later and realized that this was my calling. I was not happy so the opportunity presented itself to open my brick and mortar shop. So, Black Friday in 2013 I opened in the Arcade Providence! I was one of the first tenants in the Arcade Providence and have been here ever since. What was your profession before you became the Vintage queen in Providence? 46 ShopInRI
Commercial construction. I come from a family of collectors and have always been a collector. Sold off and on eBay, it had always been on my mind to have a store and was scared of the risk. So I decided why not and thought I would take the leap. Though, commercial construction taught me a lot and I use the skills I learned in this profession currently. What made you choose to open Carmen & Ginger in the historic Arcade Providence? I knew if I was going to open a store downtown I needed to be near tourists and students. The Arcade Providence caters to both those demographics and the size was perfect to begin. At 400 square feet it was a perfectly cozy start, then in 2015 I decided to expand to 900 square feet. The Arcade was so generous with the expansion and now Carmen &
Ginger has two storefronts in the Arcade. What does Carmen & Ginger carry and what differentiates you from other vintage boutiques? I have a little bit of everything. Apparel; shoes; knick-knacks; kitchen ware; linens; paper goods; novelty items and tablecloths just to name a few! I really have everything! My background is in illustration so I am drawn to those pieces that have illustration and interesting design that captures the eye. My men’s department has expanded and is one of my bigger sellers. Half of the new space is the men’s department. Men are drawn to the store for the unique menswear I carry. Also, my tobacco related items sell out immediately! Would you consider vintage clothing to be part of the current fashion realm?
Absolutely, just like in current fashions trends vintage are just as important in this genre as well. There will always be women looking for pin up dresses, that n4ever goes out of vintage style. The French cuff men’s shirts sell out because major labels showcased them in current fashion trends this past season. All of the current trends affect the vintage trend, 100%. Denim is huge right now, tweed, linens; tradition fabrics always come back in to style. I notice you carry some high-end designers. What are some of those labels you sell? I get a lot of them! Everything from Ralph Lauren; Burberry; classic Coach collection; Lanvin; Hermes scarves; Pucci and Kate Spade to name a few. Where do you find your inventory for Carmen & Ginger? I look everywhere all the time. Flea markets, sales, you have to have patience for digging. I love to dig and find items that the normal person may pass up! But this is cathartic for me, I love what I do and I love finding those pieces that I know someone would want to buy. You also have a substantial jewelry selection! Tell me about that. I do! I have a love for specialty is jewelry that’s made in Rhode Island. For example, Trifari, Money and Coro are brands that are specific to Rhode Island. I like to find things that are made
in Rhode Island and be the vintage boutique that can offer these local treasures. I noticed that you also have items that are collector pieces. Do you have a demand for those high-ticket items? Yes, most items in my store are under $100. I want people to come in and be able to afford items. I don’t want them to be intimated so I carry things that are low-priced such as vintage cards, etc. At the same time I want to offer collector pieces for the connoisseur that are spectacular and you can’t find it anywhere else. It’s a discovery that they can still afford buy. Collector pieces involve research and time and it’s a great moment when you find something that is rare. Lastly, where did the name “Carmen & Ginger derive from? Carmen was my beloved cat and Ginger was a friends dog. Initially this boutique was to specialize in all pet vintage items. Twin River Chiropractic - “Dr. Steve” By: Jenn Lombari “We have a holistic approach here”, says Dr. Steven D’Antonio of Twin River Chiropractic. He and his wife, Dr. Jennifer D’Antonio, opened their practice in 2008 at 305 Farnum Pike in Smithfield, RI. Dr. Steve, as he is referred to adds, “When people come in, we don’t only want to find out where they are sore, or if they have a symptom or a diagnosis; we want to educate the patient about what is wrong and what they can do about it so we can make them feel better to ensure that those problems don’t come back again and again. It took one person and a non medical, non surgical approach to set Dr. Steve on the path to becoming a chiropractor. It started when he was younger and 52 ShopInRI
had hurt his back. At 6’3”, he had a bit of poor posture and ended up rupturing a disc. After a month of pills not helping the pain, he went to his mother’s chiropractor and instead of the recommended surgery from the last doctor, this one wanted to move subluxations and adjust his spine. Within a month of repeat visits, Dr. Steve was moving around like nothing was ever wrong with him. No pills, no surgery. This is the approach he takes with his patients because he truly believes that it saved his life. Nerve channels had been aligned after sticking with the doctor visits for months, and even his allergies had improved significantly. At Twin River Chiropractic, they teach long term health. People come to their free workshops to learn lifestyle choices that help. Eating better, exercising better, postural long term health, and on and on. The workshops vary quite a bit. Patients can bring anyone with them on a Tuesday night for a half hour health forum. The forums range in topics from how to exercise despite the weather, nutrition, ergonomics in the workplace,
carpel tunnel, sleeping better‌and more. And, it’s highly recommended that parents have their children adjusted regularly-even babies. Starting good spine health at a young age can often lead to the avoidance of ear tubes, braces, and other supports. Dr. Steve uses his own kids as an example. He has a 7 month old, a 4 year old, and a 6 year old; and they were all examined and adjusted when they were born.
They all continue to have regular adjustments and due to that, along with healthy lifestyle choices, they have hardly ever been sick and have never needed any antibiotics. Even painful ear infections, which lots of children are prone to, were cleared with simple adjustments. He explained that when someone is on antibiotics and other medicines at a young age, it can affect them down the road as they get older. Being Fit Over 50 By Susan Gazerro
Most people put a lot of thought into their financial situation, 401Ks, retirement, etc.; but what about health? Being physically fit when over 50 is extremely important. It is imperative to understand that our bodies are meant to move. As we get older, it’s easier to submit to falling, slipping, and injury. How do we prevent this? It can be prevented by staying active and physically fit. Having stability, strength and flexibility make all the difference. I love the women who take my classes and are over the age of 50. I explain to them that they should work at their own pace; and the fact that they are there and moving is awesome. That’s because these are dedicated women who keep their bodies moving. Let me add, it’s never too late to start. I train women in their 30s and 40s who have never worked out, or who have not worked out in a very long time. They are starting from scratch. When they get discouraged if they can’t do something, I say, “Imagine how you could feel in another five or ten years if you didn’t start now”. Injury is one thing, age is another. It truly is all in your mind. That is where it begins. If you are physically cable of moving, you are physically capable of an exercise routine. If you are already in a routine that includes an exercise program, be sure that it’s balanced with cardio, strength and flexibility. I always tell my classes, cardio burns fat for the period you are doing it. Whether it be walking, running, swimming, an aerobic class, etc., you are burning fat for that period of time. When you are doing strength training, whether it’s free weights, resistant bands, medicine balls, TRX, or just your body weight, you continue to burn fat for an average of up to two days after you finish. That timing depends on weight, age, height, etc.; but your body continues to burn fat as you’ve activated muscles and they will keep burning. Cardio is just as important. Although it’s only burning fat for the period you are doing it, it is the only thing that works the heart muscle. And, the heart muscle is the most important muscle in the body! Flexibility is also important as we get older; and, at any age, it’s also important 56 ShopInRI
to maintain full range of motion without stiffening up. If you are not currently exercising, start somewhere. Even walking is a start and it gets you moving. You need to move! Get professional help. Go to a gym or seek out a personal trainer, even it’s once a week. Having a trainer can help keep you focused, motivated, and accountable. When you work out at home, it’s easy to get distracted. When you have a trainer or you go to a gym, it helps you to feel accountable. Allow me guide you as to where you can safely begin. Try something new if you are doing to same old routine. I always say one can see and feel change when things are changed up. Even your body will reach a plateau if you are doing the same thing day in and day out. Overall, stay consistent in doing something, but change it up. You have to make exercise and movement a part of your daily routine. If you choose to seek a trainer, it is for the advice as to what to do, how often to do it, what weight to use, etc.; but you must do it consistently. Nutrition plays a huge role, as well. I am not one for diets. It’s not about dieting; it’s about eating healthy and making a lifestyle change. Diets work in the short term, and yes, sometimes it’s the kick start that one needs; but most often than not, when you go off the diet, you end up gaining all the weight back and more. You need to make this a life style. Start with a new exercise routine, and then focus on your eating habits. Are you eating healthy, and are you eating the proper portions? Ask a trainer or nutritionist for assistance and advice. Not only does a woman’s metabolism slow down by 7% every ten years, our bones weaken as we age. Strength training is imperative for older people, especially women, because bone and muscle density are breaking down, potentially leading to osteoporosis. Strength training will slow the process significantly and help keep your bones stronger.
As a fitness instructor and personal trainer, I can honestly say I have never had someone tell me they felt worse after a class or a session-ever! However, I do frequently have people tell me how much better they feel, how much stronger they feel, how much more comfortable they are in their clothes, how much more energy they have, and overall, how much happier they are. Nancy DellaRocco, an executive for Harvard Business School, met the above criteria, yet still felt like she was missing a critical element of her success – her hair. Admittedly, Nancy is not much of a makeup person. She dresses well, but says her naturally-curly, flowing, and partially-gray hair is her defining feature. The Passing of a Legend “It’s my world, and I want to have a little fun!” The loveable bad guy: Don Rickles 1926-2017 By Andrew Allin
When the legendary entertainer Don Rickles passed away last month, show business stars and people from all walks of life lauded his kindness, humbleness, decency, and talent. Rickles had been an actor, and often threw in some singing and dancing, but mostly what this gentle, sweet-natured man had been was the first infamous insult comic of the television generation. You’ve got to be a pretty nice guy to spend half a century insulting and mocking audiences the world over and be lauded for your decency when you pass away. Such as was the delicious irony of Donald James Rickles, known to your parents and grandparents, and millions if victims as Don Rickles, “The Merchant of Venom”. During his career in the Golden Age of television Rickles was like a one-man Celebrity Roast dais; imagine Howard Stern, Nick Di Palo, Lisa Lampanelli, Jeff Ross, and Anthony Jeselnik all rolled into one short, pudgy, bullet-headed menace. world, yet everyone knew he was just From a SHOPINRI review of a Don kidding. His New York Times Obituary documented humble beginnings: “Donald Jay Rickles was born in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens on May 8, 1926, to Max Rickles, an insurance salesman, and the former Etta Feldman. During World War II, he honed his comedic skills while serving in the Navy. (“On the ship that I went over to the Philippines,” he told The New York Times in 2015, “out of 300 men I was the class comedian.”) After being discharged, he followed his father into the insurance business, but when he had trouble getting his customers to sign on the dotted line, decided to try acting.” For his entire life, Rickles downplayed the combat he saw serving on a PT (“Patrol, Torpedo”) boat in the Philippines during WWII. All PT
boat training occurred in Portsmouth, RI, at Melville (PT captain John F. Kennedy trained there, too) with combat in the Pacific a sure bet. Glamorized by the Navy during the conflict for recruiting purposes, life on the wooden gunboats was dangerous duty; attacking much larger and more powerful enemy warships, transports, tankers, and barges with torpedoes, bearing only deck-mounted machine guns if the action came too close. The fast-attack craft often engaged large convoys of these heavier ships which out-numbered their small formations. “I did duty on a PT boat in the Philippines during World War II,” he told Men’s Journal magazine. “We saw some trouble, but to go into it would be a big line of baloney because other guys saw a lot more. When you’re 18, you’re just so busy being scared and having fun – a crazy mixture – that you never thought of dying. I was the ship clown. Whenever the crew would get down, I made fun of the officers. But I came home a more mature guy.”

But when you’re different, you can last. - Don Rickles After exiting the Navy, Rickles set his sights on being a classically trained actor, and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Frustrated at the lack of roles for a young unknown short of stature and hair, he took to performing stand-up comedy in dives and cheap clubs. Patrons were loud, drunk, and often abusive to the funnyman interrupting the flesh-baring.

It was 1957...over his embarrassed objections, Rickles’ irrepressible mother went up to the hotel room of another mom-boss, Dolly Sinatra, asking the first mother to buttonhole her famous son to catch the Rickles show. A few nights later, apparently under orders, Sinatra strolled in to catch the set, bringing with him an established a reputation for fisticuffs and thuggish entourages.
When an association of professional comics, the Friars’ Club, began televising their friendly but rough roasts of each other in the 1970s, America got to see Rickles take down such legendary guests as Orson Wells, Jimmy Steward, and his pals Johnny Carson, Sinatra, and Dean Martin. Most viewers didn’t realize that his jabs were mostly adlibbed from the dais. It had always been that way, and remained so to the end.
Rickles’ devastating ad libs to hecklers exposed a hidden talent and he developed a new stage persona, becoming, as writer Jason Ankeny summed it up best “a loud-mouthed misanthrope attacking everyone in range.” In the 1950s people were finally shaking off seventeen weary years of war and the Great Depression to unwind and relax. Folks were polite in public but still said awful, bigoted things in private. Rickles reversed that to hilarious effect; substituting pleasant insincerities for funny, harsh insults he didn’t really mean. That doesn’t seem so incendiary now after years of American culture slipping into much more abrasive public expression - but Rickles recalled “in those days it was unheard of to make fun of people like I did.” Rickles finally got the notice he deserved thanks to support from a famous fan – legendary singer-actor Frank Sinatra. Sinatra’s mixture of deep talent, kind gestures, abrupt cruelty, and effortless cool mesmerized a generation of men and women. He often traveled with an entourage of thugs and lowlife mobsters. Years
“In walks Frank and his friends – all scientists,” Rickles deadpans, causing the crowd to burst out laughing. “And I said “Frank! Be yourself – hit someone!” More laughter as Rickles continues, “Thank God he laughed, or I would’ve been on the Jerry Lewis Telethon!” (Hint: not as a performer)...” Rickles became friends with the notoriously mercurial singer, occupying a special place at the edge of his infamous “Rat Pack,” a gang of night-clubbing star entertainers who hung around Sinatra whenever their Vegas bookings overlapped. Rickles alone could turn on Sinatra – on television - and plant a big kiss on his lips while Sinatra convulsed in laughter and fought him off. You never saw Dino do that. For the past couple of decades Rickles traveled in a slower lane, touring with what became a celebration of midtwentieth century American humor, different than today’s rules that allows outright cruelty but often won’t touch

With the early 2014 release of Godzilla, America has started on a chain of Kaiju-themed movies to bring Godzilla and the gang back to life. This time, the great ape has his reawakening with the new movie Kong Skull Island. The movie starts in 1944 during WW I. American pilot Hank Marlow ( John C. Reilly) and Japanese pilot Gunpei Ikari (Miyavi) crash land on Skull Island, where they fight to the death. However, Kong appears and the screen cuts to black. Fast forward to 1973. Scientists Bill Randa ( John Goodman) and Houston Brooks (Corey Hawkins) are heading out to an uncharted island to gather information for their organization Project Monarch. In order to get there, they hire British Special Air Service Captain James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston), as well as the Sky Devils lead by Lieutenant Colonel Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson). They are also joined by a photographer named Mason Weaver (Brie Larson) who is convinced that the operation has a darker purpose. The team arrives on the island and drops ‘seismic charges’ into the ground. They soon learn that the entire earth underneath the island is hollow. However, a giant bipedal ape appears on the horizon and decimates the fleet, leaving little survivors. Their only hope is the resupply team that is coming in 3 days time. The survivors are then thrown into a harsh environment full of unknown creatures from enormous but docile water buffalos to spiders as tall as a 3 story house with legs that could impale a human like a shish-kebab. 70 ShopInRI
One group of survivors, including Conrad, Weaver, Brooks, biologist San Lin (Tian Jing), Slivko (Thomas Mann) and Victor Nieves ( John Ortiz) make it to a civilization where they meet the pilot Hank Marlow. He tells them about Kong, the god of the island. Hank also tells them that he’s the only one of his kind left. He tells them all about Kong and his role on the island, and what lurked below.Meanwhile, Packard and his men learn what the operation was really about, and Packard seeks Kong out for revenge. The two groups meet up and go in search of Major Jack Chapman (Tody Kebbell). What they don’t know was that a Skullcrawler, one of the underground monsters, killed him. They eventually run into the same Skullcrawler that killed Chapman. They eventually kill it and Packard attempts to go kill Kong, only to be stopped by Hank, James, and Mason. He ignores them and goes off, leading the movie into it’s final act. I thought Kong Skull Island was a really great movie. It was full of action as well as lots of drama and great character chemistry. The CGI was beautiful and the creatures that were designed for the movie were very interesting and fit the idea of a world never seen by humans. The character backgrounds were also well produced and well played. However, there were many plot holes that left me scratching my head. The movie was still very compelling and left me excited for what is soon to come. My favorite part was the after credits, which hint at other monsters like Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah. It was a really good setup for the 2019 movie Godzilla: King of Monsters. Overall, I give Kong Skull Island a 4 out of 6 diamonds.

Experience the difference between conventional and exceptional. By Susan Gazerro When I sat down with Attorney Frank Orabona, I was shocked to learn about the kid I knew from our childhood neighborhood. I knew who Frank was, but didn’t “know” him. His story more than impressed me. As a child, he lived on the third floor of a tenement house in South Providence, one of three children, born to parents who at the time, struggled financially; and in spite of this, or maybe because of it, Frank proved where drive and determination can take you. He must have told me a hundred times that his parents couldn’t give him the material things other kids had, but they gave him what truly matters. He feels his drive, perseverance and determination came from his dad. His father always told him that if you want respect, you give respect. His mom was a stay at home mother taking care of the family. She nurtured Frank, loved him, and taught him morals and values. She made his lunch from the first day of kindergarten until the day he finished law school. The lunch box became a paper bag, but it never stopped. His parents also taught him the importance of an education. College was not an option for these three children. Like it or not, they were going! Eventually, his family moved to Cranston, where at the age of ten, Frank sought out his first job. He had a paper route after school and delivered newspapers until he was 14. Then went on to work for Almacs Supermarket. During the summer when school was out, Frank worked three jobs- from 7am to 4 pm he would be at Almacs. He would then have an hour off to eat before heading to job number two at Subway, where he worked from 5pm to 8pm. He would then drive down the road to CVS, sleep in his car for three hours, and work at CVS from 11pm to 7am. In a 24-hour day, this kid was working 20 of those hours. As a child, Frank would hear his parents discussing money issues. He promised himself 74 ShopInRI

his life would be different. He didn’t want to have to worry or argue about money. He was adamant that by the time he was 30, he would be financially secure. He would be able to help his parents, his grandmother, and others in need. Prior to being financially secure, he was always the one to help someone in need. He volunteered to help the indigent at the Amos House. He also volunteered at the Adult Correctional Institution (ACI) and tutored the inmates to help prepare them for their GED tests. Fast forward to Frank graduating from high school and his decision to attend Providence College. It was then that the OJ Simpson trial was all over the news. Everyone was intrigued with the famous trial, but there was something deeper within Frank. This is what triggered his interest in law. Perfect timing. Frank now had focus and decided to major in Political Science and English, figuring this would best prepare him for law school. Frank told me he never considered himself the smartest kid or the best athlete. However, he succeeded because he would not take no for an answer, ever! There was that drive again, that burning flame inside of him. After taking an aptitude test, a guidance counselor once told him that he would one day make a good laborer or mechanic. Frank said, “Not that there’s anything wrong with either of those trades, but I was determined to do more. The fact I didn’t do that well on the test drove me to work harder.” He went on to say, and I quote, “This changed my trajectory.” His best friend during law school would study for a test for an hour and get an A. Frank would also do well, but he studied for hours. I think I was most impressed when he talked about his path after graduating. After law school, many of the students were landing jobs in law firms making $85,000 to $100,000 annually. Frank wanted to work for a high profile, well known attorney. Well, that attorney didn’t need help; so Frank offered to work for free just to learn from him. The attorney wouldn’t allow that so he gave him $200 per week.
Yes, unlike his classmates, Frank was making around $10,000 a year; but, he was envisioning “down the road”. He was looking at the big picture. He learned about different areas of law and was exposed to a variety of different types of cases. He credits his law firm, which practices everything from Criminal Law, Auto Accidents, Worker’s Compensation, Consumer Bankruptcy, Personal Injury, Family Law, Estate Planning, Real Estate, Collections, and Landlord/ Tenant Issues, to the fact that he worked for $200 per week, learning everything he could. Frank focuses on Criminal Law and Personal Injury, and his firm handles everything else. Frank built this firm himself, which now employs eighteen people, and they all have that tenacious, never give up attitude. It’s the energy in the firm which is why he has the reputation he does. Rachel In 1995, Liz and Audrey purchased the property at 401 Ten Rod Road in North Kingstown, RI. The first reasons were because it was available and affordable. They soon learned that it was a grandfathered farm, and as they had the back of the one acre property cleared, they recognized how perfect it was. Being a grandfathered farm meant that they could have animals. Due to their shared love of pigs, they started rescuing potbelly pigs. And that is how Smith & Agli’s Potbelly Manor was born. Upon my arrival at Potbelly Manor, I was greeted at the door by several cats enjoying some afternoon sunshine, and much to my surprise, a 180 lb St. Bernard named Heaven. Heaven is only 18 months old and seems to enjoy living amongst her pals on the farm. Do cats and dogs always get along with pigs? Liz and Audrey said that from their experience, pigs seem to get along very well with cats, but not so much with dogs. But there have been exceptions. When a prospective adopter comes to them wanting to adopt a pig, they ask what other kinds of animals are in the home. They also make a visit to assure that the pig will be going to a forever home, where it will be happy, safe and provided proper care. Pigs do make terrific pets when placed in the right environment with the right people. 78 ShopInRI
Ariel Here are some things you should know when considering adopting a pig: -Pigs are not dirty. -Pigs do not smell. -Pigs do not get fleas. -Pigs are very smart and get bored easily. So, they can get into some trouble. -It’s best to have an area in your home specifically for your pig to be contained while you are out. Potbelly pigs “root” and can open cupboards and move furniture. -Pigs can be trained similar to dogs. They can learn a routine in anywhere from one hour to a day. -Pigs can live 15-20 years. --Most importantly: There is no such thing as a micro, teacup or mini pig. Those are simply babies. An average potbelly pig grows up to 60 lbs. Only three have been at Potbelly Manor that remained between 2530 lbs. This is how elly pigs end up being surrendered to rescue groups. It’s a common misconception that they stay tiny.
Since 1995, Smith & Agli’s Potbelly Manor has rescued close to 1000 pigs, as well as and many other animals. There are currently several pigs on the farm. At the time I stopped by the farm to speak with Liz and Audrey, I met two of the rescued pigs. Rachel is a Yorkshire/Potbelly mix and weighs over 200 lbs. She lives in the first pen on the right when you enter the farm. She is like the farm’s welcoming committee. She is very vocal and loves attention. I was giving her scratches on the nose and she couldn’t seem to get enough! She has siblings there but they were in another pen towards the back of the farm, at the time of my visit. Ariel is a slender, black and white, Juliana Vietnamese potbelly pig; and she is the only pig on the farm that gets to go in and out of Liz and Audrey’s home. She interacts with the cats and the St Bernard. Ariel is also a registered therapy pig. She is famous around RI for visiting schools and senior living facilities. Liz and Audrey also shared with me, two of their favorite success stories: The Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), had actually taken a pig out of a home that they were working with and brought him to Potbelly Manor. They had never had that happen before. When they received the phone call, they thought

Patrick it was a joke. But it was very real and “Winston” ended up being cared for at the farm. A family wanted to adopt Winston, but Liz and Audrey were a little skeptical because they had already had a full grown Beagle. As they always do, they went to the home and did a complete check, and found that it was a perfect match. They just had to make sure Winston and the Beagle would get along. They introduced the two animals and it was love at first sight. The two quickly became best friends and Winston had a forever home! And then there was Agnes and Bella. A couple had come to the farm to see about adopting Bella. Sadly, Agnes had been abused and was found in the trunk of a car. She was afraid of everyone and everything. She had been at the farm for two years. Bella had been rescued by Defenders of Animals and brought to Potbelly Manor. Agnes and Bella were in separate pens but they could see each other. One day, Bella broke out of her pen and went to Agnes’ pen. It was immediately evident that they loved one another. Agnes was also going blind and Bella wound up being her eyes. They had been together for a year when the couple came to meet Bella, and saw how attached she was to Agnes. Consequently, they just

Why the Raiders Dumped Oakland for Vegas The NFL’s official statement of reasons why the Raiders are moving to Las Vegas, released Friday, won’t make Oakland football fans feel any better. And if they’ve listened to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s words on the move since it was approved by 31 of 32 NFL owners last month, they won’t be surprised by anything they read in the league’s release.
The statement of reasons clarifies the timeline of the application process that resulted in the Raiders’ move to Vegas being approved after they were denied a potential move to Los Angeles. Long story short: The Raiders

needed a new stadium in Oakland. Oakland failed to propose an adequate stadium solution. The Raiders tried to move to Los Angeles. The NFL said no to the L.A. move and gave Oakland its last chance. The NFL again didn’t like Oakland’s proposal. The NFL did like Las Vegas’ proposal. Here’s what the NFL said on the matter.
On March 27, 2017, League membership considered an application from the Oakland Raiders to relocate the club’s home territory to Las Vegas, where the club would play in a new stadium to be built through a publicprivate partnership. Under the League’s Policy and Procedures on Proposed Franchise Relocations (the “Guidelines”), the application was reviewed
by the NFL Finance and Stadium Committees. Prior to the member clubs meeting to consider the application, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a report addressing the factors identified in the Guidelines as relevant to the member clubs’ evaluation of proposed franchise relocations. The Commissioner and membership had found in 2016, in the context of considering an application by the Raiders to relocate to Los Angeles, that the Raiders’ current home stadium is not adequate for NFL football, and must be replaced, a conclusion agreed to by the civic leadership in Oakland. Notwithstanding the established preference for clubs to continue to serve their existing fans and communities, the member clubs concluded that the Raiders should be permitted to relocate from Oakland. This conclusion has not changed in the past year. Similarly, the Raiders are not barred by the club’s current lease from relocating to another community. For more than a decade, the Raiders have worked diligently and in good faith to improve the club’s stadium situation in Oakland. The NFL determined not to accept relocation applications prior to the 2015 season, and the Raiders were not permitted to relocate to Los Angeles prior to the 2016 season. This gave Oakland leadership additional time to address the Raiders’ acknowledged stadium issues. The NFL emphasized that the member clubs would be unlikely to accept contingent or uncertain stadium proposals
Raiders Owner Mark Davis as a basis for requiring a club that otherwise qualifies for relocation to remain in its home market. The stadium proposals received from Oakland are dependent on various contingencies and involve a number of significant uncertainties that the membership concluded cannot be resolved in a reasonable time. This is true even though the League has long accepted the community’s position that it will not invest public funds into stadium construction. The proposal to relocate to Las
Vegas involves a clearly-defined and well-financed proposal for a first-class stadium in a diverse and growing community that is wellrecognized as an entertainment destination. It offers the Raiders a genuine opportunity to resolve longstanding stadium issues and is expected to provide the club with solid future prospects. After full consideration, the membership approved the relocation of the Raiders’ home territory to Las Vegas.

In Greek mythology, spring festivals were held in honor of the maternal goddess called, Rhea. She was the wife of Cronus and was believed to be the mother of many deities. In 250 B.C., ancient Romans celebrated a spring festival called, Hilaria. This was dedicated to a mother goddess named, Cybele, on the Ides of March. Her followers would make offerings at the temple, hold parades, play games, and also have masquerades. It lasted three days. During the 1600s, in England, Mothering Sunday took place on the 4th Sunday of Lent. It began with a prayer service in honor of the Virgin Mary. Afterwards, children would present their moms with flowers. 92 ShopInRI
In 1870, a female activist, writer and poet by the name of Julia Ward (she wrote the “Battle Hymn of the Republic”) suggested a day of peace and strongly advocated other women to stand up against the war. From this plea, she was able to get Boston to recognize mothers on the second Sunday of June. More phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent. In the United States alone, around 122 million phone calls are made to moms on Mother’s Day. Modern day Mother’s Day was created by Ann Jarvis of West Virginia. Ms. Jarvis was a woman that may have been behind our traditional Mother’s Day celebration on the second Sunday of May. Anna never had any children, but wanted to carry out her own mother’s wishes of having a day just for moms. Anna tirelessly campaigned and on May 8th, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. There are more than 85.4 million mothers in the United States. Mother’s Day sees around one quarter of all flowers purchased throughout the year falling on this holiday.
