Louis Pompeii has been involved with making people look good for more than two decades. His first store in Downtown Smithfield had customers constantly coming in for his colorful take on anything and everything. The clientele loved his old-style approach to cutting and styling hair. Life was good and Louie had plenty to be thankful for…

…until life threw him a curve ball and everything changed. He was forced to start over and reestablish himself to a new base of customers.

His new location at 146 Waterman Ave., in North Providence, opened a few weeks ago. He not only hopes his Smithfield-based customers return (Louis has been using word-of-mouth advertising to inform people of the move. Unfortunately, Pompeii said he didn’t get their contact information before the Smithfield store closed), but would also love to introduce himself to a new community.

“Along with my sister, Debbie Baldassarre, who does nails on the East Side (of Providence), we each have a license to practice Cosmetology,” Pompeii said. “It was something I knew early on I was good at doing, although I was nervous at first. Additionally, I like to make people looking and feeling good.”

Pompeii differs from other places in two respects. First, he allows walk-in appointments. The shop still maintains Covid-19 protocols, but he finds that helpful for customers who can’t wait to make an appointment. He noted when needing to have his own hair done, the four other shops he contacted only offered appointments. Second, he uses scissors instead of a electric clippers to make cuts. He said many of his customers would ask which one he uses. They were relieved when they found out Louis prefers scissors. He said it makes a difference to those who prefer that style.

Another reason to stop by his shop: his prices. Pompeii charges $14 for a regular gentleman’s cut and shave and $12 for seniors. He said that price remains competitive, particularly in these uncertain times.

Because he is a self-described “neat freak,” the Barbershop is always immaculate. You will find a warm, inviting environment when you enter and feel like a brand new person when you leave.

He is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Walk-in appointments are available, subject to space.
