Increase In Travel Is Causing Travel Prices To Rise

TravelTips

Shop In RI Selects: East Beach, Charlestown Island’s

Shop In RI select as the RI’s French Best KeptPolynesia Secret. as their #1 romantic getaway destination.

Prices for many travel expenses are higher in the summer of 2021 than a few months before. The price increases vary by expense type and the travel destination. A rebound in leisure travel is fueling the rising travel costs. Business travel may resume in the fall as more people first return to the office before traveling again for meetings and conferences, causing prices to propel higher yet. The April 2021 U.S. Travel Association Travel Price Index shows a 9.5% year-over-year increase. There’s also a 30.1% increase in transportation costs for the same period, primarily because of rising gas prices. As a fair comparison, many domestic travel restrictions were still in place for April 2020. States didn’t begin reopening until May 2020 (at the earliest), but many people didn’t make their first post-pandemic trips until 2021 after becoming fully vaccinated or when more travel restrictions lifted. For example, the daily TSA screenings for many days in April 2020 were below 100,000. The busiest day (April 30, 2020) logged 171,563 screenings. The busiest day in April 2021 (April 18, 2021) had 1,572,383 visitors. That’s quite a change but well below the 2019 daily average between 2 and 2.5 million. Here’s a closer look at the rising prices by each travel sector.

Airfare Prices Finding pandemic flight bargains is difficult. Alaska Airlines reports the average fare price for June 2021 is higher than in 2019. Other domestic airlines are reporting a similar pricing effect. Cheap fares were still available in the opening months of 2021. But as the nation and the world reopens, prices and travel searches began increasing in March 2021. Popular flight routes and peak travel weekends have the highest fares. Flying to less popular destinations or using alternate airports may help you find lower prices. Booking flights several weeks or months in advance can be 4 Shop In RI

Grainsley’s Kitchen + Drinks Pizza You Will Not Want To Stop Eating By Jennifer Coates If there are two things in the world that Danny Holleran loves, its pizza and family (and not necessarily in that order)! In fact, he can’t imagine what life would be like without either of them ~ they are a winning combination that have now been given a new place to shine at Holleran’s year-old restaurant Grainsley’s Kitchen + Drinks in Warwick. Named after his two nieces Grayson (aged 5) and Ainsley (age 18 months), Grainsley’s Kitchen + Drinks features “pub style pizza” that you have to taste to believe. Not satisfied with the kind of ho-hum pizza found in most pizzerias, Holleran set out to recreate his own hybrid version of his two favorite styles of pizza, Neapolitan and New York-Style. His quest for this “perfect” pizza led him to the prestigious New York School of Pizza in Staten Island, NY where he learned at the hand of masters how to make the crust and sauce that now set his pizza apart from the rest. Holleran always knew that pizza would be part of his life story, and so, after twenty years in the restaurant business, when an opportunity to own and operate his own restaurant arose, he leapt at the chance. On March 18th of 2020, just days before the state shut down, Holleran was handed the keys to what would become the realization of a lifelong dream. He would have a chance to share his signature version of pubstyle pizza ~ a basic style of pizza found throughout specialty shops in Massachusetts ~ and introduce Rhode Islanders to this refined process of making pizza. It didn’t take long for Holleran to realize that he would need the help of his talented and generous family members to bring Grainsley’s Kitchen to life. With the physical labor of his brothers, the creative eye of his mother (hence the gorgeous, chic and yet homey décor) and the culinary expertise of his brother Justin (the restaurant’s chef), Grainsley’s Kitchen went from a dream to reality. Customers will now find a fullservice bar with a “single pour” concrete countertop, comfy banquettes, modern lighting, a breezy floorplan, an edgy aesthetic, and yet classic, timeless design. The showpiece of the restaurant is its open kitchen where hungry customers can watch Justin work his magic. It is a sensory experience to visit this new restaurant in 10 Shop In RI

the heart of Conimicut Village - the sights, sounds and aromas! Today, customers can dine-in or take-out some of Grainsley’s signature pizzas whose crispy crusts and savory sauces are made right in plain sight. With Holleran’s guidance, Justin creates the crusts which mark the uniqueness of this pizzeria. The crusts are thin and crunchy and made on the premises from a dough that rises before it hits the oven. The pizzas are always ten inches round and are loaded with toppings of every imaginable combination. The red sauce is made fresh every day, simmered low and slow, just like it should be made for optimal flavor and just the way Holleran was taught at “Pizza School!” Justin and Danny are creative and adventurous with their pizzas and sauces. Check out some of their specialty pies: the Angry Hawaiian ~ sweet pineapple, salty bacon and jalapenos drizzled with a spicy habanero sauce; the Balboa ~ mortadella, capicola, genoa salami, lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, red onions, and pickles served with oil and

There are even more options, many of which are concocted by Justin just for that day! Of course if you are a traditionalist, you can always “build-your-own” from a huge selection of fresh veggies and meats. This pub-style pizza is as close to what you can find anywhere on the streets of Manhattan’s iconic, pizza-loving West Village. Not to be outdone by the delicious pizza are the other mouth-watering items on the menu here at Grainsley’s. The lightly hand-breaded mozzarella triangles are to-diefor, the sandwiches, wraps, fresh salads, golden fries, and finger-licking good chicken wings simply cannot be beat. (PS: There are also FRIED OREOS for dessert!) The food is by far the best reason to visit Grainsley’s. Everything is made from scratch, on-site, fresh and never frozen. Bring your friends. Bring your family. Bring your neighbor. Make a beeline to this fresh culinary destination in Warwick. Fans of Grainsley’s pizza who don’t live close to Warwick can find them in the frozen food section of Dave’s Marketplace. They are showcased here as part of “Dish Up RI” which features the work of local restaurants and chefs. Grainsley’s Kitchen + Drinks is located at 745 West Shore Road. Open Wednesday to Friday, 3:00pm to 9:00pm, Saturday, noon to 9:00pm and Sunday, noon to 7:00pm. Check out their full menu at www.grainsleys. com or call at 401-737-4992 to place your order. Announcing the RI Hospitality Association’s “Consumer Confidence” Campaign By Dale J. Venturini, President/CEO, Rhode Island Hospitality Association

Just a few short months ago, I discussed here how critically important it is that Rhode Island’s hospitality industry regains the confidence of its consumers. For over a year now, our industry’s businesses have gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the safety of their guests and employees. Our staff is among the most carefully trained of any industry, and hospitality is the most regulated for safety measures. From implementing increased cleanliness protocols, to testing staff for the virus, rearranging dining rooms to promote proper social distancing, expanding outdoor dining operations and more, our industry has followed every public safety directive and responded accordingly. In an effort to better educate the general public of the industry’s commitment to them, the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA) is proud to announce its “Consumer Confidence” campaign, which aims to reinforce safety measures for both patrons and business operators while also instilling a sense of confidence in the public to safely visit their favorite

restaurants, hotels and other hospitality businesses. Additionally, the campaign will also focus on addressing the industry’s current workforce shortage by encouraging those in need of work to consider the viable employment opportunities within the industry. As vaccination opportunities become more available, we hope that our guests who have been unsure about dining in their favorite restaurant, or visiting our hotels will have a renewed sense of confidence and will start going out again. As we begin to resume ‘normal life,’ we understand that many may still be hesitant to get back out there and so our “Consumer Confidence” campaign is designed to reassure those on-the-fence consumers, as well as those individuals who are looking for meaningful work opportunities, that our industry considers the health and wellbeing of our guests and our staff to be of paramount importance, and that we are acting accordingly. From targeted public service announcements, to prominent advertising displays and an industry-operator focused social media campaign, our mission to regain consumer confidence is one that will span many mediums, shine a light on different perspectives and demonstrate the lengths to which our industry has gone to operate safely and efficiently. Every industry is taking precautions as directed to ensure the health of their employees and the public, but none more than the hospitality industry. Hotels are a home away from home and as such, our industry takes the utmost pride in taking every step to provide our guests with a safe, comfortable and enjoyable stay. Likewise, the restaurant industry follows some of the most stringent rules and regulations of any business sector in our state and we take this responsibility very seriously. With most of New England’s states currently in the process of reopening, or planning to reopen in the near future, and with vaccination rates steadily rising, a return to ‘normalcy’ is closer than it has been in a long time. With that in mind, our industry is likely poised for a busy summer season and beyond. We want everyone to know that we are ready to welcome them back, and want them to feel confident in their decision to dine or stay with us.

Dale J. Venturini

Our business owners and staff are your neighbors, friends and family, and they need our help. Please support our industry, because in Rhode Island, hospitality matters! #RIHospitality

SLOW-COOKED COFFEE-RUBBED BRISKET Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails

THE PERFECT LOBSTER ROLL Our annual BOYZ weekend at my house is over, and it was a huge success. No small factor in that success was the food we all brought to the table. I made my lobster rolls, and got thumbs-up from all who tried them. Last year, I was having dinner at The Boat House restaurant in Tiverton, RI, with my buddy, Lee, who lives in Maine half the year, and we started talking about what makes the perfect lobster roll. Often, when you go to a restaurant and order one, they’ll first ask if you want it cold with mayonnaise or warm with butter. (A warm lobster roll with melted butter, we were told by our bartender, Cayce, is called “Connecticut style.”) The three of us discussed the mayonnaise-to-lobster ratio, and other significant factors. The final conclusion was that everyone likes their lobster roll a little differently. It’s certainly easy to go to a clam shack or seafood restaurant to get one, but nothing beats making one yourself.

One of our favorite restaurants here in Rhode Island is Fluke Newport in…well…Newport. We’ve dined there for years, but big changes happened last summer when they hired a new chef. We met Chef Eddie Montalvo just after he had arrived at Fluke, and we were impressed with his new menu. We came back for another visit just over a month ago, and meeting Eddie again, we thought we would invite him and his family to our home someday for a visit. Well, that “someday” is tomorrow, and the reality that I’m going to be cooking for a real chef for the first time in my life is making me a bit nervous!

When I make my own lobster rolls, freshness is key. I always start with live lobsters. I get them from my lobster man I went to Twitter for some help. Baffoni’s Poultry Farm By Jenn Lombari When a local family business has a long history and reputation for having a quality product and excellent customer service, it’s no surprise that the community would come together to help them out when tragedy strikes; Eighty five years to be exact. Back in April of 2021, Baffoni’s Poultry Farm started their morning off with a fire in one of the coops that tragically killed about 3000 chickens. I caught up with Adam Baffoni and he told me of the incredible outreach from customers and neighbors and how they plan to move forward. After the loss of 3000 chickens in a devastating structure fire, how did Baffoni’s move forward to keep business going? What was it like that day and the weeks after? To be honest, the only reason we can really move forward after something like this is because of how long we have been here and how well established we are in the local community. By the time we all made it to the farm that morning to see what was going on, everyone was already getting texts and phone calls, and that didn’t stop all day. The phone in the store didn’t really stop ringing with friends, family, and other businesses and patrons asking if everyone was alright and what they could do to help. Having that kind of support makes moving forward from something like this possible, and we had a lot of regulars and new customers come out to the store that week to support us, which is always a huge help.

Are you rebuilding already? We are taking a bit of time to decide exactly what we want to do. The coop that caught fire had been built in the 50’s and a lot of things have changed in agriculture since then, so instead of rushing to rebuild the same thing that was there, we are considering some other options as well. Did you find out what caused the fire? Not exactly. It likely could have been caused by one of the heaters we use in the coops, but it’s also possible that it was electrical. The building is old, and so is much of the wiring. Were those chickens for eggs or meat? They were for meat, and just about fully grown. It’s really sad to have lost so many animals, but we’re grateful that there weren’t more birds. That coop has 2 stories and the 2nd story was empty. If it had happened just a couple of days later, we would have lost a new flock of baby chicks too.

How many customers do you think you serve per week? It’s so hard to say. In our retail store alone we’re helping over 500 customers per week, but that doesn’t include all of the restaurants, markets, and other farms we work with. But we’re always growing! We are currently working to get a home delivery service started so that we can serve more of Rhode Island as conveniently as possible! The store remained open. Were you able to carry on smoothly as far as catering to customers? Thankfully we were! On the day of the fire, we weren’t operating at quite full capacity, partially because we were all busy dealing with what was happening and partially because the road had to be closed off for the fire department to run the hose. But since then we’ve been able to keep up our regular business. We’re lucky to have enough flocks of birds that we can get through losing one without holding up our business completely. Baffoni’s also grows and sells fresh produce. What produce will you be growing this season? What is available when? As always, we’re going to have plenty of fresh produce all summer! Now that the warm weather is here to stay, we’ll see a lot of lettuce and other greens, and once we get into July, then we start to see some of the summer vegetables like heirloom tomatoes, summer squash, eggplant, cucumbers, and plenty more.

Baffoni’s Poultry Farm is located at 324 Greenville Avenue in Johnston. It’s not too late to help! Support this local business by stopping in at their store which is located on the farm and purchase fresh meat and produce right from the source. For dinner, or for your cookout this summer, Baffoni’s Poultry Farm is ready to serve you. Shop In RI 21

YOGA Really Work? IF SO, HOW?

BY SUSAN GAZERRO

We are all trying to do a million things at one time. Day in and day out, we are trying to do it all. Funny thing is, we never really feel accomplished or at peace. Very few of us know how to truly relax. Yoga, pilates, and meditation are perfect for refocusing, regrouping, and basically cleansing the mind and body. Through yoga, we can experience the feeling of safety in our bodies. Safety in our own bodies? What does that mean? It all begins with our breathing. Our breathing anchors us into the present moment and empowers us to self-regulate. Every breath we take is vital to our well-being. We just don’t think about it or concentrate on it because to us, breathing is second nature. The philosophy of yoga is to re-educate the body and mind through movement, breathing, and stillness. One becomes mindful and self-aware. Stress levels are reduced. Yoga is time to think and focus on ourselves. Time to detox the mind. We become one with our mind, without being attached to everyday life issues and stories. It’s awareness, but not ownership. It’s a time when we can think clearly without interference from outside influences. 26 Shop In RI

Tragic events can leave lasting impressions on the mind. Trauma is not only an event, but an experience held inside the body. The body remembers neglect, abuse, and terror. Trauma keeps us trapped between regret of the past and fear of the future. As we move through the yoga postures, we refocus, ground ourselves in our bodies and in our strength. We let go of all those negative experiences. Besides all of the mental benefits of yoga, there are also many physical benefits. Our bodies become much more flexible. I was the least flexible person until I faithfully started stretching and incorporating yoga into my routine. Within a short period, it was amazing how much further I could stretch without feeling a pull or pain. Other benefits include, soothing sciatica, relieving lower back pain, relieving tension in the neck and shoulders, strengthening hips, knees, and feet, improving digestion, and even losing weight. Over the last 20 years, yoga has exploded on a global level. Yoga is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body. Yoga focuses on breathing patterns,

really matter is causing us to lose sight of what’s important: our health, our family, our happiness, etc.

and clears the mind. Yoga also assists with professional sports’ training and physical rehabilitation of all kinds. As a fitness instructor I am focused on cardio, weight training, resistance training, marathon training, etc., however; yoga, and stretching are just as important to the mind, body, and soul, as is physical activity. Although yoga does provide physical benefits, it also reaffirms that calming the body and being still are ways to keep the mind in shape. Yoga and meditation go hand in hand. We take care of everything in our lives, and those who exercise do take care of their bodies, but without a strong cleanse of toxins of the mind, and everything else in our life turns to chaos. When you feel good mentally, everything else falls into place. Life is often too stressful, especially now. We all need to stop and think about what really matters. What is really important? This is where yoga is so helpful. It allows us to slow down. We need to stop and just “be” once in a while. All of this craziness that doesn’t

As a fitness instructor, I am also all about moving the body. The less you move, the more it hinders you and moving will become problematic. My mom has bad knee issues. I ensure that she walks and moves everyday. I explained to her that the more she moves, the stronger she will become. I am all about the physical, however; I have learned so much about “stillness” and yoga, meditation, and how they are in combination, so vital to our well-being. One great saying is “The body benefits from movement, while the mind benefits from stillness.” These practices are what cleanse the mind. You need a clean, clear mind to have a fulfilling life. The thing about meditation is that it enables us to be the best version of ourselves. Go within yourself to find strength and peace so the world cannot blow your candle out. Yoga is not about being good at something, it’s about being good to yourself. We all need to slow down and take care of ourselves. We talk a good talk, but how many of us really do it? Yoga is a great way to start that renewal. You come first. When you put YOU first, everything else falls in place, and without effort. Shop In RI 27

knew early on I was good at doing, although I was nervous at first. Additionally, I like to make people looking and feeling good.” Pompeii differs from other places in two respects. First, he allows walk-in appointments. The shop still maintains Covid-19 protocols, but he finds that helpful for customers who can’t wait to make an appointment. He noted when needing to have his own hair done, the four other shops he contacted only offered appointments. Second, he uses scissors instead of a electric clippers to make cuts. He said many of his customers would ask which one he uses. They were relieved when they found out Louis prefers scissors. He said it makes a difference to those who prefer that style. Another reason to stop by his shop: his prices. Pompeii charges $14 for a regular gentleman’s cut and shave and $12 for seniors. He said that price remains competitive, particularly in these uncertain times.

Louis Pompeii has been involved with making people look good for more than two decades. His first store in Downtown Smithfield had customers constantly coming in for his colorful take on anything and everything. The clientele loved his old-style approach to cutting and styling hair. Life was good and Louie had plenty to be thankful for… …until life threw him a curve ball and everything changed. He was forced to start over and reestablish himself to a new base of customers. His new location at 146 Waterman Ave., in North Providence, opened a few weeks ago. He not only hopes his Smithfield-based customers return (Louis has been using word-of-mouth advertising to inform people of the move. Unfortunately, Pompeii said he didn’t get their contact information before the Smithfield store closed), but would also love to introduce himself to a new community. “Along with my sister, Debbie Baldassarre, who does nails on the East Side (of Providence), we each have a license to practice Cosmetology,” Pompeii said. “It was something I 32 Shop In RI

Gina Marcil:

Her Creations, Her Treasures, and Clowny By Jenn Lombari

Collecting anything can be fun but it can get especially interesting when you are digging into history and the stories behind certain finds. Learning about the past and the people attached to the items, along with the quality and craftsmanship of certain pieces, that of which certainly aren’t reflected in today’s products. Gina of Gina’s Vintage and Gina’s Creations developed an interest in treasure hunting as a child and it has become a major part of her life as an adult. I caught up with her for a quick Q&A session. Continue reading and be sure to check out her social media pages for new finds, where she will be selling, and to keep up with Clowny… When did you start collecting and selling vintage items? What started it all? It all started with my mom. She loved to go to tag sales and craft fairs, and she loved unique things. And my Granny, I always loved the wringer washer machine she still used, and I was fascinated about how she saved her grease in a jar, I thought it was so gross but I recognized that she was making use of something that would normally be thrown away. In my neighborhood there was a few yearly tag sales and I waited all year and I loved talking with the elderly people and hearing their stories about their items. I loved that so many things were made by hand.

Where do you sell your vintage items? Online, antique malls, etc. I do mostly online sales, but I do a show at least 2-3 times a month or more. You can check out Gina’s Vintage here:

So I love Victorian items. Anything 1800s, up to 1930s are my favorite eras. I do love any vintage of course but I love the old stuff. I can’t get over the craftsmanship, creativity and quality! Is it hard to let go of some finds? You must keep some for yourself, no?

with the phone on video chat. She was extremely active for about 3 weeks. She has calmed down BUT she comes about once a week or so and each time it’s more and more intense! I am not scared, she is a happy playful childlike spirit that has come to stay with me. And I am ok with it. You can keep up with Clowny on Instagram, follow the hashtag #adventureswithclowny

So my house is not that big and that’s a good thing!! I like to keep cool clown stuff, Bakelite anything, Victorian EAPG, Lacy Glass and Victorian Transferware. I have a huge collection of dolls!! Omg!! Most are gifted to me believe it or not, I pick up one every once in awhile. It’s not hard to sell stuff because I get the thrill of buying it and finding it, and learning about it. Then it is time to pass it along to its new owner! Please tell me about Clowny! How and when did you acquire her and what has been going on? CLOWNY!! Well I got Clowny last fall. She was only $2 and pretty beat up, she is life sized about 4 feet, handmade from the 1930s. I drove 4 hours round trip to get her. When I started video chatting with friends on FaceTime about 2 months ago she very vividly made herself known. I got her a meter, and she loves to beep her meter and she likes to play

she could make some appearances at the Paranormal conventions!!!! What has been your favorite part of buying and selling vintage items? I love learning about history and daily life, and some people go to school and read history books, and then there’s people like me who actually hunt each item down, research it and learn from touching the item and asking people about it, and looking at how it was made or why was it made, it’s fascinating!!

Do you feel like a new door has opened for you since Clowny came into your life? Maybe you’ll end up on a TV show with her? Would you ever sell her? Well I am actually surprised that she doesn’t get as much attention as I thought she would. I have good documentation too. I would NEVER sell Clowny!! If anything I would like a medium to come and visit her, and I will repair her and

Style Profile Day in the life Ashley Erling, Executive Producer

The Rhode Show, WPRI Channel 12 By Desi Baker | Myke Yeager Photography Ashley Erling is the powerhouse behind popular morning television program, The Rhode Show on WPRI Channel 12. She is the executive producer and is often on air as well, promoting amazing things that are happening in our state. She is a hard-worker, early riser, and fashion and beauty influencer. Read about the day in the life of this superwoman, who is also one of the most fashionable women in Rhode Island.

3:30am Alarm goes off. I know, I know- not normal, but it works for me. Make a cup of coffee and watch the news while I wake up. I have to watch the news first thing every morning, so I know what’s going on in the world before I start my day. Check my email, respond to anything urgent, leave the rest for when I get into the office. 4:30am Out the door to get to the gym by 5. I absolutely love working out first thing in the morning. It wakes me up, puts me in a great mindset, and gives me energy to tackle the day. It also frees up the rest of my day for work, meeting up with people, or relaxing. 6am Back home, scurry to get ready to make it to work on time. This usually does not go well.

7am Get to the studio. Go over the day’s show with our producer.

Make changes and rearrange as needed. At 7:30 am, the whole team joins us, and we go over the finished rundown together so everyone knows what’s happening that day on the show. We’ll brainstorm ideas, talk about any upcoming tapings or shoots. Then everyone heads back to their desks to finish writing, read over scripts, and prepare anything else needed for the show.

9-10am Showtime! The best hour of the day! I’ll watch the show and correspond with our producer about everything that’s happening. Watching the show as a viewer is helpful to get a sense of how everything flows, what works, what doesn’t, and come up with ideas on how we can improve. 10am-1pm A lot of scheduling. I manage all interviews, segments,

shoots, tapings, and everything in between so I spend a good chunk of the day keeping everything on track. This is also the time I’ll meet with co-workers and/or sponsors about upcoming segments. We’ll work on developing concepts and fine tune talking points. In addition to “The Rhode Show,” I also oversee all our local programming so depending on the time of year, I’m probably also working on a seasonal initiative… or multiple.

2pm Generally, I’ve been working from home in the afternoon. It’s 36 Shop In RI

Myke Yeager Photography mostly emails and phone calls right now, but as things start to get back to normal, I’m looking forward to having more in-person meetings over coffee or cocktails. Lately, I’ve been using this time of the day to be creative and brainstorm ideas. This is probably my favorite part of the job. I’m always looking for new, fun ideas, and concepts for all the programming I oversee. During the better part of the pandemic, I’ve really had to stretch myself to come up with creative ways to keep the content engaging and fun, without being able to have live guests in-studio. I’m thankful that we are starting to have some limited guests back live, but I’m also grateful for the opportunity we’ve had to grow. We’ve all done things this year we’ve never dreamed of, and to come out the other side with some new strengths and skills is a silver lining.

4pm Early bird dinner! Yes, I eat dinner around 4pm, and I am proud of it- back off! I’ll throw on some tunes while I’m cooking and mindlessly scroll through various social media to see what’s going on. After dinner is chill time. I’ll watch whatever shows I’m into at the moment. Crime shows tend to relax me. I especially love watching old episodes of SVU, Criminal Minds, or Blue Bloods. Those are my comfort shows, and for some reason lull me to sleep!

8pm Lights out! I always tell people I have the bedtime of a kindergartner, but in reality, they probably stay up later than me, and I am ok with that! Find out more about Ashley and The Rhode Show at https://www. wpri.com/rhode-show/

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR HIGH-INCOME, HIGH-DEBT PROFESSIONALS By: Carrie McPherson

Doctors, lawyers and other highly-trained professionals often have their sights on lucrative salaries once they complete their courses of study – but many are also saddled with a less pleasant graduation gift: outstanding student loans. For those who’ve landed a well-paying job in their desired fields, the dual reality of commanding a big salary while being encumbered with debt can lead to financial mistakes. But, as with many complexities in life, having a plan in place can help. If you find yourself in the camp of high-income, highdebt professionals, consider the following four steps to manage your finances, pay down your obligations and pave the way to a confident financial future. 1. Spend wisely The income you earn today may seem staggering compared to what you were accustomed to in the years before receiving your degree. Before you increase your spending, it’s important to take a step back and consider how to tackle multiple financial goals at once. Start by earmarking part of each paycheck for your future goals. Knowing you have dedicated savings for future purchases like a new home or sending your kids to college can help you have confidence in your everyday finances – including an occasional splurge. However, until you have your other debts paid off or dramatically reduced, it may not be prudent to take on a large mortgage or a loan for an expensive vehicle. 2. Manage your debt effectively Keep up on student debt and if you can, consider accelerating your payments. Paying extra will not only help you eliminate the debt sooner but will reduce the total amount you pay in interest. Refinancing the debt to ease your monthly payment schedule may be an option, but given your likely cash flow, it may not be necessary. If you have accrued other debts such as car loans or credit card borrowing, repay them as quickly as possible. Make it a priority to reduce the impact that debt has on your monthly budget. 40 Shop In RI

3. Start saving for retirement A good rule of thumb for any young professional is to try to save 10 percent (and more, if possible) of their income in accounts designed to build wealth for the long run. While the idea of retirement may seem a lifetime away, starting to accumulate money in a retirement account as soon as possible can be especially effective. Those who begin saving for retirement in their 20s or early 30s can most effectively leverage the power of compounding interest. At this age, you have time on your side and the ability for your investments to grow over the decades to come. 4. Keep it all in perspective You’ve worked hard to get where you are, and earning a big paycheck is a justifiable reward. Your professional and financial journey is just beginning, so treat your financial life as a marathon, not a sprint. At the very least, focus on living within your means. To the extent you are able, try to live even more modestly with the goal of paying down debts as quickly as possible. You never know what the future holds and what opportunities may arise. Your income level could change, either by your own choice or due to unavoidable circumstances. Take advantage of your good fortune today to strengthen your financial future. Carrie A. SHOULD YOU PAY OFF YOUR HOME MORTGAGE EARLY? By: Edward Pontarelli

Many people who carry a home mortgage dream of the day when they will no longer face the burden of a monthly house bill. They want the financial freedom – and the satisfaction – of owning their home outright. Does that mean you should make paying off your mortgage early a priority? The answer depends on your circumstances and goals. One question you should ask yourself is, “Would the money you spend on your home loan be better spent on or invested in another financial opportunity?” Getting a different perspective on debt Reducing debt as early as possible could help you avoid costly interest rate charges. You may have experience with this principle if you’ve eliminated credit card debt or a car loan. While your home mortgage is a type of debt, the same concept may not apply. In certain instances, staying true to your repayment terms may be best for your financial situation for these reasons: • The interest rates on mortgages tend to be more reasonable than other types of credit, and the terms often provide more certainty (30-year fixed rate mortgage). • The interest you pay can potentially be deducted from your taxes. This deduction makes a mortgage much more cost-efficient on an after-tax basis than most other forms of debt. If mortgage interest is part of your tax strategy, consider if you’ll be able to itemize deductions once you own your home outright. On the other hand, the earlier you pay off your loan, the longer you could have the opportunity to invest the money each month. This additional investment could help you achieve a more secure financial future. To see if investing may make sense, compare your interest rate to what you could reasonably expect to earn in market returns. Factoring in time As you evaluate your situation, you should consider the time you expect to stay in your home and how close you are to retirement. Those who are approaching retirement or are already retired may prefer to be done with the monthly expense of a mortgage. Since this is also a stage in life when your investment approach may be more conservative, the tradeoff of reducing your balance rather than investing may not be as significant. Those who are in this position may want to consider if accelerating payments today would help reduce housing expenses in retirement. 42 Shop In RI

The same is true for those who plan to stay in their homes for a long time. Reducing your loan may be appealing if it results in years of living without a house bill. Younger homeowners should explore methods of accelerating their mortgage pay down. Among the strategies to consider are contributing more money each month, refinancing your mortgage over a shorter term (i.e., a 15-year mortgage instead of a 30-year one) or occasionally making a larger, lump sum payment to reduce the balance. Considering the emotional side Deciding if you should carry a home mortgage is not only a rational decision, but an emotional one as well. Your home is where you raise your family, create memories and return to each day. How important is it for you to know that you will own your home free and clear? As you think about your decision, be sure you’re in a position to not jeopardize your financial security today by putting additional funds toward your home. Adjusting your monthly bill will impact your cash flow, and you’ll want to have flexibility in your budget to cover unexpected expenses. Review your financial circumstances carefully before you decide what’s right for you. STANLEY TREE SERVICES Helps Clean up the Community By Mark Berger

One way to determine the success of a company is their growth. Businesses that treat their customers like family, devote themselves toward helping others and provide quality service are factors that either make or break that endeavor. While there are other reasons why some people succeed, and others do not, these are the most important ones. Those are also the very reasons why Stanley Tree Service, Inc., located on George Washington Highway (Rte. 116) in Smithfield, has been a fixture in town. Their winning formula stems from their Founder and CEO, Stanley Zuba, who ensures that the people he employs are taken care of properly. Bruce Berard, CTSP, CUSP, the company’s Vice President and COO, knows that firsthand. Berard said he began with the company in 2008 in an entry-level job. He worked up the ranks before earning a General Foreman position. In 2014, he left to assume a role with National Grid as the Manager of Transmission for New England. Berard returned to Stanley Tree Service in 2018, where he took over in his current role. So, as Berard proves, you can go back home again. “Stanley and I were discussing working together again,” said Berard. “We had another endeavor going on the side and he wanted me to return in a larger capacity. Tree work is in my blood, and that’s where I wanted to be.”

The company focuses on tree removal and utility line trimming, among its many services. They can do anything from pruning a small tree in the yard to assisting on a major cleanup. That has happened several times recently. They were called upon to help during Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Katrina as well as the brutal winter of nor’easters from a few years ago. They are part of a network of first responders who are called upon to help restore the community. Their staff also resembles a small town. With more than 230 employees and 250 pieces of equipment in its arsenal, they are ready to serve when called upon. Among their “toys” include six log trucks, over 60 bucket trucks and was the first tree company in the state to purchase its own crane specifically for tree work. They now own three such cranes. They have been called upon plenty. In addition to those aforementioned projects, Stanley Tree Service worked during a devastating ice storm in Maine for Central Maine Power. They worked there for three weeks straight at 18-hour days. About the employee commitment…they are an employee-owned company. That comes with how the company initially formed in 1986. Zuba started cutting grass for neighbors and did other small projects until he was able to provide tree services as well. Since then, he has built his business to service Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut. “Stanley Tree is a firm believer in recognizing the people who helped build this business and in giving back to the community we call home,” said Zuba.

Berard concurs. He said the owner has a long-standing history of helping others. There was an employee with a sick child. Berard said the owner made sure the family was provided for—out of his own pocket. He has donated to numerous charities and remains well known in town. That is something Berard said Zuba prides himself in doing. “Stanley has a huge heart, which is not always something you see in the business world,” Berard said. As a result of their continuing growth, the company is hiring for multiple positions. Among those openings include: Tree Removal, Tree Pruning, Stump Grinding, Plant Health Care, Tree/Shrub Planting, Utility Line Trimming, Commercial Vegetation Management and Residential Estimating. They offer competitive compensation and benefits while offering opportunities for growth and advancement. Further details may be found on their website listed at the end of this story. Stanley Tree Service, Inc., is an employee-owned and operated tree company that has been serving the Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts communities since 1986. They offer services in tree removal, stump grinding, tree trimming and pruning, corrective pruning, brush mowing, plant health care, crane services, land clearing and Arborist consultations for residential, commercial, and utility customers. Stanley Tree Service is available 24/7 for all your emergency needs. From high winds to tornadoes, hurricanes, severe thunderstorms and blizzards, homeowners can count on Stanley Tree Services to work diligently to clean the fallen tree quickly and efficiently. Is it Okay to Powerwash a Roof? My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www.LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting.com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column! A question that has been asked of us quite often over the years is whether or not it is okay to powerwash a roof? The answer is: Sort of. In terms of actually POWERwashing the roof, as in using a ton of pressure, I believe this should NEVER be done. Roofs in general have a tendency, particularly when facing certain directions (example: north side) or being exposed to certain environmental conditions (example: consistent dampness over long periods of time), to grow a variety of all types of crud on them – algae, mold, fungus, mildew, to name a few… So if washing with a bit of pressure is NOT how I would recommend to approach things, how then would I suggest someone clean their roof? After all, wouldn’t the ability to clean your roof prolong the lifetime of the roof? Of course it would! Instead of washing with pressure, I recommend washing with a ‘soft wash’ process utilizing organically-based chemicals that are meant to get rid of the unsightliness, without damaging the roof itself. There are different versions of these types of organically-based products, all with varying degrees of success, but success nonetheless. Treating your roof with this type of soft wash process may require multiple applications. Once the treatments are concluded, they should prevent the type of growth that they were being used to eliminate, for years to come. These processes are able to be used on all types of roofs: 3-tab shingles, architectural shingles, low slope roofing, wooden shingles, etc., etc. We help work with clients all the time that find themselves in very confusing predicaments. These are folks whose roof seems to be structurally sound, but looks like it has been put 58 Shop In RI

through the wringer because of all the disgusting-looking microscopic organisms congregating on its surface. The soft wash process can work absolute wonders. Where an average roof may easily cost $10,000-$15,000 to replace, a soft wash procedure can typically be done for much less than $3,000. This type of process not only makes the roof look amazing once the method is complete and set in, but it preserves the roof from a shortened life cycle by getting rid of these tiny beings which, literally, eat away at surfaces. If ever hiring someone to conduct this type of treatment for you, it is imperative that it is done correctly. If anyone goes to wash a roof and is not experienced in doing so, a whole lot of damage can result. I would never recommend someone to wash their roof, soft wash process or not, if they have never tried their hand at washing a roof before and/or been trained to properly do it. If the correct technique is used, a roof can absolutely be safely washed without causing any damage, with eye-pleasing results that will have a protective, stabilizing effect on its surfaces for many years to come.

They’re all “AMP”ed Up

By Mark Berger Over the last century in Rhode Island, there have been numerous groups devoted to helping local marketing professionals achieve their goals. Member expertise ranged from advertising and public relations to graphic design and photography, with the end game to not only further the local community, but each other, as well. Those are the reasons why the Association of Marketing Professionals Rhode Island (AMP-RI) has thrived through the years. The group focuses on developing relationships within these industries, leading to projects and other such collaborative endeavors.

more people in these professions to join us and recognize the exposure they can receive.” The Association underwent various name changes over the years. AMP-RI evolved from an earlier group known as the Women’s Advertising Club of RI, founded in 1920. In 1996, WACRI merged with the Ad Club of Rhode Island, which then became the Ad Club of Southeastern New England, before ending in 1999. AMP-RI was initially called Advertising, Marketing & Public Relations of RI, before finalizing their current name in 2009.

One of the Association’s founders, Joyce Pucino, said that the way the group formed to what it has become today speaks well of its success.

AMP-RI now boasts an email roster of over 500 members statewide. Monthly meetings are held via Zoom, but in-person meetings are planned to resume later this year.

“When we started this group in 2008, we had about a dozen people as members,” said Pucino, who operates Pucino Print Consultants in North Kingstown. “It has undergone several changes and directions, but our goal of helping and mentoring others in these fields continues. We want to reach out to include

Betty Galligan showcase their own professional skills and expertise. Betty Galligan of Newberry Public Relations and Marketing in East Providence, will assume the role as association president on July 1. Galligan will take over for Nicole Eller of The Spark Social in Providence, at that time. With decades of publicity experience, Betty’s new title means a chance to further the Association’s visibility and provide education and counsel to others. Her hope is to expand the group to marketing job seekers looking to get their foot in the door. “We have memberships for students and that has been helpful for everyone. They have access to a lot of learning opportunities and connections. We have also embraced digital marketing, which has opened some doors and connected the more experienced people with the newer ones in the field,” Galligan said. “Digital communications and social marketing is now so much easier as compared to the times of running the Ad Club, when mailing an invitation and waiting for RSVPs made everything take longer. We can get information out to everyone faster, easier, and save money in the process,” she added. Technology also provides a teachable moment. One of the more popular events held by AMP-RI before the pandemic was a seminar on how to make a website that is Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant. This is a topic that most people do not understand and is often overlooked. That event, held at Oomph, Inc. in Providence, was so popular that a

second overflow room had to be used. Galligan believes that the future holds many changes, but also potential for growth as well. “I look at this coming year’s programming as being focused on education, innovation, inspiration, and enlightenment for members,” said Galligan. She then added, “We have solopreneurs, nonprofits, and a mix of marketing professionals working in a variety of job levels and companies. We can really add value and takeaways that they can use in their practice of marketing right away.” The relatively inexpensive cost to join annually ($60 for professionals; $30 for students), makes it a worthwhile investment. Benefits include free access to events, discounted invitations to special seminars, listing in their membership directory, invitations to their private online community, and more. The Association of Marketing Professionals of Rhode Island’s mission is to be a catalyst for positive marketing and growth practices in Rhode Island. They are an engaged community of specialists, generalists, and curious learners, with a commitment to inspire, celebrate, and connect within its membership network. Most meetings are held on Tuesday nights from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm via Zoom or at various locations throughout the state. Additional information can be found by visiting the AMP-RI website at www.amp-ri.com, or can be found by calling Joyce Pucino at 401-886-5155, Betty Galligan at 401-433-5965, or email Betty@NewberryPR.com.

4-H Kids Surely Love Their Dogs By BRIAN LOWNEY

For the past 22 years, I have enjoyed the privilege of judging junior showmanship classes at American Kennel Club licensed dog shows held throughout New England and occasionally in other states such as Virginia and Missouri. Judging these classes of dogs not only allows me to see a variety of beautiful dogs, but also to observe the great talent that our young dog handlers possess, as they expertly present their canine charges in the ring. Shortly after I began judging, I received a call from the late Al Kirby, a top-ranked professional handler, trainer, and owner of Stonehouse Kennels in Westport, Massachusetts. He asked me to substitute for him at a 4-H match in New Hampshire, and told me that it would be a fun judging assignment and a great learning experience.

When I arrived at the show, I quickly learned that the 4-H competition referred to as Fitting and Showmanship classes were very different from those I was accustomed to judging. I was surprised to see mixed breed dogs allowed in the ring. Much to their credit, several young handlers exhibited family pets adopted from a local shelter. Another major difference was that I could ask the young handlers up to three questions about canine anatomy and their breed. In the case of a mixed breed canine, the handler was allowed to choose which ancestor to discuss. I was impressed by each handler’s enthusiasm and ability to artistically present their dog to its best advantage, which is often no small feat when exhibiting a mixed breed dog. Every animal was neatly groomed, with a brushed coat, trimmed nails, and clean teeth and ears. The competitors were judged, as they still are more than 20 years later, on their ring presentation, cleanliness, and condition of the animal, knowledge of canine anatomy, and whether their attire is in compliance with the prescribed 4-H uniform. Kirby was correct. I enjoyed my assignment, made some wonderful friends, and have been judging 4-H competitions throughout the Northeast for the past two decades. On a brutally hot July Sunday morning, I had the opportunity to judge 25 young 4-H handlers at the Stratham Fair in Stratham, New Hampshire. The talented exhibitors represented several local clubs scattered across the Granite State, and were eagerly

Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce has Plans for a Rebound Season! By Mark Berger With the ocean and scenic backdrops, Newport is viewed as a “destination.” Since last year at about this time, the pandemic curtailed would-be activities because of federal and state closure mandates. As 2021 has emerged, the region is resurging from local business leaders and official contributions. One local organization continues as a strong advocate for small businesses. The Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce, located on 513 Broadway, has been leading the forefront in regional businesses remaining vibrant and proactive. That means spending and investing in programs to navigate through these turbulent times. Executive Director Erin Donovan-Boyle has seen these changes firsthand and believes the best is coming soon. “Since the pandemic started, we have been pivoting our organization while serving the whole community, both members and nonmembers, through this economic uncertainty,” said Donovan- Boyle, who has served in numerous professional capacities before taking her current post six years ago. “The area is well rounded with sole proprietorships and main street bu78 Shop In RI

sinesses to larger defense and tech companies and all business stages and sizes in between. Our business community is made up of many primary industry sectors, which makes for a healthy and robust regional economy,” she added. The Chamber works toward Erin Donovan-Boyle making their members’ voices heard through regular advocacy at the municipal, state, and federal levels. They are heavily involved in government relations and economic development initiatives, which has been an important component of the organization’s ability to serve the needs of the community and ensure the demands of the small businesses are met. “Our business leaders have pulled together and partnered in many ways. We understand why the hospitality industry, who have been hardest hit, is so important to the Greater Newport region. They help to provide a quality of life and quality of place that attracts and retains talent for all sectors. We are looking forward to helping to build back up the hospitality industry and further diversify our regional economy to become even more resilient,” Donovan-Boyle said.

Newport will always draw interest from residents and non-residents alike. People plan trips, weddings, and engagements in Newport because of the world-class destination and amazing venues that are attractive for such occasions. These events lay the foundation for future visitors and residents who want to return to the region. While 2020 was a down year for the tourism and wedding industries because of the pandemic, 2021 presents more opportunity - more businesses are opening their doors, the public is getting vaccinated, more large-scale events are scheduled, restrictions are being reduced, and consumer confidence is growing. While events have changed because of the pandemic, the Chamber has adjusted to meet the local demand. The Chamber hosted more than five-dozen events in 2019, and pivoted in 2020, to host over 50 virtual events. They are hoping to have more outdoor, in-person events in the coming season and are looking forward to their first large-scale event on May 26th to honor their Excellence in Business Awards’ recipients. They are also planning their Women in Business Luncheon in July at Rosecliff. All events are subject to the rules of the day. Donovan-Boyle feels optimistic that protocols will be relaxed to the point where residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the events. Donovan-Boyle also touts the 34-member Board of Directors for their counsel during the last year. They are a composite of many business owners and leaders from throughout the region that work in tandem to advise and advocate for the region. They have roughly 1,000 members, down slightly from the 1,100 members they had in 2019. Donovan-Boyle cites the closing of some companies, retirements, and the pandemic as reasons for the reduced numbers. She expects more people to consider membership once the economic climate changes. In the interim, Donovan-Boyle said that the process of building a more resilient Greater Newport regional economy continues. “As a Chamber, we helped businesses with several state and federal programs that became available with the CARES Act. Technical assistance for funding resources, direct outreach, marketing and communications, and distribution of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) were just some of the actions taken to serve the business community,“ Donovan-Boyle explained. The ‘Take it Outside’ initiative was quite popular with area restaurants and the Chamber was able to provide heaters and tents from local vendors. The Chamber was also able to help coordinate supply chain needs between sectors to meet local needs. When it became difficult to purchase or rent tents because of the great demand in the region, some businesses were able to repurpose

their skills and products to meet that demand and support their community. One example is of a local sail company being able to switch gears and produce tents for restaurants, allowing those establishments to remain open longer into the season. “It was truly an example of how the Chamber can act as a business development tool for organizations and how our network of businesses can not only lead to new opportunities, but also a chance to support your local economy,” Donovan-Boyle said. The Chamber recently relocated its office into the Innovate Newport building on Broadway. The 33,000 square foot, 100 year old building was converted from a former school to an innovation hub. It sits downtown with additional office space for other office tenants, as well as co-worker opportunities and first class event and meeting space. The Chamber is always actively seeking new members. Business owners who are interested in joining the Chamber can share in its benefits and impact to the economic development and vitality of the region. Other amenities upon joining include numerous professional development and training opportunities, significant marketing and advertising offerings, access to important and current business related information, and being part of a growing network of businesses. “Chamber membership and engagement should be seen as one of the most affordable business development tools available to all small businesses, which has a broad impact for all. Investing in our regional Chamber is not only affordable and worthwhile, but the return on investment can be measured in the success of the entire business community,” Donovan-Boyle added. More details can be found by visiting their website at www. newportchamber.com. Or, please call their office at 401847-1608 during normal business hours. Shop In RI 79
