Smithfield Welcomes Brewology as Northern RI’s Most Preferred Hotspot By: Nina DiNobile At any given time, seven days a week, Aria Amico can be found working in a variety of capacities at “Brewology,” to pitch in and do whatever it takes to support her staff at a cafe/lounge in Smithfield that has become very popular in a very short period of time. Brewology is referred to as a cafe/lounge because that’s exactly what it is, and the same patrons that frequent Brewology during the daytime can often be found enjoying the night scene at this lively, yet comfortable new establishment.

Along with co-owners, Mike Dipalma, Albert Gizzarelli, and Arthur Paone, Aria scoped the state for an area that would best suit their new endeavor, to provide a unique social experience to the surrounding communities and eventually landed in a very active business area of Smithfield, at an easy to access plaza on Cedar Swamp Road.

First opening their doors on March 24th of this year, one would think it would take some time to become a community hotspot, but at Brewology it happened much sooner than anyone could have anticipated.

There is no doubt that it is because of the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, along with their delicious coffee choices and flavors. The coffee at Brewology is flavored by the bean itself.

Those flavors include french roast, banana hazelnut, caramel toffee, french vanilla, cinnamon sensation, hazelnut, coconut cream pie, and mudslide.

While offering a variety of coffees by day and cocktails by night, Brewology’s atmosphere is intimate and cozy for patrons of all ages. Nowadays, young people especially, are quite particular about the type of coffee they prefer, and Brewolgy offers a menu of drinks that will satisfy every palate.

During the hours of and 6am and 4 pm, Monday thru Friday and 7am to 4pm on the weekends, you will find patrons in full conversation, relaxing on the large leather couches, while sipping on their preferred type of iced or hot coffee, protein shake, latte, cappuccino, mochaccino, chai tea, or thick and flavorful smoothie.

The daytime food menu consists of light fare, all made freshly on site and which partners perfectly with their variety of tempting drinks. Some of the popular fare are their huge muffins and bagels, to a customer favorite, avocado toast, to sandwiches and a choice of three types of Acai bowls, chock full of the healthy Acai fruit, topped with sweet strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and other ingredients of your choosing such as peanut butter, coconut, honey, and topped with a perfect amount of crisp granola.

At 4pm each day, the doors at Brewology close, but not for long. At 6pm, the cafe transforms into a lounge with a well stocked bar where martinis, cocktails, wine, and beer are served, as well as light bites and desserts. By Brian J. Lowney The beautiful town of Warren, Rhode Island has developed a well-deserved reputation for its eclectic mix of delightful small eateries, stores, galleries, bakeries, and so much more.

It’s almost impossible to spend just a couple of hours there so it’s no wonder why many visitors arrive early and spend the day in the seaside community and plan to return another time to see what they’ve missed.

One of the newest additions to the town’s colorful restaurant scene is “The Happy Place Creperie,” whose owners, Aleks and Ivana Janjic, offer a variety of delicious crepes, omelets, and beverages, for a growing number of customers of all ages to enjoy.

Aleks, a native of Serbia, who has lived in the United States for more than 20 years, shares that he’s been making crepes - a thin pancake - since he was a young child.

“This has been a family recipe for generations,” he begins.

“I was smaller than the stovetop when I started helping my mother, but I wanted to make the crepes.”

After earning an art degree in Europe, the talented potter, now restaurant owner, moved to New Mexico for graduate school and eventually worked in fine dining restaurants.

“I once owned an art gallery in Puerto Rico, traveled in the Caribbean, and enjoyed a few loops around the world,” he recalls, smiling. “I’ve decided that crepes are always good and they make people very happy.”

After marrying and working at upscale restaurants on Martha’s Vineyard, the couple and their three children settled in the Ocean State. Meanwhile, Aleks never lost his passion for creating delicious recipes and making crepes.

“We like the size of Providence and the people here are very nice,” Aleks continues. “We live in Providence and opened 14 Shop In RI

the creperie in Warren last August. “Why our crepe shop’s name is ‘Happy Place’ you will find on your first visit. Our space is beautiful, the crepes are delicious, and everyone loves being here. We already have a magnificent percentage of returning guests.”

He explains that the crepes served in the restaurant are unique in the way they are prepared.

“They are French-style, but I cook them my own special way,” he reveals, adding that the couple uses only organic milk, free-range eggs, sunflower oil, and unbleached flour.

“Our crepes are very delicious and can be either savory or sweet,” Aleks continues. “There is a misconception that crepes have to be sweet or served as a small dessert. They can be a full meal. Our crepes are the ‘real deal and they are a full meal.’”

The Happy Place Creperie’s extensive menu has more than 30 crepe choices, including several vegetarian options, including a delicious crepe filled with avocado, ricotta cheese, pesto, and roasted pumpkin seeds. Another choice features artichokes, black olive tapenade, cheddar cheese, and organic spinach.

“One of my favorites is the savory crepe made with ovenroasted turkey, brie cheese, and spinach,” Aleks tells.

“Another delicious selection features imported red pepper spread, feta cheese, and ham. It’s a little-bit spicy and a tad smokey.”

Aleks emphasizes the importance of quality ingredients in food preparation. “I try to source organically and responsibly grown food,” he adds.

Working Towards a Healthier Tomorrow

As one of the most heavily regulated in the nation, the hospitality industry was subjected to constant shutdowns and changing operational guidelines throughout the pandemic. It’s no wonder that workers in the industry have suffered tremendous stressors as they navigated working, managing their own health, caring for families, going to school, and tackling other responsibilities.

Rhode Island is no exception, and mental health struggles within the hospitality industry have become more evident, and so have workers’ expectations for support and understanding from their employers.

While symptoms present in a multitude of ways, and at times can be hard to recognize in another person, mental health challenges can be as damaging on an individual as any physical illness.

According to Mental Health America, nearly 80% of over 11,000 survey respondents across 17 different industries agree that work-related stress affects their interpersonal relationships; just 40% agree that their employers invest in developing supportive managers; and a mere 34% agree that their businesses’ leadership openly discusses mental health.

Throughout the pandemic, the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA) has pointed its members and the industry’s workers in the direction of many valuable mental health resources, all of which are listed and available on the website, www. rihospitality.org, and many are free. There, visitors will find links to services that provide telemedicine mental health and medical visits made possible by Teledoc Health, stress management resources provided by Active Minds, support networks like Ben’s Friends, Optum Crisis Text Line, and many more.

RIHA has also created a number of campaigns and initiatives to help improve the work environment for the hospitality industry’s workforce, including the nationally recognized “Please Be Kind” campaign, which reminds consumers to be courteous and patient with hospitality employees during the ongoing labor shortage. Although it was launched in 2021, they still encourage their members and Rhode Islandbased hospitality businesses to download the items in their “Please Be Kind” Toolkit, including their mental health break room poster and to display that signage to gently remind clients to treat staff with respect.

Since the initial shutdown of the hospitality industry in March of 2020, few seem to have made it through the pandemic emotionally unscathed. While things may seem to be returning to normal for most, that is not the reality for everyone. Many still fear the virus, and for those who had a bad case themselves or who paid the emotional toll of watching a loved one suffer and/or die, the effects of the pandemic are still very real.

Please do not suffer in silence. Utilize the resources that are available and be honest about how you are feeling, even if it seems scary. We have all lost enough these past couple of years; we do not need to lose each other, too. Help is available.

While in the past, it was considered taboo to talk about mental health in the workplace, times are definitely changing and many organizations and businesses are placing a greater emphasis on employee wellness, which can help with retention, recruitment, engagement, and company culture – all of which are at the foundation of every positive work environment.

After what we have all collectively gone through these last two-and-a-half years, every business, regardless of industry, can provide meaningful mental health resources for employees. For example, Germans prefer all types of sausages and soft meat spreads. Italians adore their cured pork and sausages. The Spanish and Portuguese add smoked fish and seafood to their sausages. Even the British have their own variations. Americans, too, prefer their own cured meats, including hams, summer sausage, beef jerky, and liverwurst.

Post Pandemic Fitness Getting Back on Track

By Susan Gazerro Gyms are now starting to be fully open and most experts predict they will be packed! Here we are, finally, post Covid and the pandemic has changed our fitness habits and the trends that will shape our workouts now and in the future.

Gyms will be more crowded than ever. Although some predicted that the pandemic inspired home fitness, research suggests that the majority of people are rushing back to their gym. After months, even years for some, most are tired of being at home. People want to get back to fitness facilities so they can enjoy their favorite workouts with friends, familiar faces, and just other people in general. Most people need other people to stay motivated. I run, sometimes alone, but if I have someone next to me, not even necessarily a running partner or friend, but just a body, it pushes me to run longer and faster. Similar to bars, restaurants, and sports events, fitness is experiencing a need for togetherness as people make up for lost time, with a renewed appreciation for live social settings.

This pandemic has created a whole new generation of fitness fans. More people, for one reason or another, have taken up fitness. Pets also became very popular during the pandemic, and pets and fitness go together. Dogs need exercise too so if you got yourself a dog, you now have a walking partner. It’s a win/win. I once heard, “If you see an overweight dog, the owner is not getting enough exercise.”

Covid has been awful, but has also been helpful in that people realized they need to focus on the things that are most important. Family, friends and health. Most of us have realized that the everyday hustle and bustle is not what really matters. Our health, our family, friends, and relationships are what truly matter. Covid made us all slow down in the sense of “living.” Covid caused us to stop, think, and realize what really matters. Taking care of yourself is not selfish, it is actually just the opposite. Taking care of your physical health is not only doing you good, it’s doing everyone around you good. You are a better mom, daughter, friend, etc. because you feel good about yourself and everything else in life is now easier. When one is healthy, even obstacles in life are easier to deal with.

Now that the pandemic is behind us, focus on you and what makes you happy. I truly believe that

inner happiness starts with how you feel physically, not what people say about you or buy for you, or what you can buy for yourself. If you don’t feel good physically, it’s almost impossible to feel good mentally.

A orney General Candidate Wants to Put “Law Above Politics”

by Mark Berger “The Attorney General wields a lot of power in deciding who to prosecute and which cases should move forward,” he said. “The current Attorney General is putting himself into the fray politically by advocating for passage of partisan bills and not staying in his lane to enforce the laws already on the books. If I am elected to serve in this capacity, I will do everything within my powers to ensure Rhode Island law is impartially enforced and to protect and defend the state and US constitutions.

Calenda laid out several points he would like to accomplish while in office:

A lifelong resident devoted toward serving the citizens of this state, Charles “Chas” Calenda declared his intention to run for the state’s Attorney General seat based on his career in prosecution and his belief the office has not lived up to its billing of seeking “justice for all.”

He seeks the Republican nomination to face off against Democratic incumbent Peter Neronha in November.

Calenda, who was raised in East Greenwich and currently resides in West Greenwich with his wife, Stephanie, said the current office holder should be the state’s chief law enforcement officer. Instead, he said Attorney General Neronha has used the office to play partisan politics and not be an advocate for the people of Rhode Island. Calenda said that he would use the office to effectively litigate cases based on their merits without political considerations for anyone involved and hopefully serve as a meaningful check and balance on the government itself when it steps out of line, legally speaking.

First and foremost, he wants to be the “minister of justice” in this position, the moniker given to prosecutors by the United States Supreme Court.

It is the job of a prosecutor to do the right thing in every case all the time and to seek the just outcomes in every matter that comes before the Office.

Second, to be more aggressive in prosecuting violent and habitual offenders. He said too many people who happen to be career criminals are given light sentences, serve their time and continue their destructive paths. Calenda noted a recent case where Neronha’s office gave a six-time convicted felon a suspended sentence in 2019 for his seventh and eighth felony convictions. On New Years Day in 2022, this same individual, while still on probation for the 2019 cases, allegedly killed a 17-year old East Greenwich girl on Route 95 after crashing into her vehicle in an incident the victim’s family has described as “depraved.” He said that instance demonstrates the need to be more proactive in keeping violent criminal accountable in meaningful ways so we can avoid such tragic consequences.

Third, make training more of a priority for incoming attorneys. Calenda said the number of experienced attorneys working in the office

is declining. While it’s good to have new hires, the Office has no formal, in-house training programs that will assist the less-experienced attorneys to become more effective advocates for the people of the state.

“Formal training doesn’t exist in this capacity. There is no mentoring program that young attorneys can use to get the help and support they need to succeed.

They are often unable or unprepared to think quickly on their feet while in court and that not only hurts the credibility of the Office, but it also hurts the people state as well. We need to be better at bridging the gap when the more experienced attorneys leave and less experienced ones replace them,” he said.

Finally, Calenda would like to review and possibly change the standards needed to obtain firearms permits. He said too many law-abiding citizens are unable to obtain a permit because of the nearlyunlimited discretion given to the Attorney General to decide whether or not to issue these permits. “Too many times, law-abiding citizens are turned away by the Attorney General because this Attorney General doesn’t believe they have a need for a permit,” he added. Calenda would review applications with an objective standard and with more transparency in the application process so law-abiding citizens have a realistic chance to exercise their rights under the Second Amendment.

As for his slogan, “Law Above Politics”, Calenda wants to look at each case individually and make decisions based on the facts and applicable law—not based on who stands to gain or lose the most or any political ramifications that may result. He cited one recent example involving Jeffrey Britt, who worked for then-House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello. He was charged with money laundering and could have landed him up to 20 years in prison, if convicted.

Britt was found not guilty of the charge. Worse, the

judge overseeing that case said the not only did the prosecution not have enough evidence to prove their case, they didn’t have any evidence to prove any crime had been committed. Calenda called this a prime example of a political prosecution. This was but one incident that helped him decide to run for office.

If elected, Calenda does not want to turn this into a stepping stone for a higher title.

“I would like to serve the community as a public servant,” he said. “I am not aspiring to run for another office in a few years. This is what I want to do. With my experience as a prosecutor in this Office for 12 years and my experience now in private practice, that is what separates me from the other candidates.”

Chas received his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, where he also received his Juris Doctor. He was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar in 2006. He served in the Attorney General’s Office under former Attorneys General Patrick Lynch and Peter Kilmartin until 2018. Calenda currently practices at The Law Firm of Inman and Tourgee in Coventry, where he is employed full time.

What You Should Know About Managing Aging Parents’ Finances By: Carrie McPherson Making financial decisions takes time, attention and energy at any age. In the case of elderly adults, it may become increasingly difficult to manage daily finances, particularly if their health is declining or they’re experiencing a cognitive issue. If you’re providing support to aging parents – or plan to in the future – here is some advice on how to handle the situation and prepare for what’s to come.

Don’t wait to start talking about finances. While it may be uncomfortable to ask your parents to discuss their finances with you, it’s essential that you are familiar with their intentions for care and what plans they have in place. The first time you broach the subject, emphasize that you are looking for only a high-level overview so that you can have more peace-of-mind that your parents will be well cared for. This initial conversation can then help set the groundwork for future discussions.

Create a contact list. If your parents experience a sudden change in a health that affects their ability to manage their own affairs, it’s important to have a game plan for what happens next. If you anticipate stepping in to pay bills, make insurance claims and handle other financial tasks, start by asking your parents for a list of contact information for the professionals they work with and where their accounts are held. Keep in mind that you may need to be an authorized user or power of attorney to be allowed access to certain accounts. Consult a lawyer to talk through what permission may be necessary for you to step in if the need arises.

Build a support network. Talk with siblings or other trusted family members about what a possible care plan could look like for your parents. While this conversation can be tough to initiate, know that it’s often easier to bring everyone together while your parents are still healthy and in good mental capacity. Discuss who can realistically provide support – and in what way and at what cost. Proactively deciding who can drive your parents to doctor appointments, manage financial affairs, care for their home, and handle other tasks can help avoid a strain on your time and energy down the road.

Anticipate future lifestyle changes and challenges.

Even if they aren’t yet needed, explore the options and costs of various assisted living and memory care services. And, check your parents’ insurance policies to see if and how services might be covered. You may also want to decide whether their home or yours could be modified to provide additional space or comforts, such as wheelchair access. Knowing what choices exist and how your parents feel about each one can help you make future decisions with more confidence.

Know your rights at work. The Federal Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) allows covered employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to provide care for a family member with a serious health condition.1 Consult your Human Resources

(HR) department to learn what your company’s policies are for supporting employees who are caring for a parent and how to initiate a claim if you need to. Many employers have access to resources and support groups to help you manage your responsibilities at home and at work.

Maintain momentum on your own financial goals.

It’s understandable to want to provide your parents with as much support as you can. It’s prudent to look at your finances to see how much support you could provide (if it’s needed) without jeopardizing your own retirement and future health care needs.

It’s hard to imagine – let alone talk about – what caring for an ill or aging parent may look like. For additional support in having family conversations, evaluating financial options and creating a plan for your parents, contact your financial advisor and lawyer. Why are you buying a second home?

You may be looking for a weekend getaway reserved for you and your family. Or you may want a rental property that generates income. There’s no right or wrong answer, but how you use the property will have financial implications. You’ll want to understand how these distinctions will affect your property taxes, insurance requirements and income taxes, including capital gains tax when it comes time to sell.

How will you pay for your second home?

Purchasing with cash avoids lender’s fees and the burden of a monthly mortgage payment. But it also makes your money less accessible in case of emergency. Financing your second property also has its downside. Lenders tend to require large down payments on second mortgages. Mortgage points, closing costs and pre-paid escrow add up. And you’ll have another mortgage payment to manage every month.

General Manager John Durrani hopes those looking for inventory should bring in their used car to take advantage of several dealer incentives.

“Anyone trading in either their used or certified pre-owned cars will receive an additional $1,000 over book value,” he said. “There isn’t a better time for anybody to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more than it’s ever going to be worth.”

The dealership has back orders for weeks, and sometimes months on certain makes and models. Durrani said that the market has been “pretty crazy.” With few options on their lots, announcing trade-ins bonuses have become critical.

Durrani also said that people currently have the means to either purchase a new vehicle or one of the very-limited selection on the premises. The ask remains because of higher-than-usual requests, he said.

“We are appealing to the public for used vehicles. Simply put, we still don’t have the inventory to adequately fulfill orders,” Durrani said.

To help facilitate the need for more certified, pre-owned vehicles onto their lot, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of the book value for any used cars. It does not matter whether the customer decides to purchase a car from their lot.

“We will buy your trade, even if you don’t purchase a car from us,” he added.

The dealership holds a monthly private sale. This month’s event is scheduled for Saturday, June 25, and Sunday, June 26, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, by appointment only. Those who attend will be expected to follow social guidelines but also have access to their inventory. Managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives.
