Cruise That Will Really Never Stop Set for May If you’re one of the disgruntled customers who just saw their three-year cruise of a lifetime with Life of the Seas nixed last month, there’s something else coming up that may float your boat. The Washington Post reports that Villa Vie Residences has announced the recent purchase of a 924-passenger, 485-cabin ship that it hopes to launch on its debut sail in May, with a planned 3.5-year circumnavigation that passengers can do in its entirety or in legs. The company said that it scooped up the 30-year-old MS Braemar from Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and will rename it the Villa Vie Odyssey. The site for the ship boasts of its eight decks, three restaurants, eight bars, and four lounges, as well as a library, spa and fitness center, and “extended pool with four Jacuzzis.” Villa Vie CEO Mikael Petterson tells Business Insider that once his company officially gets its hands on the ship in February, it will pump $13 million more into a renovation that should take about 10 weeks. As for the cruise itself, “it’s a continuous cruise that will really never stop,” Petterson tells CNN. “Our goal is to make this more of a lifestyle and residence, more than your typical cruise.” If you want to stick around for the entire 1,301day maiden circumnavigation, which will stop at ports in about 150 countries, you can expect to fork over at least $115,000, before taxes and fees. Those who want to sail for just part of the cruise can book one of the 16 smaller segments, which span from 35 to 131 days. The least-expensive option for those less ambitious adventurers is an interior cabin for $89 a night, which includes meals, laundry, internet, and housekeeping. This year, in partnership with Salve Regina University, the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA) embarked on a comprehensive study to gauge the recovery of Rhode Island’s hospitality and tourism sectors, post-COVID. Overseen by distinguished faculty and industry experts, this student-led analysis scrutinized the intricate economic dynamics influencing Rhode Island’s resurgence by county, given all of the complicated factors affecting it. The findings were revealing, offering overall insights into the remarkable economic strides made since the pandemic struck. However, they also shed light on the lingering challenges that demand our time and attention as an industry. Rhode Island’s hospitality and tourism spending in 2022, adjusted to 2019 equivalent values, has demonstrated remarkable resilience, reaching 93% of pre-COVID levels. While a strong data point, it is crucial to note that this is a $550 million shortfall compared to 2019 figures, signifying the hurdles we continue to face.

The economic resurgence of Rhode Island’s hospitality and tourism sectors is a testament to our industry’s innovation and resilience, and shows clearly that best practices were adapted across counties and peer-to-peer. RIHA remains committed to fostering a culture of community that not only sustains us, but propels us forward. While competition is healthy and essential, camaraderie is equally as important – especially during challenging times. SHRIMP SCAMPI ON STEROIDS

I love shrimp scampi, and had the need to satisfy my cravings the other day. But what started as a simple scampi recipe, turned into something a bit more. I may never make scampi the same way again!

Ingredients: 1 lb. wild-caught American shrimp, peeled and de-veined 4 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons parsley 1 teaspoon garlic salt 1 teaspoon oregano 1/2 teaspoon granulated onion 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 3 tablespoons Spirgučiai (see below) 1/2 lb. fresh mozzarella, sliced oregano, for sprinkling Thaw the shrimp under cold water. Place in a colander to drain. Spirgučiai is a Lithuanian favorite: chopped bacon and onions, fried until crisp and usually sprinkled over anything and everything in Lithuanian cooking. I always have some in my fridge, already prepared and just waiting to be used. In a saucepan on medium heat, combine the butter, olive oil, parsley, garlic salt, oregano, onion, pepper and Spirgučiai. Heat only until everything melts and combines. Don’t let it burn. (If you don’t have Spirgučiai, all you need to do is take a couple of slices of bacon, chop them up, and fry them in a pan until crisp. Keep the bacon and the fat in the pan and then add the butter, olive oil, parsley, garlic salt, oregano, onion and pepper.) In a small sheet pan lined with foil, lay the shrimp in a single layer and cook them halfway in a pre-heated 400-degree oven to remove the moisture from the shrimp. Take the pan out of the oven, and drain off the moisture, if any. Pour the butter mix from the saucepan all over the shrimp and toss to coat. Return the shrimp to the oven for a few minutes, until they’ve heated through and are almost completely cooked. (Careful: never over-cook shrimp!) Take the pan out of the oven, and place pieces of mozzarella on top, garnishing with a little oregano. Set the oven on broil and cook until the cheese has melted. Slice with a spatula and serve on top of pasta, making sure you get some of that buttery scampi sauce. 18 Shop In RI

How Exercise Has Changed Over The Past Century By: Susan Gazerro

I have always been curious about the evolution of exercise over the last 100 years. What I’ve learned is that there has always been a pursuit of fitness since the beginning of man’s existence. Man’s quest for fitness has been driven from prehistoric times for survival, through hunting and gathering. Today, we don’t need to hunt, but fitness has taken on a whole new agenda. Today, so many of us are focused on how we look. Years ago, they didn’t even realize how much exercise they were really getting. They weren’t doing it to look better, or to be healthier; they were doing it because it was their normal way of life. They were just doing what they needed to do to survive. Like everything else, there are pros and cons with how fitness has evolved. We know it has advanced. We know we make more sophisticated equipment. We 32 Shop In RI

have gyms with every piece of equipment you can think of. We have machines for every body part. We have free weights, barbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, etc. There’s even a fitness class for everyone. You can choose from yoga, kickboxing, cycle, pilates, etc. However, I also feel we have become much more lax, as everything is available at our fingertips. We don’t have to work hard to get anything. With that said, I wanted to see what the experts thought about exercising in the early 1900s, as compared to now. Going back 100 years or so, exercise took a variety of different forms, but to summarize, quick dynamic exercises were favored over slow or more static ones. Running, jumping, wrestling, gymnastics, and throwing heavy stones are frequently mentioned in all the historical sources I read. Today, more than half of Americans are what we call “couch potatoes.” These people routinely get less

than 30 minutes a day of exercise. This is because, as I mentioned earlier, we don’t have to move around to do anything. Everything is available with a click. This is just a fact of modern day life. Research shows that 100 years ago people got five times more exercise, daily, because they had to move around. They weren’t sitting ordering things online. They even had to get up to answer the phone. All this extra movement adds up, and we just don’t do it today. Years ago, people had to move to do everything. Today, we go to work, and in most occupations, we sit for eight hours. Then, we sit in our car and we go home. When we arrive at home, we sit in front of the television. Most people aren’t eating healthy meals, in addition to not moving. Going back years, they had to hunt which involved moving. We have pre-prepared, pre-packaged food that doesn’t require energy to collect. Again. research shows the energy expenditures were three to five times the amount that people spend today. That was just a regular person going to and from work. It wasn’t a lumberjack or someone who was working on the land or someone who had a huge, heavily physical job. Now, I will say that there are occupations today which require physical work, but still, when you add in the car ride to and from work, the unhealthy eating and just sitting on the computer, or watching television, it is a lot less activity than they were doing years ago. They were burning a lot more calories. Today, there are organizations that are determined to build communities where you have to get out of your car to walk to your apartment or condo. They are incorporating bike lanes and walking lanes to encourage people to move.

We, as a country, have become so lazy, but it is not our fault. Technology has advanced so much, it has actually made things too easy for us. Not just adults, even children are much more lazy, today. Not even 100 years ago, I’m going to say 40 to 50 years ago, children were playing outside on a regular basis. No one had computers or cell phones. You walked to school. You ate dinner and went back outside to play with your friends. You walked to the local candy store. You were dropped at the mall, where you walked around or you went roller skating and ice skating. You went bowling. All of these activities kept kids moving. Once the computer generation happened, all this activity stopped, and people wonder why their children are overweight or obese, or just seem to be lazy. I am not saying everyone fits this picture, but I am saying a good majority do. It’s the evolution of technology. It has just become too easy to do anything. The physical is one piece. The mental state is another. We don’t even have to think. If you need an answer to just about any question or task, you can find it on the internet or YouTube. Fit to Graduate By Kevin Kearns Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting a young man and his father, who wanted me to help them with the young man’s senior project His name is Mason Pereira, and he wanted me to mentor him in functional strength training. I thought it was intriguing that this young man chose this for his high school project. His goal was to put on 15 to 20 lbs. of muscle over the next six months. Coming from my background, after being bullied for so long when I was a kid, I thought nothing of helping this young man. The sessions were complementary, which was my way of paying it forward for all of the people that have helped me. The challenge with young men of his age group is most of them only think of bench press and “curls for girls,” and many times, they are not taught the proper mechanics behind simple weight lifting exercises. Although I’m not a big fan of traditional strength training modalities, there is a way to use some of the old school strength training modalities in the new functional training paradigm. He is on a similar program, just like one of my fighter’s or athlete’s. It is a three phase system that encompasses strength and hypertrophy, explosive power, and what we call “gas in the tank” or “sport specific training.” The latter is akin to hit protocols, which are basically high intensity interval training, (of course with my twist). excellent idea. The family that plays together stays together, in my opinion. We are documenting Mason’s journey through the whole process, so that others may benefit from what he’s learning over a six month’s period of time. Many people think, heavy weights, low reps, et cetera, et cetera; we are crushing that paradigm. When an exercise becomes too easy or less challenging, we use one of the eight elements of fitness to raise the bar on the exercise, such as taking a simple chest press with dumbbells. Instead of doing the exercise on a flat bench, we do the exercise on a stability ball. You may ask, why do that coach? If you involve more muscle, you activate more muscle, and you get stronger faster. As the old saying goes, why not get more “bang for your buck?” So, those are just some of Mason’s workouts. Helping Adult Kids Without Harming Your Own Financial Future By: Edward Pontarelli Jr. According to a recent study published by Ameriprise Financial, individuals in their 30s and 40s have received significant financial help from family and expect additional assistance in the future. And over a quarter of those sur1 veyed said they received $25,000 or more. It’s admirable to see that parents want to go to such great lengths to help their children achieve financial success. Yet parents need to be mindful that they don’t inadvertently diminish their own success in doing so. As a financial advisor, here’s the advice I offer parents who want to give their adult children a financial head start without harming their own financial future: Prioritize saving for your own retirement. It takes many years to accumulate the savings you need to retire comfortably. Your children are likely just starting their careers, while your time remaining in the workforce may be limited to 5, 10 or 15 years. Putting yourself first isn’t a selfish move. It’s about being wise with your money. If you make it a priority to have enough saved when you retire, your kids won’t have to worry about providing you with financial support later in life. Be strategic with your financial gifts. Like other monetary goals, it’s important to add gifts of cash to your overall financial plan. When you treat cash gifts separately, you shortchange other priorities such as retirement. What will it cost you to divert savings from your retirement plan? With a complete list of financial priorities, you can see how much you need to save to reach them all. Consider alternate approaches to helping your kids. There may be ways to help your kids other than by dipping into savings. Encourage them to take financial responsibility when they can do so. Your college-bound son or daughter may be able to take out student loans at a low interest rate, which will reduce or eliminate the amount you need to contribute for tuition. Instead of writing a check to help your child buy a car or house, you might co-sign on a loan to help them lock in a lower-interest rate or more favorable repayment terms. Have conversations about money. Your willingness to talk about your finances is a valuable example for your adult

children. So too is your attention to your retirement savings. I encourage parents to invite their adult children to attend a financial planning session with a financial advisor. Meet The Dream Team: Owen Head Each month, Shop in RI Magazine profiles one member of a growing business networking group called “The Dream Team,” that meets weekly, in Smithfield. This month, we feature Alfram “Owen” Head, of Alfram Videography in Riverside. Owen emigrated to America from New Zealand after pursuing a career in teaching. His specialty is creating movie trailer-quality movies for businesses. “I was at teachers’ college in Auckland (in New Zealand). As part of the curriculum, I had to take a course on video cameras, which focused on incorporating video into the classroom as a tool to help students learn. This is when I knew that my real dream was to make videos for a living,” shared Owen. After years of thinking about this dream, his pursuit started by enrolling at RI School of Design in Providence (RISD) to take applicable courses like videography, motion graphics, sound design, marketing campaigns, graphic design, and many more. Owen said that it’s not a question of pointing and shooting a subject. Lighting is a huge part of creating a beautiful image. Getting great sound is also a key component because while a viewer can forgive bad video, they will never forgive poor audio. Once that is done, editing it down to a few minutes of “capturing the moment” is where the real work begins.

He gets projects through his networking groups and from returning clients, who see great value in his work. “Some of the companies I worked for want to update their videos,” he said. “They may have changes in location, staff, or want to announce some major news. It’s always a pleasure seeing people return with new ideas on standing out from their competitors.” Owen joined The Dream Team several months ago, as a resource for educating other professionals regarding his services. He enjoys the close-knit group and forging those relationships into working partnerships. How to Pass Along a Tradition of Giving to Your Children By: Carrie McPherson

As an advisor, I often receive questions from my 1 clients who want to help pass along a tradition of giving. If you’re looking to impart financial values to your children, here are some ideas on how you can open their eyes to the gift of giving. Talk about why you give. Help your child understand the importance of giving to others in need. Talk early and often about why sharing your knowledge, abilities, possessions or wealth matters to you. Instilling a culture of giving in your family is a process, not a one-time event. Remember to embrace the joy of giving, doing your best not to make giving back feel like a homework assignment or chore. Find causes your child cares about. Your child is more likely to develop a habit of giving back when he or she is passionate about the cause. Start by brainstorming the possibilities of who your child can help, such as their classmates, animals, the environment or individuals experiencing hunger – and encourage them to think about ways they can be of assistance Do they love to bake or meet new people? Do they enjoy music or caring for animals? Next, help your child choose one or two charities whose missions reflect their interests. Involve older children in the search and vetting process, teaching them how to have confidence that a charity is doing its best to help the cause. Give and volunteer together. When your children see you volunteering your time, talent and treasure, they see your values at work. Find ways to involve your children in your own giving. With the holiday season in full swing, consider volunteering or purchasing gifts for another family together. Your children will learn first-hand how rewarding giving to others can feel, and you’ll have the bonus of creating family memories to cherish, too. Encourage disciplined saving. in order to become responsible givers as they grow older. When your children get an allowance, or otherwise receive money, they can practice making responsible choices. Introduce the idea of “save, share and spend” — setting aside a portion of their money for the future, a portion to help others and a portion for fun spending. Create a family foundation. Formalizing your giving in this way can create ongoing opportunities for you and your children to make a lasting impact on the community. Peter Brown of eXp Realty: Building Wealth Through Real Estate By Mark Berger

Peter’s journey into real estate was hardly linear. He spent more than two decades in the auto industry—helping people find, finance, and maintain their vehicles’ (most recently working in the service department for roughly a decade). While he exceeded all expectations— Peter typically placed in the top five throughout New England for customer service at his Massachusettsbased dealership— something inside him, however, told him there was a better path; enabling him to help people in more tangible ways. More than two years ago, Peter changed careers. He left the car dealership and entered into real estate. He studied for the exam, passed it on the first try, and became a realtor for The White Lion Group, a division of eXp Realty in Cranston, three months ago. Peter helped purchasers and sellers get the most out of their transactions. Peter said that the transition from automobiles to real estate wasn’t too difficult for him. “I pride myself on having excellent customer service,” he said. “Because I worked in that capacity, making customers happy was my top priority. Changing gears into real estate gave me a better way of generating income for people, as opposed to just selling them something that depreciates over time.”

He said that buying a home is one thing people can see as a commodity, increasing over time. Peter noted that when anyone buys a car, the value drops as soon as the car leaves the lot. That usually isn’t true with homes. One recent success story involved a local woman. With Peter’s help, she sold her five-bedroom house. With the money she received from the sale, she purchased a mobile home and retired early. Peter said that was “rewarding” to help her realize that she didn’t need to work anymore. One way Peter illustrates a homeowner’s situation is, “house rich, cash poor.” By tapping into the equity in their homes, once they have him sell the property, they can have the money they need to do the things they want and need to do. Especially if the property is starting to have a lot of deferred maintenance, or problems they simply do not have the money to repair. He works with many industry professionals to make the home-buying process easy. There are some customers who may need extra help because of poor credit, no credit, or lack of available funds. That is when Peter uses his team to ensure the process runs successfully. That extends into the pre-approval process, which is crucial to determining viability. Being able to know what customers can afford and what their financial situation is narrowing the search for homes in a given area. Heath Lefort, branch sales manager for Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation in Providence, said that being able to get the process moving the right way requires knowledge of the industry. It also means being able to be competitive with any offers buyers have. Lefort says working with Peter makes the process simple for all involved. Another way their partnership thrives is Peter’s knowledge of the condo industry. With rules, regulations, and other obstacles that could become unwelcome surprises at closing time, Lefort said Peter’s ability to read through the contracts makes all the difference.

“There are a lot of guidelines people don’t necessarily know about until after the deal closes. That can have negative consequences for all parties. Peter works with all involved, so they understand what they are signing. Knowing those in advance can and should be disclosed so buyers can make informed choices,” Lefort said. Peter is licensed to practice real estate in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He has lived in Rhode Island for more than a decade. Because his father, Peter, Sr., served in the U.S. Army, Peter lived all over the world. Settling in Rhode Island has been wonderful because of the wealth of opportunities the area offers. “If I want to go to the beach, it’s close by. I am close enough to see a show in the city or take a drive out to the country. Plus, I am not far from Boston. There are endless possibilities living here,” he said. Peter’s advice for buyers is: “Yesterday was the best day to buy. Today is the second best day.” Wintertime is a great time to sell because the people buying are determined to move and competition isn’t as fierce. For sellers, it comes down to having a solid marketing strategy to put your property in front of as many people as possible, including social media, mailers, MLS, and even walking the neighborhood to inform the area that there is a property for sale. He states, “I would like to choose my neighbors, wouldn’t you?” Peter also noted his interest in helping anyone interested in purchasing multi-family units. Particularly, anywhere in Cranston, Providence or Woonsocket would be a good introduction for him. When he is not learning the trade, Peter spends his time with his 14-year-old daughter. How to Get Up Oil Stains From Your Basement Floor In New England, one of the things that is different about our homes, in comparison to a lot of the other parts of the country, is that we have basements. With the absence of a basement, many other regions have their homes built on concrete slabs.

where the oil had stained. If you have older oil stains, the process would begin with the baking soda step. Once the baking soda is put on the area, let this too sit for an overnight period of time. The next day, clean up the baking soda and fire up the concoction of hot water and Dawn. Now, with a stiff scrub brush, begin to work the stained area with the solution and the scrub brush.

The pros and cons of having a home with a traditional basement vs. one built on a slab, certainly can be listed and used to debate which overall is the “better” to have.

The cleaning portion with the hot water, Dawn, and scrub brush may have to be repeated, maybe even a number of times, in order to truly get the area clean to the point where you are satisfied with the results.

One of the items which comes with territory when one has a basement, particularly one that currently has or at some point has had an oil tank in the basement for its heating system, is the possibility that oil spillage – even in small amounts – can be a bit of a challenge to clean up.

As you work through the whole process, please remember to properly dispose of the cleaning materials that are used (the suggested way to do this may vary from community to community).

If you have a basement floor with some type of coating on it, cleaning up any spilled oil will be MUCH easier than if the oil has penetrated a bare concrete floor, and has had a chance to soak into its porous surface. When the spill occurs on a basement floor that has a protective coating on it, simply dab any excess oil, as best you can with some clean rags, and then clean the area with a mixture of hot water and Dawn (my personal favorite because of its degreasing properties). This method may have to be repeated a few times until the oil has been satisfactorily cleaned, but it will get you there! Instances where the concrete floor is bare, and the oil has had a chance to REALLY soak in – perhaps over a period of ‘years’ – are a bit more involved. If the oil stain is “newer,” my first plan of attack would be to soak up any excess oil with clean rags, then pour some traditional clay kitty litter on the stain, and let it sit overnight. The next step would be to sweep up the kitty litter the next day and then put some baking soda on the area

When all is said and done and dried out, you should have a clean surface that is free from the oil staining. Once it is clean, it may be worth looking into some type of appropriate concrete coating, that once applied, may make the cleaning procedure much simpler (as discussed earlier) if oil were to spill on the floor in the future.

Jules Hope Chest Helps Families Year Round By Mark Berger

Most people are in a giving mood toward year’s end. They hope to share happy vibes and goodwill towards those who are dealing with financial and/ or emotional difficulties. While this time brings out the appeals, it often subsides once the new year begins. That thinking or attitude doesn’t help the hundreds of Rhode Island families’ who rely on such programs and assistance to make it through the other months. That is how Jules Hope Chest in East Providence has proven to be a viable resource. The nonprofit organization works with families statewide, by connecting them with essentials for the short term, and services to direct them for the long-term. Jules Hope Chest Founder and CEO Julie Silva and the group strives to help anyone who reaches out. “We want to provide families with the necessities that are often cut out of budgets when the money gets tight,” Silva said. “We give them supplies, ranging from diapers and wipes to clothes. We also give them access to area services to get the assistance they need, particularly during the colder weather months.” Jules Hope Chest started in 2019, to give back to the community. The name is derived from Julie’s first name, Rhode Island’s slogan, and possessing a “hope chest,” to bring help for a brighter future. The endeavor began from Silva’s apartment, but she quickly realized she would need more space to adequately help others. That was when she moved her operation to 505 Waterman Street in East Providence. There is a volunteer staff of five people who wear many

hats—from marketing to grant writing—and pitch in elsewhere. Silva notes that the spirit of giving predates her current venture. Her father, Joseph Silva, oversaw a toy drive serving East Providence and Providence for two decades, before passing away in 2013. Julie took it over and soon discovered some people weren’t getting their basic needs addressed. It was there that Silva became determined to make a difference. “There was such a need for families—the working poor—who needed basic necessities, such as toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, soap, laundry detergent, and other essentials. We work with local agencies and the community to obtain these supplies, and then work in tandem with other agencies to get these out to those in need,” she said. While many of the families they serve come locally, there are other clients that live in Central Falls, Providence, Woonsocket, and elsewhere. They are connected with other agencies, such as

CAPs (Community Action Programs) that can offer heating assistance, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, utility subsidies, and more. Silva noted that many of these families live from paycheck to paycheck. Others may not qualify for programs because they make too much money, according to federal poverty guidelines. Besides those services, Jules Hope Chest also offers HOPE—Helping Our Parents Excel. This is where local people and manufacturers donate items for the needy. Covid-19 tests, shampoo, and other essential items are placed in bags with other information for the clients to take home. Silva said they try to supply families with enough to last one month. There could be exceptions—such as diapers and wipes—but they try replenishing their supplies whenever possible. Their “Sir Joseph’s Birthday Closet” program helps to ensure children receive new clothes and gifts for the holidays and birthdays. The kids can go to one of three locations statewide, and in partnership with Children’s Friends and Warren Head Start Program,

to select something special for themselves. Having clothes that aren’t “hand-me-downs” gives the kids something that is truly their own. Silva said that while they help families around the holidays, they are around long after presents are unwrapped and the new year begins. “The need for help is important, regardless of the season. Families in this situation may not know there are ways for them to get help. That is the driving force for what we do. For me to get people the help and care they need is essential to the success of our programs,” she said. For those who would like to contribute, Silva has Target.com and Amazon.com registries. How The New Year’s Resolution Has Evolved BY PAUL LONARDO

If you’ve ever made a promise on New Year’s Eve to bring about a beneficial change going forward in your life, something that would improve your personal, social, or professional life, you are far from alone. Nearly half of all Americans make New Year’s resolutions, the most common usually made by at least one out of every three resolution-makers, is the pledge to increase overall health and fitness with a proper diet. New Year’s resolutions are common in Western civilization, but the tradition is practiced pretty much around the globe. Whether you actively participate or not, you will be amazed to know how far back the practice extends. These annual betterment pledges actually began as far back as 4,000 years, when the Babylonians made promises to their pagan gods at the start of the new year (which for them began in midMarch when their crops were planted) that they would pay back their debts and return any items that they had borrowed. To the ancient people of Mesopotamia, the implications were that not being true to their word would put them in poor favor with their gods. Never a good idea. Likewise, honoring your promise was believed to bring good fortune and prosperity the following year. The Romans picked up the practice when Julius Caesar, the noted reform-minded emperor, altered the calendar to establish January 1 as the first day of the new year around 46 B.C. The

first month of the year was named for Janus, the two-faced deity, who symbolically looked backward in the old year and forward into the new one. The Romans would offer sacrifices and pledge good conduct to this god at the beginning of every year. In Medieval Europe, knights vowed to reaffirm their allegiance to chivalry at the end of the year, while followers of early Christianity spent the first day of the new year reflecting on past transgressions and vowing to make amends. Near the middle of the 18th century, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, created the Covenant Renewal Service, also known as Watch Night Services. Typically held on New Year’s Eve, or on January 1, it provides the opportunity for Christians to review the year that has passed and make confessions, and then make resolutions for the coming year.

The services, which often include singing, praying, and preaching, are quite popular with evangelical Protestant churches, today. In Judaism, beginning with their new year, Rosh Hashanah, through the High Holidays and culminating in Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), worshippers are expected to both seek and offer forgiveness for wrongdoings, perpetrated by and against them. About the only thing that has changed over the millennia with regards to the New Year’s resolution is that the promises people make at year’s end these days are kept to themselves. No longer pledging self-discipline or tolerance to an Almighty Being is something that is not insignificant. This is an observation that has been made by many people, and it may be partly to blame for the difficulty so many of us have in fulfilling our resolutions. Without a spiritual or religious component and no immortality repercussions, it makes it considerably easier for someone to be lax on keeping their personal

promise. In fact, numerous studies show that almost nine out of every ten New Year’s resolutions fail. Approximately a quarter of resolutions fail after only one week, and it just goes up from there, 40% are abandoned after a month, 50% after 3 months, and 60% after 6 months. You get the picture. But do not despair. There is reason for hope, because it is proven that setting a goal, any time of the year, is the most important factor because there is a 0% chance of succeeding without making a commitment, or resolution, in this case. And keep in mind that goals made in public and with the support of family and friends stand the best chance of being achieved. So, don’t give up on that New Year’s resolution. At least you know you’re not alone. When it comes to dietary and nutritional resolutions, tradition says that eating more leafy greens on New Year’s Day will herald prosperity for the entire year. And that is something that we can all do.
