When you are young, you feel invincible – you go to bed late and get up early, eat whatever you want whenever you want it, and if you are lucky enough to work in hospitality, your days are long, but you never bat an eye getting through them. Like these young people, our industry does not sleep. No matter the time of day, from when the clock strikes midnight to the wee hours of the morning, someone, somewhere is working the grill, pouring coffee, checking in a guest, or stocking the shelves of a supply room. Working in hospitality is as demanding as it is rewarding. Competitive pay, flexible hours and camaraderie are attractive aspects of a career in the hospitality industry, but those things are not guaranteed to last forever. Unfortunately, working in hospitality as opposed to in a corporate environment often does not afford access to retirement plans. According to data provided by U.S. Wealth Management, only about 30% of hospitality workers have access to a 401 (k) plan at work, and only 13% participate – that is crazy! Many industry businesses do not offer formal 401(k) savings plans or related financial planning benefits, but through the RI Hospitality Association

Feasting on Zeppole in Honor of St. Joseph’s Day By Julia Romano
The Feast of St. Joseph is celebrated every year on March 19, a custom established by Rome back in 1479. In Sicily, Saint Joseph is seen by many as their Patron Saint, as he is credited with preventing a famine in the Middle Ages. Throughout Italy, there are endless celebratory processions, but the main event is always outstanding food. Zeppole are just one of the dozens of desserts that are available at all of the Italian festivals on St. Joseph’s Day. Although I would love to get my hands on an authentic Italian zeppole from Sicily, I am satisfied to find them at many different bakeries across the state. Italian-Americans throughout New England celebrate St. Joseph’s Day by binging zeppole, a pastry that can be baked or fried and is filled with either cream or custard and topped off with powdered sugar and a sweet cherry. These delightful pastries are available in most Italian bakeries, especially in Little Rhody, where customers idolize the saintly treat. Nearly one in five Rhode Island residents claim Italian ancestry, making it the most Italian 26 26 Shop Shop In In RI RI
state in the country, but, you don’t have to have an Italian background to fall in love with zeppole, also known as St. Joseph’s fritters or bigne de San Giuseppe; and those from different backgrounds are just as crazy about them as the Italians. Although Little Rhody is where zeppole is most associated, markets in Italian-American neighborhoods throughout New England sell them, including in Boston, New Haven & Hartford, CT, as well as in Springfield, Mass. It’s no surprise that zeppole are the traditional Italian pastry when celebrating St. Joseph’s Day. The Neapolitan pastry was created in the 1800s, and came to America along with waves of Italians, who emigrated from their homes and took advantage of the opportunity to build a better life for their families, while escaping serious rural poverty in Southern Italy and Sicily. Bakeries ramp up production of the sweet pastry during the weeks leading up to St. Joseph’s Day, but you can buy them year round at a select few Rhode Island shops.

The perfect zeppole recipe!

Directions Heat oven to 400ºF. Begin preparing the choux pastry by placing the butter, sugar, and water in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat. Bring it to a rolling boil. Next, add the flour all at once, and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon for about a minute until the mixture forms a ball. Remove from heat, add an egg and beat well until well incorporated, before adding the next. Repeat with remaining eggs until the batter is smooth and satiny.
Ingredients
Next, place the mixture in a piping bag with a 2D or other tip, or spoon onto a baking tray lined with a silicone sheet or parchment paper. Pipe or shape into small puffs, about 3” apart. (If piping, shape the upper part of the pastry so there is a small hole in the center, or make one with the back of a teaspoon.)
Filling
Bake for about 30 minutes. Turn off the oven, and leave them for 10 minutes, then remove them from the oven and place on a cooling rack.
• ½ cup butter • 1 ½ tsps. of sugar • 1 cup water • 1 cup flour • 4 eggs (room temperature) • 2/3 cup milk at room temperature • 2 egg yolks • 1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp. sugar • 2 ¼ tbsp potato starchpinch of salt • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • powdered sugar to sprinkle • Fabbri cherries: these are the most authentic for topping, but you can use maraschino cherries if you can’t find them.
While the cream puffs are baking, you can prepare the custard, and after they cool, it’s time to fill them with that delicious cream… To honor St. Joseph and all that he represents, share your delicious zeppole with friends and family, but once they get a taste, be prepared to get requests for them each and every future St. Joseph’s Day, a huge compliment to you. This article is close to my heart, since I suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Your brain is just like any other organ or muscle in your body; it needs calories and nutrients to function properly. If your brain is not getting the right nutrients, it can start impeding your normal brain function, such as memory, speech, etc., and it can also keep it from healing naturally from injuries. For those struggling with depression or anxiety, you may also be suffering from low levels of serotonin and dopamine, two natural chemicals in the brain that help you feel more relaxed and happy. Many healthy foods help stimulate the production of both serotonin and dopamine so it’s so important to fuel the brain with the right foods. Your brain breaks down protein to heal itself and it stabilizes your blood sugar level. It has been proven to decrease depression and anxiety. Just like your body, your brain needs plenty of water and all of the correct vitamins and nutrients. A healthy brain makes for a happier you. Stress and lack of sleep can definitely contribute to headaches, but headaches can also be caused by sensitivity to foods. Everybody’s different and every “body” is different. Different foods/beverages trigger differently in each person. Start keeping a log of what you ate on headache days. Over several weeks, you may begin to see certain foods making frequent appearances in your entries. The second option is to start cutting specific food categories out of your diet for a few weeks at a time, and see if your headaches/migraines go away (or at least become less frequent). If you suffer from chronic joint pain, the most common cause is inflammation. This could be from running, working out, having a career that requires you to be on your feet all day, etc. What happens is that the blood vessels dilate to let more red and white blood cells into the damaged area, supplying it with nutrients that aid in natural healing and prevent infection. Unfortunately, for injuries the body isn’t adequately equipped to heal, this inflammation will keep happening or begin to swell, resulting in chronic discomfort, pain, and possibly even further damage that will lead to inevitable surgery. Eating the right foods is like taking the right medication. Amazing things happen when the body is fueled correctly. The question is how does food help heal? What most don’t know is that painful inflammation is often caused by your body overcompensating for a lack of nutrients. Since not enough resources are coming through your blood vessels to heal the injury, it stays or becomes more inflamed to fix the problem. By having a diet with foods rich in Omega-3s, antioxidants, and vitamins C and B, you can promote better tissue health and even naturally

Despite the cold weather outside, the season has already begun for farmers and other growers looking to get a jump on the spring. They use the time now to figure it what to grow and ensuring their materials will yield the best products for themselves and their customers. A family-owned Woonsocket company devotes their time to aiding such clients by doing full-service soil testing and custom mineral mixes to get the best results. Buxton Hollow Farm Natural Products is the brainchild of Donald and Delia Demers. They take the time to work with anyone growing anything, from indoor potted plants to multi-acreage farms and formulate a plan to make whatever you’re growing grow better. continues. “That is very different from how I conduct business.” One of the growing trends is cultivators moving away from synthetic-based fertilizer products and switching over to natural products. A major reason for the shift is health: health of the plant, the consumer, and the soil. Using synthetic products, which are chemical based, not only affect humans and plants, but destroys the soil itself. However, without testing, there’s no way to know what is missing from the soil. For farmers and gardeners, there is a need to replace what is missing and the soil needs to be replenished with minerals and nutrients that have been taken up by the year’s crops. Demers offers three distinct soil tests, mineral, microbial, and compaction (which test soil hardness in the root zone in farm fields). What has caused the price of wood to skyrocket? My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting(www.LopcoContracting. com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting.com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column! In the Summer of 2020, I needed three 20’ long, 5/4” x 6” pieces of pressure treated decking for a deck repair we were doing in Providence, RI. Let me emphasize the number ‘3’; I literally needed three pieces of wood. These pieces of wood, however, were nowhere to be found. One of the things I pride myself in is the relationships I have been able to cultivate over the almost 30 years of being involved in the construction industry. This being said, no matter what relationship I worked to lean on, these pieces of wood seemed nowhere to be found. When I did finally find them, I felt as if I had struck gold. Thinking back on it now, not only should I have felt this way because of their scarcity, but I should also have felt this way because of the price I paid for them at the time! Although I may have wanted to faint, I had to pony up on the price because of how much in need of these valuable commodities that I was. This similar situation played out repeatedly throughout the recent pandemic for seemingly anybody embarking on a home improvement project. With supplies being so scarce, the industry price increases were, naturally, a given by product of what was occurring. Though there have been some price reductions since things were at the non-COVID vaccine era height, I would be shocked if pricing of wood ever came close to its pre-pandemic levels. The hard to get nature of wood in this specific environment, ultimately was the biggest reason for lumber prices to be jacked up so high. At the time, we not only had the pandemic, which slowed production, as the various mills producing the lumber went in and out of virus-related stopping and startings, but there was also a HUGE demand for the lumber that had never been seen before. People at home were taking on more home improvement projects than ever before. The riots that were occurring throughout the country, at the time, sucked up a huge amount of plywood, as folks worked to board up 62 Shop In RI
and protect their homes and businesses. As an example, I remember being hired by a hotel in Providence to board up their entire first floor. I went to the lumberyard and bought ALL of the 1/2” plywood they had. I was one contractor, for one hotel, and had eaten up all of this popular lumberyard’s plywood in one swoop – and this was something that was occurring all over! Then, at this particular time, there were also a ton of historic wildfires in the Pacific Northwest, which burned hundreds and hundreds of square miles of lumber. This is a part of the country where we forrest much of the lumber we use for home improvements. If you add all of this together, it equals a perfect storm of diabolical sorts that decimated the lumber industry and forced the lumber prices we all experienced to astronomical levels. Clearly all of these events occurring at the exact same time were a coincidence of biblical proportions. Nonetheless, these instances provide insight as to the influence of outside forces on the cost of lumber. In our current situation, instances that will, unfortunately, have a resonating impact for what I believe to be quite some time to come.

St. Patrick is the most renowned of Ireland’s patron saints, and a symbol of all things Irish across the globe. St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated in Ireland since primitive times when Saint Patrick brought Christianity to the island. Some old Irish customs for St. Patrick’s Day can still be experienced today, away from the parades, Guinness, Leprechauns, and general Irish gaiety. In Irish culture, St Patrick’s Day is traditionally a religious celebration, a time of giving thanks for the arrival of Christian teachings and values. Below are some of the most popular Irish traditions for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day: Shamrocks are traditionally worn in bunches pinned to your lapel on St Patrick’s Day. The tiny Irish plant is associated with the saint, based on a legend that St. Patrick used the three-clover leaf of the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity to the Irish in the fifth century AD. The ‘wearing of the green’: Green is considered to be the color which best represents Ireland, also known as the Emerald Isle. Although not everyone follows this tradition, it is still an Irish custom to wear

something green on St Patrick’s Day in honor of Ireland’s most famous patron saint. Going to church is still the most popular tradition in Ireland on St Patrick’s Day. Although it has grown into something of a worldwide party, St Patrick’s Day is first and foremost a religious festival recognized by both the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches in Ireland. Breaking Lent is also traditionally permitted on St Patrick’s Day. Because the patron saint’s holiday always falls within the season of lenten fasting, it is allowed on that day to break your ‘fast’ and celebrate with whatever food and drink you fancy. So, while some people in Ireland give up alcohol during lent, the pubs are always full on the 17th of March. Drowning the shamrock: For luck on St Patrick’s Day, it was traditional to drop a shamrock into customers drinks in the pub, hence, the custom of ‘drowning the shamrock’ on St Patrick’s Day. In theory, downing more drinks means more good luck for the year ahead!
Pilgrimages and Processions: Certain places associated with St Patrick host religious rituals such as climbing mountains barefoot or processions to sites where relics of the saint are believed to be kept. While Ireland hosts many St. Patrick’s Day parades in towns and cities, on the outskirts of the crowds, there are more traditional celebrations of Saint Patrick. Certain places in Ireland are particularly associated with Ireland’s patron saint and they have unique customs and rituals which take place on the 17th of March each year. Here are some of the best examples: Downpatrick, County Down, which is said to be the final resting place of St Patrick and the site thought to be his grave, is a focus for pilgrimage every year on St. Patrick’s Day. The grave is marked with a large stone and stands in the grounds of the cathedral. Armagh, County Armagh in northern Ireland has been the religious capital of Ireland for over 1,500 years and is home to both Catholic and Church of Ireland cathedrals dedicated to Saint Patrick.

The 66th Annual Newport, Rhode Island Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will be held, rain, snow, or shine, on Saturday, March 12th, 2022. It will begin promptly at 11:00am from Newport City Hall and will proceed to Carroll Avenue at Saint Augustine’s Church in the heart of the Fifth Ward. The parade this year is estimated to last 2 hours and will include Pipe Bands, Marching Bands, Fife & Drum Corps, Clown Units, reenactment units, and a host of local, state, and regional organizations, including police and fire units, social/fraternal organizations, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, schools, and nonprofits. The Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is always held on the Saturday preceding March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day), unless the 17th is a Saturday, in which case it is held on that day. Each year, two individuals are honored, a Grand Marshal and a Dedicant. This year, the parade is dedicated to Garrett M. “Gary” Loftus, and the Grand Marshal is Robert “Rocky” Kempenaar II.
While it is certainly not something that all people do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, there are many that take this holiday to have some drinks, and for some, to excess. Not a good idea for so many reasons. But, if you and/or your friends/ family are going out on the town, or to a local pub crawl, where drinking alcohol is an integral part of the activities, and your plan is to party til you drop, LEAVE YOUR VEHICLES AT HOME and either hire a driver, have a sober someone be ready to pick you and your party up, or “pitch in” with your friends and order a car service! Many will gladly pick you up and take you home, safely; they’d rather provide this service than to be summoned to a tragic accident due to drunk driving. Although following these suggestions will definitely NOT do anything to prevent your hangover the next day, it WILL save lives, both yours and those drivers and passengers on the road who are sober.

Trade in Your Vehicle Today for Cash! By Mark Berger The demand for certified, pre-owned vehicles continues to remain at a fever pitch. Many auto dealers are still struggling to meet customer needs.
Toyota of Smithfield asks fleet and vehicle owners to consider bringing in their older cars or trucks for more fuel-efficient models. General Manager John Durrani hopes those looking for new inventory should take advantage of several dealer incentives. “Anyone trading in either their used or certified pre-owned cars will receive an additional $1,000 over book value,” he said. “There isn’t a better time for anybody to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more than its ever going to be worth.” The dealership has back orders for weeks and sometimes months on certain models. Durrani said their market has been “pretty crazy”. With fewer cars available on their lots, announcing tradeins bonuses has become extremely critical. Durrani said people currently have the means to either purchase a new vehicle or one of the very few remaining used cars on their lots. That stems from several rounds of federal and state financial incentives and now with tax season looming, more money will reach families in need. The ask remains because of raised requests, the general manager said. “We are appealing to the public for used vehicles. Simply put, we don’t have the inventory to adequately fulfill orders,” Durrani said. To help facilitate the need for more certified, pre-owned vehicles onto their lot, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of the book value for any used cars. It does not matter whether the customer decides to purchase a car from their lot, Durrani said. “We will buy your trade, even if you don’t purchase a car from us,” he added. The dealership holds a monthly private sale. This month’s event is scheduled for Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, by appointment only. Those who attend will be expected to follow social guidelines but also have access to their inventory. Managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives.
