2. Exaggerated with Asparagus andSleeves Brown Butter Spring & Summer By: Chef Adam Baffoni Statement sleeves hit the fashion world by 2017 Fashion Trends storm this season and will continue to do so. By: Sarah Wessel & Rosanna M. Ortiz With this spring being a little chillier than expected, we are ready to shed the layers and dive into summer. We’ve seen brilliant spring trends on the runway, and we’re ready to transition them over into summer. From showing a little more shoulder, to having sheer overlays; here are some of the 2017 spring/summer trends that have already starting getting exposure and will continue to thrive this summer!

Editor Anthony Manzo

Ingredients

The statement sleeves vary in style. They can bell or poof and cinch at the wrist, flare at the elbow, or have frills upon frills! Theses exaggerated sleeves add movement and drama to any outfit. These tops are also a great transition piece that can be worn from the day into the night!

4. Feminine Frills Frills have come and gone throughout the past years, but for this spring/summer, they are here to stay. The frill details add a romantic feel to the garment and soften the look quite a bit, while also providing movement. Beach That Washed Away in 1984 Suddenly Returns

The sea giveth, and the sea taketh away and, it turns out, giveth again. A beach on a remote Irish island whose sand washed away in 1984 storms has formed once again. After what the Guardian calls a “freak tide” in mid-April, sand, hundreds of tons of it, was returned to Dooagh village on Achill Island. “The wind was coming from the north,” Achill Tourism head Sean Molloy explains. “It was steady and must have transported sand in from elsewhere.” A local bar and restaurant owner told the Telegraph that small amounts of sand would return each spring, but it was never enough to restore the rocky shore to its former glory, a beach that now stretches about 1,000 feet. It’s not the first time the beach has performed a vanishing act. According to records, it previously washed away in the 1890s but was back by 1927, at which point a pier was built—and after which some luminaries, including novelist Graham Greene and a young Angela Lansbury, visited, reports the Irish Times. Ireland’s beaches will be inspected next year, reports the Irish Post, and Molloy hopes the beach will still be there and gain blueflag status. It could be a boon for Dooagh village, which one local explains has seen three hotels and the local shop close their doors in the beach’s absence. (Closer to home, Miami Beach’s sand comes from elsewhere, and that’s a problem.)

Deadhead Sells Jerry Garcia’s ‘Wolf ’ for $1.9M

3 A guitar that Jerry Garcia played everywhere from San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom to Egypt’s Great Pyramids fetched over $1.9 million at an auction Wednesday night. The Grateful Dead frontman’s guitar named Wolf—was sold at the Brooklyn Bowl, a bowling alley, restaurant, and music venue.

The proceeds are earmarked for the Southern Poverty Law Center, based in Montgomery, Ala. The guitar was owned by devoted Deadhead Daniel Pritzker, a philanthropist, musician, and film director who bought the instrument in 2002 for $790,000, the AP reports.“I’ve been a fan of The Dead since I was a kid, and playing this iconic guitar over the past 15 years has been a privilege,” says Pritzker. “But the time is right for Wolf to do some good.” SPLC President

The instrument bears a devilish looking, cartoon-like image of a wolf ’s face. The 1977 film The Grateful Dead Movie was directed by Garcia and features extensive footage of the instrument. earned a degree in Culinary Arts and Food Service Management. After college, the talented young woman taught preschool for a while, but always had a burning passion for creating fancy desserts and sweet confections. Sparkman admits that while she doesn’t have a sweet tooth and seldom eats dessert, she always enjoyed baking for family and friends and having fun in the kitchen. “I was getting curious about baking and making cakes,” the chef recalls, adding she started collecting cookbooks and recipes for desserts. She started a small business at home, and two years later, decided it was time to expand. “I knew that I had this gift and it was time to get serious,” Sparkman continues.

Bake. Eat. Love.

If Crystal Sparkman could have three wishes, what would she desire? Would the young woman want a fancy car, or opt for a sparkling diamond? How about an extravagant vacation to an exotic isle? Guess again. Sparkman says she has simple tastes and just 12 ShopInRI

wants to “bake, eat and love” – hence the name of the delightful bakery named for the shop she opened more than four years ago in the Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket. “I was in the restaurant business for many years,” begins Sparkman, a 2008 graduate of Johnson and Wales University where she

In 2013, the busy entrepreneur converted a former mill building into a small, vibrant bakery that sells delicious cupcakes, desserts and confections. “I wanted to bring something new that they didn’t have here,” she shares. “I was an artisan looking for a space.” Sparkman quickly developed a strong client base, and in no time, she had more than 300 clients, all eager to enjoy her luscious desserts. The business and media savvy young entrepreneur created a web site and a Facebook page and continues to enjoy a strong social media presence. “I knew that social media was going to be my best seller,” Sparkman acknowledges, adding that she also receives many referrals by word-of-mouth. According to the talented chef, some of her most popular desserts include a salted caramel cupcake and large cake drizzled with caramel and sprinkled with

touches of sea salt. Another showstopper is the chocolate Grand Marnier cake, a full-sized dessert that’s perfect for entertaining and special birthday celebrations. Sparkman says that she had a request to bake the lavish dessert a few years ago, and the dessert turned out so well that she decided to add the scrumptious cake to the regular menu. Sparkman reveals that dessert aficionados of all ages also enjoy cake pops, a lavish chocolate confection that tastes like a rich truffle. The baking expert reveals that one of the most popular treats sold at “Bake, Eat, Love” is the sweet potato pie, a velvety smooth dessert made with love from her mother’s own recipe. “I’m the only one that my mother has taught how to make it,” Sparkman shares, adding that her mother bakes the delicious pie for friends and co-workers. “It is a comfort food,” the chef continues. “I like it when I go home to Philadelphia and enjoy it when my mother bakes it. It’s better than the turkey at Thanksgiving.” Sparkman says that one of the bakery’s most popular summer desserts is the raspberry-lemon pound cake. “That’s a summer favorite,” she says. “It’s very light and airy. It’s become so popular that it’s now available year-round.” According to Sparkman, the bakery also offers a large selection of wedding cakes and edible favors.

“My goal is to focus on the client and the uniqueness of each wedding,” Sparkman emphasizes. She adds that she’s traveled as far as Philadelphia and throughout Southern New England to deliver beautiful wedding cakes. “If a client wants it, we will provide it,” she continues. “We put a lot of love into our confections. I am a strong believer in doing something that you love.” For several years, Sparkman and her staff at “Bake, Eat, Love” have participated in Rhode Island Food Fights, a competition that showcases the very best in local food. The bakery recently captured its 5th award, winning a first prize in a hard-fought cupcake contest. “It’s the highlight of my year,” the baker tells, adding that she enjoys meeting cupcake lovers of all ages and watching their reaction to her delicious treats. Mexican Chicken Wings

“MEXICAN CHICKEN WINGS I've got dozens of chicken wing recipes, but even so, sometimes I just want something different. I decided to take my favorite taco seasonings recipe and adapt it to chicken wings. Caramba! The result was one of the tastiest wings I've made in a long time! This is such an easy and delicious recipe to make, even for a crowd. At your next party, just double or triple the recipe, as needed.

Ingredients:

Directions:

2 teaspoons salt

Pre-heat the oven to 375.

2 teaspoons cumin 2 teaspoons oregano 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon granulated onion 1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic 1/2 teaspoon pepper avocado oil 4-5 lbs. chicken wings

Combine the salt, cumin, oregano, paprika, onion, garlic, and pepper in a bowl. Mix well. Cover a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spread the wings out on the sheet. Sprinkle the wings with the avocado oil and rub the oil all over the wings. This will help the wings cook evenly, and it'll also help the seasonings stick to the wings. Turn the wings bottom-side-up and sprinkle with the seasoning mix. Flip the wings over and sprinkle them again, coating them evenly. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for about 45 minutes. Seared Sea Scallops

with Asparagus and Brown Butter By: Chef Adam Baffoni

Ingredients 4 sea scallops, abductor muscles removed 1 lb. asparagus, cut into 1-inch sections 3 tbsp. unsalted butter Salt and pepper, as needed Oil, for cooking Scallops can be a pretty intimidating ingredient, mostly because of their price. No one wants to buy scallops at $17 per pound and overcook them, wasting all that money, but the truth is they’re one of the easiest proteins to cook perfectly and they’re so rich and sweet that you only need two or three per person. They’re well worth the money. There are a few tricks to cooking scallops – the first is the type of pan you use. If you have a cast iron pan, this is the time to use it, but if not, just make sure you use a skillet with a heavy, thick bottom. In order to get a scallop to sear well, you want your pan to be heavy because it will hold its temperature very efficiently and won’t cool down when you put the cold scallop on the surface. No matter how heavy your pan is, it will not hold its heat if you overcrowd it, so stick to cooking four or five scallops at a time. The next trick is pretty simple: don’t overcook them. When cooking scallops, most people will think that they are done cooking, but will instead leave them on for another few minutes just to make sure they aren’t raw. That’s the wrong move. Scallops shouldn’t be totally cooked in the center because by the time they are, they will be chewy and overcooked. The final trick to cooking a perfect scallop is to pat them dry with a paper towel before putting them in the pan. If scallops have a lot of moisture on the surface, they will never develop a golden crust like they should. As long as you follow those simple rules, this is one of the easiest recipes you’ll make this summer. Directions Bring a medium saucepan of well-salted water to a boil. Blanch the asparagus in the boiling water for one or two minutes, then drain and shock in ice water to avoid overcooking. Add the butter to a nonstick pan and cook over medium heat until it begins to brown and smell nutty. Add the asparagus to the butter and cook until it develops some browning. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Bring a heavy-bottomed skillet to very high heat and add a small amount of cooking oil. Pat the scallops dry and season them with salt. Place the scallops in the hot pan and leave them for about 2 minutes, until they develop a nice golden crust. Flip them and cook for 90 more seconds. Arrange the asparagus on four plates, top each with a scallop and finish by drizzling a little of the brown butter leftover from the asparagus pan. ShopInRI 19

Lil Rhody Clams Rhode Island is known for its food, and nothing is more Rhode Island than the quahog, especially in the summer months. It is part of a unique local food culture that has placed the Ocean State on the ‘foodie’ map. Rhode Island’s abundant and diverse commercial fisheries are also feeding people around the world.

Stuffed quahogs, or stuffies, are popular elsewhere in New England, but only in Rhode Island are there annual Quahog festivals (in Warren) and a fictional town called Quahog in a popular American TV show (Family Guy). Quahogs, of course, are the large hard-shelled clams native to this area, the ones used in the chowders and clam cakes. “Quahog” comes from the Narragansett Indian name “poquaûhock”; the Narragansett Indians cultivated the clams for food and ornaments, and introduced them to the area’s first European settlers. For this dish, the clam meat gets chopped up and mixed with bread crumbs, herbs, and finely diced onion, bell pepper, and celery. The whole savory mess is then baked in a clam shell—and devoured across the region.

Fun Facts about Clams Everyone loves clams. A little butter, a little candlelight, yum! But, have you ever wondered about the secret life of this tasty mollusk? Here are fun facts you probably never knew about the lowly clam.

Who should be on a gluten-free diet? Individuals who have celiac disease require a gluten-free diet for health reasons. Ingestion of gluten in these individuals causes an adverse reaction which damages intestinal cells and can lead to serious health problems. People who experience an adverse reaction to gluten but who do not have celiac disease may have non-celiac gluten sensitivity (also called “gluten sensitivity”). In this condition the problems caused by gluten are not thought to be as extensive as in celiac disease, but for both conditions the treatment is a gluten-free diet.

What is a gluten-free diet? Gluten refers to the proteins found in wheat, rye and barley which cause an adverse reaction in people with glutenrelated disorders. On a gluten-free diet, these grains and any foods or ingredients derived from them must be removed from the diet. This includes the obvious breads, pastas and baked goods made with glutencontaining flours, but may also include less obvious foods such as sauces, salad dressings, soups and other processed foods, since these can contain small amounts of ingredients derived from gluten-containing grains. (Oats are naturally gluten-free, but are often contaminated with wheat 30 ShopInRI

in growing and/or processing, so only oats which are certified gluten-free are acceptable on a gluten-free diet.) Common misconceptions about the gluten-free diet The gluten-free diet is sometimes promoted as a way to lose weight, or as a “healthier” diet for the general population. These claims are unfounded. The gluten-free diet is healthier for people with gluten-related disorders (celiac disease or gluten sensitivity), but there is no evidence that it is beneficial for people who do not have these conditions. The presence or absence of gluten alone is not related to diet quality. What’s important is the overall food choices made within the diet, whether it’s gluten-free or not. If an individual whose diet contains large amounts of breads, pastas and

cookies (especially those made from refined flours) switches to a gluten-free diet which eliminates these foods while increasing fruits, vegetables and other healthful gluten-free foods, the resulting diet would likely be healthier. On the other hand, this same person could easily substitute gluten-free breads, pastas and cookies into the diet, without increasing intake of healthful gluten-free foods like vegetables and fruits. In this case a person may actually experience a reduction in diet quality, since many gluten-free processed foods are lower in fiber, vitamins and minerals than their gluten-containing counterparts. This type of gluten-free diet may be higher in calories, since many processed glutenfree foods contain higher levels of fat and/or sugar to compensate for flavor and texture changes which result from the removal of gluten. Any diet that is higher in calories is likely to promote weight gain, not weight loss.

If all of these conditions have been ruled out and the patient responds positively to a gluten-free diet, then the diagnosis of non-celiac gluten sensitivity may be made.

How many people have gluten-related disorders?

What symptoms could indicate the need for a gluten-free diet? Symptoms of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are similar and may include: recurring abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea/ constipation, tingling/numbness in hands and feet, chronic fatigue, joint pain, unexplained infertility and low bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis). There are hundreds of potential symptoms, many of which are also symptoms of other conditions. What to do if you think gluten may be causing your symptoms Consult with your personal physician/health care provider before giving up gluten. This is very important because the standard blood testing done as a first step to diagnosing these conditions is not meaningful unless gluten is being consumed for a significant period of time before testing. It is also important to consult with your healthcare provider in order to evaluate other possible causes of symptoms.

It’s estimated that in the US, approximately 1 in 100 people have celiac disease. The prevalence of non-celiac gluten sensitivity is not established but may be significantly higher. Only about 17% of people with celiac disease have been diagnosed. This article has been assessed and approved by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. Below you will find several websites where gluten free products can be found and purchased in Rhode Island. https://www.findmeglutenfree.com https://www.wholefoodsmarket.com https://www.eastsidemarket.com https://glutenfreetravelsite.com/Rhode-Island/gluten-free

By Julia Romano

How are celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity diagnosed? The first step to testing for both conditions is a panel of blood tests looking for an antibody response to gluten. If these tests are positive, the next step is an endoscopy. If the endoscopy shows the intestinal cell damage characteristic of celiac disease, this is considered the gold standard of celiac disease diagnosis. There is currently no specific diagnostic test for nonceliac gluten sensitivity; instead, it is a “rule out diagnosis. Consequently, the celiac disease testing described above would be done. In addition, wheat allergy and other potential causes of symptoms should be ruled out. ShopInRI 31

Customers can get fresh produce at the Farmers’ Market and high quality plants and planting material at the Garden Center. Families can also visit the ice cream shoppe, bakery, and playground. The farm grows over 160 varieties of vegetables, 75 varieties of hanging plants, and over 90 varieties of specialty products. Barden Family Orchard John Barden and Hazel Dean founded Barden Family Orchard in 1931. They planted some of the first apple trees along the eastern edge of the orchard. These trees are the oldest trees on the farm, and are evidence to John Barden’s keen interest in the science of apple growing. The farm is filled with a mixture of Cortland, Macintosh, and Macoun apple trees. John was excited to experiment with new apple varieties and enjoyed growing fruit into his early 80s. Like his grandfather, Gilbert also has a strong interest in horticulture, and loves to farm. In the 1980s, he and his grandfather began to replant much of the orchard to both semi dwarf apple trees as well as peaches. He also began to plant pumpkins and winter squash for more diversity. This was an exciting change for the customers. Not only could they pick apples and peaches, but they could also pick a pumpkin for Halloween. Barden Family Orchard now grows many varieties of apples, pumpkins, winter squash, peaches, and sweet corn, and has added raspberries, tomatoes, summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers and eggplant, and blueberries, and more.

Appleand Orchards Appleland Orchards is a small, but a busy place that has been part of the local farming community since the 1970s. Named “Best Apple Cider in New England” by Yankee Magazine, Appleland Orchards is both a local favorite and the winner of many regional taste tests. The small family farm, run by Joseph and Mary Lou D’Andrea, sells fresh-picked apples, pears, and peaches and homemade specialties. They press cider, bake pies and cakes, preserve jams and jellies, and decorate enormous chocolate-covered apples, which fly off the shelves during the holiday season. They also age their award-winning cider to produce apple cider vinegar and apple wine. Appleland Orchard’s amazing fruit, cider, and pies, are available at their farm stand in Greenville, which is open from during the peak season from August to December then again from March to May with spring annuals and perennials, cider, honey, maple syrup, baked goods, preserves, and apples from storage available. They are also a part of Farm Fresh’s Market Mobile program; so look for them on the menu at your favorite local restaurants!

A Fashionably Amazing Wine Shop

Gasbarro’s Wines on Atwells Avenue is not just a shop; it’s an institution Q & A with owner Mark Gasbarro By Rosanna M. Ortiz Are you a Rhode Island native?

Oh yes! I was born and raised in Providence, RI and attended Classical High School, and then went on to get my accounting degree from Providence College. What made you get in to the wine business?

I am the 4th generation of Gasbarro’s, believe it or not! My interest came from observing my father. Lombard Gasbarro, the 3rd generation of Gasbarro;s who was at the time an attorney, owned Gasbarro’s Wines on Atwells Avenue. The business has been in existence since 1898. My greatgrandfather, Antonio Gasbarro, had the shop during prohibition; he did still sell and had a private label soda, barley malt and hops, and also sold beer. At that time, it was legal to create small consumptions to sell, so that’s how he got by. Being a part of this history and lineage has been an honor. 38 ShopInRI

What are the best parts about being on Federal Hill in Providence?

The best parts are the variety of businesses on this street, the amazing restaurants, not to mention the history. There was a great culture in this neighborhood growing up, and there are still traditions that people believe in. There are people in this neighborhood I have known for decades and have grown up with. We are a community of culture and are proud of that culture and what it represents. Now, let’s get to the Wine! What is your favorite kind of wine?

Definitely red wine. Don’t get me wrong, there are some terrific white wines that are outstanding, and now that summer is around the corner, rosés are gaining a lot of traction; but I am a red guy. I try not to have the same wine in one calendar year because I need to broaden my

horizons for my profession. Italian red wine is my go-to, but there are some spectacular California and Washington State reds. What is the best bottle of wine you ever consumed?

It was most definitely the 1928 Chateau La Tour Bordeaux. I enjoyed this in 2002 with my father, before he passed away from lung cancer. It was a moving moment for me, sharing this bottle that was bottle from 1928. That is an amazing memory I will never forget. What is the biggest misconception about wine to the average person?

People automatically think that you have to spend a lot of money for a good bottle of wine. Not true! You can spend $100 on a good bottle, and it absolutely should be great! However, it’s our job to find the $15-$20 bottle that performs at the same level of satisfaction for the consumer. You don’t have to

break the bank for it. Of course, it’s nice to splurge on an expensive bottle for an occasion, but if you are a regular wine drinker, you can absolutely find the perfect one for you in your price range. Some people would tend to be intimated by wine; what would you tell them?

They need to let their guard down and experiment! There are no two palates that are similar. It’s what you like and your taste. That’s why it’s important to attend wine tastings! To broaden your palate and see what grape appeals to you. Wine tastings! Tell me about wine tastings at Gasbarro’s. Can anyone attend?

Absolutely! We have 30 wine tastings per year and they are complimentary. We can also accommodate off-site tastings for events or gatherings. Wine tastings are the perfect way for the new wine drinker to come and explore; and it’s free! Your magnificent wine cellar boasts wines that are hard to find. How do you acquire those?

We have relationships with several Italian vineyards and CA boutique wine vineyards. I would like for Gasbarro’s to be the place where people go to find an obscure wine, and when they are looking for a serious choice. There are some wines in our cellar that you can’t find anywhere in Rhode Island; and I like for Gasbarro’s to be the shop people think about when they are looking for something that they can’t easily find. The relationships my family and I have built along the way have been instrumental; as we all know, relationships are everything!

Speaking of relationships, you have an outstanding reputation for staff. What do you look for in an employee?

The person who has to work here is driven, passionate, and a lover of people. We are part of the family of the people who come here. We have many loyal customers and always want to make them feel like family each and every time they come in. That is important to me. And when staff is out doing deliveries, I want to make sure they are putting forth the best possible customer service. Do you deliver statewide for free?

Absolutely! We deliver 6-days a week with no minimum! This is unheard of; and we love to offer that concierge service to our customers. What do you love most about your job?

I love the fact that no day is ever the same. I also enjoy always trying a different wine from a different region and year. I am always learning as I go. I also love knowing that people come here to make selections for their Monday dinner to their daughter’s wedding, and it’s heartwarming to be part of that growth. Just as much as my customers are part of my family, it’s nice to know that I play a part in theirs, as well. ShopInRI 39

YOGA, PILATES AND MEDITATION BENEFITS By Susan Gazerro Life in today’s society is so hectic. Everyone is running in a million directions. We often forget to take time to just “be” and relax. Yoga, pilates, and meditation are perfect for refocusing, regrouping, and cleansing the mind and body. Through yoga, we can experience the feeling of safety within our bodies. Let me explain. Starting with our breathing, each breath anchors us in the present moment and empowers us with the ability to self-regulate. The philosophy of yoga is to reeducate the body and mind through movement, breath, and stillness. One becomes mindful and self aware. Stress levels are reduced. It’s “self time” and time to detox the mind. You become one with your mind, without attaching yourself to your storiesyour stress. It’s awareness without ownership. It’s a time you can think clearly without the interference of outside influences and circumstances. Tragic events leave lasting impressions on the mind. Trauma is not only an event, but an experience held in the body. The body remembers neglect, abuse, and terror. Trauma keeps us trapped between regret of the past and fear of the future. As we move through the yoga postures, we ground ourselves in our bodies and in our strength. There are also many physical benefits of yoga. The body becomes much more flexible. I was the least flexible person until faithfully starting stretching and incorporating yoga into my routine. Within a short period, it was amazing how much further I could stretch without feeling a pull or pain. Other benefits of yoga include soothing sciatica, relieving lower back pain, relieving tension in 44 ShopInRI

the neck and shoulders, strengthening the hips, knees, and feet, improving digestion, and assisting with weight loss. Pilates, practiced faithfully, includes a number of benefits, as well. These include increased lung capacity and circulation, strength, and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles. Muscular and mental coordination are key components in an effective Pilates’ program. Posture, balance, and core strength are all heartily increased. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience positive body awareness for the first time. Pilates teaches balance and control of the body, and that capacity spills over into other areas of one’s life. Over the last 20 years, Pilates has experienced an explosion on a global level. Again, pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen, and

balance the body. With systematic practice of specific exercises, coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself invaluable, not only as a fitness endeavor, but also as an important adjunct to professional sports’ training and physical rehabilitation of all kinds. Meditation is a practice to purify negative experiences and to open a new dimension to our lives. It is a means to tap into a deep source of positive energy and joy. Meditation brings a sense of inner calmness and reduces stress. It can also deepen our connections with others in the world around us. Everyday life, stories, emotions, situations, etc., limit our experiences because they leave us feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Meditation helps in how we perceive the world by expanding our mind and thoughts beyond those everyday life occurrences. Meditation has been a

practice for over 5,000 years. And, life was certainly slower 5,000 years ago. People didn’t have the need to disconnect from the world the way we do, as they didn’t have the anxiety and stress we live with today; but it was a practice that was both spiritual and practical. Even back then, people were aware of the benefits of practicing meditation. Meditation was first documented in India. China and Japan were also developing their own form of meditation. It really gained ground as a spiritual practice when the Buddhists started practicing. Christianity never embraced meditation, however; prayer and meditation share numerous similarities. To sum this up, as a fitness instructor, I find comfort in cardio training, weight training, resistance training, marathon training, etc., however; these types of practices are just as important to the mind, body and soul, as is physical activity. Yoga and pilates provide physical benefits, and along with meditation, help with keeping the mind in shape. While taking care of everything in our lives, those who exercise take care of their bodies, but without a strong cleansing of toxins of the mind, anything and everything else in our lives can potentially turn into chaos. When you feel good mentally, everything else falls into place.

Quotes: “She fell in love with yoga, then she fell in love with herself ” It’s so true; when you do something for yourself that you love, it makes you feel good and suddenly you like who you are. “The body benefits from movement, while the mind benefits from stillness” Again, these practices are what cleanse the mind. You need a clean, clear mind to fulfill your life. “The mountains you are carrying you were only supposed to climb” Not a mediation quote, but a quote that speaks volumes. Stop taking everything on thinking you have to solve or fix it. Some things are just meant for you to see and learn from. Just climb; don’t carry. ShopInRI 45

Spring & Summer 2017 Fashion Trends By: Sarah Wessel & Rosanna M.

1. Off The Shoulder

2. Exaggerated Sleeves Statement sleeves hit the fashion world by storm this season and will continue to do so. The statement sleeves vary in style. They can bell or poof and cinch at the wrist, flare at the elbow, or have frills upon frills! Theses exaggerated sleeves add movement and drama to any outfit. These tops are also a great transition piece that can be worn from the day into the night! 2

Shoulder exposure is definitely in this summer. Whether it is both shoulders, or only one, this trend allows for those collar bones to be accentuated! These tops are designed to casually drape off of the shoulder, adding a sexy feel, without showing too much skin. Left to right: Niko Jumpsuit from Flaunt Boutique/ Tiered Off the Shoulder Top from Nordstrom

3. Frayed Bottom Jeans Frayed bottom jeans are perfect because they allow accomplishing two looks: either edgy distressed or flirty fun. These jeans come in all different shades and colors, along with also having different amounts of frayed edges to them. This jean trend cuts off at the ankle and proceeds to fray at the ends.

4. Feminine Frills Frills have come and gone throughout the past years, but for this spring/summer, they are here to stay. The frill details add a romantic feel to the garment and soften the look quite a bit, while also providing movement. Left to right: Ruffle Off the Shoulder Blouse from Nordstrom/ Short Sleeve Ruffle Cotton Top from Express

5. Sheer Factor Sheer has come into play in many garments, and in many different ways. From sheer long sleeves, to a sheer overlay skirt, it is a fashion statement that allows you to show a little more, without feeling over exposed. Left to right: Off the Shoulder Bikini Body Suit Maxi Dress from Express/ Embroidered Tulle Blouse from Zara

6. Shades of Denim Another trend involving denim this season is wearing jeans that show off many different shades. These patchwork jeans add a fun, easygoing flare to your outfit! You can easily transition these jeans from day to night, while making them casual or dressy.

The Amazing Feminine Allure of Dark Blonde Hair

By Christine Gonsalves

Hi folks, I hope this article finds you prosperous and in good health, but mostly in good health! For this month’s beauty tips, I would like to talk about the absolutely gorgeous allure of dark blonde hair! When a few rays of light, hit a head of beautiful dark blonde hair, you will immediately see that its color is really a tint of brown with golden flecks for structure and sophistication. At Chrissy’s, we know how to achieve this alluring hair color and how to care for dark blonde hair because we do it all the time! There is certainly nothing dull about dark blonde hair. The soft yet light warmth of this color creates an air of natural elegance and femininity. It would be hard not to give dark blonde hair a second look, especially if the haircut allows the hair to move freely as magical whimsical streaks appear and add visual texture. Dark blonde hair has a way of framing your face softly, without overwhelming your face and makeup.

Beware: You may have previously colored your hair blonde or added light streaks to it. These color treatments involve bleaching, which extracts the natural red pigments from hair. As a result, the dark blonde color application may not exactly provide the expected color result. After coloring your hair dark blonde, you may add a few highlights and you will absolutely not believe the fantastically gorgeous results!! How to Care for Dark Blonde Hair This is where color protection shampoos come in. Aside from conditioning the hair, they also protect the full beauty and intensity of your hair color. Makeup Tips for Women with Dark Blonde Hair *Dark blonde is a soft, naturally looking color. Using nude makeup sparingly will deepen this naturally beautiful appearance. *Light complexions in combination with cool dark blonde hair look particularly nice with a little rosecolored blush. *Warm dark blonde hair calls for bronze blush on light skin. *Styling and attitude can bring out the bolder side of wearing dark blonde hair. *Makeup choices also determine whether you want to look feminine or sassy.

How to Color Your Hair Dark Blonde

*Neutral colors work best in combination with dark blonde hair.

The natural color of your hair should be in the range between light blonde and medium brown, therefore; allow your hairdresser to have a close look at your natural hair color, before you decide on a cool or warm dark blonde tone.

*Flashy colors simply do not look harmonious next to the soft tones of dark blonde hair.

58 ShopInRI

*Gold, ochre, and brown are ideal makeup colors for women wearing warm tones of dark blonde hair.

*Both the hair and the complexion will show a warm glow. *Cooler silvery makeup colors work well with the cooler tones of dark blonde hair. OOooops, as usual, I’m almost out of room, so I hope you stay healthy and prosperous, but mostly healthy, and I’ll see you next month, and remember, “If your hair is not becoming to you, then maybe you should be coming to us” where Classy meets Sassy! -Chrissy

IRA, which, at the child’s age and income level, may be a good choice. With a Roth IRA, children can access their contributions at any time, tax- and penalty-free. They can’t touch the earnings without incurring both taxes and penalties, however, until they reach 59½. But you will want to encourage them to keep the money in their IRA intact, giving it the chance to grow.

Financial Gifts – and Tips for New Graduates It’s Graduation Season again. If your child is graduating from high school or college, you have reason to celebrate. But what should you give to your newly minted diploma holder? You might want to consider offering a combination of financial gifts and tips, which, taken together, could set your graduate on a path toward a successful, independent life. What sort of gifts and tips should you consider? Here are a few ideas: Give a few shares of stock. Everyone should understand the financial markets and how they work. One great way to encourage this interest is to give your child a few shares of stock. Young people enjoy owning a piece of a company that makes the products and services they like – and the very act of ownership can inspire them to learn more about investing and to ask questions: What causes the stock price to go up or down? How long should I hold this stock? Should I own several stocks like this one, or is it better to branch out to find new opportunities? Over time, in learning the answers to these and other questions, your child can become familiar with investing and how to make the best choices. Encourage your graduate to open an IRA. Your child can open an IRA as long as he or she has some earned income. You might want to suggest that your child consider a Roth 66 ShopInRI

Provide some financial education. Unfortunately, most young people don’t really receive any kind of formal financial education. Of course, you can try to provide some of this knowledge to your own children, but, as you know, advice from Mom and Dad sometimes gets ignored. However, you might get better results if you arrange for your recent graduate to meet with a financial professional. As mentioned above, owning stocks, and following their progress, can teach your children a great deal about investing, but a financial professional can paint the “big picture” and explain how all aspects of money management – such as borrowing, budgeting, saving and investing –fit together to help individuals stay in control of their finances and make progress toward their important financial goals, such as buying a house and retiring in comfort. Recent graduates, whether leaving high school or college, are at “turning points” in their lives and can benefit greatly from understanding the importance of developing good, lifelong financial habits. Most of us can think of several money-related mistakes we’ve made over the course of many years. And your children will make some errors, too. But by providing them with some appropriate financial gifts and valuable advice upon their graduation, they may well be better prepared to keep those mistakes to a minimum – while maximizing their ability to make good decisions.

8 Things You Can Do to Protect Your Dog THIS Summer 1. Never, ever leave your dog in the car. 2. Make sure your dog has unlimited access to fresh water. 3. Make sure your dog has access to shade when outside. 4. Take walks during the cooler hours of the day. 5. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like asphalt) because it can burn your dog’s paws. 6. If you think it’s hot outside, it’s even hotter for your pet – make sure your pet has a means of cooling off. 7. Keep your dog free of external parasites (fleas, ticks) and heart worms. Consult your veterinarian about the best product for your pet. 8. Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats (talk to your veterinarian first to see if it’s appropriate for your pet), and apply sunscreen to your dog’s skin if she or he has a thin coat.

West Place Animal Sanctuary By: Jenn Lombari Celebrating a decade of helping animals, Wendy Taylor, founder of West Place Animal Sanctuary, sat with me and explained why she started working on this adventure and how she made it a reality. Her quest was to leave no animal to suffer. She moved to the property that sits in scenic Tiverton, RI in the late 90s. A couple of years into renovating the house, there was a tragic fire that took the life of her animals. It took roughly a year and a half to rebuild and she wanted to do something to honor the memory of her lost pets. A friend had recommended that she donate money to an organization that benefits animals; but, that didn’t seem like enough. As Wendy explained this to me, she laughed and said, “I should have taken them up on that suggestion. It would have been much easier.” However, she wanted to be more involved and hands on. She decided she wanted to start her own non-profit organization where she would take in the animals and care for them instead of giving money to someone else to do it. IT TAKES WORK! Wendy has been a lawyer for 20 years and has scaled her practice back to focus on the sanctuary. She never had any experience in filing for non-profit status. She sought out an associate in her office that was familiar with that type of filing and she was able to help with the necessary paperwork. She 74 ShopInRI

explained that the corporation part was easy. Filing to become a 501(c)(3) takes a lot of work and you need to know what you’re doing. Sometimes it takes a year or more to get approved, if at all, and she was lucky to only have to wait a few months because she was able to show her organization could take some of the burden off of local animal control and other organizations. The eight acre property is surrounded by several hundred acres of wilderness. It sits amongst Weetamoo Woods and Pardon Gray Preserve. This makes wildlife release easy and the animals don’t have to be relocated. There is even a garden on the property where the sanctuary grows berries, grapes, peanuts, and sunflowers to wean the animals off of grain and pellets, to prepare them for their return to

nature. They also grow carrots, corn, and lettuce for the horses and other domestic farm animals under their care. What started as a few hours a week rehabilitating baby birds had grown through word of mouth. Wendy had begun with a sub-permit. The wildlife clinic she trained with likes to start people off with baby birds because there are so many each spring. She transitioned to waterfowl and game birds, specifically because that is what is most ideal for the facility and amount of staff she has. At the present time, the sanctuary hosts wild mallards, turkeys and other game birds, Canadian geese, wood ducks, swans, and domestic ducks. The domestic ducks are usually found as babies and mistaken for mallards. At the time of this interview, the staff of volunteers were preparing for the next few months by arranging

space and heat lamps for an expected 250 babies. How do bigger animals find their way to the farm? While West Place Animal Sanctuary is set up for wildlife rehab and exotic birds, there are special situations where it is necessary to take in and care for domestic farm animals that are in dire need of help. Some will be referred to larger rescue facilities that have more space, staff, and a larger budget. The quality of care and quality of life of the animals always comes first. A very special situation arose in July of 2016 in Westport, MA. There was a cruelty case that involved 1200 animals on a 70+ acre farm and the ASPCA called in West Place for any help they could offer. West Place was onsite into November 2016, alongside the ASPCA, helping with daily care, transport, and whatever else was needed. They had the room and enough volunteers at the time to take in several sheep and goats, fish, and some exotic birds that the ASPCA helped build a shelter for at the sanctuary. Animals that have suffered have a forever home at West Place Animal Sanctuary. Wildlife is there to rehab and be released, but some like it there and refuse to leave and that is fine. Some wildlife will stay at the sanctuary their whole life if there is something wrong with them that will prevent them from surviving in the wild. Wendy’s favorite success story is that of a turkey that was brought to her seven years ago. The turkey was only 2 days old when found and was mistaken for a baby duck by the people who discovered her. “She may not have been everyone’s favorite. She could be a little ‘pecky’”, said Wendy. The turkey had been abandoned by her mother. Any mother bird will survey the babies and take with her the ones that can keep up, and the rest are left behind for food. This particular baby had disfigured toes and couldn’t walk well. Eventually, her leg started to grow the wrong way. At 2 months old, the vet gave her a 10% chance of surviving. “I felt like I’d have failed her if I didn’t try to help”, said Wendy. So she gave the vet the okay to perform the surgery. Later that day she got a phone call that she could come and pick up the bird and take her home. She made it! West Place Animal Sanctuary runs solely on grant awards, fundraising and donations. Tours are also available. Please visit www.westplace.org for ways you can help. ShopInRI 75

East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce East Greenwich is well known for its vibrant Main Street, great restaurants, colonial architecture and many community events all year, including the Main Street Strolls (named by Yankee Magazine as one of “the top 20 things to do in Rhode Island”), Arts on Main, Main Street Trick or Treat Parade, and Holiday Strolls. In addition, East Greenwich Main Street hosts an annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day Parade. In 2012, the Hill and Harbor Association joined together with the East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce to form a thirty member Main Street Merchants Committee of the Chamber, which works hard all year to helpmake Main Street a shopping destination for all of Rhode Island. Most of East Greenwich’s Main Street Merchants are small owner operated businesses. They look forward to welcoming shoppers to our great shops, boutiques, salons and restaurants. The Greenwich Odeum’s reopening joins with Main Street businesses to make EG’s Main Street one of the best in the region. Main Street’s year round decorations and fun filled activities are also a collaborative effort of the Chamber‚ Main Street Merchants, the Town of East Greenwich, the Main Street Association, and generous corporate sponsorship. All this support and effort demonstrates a commitment to make Main Street East Greenwich a great place to shop, eat, play and do business.

SCALLOPTOWN The area from Main Street to the Cove, from Division Street to London Street was surveyed and platted in 1716, and the corner of what is now Queen and Water Streets was designated as a shipyard. The shoreline and the shipyard naturally drew fishermen and shellfishermen, who not only processed their products at the shoreline, but lived there. The area surrounding this corner became known as Scalloptown, due to the massive piles of scallop shells that were generated from shelling the scallops. Over the years, many shanties were built by the fishermen at the edge of the cove, and on pilings over the cove. Life was hard, and the people who lived further up the hill disapproved of the living conditions in Scalloptown. By 1907, the Manufacturer’s and Farmers Journal reported some disturbing things happening at the Cove: “Where Civilization’s Tide is at Ebb – Scalloptown…” going on to call it the “filthiest, most immoral, least civilized settlement in the state…” containing a “squalid collection of huts and cabins along the waterfront in East Greenwich which goes by the name of Scalloptown.” The local Episcopal minister and the publisher of the local newspaper joined together with other concerned citizens, and built a church at the corner of Marlborough 80 ShopInRI

and Long Streets, as well as some settlement houses, to give at least some of the families a place of refuge. By 1913, the Town Council condemned many of the shanties, and the population of Scalloptown began to shrink. But it wasn’t until the 1938 hurricane that the old Scalloptown was destroyed, along with most of what was left of the “bad old days.” Today, the stories of the old Scalloptown have mostly been forgotten, and the Water Street businesses and marinas are among the most prosperous in the state. The stigma of old Scalloptown was long forgotten and cleansed forever when the Town Council in 2011 bestowed the name of Scalloptown Park to the scenic overview at the southern end of Rocky Hollow Road, ironically built on the site of the old, long closed, town dump.

GREENWICH COVE WATERFRONT Today, East Greenwich Cove doesn’t resemble the old Scalloptown settlement at all, as modern marinas and fine dining have taken its place. Gourmands from all over Rhode Island, and the east coast, drive, sail and motor their cars and boats to Greenwich Cove to visit three exceptional restaurants:

Blu on the Water

BLU on the Water Nautika Restaurant & Bar Finn’s Harborside All provide outstanding dining and drink on the edge of the cove, directly across from the untouched natural shores of Goddard Park. Shipyards and marinas also help line the Cove, as they have for centuries, including:

“911 is Disconnected...So This Is Rock ‘n Roll”

Author: Adam Bomb

Published by: New Haven Ltd his teenaged-self backstage to meet some of the hottest bands on the late 1970s concert circuit – KISS, Rush, Heart, and Van Halen (See excerpt). But the paucity of detail and clutter of minutiae hurt the narrative. While some male readers might be into hearing him dish on high school girls, Brenner, unbelievably, prints the full, real names (no pseudonyms) of high school girls so everyone they knew– and their kids today - can read irrelevant, caddish citations of his teenaged sex with them. Is this guy, raising his own 16 year old daughter, really this clueless to other people’s feelings?

If you grew up in the 1980s and were into heavy metal, you may remember Adam Bomb (known to his mother as Adam Brenner). With genuine guitar talent, pin up good looks, and a name you couldn’t forget, Brenner seemed set for Hair Metal stardom. So what happened to all that talent and hard work? Brenner grew up in his fractured, 86 ShopInRI

dissolute family. His hard working father circulated widely within the community while Adam’s mother, emotionally detached and disreputable, allowed a nanny to raise her youngest boy. But at age eight an older brother’s guitar fascinates him. Brenner is smart, ambitious and very entrepreneurial. Soon he is playing seriously and wrangling

Trivia like this appears alongside truly interesting events given short shrift. Brenner’s ride through the 1980s LA metal scene should be fascinating, he bumps into and around the famous hard rockers of the day – Ratt, Guns n’ Roses, KISS, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, Poison, Motley Crüe, and the infamous Sunset Strip. Instead, you often left asking ‘and THEN What Happened?’ Auditioning for Ace Frehley’s slot in KISS in 1982 is an exceptional high point, as is his push to record his first album in Hawaii even before securing a record deal. (This is a guy’s work ethic is admirable, as is his unwavering belief in himself.) Brenner has lived an interesting life. Despite the technical flaws, this is an enjoyable read. If you loved 1980s metal then this book is for you. I was disappointed that the book had to come to an end! You can buy this book on Amazon and hear Brenner’s music on YouTube.

was doing the crazy riff. He explained how important it is to keep the rhythm going constantly on one string while you hit the others. We sat down on the beds across from each other and I kept asking how to play things right. Even though the second album (“Van Halen II”), had just been released a week earlier (on March 23, 1979) I knew how to play parts of almost every song on the new album. When he played “Jamie’s Cryin’”, he made my V sing, just like he sounded on “Van Halen” 1. He said, “It doesn’t matter which guitar I play. It’s all in the fingers. I sound like me on any guitar.” Eddie made me feel like I was just hanging out with my big brother, playing a guitar in a hotel room while my buddy watched.

“In the start of the school year of 1978/79 when I was in 10th grade and going to Lake Washington High, I had three interests - playing guitar, smoking and girls…I was going to a lot of concerts. It was my obsession…Susie Wimberly and Debbie Ward, two girls (I knew)…could help me to meet Edward Van Halen. Debbie was a secretary for John Bauer Concert Company, a big Seattle concert promoter who had an office…in Bellevue (WA)… Debbie had inside information on the next Van Halen tour (“World Vacation Tour”). We got their hotel and flight details, as well as the fake names they used to check into hotels. She was the one that made their reservations for John Bauer. Eddie’s hotel name was Justin Time, Alex was Justin Kase, Michael Anthony was Biff Malibu, and David Lee Roth’s hotel alias was Hugh Jazz. We got to the hotel about 30 minutes after the show (April 3, 1979). The Rodeway Inn was just a cheap two-floor motel in Tacoma, near the concert. As we were going to our room on the first floor there were about 5 roadies throwing pizza at each other. All of a sudden, we spotted Michael Anthony and I ran up to him…I asked Michael Anthony, “Do you think you can get Eddie to sign (my guitar)…” He said, “Why don’t you ask him yourself ?” … “Hey Ed. Sign this kid’s guitar.” … I handed my (Flying) V (Gibson) to Edward. I asked him to take a pen and just scratch his name into the back of it. I also asked him to put his teeth marks in the head-stock. He laughed and bit the top of my guitar. He grabbed a hotel pen and scratched his name on the back. It was permanent. When he handed the guitar back to me I asked him, “Is this right?” and I started playing “I’m The One.” Eddie grabbed the guitar from me and started showing me the rhythm of “I’m The One,” how he was keeping the rhythm with the open A string while muting it the whole time, even when he

Eddie was smoking cigarettes and played whatever I asked him to. He was only 24, the Warner Bros. press kit shaved off a year…Edward’s eyes sparkled and he had the nicest smile you could ever see on a rock star. He had a small envelope of cocaine. He opened it up, took his Van Halen guitar pick to scoop up a hit, and snorted it. He said, “I’d offer you some but I only have a little bit.” I told him, “That’s OK, I’m really just a pot head.” We started playing Van Halen songs together. I played “I’m The One” and then he stopped and I played the little solo bit. Eddie shook his head in approval. He...said, “Wow, (you) really rock.” I had impressed Eddie Van Halen. I’d worked really hard, trying to learn all of his songs and leads, but watching him do it up close explained it all. He showed me how he warmed up for shows. He played a major scale starting on the low E on the third fret, then when he got to the high E string on the fifth fret, he moved it up half a step and did the scale backwards. Then he moved up another fret and repeated the scale, going a little faster each time, until he went all the way up and down the guitar neck. Eddie could spread his fingers apart further than anyone I had ever seen before. He didn’t have to adjust the position of the guitar. He played the 7-fret spread guitar solo in “Ice Cream Man” like it was nothing. His hands were beautiful. The shapes his fingers made as he touched the neck almost looked like shadow puppets. He showed me, in detail, how he did “Spanish Fly” and “Eruption”. He was really a patient teacher, and (I) had enough questions to keep him from even thinking about being bored... He was actually interested in teaching me things...We had all the time in the world. Edward was just about to become the most famous guitarist in history, but in April 1979, he was just a 24-year old kid from California that was elated to be on his first headline world tour with his big brother on the drums. His dreams were coming true.” ShopInRI 87

Movie Review By Hannah Burke

MOVIE REVIEW By: Hannah Burke

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 After the great success of Guardians of the Galaxy, they’re back to save the universe again in the second installment, Guardians of the Galaxy; Vol. 2. Some time has passed between the two movies, and the Guardians have been racking up cash doing business for buyers. The movie starts with the group on Sovereign, where their leader, Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) hires the Guardians to protect valuable batteries from an inter-dimensional space monster. A hilarious battle ensues as we follow Baby Groot (Voiced by Vin Diesel) as he dances to music. They eventually kill the beast and are rewarded with Gamora’s (Zoe Saldana) sister, Nebula (Karen Gillian), as a hostage. They leave the planet only to learn that Rocket (Voiced by Bradley Cooper) had stolen the batteries, and are then pursued by Sovereign’s extensive fleet. The Milano is badly damaged, and as they make the jump to a safe planet, a strange man flying on a spaceship decimates the entire fleet. They crash land, and the strange man appears. He claims to be Ego (Kurt Russell), Peter’s father. He is accompanied by his servant, Mantis (Pom Klementieff ). Ego convinces Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) to go back to his planet. Peter agrees, and Gamora and Drax (Dave Bautista) join him. While they are gone, Rocket, Nebula, and Groot are captured by the Ravagers. However, they’ve had a change in leadership, and Yondu (Michael Rooker) has been knocked down. Instead, Taserface (Chris Sullivan) takes the initiative. Rocket, Groot, and Yondu, along with Kraglin (Sean Gunn), escape and head to Ego. Meanwhile, Nebula takes to her own ship to find Gamora. On Ego, Peter, Gamora, and Drax learn that Ego is actually a god; and he created a body for himself to find other life. 90 ShopInRI

Peter learns that he is actually half celestial, and has bonding with his father. However, not is all as it seems. Gamora is suspicious of the planet, and has a sinking feeling of dread that something is wrong. Everyone comes together on Ego, and they are living happily. Gamora and her sister fight, but they eventually reunite. Peter and Ego work together to help develop Peter’s powers. Gamora and Peter bond and dance, but they get into a fight. Rocket and Yondu head to Ego, and everyone arrives at the final act when the painful truth is revealed; and they have to fight for not just their lives, but the lives of the entire universe. Overall, I really liked the movie. It had a great plot that arched off to help identify and help the characters develop. There was the same funny and sexually hilarious dialogue as usual; but this time, there were a lot of emotions and feelings; for example, Rocket and Yondu relating to each other on a personal level, and Rocket feeling guilty for leading his friends into the whole big mess. It really sets the movie apart from most superhero movies because it’s about a bunch of ragtag and insecure people whose lives are dependent on saving the whole galaxy. The movie had a great underlying theme of family, but it also gave off the sinking feeling that something was wrong. And, the idea of one person thinking that it’s a trap is a very cliche. I disliked how they spent most of the movie on Ego, and I wish that more acts, such as the opening battle, would have been shown. However, my favorite part had to be the ending. It was extremely tear jerking, and I cried for the last 15 minutes of the movie. There was so much heartfelt emotion, love, and the feeling of family. Overall, I give Guardians of the Galaxy; Vol. 2, 5.5 out of 6 diamonds. Rated PG-13 for cursing and sexual comedy.

Tom Brady The Movie? By Julia Romano The ending of Super Bowl LI was so remarkable that two Hollywood writers are planning to turn it into a movie. There are also many other reasons to tell the story of Super Bowl LI and the Patriots’ 2016 season. The game itself was incredibly exciting (or heartbreaking, depending on how you feel about the Pats). Tom Brady’s comeback from a four-game suspension after the ridiculous 544 daylong Deflategate uproar was victorious. The Patriots’ fifth championship in 13 years was a masterful accomplishment. Bill Belichick coached his best game ever. Brady was named Super Bowl MVP after leading the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. And, then there is the money to be made for this amazing story. According to Deadline.com, Oscarnominated writers Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson are going to team up for a movie that will focus on Tom Brady’s role in the Patriots’ improbable 25-point comeback to win Super Bowl LI over the Falcons. And yes, Atlanta fans will likely shun this movie. Deadline also added that the premise of the movie started in January 2014 with Deflategate. The movie will chronicle Brady’s “fall from grace” during the scandal, and the Patriots’ eventual 34-28 overtime victory in Super Bowl LI. Seemingly, the two writers have already spoken to many people within the Patriots’ locker room, which will allow them to give us an inside look at New England’s season. The movie will be based on a book that’s being written by New York Times’ bestselling author Casey Sherman and Boston journalist Dave Wedge. With all of the success surrounding Tom Brady and the Patriots, one would think that a movie would be the obvious next step in telling a story. However, depending on how the storyline is approached may determine if it is a success or a flop. Yes, it would be great to know the inside thoughts of Brady and Coach Belichick throughout the months leading up to the Super Bowl and obviously,

what they felt as they played catch up throughout the game, and of course, their feelings when they reached victory. But will they actually provide all of their thoughts and feelings? We have already seen everything from the DeFlategate outcome and witnessed firsthand the incredibly thrilling game, so, a re-creation of just those events will unlikely result in a blockbuster. No matter the direction taken, we must admit that the most fascinating part of this movie will be the question of who will be cast as Tom Brady. Who are the potential choices for playing Brady? And, who will fill the role of the brooding Bill Belichick? According to the Boston Globe, in a recent TV segment, the guys over at ESPN had some thoughts, offering up casting suggestions for Brady (Bradley Cooper and Brad Pitt), Bill Belichick (Bryan Cranston and Clint Eastwood) and Roger Goodell (Nicolas Cage), among others. People Magazine mused that Matt Damon, Chris Pratt, or Chris Evans might make for a strong Brady, while Fox Sports noted “House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey’s experience playing a “cranky, shady, intimidating, win-at-all-costs leader” as fine

preparation for a Belichick portrayal. Of course, portraying a man who — in New England, at least — can do no wrong requires a unique talent, and the lead role will certainly draw no shortage of interest. Back in June, for instance, Ben Affleck indicated during an interview on the short-lived HBO series “Any Given Wednesday With Bill Simmons” that he’d be up for playing “touchdown Tom Brady” in a Deflategate-related film. And if there’s a local hero role to be played, you can bet the farm that Mark Wahlberg and Leonardo DiCaprio, and will be angling for it. If any of these actors can handle a football like Brady, they would definitely be deserving of the part; but if that was the case, they would be in an entirely different profession. And, let’s not forget Brady’s wife, Gisele Bundchen. I’m sure that her role will be cast if the writers really want to make it Hollywood interesting. I’m not sure about any actresses who could portray Gisele. Why not have Gisele portray herself ? Not likely. Whatever the case, the outcome of this movie will undoubtedly be interesting, and hopefully as spectacular as Brady himself. The official release date for the movie has not yet been released.
