Embracing the Hospitality Industry’s New Reality

It is difficult to fully comprehend the massively detrimental impact that the COVID-19 pandemic and the everchanging public safety regulations that it spawned had on the hospitality industry and our businesses over these last two-plus years. We are still recovering and recalibrating our business models and will be continuing to do so for some time to come. Despite the many challenges that our hotels, restaurants, and industry businesses are dealing with, we are working within our means to move forward and accept our “new reality.”

Our industry’s operators are adapting on the go; business has been good – there is certainly pent-up customer demand, but operating our businesses is becoming more difficult. From the ongoing staffing crisis, resulting from “The Great Resignation,” to unresolved supply-chain disruptions and increased product and operational costs due to rampant inflation, our industry faces an uphill battle in the years to come.

Labor shortages and rising labor costs are not going away any time soon and our industry can do more to attract, retain, and incentivize workers. All of our industry’s businesses should take a look at how they treat their employees, if they are being fairly compensated for the work that is expected of them and strategize how to improve productivity in the workplace. New ways of showing value, in addition to dollars, are necessary to attract the best workers.

Fortunately, we are seeing many businesses respond with creativity and confidence. Incorporating many of the lessons and solutions we learned during the pandemic like investing in web-based solutions and new technologies including robotic restaurant workers, will allow our businesses to transition more smoothly into our industry’s next chapter, as we all move past this public health crisis.

There are factors within our control that will allow our industry to experience a stronger rebound post-pandemic.

Enhancing the customer experience by improving safety, incorporating sustainability into our business models, offering updated amenities, and more, will help us to “keep up with the times.” Building trust with our patrons is crucial to our mission and will only serve to improve our industry’s outlook, both short-term and long-term.

While the pace at which we recover is not fully within our control, putting our foot on the gas does help us get to the finish line faster. For those struggling to adapt, please consider looking at what your successful peers are doing and try to pull inspiration from that. Do not be afraid to start a conversation or collaboration or to ask for a little help.

By Brian J. Lowney Local entrepreneur Steve Cortinheiro knows how difficult it is to lose weight and to develop a healthier lifestyle.

Like many folks, he recalls enjoying cheeseburgers and fatty, high calorie foods while packing on the pounds and watching the scale continue to climb.

Cortenheiro honestly admits that he didn’t invest 100 percent of his efforts to improve his lifestyle.

“I just achieved partial results,” he tells. “After having a deep conversation with Mary, something just clicked and I made a total commitment to stay on the plan seven days a week.”

While the husband and father of two was busy with his business career and family, Cortinheiro was discouraged and concerned about his physical health.

During the next three months, Cortinheiro lost 30 pounds and was energized by his success.

“I weighed almost 300 pounds,” the Rehoboth resident begins.

“I had no energy and I was very unhappy. I didn’t know too much about nutrition. After dinner, I would just chill out on the couch.

“I learned about nutrition and I took it seriously,” he emphasizes. “I set myself a goal to lose another 25 pounds and I fell in love with that lifestyle. I kept losing weight for a total of 80 pounds.”

“I didn’t eat enough food throughout the day and I would eat dinner at night and I’d be so hungry that I would over eat,” he shares. “I didn’t know how to eat healthy.”

While he’s learned many valuable lessons on his wellness journey, one important thing that he knows is the importance of eating smaller, healthier meals more frequently throughout the day.

Six years ago, Cortinheiro’s wife Nancy began taking Zumba classes from Mary Santana, who also helped friends to lose weight through exercise and diet. Santana owns “Shape It Up Fitness Studio” in East Providence and works with a few clients.

“She was my wellness coach,” he continues. “She helped me to lose weight and taught me about nutrition. She started me with healthy protein meals and shakes.”

According to Cortinheiro, getting on track wasn’t easy after eating improperly for most of his life.

“Three months after I started the program, I was ready to quit,” he tells. “I felt like the program wasn’t working for me. I was only good Monday through Thursday with being committed to the program. The other days I was having lunch or dinner or both with family and friends. I was on a yo-yo diet.”

“I feel good,” he attests. “I work out 4-6 times a week at a local fitness center and it is an important part of my routine.”

Once he began to shed the pounds, Cortinheiro was inspired to help others to lose weight and change their attitude about weight loss and healthy eating.

“A lot of people struggle with a variety of issues,” he continues.

“Food, alcohol, drugs, to name a few. Sometimes we turn to these things just to numb the pain.

“If I look at a cheeseburger, for example, I can gain weight,” he notes. “For some people, eating is not an issue but for others, it can be a serious problem. Some people over eat, while others can under eat, which is another problem.”

After much discussion, Cortinheiro and Santana decided in

2018 to launch a food prep company that they named “Naked Foods RI” and the pair has never looked back.

“We started with meals, shakes and teas,” the entrepreneur continues. “We started with 10 meals and sold-out the first day.

Our business just took off.”

Adding that Naked Foods RI, offers customers “a different way of eating,” says that guests can enjoy soups, meals, delicious salads, vegetarian and vegan meals. In addition to a variety of breakfast specialties, sandwiches and wraps, customers can meet with family and friends to savor a variety of coffees and teas, protein shakes, smoothies and cooler drinks.

One vegetarian meal that shouldn’t be missed is the Portobello Veggie Pizza which features two portobello mushrooms topped with mozzarella cheese, marinara sauce, peppers and onions.

Another taste treat is the Asian Zing Meatballs, made with 93 percent lean ground turkey, sweet and spicy sauce and served over jasmine rice and roasted broccoli.

Guests might also enjoy the Vegetable Fried Rice, which features a tasty combination of red and green peppers, broccoli, peas, mushrooms and brown rice.

Cortinheiro adds that guests of all ages stop by to enjoy protein shakes in flavors such as Banana Split, Cafe Mocha, French Vanilla, Peanut Butter Cookie, Pineapple Cupcake and Wedding Cake.

“Last November, we opened our second location and things continue to go well,” he adds. “We are looking forward to meeting our new guests in Warren.”

It’s that time of year again, ‘folks’ and ‘jazzies!’ The Ocean State will bring with it this July, the two most beloved festivals that crowds of visitors from all over look forward to each year.

Summer 2022 will be unlike the last two years, as people can now come together and escape all of the limitations of the pandemic. What could be better than a return to “normal,” spending time with family and friends in the gorgeous seaside city of Newport, RI, while enjoying a weekend of the ultimate in entertainment?

Newport is well known as the Ocean State’s most flocked to city, especially during the summer months. There are endless outdoor activities to engage families, friends, and anyone else who are looking to make memories, especially at RI’s two most renowned music Festivals.

Folk and Jazz are both very expressive types of music that diehard fans cherish. As such, Little Rhody’s delivery of these two Festivals bring together thousands of music lovers from all over.

What is Jazz music?

Jazz is a genre of diverse music that pulls together a great number of styles. First performed in dance clubs, jazz has evolved to now being performed in symphony halls as well. Being that jazz is a complex music genre, it is studied globally at many different colleges and universities.

Considered an “art form,” jazz was initially introduced by the African Americans in the early 20th century in New Orleans, Louisiana. With a melting pot of all backgrounds and cultures, New Orleans was the perfect city to embrace this unique combination of music style as entertainment. Dixieland jazz was inspired by this part of the country with its eclectic and lively tunes, along with soulful harmonies mixed with type of traditional and generally rural music that originally was passed down through families and other small social groups.

THE PERFECT LOBSTER ROLL Our annual BOYZ weekend at my house is over, and it was a huge success. No small factor in that success was the food we all brought to the table. I made my lobster rolls, and got thumbs-up from all who tried them.

Last year, I was having dinner at The Boat House restaurant in Tiverton, RI, with my buddy, Lee, who lives in Maine half the year, and we started talking about what makes the perfect lobster roll.

Often, when you go to a restaurant and order one, they’ll first ask if you want it cold with mayonnaise or warm with butter. (A warm lobster roll with melted butter, we were told by our bartender, Cayce, is called “Connecticut style.”) The three of us discussed the mayonnaise-to-lobster ratio, and other significant factors. The final conclusion was that everyone likes their lobster roll a little differently.

It’s certainly easy to go to a clam shack or seafood restaurant to get one, but nothing beats making one yourself.

One of our favorite restaurants here in Rhode Island is Fluke Newport in…well…Newport. We’ve dined there for years, but big changes happened last summer when they hired a new chef. We met Chef Eddie Montalvo just after he had arrived at Fluke, and we were impressed with his new menu.

We came back for another visit just over a month ago, and meeting Eddie again, we thought we would invite him and his family to our home someday for a visit.

Well, that “someday” is tomorrow, and the reality that I’m going to be cooking for a real chef for the first time in my life is making me a bit nervous!

When I make my own lobster rolls, freshness is key. I always start with live lobsters. I get them from my lobster man I went to Twitter for some help. Maintaining Your Summer Body Susan Gazerro You work so hard to achieve your best “summer body,” but maintaining it is always the challenge.

I’m going to list some helpful hints to keep you on track, but you must keep a strong mind to be successful. You must continue telling yourself, “I’m not seeking to achieve this to feel this way for just a few weeks. I’m making this effort to feel and look good for the rest of my life.”

Following are a few helpful tips to keep that healthy momentum going.

1. Continue to eat right (healthy). What does that mean? Your diet should consist of lots of fruits and vegetables. Very few carbs and sugar.

Yes, we need carbs, but at one meal a day, not all three. Carbs and sugar store fat. They do not burn fat like protein and fiber do, so limit your carbs and sugar. The order of burning fat is that your body tries to burn the carbs first, but it’s a slow process; once complete, it starts burning fat, so if you limit your carbs, your body will start burning fat that much quicker. overload is detrimental to your health. Sugar is bad in general, however; I am going to contradict myself by saying you should use real sugar over the substitutes like equal, sweet and low, etc. Sugar substitutes are not good for your body or health.

2. Eat! Don’t starve yourself. Listen to your body. If you are hungry, eat. The worst thing you can do is to starve yourself. Your metabolism needs food to work. Starving yourself may initially drop pounds, but this is not long term weight loss.

You need to find the right foods that you enjoy and eat them in a healthy, balanced way.

3. Hydrate. Water is a natural detox. If you drink enough water in a day, you will lose weight. Now, there are some days when I can’t get enough water and there are other days when I have to force it down. Make it a habit to drink water. It truly is the most natural detox there is and it’s free. So, keep yourself well hydrated.

4. Exercise. Now, I understand to some extent that exercise is a chore and not enjoyable for everyone.

However, you don’t have to go to a gym or run a marathon. All you have to do is move your body.

Our bodies are built and meant to be mobile. I have given these helpful hints so many times, but here they are again: Park far enough away from where you are entering any place you go so you can get extra steps in. Take the stairs, not the elevator.

Carry your groceries in the house one bag at a time.

Take a walk during lunch. There are so many ways to exercise your body, without calling it “exercise.”

Your body, but more so your health will thank you for it. As far as food, there is a quote that reads, “It is expensive to eat healthy, but it’s more expensive to be in the hospital.”

5. Focus on the core. A strong core makes the movement of all other body parts easier. I have a standard question when I have a new client. “What body part do you think I want to help you make the strongest?” I get everything from biceps, quads, back, etc. My response is, however, “your mind.”

When you have a strong mind, you can do anything.

The second body part I want to make strong is the core. When the core is strong, strengthening everything else is easier.

truth be told, in my opinion, it’s not worth it. The other trick is to have just a couple of bites and be done. That way, you at least had a taste, but you don’t need a whole piece of cake or a whole cup of ice cream or a whole bag of chips. A taste is truly all you need. We keep on eating because it’s in front of us and the temptation can be just too strong.

Such a cliche, but maintaining your summer body is a lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy, look good, feel good body is a lifestyle. When you find healthy, enjoyable foods, you never feel like you are on a diet. I never feel as though I am depriving myself of anything. I love what I eat, and when I want to have a snack or a sweet, I do. I just don’t do it often because number one, I do not crave it. Secondly, my brain tells me that I will feel awful afterwards, and if

Kicks off its Second Annual “RI Small Business Pitch Contest”

If necessity is the mother of invention, then HarborOne Bank wants to provide the financial backing to see those ideas through to its successful completion.

This year, marks the 2nd Annual Small Business Pitch Contest in Rhode Island. The Bank is conducting their seventh annual pitch contest for small businesses located in Massachusetts.

“We had a number of extraordinary small business owners participate last year in our first ever Rhode Island Pitch Contest,” said Stephen Gibbons, Regional VP, Commercial Lending, HarborOne Bank. “It is rewarding to recognize and have the ability to support these small business owners, who are making positive contributions to our communities.”

The small business pitch contest is designed to provide the opportunity for area entrepreneurs to present their business plans and ideas in a constructive, fun and friendly forum. Each applicant will have five minutes to present a business plan and growth strategy. Participants will be judged on presentation, marketing and sales strategy and financials.

in 2022,” said Sheila Farragher, Manager, HarborOne U. Eight finalists from the application pool will be selected to give a five-minute presentation about their product or service explaining what it is, its benefits and their plans to spend the $10,000 award should they win. “There were a lot of wonderful plans from the sample last year and we expect there will be many more firsts looking for their break.” she added.

In 2021, first place and the $10,000 prize went to Azure Cygler, owner of Rhody Wild Sea Gardens in Narragansett. She is a sea gardener who is growing kelp for climate change. Her goal was to become one of the first sea-based farms to join an establish carbon removal marketplace platform.

These types of marketplaces are rigorous and trusted and allow a direct and verified platform for individuals and businesses to offset their carbon footprints. The verification process is extensive, proven and necessary. She used the funds to pay for the third-party verification process, making Rhody Wild the first kelp farm to do so.

Among the qualifications for submitting an entry include: applicants must be at least 18 years of age; the company must be for profit and not have been a previous HarborOne Small Business Pitch contest winner. Applicants do not have to be HarborOne Bank customers to enter.

This year’s contest is scheduled to take place on September 27th at HarborOne Bank, 180 Washington St., Providence. Applications will be accepted through its website starting on July 15 and will continue until August 31. Applicants will be notified by September 10 and finalists will be invited to pitch their business idea or model.

On the evening of the 27th a panel of judges will decide which idea will win the grand prize.

Make Sure Your Business is Properly Protected By: Carrie McPherson If you own a small business, you know the importance of maintaining its financial stability. Everything from managing cash flow to keeping current with tax liabilities is crucial to ensure you’re able to keep your company profitable and in compliance with the law.

But even businesses with pristine balance sheets can be impacted by events outside their owners’ control. Accidents, natural disasters, lawsuits and cybercrime are just a handful of risks that threaten to undermine the financial health of today’s small businesses. That’s why it’s imperative that the entrepreneurs running them have proper protections in place.

If it’s been a while since you’ve reviewed your company’s insurance coverage, putting it off longer could leave your business susceptible to significant risk. Fortunately, there are steps you can take today to safeguard your company and your livelihood.

Here is a primer to get you started.

First, understand the basics of business insurance Different types of insurance can provide different protections for your business. Some of the more common types include: • General liability: This type of insurance provides coverage for legal issues ranging from injuries on your property to claims of libel or slander.

• Product liability: Product liability insurance can provide protection against claims relating to defects in the products you manufacture or sell. The level of coverage you would need to cover your risks will depend on the types of products you supply and their potential to do harm.

• Professional liability: Professional liability coverage pertains to firms that provide services. This coverage, often referred to as “errors and omissions insurance,” protects against mistakes that could occur.

• Commercial property insurance: Just as you need insurance on your home, the same is true for your business property, even if you rent your business space. This insurance can protect the valuable assets in your company from risks such as fire, flood damage, vandalism or theft.

Specialized types of insurance Beyond the basics, there are specialized types of insurance that can provide coverage for the unique aspects of your business. Consider whether any of these apply to your situation: • Business insurance for the home: If you run your business out of your home, it is likely you’re your standard homeowner’s insurance will not cover risks associated with the business.

Check your policy to see if separate or additional coverage is needed.

• Worker’s compensation: If you have employees, you will likely need to have a worker’s compensation policy in place to cover injuries or deaths that could occur while doing business.

• Auto insurance: Vehicles specifically owned by the company require full insurance. Employees using their own cars can be covered by personal insurance policies in most cases but be sure to check with your insurer. You may need additional insurance to protect the company in case one of your employees has insufficient coverage.

• Business interruption insurance: A natural disaster or other catastrophic event could disrupt your business operation for days, weeks or even months. This form of coverage can compensate businesses for income lost during such periods. Generally, it is most suitable for a business that operates from a specific location, such as a retail store.

• Cyber or data breach coverage: If sensitive information about employees, vendors or clients is stored within your computers and other devices, there may be a financial impact if your business is subject to a cyber-attack. This insurance can help cover costs associated with notifying affected parties, public relations and legal action.

• Employment practices coverage: Employers can be subject to legal actions from employees and others, including accusations of discrimination, harassment or wrongful termination. Policies are available to protect against these costs.

• Directors’ and officers’ liability: This coverage protects individuals in positions of authority in the company if they are sued over business decisions or actions taken.

• Life insurance: If you share ownership of the business, think about what might happen to the firm if one of you passes away unexpectedly. Life insurance can be a key part of your company’s succession plan, ensuring the deceased’s loved ones and the surviving partners are taken care of financially and the business can continue to operate.

Look for solutions that are suitable As you can tell from the plentitude of options described above, there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution when it comes to business insurance. Working closely with financial and insurance professionals can help you assess your needs and determine an appropriate protection strategy.

The Fed’s Raising Rates. What Does It Mean for You?

#2 – Modestly higher savings rates Investors have not earned much in terms of interest on bank savings accounts, money market accounts for certificates of deposit in recent memory. While it seems reasonable to expect that yields may improve modestly, the change may not be dramatic. Even with historically low interest rates, investors have directed significant sums to these types of vehicles. In the current market environment, some investors still have a desire for such “safe haven,” high liquidity investments regardless of the interest rate earned.

#3 – The bond market

The Federal Reserve has begun what it says will be a series of interest rate increases in an effort to slow the economy and temper the current surge in the inflation rate.

At the start of 2022, the federal funds rate stood at near zero percent. By May, the Fed moved the federal funds rate 75 basis points (0.75%) higher.

What does this mean for your money? While Fed actions directly impact large financial institutions, they also resonate throughout the financial markets. In indirect ways, your personal finances can be affected by Fed policy.

Four ways the Fed’s rate hikes in 2022 could impact your bottom line:

#1 – Higher borrowing costs While the Fed’s rate hikes don’t directly affect most types of consumer loans, the direction the Fed sets on interest rates tends to carry over throughout debt markets.

This could include:

• Home mortgages – Adjustable-rate mortgages will be the most directly affected, as they change in conjunction with general interest rate trends in the market. If you have a fixed rate mortgage, you won’t see any change.

• Automobile loans – While a variety of factors affect how interest rates are set on vehicle loans, you can expect these rates to increase as well.

• Student loans – Federal student loan rates are set and will not be directly affected. However, borrowers working with private lenders will likely see rates move higher as they are tied to the fed funds rate.

Fed interest rates strategies don’t impact the bond market directly, but Fed policy is watched closely by bond investors. This year, along with raising short-term rates, the Fed has also begun reducing the role it plays as a buyer in the broader bond market. That action could lessen demand for longer-term bonds, which can drive up interest rates. Even before the Fed initiated its new policies, the bond market already anticipated the change and interest rates began moving higher on most types of bonds

#4 – The stock market The stock market also tends to react to the Fed’s news, and with the central bank taking steps to slow the economy, investors anticipated the potential negative effects on publicly-traded companies. As a result of this and other factors, stocks lost value at the start of the year.

It may be a good time to talk with your financial advisor about whether any of the changes mentioned above require you to update your financial plan.

Why are Water Stains Brown?

Have you ever experienced the unsightly effects of a leak coming from somewhere in or around your home? Perhaps, it is a leaky roof that recently started (or has been leaking for years).

Or, maybe you have a pipe that is leaking, or perhaps there is something funky going on with your bathtub that is causing water to leak through the ceiling areas directly below it.

Whatever the case may be, if you have experienced some type of leak along these lines, chances are that you not only had to deal with the issue of correcting the leak itself, but you also had to figure out a way to fix the damage that the leak ultimately ended up causing.

More often than not, one type of damage notoriously synonymous with leaks in our homes is that of the water stain. Water stains may show their face as tiny drips, or they may spread out over larger areas. Sometimes, they are formed due to a one-time occurrence because of a random ice dam or some other similar type of anomaly.

Other times, they are seemingly “always” wet every time it rains. Whether due to a one-time event, or seemingly constantly being added to, one tell-tale sign of water staining is their brownish colors.

If it is a REALLY in-depth stain, one may even see a reddish tone working in with the brown, and for leaks that are longterm and never seem to dry, one may even see mildew or mold specks mixed in with the water staining. With all this being said, where does the brown color of the staining stem from?

Many folks recognize that the brown staining that they may see on an occasional ceiling results from some type of leak, but few probably stop to think about why the color is brown. Obviously, when the leak begins, the water that is leaking is typically not brown in color. Contrary to some beliefs, rarely does the water that is leaking come through as an actual rust stain on a ceiling (unless the water passes through an already rusted area and pulls the rust with it through the ceiling below it).

Instead, the brown stains actually come from the more prevalent building material that the water passes through on its way to showing itself on the visible side of the ceiling.

More often than not, the water pulls the tannins out of the wood in the framing of the house behind the ceiling, and as it passes through the plaster, it does so in a fashion that maintains its brownish color and shows through on the ceiling as the brown water stain.

Once the leak is corrected, fortunately, the brown staining is not that difficult to get rid of. With the help of spot-priming wherever the brown staining is located, and using an alcohol-based shellac (using multiple coats of the primer if need be), the stains can easily be neutralized and then top-coated with the desired finish.

Where I see mistakes made are when people attempt to get rid of the stain by first priming, prior to finish-coating them with an oil or latex-based primer, or sometimes, trying to wash the stain away with a concentrated solution of bleach. While these actions may help lessen the stain, unless an alcohol-based shellac is used, the water stain’s presence may be a long-term lingerer.

Water stains can be truly annoying to look at as one passes by them each day, although eliminating them may prove frustrating, if not tackled correctly. Doing away with them can easily be accomplished if approached in the proper manner.
