If Cozumel beaches with lots of things to do and people to watch is your style; Paradise beach is for you. Paradise beach has all of the creature comforts and water toys that you would expect from a stateof-the-art beach club.

The bathrooms are very clean, they have fresh water showers, and changing rooms. They have a water iceberg, trampoline, palm tree climbing (a form of rock climbing), a women’s beach apparel shop, and kayaks. These are just a few of the amenities not generally found on many other beaches on Cozumel. With the addition of the largest fresh water swimming pool, Paradise beach is the most popular beach club on the island.

There is a large poolside bar near the main entrance as well as the beach bar. The pool is a great way to people watch while you drink your favorite beverage. The beach toys are a favorite with kids of all ages. There is also a pier on the south side of the beach where people board boats to go for snorkeling trips or to board the parasailing boats. There are lots of shaded beach lounge chairs that are provided for your comfort; free of charge.

This Airport Shuttle Service May Be Pricier Than the Flight Why drive to the airport and stand in line when a helicopter can pick you up and drop you off one step from the gate? If you don’t mind paying more than the cost of an economy seat on the flight you’re arriving for, American Airlines makes it possible. New deep-sea research published in the Royal Society Open Science journal has pulled up fragments of plastics in the deepest parts of the sea, showing that manmade pollution “reaches into the bowels of the planet,” reports Phys.org. Scientists found plastic contamination in tiny shrimp that live between 19,500 to 36,000 feet below the surface, in six of the world’s deep ocean trenches. Plastic is “consistently found in animals all around the Pacific at extraordinary depths,” says researcher Alan Jamieson. Particles were found in 100% of samples taken from the Mariana Trench. “It’s everywhere.”

The impact of surface plastics, vis a vis choking birds, dolphins, and whales, is widely known. But the problem is even more profound. The deeper the region, the more plastic was found, so, as Jamieson puts it: “even if not a single fibre were to enter the sea from this point forward, everything that’s in the sea now is going to eventually sink, and once it’s in the deep sea where is the mechanism to get it back?” asked Jamieson. “We are piling all our crap into the place we know the least about.”

The research team said it was almost impossible to know what the effects of plastic ingestion may be having on these little animals, as the particles seem to be blocking them. “The equivalent would be for you to swallow a 2-meter polypropylene rope and expect that not to have an adverse affect on your health,” Jamieson explains.

Reuben Soup Why have soup and a sandwich when your soup can be your sandwich?

I had all of the ingredients to make a Reuben sandwich. But I wanted soup. So I made Reuben Soup! The same idea as a French Onion Soup with Reuben ingredients.

INGREDIENTS: Rye bread slices Sauerkraut, drained and rinsed Chicken stock Pastrami, sliced thinly Swiss cheese, sliced thinly I like to take the sauerkraut, rinse it under cold water, and toss it in a pot that already has some finely chopped bacon and onions cooking in it. Once the ingredients have cooked down, set it aside. (If you

prefer not to use bacon and onions, that's fine, too.)

Find a source for great pastrami, like a good neighborhood deli.

Heat the chicken stock in a pot. Take the thinly sliced pastrami and chop it up into bite-sized pieces. Place the pastrami in the chicken stock to warm through.

Keep the stock warm on low heat.

Now you're ready to assemble...

Take an oven-proof soup bowl. Line the bottom with some rye bread. On top of that, place a nice helping of the sauerkraut. Pour the warm chicken stock with the pastrami over the sauerkraut. Layer slices of Swiss cheese over the top of the bowl. Place it under the broiler until melted. Enjoy!

Pasta Frolla 1 cup flour 2 egg yolks 4 tbsp milk 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla 1/4 lb butter Sift flour on pastry board. Form pocket in center of flour.

Drop egg yolks and butter cut into small pieces and with fork, blend in butter, egg yolks and flour.

Add sugar, vanilla and just enough milk to hold mixture together.

Roll out on lightly floured board, keeping dough in circular shape.

Roll from center toward the edges until dough is 1/8 inch thick.

Fit dough into 10-inch pie plate or spring form pan.

Save leftover dough for strips to criss-cross top of pie.

Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 1/2 hours or until firm in center.

By Julia Romano St. Joseph’s Day, also known as the Feast of Saint Joseph, is the feast day for St. Joseph - which falls on March 19th each year. Saint Joseph is believed by Christians to have been the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the stepfather of Jesus Christ.

St. Joseph’s Day is traditionally celebrated in many American communities, particularly those who have large Italian populations. These includes cities such as New York, Syracuse, Buffalo, Jersey City, Chicago, Gloucester, Kansas City, St. Louis, and yes, Providence, as well.

The Italian-American St. Joseph’s Day Parade in Providence generally takes place on the Saturday closest to St. Joseph’s Day, starting at 3pm at the intersection of Convention Center Blvd. and Girod Street. In 2019, the parade will take place on Saturday, March 23.

St. Joseph’s Day is a big feast for Italians because in the Middle Ages, God, through St. Joseph’s intercessions, saved the Sicilians from a very serious drought. So in His honor, the custom is for all to wear red. All of the bakeries

on Historic Federal Hill bake the most luscious and decadent, Italian pastry called Zeppole that is a celebration in itself.

Zeppoles are an Italian dessert, something like the American filled donut, and are actually biblical, derived from an ancient tradition dating back to Roman times.

Supposedly, after Joseph fled to Egypt with Mary and their baby Jesus, he started selling pastry to support the family. And it seemed that his “doughnuts” were such a hit, that the Romans even gave them their own name-Zeppole.

Make Your Own Zepolle’s!

Ingredients

• 3 eggs medium • 1/3 cup butter • 5/8 cup sugar • 1 lemon peel grated • 1 cup water • 2/3 cup flour • 1 pinch fine salt • Confectioners sugar for sprinkling on finished zeppoles

• 3 egg yolks • 4 tbsp. flour • 1 vanilla bean • 1/3 cup sugar • 1 cup whole milk

for the Zepolle Pastry Doughnuts

To prepare you need to create the pastry cream first.

Heat the milk in a saucepan, adding a half vanilla bean, together with its seeds.

Whisk the egg yolk and sugar in a bowl, then add the flour.

Remove the vanilla bean from the milk using pliers, then pour the warm milk over the egg yolk mix, then start whisking.

Put the mixture back on the stove and stir it constantly, until the cream has thickened.

Transfer the custard to a bowl and let it cool keeping it covered with a foil.

For the dough, place the butter cut into small pieces in a thick-bottomed saucepan, and pour the water. Add salt and bring slowly to a boil, stirring with a wooden spoon.

As soon as the butter has melted and the water starts to boil, remove the saucepan from heat and pour flour inside, using a sifter.

Put the saucepan back on the stove and start mixing with a whisk, then continue stirring with a wooden spoon, to obtain a compact ball.

Keep rolling the mixture until you see a white patina formed on the bottom of the saucepan (it will take around 10 minutes).

Turn off the heat and add the sugar, stir well to incorporate it into the mixture, then pour the mixture into a bowl and let it cool.

Once cooled, transfer the dough in a bowl and add the grated lemon peel and the eggs, one at a time, adding the

next egg only when the former is fully absorbed.

Eventually, you will get a smooth and homogeneous composition. Transfer it to a pastry bag with a starry nozzle.

Cut 8 square sheet pans and squeeze over each of them a dough disk, in a spiral.

On the outer edge of each disk. overlay an extra dough “ring,” so that you create something resembling a ball with two layers.

Repeat the process for the rest of the 7 pastries, until the mixture is finished.

In a deep saucepan, place the oil to fry, at a temperature between 350-375 F. Don’t let the oil boil, as you need to fry the pastry gently, turning them upside down several times, so that they are fried evenly.

When the oil has reached the ideal temperature, immerse no more than 1-2 pastries with the parchment paper you placed them on, as it will peel off by itself after a few seconds and you can remove them from the oil with kitchen pliers.

Stir the doughnuts several times in hot oil until golden brown, then drain them with a skimmer. Use paper towels to remove the excess oil.

When you have fried all the doughnuts, squeeze the custard in a pastry bag with a starry nozzle right at the center of the doughnuts.

Garnish them with cherry syrup, or a candied cherry on top of the cream and sprinkle with confectioners sugar.

Transfer them on a plate and enjoy!

A few years later, Hyde wanted to introduce a new concept. He wanted to open an upscale Irish sports bar.

In 2015, Arigna Irish Pub and Coal Fire Kitchen opened on Armistice Blvd. in Pawtucket. Named after the coal mining town in Ireland, Arigna

features a coal fired pizza station and their specialty coal fire wings. This comfortable bar is not only esthetically pleasing, but you feel like family when you’re there. Hyde is a self-proclaimed “meat and potatoes guy,” so he recommends the short rib or the pot roast. If you’re looking to grab a quick appetizer, start with some specialties like the Cheesesteak Spring Rolls, Mahi Fingers, or a Cheese & Charcuterie Plate. Wraps, juicy burgers and sandwiches will satisfy any appetite.

The coal fired pizzas are 14” of hand stretched dough and created with the freshest of ingredients. Choose from

one of the pizzas on the menu or create your own with toppings like Applewood smoked pork belly sausage, honey Sriracha chicken, fresh cheeses, fire roasted vegetables, and many more. Entrees range from fish, chicken and steak dinners, to traditional Irish favorites.

There are 25 TVs all around the restaurant airing nothing but sports. Rugby, football, soccer…if it’s on, it’s on. Twenty seven beers on tap are offered, including locals, Narragansett, and Foolproof, plus a great selection of bottles and cans, including Whalers and Revival.

In October of 2018, a second Arigna location found its way to North Providence. Opening in an Italian neighborhood, they decided to accommodate the locals and added some Italian entrees to the already extensive menu. You can enjoy some Italian favorites such as Meatballs, Sausage and Peppers, Shrimp Penne Vodka, and Chicken Florentine, to name a few. The North Providence location offers 40 beers on tap, and the coal fire oven is set aside in its own cozy nook. The kids will enjoy sitting in this area as they can watch their pizza be created.

All three locations have ample parking and the North Providence Arigna location offers complimentary valet parking on the weekends. Also on the weekends, you can catch live acoustic entertainment at all of the pubs.

FEELING COMFORTABLE AT DAVENPORT’S RESTAURANT Owner Greg Davenport built his success through food and service.

The pursuit of happiness starts with a dream and a desire to make something positive happen. In some cases, what people set out to do can get derailed for another opportunity they do not see coming.

Greg Davenport is one such example.

Despite earning a degree in electrical engineering from New England Tech, his passion to serve food and turn customers into friends took over and became a profitable endeavor. With two locations in Cumberland (1070 Mendon Rd.) and East Providence (1925 Pawtucket Ave.), and employing 90 people at each restaurant, Davenport has witnessed his business flourish.

“We pride ourselves on good home cooking,” Davenport said. “Ninety percent of our business is from repeat customers. Some of them will come back between three and seven days a week. We have served numerous people over the years and have built one of the busiest restaurants in Rhode Island.”

The Cumberland location opened February 15, 1990—on his wife’s birthday. Davenport said he bought the building that was previously owned by the Chelo family (of local restaurant fame). Their original menu was humble: pizza, grinders and pasta. At the time, it was a 60-seat restaurant, but he slowly renovated and made improvements to make it into the 180-seat restaurant it has become. The renovations will continue later this year, as Davenport plans on doing more improvements to the bar and kitchen.

The second location opened on the same date—February 15—as the first location, except in 1999. Davenport said he bought the building that used to be Red Lobster. They have seen a steady flow of customers enjoying meals from their ever-changing menu, which includes a seasonal menu, daily specials, and value meals on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Davenport’s may be best known for their seafood chowder. It not only entered the Newport Chowder Festival on multiple occasions, it won five times! Davenport said he was told that because his chowder had won so many times, they would have to be “retired” from competing. Such a compliment came in handy when

they were asked to compete in a “Best of the Best” competition. Davenport’s won that event, too, and has continued serving the popular favorite at both locations ever since.

Davenport credits his success to keeping things simple.

“This restaurant is only as good as the people that work here,” he said.” We have a dedicated staff that has been with us for a long time. They demonstrate that by showing our customers why they should return. We also have a great management team at both restaurants that keeps everything running smoothly.”

He said that the changing palette of the customer can be challenging. There are different requests that have to be considered such as gluten-free, nut free, allergen free, and others, so they strive to cater to everyone so that their experience is a positive one.

Another challenge is finding good workers in this economy. Davenport said that because the unemployment rate is so low, not only in the state, but elsewhere as well, fewer people are searching for work. That said, the staff

he has works toward the common goal of helping guests enjoy their dining experience.

The restaurant is also well known for their desserts. Their cakes, pies and other treats are made daily in a commissary.

The results speak for themselves, as they are often ordered for special events and functions. Customers can choose from their decadent chocolate cake, carrot cake, lemon meringue and apple pies, sundaes, and ice cream sandwiches.

Both locations are open Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 11:30 PM. For more information about each location, specials, functions, and special events, please visit their website at www.davenports.com for more details.

Those looking to experience Davenport’s for the first time may be interested in several promotions. Every Sunday and Thursday is $1.99 kids meals (with the purchase of an adult entrée), half-price appetizers at the bar from 3:00--5:00 PM weekdays, 8:30--close on Saturday, and all day on Sunday (with a drink purchase), and the Monday/Tuesday value meals for under $20 that include an entrée, drink and dessert.

Davenport also noted Lent being very busy for both restaurants.

He said that they use more than 1,000 pounds of fish during this time. He said that the restaurant is “insane” because of the take-out orders that come pouring in from the area. Among their other most popular dishes is the Bison Burger, which can be substituted for any regular burger (Bison burgers are low in saturated fat, are antibiotic and hormone free and are from Colorado farm-raised bisons) served with curly fries, and the Davenport Supreme, a grilled chicken and broccoli dish sautéed in olive oil, garlic, and fresh Parmesan cheese, and tossed with penne pasta.

The restaurant is affiliated with the Northern Rhode Island and East Providence Chambers of Commerce. They are active in the community, supporting various events and youth-oriented programs.

Erin Go Irish Bread

*Makes 2 loaves of 8 slices of bread.

Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

4 cups all-purpose flour ¼ cup sugar 2 tsps. baking powder 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. baking soda 1 cup cold butter, cubed 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup buttermilk ½ cup raisins or 3 tablespoons caraway seeds

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Cut in butter until crumbly. In a small bowl, whisk eggs and buttermilk; stir into flour mixture just until moistened. Fold in raisins. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; gently knead 5-6 times.

Divide dough in half; shape each portion into a round loaf. Place 6 inches apart on a greased baking sheet.

Bake at 375° for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer to wire rack.

Cookies:

Irish Butter Shamrock Cookies

Preheat oven to 375°F. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in egg. Whisk together flour, baking soda and salt. Gradually add flour mixture into butter mixture. Mix until well blended.

1 cup (2 sticks) butter ¾ cup sugar 1 egg 2½ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt

¼ cup (½ stick) softened butter 1 cup powdered sugar 1 tablespoon whiskey (optional)* 2 drops green food color green cake decorating crystals

Buttercream Icing

Divide dough in half. Roll out half of dough at a time on a lightly floured surface to ⅛-inch thickness (approx. 12-inch circle). Cut into shamrock shapes with floured cookie cutter. Place ½- inches apart on parchment lined or unbuttered cookie sheets.

Bake 8 minutes or until lightly browned. Transfer cookies to wire racks; cool completely. Spread tops of cookies with buttercream icing and sprinkle with green cake decorating crystals. Store in airtight container.

Buttercream Icing

Cream butter. Add powdered sugar and blend well. Stir in whiskey and beat well. Blend in food color. Add additional sugar or whiskey if necessary for spreading consistency. Makes ½-cup icing.

Note: *½ teaspoon of vanilla plus 2½ teaspoons water can be substituted for whiskey.

Foods to Fuel the Brain

By Julia Romano The brain is so complex, that it’s no surprise how food alone, will not determine its full cognitive functionality.

There are, however, many scientific studies that support the facts about certain ingredients in foods that can ward off memory loss and help one to maintain a sharp and healthy brain far into their senior years. In addition to the brain, there are particular foods that have been proven to improve and enhance one’s overall health.

Below are some of the foods, for which studies of them have produced significant results in helping the brain and the body to be healthier.

Broccoli If you’re constantly forgetting the names of familiar people you run into, or if your memory about conversations that happened with your spouse frequently seem to escape you, then broccoli should be number one on your market produce list. Broccoli is loaded with vitamin K, which has been shown to improve verbal episodic memory, which is your ability to absorb and remember verbal instructions.

Chamomile Tea During the colder months, your daily cycle may be off balance because of the decrease in natural light.

This might make it harder to sleep at night and to stay on top of your game during daily activities. Research shows that chamomile tea may not only bring on better sleep, but can also improve your cognitive functioning during your waking hours, according to a study in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Walnuts Walnuts are one of the top nuts for brain health, also due to their large concentration of omega-3 fatty acids.

A study published by The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging reported that eating walnuts can actually enhance memory and cognitive function in adults ranging in ages from ages 20 to 59. According to the study, individuals who had a daily serving of walnuts scored higher on cognitive tests than those who did not eat a serving daily.

Green Tea One study published in the journal Psychopharmacology evaluated 12 volunteers; some drank a drank a beverage containing green tea extract, while others drank a placebo beverage and then underwent functional magnetic resonance imagings. The study found that those who drank green tea extract had increased cognitive functioning. Researchers concluded that green tea may be helpful in treating cognitive impairments, such as psychiatric disorders.

Black Beans In addition to being a great sources of protein, black beans (and most beans, for that matter) contain a large dose of magnesium and folate.

Scientists report in the journal Neuron that magnesium can improve cognitive function and memory. Therefore, as the old rhyme says, beans are also good for your heart; a healthier blood flow means a healthier brain.

Having extra belly fat doesn’t just strain your back, it can also put stress on your brain. Just as belly fat helps cause the formation of plaque in your coronary arteries, it also clogs up the arteries feeding the brain-a contributing factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Ironically, in this scenario, the best way to fight fat is with fat. Avocados, for example, are packed with artery-scrubbing, hunger-dulling healthy fats. In fact, a study in Nutrition Journal found that participants who ate half a fresh avocado with lunch reported a 40 percent decreased desire to eat for longer periods of time afterward.

Elders who are diagnosed with a vitamin D deficiency show faster rates of cognitive decline than those with appropriate vitamin D levels, according to new research from the University of California Davis Alzheimer’s Disease Center and Rutgers University.

The good news is that getting your daily dose of D is as easy as cracking open some eggs. Three large eggs - what you’d use to make a morning omelet, will provide 33 percent of the day’s intake. Just make sure you eat the yolk—that’s where all of the brainprotective nutrients are hiding out!

Salmon It might sound fishy, but DHA-a type of omega-3 fatty acid found in fattier fish like salmon and tunacan improve memory and the time it takes to recall a memory. Researchers tested DHA supplements on a group of 176 adults who had low levels of omega-3s in their diets. (Most of us do, by the way.) Just 1.73 grams of omega-3s-about what you’d find in a serving of salmonmade a significant difference.

Almond Butter

Spinach Spinach is not only a yummy side dish to your next meal, it’s also packed with vitamin K, a brain-fueling nutrient found in most dark leafy greens. A study by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology reports that eating a serving of vitamin K-rich leafy greens daily can help slow down cognitive and memory decline in adults.

Switching from peanut butter to almond butter might better your chances of avoiding age-related memory loss. Almonds contain 3 times high concentrations of vitamin E than peanut butter, which has been shown to help reduce the risk of cognitive impairment. Also, some studies indicate the nutrient can also slow the decline of Alzheimer’s disease. For a snack, spread a teaspoon of the creamy brain food over celery, or mix a spoonful into your morning oatmeal.

By Susan Gazerro I’m sure most of you who read the title are thinking “did I read that correctly, salt?” Yes, you did. Salt can actually be good for you. You have probably been told otherwise, but I want to explain the benefits of salt. Should I have it or shouldn’t I? Do we have to be careful of our salt intake? Yes, to a degree. Salt often has a bad rap. You do have to be aware of your salt intake if you have high blood pressure or other health conditions.

However; salt, which is made up of sodium, also has many health benefits. I am not just talking about added flavor to food.

Before I get into the medically proven benefits, I have to tell you my own personal experience. Growing up, whenever I had a sore throat my mother and grandmother would always say “pour a hot glass of water, as hot as you can stand it and add some salt. Gargle as many times as you can”.

This worked 100% of the time. I then realized anytime I had a cut or an 30 ShopInRI

injury and I went into the water at the beach, my injury would heal. I started thinking early on, Salt is a healer! Fitness is a billion dollar industry and still growing, but regardless of the business profits, studies report that people are unhealthier than ever. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), from 2015-2016, 39.8% of adults in the US are considered to be obese; that’s a staggering 93.3 million people! If you’re wondering why that is, it’s definitely a complicated answer. What I can say from my perspective is that more people are purchasing weight loss products, sports apparel, gym memberships, and various other diet and fitness related products on the market than they’re actually using or are even necessary. If you have read previous articles of mine, you know I always stress to keep it as simple as possible, but I know that sometimes trying something new can keep us motivated. I want to highlight that what I believe from my professional experience can add value to your fitness plan and help you achieve your short and long term goals.

If you ask me, most of the products sold are completely unnecessary to achieve your goals. There are all sorts of teas, shakes, and pills that claim to get you in shape, but are packed with junk ingredients and potentially harmful stimulants. Most of these products are short term solutions. This means-sure you’ll drop some weight in the beginning, but it’s not a sustainable plan that will keep weight off and have you feeling healthy for the long run. With that being said, I understand that the type of world we live in now is very hectic for most of us, so we need quick, healthy solutions for our everyday plan. Most of us do not get enough of the vital nutrients we need ev-

eryday, and on top of that, our soil is depleted of nutrients in comparison to years ago, according to Ronald Amundson, a University of California-Berkeley professor who co-authored a 2015 study on soil depletion. As a result, the nutrients in the fruits and vegetables we eat are being compromised.

Supplementation can be very beneficial.

Meal replacement shakes, vitamins, and other whole food supplements, however, need to be carefully inspected before you buy them. Always look at the ingredients label and make sure that the product is comprised of whole foods. Another thing that most people don’t realize is that a protein shake and a meal replacement shake are not the same. A protein supplement should be used to get more protein, usually following a workout or maybe as a snack if you’re not getting enough from your daily food intake. Any supplement with more than 30-40 grams of protein isn’t really helping because protein amounts beyond that are converted into glucose. Now I know that for some other people that number may vary, but for the majority of us, anything above that per meal is unnecessary. A meal replacement shake contains all of your macronutrients such as protein, carbs, and fat, and is used to replace a meal. Pay close attention to all of the ingredients to be sure it has everything you need, and most importantly, to ensure it’s not loaded with sugar. The amount of sugar and the type of sugar are important to note.

Sugar has many names such as fructose, maltose, glucose, maltodextrin, dextrose, corn syrup, brown rice syrup; and these are just a few examples. Do your research and learn how to identify what you are consuming. Speak with a registered dietitian or nutrition expert for your specific needs.

Something that we see marketed often in the fitness industry is fitness apparel. No matter what your style, there is something out there to suit your taste, but do we really need specific apparel to enhance our performance? My short answer is no, absolutely not. You could pretty much wear whatever you’d like and still get a good workout in. I do believe that good quality workout clothes help us to feel more comfortable and provide support, and for some can help keep them motivated. The two most important items of apparel when it comes to working out are footwear, and for women, bras. For most workouts, your feet are really taking a lot of the work, not only for exercising, but in our everyday lives! Not having proper support for your feet can lead to other issues like back pain and plantar fasciitis. Invest in good, quality footwear, and always try them on before purchasing. A good sports bra is very important, especially for high impact workout sessions. RETIRE EASIER & WITH PEACE OF MIND Proper education and choices enables people to direct their futures.

By Mark Berger Many people begin assessing their life’s work and postretirement plans early. They want to know how they can be able to do what they want in retirement without the worry of being burdened with large expenses. With that knowledge readily available to them, they can make informed choices for themselves and their loved ones, so retirement planning runs smoothly.

Before making those decisions, there are several questions to consider. What are your plans for long-term care? Do you have enough life insurance to cover catastrophic events and secure your family’s future? How will the changes in Medicare affect Medicare Supplement policies moving forward? Will your retirement income be enough to pay for your needs after you retire?

These are some questions that Steven Gosetti of Bankers Life, located on 475 Kilvert Street in Warwick, can assist clients with and help provide them with direction and peace of mind.

Mr. Gosetti works with clients to map out their futures and discuss options such as Medicare Supplemental insurance, life insurance, long-term care and annuities. He said the key is simply sitting down with clients and having that initial conversation. Mr. Gosetti added that not knowing or assuming that previously covered services will continue can bring unwanted surprises.

“Plans change from year to year; some have higher premiums but offer more coverage and others may hold higher deductibles,” said Mr. Gosetti, who has been with Bankers Life for 14 years and is licensed in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts. “It is essential that people read their policies closely and consider whether their lifestyles and/or plans may have changed since the initial purchase.

They may not be feeling as healthy as they did before and/ or their needs have changed. These are some of the many reasons why it helps to sit with someone like myself to make sure they have the right coverage for their immediate and future concerns.”

Steven Gosetti or nursing home. Medicare may only pay a portion of these expenses—if any at all—so clients will need to use supplemental insurance or pay out of pocket to cover the costs. That’s why it’s important to think about what kind of long-term care people may need or want, and plan ahead for the costs. Long-term care insurance is an option that provides people with benefits to help pay for these services when the time comes, according to Gosetti.

“Medicare covers acute illnesses and recovery,” he explained. “If clients do not fall into either of those categories, then Medicare does not cover those expenses. In addition, Medicare does not provide custodial care, which involves at-home aids tending to someone needing help with bathing, dressing, eating and other daily activities. I can sit with people to discuss these issues further, so clients can better understand what the potential risks are so they can plan ahead to manage them.”

Life insurance is another often overlooked factor that affects the working and retired population. There are basically two types of life insurance one can purchase: Term and Permanent. Term refers to a fixed period of time that the policy is in force while Permanent insurance is designed to last your lifetime. Some of the points Mr. Gosetti says to consider in making a choice on their options are: Mortgage protection, supplemental or optional income and other family obligations such as debt, final expenses and legacy giving.

Medicare planning is very important to those individuals that are planning to retire and get coverage through the Medicare system. The Medicare Annual Election Period, which runs from October 15 through December 7 each year, enables customers to determine the coverage and benefits that suits their particular needs and make changes for the following year.

Regarding retirement income, Mr. Gosetti said that people want to protect what they have accumulated during their lives and ensure that they will have enough money for their retirement, whether it be a guaranteed income or assets that they can tap into in case of an emergency. Thinking about how to meet these goals can help people plan for today’s needs and tomorrow’s wants simultaneously. The conundrum is figuring out a way to make sure everything that has been earned does not get lost, according to Gosetti.

“Many clients want to achieve financial stability and

growth, yet they want to lower their financial tax burdens, eliminate fees and generate income they cannot outlive,” he said.

“I like to think of myself as a technically-minded problem solver.”

Arianna Nicola is a Bridal & Formalwear Designer. She is building her brand while still pursuing her other passions in choreography and public relations. From working with fashion week, STYLEWEEK Northeast to teaching 8-10 dance classes per week at TLC Performing Arts. Here is a look at a day in the life of Arianna in the middle of Bridal season.

7:00 AM My alarm goes off without hesitation between 7 and 7:30 each morning, playing some sort of annoying tune that will spark a laugh from not only myself, but my boyfriend Matt as well. I love to sleep in, but unfortunately can only do that every so often & definitely not during Bridal season. I always thought that by 30 I would be a morning person, apparently that does not come with age.

7:30 AM I take out our two dogs, Remi, my 11-yearold Yorkie, and Sadie my 6-year-old rescue. They are 20 pounds different in size, but the little one runs the show.

After I give them their breakfast, I am back downstairs getting ready for my day. My outfit choices are either black leggings and a sweatshirt or dark jeans, 5” heels & a blazer.

There is rarely an in between for me. E 8:00 AM Off to Starbucks I go! I recently figured out the whole order ahead option on the Starbucks app. I am a creature of habit, I order the same Grande Iced Chai with Soy every day. By 8:10, I am in the Garden City area, chai in hand and on my way to West Warwick to my newly renovated studio.

8:30 AM As I pull into the back of the mill in Warwick, I take a second to watch the waterfall that is behind the building. It is so peaceful to watch and listen to the water before a busy and rigorous day. As I get out of my car, I am greeted by the Mill owners’ dog, Cleo! When I have Remi with me, he thinks he is the boss of this 80+ lb. black lab.

Cleo ignores Remi and goes on with her day & I open the door to the unit I share with Blue Studio Design Group, an interior / exterior design firm. ARIANNA NICOLA LLC takes up about a 10 x 16’ space. However, because I am a part of the Blue Studio group, I have access to their bar / kitchen area, conference table & waiting area. Our waiting area is also equipped with a vintage pinball machine, which is always a hit with all who come for a fitting.

9:30 AM I am a neat freak when it comes to my studio space. My space in the mill is an open concept, no designs are left strewn about the space. Every night everything is neatened, projects and gowns are locked away for safe keeping. This means though, every morning I must take everything back out. I roll my working rack out into the room to look over where I ended the night before. Currently, I have about 10-15 projects in the works. This week I am working on three royal cathedral length veils with hand beaded lace trim, one custom mother of the bride gown, an heirloom christening gown made from the material of her mothers’ wedding dress, a custom bridal shower look, alterations for a Quinceañera & her court, three flower girl dresses, and following up with inquiries after a successful show at STYLEWEEK BRIDAL. 11:00 AM By 11:00 AM I am in the full swing of it. My mind is always working on multiple projects at once.

to another. When you are a one woman show, you have to be working and thinking about everything, all at once, all the time. I do however some days get to call upon my savior, my best friend, my mama Jane who selflessly will give her time to cut fabric, pin 20-layer tulle skirts together & keep me sane. It is much more fun when she is in the studio with me. Today we have “The Office” on in the background, one of our favorite shows. I think to myself how lucky I am to get to spend time with my mom during the work day.

My design process always starts with the fabric. Once I find the fabric, inspiration takes over. I sketch my ideas in a lined notebook with a fine tipped sharpie. Mind you, I have every top of the line sketch pad and drawing tool in my home office, but my inspiration always comes to hand within my work notebook.

My sketches are messy & detailed and are always the jumping point to start draping or making patterns. Some elements of my designs will change as they come to fruition, but you can always see the process throughout.

12:30 PM Today I have a full day of appointments, starting with a lovely mother & daughter duo. This client is throwing a lavish birthday party for her daughter and I have been commissioned to create a one of a kind dress for her daughter. I always keep the colorful thread close for my appointments with children. They are absolutely enthralled by all of the different textures and colors in the room. I find that if they get to hold a spool of thread or wear a bridal tiara, they feel as special as a princess straight out of a movie & are more apt to let me take measurements.

Just as this meeting is done, my next appointment arrives. This time it is a bride who was referred to me from a friend of a previous client. I offer them some celebratory champagne, as I always have it on hand. I never want a bride to feel stressed while planning with me. If they want to celebrate in the afternoon with some bubbly, I have it ready! The wonderful thing about doing business in Rhode Island is the loyalty. I cannot tell you how many times I will ask how a bride or client has heard of me and they will say, “You made my sister’s, friend’s, maid of honor’s daughter a flower girl dress.”

2:00 PM I try to schedule meetings for upcoming fashion events, editorials, and collaborations during the afternoon. Today I am dropping jewelry off to ZAXIE by Stephanie Taylor from our previous collaboration and then bringing some key pieces of my most current collection to a photoshoot in downtown Providence. My collections are always ready for photoshoots right after they are shown on the runway.

3:30 PM By this time, I realize I had forgotten to eat lunch. I stop by quickly to the market back in Cranston for a made to order Italian Gourmet sandwich. By now I think they know my order as soon as I walk in. I stop home quickly to see my pups and make sure they are ok for the rest of the day, until Matt gets home at 5pm. I tell them I will be home soon & kiss them both goodbye.

4:00 PM I have a quick call with the head of an event happening at Harvard that I am in talks to be a part of this upcoming Spring. After that, I quickly answer some emails from the URI, my alma mater and some local papers asking for images from my last show.

4:30 PM – 8:30 PM I am off to TLC Performing Arts, in Cranston to teach my Freshmen company class complied of 12

young girls from ages 8-10. We are working on a fun “character” jazz dance to a song from the “ANNIE” musical. The girls are so excited to be dancing with props this year. For my next class, I switch gears to advanced hip-hop, ages 13-17, where I must stay up to date on literally everything. From the music, to the choreography, I have to look cool. When I started teaching this class ten years ago, it all came a little easier.

After my second class, I always check emails to make sure I am not missing anything important from the day. The last two classes are advanced technique, where I work on stretching, turns, leaps, & quick choreography. This year I have decided to use a song that speaks to the audience and dancers on a deeper level, touching upon bullying, school safety in an emergency, and treating everyone with respect. I think it is important to express and dance about real issues affecting today’s society. I have the class sit and really listen to the lyrics, that are not always easy to hear and do improvisation (free choreography) to emulate how they would feel in that situation. Last on a Thursday is Pointe class. A nice cool down and relaxing vibe to end the night.

8:30 PM During my Bridal season, which differs from the norm, I head back to my studio, for a few more hours of planning and sewing. My crunch time for wedding season is during these winter months as most weddings take place from May – October. I am already scheduling projects and brides into the fall of 2020. Matt is so incredible and often delivers a home cooked meal to my studio. I take a break to sit in our bar area and enjoy a quick meal. He usually will bring the pups in to see me and run around the space, until they quickly tire out.

9:00 PM Matt and the pups leave, and I continue to work on embellishing a lace neckline of a bridal shower look for a client.

I find this to be the most peaceful part of designing. I have always found it calming to sit and hand sew lace or beading to a design. I could do it mindlessly for hours.

10:30 PM I am starting to feel the weight of the day. I finish up my last stitch on the bridal shower dress and begin to layout the following days projects. This consists of layout out slopers, cutting fabric, and making lists! For every garment, I have pages set aside in my notebook; at the end of each night, I write every step that is needed for completion down on the pages. I get much satisfaction crossing things off those lists!

11:00 PM I lock up and head to my car. It is dark in the lot, but I can still hear the peaceful waterfall flowing into the river. On my way home, I always call my mom, to tell her about my day, ask her what her thoughts are on certain projects and opportunities, and connect with her before I get home.

11:30 PM I can never go straight to bed. I have to sit and decompress. After I shower, I sit on the couch, scroll through my phone quickly and clear my mind from all creativity. Being that all of my jobs use the right side of my brain, I have to let it rest. I do this by popping on an episode of something funny, something easy. Right now, Matt and I are re-watching CURB YOUR ENTUSIASM. I find that I think similarly to Larry David. I speak my mind, I am somewhat sarcastic, but always have good intentions.

12:00 AM I start my nightly skin routine, because I am turning 30 this year & the wrinkles don’t bounce back like they used to.

By Jenn Lombari An inflatable Garfield in the window of an empty storefront had been taunting traffic for weeks with a sign that read “COMING SOON.” Finally… Friday January 25, 2019.

It’s an hour into opening day at Top Shelf Vintage Co. The stereo is setting a party atmosphere; a celebration. A table with complimentary PVD Donuts and cold Narragansett tall boys present themselves to curious shoppers as they enter the new business at 35 Exchange Street in up and coming downtown Pawtucket. They planned to be partying all weekend.

Men and women of all ages are shopping and chatting with each other as they comb through the racks and tables filled with items from the past, making friends and reminiscing.

Owner, Annie Schisler, is beaming with excitement, greeting everyone and answering questions. Her partner, Douglas, is tending to the shoppers at the checkout counter. Both “‘90s kids” and longtime collectors, they were running out of room at home.

They had been selling steadily online, for 4-5 years, but as inventory grew, so did the need for a brick and mortar location.

It started 8-10 years ago when she was in high school, with one item found at a thrift store, and then it became an addiction for Annie. She loved the hunt! Treasure hunting for that one item that topped what she found the last time; and then another and another. She began selling to feed her own collection. So as you can imagine, new items are being added to the store regularly. Douglas is in charge of menswear, and Annie puts her skills and passion to work stocking kid’s and women’s wear, toys, houseware, and other staples from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s.

The ‘90s revival is in effect and what is old is becoming new again. Not only were the clothes made better, the more you washed the clothing, instead of falling apart, the softer and more comfortable it seemed to get. And here it is, in great condition, ready to be worn again.

MOVIE REVIEW Green Book Peter Farrelly is known for silly sometimes raunchy Hollywood comedy. Together with his brother, Bobby, the director duo are known for iconic and outrageous popcorn comedies such as Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, Shallow Hal and Me, Myself & Irene. Green Book is without a doubt the most mature film that Farrelly has directed and possibly owing to the fact that it’s been almost 25 years since Ben Stiller found something hanging from his ear. Or maybe… Peter just isn’t as crazy without his partner in crime.

It may be more serious in tone, but it’s still very much a comedy with all the bells, whistles and understated bromance. The story follows a working class Italian-American bouncer who finds himself jobless for two months. Nabbing an opportunity to drive an African-American classical pianist on a tour of American South, they both shape and shift each other’s perceptions as well as the people around them. It may sound a bit like Driving Miss Daisy or The Intouchables with a role reversal in both instances, but it’s based on a true story… so who can argue with that?

Watching the trailer for Green Book gives you a good idea of whether this will be your kind of movie or not. One surprise was to discover that Green Book stars Viggo Mortensen. The actor has been chalking up one terrific performance after another in his bid for a golden statuette and has almost shaken off the Aragorn image completely with a series of singular, solid to brilliant turns. Almost unrecognisable in this performance, he’s packed on the kilos and made the New York Italian-American accent second nature.

Moving from playing a complete opposite in Captain Fantastic, Mortensen demonstrates why he’s one of the finest actors working today… shedding his skin for a much bulkier frame.

An unassuming lead, the gaudy Chris Farley-esque bouncer is counterbalanced by Moonlight’s towering Mahershala Ali, who is controlled, gentle, dignified and guarded. You wouldn’t ordinarily expect the two to have chemistry on paper, but they lay it on thick as two men from completely different worlds. Trying to get along, influence each other for the better (whatever that means), they go about chastising, ribbing and helping one another in a funny and even touching road movie. One a gifted mentor and the other, a bodyguard chaffeur, ready to rumble with the racist element in the South, it becomes a case of the wing man tapping in to rescue his dignified and resolute boss.

The changeover is refreshing, exploring race relations quite frankly and not pulling any punches from a time in America when racism was a rich tradition in some parts and so-called negro travelers would have to adhere to a book of coloured-friendly motels and

hotels. Beautiful vistas, immersive mis-en-scene and many clever insights into the day and age make for a compelling, incisive and engaging movie. Crisp writing, memorable characters, plenty of feel good fun and trip into the mindset of 1962 America make for a heartfelt and all-round film.

While it’s not a politically correct film, it’s a timely, thoughtful and enjoyable enough to overcome its limitations and “white saviour” tag. Rich in entertainment value, finely crafted enough to serve as an art film and just crowd-pleasing enough to ensure you’ll watch it again one day, it makes for a life-affirming, deeply human film experience.

“Green Book,” which received a total of five Oscar nominations, won three, including best picture.

Mahershala Ali took home the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role as Dr. Don Shirley, the pianist, in the film and Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga and Brian Currie won for best original screenplay.

Lang’s Bowlarama

By Patrick Burke A fun and iconic location in Cranston, Lang’s Bowlarama was rejuvenated by the family’s third-generation, Rich and Dave Lang, who have put their all into preserving their namesake lanes and the history behind their grandfather’s dream.

If you’re a bowling fan – or not – and haven’t been to Lang’s, you owe yourself the experience. It’s a must-visit classic for many reasons, a true homage to the spirit of a man and a game.

Lang’s has all the normal fun of targeting those tricky 10 pins with friends, plus the Lang twist on other bowling alley trappings. They’ve got Atomic bowling under black lights to fit that Atomic Age aesthetic, a mid-century modern motif from furniture and lobby pictures, down to the preserved office of the founder, which was off-limits for 30 years. The 125-person, recently-renovated Nelson Event Center, hosts concerts and is open for private events of all kinds, which can be separate from the lanes, or can include some rounds. The 40 lanes are equipped with their own modern bar and lounge, a state-of-the-art kitchen that can do anything from prime rib to wings and tacos, along with lane-side servers and all kinds of specials.

The invention and wide implementation of the mechanical pinsetter, and other advancements and amenities, helped the popularity of bowling grow in the post-WWII years. The 1940s-‘60s are referred to as the golden age of bowling: alleys popped up around new suburbias, the sport became widelytelevised, more and more amateur leagues formed, and professionals signed the first-ever million dollar endorsement deals. Even President Harry S. Truman added the first two lanes to the White House in 1947.

In 1960, right in the thick of national 10-pin exuberance, Ed Lang – a salesman and self-starter who led a moving-picture

story life – later realized his dream and opened a bowling center on Niantic Avenue. Throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s, bowling was booming, and Lang’s was a happening joint, even hosting the pro tour in 1976. Ed’s son, Bruce, joined on in 1972 – after graduating from URI, then Harvard Business School, then a tour in the US Army, then time as a CBS News executive – and Lang’s was buzzing with the father-son dynamic.

In 1983, the Lang family leased the alley out to AMF, a North American bowling chain operator. It would be nearly 30 years, right around the time of Bruce Lang’s passing, when his two sons, current owners Rich and Dave, helped to take Lang’s back under family control and get it in a shape Ed would be proud of.

“It seemed the Lang Family era was over,” a quote on the website states about the end of the AMF days. “By the summer of 2012, the center had fallen into a state of neglect. One day in June, the skies parted and a voice called on grandsons, Rich and Dave, to step up to the plate.”

“I knew Bruce Lang,” General Manager Carl DeRosa said.

“Right around the time he was passing was when [Lang’s] was changing hands. The passion that the father had for wanting his bowling center to be the best it could be, and it was in the worst possible shape ever.”

“Just out of respect for that man,” DeRosa said. “And the two sons, [I wanted to help.]”

DeRosa had been traveling around the country and managing bowling alleys for years with AMF, and he found Lang’s to be a special place. When Bruce’s kids wanted to get the bowling alley back, DeRosa helped them revive it to its former glory. Ed Lang’s office was off limits to anyone except Rich and Dave for the whole of the AMF period, and it looks the same as the day it was locked off.

Lang’s Bowlarama is a huge community supporter, and they are preparing for their fifth-annual Ed Lang Memorial Car and Bike Show on September 29, which benefits the RI Community Food Bank with donated non-perishable food items.

The Nelson was originally a bar called Skyline because one could view the Providence skyline from a stool, but it was converted to a private event space close to two years ago. How to Handle Market Moves After one of the longest bull markets in history, stocks experienced some major ups and downs toward the end of 2018. This increased market volatility grabbed headlines and caused some investors to feel anxious about potential losses to their portfolios. While it’s a natural reaction for investors to wonder if and how national and global news may affect their savings, it’s important to take a step back and remember that more frequent stock moves are actually a return to usual market activity. And historically, these swings are even healthy for the portfolios of long-term investors because the markets tend to rise over time.

If you are an investor with multiple decades to prepare for retirement, here are three steps to keep in mind when the market moves significantly.

As the sole provider of my family of six, something needed to change drastically.”

How Can I Best Find a Wall Stud??

My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www.LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. If you have ever went to hang a TV or a heavy mirror and just tried to simply nail/screw your mounting hardware randomly on to the wall, you may have been rudely awakened by the object crashing down on you!

The safest way to secure items such as these as well as pictures, plaques, memorabilia, etc., is to do so by nailing/screwing in your mounting hardware directly into the studs that are behind your walls.

A stud is the vertical support portion of your wall’s framing that is inside the wall and that the wallboard and plaster on the inside of your home is attached to (as well as what your exterior wall system is attached to).

There are electronic devices called “stud finders” that when passed over a wall can help you find a stud. Many prefer this method of locating studs.

Although certainly not a bad technique, it is not always my particular method of preference.

When possible, I personally like to use a strong magnet and pass it over the wall.

The magnet will be attracted to the nail or screw that the wallboard is hung by and because the nails/screws will typically be on either side of the front of the stud, the stud should easily be able to be found by marking 2 nail/ screw points within a couple of inches apart from each other horizontally (though most likely at different points vertically) and nailing/screwing in the middle of them.

The above mentioned method will work like a charm in “newer” homes.

In older homes that did not use today’s building methodology, you may have to be a little more creative.

In older homes, I would say to use the above described “magnet”-finding methodology on the baseboards of the room as the trim carpenters often made sure they were nailing directly into the studs.

Another way would be, knowing that your electrical outlets are either fastened to the left or right of a stud, measuring 16” from the left & right sides of the electrical outlet (from both sides of it) and drilling tiny test holes with a small drill bit that is fairly long. You should hit a stud at one of these measured points.

If you are still having a challenge and are able to get in the space above the walls (attic, crawl space, etc.), you may be able to locate the studs from there.

Finding studs in order to properly hang something on your walls can be an enormously frustrating task!

As frustrating as it is however, it is MUCH less frustrating than having a TV or large mirror come crashing down on you after you thought you may have it hung the correct way but were not properly locked into a stud after all!!

K’s Kustoms REPAIR - REBUILD – RECYCLE - CUSTOMS

Joshua Mello, owner of K’s Kustoms, is dedicated to teaching his daughter, Karissa, about how we live in a disposable world and the importance of giving items new life.

Ever since she was a toddler, he was always creating art projects with her out of found objects. With his background as an IT technician, welder, injection molding t e c h n i c i a n , and a patented inventor, along with his passion for cars, Mello found a way to create, love his job, and give back.

Located in Warwick, Rhode Island, he runs the business with co-owner, Rachel Ware. Named after Karissa, this specialty business is dedicated to rescuing unwanted children’s ride-on toys.

Not only are they creating some pretty unique vehicles, but they are also saving a lot of plastic from ending up in the landfill, and the rigid plastic of these toys is one of the most difficult to dispose of. The Rhode

Island Recovery Resource website lists K’s Kustoms as a free pick up and drop off site, and the Woonsocket Transfer Station puts unwanted rideon vehicles and freewheel ride-on vehicles aside for Josh and Rachel to pick up.

Donations are used for parts and then the vehicles are properly broken down and prepared for recycling.

Before anything gets recycled, Josh and Rachel will research if it can be donated. Oftentimes, the vehicles are cleaned and the motors are removed, making them freewheeled; it can then be donated to a daycare or another

organization that can make use of it.

Vehicles can be used by children as young as 1yr old, and up to 7-8 years old, depending on the child’s height and weight. Smaller children can ride until they are 9-10 years old. Karissa has been riding since she was 18 months old. She outgrew her Cozy Coupe and a Pinkolicious toddler quad, so Josh created a one of a kind custom vehicle for her from her two previous favorites and K’s Kustom’s was born from that point on. That build was then donated and others where acquired; from then on it took on a life of its own. As Karissa got older, she started driving ride-on Jeeps and other children’s ride-ons.

When Rachel first met Josh, she would get annoyed while they were out driving around. Any time he saw an uncared for ride-on vehicle in someone’s yard, he wanted to pull over and knock on the homeowner’s

door to ask if they’d like to get rid of it. Now she loves the hunt and gets just as excited about finding a good one.

Karissa is 9 now and she test drives all of the vehicles for her dad. Before selling any of the rebuilds or custom builds, K’s Kustoms does its research and makes sure that there were no recalls on a specific item. Power Wheels, Peg-Perego, Dynacraft, Little Tikes, and Kid Tracks are just some of the brands out there. There are about 25, and K’s Kustoms doesn’t discriminate. They can build from anything.

12V vehicles can travel at 5 mph and 24 volt units can go up to 7 mph. Every vehicle comes with a brand new battery, a charger, and a limited 30 day warranty. The customer benefits from shopping local because K’s Kustoms stands behind their product and warranty. Ride-ons are priced starting at $150 and up, and they also have a value line that starts at $90 and goes up to $130.

Multiple awards and trophies have been given to K’s Kustoms! They have been celebrated at car shows all over Rhode Island. These particular builds usually aren’t for sale.

They are built for Karissa. One notable builds has been a 1960 Mercedes SL300, which was actually a go-kart built into the car. Other memorable builds were the Zombie Apocalypse build and a Custom Digger-Rat Rod. The first award winning car was K’s Gen 5 Camaro SS, which is her version of a Transformer’s Bumblebee.

This year, K’s Kustom’s has partnered with Joe Fiduccia, owner of a 2017 Western Star 5700 that is the only known fan built replica of Optimus Prime that has legal permission from Hasbro to do so, and is known as “Optimus is Here.”

He is teaming up with K’s Kustoms on an amazing project that is sure to make some smiles. Right now the project

NORTH SMITHFIELD AUTO CENTER KEEPS CUSTOMERS MOVING Owner Mike McAlister’s 45 years of fixing autos and jets is the driving force.

By Mark Berger With the seasons changing from the winter to spring, cars need to operate efficiently. Challenges ranging from potholes and salt to dead batteries often test drivers’ nerves. They want their vehicle to run smoothly when they get into the driver’s seat.

At North Smithfield Auto Center, a family-owned, AAA-approved business located on 106 North Greenville Road, the five mechanics and service staff are ready to address those needs. Owner Michael McAlister, Sr. purchased the building in 2005, after owning a similar shop in Bellingham, MA. Their mission is completing all types of vehicle repairs, including RI State Inspections, correctly and affordably, while getting motorists back on the road quickly.

“How do I run a good business? In twenty one years, I have been able to figure it out,” said McAlister. “I love doing what I am doing because each day is different.

The people who come in become our friends. They are greeted with a friendly smile from either Karen Ernst (service writer), my wife, Mary Anne, and/or me. The business has grown over the years primarily because of word-of-mouth and networking.

after the program began. McAlister said he may be one of the first technicians to earn the certification. He added that he recertifies every five years to maintain his status. It is something that he takes a lot of pride in having.

McAlister is no stranger to fixing things. He noted being interested in mechanics when he was young. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served during the Vietnam War. While serving overseas, he was named crew chief to fix jet engines.

“Many technicians take the test, pass, and never return to recertify,” he said. “There is so much to learn, and with cars constantly changing and evolving, why would someone in the field not want to keep up with what’s happening? I have maintained this certification for 40 years, and I intend on keeping it active for a long time to come.”

After leaving the Air Force, McAlister attended the Franklin Institute in Boston, MA to become an automotive technician.

He not only left there with a degree in that field, but also with the MacTavish Award as class valedictorian. He went on to work for Wellesley Volkswagen for two decades as a technician. In 1998, he opened Mike McAlister Auto Repairs in Bellingham, where he stayed until moving to North Smithfield in 2006.

His shop also prides themselves on repairing what must be fixed. McAlister said he hates the practice of “up charging” customers for unnecessary services and parts. He sees this when vehicles are close to their warranties expiring. He said that there are those facilities that look to sell the customers on parts that either are not broken or need repairs-but not at his shop.

McAlister said that one of his proudest professional distinctions is being an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified Technician. He originally received the honor in 1979—two years

lift. “This usually leads to an unexpected and high repair bill,” McAlister said.

“A customer might need an oil change, air filter and fluids topped off. That service usually ranges between $50$80. However, another place might sell those same services for $180 by adding unnecessary parts and services (to boost the price). Some places might charge $300 or more at the 30,000-mile checkup, when it should cost a fraction of that,” he explained.

“The best thing to do is to ask questions and become more educated on your car so that you do not get ripped off,” McAlister added. “Most times, it could be a simple solution to a problem or there’s no problem at all. Trusting your auto repair shop and technicians is the key to keeping your vehicle running well.”

“We do not quote or diagnose problems over the telephone; that leaves room for a misdiagnosis. The best thing to do when there might be issues is to make an appointment.

We will inspect your vehicle at no charge to determine the

problem is and how to proceed.”

With spring arriving, McAlister said that drivers should watch out for wear and tear on tires, have fuel injectors cleaned out, ensure belts and hoses are tightened, and check to see that the air conditioner works properly. He said cleaning the fuel injector, along with changing the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, will help improve gas mileage and prevent the car from having major problems. He added that customers do not have to take their cars back to the dealership for maintenance services as long as people stay within their service warranties.

When the McAlisters are not working, they enjoy bowling and spending time with family. They enjoy watching their grandchildren in their sports activities, going on cruises and family get-togethers. They are both active in the networking community. North Smithfield Auto Center is affiliated with the Northern Rhode Island Regional Chamber of Commerce in Lincoln. Mike is a member of the BNI Founders Chapter in Lincoln and Mary Anne belongs to the Polka Dot Powerhouse Networking Group, which they all credit to helping grow the business in North Smithfield.
