"Gatwick Gary" has found his biological parents. It's the end of what the New York Daily News calls a "long and emotional journey" for 33-year-old Steven Hydes, a UK man who was discovered in 1986 as a 10-day-old newborn in the ladies' room at Gatwick Airport near London, swaddled in a shawl. He'd been abandoned, and after he was adopted by John and Sandra Hydes, he decided upon turning 18 to attempt to track down his birth parents.

However, Hydes was told the police files regarding his case had been destroyed, stymying his search for years. Then he decided to recruit DNA experts to help him in his efforts. Those efforts paid off.

"After 15 years of searching, I am happy to confirm that ... we have been able to trace and confirm my birth family," the father of two wrote on his Facebook page. Hydes found his birth father and siblings, all of whom he says had no idea he even existed. Sadly, and perhaps most frustratingly, his birth mother has since died, meaning "I am unable to find out exactly what happened and why," he wrote of his abandonment more than 30 years ago.

Still, he wants others to know about the possibilities available through DNA testing. "I hope this and my story can help raise awareness and prevent other babies from being abandoned," he says. Hydes says he still has the stuffed "Gatwick Gary" bear (the airport's mascot) given to him by staff 33 years ago.

Being partners in the kitchen, as well as in life, for over 30 years, Laura and Deb Thibault made a decision last year to continue their culinary adventures together, only this time, doing something easy and fun. In July 2018, with its retro, pop art aesthetic, the Atomic Blonde Ice Cream truck took its maiden voyage on the road.

After trying it out last year and testing the waters, it was a big hit.

It’s a proven fact that ice cream makes people happy. Have you ever seen someone angry while eating an ice cream sundae? Highly unlikely.

So the Thibaults made the decision that although they are supposed to be semi-retired at this point in their lives, they are having fun and will continue to enjoy themselves while the the truck operates all season long.

Proudly serving Warwick Ice Cream, they use their creativity and experience to make unique items for all ages and appetites. Hand scooped ice cream, creative sundaes, their very own Atomic Slushies filled with fresh fruit...there really is something for everyone. They have a special place in their hearts for traditional novelties; the ones that seem to be a big hit with both the little kids and the kids at heart. Some of the oldies but goodies they offer from the Atomic Blonde truck are Nutty Buddies, Screwballs and character pops, but, there is much more on the menu.

First let’s start with the ice cream flavors: Warwick Ice Cream brand vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, cookies and cream, coffee, and pistachio almondine. Great selection! Have

some in a cone sized as kiddie, single, double, or waffle, or create a sundae cone with one topping, whipped cream, and a cherry on top! With seven toppings to choose from and six sauces, you could try a different combination throughout the whole season. This year, they have added boba balls to the list of toppings. Boba balls are bursting with fruit flavor and are a fun addition to any sundae.

Banana splits are served with three scoops of ice cream and your choice of toppings. Even homemade ice cream sandwiches are available and are stuffed with ice cream and made with homemade cookies. The Atomic Blonde Ice Cream truck even serves yummy, refreshing floats and slushies.

Refreshing Hawaiian Ice comes in several flavors, including lime rickey, cherry, grape, strawberry, watermelon,

pink lemonade, rainbow, and more. There are even signature flavor nectars that Deb and Laura make themselves.

Customers can choose these flavors for their ice cream order or Hawaiian ice in flavors such as white peach & rosemary, lemon basil and honey lavender.

“Mocktails,” mudslides and margaritas are served up without alcohol. But they’re not saying you shouldn’t bring them home and add your own “ingredients” to them.

If you’re out with some friends, two or three people can share an Atomic Blonde shake; 48 ounces includes three scoops of ice cream and a large amount of extras mixed in.

Add a Bomb Pop, watermelon pop, or a chocolate banana and you’ve entered the Atomic Bomb section of the menu.

These sundaes are HUGE! Part of the menu is standard, but there is a special featured at every event. Food Trucks have been a huge help to Laura and Deb. Inviting them to be a part of Food Truck Fridays at Roger Williams Park, baseball games in Pawtucket, and even Sons of Liberty Beer & Spirits Co., has helped them to develop a loyal following. In addition, they handle all of their own promoting and marketing, which has been a big help. Deb commented, “It’s nice to see all the happy faces.

You see people waiting in line for lunch and dinner type foods and then they line up at our truck for dessert. The line is so long and no one seems to mind. And they come back every week. We see a lot of the same people.”

Fabulous Fresh Fish

By Julia Romano Fish is one of the healthiest foods one can eat. Even going way back to ancient times, fish was a food that was a big part of people’s diets. There are so many benefits to eating fish, and in RI, so many places to ”catch” a good fish dish.

For those who would rather catch fish than eat it, there are ways to disguise it or to get its health benefits, without even eating it. For some, the smell of fish is the biggest turn off for them, especially when it’s cooked at home and the aroma takes over the entire house. Ways of reducing the smell include wrapping it in foil after adding some lemon, and baking it in the oven or put-

ting it on the grill and closing the cover. Disguising fish with other ingredients can make it more appetizing for those who don’t care for its taste and for children who are picky whom you want to provide the advantages of its health benefits. For those who refuse to eat fish, no matter what, taking fish supplements is the next best way to get its healthy benefits of improving brain health, fighting diabetes and other serious conditions, as well as getting vitamin D, which many people in today’s society are found to be lacking.

When a woman is pregnant, the vitamins and minerals of what she eats are passed on to the fetus. For optimal health of moms and babies, it is recommended that expecting and nursing mothers eat enough omega-3s. Fish is an important food choice since it is one food that is loaded with omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which accumulates in the developing brain and eyes. It is imperative to know that although fish is known to provide pregnant women many health benefits, it can also cause serious problems if the fish is one of which contains high levels of mercury. For this reason, pregnant women should only eat fish that is low in the food chain (salmon, sardines, trout, etc), and no more than 12 ounces (340 grams) per week. Pregnant women

should also avoid raw and uncooked fish (including sushi), because it may contain microorganisms that can harm the fetus.

Other evidence-based health benefit facts of eating fish include: Fish is high in important nutrients, including high-quality protein, iodine and various vitamins and minerals. Fatty types of fish are also high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D. Fish in one’s diet may lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes; eating at least one serving of fish per week has been linked to reduced risk of heart attacks and strokes, two of the world's biggest killers.

Fish contains nutrients that are crucial for healthy brain development.

Eating a diet that includes fish may slow down the decrease in brain function and protect it from deteriorating; people who eat fish regularly also have more grey matter in the brain center that controls memory and emotion. Eating more fish increases the grey matter for better memory for a longer period of time.

Eating fish may help to prevent and treat depression, making one happier.

Fish is the only really good food source of vitamin D; fatty fish like salmon and herring contain the highest amounts.

Fish consumption is linked to reduced risk of auto immune diseases, including Type 1 Diabetes.

Fish may help prevent asthma in children.

Fish may help to protect one’s vision in old age; people who eat more fish have a much lower risk of developing macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision impairment and blindness.

Eating fish may improve one’s sleep quality, especially fatty fish like salmon; better sleep improves one’s overall quality of life.

Just Another Rib Recipe BALSAMIC GLAZED CHICKEN RECIPE

There’s a million ways to make great pork ribs....and only a few ways to really ruin them. So, yeah, here’s another rib recipe.

But it’s really good.

I like using St. Louis style ribs.

They’re fattier than beef ribs, so I don’t have to worry as much about them drying out. I always remove the skin on the back of the ribs before rubbing them down with my spice rub.

8 to 10 lbs. pork ribs spice rub barbecue sauce

2 tablespoons brown sugar

SPICE 1 tablespoon granulated garlic RUB 1 tablespoon salt (I like using fine sea salt)

1 tablespoon black pepper 1 tablespoon celery seed (not celery salt) 1 tablespoon granulated onion

Combine all the spice rub ingredients. I like to grind the celery seed in a spice grinder before mixing with the others, so that I don’t get crunchy bits.

If the pork rib slabs are long, cut them in half so they’re easier to work with (and so they fit in the smoker!)

Rub the ribs with the spice rub, and place them in a 250-degree oven or smoker. Place a pan of water underneath to keep them moist and to catch any grease that drips down. I use an electric smoker, so during those 3 hours of cooking, I add hickory chips once an hour.

While the ribs are cooking, it’s time to make the barbecue sauce. I like a citrus-based, sweeter sauce, and this time, thecan breast ofsubstitute the chicken is really large,lemons, cut it inlimes half so that it cooks II had havesome chicken at least twice mandarin oranges in a theweek... kitchen. Wrap them completely with the foil and place pieces in the pan. Sear for 2 minutes on one side, then sear them for 2 more on a baking sheet in a pre-heated 250-degree oven. Cook for minutes on the other. Place the pan in the oven and cook for 30 minutes, 2 hours more.

THE MODERN DINER STANDS TALL

Looking over a poster of city landmarks, Modern Diner Owner Nick Demou notices many of them have either faded into the past or have become shells of themselves: Apex, Korb’s Bakery and The Pawtucket Times, as examples.

Even the Pawtucket Red Sox will move to Worcester, MA soon. Glancing over to the right of the picture shows several places still open.

Among those establishments is The Modern Diner, where Demou has devoted more than four decades of his life to serving people.

Located at 364 East Street, Demou, along with his business partner, Frank Aguiar, have built up a large following for their innovative menu, passion for food dating back to their youth and striving to make people happy. The

facility offers patrons breakfast and lunch meals, along with a wall of specialty items and new creations

by Demou and his staff.

What also makes Demou smile is working in an industry that offers him the chance to be creative, but also the capacity to maintain a work-life balance.

“My day starts here at 4:00 am, and by 3:00 pm, I arrive back home enjoying a normal life,” said Demou, who graduated with a Culinary Arts Degree from Johnson and Wales University in 1977. “There is more money to be made serving dinner, but then I would be here until 1:00 am. That is not a normal life for me because there is no day left to enjoy.”

The Modern Diner serves breakfast favorites like pancakes, French toast and waffles. On one day, Demou said the restaurant put crepes on the menu and they sold out quickly.

He said one of their more popular items is their Benedicts and their Hollandaise sauce. They have several Benedict options, including one with lobster and another with hash.

Perhaps the most popular item on the menu only appears on the weekends—and this item put Demou and the Diner on the map: Custard French Toast. Demou said that the concoction of custard and French toast came in the most unusual of ways, and what happened next sparked a chain of events that got the place noticed in a big way.

“People eat with their eyes,” he said. “I am able to purchase what I want, whether it’s raspberries or something more exotic. It gives the people a more enjoyable experience.”

“The Custard French Toast was created by accident. I made too much custard one day and in the restaurant business, you don’t want to waste anything. My staff and I came up with pouring some of the leftover custard with some French toast and served it. The dish flew out of here. We could not make them fast enough.”

“One day, word got to The Food Network, whose representatives said they wanted to try the Custard French Toast for their show,” Demou continued. “They came in and loved it. We were in competition with other diners across the country and we won (the restaurant appeared on Food Network’s “Top Five” because of that dish).”

This dish is only available on the weekends because of the prep time involved in making it for customers.

Another point that separates The Modern Diner from other restaurants is that they only accept cash payments. They do not take credit cards, debit cards or checks. Demou said that the reason is simple. He pays cash for his supplies and as a result, receives a better deal from suppliers.

Demou also joked that he is not an accountant and does not want the added work of having to figure out credit card receipts and other charges that comes with that process.

The Modern Diner is a very busy establishment.

Demou employs a dozen people during peak times that include three waitresses, several cooks and two people working the drink machine. They provide both booth and countertop service, and a second room for functions.

The Modern Diner is open weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Sundays from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

If patrons cannot find something on the menu—and there are three pages of items to choose from—salads, burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast served all day—the wall provides “out of the ordinary” choices. The board changes regularly, as Demou likes bringing in new food items to test when the mood strikes him, and if the item in question makes sense. “There can be as many as 30 items on the wall for people to select from,” he said.

It’s main ingredients are chickpeas and tahini (a nutty paste similar to America’s peanut butter), both of which are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, protein, and iron, with other simple ingredients such as lemon juice, olive oil and garlic. In the US, there are many different variations of the traditional flavor. The American hummus industry has been booming lately, and the main companies producing the stuff have definitely been keeping track of what US consumers like, and updating their recipes for this ancient food staple to keep up with modern tastes. Some variations are cultural and include jalapeno, chipotle, pesto, sun dried tomato, and many more

You would never find most of these hummus flavors in the Middle East or Mediterranean. But what makes these flavors amazing (besides the taste, of course), is the fact that now the United States has its own distinctly American hummus with a flair and endless flavors.

The traditional hummus chips are typically made with a blend of chickpea flour and potato starch and are baked (not fried), but nowadays, what is dipped into hummus has just as much of a variety as the number of new hummus flavors.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Lindsey Lerner is the founder of Level Exchange® in Pawtucket. Level Exchange is a space dedicated to producing and working with innovative musicians, artists, and creators to hone their craft. Her mission is to build a diverse network of savvy business owners and talent, guided by the principle that art is a business and business is an art. Her dedication and passion mixed with her cool sense of style is a breathe of fresh air. Lindsey is making her mark. Here is a day in the life of this young entrepreneur who is making waves in our state.

5:30 AM - I love waking up early. I take this time before the rest of the world is awake to do my morning yoga practice and enjoy my first of many cups of coffee for the day.

6:30AM - I journal every morning to get my thoughts down while my mind is clear. This helps me focus and set intentions for the day. Then I jump into the emails in my inbox that have come in overnight.

7:30AM - Time to walk The Beast. The Beast is my rescue dog, Finn. Once Finn gets his exercise, I spend time with my girlfriend, Rachel, before we head off to work. I sometimes bring Finn with me to Level Exchange, but this is the time we can all be together.

8:30AM - Once more emails roll in, I create my plan for the day and get to work!

10:00AM - Most days, you can find me covered in chalk, halfway up a wall at Rock Spot, Providence with Galo, and owner of Motus Made. Climbing clears my mind and helps me focus. It’s a strategic sport, and gets endorphins flowing.

12:00PM - After rock climbing, I shower and get ready for the day. I jump back into emails, and see what needs my attention.

1:00PM - Refuel #2 - I try to meet with mentors, advisors or potential clients every day. The usual setting is at The Shop, Bolt or Borealis Coffee (who happens to support my caffeine addiction with their cold brew on tap at Level Exchange!)

Some medical professionals have advised that if excess ketones are built up in the body it can become problematic. In my opinion, this diet is difficult to sustain over a long period of time.

Another one we’ve been hearing about more in recent

years is the Paleo diet.

The idea behind this diet is to eat like our very early ancestors supposedly did. Whatever could be hunted and gathered naturally should be the only food consumed. The belief is that agricultural farming has changed the food we eat and has also introduced us to harmful foods that are causing chronic illnesses and obesity. No processed foods are consumed; legumes, potatoes, and most fruits are a part of this diet. Berries, nuts, vegetables and meat are the staples of this diet. All of these should be as organic and local as possible.

It can be difficult and potentially harmful to some, however, to consume large amounts of red meats and barely any carbohydrates.

Mediterranean countries have traditionally eaten a diet that includes local and seasonal fruits, veggies, fish, legumes, dairy, breads, and olive oil. The Mediterranean diet puts much less emphasis on protein from meat and poultry sources. Poultry and red meat are eaten occasionally and on holidays. Herbs are used not just for cooking, but also in many drinks. It has been said that people who eat a Mediterranean diet have a lower risk of heart disease. Another important point about this particular diet is that there is no emphasis on counting calories or macronutrients; it is, in theory, supposed to be a more “laid back” way of eating.

From what I have learned, this diet seems the least difficult to maintain. Recipes seem relatively simple, and eating mostly local and seasonal foods is usually not a bad idea.

I could go on with various other diets; these are just a couple that people find confusing. I am not a nutritionist or a doctor, so you should always discuss any diet changes with a medical professional. What works for some, does not necessarily work for everyone; it’s up to you to research extensively and decide what works for your needs and lifestyle.

What is long-term care insurance?

A: Long-term care (LTC) insurance is a policy that provides a stream of income to help pay for expenses to a home care agency or a facility such as assisted living or a nursing home. Because Medicare won’t pay for these expenses when you need services for an extended period of time, the burden of the cost of the care will usually fall upon the person or the family of the person needing the care. Although Medicaid can pick up the costs of a nursing home, you must keep in mind that you have to qualify for Medicaid, which often means that you can have only limited assets. Although asset protection is one reason to look into LTC, other factors like remaining independent and having choices of care are often equally important. LTC can play a big role in future retirement planning so it’s a good idea to look into LTC earlier rather than later.

A: Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 or older, younger people with certain disabilities and people of any age with End Stage Renal Disease. Medicare comprises Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) benefits. Each Part (A & B) has a deductible that needs to be met before Medicare pays. Additionally, other co-insurance costs may be passed on to you, the beneficiary. Medicare Supplement insurance plans and Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are designed to reduce these costs by paying for some or all of the expenses that Medicare does not pay.

Everyone is running in a million different directions. We o en forget to take time to just relax. Yoga, Pilates and meditation are perfect practices for refocusing, regrouping and cleansing the mind and body.

Through yoga, we can experience the feeling of safety within our bodies. Let me explain. Starting with our breathing, our breath anchors us in the present moment and empowers us with the ability to self-regulate.

The philosophy of yoga is to re-educate the body and mind through movement, breath and stillness.

One becomes mindful and self aware and stress levels are reduced. It’s “self time.” Time to detox the mind. You become one with your mind without attaching yourself to your stories. It’s awareness without ownership.

To sum this up, as a fitness instructor, I am so comfortable and have a strong belief in the physical benefits of cardio training, weight training, resistance training, marathon training, etc., however, yoga, Pilates and meditation are just as important to the mind, body and soul as is physical activity.

Although yoga and Pilates do provide some physical benefits, they are also are a way to keep the mind in shape. We take care of everything in our lives, and those who exercise, take care of their bodies; but without a strong mind, anything and everything else in our life can turn to chaos. We need to cleanse our minds as well as our bodies.

When we feel good mentally, everything else falls into place much easier. an explosion on a global level. Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body. With a systematic practice of specific exercises, coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself to be invaluable, not only as a fitness endeavor, but also as an important adjunct to professional sports’ training and physical rehabilitation of all kinds.

Meditation is a practice to refine our experience and to open a new dimension to our lives. It is a means to tap into a deep source of positive energy and joy. It brings a sense of inner calmness and reduces stress.

Meditation deepens our connections with others in our lives and the world around us.

“The body benefits from movement, while the mind benefits from stillness.”

Again, these practices are what cleanse the mind.

You need a clean, clear mind to fulfill your life.

“The thing about meditation is you become more and more YOU.” Go within, find strength and peace, so the world cannot blow your candle out.

Everyday life, stories, emotions, situations, etc., limit our experiences because they leave us feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Meditation helps in how we perceive the world by expanding our mind and thoughts beyond those everyday life occurrences. Meditation has been practiced for over 5,000 years and life was certainly slower during that time. People didn’t have the need to disconnect from the world they way we do, as they didn’t have the anxiety and stress we live with today, as a result of being overwhelmed with everyday life. It was a practice that was both spiritual and practical. Even back then, people knew there were benefits to practicing meditation. It was first documented in India. China and Japan were also developing their own form of meditation at that time. It really gained ground as a spiritual practice when the Buddhists started practicing meditation. Christianity never embraced meditation, however, prayer and meditation share so many similarities.

Let the 2019 EAST GREENWICH Strolls Begin!

The East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce and its Main Street Merchants Committee proudly announced their 2019 Main Street Stroll schedule! Last year was one of the most successful Stroll years in recent memory.

Highlights included: the partial closing down of Main Street for our Taste of EG Stroll and the EG Chamber winning a Best in Rhode Island award for Best Free Attraction on the West Bay. We also received recognition from Governor Gina Raimondo for that award.

This year, the goal of the Chamber’s Main Street Committee is to build upon last year’s success. “We continually are striving to make the Strolls even better and to provide East Greenwich residents and visitors to EG with a wonderful Main Street experience,” said East Greenwich Chamber Executive Director Stephen M. Lombardi.

The EG Chamber’s Main Street Committee and its Coordinator, Amy Moore, are planning enhancements to the Strolls for 2019. One opportunity that has been identified is inviting artists to participate in all four Strolls; not just having artists focus on the Arts on Main Stroll, which features Chalk the Block. The Committee that feels there is a great need and opportunity for artists to take advantage of all of the foot traffic at the three other very popular Strolls.

Local artists will be there to showcase and sell their art in a street fair type atmosphere as part of the Main Street Strolls.

Local musicians (as well as artists) will be invited to participate in the Music on Main Stroll scheduled for Thursday, July 20. East Greenwich’s Music on Main Stroll features music of all types and styles. Those who are interested in participating should also contact Amy Moore at the EG Chamber.

For those looking to participate in the “Chalk the Block” street drawing contest, and pre-registers by Thursday, June 13, will receive an exclusive CHALK THE BLOCK t-shirt! Walk-in registrations will also be accepted on the day of the event. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in various categories, including individual participants ages four and up, as well as family groups. Participants of all skill levels are welcome. You can draw by yourself or create a family team. If you are not ready to show your artistic side, come enjoy the day and vote for your favorite drawing in the People’s Choice Award! The husband and wife team of Stephen and Jeanne Cinquegrana started with a small idea and built it into a multi-dimensional outlet for customers to enjoy whatever part of the day they happen to be in when they arrive.

For Main Street Coffee and Toscana Bar, located at 137 Main St. in East Greenwich, they opened in November 2003,

serving coffee on its initial menu, along with breakfast, lunch and dinner. They specialize in regular and organic coffees along with espresso, cappuccino, lattes, and other drinks for their customers.

The restaurant seats 45 people inside the facility and another 10 can be seated outside. There is a staff of 10 employees, who are knowledgeable about their selections and very friendly.

Stephen Cinquegrana said that the clientele hasn’t changed much since they opened more than a decade-and-a-half ago.

“This was a concept that my wife and I had back when opening coffee shops was all the rage,” he said. “There were Starbucks opening up literally on every corner. We were local and grew our business by word-of-mouth

and providing excellent products.”

With that, the upscale establishment also serves breakfast items ranging from biscotti made by Jeanne Cinquegrana, to muffins and breakfast sandwiches. Lunchtime features sandwiches, paninis and salads, while dinner items include different varieties of pizzas and hummus plates.

What sets them apart from the other coffee shops first took place in 2006, and remains their “calling card” to this day. The Cinquegranas opened an

espresso martini bar on the other side of their restaurant. Stephen Cinquegrana said that the chance to cater to a different clientele suited them, and when the opportunity presented itself, he and his wife took full advantage.

“When the owner of one of the local bars closed, they gave up their liquor license,” he said. “We went in to apply, went through the process and

obtained the license. We knocked down the wall that separated the bar from the coffee shop and served coffee martinis. They are a huge hit and come in numerous variations.”

Main Street Coffee has been recognized for their innovative restaurant. They were named “The Best in Rhode Island” 12 times and “The Best Neighborhood Bar in West Bay.” Main Street Coffee is open Monday through Thursday from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Friday and

Saturday from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM and Sunday from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. 5 Tips to Manage Your Finances When One Parent Stays at Home Almost one-in-five American families with children have one parent stay at home, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data from the Pew Research Center.1 Some families make a conscious choice to transition to a household with a stay-at-home parent, while others experience a job loss or underemployment. In either case, becoming a one-income household results in a big change in cash flow. If you are making this move, it is vital to understand the financial implications and a develop strategy to adjust spending while still prioritizing your savings goals. Here are five strategies to consider: Adjust your spending to fit your new lifestyle.

The “elephant in the room” question is whether you need to make changes to your lifestyle to accommodate the decrease in income. You can expect your spending to go down in some areas – such as childcare or commuting expenses – but keep in mind the savings may be offset by increased entertainment, food or other costs. Unexpected expenses can pop up anytime, so it’s even more important for single income families to have six-to-nine monthsworth of paychecks set aside in a readily accessible account to meet emergency needs.

Update your insurance coverage.

Any time you or your spouse experiences a change in employment it’s important to review and update your insurance coverage. Life and disability insurance are necessities, even for stay-at-home parents. If the stay-athome parent becomes ill, disabled or passes away, life insurance helps preserve the lifestyle of the living parent and children by covering childcare and other household expenses. As for health insurance, first check the plans offered by the working spouse’s employer to see if there is an option that covers your whole family. If that’s not an option, explore your choices in the insurance marketplace provided by the Affordable Care Act. Adjust your tax strategy.

Contact your tax advisor to discuss if your new household income will impact your tax strategy. For starters, if your level of income is reduced, you may move into a lower marginal income tax bracket. If this happens, you may want to: •

Consider how your revised tax rate may affect your investment strategy; and

Adjust the amount of money withheld from the paycheck of the spouse who will continue to work outside the home. Your tax advisor can provide guidance.

Revisit your plans to achieve key goals.

Once you make the move to becoming a one income household, don’t overlook your long-term financial goals.

If you’ve been setting money aside for key goals such as a new home, retirement and building a college fund

for your children, it is prudent to keep those plans on track. Even if you need to reduce the amount of your contributions in the near term, remember that even modest amounts add up over years – or even decades – of saving.

Talk about if the stay-at-home parent will return to work one day.

Many stay-at-home parents choose to re-enter the workforce on a part- or full-time basis once their youngest child is enrolled in kindergarten, able to drive themselves to school or graduates from high school.

Discuss each of your wishes now and keep the lines of communication open. If returning to work is an option, the stay-at-home partner should consider keeping up with any required continuing education, licenses, and professional association memberships to help ease the transition down the road.

Shifting from two incomes to one is an adjustment, even when you and your partner make the choice consciously. Few people know what they want to do when they get out of high school.

Some go off to attend college, some work for their parents or someplace else, while others decide to take time off to assess their options.

David Harris, President of Nu-Look Seal Coating and Asphalt, located at 3 Rocky Hill Road in Smithfield, chose a different path.

After high school, Harris enlisted in the United States Navy, where he specialized in equipment operations.

His stint in the Navy led to a job at Smithfield Peat working on several projects before realizing that owning his own company would become his destiny. Harris left Smithfield Peat to begin this endeavor, which has been growing for more than three decades as a residential, commercial and industrial project resource.

He noted that the beginnings were as minimal as one can imagine for a startup company.

advertising in the beginning— stuffing fliers in mailboxes at night and putting up signs when we worked on projects,” said Harris, who began Nu-Look Seal Coating and Asphalt with David Passarelli. “I worked a lot of the time, saved my money and bought a $500 truck that we used for these initial projects. Eventually, I saved enough money to invest in more expensive and innovative equipment.”

Harris and Passarelli also benefited from some good luck by being at the right house at the right time. Harris said they did a job at one house and returned to add on another coat of asphalt to make sure the job was perfect. The owner of the house was notably impressed with their work and asked the pair to come to a meeting at his company.

That house was owned by the thenpresident of Warren Oil, and he wanted Harris to take over the paving projects at his properties. That chance meeting led to getting other

well-known accounts such as Susse Chalet in Smithfield. That expanded to include other Susse Chalets from Maine down the East Coast. They also had the Toys R Us account for their stores (when they were still in business).

As times changed, so did their company, and that included expansion into asphalt paving. Over time, that part of their business became the largest portion of their income.

However, between the pair, Harris said they are busy with new and existing projects.

After relocating the operation a number of times due to company growth, Harris said that he purchased a building at the Rocky Hill Road location that had been abandoned for nearly two decades. The facility underwent a major overhaul that included adding space in back to accommodate the newer equipment and materials that they need.

That also included a bigger office

area. Harris recalled having so little space for his employees to work, they needed to schedule time for every employee to use the desk. That is not the case anymore, with enough workstations to have a half-dozen people working without feeling crowded. There is also room for a conference desk for meetings.

Another part of the industry which has been cleaned up is the “gypsy-like” presence of some asphalt and paving companies. Harris said that some businesses set up shop one day and leave shortly thereafter—often with customers searching for answers on why their project was not completed or was done poorly.

Harris said that policies, laws and the general perception of the industry making it tougher for companies to operate like that, have helped bring about a better experience for consumers.

“The industry had a bad rep for years because some companies cut corners and did not deliver on what they promised,” Harris said. “That gave the ones who worked hard and did what they set out to do a black eye. We may not be the least expensive outfit, but we take the time to do the job right and make sure that the client is completely satisfied with our work.”

Harris said that a residential project usually takes two days to complete. One day to prep the area and the second day to do the job. Commercial jobs may take longer depending on the project’s scope.

While most projects are typically routine, he remembered one project out on Block Island that proved to be both rewarding and challenging. He noted the issues of having to bring the equipment and staff over by ferry to the job site. Harris said that the job got done and the reviews were well received after the project finished.

Most of the clients are located within a 25-mile radius, although Harris quickly points out that his company serves all of Rhode Island and parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut. They are currently seeking applicants to work on their crews. Interested parties can contact the office for more details and qualifications.

With the technology in window manufacturing advancement today, one would think that the traditional storm window market may be falling by the wayside.

This is far from the truth.

When folks update the windows on their homes & businesses, they do seem to steer towards windows not requiring storm windows, however, there are a whole lot of people who still have a need for storm windows. Below are several benefits of storm windows and reasons that people still choose them over other windows that may not require a storm window.

This is especially the case on buildings with older wooden windows, where the property owner enjoys the cosmetics of the older wood windows, but needs a little added protection in order to more properly insulate their home, as well as to help better preserve the life of their wooden windows.

Storm windows add an element of energy efficiency to people’s homes.

•

Storm windows also protect the exterior-facing portions of the wood windows that they are placed over.

•

By simply having storm windows in place, I believe you triple the life of the paint-cycle related to the exterior-facing portion of these types of wood windows. In other words, if you paint your home once every 10 years, the windows that the storm windows are placed over should not really have to be touched from a repainting standpoint for at least 30 years.

Storm window technology has certainly advanced over time. The more traditional style of storm windows are still available from storm window manufacturers, but most storm window manufacturers have also developed lines of storm windows that are more robust, more energy efficient and more easily operable than the conventional models.

Replacing and/or installing storm windows is a part of our business that we truly enjoy doing.

When we replace storm windows with newer ones, we typically are greatly improving how well a home retains heat in the winter and keeps cooler in the summer.

RON’S BARBER STYLIST SHOP CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN CUMBERLAND

Nothing shows a community that a business has achieved something more than when they celebrate a milestone anniversary. Celebrating a first anniversary can be impressive because it means overcoming incredible odds and potentially crippling business decisions in order to succeed. It may also signal that the company has loyal and devoted customers.

Ron’s Barber Stylist Shop, located on 2000 Mendon Rd., Ste. 6, in Cumberland, thrived because customers who went to the shop now bring their children for the latest in haircuts, fashions and styles. While trends often change with the times, Owner Jen Hamel sees the generations looking to receive the same service.

“We have an amazing clientele, our customers are like family to us because we see them on a monthly basis and really get to know and genuinely care for each and everyone,” said Hamel who purchased the shop after her brother-in-law, Ron Comire, who the shop is named after, passed away in 2012. Hamel kept the shop’s name in his honor. “They have trust in us that we will always give them a good haircut and that’s what keeps them coming back and keeping this barbershop such a strong foundation.”

The four-employee shop, including Hamel, caters to men, women and children, although Hamel admits that the majority of people who come into 70 ShopInRI

the shop are men. They are all experienced in a wide variety of current and traditional hairstyles, and they still do shaves with a straight razor, something not all barbershops these days offer, Hamel said.

She added the consistency of her staff has been a driving force in their continued success.

“Ann Mangano has been here since 1993 and also worked with Ron for over 20 years. My daughter, Sheena Alescio, came to work with us in 2012 when Ron passed away. She will most likely be taking over the business when I retire. We recently added Spring Morrissey to

our team and she is a great fit with lots of experience. Hamel said the team makes a great business that keeps their customers happy and new ones coming back.

“Our customers know coming into the shop that they will get a great haircut consistently in a professional, relaxed environment,” Hamel concluded.

Hamel worked at a salon as a hairstylist before barbering. She apprenticed under a barber when she began working with Comire at the barbershop in 1990, transitioning from woman in a hair salon to getting her barber license. She noted that the choice between working in a salon and becoming a barber was easy.

“I wanted to become a barber because I didn’t like working with all of the chemicals in the salon,” she said.

She also said Comire gave Hamel her first taste of the business by giving her first haircut. Hamel said she may have been more nervous about the event than her brother-in-law may have been. She also credits him for showing her how to care for the tools

of the trade, including how to maintain and repair them.

According to Hamel, the shop was not always located in Cumberland. The place had been situated in Woonsocket by the previous owner. Comire worked for the last owner before taking it over. She said the previous owner was known to be a character and be very outspoken, very opposite of Ron who was very soft spoken and friendly.

While Comire spent nearly four decades at the current location, it has been Hamel who has kept the business running for the past six-and-a-half years. She said Comire wasn’t going to get out of the business entirely because he enjoyed doing it and liked being around people. While he considered slowing down and selling the place, Hamel said he never really got the chance to enjoy retirement with his untimely passing.

“At the time, Ron said he was going to cut down days eventually and slowly retire, however unfortunately, he passed away suddenly before getting to enjoy much time off, and that’s when I took over the business in 2012.”

She added that during that time, people have been very supportive of Hamel and the shop. They have told her stories about Comire about the store and the shared many other anecdotes. For Hamel, she remembers the times Comire would baby sit each other’s kids. She noted that Comire was like a brother to her and enjoyed the times they spent together talking about the industry and what she could do to elevate her business.

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE HOSTS THE 2019 NFL DRAFT IN A HUGE WAY

The city of Nashville was founded by James Robertson, John Donelson, and a party of Overmountain Men in 1779, near the original Cumberland settlement of Fort Nashborough. It was named for Francis Nash, the American Revolutionary War hero.

nounced. To cap off a record-breaking year in visitors, in 2018, an estimated 175,000 to 200,000 people attended Jack Daniel’s Music City Midnight: New Year’s Eve in Nashville. That number far exceeded the 100,000 attendees organizers originally expected.

Nashville is Tennessee’s state capital and is well known as "Music City"– the country music capital of the world. The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville is the longest continuously running live radio program in the world. It has broadcast every weekend since 1925. Bluegrass music originated in Bristol, in northeastern Tennessee.

Nashville is the hub of country and Western music going way, way back. With roughly 200 recording studios and major record labels, booking agencies, and publishing companies in and around Music Row, there’s no doubt that the city remains “Music” City. But, it’s transformed beyond that. From its thriving fashion design scene and art galleries to its collection of parks and underdog sports teams, the culture of Nashville follows a narrative the rest of the country and world admires. Last year, the city brought in more than 15.2 million visitors, according to the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. (NCVC).

Most people visit Nashville for the unique experience offered on the popular Lower Broadway. The famous neon lights of the Broadway honky tonks have deservingly earned Nashville the nickname, “NashVegas.”

This strip of bars offers live music every day of the week and partying goes on into the early morning hours.

Many of Nashville's famous night spots are found on Broadway between First and Fifth Avenues - better known as “Honky Tonk Row.”

The number of people visiting Music City each year keeps rising. About 15.2 million tourists visited Nashville in 2018 - nearly 5 percent more than in 2017's 14.5 million - the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp an76 ShopInRI

In the area “North of Broadway,” there are historic buildings redeveloped into music attractions, boutique hotels, art galleries, and chef-driven restaurants, and “South of Broadway,” there are newly constructed hotels, eateries, music venues, and attractions. Either way you go, there is plenty of fun to be had around Nashville’s incredibly walkable downtown campus.

With all of this said, why wouldn’t the NFL choose Nashville as the 2019 draft destination?

The NFL Draft is one of the biggest events surrounding the NFL, and it means big business and big exposure

for its host city. Nashville has made overtures to host the draft for nearly a decade. At one point, Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp. President and CEO Butch Spyridon was so intent on bringing the draft to Nashville that he delivered a sales pitch for Music City even when NFL officials hadn't asked for applications.

In 2019, the city’s “draft dream” became a reality. The 84th NFL draft took place on April 25-27 in Nashville, Tennessee. It was the latest sports and entertainment victory for a city that has recently landed an MLS expansion franchise, seen its hockey team, the Predators, explode in popularity and cemented its reputation as a global destination for music fans.

The other cities considered for the 2019 and 2020 NFL drafts included Las Vegas, Denver, Kansas City and a combination bid from Cleveland/Canton, Ohio.

Nashville was already one of the big favorites throughout the process, which was officially narrowed down to five candidates in February, but the NFL loved what they saw at the Titans' April 4 uniform unveiling which had 20,000 fans dancing and partying on First and Broadway Street on a 40-degree Wednesday night.

Butch Spyridon, the president and CEO of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp, then sent a text to NFL senior vice president of events Peter O'Reilly: "20K, not bad for a fashion show." There were NFL reps at the uniform unveiling, and they passed info to decision-makers about the event's success. One of those NFL reps told ESPN that the league wants the Nashville event to be the standard for future uniform unveilings.

The uniform unveiling definitely impacted Nashville's chances to host the draft. It soon became a done deal.

According to the NFL, a combined 600,000 people attended the 2019 draft in downtown Nashville. From thousands of decked-out players to even more fans showing their team colors, Broadway in Nashville, Tennessee, was a sea of football lovers, enjoying the first night of the 2019 NFL Draft. Music City rocked through the night with music and entertainment as the top selections were announced.

The 2019 draft will go down as the biggest multi-day event in terms of visitors in Nashville's history, Butch Spyridon, said.
