Findings from the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA)’s 2021 Annual Report…

As we continue to operate within the now slightly less-restrictive regulations of the pandemic, we are all dealing with mental and physical fatigue. For our restaurants, hotels, and other hospitality businesses, this period of time has significantly tested our resolve.

Labor shortages, supply-chain issues, spiraling food costs, inflation and evolving COVID-19 variants have all taken a significant toll on us as individuals, and have affected our businesses, staff, and families. No one is immune to this experience.

There were, however, some positive developments affecting our organization and the industry as a whole in 2021. Last year, the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA) welcomed 102 new members, bringing our total member count to 912, and serviced over 3,000 local hospitality businesses. Despite COVID-19 restrictions, 734 hospitality employees received training through our Hospitality Training Academy.

RIHA also spearheaded a number of important initiatives in 2021, including our successful Consumer Confidence Campaign to improve local consumer sentiment; the Industry of Opportunity Campaign, highlighting valuable career opportunities in hospitality; and the nationally recognized “Be Kind”

In 2021, we launched the RI Hospitality Jobs Website to help connect industry employers and jobseekers, partnered with the RI Small Business Development Center to offer free consultations on applying for the RI Small Business Relief Grant Program, and held a number of “Women in Hospitality” events. We also made the “Be Kind” Campaign toolkit available online, held our annual Economic Outlook Breakfast virtually, and partnered with the RI Department of Labor & Training to launch a three-part incentive program assisting with the hiring of qualified hospitality employees.

Through our ongoing lobbying efforts, RIHA worked with local lawmakers to pass legislation around outdoor dining, third-party delivery services, and alcohol-to-go,. We also worked closely with Governor McKee’s office to ensure the hospitality industry’s concerns were addressed as the state began to roll back COVID-19 restrictions, including its social distancing guidelines and mask and vaccine mandates.

If 2021 taught us one thing, it’s that the success of Rhode Island’s hospitality industry is crucial to the economic health of the state. The RI Hospitality Association has successfully led the state’s hospitality industry for more than 60 years and we are continuing to do so now, with the goal of getting back on track in 2022.

RIHA is grateful to have the support of our industry and the community-at-large. Personally, I am so proud of our hospitality community – each one of you has proven to be resilient, adaptive, and strong.

The RI Hospitality Association is proud to be the leading voice for our industry, advocating for our 900+ members on important legislative matters, and working hard to ensure our industry’s successes. We are ready, willing, and able to continue to stand by our members in the trenches, doing the hard work that’s necessary to move our industry toward a more “normal” business climate.

Suggestions for Smart, Sensible Summer Workouts

Here we are again in the month of May, and your workouts will soon be done in the heat of summer.

One of the most important things to remember is you have to stay hydrated. It’s also important to maintain electrolytes and your salt intake. I have always said that vinegar and salt are healers, and they are. When you sweat, your body loses not only water, but also electrolytes and salt. This delicate balance of water and electrolytes is crucial to keep your body functioning properly.

If you don’t drink enough water, you can get dehydrated and suffer from light-headedness, nausea, and may even pass out. If not recognized, dehydration can even result in kidney failure, and in extreme cases, death. However, if you drink too much water without replenishing your electrolytes, you can experience hyponatremia. This can lead to confusion, nausea, muscle cramps, seizures, or even death in extreme cases. This is something most people are not aware of. We all know about being dehydrated, but few of us know about hyponatremia. To avoid this potential reaction, you need electrolytes and/or salt, not just water.

The time of day is most important. Think about when it is coolest. In the morning and after the sunsets are best, especially if it’s going to be a super hot day. Unless you are training for an event that takes place in the daytime heat, try to avoid exercising from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., which tend to be the hottest parts of the day.

Stay hydrated. Hydration is the key to avoiding heat stroke. Also, keep in mind that some medications may intensify the effects of heatrelated illnesses. Another thing to keep in mind is consuming diuretics like caffeine and alcohol before exercising in the heat can accelerate the effects of dehydration. Be sure to drink lots of water or any beverage that can keep you hydrated, without overloading on sugar.

Slow down. When exercising in heat and humidity, it’s important to take it easy. Give your body time to adjust to the warmer temperatures. Learn how your body responds to heat and humidity before trying out a new sport or exercise activity. If you feel tired or dehydrated, stop, seek shelter, and drink water. Don’t do what you would normally do in colder temperatures. Again, start slow and see how your body reacts to the heat. Build your workouts slowly.

Protect yourself. Find a sunscreen you like and apply it before you leave the house. Again, working out in the mornings is best because the sun is not as strong or at its peak. Apply as necessary. Wear a hat and/or sunglasses. Protect yourself.

Wear light, breathable clothing in light colors.

This can be tricky, however, because a regular white t-shirt does not provide much protection. Cotton absorbs sweat. Try wearing lightweight, loose fitting materials. Don’t wear anything heavy or dark in color because they will absorb and trap the heat.

Make it a fun affair. Many outdoor activities can be fun for the whole family or with friends. Even solo exercise won’t feel like a chore if you make it fun!

Here are some suggestions for group activities: play basketball or volleyball outside, go for a hike, throw a frisbee, or take a walk or run on the beach, bike to explore a new area of town, run or walk with a friend, take your pet on a stroll, etc. Make it a point to do something outdoors that requires moving your body.

As the hot weather approaches, we are all thinking about summer and bathing suits. Remember, the most important thing is to be healthy. We are all made differently. Be happy and confident in who you are. Be the best you can be. I’m not saying be happy if you are overweight. You need to be healthy. I’m saying be happy if you are at your healthy weight.

Don’t strive to look like someone else or to be super skinny. Strive to be the healthiest you can be. What I’ve realized over the years is that confidence is beauty. Love who you are, but always strive to be the healthiest and best you can be.

Should You Alter Your Investment Approach?

If you drive a car, chances are you’re feeling the “pain at the pump,” caused by inflationary pressures and global supply chain disruptions, along with the war in Ukraine, all of which have contributed to the price of gasoline to surge in recent months.

But the sticker shock goes beyond gas stations. In 2021, the inflation rate, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, rose by 7.0 percent, the largest annual change in living costs since the early 1980s.

What does this mean for consumers? In basic terms, the cost of an average basket of goods rose seven percent in just one year – and it remains to be seen how long it will take for inflation to cool down. While much attention is paid to how this is impacting short-term purchases like food and clothing, it’s also important to consider the toll it could take on your investments.

Consider that over the ten-year period ending in 2020, the median annual inflation rate was 1.7 percent. At that level, it would take more than 40 years for living costs to double. If, as was the case in 2021, the annual inflation rate averaged 7 percent per year, the cost-of-living would double in just over ten years. If you’re wondering if your portfolio is built to withstand these challenges, here is some information to help you decide:

Investment considerations during inflationary times

First, remember that the change in the inflationary environment does not necessarily mean it’s prudent to dramatically alter your investments. If your portfolio is appropriately balanced with your risk tolerance and time horizon in mind, fine tuning your investments may be a more appropriate strategy.

Equities

In general, equities (also known as stocks) play an important role in long-term portfolios. Compared to other asset classes, stocks may experience more volatility in the short term.

However, they historically generate superior returns over the long term and should be positioned to do so in your portfolio, particularly if you have a long time horizon. Making regular investments in equities through retirement plan contributions can be an effective way to build your equity holdings in a volatile market environment. Systematic investing can enable you

to buy more shares of an investment at a lower expense when markets are down and pay for fewer shares when prices are up.

Fixed income investments

Bond yields don’t always keep pace with inflation, particularly with living costs as high as they are today. If you’re concerned about this, investing in Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS) is one option to consider. These are marketable securities that pay a set rate of interest, but the underlying value of the bond is adjusted based on the inflation rate.

Also worth considering as a fixed income investment tied to inflation are I-Bonds, a form of U.S. Savings Bonds.

You can invest up to $10,000 per year in these bonds. The interest rate paid is adjusted every six months based on the inflation rate. In early 2022, I-Bonds are paying a yield of 7.12%. However, these bonds are not completely liquid, so your money needs to be committed for at least a year, with full liquidity reached in five years.

Other investment options

There are other investments that offer diversification potential in a high inflation period. This includes real estate, which may see rising values and higher income streams that often tend to reflect changes in the cost-of-living.

Real Estate Investment Trusts are marketable securities that offer ready access to the real estate market. Precious metals such as gold can play a role as a hedge against inflation. However, gold is a highly volatile asset class and shouldn’t represent more than a small percentage of your portfolio.

It can be beneficial to sit down with your financial advisor to more carefully assess how your portfolio and overall financial plan are situated in today’s economy. Maximizing the Impact of Your Donation to Ukraine and Other Humanitarian Relief Efforts By: Carrie McPherson As the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine has reminded us, when disaster strikes, people spring into action to help. Images of volunteers providing medical aid, shelter, and meals to injured and displaced civilians are a heartwarming antidote to the otherwise horrifying backdrop of war. For those of us who are not able to help the people of Ukraine in person, but still want to aid in relief efforts, it can be hard to know how best to get involved and ensure the fullest impact of your support. Here are some tips to guide your approach:

Make a monetary donation. In almost all cases, it’s best to give money instead of goods, which have the potential to spoil, go unused, or create logistical headaches for the very relief organizations you wish to help. Cash is the most effective and efficient option. Whether it’s an online donation, gift by text, or rounding up a purchase at checkout, contributing money may seem impersonal, but it empowers the agencies that are doing the work. Cash gifts are quick and flexible, allowing organizations to purchase what is needed, often in bulk, at reduced rates, near disaster sites. When supplies are purchased on location, it helps ensure the food is fresh and items are familiar to locals. Buying nearby also supports local businesses as they work to recover from the event.

Seek out trustworthy organizations. Unfortunately, scam

artists often see opportunity in the misfortune of others. It’s not unusual for counterfeit charities to pop up during a disaster, seeking to capitalize on the public’s goodwill. The invasion of Ukraine is no different. News outlets have reported on the proliferation of fake nonprofits that purport to be raising money for relief efforts, but in reality, are nothing more than fronts for swindlers. Don’t let the dishonesty of a few discourage your inclination to give, but make sure the charity you donate to is reputable. Look for organizations that have a proven track record and clear mission statement. Review their ratings and financial statements on websites like CharityNavigator.org or GuideStar.org.

Mind your budget and be strategic. Even the most generous

among us have a budget when it comes to giving. As you determine how much you plan to donate to Ukraine or other relief efforts, consider whether you intend your gift to be a one-time event or an ongoing financial commitment. While a bigger, lump sum donation can go far in helping, particularly at the beginning of a crisis when the need is great, there may also be benefits to spreading out gifts if you intend to be a long-term supporter.

Many major employers in the U.S. give employees the option to have a portion of their regular paychecks donated to causes they care about. And some even offer dollar-for-dollar matches on donations up to a certain dollar amount, which enable employees to double the impact of their gifts. Whatever options are available to you, and however much you’re able to give, it’s wise to determine whether you want to give all at once or spread out the impact of your generosity over time.

Save on your taxes to give more next time. Donations to a qualified charity may qualify for a tax deduction if you itemize deductions. Keep in mind that there are limits to financial contributions and rules for non-cash donations like property. Talk to your financial advisor and tax professional before making a donation, to map out potential tax implications and requirements.

Watching major conflicts and crises like the one in Ukraine unfold can leave us feeling deeply sad and powerless, but there are ways to help. Consider the above tips to make the greatest impact with your generosity.

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the women in our lives who do what moms do best: provide love, nurturing, and support to their children, right or wrong, as well as spreading her wisdom as the matriarch to generations within a family.

The creation of Mother’s Day in the United States originated with Julia Ward Howe and Ann Jarvis, who wanted mothers to band together to promote an “amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.” After Jarvis and Howe’s deaths, Jarvis’ daughter, Anna, took up the mantle of promoting Mother’s Day and finally succeeded in getting the day recognized as a national holiday in 1914.

What is a Juliet balcony?

Every so often, I hear terminology relating to a home or some type of construction that admittedly makes me stop and think, “Where have I heard that before?”

Recently, I was asked by a client for a bit of advice on a project involving a Juliet balcony. When I brought the term up in conversation with a fellow tradesman, whom I was describing the project to, I received a bit of an odd stare, followed by them exclaiming, “What the heck is a Juliet balcony?”

they are often paired with larger functional doors or windows. Many people enjoy being able to open what often are floor to ceiling doors that allow plenty of light and airflow, as well as a convenient and comfy view of whatever may be outside.

Although the terminology may not be that which is used every day, Juliet balconies are neat niches within architecture that when integrated correctly, can beautify whatever home or property they are assimilated into.

It was certainly a fair question, as this term is not really commonplace, even though we have our fair share of Juliet balconies in this part of the country.

A Juliet balcony is often not much of a balcony at all. Many times, Juliet balconies are small platforms that cannot even hold a potted plant, nevermind a person. They are usually a rail system in front of a door or window that provides the protective rail and allows the door or larger window to be open, and for whomever may be inside, to hang out at the rail. While they definitely can be large enough to hold a person or two, this does not necessarily have to be the case. Sometimes, the Juliet balcony is purely decorative and is not able to be accessed whatsoever.

In most cases, the rail system is made out of wrought iron, however, these days, it is quite common to see the balconies made out of composite material, aluminum, or even wood.

They are called Juliet balconies, as you may have imagined, because if you remember back to that English class in high school in the play ‘Romeo & Juliet,’ there is a balcony scene where Juliet is exclaiming, “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” The Juliet balconies are balconies that resemble that specific balcony from where Juliet was cawing from in the play.

Juliet balconies are features on one’s home that I believe to be a pretty cool detail. In areas where outdoor space is super limited (think New York City, as an example), Juliet balconies offer folks access to outdoor space, without pushing the envelope in terms of greatly extending off a building, and bringing into question, permissible use allowances and things of that nature.

From the exterior view, a Juliet balcony adds a bit of European flair to whatever building whose design they are incorporated into.

“When my oldest mare died, I allowed the others to see her, sniff her body, and realize that she had died, not just disappeared,” she wrote. Pugh added that the mare’s daughter, Dolly, was brought out of the barn to witness the burial.

“She stood over her mother until the heavy equipment came to move the body, dig her burial spot, and bring her down to the site,” Pugh continued. “Dolly followed the backhoe and waited patiently, standing guard until her mother was completely covered and the equipment left. From that day forward, when she was let out of her stall in the morning, the first place Dolly would go was to her mother’s grave and stand over it for a few moments before moving on to graze. She is now buried alongside her mother.”

Pugh revealed that cows also grieve.

“I saw my neighbor’s cow give birth to a premature calf,” she recalled. “It didn’t live long, less than an hour. As expires 5/31/22 the mother stood over her baby, trying to nudge it back to life, all the other cows gathered around. Then they formed a line and each cow walked by, gently touching the dead calf and then moved on. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.” Pugh remembers that the cows also comforted the mother by gently nudging her and remaining with the grieving animal for the rest of the day.

Honoring Our Beloved Fallen Soldiers

By Julia Romano Held on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day has a very special meaning. It commemorates those in the country’s armed forces who have died in the line of duty and deserve to be recognized and honored.

Schools and many businesses are closed, and it is not uncommon for cities in most states to hold a solemn parade in honor of the fallen.

Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, but it had previously been observed in an unofficial manner for many years. A similar, commemorative day reportedly took place as far back as on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina. The History Channel reports that after the Civil War ended and confederate soldiers left Charleston, a group of freed slaves gathered to bury and honor the bodies of union soldiers with a small parade. In 1868, Union General John A. Logan suggested that May 30 should be the first day dedicated to the annual memory of all soldiers who fell during the Civil War. According to the Library of Congress, it wasn’t until 1950 that Congress would agree upon a resolution asking the president to ”issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe Memorial Day, by praying, each in accordance with his own religious faith, for permanent peace in the world.” Nearly two decades later in 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was finally passed, which both declared that Memorial 68 68 Shop Shop In In RI RI

In 2016, Operation Stand Down RI launched the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial which presented almost 7,000 combat boots adorned with flags and placards. Each boot represents the life of a United States service member killed in action post 9-11 in the Global War on Terror.

The placard attached to each boot displays the name and photo of the fallen along with biographical information, military branch, rank and circumstances of death. The Memorial is updated yearly to incorporate additional U.S. service members killed in the ongoing Global War on Terror.

“We are appealing to the public for used vehicles. Simply put, we don’t have the inventory to adequately fulfill orders,” Durrani said.

To help facilitate the need for more certified, pre-owned vehicles onto their lot, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of the book value for any used cars. It does not matter whether the customer decides to purchase a car from their lot.

“We will buy your trade, even if you don’t purchase a car from us,” he added.

The dealership holds a monthly private sale. This month’s event is scheduled for Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, by appointment only.
