Pilot’s Fatal Mistake? Letting Dog Sit in Passenger Seat NTSB says pet likely hit controls, caused 2017 crash of small plane

A man’s decision to let his dog ride in the passenger seat of his small plane ultimately doomed him, the NTSB says in a new report on a 2017 plane crash. The single-engine airplane flown by Jerry Naylor, 90, a former commercial pilot, crashed into a cornfield 50 yards away from where he was trying to land—the runway at Iowa’s Monticello Regional Airport.

Naylor died, but his 70- to 75-pound dog survived—and in its report, the NTSB says “it is likely that the dog contacted the aileron and/or stabilator controls during landing, which resulted in the pilot’s loss of airplane 6 ShopInRI

There was no evidence the device interfered with the plane’s controls. As for the dog, it was treated for minor injuries.

Unsecured creditors had tried to block the sale, reports the AP, maintaining that Lampert was to blame for the company’s downfall.

Aussie dad fought off animals to save son

Rescue personnel say a father fought off several dingoes to save his 14-monthold son from one of the wild dogs that was dragging the boy from their camper van on an Australian island.

The boy had deep cuts on his head from the attack on Fraser Island in Queensland state, paramedic Ben Du Toit says. The family was sleeping when a dingo entered their camper van. Du Toit said the parents awoke to their son's cries, the sound fading as he was dragged away. The father ran outside and fought off several dingoes to rescue his son.

“He was apparently grabbed around the back of the neck area and dragged away. So, if it wasn’t for the parents and their quick thinking and fighting off the dingoes, he probably would have had more severe injuries,” said a pilot for RACQ Life Flight. Bertoli says the boy is the third child attacked by dingoes on Fraser Island this year.

CREPE CORNER

Crepe Corner is celebrating their two year anniversary. Since May 2017, owner, Natacha Legein has been serving up fresh, authentic Belgian crepes and waffles. The 33 seat café is tucked away just off of the main road behind A&W on Putnam Pike in Greenville. Upon entering, the smells of fresh baked pastries and other delectables take over your senses and make you want to stay a while. Maybe cozy up on the couch or a chair with a warm beverage and read your favorite book or meet with friends for lunch.

Learning to bake at a young age, her mother taught her what would unknowingly become her career. She is originally from Belgium. Her father had moved to the Congo for work and had soon met her mother. They were married and had four children, Natacha being the oldest. They moved back to Belgium and then again to the Congo before Natacha moved to the US at 19 years old. She worked hard while living in Massachusetts. She held three jobs and helped support her younger siblings beause she felt like a second mother to them. While working her third shift job, she moved to Rhode Island and met her husband. She honors her family and culture by serving the food she grew up with. Everything is made in-house and fresh from scratch.

Being able to open her own café has been a labor of love. Her and her husband put all of their money into it. Being a mother of three and one of her children 12 ShopInRI

being special needs, makes for long days, hard work, and “not much sleep”, laughs Natacha. Her son, who has Autism, was a very fussy eater and she was able to create foods that he really liked. That gift didn’t stop there. The customers have become regulars and are treated like friends and family.

Her mother, Chantal, also works at the café. Giving it that feeling of being home and working in the kitchen to create a family feast. Natacha and her mother want to keep the integrity of French/Belgian cuisine.

Fresh chicken is smoked daily. Pastry crème is made the same way her family made it when growing up. The hazelnut spread is made in-house from scratch. Natacha figures if she

can make it herself instead of buying it made, it’s better and more fresh.

It can also be made vegan which is something you don’t find everywhere.

Almost everything on the menu can be ordered regular, vegan, or gluten free.

Even local products from Stamp Farm and Jaswell farm are used daily to create the delicious pastries, crepes, waffles, paninis, and drinks.

Hearty crepes packed with fresh meats and/or vegetables are perfect for breakfast or lunch. Ham and Cheese, The Caprese (basil, tomatoes, and mozzarella) and the Vol Au Vent, a Belgian filling dish, and special sauce, mixed with chicken and mushrooms, is listed as a “MUST TRY”. Just reading the descriptions of the sweet crepes is enough to make your mouth water.

The Corner Crepe is filled with their special gingerbread paste and topped with salted caramel. Oh Sweet Berries is one of Natacha’s favorites. It’s filled with seasonal berries and topped with whipped crème. The Marco is filled with the house hazelnut spread. The Arianna is filled with hazelnut spread, and sautéed strawberries. Stop in to see what other selections are available. Authentic Liege waffles will fill you up. Deliciously sweetened with sugar pearls, you’ll want to make this a breakfast regular.

Maybe you just want something small with a unique, fresh hot or cold beverage? Sit and enjoy a pastry or take it to go. Crepe Corner offers espresso drinks that wouldn’t normally be found at your regular coffee shop. They even make their own chai.

Lavender mint latte is very popular hot or cold.

Marcarons are also a big hit! Natacha doesn’t like to make them all one color. She gets creative and makes works of art. Some are galaxies, marble, special shapes and seasonal choices. She does it all herself. You can order them online as well for special occasions.

CHUMLEY’S NATURAL KETCHUP

Unlike many entrepreneurs, Bob Riggs hasn’t set out to revolutionize the world or become a billionaire. The Tiverton-based and URI graduate simply wants to offer folks a better and tasty alternative to a common condiment usually found on most people’s shopping list.

Riggs who’s worked in corporate America for many years and has always enjoyed good food, tried to think of a way that he could develop a product that would be his own..

“I thought about mayonnaise and mustards,” he begins, adding that he researched several types of condiments from a business perspective before creating a product.

“I learned that 99 percent of households have a bottle of ketchup in the fridge,” he shares, adding that the popular condiment has many uses.

“I created various formulas in my home kitchen, experimenting with brown sugar, honey, agave and other products, and pure maple syrup proved to be a natural winner,” he continues. “Our ketchup has 50 percent less sugar than the leading national brand.”

“All I wanted was a ketchup with no high fructose corn syrup or refined sugar but finding it wasn’t easy,” Riggs continues. “I started making my own small batch, all natural ketchup so I could be assured that I could be assured that it was all natural and still had that perfect ketchup flavor. After many attempts, I finally hit on just the right recipe using Grade A maple syrup.”

Riggs adds that if he couldn’t find a delicious, naturally sweetened ketchup, many others, including people with various medical issues, would have the same problem.

“I decided to start my own ketchup company so others can enjoy an all natural ketchup, too,” he continues.

The busy businessman says that “Chumley’s Natural Ketchup” is named after a bumbling, bulbous walrus that appeared in the Tennessee Tuxedo cartoon series in the mid-60’s.

“Our ketchup is actually sweetened with pure maple syrup,” Riggs shares, adding that much of the syrup is harvested from trees grown within the state.

Riggs shares once he developed the formula, he thought he’d be able to produce the condiment in small batches in his home kitchen, something that he soon learned that he could not do once he spoke to officials from the state health department.

Natural Ketchup was introduced to customers,” Riggs tells, adding that the product was soon stocked at the market’s store in Smithfield. Riggs says that the flavorful condiment can enhance a Blood Mary, used as a base for cocktail sauce, added to and brushed on meatloaf, or topped on a burger or French Fries.

He adds that a local distributor is now carrying the product throughout the Ocean State while several others have inquired about selling the ketchup in other parts of New England.

With guidance from various state agencies, lots of practical advice from the small business incubator program at Hope and Main in Warren, Riggs was able to rent a commercial kitchen and start his company.

“I tested it on friends,” he continues, adding that several blind taste tests indicated that his product would become a winner.

Riggs notes in addition to comply with numerous health department regulations, additional obstacles included hiring a label designer, obtaining reasonably priced bottles and “learning by mistakes” as the project unfolded.

Last fall, Riggs participated in the Taste of Rhode Island at Dave’s Marketplace in Warwick.

CANTONESE DUCK

Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails This is basically my Cantonese chicken recipe, which I based on my love of Peking duck. But, for whatever reason, I never tried this recipe on duck before. Recently, I went home to Long Island to visit my Mom, and I stopped by one of the great food stores of my life: Miloski’s Poultry Farm in Calverton, NY. I’ve been coming to Miloski’s since I was a kid. My Dad would buy his ducks there and Grandpa Miloski, the guy that started it all, would serve us. Over the years, grandpa made way for his son, and now the son is retired and the grandson has taken over the business. All along the way, one thing hasn’t changed: the excellent quality of their product.

My uncle Antanas passed away years ago, but when it came to being a true foodie, this guy put all others to shame. Besides being the only hunter in our family (my first taste of venison was at his table) he had several huge freezers in the basement of his Richmond Hill, Queens, home back in the day.

He would drive to Miloski’s and buy 50 ducks at a time, and bring them home to freeze. Very often, after I finished Lithuanian school on a Saturday, my uncle would invite our family over for dinner, and we’d all sit around a massive table

where no less than 5 ducks would be cooked and served, along with all the fixings. That’s just a taste of my Miloski memories.

I try to stop at Miloski’s every time I pass through. I bring cash, because Miloski’s doesn’t take credit cards! I have a long ride home, first on the Cross Sound ferry from Orient Point to New London, CT…and then an hour-and-a-half on the highway from there. I bring a cooler and I buy a bag of ice along the way.

Miloski’s sells all kinds of exotic meats, like wild boar and ostrich.

But I go for their delicious kielbasa, pierogis, and now: duck!

Can you get salmonella from duck? In a word: depends! It used to be that salmonella was only found in the intestinal tracts of chickens. But because ducks are often raised in areas where chicken live, cross-contamination is very possible.

Even if the birds live totally separate lives, cross-contamination can also happen in slaughterhouses. So…despite the fact that many say you can eat duck meat that’s pink, I prefer not to. I’ll tell you this: there’s quite a bit of fat in an average duck, so even if you cook the bird to medium-well, it will be delicious and juicy….and the skin will be fantastically crispy.

Remove all the giblets from the bird and cook them up for your dog, like I do for my buddy, Fellow. (Leave out anything with bones, of course.)

Rub the soy sauce first all over the duck. (It will absorb the flavors better if you do it before you rub the bird with the oil.) Then rub the peanut oil all over the duck.

Combine the Chinese five spice, garlic, salt and pepper in a bowl. Season the entire bird, including inside the cavity, with this mixture.

Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Place the duck in a pan lined with aluminum foil (cleanup will be easier.)

Reduce the oven temperature to 250 once you put the duck in the oven, and then cook it low and slow for up to 4 hours…or more.

Combine the hoisin sauce and sesame oil in a small bowl.

When the duck is about 15 minutes away from being done, brush it with the hoisin/sesame oil mixture. Cook it another 15 minutes until the bird has a nice dark glaze.

Let the duck rest about 15 minutes before carving.

When entering certain restaurants, patrons can easily figure out what type of place they are.

Their décor may suggest fancy, fine dining or a fast-food establishment. Other times, it might not be so easy determining what motif a particular restaurant strives to achieve. They might want to become all things to all people or try appeasing a select clientele.

That was the vision of Owners Marc and Lea Berard and their son, Manager Philip Giguere, when they opened their doors four years ago.

“We wanted this place to have the look and feel of a place back then. We pride ourselves on making everything—including our sauces—from scratch. That helps make our food stand out.”

Another aspect of the restaurant that stands out is the décor. After Giguere’s parents purchased the former Tucks’ Restaurant, they went to work renovating the inside. Among the special features includes Marc Berard’s hand-stenciled ceiling tiles and special wall effects—such as the WANTED posters of some of

that era’s notorious gangsters. Also on the ceiling hanging above the bar are dozens of taps ready to be called upon as a weekly special.

He said their drinks give a nod to the 1920s. Specialty drinks range from the “Adeline’s Side Car” (Courvoisier, syrup, fresh-squeezed lemon, shaken and served in a sugar–rimmed martini glass w/lemon twist) to “Ward 8” (South Boston Irish Whiskey, orange juice, lemon juice and Grenadine, garnished with a Cherry and Lemon Twist). Adeline’s has an extensive wine and beer selection. He said the bar has up to 15 draft beers on tap weekly. They also change the beer choices weekly so customers will not get too complacent.

Their menu has odes to the local and professional sports teams. Diners can munch on burgers named “The Cumberland Hill” (based on the restaurant’s location), “The ‘Goat’ TB12” (self explanatory) and “Belisle’s Black and Blue (named for recently-retired Mount St. Charles Hockey Coach, Bill Belisle and his son, David, who coached the Cumberland Little League Baseball Team to the Little League World Series in 2014. David Belisle became well known for his now-famous post-game speech that aired on ESPN after Cumberland was eliminated from the tournament). For those looking for another option, customers can also feast on the “The BeliChick” chicken sandwich.

Their menu also features appetizers ranging from the “Clipper Cut” Chicken Wings (paying homage to the local high school team name) to “The Red Blissful,” which features four red bliss potatoes. There is also a kids menu with several favorites such as macaroni and cheese and hamburgers. Lunchtime offers a $10 special that includes a lunch entrée from a selection of 10 items, one side order and soft drink.

Giguere said there are other opportunities to join in the festivities.

“We offer a dinner for two on Tuesday nights. For $35, it comes with a bottle of wine two entrees, and appetizer. We have trivia on Monday nights, 50-cent wings entertainment on Saturday nights.

Also, we have a fantastic prime rib special that is the best deal in town. Customers can dine on a 16-ounce prime rib with two sides, beer or wine for $25. Again, everything is made from scratch, so people may have to wait a little longer, but the wait is well worth it.”

Adeline’s 100-seat restaurant is available for business meetings, social gatherings, events and other functions. Giguere said their 50-seat patio will be opening soon and can be a destination for meetings, events and other parties.

The restaurant is open on Monday from 4:00 PM to 12:00 midnight, Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 AM to 12:00 midnight, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 1:00 AM and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 12:00 midnight. In collaboration with Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island, the Westerly 350 Committee is proud to present a custom brewed beer in celebration of Westerly’s 350th year.

“Flying Horse Blonde Ale” was debuted at a private event on March 27 at Grey Sail and is now available to the public at the Westerly based brewery. “The beer can be described as a “5.5% American Blonde Ale brewed with 100% Cascade hops, lending towards a strong citrus fruit flavor and aroma. It also has a delicate Pilsner malt base, which leaves this beer with a beautiful golden color complemented by subtle Abbey malta providing a biscuity flavor and mouthfeel,” said Jennifer Brinton, owner of Grey Sail.

The beer was named after an iconic Westerly landmark, the Flying Horse Carousel in Watch Hill. It’s believed that the Watch Hill Carousel was originally madeconstructed in 1867 by Andrew Christian and Charles Dare Company of New York City. The story goes that a traveling carnival brought it to Watch Hill in 1883, but then abandoned it. It’s now said to be the only surviving flying horse carousel in the country and the oldest continuously operating carousel in the United States.

The brewery, located on Canal Street in Westerly, approached the committee with an opportunity to co-brand a specialty brew in honor of the celebration. 100%One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sales of this beer will go directly to the Westerly 350 Committee.

Strong Core Planks vs. Crunches

By Susan Gazerro: As a fitness instructor, I ask this question to all new clients: “What body part do you think I want to help you make the strongest?” The answers are always biceps, quads, stomach, lower back, etc. My response is, “No, I am most interested in strengthening your mind.”

When you have a strong mind, anything and everything is possible and doable. The second body part I want to make strong is the core.

When you have a strong core, all of the other muscle groups react in a positive way and they all work together. Having a strong core leads to stronger biceps, stronger legs, a stronger back, and an overall stronger body. Core refers to more than just your stomach. Core is from your neck to your waist front and back.

If you want to find the smartest way to work your abs while enjoying increased stability and decreasing the risk of injury that comes from a strong core, I’m hoping to shed some light.

Should you plank or should you crunch?

The crunch is a dynamic movement. It’s a spinal flexion – a forward bend of the spine. The plank is a static hold. An isometric contraction of the muscles of the spine.

What muscles do you work?

Both the crunch and the plank engage the rectus abdominis and the obliques. However, the plank also targets the erector spinae, the glutes, hip flexors, quads, and deltoids.

What are the benefits?

The crunch is great for isolated conditioning.

The plank provides increased activation of target muscles and functional strength benefits.

Science shows...

In 2013, the researchers explored which type of abdominal 32 ShopInRI

exercise – isolation or integration – provokes the greatest muscle activation. The study highlighted: A plank with hand reach gives 20 percent more rectus abdominis activation than a crunch.

A plank with a knee lift toward the opposite side of the chest increases rectus abdominis activation by 30 percent and external Oblique activation by 20 percent.

THE VERDICT The plank is the winner!

While crunches can work wonders for your core, the plank provides optimal results when it comes to aiding sports performance, rehab and general fitness.

So, if you really want to maximize the benefits of your core training, the increased muscle activation you get with a plank means it’s the way to go.

There are times, however, that you should choose crunches over planks. If you have weak wrists or shoulders, choosing to challenge your core with crunches may be a better option. You can support

your neck with your hands, while eliminating pressure of the wrist and shoulder.

Technique tips: During crunches, it can be tempting to place your hands behind your head. As I just mentioned, it’s okay to support your neck, but don’t use your hands to pull you up. This causes you to pull forward on your head. You should also always keep your chin tucked.

If during a plank your butt is too high in the air, the effectiveness of the plank will be reduced. To get the most from this movement, you need to keep your body in a long straight line and make sure your butt is down just slightly above your hips. If you’re new to planking, it is suggested that you start by aiming for three 30 second holds. When you’re ready to increase the intensity, add knee lifts and hand reaches. You can also start in a plank position and touch your knees down to the mat or floor alternating each knee for approximately 15 sets. There are so many different planks you can do, which will engage different

muscles groups along with the core.

Bottom line, core should be priority.

My personal opinion is planks are more beneficial and less injury prone. I understand crunches and sit-ups have been a “forever” core movement, however, planks add so much more. Crunches do not strengthen your lower back.

Planks do! Planks are a “progressive overload” exercise.

Crunches are not. More research is showing planks are the number one core exercise. Start slow. Hold a plank as long as you can, adding a few seconds each time you hold it. Your goal is a 30 second hold three times a day.

You need to work on your body every day. Love your body every day. This should be priority. You take care of everything else in your life. Your body and health should be number 1.

Unfortunately there are way too many false ideas about losing weight/building muscle etc. If you’ve been working out for a little while now then you’re probably familiar with many of the ridiculous myths that are floating around out there. For those of you that are just starting out, it’s important for you to know some of the things you hear may not be true. Some of this bad information may even prevent you from getting your best results. Let’s go over some of the common myths I hear.

Myth #1 Lifting weights will make you big I honestly still can’t believe that people still think this is accurate. In order to get “bulky” it takes a lot of heavy lifting and a lot of eating. Unless you are purposely trying to gain a large amount of muscle mass, it’s not gonna happen. Weight training should be included in everyone’s workout plan. Strength training burns fat, improves posture, makes you stronger, increases metabolism, potentially prevents osteoporosis, and makes you feel great.

If that’s not enough motivation for you, I don’t know what is. Seriously though, it’s super important to have a balanced exercise plan and strength training is a key component. If anyone ever tells you weight lifting is only for men, you need to fill them in on the facts.

Myth #2 Crunches are the only way to work your abs.

Crunches are fine to include in your workouts but this exercise is only working one part of your entire core.

The core is basically everything between the bottom of the chest down to the top of your legs. Strengthening the entire core is the only way to achieve desired results.

Without getting too technical about it, a strong core is important for many reasons other than looking good. If

looking good is your only goal that’s fine, just do it the right way. Exercises that strengthen the abdomen and other core muscles include planks, squats, sprints, high knees, Supermans, side planks, jack knives, wood chops... the list goes on. My point is there are so many other highly efficient ab workouts than just crunches.

Myth #3 Working your abs will give you a flat stomach.

While all of the exercises I listed in #2 are excellent ways to strengthen your core and burn calories, exercise alone will not give you the results you’re looking for. If you’ve ever heard the phrase “abs are made in the kitchen” you probably realize that what you eat has the most affect on getting leaner. In order to achieve fat loss you need to have a good nutrition plan in place. Eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies, while food sources of proteins and carbohydrates, healthy fats, minimal sugar, and minimal alcohol. This is the most challenging but also the most rewarding.

Myth #4 You need to workout for a certain amount of time If you’ve read any of my other articles, or trained with me than you know I do not believe that long workouts are necessary for most people. Hour long workout sessions are for people who are lifting extremely heavy weights and require much longer recovery time in between sets. Also maybe if you’re training to be a movie super hero, but us common folk just need about 20-40 minutes of effective exercise 3-5 times a week. Again as I’ve said before pair this with a good nutrition plan and you’ll be on your way to keeping the weight off for good and creating a healthy, sustainable routine. A mix of cardio, strength training, and flexibility throughout the week. In my opinion a 15 minute workout is better than no workout. I think most of us realistically have at least 25 minutes a day to squeeze in a workout. Even if you just take a walk on your lunch break that’s already doing something great for your body.

Myth #5 You have to use supplements The supplement industry is a billion dollar industry, there are so many on the market now there are too many for me to go over with you. Simply put you don’t need them. I am not saying that they can’t be beneficial because I personally use supplements and they are a great addition to my routine.

Although they can be helpful it doesn’t mean that you need them. Everything your body needs can be found from whole food sources. Eating a balanced diet will give you the fuel you need to power through your workouts. Never deprive yourself of food to lose weight, it will always backfire. Most of my clients are surprised by the amount of food they can eat when you’re eating- Providence the right foods.

Melina Cortes-Nmili is trying to do a better job at balancing her life and spending more time with her family these days. As a “type A” healthcare executive and founder of the Lalla Bee clothing line, she has often found herself wanting to be everything for everyone – which she admits is the easiest way to get drained… it never fails. Below is a day in the life of a woman who is trying to find balance in what she loves to do.

A few weeks ago, I submitted a day off request. That same day I promised my five-year-old son Omar that I would take him to New York so he could help me go fabric sourcing. I usually drive to New York or take the train and make it a one-day trip; this time since Omar was joining, I figured we could spend some time together and make it an overnight trip. Omar loves planes… so of course now, I need to find a decently priced plane tickets to NYC. 38 ShopInRI

A DAY IN THE LIFE 6:00 AM - The kid who usually takes 30 minutes to wake

up to go to school is wide awake and waiting for me in his room. I was surprised to find him wide awake as I was expecting some type of negotiation to take place to get him out of bed an hour earlier than most days. We were both excited; fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do, and anytime I get to bring my family along to any work related trip or event, it automatically does not feel like work.

7:30AM

- We got to the airport with enough time to have breakfast – so we did.

8:30AM - Boarding was uneventful, but I always get ner-

vous when I fly. The process of boarding does very little to ease my anxiety. Once I am sitting down, coat off and book in hand, I am finally able to relax. Today, of course, I am having to entertain a guest who is way more excited and talkative than I need him to be this early in the morning.

9:00AM - We take off and the short flight starts off very

uneventful. Omar is typically a very shy kid, but this changed when he saw two pilots sitting behind us and asked me out loud (and in shock) who was flying the plane?! I think I have passed my anxiety onto him because as we were about to land, he asked me to hold his hand because he was feeling afraid. I remember feeling somewhat guilty.

10:30AM - Around this time, we are landing and getting

into an Uber vehicle to go from La Guardia to the Garment District to meet with my first appointment. Today was supposed to be JUST about fabric, but I had to re-arrange the schedule last minute to make time for an 11am meeting with a new showroom. And of course, I’m running late.

11:45AM - We finally get to the showroom and silly me

thought this would be a quickie – maybe thirty minutes.

I am there for about an hour a half. Fully aware that my schedule has gone to shit, this is an important meeting, so I don’t rush it. We discuss everything we need to discuss and by the end, I have a new home in New York! While in the showroom, I frantically text everyone I am supposed to be meeting that day to let them know I am running an hour behind. I had a total of 5 appointments scheduled.

2:00PM - We arrive at our first fabric appointment. It goes by pretty quickly, as I did not see much that I would be interested in for the Spring 2020 collection.

2:30PM - Head over to my second appointment – and I knew I was going to spend a good hour here, as this is the agent with the mills where I purchased most of my fabric.

Thankfully, Omar is cooperating. I have a carry-on full of snacks, and everywhere we go, someone offers him water or juice, so no need to stop for lunch. I look at my swatches, make my selections and off we go.

3:45PM - While walking to my third appointment, I get

a text from another mill saying they would be able to meet me tomorrow at 9am at my hotel. I breathe and agree!!! At the same time, I get an email from an agent I really wanted to go see letting me know we will have to reschedule because he has to head to the airport.

4:00PM - I make it to what is now my last appointment

for the day just in time, as they close at 5:00. I was the only customer there, so it was great just sitting down and taking my time browsing through the swatches of fabrics at my own pace.

5:00PM - Omar and I leave the last appointment and walk towards Time Square to have lunch/dinner. By now we are both tired; I can see his hands are dirty from touching everything and we make it to our destination. Sushi heaven!

We sit – I take him to the bathroom to wash his hands and we proceed to have a very nice two hour meal. I had sashimi and Omar had rice and chicken. He asked me since we were traveling together and it was special occasion if it was ok for him to have soda and I agreed. I had a couple of beers and kicked back for a bit; we called my husband and I asked for the check.

8:00PM - We arrive at our hotel in Brooklyn and Omar

had been asking if we could go swimming all day. By now, I am exhausted. Thank God for the pseudo basketball court the hotel installed in the lobby because while I made the line and checked in, Omar had a good ten minutes of nonstop jumping and running around trying to score.

8:30PM - We get to our room with some snacks in case

we get hungry later – we both shower and jump into bed.

We call my husband and Sofia to say good night, and Omar and I chat about the day. He hugs Mr. Macaroni and places his head on my arm, and I watch the Golden Girls until I drift off to sleep.

OFFERS CUSTOMERS ANOTHER OPTION Owner Brooke van Eeghen has traveled the world serving her country and others.

By Mark Berger Look up “Dedication to Service,” and there is a good chance a picture of Brooke van Eeghen is located right next to that phrase.

Before opening the doors to van Eeghen Pharmacy on Oaklawn Avenue in Cranston last July with a dream of helping others and using her experience in the pharmaceutical field, van Eeghen proudly served in the United States Air Force for eight years. Not only has she travelled the world and seen/done some worthwhile things, she is also fiercely loyal to maintaining the small business model.

“There are not many family-owned pharmacies in the area anymore,” said van Eeghen. “Phred’s Drugs was located down the street. They recently closed after being in business for 60 years. A lot of those customers who went there to have their prescriptions filled and receive information came to us for their health-related needs.”

One way van Eeghen helps out local businesses is devoting a section for “Shop Rhody.” There are several lo-

cally-owned companies that currently sell their products. Items now on their shelves range from Veteran’s Coffee (with a portion of the proceeds going to veteran’s causes) to Rhode Island Soaps and Aquidneck Island Honey. Van Eeghen said it’s important to have smaller, lesser known people have a chance to demonstrate what they can do.

What van Eeghen Pharmacy also does—besides advocating for small businesses and filling prescriptions—is having a family-feeling when customers arrive. They are a team of a half-dozen full and part-time employees that want to help their customers get the help they need.

Not having a corporate backing enables the pharmacy to offer services that the bigger, more established entities either cannot or do not offer, according to van Eeghen.

“We offer free delivery for prescriptions and pill packs that contain the medications patients take without forgetting what they need,” she said. “We work to make

Brooke Van Eeghen was born in Almeida, CA but grew up in Cranston. She is married to husband, Rich Wallace, and they have two daughters. She also has a 26-year-old son. She noted how when she had her son at a young age how people thought her life was over. Not so, she said. “It actually lit a fire under me to prove anyone who thought that about me was wrong.” the customers feel comfortable here. They are coming for what they need and getting the one-to-one service they might not receive at a bigger chain.”

If the van Eeghen name sounds familiar, then it should, if people are football fans. Brooke’s father, Mark, was not only a stand out for Cranston West High School, but was also a member of the Oakland Raiders Super Bowl XI (1977) and Super Bowl XV (1980) teams. He played on the New England Patriots from 1982-1983.

She noted that while her dad shies away from the spotlight, being able to lend a hand now and then has helped.

“I was going to prove to them and myself that I was going to make something of myself.”

Brooke van Eeghen described her father as a “workhorse,” but is very humble. It was Mark’s mother that served in the Army Air Corps and later became Brooke’s inspiration to serve.

“I wanted to follow in her footsteps. She was my role model. I wanted to serve my country and saw an ad in Monster (when the on-line job site service was popular) for people to join the Air Force. It was an awesome experience across the board getting to see and live in those different cultures,” she said.

Her military service has also aided in her success. She served at Hansom Air Force Base in Lexington, Massachusetts for two before serving in Okinawa, Japan for three years before ending up at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. Van Eeghen said the experiences in helping the pharmaceutical aspects of that branch created a sense of duty and responsibility toward others. She is currently enlisted in the Air Force as a Reserve.

For example, if a person wants to get protection to cover a mortgage, a Term policy most likely would be a low-cost option to provide a benefit in case of a person passing away during the term. However, a policy like that would not be a good choice if the goal was to leave it behind as a legacy gift. Q: I have a Medicare plan that includes my prescription drug coverage. Can I get another prescription drug plan to help offset the cost of my more expensive prescriptions? a: Medicare Prescription Drug Plans known as Part D are administered through a separate independent Part D provider or included in a Medicare advantage plan (Part C) similar to the one you are in now. If you have a Part C plan, which provides both your health and prescription drug coverage, then you can’t sign up for a stand-alone Part D plan without giving up your health benefits included in the plan. Essentially, you must decide to get your coverage either as an independent plan or through Part C of Medicare. In some cases you are allowed to have additional coverage but not under the Medicare umbrella.

For example, you can have a Part D plan and Va benefits or, if you qualify, you can have a Part D plan and get Extra Help (although not a plan) from federal or state programs to help reduce your out-of-pocket prescription costs.

HOW A STRONG, SUPPORTIVE BOSS HELPS YOU

One of the most important qualities of a leader is resilience. Today’s leaders are barraged with roadblocks, let-downs and failed attempts at success. The true grit of a leader is not how he or she performs during the good times, but rather, how he or she displays emotional strength, courage and professionalism during the most trying times.

Teams rely on leaders to be strong, composed and to focused on the intended goals. Teams need influential people to not only reflect any of the negativity surrounding them, but, to also frame the chaos as an opportunity for everyone to grow. Teams need a leader who will support them and listen to their concerns, but not allow them to stray from the goals of the organization.

That is how and where Mary T. O’Sullivan, MSOL, ICF-PCC, SHRM-SCP, EAPA, can be helpful. Her work focuses on research based on veterans, holocaust survivors and at-risk children, to female professionals; they learned from their difficulties and shared common traits. Researchers identified six areas that all of them seemed to exhibit time after time to build resiliency from staggering tragedy.

Mary T. O’Sullivan “Have you heard of the boy with the absent father and alcoholic mother? He came to school every day with a “bread sandwich,” two pieces of bread with nothing in between. His teacher noticed the boy wanted to make sure no one would feel pity for him, and no one would know the failures of his mother. Each day, without fail, he would walk into school with a smile on his face and a “bread sandwich” tucked into his bag,” O’Sullivan explained.

“All of these people faced crippling, devastating mental and physical trauma, but managed to raise themselves up beyond survival into thriving and meaningful purpose,” O’Sullivan continued. “They see themselves as orchestrators of their own fate. One study showed that these people scored more than twice higher than the control group on being resilient.”

O’Sullivan’s work also centers on capturing that indefinable quality enabling some people who get knocked down by life and come back at least as strong as before, if not even better. “Rather than letting difficulties or failure overcome them and drain their resolve, they find a way to rise from the ashes,” according to O’Sullivan.

“Now we know that there is no test for resiliency, and that resiliency depends on the way one’s life unfolds. In fact, most people don’t even know if they are resilient until hard times come along,” O’Sullivan noted.

“What we’ve learned is that that teaching people to reframe the events in positive terms when the initial response is negative, or in a less emotional way when the original response is emotionally ‘hot’— changes how people experience and react to an emotionally charged situation,” she said.

O’Sullivan said that people learn from their mistakes by framing adversity as a challenge. People become more flexible and able to deal with it, move on, learn from it, and grow as a result. Dwell on it, frame it as a threat, and a potentially traumatic event becomes a lasting problem; causing them to become more inflexible—and more likely—negatively affected. She said that resiliency is ultimately a set of skills that are not natural to us, but can be taught.

She added that effective leaders learn to cultivate a strong sense of strength and self-confidence. They develop a deeper sense of due diligence to prepare themselves for the leadership duties they need to carry out. An equally-important element of self-confidence is that of self-awareness. Effective leaders are aware

of their own strengths and weaknesses and know when it is time to delegate responsibility to others who are better qualified to accomplish specific responsibilities.

“Leaders need to learn to face adversity with patience and perspective,” O’Sullivan added.

“Resiliency does not come through some mystical formula, but comes as leaders begin to take each challenge in life as a learning experience, and as they learn to pick themselves up and keep going each time a new difficulty comes their way,” O’Sullivan said.

Whether it’s Home Improvement, Fashion, Automobiles, etc., trends come and go and usually come back around again.

What seems to me to be the next big thing in Home Improvement appears to be anything that can function off of an app from a Smart Phone.

One good example of this in Home Improvement is residential wallpapered walls.

This phenomenon has been gaining steam for several years now.

It seems that by the day, more and more home improvement functionality has been able to be controlled by apps. Whether it is opening your garage doors as you are pulling up to your home, controlling your home’s heating/cooling system from far away, or monitoring your home through a surveillance equipment app while vacationing on a Caribbean island, the only limit appears to be the imagination!

Wallpapering one’s walls used to be enormously popular, as there was quite a long period of time where you would be hard pressed to walk into someone’s home without seeing some type of wallcovering somewhere, if not throughout the home.

In the last few decades, wallpapering in the home has seemingly lost its luster as more and more homeowners were opting for removing the wallpaper and painting the walls (with few exceptions... a bathroom perhaps) In recent years, however, wallpaper is making a bit of a comeback, as more and more people are incorporating wallcovering back into their home. The challenge now is that because of its decrease in demand, there are very few folks who know how to properly hang it in residential settings – I am fortunate that we are one of the outfits that has kept this unique skill up.

That is an example of a trend. Something that was popular at one point, died down and then is coming back around again.

What about the“Next Big Thing?”

Between trade shows, relationships with vendors and real field observations, I see many new and exciting things that are always popping up in our industry.

Just as UBER and the like have dramatically changed the transportation industry, Home Improvement apps are “chomping at the bit” Tom Lopatosky has run to affect their industry as his own carpentry and painting well. There are companies business in Providence since in EVERY industry aiming 1995; LOPCO Contracting – to be the next “UBER.” While I have not found a singular app that can claim this clear cut title in our industry, I can say with great confidence that app development, and its penetration into Home Improvement across the board, is absolutely the “Next Big Thing,” and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.

MOVIE REVIEW Avengers: Infinity War's cliff-hanger ending left me devastated, but highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame, picks up the pieces of that story with a completely satisfying conclusion that winds down over a 10 years of movies.

Directors Anthony and Joseph Russo have made a three-hour epic that flies by, just like Infinity War did in 2 hours and 40 minutes. Yet Endgame multiplies the scale tenfold. Adding Captain Marvel to the lineup of familiar faces, it has way more heroes, way more destinations and way more complexity. (For a spoiler-filled take on the film, read my colleague Rich Trenholm's review.)

Last year's Infinity War revolved around bad guy Thanos' quest to "balance" the universe by wiping out half of all life with the snap of his finger (aka The Snapture). Endgame brings the focus back to the surviving Avengers as they fight to resurrect the lost.

The shift in focus brings a change in tone, marked by the camaraderie between Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and the rest of the heroes who headlined 2012’s The Avengers. The villain-focused Infinity War was dark and deadly. With the likes of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man on board, this one goes lighter as it turns toward the heroes with plenty of humor and even some absurdity mixed in with the heartbreak and dizzying action sequences.

Endgame is the end of an era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe,

Avengers: Endgame and it serves as a giant sequel to every MCU movie ever.

Thankfully an in-depth knowledge of all 22 earlier films isn’t essential. The plot does jump around at times, which might confuse casual viewers, but bottom line: This thrill ride kicks off big and never lets up. It’s so much fun.

Now that half the cast is out of the picture, the core Avengers and other surviving characters get more room for character development. The film dives into each hero’s motivations and history -- especially important since this could be the final adventure for some of the longer-serving actors.

Standout Johansson dazzles, as Natasha Romanoff becomes a true leader who by Endgame sees Stark, Rogers and all the other heroes as a family she must protect. This Natasha is a far cry from the agent who feared the leak of her dark history in the past seven MCU films she’s starred in. Endgame sets her up well for her highly rumored solo film.

Her stories get further amplified by the return of Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton, who embraces both his darker Ronin identity seen in recent trailers and his archer skills as Hawkeye.

Barton didn’t make an appearance in Infinity War, and his return here both evolves the desperation the heroes are facing while giving audiences a return to the close friendship Romanoff and Barton have shared since 2012’s Avengers.

Downey Jr. and Evans also get arcs showcasing the evolution of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers -- fitting since the former kickstarted the MCU with 2008’s Iron Man and the latter is the first Avenger. The movie wastes no time pairing the two back up despite Stark being last seen stranded in space, and gives audiences the chance to see how strong they are working as partners instead of rivals as established in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Of the core characters, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner take over the more absurd side of the story. In one way it’s fitting, considering the more comedic take both characters have moved toward since 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. Yet of the arcs given to the original Avengers, theirs feels less epic due to their comic roles. Their antics are welcome, though at times their scenes feel a bit cringeworthy considering the overall effort to save lives.

How to Create a Wedding Budget You and Your Finances Will Love If you’re planning a wedding – whether it’s your own or your child’s – and haven’t been paying close attention to the wedding industry, you may experience sticker shock as you begin calculating costs.

An average American wedding costs the newlyweds and their families just under $34,000 — and that’s without the honeymoon tab.1 Here is a list of tips to help you plan a wedding that works for your taste and your wallet: Discuss expectations. The bride, groom and parents on each side may each have different thoughts about the ideal wedding.

If you’re the bride or the groom, talk with your partner about what aspects of the wedding are most important to you. If you’re a parent, talk openly with the couple to hear their expectations.

Decide on a location. Do you have your heart set on a destination wedding? That’s great, as long as you’re prepared to incur the added expense of airfare and accommodations (and manage the logistical challenges of long-distance event planning). However, it’s common for destination weddings to have a smaller guest list, which may help balance the budget.

Set your guest list early. The size of your wedding guest list impacts many wedding decisions: how large of a ceremony and reception space you need, the per person amount you will spend on catering and beverages, how much it will cost to mail out save the dates and invitations, and more. Generally speaking, the larger your wedding guest list the more expensive the day will be.

Determine who’s paying for what. It’s important to have a frank conversation as early as possible to clarify who plans to contribute and how much. If you are receiving a check from another wellwisher be clear on what, if any, expectations are tied to the money given. It’s common for others to want a say in the wedding decisions if they’ve contributed financially. Being clear up front may eliminate awkwardness tied to the gift down the road.

Set a budget. Regardless of who is paying, couples need to identify a wedding budget before working out the details. Allocate your dollars based on what is most important to you. Is your dream dress or venue nonnegotiable for you? If so, think about what it means for the rest of your budget. Having clear priorities can help you confidently spend on your dream items while trimming costs in areas you care less about.

Research vendors. It’s common for wedding vendors (e.g. videographers, caterers, florists) to have many tiers of service to cater to a variety of wishes – and budgets. Do your research and compare costs before signing contracts so you know what is reasonable. Get all agreements, requests and decisions in writing, even if the vendor seems open and easy to work with.

Manage cash flow. Cash flow can be tricky, even when your finances are in great shape. Ensure you understand how each vendor expects to be paid so you can plan your budget accordingly. Some expenses may need to be paid in full to book the services, while others may require a down payment or payment in installments leading up to the wedding.

Don’t forget other wedding events. Are you planning other wedding events, such as an engagement party, wedding shower, bachelor and bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner or gift opening

the day after the nuptials? If so, it’s important to add these to your budget. It’s traditional for parents on both sides and your wedding party to contribute or take care of the costs for these events, but every family and situation is different.

Communicate openly and be prepared to foot the bill (or parts of it) if your vision is more than the host is willing to pay.

Put the wedding in perspective. Couples beginning a life together will likely have other financial goals, such as paying off student loans, a new car purchase or a down payment on a home. Discuss the priority and ideal timeframe of your goals to know when financial obligations are due (if you’re a parent, determine if and how much you’ll help). Then, consider how your wedding budget fits in to those other priorities. Consider working with a financial advisor who can provide an objective look at your financial picture.

Hire a professional wedding planner. If you don’t enjoy rigorous planning, or can’t afford the time it takes, consider hiring a wedding planning professional. While it is an added cost, the right planner will work within your budget to obtain the best vendors and help coordinate the big day.

Responsible Pet Care Tips

As a pet parent you want to do everything you can to care for your pet; this involves regular, everyday activities to ensure they stay happy and healthy. Practice these ten responsible pet care tips year after year for a lifetime of happy and healthy cats and dogs.

1. Veterinarian Visits Responsible pet ownership starts with regular visits to the veterinarian. Given their shorter-than-human lifespan, your dog or cat should be getting a checkup at least once or twice a year. Depending on your pet’s vaccination schedule, they may go more frequently when they’re young, but establishing and maintaining good pet health means keeping up with vet visits as they age.

Dogs tend to like going for car rides. Take your pup on joyrides, so he won’t associate getting into the car with going to the vet. And many pets don’t mind a trip to the veterinarian’s office, especially if you choose a vet that’s a good fit for your little friend.

2. Vaccinations Vaccinating your pets is a vital component of responsible pet care. Soon after welcoming your new pet into your home, schedule an immunization appointment. During your first visit, the vet will set up an immunization schedule for your little pup or kitten to protect them from illness and disease.

Vaccinations for puppies should happen early in your puppies first few weeks after you bring him home. Talk to your vet at your first appointment, on when a good time to schedule that visit. They help prevent diseases such as rabies, Lyme disease, and distemper. Cats benefit from vaccines that prevent feline herpes virus, feline leukemia, and rabies. If you’ve adopted an adult or senior animal, make sure they are immunized, too.

Vaccinations do need renewal and aren’t just for young pets.

3. Proper Identification If the unthinkable happens and your little guy or gal gets lost — youngsters in particular are prone to dashing out the door — having proper identification is the key to a happy ending.

Start with the basics: a safe collar, and a tag that contains all of your contact information. In addition to an ID tag, microchipping your pet is advisable, because there’s always the chance a collar will fall off. The microchip, an electronic device about the size and shape of a grain of rice, is implanted under your pet’s skin and can be read by a scanner that pulls up your identification information. A combination of these forms of identification will go a long way to reuniting you and your beloved pet, but only if you keep your contact information up-to-date. Be sure to change your information on file with the microchip if you have a change in address or phone number.

4. Spaying/Neutering Sterilizing your pet prevents a host of health problems, including complicated pregnancies, and reduces the number of homeless animals. Spaying your kitty (removing the uterus and ovaries) greatly reduces her risk for cervical cancer, eliminates the risk of ovarian cancer, and prevents her from 60 ShopInRI

going into “heat.” That minimizes the chance that she’ll stray from home in search of a partner, and any nearby male cats will be less aggressive (and they won’t spray to mark their territory, something that benefits you and your furniture).

Neutering your puppy helps alleviate aggression and roaming the neighborhood, and will prevent him from getting testicular cancer. Because spaying or neutering is surgery that requires general anesthesia, your pet will likely stay overnight at the vet’s office for at least one night for observation and recuperation.

5. Healthy Food Two connected elements of responsible pet ownership include providing animals with fresh, cool water and healthy food at all times. The right pet food will enrich your best buddy’s life, providing them with the energy and nutrients they need. With so many meal options to choose from, it can be daunting, but you can become adept in no time by familiarizing yourself with important ingredients and how they help your pup or kitty. When choosing the best cat food, look for a good balance of protein, carbs and fats. These are important ingredients for dog food, too, as is plenty of fiber for the digestive system.

7. Comfy Quarters As the seasons change or you rearrange your living space, take a look around to see that you’re providing your pet with a safe, cozy habitat. Dog bed looking a little flat? Buy your pup a new one. Litter box area not cutting it anymore?

Spruce up your kitty’s bathroom with a new box and scoop.

This also is a good time to check for potential hazards. Look for exposed cords or wires (young animals find these to be great chew toys), secure safety gates, repair loose windows or screens and remove any plants that are poisonous to your pet.

8. Training and Socializing One of the most important aspects of responsible pet care is ensuring your dog or cat is well-trained, and proper socializing is a part of that. Starting when they’re young is best and most effective, but it’s never too late to learn new tricks. Toilet training is the number one priority for any animal with whom you share your home, as is working on obedience training. Learning socialization skills will help your puppy or kitten bond with you and with other pets.

DUANE BOUCHER TAKES THE NORTHERN RI REAL ESTATE MARKET BY STORM

After 21 years of helping home buyers and sellers achieve their goals, Duane Boucher of Boucher Real Estate can lay claim to being one of the best REALTORS® in Northern Rhode Island—and he has the accolades to prove that. Boucher was recently named the Top Individual Producer by the Northern RI Board of REALTORS® for the third straight year—and the fifth time in the last decade. The award is based on 2018 sales production and a distinction that he takes very seriously.

“I joke that I’m trailing Tom Brady by just one win, and my certificates aren’t as nice as his rings, but other than that we’re almost identical,” said Boucher, who won in 2009, 2011, 2016, 2017 and 2018. “No matter how good you are, without the right team to help you perform at your best, you cannot achieve greatness.”

Boucher is quick to acknowledge the successes of each of the other 10 agents at his firm and proudly notes that most of them were also recipients of REALTOR® awards at the Board’s annual celebration held this past March at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln.

“In fact, four of our agents recently received the 5-Star Award for quality of customer service in real estate; an award bestowed on only 5% of REALTORS® in the state,” he said.

The Boucher Real Estate team services residential and commercial clients in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and promote their goal of “Helping our clients make all the right moves”. They have a wealth of experience selling a wide variety of properties including existing homes, condos, multi-family properties, land and new construction developments. Boucher adds, “We’re always trying to stay ahead of the market trends and utilize the latest technology and the most effective marketing strategies to give our clients every advantage possible.”

Boucher states that although 2018 started strong, it finished fairly flat—giving many reason to believe that the market was 66 ShopInRI

due to turn south for 2019. “I’ve been bullish about the 2019 market for many reasons and after wrapping up Q1, it has become clear that the real estate market is on fire,” he said.

In just three months this year, Boucher helped clients close on just shy of $5 million worth of real estate, and his pending pipeline is already more than twice that amount. “Prices are climbing and sellers who heed their agent’s recommendations on staging, pricing and marketing are being rewarded handsomely,” he points out.

Boucher followed his father, John’s footsteps into a career in real estate. “I grew up around the business,” he says. “My dad was a carpenter turned homebuilder and his philosophy was that if I wasn’t in school, I should be at work.”

He attended school at Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket and then Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts, where he majored in both Real Estate and Finance. “The first few years were pretty rough” said Boucher. “It was very difficult to start out so young and so broke. I guess I had nothing to lose and nowhere to go but up.”

After 21 years of devotion, his business is now booming. In addition to brokering his own sales, he manages the other agents in the office, collaborates with builders and developers on new projects, and has amassed a collection of investment properties to secure his future.

The majority of clients the Boucher team acquires are now the direct result of repeat business or referrals from past clients. Boucher states, “We take our client relationships very seriously. If we focus on doing our job well we will earn the

future business of our clients; rather than have to chase down online leads”.

And in light of his busy schedule, he has somehow found time to contribute back to the REALTOR® organization that has given him so much. Boucher has served on numerous Board committees and currently serves on its Board of Directors. He served a two-year term as President of the Statewide Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in 2016/2017. Under his oversight, the RI Association of REALTORS® completed a major MLS software conversion, re-designed its publicfacing RILiving.com website, and instituted several policy updates. He currently serves as Chairman of the MLS Advisory Group. Boucher was one of the founding members of the REALTOR.com Real Ambassador Program and was recently appointed to a three-year term as the Rhode Island Representative to the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Professional Standards Committee.

He will travel this May to Washington, D.C. for his first committee meeting with a second scheduled this November in San Francisco.

For his devotion to the REALTOR® organization, his peers named him the RI REALTOR® of the Year for 2017. A once-in-a-lifetime achievement; followed by an induction into the NAR Omega Tau Rho Society. This award recognizes exemplary dedication and service,

and the high esteem in which recipients are held by fellow members of the REALTOR® organization.

Outside of work, Boucher is married to wife, Nompelelo, who hails from South Africa. They have a seven-year-old son and a six-year-old daughter. He enjoys the outdoors, including sports, dirt bikes, and playing with his kids. The family also enjoys traveling and they try to visit his wife’s family on the South African coast as often as possible.

“It’s absolutely gorgeous country with miles and miles of pristine beaches giving rise to mountainous villages inland,” he describes. “The people are kind and humble. They don’t have much

but would give you the shirt off their back. I want my children to grow up and experience that culture and to recognize the opportunity they have here in America.

It puts a lot of things in perspective.”

The East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce Celebrating 90 Years! 1929 to 2019 The East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors are proud to celebrate our 90th Anniversary this year. Since its inception, the EG Chamber has been hard at work helping to improve the quality of life and the economy of East Greenwich and Kent County. Today, East Greenwich boasts a thriving Main Street that hosts our Main Street Strolls and numerous shops and restaurants.

Our Greenwich Odeum Theatre attracts a wonderful variety of well-known touring artists and helps draw people from all over the region.

For most of its 300-year history, East Greenwich was a fishing and farming community. Its protected harbor was layered with quahogs and scallops – a source of income for the families living along the waterfront. The western part of town was a patchwork of dairies and other farms that stretched to the West Greenwich border.

Overlooking the harbor was the Hill District where doctors, teachers, lawyers, mill owners and shopkeepers lived in houses of modest grandeur. On March 28, 1929, seven months before the onset of the Great Depression, some of these people organized the East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce to support local businesses that helped the town thrive.

Many changes have occurred since 1929. That was the year of the Great Wall Street Market Crash and the beginning of the Great Depression. Babe Ruth had long since been traded by the Red Sox and was in the midst of his storied career with the Yankees. The population of our town was 3,666. A cup of coffee was 14 cents and a new Ford cost $500. The three-year old Greenwich Theater (now the Greenwich Odeum) showed black and white movies starring actors like John Barrymore.

Five years later, the Depression was still a painful reality in East Greenwich, and the Pendulum reported that 91 local businesses agreed to sign on to President Roosevelt’s NRA – a plan to spread work among more people, “because we believe that it’s the better way back to better times.” Silverman’s Clothing Store on Main Street advertised a clearance sale “at prices that no wage earner can pass up.” Ladies rain coats were offered at $1.98; boy’s overshoes for 98 cents.

Yet in the midst of these hard times, Italian immigrants Gioacchino and Fortuna Palermo had the courage to open Pal’s Restaurant. Serving comfort food at comfortable prices, Pal’s thrived and still serves an affordable menu of home-style dishes at 43 Division Street.

With World War II, full employment returned. However, according to the Pendulum, a fuel-saving ban on pleasure driving made deserted Main Street a dull place. Shoppers at the First National Supermarket could buy apples at 4 pounds for 23 cents, but they had to carry their groceries home. The H.V. Allen Estate Agency sold insurance to protect property owners in case of damage from enemy attack.

In 1942, a USO Canteen opened at the corner of Main and Greene Streets and local women, under strict supervision, served as hostesses. It closed in 1946 and the building was converted into the Kent Theater by the Erinakes brothers. The family-run business had a long run of movie theater ownership – the Greenwich in 1926 (now the Odeum), the Kent and the Hill Top Drive-In further south on Post Road.

Growth picked up in the 1950s with the construction of a shopping plaza at Main and Greene Streets replacing mill housing that once filled the space. The original stores – Woolworths, Almacs Supermarket, Thorpe’s Drug Store and Newport Creamery – are long gone. They have been replaced by Kon’s Restaurant, CVS, Starbucks, and Webster Bank.

In her book, A History of East Greenwich, Martha McPartland describes the Bostitch Company as “an industrial fairy tale.”

Established in 1904, the stapler manufacturer moved to Pawcatuck, Connecticut in 1946. Ten years later, the company returned to East Greenwich and was greeted with a week of public celebrations. It built a large new plant set back on an 84-acre tract on Route 2.

In November 1969, the last section of I-95 in Rhode Island was completed. Three years later, Route 4 merged with I-95, making East Greenwich an easy drive to the airport, new malls, Providence and the southern beaches. The town’s fortunate location, as well as its new school buildings, drew executives from the state’s thriving large and small businesses. The farms west of Route 2 were subdivided into spacious suburban lots with large homes.

Street that range from sandwich shops and pizzerias to fine dining places. There are now over 40 restaurants in East Greenwich while the waterfront has become popular with recreational boaters.

Route 2, once a two-lane road that meandered from South County into Providence, is now the site of a cluster of medical buildings and New England Tech’s large campus on Division Road. The most recent sign of youthful entrepreneurship was the opening of LineSider Brewing Co. at the end of 2018. LineSider is a craft brewery with a tasting room that opened in a renovated building on Route 2.

The East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce looks forward to many more years of supporting the business growth of our community. It is the Chamber’s mission to help keep making East Greenwich a better place to live, work, dine, play, and do business.

In 1967, Henry Caniglia opened Chef-a-Roni on Route 2; a modest building offering a culinary tour of Europe. It is still filled with gourmet foreign foods to meet the tastes of residents nearby.

There were changes on Main Street as well. Back to Basics, a natural food store, moved to town in the 1980s. In the 1990’s, the Greenwich Odeum found new life as a venue for live shows, which has helped fuel the spread of restaurants along Main ShopInRI 73

2395 Artists Colaborative: Part 1

David John Ricci is working on a project so big, and so important to the music and arts community in Rhode Island, that I’m not even going to pretend for a second that the story will be told in this one article.

Consider this PART ONE and let’s get excited for what is happening and what is and what will be happening for the music community in the 401.

For the last four years, Ricci has been working hard to make his project a reality. Meetings with grant writers along with non-profit funding, is taking him a step closer but it is without a doubt a labor of love. Being a musician and a recording engineer, as well as a music fan, he realized the importance of this and has been putting the pieces together daily with the help of other

passionate entertainers who believe in him.

“There’s and unbelievable amount of talent out there.”

Ricci goes on to explain, “Bands die off, people get sick, the bands disintegrate…and the music is lost. Part of what this project is, is going in search of those people and restoring whatever they have (video, tape, photos…) and getting it out to the world; telling their story. There are so many great bands who have written great songs and there is no accessible record of it, especially if they were performing before the days of Myspace, Bandcamp, Soundcloud… I want to be a salvation for that.”

Restoring this music and pieces of memoribillia will have to include not only fans and the remaining band

members that have hung onto pieces of the puzzle, but people from different corners of the technological field; Video, sound, photography, digital graphics services.

Even marketing and legal services will be on hand. This is where he hopes to bring everyone together, but it doesn’t end there. We’ll get back to that.

When a friend of his suffered from a stroke, they could no longer perform music together out at clubs, but his friend was still able to create. When this sort of thing happens to a musician, where can they work and still afford to keep their passion alive while making ends meet? This struck a chord with Ricci and he thought, “What if there was a place where people could go every day, and make a living wage while doing what they love?” Video, recording studio, marketing…everyone is working under one roof with each other and for each other in a field that they love and thrive in! Everything you would need to build and promote your project would be available within the collaborative. Music and the arts are not the most stable professions and often times, people in these fields find themselves struggling to survive financially, due to various circumstances. Even artists who are still playing small shows around town but have a rich history of playing all around the world for years, making a living doing what they love…they don’t want to work in an office all week until their show on Saturday night. Then

they are maybe offered half price drinks and the bands get to split the money that came in at the door with a $5 cover charge in a 100 person capacity room. You do the math. But for that 40 minute set that they played, they were in their element doing what they love, so they do it. Now imagine someone loving their job and being able to take home a paycheck every week doing just that. There would be a lot more people smiling and wanting to go to work every day.

While he is getting the business end of things sorted out, the first band that Ricci started working with is legendary Rhode Island, rock, punk, new wave band, The Probers. Hard work, a creative vision, and unique marketing, launched them into success in the late 70’s and into the 80’s. These days, we take the internet for granted. Everything is accessible within seconds. They organically brought hundreds of people out to their shows. The Probers and their story is a personification of what the collaborative, 2395 Artists, will be. Ricci was 18 when he first saw The Probers perform live. He was so impressed and blown away with their presence and their production. No other band around was doing what they were doing. The Probers marketed themselves like no other band, they brought an entire stage with lights and pro gear to their concerts. They had venture capitalists backing them so they were able to do this and afford the best of what they needed to succeed. Even their producers had worked with people like Bruce Springsteen and other artists that went on to big time success.

The story of The Probers will be told in a feature film style documentary that is already underway. You can see the trailer for it on Youtube and the 2395 Artists Website. Westerly Memorial Day Parade Monday, May 27 at 9:30 am to 12:00 noon The Westerly Pawcatuck Veterans’ Board will hold its annual celebration of Memorial Day with a parade starting in Pawcatuck, Ct and ending in Wilcox Park in Westerly, RI. This parade is one of the oldest parade celebrations in the country. It was started after the Civil War when this day was designated to be set aside to remember our fallen soldiers.

Boots on the Ground for Heroes In 2016, OSDRI launched the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial with the widely acclaimed and dramatic display of nearly 7,000 military boots. Each boot is adorned with a name placard and an American flag that represents each American service member killed in action in the Global War on Terror.

The first of its kind, the display had taken place at Roger Williams State Park over the last three years and has garnered local and national news coverage. Sadly, OSDRI writes on their website that the memorial continues to grow in size each year.

The memorial will be displayed from Friday, May 24 – Monday, May 27 at Fort Adams State Park. This event is free, family-friendly and open to the public.

This year marks the 3rd Annual Gold Star Gala for Boots on the Ground for Heroes. The Gold Star Gala is an event to honor Rhode Island’s Gold Star families post 9/11. The term “Gold Star” refers to a family member whose loved one was killed in action during war time in a foreign country while serving our nation. On this night, Operation Stand Down RI (OSDRI) will honor the families left behind, remember those who lost their lives during wartime battle, and raise money for the Boots on the Ground Heroes Memorial.

The Gala will be held at Fort Adams in Newport on Friday May 24, 2019, and attendees will have the opportunity to have a private viewing of the complete memorial. The event will serve as the official kick off to OSDRI’s presentation of

the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial at Fort Adams on Memorial Day Weekend. As part of a special ceremony, Gold Star families in attendance will be invited to place the boots belonging to their loved one.

Lincoln Memorial Day Annual Parade Monday May 27 - Chase Farm - 667 Great Road, Lincoln The Lincoln Memorial Day Parade is an opportunity for the community to honor those who gave everything for the freedom of our country. Parade steps off at Smithfield Avenue and marches along Higginson Avenue, Walker Street, Chapel Street, and ending on Great Road.
