Tommy’s -Iconic Pizz Written By: Patrick Burke

For former Providence residents and even a former president of the United States, there is nothing like Tommy’s Pizza and Tommy’s Italian Food. It’s known by one name; there are two unique locations in Providence and Cranston, and third-generation owner Tom Sacco is proud to say he has many third and fourth generation customers – and there are even a few famous ones.

“Tommy’s Fine Italian Food isn’t just a pizzeria; it is a full restaurant that serves pizza,” Sacco explained. “The original Tommy’s is a pizza parlor, an old-school, local pizzeria, and that’s all it will ever be. I’m not going to change it. The décor and everything will stay the same.”

In 1955, Thomas Sacco opened the classic Tommy’s Pizza, a little brick pizza joint out of the basement of his building at 936 Chalkstone Avenue – some booths, a juke box, stacked pizza boxes and delightful aromas.

“The basement was a deli he turned into a pizzeria,” Sacco said. “It was his house; he lived upstairs, and he made the downstairs into the pizzeria. We’re probably the longest owned pizza restaurant in the state to be in the same family. It’s been sixty years; we haven’t changed hands.”

Continuing and growing the family business, original Tommy’s grandson, Tom Sacco, opened Tommy’s II in 2009 on Oaklawn Avenue in Cranston, looking to have a restaurant closer to his new home in Cranston. While both

US Airlines to Start Scheduled Flights to Cuba

Six airlines won permission to resume scheduled commercial air service from the US to Cuba for the first time in more than five decades. The airlines American, Frontier, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest, and Sun Country were approved by the Department of Transportation for a total of 155 roundtrip flights per week. They’ll fly from five US cities to nine cities in Cuba other than Havana. Tommy’s -Iconic Pizza & Italian Cuisine Written By: Patrick Burke

For former Providence residents and even a former president of the United States, there is nothing like Tommy’s Pizza and Tommy’s Italian Food. It’s known by one name; there are two unique locations in Providence and Cranston, and third-generation owner Tom Sacco is proud to say he has many third and fourth generation customers – and there are even a few famous ones.

“Tommy’s Fine Italian Food isn’t just a pizzeria; it is a full restaurant that serves pizza,” Sacco explained. “The original Tommy’s is a pizza parlor, an old-school, local pizzeria, and that’s all it will ever be. I’m not going to change it. The décor and everything will stay the same.”

In 1955, Thomas Sacco opened the classic Tommy’s Pizza, a little brick pizza joint out of the basement of his building at 936 Chalkstone Avenue – some booths, a juke box, stacked pizza boxes and delightful aromas.

“The basement was a deli he turned into a pizzeria,” Sacco said. “It was his house; he lived upstairs, and he made the downstairs into the pizzeria. We’re probably the longest owned pizza restaurant in the state to be in the same family. It’s been sixty years; we haven’t changed hands.”

Continuing and growing the family business, original Tommy’s grandson, Tom Sacco, opened Tommy’s II in 2009 on Oaklawn Avenue in Cranston, looking to have a restaurant closer to his new home in Cranston. While both

locations offer the same classic pizza, pies, grinders and appetizers, Tommy’s II has an expanded dining area and a more extensive menu that gives Sacco a way to venture into various Italian foods with the same fine touch.

The timeless décor of Providence has a charm for many who grew up at that location; but the Cranston spot has its own charm to offer.

One thing about Cranston, Sacco said, “A lot of people that moved out of the area from the Providence

location, moved to the outskirts; and they come to this location; and they see people that they grew up with from the neighborhood at the new location. It’s a homecoming – they’re coming from Coventry, Scituate, North Kingstown, wherever, and they don’t drive to Providence much anymore.

They meet each other here by accident.”

One lifetime customer asked Sacco for some empty boxes to fill with flowers for a cousin’s funeral – the two had shared Tommy’s pizza before one had moved and eventually passed away.

“I always say, Tommy said, the first time you come in here, you come in here as a guest, second time you come in as a friend. I’m proud of my servers, my staff. Everybody’s personable. It doesn’t take long for my staff to learn your name, who you are and what you like.”

“We have a lot of regular guests,” Sacco said.

He then added, “We also have frequent visitors. They are just as big a part of the dining experience as my staff. My regulars recognize new guests just like I do. It’s a ‘Cheers’ atmosphere. Everyone knows each other’s names and what they order. Sometimes regulars share a pizza or appetizers. Single or widowed guests have somewhere to come and feel comfortable dining on their own. They are not dining alone.”

Of all the satisfied customers, Frank Sinatra and former President Bill Clinton are the most famous. Sinatra would get Tommy’s deliveries to the Providence Performing Arts Center when he was in town; and, 42nd President Bill Clinton

stopped by the Tommy’s location in Cranston during the primary season.

House Speaker Nicholas A. Mattiello frequents the Cranston restaurant and has set up a luncheon. Clinton went vegan in 2010 after chest surgery; but he enjoyed a spread with Mattiello and Governor Gina Raimondo.

“That was awesome,” Sacco said. “My wife looked up what he eats, and we offered him some vegetarian things we make.”

“We made him eggplant tapenade, mushroom crostini, and stuffed artichokes,” Sacco continued.

He had some fried calamari – he told Governor Raimondo it was the best he ever had. We made him some pizza without cheese. He also had broccoli pizza, spinach pizza and eggplant.

That’s all stuff that we normally offer.”

With fancy dough-twisting and marinara-slinging styles coming and going, Tommy’s has remained steady and relevant with the same recipes – a balanced mix of herbs and spices into an unforgettable sauce, pepperonis that curl into cups, the dough that stays chewy with the crust cooked to a crisp bottom. As stated on the menu, ‘Tommy’s is known for the original tomato pie. Adding cheese came along the way.’ For Rhode Island’s red sauce only crowd, or those who want cheese by the fistfuls, toppings are spread right to the crust’s edge and can be added to the minds limit and content.

“We started with the tomato pie,” Sacco said. “Cheese is an item. Years ago my grandfather didn’t put cheese on the pizzas – that came later on. Most of the old places made pizza with just tomato sauce, it was called tomato pie. That was the way it was a billion years ago.”

“Guys like us, Caserta’s, Twins, we’re Italian. Pizza is an Italian thing. We do things the Italian way,” Sacco said.

“Everyone has their different spin on making pizza. This isn’t the same way they make pizza in Naples. In Naples, they use a wood fire, cook at 1100 degrees, with thin, thin dough; and it cooks in like four minutes. We use a lower heat, bake them in pans, and they cook slower than the Naples-style. My grandfather learned from a guy that was a baker; and he showed my grandfather how to make pizza. The guy was from Italy; and the way he showed my grandfather is the way I learned.”

Tommy’s pizzas come in formidable 12-inch round cuts or large 12-by18 inch rectangles cut into 12 slices.

Besides cheese, toppings include pepperoni, mushrooms, peppers, onions, olives, and anchovies, as well as bacon, ham, sausage, meatballs, hot pepper rings, sliced tomatoes, Kalamata olives, artichokes, and pineapple. The grinders are large and filling, the soups hearty and homemade. Claimed originators of eggplant and broccoli pies, both locations also offer spinach pies and other fillings rolled in their famous dough.

Tommy’s in Cranston has moved far beyond pizza, into all kinds of Italian-inspired culinary delights, from Gnocchi Antonio to Tommy’s Combo (sausage, meatballs, and peppers in any pasta). There’s chicken, eggplant and fish entrees baked, simmered, sautéed and/or sauced in heaping proportions with recognizable Italian styles pizzaiola, marsala, spezzatino, parmigiana.

Appetizers include cannellini bruschetta, fried smelts, and

eggplant rollatini. The physical space inside is much larger than Providence and there are big tables for family dining. There’s also a much more extensive beer and wine list.

“Everything is made to order,” Sacco said.

“We use nothing but the finest ingredients and get daily deliveries from local vendors.”

Sacco offered a few favorite menu options such as veal spezzatino, which is veal medallions cooked in a tomato sauce with peas and mushrooms. Everybody brags about how fork tender the veal is, and how it’s the best they’ve had since their grandmother.”

As is in the Ocean State, Tommy’s noted that Cranston offers a selection of “only the freshest fish” from linguini pescatore (scallops, shrimp and calamari sautéed in a red or white sauce) to cod francaise (egg-battered, pan-fried cod in white wine, lemon-butter sauce). to fish and chips and baked cod.

“All of our soups are made in-house, fresh daily,” Sacco said as an enticing bowl of chicken soup came out from the kitchen for a customer. “We have chicken soup every day; escarole and beans Tuesday, Tuscan white bean soup on Wednesday, pasta fagioli on Thursday, fish soup on Friday, and lentil soup on the weekend.”

It smelled so delicious; I couldn’t help but try the chicken soup myself. Tommy earned himself another frequent guest.

As we approach the holiday where friends and family time reign supreme let’s talk about what makes all of that family time a bit more bearable: the wine. It can make the lamest of dad jokes a tad bit funnier, your older, inappropriate uncle’s political views a bit more tolerable and the half rate fireworks display your neighbors are putting on seem like the good old college days when the “good stuff ” started to kick in. Here are some warm weather winners to help keep you cool and, more importantly, buzzed throughout the onslaught of Independence Day related shenanigans you’ll be committing to soon.

Prosit Rose [Italy, Sparkling] is a great example of a summer sparkler that doesn’t break the bank, yet over delivers in terms of quality. Coming in at around $12, the Prosit Rose has a complexity you’d expect to find with a wine two to three times the price point. Intense notes of strawberry and puckery pomegranate are complimented by creamy undertones of melon and honeysuckle with a hint of black pepper on the finish to balance out the fruit forwardness of this almost-neon pink hued beauty. All in all this is a great pick for those of you who, like me, have Frasier taste but are on a Roseanne budget.

In terms of white wines, Vinho Verde is always a wise choice for crowd pleasers and Casal Garcia [Portugal] makes a killer one you can be sure is a safe bet. Slightly effervescent and fruit forward in nature, this style of Portuguese wine is a great go to for the hot summer days and warm nights. Crisp, refreshing and loaded with juicy flavors of tart green Granny Smith apple, honeydew melon and a lemon/lime zestyness that’ll keep you coming back for more. With a price point clocking in at well under $10, you’ll be able to grab this style of summery wine by the case load.

Truth be told, Fourth of July is always bittersweet for me.

It seems to be the apex of summer, ushering in with it the beginning of the end of the season that makes these fun and flirty wines so desirable!

Chicken Croquettes with Sweet Corn Puree

These croquettes are a great summer dish. They’re light, making them perfect for lunch on a sunny day, and both the puree and the croquette mixture can be made ahead of time, so they’re easy and quick to put together. It’s important to use the dark meat of the chicken in this recipe, because the white meat won’t become tender and shred easily when braised.

Ingredients 3 ears sweet corn, peeled and kernels cut away from cob 1 cup heavy cream 2 lb boneless chicken legs 2 eggs 1 cup breadcrumbs 2 cups chicken stock 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar Oil, for cooking Salt and pepper, to taste 18 ShopInRI

To make the puree, combine the sweet corn and cream in a saucepan. Season with salt and pepper and bring to a simmer. Cook 7-10 minutes, until corn is tender. Remove the corn from the cream and transfer to a blender. Blend, slowly adding just enough cream to make the puree come together. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

To make the croquettes, heat a large, deep pan with a small amount of oil in it.

Sautee the chicken until browned, then add the stock and vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a bare simmer and cover. Cook the chicken for 1 hour, until it is very tender. Remove the chicken from the liquid and allow to cool, then shred it with two forks or your hands. In a large bowl, combine the chicken, eggs and breadcrumbs and mix well. Heat a sautee pan with a small amount of oil in it. Using your hands, shape the chicken mixture into croquettes and cook them, in batches, until they are browned on both sides. To serve, heat the puree in a small sauce pan until hot, then split the puree and croquettes between four plates.

Once Upon A Memory

Rocky Point Clam Shack Once upon a time, there was an amusement park in Rhode Island called Rocky Point. It was a special place, a place where memories were made. For 160 years, summers in Rhode Island included a trip to Rocky Point to ride the ferris wheel under the stars, to win a prize in the shooting gallery, and to enjoy a delicious seafood meal at long tables in the Shore Dinner Hall.

Closed since 1996, Rocky Point is gone, but far from forgotten.

With its own Facebook page and thousands of “likes”, Rocky Point, to quote resident expert 22 ShopInRI

David Cascioli, is “very much in the memory of Rhode Islanders.”

Opened in 1840 by Captain William Winslow, the place which became the amusement park, was at first a simple grassy park where Captain Winslow would offer his passengers a Sunday outing. It was a nice breezy spot for folks to come ashore, stretch their legs and picnic. Within seven years, the Captain added various attractions and restaurants that served clam cakes, red chowder (often called Rhode Island chowder),

and steamers: homespun fare that was appreciated by locals and tourists. Eventually, the park spread over 80 acres and became Rocky Point Amusement Park, featuring roller coasters, kiddie rides, and a large dining hall, that seated 2500 guests and served a family-style allyou-could-eat traditional shore dinner--chowder, steamers, clam cakes, fish, corn, watermelon, and Indian pudding. “The shore dinner hall built its reputation on red clam chowder and clam cakes,” says Cascioli. And they served up a lot of them. There

were take-out windows too, that sold chowder, clam cakes and soft drinks. Summer after summer, the business was incredibly busy, the park wildly popular. By the turn of the 20th century, Rocky Point had become legendary, and secured a place in the firmament of famous amusement parks. Until it closed in 1996, it was the second oldest amusement park in the country.

David Cascioli remembers the heyday of Rocky Point well—he was general manager for years, and started working there in 1974. The place was a little worn around the edges and attendance was slipping in ’74 so Cascioli took a risk and started Friday night specials, featuring a concert series that included local talent like Steve Smith and the Nakeds (or Naked Truth, as they used to be called), and headline acts like Kenny Loggins, The Fixx, A Flock of Seagulls, AC/DC, and Orleans, a one-hit wonder band that happened to have Boston as its opening act. The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane’s Addiction

played there too, and balanced by popular cover bands like Blushing Brides and Physical Graffiti, the series, along with cosmetic updates to the amusement park, helped increase attendance four-fold over the next 20 years.

And so Rocky Point continued, serving up shore dinners and entertaining Rhode Islanders on hot summer days and nights. “We weren’t a Disneyland or a Six Flags with a new roller coaster every year,” says Cascioli, “But we gave the people a reason to come back.”

And that’s just what the owners of the Rocky Point Clam Shack are doing now. Realizing the void left in the hearts of many Rhode Islanders by the closing of beloved Rocky Point, they bought the rights to the name and logo, and opened up a replica of the clam shack that was at the amusement park in its heyday. There are vintage photos of Rocky Point attractions, seats from some of the rides and signage from the old park. In addition to clam cakes, doughboys,

and chowder, the menu at Rocky Point Clam Shack offers seafood items, including fish and chips, hot lobster rolls, and scallop rolls, as well as Rhode Island delicacies, such as fried wholebellies, stuffies, saugies, Del’s Lemonade, and coffee milk.

The business has been thriving, sort of like Captain Winslow’s early days at old Rocky Point.

People bring their lawn chairs and sit in the parking lot, eating clam cakes and drinking lemonade under the replica Rocky Point sign. Cascioli observes, “In the state of Rhode Island, Rocky Point Amusement Park does not die.”

The nostalgia factor is increased on Fridays, which is vintage car night, complete with a DJ spinning classic rock and pop tunes, and prizes. And if you want to relive the olden days, you can take your stuffies and Del’s down the road to Rocky Point State Park, where the amusement park was leveled and a state park created. With grassy areas and paths, it’s a nice place to stretch your legs and picnic.

PEACH ICE CREAM

4 lbs. ripe peaches

3 large egg yolks

2 cups whole milk

1 ¼ cups sugar

2 cups heavy cream

1 teaspoon almond extract

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Using a wire skimmer and working in batches, dip the peaches into the water for 20 seconds then transfer to a bowl of ice water to cool briefly. Drain and peel. Cut the peaches in half and remove the pits. Chop the peaches coarsely and put them in a large glass bowl. Sprinkle with ¼ cup of the sugar, stir and let stand for 1 hour.

Meanwhile, prepare the custard. In a medium bowl, beat the egg yolks until pale in color, 3 to 4 minutes. Set aside.

In a heavy, medium saucepan, combine the cream, milk, and the remaining 1 cup sugar.

Cook over medium heat, whisking until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is warm.

Whisk a small amount of the warm cream mixture into the beaten egg yolks, then whisk in about ½ cup more. Gradually whisk in the remaining cream mixture in a slow stream. Pour the mixture back into the pan and cook over medium heat, stirring with a rubber spatula to scrape the bottom and sides of the pan until the custard is thick enough to coat the back of the spatula (about 5 minutes). Remove from the heat and add the almond extract. Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl. Let cool to room temperature then stir in the peaches.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 8 hours. Freeze in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Summertime Cucumber & Watermelon Salad

Nothing says summer like watermelon! It’s such a refreshing fruit, and is perfect on a warm day. It’s also a great item to pair up with other foods and even herbs as well. This recipe makes a delicious side dish for a party or cookout, or to have with your meal. It’s not too heavy, and is loaded with lots of fresh ingredients, which all have beneficial properties and are low in calories too. Cucumbers, watermelon, scallions and herbs all are healthy choices to add into any dish.

Dressing Ingredients:

BEEF AND ONIONS ON THE GRILL

Ingredients: 1 lb. (or more) beef flap steak, sliced lengthwise 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar (not the fancy stuff) 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon oregano 1 teaspoon parsley 1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic 1/2 teaspoon granulated onion salt and pepper

BEEF AND ONIONS ON THE GRILL

Beef flap (or flap steak) is a cut from the lower sirloin. It's a long, thin cut that resembles skirt steak or hanger steak, though it comes from a different part of the animal. It's really hard to beat the flavor of a slab of beef that was simply marinated and thrown on the grill. Though the beef flap is a relatively thin piece of meat, carefully butterfly it by slicing it lengthwise with a sharp knife, to get 2 thinner pieces that really absorb the marinade.

To make the marinade, combine everything but the beef in a bowl, and whisk to mix thoroughly. Place the beef in a large Ziploc bag and add the marinade. Squeeze the bag so that the marinade reaches every part of the beef. Squeeze the air out of the bag, zip it tightly, and place it in a bowl, (in case of accidental spillage) in the fridge. Let it marinate overnight, squeezing the bag every few hours to let the marinade do its job. Remove the bag from the fridge about an hour before grilling, until the meat warms to room temperature.

Light a hardwood fire. When the coals are really hot, place the steak on the grill and sear each side. Next, flip to sear the other side. Flip again to get those fancy diamond marks on the beef and then flip again.

GRILLED VIDALIA ONIONS Nothing goes better with grilled beef than grilled Vidalias! Take a couple of onions and cut the tops, leaving the bottom, or root, intact. Peel off the outer layer of skin, carefully quarter the onions, see-sawing the knife down into the bulb until you get to the root, being careful not to cut all the way through.

In a separate bowl, mix a combination of garlic salt, pepper, paprika, and a bit of brown sugar. Take each onion, and carefully pull the quarters apart and drip some olive oil inside. Next, take some of the seasoning mix and jam it in there, as far down as possible.

Next, roast the onions over high heat at first to caramelize them; then move them to a part of the grill away from direct heat, close the lid, and let them cook for a few minutes. Once they've cooked enough, give them one last blast over the hot fire before serving.

Living in the beautiful Ocean State, most of us head down to the beach in the summer. because squinting all day is not cute – and hello, wrinkles!

I have a thing for designer sunglasses (there’s a difference, I swear), but I recommend a cheaper option for a day at the beach. This way, you won’t feel bad about the sunscreen, sand, and salt water on them, and don’t have to be so careful with them. I love this round plastic pair!

3. A fun beach towel. A beach towel is an obvious

Wickford

By Susan Gazerro Wickford is known as a little village in the beautiful State of Rhode Island. The village “feeling” dates back to 1709. Wickford was originally the vision of Lodowick Updike, grandson of one of North Kingstown’s first settlers, Richard Smith, and heir to the vast Smith/ Updike landholdings known as Cocumscussoca.

Cocumscussoca is a stretch of land measuring approximately nine miles long by three miles wide. Updike began selling lots, each “with three rods of frontage”, almost immediately. The village grew slowly at first and was the subject of much real estate speculation. As many as 20 homes were constructed by the time of the Revolution, many of which still exist today.

Upon Updike’s death all of the unsold land in the village was left to his five daughters. It didn’t take long for the daughters to sell the remaining land to members of the prominent Phillips and Fowler families. These two families completed Updike’s vision, including receiving the large profits that Updike envisioned.

Wickford became a haven for the prominent Newport residents during the Revolutionary War. The residents’ intent was to escape the British occupation of their seaport town. After the war, development in Wickford and the surrounding regions was slow. However; by the 1790s, the coastal and West Indies trade and a rapid expansion of fishing in the region fueled a period of growth as a port and shipbuilding center. Additionally, numerous taverns, shops, and support service businesses were opened. During this timeframe, the village also became the cultural, economic, social, religious, and civic center of not only North Kingstown, but much of southern Rhode Island.

During the 19th century, a number of churches, banks, meeting halls, and governmental buildings were established in Wickford. Additionally in 1800, the Washington Academy was founded by leaders of not only North Kingstown, but Providence and Newport ,as well. The academy was a school to train young men as educators, to satisfy the demand for public education.

The first president was Samuel Elam, a prominent New York and Newport businessman who kept a summer estate in North Kingstown.

Art Festival Since 1962, the Wickford Art Association has been the promoter of the Wickford Art Festival. This fine art festival features over 200 artisans from New England, nationally, and beyond. I have personally been attending the festival for quite a few years and have purchased some beautiful art that is unique and exceptional. This event provides the opportunity to see and purchase art and items you wouldn’t normally find in area shops.

ford’s boom period for a while. The slow decline of the boom was then abated in 1870 by the construction of the Newport & Wickford Railway & Steamship Line, funded largely by wealthy Newport patrons looking for a way to avoid the long trek up through Providence and Bristol to get to their summer mansions in the “City by the Sea”. The train left Wickford Junction on a regular basis; and made the short run down to Poplar Point where a waiting steamer could take travelers directly to Jamestown and Newport.

The influx of new money, jobs, and visitors revitalized the village at a critical juncture in its history, as many of the old colonial-era homes were falling into disrepair by that time. Additionally, the construction of the Sea View Trolley Line some two decades later, funded largely by wealthy Narragansett casino owners intent on providing a easy way to bring Rhode Islanders to their resorts and beaches, continued the revitalization initiated by the Newport Line.

The next two events forever left their mark in the village’s history. First, the great hurricane of 1938 wreaked havoc on the village and ruined its residents’ wells. This in turn initialized construction of a municipal water system, and secondly ramped up construction of the military complex at Quonset/Davisville. As a result, it caused an influx of residents overwhelming the local housing stock, and brought about reconstruction of many of the village’s larger homes into apartments in order to handle the influx of people.

The Wickford Art Association, along with the Rhode Island Art Education, are involved in the annual statewide art competition. Scholarships are presented to four high school seniors for versions of their fine work.

On April 1, 2016, the artworks were judged by Peter Geisser, Regional Vice President of the National Association of Art Education Association and scholarships were presented as follows: First place went to Kyle Palma of South Kingstown High School with a prize of $2,500. Second place was taken by Hope Terran of Chariho High School with a prize of $1,500. Third place was given to Stephannie Cames of Lincoln High School with a prize of $1,000. The Directors Award went to Sydney Darrow, of Tiverton High School with a prize of $500.

Also assisting with the scholarship presentations were Mia Thompson, WAA Scholarship Chair; Sarah Hale Folger, Executive Director of the Wickford Art Associaiton; Alexandrea Johnson, Wickford Art Festival Director; Rhode Island State Senator James Sheehan, and US Congressman James Langevin.

This year, the Wickford Art Festival will be held on July 9th and 10th. Take a ride to enjoy the day, where there is something for the whole family.

Wickford has survived, largely intact, mainly because of unique circumstances, and as a result of the groundbreaking use of historic zoning initiated by local residents, aka…The 1930s Main Street Association.

Diet or Exercise… Which is More Effective for Weight Loss?

By Susan Gazerro The answer to this question is both. The problem or challenge people face is once most people start exercising, they think that it is okay to eat whatever they want. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

You need to find a balance between the two. From when I became a fitness instructor, people, especially women, would tell me they want to lose weight. My response was and still is always the same. I am not a nutritionist or a doctor, however; I have certainly done my research over the years. I also tell people not to focus on the weight loss. Make exercise about being healthy and the weight loss, will be a fringe benefit. Exercise should be part of your weekly, if not daily routine. I cannot express the importance of exercise enough. We MUST move our bodies!

In the past, I have written about finding your “healthy” weight. Once you achieve that, you exercise for the means of staying healthy and maintaining your weight. You can lose weight just by dieting; yes, but there are a couple of issues with that. Once you go off the diet, it is almost a 100% guarantee that you will gain the weight back, plus more. The other issue I have is, if you are not exercising, you are not working your heart muscles or any other muscles that absolutely need movement. So yes, diet without exercise will drop some pounds at first, but exercise without the proper diet will not result in weight loss.

You can exercise 24 hours a day, but if you are not eating properly, you will not lose weight. Sure, you are getting the cardio benefit for your muscles; but you will not see consistent weight loss.

Below are some of my favorite foods that will detox the body naturally: 1. Fruits Fruits are extremely high in liquid-content, helping the body wash out toxins. They are also very easy to digest and are high in antioxidants, nutrients, fiber and many important vitamins, like vitamin C. 2. Green Foods Blue green algae, barley, wheatgrass, kale, spinach, spirulina, alfalfa, chard, arugula or other organic leafy greens will help give a chlorophyll-boost to your digestive tract. Chlorophyll rids the body of harmful environmental toxins from smog, heavy metals, herbicides, cleaning products and pesticides. They also aid the liver in detoxification.

3. Lemons, Oranges & Limes These citrus-wonders aid the body in flushing out toxins, as well as jump-start the digestive tract with enzymatic processes. They also aid the liver in its cleansing processes. To increase detoxification, start each morning with a warm glass of lemon water.

6. Green Tea Packed full of antioxidants, green tea not only washes toxins out of the system through its liquid content; but also contains a special type of antioxidant called catechins, known to increase liver function.

7. Mung Beans The mighty mung bean has been used by Ayurvedic doctors for thousands of years. It is incredibly easy to digest, and absorbs toxic residue on the sides of the intestinal walls.

8. Raw Vegetables Great choices are: onions, carrots, artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, garlic, beets, turmeric, and oregano. The combination of these foods will help your liver purge toxins during the cleansing process. These are high in naturally occurring sulphur and glutathione. Sulphur helps the liver detoxify harmful chemicals.

9. Seeds & Nuts Incorporate more seeds and nuts into your diet. This includes flaxseed, pumpkin seeds, almonds, walnuts, hemp seeds, sesame seeds, chia seeds, Siberian cedar nuts and sunflower seeds. While detoxing, avoid nut butters.

10. Omega-3 Oils Use hemp, avocado, olive oils or flax seed oil while detoxing. This will help lubricate the intestinal walls, allowing the toxins to be absorbed by the oil, and eliminate impurities in the body.

4. Garlic This pungent little bulb is one of the best available detox foods. It helps stimulate the liver into producing important detoxification enzymes that will help filter out toxic residues in the digestive system.

5. Broccoli Sprouts Extremely high in antioxidants, broccoli sprouts can help stimulate the detoxification enzymes in the digestive tract like none-other. The sprouts are actually more effective than the fully-grown vegetable.

With lots of invitations to BBQs throughout the summer, we will be tempted to indulge. In order to stay on track with our health goals, the following tips will be helpful: 1. Use smaller plates.

When we use smaller plates, our eyes see that the plate is full and tells your mind that you are satisfied with whatever is on the plate.

2. Eat slowly and mindfully.

When you eat slowly, you will eat less, taking in fewer calories. Eating fast will not give your mind or body time to realize that you are full, causing overindulgence.

3. Eat healthiest food first.

When you are using a smaller plate, you might as well fill it up with all of the healthy choices! Try a salad topped with a protein; and use an oil based dressing. This will keep you fuller for a longer period of time.

4. Skip the crackers, bread and chips.

These offer little satisfaction and you will become hungry again within 30 minutes.

5. Limit desserts. Although tempting and for some, the best part of a meal, most desserts are full of sugar and calories. You don’t have to skip dessert altogether, but make wise choices and do not go overboard.

There are a variety of different problems they treat at PPTC, including muscle strains, joint pain, herniated discs, sciatica and numerous joint problems.

Treatment includes many types of injections since Dr. Perry predominantly does interventional medicine depending on the situation at hand. They give epidural injections, tendon injections and joint/

muscle injections. He however does not prescribe any opiates or narcotics. Most of the shots given are cortisone shots or local anesthetics. Spinal injections are done with fluoroscopy which is an x-ray machine that takes moving images of the interior structure of an object. And peripheral injections for tendons, muscles and joints are done with an ultra sound.

Recovery time fluctuates. Some patients get 1 or 2 injections along with physical therapy and after 2 or 3 months they feel much better. Some take longer depending on what kind of conditions they have.

Plus, people react differently to treatments so the rehabilitation process is more extensive. Spinal injections may require 2 or 3 injections, whereas something like a muscle strain which can be more of a chronic problem might be given more injections to get rid of the pain.

PPTC usually see their patients every 4-6 weeks to reassess them and see how they are doing. At that time, if a patient still is not up to par, they will administer another shot that same day to speed up recovery time.

Part of the reason why PPTC stands out from other clinics in RI is that they don’t prescribe any pain medication. Studies show that opiates and narcotics prevent improving pain conditions. Another reason to choose PPTC is, Dr. Perry is always continuing taking classes and his education on new and innovative procedures to treat his clients pain. Plus, they are a small practice, with no nurse practitioners.

The only person who sees the patients is Dr. Perry from there he does a comprehensive evaluation and exam, so if something is not caught by a primary care doctor or another physician, Dr. Perry would be able to detect if there is another problem that is not being recognized or that is underlying. Ilana says, the best thing about her job is seeing the patients come through and say they aren’t in pain anymore, and that they won’t be visiting them for a few months.

“That feels pretty good.”

It’s a treatment called PRP or platelet rich plasma.

As you and your family discuss plans for a summer get away, set your sights on a place that is filled with amusement -Block Island. Block Island is a vacation must destination, especially for Rhode Island natives. It has more than you would expect for its size; and getting there can be almost as much fun as being there. Thousands of years ago, a glacier left rolling hills and ponds behind, forming what is now known as Block Island. The Narragansett Indians were the first inhabitants of Block Island as is proven by remains that date back thousands of years. Their original name for the island was “Manisses” which translates to “Island of the Little God.” In1614, Adrian Block, a Dutch explorer sailed to the island and gave it his name.

Block Island is part of Rhode Island and is located in the Atlantic Ocean. It is 13 miles south of the coast of mainland Rhode Island, from which it is separated by Block Island Sound.

The Block Island Ferry transports visitors to and from Block Island (from Pt. JudithGalilee) between Memorial Day and Columbus Day. When you arrive, your day will be filled with memorable things to do as you navigate the island. Below is a list of places to see,

SHOPS & AMENITIES

If you’re planning a trip to Block Island, RI, this is the list for you. Many day-trippers (and even overnight visitors) arrive on the island with no idea of where to go or what to do.

A perfect first stop after arriving on the island? Just a few steps from the ferry… The Visitor Center run by the island’s Chamber of Commerce.

Prefer to plan your trip in advance? Use this list as a guide, whether you’re visiting Block Island for the day…a week…or even longer.

Some day-trippers are quite content to spend the day on Block Island’s “main drag” in the Old Harbor area. To really experience all that Block Island has to offer, bike and moped rentals are available…or take a narrated taxi tour. Block Island is so small, you can get anywhere by bike in about 20 minutes.

Bike rental rates start at $15 for 2 hours or $30 for the whole day. If renting a moped is more your style, bring your driver’s license. Rates range from $60 for 2 hours to $85 for 4 hours.

Experience Mohegan Bluffs - Named “Best Beach

for Solitude” by Yankee Magazine and often compared to the cliffs of Ireland, Mohegan Bluffs is a must-see attraction for Block Island visitors. Nearly 200 feet high, the Bluffs offer stunning ocean views. The waves are rough enough to discourage most people from swimming, but just staring out at the wild surf is enough to stir the soul.

Visit the Lighthouses - Block Island's often-

photographed Southeast Lighthouse is situated on Mohegan Bluffs. It was once so close to the edge of the cliff it had to be moved 300 feet inland in 1993. Head to the northern tip of the island and you'll find the parking lot for the North Lighthouse. To get to the actual building, you'll have to walk about 3/4 mile down the beach. For those who make the trek, beautiful views await.

will find unique gifts from local jewelers, photographers and artisans. A favorite shop is Block Island Blue Pottery on Dodge Street. Owner Joan Mallick makes each piece of her beautiful stoneware pottery by hand. The Spring Street Gallery features original works by many local artists. The Scarlet Begonia is known for its quirky selection of items, and the Star Department Store for its affordable Block Island sweatshirts and T-shirts. A new favorite is the East of the River Nile Trading Company on Chapel Street, with a variety of ethnic gifts from around the world.

RESTAURANTS Island activities - swimming, biking. or simply lounging in the salty sea air never fail to make us hungry. Block Island offers many great food options and a stellar setting to enjoy them in. Here are some island favorites.

For the view- The Spring House Hotel joins Victorian elegance with a panoramic ocean view. On the menu: seafood, including fish tacos, burgers and lobster rolls, and pizza topped with basil and squash blossoms from the hotel’s onsite garden.

For a date-night meal- As the evening rolls in, a line often starts to form outside of Eli’s. Chef Evan Wargo’s Asian-inspired food is right up there with Providence’s finest, but the restaurant’s laidback atmosphere is textbook Block Island.

For drinks- With its private beach, multiple bars and packed live music schedule, Ballard’s Inn is the closet thing Rhode Island has to a Caribbean-style resort.

For grab-and-go-Few things are more satisfying than biting into a sandwich after a quad-burning bike ride up to Mohegan Bluffs. Pick one up from Three Sisters, loved by locals and tourists alike.

For sweets- There’s no shortage of sugar on this island. In the morning, head to Aldo’s Bakery for a flaky cinnamon twist or a chocolate-frosted doughnut. The Ice Cream Place serves creamy scoops wrapped in freshly made waffle cones.

If you want something to take home, stroll over to Chapel Sweets for fudge and old fashioned classic candy.

Block Island boasts some of the best beaches in the country — on either coast. Ranked among Coastal Living’s “21 Best Beach Vacations in the United States,” Fred Benson Town Beach provides a sandy shoreline and beach amenities. If you’re looking for a quieter atmosphere, you’ll find Scotch Beach. With generally fewer people than Fred Benson, its shoreline is perfect for skim boarding or body surfing. Further north of Scotch is Mansion Beach. One of the most popular beaches on the island, it boasts clear waters, soft sand and is a favorite of island visitors.

The Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce honored Charles M. “Chuck” Royce as its 2016 Citizen of the Year. The award recognizes outstanding leadership and exceptional contributions, to improving the quality of life in our community. “I cannot imagine a citizen who has made a more significant and lasting contribution to the quality of life and the favorable national recognition of our community than Chuck Royce,” said Chamber Executive Director Lisa Konicki.

Chuck is a mutual fund investor, philanthropist, and a visionary who is passionate about improving the Westerly community. He has demonstrated his generosity and commitment to the town through spearheading downtown revitalization projects, supporting enhanced cultural amenities, working to create jobs to spur a robust economy, increasing access to higher education, and encouraging aesthetic improvements.

The most notable of all Chuck’s ventures is the Ocean House, a $140 million dollar, 3-year ground-up rebuild project that involved demolition and historic reconstruction of this iconic property.

Through a generous $1.8 million donation, Chuck sponsored the CCRI Westerly campus that will serve as a training site for Electric Boat and address workforce development issues. Chuck has made generous charitable contributions to the Westerly Hospital, the Bring Back the Beach Campaign, and the Warm Shelter. The capital investment for the YMCA’s ice rink on Main Street was made by the Royce Family Fund: and, that rink presently serves over 15,000 people a year.

Film studios owning superheroes has been a constant struggle. Marvel owning The Avengers, DC owning the Justice League, Sony owning Spider-Man, and Fox owning the X-Men series. Now, Fox has continued the X-Men series with the newest installment: X-Men: Apocalypse.

The movie starts off in Egypt, where Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) is transferring his consciousness to a new body when he is attacked and put to sleep under tons of rubble.

Then, it fast-forwards to 1983 where a group of acolytes awakens Apocalypse and he travels the globe, acclimating himself to the new world. He finds a girl named Ororo (Alexandra Shipp) and enhances her powers, turning her into Storm. Then, we travel to Berlin where a mutant fight club is underway.

We see a glimpse at the Blob, then get to see Angel (Ben Hardy) fighting another mutant, Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Raven ( Jennifer Lawrence) breaks them both out and takes Kurt (Nightcrawler) with her to America. She stops at a black marketeer’s place to obtain documents for Kurt. Shortly after their departure, Apocalypse shows up, and takes Psylocke, a mutant with telekinetic abilities, with him. Apocalypse then comes across Angel and turns his feathery wings into sharp, silver daggers.

We then meet an adolescent Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan) in his high school, when his powers manifest. His brother, Alex, also known as Havoc (Lucas Till), takes him to Xavier’s School to help him. He then meets Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), a telepathic mutant and Professor Xavier ( James McAvoy). Then Raven and Kurt appear at

the school and they go to investigate the weird occurences going on around the world since Apocalypse’s rise. Then, the movie goes to Poland where we learn about Eric, a.k.a Magneto (Michael Fassbender) who now has a wife and child. He is trying to keep his identity a secret but after saving a co worker the police attempt to capture him, then his daughter reveals her mutant powers, and things go awry Apocalypse then shows up (This dude is everywhere!) and takes Eric to Auschwitz, where his powers originated. Apocalypse explains that Magneto’s powers allow him to control not just metal but the whole Earth, as it’s inner core and mantle contain metals like nickel and iron.

Apocalypse then starts to put his ultimate plan in action.

He overides all of the goverment’s systems and launches their missiles into the sky. Professor Xavier’s uses Cerebro to locate Apocalypse, but reveals himself. Quicksilver (Evan Peters) shows up for another pretty amazing scene like he did in Days of Future Past. But some of the mutants were taken hostage and taken to a secret facility where another mutant (Awesome cameo!) who helps them escape.

Jean, Beast, Mystique, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Quicksilver and the other mutants come back together in Cairo to face off against Apocalypse, Storm, Magneto, Angel and Psylocke in the finale.

Overall, the movie was great. It did rush along quite fast though and was very choppy, but there were some amazing scenes, like Quicksilver’s slow-motion running through the Mansion. I give the movie 4 out of 6 diamonds. Rated PG-13 for mild violence.

Rhode Island’s Got Talent…

Mat Franco was born on May 10, 1988 and grew up in Johnston, Rhode Island. As a child, Mat’s way of learning magic was by watching magicians on TV. He would videotape shows and then study them for countless hours in great detail. At just 12 years old, after saving money from local shows, Mat traveled to Las Vegas to study and learn from some of magic’s biggest names.

Just a few years later, Mat was invited back to Las Vegas as a teenager, being hired to perform at the Riviera Hotel and Casino as part of the Society of American Magicians National Convention. During his teen years, Mat won several awards from the magic community by competing in statewide and national magic contests.

Mat was always amazed with the power and effectiveness of “word-of-mouth” advertising, but to bring his passion to the next level, he knew there was much more to be learned. Before approaching magic as a full time endeavor, he was a student of business (marketing) at the University of Rhode Island. Mat also minored in communication studies. Using his education as a tool, he was able to turn his hobby into a career. In addition to Mat’s work as a live performer, he is also the founder of “Franco Talent” - a specialty talent agency featuring 70 ShopInRI

Mat Franco’s audition for America’s Got Talent consisted of performing a card trick in which he told a story about his magic career and the America’s Got Talent judges, while pulling out cards that fit the story. He also created the illusion of morphing cards into pictures of the judges. Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howie Mandel all voted “Yes,” sending Mat to “Judgment Week”.

Mat was placed into the “Magicians” category in Judgment Week. His performance in in the next show consisted of having Mel B pick a random card and laying cards on a table so that their backs created an image of Howie Mandel holding the card Mel B picked. Mat’s performance was strong enough for the judges to send him to the quarterfinals.

For the quarterfinals performance, Mat’s trick consisted of spraying with paint a playing card image on the back of a wall, having Heidi Klum pick a random card from a deck of cards, revealing the painted wall to portray a different card than the one Heidi picked. He then lit the wall paper on fire to reveal Heidi’s card imprinted

on the wall. Last, he revealed that the card he had painted had been slipped into Howie Mandel’s back pocket.

Howard Stern, Heidi, and Howie gave Mat standing ovations. He received enough votes to be sent to the semifinals.

Mat Franco’s week 2 semifinals performance consisted of Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel picking three playing cards at random. Mat then handed the three cards (numbered 6, 4, and 2) to Mel B and took a photo of her holding the cards with her phone. He then dropped Mel B’s phone into cup of water, isolated the phone in a bag, drying the phone within the bag with a hair dryer, and revealing the phone to have disappeared within the bag as smoke was emitted.

Heidi then called Mel B’s phone, revealing the phone to be ringing in the audience. Mat cut into a seat cushion labeled “642,” revealing the phone ringing in the seat cushion. He then revealed that the phone contained the photo taken earlier in the performance.

Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel both gave Mat standing ovations. Mat received enough votes to be sent to the top 12 finals.

Mat Franco’s top 12 final’s performance consisted of laying a small box on the judges’ table and having Mel B place her phone on the small box.

Mat then showed a deck of different playing cards. He asked the audience

to think of just one card in a deck he flipped through, loaded a cannon with cards, and revealed only one card stuck to the ceiling. He then had Howard Stern sign his name on one card, buried it halfway in the deck, and asked the judges to snap their fingers. Whenever they did, the signed card returned back to the top of deck whether the card was stuck in the middle, a stack of cards was laid on it, or the card was bent.

Mat then had Mel B lift her phone and reveal inside the small box Howard’s signed card. Mat received enough votes to be sent to the final 6.

Mat Franco’s top 6 finals recap performance consisted of telling a rhyming story about the judges’ interactions in a bar with three cups and three balls that were repeatedly disappearing. The performance ended with three tennis balls appearing from within the cups.

Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howie Mandel all gave him standing ovations.

Mat’s known for blending humor and magic. During the America’s Got Talent finale episode, Mat did a raunchy magic trick with Rosie O’Donnell and Howard Stern. For the finale, Mat performed an illusion consisting of three playing cards being transferred without touch from Rosie O’Donnell’s body to Howard Stern’s body. Mat was revealed to have finished in first place in the competition that same night and was the show’s first winning magician to collect the million dollar prize and also received a headline show in Las Vegas.

Mat’s second performance of the night consisted of 52 audience members hold large masked playing cards on the stage. Mat held a normal deck of cards.

He then shuffled the deck on the table while the audience shuffled themselves into one line. Mat pulled out one random red card and one random black card. So whether you’re already retired or are planning to retire in the next few years, consider the following suggestions: • Try to overcome the “yips.” When you miss those short puts – the ones you know you should be making – you might be in the grip of your old friend, the “yips.” As you know, it’s not always easy to shake this problem, but many golfers have benefited by working to improve their concentration, especially by adhering to a strict pre-shot and in-shot step-by-step routine. When investing for retirement, or managing their portfolios during retirement, many people can get the investment version of the yips – that is, they get nervous during market downturns, and then they make mistakes, such as selling quality investments when their price has dropped. (Remember the first rule of investing: Buy low and sell high.) Managing Your 401k By: Robert N. Auclair

The 401K plan was never intended to be the primary savings vehicle for retirement. Thirty years ago it was the traditional pension or defined benefit plan. The “benefit” was generally derived from years worked and salary earned to give the retiree a percentage of their income to last throughout their retirement. The 401K plan was originally designed as a perk to allow highly compensated employees to defer more of their income for tax purposes. But employers saw that 401K plans were significantly cheaper than traditional pension plans, so they slowly got rid of the traditional pension in favor of the less expensive 401K. This has shifted the responsibility of saving and managing retirement funds from the employer to the employee; and has produced a very uncertain outlook on retirement savings for many of today’s workers.

To start, most employees must elect to sign up for the 401K plan. Participation is often not automatic as it was with pension plans. Currently over 20% of Americans who are eligible for a 401K never enroll. It’s either too confusing or simply is not a priority. By not enrolling in the plan, you are missing out on valuable time needed to save, and the receipt of matching contributions that employers often make.

If you are one of those who actively participate in your 401K and think your job is over, think again. Traditional pension plans had a professional who managed the investments. Now you are the investment professional who needs to make the important decisions. One of the most common mistakes that 14% of 401K participants make is being too conservative, often sticking with the money market or fixed interest fund. The second mistake that over 25% of

401K participants make is being too aggressive. Too many people invest all of their funds in company stock or other high-risk investments, without regard for proper diversification. Either of these investment strategies can have a negative impact on retirement savings.

You should first build a portfolio that reflects a balanced asset allocation based on a timeframe, risk tolerance, age, investment experience, etc. In short, how much should you put into stocks, bonds, and cash to safely reach your goals?

To help with this, the 401K plan sponsor will often provide a questionnaire to help determine your asset allocation.

Websites such as, www.fidelity.com also have resources to assist in building an effective asset allocation. Once you have an asset allocation, you can turn your attention to the selection of funds. Again, a 401K sponsor should provide some basic resources. Another independent resource for fund research is www.morningstar.com.

Because different investments grow at different rates, your portfolio may become more conservative or more aggressive over time. You need to monitor this and rebalance your 401K on a regular basis. Also, consider contributing more to your 401K each year. Remember the contribution is pretax. For example, if you pay 25% in federal taxes and 5% in state taxes contributing $1000 will only reduce your take-home pay by about $700 annually. Tax time might be a good opportunity to address these two issues each year.

Many years ago it was not uncommon for employees with pension plans to stay at one company throughout their employment. In today’s world, that is often not the case. So, make sure you know your options when leaving an employer. Your 401K can be left at your previous employer, however; you are less likely to pay attention to an account held by an old employer. If your plan at your new employer accepts rollovers, you can move the old plan over to the new one. Your third choice is to roll your old 401K to a self-directed rollover IRA. This allows you full control over costs and investment choices. Similarly, if you are 59 ½ and your company plan allows, you may be able to make an in-service rollover to a self-directed IRA, even without changing jobs. Pets in Need Veterinary Clinic -East Providence Every year, veterinarians throughout Rhode Island see thousands of pet owners who are elderly, disabled, or low-income, and who don’t have the financial means to provide proper veterinary care for their pets. Despite the efforts of many veterinarians and agencies, these pet owners are often left with nowhere to turn when their pets are in need. To help meet this demand, the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA), the Marvin Fund, and the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association Companion Animal Foundation (RIVMA CAF) have partnered to establish a full-service, low-cost veterinary clinic.

The Pets in Need in Veterinary Clinic will provide medical and surgical services for pets owned by need-based elderly, disabled and low income citizens of Rhode Island. Pet owners who demonstrate income eligibility and/or current participation in a state or federal benefit program will be able to access care for their pets. The clinic is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization whose sole mission is to provide quality veterinary care for pets who may not otherwise receive it.

The Pets in Need Veterinary Clinic is located at 40 Amaral Street in East Providence and will initially be open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. The clinic will be fully staffed with an experienced veterinarian and experienced veterinary technicians. Volunteer veterinarians from throughout the state have also generously offered to contribute their time and expertise at the clinic. Appointments can be made by contacting the clinic at (401) 270-3832. Eligibility will also be explained by the clinic staff when calling to make an appointment. Emergency and life threatening cases will be treated regardless of eligibility. All clients of the clinic will be expected to pay a nominal fee for the care provided to their pets.

The opening of the Pets in Need Veterinary Clinic has been years in the making and is the result of the tireless efforts of Dr. Hank Wietsma of the Coventry Animal Hospital, and past chair of the Companion Animal Foundation, and the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association, and Dr. E.J. Finocchio, President of the Rhode Island SPCA. The RIVMA Companion Animal Foundation was established in 2004 and was the first veterinary82 ShopInRI

based assistance program in the nation. Each year, they give thousands of dollars in assistance to low-income pet owners through grants recommended by RIVMA members. The Rhode Island SPCA’s Marvin Fund helps defray medical costs for sick and injured animals whose elderly, disabled, or low income owners could not afford. Since it was established in 2002, the Marvin Fund has helped over 4,500 pets; and people get a second chance through the low-cost veterinary clinic at the Rhode Island SPCA with veterinary costs. Partnering to open the Pets in Need Veterinary Clinic will allow for these two organizations to have an even greater impact on pets of low-income owners throughout the state.

Thanks to this historic partnership between a major animal welfare organization and a state veterinary medical association, a significant number of clients will now be able to get the quality veterinary care for their beloved pets, which was not possible in the past. The Pets in Need Veterinary Clinic is a second chance for pets that would otherwise go without preventative and curative care.

The Significance of Animals

Animals, just like humans, have and serve a purpose. With research, I found that nobody recognizes this more than the Indians. Animals are very sacred to them. I love domesticated animals, but in addition, two of my favorite animals are the horse and the eagle. They are so interesting, and both so powerful and intelligent.

Let’s start with the horse. The horse is an important part of the Lakota culture. The ownership or possession of a horse by the Plains Indians transformed the people. Horses changed the way the Plains Indians hunted. Once they realized that they could ride horses, it became a much more effective way to hunt. You see, the horse could run much faster than the buffalo, giving the hunter a huge advantage.

The Plains Indians were nomadic people. At one time, everything they needed had to be carried by foot or with dogs.

When the horse came, it was such a blessing. Many actually called the horse a “scared dog” (“sunka waken”). The horse had very similar duties as man and dog; but they could do it at a much faster speed, and had much more endurance, allowing them to travel further distances. Today, as in historical times, horses have many purposes. They can be domesticated animals. They are often used for both physical and emotional therapy. A horse’s intelligence and sense are part of its adaptation to their environment. Horses have abilities that give them a survival advantage; for example, the ability to run away from danger, to kick at a predator, or to whinny to other horses over long distances.

As far as their senses, they are able to smell water or food that is at a far distance. They can detect a predator with their sense of hearing. Their hearing is so finely tuned that it is not always a benefit. It can cause a horse to run from its rider if it hears a startling sound, even if it is just a rustling in the under bush. A horse can also hear frequencies at a much higher level than humans. They can hear grass moving in the wind, or even the rustling of a plastic bag. This is why horses are often spooked and become frightened. Their reaction is often misunderstood because humans are not hearing what they hear. Like many animals, horses, are herd animals and

think differently than we do. As a result, the comparison of cognitive skills is not possible. Also, like many other animals, horses have a very highly attuned “social intelligence”.

They know the leader of their herd and they know where their place is in the heard. This is referred to as social hierarchy. They know the leaders and the “boss”, and they also know who they can overpower.

The eagle is a symbol for the Lakota (Sioux) people. It is their symbol because it is seen as the strongest and bravest of all birds. The eagle is the “king” of the sky. The eagles’ feathers represent the highest, bravest, strongest and most holy. An eagle’s feathers are treated with the utmost respect, and are worn with dignity and pride. When the feathers of an eagle are held over one’s head, it means the person is brave or wished bravery and happiness. When the feathers are waved, it means that everyone is wished peace, prosperity and happiness.

There are more than 60 different species of eagles. Eagles are different from many other birds of prey mainly due to their larger size, more powerful build, and heavier head and beak.

Eagles have unusual eyes. As humans, we see just three basic colors, but eagles see five. They also have five times the amount of cells in their retina than humans. These adaptations gives eagles extremely keen eyesight, and enable them to spot even well-camouflaged potential prey from a very long distance. Studies have proven that an eagle’s vision is amongst the sharpest of all animals. Eagles have been known to carry prey as large as deer and monkeys.

One of my favorite short stories is called “The Push”. “The Push” is about a mother eagle’s unconditional love. Eagles build their nests high up on cliffs. “The Push” tells the story of when the mother eagle feels her babies are ready to fly, she takes them to the edge of a cliff and gives them a nudge.

She is always nearby to scoop them if need be; but she is confident that they are capable and ready. She knows they have wings and encourages their use. Like I always say, people can learn from animals.

You will also want to practice when your dog is on leash and off leash so he gets used to that.

The Name Game This goal here is for your dog to whip his head toward you when you call his name. There are a couple of ways to teach your dog his name: • Lure his attention – Here you will hold a treat in front of his nose and move your treat hand up toward your eyes. When he is looking up in your face, then you can click and treat. Once he is readily following your treat hand, add the word (your dog’s name) and click and treat.

• Capture his attention – If your dog already knows his name a little, then you can catch him when is already looking toward you. Click and treat.

When your dog is reliable at some distance, then you can add some distractions. Start with short distances again, then add a mild distraction. Say your dog’s name, Click/treat when he whips his head around.

Click and treat whenever your dog makes direct eye contact with you. New England Patriots Offensive Lineman Sebastian Vollmer takes steps to block further hair loss Born in Germany, New England Patriots offensive lineman and Super Bowl Champion Sebastian Vollmer thought male hair loss was simply a part of life, and was unaware that there were treatment options available.
