Owner of Anthony’s Italian Cuisine, Anthony Palmisano, knows Federal Hill in Providence well. His family has been a part of that neighborhood for more than a century after emigrating from Sicily and Naples, Italy. His family grew up close to the area, and when he opened his restaurant on 441 Atwells Ave. in Providence three years ago, it was a homecoming for him and his family.

Helping The Homeless in Pawtucket

By Jenn Lombari Sometimes it just makes you feel good to do something nice for others. Pawtucket resident, Beverly Harding, says that helping the homeless has helped her keep going, especially in winter when depression can hit hard.

Helping out has given her more purpose and that’s a win for everyone.

Back in December 2020 when she was at a doctor appointment, she could see the homeless on Taft Street by the river from the parking lot. It all started when she brought a pot of hot soup down to some people that were camping there. Her friend, Jaqueline Rancourt, inspired her to start the Facebook page, Taft Street Homeless Community. She has been there from day one to help and guide Beverly since she was very unfamiliar with how social media worked and how she could use it to engage the public. One pot of soup started everything. She started

to get to know a lot of the Taft Street residents that were living in tents, on a very personal level; good people in bad situations. These people needed help acquiring items like tents, rope, tarps, firewood, clothing, and food. The Facebook page was started and Beverly was overwhelmed with the response from the community and even people out of state. She was surprised that total strangers would trust her to get these items to the homeless community.

The residents of Taft Street started putting in requests for what they needed and she was able to post it to the page and from there, the donations started rolling in.

If someone needed a certain size coat or boots, it got donated. There have even been situations where pet food and supplies were needed. It’s hard enough having to lose your home, and a pet being with you can really help emotionally for you both. As of now, the biggest need was for socks. I put the word out on my page, Bev’s Blessings, and was overwhelmed with the response. There was a lady that donated a suitcase on wheels that I had asked for because it seems to make life easier for the homeless just to pack your stuff in the suitcase. They’re always on the move. Well this lady went out and bought a suitcase.

She also bought a bunch of socks and completely filled the suitcase with socks so I am pretty much sets with socks for a while because of her.”

There are about thirty people and about four dogs that live in the “tent city”. Beverly wasn’t sure of the laws about distributing food. She reached out on a community Facebook page for Pawtucket residents and everyone was telling her to “do it”. People were offering to help pay fines if it came to that. Someone even donated bowls. So she cooked, packed everything up in her car and went there to feed people. They were very grateful to have a warm meal. As she began to get to know the people down there, they mentioned that the one thing they never receive but would like to, is a warm breakfast.

It was mentioned on social media and the next day, someone was down at the tent city with a hot breakfast for everyone. Who that person was is still unknown but “it was very nice of them”.

As of February 2021, the city has worked with House Of Hope to help get most of the people into hotels for the cold winter months. Their dogs are able to be at the hotels

as well. Beverly now makes her rounds to the hotels and lets the people pick through the donations for what they may need. Everything from clothing and footwear to personal hygiene items and feminine hygiene items, snacks, water, etc. Donations just keep rolling in thanks to the people who follow her Bev’s Blessings page on Facebook. She stated, “The response from people has just been overwhelming. I never thought in a million years that this would become what it has become. There are so many good people out there that want to help but don’t know how and now because I’m the middleman I believe that I’m making it a bit easier to help. I even meet up with these people somewhere or I go to their house to pick up and they are always very pleasant and very nice to me and so grateful for what I am doing; but again if it was not for these people that are donating, I would not be able to do what I’m doing.’’

She went on to explain, “unfortunately I don’t know what’s going to happen once the nice weather comes… whether they will be taken out of the hotels and put back into the tents… what I’m hoping is that they all end up getting housing in the meantime as they’re in the hotels.

I’m sure there will be a few that will end up going back for tents.

These people call Bev and ANGEL. When they see her orange Honda Element pull up, they are so grateful and courteous. Not only are they happy for the donations, but they are happy just to have some friendship and conversation as well. They explain to her what’s going on in their lives and how many people are waiting on section 8 housing and doing what they need to do to secure that. House of Hope and CES (Coordinated Entry System) have been a big help and Beverly believes they do amazing work when they all work together.

She asks that if you’d like to help, please do not leave donations at the tent city on Taft Street. They will get destroyed by weather and wildlife. Reuben Soup

Why have soup and a sandwich when your soup can be your sandwich?

I had all of the ingredients to make a Reuben sandwich. But I wanted soup. So I made Reuben Soup! The same idea as a French Onion Soup with Reuben ingredients.

INGREDIENTS: Rye bread slices Sauerkraut, drained and rinsed Chicken stock Pastrami, sliced thinly Swiss cheese, sliced thinly I like to take the sauerkraut, rinse it under cold water, and toss it in a pot that already has some finely chopped bacon and onions cooking in it. Once the ingredients have cooked down, set it aside. (If you prefer not to use

bacon and onions, that's fine, too.)

Find a source for great pastrami, like a good neighborhood deli.

Heat the chicken stock in a pot. Take the thinly sliced pastrami and chop it up into bite-sized pieces. Place the pastrami in the chicken stock to warm through. Keep the stock warm on low heat.

Now you're ready to assemble...

Take an oven-proof soup bowl. Line the bottom with some rye bread. On top of that, place a nice helping of the sauerkraut. Pour the warm chicken stock with the pastrami over the sauerkraut. Layer slices of Swiss cheese over the top of the bowl. Place it under the broiler

SUPREME PASTIERA EASTER PIE WHEAT, RICE OR BARLEY

Pasta Frolla 1 cup flour 2 egg yolks 4 tbsp milk 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla 1/4 lb butter Sift flour on pastry board. Form pocket in center of flour.

Drop egg yolks and butter cut into small pieces and with fork, blend in butter, egg yolks and flour.

Add sugar, vanilla and just enough milk to hold mixture together.

Filling Wheat, barley or rice (see next column) 4 cups Supreme Ricotta Cheese (Whole Milk or Part Skim) 2 cups sugar 3 egg yolks 3 egg whites 1 cup boiled milk

Roll out on lightly floured board, keeping dough in circular shape.

1/4 cup chopped citron

Roll from center toward the edges until dough is 1/8 inch thick.

1/4 cup chopped orange peel

Fit dough into 10-inch pie plate or spring form pan.

Save leftover dough for strips to criss-cross top of pie.

Wheat, Barley or Rice (use one) 1 cup drained wheat (soaked 72 hours and cooked 10 minutes) 1 cup drained barley (soaked 24 hours and cooked 10 minutes)

(cooked 10 minutes) Drain Supreme Ricotta.

Add sugar, egg yolks and blend together.

Add wheat or barley or rice and cooled boiled milk, citron, orange peel and vanilla.

Blend ingredients together thoroughly with mixer.

Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Pour mixture into lined pie plate or spring pan.

Criss-cross top with strips made from remaining pie crust dough.

Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 1/2 hours or until firm in center.

Style Profile Day in the life Christina Rosciti, Real Estate Agent with Residential Properties By: Desi Baker Christina Rosciti is powerhouse realtor with Residential Properties who has a different approach. Here is a typical day in the life of this woman who is just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside:

7am: I usually wake up between 6-7am, I am a morning person!

However, depending on my workload the day of will depend on what time I really get myself up in the morning. I do not leave my bed however without checking emails on my phone. My client’s questions are always a priority, so I make sure I am prompt in returning their emails.

7:30am: I am incredibly close with my Dad. I speak with my

father every morning around this time. He is a rock for me and such a good person, and always gives me sound advice and is always making sure I start the day off with positivity and love. After I speak with my father, my brother and I exchange “good morning” texts. We are a close family, so we keep in touch!

8-9am: It’s important for me that I get a workout in.

My days blend into one another so if I don’t work out before I leave, I won’t get it done! I do a video workout or a Kettlebell workout in my home and try to push myself as much as I can, ha! It doesn’t always work out that way!

9am:

Coffee time then shower. I do my best thinking in the shower; I don’t think I am the only one! I run through my day in my head and make sure I have everything planned out

10am: I check emails on my laptop again before I leave the house, again planning out my day. My schedule can easily change from 7-10am so I make sure that nothing has come up that I have to squeeze in during my day.

10:30pm: I am out and about at appointments! My meetings

can range from multiple client showings to meeting with industry professionals. I could be driving local or outside of the city as I show homes throughout Rhode Island. This is one of my favorite parts of my career, exploring all of the different places Rhode Island has to offer!

1pm: I try and stop for lunch but most of the time my schedule

is pretty packed and lunch time is a good time for clients to see homes. However, when I do have lunch I try to meet up with a colleague or I eat on the run or eat lunch in front of my laptop. I know, boring!

4pm: This time is a coveted time for showings. Between 4-6pm I am mostly showing homes to clients after they are finished with work. This is a very busy time for me!

6:30pm: My day slows down and I get a moment to return

emails and calls that I may have missed. I almost always see a friend or family for dinner to catch up and wind down. I am a social person and love to be out meeting new people and potentially new clients! However, I always allow that to happen organically.

Organic connections are the best connections.

9pm: I am home and put my feet up and I am not going to lie, I check my emails again! I am known for my timely responsiveness to clients or potential clients so it’s important to me to keep up that reputation! Finding a home for good people is something I take very seriously. This is a personal thing; they have to make sure they are in caring hands when they find the right realtor. My clients are family to me, and I make sure that they feel that and know I am here for whatever their needs may be.

10:30pm: Good night! I hit the sheets and mentally prepare

for my next day. I am lucky to love what I do, and I truly do look forward to what the next day has in store for me and my clients.

JORDAN’S JUNGLE

Grows More Branches in 2021

Jordan Ford, owner of Jordan’s Jungle, has taken every brick that 2020 threw at him and used them as the inspiration to add on to his ever expanding jungle.

“2020 was difficult for everyone and that goes without saying.”, Jordan explained.” The silver lining of the Pandemic for us is that we were able to connect with our Jungle Fam (customers) on a different level. Since we are all in this together, posting on social media and interacting with everyone, not so much in a new way, but in a much more meaningful and constant way, made us feel closer to each other, even though we were all kept so far apart.

Not only were we able to stay in business, but we grew (no pun intended) and expanded, all while helping everyone maintain some sort of normalcy. We really discovered just how important houseplants are to everyone. Not only do they help in cleaning the air, but they bring joy. So much so, that we have heard so many wonderful stories from the Jungle Fam about how we helped them keep their sanity, giving them something to concentrate on and care for during a very dark time. That means more than anything to us.

At the Jungle, houseplants are not a way to make a living. They are how we live. This is a passion and dedication and something that each and every one of us needs. To know that our Jungle Fam feels the same way is incredible.”

During the shut down, the 1,300 sq ft room that the Jungle started in 6 years ago (located behind the main showroom now) became available again. Jordan took the opportunity to expand back to where it all started and offer a full pottery room, separate from the main showroom. That has enabled

them to offer more plants and tons of new pottery. The grand opening of the pottery room was when they reopened to the public, September 5th. And now the pottery room is moving!

Shortly after they reopened to the public, Jordan learned that the other studio located behind the main showroom, and to the side of the new pottery room, was becoming available. He took the opportunity to gain another 3,000 sq ft and essentially double the pottery room. He said,”We began construction at the beginning of the year, and our new pottery room is now open, offering nearly endless options for sizes, colors, patterns, textures and more.

The previous pottery room has been closed down to the public and is now our full propagation center, we call The Lab. You can view The Lab through the pottery room to see what we have growing.”

2021 will hopefully be a very big year for the Jungle. With the NEW new pottery room open, they have really expanded the pottery and plant care offerings. The staff at Jordan’s Jungle

are working with a New England woodworker to offer new styles of plant stands and supports, along with many new lines of ceramics and powder coated terra cottas.

Expanding the propagation efforts going forward has given them the ability to have many new and exciting varieties of plants coming up later in 2021, along with the staples and everyday favorites.

As they approach and look forward to warmer weather and the Spring months, the staff are geared up for a huge Mother’s Day weekend special as well as Memorial Day. Deck and patio plants have been pre-booked with more offerings and amazing prices. “Spring is our favorite time of year in the Jungle and we are really excited for the coming season.” Alocasia in many varieties and sizes from little 4” pots to HUGE 14” pots that stand 6’ tall, along with palms, palms and more palms. Hibisicus, Passion Flowers, Ferns and large Cactus too!

Your emotions and your physicality are connected.

What does this mean? Think about this. When you’re having a good day, the outfit looks great, your hair looks good, everything’s working, somehow your mental sharpness is spot on! The days when you don’t feel physically put together, your mental sharpness is off. This is because when you feel good physically, you feel great mentally. The two are more related than you think. Practicing gratitude everyday will make you and those around you, better people.

Practicing gratitude absolutely makes you feel great emotionally, however, it’s connected to the physical because it has everything to do with making your energy level rise, and when you feel energetic, it keeps you moving! So, if you don’t think you are ready to exercise your body, start with exercising your brain.

Practice daily rituals of being grateful and watch how it changes your outlook on life. Being grateful and practicing gratitude everyday can also increase self esteem. When you count your blessings in life, when you’re thankful for the things you have, your life takes on a new meaning and you realize it’s a good 34 Shop In RI

life! You then begin to see yourself as worthy of that life. You’re less likely to focus on your insecurities, and physically, will likely have more energy. More energy means movement and movement means you are being physical. Now your mental and physical are connected. Amazingly, just being grateful helps your confidence to grow, improving your self-esteem and your physical health. Gratitude also improves your relationships.

Expressing gratitude for the littlest things that your partner, friend, or family member does, will make them want to do more things for you. Opening with the positive will direct any conversation towards a more open discussion, as opposed to coming out as an attack. Once you have a healthy relationship, whether it be with a significant other, friend, or family member, you feel better and the energy emerges, making it easier to want to be physical.

Believe it or not, being grateful also helps regulate your sleep pattern. The way you sleep at night says a lot about you. It’s a definite indicator as to what is

going on in your life and in your head at that moment. If you find yourself battling your way to a good night’s sleep, you’re probably worried about something, and unless you find what it is and see it in a more positive light, you’ll lose more than just sleep in the long run.

Positive thoughts will help soothe your mind and make you feel relaxed. That will translate to how you will feel the next day. You’ll end up being more productive and more confident and even ready to exercise. I’ve read that six hours or less of sleep, not only takes years off of your life, but the results are actually worse than with drunk driving. If you have enough rest, you feel energized, both emotionally and physically. One of my favorite benefits of having gratitude is it actually makes you more fun. Who wants to hang out with a negative person, someone who always has something bad to say about the world and tends to make the small annoyances of life seem like the big things?

On the other hand, if you’re with someone who’s positive, who reminds you to laugh at that food stuck between your teeth, it puts a lot of things into perspective. I cannot express enough that the little things you worry about or that bother you don’t matter at all. It took the death of a young, vibrant, friend to make me realize the things you think matter, don’t! Life is way too short to be worried and stressed all the time. I just read a book, “From the Foster House to the White House,” and if that book doesn’t put things into perspective, I don’t know what will. Being grateful makes you a happier, more positive person and both of those emotions make you not only fun to be around, but mentally and physically, capable of doing anything.

Having gratitude makes you a better boss, mother, father, friend, co-worker, and basically, a better person. At work, just as in your relationship, acknowledging someone’s efforts will give them confidence and boost their morale. Give a compliment and be grateful and thankful when you get one.

When doing something physical for yourself, which allows you to feel better, you automatically become a better person. My example for years has been, when a woman makes the time to exercise everyday and feel good about herself, she is a better mom, a better wife, a better friend, a better daughter, etc.

If at work, as part of a team, when each of you commend each other’s efforts into making a project good, it strengthens the feeling of camaraderie and builds a stronger foundation for the company to stand on.

The bottom line is that it’s all about attitude. You can workout 24 hours a day, but if you have a negative attitude you won’t look or be attractive. However, when you have a positive attitude or a bright light about you, you always look good and have the energy to move your body. I’ve said this a million times; our bodies are meant to move. They move a lot easier when you have a grateful attitude, and beauty is about feeling good on the inside, even more so than on the outside.

By the looks of his office, Attorney Robert Russo is a busy man. Important documents are neatly stacked in various piles, his computer and phone are within easy reach, and legal reference books all vie for space on Russo’s crowded desk. Russo pivots in his chair as he tends to one task at a time, navigating his way deliberately through a day’s worth of work.

Ask anyone who’s merged two families into a new family unit and they’ll likely tell you it’s a bit of a challenge. In addition to learning how to adjust to new roles and rules, blended families face the complicated task of combining their finances. If you are in this process, keep these six tips in mind to enhance the financial compatibility of your new blended family.

Look at the entire picture.

To make the most of your shared finances, take the time to understand all aspects of your separate and combined financial resources and obligations. Hopefully you and your spouse fully disclosed your assets and debts before your vows were exchanged. It’s also important to look at the new financial responsibilities for your household so you can formulate a collaborative plan of action.

Create new guidelines.

This means having some rules of the road as you make decisions. As a new couple, it’s up to you to determine how you will divide and conquer your bills, deal with alimony or child support, dole out allowance, and so forth. You’ll also want to figure out whether you want to maintain separate bank accounts and agree on who pays for what and how much of your income goes to the kids.

Make a blended budget.

After you know what you have to work with and understand your individual needs and expectations, it’s time to put together a budget. Your new budget will help your family stay within their means, provided that you review the numbers at the end of the month. Keep in mind your budget isn’t set in stone – it’s a document you should update as circumstances change.

Include the kids.

Where to Start When Creating an Estate Plan By: Ed Pontarelli

The COVID-19 pandemic has made Americans even more aware of the importance of planning for the unexpected.

While no one knows exactly what’s in store for the future, one thing you can do for your loved ones is create an estate plan that expresses your wishes in the event of incapacity or death. If you’re like a lot of people, you may not know where to start, but here are five documents that can form the foundation of a well thought out estate plan: Last will and testament This is the primary document that defines how you want your property and other assets to be handled. It also assigns guardians for minor children and even pets and it provides a place where you can name your executor, the person who will manage the dissolution of your estate.

Your will can also include directions regarding your funeral arrangements, such as whether you prefer to be buried or cremated.

Power of Attorney (POA) This legal document identifies an “agent” or person who can act on your behalf. You can choose to be very specific or very broad in the authority you assign to the POA. In some cases, a different family member may be POA for finances and/or personal property while another person is assigned to make decisions regarding medical care.

Living will Also known as an advanced health care directive, a living will conveys your wishes regarding end-of-life medical care. It spells out the extent of life-extending care you want to receive in case you are unable to communicate these preferences yourself. For example, you can request that medical personnel perform invasive life-saving procedures such as resuscitation or tube feeding as needed. Alternately, you can put in place a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order and request only comfort care.

East Bay Chamber of Commerce: People Helping People

Touting the generous support of its members doing good in the community.

Being a community leader means forging a path forward by taking the necessary steps, learning what direction to take, and which obstacles to avoid. When adversity strikes, the leaders also offer guidance and lend counsel as needed.

That extends to Chambers of Commerce, whose purposes are advocating for the businesses in the towns they serve.

The group of business owners and leaders form one united voice to foster change and support. That holds true at the East Bay Chamber of Commerce, located at 16 Cutler St., Unit 102, in Warren. There are 300 businesses from Warren, Bristol, and Barrington, working together to expand their respective reach. That has been even more important, given the circumstances that change how business works.

Michelle Hughes, Chairwoman of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, said that they have been actively helping members and communities, alike, in addressing the pandemic.

“We have been a resource for guidance within our membership and for the towns we serve,” said Hughes, who has been a Chamber member for ten years. She works as a certified public accountant (CPA) and is one of three CPAs on the Chamber’s Board. “We have adjusted our priorities to ensure our members are getting the information they need for grant and loan applications so they can be properly filled out. We posted messages on social media and our website so they can proceed.”

Because they have numerous contacts within the Chamber, someone can willingly step in to assist. Hughes mentioned the group’s CPAs as one example. If she was asked an unemployment question, then she could refer another CPA to respond, since that is not her area of expertise.

She feels working together has not only strengthened bonds between members, but will help them move them past COVID-19.

While virtual, the Chamber recognized ten companies that are doing good within and for the community. Their “Sail to Success” initiative awarded these companies for their proactive services. Those members included: BankNewport, Bookkeeping Towne, LLC, The Perfect Sweet Shoppe Bakery and Café, Tap Printing, Inc., OPT Physical Therapy and Foot Orthotics, Michelle Hughes, CPA, Highlander Charter School, Grace Barker Health, East Bay Community Action Program, and Bristol Total Fitness.

The Chamber also enjoyed hosting events such as “Ticket to Dine 4,” encouraging people to visit local restaurants by purchasing a coupon book. Hughes said that was great in her case because it enabled her family to try local eateries for the first time. Maybe they would have a dessert at one place or try a special entrée at another. The first one happened in October 2020, to bring in more business prior to the “Take it Outside” statewide program, allowing for outdoor dining last fall.

While area businesses have been stepping up to offer their services, they hope to continue hosting this and other events later this year.

“As the weather temperatures started getting too cold for outdoor dining, the Chamber partnered with Ocean State

Shields, who was awarded a ‘Take it Outside’ grant of $80,000, to donate unique packages to small business owners. They included an outdoor igloo that seats up to five, heated vests and table skirts, and other innovative products. We simplified the application process for our members so businesses in need of these supplies would have access to them as soon as possible,” she said.

Along with the prospect of holding another “Ticket to Dine 4” event later this year, Hughes also hopes the Chamber will hold its annual fashion show to raise money and awareness for several charities. The one potential “model” for this event is Bristol/ Warren School Superintendent, Dr. Jonathan Brice. He is also a Chamber and Board member who was approached to participate.

They look forward to possibly seeing this happen and whether they will be able to enlist another clothing store to participate in this event. They have Piccolo Children’s Boutique and Daisy Dig’ins in Barrington and Beleza Shoppe in Warren on board, and The Ramada Inn has been named as the event venue.

The East Bay Chamber also offers a highly active manufacturers group, led by Board member, Don Saracen. This group is pivotal to their local economy and collectively employs over 800 residents in the East Bay and

surrounding towns.

One of the reasons for the Chamber’s success is the members pitching in and helping. The Chamber’s “homey” feeling also helps retain clients. They are a small-town Chamber with a bigcity impact. They are also bolstered by the Chamber staff: Membership Director Bette Walpole, Sales and Marketing Daryl Keyes, and Administrator Suzanne Munroe.

They have strong Board oversight and several active committees encouraging membership participation and community involvement. Hughes credits their stewardship for the Chamber’s success.

While the pandemic continues, the East Bay Chamber of Commerce increases its membership as new companies open and other opportunities arise, with people electing to stay home instead of venturing out.

Fur, Fins and Feathers

When I launched my cable television program entitled Fur, Fins and Feathers, on Swansea Cable Access Television three years ago, I was afforded many additional opportunities that continue to flourish.

It’s often been said that when one door closes, another opens, and in my own life, this revelation continues to be quite true.

With the demise of print media and several newspapers that carried my weekly pet-related columns throughout Southeastern New England and beyond, I had the opportunity to change course and develop a bi-weekly cable access program that showcases companion animals and pets of all shapes and sizes.

Although access to the school building where the production is filmed is currently limited, the program will hopefully continue in a few weeks. The past 53 episodes have all been well received, and plans for future shows are scheduled. Guests have offered presentations about various canine and feline breeds, exotic animals, equines, and a variety of other interesting topics for animal lovers.

One segment that drew widespread attention was the interviews featuring Barbara Meehan and Maureen Walker, who spoke about the Memory Cafe, a program conducted at the Acushnet Council on Aging in Acushnet, Massachusetts. Meehan, a longtime Alzheimer’s advocate, spoke about the cafe and the joy that both clients and their caregivers receive from the dogs, whose owners are members of the Wampanoag Kennel Club. Maureen Walker, a

kennel club member and breeder/exhibitor of English Springer Spaniels, noted that many cafe clients who attended the presentations reminisced about past experiences as dog owners or had special memories of special dogs they once shared. Both women emphasized the importance of sharing animals, whether the four-or-two legged companion be a dog, cat, parrot, Iguana, or other creature. Meehan emphasized that Memory Cafes are growing in popularity across the country and urged kennel clubs and other pet-related groups to participate in these programs once they become available.

Another “star” on the Swansea cable program was Loretta, a Moluccan cockatoo owned by Celeste Mello of North Swansea, Massachusetts. The talkative salmon-colored bird was truly delightful and enjoyed jumping across the television set.

Program guest Rita Araujo, a retired educator and owner of Araujo Farms in Dighton, Mass., charmed listeners with thoughtful information about her beloved canine breed, the Portuguese Water Dog, a hardworking breed that gained prominence in the 1980s in this country and continues to attract a loyal

following to this day. Araujo traced the history of this fascinating breed, which was developed along the Algarve Coast on the mainland, where these enthusiastic canines were taught to herd fish into fishermen’s nets, retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and act as couriers from ship to ship, or ship to shore.

Another Fur, Fins and Feathers guest, Karen Taylor, came from Connecticut, with Bailey, a handsome Sealyham Terrier that I wanted to steal and take home. I fell in love with this verminhunting breed of English origin more than 40 years ago after spotting a photo of a Sealy in a dog magazine. When I couldn’t locate one of these canines in the region, I acquired another terrier breed and moved on to explore other pursuits in the animal world, but never lost my affinity for these handsome, spunky, and comical canines.

During this episode, Taylor spoke about her family’s long history with the Sealyham, a breed not often found in this country. She discussed care, conditioning, feeding, and exhibiting. The segment attracted many viewers via the Internet to Sealyham Terrier aficionados throughout parts of Europe, who enjoyed the video and watching Bailey on television.

One segment that also attracted much attention was the appearance of Donna Arruda, a Swansea, Mass. resident and founder of Project Spay.

“At Project Spay, we envision a world in which every feline has a lifelong loving ‘forever home,’” Arruda shares. “Finding forever homes for our furry friends is one of our most gratifying services.

The ongoing process of controlling the cat population in nearby communities through the Trap/Spay or Neuter/Return program is another feat for which we take great pride.”

spoke about dock diving, a relatively new performance activity that is rapidly growing in popularity throughout the country. She adds that most breeds - both purebred and mixed-breeds can participate and can enjoy fun with their owner. While sporting and working dogs crave this activity, many other breeds also enjoy dock diving.

Other performance activities that owners and their dogs enjoy include Earthdog (for terriers and dachshunds), agility, fly ball, and rally.

Another Option to Handling Bad Breakups

The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry. Nobody gets married with the plans to get divorced. Statistically, 50% of all marriages end in divorce. The rate is even higher in second and third marriages. The dreams of “happily ever after” often turn into a nightmare.

Divorce doesn’t need to be a nightmare. In fact, another option could be smoother than anticipated.

Attorney Shawn M. Masterson, Founding Partner of Shapiro Dorry Masterson, LLC, located at 145 Waterman Street in Providence, knows that there is a better alternative to the theatrics of going to court: divorce mediation.

Mediation provides an opportunity for both parties to have a conversation with a neutral third-party, in an attempt to amicably dissolve the marriage. While breaking up can be painful, mediation can ease your transition out of the marriage.

“When parties come together to mediate, there is a third party that oversees everything, and listens. Both sides contribute to reaching an agreement,” said Masterson. “In mediation, the couple decides how the marital estate is divided, not the judge. Leaving the decisions to an outsider is never in your best interest.”

Mediation can be accomplished quicker than litigation; it can be done at a much lower financial cost and

psychological cost, and you can craft the agreement you want and the one that you will stick with.

For Masterson, the practice of law was not his first career choice. Masterson spent time during the first part of his professional career managing hotels. He decided to go to law school at the University of Massachusetts School of Law at Dartmouth to advance his hotel career. However, the nature of that field meant moving every couple of years.

For Masterson, raising a family in one location was more important than advancing his career. The law provided a home.

Masterson began his law practice in Providence. At that firm, he focused on real estate litigation and bankruptcy There, he met Victor Shapiro and Bill Dorry. After ten years, the three decided to form their own firm, focusing on real estate and litigation. It was then, that Masterson saw an underserved portion of the legal market: divorce and divorce mediation.

Masterson firmly believes that each divorce can be resolved in an amicable, equitable, and affordable way. Whether clients choose mediation or desire to work collaboratively, the divorce can be resolved without endless litigation, anger, and resentment.

Masterson said that after initial meetings with his clients, they realize that they don’t have to fight to the bitter end

to resolve their divorce. He said that he can actually see a transformation in his clients from the first meeting to the day the matter is resolved. This, according to Masterson, is why he enjoys divorce and divorce mediation. When clients first arrive, they are anxious and unsure how they will adjust to their new situation. Through reviewing the divorce process: the timelines, the potential outcomes and pitfalls, the clients have a sense of direction and purpose...Masterson said that the most gratifying part of his job is watching his clients embark on their new life with confidence and happiness.

In addition, couples dealing with the issue may be doing things separately. That could mean sleeping in different rooms, using the living room or kitchen at different times, etc. Someone who wants out of the home may have issues finding a place for various reasons. They can’t move in with their parents because the parents are in a high risk group.

They might be unemployed and not have enough money saved to find their own place. Friends and other family members may not be an option, either. As we get closer to opening up society, couples in turmoil will have options, one of which is divorce.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Masterson is predicting a surge in divorces. The fact that many people had to quarantine for more than a year has escalated tensions within some families to the breaking point.

Masterson posits that in the pre-COVID-19 world, tension and stress could have been dealt with. Now, the stress festers.

There are things to do and consider before going through this process.

“That creates a unique situation that affects everyone living under one roof,” Masterson said.

“In the past, if there was an argument, each spouse could go and do something, away from the other. Whether it was going to the gym, grabbing a drink with friends, or just getting out; the parties had a natural cooling off period.

With COVID-19, everything was closed. There wasn’t an outlet for either of them to vent. That makes for a toxic environment,” he added.

“First and foremost, make sure you are in a safe place,” Masterson said. “Then, get all of your financials in order: bills, paystubs, tax returns, retirement, etc. Then, give us a call so we can review the files and see how we can best navigate the process. We take a lot of time upfront to talk about the best way to move forward in the client’s best interest. The best way to approach divorce is with a plan and a partner to guide you. The marriage may have been a bad experience, but the divorce does not need to be.”

Where is Asbestos Found?

Asbestos is a natural mineral made up of delicate and flexible fibers that are impervious to heat, electricity, and corrosion. These qualities are what have made asbestos a “goto” building material prior to society eventually figuring out how harmful it actually was. If your home was built prior to 1987, you may be surprised as to where asbestos may have been used in your home.

It actually seems like an endless list of areas that it could have been found! Even for seasoned pros, the list may be a little shocking. As an example, there is a good chance that those in the trades are very well aware that it has historically been utilized as insulation around various pipes, siding shingles, roof shingles, and vinyl floor tiles.

However, many veteran home improvement specialists may be stunned to know that asbestos has also been known to be found in gutters, fencing, carpet underlayment, and kitchen back splashes, just to name a few places!

Asbestos becomes hazardous when it is releasing dust or fibers into the air from it. When it is intact, asbestos is generally not considered hazardous. When it is in a form where it is able to be breathed in, this is where it can be extremely dangerous! Once in the body, particularly once the asbestos dust/fibers have lodged themselves into someone’s lungs or body tissues, it is not able to be removed.

There are a number of health challenges that can result from taking asbestos particles into the body. Asbestosis, Lung Cancer, Mesothelioma, and other cancers, can all stem from this type of scenario. If you find yourself in a position where asbestos needs to be removed from your home for any reason, it is extremely important to have someone who is wellversed in asbestos removal come out to help you.

The consequences of not doing so can literally be life threatening by this potential slow, silent killer. Unfortunately, one cannot tell if a material contains asbestos by simply looking at it (unless it is clearly labeled). When in doubt, have an expert come out to work through a process for sampling the material to see if it contains asbestos.

The awkward, ironic challenge with this, of course, is that if the surface you are inquiring about does indeed contain asbestos, disturbing the surface to run even a tiny sample by a lab for analysis, could potentially put someone around it at more risk than if the surface was left alone to begin with.

If the asbestos material is in good shape, you probably should not mess with it at all (unless it really needs to be removed as part of a larger home renovation project – i.e. converting the exterior siding to wood shingle siding, etc.).

If the asbestos material is in disrepair, it should probably either be repaired by an experienced authority or a professional methodology should be put in place to remove it entirely.

The decision as to what to do with possible asbestos at your home could certainly lead down a few different paths.

The most important thing to remember is to be sure to approach potential asbestos-containing material with respectful caution if the plan is to disturb the area in any way, shape, or form, whatsoever.

The local dealership, situated at 550 George Washington Highway (Rte. 116), has made positive strides in hiring people of different backgrounds to help make the carpurchasing experience much simpler and less stressful.

General Manager John Durrani said that initiative is no accident. He said the push to hire people who are fluent in multiple languages has led to increased customer satisfaction and returning customers.

“We have employees who speak several languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Lebanese, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, and Italian,” Durrani said. “It has been a beneficial revelation that customers feel more comfortable talking with someone who understands them. That level of customer service has led to those customers bringing their friends and family members into the dealership.”

He cites the work of his Customer Service and preowned vehicle Sales Manager, Victor Jimenz. The CSM’s fluency in Spanish enables customers to seek him out for any questions and concerns they have. “They trust him enough to refer him to other colleagues,” Durrani said.

He also looks for anyone interested in becoming a sales associate to not have prior industry experience. Durrani noted the reason is they can train them in the way business is done in a COVID-19 and (hopefully) a post-COVID-19 world.

“What might have worked in the past will not cut in today’s market,” he said. “We don’t want to hire people who have predetermined ideas of how things are done and aren’t willing to change. We want to have our customers’ peace of mind at ease when they leave the dealership.”
