Free Apple from Delta costs passenger $500.

Beware when heading through customs with fruit.

Crystal Tadlock may think twice before accepting anything from a Delta attendant again. Flying back from Paris, the Colorado woman accepted a free apple handed out by an attendant and stuffed it in her carry-on bag—only to discover at customs that the fruit would cost her $500, KDVR reports. The customs agent “asked me if my trip to France was expensive and I said, ‘yeah,’” said Tadlock after her bag was randomly searched. “I didn’t really get why he was asking that question, and then he said ‘It’s about to get a lot more expensive after I charge you $500.’” She asked if she could toss the apple or eat it, but the agent said no. “It’s really unfortunate someone has to go through that and be treated like a criminal over a piece of fruit,” says Tadlock, who also lost her Global Entry Status. She blames Delta for handing out the fruit without warning, and says Customs should have cut her a break. Customs and Border Patrol responded by saying that “all agriculture items must be declared,” and a Delta spokesperson said “we encourage our customers to follow US Customs and Border Protection protocols.” For her part, Tadlock plans to fight the fine in court. “I understand the laws,” she says, per KPTV. “But once again, the apple is from Delta and I think that’s the most important part of this story.” 2 ShopInRI

Shop In RI Selects: Martha’s Vineyard as their top romantic getaway.

Far less developed than Cape Cod thanks to a few local conservation organizations - yet more cosmopolitan than neighboring Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard is an island with a double life. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the quieter (some might say the real) Vineyard quickens into a vibrant, star-studded place. The busy main port, Vineyard Haven, welcomes day-trippers fresh off ferries and private yachts to browse in its array of shops. Oak Bluffs, where pizza and ice cream emporiums reign supreme, has the air of a Victorian boardwalk. Edgartown is flooded with seekers of chic who wander tiny streets that hold boutiques, stately whaling captains’ homes, and charming inns. Summer regulars have included a host of celebrities over the years, among them Oprah Winfrey, Carly Simon, Ted Danson, Spike Lee, and Diane Sawyer; President Barack Obama and his family vacationed here nearly every summer of his two terms

'Western White House' Is Up for Sale

Richard Nixon's former oceanfront estate in San Clemente on the market for $63.5M

A little piece of history is on the market in California. An oceanfront estate in San Clemente once owned by Richard Nixon and dubbed the Western White House while he was in office is up for sale for $63.5 million. Nixon hosted everyone from Leonid Brezhnev to Frank Sinatra at the 5.45-acre estate, now owned by former pharmaceuticals exec Gavin Herbert. In addition to a 9,000-square-foot main house, the walled estate features a guesthouse, swimming pool, tennis court, greenhouse, 450 feet of beach front, and— given its location on an isolated bluff— panoramic ocean views.

Victim Crushed by Rock Found at Pompeii It’s not hard to figure out what killed a man whose remains were recently discovered at Pompeii. There is a massive stone block, probably hurled by a volcanic cloud, crushing the top part of his body. Determining why he was there takes more expertise: Archaeologists say there are lesions on his tibia that suggest he had a bone infection that slowed down his escape from the city after the AD79

eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. They believe the man, who was at least 30 years old, limped as he fled down the alley where his remains were found. “Initial observations would appear to indicate that the individual survived the first eruptive phase of the volcano, and subsequently sought salvation along the alley. Just Another Rib Recipe

The warm weather is here, and while your guests are waiting for a fully grilled dinner, put this amazing onion dip out as an appetizer. I recently made a huge batch of this dip for a “boy’s weekend,” and it was devoured in no time! Substitute carrot sticks and celery for the chips to keep it healthy. Once you try this, you’ll never go back to storebought again!

By Al Milukas

ONION DIP FROM SCRATCH

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 ½ cups diced sweet onions ¼ teaspoon salt 1 ½ cups sour cream ¾ cup mayonnaise ¼ teaspoon granulated garlic ¼ teaspoon white pepper ½ teaspoon salt chopped chives, to garnish In a pan over medium heat, saute the onions in the olive oil and salt until they are soft and barely caramelized, about 15 minutes. Remove them from the heat and set them aside to cool to room temperature. In a bowl, combine the rest of the ingredients, except the chives, then add the cooled onions and mix well. Refrigerate the dip and stir again before serving. Sprinkle the chopped chives on top to garnish. ShopInRI 7

“We Went A Little Askew” By: Jenn Lombari Photography: Dave Findlay

Describing themselves as “a community based bistro and entertainment venue,” Askew has taken up residence at 150 Chestnut Street in downtown Providence, the former home of The Century Lounge. Like the previous residents, Askew is hosting music events, but there is so much more happening in the space now. From comedy nights, to singer songwriter nights, and even jazz nights, there is something for everyone. Askew is the brainchild of Windsong Hadley. She is no stranger to the bar and entertainment business. Her love of music had her promoting bands at just 10 years old! She explained how a local band, Blues Alley, would give her a list of numbers to call and she would leave messages on answering machines letting people know where the band would be playing next. Hadley was working in Massachusetts in the early 2000s, and cover bands were the happening thing at the time. She had the experience and had met a lot of people over the years and wanted to start working with more original bands. She teamed up with a friend she had met through the business, John DiFruscio. After about ten years of friendship, they not only started dating, they started booking together at Firehouse 13 in Providence too. Together, they booked a multitude of local and national touring bands. Loud bands. Big shows. And always supporting the community by featuring artists at the venue and hosting benefit shows as well. She describes DiFruscio as “the most amazing human she has ever met in her life.” It makes sense that they are now engaged to be married. So with the closing of Firehouse 13, the couple moved on to book shows around the area at other venues and never lost steam. It only pushed them harder and they had a plan. 10 ShopInRI

On April 20, 2018, Askew opened its doors. Excited for their friends, family, and the idea of having a new live music venue in town, two hundred people filled the room on opening night. Neal and the Vipers played a live set and the staff knocked it out of the park from the front to the back of the house with only three hours of training. Hadley commented proudly, “I’m so lucky to have such a talented staff.” “A lot of people are confused,” Hadley said with a laugh. “People are used to us booking loud punk and metal shows and this is not that.” As Hadley and DiFruscio welcome everyone into Askew, they support all of the arts; DiFruscio will continue to book the more boisterous shows, they will just be booked at other venues around town. The room is decorated with memorabilia from the past Providence music scene. Flyers from clubs that no longer exist featuring bands that helped shape the scene are framed and hung on walls. Silk-screened concert posters were donated by Swamp Yankee Art. Cymbals were donated by Mike “Stumpy” from Neutral Nation and are part of the decor. Even donated guitars hang on the wall from locals Greggory Rourke, local musician and co-owner of The Parlour, and Askew kitchen help, Mike Baker. Close by the bar area is a piano, guitar, and even a trumpet that anyone is welcome to play. Spontaneous jams are strongly encouraged here. Almost everything in the room has a connection to someone or something local. It was a group effort through months of random call outs for objects-almost like a scavenger hunt.

There is also a gallery wall that features a mix of local artists displaying their work. All art on the gallery wall is for sale and the artists receive 100% of the profits. Hadley commented, “I want this to be a place where talented minds come together and cultivate. I also want everyone to feel welcome. I want someone to be able to show up alone and feel comfortable and make new friends. You can be new to town and not know anyone; you come in here and you fit right in.” Askew is hosting comedy open mic night on Tuesdays. This is where touring comics can also work on their new material. This leads up to comedy showcases on Sundays. Wednesday nights are for music bingo leading into singer songwriter events afterward. There is live music on Thursdays and Fridays. Saturday is jazz night. Local music is played on the speakers. You will never hear radio or national bands being played. All local breweries are featured at the bar (with a few exceptions). It’s all about supporting community and working together. “I Like Food. Food Is Good.” -Milo Skewers. The food is served on skewers. That’s their thing! Breakfast skewers with waffles, pancakes, French toast,

bananas, sausage. Let’s face it- it’s fun to eat food on a stick. Lasagna, meatballs, Cajun shrimp…there are even vegetarian options like brussels sprouts with balsamic glaze, Asian and buffalo style cauliflower, and several flavors of tater tots. There is even an “I told you so” item on the menu. When Hadley and DiFruscio, whose nickname is Cyco, went to Tennessee, he fell in love with fried bologna sandwiches. So the kitchen re-created his favorite snack with three different kinds of mustards and two different kinds of cheeses and they put it on skewers. It quickly became a favorite: “Cyco’s Fried Bologna Sandwich.” When asked, “Why skewers?” Hadley replied, “No one else is doing it!” And she’s right! Everything about Askew is unique and everyone is encouraged to come in and make themselves at home. New items are being added to the menu as new ideas come up. Follow them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for specials and see their website for the full menu, hours, and the event list.

Enamored with Edamame By Julia Romano

What is so enticing about a visually simple green pod with a few beans and a funny name-edamame (pronounced eda-mommy)? And what is it that makes edamame such a popular food choice? From its appearance, it doesn’t seem to be anything special, and it certainly doesn’t appear to be

appetizing. That’s exactly what I thought when I was first introduced to it. I’m not a vegetable lover by any means, and beans, especially, do not appeal to me in way, shape or form. But after eating it for the first time, even I found edamame to be not only yummy, but greatly addicting. I had never heard of edamame when I visited the popular Asian Nobu restaurant in New York City several years ago. My friends, who were vacationing with me, ordered it as an an appetizer and had to coax me into trying it. I finally caved, but have to admit that it wasn’t because of the beans, but most definitely the salt. Not a good thing, but I love salty food. After popping out the beans from a few, I likened it to eating sunflower seeds-once you start, it’s hard to stop. Ever since that first experience, I’ve been hooked and seek it out whenever and wherever available. From what I’ve learned, edamame is just another name for boiled green soybeans. It is often referred to as a superfood vegetable because of its exceptional nutritional value. What this means is that it contains all nine amino acids essential for the composition of proteins, enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, metabolic pathways, mental stabilization, and just about every function that takes place within the human body. It is also gluten free and has protein, fiber, and a bit of smart fat. And just ½ cup boosts up the protein, fiber, vitamin/ mineral content of one’s diet. Other health benefits of edamame are it can lower cholesterol; it does not raise one’s blood sugar; it is low in carbs as compared to its high protein content; it is rich in healthy fiber; it is loaded with vitamins and minerals; it can reduce the risk of breast cancer; it can reduce the symptoms of menopause; it may reduce the risk of prostate cancer; it may reduce bone loss; it may help with the pre-

vention of age related brain diseases; it contains folate which may assist with depression; it can increase energy levels; it may help to improve chronic inflammation; and even the US Food and Drug Administration approves health claims for it as a benefit to cardiovascular functioning. Even with such an abundance of positive health benefits, the soy beans in edamame could potentially have a negative effect on those with thyroid function problems. So for concerns or questions of its potential personal effects, it is recommended that you contact your healthcare professional before eating it. Edamame, or edamame bean, is a preparation of immature soybeans in the pod, found in cuisines with origins from East Asia. The pods are boiled or steamed and served with salt. The edamame must be cooked because the soybeans can otherwise be poisonous. Edamame is usually prepared and added to soups, stews, salads and noodle dishes, or simply eaten as a snack. It is served in sushi bars and in many Chinese and Japanese restaurants and can be found in most large supermarkets in the US, typically in the frozen vegetable section. Most health food stores also carry it. It can be bought as shelled or in the pod, fresh or frozen. Although most commonly served in Asian restaurants, it is also served as an appetizer, or in salads, at many other types of eateries, both casual and fine dining.

Garlic Edamame Recipe This garlic edamame is a simple snack or side dish that’s perfect for any meal. - 1 bag frozen edamame - 3 cloves garlic - 2 tablespoons olive oil - coarse sea salt - low sodium soy sauce (+ wasabi, if you have it!) Boil the edamame as directed on package. Drain and set aside. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil. Crush the 3 cloves of garlic, but leave them in 1 piece. Toss them into the skillet with the edamame (in 2 batches) and saute until the outsides of the edamame are just browning. Serve in a large bowl with another bowl on the side for the edamame shells. Serve with low sodium soy sauce (regular works, but it’s pretty strong so you might want to water it down a bit) and add a little wasabi paste, to taste. ShopInRI 15 15 ShopInRI

MR. LEMON For over 40 years Mr. Lemon has been happily serving homemade frozen lemonade from a friendly, family-operated shop in a street corner in northwestern Providence. Offering heaping cups of lemonade much smoother, creamier and tastier than their completion, the Wanskuck business is truly a hidden gem in the capital city. While their frozen concoctions have been a staple in the lives of regulars for decades, Mr. Lemon is an unknown to some Rhode Islanders. On the corner of Hawkins and Appian Streets, siblings Joe, Janice and Colleen are continuing a tasty tradition founded by their parents, Joseph and Eileen. “What we use is a little love,” Joe said, explaining what separates Mr. Lemon from other lemonade specialists in the state. “That’s our secret ingredient. It’s good till the las sip.” Founded in 1974, the thirst-quenching summer destination has sold countless cups of lemonade to patrons over the years – primarily because the family cares more about pleasing customers than keeping track of cups. On a hot day, we’re so busy, we don’t even count,” Colleen said. “We just keep selling “em.” Any sunny summer afternoon brings an endless flow of regular customers who stop to visit the small lemonade shop. No matter their age or background, the family greets the familiar faces with a pleasant smile and a delicious drink. “Our customers are like family to us,” Janice said, “We’ve served generations and generations of people. It’s like 22 ShopInRI

Cheers, everybody knows each other.” “Even out of towners come back to Providence and they have to have Mr. Lemon!” Joe Said. Aside from friendly service and neighborly rapport, the incredible product served up at Mr. Lemon is a draw that earns fans from across the state. “Mr. Lemon has the best lemonade in the world hands down.” Providence’s Terry Smith, a frequent customer, said. “This is considered old-fashioned lemonade,” Joe said. “We make it the way it was years ago.” Flavors are constantly changing, but some of the regular favorites include lemon, vanilla, cherry, watermelon and tutti fruitti (a bold, flavorful blend of all available lemonades). For creative customers, all flavors in stock can always be mixed and matched in every imaginable way. In addition to the usual recipes, special flavors have included strawberry, orange, banana, mango, lime, grape, blueberry, raspberry, peach, pina colada, root beer and pistachio. For news on which tantalizing flavors are available at any given time, find the business Facebook page and check their latest update. Mr. Lemon is located at 32 Hawkins St. in Providence. For more information, visit the business’s Facebook page or stop by any day through September. The family serves their frozen lemonade from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

LITTLE B’S BBQ “I love checking out BBQ restaurants whenever I travel.” explained D’Allesandro. One day, while searching online for a recipe for herself, her curiosity led her to a woman named Tootsie Tomanetz. Tomanetz is a legendary BBQ pit master from Texas who is in her 80s. D’Allesandro practiced the techniques of mopping the meat and making sure it wasn’t dry, and smoking it just right. Now people are lining up where ever Little Ben’s BBQ truck is parked. By Jenn Lombari Summertime in Rhode Island has everyone excited and heading to the parks, various outdoor events, and festivals across the state. Our tiny state is no stranger to the big food truck trend. With everything from tacos to Korean food to vegan delights, Jessica D’Allesandro has taken a family business and a love for food and put it on the road… farm to truck style. Having grown up on a farm and understanding the importance of knowing where your food comes from and how it’s grown or raised, she wanted to offer that to food lovers across the state, and serve it fresh and hot out of her own food truck. Little B’s BBQ is named after her son, Ben. D’Allesandro purchased a brand new truck and had a custom smoker made in Tennessee to meet her needs. But why barbeque? Where did that inspiration come from? 26 ShopInRI

All of the meats are provided by her father, Frank Martinelli, of PV Farm in North Scituate. All of the meat is naturally raised. Even though it is a BBQ truck, there are vegetarian options available too. Savory collard greens, corn bread, beans, stews, tomato bisque; and everything is natural. The menu is loaded with options. Everything from brisket, pulled pork, sandwich platters and more. Everything, including the delicious cornbread and beans is made from scratch by D’Allesandro herself. Products from local businesses are used whenever possible. Products from Munroe Dairy are used in the food and cheese from Narragansett Creamery is used in the home made macaroni and cheese. “We try to use the best products Rhode Island has to offer.”

The Little Ben’s BBQ truck hit the road in September of 2017. Its permanent location is on Route 6 at Scituate Liquors (Last Stop Before Cape Cod) and is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. D’Allesandro says that it’s been a phenomenal experience and that people are really liking the idea of the organically raised meats and home style cooking from scratch. This year, they are planning on having a few picnic tables outside of the truck for people to enjoy their meals. Little B’s BBQ has been featured at the Winter Farmers Market in Pawtucket, The Arcade in Downtown Providence, and is looking forward to being involved in the food truck events at Roger Williams Park this year. Little B’s BBQ is also available for special occasions and can cater by tray or by truck. Some people like the idea of walking up to the truck and ordering their food, others have it prepared already and guests can serve themselves.

If you’d like to have a party catered, contact Jessica at 401-528-7557 Follow Little B’s BBQ on Facebook for updates, specials, and appearances.

The Right Time. IT’S 4 AM

and the cows need milking. Then it’s time for breakfast. Not for Alex LaPrise, but for the cows at EMMA Acres, her family’s dairy farm. One of the 4 remaining Rhody Fresh farms in the state. Cows and chores first, then rush to take care of her young daughter, and then off to work as Managing Director of Rhody Fresh Milk. A job she has prepared for her whole life. A real farmer’s daughter. These days are not easy for dairy farmers in Rhode Island and across America. Most of the family owned farms are being

(l)Alex LaPrise, Executive Director of Rhody Fresh with Victoria Oatley, Sales Executive (r)

squeezed out by corporate takeovers, land development and the US Government setting a price for milk which is usually below what it costs independent farmers to produce. But that is not enough to deter Rhody Fresh farmers from continuing to work the land. It is a testament to their passion and commitment since 2004 when these farms came together to form The Rhode Island Dairy Farm Cooperative, providing milk for products marketed as Rhody Fresh. The public has been very receptive to their efforts. Growing from initial food store placement, Rhody Fresh now provides milk, cheese, cream, butter, and apple cider to retailers, wholesalers, farm stands, schools and institutions. Buyers know they are supporting the neighboring dairy farmers as well as the local economy while protecting open space. It’s all good.

Now the dairy farmers are ready for a new challenge and some would argue it’s about time. Rhody Fresh feels it’s the right time. It’s time for ice cream. The right season. The right milk. The right flavors. The right anticipation of a new product that shows Rhody Fresh understands the market as well as they understand the rigors of dairy farming. “People are drinking less milk than in years past” admits Alex. “With the introduction of alternative beverage products using soy, almonds and rice, we are always looking to find other uses for our milk. And who doesn’t like ice cream? So we have decided to participate in a very competitive food category.”

Rhody Fresh Summer Scoop Kick-Off campaign includes a flavor naming contest and appearance at AG DAY 2018 at the RI State House.

The introduction of Rhody Fresh Ice Cream coincides with Rhode Island’s effort to strengthen the local food supply business. The State of Rhode Island has recently launched an initiative to build on traditions, strengths, and history of the state while encouraging innovation and supporting the regional goal of 50% of the food eaten in New England to be produced in the region by 2060*. Rhody Fresh is hoping the brand support continues for its ice cream. Of course it’s made with Rhody Fresh milk and cream with added all natural ingredients. Each of the 5 flavors contain 16% butterfat. It will be considered a premium product. The ice cream is currently in production and slated for a roll-out in mid June, Dairy Month. Rhody Fresh is partnering with Dave’s Marketplace with an exclusive placement for the summer months. Part of the pre-launch marketing efforts include a Summer Scoop contest promotion and participation at AG DAY, May 30 at the RI State House, sponsored by RI DEM. Rhody Fresh Ice Cream flavors will include Vanilla, Coffee, Chocolate, Black Raspberry Chip and Peanut Butter Cup.

Fighting Back Against Parkinson’s Disease with Peter Manfredo Sr., Dena Paolino, and Rock Steady Boxing in Your Corner It is both uncommon and refreshing to find two people who are dedicated and driven to share their knowledge, skills, and overall lifetime experiences to positively impact others. And that’s exactly what Peter Manfredo, Sr. and Dena Paolino are doing at Striking Beauties Boxing & Fitness Studios’ three locations. With Mr. Manfredo’s over 40 years of experience in the sport of boxing, along with his business partner and significant other Dena’s strong fitness foundation, they are utilizing their skills to encourage and help those afflicted with the debilitating condition of Parkinson’s disease to live a more functional life, both physically and mentally. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a degenerative movement disorder which can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech and sensory function. Symptoms generally develop slowly over years. The progression of symptoms is often a bit different from one person to another due to the diversity of the disease. People with PD may experience tremor, Bradykinesia, limb rigidity, and gait and balance problems. The program that Mr. Manfredo and Ms. Paolino became involved with about 2 years ago was given the clever and fitting name of Rock Steady and is the first boxing program of its kind in the country. It was first introduced in 2006 by former Indiana Marion County Prosecutor Scott C. Newman, who is living with Parkinson’s. Rock Steady developed as Newman began intense one-on-one boxing training just a few years after he was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s at the age of 40. In a short period of time, following the intense and high energy workouts, Newman noticed a dramatic improvement in his physical health, agility, and daily functioning. It became clear that his quality of life improved dramatically soon after starting to fight back against Parkinson’s disease. The motto of the Rock Steady program is simple, yet powerful-to empower people with Parkinson’s disease to “fight back.” And with Peter Manfredo, Sr.’s amazing history in the boxing arena, fighting back is what he does best. What first inspired Mr. Manfredo to become involved in helping those afflicted with Parkinsons Disease? 40 ShopInRI

“When Dena and I started our first Rock Steady Boxing Beauties & Beasts co-ed program in North Attleboro, we had one member. And we were so impressed by the first member-a gentleman who displayed strong determination and hard work. It touched me. Actually, it blew me away. I have been in the boxing business for over 40 years. I’ve worked with young men and women who want to become world champions in the ring. This was different. These members aren’t looking for a title fight. They’re living one every day. And their opponent is Parkinson’s disease.” - Peter Manfredo Sr.

Our RSB members simply want to live a normal life. That’s it. Their goal is to walk better, get up easier, not fall as often, speak louder, and meet others who are also living with this crippling disease. After working with this first gentleman, I felt as if I was finally using all my years and experience in boxing to profoundly impact those living complex medical lives.” He then added, “There’s a genuine mutual respect between us and our members. We are committed to them, to improving their liveseven in the smallest way, and they are just as committed to fighting back against PD! ”Mr. Manfredo especially wants readers to know that the RSB program gives him a feeling of accomplishment. He shares, “I have met some absolutely incredible people that I now consider my friends, even family!” Peter Manfredo, Sr. has an amazingly impressive backstory that qualifies him as more than capable when it comes to training the body and mind. According to Mr. Manfredo, he started participating in the sports of boxing and martial arts in 1976. After many successes in the arena, he became a well known name as a world champion fighter and trainer for hundreds of amateur and professional boxers and kickboxers. With hard work, dedication, and his natural talent for the sport, he created numerous champions, both national and regional amateurs, as well as many professionals over the past few decades. In addition, Mr. Manfredo has coached national and regional amateur teams and has worked with the best coaches and trainers from around the world. He and his fighters and have traveled and fought with great success in Europe, Canada, and throughout the United States. The best part about Mr. Manfredo’s story is that along with his girlfriend and business partner, Dena, they chose to take their talents and use them to tackle the debilitating disease of Parkinson’s. When asked what it is about boxing that helps PD patients, Mr. Manfredo responded, “Boxing has been identified as THE BEST workout for phys-

ical and mental fitness. Boxers work on their agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, hand-eye coordination, footwork, and overall strength to defend against and overcome opponents. It is from the typical non-contact boxing training drills that Rock Steady Boxing creates the PD program elements. It’s a combination of those physical aspects of training, incorporated with the mental health benefits that PD patients respond to-focus, fast thinking, concentration, anticipation of what’s coming next-learning to be quick on your feet, so to speak.” As far as medical evidence supporting the determination of Rock Steady Boxing (RSB), various studies in the 1980s and 1990s supported the notion that rigorous exercise, emphasizing gross motor movement, balance, core strength, and rhythm, could favorably impact range of motion, flexibility, posture, gait, and activities of daily living. More recent studies, most notably at Cleveland Clinic, focus on the concept of intense “forced” exercise, and have begun to suggest that certain kinds of exercise may be neuroprotective, i.e., actually slowing disease progression. Mr. Manfredo added, “Our clients attest, and academic institutions, such as the University of Indianapolis and Butler University are reporting and documenting the improved quality of life among our boxers. Discovery of a cure may be years away, but in the last seven years, there is evidence that progress is made in all stages of the disease by those participating in the RSB program.” Continue reading on next page ShopInRI 41

Mr. Manfredo explained, “Our classes are a balance of activities, each with a slightly different focus. We warm-up and stretch in the beginning. We get people moving, big arm swings and steps, get the blood flowing and muscles warmed up. Next, we may do some cardio - jumping jax, jog, brisk walk. And we BOX- of course, we BOX! Bag work, heavy bags, speed bags, double end bags. We work combinations on the heavy bag which is intense, while the speed and double end bags focus on hand eye coordination, reaction time, and speed. We include weight training to increase strength. We include a lot of balance and gait exercises, i.e., balance beams, straight lines, bean bags on the head, ladder drills, obstacle course, uneven platforms, etc. We incorporate a lot of footwork to assist with sudden everyday movements. We also include games or activities that improve manual dexterity, such as puzzles and building blocks. And we always have FUN!!! Whether we are playing word search games or Twister, maybe even indoor basketball or soccer, whatever it is, we have a great time! And MOST importantly, the social aspect helps our members enormously. Whether they are embarrassed to be out, or afraid of the unknown, the classes with others that are inflicted with PD give them confidence, information sharing, and new friends! Rock Steady encourages the classes to be designed for Levels. We conduct an assessment. Those with early onset and minimal symptoms are Level 1, while Level 4 might include walkers/wheelchairs, those less mobile. But the beauty of the class is that we work individually with everyone and we can always modify the exercise for everyone’s ability.” When asked about their program helping those with other conditions, Mr. Manfredo explained that it is not specifically designed for conditions other than PD, but he went on to stress, “The program is fantastic for the entire older population. In fact, Dena teaches 2x a month at an assisted living facility. The members don’t have PD, but similar workout and the exercises are just as beneficial to them.” He then added, “Dena and I are actually discussing the format now for a new class we want to start for all people 60 and over. We sincerely hope to expose more people to the training involved in the sport of boxing. People get intimidated by boxing. They’re afraid to walk into a boxing gym. We want them to understand first and foremost that there is NO CONTACT involved. The exercise regiment incorporates all aspects of boxing intensity, footwork, balance, quick thinking, and hand eye coordination. These are the SAME issues that older people and people with Parkinson’s need to improve.” When asked about the staff for the Rock Steady Boxing Program, Mr. Manfredo stated, “Dena is a certified RSB trainer, while I am an experienced athlete, former pro boxer, world champion kickboxer, and 3rd degree Black Belt. I know how the body 42 ShopInRI

works, how to stretch and strengthen. I understand balance and focus and hand-eye coordination because it’s all part of a regular boxing workout. And now that I have run the classes with Dena for 2 years, I am educated in the disease and how to best help those inflicted.” When asked if members have provided him and Dena any positive feedback, Mr. Manfredo exclaimed, “Oh yes!! Our members tell us all the time how they have better balance, coordination, movement, are less stiff, and feel stronger. And again, most importantly, the social aspects gets them outside, interacting with others that are experiencing the same or similar symptoms. This is an enormous part of the program because many people want to shut down once they have been diagnosed. The RSB program says Hell NO! Get up, get in here, meet some friends, and move that body!! We have members in their late 80s! There’s no age limit and no physical abilities required. We adapt the workouts around them. As long as their doctor gives them the signed consent, they are good to go!!” Striking Beauties has 3 gyms, so there are 3 Rock Steady affiliate locations - North Attleboro and Taunton, MA, and Cranston, RI. Mr. Manfredo explained, “We like to keep our class size small so that we can interact closer, and it is more one on one and personal. All together we have 20-30 members, but we never have more than 10 in a class. Once we do, we add another class to the schedule.” At Striking Beauties, both all female classes and co-ed classes are offered. Ms. Paolino teaches the all female classes and the co-ed classes are taught by Mr. Manfredo. It’s obvious that Rock Steady Boxing improves the quality of lives for people battling PD through non-contact, boxing inspired fitness training. What I can say about Peter Manfredo, Sr. and Dena Paolino is that I would feel extremely fortunate and trusting to have them in my corner should I or any of my family or friends were facing PD or any condition that could be helped by Rock Steady Boxing or any other of their fitness programs. For additional information, Peter Manfredo, Sr. can be reached at 401-641-6973 and Dena Paolino is available at 617-201-1868.

By: Stacie Venagro How well are 2017 World Miss Fitness America Pro you taking care of yourself? I don’t mean just brushing and flossing your teeth or drinking enough water everyday. While these things are very important for maintaining our health, we need to ask ourselves some questions. Am I taking care of my mind? Am I taking some time out each day to express gratitude for what I have? What about mediation? Or how about simply just having a few quiet moments throughout the day to help recenter yourself? Do you think about your body in a negative way and tell yourself you need to make better choices because you are not feeling well? How about choosing to eat healthy and exercise because you love your body the way it is here and now? Look at yourself in the mirror and start pointing out the good about your body, and express how thankful you are to be able to get up and move about each day. Your body has done so many wonderful things throughout your life, make the choice to become stronger to see what limits you can push it to, not because you hate it, but because you appreciate it. Giving is one of the greatest pleasures in life. Maybe you take care of children, a spouse, family members, friends, patients, or even students. Whatever it is you do, giving requires time and energy. How do you recharge and give back to yourself? You cannot give from an empty well, so what makes you think that you can do everything without taking care of you? Exercise is a proven stress reducer. Take some time in your day to dedicate to movement. Walking is a great way to clear your mind and take care of your body. With the warmer weather here, take a walk around the neighborhood or explore some of the beautiful places here in New England. There are many trails with beautiful scenery for you to enjoy. Take the family with you if you like, or do it by yourself, whatever makes you happy! As I always tell my clients, fitness doesn’t have to be hours in the gym-about 20-30 minutes each day is an excellent start. Choose healthier foods because you love yourself and want to feel as good as possible. Remember, food is fuel, not punishment. Try not to think of all the foods you can’t eat and think about all of the delicious foods you can eat that are good for your body. Feeling guilty about indulging is counter productive. Enjoy a treat here and there and eat lots of nutritious meals. Take things day by day and try not to be too hard on yourself. Loving and caring for yourself is a process that begins with patience and practice. “To fall in love with yourself is the first secret to happiness.” (Robert Morley). NRI Therapeutic Massage Where Wellness Begins With Calmness

By Mark Berger Stress. We all have it from different sources and different degrees. It can become a contributing factor in serious health and wellness issues if the cycle is not broken. Many people know they have symptoms of stress and need to figure out ways of relieving them before it does any physical and/or emotional damage.

One way to address this problem is seeing Paula Kochanek, owner of NRI Therapeutic Massage, located at 10 Nate Whipple Highway, who has been helping people feel better for almost two decades. She works on getting to the root of a client’s issues and helping them to get to a place of well-being. “My practice has grown into a combination of relaxation and deep tissue work to help clients not just resolve pain issues, but leave feeling renewed mentally, physically and emotionally.” Kochanek stated. “Massages are often seen as relieving muscle pain, and that is true, but a large majority of the population suffers from ‘burnout pain.’ The average day for a young person to an elderly person is filled with a barrage of sensory input from computer to cell phone along with an array of social media distractions. Add to that mix work and family stress and the body just isn’t always able to cope.” Kochanek said there are many benefits from massage therapy. Research has shown receiving massage on a regular basis can help reduce blood pressure, increase

the immune system response, lower anxiety, reduce headaches, decrease carpel tunnel syndrome, help with chronic back and neck pain, increase range of motion, ease depression and reduce nausea for cancer patients among other things. She also said it is proving to help with the current opioid crisis. Kochanek said her passion for massage therapy came through a series of events from a job that was causing extreme stress and taking a toll on her own immune system. During a visit with her nutritionist, she encountered a poster depicting someone receiving a massage. Deciding to research deeper into the benefits of massage, she made a life-changing career shift into the field of massage therapy. At the time, massage was not as accepted as it is now, but Kochanek has never regretted her decision. She feels privileged to touch people on a level that can be life changing for them as well. She has been involved with numerous events including Operation Stand Down, where veterans are assisted with basic human needs; Crisis Massage Team of RI for first responders: Phoenix Burn Society and The Oncology Program at St. Ann’s Hospital. She has been recognized for her efforts as well. For more details about her services, please contact NRI Therapeutic Massage at 401-744-5025 or visit www. amtamembers.com/pkochanek. ShopInRI 47

Make Something Beautiful

at Abundance Coastal Designs Mosaic Studio

“People come to the studio, relax, have a glass of wine, create a nice project, spend time with their friends or family, and have fun.” - Maria Grace Furtado By: Brian Lowney Maria Grace Furtado can’t remember a time when she wasn’t letting her imagination run wild and she wasn’t creating a colorful work of art. Since she was a small child, art, design and color have been a passion for the Bristol woman, whose Abundance Coastal Designs Mosaic Studio is attracting countless students from all parts of Southern New England who are eager to explore their creativity, have some fun, bring home a beautiful project, and perhaps develop a new hobby. “I’ve always liked to create things with my hands and I’ve always been fascinated by mosaics.” The talented artist and designer explains that she took a class about six years ago in Boston and was told by her instructor to bring a few favorite objects – in her case, a few star fish, shells and some bits of sea glass – to create a project. “People love coastal themes when they are designing mosaic projects,” she tells. Furtado recalls that following that first lesson, her interest in working with mosaics grew, and she started to work with glass, tile, beads, stones and other objects. She opened her first studio in 2016 at 190 High Street, Bristol, and later expanded her operation to create a new studio in the Byfield Building, the site of the former Byfield School, last year. The studio is located at 220 High School, Suite 207 (Second Floor), Bristol RI 02809. “I couldn’t find anything like my class, so I decided to open a studio and also sell my work,” Furtado adds. The artist says that while she’s enjoyed a varied career ranging from serving as a realtor to work in corporate market52 ShopInRI

ing to a stint as a candlemaker, she truly is having fun sharing her passion for mosaics and helping others to explore their creativity. Furtado, a self-published author who’s writing her second book, enjoys working on several projects simultaneously and wants her students to be relaxed and have a good time. “I am having fun,” the entrepreneur says, smiling. “I took a leap of faith and I am grateful for every single day.” The designer, a graduate of the former Our Lady of Fatima High School, Warren, offers classes for individuals and groups. The studio hosts Birthday and Bridal Parties, Family and Friends’ Night Out, Fundraisers, Team Building Events and other gatherings. Events can be held in the studio or off site.

The classes include all materials, a fun, three-hour session, snacks and beverages. Adult classes are BYOB. “People come to the studio, relax, have a glass of wine, create a nice project, spend time with their friends or family, and have fun.” She adds that she is especially popular with children and teens who are celebrating birthdays. Guests can create a special momento to commemorate the occasion as they enjoy the celebration. The classes include all materials, a fun, three-hour session, snacks and beverages. Adult classes are BYOB. Furtado says that depending on the event, guests might enjoy wine, coffee, tea, various snacks and a dessert. “I’ve had more than 500 students of all ages,” Furtado shares, adding that the budding artists range in age from age 6 to seniors who want to explore their creative talents and have some fun with family members and friends. “I show them all the basics,” she tells, adding that students learn how to design a project, and how to cut and glue the tile. Once a project is finished, the piece sets and is then grouted by Furtado and her mother Sara Furtado and allowed to dry. Sara, a retired English as a Second Language teacher in the Bristol schools, once taught in the same room where

the mosaic artist now houses her studio. After the piece is polished and a hook is installed, the project is packaged and then is ready for delivery. Instruction for the class costs $50 per person; $35 for children and youths ages 6-15. Special rates are available for groups of 12 guests or larger. Private mosaic parties for 5-30 guests are also available; the studio is open Thursday-Saturday, noon-6 p.m.; other days and evenings by appointment. Visitors are always welcome to visit when the studio is open. Furtado also creates mosaics by custom order and can design a project with a special color scheme or unique theme. “I want people to enjoy the pieces,” Furtado ends. “People give the mosaics as wedding gifts, anniversary presents, for birthdays and more. Some people make a mosaic as a gift, and return to design and create another gift for themselves.” For more information about Abundance Coastal Designs Mosaic Studios, call (401) 714-9102; visit their Facebook page; or visit their web site: www.abundancecoastaldesigns.com ShopInRI 53

Martha’s Vineyard Martha’s Vineyard, accessible by boat or plane, is an island located in the Atlantic Ocean about 8 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, MA. The island has long been a private getaway for the rich and famous and today its reputation as a favorite go to for prominent people looking to escape their norm is stronger than ever- thanks to frequent visitors, including distinguished political figures, movie stars, and other spectator gatherers. But despite the allstar summer lineup, a laid-back lifestyle is the main feel of the island. The primary draw rushing Vineyard visitors off the ferry is the chance to relax and enjoy a slower pace for a long, serene weekend. Along with the expensive summer cottages, and a pricey dining atmosphere at some areas of the island, there are plenty of low key towns like Vineyard Haven and Menemsha that are still mostly focused on the marine industry and offer a more casual experience. So swap the stilettos for comfy flat sandals, and do play it cool if you should spy some film stars in Edgartown, and be assured that you, too, deserve a slice of all that the Vineyard has to offer. One way of getting to Martha’s Vineyard is a short 90 minute ferry trip from Quonset, RI. Some visitors go with a detailed itinerary, while others may just “wing it.” No matter the case, a day trip or even better, a long weekend on the island, will no doubt leave you and your loved ones refreshed and filled with many awesome memories. Below are some highlights of what visitors may find as they travel to Martha’s Vineyard. There are over 200 restaurants on Martha’s Vineyard, ranging from coffee shops, to pizza places, to the much more expensive fine dining. The best part is that there are choices to please all palettes and wallets. Beaches on Martha’s Vineyard are a favorite destination ShopInRI 56 56 ShopInRI

and popular activity for visitors. Each one has its own special quality that will draw those whom are searching for what each beach has to offer. In its entirety, the Vineyard’s shorelines offer a little something for everyone. The beaches that have a protected, mild surf are located on the northern and eastern coasts of the island, while others with big crashing waves are located on the south side. Of all the places to spread a blanket in soft sand, many visitors agree that South Beach (also known as Katama Beach) is one of the best. Situated in Edgartown, South Beach stretches for 3 miles and offers a rumbling surf and rolling dunes. Although there is ample parking, most travelers love to bike from Edgartown on a path that leads straight to the beach. East Beach on the Wasque Reservation may be a bit of a hike and is on the eastern shore of Chappaquiddick from where the Chappy Ferry drops visitors off, so not many travelers make the trip. Keep in mind that because of its location, this stretch of sand is relatively unoccupied, offering more privacy and making it a great spot to observe the birds that make this area their home. The beaches that are geared toward kids include Lobsterville Beach and Joseph Sylvia State Beach, both of which offer warm, gentle waters ideal for new swimmers. For those seeking an area to catch a spectacular sunset, Menemsha Beach is the ideal spot. Sitting perfectly in Chilmark, Menemsha is popular for evening picnics and to marvel at the pink and purple sky as the sun sets with a bottle of wine and someone to share the experience. The summer sunsets at Menemsha Beach are arguably among the most notable in all of New England, but dusk isn’t the only time to visit the westernmost side of the

island. The Menemsha Hills provide sweeping views of the Vineyard landscape, where the nearby docks bustle with fishing boats unloading fresh catches. The best part is lobster and other seafood can be bought for a fraction of the cost you might expect in Edgartown. Grab a paper plate, open a bottle of wine, and relax on a part of the island that can oftentimes avoid the bustle of some other towns. Most beaches offer changing rooms and on-duty lifeguards from 9 am to 5 pm during the peak summer season. Some also charge for parking. Check with the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce for more information. One of Martha’s Vineyard’s most-visited tourist spots is the Aquinnah Cliffs- formerly known as Gay Head. Bus and bike tours envelop the paved roads during peak summer season, but the spectacular clay cliffs carved by glaciers millions of years ago are well worth the trek. Visitors can explore the lower beach paths to see the cliffs up close and stretch along the sands at Moshup Beach, or take the upper trails to the top of the cliffs to catch a glimpse of Gay Head Light and nearby Elizabeth Islands. Watch your step, however; the Aquinnah Cliffs are part of the island’s Wampanoag Reservation and under special environmental protections to deter erosion. Keep your eyes open for signs that specify areas that are off limits. To catch a glimpse of the history and living arrangements of the 19th century Methodists who first occupied the island, Oak Bluff Campground will provide that and more. The small cottages are brightly colored, evoking a fairytale feeling, where Mother Goose and friends may emerge from the rear of the homes to wish those passing by a magical day. Each has its own name and dainty décor, and at night the neighborhood lights up into an illuminated wonderland. Chappaquiddick may be best known as the site of one of the many Kennedy family tragedies, but in spite of the original negative draw, Chappaquiddick has long surpassed being tainted by a one time infamous political

calamity. The island has numerous strong surf, rugged beaches, 14 miles of sand vehicle and walking trails, as well as a 14 acre Japanese garden, Mytoi. The tiny island’s main draw is the Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge, the nesting area for a variety of New England shorebirds. Here you can take a naturalist-led, over-sand jeep tour provided by the Trustees of the Reservation. The reservation also offers Cape Poge Lighthouse, kayak, and seaside exploration tours everyday from Memorial Day through Columbus Day (mid-October). For its relatively small size (100 square miles), Martha’s Vineyard has quite a few lighthouses. Out of the five that are on the northern side of the island, visitors and travel experts suggest stopping at the Edgartown Lighthouse. Originally constructed for Crane Beach in Ipswich, Massachusetts, this 1800s-era lighthouse was relocated to the Vineyard in 1938. Besides its history, the lighthouse draws in travelers who wish to experience incredible views seen at the top of its spiral staircase with panoramic views of the harbor and neighboring Chappaquiddick Island. To entertain the kiddies, take a break from the vista views and oceans, and visit the historic Flying Horses Carousel. Established in 1876, it is the nation’s oldest platform carousel, and has been designated a national landmark by the US Department of the Interior. It originally operated at Coney Island, N.Y., until the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust brought it to the island in 1986, with the goal of saving it from dismantling. Another treat for the children is awaiting them at Alpaca Island. There are plenty of birds and fish on Martha’s Vineyard, but alpacas? At Island Alpaca, visitors can visit the herd and learn about the lives and breeding of these unique creatures. Here, both children and families will begin to understand the benefits llamas bring to the farming industry, and will even offer consultation to those thinking of raising a llama. Just don’t tell the youngsters you could actually go home with one. For detailed information about traveling to Martha’s Vineyard, visit www.mvol.com.

Sewing sees a rebirth in Cranston

Like cooking, another old skill is trending as children learn the fun of creating something with their own hands. By Andrew Allin

It seems miraculous today, but sewing was a skill universal to both men and women in America, going back centuries. Even well into the 1950s it was not uncommon for rural women in RI to make their childrens’ clothing themselves. The art form, though, is making a comeback. Like cooking, sewing saves money and accrues intense pride when you create with your hands. The internet abounds with sewing tutorials on YouTube, magazines, lessons, pattern books, social media, and project ideas. The craft is finding a new generation here in the Ocean State at Jerilyn’s Sewing School (https://www. facebook.com/jerilynssewingschool/) on East Street in Cranston, RI . It services all ages, but children are especially fond of discovering the joys of doing something all by yourself. Each week this summer, Mondays through Thursdays, from 9am to noon, the small studio will teem with youngsters attending sewing camps during school’s summer vacation. They’ll make everything from pillows to dresses to plush animals to beach items and back-to-school knapsacks. 64 ShopInRI

The school was founded nearly ten years ago by Jerilyn Perry, a cheerful, friendly accountant who loves to sew and was looking for something fun and interesting to do in her spare time. “I saw an ad in a sewing magazine that said: ‘If you like to sew and you like children, why not teach them to sew?’” The ad was for “Sew You Can” franchises, schools geared to showing children they can create the things they use everyday and have fun doing it. Jerilyn found it to be a perfect fit for her. “Teaching was able to fill my free time with something I really enjoy doing.” The school has a careful, well thought out curriculum which brings each child along without frustration or pricked fingers. First comes safety, then each part of the sewing machine. They practice sewing threadless stitch lines on paper, to learn needle control. Once they’re comfortable with running the machine with the foot pedal, they proceed to make a simple

but very useful item, a colorful drawstring bag, which incorporates all the basic skills. In creating the bag, they learn how to pin and cut fabric, thread the machines, measure and mark their cloth, then finally sew it all together. I tried my hand at it and managed to create my bag without sewing any fingers together. This means that anyone can definitely do this. Running the machine to join my pattern was the most fun, measuring my material - not as much. “Sewing’s the best part of a project!” confirms 13 year old Anna D., a student for two years, now. “You can see all the finished parts coming together. I feel accomplished, and I love to show them off!” Her favorite project was something she still uses: “My pajama pants. I wear them all the time!” Eighteen year old Caroline Cowart has been sewing for five years now. Her favorite sewing project was creating a 19th century wedding dress for a performance of Les Miserables. Finishing such a complex creation felt “gratifying and wonderful.” She loves the social fun

Every December for the last few years, students have made something for the community, like pillowcases or superhero capes that were donated to the children’s hospital. Last year, with all the hurricane devastation, students made toiletry bags, then filled them with donations for storm victims. Beginning this year, the school is now making something one night a month for those in need, like t-shirt dresses for poor girls in Haiti, or miniature clothes which are then donated with dolls to young children much like themselves but who live in homeless shelters.

taking group sewing classes and seeing her skills grow. ”I love being taught by Mrs. Jerilyn.” Kailey H., age eleven, has been a miniature seamstress for three years now. “I like going to sewing class because it’s really fun,” she says, “so many kids are nice to me.” She created a sewing bag for her sewing supplies. Making her own items is satisfying. “I get happy. It feels great.” Fatima F. is only ten, but she, too, has been learning the craft for over three years now. ”My favorite part of sewing class is making the projects,” she explains. “It feels nice! My best project I made was a duck robe for my toy zebra.”

Do ANIMALS SPEAK?

to let them know where she is, or to call them back to the nest. Although this may not be something that most people even notice, I love to offer education about nature because it may be that it is a lot smarter than people give it credit for.

By Susan Gazerro

I’ve always wondered if animals spoke to each other. What I found in my research is that animals do not have a true language, similar yet different than humans. Animals communicate with each other through sounds and gestures and this truly is their own language. Humans learn as they age and grow. Animals are born with natural instincts that are necessary for survival. Although they are not formed words we see and use in the human language, animals have a number of inborn qualities they use to signal their feelings and to communicate with each other. Think about a flock of geese as they are flying in a perfect V shape formation. Have you ever wondered how they developed that formation, or how they all knew to take off together, or how they all knew in which direction to follow? All birds have a different chirp. When you open your windows and hear birds chirping, it’s not anything you may think twice about, but the birds have reason and meaning for their chirping. They are speaking to each other. A mother bird will chirp, using a certain sound that only her babies will respond to and she may do this 74 ShopInRI

Every species has a purpose on this earth and every species speaks its own language. The truth seems to be that some animals can mimic the sounds of human speech, but only a tiny minority can talk meaningfully as humans do. Everyone has probably heard a parrot speak, but the less capable speaking animals are just as fascinating because they reveal how our own language skills originally evolved. They communicate without forming words and we as humans started speaking the same way so we can learn quite a bit from these non speaking animals. A good example is when a tsunami hit Asia several years ago. Before any meteorologist or human knew what was coming, the animals fled to higher ground-a natural instinct to survive. I am just so fascinated with nature and how all animals are born with a natural instinct to do what it takes to protect themselves. I believe humans take this for granted, but if you just stopped to admire the intelligence of this earth, there is so much to be seen, learned, and to be grateful for.

MOVIE REVIEW Bruce crash lands in the New York Sanctum where he meets Wong (Benedict Wong) and Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is quickly called to the scene, and everything starts to fall apart. Tony explains that while Bruce was gone, the Avengers had split and that Vision had gone off the radar. Suddenly, an ominous alien ship appears. They attempt to fight off Ebony Maw (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) and Cull Obsidian (Terry Notary). Strange and Iron Man, accompanied by Peter Parker aka Spiderman (Tom Holland), are stuck on the ship headed to a mysterious planet. Meanwhile, in deep space, the Guardians manage to pick up the Asgardian distress call. However, when they arrive, they are shocked to see the destruction left behind. But coincidentally, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) smashes onto their windshield and they bring him inside. He explains that Thanos is on his way to Earth to retrieve the other two stones. Gamora (Zoe Saldana) says that he must be also going to get the Reality Stone on Knowhere, so the team splits up. One group consisting of Gamora, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), and Mantis (Pom Klementieff ) goes to retrieve the Reality Stone, whereas Thor, Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel) head to Nidavellir to make Thor a new weapon.

Back on Earth, Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) are having trouble with the Mind Stone in his forehead. This leads to the two fighting off Proxima Midnight (Carrie Coon), and Corvus Glaive (Michael James). However, Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie), help the two, taking them to Wakanda to figure out how to remove the Mind Stone from Vision’s forehead without killing him. Soon after that, everything goes down the drain. Overall, I absolutely loved the movie. Everything about it made it the perfect story. There was just the right amount of romance, action, drama, emotion, and thrills to evenly balance everything out. When the opening credits started to play and there was no music, I knew that I was for sure in for a wild ride. I cried for a good ¾ of the movie - and when I say cry, I mean uncontrollably sobbed, while shaking in my seat, as mascara streamed down my face. However, there were also parts where I could not help but laugh out loud or cheer when something amazing happened. I eventually had to go see it a second time to fully re-immerse myself, as I was so emotional the first time, I missed many little plot points. Of course I had many theories in place before the movie and most of them came to fruition, no matter how sad they were. There were also many twists and turns later in the

movie that I did not expect at all. I would love to talk about them, but this is a spoiler-free review… However, I can still talk about the characters. And boy is there a long list of them: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Bruce Banner, Star-Lord, Black Widow, Spiderman, Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, Nebula, Gamora, Groot, Drax, Vision, Bucky, Wong, Mantis, Loki, Okoye, Rocket Racoon, Falcon, Black Panther, Vision, Shuri, War Machine, and even Pepper Potts. Wanda and Vision’s relationship in the movie is beautiful and I loved it when time was set aside for just the two of them and how the Infinity Stone in Vision’s forehead is affecting their life together. Doctor Strange and Tony Stark’s relationship is very funny, as it is comical to see two egotistical rich men with facial hair go toe to toe. And poor Peter is stuck in the middle, which is humorous as well. One character that deserves the most recognition, however, is Thor. From what we know, Infinity War races out of the gate only moments after Thor: Ragnarok ends. This means that fresh off losing his father, his sister, his home, his hammer, and his eye, Thor is rather quickly thrown into the big frying pan that is IW. I really did feel bad for him. I give Avengers: Infinity War a 6 out of 6 diamonds. Rated PG-13 for blood, violence, and action.

Rhode Island History

Yes, Rhode Island’s the smallest state in the U.S. But its population density - an estimated 1,050,292 people is second only to New Jersey. America’s first Baptist church was founded by Roger Williams in Providence in 1638—and it’s still there today. Touro Synagogue in Newport is America’s oldest synagogue, dating back to 1763. 8. The state shell, the Northern quahog, isn’t just a long-celebrated food. The Wampanoag nation used the shells to make wampum, first worn as jewelry and then traded as stringed currency. The Redwood Library and Athenaeum in Newport has been checking out books since 1750, making it the oldest U.S. lending library. Rhode Island is one of the few states that does not house its governor in an official residence. (The others are California, Arizona, and Massachusetts.) Governor Ambrose Burnside was a Union Army general during the Civil War, the first president of the National Rifle Association, and the inventor of … sideburns. The trend sparked by his unique facial hair was originally called “burnsides,” until someone decided that reversing the name better defined the style. When it downgraded street solicitation from a felony to a misdemeanor in 1980, a legal loophole accidentally legalized indoor prostitution. The law wasn’t amended until 2009. If a Federal Pell Grant helped you pay for college, you can thank Rhode Island’s longest-serving senator, Claiborne Pell. In 1973, he was the primary sponsor of what was then called the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant. He also helped create the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities

Politics, Prominence & Power Leads to an American Tragedy on Chappaquiddick Island By Julia Romano

It has often been referred to as a classic American tragedy. But is that only because it involves the infamous Kennedy family? Similar to many other politically charged situations, this tragedy appears to have many critical unanswered questions that would cause even the most unsuspicious to have lingering doubts about what really happened on the evening of July 18, 1969, when a young woman was a passenger in an Oldsmobile driven by Senator Ted Kennedy, which veered off of a wooden bridge into the bottom of a tide-swept pond. Kennedy escaped the submerged car, but his passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, did not. The information provided by Senator Kennedy and most of his clan surrounding this fatal incident appears to be choppy, at best, and filled with inconsistencies and half truths that ultimately resulted in a mere slap on the wrist for the senator who was only charged with leaving the scene of an accident after the untimely death of a young, ambitious woman. The story is said to go something like this. On a warm summer June evening, Senator Kennedy and his cousin Joe Gargan hosted a cookout and reunion party at a rented cottage on Chappaquiddick Island, an affluent island near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The party was planned to express gratitude to Ms. Kopechne and five other women who were veterans of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign. Ms. Kopechne was a teacher, secretary, and political campaign specialist who engrossed herself in helping the Kennedy clan attain their future political goals. By all accounts, Ms. Kopechne was a trustworthy, giving, dependable, loyal, and driven young woman who was well on her way to a successful future. According to the senator, at about 11:00 pm, he and Ms. Kopechne left the cookout to head out to the ferry which would transport each of them to their respective Edgartown lodgings. While driving down the main roadway, Kennedy supposedly took a sharp turn onto the unpaved 86 ShopInRI

Dike Road, drove for a short distance, and then missed the ramp to a narrow wooden bridge and plunged into Poucha Pond. Kennedy, who was a 37 year old married man with three children and another on the way, claimed the Dike Road excursion was a wrong turn. However, both he and Kopechne had previously driven down the same road, which led to a secluded ocean beach just beyond the bridge. Even more interesting is that Kopechne had left both her purse and room key at the cookout which raises more unanswered questions. Kennedy claimed that once he pulled himself from the submerged car, he then dove into the pond in an attempt to save Kopechne from the sunken car. Unable to do so, he returned to the cottage. This is when the authorities should have been summoned, but they were not. Instead, Kennedy opted to enlist Gargan and another friend in a second attempt to save Kopechne- all unsuccessful. Were the authorities called at this point? Nope! Here is where things really became questionable. The trio went to the ferry slip, where Kennedy dove into the water and swam back to Edgartown, about a mile away. He returned to his room at the Shiretown Inn, changed his clothes, and at 2:25 a.m. came out of his room where he had a conversation with the innkeeper, Russell Peachey. He told Peachey that he been awakened by noise next door and asked what time it was. He then returned to his room. What was Kennedy thinking? Was he trying to establish an alibi?

In Leo Damore’s Senatorial Privilege–the Chappaquiddick Cover-up (1988), the author recounts an interview with Joe Gargan in which Gargan, in an attempt to shed some light on an unbelievable tale, claimed that Kennedy had plotted to make it appear that Kopechne was the driver and sole occupant of the automobile. Whatever Kennedy’s intentions, on the morning of July 19 he went back to Chappaquiddick Island and then returned to Edgartown. At 9:45 am, 10 hours after driving off Dike Road bridge and seemingly with no other choice, Kennedy reported the accident to Edgartown Police Chief Dominick Arena and admitted that he was the driver. Initially, Ms. Kopechne’s family, although in a state of shock and sadness, seemed to believe the story about what happened to cause the death of their beloved only child. The Kopechne family was of modest means and likely enamored with the Kennedy family, as they have often been referred to as America’s royalty. Mr. Kopechne was an insurance salesman and Mrs. Kopechne, a homemaker. They were trusting of Ted Kennedy and his family, but as time passed, the Kopechne family was not receiving what they, like so many others, felt was the complete picture of exactly what happened at the end of their daughter’s life and understandably wanted the whole truth. Unfortunately, the whole truth would never be received from Kennedy’s story. A week after Ms. Kopechne’s death, Kennedy pleaded

guilty to leaving the accident scene; he received a twomonth suspended jail sentence. Then he addressed the nation. According to Joe Gargan, Kennedy asking him to write him a resignation speech. But Ted delivers a different speech in which he admits to bad judgment and explains he was overcome by grief, fear, doubt, exhaustion, panic, confusion, and shock. He did not resign, despite Gargan’s strong wishes. A year later, when Kennedy ran for re-election, he won with 62% of the vote. When he did run for president in 1980, he failed to get the Democratic nomination because he couldn’t coherently respond to a TV interview question about why he wanted to be president. He went on to become the long-serving and accomplished “lion of the Senate,” who was widely mourned across party lines when he died of brain cancer in 2009 at the age of 77. The tragedy within this story is that there was a death of young woman who in no way deserved or caused her own demise, yet Senator Kennedy was never held accountable when it seems that he was at the very least, negligent, and potentially partially responsible. And the cover up? That is the worst part of all of this craziness. Even if it was an honest accident, an obvious cover up by Kennedy automatically brings into question everything Kennedy has reported. Was power, control, wealth, prominence, politics, and the need to protect himself more important to Kennedy than respecting a young woman’s life?
