grating from Sicily and Naples, Italy. His family grew up close to the area, and when he opened his restaurant on 441 Atwells Ave. in Providence three years ago, it was a homecoming for him and his family.
“I left in 1989 to work in Las Vegas and Florida at various Italian festivals,” said Palmisano, who is a third-generation feast festival promoter and a well-known local philanthropist. Our family loves the area and has been a part of this community for years. When this space (for the restaurant) was available, it was like coming home again,” he continued.
The restaurant employs a dozen people and prides itself on serving dishes with a nod to the “Old Country.” Diners can feast on several signature dishes, including their bone-in veal chops that are so big that they take up the entire plate, their linguini and clams and their Italian stuffed artichokes. Patrons can also dive into their fresh fish dishes, chicken or veal parmigiana with pasta, or perhaps for dessert, their amazingly delicious homemade cannolis.
Perhaps their calling card is their "World Famous Expresso Martinis,” among other specialty cocktails that are infused with rosemary, ginger and other herbs to give them an authentic flair and taste.
Palmisano said that his goal for operating a successful restaurant is simple: “I want people to feel like they are eating at my house.”
He noted about how meals are cultivated back in Italy. “It starts with visiting the local butcher shop for the freshest meat, then walking to the garden to select the vegetables, and maybe to the local store to pick up a bottle of wine. Palmisano said that the restaurant strives to maintain this tradition because “farm to table” offers the best quality and flavors for their customers.
“I hope that when customers visit Anthony’s Italian Cuisine, they enjoy a little piece of Italy with every made-to-order dish,” he said.
The restaurant is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The bar remains open one hour after closing.
They also cater events and have daily specials and promotions. For more details about these upcoming events, please call 401273-5900. More details may be found by visiting their website at www.AnthonysonFederalHill.com.

Already dreading long security lines for your next flight? There’ve long been services that allow you to cut those lines, but you’ve got to open your wallet and do a good amount of prep work for them. Now, an option for those short on funds and time: the Reserve service by Clear, a free program that allows customers to book a spot ahead of time that sends them to the front of the line at TSA checkpoints.
The Clear site explains how the process works: In advance of your flight (how long in advance depends on the airport), you’d simply log on to make a reservation for the time you’d like to pass through security. You’ll receive a QR code that, on the day of your flight, you’ll show to a staffer in the Reserve lane near the TSA checkpoint. The service isn’t available at every airport (there are about 20 in the US, Canada, and Europe currently listed) and even at those airports, the service may be limited to certain areas. A company rep said they’re working on adding more airports into the mix.
Reserve customers must still remove their shoes and jackets and take their electronics out for screening. Clear also offers a paid service called Clear Plus, which for the price of $189 per year allows users to not only skip to the front of the line, but also to not have to show ID; instead, your eyes or fingerprints are scanned.
TSA PreCheck also offers a paid service ($78 for five years) that, because you’ve gone through advance vetting, means you don’t have to remove your shoes, jacket, laptop, or other items. Reserve remains an option for those who don’t want to pay. “Travelers can now save even more time by seamlessly reserving their spot in the security line,” a Clear rep said in a statement.
Shop In RI Selects: The Taste of Maine Restaurant in Woolwich, Maine for having the world’s largest lobster roll.

There are a few food items that are synonymous with Maine, one of them being the ever-so-delicious lobster roll. Tourists have been flocking to every corner of the Pine Tree state for decades to devour the delicacy. However, not all lobster rolls are built the same. Often, the biggest complaint people have about a lobster is...not enough lobster. So, the Taste of Maine restaurant in Woolwich decided to solve that problem once and for all. Shared on Facebook by Taste of Maine restaurant, they claim to be serving the world’s largest lobster roll, a monster sub at least three times the size of a typical lobster roll. The number one question in comments seems to be about the price. Given current market conditions for lobster, the daily market price for the ’world’s largest lobster roll’ has been between $150 and $170. Some will scoff at the price, but if you’re traveling from afar just to get your hands on a Maine lobster roll, why not try the largest one?
Sugarbush is an overlooked gem among its peers, with many skiers heading to nearby Killington, Stowe, or Mad River Glen over this double mountain resort. So why shouldn’t you do the same? To put it simply, Sugarbush offers practically everything that those more popular ski areas boast, minus the crowds. So if you fancy schussing down a freshly groomed slope without queuing for a lift or dodging snowploughers this could be just the place for you!
Fourth of July Airfare Down By 27% From Last Year
Travelers who plan to fly over the Fourth of July holiday weekend can expect to pay less for their domestic tickets this year, as round trip tickets will be 27% lower this year than they were at the same time in 2022.
A round-trip ticket this year will cost a traveler a little more than $300, which is over $100 cheaper than last year. The prices of round-trip tickets are in line with how much round-trip tickets cost in 2019, according to an analysis by Hopper.
Terrain: The resort is made up of two interconnected mountains, Lincoln Peak, where the majority of trails are, and Mount Ellen. Other lower peaks include Castle Rock, Gadd Peak and North Lynx. For the type of gnarly terrain you would expect from Mad River Glen, just hop aboard the Castle Rock Double chair to Castle Rock. From the top at 3,812 ft, you’ll have the steep double black chutes of Lift Line and Rumble to get stuck into. If clocking up maximum vertical drop is more your thing then you’ll find the slopes here laid out much better for top-to-bottom shredding than at Killington. Even if you ski all 111 trails here, there’s also 2,000 ac of backcountry to explore in the Slide Brook Basin area!

June 29 and June 30 are expected to be the busiest days of the holiday weekend, with 3.7 million people expected to depart from U.S. airports on both days. The least busy day of the long weekend will be on the Fourth of July itself. A total of 3.5 million people are expected to depart from airports on July 5.
The busiest airport in the country is expected to be Atlanta’s, where over 1.8 million travelers are expected to pass through. Other airports which will be exceedingly busy include Dallas (DFW), Denver (DEN), Los Angeles (LAX), and Las Vegas (LAS).
Town: If all that wasn’t enough, Sugarbush is generally a notch cheaper than pricey Stowe, but not at the sacrifice of luxury. For lavish lodgings, look no further than Lincoln Peak Village. For these reasons and more, when it comes to the most practical ski destination in Vermont, Sugarbush is a fantasic choice for a winter weekend getaway!

There’s a Fresh Geyser Mystery in Yellowstone
She Became a Bride and a Widow Within Minutes
Front Page
It’s unclear why the Steamboat THE TOP EARNING MUSICIANS OF THE DECADE
It’s the tallest active geyser on the planet— with an emphasis on “active.” From 2015 to 2017, it didn’t erupt at all. There was another largely quiet period from 1911 to 1961, but in 2018 it logged a record-setting 32 eruptions, a feat it has crushed this year with 47 eruptions, per the US Geological Survey. Why? Good question, and one that hasn’t been answered. It’s one on a long list of geyser mysteries, in fact. The geyser-research field is a thin one, and as Yellowstone National Park’s hydrologist explained the area beneath Steamboat hasn’t been mapped. However, seismic sensors there have revealed that the geyser’s water source may sit as deep as 130 feet.
Johnnie Mae had suffered two recent losses, including that of her father, when she stood in front of friends and family and committed to the love of her life on Monday. But within the hour, her groom was dead, too. As Mae and new husband Toraze Davis of Omaha, Nebraska, left the church where they said “I do,” Davis suffered a blood clot that made his heart stop. “It happened within seconds ... just after the ceremony had begun,” friend Jewel Roberson said. Family and friends are now rallying behind Mae, director of ECO Supportive Living, which assists the elderly and those with disabilities.
“Johnnie Mae has suffered through so much,” says Roberson. Now “she’s been widowed and married in a 10-minute span.”
“It’s seriously the saddest thing ever,” Tricia Pugsley said. She was supposed to DJ the couple’s wedding reception, but “they went to the hospital instead.” That’s where Mae “had to say goodbye to her new husband.”
Most other geysers seem to be fueled by shallower reserves; deeper equals warmer, so that could be a factor in Steamboat’s ability to propel water to heights of more than 300 feet. Michael Poland with the USGS earlier this year said it’s possible that increased snowfall in Yellowstone of late has led to more groundwater to fuel the geyser. What scientists are saying is that there’s no link between the increased activity and any potential looming eruption of Yellowstone’s supervolcano. “Yellowstone has an incredible geyser system that is unrelated to magmatic activity—other than the magmatic system basically providing heat,” tweeted one volcanologist. USA Today noted that the Waimangu Geyser in New Zealand has managed to shoot water taller than Steamboat has, but it’s been
A GoFundMe page has raised more than $20,000 for Mae and the children the couple shared. Mae “always helps others; this is our time to help her,” the page reads. Some are finding solace in knowing that 48-year-old Davis died on what was evidently “the happiest day of his life,” a friend said. Another friend says she hopes the tragedy will teach others to care for themselves, including through annual visits to the doctor. “Not all medical emergencies are preventable. However, some may be,” says nurse Tonja Ross.

Real Life Happy Gilmore Hears From Adam Sandler
For the record, his given name is Landon Gilmore. But the teenage Indiana golfer has been going by ”Happy Gilmore” since he was a little kid because he can hit the ball like the fictional player of that name in Adam Sandler’s 1996 movie, per the Indianapolis Star. Now, the two have connected in real life. After Gilmore announced his commitment to golf for Ball State University, Sandler took note on Twitter.
”Go get em Happy,” Sandler wrote. ”Pulling for you.” Replied Gilmore: ”my life is complete.”
Gilmore is indeed ”really good at golf,” per a profile at Golf.com,
and, yes, he enters tournaments under the moniker of Happy Gilmore. One key difference between reality and art: Gilmore doesn’t play hockey and can’t even skate. He has, however, mastered the unique hockey-style tee shot used by Sandler in the movie. ”It never fails,” he says of fellow junior circuit players. ”Every tournament, every round, someone’s, like, can you do the Happy Gilmore?”

Archaeologists searching an area of uninhabited jungle almost the size of Rhode Island have found the Mayan equivalent of Providence. Mexico’s anthropology institute says the previously unknown ancient city was spotted in searches of the Balamku ecological reserve on the Yucatan Peninsula using aerial laser mapping. Researchers explored the site from May to mid-June. They say the city, on high ground surrounded by wetlands, appears to have been an important center between around 250AD and 1,000AD, though pottery and other items found at the site suggest it began to decline around 800AD. Archaeologists have named the city Ocomtún, the Mayan word for stone column. Numerous stone columns found at the site are believed to have been entrances to rooms in upper parts of buildings. Researchers say the core area of the city includes several pyramid-shaped structures up to 50 feet high, plazas with “imposing buildings,” a ball court, and altars. The team says the city was found in an area of more than 1,500 square miles of jungle so dense it has been little explored.

It still haunts me.” The line from 28-year-old Thai resident Suwanne Maliwan to Reuters expresses a common sentiment Thursday, the 15th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed 230,000 lives. Maliwan, for instance, lost both her parents and five other relatives. ”Sometimes I dream that a wave is coming,” she says. Vigils and memorials across Asia were commemorating the staggering loss of life in what was one of the world’s deadliest natural disasters. A 9.1 magnitude earthquake off Sumatra island the morning after Christmas in 2004 triggered the tsunami and unleashed waves as high as 57 feet.
Egypt opened two of its oldest pyramids, located about 25 miles south of the capital Cairo, to visitors for the first time since 1965. Antiquities Minister Khaled el-Anany told reporters that tourists are now allowed to visit the Bent Pyramid and its satellite pyramid in the Dahshur royal necropolis, which is part of the Memphis Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bent Pyramid, which the AP reports was built during the Old Kingdom of the Pharaoh of Sneferu, in about 2600 BC, is unique in that it has two internal structures. El-Anany said the Bent Pyramid represents a transitional form of pyramid construction between the Djoser Step Pyramid (2667-2648 BC) and the Meidum Pyramid (also about 2600 BC). The Guardian notes its "unusual" shape: The first 160 feet rise at "a steep 54 degree angle, before tapering off towards the top."
You may one day drive down roads charged with electricity that your vehicle automatically detects and sucks up through an automatic arm—if a Swedish project gains any headway. Called eRoadArlanda, it has turned 1.2 miles of road outside Stockholm into a kind of slot-car track where electric trucks insert movable arms into a rail to recharge the vehicle’s battery while driving. Designers say the technology is weather-proof and the arm will rise automatically when one car passes another, Sky News reports. The rails are also said to be safe to the touch.

A painting that sold at auction for $40,000 in 2008 is expected to fetch between $5 to $8 million when it goes under the hammer next month. Last time around, St. Sebastian Tended by Two Angels was attributed to the French Baroque painter Laurent de la Hyre. In the years since, however, experts have identified the painting depicting the Roman soldier “pierced by soldiers’ arrows and left to die after he converted to Christianity, before angels miraculously intervene,” as a work of Peter Paul Rubens, the celebrated old master of Flemish Baroque painting. What’s more, the work is believed to be the original model on which another of Rubens’ major works, previously thought to be unique, is based.
Coastal areas of Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, and other countries were deluged. One of the first areas hit was Indonesia’s Aceh province, notes CBS News. In fact, most of those killed were in Indonesia alone, where 170,000 deaths were registered. ”No words can describe our feelings when we tearfully saw thousands of corpses lying on this ground 15 years ago,” said acting Aceh Gov. Nova Iriansyah at a ceremony in Sigli. ”And now, we can see how people in Aceh were able to overcome suffering and rise again, thanks to assistance from all Indonesians and from people all over the world.”
Johnson said he admires Kelzenberg's courage but that he won't be able to attend prom because he'll be in Hawaii filming Jungle Cruise. Instead, Johnson rented out a nearby movie theater on Saturday for Kelzenberg and more than 230 friends and family to watch his latest movie, Rampage. Johnson even covered the cost of snacks and drinks for the theater. "I couldn't believe it. I was so surprised," Kelzenberg says. "I just kept thinking, 'He saw me! He knows who I am!'" Kelzenberg says she became a fan of Johnson's five years ago. Her favorite movies of his include Central Intelligence and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
“One of the most important issues of our time is the question of how to make fossil-free road transportation a reality,” says eRoadArlanda Chairman Hans Säll. “We now have a solution that will make this possible, which is amazing.” Among its pluses, Säll says the electric road lets vehicles have smaller batteries and therefore makes vehicles cheaper to produce. The $7.7 million project will be tested with a truck fleet for two years, and if the government approves, it could be implemented for $1.9 million per mile and include buses and cars. “Sweden is at the cutting edge of this technology, which we now hope to introduce in other areas of the country and the world,” Säll says.
Rome Opens Up Spot Where Caesar Was Killed
El-Anany also announced that Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered a collection of stone, clay, and wooden sarcophagi, some of them with mummies, in the area. He said archaeologists also found wooden funerary masks along with instruments used for cutting stones, dating to the Late Period (664332 BC). Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said they also uncovered large stone blocks along with limestone and granite fragments indicating the existence of ancient graves in the area. Egypt has been whipping up publicity for its new historical discoveries in the hopes of reviving a devastated tourism sector still recovering from the turmoil following a 2011 uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
Tourists can now get up close to the square where Julius Caesar was fatally stabbed on the Ides of March in 44BC. Rome has opened up the ancient Largo Argentina site, and that’s where the Roman dictator is said to have been killed in an incident later famously dramatized by William Shakespeare. Four ancient temples’ remains are at the site, which is below street level and up til now could only be viewed from behind barriers. However, visitors will be able to get much closer and see more of the site thanks to work that was funded by Italian luxury jeweler Bulgari, the AP reports. Stairs and an elevator are available down from the sidewalk, and new walkways have been built for tourists. Lights were also added for the evenings. The “Sacred Area,” as it’s known, is also home to a colony of stray cats. It was first discovered during a demolition of medieval-era buildings in the 1920s and is “one of the best-preserved remains of the Roman Republic,” says Rome’s top official for cultural heritage
Multimillionaire Invites 10 People to Come Live in ’Paradise’
A 12-year-old Australian boy has pulled off a bold feat that drew international headlines: He stole his mom’s credit card and managed to fly to Bali, Indonesia, for a posh, four-day vacation before getting caught. As recounted in the Australian program A Current Affair, the boy did some research online and figured out he could fly alone without needing a letter from a parent on Jetstar Airways. He nabbed his mom’s credit card, tricked his grandmother into giving him his passport, took a train to the airport, and flew to Bali. “They just asked for my student ID and passport to prove that I’m over 12 and that I’m in secondary school,” says the boy, identified only as Drew. He then checked into a four-star hotel, having made reservations in advance, telling the clerk that his older sister would be joining him soon.
said. First mentioned in 1655 in the will of Ambrogio’s son, the painting can be traced through the family up until 1731, after which it passed to Ambrogio’s granddaughter’s matriline. It resurfaced in Missouri in 1963, but the attribution to Rubens was lost.
Ethiopia claims it has smashed a world record in the name of climate change— and the tree planting isn’t even done. More than 353 million tree seedlin gs were planted across the country just 12 hours as part of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Green Legacy refores tation campaign. The campaign hopes to see 4 billion indigenous trees plant ed between May and October. Citizens had been encouraged to plant 200 mil lion trees but Ahmed tweeted that 150 million had been planted after just hours. At the end of 12 hours, the country’s minster for innovation and chnology, Getahun Mekuria, announced 353,633,660 seedlings had gone the ground—more than five times as many trees as were planted in India 12 hours in 2017. Some schools and government offices closed to allow dents and civil servants to take part, which notes 2.6 billion trees have been planted across Ethiopia. The Guardian reports each citizen is asked plant at least 40 seedlings. The goal is to transform Ethiopia’s landscape, which is seeing degradation, soil erosion, deforestation, and droughts and flooding tied to agriculture. About 80% of Ethiopia’s population relies on agriculture to make a living, with the result that just 4% of land is now forested, com pared to 30% at the end of the 19th century, according to Farm Africa. Al Jazeera, a recent study estimates that 1 trillion new trees could pull most 750 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere—or about much as humans have released in the last 25 years—over several decades
France is trying to hang onto a medieval painting with a cra zy backstory. The nation has blocked the export of a small, 13th-century work by the Ita lian artist Cimabue, a painting that hung unnoticed for deca des above a hotplate in a Fren ch woman's kitchen. An auctioneer spotted the painting as the elderly woman was preparing to sell her house, and Christ then sold for a staggering $26 million at auction earlier this year, the Guardian. The buyers are anonymous, but they're believed group of Chilean collectors based in the US. Now, however, they won't be able to own the painting after all.
And there he stayed, having a fine time while his panicked mom reported him as missing back home. It wasn’t until the boy posted a video of himself in the hotel pool that his vacation finally came to an end. “I was shocked and disgusted, there’s no emotion to feel what we felt when we found out that he’d left overseas,” says mom, per news.com.au. One reason she’s ticked: Her son had actually tried this stunt twice before, only to be turned away at the airport by Qantas and Garuda Airlines. Mom says she was informed her son’s passport would be flagged by federal authorities as a result, but that apparently never happened. In the aftermath, Jetstar promises to tighten up its policies. “He just doesn’t like the word no and that’s what I got, a kid in Indonesia.”
After the painting was sold in 2008, experts matched it to one referenced in documents related to the Spinolas, a noble Genovese family whose members were patrons and friends of Rubens. It’s now believed that the military commander Ambrogio Spinola, whom Rubens painted several times, commissioned the work in the first decade of the 17th century. “Ambrogio Spinola was a solider fighting a war of religion. He was a devout Catholic and that’s why you have this choice of saint,” George Gordon of Sotheby’s

A museum in southern France suffered a terrible blow when experts declared that over half its paintings are forgeries, The Terrus museum, dedicated to the work of painter Étienne Terrus, apparently knew nothing of the fakes until an art historian informed them. “It’s a catastrophe,” the mayor of Elne, where the museum resides, tells the Telegraph. “I put myself in the place of all the people who came to visit the museum, who saw fake works of art, who paid an entrance fee. It’s intolerable and I hope we find those responsible.” Police have taken the fakes and are trying to find those responsible.

The Guardian reports the German multimillionaire has placed an ad seeking 10 people up to age 70 to come live in what he calls his "paradise," a 550-acre, $5.6 million estate in Awakino, on New Zealand's North Island. "If you are interested to live a life with a Group of Interesting people it can be a new life for you," reads the ad, which Stuff NZ reports was published twice in the New Zealand Herald. Reipen,

The contest featured 100 participants out of around 40 million who entered the online competition. Giersdorf, who won the solo event in front of a packed stadium, says he plans to save the prize instead of going on a spending spree. ”All I want is a new desk and maybe a desk for my trophy. Apparently 82 of the museum’s 140 works are phony, spotted at times because they contained buildings constructed after Terrus died in 1922. Acclaimed for his landscapes of French Catalonia, Terrus was close with artists Aristide Maillol and Henri Matisse and lived mostly in Elne, a town on the Tech River that’s less than three miles from the Mediterranean coast of Languedoc-Roussillon. The museum spent over $190,000 acquiring paintings they thought were his. But the Terrus likely isn’t alone: Art experts say at least one in five paintings in the world’s top museums may well be fake.
It was confirmed in April with an X-ray analysis, which also showed the work to be the original version of Rubens’ St. Sebastian Healed by Angels, held at Rome’s Galleria Corsini. The painter had initially depicted St. Sebastian facing the opposite direction with an arrow piercing his right thigh. There was also something scraped away from a corner of the painting before armor was added. As an X-ray analysis showed no major alterations to St. Sebastian Healed by Angels during its creation, experts conclude Rubens had already perfected his design through St. Sebastian Tended by Two Angels. Saudi Arabia will reduce how much oil it sends to the global economy, taking a unilateral step to prop up the sagging price of crude after two previous cuts to supply by major producing countries in the OPEC+ alliance failed to push oil higher, the AP reports. The new cut would likely push up oil prices in the short term, but the impact after that would depend on whether Saudi Arabia decides to extend it, said Jorge Leon, senior vice president of oil markets research at Rystad Energy. The move provides “a price floor because the Saudis can play with the voluntary cut as much as they like,” he said. The slump in oil prices has helped US drivers fill their tanks more cheaply and gave consumers worldwide some relief from inflation. “Gas is not going to become cheaper," Leon said. ”If anything, it will become marginally more expensive.”

Embracing the Future of Hospitality: Standing Out in 2023
By Dale J. Venturini, President/CEO, RI Hospitality Association (RIHA)
As a leader in the hospitality industry for more than 35 years, I have witnessed the evolution and transformation of so many aspects of our business. In 2023, the key to success has been found in embracing innovation, sustainability, and efficiency.
In a highly competitive market, what sets a restaurant or hotel business apart is its ability to create exceptional experiences. It is no longer just about providing good food, service, and accommodation, but also in curating memorable moments for guests. Successful businesses focus on personalization, ensuring that every guest feels valued and cared for. Whether it’s customizing menus that cater to specific dietary preferences or offering tailored recommendations based on guests’ preferences, attention to detail and genuine hospitality are crucial in making a lasting impression.
Start-ups across the industry are pushing boundaries and revolutionizing the way we experience hospitality. We see emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) being utilized to create immersive experiences for guests. New businesses are also harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline operations, from chatbots, assisting with reservations and queries to predictive analytics, optimizing pricing and inventory management. These innovations not only enhance efficiency, but also add a touch of novelty and excitement to the guest experience.
Sustainability has become an integral part of the hospitality industry, and businesses that prioritize ecofriendly practices are gaining a competitive edge. Guests are increasingly conscious of their environmental impact and seek out businesses that align with their values. Implementing sustainable practices, such as energyefficient systems, reducing food waste through careful inventory management, and partnering with local suppliers
for farm-to-table initiatives, not only contribute to a better planet, but also resonate with environmentally conscious guests.
Blending staffing and technology is a delicate balance that can truly elevate the guest experience. While technology can automate certain tasks and improve efficiency, it is essential to strike a harmonious blend with human interaction. Personalized service, warmth, and genuine hospitality are irreplaceable. We still work in a high-touch industry, but by leveraging technology to handle routine administrative tasks, staff can focus on delivering exceptional service, building genuine connections, and creating memorable experiences that guests will rave about.
To make hospitality businesses more efficient, a multifaceted approach is required. Investing in technology that streamlines operations, such as cloud-based property management systems, contactless check-in/check-out solutions, and automated inventory management, can significantly improve efficiency, and reduce administrative burdens. Moreover, leveraging data analytics can provide valuable insights into customer preferences and trends, allowing businesses to make informed decisions and tailor their offerings accordingly.
Furthermore, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and investing in staff training is crucial. By empowering employees with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed, they can confidently handle diverse situations and adapt to changing guest expectations. This, in turn, enhances efficiency and ensures consistent service excellence.
Collaboration is also vital for increased efficiency. Businesses can partner with other local establishments or share resources to optimize operations. Pooling procurement resources, implementing shared transportation solutions, and creating networks for staff exchange are just a few examples of how collaboration can drive efficiency and reduce costs.
The hospitality industry in 2023 thrives on innovation, sustainability, and efficiency. To stand out, businesses must focus on creating exceptional experiences that go beyond the ordinary. Taking advantage of emerging technologies, incorporating sustainable practices, blending staffing and technology, and implementing efficient strategies are all essential steps in shaping the future of hospitality. By embracing these elements, we can create a truly extraordinary industry that continues to delight guests and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of hospitality.

Winning Watermelon Recipes
by Julia Romano
Summer is in full force and if you’re looking to create something that will be a satisfying treat, there’s no better choice than sweet, juicy watermelon. As far as fruit goes, there is none more refreshing than a dish that includes cold watermelon for occasions such as cookouts, picnics, or maybe to surprise the kids with a special treat.
Below are some yummy, unique watermelon recipe ideas for whatever summer event you are planning, or for a fun treat that will put a smile on the kids.
JUICY WATERMELON CUPCAKES
Ingredients
8 cupcake shaped pieces of watermelon
8 cupcake liners
2 cups yogurt of choice or frosting
Dash sprinkles for garnish
Directions
1. Place the liners in an 8-cup cupcake tin.
2. Cut 3-inch thick slices of seedless watermelon.
3. Cut round cupcake sized pieces from the slices.
4. Put a watermelon cupcake in each liner.
5. Place a dollop of frosting (or yogurt) on each cupcake.
6. Decorate as desired with sprinkles.
WATERMELON CUCUMBER SALAD
Ingredients
8 cups cubed ripe seedless watermelon (1 8-pound watermelon)
2 organic mini cucumbers or ½ English cucumber (1 cup sliced)
2 ounces Feta cheese crumbles
Zest of 1/2 lemon
4 basil leaves
Sea salt, for garnish
Directions
1. Chop the watermelon into cubes.
2. Slice the cucumbers (if using an English cucumber, slice it into half moons).
3. Chop the basil. Zest the lemon.
4. Arrange the watermelon and cucumbers on a platter.
5. Sprinkle with feta crumbles, lemon zest, and sea salt.
6. Taste and adjust flavors as desired. (If you’d like, you can add freshly ground black pepper or a drizzle of olive oil.) Serve immediately.
7. If making ahead, refrigerate the cubed watermelon separately since it releases a lot of water after it is cut.
8. Assemble the salad immediately before serving.

SENSATIONAL WATERMELON SMOOTHIES
Ingredients
1 medium seedless watermelon
1 cup almond milk, or soy milk, or whole milk
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
3 tablespoons maple syrup
2 small wedges watermelon, garnish
2 sprigs mint, garnish
Directions
1. Cut the watermelon into small chunks of about 1/2 inch square. This size will be easier to blend into the smoothie. Reserve a few wedges, rind included, for the garnish.
2. Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper.
3. Place the fresh-cut watermelon on the cookie sheet, leaving space between the pieces.
4. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze for 1 hour.
5. If preparing the watermelon in advance for smoothies later in the week, once frozen, transfer to plastic storage bags and freeze in 3-cup portions until ready to use.
6. Once frozen, measure 3 cups of frozen watermelon and place in a blender.
7. Top the fruit with milk, yogurt, and maple syrup.
8. Blend until smooth.
CHARCUTERIE WATERMELON SNACK BOARD FOR THE KIDS
WATERMELON PIE
Ingredients
3 cup lime sherbet (or other green-tinted frozen dessert)
2 cup lemon sorbet (or other white-tinted frozen dessert)
3 cup blood orange gelato (or other red-tinted frozen dessert)
1/3 cup mini chocolate chips
Directions
Ingredients
Watermelon, cubed, balled, wedges, sticks, cutouts, and or skewers
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, halved Ham and cheese pinwheels
Sliced veggies of choice (we used cucumbers, carrots, sweet peppers and celery)
Sliced fruit of choice
Pretzels, crackers, etc.
Directions
1. Prepare all ingredients, chop veggies, cut out watermelon, slice fruit, make sandwiches.
2. Arrange all ingredients on a large board or platter.
3. Serve and enjoy!
1. Cover the bottom of a spring form pan with parchment paper, or line a round cake pan with plastic wrap (drape the wrap over the sides so that you can lift the pie from the pan when it’s ready).
2. Let 3 cups lime sherbet soften at room temperature for 10 minutes, then spread around the perimeter of the pan (creating the watermelon “rind”). Cover with plastic wrap and freeze for 45 minutes.
3. Next, add a ring of “white” using 2 cups softened lemon sorbet, and refreeze.
4. Stir 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips into 3 cups softened blood orange gelato, then fill the center with the mixture.
5. Freeze the entire dish until firm, about 6 hours. Slice the pie into wedges with a hot knife and serve.

THERE IS NO OFFSEASON FOR FITNESS
By Kevin Kearns | Burn With Kearns
This should be pretty apparent for most people. We all like to go on holiday a couple times a year. The challenge is trying to stick to your or some type of workout regimen, while trying to enjoy the beach and eat some ice cream. Okay, I eat frozen yogurt.
One of the concepts I learned from one of earlier mentors in the nutrition world is “athletes need a cheat meal once a week, but keep it reasonable.” The same holds true for us vacation fitness warriors. You must keep your workout regimen reasonable. The other concept is how to get a workout in, when your family does not realize what you’re doing.
For me, my family and I go to Cape Cod every year for 2 weeks. Now that I’m 50, I realized what Randy Couture said when they asked him how much time he takes off between training. His answer was 4 days. When asked why he responded by saying, “at my age, it hurts too much to come back.” I could not imagine taking 2 weeks off from training. When most people do, it’s even harder to come back. Since we are away for 2 weeks, we need two vehicles. This is a perfect opportunity to bring my kit with me. Again, I try to keep it reasonable. This year, I set up a circuit that could be done in 30 minutes or less. My concept was to keep moving and get it done so we can be off to have fun. However, that did not keep me from seeking other workouts in such activities as swimming and kayaking. Both are great workouts and they attack muscles differently, when you have not done either for a bit. My kit included the following.
50 Rage Soft Touch Atlas Ball
4 lb sledge hammers
Ko 8
40 lb Kettlebell
20 lbs med ball
My goal was 20 to 30 reps on each drill, with 3 rounds, and a “Grit Challenge” at the end . A “Grit Challenge” is something really taxing after your full workout, pushing you over the edge. Mine was the 50 lb Rage ball fully extended over my head and walking up a 20 percent grade for 100 yards. Yes, it was ugly.
Here’s the circuit:
Med ball twists 20 reps - Hold the medicine ball as far out as possible from your body and then rotate from side to side.
Med ball big circles - Hold the med ball over your head, as you squat down, draw a big circle in front of you from your head to your legs.
Single leg KB deadlift - Stand on one leg and hold the KB in the opposite hand. Now, bend your ankle, knee, and hip, and touch the KB to the ground.
KB Snatches - Stand with the KB in front of your legs, with a bent knee position. Next, as you expose up, launch the KB up until shoulder lock out position.
KO 8 - suspension rows - with the KO 8 or other suspension training, lean back with your arms straight and then, pull your body up to chest height.
KO8 - Pushups - with the suspension trainer set up, place your feet behind you, and your hands in the loops. Now, perform a push up as you normally would.
Rage Ball Fireman pick ups- with the ball between your legs, squat down and lift the ball to one shoulder. Now, place the ball back down and repeat on the other side.
Rage Ball Thai Knees - with Rage Ball in front of you, place both arms on the Rage ball in a plank position. Now, push the ball away and drag back in as you knee the ball.
Thor Hammer - sitting on the ground with your knees bent and feet elevated, take both the 4 lb sledge hammers and circle your head one way, then the other.
Iron T - in the same position as above, with the hammers behind you, extend the hammers out to the sides of your shoulders at the same time.
Grit Challenge - Take the 50 lb Rage Atlas ball and extend over your head. Now, try walking 100 yards.
As I have said, there is no off season, even when you’re on a vacation.

Becoming Comfortable at the Gym
By Stacie Venagro 2017 World Miss Fitness America Pro
How do you feel about working out at the gym? Many of my clients come to me and tell me that they aren’t comfortable at the gym, usually for a few main reasons. What I’m most commonly told is that they don’t know how to use the equipment and/or unsure about what exercises to do. Even if you are working with a personal trainer or taking classes with an instructor, utilizing a gym’s resources is a good way for you to do something else on days you are not working out with someone else. Another reason that clients tell me they are uncomfortable at the gym is that they feel self conscious working out in front of so many other people, which I believe goes right along with the first reason. If you are confident in your workout and are knowledgeable about how to use the equipment, you will probably feel much better about working out with other people around.
Let’s first go over some tips and simple exercises to maximize your workouts. How many times have you gone to the gym, jumped on the treadmill or another cardio machine, stayed on it for a while, and then left? While this isn’t necessarily always a bad thing, cardio alone on a regular basis isn’t going to get your best results. Strength training is the best way to build muscle, tone, burn fat, and it even improves bone density!
Dynamic Thoughts
By: Dr. Peter Dionisopoulos
Stretching may not be the answer for you. You read that right. If you are always stiff, stretching may not be the
answer for you. Now, that contradicts everything you have been taught on how to manage tightness and prevent injuries. So, why would we say this? Give me 2 minutes to explain and you will not think the same way about stretching again.
Welcome fall! I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to cooler weather, sweaters, apple picking, and pumpkin everything! It’s also the best time to savor the time spent outdoors before colder weather comes. If you haven’t already it’s a great time to focus your fitness routine a couple of times a week getting out of the house. England is well known for beautiful fall scenery, so why not get out and discover something new.
Exercise doesn’t have to monotonous, there are plenty of great places to hike locally. There’s a book called Weekend Hikes in Rhode Island by Ken Weber that I was introduced to awhile back. an excellent job of breaking down each destination with detailed directions, approximate walking the distance. A couple that are great for fall are Napatree Point and Browning Mill Pond- Roaring These are just a couple of the many that are close by. Always be safe when hiking new areas and research prior to heading out. As always never hike close to dark. If hiking new areas isn’t your a walk or run in your neighborhood or local park.
Have your workout planned and ready before you hit the gym. Create a weekly schedule for yourself, so you know exactly what you’re doing. If you are working with a trainer, ask them to help you create a weekly plan, so you know what to work on the days you are not with your trainer. Working with your trainer on this will ensure you’re not overworking anything. If you’re not working with a trainer, work different muscle groups each time.
Get your family involved in fitness! If you don’t have children take the dogs along with you. Children to get outside and explore nature. There’s plenty to explore to stimulate the mind and get some activity in. When you’re having fun exercise doesn’t feel like a task. Most dogs are always up for you can train them to run while you’re training g yourself. Alternate between jogging and walking second intervals to start off and work your way up from there. Bring water for you and your pet everyone hydrated.
Enjoy the beginning of this beautiful season and stay motivated. Just because it’s getting cooler out mean that it’s not a good time to start working out. Anytime is a great time to start!
I will include a general sample plan at the end of this article to help you. Core and cardio can be done with each workout, but doesn’t necessarily need to be the focus. If you’re working shoulders and back and using dumbbells, you are also most times inadvertently strengthening your core. If one of your shoulder exercises includes something like mountain climbers, this is giving you some cardio by raising your heart rate and working your core.
Almost every runner that has walked through our doors has the same complaint. “I have really tight hamstrings. I stretch them every day, and they always go back to being tight the next day.” Clearly, stretching did not solve their “tight hamstring” problem, and here’s why. When muscles feel very stiff, they could be at a maximal length or are protecting you, meaning it will not give up its shortened position. You can’t stretch a muscle that is at its maximum; if you push past this, it will just rip apart. If your muscles are in shortened positions, they may increase tension as you stretch them because they do not want to give up the position they have. The increase in perceived tightness and discomfort as you push through these ranges is similar to having your foot on the brake and gas at the same time. As the gas increases to overcome the brakes, the maximum discomfort is equivalent to pulling the emergency brake.
Stacie Venagro Fitness is located at 161 Macklin Street in Cranston.
Try to include a few exercises like this into each of your workouts to get the most out of it. While the strength training machines at the gym can be good for people who are unsure of their form, or who possibly have an injury, it may be best to stick with cable machines, dumbbells, floor exercises, kettlebells, and body weights. Furthermore, always research a particular exercise to make sure you are doing it correctly because incorrect form can lead to injury. Start with a weight that feels challenging after a few reps, but one that you can still lift without too much exertion. Don’t start with the highest possible weight because this can lead to injury. Start light and work your way up; pay no mind to what another person is doing because everyone starts somewhere different.
If you have a plan and clear goals in mind, this will boost your confidence. At first, when you start trying new workouts at the gym, you may feel uncomfortable. But, once you get yourself familiar with the equipment and start working out regularly, you will feel much better about your workouts, and before you know it, going to the gym will feel just as normal as shopping at the supermarket! Stepping outside of your comfort zone is the only way to grow. Don’t let the fear of discomfort stop you from reaching your goals. Remember, we ALL started somewhere, every single one of us.
No one has to use a gym to get fit. You can workout literally anywhere! The gym is great because no matter the weather, you will be protected from it indoors. Sometimes, it’s the best way for people to get focused because too many interruptions at home can hold us back. Exercise because you love your body, not because you hate it. Keep this mindset and you can achieve anything.

Using runners as an example, they may have hamstrings that are at maximum length. The solution is to increase the strength output of the hamstring muscles in a shortened position. This would be some form of an activity with a slightly bent knee like a bridge or hip hinge. Increasing the hamstring strength will allow the opposing muscles, like the hip flexors, to let go and reduce their tension (the typical shortened muscle). It will improve the muscle balance in the body. When the short muscles do not give up leverage, this is where foam rolling and soft tissue massages can become useful.
Take your time with movements like these and never push through discomfort, as it will only increase tension that you do not want. The goal is to create movement that is effortless, so you can improve performance. If you feel like you struggle with tightness like this, call or text us today!

Learning to Love and Accept Yourself
By: Susan Gazerro
This fitness article is not solely about physical fitness, this article is also about mental fitness. A lack of self-esteem, self-acceptance, and/or selflove can hold you back in so many aspects of your life. It’s easier said than done, but you truly need to embrace what makes you unique. We are all different and we all have unique gifts and talents. If you go through life never realizing this, it can prevent you from reaching your full potential. People who accept who they are can be more resilient to criticism. They are more confident and they don’t let other people’s opinions affect them.
Another suggestion is that you should also learn to let go of the things you cannot change. There are things we can control, but there are things we cannot, and we need to accept that fact. High levels of self-acceptance are linked to more positive emotions and one’s overall well-being. Self-acceptance can boost your mood and prevent stress and depression. Positive thoughts attract positive outcomes. Negative thoughts attract negative outcomes. You must learn to accept all parts of yourself, including anything you consider negative or undesirable. Most of us would prefer to change our undesirable or unacceptable parts, rather than accept them, which is why we struggle
with self-love and self-acceptance. This might sound contradictory, but self-acceptance doesn’t just mean accepting our negative qualities and giving up on changing them. It actually means being aware of our weaknesses and setting some goals to overcome them. When you set a goal and achieve it, you must reward yourself. You have to make yourself feel good about your accomplishments.
One way to help yourself is to identify your strengths. Identify your strengths and focus on them. What makes you unique? What are your talents and strengths? Identify them and be proud of them.
Having an awareness of our limitations is the first step on the path of personal growth. A lack of self-acceptance can affect the part of your brain responsible for controlling emotions. This can lead to a mental imbalance and emotional outbursts, which result from elevated anxiety, stress, or anger. A lack of self-acceptance limits your capacity for happiness, creating negative emotions.
Having self-love or self-acceptance also allows you to forgive yourself. According to Dr. Srini Pillay
26 Shop In RI
of Harvard Medical School, acceptance and forgiveness go hand and hand. He says that the inability to accept and forgive ourselves causes us to split into different parts. One that needs to be forgiven and the one that needs to forgive. These two parts are at odds with one another. Self-acceptance can help you bridge the gap between them, enabling you to forgive yourself for your mistakes. We all make mistakes. We all have regrets. We all have “should haves.” No one is perfect. The happier people just come to terms and accept what is.
Try doing some of the following daily. These will assist with learning how to accept yourself.
Practice gratitude. Every day, write down three to five things for which you are grateful. Reframe your negative thoughts. Negative beliefs are the voice of your inner critic.
Choose your support system. Make a list of the people you feel best around and try to spend most of your time with them.
Meditate.
Forgive yourself.
In the beginning of this article, I stated that this article was not about physical health, but rather mental health. However; there is no better medicine for depression or low self- esteem than exercise. Exercise triggers the chemicals in your brain that are responsible for your being happy. It’s science, not myth, that your mood changes for the better when you exercise. People with anxiety or depression don’t wake up and want to exercise. They want to just hide and not face the day. The best thing you can do, when feeling down, is to push yourself to get up and move. This will have an immediate positive impact on your mood. This also gives you a sense of accomplishment and you will feel good both physically and mentally. You also will feel a sense of purpose. Once you get into a routine, you won’t have it any other way. How many times do you hear “life is short?” We hear this, we even know this, but yet, we wait around for changes to come to us instead of us making the changes ourselves. Life is not easy, but you have to stay focused on being the best you you can be. Feeling and accepting yourself
helps one to deal with anything they are faced with. Stress and worry only rob you of your happiness. Again, if you’re feeling your best, any and all problems will be much easier to deal with. Try this and start living!
Quote of the month:
“Being negative only makes a difficult journey more difficult. You may be given a cactus, but you don’t have to sit on it.”
You will inevitably be faced with some type of difficulty, but you don’t have to let it control you. A positive mind will result in a positive outcome, every time!

4 Tips for Combining Finances With Your Partner
By: Carrie McPherson
If you’re in a long-term committed relationship, you may contemplate combining finances with your partner. Maybe you’re getting married, moving in together – or both. Or, perhaps you already share expenses like rent, groceries, and utility bills – and life would be easier if you pooled your money together to cover such expenses.
Whatever the situation, combining finances comes with many considerations and complexities. As with most things related to money, it helps to have a plan. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind:
1. Communicate early and often. When it comes to relationships, you’ve probably heard the advice that communication is key. This adage holds true when combining finances, as well. In addition to sharing information about your cash, investments, and other assets, be transparent about any existing debt you and your partner hold – whether from college loans, credit cards, or other liabilities. You owe it to each other to be upfront about the mix of assets and obligations you’re bringing into the relationship.
Next, discuss your spending habits, goals, and feelings about your current financial situation and aspirations for the future. Even if you and your partner agree on most things, you may find that you have clashing views on money, particularly if one partner earns more money than the other, or if your upbringings were markedly different. Getting all of this out in the open early can help you manage your differences and work better as a team.
2. Choose your insurance coverage. Insurance policies can provide a layer of protection over your finances, and may help you feel more confident about your ability to handle unexpected events. Make it a priority to review your individual life, disability, health, car, and home insurance policies before deciding what coverage you would like, as a couple. If either of you receive benefits through an employer, pay attention to the qualifying events and dates for when you can change your elections.
3. Update your beneficiaries and will.
Thinking about what happens if one of you passes away may not be romantic, but it is an important step in protecting your loved ones financially. Discuss with your partner how you’d like assets to be divided, and consider formalizing your wishes in a will. Also, update beneficiaries on your financial accounts (i.e., checking, saving, and retirement accounts) and assets, if necessary. This is especially important if you were previously married and have your former spouse listed as a beneficiary. In the same vein, if you want your partner to share ownership in any vehicle or property you own, update the titles accordingly.
4. Set goals together.
Now that you’re earning, spending, and saving to support your life together, why not formalize the dreams you share for your future? Set aside time to discuss your short and long-term goals, such as buying a house, pursuing higher education, or retiring early. Bringing in the expertise of an experienced financial advisor can help pave the way as you work to achieve your biggest priorities – together.

Understand Your Financial Situation Before Cosigning Your Child’s Loan
By: Edward Pontarelli Jr.
As your child heads off to college or starts life as an independent young adult, he or she will likely face new financial responsibilities, such as a car purchase, rent, or college tuition payments. Given their lack of credit history, it may be difficult for them to obtain a loan without a parent or another adult cosigning for the loan. Your natural inclination may be to help them out and sign on the dotted line, but before you do, make sure you’re clear on the terms of the loan and what it may mean for your finances.
Cosign with your eyes wide open
Even though you may not consider it “your loan” if you cosign, lenders will identify you as one of the borrowers. That means you may be at risk if certain circumstances arise.
Keep in mind:
• If any of the balance remains unpaid by the borrower (in this scenario, your child), you, as the cosigner, will be required to repay it.
• If your child defaults or even misses one or two payments, it can damage your credit record.
• Even without a default, other lenders may look at the cosigned loan as an additional liability you will need to pay, which could also affect your credit record.
• In some states, the creditor has the right to collect payment from you, as the cosigner, without first trying to collect from your child
• If you were to pass away, it could trigger “auto default” provisions in the loan contract. This would require your child to immediately pay the debt. Regulators discourage this practice, but it still exists in some loan agreements.
Steps to protect yourself
Fortunately, there are often alternatives to cosigning a loan. For example, if your child is enrolled in college, they may be eligible for federal student loans or financial aid. Another option, if you can afford it, may be to lend your child money directly – thereby, for-
going the paperwork and stipulations introduced by a third-party lender. If you decide to take this action, make sure you and your child have a clear and consistent understanding of the terms of the loan, including a repayment schedule for which he or she will be accountable to follow.
If you do decide to cosign a loan, take steps to help protect yourself:
• Read the fine print and fully understand the terms of the loan and the expectations of the lender.
• Avoid pledging property, such as a car, to secure their loans, as it could create additional risk.
• Arrange to receive duplicate copies of all paperwork and ensure you have complete online access to the account so you can stay on top of your child’s record of repayment.
In short, treat the situation with the same diligence that you would if you were borrowing money yourself for your own purposes, in the future.

Christopher Medeiros found happiness and success helping others with their future.
by Mark Berger
Christopher Medeiros found happiness and success helping others with their future.
Most people have choices to make when it comes to their careers. Will they stay in their current place of employment? Or, will they search for “greener pastures” somewhere else? It’s an age-old question that does not have a definite right or wrong answer. What someone chooses not only impacts their future, but that of their loved ones, their old employer, and potential new employer. That is a primary reason why such a move is fraught with stress and a fear of the unknown.
That was the case with Christopher Medeiros. He spent a decade as a correctional officer and was unsure if that should be his life’s work. At some point, he wanted to pursue a career that involved
helping people and seeing their futures grow. He was unsure if leaving a steady job to strike out on his own was the best decision for him and his family.
Medeiros took the leap to see if his experience working with others would come to fruition. More than a year ago, he accepted the role as investment advisor representative of Gorra Financial Group in Cranston. His goal is helping clients maximize their money so that they may live comfortably in their golden years.
Medeiros said that there is more to investing than picking suitable portfolio options. There is the human element that needs to be cultivated before one can focus on positive results. That happens through understanding what each client hopes to achieve. He noted how education becomes vital in the process.
“There is no minimum amount of money to work with me, and to offer assistance to anyone looking for it because financial literacy is essential to longterm success. No one is taught the basics in school,

and it’s important for me to get this information out to everyone,” Medeiros said.
He noted that people should consider saving when they are younger, so they can save as much as possible and have that growth potential over time, however, many young people are not thinking as much about their future (that may include marriage, children, buying a home, and travel, among other things), as much as their “right now.” Someone should be available to show them the advantages of saving early, so they can look forward to reaping possible rewards later.
When they meet with Medeiros, it becomes clear that their interests are his primary focus. With an eye toward the unknown, he works with his clients to form the best-case scenarios, while keeping a sharper eye on potential risks, and mitigating them when they happen.
With the market being so volatile for the last several years, safeguards must be put in place. Medeiros also strives to see what trends are favorable and which ones to avoid. While there are no guarantees when it comes to investing, Medeiros finds ways to help ensure his clients are protected, especially during times of uncertainty.
“I’ve helped many people who have entered into the uncertainties of retirement by coming up with ways to protect their money, and distribute their money through retirement, so they don’t have to worry about running out of it before they die,” Medeiros explained.
As for the near future, Medeiros feels that there are several variables to consider regarding the nation’s economy. Some of those concerns include, but are not limited to: rising interest rates, devaluation of the dollar, and shortage of real estate investments. His assessment is that the country will continue seeing a consolidation of the market until the country gets its collective feet back underneath themselves before progressing forward towards the future.
Medeiros’ current emphasis is aiding in his clients’ success. “l would challenge anyone who may have doubts about what their current plan is to
reach out to me, and let me make sense of it all. I love working with people who work as essential employees (law enforcement, nurses, doctor, etc.), or anyone who struggles with finding a work/life balance by juggling their small business and their families. Those are the ones I can relate to the most,” he said.
Medeiros graduated from Bryant University in 2006, and has been a life-long Rhode Island resident. He grew up in Warren, RI, and currently lives in Providence with his three children: Isabella, Myles, and Reese.
When he is not working or enjoying time with his children, Chris golfs, reads, and maintains relationships with the people who have always encouraged him. He is also an avid Liverpool FC fan of the English Premiere Football (Soccer) League. His future is to leave a legacy for his children.
He is an investment advisor representative for OneAmerica Securities, Inc., and has worked at Gorra Financial Group with his managing partner, Joshua Gorra, since January 2022.
Gorra Financial Group is located on 875 Oaklawn Avenue Ste. 301, in Cranston.

Soft Washing
My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www.LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting.com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column!
Soft washing is a cleaning technique used to remove dirt, grime, algae, and other debris from the exterior of a home or building. It’s a gentler alternative to pressure washing that uses low pressure and special cleaning solutions to clean and sanitize surfaces. Soft washing can be a useful tool for homeowners or contractors looking to maintain a property’s appearance, and to protect it from damage caused by algae and other contaminants. Additionally, soft washing is an excellent way to help prepare a home’s exterior for painting.
Before beginning any exterior cleaning or painting project, it’s essential to assess the condition of the home’s exterior. If there is mold, mildew, or other growth, softwashing is an excellent way to remove it. Soft washing can also help to remove stains, discoloration, and other debris that may be detracting from the home’s appearance.
When soft washing a home’s exterior, it’s crucial to use the correct equipment and cleaning solutions. A professional soft washer will have the necessary equipment and experience to safely and effectively clean your home’s exterior. They’ll also use a cleaning solution specifically formulated for softwashing, which is designed to break down and remove dirt, grime, and other contaminants.
The soft washing process typically involves spraying the cleaning solution onto the exterior of the home, allowing it to sit for a short period, and then rinsing it off with low-pressure water. Depending on the severity of the contamination, multiple applications of the cleaning solution may be necessary. A professional soft washer will be able to assess the condition of your home’s exterior and determine the appropriate cleaning method and solution.
Once your home’s exterior has been soft washed, it’s important to let it dry completely before painting. Moisture trapped beneath the surface can lead to bubbling, cracking, and other problems with the paint job. In some cases, it may be necessary to wait several days or even weeks for the home’s exterior to dry fully. A professional soft washer can advise
you on the appropriate drying time for your home’s specific needs.
Soft washing is also an excellent way to maintain the appearance and integrity of your home’s exterior. Regular soft washing can help to prevent the buildup of dirt, grime, and other contaminants that can cause damage over time. Additionally, soft washing can aid in preparing your home’s exterior for painting by removing any existing contaminants, which may interfere with the adhesion of the paint.
If you’re considering hiring someone to soft wash your home’s exterior, it’s important to choose a reputable company with experience in soft washing. Look for a company that uses high-quality equipment and cleaning solutions, and has a proven track record of successful soft washing projects. Additionally, as with many similar types of services, it might be wise to ask for references and check online reviews before choosing a soft washing company.
If you’re considering soft washing your home’s exterior, be sure to choose a reputable company with experience in soft washing, as well as a proven track record of successful projects. With the right care and maintenance, your home’s exterior can remain beautiful and functional for years to come.

Kindred Women Travelers See The World Differently
by Mark Berger
Being able to see the world requires the gifts of time, money, and a willingness to be adventurous. This is particularly true for older people who have the time because of retirement and are looking to meet others and do something fun. For these women who are looking to connect with other like-minded women, there is an outlet they can use to gain that experience—and make new friends in the process.
That is the genesis of Kindred Women Travelers, a Cumberland-based company devoted to engaging small groups of women to see the world. They embark on one to two week excursions that can be as close as New Orleans or as far away as Vietnam. Each trip has its own unique charm and ability for the group to grow from each other.
Owner Maryann O’Connor is at the center of these trips. She saw an opportunity several years ago, while on another trip, to send people to exotic locales, but with a twist.
“I was at the Grand Canyon on a tour and, while I had a great time, I started thinking about ways I would do things differently,” said O’Connor. “I didn’t want to eat breakfast at 7:00 AM or eat
dinner right at 5:00 PM. I didn’t want to be tied down to a rigid schedule. I wanted to see and do different things on my own schedule.”
That’s when she had the idea to do it her way.
She said that her itineraries deal with seeing the oft less-traveled roads. It’s not just about seeing the usual attractions, but rather, the ability to see places and do other activities that are not on the brochures. Maybe it’s spending time with an indigenous group in Belize, spending the day learning how to cook the local cuisine in Mexico, listening to local music, or visiting local artisans in their homes. There is usually a day off for the travelers to choose whatever they want to do, otherwise they travel with the group, so there is little planning on the traveler’s part.
A big caveat to her trips is the small groups. When she went to the Grand Canyon, it was with a group of 25 to 30 people. It didn’t feel personal to her. It became one of the reasons why she wanted to form this endeavor. Her trips are organized for small groups with a maximum of 5-8 women. This allows for flexibility in customizing itineraries to meet the interests of the group. They stay at a home or villa, which gives them the opportunity to really get to know each other and make lasting friendships. The group bonds over the activities they participate in and
58 Shop In RI
the frequent conversations amongst the women. This also offers the opportunity to just chill out if they need a break from exploring.
O’Connor said that she goes through the process of planning the trips with an eye toward fun and another toward education.
“I do a lot of research that involves where we stay, what we will do and see,” she said. “I hire local tour guides to take the group on driving and/or walking tours to see the area from a local’s point of view. I find homes that will accommodate the group, with each woman having her own room. I usually hire a chef for the first night to prepare dinner for us, after our long day of travel. I work to ensure that every detail gets taken care of and the group only has to focus on having the time of their lives.”
Some of the locations her groups have gone include: The Azores, Belize, New Orleans, Mexico, and Italy. In 2024, she plans on trips to Costa Rica (January), Morocco (spring), a return to Italy (May), Greece (June), Ireland (September), and India (November). Maryann hopes to book a trip to one of the National Parks in the coming year, as well.
Their trips are meant to be educational, as well as an escape from our everyday lives. They’ll take in the sights, learn about the land, the people and the culture. At the same time, they will slow down a bit, not rush out the door at 7:00 am, and take the time to appreciate the beauty that surrounds them. Once in-country, tours are provided by local guides who are licensed and insured in their area.
Maryann cares about the impact her trips have on the environment and strives to attract responsible travelers. She avoids destinations that are being destroyed by over-tourism, and encourages her groups to be responsible travelers by staying away from single-use water bottles, treating the house as if it were their own in terms of conserving energy, eating locally grown food, and shopping from locals.
Before beginning this endeavor, Maryann has managed her own bookkeeping business for the past 16 years. She still works part-time for clients,
but sees Kindred Women Travelers as her future.

Satisfaction is Key at Toyota of Smithfield
By Mark Berger
Customers going into a dealership need to feel they will be treated fairly and receive the best deals for either their trade-in or new vehicle purchase.
To be guaranteed this treatment, customers can feel at ease going to Toyota of Smithfield, located on George Washington Highway (Rte. 116). No matter what type of vehicle you want, their staff is trained and ready to help make the process flow smoothly.
General Manager John Durrani hopes those looking for their next vehicle consider speaking with the dealership’s sales representatives in order to take advantage of several dealer incentives.
“Anyone trading in either their used or certified, pre-owned cars, for example, will receive an additional $1,000 over book value, ” he said. “There won’t be a better time for anybody to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more now than it’s ever going to be worth.”
The dealership has back orders for weeks, and sometimes
months, for certain makes and models. Durrani said that the market continues to be “crazy.” With few options on their lots, trade-in requests have become crucial.
People currently have the means to either purchase a new vehicle or one of the very-limited used selections on the premises. The request for used vehicles remains extremely high.
“We are appealing to the public for your used vehicles. Simply put, we still don’t have the inventory to adequately fulfill orders,” Durrani said.
To help facilitate the need for more certified, pre-owned vehicles onto their lot, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of the book value for any used cars. It does not matter whether the customer decides to purchase a car from their lot or not.
“We will buy your trade, even if you don’t purchase a car from us,” Durrani added.
The dealership holds a monthly private sale. This month’s events are scheduled for Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, by appointment only. Managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives.
The Dealership’s Peace of Mind Purchase Process means no hassles over pricing, trade-in values, cash back and rebate incentives offered up front, and the best available leasing and financing terms, also up front. Durrani said that this is just part of the all-around, customer-driven experience he implemented to ensure the process does not get bogged down in miscommunication.

Why Should You Market Your Company?
by Mark Berger
Something interesting happens when either individuals or groups decide to go into business. There is the excitement of creating a new path. Or, inventing a product or service that resonates with audiences and the community alike. Then, there could be the notoriety associated with operating a new company. You could become a “Beacon of Light” for generations to come.
In all of the work to get to that point, many small companies forget one small, but ultimately fatal detail that can sink any new endeavor:
They forget to market themselves.
ANY business can have the best products, customer service, attention to detail, location, etc. However, it comes down to spreading the word regarding who you are and what you do. Avoiding the last two points makes everything
else moot. People will not come to your place of business because they do not know you exist. It makes sense to many until one realizes that most business plans exclude marketing strategies.
Show me a business that doesn’t market themselves, and I will show you a company that closes their doors forever in a year or two.
If you get over the first hurdle of businesses needing a marketing plan in order to survive, then the next obstacle may have you curling up in the fetal position:
How does someone write about themselves?
It’s not particularly easy for many people to accomplish this. Worse, there are far too many people who HATE writing. This isn’t something that becomes a high priority. Yet, it absolutely

must be done. If a business owner can’t articulate its mission, then how will potential customers know what they offer? People are not spending much time researching a company. Instead, they will go somewhere else—most likely another competitor—who is better positioned.
The next issue is sending a story out. Where should the information go? That depends on the audience one wants to reach. Are they looking to concentrate on a small area? Or, are they looking for a broader reach? Knowing that first leads to targeting the right outlets. A store in Lincoln is not necessarily going to market themselves to Westerly, unless they provide a service that would entice someone from southern Rhode Island to make the trip.
Sending out information to local media outlets takes time and patience. With the ever-changing landscape of the media, it can be tough to find the right contact or the correct place to forward the information. Moreover, there are more than the traditional media outlets to consider. Social media, podcasts, and TEDtalks are some other ways to spread the message.
There is one final aspect that most people fail to perform consistently. It often means the difference between being noticed and falling into the spam folder. Many people don’t think about doing this, but it can be advantageous to those who use it properly.
It’s called, “The Power of F.U.”
In other words, “Following Up.”
Many people never find out if their materials ever made it through. That’s a problem—for the sender. How will they know if the editor or reporter got the news? They won’t, in this case. Too often, the sender thinks it got there, when it could have ended up in spam, misdirected, or kicked out for other reasons. Calling the contact can turn a “dead” story into a “live” one.
Also, following up takes a lot of time. If someone tries just once or twice to reach somebody and nothing happens, then they stop. They lose their chance to prove their story’s worth. This is where a professional with experience in marketing, public relations, and/or media relations can make an impact. They are trained in dealing with editors and reporters and can help move a story.
One case involved a business owner who lived in Northern Rhode Island, owned businesses there, and planned a firsttime event in the area, during the holidays. The information got sent to a local media outlet. The practitioner tried nine times before getting a hold of someone in this particular newsroom. The newsroom representative told the caller to send it over to them personally. They did…three more times!
There are very few people who will try connecting a dozen or more times to get a story noticed. This practitioner did and was rewarded with a front-page story in that outlet for the client.
Persistence pays off for the people who follow up and who make something positive happen. The way to successfully navigate a business is to do the marketing themselves. If they find it difficult, then they can find someone well versed in that field to guide them.
The choice is yours.
