part of that neighborhood for more than a century after emigrating from Sicily and Naples, Italy. His family grew up close to the area, and when he opened his restaurant on 441 Atwells Ave. in Providence three years ago, it was a homecoming for him and his family.
“I left in 1989 to work in Las Vegas and Florida at various Italian festivals,” said Palmisano, who is a third-generation feast festival promoter and a well-known local philanthropist. Our family loves the area and has been a part of this community for years. When this space (for the restaurant) was available, it was like coming home again,” he continued.
The restaurant employs a dozen people and prides itself on serving dishes with a nod to the “Old Country.” Diners can feast on several signature dishes, including their bone-in veal chops that are so big that they take up the entire plate, their linguini and clams and their Italian stuffed artichokes. Patrons can also dive into their fresh fish dishes, chicken or veal parmigiana with pasta, or perhaps for dessert, their amazingly delicious homemade cannolis.
Perhaps their calling card is their "World Famous Expresso Martinis,” among other specialty cocktails that are infused with rosemary, ginger and other herbs to give them an authentic flair and taste.
Palmisano said that his goal for operating a successful restaurant is simple: “I want people to feel like they are eating at my house.”
He noted about how meals are cultivated back in Italy. “It starts with visiting the local butcher shop for the freshest meat, then walking to the garden to select the vegetables, and maybe to the local store to pick up a bottle of wine. Palmisano said that the restaurant strives to maintain this tradition because “farm to table” offers the best quality and flavors for their customers.
“I hope that when customers visit Anthony’s Italian Cuisine, they enjoy a little piece of Italy with every made-to-order dish,” he said.
The restaurant is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The bar remains open one hour after closing.
They also cater events and have daily specials and promotions. For more details about these upcoming events, please call 401273-5900. More details may be found by visiting their website at www.AnthonysonFederalHill.com.

New TSA Technology Assesses If You Are Who You Say You Are
A passenger walks up to an airport security checkpoint, slips an ID card into a slot, and looks into a camera atop a small screen. The screen flashes “Photo Complete,” and the person walks through—all without having to hand over their identification to the Transportation Security Administration officer sitting behind the screen. It’s all part of a pilot project by the TSA to assess the use of facial recognition technology at a number of airports across the country. “What we are trying to do with this is aid the officers to actually determine that you are who you say you are,” says Jason Lim, identity management capability manager for the TSA, during a recent demo of the technology for reporters at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
The technology is currently in 16 airports. In addition to Baltimore, it’s being used at Reagan National near Washington, DC, as well as at airports in Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Jose, and Gulfport-Biloxi and Jackson in Mississippi. However, it’s not at every TSA checkpoint, so not every traveler going through those airports would necessarily experience it. The effort comes at a time when the use of various forms of technology to enhance security and streamline procedures is only increasing. TSA says the pilot is voluntary and accurate, but critics have raised concerns about questions of bias in facial recognition technology and possible repercussions for passengers who want to opt out.
Travelers put their driver’s license into a slot that reads the card or place their passport photo against a card reader. Next, they look at a camera on a screen which captures their image and compares it to their ID. The technology is both checking to make sure the people at the airport match the ID and it is, in fact, real.

Shop In RI Selects Sugarbush Resort, Vermont as their #1 Skiing Getaway on the East Coast!
Shop In RI Selects: Cape May, New Jersey as their secret getaway of the month.
Feel in need off those chanics neering non-stop
Cape May, New Jersey, is an enchanting coastal town that offers a captivating blend of history, natural beauty, and small-town charm. Nestled on the southern tip of the state, Cape May boasts pristine beaches, picturesque Victorian architecture, and a vibrant cultural scene that make it a must-visit destination. History buffs will be delighted by the town’s rich past, evident in its numerous preserved buildings and fascinating museums. The Cape May Lighthouse stands tall as a beacon of maritime history, inviting visitors to climb its steps for breathtaking views. Nature lovers will revel in the area’s natural wonders, including the Cape May Point State Park, which serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds. From relaxing beach days and boutique shopping to exquisite dining experiences and lively festivals, Cape May offers an idyllic escape for those seeking tranquility and exploration.
Sugarbush is an overlooked gem among its peers, with many skiers heading to nearby Killington, Stowe, or Mad River Glen over this double mountain resort. So why shouldn’t you do the same? To put it simply, Sugarbush offers practically everything that those more popular ski areas boast, minus the crowds. So if you fancy schussing down a freshly groomed slope without queuing for a lift or dodging snowploughers this could be just the place for you!
Elon Musk Is Expanding His Vegas Tunnel Network
Elon Musk’s Boring Company has received approval to expand its “Vegas Loop” system, adding 18 stations to bring the total to 69. The goal of the tunnel system is to alleviate road traffic. Unfortunately, it’s not as futuristic as it sounds. Instead of high-speed shuttles, riders are transported in Teslas driven by humans, often driving below 30 mph. And while the expansion in Las Vegas represents a vote of confidence in Musk’s vision, it also highlights the discrepancy between the promised hyperloop and the actual system being implemented.
Terrain: The resort is made up of two interconnected mountains, Lincoln Peak, where the majority of trails are, and Mount Ellen. Other lower peaks include Castle Rock, Gadd Peak and North Lynx. For the type of gnarly terrain you would expect from Mad River Glen, just hop aboard the Castle Rock Double chair to Castle Rock. From the top at 3,812 ft, you’ll have the steep double black chutes of Lift Line and Rumble to get stuck into. If clocking up maximum vertical drop is more your thing then you’ll find the slopes here laid out much better for top-to-bottom shredding than at Killington. Even if you ski all 111 trails here, there’s also 2,000 ac of backcountry to explore in the Slide Brook Basin area!

news for Boring, as not meeting capacity goals could cause hefty fines. Still, Boring will finance the tunnels, while the casinos and hotels will fund the stations. The success of the Vegas Loop will depend on the company’s ability to improve upon traditional tunneling methods and offer a faster, cheaper, and more efficient alternative to above-ground transportation options.
Town: If all that wasn’t enough, Sugarbush is generally a notch cheaper than pricey Stowe, but not at the sacrifice of luxury. For lavish lodgings, look no further than Lincoln Peak Village. For these reasons and more, when it comes to the most practical ski destination in Vermont, Sugarbush is a fantasic choice for a winter weekend getaway!
Boring had to demonstrate the ability to move 4,400 passengers per hour to get an expansion permit for the tunnel. TechCrunch reported in 2020 that the system is likely only capable of carrying 1,200 people per hour—a quarter of the promised capacity. That’s not good

This is a development that will bear watching because Boring hasn’t had the best track record with other cities. For example, the Wall Street Journal reported in November 2022 that the Tesla co-founder’s tunneling endeavor had “ghosted” cities across the US, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Ontario, California. And on May 1, the San Antonio, Texas, Current reported that while Boring—which is based in the Austin area—struck a deal with the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority to dig a hyperloop, it hasn’t communicated with the RMA for five months.

There’s a Fresh Geyser Mystery in Yellowstone
Meta / Facebook Unloads Giphy, Is Out Hundreds of Millions
It’s unclear why the Steamboat Geyser had a record year
In 2020, Meta scooped up Giphy, a GIF search engine used by Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms, for $400 million. On Tuesday, Facebook’s parent company announced it had sold the product to stock image service Shutterstock for a mere $53 million—effectively taking a nearly $350 million loss. The AP reports that Shutterstock is paying cash in the deal, and Meta will still be able to access Giphy content across all its platforms. While Shutterstock CEO Paul Hennessy praises the new deal as “an exciting next step in Shutterstock’s journey as an end-to-end creative platform,” it’s been a more disappointing ride for Meta, whose high hopes for Giphy were dashed by British regulators, per the Guardian.
It’s the tallest active geyser on the planet— with an emphasis on “active.” From 2015 to 2017, it didn’t erupt at all. There was another largely quiet period from 1911 to 1961, but in 2018 it logged a record-setting 32 eruptions, a feat it has crushed this year with 47 eruptions, per the US Geological Survey. Why? Good question, and one that hasn’t been answered. It’s one on a long list of geyser mysteries, in fact. The gey ser-research field is a thin one, and as Yel lowstone National Park’s hydrologist explained the area beneath Steamboat hasn’t been mapped. However, seismic sensors there have revealed that the geyser’s water source may sit as deep as 130 feet.

After Meta announced it was buying Giphy three years ago, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority watchdog became concerned about antitrust issues and, in November 2021, the regulator ordered Meta to divest itself of its new purchase. Meta appealed that decision last year and fought the forced sale, arguing in its filing to the CMA that GIFs weren’t as trendy anymore, “with younger users in particular describing GIFs as ‘for boomers’ and ‘cringe.’ It added that Giphy wouldn’t make it on its own, and that only “weak or inappropriate” buyers would be interested in taking Giphy off of Meta’s hands. Meta lost its appeal, with the CMA noting that “the only way to avoid the significant impact the deal would have on competition” would be for Meta to sell Giphy, per the AP.
In addition to losing more than 85% of what it initially paid, Meta has also been hit with more than $70 million in fines from the CMA for going ahead with a merger without approval, reports Ars Technica. “It was Facebook’s decision to complete the merger before getting CMA clearance,” Tom Smith, an exCMA legal director, said.
Most other geysers seem to be fueled by shallower reserves; deeper equals warmer, so that could be a factor in Steamboat’s ability to propel water to heights of more than 300 feet. Michael Poland with the USGS earlier this year said it’s possible that increased snowfall in Yellowstone of late has led to more groundwater to fuel the geyser. What scientists are saying is that there’s no link between the increased activity and any potential looming eruption of Yellowstone’s supervolcano. “Yellowstone has an incredible geyser system that is unrelated to magmatic activity—other than the magmatic system basically providing heat,” tweeted one volcanologist. USA Today noted that the Waimangu Geyser in New Zealand has managed to shoot water taller than Steamboat has, but it’s been
NFL Approves Fair-Catch Twist to Kickoffs
The NFL on Tuesday announced its team owners approved a new kickoff rule in the name of player safety at the spring meeting. The rule will be in place for at least one year.
A receiving team that calls for a fair catch below the 25-yard line will get the ball at the 25 to start the drive. The rule goes like this:
After a fair catch is made, or is awarded as the result of fair-catch interference, the receiving team has the option of putting the ball in play by either a:
a). fair-catch kick (drop kick or placekick without a tee) from the spot of the catch (or the succeeding spot after enforcement of any applicable penalties or rule) (3-10 and 11-4-3), or (b). snap from the spot of the catch (or
the succeeding spot after enforcement of any applicable penalties), unless a player on the receiving team makes a fair catch of a free kick behind the receiving team’s 25-yard line, in which case the ball will be put in play at the receiving team’s 25-yard line.
”Note: A receiver may make or be awarded a fair catch in his end zone. If there is fair-catch interference or illegal contact with the receiver after he has made a fair catch.”
Not everyone in the NFL world was happy about the new rule. Former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee blasted the idea when it was initially floated Monday. He said on his program ”nobody really likes” the rule.
“It’s the most amateur, bush-leaguelooking bull crap I have seen in a long time when it comes to the NFL,” McAfee said.

Stranded for 5 Days, Woman Survives on Wine, Lollipops
“The only liquid Lillian, who doesn’t drink, had with her was a bottle of wine she had bought as a gift for her mother, so that got her through,” says Australia’s Wodonga Police Station Sgt. Martin Torpey. The tale of a 48-year-old who never drinks alcohol, Lillian Ip, found herself stuck in the Australian Outback after having taken a wrong turn and gotten bogged down in mud. What she had in the car were some lollipops and a bottle of wine—the latter meant as a gift for her mother—to sustain her during what turned out to be a five-day survival ordeal.

Egypt opened two of its oldest pyramids, located about 25 miles south of the capital Cairo, to visitors for the first time since 1965. Antiquities Minister Khaled el-Anany told reporters that tourists are now allowed to visit the Bent Pyramid and its satellite pyramid in the Dahshur royal necropolis, which is part of the Memphis Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bent Pyramid, which the AP reports was built during the Old Kingdom of the Pharaoh of Sneferu, in about 2600 BC, is unique in that it has two internal structures. El-Anany said the Bent Pyramid represents a transitional form of pyramid construction between the Djoser Step Pyramid (2667-2648 BC) and the Meidum Pyramid (also about 2600 BC). The Guardian notes its "unusual" shape: The first 160 feet rise at "a steep 54 degree angle, before tapering off towards the top."
It still haunts me.” The line from 28-year-old Thai resident Suwanne Maliwan to Reuters expresses a common sentiment Thursday, the 15th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed 230,000 lives. Maliwan, for instance, lost both her parents and five other relatives. ”Sometimes I dream that a wave is coming,” she says. Vigils and memorials across Asia were commemorating the staggering loss of life in what was one of the world’s deadliest natural disasters. A 9.1 magnitude earthquake off Sumatra island the morning after Christmas in 2004 triggered the tsunami and unleashed waves as high as 57 feet.
You may one day drive down roads charged with electricity that your vehicle automatically detects and sucks up through an automatic arm—if a Swedish project gains any headway. Called eRoadArlanda, it has turned 1.2 miles of road outside Stockholm into a kind of slot-car track where electric trucks insert movable arms into a rail to recharge the vehicle’s battery while driving. Designers say the technology is weather-proof and the arm will rise automatically when one car passes another, Sky News reports. The rails are also said to be safe to the touch.

Deep-sea researchers have completed the first full-size digital scan of the Titanic, showing the entire wreck in unprecedented detail and clarity, the companies behind a new documentary on the wreck said. The AP reports that using two remotely operated submersibles, a team of researchers spent six weeks last summer in the North Atlantic mapping the whole shipwreck and the surrounding 3-mile debris field, where personal belongings of the ocean liner’s passengers, such as shoes and watches, were scattered. Richard Parkinson, founder and chief executive of deep-sea exploration firm Magellan, estimated that the resulting data—including 715,000 images—is 10 times larger than any underwater 3D model ever attempted before.
“One of the most important issues of our time is the question of how to make fossil-free road transportation a reality,” says eRoadArlanda Chairman Hans Säll. “We now have a solution that will make this possible, which is amazing.” Among its pluses, Säll says the electric road lets vehicles have smaller batteries and therefore makes vehicles cheaper to produce. The $7.7 million project will be tested with a truck fleet for two years, and if the government approves, it could be implemented for $1.9 million per mile and include buses and cars. “Sweden is at the cutting edge of this technology, which we now hope to introduce in other areas of the country and the world,” Säll says.

Coastal areas of Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, and other countries were deluged. One of the first areas hit was Indonesia’s Aceh province, notes CBS News. In fact, most of those killed were in Indonesia alone, where 170,000 deaths were registered. ”No words can describe our feelings when we tearfully saw thousands of corpses lying on this ground 15 years ago,” said acting Aceh Gov. Nova Iriansyah at a ceremony in Sigli. ”And now, we can see how people in Aceh were able to overcome suffering and rise again, thanks to assistance from all Indonesians and from people all over the world.”
El-Anany also announced that Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered a collection of stone, clay, and wooden sarcophagi, some of them with mummies, in the area. He said archaeologists also found wooden funerary masks along with instruments used for cutting stones, dating to the Late Period (664332 BC). Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said they also uncovered large stone blocks along with limestone and granite fragments indicating the existence of ancient graves in the area. Egypt has been whipping up publicity for its new historical discoveries in the hopes of reviving a devastated tourism sector still recovering from the turmoil following a 2011 uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
For the first time in 200 years, the public is getting a look at two “extraordinary” portraits painted by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn. British auctioneer Henry Pettifer rediscovered the small 1635 portraits—depicting a wealthy couple from the artist’s hometown of Leiden, whose son had married one of Rembrandt’s cousins—in a private art collection during a routine valuation. “The pictures were completely absent from the Rembrandt literature in the 19th and 20th centuries, which was extraordinary,” Pettifer, a Christie’s expert in old masters, said. They were last seen in public in 1824, shortly before they were purchased by the ancestors of the current
France is trying to hang onto a medieval painting with a cra zy backstory. The nation has blocked the export of a small, 13th-century work by the Ita lian artist Cimabue, a painting that hung unnoticed for deca des above a hotplate in a Fren ch woman's kitchen. An auc tioneer spotted the painting as the elderly woman was preparing to sell her house, and Christ then sold for a staggering $26 million at auction earlier this year, the Guardian. The buyers are anonymous, but they're believed group of Chilean collectors based in the US. Now, however, it they won't be able to own the painting after all.
A 12-year-old Australian boy has pulled off a bold feat that drew international headlines: He stole his mom’s credit card and managed to fly to Bali, Indonesia, for a posh, four-day vacation before getting caught. As recounted in the Australian program A Current Affair, the boy did some research online and figured out he could fly alone without needing a letter from a parent on Jetstar Airways. He nabbed his mom’s credit card, tricked his grandmother into giving him his passport, took a train to the airport, and flew to Bali. “They just asked for my student ID and passport to prove that I’m over 12 and that I’m in secondary school,” says the boy, identified only as Drew. He then checked into a four-star hotel, having made reservations in advance, telling the clerk that his older sister would be joining him soon.
And there he stayed, having a fine time while his panicked mom reported him as missing back home. It wasn’t until the boy posted a video of himself in the hotel pool that his vacation finally came to an end. “I was shocked and disgusted, there’s no emotion to feel what we felt when we found out that he’d left overseas,” says mom, per news.com.au. One reason she’s ticked: Her son had actually tried this stunt twice before, only to be turned away at the airport by Qantas and Garuda Airlines. Mom says she was informed her son’s passport would be flagged by federal authorities as a result, but that apparently never happened. In the aftermath, Jetstar promises to tighten up its policies. “He just doesn’t like the word no and that’s what I got, a kid in Indonesia.”
seven months rendering the large amount of data they gathered, and a documentary on the project is expected to come out next year. But beyond that, Geffen says he hopes the new technology will help researchers work out details of how the Titanic met its fate and allow people to interact with history in a fresh way.
Ethiopia claims it has smashed a world record in the name of climate change— and the tree planting isn’t even done. More than 353 million tree seedlings were planted across the country in just 12 hours as part of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Green Legacy reforestation campaign. The campaign hopes to see 4 billion indigenous trees planted between May and October. Citizens had been encouraged to plant 200 million trees but Ahmed tweeted that 150 million had been planted after just six hours. At the end of 12 hours, the country’s minster for innovation and te chnology, Getahun Mekuria, announced 353,633,660 seedlings had gone into the ground—more than five times as many trees as were planted in India over 12 hours in 2017. Some schools and government offices closed to allow stu dents and civil servants to take part, which notes 2.6 billion trees have now been planted across Ethiopia. The Guardian reports each citizen is asked plant at least 40 seedlings. The goal is to transform Ethiopia’s landscape, which is seeing degradation, soil erosion, deforestation, and droughts and flooding tied to agriculture. About 80% of Ethiopia’s population relies on agriculture to make a living, with the result that just 4% of land is now forested, com pared to 30% at the end of the 19th century, according to Farm Africa. Per Al Jazeera, a recent study estimates that 1 trillion new trees could pull al most 750 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere—or about much as humans have released in the last 25 years—over several decades

A museum in southern France suffered a terrible blow when experts declared that over half its paintings are forgeries, The Terrus museum, dedicated to the work of painter Étienne Terrus, apparently knew nothing of the fakes until an art historian informed them. “It’s a catastrophe,” the mayor of Elne, where the museum resides, tells the Telegraph. “I put myself in the place of all the people who came to visit the museum, who saw fake works of art, who paid an entrance fee. It’s intolerable and I hope we find those responsible.” Police have taken the fakes and are trying to find those responsible.
“It’s an absolutely one-to-one digital copy, a ‘twin,’ of the Titanic in every detail,” said Anthony Geffen, head of documentary maker Atlantic Productions. Geffen says previous images of the Titanic were often limited by low light levels, and only allowed viewers to see one area of the wreck at a time. He said the new photorealistic 3D model captures both the bow and stern section, which had separated upon sinking, in clear detail—including the serial number on the propeller. Researchers spent

Multimillionaire Invites 10 People to Come Live in ’Paradise’
Looking to permanently while away your days overlooking the Tasman Sea and sipping on vino while watching "nice animals" with other "nice people"? Karl Reipen wants to hear from you. The Guardian reports the German multimillionaire has placed an ad seeking 10 people up to age 70 to come live in what he calls his "paradise," a 550-acre, $5.6 million estate in Awakino, on New Zealand's North Island. "If you are interested to live a life with a Group of Interesting people it can be a new life for you," reads the ad, which Stuff NZ reports was published twice in the New Zealand Herald. Reipen,
US Teen Wins $3M at Fortnite World Cup
Pennsylvania 16-year-old Kyle Giersdorf plays 8 to 10 hours of Fortnite a day, but his parents aren’t complaining: Giersdorf, better known as ”Bugha,” won a record-breaking $3 million at the inaugural Fortnite World Cup at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. The contest featured 100 participants out of around 40 million who entered the online competition. Giersdorf, who won the solo event in front of a packed stadium, says he plans to save the prize instead of going on a spending spree. ”All I want is a new desk and maybe a desk for my trophy. Apparently 82 of the museum’s 140 works are phony, spotted at times because they contained buildings constructed after Terrus died in 1922. Acclaimed for his landscapes of French Catalonia, Terrus was close with artists Aristide Maillol and Henri Matisse and lived mostly in Elne, a town on the Tech River that’s less than three miles from the Mediterranean coast of Languedoc-Roussillon. The museum spent over $190,000 acquiring paintings they thought were his. But the Terrus likely isn’t alone: Art experts say at least one in five paintings in the world’s top museums may well be fake.

who made his fortune in canned iced coffee, notes in the ad that the estate boasts a winery "for social meetings and dining," and that residents "can enjoy walking, fishing, shopping, kayaking, bird watching, swimming or looking at the nice animals."
“All our assumptions about how it sank, and a lot of the details of the Titanic, comes from speculation, because there is no model that you can reconstruct, or work exact distances,” Geffen says. “I’m excited because this quality of the scan will allow people in the future to walk through the Titanic themselves and see where the bridge was and everything else.” Parks Stephenson, a leading Titanic expert who was involved in the project, called the modeling a “gamechanger.” “I’m seeing details that none of us have ever seen before and this allows me to build upon everything that we have learned to date and see the wreck in a new light,” he says.
There are also stables and an indoor equestrian center on-site, and Reipen says, "If you would like to bring your own horse it is possible." Interested parties who prefer privacy will like that the property is an hour and a half from the nearest large town or city. The current government under Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern put in place a ban on foreigners owning homes in New Zealand, but Reipen scooped up
owners, who’ve now decided to put them up for sale. The owners were previously unaware that the paintings are “confirmed originals,” signed and dated by Rembrandt, per the Post. “The family liked the pictures but were never certain that they were by Rembrandt and never really looked into that,” says Pettifer. “They have been quietly sitting in this collection, effectively hidden away from any attention at all.” A photograph held in a Dutch library appears to be the only reference to the paintings within the last two centuries, and it had been
labeled “copy,” per the Post. Rembrandt experts at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum have since confirmed the portraits are the real deal. Together, they’re expected to fetch up to $10 million at a Christie’s auction in London on July 6, following showings in New York and Amsterdam.
With a total prize pool of $40 million provided by Epic Games, Fortnite’s pa rent company, the tournament broke an e-sports record, though that record is expe cted to be broken by an August event cal led “The International” Giersdorf, the first player in the North American East Region to qualify for the tournament, was domi nant in the six-game series, beating rivals including runner-up Harrison “Psalm” Chang, who took home $1.8 million. Giersdorf was hugged by his family after the win. “This is life-changing for him,” mother Darcy Giersdorf says. “He’s been playing video games since he was three, so this is his passion. He told us he could do this, he put his mind to it and he did it.”

Though they are some of the smallest of Rembrandt’s known portraits, they are “extraordinary ”much more spontaneous and intimate” than the artist’s larger, grander offerings, says Pettifer. “I think the reason for that is that the sitters were very closely connected to Rembrandt.”

We are talking cheese this month!
Owners Sasha Goldman & Chelsea Morrissey own a waterfront cheese & specialty food shop in Warren. They are 100% women owned and have just collaborated with Highlawn Farm to create their own delicious cheese called “Berkshire Rhode” and this cheese shop is a must-go-to favorite of mine to grab a charcuterie board or cup or even try their new “Boat Box” to take on the boat.
By L.A. Reilly
LA: How did the two of you come together to open a cheese shop?
SG: We met through our daughters and we had both moved here from Boston and started talking about how there wasn’t a great place to shop to bring home snacks for entertaining. There are a lot of good restaurants in the East Bay but not specialty food shops. We talked about it casually and I was really into making cheese boards at home during the pandemic. We saw that there was a building on Water St. for rent and thought that it would be perfect. We jumped in! it was something we love to do at home and thought it was weird that there wasn’t anywhere we could buy all the things we wanted. If we felt that way other people probably felt that way too.

Big Bites American Diner
Opens in North Providence
By Julia Romano
Big Bites American Diner, located in the plaza at 1818 Mineral Spring Avenue, is one of Rhode Island’s newest family eateries serving homemade, delicious food to residents from near and far. With a grand opening on March 6, 2023, Big Bites is already making its mark as a true American Diner.
For those who love a full plate of hot, enticing fare, the owners of Big Bites, Mario Azrak and Georges Makhlouf, are eager to make sure that’s what you get. With a menu that is complete with breakfast and lunch options, there is something to satisfy every palate.
There is no lack of food industry experience with Azrak and Maklouf, the main chef at Big Bites. Maklouf attended culinary school in both Greece and Lebanon, and has been partnered with Azrak for almost two decades. In addition, Azrak has worked as an executive chef for 25 years in Lebanon, Greece, and the United States, and has had more unique experiences in the restaurant business than most. This amount of knowledge and expertise gives him a leg up on knowing what works.
Azrak also owns and operates Food Beat, with four more locations in Franklin and Worcester, MA, on Providence’s East Side, and the fourth which is currently being relocated. He also runs Spoodles
Deli in Worcester, and provides 15 soup options per day, deli sandwiches, and breakfast dishes. With Big Bites, Azrak is working towards specializing more in the breakfast concept, which he said he and the patrons are seemingly enjoying.
As such, the diner’s menu includes a variety of breakfast foods including huge pancakes that could not be more satisfying for the customers, as well as delicious omelets, made with fluffy eggs and filled with whatever the customer prefers. One of the many special dishes that has become popular with the patrons is called “the Big Bites Melt,” which consists of two poached eggs, bacon or sausage, melted cheese on an English muffin, and a side of crispy home fries.
Lunch items are nothing less than hearty and include crispy fish and chips on Fridays, juicy burgers, Italian dishes, such as chicken parmesan, and many more.
Perhaps, the most renowned menu item, and the one that is a true throwback to the 1950s through the 1980s, is the Magic Chef steak sandwich. Azrak describes this as a “Delmonico steak sandwich with thinly sliced ribeye, mushrooms, onions, mayo, and cheese, on an Italian soft roll.”
If you think you’ve heard of the Magic Chef steak sandwich before, you would not be off base. This popular menu item was originally created at one of North Providence’s most popular former restaurants, The Magic Chef, by the Manzo Family, who owned and operated this well known establishment for more than 30 years. Patrons came from all over to

indulge and savor. The Manzo family is proud that the popularity of the Magic Steak Sandwich has resumed and will continue on, along with the restaurant’s success.
The restaurant’s retro decor is what you would expect in an American diner, with different seating options such as table seating or the typical diner bar seats. Open, yet cozy, you will definitely feel the diner vibe that they are projecting.
So, if you want to do your part in supporting local businesses, stop in to Big Bites American Diner and allow them an opportunity to impress you with a delicious meal made with love and fresh ingredients, as well as amazingly satisfying portions. Your experience will leave you wanting to make this one of your favorite casual eateries that you will want to return to again and again.

Industrious Operators Move Beyond the Status Quo
Dale J. Venturini
By Dale J. Venturini, President/CEO, RI Hospitality Association (RIHA)
The COVID-19 pandemic is mostly behind us, but supply chain issues, workforce woes and faltering consumer confidence levels continue to limit our businesses’ ability to operate as they normally would. These problems are farreaching and affect every industry, but they have had incredible consequences for the hospitality industry, specifically.
While over the course of the last three-plus years many longstanding businesses have shut down and others have come and gone, there have been many success stories documenting transformation within the industry and the development of exciting new concepts, ideas, and business models.
We are not going back to 2019; the “status quo” now is not what it was then.
Restaurants, hotels, and other industry-based businesses that survived (and even thrived) these past few years have adapted to changing consumer demand, and developed their identity, business model, and brand reputation.
For restaurants, paring down menus to focus on crowd-pleasers and signature items, prioritizing the takeout experience and shifting towards a more sustainable business model are recurring
I encourage any industry operators and managers reading this column to ask yourself, “what makes my business unique? What do we want our customers to remember us for?”
The answers to those two questions should be the foundation of your business model.
The market is oversaturated with copycat concepts, and in order to stand out from the crowd, your business should be providing exceptional value, an extraordinary product, and/or unrivaled convenience. Gone are the days of sacrificing quality for convenience; most consumers, especially those on the younger side, expect to “get what they pay for” when choosing where to dine or stay overnight.
Our industry should not fear change, but instead embrace it. Consumer trends indicate what works and what does not, and to ignore that data is to remain stuck in the past. The current cutthroat economy can be likened to a “survival of the fittest” scenario. In the case of the hospitality industry, those who refuse to evolve will make room for those who are less stubborn.
On which side of history do you want your business?

Fitness Tips:
By Stacie Venagro
2017 World Miss Fitness America Pro
There’s no doubt that exercise is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your mind and body. There are so many different ways to get physical activity in and I encourage you to try it all! You never know you might fall in love with something you’d never have imagined. Stepping outside of your comfort zone is something we should all do from time to time. Whether you’ve been exercising consistently, you’re a beginner who’s just getting started, or maybe you’re getting back on track from some time off the quality of exercise is more important than the quantity. We hear phrases like “go hard or go home” and while yes you should give your workouts one hundred percent, you should never sacrifice form and risk injury. As a personal trainer I have seen so many people sustain injuries from pushing themselves too hard while working out. I especially see this happening in group settings. Don’t worry about keeping up with the class. Work at your own pace and do what feels right for your body. Proper form not only prevents injuries but it maximizes your results. I’m going to tell you how to avoid this and get the most out of your workouts.
Dynamic Thoughts

Summer is here, and we can again enjoy the sports that we love so much during their peak season. We can also
now, again, benefit from some quick tips for rotational athletes, whether it be golf, baseball/softball, volleyball, or tennis.
Welcome fall! I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to cooler weather, sweaters, apple picking, and pumpkin everything! It’s also the best time to savor the time spent outdoors before colder weather comes. If you haven’t already it’s a great time to focus your fitness routine a couple of times a week getting out of the house. England is well known for beautiful fall scenery, so why not get out and discover something new.
Many of these sports involve a bias to one side (righty vs. lefty). This leaves you repetitively moving one way far more times than the opposite. We can become conditioned to moving in one direction, creating movement habits and behaviors that continually push us this way, even when we are not engaging in the activities we love, leading to imbalance and compensations.
Exercise doesn’t have to monotonous, there are plenty of great places to hike locally. There’s a book called Weekend Hikes in Rhode Island by Ken Weber that I was introduced to awhile back. an excellent job of breaking down each destination with detailed directions, approximate walking the distance. A couple that are great for fall are Napatree Point and Browning Mill Pond- Roaring These are just a couple of the many that are close by. Always be safe when hiking new areas and research prior to heading out. As always never hike close to dark. If hiking new areas isn’t your a walk or run in your neighborhood or local park.
At first thought, you may say, “I’ll just keep stretching out more to loosen the muscles.” But, let’s be honest, when does anyone stretch longer after their activities? If you’re like me, you want to get out of there, shower, and eat. So, what’s a more practical solution to reduce potential compensations and repeat injuries?
Get your family involved in fitness! If you don’t have children take the dogs along with you. Children to get outside and explore nature. There’s plenty to explore to stimulate the mind and get some activity in. When you’re having fun exercise doesn’t feel like a task. Most dogs are always up for you can train them to run while you’re training g yourself. Alternate between jogging and walking second intervals to start off and work your way up from there. Bring water for you and your pet everyone hydrated.
Working with a personal trainer is supposed to ensure that you are not only getting a great workout but they’re also teaching you the proper way to preform each exercise. Not everyone works with a trainer, many of us attend group classes or workout on our own. In a group setting you have access to an instructor, unfortunately teaching so many people at once the person leading the class can’t always watch and correct every single person. If you are unsure, maybe you feel a sharp pain while your working out or something just doesn’t feel right, stop and ask the instructor for help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, if you’re not sure about something someone else is probably feeling the same way. In a situation where you are working out on your own you can always google the right way to do each of your exercises and workout in front of a mirror. Trust me, most people can’t tell when they’re form is off unless they can see it themselves. When you are using weights they should be heavy enough to challenge you, and you should be able to complete all reps with good form. Let’s take shoulder presses as an example. To start your elbows should be in line with your shoulders, wrist in line with the elbow, palms facing forward, tummy tucked tight, and back nice and straight. Oftentimes when people start to get tired they’re back starts arching, this is dangerous and could cause potential back or shoulder injuries. If you’re doing a squat and your knees are coming over your toes not only are you setting yourself up for injury but you’re not really working the glutes and the quads as best as you could, thus minimizing the effects. Sometimes we just can’t do certain exercises and that’s ok! Modifications are just as good and eventually you’ll get there I promise. Again quality over quantity, keep this in mind and you’ll be on the road to success for whatever your goals are. Keep moving and stay motivated.
Enjoy the beginning of this beautiful season and stay motivated. Just because it’s getting cooler out mean that it’s not a good time to start working out. Anytime is a great time to start!
Stacie Venagro Fitness is located at 161 Macklin Street in Cranston.
If you move in one direction more than another, take a few moments to reverse it in the other direction. Using a right-handed golfer, as an example; they swing the club to the right on a backswing and follow through to a left-sided turn. It sounds like they go equally in different directions, but the way they turn to the right is not the same as how they turn to the left. Different muscles and motor patterns are needed to move into the right in this case, meaning the left side is doing something different than the right side. To offset this, taking swings as a lefty (even if they are not great) can be a viable strategy to offset the bias. Please note that these should be gentle, easy swings to get a feel for how to move in this position. Don’t actually play lefthanded.
The balancing out of moves can be a 5:1 ratio. So, for every five swings the golfer makes, they can take a slow, easy one in the opposite direction. These tips can apply to any athlete and will reduce a one-sided movement bias with daily activity and impede potential compensations.

How Much Exercise Do We Really Need Each Week?
By: Susan Gazerro
For many, exercise might not be on top of your to-do list, but the World Health Organization (WHO), says it should be. According to the WHO, 1 in 4 adults and 4 out of 5 adolescents don’t get enough cardio exercise. To many, exercise is just not a priority, but a lack of physical activity can increase the odds of an early death by 20 to 30%. Research has proven, exercise can be a powerful tool for prevention, proven to help protect against cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, and anxiety. Plus it can improve thinking, learning, and judgment, and can even help you get a better night’s sleep. Add to all these benefits, you just feel better when you exercise.
I have mentioned, in many articles, that chemicals are released from your brain when your body is in exercise mode. Those chemicals change and improve your mood. I also always say that when you feel good physically, you feel great mentally. When you feel good, everything in life is so much easier to deal with, and your stress level decreases. I repeat, exercise is a powerful tool for you, both physically and mentally.
If you have not exercised in some time, speak to your doctor if you have medical conditions or concerns. Make sure your activity and its intensity are appropriate for your age and fitness level.
Exercise should consist of both some type of cardio and some type of strength training. On average, and this varies depending on age, height, and weight, each week, adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of muscle strengthening activity. You may think that 150 minutes sounds like a lot, but it’s not. It’s only two and half hours, and if you divide that by seven days, it’s not very much at all. This is the basic guideline for adults, but again, it varies per person.
Some examples of moderate-intensity activity are walking, jogging, running, swimming, riding a bike, pushing a lawn mower, hiking, etc. Moderate or low exercise would be walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Vigorous activity would be a mix of jogging and running for an hour and 15 minutes a day, five days a week. Engaging in martial arts, walking, or running the stairs, can
30 Shop In RI
provide vigorous activity, basically, anything that requires intense effort. You can also do these in short bursts, as long as you are putting forth 100% effort. Make it intense and take short breaks. If you “Google” HIIT workouts, you can get some good ideas for a vigorous workout. You can also do a mix of moderate and vigorous, two out of the five days.
Muscle strengthening exercises or activities can be done by using light weights, resistance bands, medicine balls, or your own body weight. You should be working arms, back, shoulders, chest, and legs. You should be doing these types of strengthening exercises, two days a week. When someone new takes my class and asks me to train them, I explain the difference between a cardio workout and a muscle strengthening workout.
Cardio burns fat for the period you are doing the activity. Whether you are walking, running, swimming, taking a fitness class etc., you are burning fat for the amount of time you are doing the activity. This is great because cardio is the only way to work the heart muscle. Muscle strengthening activities continue to burn fat for an average of up to two days after you’ve completed the workout. This is because you are activating the muscles and they continue to burn the fat. This, again, depends on age, height, and weight.
You can also do a low impact workout doing core exercises. Having a strong core has so many benefits. Again, when someone new takes my class or asks me to train them, I ask them what body part they are looking to make the strongest. I get everything from biceps to quads, hamstrings, etc. My response is, it should be “your mind.” When you have a strong mind, you are more apt to stay focused and dedicated. The second body part is the core. When you have a strong core, all other muscle groups are easier to work on. Start with basic sit ups. Add a weight. Start with weight at your chest, as you do a full sit up, lift the weight to the ceiling. Bring it back to the chest and lie back down. Put hands flat on the side of your body or lean back on forearms, alternate kicks in the air, then bring both legs up together. All of these should be done at least 15x, for two sets.

HOW TO USE THE TRICKS FROM FUNCTIONAL TRAINING TO IMPROVE YOUR GAME IN THE CAGE
By Kevin Kearns | Burn With Kearns
How to Use the Tricks From Functional Training to Improve Your Game in the Cage
For as long as I can remember, I constantly and forever heard that if you want to become stronger, you must move heavy weights. The definition of functional strength training is strength that you can use. That form has to fit the function. This does not mean you have to throw out all those “high school” and “beach muscle” moves you love. What it means is thinking outside the box a little bit. It means being a little crazy and not giving a crap what people might be saying about you at the gym. Especially, if you are in the cage. You need an edge.
Here are some key concepts to remember about functional strength training that will enhance your game. Why and how do I know? These are the same concepts I, personally, used with 15 UFC fighters.
Do not sacrifice weight for form.
Multi-Planar motions are more like MMA and can be MMA specific.
Challenge the CNS (central nervous system).
Think outside the box.
Three rules: be effective, efficient, and safe. The last one is really important. It has to be somewhat safe for what you are doing.
Form fits the function.
So let’s look at challenging the central nervous system (CNS). What is the CNS?
The CNS is made up of the brain, the spinal cord, and the optic nerves. The CNS controls thought processes, guides movement, and registers sensations throughout the body.

6. Balance or instability
The other benefits of incorporating this type training into your regular training are the following
Increase use of stabilizers and neutralizers (these help with wasted motion and balance).
Increase muscle mass usage.

You have heard the term, “I used muscles I didn’t know I had.”
Helps break through plateaus when training. It’s similar to not bench pressing for a while and using a different exercise that involves the chest. Then, after a few weeks, you go back to bench pressing and break through that new bench press best!
The last and final benefit is helping rehab injuries that you may have, without laying off training. This is of primary importance when getting ready for the cage. No game, no pay!
The way that this is different from specific balance training is that you are able to integrate this into your everyday routine. You don’t have to do a separate portion of balance training. You add a little “ salsa” to your normal training to spice things up. Here are some other examples. Drills for MMA specific and enhance balanced
Push Ups - try rotational push ups , push ups on a stability ball , lateral push ups, rotational push ups with dumbbells in each hand, push ups with hand on a stability ball, handstand pushups, push ups with one hand on a med ball, push ups with both hands on a med ball, push ups crossing over a med ball, and alike. The combos can be endless and reap awesome rewards.
Pull ups - side to side pull ups, towel pull ups, jump squat to pull ups, BJJ gi top pull ups, explosive pulls, inverted rows, and alike.
Curls - standing on one leg, bicep curl to shoulder press, upper cuts, squat curl and press, squat curl, press and rotate, squat curl and press and burpee.
The point is that with a little imagination, your training will be enhanced, as well as your physique, in many ways. The young guys will also be impressed and fall on their faces the first time they try push ups off a stability ball. That’s an added, yet very rewarding bonus.

Take a Fresh Look at Your Finances
By: Carrie McPherson
Remember those financial resolutions you committed to at the beginning of the year? If they seem like a distant memory, the start of summer is an excellent time to reset and take stock of your progress. Follow the tips below to recommit yourself to your financial goals.
1. Start with a clean slate.
Review your financial situation and recent spending patterns. Is your spending aligned with your financial goals? Re-evaluate any bad money habits that may be holding you back from making better financial decisions. Remind yourself that healthy financial behaviors can become part of your daily routine.
2. Commit to financial stability.
It’s easier to do something when you are intentional. Just like you set aside an afternoon to clean out the garage, set aside a few hours to clean up your finances. During this time, reflect, organize and make a conscious commitment to take responsibility for your financial future.
3. Create, update or review your plan of action.
A financial plan provides a roadmap for spending and saving, and encourages you to allocate your money toward the items or experiences that matter most to you. Your plan should articulate how you intend to handle your day-to-day finances, while working to achieve your long-term goals such as paying off your home mortgage and confidently retiring on your terms. If a large expense comes along, you may need to re-evaluate your financial priorities. Adjust as necessary and then get back on track as soon as possible. Likewise, if you receive a raise or windfall, consider how the additional funds can be applied to your financial plan.
4. Spend within reason.
Your plan can provide you with guardrails to keep long-term goals in sight as you satisfy near-term wants and needs. When you know your emergency fund, retirement and other goals are on track, you can purchase tickets to the big game or plan a family trip without feeling guilty or worried that the costs will prevent you from achieving your larger financial goals.
5.
Life can throw challenging curveballs. Unexpected events such as unplanned medical bills or losing your job can greatly impact your bottom line. The only certainty is uncertainty, and that’s why it’s critical to assess your insurance policies to ensure you’re fully covered, and establish an “emergency fund” to cover surprise expenses. Consider reviewing your life, disability health, home and auto insurance policies with a financial professional who can help you identify and close any gaps in coverage. If you’ve acquired artwork, collectibles, technology or other valuables, make sure they are covered under your current home insurance plan. Also, use this as a time to update beneficiaries on your policies if needed.
6.
The desire to keep your finances in good order is an admirable aspiration, and it has lasting impacts. Focusing on your finances today may help you to achieve a more comfortable financial future for you and your family tomorrow. Consider working with a financial professional to help create a plan to reach your goals. With renewed energy and a well-defined plan, you can feel good about your financial choices.

Attorney Robert V. Russo
SETS THE BAR HIGH WHEN SERVING HIS CLIENTS
by Paul Lonardo
When it comes to personal injury attorneys, most people might believe that they are all the same. While they may all do the same type of work regarding the representation of the clients they serve, each law firm comes with their own unique experiences and philosophies.
Attorney Russo V. Russo’s practice focuses on personal injury, something he has been doing for over thirty years now.
Robert V. Russo Law Offices, in Providence, is a practice that focuses on representing anyone who has experienced personal injury. Russo believes that what sets him apart from other personal injury attorneys is that he is involved in every case his firm represents. His staff may
think he’s crazy, but he handles all aspects of his cases himself, including his own arbitrations, his own statements, and even if he is away from the office, no matter where he is, he sees every intake. It’s a professional commitment he has for the work that he does, and it shows how fully invested he is, personally, in every case.
When you hear his office promote ‘personal service for personal injuries,’ they mean just that. The size of the firm is big enough to handle any case, but not too big, so his clients still get that intimate office feel, along with individual attention.
Russo graduated from Bryant University and
44 Shop In RI
obtained his Juris Doctorate degree in Maryland, at the University of Baltimore. He was originally employed at Coia & Lepore, Ltd. in Providence, where he handled many personal injury cases. In 1997, after seven years at that firm, he went off on his own and established Robert V. Russo Law Offices, where he continues his practice with a primary focus on personal injury, motor vehicle accidents, medical malpractice, slip and falls, and work-related injuries.
Because of his many years of service in and around the greater Providence area, Russo’s ties to the community run deep. He has been a member of the Johnston Town Council since 1995, serving as president of the town council for the past 17 years. His political activities have provided him opportunities to help the town come to agreement on issues ranging from zoning matters to school concerns and tax treaties. His experience being a part of local government is something he sees as being helpful and useful in his work as an attorney, where resolving conflicts between two parties who perceive the same situation in completely different ways is always part and parcel of what he does on a day-to-day basis.
Attorney Russo is not afraid of challenge, which should be an essential quality in any attorney. You might think that a lawyer who handles primarily personal injury cases wouldn’t participate in potentially risky sports and recreational activities, like snowmobiling and jet skiing, but you would be wrong. Russo believes that you need to be mentally, physically, and emotionally tough to be successful, which is why he stays active and fit, challenging himself by participating in physical endurance events such as triathlons and road races, whenever he can. There’s a tenacity there that translates to client confidence because they know Russo will fight for them.
Robert V. Russo Law Offices employs an associate attorney and a large office staff of ten, who Russo gives a lot of credit to for its overall success, not just for the practice, but for the clients they regularly serve.
“My core staff has been with me since the beginning,” Russo said, adding, “ I’ve been so fortunate to have them. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.”
Russo is happy and satisfied with the way things are going and how he is able to continue to serve the public after so many years.
“I’m here for the duration,” he said. “I love it. If the day ever comes that I don’t feel the same way helping people in the capacity I do, we’ll go from there.”
While he has no current plans for expansion or growth, there is always a possibility that the firm could become a family business sometime down the road.
Russo is a member of the Rhode Island Association of Justice, Justinian Law Society, Rhode Island Bar Association, and has been admitted to the Federal District Court for the District of Rhode Island and the United States Supreme Court.
Please visit the law office website at www.robertrussolawoffice.com or contact Robert Russo by phone at 401-777-0000, to discuss any issues or questions you have. Russo’s staff is always available, and Spanish is spoken. The law office is located at 1011 Smith Street in Providence.

5 Financial Considerations When Moving to a New State
By: Edward Pontarelli Jr.
Deciding whether to move to a different state comes with many considerations. Top of mind might be factors like the weather, job market conditions, and education systems. Finances likely come into play, as well. Here are five key considerations to take into account as you evaluate your options:
1. Recognize cost-of-living factors
Living expenses vary from one place to the next. Moving across state lines means your housing costs are likely to change. Commuting expenses are another consideration, as well as expected monthly payments for services like utilities and internet connections. Health insurance costs may also differ depending on where you live. Make sure you are prepared for your new financial realities – whether they’ll ultimately help or hurt your bottom line.
2. Understand your moving expenses
If you’re moving for a new job, some employers will cover moving costs, but if that isn’t the case, it’s important to estimate what your out-of-pocket expenses will be. If you have few personal belongings, costs can be minimal. But, if you are moving a whole household, you’ll need to rent a moving van or hire a professional service. Moving costs can add up quickly, so make sure you include them as you build out your budget.
3. Become familiar with tax laws in your new state State income tax rates vary dramatically across the U.S.. Some states have higher sales taxes, while others offer sales tax exemptions on items like food and clothing. This is another “living cost” consideration as you assess how your bottom line may be affected by a move out of state.
4. Consider the impact on your investments
Investment income such as dividends or capital gains may be taxed differently in your new home state versus the state from where you are moving from. Make sure you are aware of the potential impact and determine if it might be beneficial to make changes to your portfolio. In addition, if tax-exempt municipal bonds from your current home state are part of your portfolio, be aware that you will lose the state tax exemption benefit if you change your state of residency.
5. Review your estate plan
Laws affecting estate plans vary by state. You’ll likely need to update your wills, trusts, and any other key estate-related documents such as health care and financial power-of-attorney documents. Consider your decision to move across state boundaries a perfect opportunity to conduct a thorough review of your estate plan.
Work with a professional
If you have a relationship with a financial advisor, it makes sense to discuss the financial ramifications of your move with him or her. Keep in mind that they will need to be licensed in the state where you intend to move if you plan to keep working together. If that’s not feasible, you may need to seek advice from an advisor with the right credentials to serve your needs. Start the process as soon as you can to ensure a smooth transition of your finances as you settle into your new living situation.

What is an Independent Adjuster?
One of the more frustrating experiences that one can work through is that of dealing with a homeowners insurance claim. The ironic part about this, of course, is the endless array of commercials that one sees from the various insurance companies touting their wares through creative marketing, celebrity appearances, and a whole lotta superfluous exaggeration, as to how well taken care of their clients are.
What I can only assume is that the marketing departments of these said companies are unintentionally promoting product benefits that, other than offering a cost savings, which may be realized in choosing one company over another, simply do not exist.
This plays itself out in real world scenarios on a daily basis, particularly in the home improvement industry.
When someone experiences a loss that is covered by their homeowners insurance policy, whether it be due to a broken pipe, a tree falling on the house, etc., many times it is assumed that their insurance company will simply “take care of them.”
Even for those folks who realize there may be some initial ‘hoop jumping’ when filing a claim, there is still often the assumptive approach that the insured has nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, this utopian mindset seldom truly plays itself out in reality.
The majority of homeowners really do not have experience filing a homeowners insurance claim. For many, taking the insurance company’s word and following its verbatim guidance could very well leave the insured in a quite compromised position. In fact, in almost 30 years of working directly with insurance companies, I can say with absolute certainty that the truth of these types of situations is that as the adjuster assigned by the insurance company works through the claim, 50% of the time, they are reasonable to deal and work with.
The other 50% of the time, the adjuster is out of their mind (please excuse the crass descriptor). Literally, it is black & white. 50% of the time, a reasonable situation (all things considered) & 50% of the time, a situation in which the homeowner could really get raked over the coals for the simple reason of just not knowing any better.
Enter the Independent Adjuster (the ‘IA’).
An Independent Adjuster is an Adjuster that does not work for an individual insurance company, but who works entirely on their own. While they may, at times, be hired by the insurance companies themselves to adjust claims, many IAs work strictly with insureds as an advocate for them to make sure that anything the insured is entitled to under their homeowners policy, is properly compensated for by their homeowners insurance company.
Many IAs are former adjusters that have been employed in the past by an insurance company, hence, the reason why they are often so much better at what they do than the potentially junior adjuster, which the insurance company happens to assign to any given case.
It is important that the IA has a copy of your policy (it is wise to keep a physical copy of it in a safe place, as well as an electronic version), as they will use the policy to aid in making a case for the amount the insurance company should ultimately be paying out on the claim.
IAs usually get paid 10% of whatever the total value of the claim is. Considering how far off insurance companies’ initial analyses can often be this is very much worth it.
If you are in a pinch and are able to connect with a really good IA after reviewing your particular case, they will be honest with you and let you know whether they will be able to help you out or not. Although involving an IA can potentially drag a case out much longer than if the insurance company properly ponied up the money related to the claim right from the very beginning, in those instances, where I evaluate a situation and recommend an IA become involved, I believe that the wait will be well worth it.
Having to deal with some type of insurance loss at your home can be painful enough, or having to deal with an insurance company that is intentionally or unintentionally not working in the best interest of their insureds, is additional excruciation that no homeowner should have to experience.
Fortunately, aligning yourself with a professionally competent IA can be as relieving as having Batman arrive on scene when any downtrodden damsel finds themself in distress.

FINAL CUT Landcapes, Hardscapes, Site Work
By Susan Gazerro
Final Cut does it all, and they do it as if they are designing and creating their own yard. The owner realizes that people are spending more time at home, and it’s important to love where you live. Final Cut’s goal is to imaginatively create an outdoor environment to complement your needs and lifestyle. Homeowners usually concentrate on the interior of their home, more so than the exterior, but that’s where Final Cut comes in.
Before I list all of the services Final Cut offers, I thought it was important to learn a little bit about the owner, Matt. I felt this was important to include because when you hear Matt speak about his business, you instantly know that this is not just a job. Matt’s passion and pride come through immediately. Matt told me that while other kids were at the baseball field or at the beach, from the age of 14, he was working for his cousin’s landscape business. Matt said that he would be so excited to put the uniform on and get to work with the older guys. He admired them, early on, and was eager to learn everything they knew. He was in awe with the extent of their knowledge in both Landscape and Hardscape.
When Matt was old enough to go out on his own, he started Final Cut. Final Cut grew because of Matt’s experience, knowledge, passion, and competitive pricing. As Matt grew the business, he also added Site Work. Below is a detailed list of what Final Cut offers.
Hardscapes: Design and installation of Patios, Fire Pits, Fireplaces, Outdoor Kitchen and Bars, Steps, Driveways, Pool Aprons, Retaining Walls, and Walkways
Landscape Design: The exterior of your home tells a story of who you are. Final Cut will help you design the landscape which tells that story. A story you will love coming home to everyday.
Landscape Services: Lawn Installations, Hydro-Seeding, Sod Installation, Shrub and Tree Plantings, and Drainage Correction
Site Work: Foundation Excavation, Backfill and Compaction, Swimming Pool Excavation, Drainage systems, Lot Grading, Underground Utilities, Concrete Driveway & Sidewalk Removal, Concrete Preparation, & Material Hauling

Biomes Brings Out the Kid in Everyone
by Mark Berger
Since Mark Hall was a teenager, he had an affinity for marine life. He would go to the shores of New England to search, locate, and study such wildlife. It would become his life’s work in learning all there is to know about the area’s inhabitants of the land and sea.
By collecting all forms of animals, Hall envisioned a way of educating others, both young and young-at-heart, about the creatures small and large and what they can teach us.
That dream became a reality after he opened up Biomes on Post Road (Rte. 1) in North Kingstown, as a way to show people other life forms and their purpose in life. His six-member staff (including Hall) spend their days looking after hundreds of species, from lizards and fish to a tortoise named “Darwin,” who is one of the facility’s most popular attractions.
When families, groups, or field trips arrive, Hall ensures they are treated to one interesting experience.
“We hold private group functions during the morning for birthday parties, scouting excursions, and school field trips. Many people like touching Darwin, the horseshoe crabs, and seeing all of the different animals we have here. They also have the chance to see unusual animals that migrated here from either the Caribbean or Florida. There is plenty to see and do here,” he said.
That’s because Biomes possesses a 12,000 sq.ft. building to house all of the new and unique characters. Those who enter can marvel at the large aquarium tank filled with three different sharks and stingrays. They also have rescued and local marine life on display. Hall estimates that roughly “95 percent” of its collection comes from local waters. He added that they have the largest New England collection of animals in the world. Should some of their guests get too large for their care, their partnership with the New England Aquarium in Boston enables them to pass them on for continued care.
68 Shop In RI 68 Shop In RI
Learning about animal life is something Hall deeply believes in. He began as a 14 year old catching marine life in the area. He would later start supplying specimens to local colleges and schools. That transformed into becoming a traveling Biomes teacher, traveling throughout New England to show students near and far his assortment of animals. Hall would get requests from teachers who wanted to have him come display his work to their classes. He said that the business simply snowballed from there.
In 1991, Hall decided to not only bring his collections to the people, he would also have a place where people can come to him. That became the beginning of Biomes.
These days, Biomes find themselves in their peak time of the year. Hall said that they are busy from April vacation to the end of August. Rainy days, weekends, and other occasions make for a prime destination for families and groups.
The fall will be when Hall, his staff, and several volunteers will comb the local waters in search of discovering new aquatic life. Sometimes, they can make a contribution in ways they never envisioned.
One time, they found a southern sand tilefish that strayed up this way. By its name, one can surmise that particular creature is not from around here. They found it on an enclosed beach. If someone else finds this species somewhere outside its range, then The Smithsonian will document it and change the range regarding where that animal is located. While the odds of that happening are almost zero, Hall said that it is pretty cool to be registered as having found this rare fish in this area.
Hall considers learning about these animals as a world in and of itself.
“Ghost crabs live in warmer climates and don’t live in water,” he said. “We are in the process of building an enclosed beach for them that mimics their normal habitat. It’s the opportunity to educate others about the other life forms around us.
“Some of our volunteers have been doing this with us for 25 years,” Hall continues. “This is their passion and they want to contribute this way.”
The Biomes Center is New England’s only private marine education facility and the most hands-on aquarium in the region. They’ve been providing interactive marine biology programs for schools and families since 1989.
They specialize in teaching children and adults about the marine animals of Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
Biomes is open daily from 12:00 noon until 5:00 PM. Reservations for groups must be made in advance by emailing Mark Hall at mark@biomescenter.com or calling 401-885-4690.
Further details about tours and upcoming events may be found by visiting their website at: biomescenter.com.

Toyota of Smithfield Welcomes New Service Manager Anthony Almedia
By Mark Berger
Having been in the automotive industry for many years, Anthony Almedia’s journey has landed him as Toyota of Smithfield’s new service manager.
He began the new position, recently, and expects the first few months of his tenure will be learning from the 30-employee staff, and exceeding the department’s goals for the upcoming year.
Almeida credits General Manager John Durrani for encouraging him to work for the dealership.
“John was the primary reason for me coming here,” said Almedia, who previously worked as service manager at Kia of Norwood, before taking over in April. “Working with John and the dealership’s location were some of the main reasons why I decided to work here.”
Almeida’s top priorities are building customer retention and building customer relationships in the service department. Customer care and relations require almost three times more attention in the service department, than in any other department in the automotive store.
“This is where Almeida’s experience and expertise will benefit Toyota of Smithfield—and more importantly—our customers,” Durrani said. “As I always say, ‘without our customers, we do not have a business.’ So, we added Tony strictly to improve our customers’ service experience. This is all about our customers and their well being.”
Another major goal is earning The President’s Award, again. Almedia said that the dealership missed out on 2022, after winning it in 2021. He said that winning it will be a tall task, but one he and other staff are ready to face.
Almedia comes to Toyota of Smithfield with 25 years of experience. He worked his way from starting off as a “lot kid,” parking vehicles before cleaning cars and entering into sales, before returning back to service.
The dealership will continue to hold its monthly private sale. This month’s event takes place on Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, by appointment only. Managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives.
The Dealership’s Peace of Mind Purchase Process means no hassles over pricing, trade-in values, cash back and rebate incentives offered up front, and the best available leasing and financing terms, up front. Durrani said that this is just part of the all-around, customer-driven experience he implemented to ensure the process does not get bogged down in miscommunication.

Cannot
Not Working? Try Networking!
By: Mark Berger
It’s been several years since the world was hit with a crippling pandemic that shut everything down. Much has been written and said since March 2020, regarding how business leaders and owners should proceed during that period. Zoom and Teams apps were created to keep businesses connected and moving forward. The need for such devices and technology then sought to maintain productivity and keep executives from imposing layoffs and closing their doors.
As the world continues healing itself from Covid-19, more people want to connect with other like-minded professionals, in person. Some people have returned to networking as a resource to expand their contacts. It’s a tried-and-true way of accomplishing this goal—going to events to meet new people and pitch who you are and what you do. More professionals are making the jump from video conferences to in-person networking. Because of this, the process of figuring out where to go and who to meet becomes very important.
While there are so many events happening statewide, nobody has the time to attend all of them. Even those so-called “serial networkers” have to eat and sleep some time. Here are some options to consider:
When should someone attend a networking event? This can only be answered by the individual, but with numerous events statewide at different places and times during the day. If you are a
morning person, then perhaps a “Morning Coffee” (often put on by various Chambers of Commerce) or a “Welcome Wednesday” (hosted by the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce) may be your choice. These events are open before the business day starts at 9:00 AM. They offer chances to meet other people from other industries, share stories, and exchange information. This can lead to face-to-face meetings and projects, as a result.
For any upcoming morning coffee events, please visit your local Chamber for more details. The “Welcome Wednesday” event usually meets monthly on the first Wednesday at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island on 188 Valley Street, Ste. 125, Providence. Registration is free but required through the Chamber’s website at www. nrichamber.com. Further details can be found either on the website or calling them at 401-3341000.
How about networking during lunch time? There are plenty of “Lunch and Learn” events happening throughout the region. One of the more popular ones is put on by the Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce. Their “Leads Luncheon” typically happens on the fourth Friday of the month at various locations within Central Rhode Island (often within Warwick and Cranston member establishments).
They offer several rounds of “speed networking,”

where attendees pitch themselves, pass out business cards and make connections. The event is fun and the business opportunities arise from those who attend.
Anyone interested in learning more may visit the Central Rhode Island Chamber website at www. centralrichamber.com. They can obtain details and register there. There is a charge for Chamber members, their guests and slightly more for nonChamber members.
Evening events often offers a way to unwind after a long day. There are many organizations that sponsor events ranging from painting and wine to bowling and fundraising events.
Speaking of fundraising, charity events are great opportunities to network and support various causes. People are already there to help others so it becomes the best of both worlds.
Because of the sheer number of charities doing yeoman’s work, take the time to research any of the hundreds of charities registered in Rhode Island, and throw your support to them. It can give people the chance to connect with a common bond.
One doesn’t need to stay in Rhode Island to network. One networking event that generates a buzz monthly is Momentum Networking. Formally known as 4th Monday Networking, they take over Towne Tavern and Tap in Attleboro and have food, conversation, and discuss upcoming events. Bob Salvas has been running this monthly event for well over a decade.
Networking can be numerous and intimidating if you aren’t sure where to go or what to do. This is where having an event guide helps to plan out the week. Several professionals send out weekly Networking newsletters that highlight all events in the region. These are free newsletters that come are emailed weekly.
To become a part of their respective list, please email them directly. They also accept submissions
for any event happening in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts at no charge.
Contact Bob Salvas at Bob@bobsalvas.com for the Momentum Networking Newsletter and to attend his monthly event.

Feel free to mention my name to them when you do.

Trust In Estate Planning Regardless Of The Size Of Your Estate
The Benefits of Utilizing A Living Trust In Estate Planning Regardless Of The Size Of Your Estate

A will is a legal document which indicates how a person’s estate is to be distributed after their death. The person executing the will (the “testator”) may provide for equal or unequal division of their proper-ty amongst their heirs or anyone else they choose. Without a properly drawn and executed will, the person’s estate would pass to their heirs. Most often this is not what a testator desires. All wills must be approved and allowed after the testator’s death by the Probate Court for the city or town where they resided.

A trust is a legal relationship in which one or more persons (the “grantor” or “settlor”) transfer assets to an individual or institution (the “trustee”) for the benefit of certain persons or institutions (the “beneficiaries”).

Rhode Island law permits the same person(s) to be the settlor(s), trustee(s) and beneficia-ry/beneficiaries at the same time. This allows a single person or couple to utilize a trust as the center of an estate plan while retaining complete control over their assets during the remainder of their lifetimes.

Trusts can reduce tax liability; provide flexibility to achieve non-tax objectives such as prudent management of estate property; expeditious and confidential transfer of assets upon death; and protection of your assets from the claims of creditors.

Unlike a will, a living trust does not have to be approved by a probate court. This practically eliminates the possibility your estate plan will be contested by an unhappy child or other heir. Avoidance of probate also results in a substantial savings in both time and money to your estate.

All expenses of probate are eliminated by the use of a living trust to control and direct the disposition of your assets after your death. The expenses include the probate inventory tax, probate court filing fees and advertising costs, and attorney’s fees. The cost to use a living trust as the center of your estate plan is less than the cost of probating a single will.

In addition, the delay involved in the probate of a will is also eliminated. A living trust continues uninterrupted after death. The appointment of a successor trustee is provided for in the living trust itself. Since the trust does not need to be approved by a probate court, the delay of at least nine (9) months experienced in probating a will, before assets can be distributed or used for the benefit of survivors, is avoided.

Everyone should consider an estate plan to properly manage assets during their lifetime and control their distribution after death. In many cases, such an estate plan should be centered around a living trust to avoid the expense and delay of probate. A trust can provide many benefits regardless of the size of your estate.
