EAST PROVIDENCE – Whether you’re seeking a casual spot to enjoy a relaxing lunch or family dinner, B. Pinelli’s Restaurant in East Providence is certainly worth a visit.

“As we say in Italian, “Ben venuto alla mi famiglia–welcome to my family,” begins restaurant owner Bill Pinelli, who shares that he has enjoyed 28 years in the hospitality business and formerly owned several restaurants throughout the ocean state.

“We’ve combined all of our flavors into one great restaurant,” he

continues, adding that the bistro offers an expansive menu featuring Italian, Portuguese and Cape Verdean specialties.

“We have some great chefs,” Pinelli observes, noting that in addition to the regular menu, the bistro also offers daily specials so there are always surprises when patrons walk through the door. The menu also includes many gluten-free options.

Dinner selections include starters such as flatbreads and an Italian roulette, featuring eggplant stuffed

Other appetizers include, calamari, clams or mussels zuppa, and a Lil’ Rhody antipasto board that includes sliced meats, select cheeses, marinated olives, Peppadew sweet peppers, flatbread points, and a spread of the day.

Seafood entrees include the alwayspopular Cod Mozambique, a zesty combination of baked cod, flavored with sautéed Spanish onions, roasted red peppers and garlic, and served in a spicy saffron butter sauce over mashed potatoes.

Another crowd pleaser is the scallop risotto, a hearty dish featuring seared George’s Bank scallops served over a classic creamy risotto with roasted red peppers, mushrooms and asparagus.

Twisted Carbonara

“We use only the finest seafood, fresh from the New Bedford docks,” Pinelli shares, adding that another popular menu item highlighting the bounty of the sea is the Pescatore, a taste bud tempting blend of shrimp, scallops, chopped clams and roasted red peppers, prepared in a garlic and Parmesan cream sauce and served over fettuccine.

Patrons fond of “the classics” will enjoy “old school” Italian favorites, such as Mama B’s lasagna; traditional pasta topped with savory sauce and homemade meatballs, and Pasta Bolognese that features a hearty Bolognese meat sauce tossed with fettuccine and finished with Parmesan cheese.

For those patrons with a lighter appetite, the bistro offers a variety of salads and sandwiches, including the Crabby Melt BLT, made with blue lump crab cakes, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and Cajun mayonnaise. Burger fans will enjoy The Smokehouse, a hearty Angus burger topped with melted caramelized onion cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, a sunny side up egg, and Jack Daniels barbeque sauce.

On Tuesdays, families from all over the East Bay gather at B. Pinelli’s for the bistro’s all-you-can-eat family style dinner.

“Mangia, mangia, magnia,” Pinelli laughs, noting that the menu includes fresh salad, pasta, roasted herb chicken, french fries and rolls. The restaurateur adds that children eat free at the bistro every Tuesday and Sunday when they order from the kid’s menu, with the purchase of an adult entrée.

Smokehouse Burger

The bistro has an impressive wine cellar that can comfortably host 70 people, and other rooms that can accommodate large business meetings, funeral collations, bridal showers, wedding anniversary celebrations, birthday parties, and other events.

Pinelli adds that an on-site event coordinator can create an affordable menu to accommodate every type of gathering.

In addition to hosting celebrations, the bistro also offers take-out event catering that can also be delivered by bistro personnel to an off-site location. Selections include a variety of beef and chicken entrees, lasagna, stuffed shells, eggplant parmesan, starches and vegetables, and Portuguese specialties such as Carne Alentejana – cubes of pork and potatoes prepared in a spicy tomato sauce and topped with littlenecks.

No Bake Insanely Rich Chocolate Cake

This is one of the most decadent and ultimate desserts.

Many people hold a special place in their heart for anything chocolate. This cake can be prepared the night before you serve it. And, it is a perfect temptation for the chocolate lover! Just a small piece will satisfy even the biggest fans of chocolate cake. So, for a sweet ending to any party, or to surprise your family with something special and scrumptious; go to your kitchen and you will likely already have all of the ingredients to get it going. It may be rich and caloriefilled, but I promise; it will be worth every bite!

INGREDIENTS:

7 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped 5 tablespoons sugar 2/3 cup whole milk 1 cup (2 sticks), unsalted butter, softened 1 large egg yolk 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted for dusting Fresh whipped cream (optional) Put the chocolate in a medium bowl and set aside. In a small saucepan, combine the milk and 4 tablespoons of the sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved. Stop stirring and cook until bubbles begin to form around the edges of the pan. Remove the pan from the heat.

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar. Gradually whisk half of the hot milk into the yolk mixture. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook, whisking constantly, until it thickens slightly and reaches 180 degrees on a candy thermometer.

Immediately pour the mixture over the chocolate. Whisk until the chocolate is melted. Add the butter, ½ tablespoon at a time, whisking until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth. Whisk in the vanilla.

Oil a 6-inch round cake pan and scrape the batter into it, smoothing the top with a rubber spatula. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and place it in the freezer for at least 6 hour or overnight.

To unmold the cake, carefully immerse the bottom and sides of the pan in hot water for a few seconds. Wipe the bottom and sides dry and unmold the cake onto a serving plate. Decorate the top of the cake by dipping a knife in hot water, wiping it dry, and running it across the surface of the cake in a wave pattern. Lightly dust the top of the cake with cocoa powder. Let the cake stand at room temperature for 45 minutes before serving.

For a special addition, add a dollop of fresh whipped cream to each slice you serve.

Strawberry Cheesecake Cupcakes

Well, strawberry season is here, and there is no better way to celebrate it than to buy or even pick some local, fresh strawberries and whip up something yummy! Of course there are endless strawberry desserts out there and it’s never easy to choose just one. However, these strawberry cheesecake cupcakes are a great choice and perfect for any occasion, especially with Father’s Day around the corner; they are sure to be a hit!

Ingredients: Graham Cracker Crust 18 graham crackers (save at least 2 for decoration) 8 tbsp. room temperature butter Cupcakes 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 12 tbsp. room temperature butter ½ tsp. salt 1 cup of sugar 1 tsp. vanilla ½ cup of sour cream 4 large egg whites 1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries, chopped (plus half a cup for decoration) Cream Cheese Frosting 8-ounce package cream cheese 8 tbsp. butter 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted 1 tsp. vanilla 16 ShopInRI

Directions: Preheat oven to 360 degrees and prepare 10 large or 16 medium cupcake liners.

For the Crust: Crumble crackers, either by crushing them in a large plastic bag with a mallet or other kitchen, or use a food processor. Next, mix butter until it is blended with graham cracker crumbs. Place cracker mix into cupcake liners and press down firmly using your fingers.

In the oven, pre-bake cracker crust for 4 minutes.

For the Cupcakes: Separate the eggs and beat only the whites until fluffy (approx. 3-4 minutes). Set aside. In a large bowl, mix butter and sugar. Next, blend in vanilla. In a smaller bowl, mix together flour, salt and baking soda. Add half of the flour mix to the butter and sugar mix. Then add the sour cream to the mix, and the rest of the dry mix using a hand mixer. Next, add in 1/3 of the egg whites to the batter until combined; then add the chopped strawberries and the rest of the egg whites.

Fill each cupcake liner ¾ full and bake for 20 minutes. Let the cupcakes cool before frosting them.

Frosting: Mix butter, cream cheese and vanilla. While still beating the mixture, add the powdered sugar until it is incorporated.

Decorate each cooled cupcake with frosting, graham cracker crumbs and either whole strawberries or sliced strawberries. Keep stored in the refrigerator.

Cucumber Gazpacho with Apples and Radishes

Ingredients 4 large cucumbers, peeled and cut into large chunks 1 green bell pepper, seeded and cut into chunks ½ small red onion, peeled and sliced Lemon juice, to taste Salt and pepper, to taste 2 radishes-cut into thin slices 1 Macoun apple, cut into thin slices

Scorching hot summer days always have me craving something cold and refreshing for lunch; and nothing is quite as refreshing as a good gazpacho made with fresh, local vegetables. Gazpacho is a chilled soup made from pureed vegetables, and it makes for an amazing lunch on a summer day. Traditionally, a gazpacho is made with tomatoes, and by late summer, Rhode Island has the most amazing heirloom tomatoes; but during the early summer weeks before the heirloom tomatoes are quite ready, I like to make gazpacho from cucumbers. This is an incredibly easy recipe that can be thrown together in a few minutes after a morning spent at the farmers market; making it great for a refreshing afternoon meal.

Preparation Together, puree the cucumber, bell pepper and red onion in a food processor. Add a small amount of salt, pepper and lemon juice and puree again. Taste and adjust seasoning, adding a little at a time until it tastes good to you. To serve, split between four bowls, top with a bit of black pepper and fresh slices of radishes and apples.

Merola DiMaio added that it is not unusual for strangers to become friends over a meal or a drink at the bar.

“It’s just like going to your grandmother’s house,” Merola DiMaio continued. “We’re cooking for you – everything is made with love. And if somebody wants something special, we’ll make it for them, as long as we have the ingredients in-house.”

Their commitment to pleasing their customers extends from the top down and from the front of the house to the back. Strict standards for quality are never compromised.

“Every dish is made to order and prepared with care,” Znuj said. “It’s old school, made the right way. Nothing is pre-made except for our gravy and soups. That allows us to create special dishes and accommodate guests with dietary restrictions.”

With each dish served, Johna’s proves that quality and quantity are not mutually exclusive. They use only the finest ingredients and their sizable portions leave customers fully satisfied. Many of those fine ingredients come from neighboring businesses.

“We keep it all fresh and work with as many local producers as we can.”

Merola DiMaio continued, noting Baffoni’s Poultry Farm, Buono’s Bakery and Fed-Rick Veal Co. as just a few of the local purveyors Johna’s works with on a regular basis.

“It’s important to work with other businesses in Rhode Island and be a part of the community,” she concluded.

Though choosing quality ingredients and offering huge portions may force some restaurants to raise prices beyond reason, Znuj was quick to note that guests will always be able to find Federal Hill dining at Killingly Street prices when they visit Johna’s.

“We’re not here to shake our customers down,” Znuj said. “We want them to be happy with their experience and we want them to come back.”

Notes from the Cooker, Traveler, Master Gardener and Serious Sipper of Creative Cocktails

The classic Sloppy Joe sandwich is easy enough to make from scratch. My version takes on a Mexican twist (hence the name Sloppy JosĂŠ), using seasoned taco meat and a great barbecue sauce. Putting them together with a sprinkling of Mexican cheese on a bun with lettuce and tomato makes for one sloppy but delicious sandwich!

2 cups ketchup 3/4 cup water 6 tablespoons white vinegar 6 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 6 tablespoons brown sugar 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon chili powder 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons black pepper 1 1/2 teaspoons cumin

1 teaspoon granulated garlic 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon crushed pepper flakes 1 teaspoon dried Mexican oregano 1 teaspoon paprika 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 Spanish onion, finely chopped olive oil 2 lbs. grass-fed ground beef

Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer until the flavors have blended, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and cool to room temp. If you store it in an airtight container in the fridge, it'll stay good for a few months.

Combine all the spice ingredients in a bowl.

Saute the onions in a bit of olive oil until translucent. Add the beef and saute until cooked, mixing in the spice mixture a little at a time until you've used it all.

For the sandwich...

Take some of the taco meat and place it in a small non-stick pan and heat on medium. Squirt in as much of the barbecue sauce as you like, mixing thoroughly. Sprinkle some grated Mexican cheese on top. (I like Cotija, which is like a Mexican feta, but a bag of mixed cheeses works great, too.) Mix thoroughly, letting it all melt together into one warm, gooey mess. Throw it on a bun. Add lettuce, tomato, avocado slices, whatever you like!

The Corner Cafe The Corner Cafe is located on Broadway in Newport. You may have to endure a wait, but your experience will be well worth it. As best stated by a restaurant reviewer, “The flavors at Corner Cafe are a cross between that best feeling of your life and paradise. The setting of the cafe is New England charm. The fresh ingredients, flavorful specials, and overall experience are what make this restaurant extremely well known and extra special.

T’s Restaurant T’s Restaurant conveniently located on Park Avenue in Cranston, Post Road in East Greenwich, and Pt. Judith Road in Narragansett hosts a menu of breakfast food that is always made from fresh ingredients, servers that are always smiling, and food that is always abundant. There success is due in part to their motto of “Be brilliant at the basics.” This motto had to be on target since they have been in business for almost 25 years. Originally opened in Cranston in 1982, T’s was a booming restaurant business with great potential. There next move was to East Greenwich in 2007, and to Narragansett in 2012. Throughout the years, these businesses have overcome the economy’s obstacles and come out on the side of success, due in part to their willingness to continue to enhance the menu with new flavors, health conscious offerings, allergy alerts, kids menus that were fun and flavorful and becoming more growth friendly. Eat clean, live lean; that is the motto of Project LeanNation. So what exactly is Project LeanNation you ask? Well, they refer to themselves as a fully prepared macro nutrient balanced meal service, and essentially, a meal program with a meal prep service and a meal prep business. John Grayko owns and oversees all operations at Project LeanNation’s Cranston facility.

He says that the concept was developed about five years ago in upstate New York. It started out with some of John’s friends, and as it grew, John became more affiliated with the business and brought it to RI, where he established the production and corporate location. That was back in July 2014, and at that time, it was just John and a head chef producing food for 29 clients, weekly. Now, almost two years later, they have 24 employees and are serving upwards of 450 clients weekly. The company has experienced tremendous growth, and services the athletic community, as well as the weight management community.

Obviously, the weekly program keeps you on a regimented schedule, and it is for six days and allows for a one-day break from the program to enjoy some of your favorite foods in moderation. The partial week is for those who want to have at least one clean meal each day. Project LeanNation’s meal plans are affordable, and because they are made on location, they don’t have to ship the meals far, allowing them to have lower shipping costs then most meal plan companies. You may also prefer to pick up the meal plans at their facility if that method works better for you. All of the entrees come frozen, and can be heated up via microwave, skillet or oven. When asked about Project LeanNation, John says, “It is a high protein program, which is great for the fitness community to help repairmuscle and help with muscle recovery,

and yet, weight management people also find it beneficial. We are available to help people find a new relationship with food, and also establish some guidelines on how nutrition can become a lifestyle.”

Project LeanNation’s goal is for people to understand nutrition in a different light, and to learn how to balance food in a way that they will feel satisfied and healthier, but still be able to eat the things they would at home (in moderation, of course). With this program, no one will force you to work out, and you should be able to attain results without it.

However, they strongly feel that mild to moderate exercise will provide faster results. John said that the program currently has a lot of clients who are already physically fit, but stick with it because they like the convenience of the meals, and they don’t always have the time to cook a tasty, balanced meal.

Those who are using the gym to shed some pounds along with participating in the program enjoy it because it is exactly what they need to help them get to the weight they want, while always feeling full. John thoroughly enjoys his job and loves that they sell a product that really helps people. Iggy’s Doughboys & Chowder House

‘The Little Clam Shack That Could’

If this were a movie trailer, it would start with the movie trailer guy’s voice intoning, “One man, one clam shack, and a vision.” But life is not like the movies; and so the story of Iggy’s Boardwalk Lobster and Clam House in Oakland Beach is a bit more complex than that.

“I started working when I was 12, with my father, Gaetano,” says David Gravino, who co-owns Iggy’s with his sister, Mary Ann Soares.

Gravino and his father worked together at the current site of the Boardwalk back when it was Gus’. A tiny 400-square foot building, Gus’ was a popular place all summer long for beachgoers and locals. But 400 square feet—that’s tight. When 40 ShopInRI

Gravino’s father and mother, Sally, had the chance to buy the business that included Gus’ and Mrs. Gus’ next door, they took the doughboy and pizza business, and expanded it to a clam shack. But what should they name the new place? Gaetano Gravino’s license plate was “Ig6,” and the name Iggy’s just presented itself. And so, with a name, a sweet location overlooking Greenwich Bay, and great clam cake and doughboy recipes, a local institution was born. Iggy’s Doughboys & Chowder House proved to be an instant favorite. Things were going well when David Gravino was in college at Johnson and Wales, but then his father fell ill. Shortly before Gaetano graduated, Gravino

passed away. Prior to his passing, Gravino asked his son to take over the business after he died. “Gee, I don’t know, Dad,” was David’s answer. Fortunately for the rest of us, he came around to the idea and continued the family business with his sister and mother, buying the buildings that Iggy’s occupied, as well as opening a second location in Narragansett.

Rhode Islanders take their clam cakes and doughboys seriously, and the competition is pretty stiff among the state’s clam shacks and restaurants. But Gravino didn’t start working in the restaurant business at 12 for nothing. He knows his people.

And they

love good food, fresh and simply prepared, at reasonable prices, with efficient, friendly service.

And since 1989, that’s exactly what Iggy’s has given them.

Over time, the family started selling Iggy’s mixes for doughboys and clam fritters, opened the Narragansett location, and renovated and expanded the Oakland Beach site.

They purchased The Beachcomber in Oakland Beach and opened an ice-cream stand. Iggy’s Creamery features 40 flavors of Gifford’s Ice Cream, made by a family business in Maine. (Giffords even makes a special flavor just for Iggy’s — coffee cookie dough.)

The Creamery opened last summer and the lines started to form on day one, at mid-morning; and on any warm day, the business does not let up. Gravino’s invention, the Iggy’s Doughboy Sundae—three scoops of ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce, whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry served atop three warm doughboys-- has been a big hit, for obvious reasons.

At the center of all of this is Iggy’s Boardwalk Lobster and Clam House. Opened a year ago, the Boardwalk is a full-service restaurant that offers indoor and outdoor dining. The exterior is contemporary nautical, with crisp gray and white siding, mahogany accents on the deck, and a boardwalk that leads around back to a deck that overlooks Greenwich Bay and Oakland Beach. The gazebo and deck feature full service and a well-stocked bar. A cocktail and some fresh oysters from the raw bar, or a glass of wine and lobster (you can choose from seven different preparations)—it’s hard to imagine a more pleasant place on a summer afternoon or evening.

The view alone is worth a million bucks.

The views from inside are equally pretty. Each table in the tastefully done interior has a view of the bay; the décor is simple, clean, and comfortable. The menu is priced well and has traditional

Rhode Island seafood and Italian favorites—a real balance of northern and southern Rhode Island cuisines. The food has been receiving super reviews from the press and patrons, and with the outdoor space to set up tents and accommodate large parties and receptions, the Boardwalk has been booking events at a steady rate.

On a recent Saturday morning, Gravino stood on the deck, supervising preparations for the Doughboy Dash, a fundraiser for the A-T Children’s Project that Iggy’s was sponsoring the next day. A huge white tent was being erected; the Governor was expected to attend. Lines were already forming for the Creamery and Chowder House, and staff members were bustling about. “In an hour, we’ll be jammed,” Gravino said, smiling.

Not bad for what used to be a tiny little clam shack on Oakland Beach.

Back in 2013, I was reading an advertisement from Pat Paolino Cruz. She was conducting a search for Rhode Island’s Miss Italia representatives for several age divisions, to showcase an Italian beauty and culture pageant. I thought I would really enjoy receiving this honor, but I had some reservations.

It had been such a long time (since I was a teenager) since I had participated in any type of pageant or modeling experience. As I continued to think

The coronation event took place on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at D’Vine Restaurant (located on Historic Federal Hill) and was hosted by Barbara Morse Silva and Malia Cruz, and the standing Miss RI Teen Italia. All of the contestants were presented with interview questions; and a panel of judges made their determination of the winner based on all of the qualities that represented Italian beauty and culture. It was a beautiful celebration and a great experience. As a result, I was proudly crowned as the first Mrs. RI Italia to represent Italian beauty and culture in the State of Rhode Island. I am so honored to represent my Italian heritage as Rhode Island’s Mrs. Italia because I am an Italian girl who grew up in the Knightsville area of Cranston, where my neighbors were all my relatives, aunts, uncles, cousins, and Nana and Papa DiMuccio, who lived right across the street. Having loving and supportive parents and my Italian grandparents as my neighbors, most certainly shaped and taught me about growing up Italian. The biggest lesson I learned is that Italian life is all about La famiglia, mangiare, e amore! (In English, meaning the family, food and love!)

Several years ago, I was invited to a summer party in Newport. It was an all day affair and lasted into the night. The temperature was extremely hot and although there was a tent, the atrocious humidity overpowered the protection of the tent.

I

was dressed in a wool navy blazer, and a nice coordinating pair of wool slacks. The truth is, I didn’t wear cotton or linen for fear it might wrinkle.

As I arrived at the party, I was immediately uncomfortable because of good old Rhode Island’s oppressive, summertime humidity. Because of the heat, I started to sweat and after awhile, I decided to remove my jacket. I realized that this was a mistake because once I removed my jacket it was obvious that I had a significant amount of sweat that I didn’t want to show the other guests. I decided to tough it out for the rest of the day and put my jacket back on.

For guys who have to wear suits daily, summer can be a great challenge. There are solutions, however; and modern-day technology has made it possible to opt for interesting new fabrics which are comfortable, durable and fashionable.

Many years ago, guys wore poplin or seersucker suits on hot days. At that time, we sold many poplin suits but in this day and age, they appear dated to the younger generation. Additionally, there were a mere three colors available- khaki, tan, and navy. Seersucker suits were only available in navy stripes and tan stripes. There was also the tropical weight suit, a lightweight wool fabric, usually in tan or light grey.

Wakefield, Lots to Celebrate Recently, I have been spending a lot of time in Wakefield. I have to say, I didn’t realize what I’ve been missing. Wakefield is a great, quaint little town, yet so much fun!

Wakefield is a village in the town of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, and the commercial center of the town. Together with the village of Peacedale, it is treated by the U.S. Census as a component of the census-designated place identified as WakefieldPeacedale, Rhode Island.

The Wakefield village center along Main Street, (old Boston Post Road) between Belmont Avenue and Columbia Street, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 as the “Wakefield Historic District. The district is significant for being an early commercial and industrial center.

Wakefield was a focus for settlement due to its location on the Saugatucket River and the old Post Road, which was laid out early in the 18th century. Settlement began in the early 18th century, with establishment of a small mill on the Saugatucket River. A tavern and stagecoach stop was established in 1745 and a snuff mill was built around 1765. The textile industry began to become an important source of economic activity in 1807 when a carding mill was established on the Saugatucket River. By 1822, the village had about 60 residents and consisted of nine houses, a store, the carding mill, a grist mill, a saw mill, and a blacksmith shop. A Baptist church was built in 1830 and an Episcopal church followed in 1840.

The local textile mill continued to operate and expand through the 19th century, but in the mid-century, as nearby Peacedale grew as a manufacturing center and factories. Beginning in the late 1950s, commercial activity in Wakefield migrated away from the central business district to new commercial areas on the periphery of the community. As of 1984, the village was considered the largest shopping area in South County.

A new day and a new age of superhero movies have dawned upon us. Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice, Doctor Strange, X-Men Apocalypse, Deadpool, and Suicide Squad.

Now, one of the most known storylines in the entire Marvel Universe is coming to the big screen. Captain America: Civil War. The movie starts off slow and casual with a hint of mystery.

Captain America (Chris Evans) and his team, Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), are on a hunt for a villainous terrorist by the name of Crossbones (Frank Grillo) who is on an insane rampage to find a biochemical weapon. The team travels to Lagos, Nigeria where Crossbones breaks into the Institute for Infectious Diseases (using a dump truck) to steal the weapon; and the battle ensues. Crossbones escapes with the weapon, but not before he and Captain America fight one on one in an epic battle. Crossbones goes kamikaze and blows himself up, but not before Wanda ejects him into the air, but at a cost. The upper floor of the building explodes, killing innocents.

The group returns to the Avengers complex, where Wanda is consumed with the guilt that she was the one responsible for killing all the people. Steve comforts her, and so does Vision, who has become adorably human-like, caring for Wanda and wearing sweaters. Meanwhile, Tony (Robert Downey JR.) is giving a speech at MIT, where he is approached by a grieving mother whose son was killed in Sokovia. Tony decides that the Avengers need more restraint, so he brings in the Secretary of State, Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt). He shows the Avengers a pact called the “Sokovia Accords”. The treaty states that the Avengers would be under United Nations control and fight for world safety,

only at their direction. The rift grows, and the team becomes divided. Wanda, Steve, Natasha, and Sam don’t want to sign the treaty. But Tony, Rhodes, and Vision do; even Natasha eventually sides with Tony. Steve receives a heart-breaking message that one of his friends has died and leaves.

Natasha goes to the United Nations meeting in Vienna.

While there, she meets the king of Wakanda, T’Chaka ( John Kani) and his son, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman). However, there is a bombing and T’Chaka is killed. T’Challa learns that Bucky (Sebastian Stan) may be responsible. Then, there is a great highway chase scene. Steve and Falcon are captured, but then another ally helps them all escape. Then Steve plans his next move.

Tony confines Wanda to the Avenger compound to “keep her safe” under Vision’s watch. Then Hawkeye ( Jeremy Renner) shows up, saying that “I retire for 5 minutes and everything goes to sh*$”. He convinces Wanda to go with him, and she agrees, overpowering Vision and escaping. The team meets at the Leipzig/Halle Airport and the fight ensues. Along the way, Tony picks up some friends like Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Black Widow, Rhodes, and Vision. Steve, however, collected Wanda, Hawkeye, Bucky, Sam, and newbie Antman (Paul Rudd).

Overall, the movie was amazing. The ending was such a plot twist; I barely expected it. Thankfully, everyone survives.

There were so many awesome cameos and funny jokes (‘Table of one for Tony Stank’) that it was just the perfect amount of jokes and seriousness. Overall, I give the movie a 6 out of 6 diamonds for just being amazing. Rated PG-13 for minor swearing, blood, and violence.

Chiropractors Are Not All The Same!

I recently had the privilege of meeting chiropractor, Dr. Barbara Hess. Let me repeat, privilege!

People have jobs and that’s life.

Most of us have to work. Once in a while you meet someone who really loves what they do and it’s obvious that their passion means more than money. They do it because it’s what they love and/or they want to help people. That’s Dr. Barbara Hess. I met her and instantly sensed that she was compassionate and cares about everyone that walks into her office.

Dr. Hess has been in business since 1993 and calls her practice “Heath Matters” for a reason, because to her, your health matters! In a statement made

by Dr. Hess, “Health Matters is about incorporating a cohesive program that encompasses chiropractic care (passive care) and a patient’s participation (active care). Chiropractic care involves promoting healing on a cellular level with laser therapy, massage therapy addressing the muscles, traction for the neck and back to improve mobility, along with hands on mobilization and manual manipulation/adjustments.

A patient’s active involvement includes performing home exercises targeting their individual needs, as well as supplementation and healthy meal planning that involves 3 decades of metabolic research by Dr. Layman.”

Dr. Hess truly cares about each individual and knows that even though the “medical issue” may be the same by text book for two patients, she understands everybody and every “body” is different. As result, she not only knows how to focus in on the patient’s issue, she is willing to do whatever it takes to help heal the patient.

More about Dr. Hess: Dr. Hess studied at Charles University in Prague, Chez Republic for a diploma in spinal and muscle-skeletal rehabilitation.

As an athlete, she has participated in the Chicago marathon, placing in the top 20%. She also is a recipient of titles in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the all natural body building and physique shows, which required meal and supplementation planning, for ultimate, optimal results. This has allowed her to personally experience, first hand, how to help patients

on all levels, and with conditions such as Parkinson ’s disease, spinal degeneration, motor vehicle and work related injuries, sport injuries, etc. She also compensates for patients who are truly financially destitute, or without insurance to cover chiropractic treatment. She sets aside time to care for every patient and worries about logistics later. Not too many people, let alone doctors will do that.

With the weather getting warmer, why keep your workout inside?

Let’s take it to the beach!

Enjoy this beach workout below.

WARM-UP A warm up is necessary to increase blood flow and oxygen to the muscles. This increases flexibility, decreases injury, and decreases fatigue. Increase water intake when working out in the sun.

10-20 reps each Push-ups Squat to Stand Lateral Lunge Side Plank 30 sec each Hip Bridge 30 sec each STRENGTH TRAINING All these exercises will provide a different stimulus to your muscles. This workout will definitely keep your strength levels and fitness tuned until you get back into the gym.

BWT Exercises: When finished, rest for two minutes and then repeat series.

Squats 1x20 Lunges 1x10 each leg Sit-up 1x40 Close Grip Push-up 1x10 Toe Raises 1x20 Reverse Lunges 1x20 Scissor Kicks 1x40 Supermans 1x20 Single Leg Hip Extensions 2x10 CONDITIONING The sand provides an unstable surface which will challenge your nervous system. You will feel the added difficulty in the first couple of reps.

Option 1: 1) Sprint 5 yards in sand then back to start, then 10 yards, then 15 covering 60 yards total. Try to do this in less than 20 seconds 2-3 reps 2) Repeat -this time back peddling in between sprints.

Example: sprint 5 yards and back peddle back, etc. 2-3 reps 3) Repeat-this time shuffling between sprints.

Option 2: Do these drills in waist deep water for 20-30 yards each. Repeat when finished.

1) High knee run. 2-3 sets 2) Butt Kicks. 2-3 sets 3) Squat jumps 10-20 reps 4) Backwards run 2-3 sets 5) Lateral Shuffle 2-3 sets Remember to cool down by ending this with a nice walk on the beach.

For The Love Of The Run

Geoff ’s Story:

Last month I wrote an article on how to become a runner. Anyone can be a runner. This article is about runner Geoff Smith, two- time Boston Marathon champion.

If you’ve physically done the training, if you’ve mentally done the training, you ARE ready and nothing will stop you. That’s how Geoff Smith thinks and was thinking when running the Boston Marathon to victory.

Geoff ’s career, like many, was filled with highs and lows; yet he’s one of

Geoff earned a heartbreaking second place at the finish line after leading the 1983 New York City Marathon for 26 miles, in his first attempt at the marathon distance ( 2:09:08 which was a world record time for a debut marathon at the time). This resulted in Geoff coming back to Providence College and training harder for his first Boston Marathon the following spring, which would also act as his Olympic trial for the British Olympic team. What originally brought him to Providence was a 10 year firefighter career in Liverpool, and a dislike for his schooling.

Geoff was fortunate to be invited to study at Providence College on a sports scholarship. So at the age of 26, he found himself in Providence Rhode Island. He went on to enjoy his time at PC and graduated with a degree in management and a Mas-

ters Degree in Business Administration. He has remained in Southern New England and raised his family here, working as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch, as well as teaching special needs students and then working full time as a race director.

Nothing less than victory would secure his place for the Olympic Marathon in LA in 1984. On a cold, wet, and windy day, he defied the odds and ran solo from Hopkinton to Boston, winning by 4 1/2 minutes. After this win, Geoff was a favorite to win the marathon event at the Olympics.

Geoff ’s dream was shattered six days before the marathon when he became ill and during the race he had to drop out at the half way point. Geoff walked way disappointed and upset, yet he focused his energy not on feeling sorry for himself, but on his next goal of defending Boston. The Boston Marathon was still fighting the rest of the world about prize money and professional athletes. While the rest of Geoff ’s peers turned up their noses at Boston and went to other

657 North Main St. Providence RI 02904 races that paid them, Geoff stood firm and chose to run Boston and break the world record. His training was going well and was indicating a very fast time. In the best shape of his life, Geoff stood on the line with the only competition being the clock.

He went directly to the lead on that very hot and humid afternoon in 1985. The world was witness to the most dramatic event as he began to cramp up after Heartbreak Hill. He cramped so much so he had to walk, however; his time was so fast for the first 20 miles that even though he walked, jogged and slowly worked his way back to a run, he defended his victory and won the Boston Marathon for the second time!

At the time he was ranked as one of the top 5 marathon runners in the world. Unfortunately, Geoff then had a bad fall while training in 1990 for the USA marathon championships in preparation for the US Olympic marathon trials; and this was a career ending injury. The doctors told him “Your running days are over.

Your hip is bone on bone and in an advanced state of arthritis”. This dire prognosis, not being able to run, was dealt with by walking away from running almost completely. A few years ago, after 20 years and 2 hip replacements, Geoff realized he still missed running, and decided to take a leap of faith and come back to the sport he loved and missed so much. He started to organize road races and as a result, he started to run again. The feeling, the emotions and the excitement were stronger than ever. His belief is that you don’t realize how much you missed something that has been abruptly taken away; and with

Geoff ’s type of determination you can find it again. Maybe you find it in different way but you find it. If you participate in one of Geoff ’s races, you will usually see him laughing and cheering on runners, and often times jumping into the race next to you!

On June 10th, Geoff will be co-directing a race in Quonset, Rhode Island.

This is a 4 miler you can read about at www.airshowrun.com. He also has a half marathon series in New England, entitled the New England Half Marathon Grand Prix. Let me add; these races are directed by two of the most experienced runners and race directors in our area-Charles Breagy and Geoff Smith.

Geoff ’s next half marathon race, part of the Grand Prix series, is the Narragansett Bay half marathon on July 24th. Last year, Amby Burfoot, another Boston Marathon Champion ran; and we hope to see him again.

Geoff will be running and is bringing in one of his best friends, former marathon world record holder, Steve Jones, a New York, London, Chicago and Toronto marathon champion.

the american flag In honor of Flag Day on June 14th, I wanted to share the meaning and some history of the American Flag. For more than 200 years, starting on January 1, 1776, the American Flag has been the symbol of our great nation’s strength and unity. It’s been a source of inspiration and pride for all Americans.

The flag consists of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with six white. The stripes represent the thirteen colonies, the stars represent the 50 states and the colors are symbolic as well: “White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valour, Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.”

The American Flag has so much meaning. I always knew when a veteran passes, a flag is respectfully folded in memory of their sacrifice and rested on the casket. What I did not know was that each fold has its own important significance.

The first fold is a symbol of life.

The second fold is a symbol of belief in eternal life.

The third fold is in honor and remembrance of past veterans.

The fourth fold serves as a reminder of our weaker nature and a trust in God. The fifth fold is a tribute to our country.

The sixth fold symbolizing where our hearts lie the place to which we pledge allegiance.

The seventh fold is a tribute to the armed forces.

The eighth fold is a memorial to the one who entered into the shadow of death so we might see the light of day; also; it is in honor of our mothers.

The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood.

The eleventh fold, for those of the Jewish faith, symbolizes the lower portion of the seal of Kings Solomon and David.

The twelfth fold serves as an emblem of eternal life for Christians, and glorifies the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The flag’s history tells the story of America itself. It represents freedom, dignity, and the true meaning of being an American. It has been with us and continues to be with us through our war times, but also through our times of joys and triumphs. The flag has been through many changes. It took from January 1, 1776 to August 21, 1960 to appear as it does today.

There are still questions and myths about the flag. For instance who really designed the flag? Was it Betsy Ross?

He also said that most of the workers will come from a Cranston office for which the lease expires in 2018, and that the bank plans to keep its headquarters at a downtown Providence building. Van Saun says Citizens chose not to renew its lease at its Cranston offices, which is up in 2018.

“That facility was going to need a lot of work to suit our future needs,” Van Saun told Eyewitness News after the announcement.

Van Saun said. “And I think there’s potentially a bit of a backlash when people see that take place.” Van Saun added that the company did not consider leaving Rhode Island.

Governor Gina Raimondo supported Citizens’ decision to build in Johnston and was joined by Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena and a host of other elected officials in commending the announcement. Raimondo also said that the state’s Commerce Corporation did not offer any tax incentives to Citizens Bank.

Polisena says the city is offering Citizens Bank a 20year property tax stabilization agreement, the details of which Mayor Polisena would not disclose until the deal is finalized. “It’s advantageous to Citizens, and it’s very advantageous to the town of Johnston,” Polisena said.

Polisena added that property values in the area should increase with Citizens Bank in town, and local businesses will benefit from the surge of employees working there.

He also praised the construction jobs that will come once ground breaks on the project later this year. “We have a lot of working class people in the town in the construction industry, and it’s going to put them to work,” Polisena said.

The construction company contracted to construct the campus said there would be hundreds of workers on the site.

Robert Coupe, the Director of Administration for the City of Cranston, said city officials tried to persuade Citizens Bank to stay in the city in talks several months ago. “Unfortunately we simply could not offer the space and setting that they were seeking,” Coupe said in an email. He added that the new facility was still close enough to Cranston for employees to visit restaurants and stores there. “With thousands more employees located so close by, this move may have a significant positive economic impact on Cranston,” Coupe said. He said the city is now working with the owner of the space currently housing Citizens Bank to find a new use.

The bank said its headquarters will remain in downtown Providence. Citizens has about 5,300 total employees in Rhode Island, including workers at branch locations.

Don’t Keep Family in the Dark about Your Plans You might work diligently at building a financial roadmap for your retirement years and a comprehensive estate plan. But you can’t just create these strategies – you also have to communicate them. Specifically, you need to inform your spouse and your grown children what you have in mind for the future – because the more they know, the fewer the surprises that await them down the road.

Let’s start with your spouse. Ideally, of course, you and your spouse should have already communicated about your respective ideas for retirement and have come to an agreement on the big issues, such as when you both plan to retire, where you’ll live during retirement, and what you want to do as retirees (volunteer, travel, work part time and so on).

But what you both might have let slip through the cracks are the important specifics related to financing your retirement. You’ll need to answer several questions, including these: • When will you each start taking Social Security?

• Are there strategies for maximizing both of your Social Security payments?

Just A Dog? Just An Animal?

I read the following article recently and it reminded me how many times I’ve said, “it’s NOT just a dog”.

The article read: “From time to time people tell me, “Lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or, “That’s a lot of money for just a dog.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, time spent, or costs involved for “just a dog.” Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.” Many hours have passed with my only company being “just a dog”, and not once have I felt slighted. Some of my saddest moments were brought about by “just a dog”. In those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a dog” provided comfort and purpose to overcome the day.

If you too, think it’s “just a dog”, you will probably understand phrases like “just a friend”, “just a sunrise”, or “just a promise”. “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of “just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look lovingly to the future.

For me and folks like me, it’s not “just a dog”. It’s an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday people can understand it’s not “just a dog”. It’s what gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a man or woman”.

So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog”, smile, because they “Just Don’t Understand”.

Every living being has a purpose here and as I’ve mentioned in past articles, pets are so much smarter than we give them credit. They may not speak our language but they communicate better than most human beings.

Think about this: When the tsunami hit Japan and killed 19,000 people, how did the animals know to take higher ground before it ever

hit? They have an intuition and intelligence that we as humans don’t even have. So no, it’s not “just an animal”. I think people often forget how pets and animals contribute so much to our lives. Whether it’s food on your table or a companion to come home to, they all have a purpose.

These babies have souls just like you and I and should be treated with nothing less than the utmost respect.

I understand not everyone is an animal lover, but that doesn’t make it okay to harm or disregard them as trash.

You don’t have to love them but at least respect them. It breaks my heart to see road kill or hear people say “that’s the cycle of life”. No; that is not the cycle of life. An animal killing another animal for survival, as much as it breaks my heart, is the cycle of life. A car hitting an animal is not the cycle of life. We are building on their land and they don’t know where else to go. If we could all just slow down just a little bit, I believe a lot of unnecessary road kill would be avoided. I also know not everyone is going to agree with my stand on this but if we don’t speak up as humans and have a voice for them, nothing will change. Animal cruelty is unacceptable and if it were up to me, the punishment would match the crime. If you are a pet owner, please give your baby an extra hug tonight for all the unfortunate babies that don’t have wonderful homes or wonderful pet owners to care for them.

I wrote this poem a few years ago for someone very special and I want to share it: I will stand by you in prosperity and poverty.

I will sleep on cold ground just to be by your side.

I will kiss the hand that feeds me or the hand that has no food.

I ask no higher privilege than to accompany you, guard you, and love you.

What’s Up on Thayer Street ...

Wheeler School, Johnson & Whales University, and the RI School of Design (RISD). Brown’s graduate housing and some classroom buildings are situated on Thayer Street.

Students from the area schools congregate on this funky street that boasts vintage clothing shops, bookstores, music shops and cafes. You will find any type of food that you can imagine on and around Thayer Street. For the shoppers, there are many quirky boutiques with unique gadgets and gifts.

In 1874, Mayor Thomas Doyle was searching for an architect to design a building to house what is now Providence’s City Hall. At that time, local government functioned informally, therefore; a building to house government offices didn’t exist. It was said that early town meetings were held under a sycamore tree near the present corner of College and South Main streets. Sometime later, the Quaker Meeting House or private homes were used for meetings. In 1731 a two-story town meeting house was built on Meeting Street, just off Benefit Street, but in December 1758 it burned to the ground. Mayor Doyle was determined to make a change.

Now what does this have to do with Thayer Street?

Well, in order to determine who would construct what he had envisioned, Mayor Doyle held a design competition. Samuel J. F. Thayer, a Boston native, submitted his design, which was one of twenty-one sets of drawings submitted to the city. Based on his outstanding renaissance design, Thayer’s “Blue Wafer” plan was chosen, he was awarded the $1,000 first prize, the opportunity to design the new city hall, and ultimately had his name chosen as the name of the street where the original government building was located, thus, the name Thayer Street.

Today, Thayer Street in the College Hill area of the East Side of Providence, is a popular, lively destination for students of the area’s nearby schools of Brown University, Moses Brown School, Hope High School,

Thayer Street is always full of energy and enthusiasm.

You can get a cup of coffee and window shop, or just walk around and ”people watch”. It is nice to see the wide array of ethnic diversity, and you may even witness a sorority pledging new women, or a frat singing as they walk down the street. Oh, to be in college again, good times!

There is also the popular and very busy Brown Book store where you can spend hours. And for those who are thrifty, or want to purchase something vintage, the Army/Navy Store is for you. And, for those who like unique and colorful, a must stop is Spectrum India.

Thayer Street is almost five blocks long, and much of that is made up of cafes, coffee shops and restaurants.

Students from all parts of the world come to study at the area universities so there are restaurants there that offer food from almost every country, and from all ethnicities, such as Indian, Lebanese, Italian, Greek, Poland, Mediterranean, Chinese, and Pizza places, to French bakeries, coffee shops, and more.

A stroll along Thayer Street is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening in Providence. In the evening, you will enjoy the trendy bars, or maybe even take in a movie at the historic Avon Cinema theatre that’s been there since 1938. So, if you feel like enjoying a nice walk to a place that overlooks the city of Providence, take a ride to Thayer Street and feel the positive vibes from the people and the surroundings.

Coming to Rhode Island Lincoln Woods Restoration

Named after the 16th President of the United States, Lincoln Woods was acquired by purchase, gift, and condemnation of farmland and woodlots of the Olney, Arnold, Comstock, and Mitchell families of the Salyersville, Lonsdale, and Quinsnicket areas of Lincoln in 1909.

Nestled between routes 146 and routes 123 , Lincoln Woods State Park is one

of Blackstone Valley’s great treasures. A short ride from Providence, Pawtucket, and Cumberland, it is a popular get away for northeastern Rhode Islanders.

Visitors have come to enjoy swimming at the fresh water beach, trout fishing, playing ball, hiking, jogging, horseback riding, or just relaxing under a shade tree.

Lincoln Woods State Park, with nearly 1 million in visitors each year, will receive a new “green” pavilion as part of a $5.3 million project. According to

the RI Department of Environmental Management, the project will modernize facilities and visitor amenities at Lincoln Woods beach, while also improving energy efficiency and enhancing water quality in the lake. Three new, handicapped-accessible buildings, connected by a central plaza, will be constructed. The buildings will house concessions, office space, restroom and shower facilities, and a nature center for

educational programming.

US Senator Jack Read stated, “The beach will always be the main attraction, but once it is completed, this new facility will really enhance the visitor experience. I was pleased to work with the National Park Service to direct $1.7 million in federal funding to help make this restoration project a reality. The new pavilion offers a major upgrade in both aesthetic and practical terms. It will enhance recreational, educational and

ecological opportunities here at the park and be a model for sustainability”.

The new development is being designed by Providence-based Brewster Thornton Group Architects and will be constructed by Ahlborg Construction Corp. of Warwick. It is being funded through the National Park Service Land and Water Conservation Fund ($1.7 million) and Rhode Island Capital Program funds totaling $3.6 million.

The beach will be open throughout 2016, but the swimming area will be restricted and visitor facilities at the beach will be limited. Portable restrooms will be installed for public use; concessions, showers and changing facilities will be closed. The project is expected to be completed by the start of the 2017 beach season.

“Lincoln Woods continues to fulfill its seminal purpose of providing working families with a peaceful, inviting place to unwind,” DEM Director Janet L. Coit said. “It is a jewel among our natural areas in Rhode Island and unmatched in its appeal to a great diversity of people and activities. Our parks and beaches in Rhode Island are world-class destinations, and they are a special part of our social fabric. By continuing to invest in them, we ensure they will remain beautiful resources for generations to come.”

Other features of the project include: • New facilities connected to local water and sewer systems, eliminating the need for the public drinking water well and septic system currently used • The facilities’ footprint and the swimming area shift east, moving the beach away from wetlands and reducing impacts to water quality • The building design uses a combination of passive ventilation and daylighting to minimize the need for cooling and heating.

• The use of efficient mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems to conserve natural resources • Solar energy used for heating water in key areas, including the main building and in public showers, to reduce energy consumption of park operations • The landscape design includes native, non-invasive species that require minimal irrigation • The new, expanded parking area is made of porous asphalt; bike racks also were added to promote more active forms of transportation.
