Thousands of years ago, a glacier left rolling hills and ponds behind, forming what is now known as Block Island. The Narragansett Indians were the first inhabitants of Block Island as is proven by remains that date back thousands of years.

Their original name for the island was “Manisses” which translates to “Island of the Little God.” In1614, Adrian Block, a Dutch explorer sailed to the island and gave it his name. He called it Block Island, and it was in 1661 that the island was settled.

Very Expensive Balloon Ride Promises Quite The Experience

Still too expensive for 99.9% of us, but this might be the cheapest option for space tourists yet. The company Space Perspective plans to fly people up to the Earth's stratosphere in a giant balloon with a pressurized cabin, reports Space.com.

The cost? $125,000 a seat. The trip would take about six hours - a leisurely descent up at about 12 miles an hour, followed by two hours spent in the stratosphere, and then the trip home. The balloon would end up about 19 miles above the surface of the Earth, which, as Smithsonian points out, is "not technically outer space, but high enough to see the curvature of the Earth and the darkness of space stretching out beyond.

Enjoy 17 miles of beaches, take a hike on its 32 miles of trails, rent a scooter to explore the sites or shop at its more than 50 stores and specialty shops. There is plenty of dining options! Block Island offers amenities for all ages.

The company has more details about the proposed flights here. The first test flights are supposed to take off next year, but no passengers will likely go up for at least three years. These might appeal to people for whom a rocket flight seems a little too extreme. “It’s so gentle,” Jane Poynter of Space Perspective said. “It’s much less dynamic than a rocket-based flight. I know that there’s a lot of people that either cannot or don’t want to go on a rocket, but they really want to go to space.”

Attraction’s new theme will be ‘the Princess and the Frog

Disney hasn’t shown or broadcast Song of the South for decades, but a log flume ride based on the film has still been in operation at the company’s parks.

That will change, Disney said when announcing that the once-popular Splash Mountain will be transformed into something else at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom. An online petition asked that the ride be changed to a Princess and the Frog theme, based on the 2009 animated film that stars Disney’s first black princess.

The company has agreed, saying the decision actually was made last year, the Los Angeles Times reports. The reworked attraction will be inclusive, Disney said—”one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by.”

Criticism of Song of the South is not new. The 1946 film—which includes the song ”Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” is packed with racial stereotypes and a rosecolored portrayal of antebellum South.

It’s not even included on Disney+, the company’s new streaming service. The ride, known for its 52½-foot drop, has remained more popular than the movie. ”While the ride is considered a beloved classic,” the Change.org petition says, ”its history and storyline are steeped in extremely problematic and stereotypical racist tropes.”

Disney didn’t say when the remodeled attraction will debut at the California and Florida parks. ”Conceptual design work is well underway,” the company said. When it opened in 1989, Splash Mountain was called Zip-a-Dee River Run.

Husband and Wife Save Same Man’s Life, 15 Years Apart It's an organ donor story with an unusual twist: A husband and wife ended up being donors to the same man 15 years apart. The story begins in 2004, when 35-year-old Bryan Herrington died after a fall from a roof on his construction job. His kidney and pancreas went to Florida's Jeff Granger, who eventually learned his donor's identity and struck up a friendship with Herrington's widow, Terri. Flash forward to 2019, when the kidney Granger received from Herrington began to fail. He posted about it on social media, hoping to find a donor, and he informed his friend Terri not because he wanted her to give him a kidney but because he thought she should know.

”I didn’t want to call Terri but I did,” says Granger. I wanted her to be one of the first ones to know and she said, ’Don’t worry about it. You’ll get mine.’”

He thought she was joking, but it turns out she was thinking about becoming a living donor and Granger’s predicament cemented her decision. The successful transplant took place at the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital. Now, Terri’s kidney is helping keep Granger alive, as is the pancreas from her late husband. ”We are back together” she said.

National News Last Pension Tied to the Civil War Has Been Paid Out

Fenn’s Treasure Chest Is Found After 10 Year Search

Irene Triplett, last child of a Civil War veteran getting a pension died.

Not everyone is convinced.

The word ”mind-bending” features in the Wall Street Journal’s obituary on Irene Triplett and her place in history, with good reason. The 90-year-old died Sunday in a Wilkesboro, NC, nursing home, bringing an end to the final pension that had been paid out in connection with the Civil War. Triplett collected $73.13 a month from the Department of Veterans Affairs as ”a helpless adult child of a veteran,” a reference to her mental disabilities and her father, Pvt. Mose Triplett. He initially fought for the Confederacy, ending up in the 26th North Carolina Infantry Regiment in early 1863. An illness en route to Gettysburg left him in a Virginia hospital; of the 800 men from his unit who went on to Gettysburg, all but 66 were killed, wounded, or captured.

Mose Triplett left the hospital as a deserter, traveled south to Tennessee, and switched to the Union side as part of the 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry. The Journal reports the regiment was known for its ”campaign of sabotage against Confederate targets in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina.” In 1924, at the age of 83, he married Elida Hall, who was in her late 20s. Irene was born six years later, and US News & World Report adds that of Hall’s four other children with Triplett, only son Everette survived infancy. Mose Triplett died in 1938, his wife in 1967, and Everette in 1996. In 2014 the Journal ran a feature on Triplett and her family, noting at that time she was the last child of a Civil War vet collecting VA benefits, and that the same could then be said of 16 widows and children of veterans of the 1898 Spanish-American War. 6 Shop In RI

A bronze chest filled with gold, jewels, and other valuables worth more than $1 million and hidden a decade ago somewhere in the Rocky Mountain wilderness has been found.

Forrest Fenn, 89, said that a man who did not want his name released - but was from “back East” located the chest and the discovery was confirmed by a photograph the man sent him. Fenn had posted clues to the treasure’s whereabouts online and in a 24-line poem that was published in his 2010 autobiography The Thrill of the Chase.

“It was under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains and had not moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago, “I do not know the person who found it, but the poem in my book led him to the precise spot.”

Hundreds of thousands have hunted in vain across remote corners of the US West for the bronze chest believed to be filled with gold coins, jewelry, and other valuable items. Many quit their jobs to dedicate themselves to the search and others depleted their life savings. At least four people died searching for it.

Some people have expressed skepticism over Fenn’s announcement given the lack of details about who found the treasure, when and where. Among the critics is Linda Bilyeu, whose ex-husband, Randy Bilyeu, disappeared during his search in the New Mexico wilderness in January 2016 and was found dead six months later. “I believe Fenn never hid the treasure.‘He needed attention and this is how he got it. Fenn needed more attention, which is why he said the treasure has been found with no proof.” Fenn, said he hid the treasure as a way to tempt people to get into the wilderness and give them a chance to launch an old-fashioned adventure and expedition for riches.

Rare 65-pound alligator snapping turtle found in Virginia neighborhood A 65-pound alligator snapping turtle with a face only its mother could love has found a new home at a Virginia zoo after freaking out residents in a northern Virginia suburb. The turtle, dubbed Lord Fairfax, was repeatedly crossing a residential road in the Alexandria area, according to Fairfax County Police. Not native to the area, the alligator snapping turtle is generally found in the wild farther south. Animal control officers initially took Lord Fairfax to the county animal shelter, and then to the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

The fisheries folks say the turtle is just a juvenile and could eventually grow as big as 200 pounds (90 kilograms). They say the northern Virginia climate would have been too cold for him to live in the wild.

He will live instead at The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk.

With 2 Rocks, Small-Scale Miner Earns $3.4 Million A miner in Tanzania became an overnight millionaire with the discovery and sale of the two largest known tanzanite gemstones ever found. Until last week, the largest known chunk of tanzanite - one of the world’s rarest gemstones, believed to be found only in a small northern region of the East African nation—weighed 7.2 pounds. Then Saniniu Laizer, a small-scale miner with a government license to prospect for the gem, pulled up two pieces weighing 20.4 pounds and 11.25 pounds, respectively.

Laizer, who has four wives and more than 30 children, promised “a big party” after selling the two multihued gemstones to the country’s mining ministry for $3.4 million. The 52-year-old Laizer also vowed to invest in his own Simanjiro district in the Manyara region.

“I want to build a shopping mall and a school,” said Laizer of the Masai community, noting “there are many poor people around here who can’t afford to take their children to school.” He said he’d continue to look after his 2,000 cows while his children ran operations.

The trade was broadcast on national television, as was a congratulatory call from President John Magufuli, who said the discovery “proves that Tanzania is rich.”

Illegal mining remains an issue, and one local geologist estimates the supply could run out within two decades.

Guy’s Online Order Turns Up 8 Years Late When the fifth season of Mad Men aired in 2012, Canadian man Elliot Berinstein decided to try out the Don Draper look and ordered some hair cream online.

It just arrived. Berinstein says he was surprised when a package from online retailer Well.ca turned up on his doorstep May 6. “I was very confused because I hadn’t ordered anything from Well.ca in awhile. And then I remembered eight years ago I ordered something from them.” He says he decided against using the Brylcreem after he opened the tube. “It was bright yellow,” he said.

“When I Googled it, it was supposed to be pretty white, so I didn’t try it out.” Berinstein, a doctor, says the package never turned up at his Ottawa address after the 2012 order. After moving to Toronto, he contacted the company and asked them to send it to his new address and when it didn’t turn up there, he decided to quit chasing the $5 order. Canada Post says it will look into the late delivery. “This is certainly a unique situation and we can only speculate at this point as to what may have happened.”

World News 9 Years of Unwanted Pizza Deliveries Driving Man Crazy

It’s a good problem to have - until it isn’t. Jean Van Landeghem, a 65-year-old man living in Turnhout, Belgium, has for the last nine years been getting pizzas he did not order. The orders come at all hours (that includes 2am), and a memorable lowpoint came in January 2019, where 10 delivery men arrived over the course of the day; one carried 14 pizzas. “Pizza terror is victim’s own slice of hell,” proclaims the Times of London in a headline, and that may not be an exaggeration. Van Landeghem said, “I cannot sleep anymore. I start shaking every time I hear a scooter on the street.”

He says he always refuses the food without pay, to the detriment of the restaurant. And he’s not alone in his hell. He says a female friend living about 20 miles away has been on the receiving end of unwanted pizza deliveries for nine years as well. “Sometimes we both get them on the same day. When that happens, we warn each other to expect a delivery,” he says. He has alerted police on more than one occasion. While the culprit remains unknown, it’s thought to be someone Van Landeghem and his friend both know.

China Says GPS Alternative Is Now Complete 55th satellite in Beidou system has been launched

China launched the final satellite in its Beidou constellation that emulates and may seek to compete with the US Global Positioning System, marking a further step in the country’s advance as a major space power. The launch of the satellite onboard a Long March-3 rocket was broadcast live from the satellite launch base of Xichang, deep in the mountains of southwestern China. About half an hour later, the satellite was deployed in orbit and extended its solar panels to provide its energy. The third iteration of the Beidou Navigation Satellite System promises to provide global coverage for timing and navigation, offering an alternative to Russia’s GLONASS and the European Galileo systems, as well as America’s GPS. The launch of the 55th satellite in the Beidou family shows China’s push to provide global coverage has been “entirely successful,” the system’s chief designer Yang Changfeng told state broadcaster CCTV. ”In actual fact, this also signifies that we are moving from being a major nation in the field of space to becoming a true space power,” Yang said. The first version of Beidou, meaning ”Big Dipper,” was decommissioned in 2012. The nowcomplete current system, known as BDS-3, began providing navigation services in 2018 to countries taking part in China’s sprawling ”Belt and Road” infrastructure initiative. It largely relies on medium earth orbit satellites, but also operates six geosynchronous orbit satellites such as the one just launched.

Juxtaposing Indian cuisine with fusion inspiration, the Chaska menu is sure to have something for everyone, and its welcoming service is at the apex of their mission. We had a moment to sit down with the founders of Chaska, Sanjiv and Vandana Dhar, and restaurant manager, Jeffery Branch, to discuss this new restaurant many are raving about.

Born out of this parallel to a sense of infatuation, our chefs at Chaska have created a globally inspired menu that is still rooted in the flavors of India. Our hope is that our inventive flavors will spark you to have a chaska of your own and awaken your palate to the taste of a whole new world.

1. Where is Chaska located and when did it open?

Chaska is an Indian restaurant that has incorporated modernization into Indian cuisine. We draw inspiration from a range of global cuisines. This is evident in our dishes such as our Zaatar Naan or Truffle Seekh Kabab. However, we also create flatbreads that have all the ingredients of our wellknown Indian dishes, as well as tacos. Who doesn’t love tacos?!?

Chaska is located in Garden City in Cranston, Rhode Island. We opened in December 2019, so we are the “new kid on the block!”

2. What is the meaning of Chaska and why did you give your restaurant this name?

We love this question! Chaska is the Hindi term for the word obsession. It is often associated with one’s addiction to things such as a love for a particular food and/or drink. When someone has a “chaska,” they are often singularly focused on something and will do anything to attain it.

3. What differentiates Chaska from other Indian restaurants?

4. If someone is new to Indian cuisine, what can they expect when they try Indian food for the first time at Chaska?

If we had to sum up Chaska’s food in three words, they would be bold, bright and original. Our dishes

are one-of-a-kind because they’re new takes on familiar, classic Indian dishes. We don’t just focus on the traditional Indian cuisine; we have many items on our menu for any palate. Patrons will be excited and in awe of the creations of our chef!

5. There has been information that reports the spices used in Indian cuisine can have health benefits. Can you elaborate on which spices and what they can potentially help with?

Definitely. Turmeric is a spice that’s often used in Indian cooking.

The health benefits of turmeric include: the stabilization of blood sugar levels and the reduction of inflammation in your body. Cumin is another spice that we often use, which helps promote digestion and is a rich source of iron. Finally, cloves are high in antioxidants and contain helpful nutrients such as manganese. We also have an array of ayurvedic cocktails that have an abundance of health benefits!

6. Why did you choose Garden City for your Cranston location?

We’re also the owners of Kabob & Curry, Rasa, and Rasoi - all located in Rhode Island (Providence, Pawtucket and East Greenwich), so from a geographical standpoint, Garden City was where we always wanted to open our next location. The center itself is known as a shopping destination and we love the overall atmosphere. Also, we felt as if Cranston didn’t have a restaurant similar to Chaska and wanted to introduce the community to a new array of flavors.

7. Chaska seems to be a very chic, trendy looking restaurant. Tell us about the décor and aesthetic?

Thank you for this question! We actually spent a tremendous amount of time on the overall aesthetic of Chaska. We drew inspiration from our own travels to Asia and a lot of the decor has been directly imported from there. For example, our temple bells are from Thailand and the boat towards the bar is from Goa. We also felt as though integrating color was important as Indian cuisine itself is quite vivid.

Additionally, the layout of the kitchen was open format from the get-go as we want customers to experience how the food is being prepared, right before their very own eyes.

8. How do you want your patrons to feel while they are dining in your restaurant? How do you want them to feel when they leave?

Service and good food are both paramount to us, so we hope that our patrons feel welcomed, comfortable, and completely satisfied with their overall experience. Although Indian food has been around for a bit, we feel as if many individuals still aren’t aware of the depth of the cuisine and hope that Chaska can help educate them to a certain degree. When they leave, we hope they feel inspired enough to come back after consuming delicious dishes, and happy to have found a new dining destination in Rhode Island!

Ingredients: 5 lbs. pork ribs (I prefer St. Louis-style Berkshire pork) Lawry's Seasoned Salt 1 cup water 1/2 cup maple balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon granulated onion 1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper sauce (I like Frank’s Red Hot)

I had 5 lbs. of beautiful St. Louis-style heritage Berkshire pork ribs thawing in the fridge and wanted to create a new sauce or glaze for them. My food-loving friends, Don and Johanna, showed up at the door with a gift they bought in Maine- a bottle of maple balsamic vinegar. It smelled wonderful...and tasted even better! I knew I had what I was looking for.You can easily make your own maple balsamic vinegar by combining a 1/2 cup of balsamic vinegar (not the super-expensive kind, but the $9-abottle kind) with 2 teaspoons of maple syrup. Add more or less maple to your taste.

Directions: Prepare the ribs by removing the inedible skin on the back of the rack. The easiest way to do this is to cut a little "tab" of skin, then pull it with your fingers. Holding the skin with a dry paper towel will help your grip. I cut the racks in half to fit my smoker.

Season the ribs lightly on both sides with Lawry's Seasoned Salt and place them into a 240-degree smoker for 4 hours, smoking lightly with hickory wood.

In a saucepan over high heat, combine the water, maple balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, onion, garlic, and cayenne pepper sauce. Stir well, and let it come to a boil. Let it reduce by half, leaving it watery. Set aside.

After 4 hours, remove the ribs from the smoker, placing them on a sheet of aluminum foil. (I use Reynold's Non-Stick Foil, since the glaze will be sticky.) Brush both sides of the ribs with half of the glaze and place the ribs meat-side-down on the foil before sealing it around the ribs. Place the aluminum foil packets on a baking sheet, then into a pre-heated 250-degree oven.

While the ribs are cooking in the oven, turn the heat up on the remaining half of the balsamic glaze in the sauce pan and reduce it until it starts to thicken. Once you reach this stage, turn the heat off and set it aside.

Remove the ribs from the oven after 2 hours. Open the foil packets so that the ribs are exposed. Brush the bottom of the ribs (which should be facing up), then flip the ribs over and brush the meaty side. The ribs should be falling off the bone at this point, which means they're ready to serve.

By Stacie Venagro - 2017 World Miss Fitness America Pro I hope that everyone is trying their best to adjust to the “new normal” right now. Some of the restrictions in place have begun to lift, but I think it’s safe to say, we won’t be packing into the gym anytime soon. We can’t let that stop us from getting a good workout in! There are so many options outside of the gym and I’ll be going over a few of those in this article.

My hope is that you use this information to not only workout, but to thrive in spite of it all. There are many things that we as individuals cannot control, so we must do our best to let those things go. However, what you can control is how you spend your time and that includes strengthening the mind and body. I’ve gone over some of the many benefits of a regular exercise routine many times and this time is no different.

I would say, if anything, this is the most important time to have a workout plan. As we know, exercise helps manage stress, anxiety, depression, etc., so if the current situation has got you feeling a bit down, dust off the yoga mat and get moving!

I do not want to hear, “I don’t have any equipment at home” ever again. That excuse is exactly that, an excuse! “But Stacie, it’s been raining out, so I can’t go outside to exercise.” Again, another excuse. Ask yourself these questions: Are you physically able to exercise? Do you have a floor? Do you have, at the very least, 10 minutes to dedicate to a workout? If you answered yes to all of these questions, then you are ready to roll! If you’re working with the bare minimum, HIIT (high intensity interval training) is a great way to really get a good sweat in, while not using up too much of your time. You can do this workout with all body weight exercises, no equipment necessary. If you have a set of dumbbells, a kettlebell, stability ball, resistance bands, or anything else, then you can work those into your routine as well. I will be including a couple of different workouts at the end of this article that include body weight exercises and with weights.

Before I give the workouts, I want to add a few other resources that I like to use. If you’re looking for free workouts, “Fitness Blender”on YouTube has an extensive list of workouts. There is a workout listed for any fitness level, time constraints, weights or no weights, low impact, literally anything. Please be sure to check your form to avoid injury.

If you are unsure, then modify the exercise. There is nothing “weak” about exercising safely and efficiently. I’m sure there are many other great YouTube fitness channels as well that you can find, just be sure to choose one that matches your fitness level. If you’re looking for something more routine, there are many apps that you can use, however, keep in mind, most of them usually have some sort of monthly fee. Do whatever works best for you.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to maintain a healthy workout regimen right now. We might not be able to get together for group workouts but that doesn’t mean we can’t support each other!

Get some friends together for a video call and do a workout together.

Have an accountability partner to keep you motivated. It’s so easy to skip the workout, especially when you’re at home and there’s no one there to push you. Find what motivates you and remind yourself when you’re feeling like you want to quit. Overall, take care of your body & mind. I promise, it is so rewarding.

Staying Fit During the Coronavirus

There is much we cannot control, but in the last three months, we have hopefully learned that we can control taking care of our own emotional and physical states. Exercising is just as crucial for mental health as it is for physical health. I believe that this is even more true now, at a time when some of us still feel we need to be in lockdown, while some of us are starting to venture out. We can go to restaurants, with restrictions. I know that some of you are still not feeling comfortable f bl going i out.

We are being reminded of the potential risks of engaging in large events. We can go shopping, but again, with restrictions. So many of us are not doing anymore than we need to do to get through the days, the weeks and the months.

Now, more than any other time, you can take care of you. Gyms are open, but with restrictions.

With that said, I am going to share with you some home exercise programs you can do to keep your mental and physical self in shape. You do not need equipment. Great if you have it, but if you don’t, all you need is a mat or towel, some water and a great attitude.

Lunge back left leg, arms above chest hands interlocked, (you can hold light weight) twist left, bring arms forward, come up.

Repeat each exercise 20 times.

Lunge back right leg, arms above chest hands interlocked, (you can hold light weight) twist right, bring arms forward, come up.

- Right lunges right right knee up when you come back in.

Left lunges left knee up when you come back in.

Feet, shoulder width apart, squat arms over head, elbow or bicep to ear (use light weights if you have them).

There are so many things you can do to keep moving: Jumping jacks, pushups, burpees, squats, jog in place, etc. What’s good is that it’s summertime. The weather is nice. Take a walk outside. Move about as much as you can.

I am aware that with all that’s happening, exercise may be the last thing on your mind, but I cannot express enough how continued movement is vital for your sanity and physical health.

My personal belief and feelings are: The COVID-19 debacle affected the world for the purpose of a much needed reset. It’s the cycle of the universe. Our planet was/is being forced to change or shut down. We are all being put into a “timeout” to take a break from the chaos and selfishness we’ve been living. What’s important has been put aside or forgotten. Only when we realize this, can we truly be part of the solution. We are being guided or should I say forced to join together with compassion and kindness,while following the guidance of experts, as we all lend a helping hand to heal the planet and each other.

When Should You Replace Your Front Door?

My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www.

Whether it is your front door, or any other exterior-facing entry door of your home, there is typically a “useful” life component attached to any type of question as to how long one of these should last, before needing to be replaced.

There are a variety of factors that play into when it makes the most sense to look at replacing an entry door.

One area of focus could be whether it seems like you are losing energy through the door. Whether it is heat in the winter time or cool air in the summertime, most folks would prefer the energy to stay within their household and not release it into the neighborhood if at all possible.

Do you notice any major warpedness or deconfiguration with the door?

Although it is not necessarily unusual for doors to change their original form over a period of time, there certainly is such a thing as “too much” of a shape change.

Rotted beyond repair door rot is also one of the easiest ways to recognize that your door needs to be replaced. I am not referring to the trim around the door, as usually the trim can fairly easily be changed out if ever necessary.

I am instead referring to either the door itself, or, what most commonly happens, the exterior-facing portion of the door jamb (which is the side of the door frame that the door runs into perpendicularly).

The rotted door jamb conversation often gets me into, what I consider, a losing-battle discussion with highly capable Master Carpenters, who plead with me that the rot in the jamb can be surgically removed and a new piece of wood installed in place of the rot. Technically, they are correct. My mentality, however, is that when the jamb starts to go, the door is “toast.”

With the door products that are available on the market today, fortunately or unfortunately (depending on how you look at it), it is more cost-efficient to pay for a new door and change it out than it would be to buy some time by repairing the old jamb which, in my mind, is only tem-

porarily delaying the inevitable.

The exception to this would be a really “solid” older door where you simply would not be able to replace it with what is on the market today. The age old saying, “They don’t make them like they used to,” is highly applicable in having a dialogue about door replacement.

As an example, a solid wood door made 50 years ago will be light years ahead in terms of durability, in comparison to anything that most consider reasonably priced on today’s market.

The reasons for this are a combination of the raw doormaking materials not being as readily available in the modern world, along with the fact that it is nearly impossible for manufacturers to produce these doors in a manner that would allow them to sufficiently sell them to consumers at a volume which would make it worth it for them to do so.

Although it is difficult to pinpoint the exact moment of when it is best to change an exterior entry door out, there are absolutely various signs that one can rely on which help determine when it might be time to do so, subsequent to any LARGER issues developing that extend outside of the door in question.

Keeping Your Business Going in These Difficult Times The economic shutdown that we’ve endured as a nation as we attempt to combat COVID-19 has created significant challenges for small business owners.

Even those that were thriving before the crisis are not immune to the effects of a sustained closure or limitation on how they operate.

If you’re among the millions of American small business owners worried about being able to pay your bills – or even stay in business – during this challenging period, you’re likely wondering how assistance from the U.S. government can help. Here is information on three programs that may be available to you, depending on your circumstances:

#1 – The Paycheck Protection Program This was a major element of the fiscal stimulus act passed

by Congress, designed to help small businesses. You can apply through a bank for a government loan to help keep your business operating. If the funds are used to cover payroll costs and other necessary expenses like rent and utilities, the loan may be forgiven in part or entirely. This program works best if you are still able to keep your business operating and some of your staff employed. If you’ve been forced to shut down completely and laid off your workforce without a clear idea of when you can be up and running again, it may prove less beneficial. Congress has added more funding for the program, but the demand for loans among businesses is strong, and to date only a finite amount of dollars are available.

#2 – Employee Retention Credit If you have continued to pay wages to employees even through your business income declined significantly compared to last year, you may be eligible for the Employee Retention Credit. You qualify if your business was fully or partially suspended by the government due to COVID-19 during a calendar quarter, or if your gross receipts are below 50 percent of what you earned in a comparable quarter last year. The credit equals 50 percent of qualifying wages paid up to $10,000 per employee, beginning for wages paid after March 12, 2020 and before January 1, 2021. Be sure to consult with your tax advisor to find out if you qualify.

#3 – Social Security Tax Deferral If cash flow is an issue, you can defer deposits of the employer’s share of Social Security payroll taxes or, if you are selfemployed, a portion of self-employment taxes. GENTRY MOVING, STORAGE & OFFICE INSTALLATION

Once mid-March hit with Covid-19 and its subsequent swift reaction to the virus, business leaders had to adjust to the new reality. Some companies made changes, while other companies had a hard time adjusting their businesses to the new directives related to coronavirus. As the state started restricting businesses as to how they could operate, some had to close down, while other businesses found themselves considered “essential” during this time of uncertainty.

Soave Crum, whose smiling face can be seen on their fleet of moving trucks and vehicles, said the influx of sudden business proved to be challenging.

Essential companies such as Gentry Moving and Storage, located at 1425 Cranston Street in Cranston, didn’t have time to think about a new business strategy. As the area schools and other companies began to shut down, Gentry President Christine Soave Crum found her company being called in to assist in the moves of local college students who were suddenly forced to leave campus and return home. That came in addition to their normal workload of moving commercial, residential and other clients anywhere from across the street to up and down the eastern seaboard, from Maine to Florida.

Gentry Moving continued to work amid the pandemic. Everyday, there were new directives from the President and our Governor, and Soave Crum and her employees followed along for the safety of their clients and each other. Movers are using gloves & facemasks. The trucks are cleaned and sanitized. The interaction with the client is as respectful and careful as possible, being mindful of social distancing, to avoid potential unnecessary contact or contamination.

“We had to act quickly to get as many students out of their dorms or apartments with very little prep or lead time for us to prepare,” said Soave Crum. “We came together, got the trucks and men ready, and aided colleges and universities such as Brown in the logistics of moving out their students over the course of three days at the end of March. We got it done.”

She said they are careful as a matter of principal. With this pandemic wrinkle, it

simply heightened everyone’s awareness of the situation.

“The health and well being of my employees and our clients is what matters most to me. We have been in business for 15 years. We treat each piece of furniture as if it were our own, and it shows in our long standing reputation of great service, from start to finish,” Soave Crum said.

He continued “There are enough stories out there of moving fails and things that get broken or damaged during a move.

Accidents do occasionally occur, but we do everything possible to avoid that from happening. We are hoping to change the client’s move experience into a positive one, every time.”

Speaking of moving fails, Soave Crum stresses to clients to please do their homework on a moving company BEFORE Hiring them. She gets upset when she hears horror stories from people—clients who were dissatisfied with other moving companies—either because they didn’t show up when scheduled, the move price changed drastically by end of the move, or even damaged goods that never get reimbursed to the client. There are many

issues that can turn any move into a disaster if you are not careful, she added.

Soave Crum said much of that can be avoided by learning what you can about the mover you are considering (checking their website, reviews, checking to see if they are licensed and insured, etc.). A consumer should always be well educated so they can chose the best company for their needs.

Soave Crum said her Move Managers ask many questions during the booking process, too. “Gentry wants to have as much information from the customer as possible so we know how to staff the move properly.” she said. “Moving day will be stressful enough without adding any ‘last minute surprises’ into the mix. Careful planning Helps us give our clients the best move possible.”

When Soave Crum is not being seen on trucks across Rhode Island and beyond, she is active with helping several nonprofit organizations and fundraising with them, such as the RI ABLTC, Elves for Elders, and North West Cheer. Gentry Moving and Storage has always prided itself on giving back to the community that has been so welcoming to them.

Last fall, Gentry was the home to the Second Annual Charity Cornhole Tournament, which was organized to raise money for TLC4LTC, a group that helps grant wishes to Local seniors. The location turned out to be a last-minute change because inclement weather forced the move away from its original venue. Gentry Moving and Storage was quick to offer their building and lot. Within an hour, they transformed their warehousing area into a place of fun and celebration. That event not only raised awareness for the nonprofit, but it also highlighted Soave Crum and her company’s willingness to help the community, no matter what it took.

Additionally, Soave Crum can be seen at various networking events, including NRI Finest in Networking and North West Links, which she Co-Chairs, and leads monthly for Senior Care Providers in Rhode Island.

They are a two-time First Place Providence Journal Readers Choice Award winner (2018 and 2019). They also earned the distinction as “Southern New England’s Best Moving Company. They have made it into the Top 3 for 2020, but COVID-19 has put the results on hold temporarily.
